Hi everyone, Welcome to your late September edition of InTallaght. It's been a busy couple of weeks with some erratic weather for the kids' return to school. The Junior Cert results have been and gone and everyone is settling back into college after a summer of fun. Next thing we know it will be Halloween and not long after Christmas....yes I said it Christmas!! In the meantime however we have been busy working on more fantatsic content for you to get stuck into over the next two weeks. This issue we speak to up-and-coming model and aspiring TV presenter Niamh Cullen. Former Miss Sunday World, Niamh went on to place in the top seven of the Miss Ireland contest last year, she works with Off The Rails’star Brendan Courtney and has just landed a job as hostess in Jamie Oliver’s swish new Dundrum restaurant. Niamh is a lovely girl whose work ethic alone will see her go far.Watch this space! In other news we speak to The Aluskas. We recently reviewed the band’s album and caught up with the guys who filled us in on the past, present and future plans for the group. Our fundraising drive for little Jacob Keenan has come to a close this month and we are thrilled to say that we have made above and beyond what we expected because thanks to our very generous friends at the Square who, touched by Jacob's story, donated €1,000 which helped us break our original target of €2,000 and raise a whopping €2,539!! A big thank you to everyone who took out an advert, the full proceeds of which went towards the Jacob’s aftercare. So enjoy the story so far as well as all your favourites from cinema to sport. If you feel like dropping me a line, for whatever reason, email editor@genesismedia.ie Until October, slán!

THRILL The World is an annual global world record attempt event which involves people dancing simultaneously to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. This year the Dublin gathering will be held in Tallaght on Saturday, October 27, and organisers hope to top last year’s event in the O2 when 650 zombie dancers raised almost €10,000 for The Carers Association. Rhonda Dunphy, Event Manager for Thrill The World Dublin said: “I’d like to invite InTallaght readers to join us in this global world record attempt. “The event celebrates the joy of Michael Jackson’s music and dance while raising money for good causes all around the world and our aim is to raise money for The

These have proved very popular with regular attendances of up to 300 people coming from all over the country and even Sweden. We felt we could expand that day into a bigger event and that is how the festival has come about,” she said. As a part of the festival the 4th annual TEDxTallaght, an independently run TED event showcasing the best of Ireland’s new thinkers and innovators, will also be taking place. This will feature speakers such as Maureen Gaffney, Catriona Crowe, Cathal Garvey and many more.

Football For All To Celebrate 10 Years
As well as all this there will be information for families on what opportunities are in Ireland for children and adults with disabilities within the football community.
THE FAI are celebrating a very important anniversary at Tallaght Stadium this Sunday – and everyone is invited to attend.
Everyone is welcome to attend the event and entry is free on the day.

Oisin Jordan from the FAI,who is the National Coordinator of the FFA Programme spoke to InTallaght about the programme and what is happening on Sunday. “The Football for All Programme was launched in 2002 to assist and develop Football opportunities for all players with a disability in their local community. The FAI has taken a leading step in the promotion and development of a clear pathway so as to encourage players with a disability to participate in Football.Everybody regardless of his or her ability should have the opportunity to play the game. At the moment we have 3,500 players participating in all of our programmes.” Players with disabilities between the age of 6 and 14 years get regular football training and competition through a local community club in their area. The training they receive is professional and delivered by qualified FAI coaches recruited through a network of FFA coaches from partnerships developed by the FAI with their business community. “We will be hosting the Football For All Club Blitz along with family entertainment. On Tuesday, September 18, Lord Mayor, Naoise Ó Muirí, heralded the start the project in the Mansion House with Dublin City Manager, John Tierney in attendance. The scheme, supported by Renault Ireland and ESB eCars, gives employees, in the council’s head office at Wood Quay, access to two Renault Fluence Z.E. electric cars and one Renault Kangoo Maxi Z.E. 5-seater electric van. The eCars will be charged on site by charge points supplied and installed by ESB eCars and manufactured by Irish company, M2C.The vehicles can also be powered by a public share point network which has coverage in 82 per cent of Ireland’s main towns and cities. Lord Mayor Ó Muirí said:“The cost of powering an electric vehicle is approximately one tenth of the cost of an equivalent petrol car with carbon emissions being reduced by over 50 per cent. By introducing this scheme, Dublin City Council is clearly making headway in reducing its carbon footprint.” This eCar pooling scheme takes its place among the many successful sustainability projects developed by Dublin City Council over recent years. The Council’s principles, vision and actions for increasing the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the city are clearly evident today. John Tierney, City Manager, said: “Dublin City Council is delighted to be involved with ESB eCars and Renault Ireland in introducing these eCars to our fleet adding to the sustainability and smart city initiatives ongoing within the council.”
First Communions,Confirmations and any other celebrations. As well as this we have a family room in the Library Room for families with children and we can serve lunch in there also.” With his vast experience of doing business locally Jimmy is confident customers will be very happy with what the Interval has to offer.
He told InTallaght:“We started here in The Abberley Court on the Sunday - everything is the same as before, same staff, same food, same love and same passion. Everyone is very positive and it’s a great building stone for the hotel, we’re looking forward to working together.
He added:“The feedback so far has been brilliant. I’m looking forward to seeing all the old existing customers and meeting new customers too. If anyone has any questions regarding bookings, availability,or any special dietary requirements, please get in touch with me at 087 2164201.”
“We have four function rooms here with new menus, all fresh and handmade by our chefs. We are available for Christenings,

The scheme promotes Dublin City Council’s seven focus areas on sustainability:energy, water, waste, biodiversity, transport, society and procurement. It has been successfully implemented in ESB head office and has resulted in ultra low running costs and a platform to promote the benefits of electric vehicles to any organisation. Dermot McArdle, Manager, ESB eCars said, “This is a great move forward in the development of sustainable commercial fleets and endorsement of Ireland’s roll out of electric vehicles. We commend Dublin City Council for taking this step and being an example to other organisations to show how electric transport can be of benefit both from an environmental and cost efficiency perspective”. The launch suitably took place during Mobility Week which runs from September 16-22. The initiative is aimed at promoting sustainable modes of travel and improving the urban environment.

