Hi everyone, Welcome to the early October edition of your InTallaght magazine. This edition we have a very exciting interview with former XFactor winner Matt Cardle.I met up with Matt in The Herbert Park Hotel recently to speak about the launch of his new album which will be out at the end of this month. Matt was absolutely lovely and spoke with so much passion about his music. His album is a credit to him and I predict that this one will be another top-seller. Check out my review on page 36! Local band The Fresh Kills also chat to us about their Summer of festivals, their influences and which Irish bands they admire.The lads are fast making a name for themselves on the music scene and have a lot of potential for success. In news we look back on the FAI Football for All event, we speak to Louise Philips after the launch of her, already, hugely popular book and we take a look at the local talent who played a big part in Dublin’s win of the All-Ireland Minor Football title. St Anne’s GAA Club in Bohernabreena was celebrating last week after two members of the club helped the Dublin Minor Football team to victory against Meath in the All Ireland Final. LORCAN Molloy was in goals and club Chairman Alan “Nipper” McNally was one of the selectors for the victorious Dubs as they won their first All Ireland at Minor level since 1984. It was an extra special day because they were sensationally beaten in last year’s final by Tipperary. Club PRO at St Anne’s Linda Harbron said everyone at the club was delighted with the victory and the part played by the two St Anne’s men. “Our congratulations go out to Lorcan Molloy and Nipper McNally on winning the minor All Ireland Title in Croke Park v Meath. It’s a very proud moment for both of the
lads and also for the club which they have both done so very proud. Congratulations to Dessie,his management team and all the players and backroom staff.,“ she said. Both men arrived back to the club to a rapturous reception on Tuesday,September 25. A big crowd assembled to greet the lads and show their appreciation for all the work they’ve put in this year. There was also a great link to Dublin’s previous triumph at Minor level in 1984 also as a Dublin selector that day was St Anne’s man Kit McNally, the father of Nipper who had the same role this year.
The launch of writer Louise Phillips’ new book Red Ribbons, in Hughes and Hughes in Stephen’s Green SC last month, was the biggest in the bookseller’s 26 year history.
“The launch night in Hughes & Hughes was a massive success.It was the biggest and most successful launch in the booksellers 26 year history with over 300 people attending. I was signing books for over two hours, and many left with their books unsigned as the queue was far too long. “The night was launched by Niamh O'Connor, Crime Editor of The Sunday World, who described Red Ribbons as 'brilliant', and who complimented me on both the research put into Red Ribbons, and the psychological element of it, saying she really thinks I can read minds.” After only one week of sales Red Ribbons reached the Irish Bestseller Listing, with very formidable and well established writers, coming in at number 7. As well as the great sales figures, Louise is also very happy with the response from people who have reviewed her book.
The novel is a psychological thriller about a killer who targets young girls and the efforts of a criminal psychologist to get to the bottom of the case.
“Red Ribbonsgot the thumbs up from both Declan Burke, of the Herald, and Sue Leonard, of the Irish Examinerand it has also received a ton of five-star reviews on Amazon,” she said.

Kind-hearted staff at Tesco have baked their way to a generous €1,197 for the store’s charity of the year. The cake and book sale, which saw staff members, family members and customers donate a host of tasty treats, books, CDs and DVDs, was organised by the Tesco Tallaght Team and the proceeds will now go to National Charity Aware. Hilary Bennett, Charity of the Year Champion, at Tesco Tallaght said: “We are delighted to have raised over €1,100 for Aware and we would like to thank our customers for their support, with donations and contributions, which helped to make it such a success.” Aware is the national organisation providing information, support and education around depression, a condition which affects more than 450,000 people in Ireland (one in 10) at any one time. Funds raised during the partnership in 2012 will go towards Beat the Blues, Aware’s free secondary schools programme which helps
create a better understanding of issues amongst pupils, teachers and parents. Depression affects many teenagers in Ireland and funds raised through the Tesco Charity of the Year partnership will enable Aware to deliver Beat the Blues to approximately 16,000 additional teenagers this year. The charity was chosen as Tesco’s Charity of the Year for 2012 and 2013 earlier this year. The inaugural Football For All National Club Festival took place in Tallaght Stadium recently - and everyone had a ball. Almost 200 children with various disabilities representing 14 community football clubs from the Republic of Ireland, and one club from Wales, participated on a very sunny Sunday September afternoon. Children of all ages from 6 years to 14