Tallaght will be represented on All Ireland Final Day this Sunday by two clubmen from St Anne’s in Bohernabreena when the Dublin Minors take on the old enemy Meath in the traditional curtain raiser at Croke Park. Alan“Nipper’McNally is one of Dublin Minor manager Dessie O’Farrell’s selectors and Lorcan Molloy is the goalkeeper for the young Dubs as they try to avenge last year’s final defeat to Tipperary. Nipper will be able to pass on his wisdom as he played with the Dublin minor squad himself back in the 80’s before he played for the senior Dubs for three years at the end of the same decade, collecting a Leinster Championship medal against Meath in ‘89. This year has been filled with excitement for Nipper as he recently also became Chairman of his beloved St Anne’s. Club PRO Linda Harbron told InTallaght magazine that everyone at the club is looking forward to Sunday’s final. She said:“All at St Anne’s GAA Club would like to wish the very best of luck to Lorcan Molloy representing the club in goal for the Dublin Minor Footballers in their All Ireland Final this weekend v Meath. And also to our club Chairman Nipper McNally who is a selector.” The evening before the All Ireland Final sees St Anne’s joining the celebrations by hosting a charity match between the 1992 Finalists Dublin and Donegal in Bohernabreena.20 years on the two sides of the 90’s will battle it out for fun and for charity. The Curtain Raiser to this game is St Anne’s over 35s team v Tir Na Nog of Armagh’s over 35 side. The over 35s game will take place at 4.30pm before the real action gets sunder way between Dublin and Donegal at 6.15pm. Admission is €5 and under 16's are free of charge. All proceeds go to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin. There will be great live music in the club afterwards for what should round off a fantastic day in the club for all.
Shamrock Rovers has appointed Brian Laws as director of football at the club until the end of the 2012 season. The club is hoping this appointment will give it some “breathing space” as it searches for a replacement for Stephen Kenny. Laws will take charge of the first team for Saturday’s EA Sports Cup final against Drogheda United plus the remaining six matches in the Airtricity League. In a career which spanned almost 20 years, Laws made over 100 appearances for Burnley, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest. He spent six years playing under the most charismatic manager the English game has ever seen, the legendary Brian Clough before moving into management with spells at Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe United and Sheffield Wednesday. He has played in all four professional divisions of English football and also managed at every level. He returned to Burnley as manager in January 2010 but was unable to keep the Clarets in the Premier League and was sacked in December 2010 after a disappointing start to their first season back in the Championship. Speaking of his new task at the Hoops, Laws said: “I am delighted to be joining Shamrock Rovers and look forward to working with the chairman, board of directors, players, staff and supporters to move the club forward into a new era. “I have significant football managerial experience having taken charge of over 800 league games in all four divisions in England.I aim to bring that experience with me to advise, guide and lead the club’s short-term strategy. “My strengths include getting to know clubs from top to bottom and leading change where necessary, at all times identifying and building on the club’s strengths, culture and brand. I am delighted to be accepting the challenge and can't wait to get going.” Shamrock Rovers chairman, Jonathan Roche said:“We have six important league games and the EA Sports Cup final coming up over the next month and a half, and Brian is coming in to help the existing back room staff to do as well as possible in those games. “Bringing Brian in also gives the club some breathing space to take our time to pick the next manager.Brian’s experience in the game will help us very much in the short-term and he has recruited many players from Ireland so he is not a stranger to the league.”

The young Tallaght woman, who first came to public attention when she modeled for Dunnes Stores at the age of 10 was propelled into the limelight when she became a contestant on the Irish version of Take Me Out. She then went on to win Miss Sunday World after which she became one of the top seven contestants in the Miss Ireland competition.
Tell us a bit about yourself Niamh.
So determined is Niamh to reach her goals that she not only models with Assets she interns with Off The Rails star Brendan Courtney , works for make-up company Character Beauty and has also landed a job as hostess in Jamie Oliver’s new Dundrum restaurant which opens this month.
I used to do it when I was younger. I actually did a Dunnes Stores campaign when I was 10. Then I didn’t do much for years but my friends were always saying ‘you should go for it’and it was them who really pressured me into doing Miss Sunday World, which I won. It was crazy really because I finally entered but didn’t think I’d get anywhere so I didn’t tell anyone at all, not even my boyfriend, and when I won Amanda Brunker asked me onstage‘who is here to support you?’ and I had to say ‘noone, I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t think this would happen!’
Editor, Emer Mulvaney caught up with Niamh who spoke of her hectic work schedule, the reality programme she will soon start filming – which is a world away from Tallafornia – and the plans she has to work her way up to her dream job as a TV presenter.
Well I’m 20 years old, I’m from Kingswood and I went to St Paul’s in Greenhills.
You’re a model now – how did you get into that?
Was that your first break into it?
I had gone on Take Me Out before that.I was actually working behind the scenes and the cameraman was saying ‘you should go on there you’d be so funny’ and I ended up going on and I got noticed for a couple of things [modelling jobs].
InTallaght_MasterEdition22_Layout 1 19/09/2012 10:37 Page 14
14
So where has the job taken you since – what else have you done? Tell us about Miss Ireland.
Would you ever condsider any other reality shows – like Tallafornia?
You start working for Jamie Oliver soon What were you studying? is that right?
Describe a typical working week for you.
How did you get that job?
Have you met many celebrities along the way?
occasions. I went to the launches of different things like Celebrity Salon, not this year, and got recognised but I never trusted it would happen. When I eventually did go after it they asked me why I hadn’t done it long ago and I said I didn’t think I was tall enough but they said in Ireland you don’t have to be tall to model.
I’ve done seven magazine covers for the Sunday World.I also got an internship with Brendan Courtney on Off The Rails, which is fantastic, and I am learning a lot. It isn’t all fashion and fun though it’s hard work and he did warn me about that but I am happy to work hard.
Yes, well his new restaurant opens this month, I’ve actually just come from training there.I will be working as a hostess where my job will be to greet customers when they come in. It’s a very glamorous job really!
Well I had to go through an interview process but Assets recommended me.
So you are signed to Assets?
Yes I signed a while ago now.Everyone said ‘go on do it’and I didn’t have the balls. I just didn’t think I would get anywhere. Assets actually approached me on numerous
Well I made it into the top seven last year and was crowned Miss Congeniality. That was in August and I was supposed to go back to college in the September but the bookings were flying in and I decided to take a year out.
I was in Ballyfermot and had done a year in TV presenting. I wanted to go on and do journalism. I didn’t do it initially because it was a three-year degree and I didn’t feel mature enough. I’m hoping to go back next year now as I have plenty of work in the meantime.
So what’s coming up for you?
Well I start filiming the ICA Bootcamp in January so that will take up a lot of my time and I have other work in between as well as my part-time jobs!
How did you get involved in that?
Assets do all my commercial bookings so that’s how that came about.
I probably wouldn’t do Tallafornia for my family’s sake. Kelly [Donegan] is also an Assets model and she is lovely so I have nothing against it.It’s good TV I just don’t think I would do it.
A typical week would be lots of press calls, [news]paper shots and working with Brendan.
Well I have a part-time job with Character Beauty which works a lot with Xpose etc. I’ve met Karen Koster, Glenda Gilson and Pippa O’Connor. I’ve also met Colin Farrell, Kirk from TOWIE, the cast of Made In Chelsea, the whole of the Hollyoaks cast and Kimberly Wyatt.

What’s been the best advice you have been given along the way?
Rosanna Davidson was in the salon one day and I didn’t know her but had seen her at events. Anyway she told me that things were going to get worse before they got better. She said at my age that she wasn’t doing as well as me and I was telling her that I wanted to be a presenter but even if I didn’t get that I wanted to be involved in TV.She said I was going about it a good way.
What’s your experience of the modelling world?
If I am brutally honest it is quite nasty in ways. It’s good in Ireland as the industry is so small but then again if you get in there, there is fighting for jobs. On so many occasions I have got a call asking ‘how did you get that job?’ You have to have a good head and a thick skin because the amount of times I have come home crying. Some girls, who have been in modeling for a few years can be nasty too when they see fresher faces coming in but there is room here for everyone.
What do you think about plastic surgery?
So many models are getting it done. Someone asked me once would I consider it and I said ‘my body hasn’t even developed properly yet so I’m not getting anything done!’ Having said that there are lots of girls even younger than me getting it.
Do you go in for the size zero obsession?
The international models have flat stomachs and are size zero but in Ireland we are more realistic with 6s, and 8s and 10s and that’s the way it should be.
So what’s next for you Niamh?
Well after the ICA Bootcamp finishes filming I am going to Australia for a month to see my boyfriend, Karl Nolan, who is out there for a year. Other than that I just hope the work keeps coming and I will do my best to follow dreams. To keep up with what Niamh is doing join her on facebook/niamhcullen or follow her on twitter 2niamhcullenz

Is it easier nowadays to go down the Independent route?
After three years The Aluskas have released a cracking debut album, Draw, and are about to head on tour with it. The band which is made up of brothers, Anthony and David Byrne with Philip Tinsley caught up with InTallaght to talk about where they’ve come from and where it is they believe they are going.
Anthony: Yes the music model has definitely changed and the way things have gone means artists have more control over their work. Philip: Social media and sites like Bandcamp have made it much more democratic so you don’t need a label to get your stuff out there. Also technology has made it possible for an indipendent group to make their work sound just as good, quality wise,as a band who’ve used an expensive studio. David: The only downside, I would say, with every artist having access to the internet means that because there’s so much stuff out there it can make it harder to find something, you have so much choice now.
I’ve seen two of your videos and have to say they’re excellent, is it true you made them yourselves?
DavidYes we did.We all went to Kevin’s College in Crumlin and we studied Media Production. We shoot our own videos, everything from the animation to the directing.
Where in Tallaght do How would you you guys come from? describe your sound? What do you think of the music scene/ business in Ireland? So how long has the band been together? What bands influence you? Irish begrugery maybe? Your debut album was released during the summer, so You guys are a totally What are your plans tell us about it? independent group? for the future? Anthony: David and myself are from Springfield and Philip is from Fettercairn. We all went to school in St Mark’s Community School.
Philip:The Aluskas were formed in 2009.We were in a four piece called Willow years ago, during the school years. We’ve been playing headline and support gigs around Ireland for the last three years. We released our debut single Backwater Woods last January.
David:The album is called DRAW! and was released on July 30. We recorded it over the course of 13 days. We already had a backlog of songs, which made it easier to pick tracks that were complimentary to one another. We’re delighted with it, the change in musical styles keeps the record feeling unexpected. PHOTO CREDIT Cowboy image by Natalie McGlynn. For more of her work see www.baubiesunshine.com
Anthony:It’s rooted in early rock and roll with a modern mindset. We take elements of folk, rock, and more modern genres like electronic music in the future. David: It’s very diverse; from 50’s ballads, 60’s rock and roll and story-based songs. Philip: We’re always trying to get as many different elements together as possible.
Anthony: The Beatles,Neil Young,Simon and Garfunkel, Credence Clearwater Revival,The Beach Boys. David: Van Morrison, Led Zepplin,The Frames, Oasis, Thin Lizzy. Philip: Very influenced by anyone who tries different styles, bands that don’t stick too rigidly to any one genre like Radiohead for example.
Anthony: Yes we are, we aren’t with a label. We support all aspects of independent art, music and film. For the album we set up our own label Cobweb Recordings and for the design of the album cover we got an independent designer called Natalie McGlynn.
There’s loads of great Irish acts doing good stuff and working hard yet they’re not getting any attention in this country. In a survey recently of bands in the top 30 only four were Irish. As regards Indie music it seems like you have to be accepted by countries outside Ireland before people here will say“oh yeah I like that”.I don’t know why that is.
[All laugh] Yeah probably, there is a bit of that as well! But it’s always been like that here, UK and US bands get more attention and of course the majority of radio here is very pop-targeted.
Anthony: We’re going to tour the album for a couple of months then we want to go back into the studio before the end of the year and make another record. We don’t want to keep people waiting; we don’t want to get stale

In June we announced the first every Community Champion in The Square, Bridie Sweeney, a volunteer of 50 years and it was difficult to think of an equally deserving person – but it has become apparent since then that there are plenty of you doing great work in our community! This month the lovely Kitty Raftery, a Galway native who has brought much to Tallaght in the 40 years she has lived here, was nominated by her predecessor for the award and is, we know you will agree, a very worthy winner. Kitty is from Seskin View and is the wife of Pat to whom she has been married for 37 years, mother of six including Colin, Gerard, Fiona, Ronan, Keith and Emmet and Grandmother to Shannon and Erin. Kitty moved to the area four decades ago for a ‘nice pensionable job’in the Civil Service but as the years went on she made her mark in her community in more ways than one. For the past seven years Kitty has been an integral part of the Senior Citizens’Club, which is based in The Postal Club in Kiltipper where she does everything from organise events, holidays and days out to teaching aerobics and line dancing to over 100 members. She is the lifeblood of the club according to Bridie who says that Kitty was the first person who sprung to mind when she decided to vote for the next Community Champion. Bridie said: “Kitty is the type of person who
shows kindness to everyone. She is a lovely person who visits the sick and makes the days of those who come up to join in,in the club. She listens to people, she advises and for some she is the family member they may be missing. Kitty is that club and she is loved and appreciated by all. I am delighted she is being honoured like this.” Kitty first got involved with The Senior Citizens’ Club when a flier came through her door looking for people to get involved in a‘new club for over 50s’. She said:“My neighbours and I went along, I was the ring leader, and we met Joe Tierney who was the manager. The members were there to meet up and socialise and they did things like exercises and aerobics and I got involved and started teaching line dancing. Pretty soon I was doing the aerobics too and I went off and got qualifications in it so I knew what I was doing was best for the person taking part. I loved it from the very moment I went up there.” Kitty works up at the club from Monday to Friday and looks after anything from 86-100 people on a daily basis. “The first thing we do is aerobics,”she said.“It’s great for them and is a great start to the day. There are more men that you would think up there and for many it is a lifeline. “Throughout the day then they do indoor bowls and play pool. There is a gym, where we have two gym instructors, and a pitch and putt course and we have a professional artist who comes in to teach art classes. We also do arts and crafts.” As part of her role there Kitty arranges days out and weekends away for the members. Just recently she organised for 120 to go to Galway for three nights. She also takes them for walks and organises picnics as well as fundraises for the club which is subsidised by the HSE. “It’s such a vital part of some many people’s lives and I am honoured to be involved in it,” she said. Kitty was also a huge force in the regeneration of The Square project. After being drafted in by Bridie Kitty went door to door getting signatures of support for the building, something she also did when the cinema moved out. Bridie said: “She was a huge help and is someone you can really rely on.Nobody knows that better than the members of the club. If they have any issues they come to Kitty. If they need help they come to Kitty and knowing that they have that is something special.” The Senior Citizens’ Club itself was founded by former Guard Eddie Sadlier and his wife Attracta and over the years welcomed many from the settled travelling community from the north side of Dublin.

“They were great people,” said Kitty. “They loved their time at the club and we enjoyed having them there but unfortunately Government cuts meant that in the end they had no means of transport here.I learned a lot from them as many people did. It’s very important to treat everyone equally and they also said to me that I made them feel so welcome which meant a lot.” When her children were young Kitty stayed at home to look after them and many of the other children on the road. She also paid regular visits to Peamount to her‘special friends’and hosted a group from Cheeverstown every Thursday in the club for years. It seems that it’s because of the open-armed welcome she has extended to so many for such a long time that she is a much-loved member of the community and long may she continue her fantastic work.

Jacob Keenan’s Progress Continues After Successful Operation
JACOB’S JOURNEY has just taken 3 year old Jacob Foley Keenan from Kilnamanagh to St Louis in the USA and back home again to Tallaght. After two tough but successful operations the little boy is beginning the next part of his journey, which will hopefully see him walking by Christmas. Regular InTallaght readers will be familiar with Jacob’s story. He had been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy after an MRI scan at 18 months old and because of this had been unable to take more than a few steps unaided. When his family heard of an operation available in the US, which would enable him to walk unaided and eliminate the need for Botox injections, they decided to go for it.
His Grandmother Marie Keenan told InTallaght that Jacob has been doing very well since his successful operations in the US. “He is in great form and the physios are delighted with how he’s doing. He is now able to stand alone with his feet on the ground, without the sticks for a little bit longer, which is brilliant. He’s also doing hydrotherapy and therapeutic horse riding, which he really enjoys. Plus he started pre school as well last week so he’s very busy at the moment!”
The procedure, which is carried out on children’s spinal cords is known as selective dorsal rhizotomy and was available in St.Louis Children hospital, Missouri, USA.Unfortunately the operation isn’t funded by the HSE and is entirely funded through donations and fundraising events and costs €50,000. Jacob’s family and friends set about raising the money needed to get him this much-needed operation. Many different fundraising events were carried out before the target was reached. In July Jacob headed off to the US and the St Louis Hospital to undergo the vital procedure. His 1st operation, the SDR, took place on July 5th and a 2nd operation followed on July 13th to lengthen his hamstring and heel chords. Both operations were a success and after a month recuperating Jacob returned home on Sunday August 5th to begin the next stage of his journey, which will entail 6 months of intensive physio. His family is delighted with his progress, his mobility with regards to kneeling and standing is improving every few days thanks to lots of physiotherapy and hard work from the man himself. Thanks to this increased mobility Jacob was able to start pre school last week and also recently began doing therapeutic horse riding as well, something his family say he absolutely loves.

The Killers Are Back With Disappointing Runaways RUNAWAYS, the latest single from The Killers, sounds pretty much like every other song they’ve written in the last few years, with a bit of 80’s power rock thrown in for good measure! Taken from the bands upcoming fourth studio album Battle Born, Runawaysis more of the same from the Las Vegas band; a big anthemic easy listening tune with sing-along lyrics. If that is your thing then you’ll love this single. Personally I’ve given up on the band after loving their debut album Hot Fuss when it came out in 2004. Since then there’s been a gradual decline in the quality of music being created, the last album being a case in point. Runaways tells the story of a couple living in small town America who want to get away from their dreary lives and fulfill their dreams.Accompanied by howling guitars and crashing drums, Brandon Flowers connects with his inner Bruce Springsteen to deliver the story of a romance gone pear-shaped.
The New Album From The xx– Well Worth The Wait THIS month sees the release of Coexist the long awaited second album from South London indie trio The xx. Three years on from their remarkable self-titled debut album, which earned the band a host of awards and accolades from around the world,The xx are back with a record, and a sound, not a million miles away from their previous work. Taking elements of trip hop, drum and bass and indie, they make the kind of chilled out easy listening music you’d stick on after getting back to your house from a club. Coexist sticks to the same formula, as fans would expect, a lot of haunting lead guitar, synth and bass with steel drums knocking about in the background. However, one difference here is that the band open up more than they did on their debut record, with heartbreak and the disintegration of a relationship being the overriding themes. Opening track and first single Angels is one of their quietest tracks, but one of their most powerful,as haunting
female vocals are delivered over soft bass to create an emotional track that would melt the hardest of hearts. Next up is Chained, a tune which contains all the hallmarks of the band, rhythmic drum beats and a guitar riff rising to create an uplifting feeling of chilled out bliss with two of the band members sharing vocal duties. Fraction and Try, the next two tracks are slower and darker than the rest of the album, neither rise like the previous tracks leaving a more melancholic less optimistic mood. After this comes Sunset, the only real foot tapping‘up and at ‘em’ dance tune on Coexist and one of my favourites. Of the rest of the album, the stand out tracks for me are Missingand Unfold, both featuring weird drumbeats and enough ambiance to keep long-term lovers of the band happy. So the what’s the verdict? Coexist is a good album that will suck you in with its powerful sound and emotive lyrics, full of tunes you’ll hear as background music on numerous TV shows over the next year. I don’t know if it’s an improvement on xx, after being away for three years I would have expected the band to be more inspired. However, I imagine fans won’t be disappointed as it has plenty of first album elements - they’re just not executed as well.
Along with channeling The Boss, there’s a nod to classic American rock with both the lyric content and the sound. It’s not a terrible single, it’s just very predictable and unimaginative. I couldn’t imagine listening to this song again, once was enough! Production wise the track sounds brilliant, and Flowers can sing to be fair to him. While the band have a large worldwide fan base, (if album sales are anything to go by) I don’t think Runaways is going to win over the people who can’t stand them. Runaways feels more like an album track. I’m surprised The Killers, or their record company, thought this was the best release for their first single in years. It is a catchy tune though and there’s always a market for that!

Darksiders II gives you control over the Horseman Death, instead of his brother War from the previous title.
The game will take Death across a vast array of dungeons and city hubs. City hubs feature characters who will give out side quests to Death. One city hub will connect to a few of the dungeons and that one city will feature more dungeons than the whole of the original Darksiders. Darksiders II again features ‘Hack and Slash’ style gameplay, the same as in the previous game and others like the ‘Devil May Cry’ series. Players who played the first Darksiders will unlock the Pauldron of the Horsemen in Darksiders II.This level five legendary armor piece boosts all Death’s stats as well as his critical damage.
The game takes place in the same time period but plays across new maps, confirmed to be double in cumulative size to that of its predecessor. Hyundai introduces its cutting-edge Hyundai Veloster three-door coupe, which delivers innovation to the compact coupé segment, with a unique third door for easy rear-seat access. Hyundais aren’t what they used to be and this one most certainly isn’t – albeit largely owing to the fact that it’s never existed in the first place – but the budget Korean brand is definitely evolving, in both in engineering and design terms, having knocked out a few cars of late that
InTallaght_MasterEdition22_Layout 1 19/09/2012 10:41 Page 45
have gotten mainstream European marques more than just a little hot under the collar. The Veloster is the most strikingly alternative Korean curveball yet as either a coupé with an extra orifice or a hatch with one hinge short of a full set.Yep, it’s got three doors… and that’s not including the boot. However, unlike the only other three-door oddball, the Mini Clubman, the Veloster wins the toss every time by having the extra door on the correct side of the ride in every country - including Ireland. Outside, the Veloster looks positively chunky compared to the famous Hyundai Coupé. It has a very interesting exterior with creases and curves that bring a smile to your face.It has similar proportions to a VW Sirocco - and that is a good thing. Sitting on 17-inch alloys, the four-seater, front-wheel drive car turns heads. Veloster is available in some vivid colours and while a bright green test car divides opinion - let’s face it: you don’t buy a coupé to be anonymous. Inside, the driver and front seat passenger are well catered for with a nice dashboard and good levels of equipment. The rear seating is, as you would expect, a compromise.Headroom is poor for adults although there is space for two people. At anything over 5’4”you will need to sit with your head almost tilted back (and under the very long rear tailgate glass),otherwise your head will hit off the roof where the roof lining joins the tailgate. The trim for the rear passenger, who sits behind the front passenger, is better quality than behind the driver – clearly Hyundai knows the Veloster will be used more as a 2+1 than a 2+2. Hyundai has a great five-year warranty with Roadside Assistance and Vehicle Health Check as standard. There is just one specification and this keeps things simple.Veloster costs €24,995 on the road and CO2 is 137g/km, so that means owners will pay €225 in annual road tax.For more details on this car contact Mooney’s Hyundai on the Long Mile Road - for contact details visit their website at www.epmooney.ie.

A local company has just launched a new product which it claims will save businesses money and create new jobs. The firm, known as Hydrus Ltd is based in Greenogue Business Park and has developed a new rainwater harvesting system called Hydrus Water Supply which it believes will help companies reduce their water bills – a significant development in the water supply market in Ireland, it says. Company Director Christopher Walter told InTallaght: “When it comes to water supply most businesses are keen to explore rainwater harvesting. However the disruption and cost of installation tends to deter most. The new Hydrus system eradicates all of these concerns. It really is a win-win with the new water supply ‘index-linked’at a lower rate per cube and only the water replaced being charged for. “Traditional systems often require the installation of underground tanks but Hydrus is simply a small box (similar to an alarm) connected to rainwater downpipes.Traditional systems are restricted by what the collected rainwater can be used for, often requiring the need for a new pipe network.,” he added. “Hydrus connects directly to the existing system meaning more water can be utilised and installation is far less disruptive. The most important point from a business perspective is the elimination of initial expenditure and any level of risk. The majority of businesses should qualify for a free supply and installation of their new water supply system. “They then pay for the water that is used via their new system at a lower price per cube than their current supplier. The free of charge supply and installation is subject to site survey and current water expenditure analysis, however it is anticipated that the majority of companies will qualify. There was a buzz of excitement in the air at Nutgrove Shopping Centre recently with the highly- anticipated opening of Ireland’s newest Starbucks. The Food Court was bustling as customers enjoyed the world-famous range of signature frappuccinos, macchiatos, lattes and hot chocolates,as well as the newest range of cool lime and berry ‘Refreshers.’ Store Manager, Sean McLaverty said “We’re excited to be here at Nutgrove and are thankful for the warm welcome we have received from our neighbouring retailers and the local shoppers.” The opening of the store brought with it 12 jobs and in the same time period saw the Entertainment Enterprises Group, which manages it, take over the 17 other Starbucks cafes to add to its then current portfolio of 10. EEGroup, which is an entertainment and restaurants group operated by Irish brothers Colum and Ciarán Butler, now operates the 27 Irish cafes. Celine Gilmer of EEGroup said:“It is a fantastic time for the company. We have so many social outlets for people within our portfolio and we believe that running the 27 Starbucks will be of great benefit to its customers. “The new store in Nutgrove has been afforded a great reception already and we look forward to greeting many regular and new faces in the near future.”

Eileen Casey is a poet, short fiction writer and journalist. Originally from the Midlands, she’s lived in Tallaght, South Dublin since the late 1970’s. She has been facilitating creative writing in Adult Education since the 1980’s. Being a part of children’s creative journeys in recent years Eileen considers to be a real privilege. She is currently putting together an anthology of the children’s poetry under the title ‘Happy as Butter’. As part of AltEnts Arts Organisation’s 2012 Children’s Arts Festival, Eileen acted as Poetry Facilitator to five primary schools throughout Tallaght and Clondalkin. It is InTallaght’s privilege to present to you a selection of the poems that were written during these sessions. In this, and the next four editions of InTallaght, we will be featuring poetry written by the students of Clonburrus National School and St John’s National School in Clondalkin as well as Scoil Chaitlin Maude, Scoil Santain and Holy Rosary National School, Ballycragh – all in Tallaght. Before we jump straight into the children’s poetry, Eileen had the following to say about how she went about the process of the workshops, and how the children reacted to them. “One of the first things I did was to take an ornamental bird (left over from last Christmas) from my carrier bag. This bird I declared to be a Swallow saying that its wing was broken after flying 10,000 miles from Africa. How could it be fixed in a poem? Within minutes, wonderful lines were coming thick and fast: ‘…a Swallow isn’t made from chrome or stone, it’s made of feather and bone..’ ‘…a Swallow broke its wing on its way to spring…’ ‘…I’m going to fix this Swallow’s wing with rope and glue and things…’ Seamus Heaney himself would be proud to own these lines’” she said. “As the week went by with startling speed, I was astonished by the unfailing ability of the children to bring objects together that ordinarily wouldn’t belong, objects such as a bear in the classroom. I brought oyster shells from Galway to classrooms under the mountains in South Dublin. The children responded eloquently. Such bringing together sparks the language of

poetry. We made lists of similes and metaphors. I was delighted by the ease with which fresh, original descriptions arrived.Sunflowers when watered were declared‘…happy as butter…’ “The children’s bi-lingual prowess surfaced in poems such as ‘Thank you for mo mhala scoile nua/mar bhris me the other one.’ “Finally, I found in a collaborative poem, not only humour, but a bringing together of nature and technology which ended the week as it begun, in total delight:“The sea tastes like salt/it’s not its fault/the sea feels like rain/it puts out flame/the sea looks like blue jelly/even on the telly.’” She added:“Thanks to AltEnts and the Arts Council for supporting the Children’s Arts Festival. Thanks to all the schools for taking part and to Clondalkin Library for hosting St John’s National School. Thanks also to all who made me feel so welcome and who were responsible for the smooth organisation of a really enjoyable week of magic.”

Funny woman Dawn French expands her writing repitoire. This book caught my eye inTallaght library as I was sheltering from the rain before heading to the bus stop. The typography is quirky and fun, and the little silhouette of a dog drew my eye.I’ve been a fan of Dawn French since her stint as the protagonist in the very funny Vicar of Dibley, which I loved in my teens.I had been meaning to read her autobiography Dear Fatty, but hadn’t got around to it yet.Now here was a novel by my favourite comedienne.I snapped it up. Having previously written for TV, for serious dramas as well as comedy sketches,Dawn has said “I have turned away from the thought of writing fiction in the past through what I suppose is actually, fear. The direct, raw invitation for the reader to come in and explore my imagination is fairly scary for me so I have busied myself with so much else. I am in my 50s now and it's time to be unafraid!” I for one am glad she made the leap to novel writing.A Tiny Bit Marvellousis told through the eyes of a mother and her two teenage children. Dawn said:“The inspiration for the story came from listening to so many of my 50-year-old plus chums rabbiting on about how their teenage children are a mystery and a challenge and listening to the
teenagers thinking the same about their Mums.“ The mother, professional, well-spoken and well-versed Mo, should be in a good position to understand her offspring, being a child psychiatrist but this seems to make their baffling behaviour all the worse. She is about to turn 50 and is having a mid-life panic. She has become entirely grey. Inside, and out.She is also, irony of ironies, in the process of writing a survival manual for parents of teens as she remains completely clueless about and/or at loggerheads with her own.
to his obsession with Oscar Wilde. He is a delightfully camp and entertaining character, much more so than Dora, whose character I found a bit grating. The book is written in a diary style, from the point of view of these three characters.Thankfully Mo and Peter more than made up for my annoyance at Dora’s chapters.
Her 17-year-old daughter Dora is the typical stroppy teenager. She is going through a difficult time, having just come out of her first relationship, which lasted all of six weeks. She’s finishing her A Levels and thinks the world hates her.
I was expecting a bit more laugh-out -oud humour from this book but it was funnyish in parts, where we can laugh at the mundanity of life.We get to see the ups and downs of family life and the different relationships and feelings they have for each other. In the end it’s a heartwarming story with genuine humour. As long as you don’t expect a laugh a minute,I’d give it a go if you like Dawn French.
French’s own daughter Billie, is now 19 – roughly the same age as the inexhaustibly stroppy daughter,Dora,in her novel. However,French insists there’s no similarity between the two of them. She said:“She’s really not like that, never has been. My daughter isn’t at all extreme like the girl in the book.” The 16-year-old son Peter prefers to be known as Oscar due

I want to go all-out with my Halloween costume this year. Last year I went as Medusa with a scary green scaly face. What would be a prettier makeup look for this year?
I have no idea how to apply blusher or what colour to go for.I’m a brunette.
Emma, Knocklyon
For the application of your blusher you will need a good blusher brush. I like to use the 168 Large Angle Contour Brush from MAC. This brush can also be used for contouring the face. When I am applying blusher I start on the apple of the cheek using a circular movement, and then sweep the rest of the product in an upward stroke on to the cheekbone. The trick to applying blush is to use a small amount of the product and a very light pressure, building the colour as you go.
Hi Emma, I love Halloween too and I always go for the scary look aswell. What I would suggest is to check online as you can find some amazing hair and makeup looks which may help inspire you for this ‘Hallows’Eve.If you google whatever you’re thinking of, there’s sure to be other people’s attempts at it, like the‘Black Swan’look below. There are also plenty of step-by-step tutorial videos available to watch for free.It has really given me some good ideas and I think this year I will join you on the pretty Halloween look.

Samantha, Cookstown Hi Samantha,The first thing to do is to look at your skin tone.Just like hair colour varies widely among brunettes, skin tones differ too–from olive to very fair.In general, brunettes can wear more dramatic shades of blush and are more likely to be able to handle deeper and brighter shades such as mauve and hot pink. Your hair colour matters, too: the darker the hair, the brighter the colour.

Lawns As autumn turns to winter, try and make the most of any dry days and rake the lawn to keep it free of leaves. A thick layer of leaves will damage a lawn and weaken the grass, and it also provides winter shelter for unwelcome garden pests. Avoid walking on your lawn if it’s frosted, as this can also damage the grass. With summer at an end and autumn just around the corner now is a good time to take a good look at your garden.Look around carefully, note your triumphs and your disappointments, and make changes toward the end of this month. It’s time to think of ordering those new roses, shrubs, and other plants that you need. Regularly remove wilted flowers from Dahlias, Gegonias and Cannas to stimulate new flower growth. Summer flowering heather can be cut back. Despite the obvious benefits that container-grown plants have brought gardening, the autumn is still the best time for planting. The soil is still warm and the autumnal rains will get them established before the winter sets in,giving a good start for the next season. Now is also the perfect time to move or plant Evergreen and Coniferous plants. When moving Evergreens, do make sure that you retain a good ball of undisturbed soil around their roots and plant them no deeper than the original depth. Firm them in well using your heel rather than the flat of your foot and water them in well, ensuring that the foliage is also wetted.
Seeds Sow sweet peas in the greenhouse or a cold frame for early summer flowers next year. They’ll grow as soon as the weather gets warm enough, and will be ready for planting out next spring. Wildlife Migrant birds such as Swallows and House Martins will begin flying south for the winter so keep bird feeders and birdbaths topped up to encourage more birds to visit your garden as autumn sets in. Ladybugs and Lacewings eat Aphids such as Blackfly and Whitefly that will destroy crops, so plant bright flowers such as Candytuft, Sunflowers and Marigolds, and create places where these bugs can shelter and lay their eggs. How to prevent dirty fingernails To help prevent the build-up of dirt under your fingernails while you work in the garden, rub your fingernails across a bar of soap and you’ll successfully seal the undersides of your nails so dirt can’t collect beneath them. Then, after you’ve finished in the garden, use a nailbrush to remove the soap and your nails will be sparkling clean. The next time you boil or steam vegetables, don’t pour the water down the sink, when cool use it to water your potted patio plants and you’ll be astonished at how the plants respond to the vegetable soup. Proper timing makes all the difference when it comes to planting your garden.Try and learn how long each plant needs to grow to full development, what time of year it should be planted: early spring or summer or autumn, and when to begin to plant your seedlings.
Knowing these details will help make the difference between a successful and unsuccessful garden. The pond Fallen leaves can cause problems for your pond at this time of year. The leaves should be fished out frequently using a fishing net.Another way is to cover the pond with netting during the autumn months. It is very important to clean the pond thoroughly before winter. This can help to prevent a build-up on the bed of the pond during the winter months as well as the growth of algae in early spring. Remove all dead vegetation, fallen leaves and excess underwater plants, and remove the sediment from decomposing organic matter on the bed of the pond. Any material removed from the pond should be left next to the pond for a few hours, helping creatures that have accidentally been removed with this organic matter to get back into the pond. These creatures are vital for a proper balance in the pond. By the way the organic matter removed is a very good component for the compost heap.

Exercising With Back Pain
Sooner or later, you’re going to tweak your back, and there’s nothing you’ll ever experience, perhaps shy of limb dismemberment, that’ll put a stop to your training as cruelly or effectively.Of course, if you’ve already had some back problems, you know what we’re talking about. Both athletes and non-athletes get back pain. Both sedentary and active folks get back pain. Rest assured that we’ll probably tweak them here and there over the course of a lifetime, even with perfect form, ideal warm-ups and perfect workouts! Think about it this way... How many of you have a friend who has had his/her back go out simply from tying a shoe or picking up a pencil? I know of a guy who squatted over 280kg who threw out his back picking up his baby. Many spine problems are the result of years and years of cumulative trauma –repeated flexion/extension, lateral flexion and rotation.Who is to say that a lot of that trauma didn’t take place before you ever took up weight training or your sport of choice? Just ask the 4.4 per cent of six-year olds who already have spondylolysis! Everyone has known someone with back pain so bad that it stumps every doctor out there. One of my relatives, for instance, has been to hell and back with back pain since he and his moped had a disagreement several years ago, that, alongside heavy lifting in his job.Now numerous MRI scans later he still experimenting with treatments.
This actually isn’t uncommon at all. In fact, the author of one meta-analysis in the New England Journal of Medicine found that 85 per cent of back pain cases have no definitive diagnosis. It kind of makes you wonder why they do those MRIs anyway, doesn’t it? Moving on...Exercise and back pain There are, however, things you can do to see what you should do and what to avoid in the gym. The easiest way to go about this is movement mapping. Performing a series of simple movements that can help determine which ones cause more pain or less pain, and then use the results to guide you in the gym. Further, it can give you an idea of what may be wrong and what you need to do to fix it or who you need to see to get it fixed. If you would like details on movement mapping please email me on Louis@d24fitness.ie Wrap Up If your back’s holding you back, fight back and get moving again.By training around your injury and thinking about what the problem may be versus pushing through it or dropping out on it altogether, you can actually help to speed recovery and get back to a painfree life.

Tallaght AC is a prominent and rapidly growing athletic club which caters for runners and athletes of all abilities and ages.
According to Club President Kevin Reilly the club went from strength to strength though the mid nineties. He said: “ Even though the clubhouse was small it was a great focal point and a huge step up from changing on those cold damp nights at the side of the road. At the time we had our original track behind where the current track is located.“
Whether you simply want to run and train for fun or hope to compete at local, national or international level you can be assured of a big welcome at the club. The membership at the club ranges from age 7 to 68 and coaching is offered in sprints, relay events, middle distance running, long distance running, hurdles, javelin, shot putt, discus and long jump.
Under the chairmanship of Kevin O’Reilly the club pushed on with an adventurous plan to move to a new base. In 2001 the decision was made to sell the old clubhouse in order to fund the new project. In the meantime the club moved to a new track between the old one and the Greenhills Road (current track) and following endless hours of hard work by the committee Tallaght AC moved to its state of the art premises two years ago.
The club’s 400 metre track and new clubhouse is located beside Westpark Gym (near the Astro Park) just outside Tallaght Village on the Greenhills Road.Thie10,000 square foot state of the art building includes a gymnasium and shower/changing facilities. The club floodlights have even been designed to facilitate TV coverage so the track is well illuminated for the winter months.
Club PRO Ray Fitzsimons said that all new members are more than welcome.“We train at the track from 7pm to 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for the committed athlete who wants to do middle distance and long distance running we meet at the clubhouse for off-track endurance training on Monday and Wednesdays from 6pm to 7.30pm and on Sundays at 9am,” he said.
Tallaght Athletic Club is one one of the younger athletics clubs in Ireland. In 1993, Cuchulain AC and Oisin AC amalgamated to become Oisin/Cuchulain AC based in the park between Greenhills Road and Balrothery.
Club Achievements - Home to numerous national champions. - Expanding the club and building the new club house. - Club President Cecil Johnston - Coach of The Year 2009.
“I believe these facilities were the springboard for the huge growth in the number of junior members and with the amalgamation of Tallaght Athletic Club in 1997 the number of junior athletes grew further. We also adopted the name of Tallaght Athletic Club, dropping the reference to the individual clubs.”

Shamrock Rovers and Stephen Kenny Part Company September started with a certain sense of optimism for Shamrock Rovers,as it seemed the Hoops had turned the corner on a disappointing season. Whilst the Leinster Senior Cup may have been won at the beginning of the month it was Rovers’ ongoing failure to win a league game in Tallaght since May and the prospect of no European football in 2012 that saw Rovers make the decision to part company with Stephen Kenny. Kenny had come under intense pressure since the summer as his team failed to match the expectations of everyone at the club. A 4-0 away defeat in June to Bohemians and a first-stage embarrassing exit from Europe to Ekranas of Lithuania had piled the pressure on. Rovers had been unbeaten at home in the league all season, drawing eight times, until a 1-0 defeat to Bohemians brought that run to a shuddering halt. This was the final straw for the Hoops board.
The previous week Rovers had welcomed Shelbourne to Tallaght and the expectation was this would see Rovers win their first league game at home since the 3-1 win over Drogheda in mid-May. Rovers had played and beaten Shels three times up to that point in the season scoring 11 goals in the process. Leading 1-0 at half time, thanks to a well-taken goal by Ciarán Kilduff, the win seemed inevitable but the Hoops couldn’t get that second goal and allowed Shels to come back into the game conceding two goals after a couple of defensive errors by Rovers. A point was rescued by Ronan Finn’s seventh-league goal of the season seven minutes from time. Threedayslater, itwastheturnofBohemianstocometoTallaght and this time there was no equaliser that Rovers could find having conceded a late first half goal. BARBER & SHAVING PARLOUR
SHANE O’CONNOR Former Irish under 21 international Shane O’Connor will hopefully bring some top level experience to the Hoops. Shane O’Connor joined Rovers at the closure of the domestic transfer window and made his debut for Rovers in September in the Leinster Senior Cup final. He missed the subsequent 2-2 draw with Shelbourne but did start in the games against Bohs and the cup quarter final against Shels. In the second half of that game with the Hoops, down to 10 men, O’Connor was deployed in an unorthodox back three arrangement with Pat Sullivan and Kerrea Gilbert as the Hoops sought to chase an equaliser that never came. The 22 year-old was signed from his home town club of Cork City during the summer where he had struggled to hold down a place making only five league appearances. The left sided player played as a youth with Roy Keane’s former club Rockmount. Having joined Liverpool from there as a youth team player, O’Connor made the switch to Ipswich who were managed by Keane at the time. The former Ireland under 21 international played 17 times for Ipswich with his last appearance coming in a League Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates. He had a loan spell with Port Vale before making the move back to Ireland earlier this year.
Less than 24 hours later, Stephen Kenny was no longer the manager at Shamrock Rovers. The Hoops Chairman Jonathan Roche said,“We have not taken this decision lightly and we are extremely disappointed with the turn of events. However, the club feels that this is the right decision at this time.” Stephen Glass stepped up to manage the team in the next game, a game that saw Rovers eliminated from the FAI Cup by Shelbourne 2-1 in Tolka Park. The search for Rovers’ 25th FAI Cup win goes on for another season as Rovers meekly exited the competition at the quarterfinal stage. It was a meg-shift defensive formation for Rovers who only had one centre-half,Ken Oman, fit for the game and he was sent off before half time. They also had to deal with Stephen Rice going off with a nasty head injury that meant he left the ground in an ambulance. A late Sean Gannon free kick gave the score a better look than was probably merited. The result means that Rovers face a battle to even qualify to play in Europe next season, which is a remarkable turnaround after last year’s European success. Rovers are just one place but five points off the automatic qualification spot, nine points clear of the team in fifth place. This means that they will be relying on either Drogheda United or Saint Patrick’s Athletic to win the FAI Cup to free up a European place for Rovers.
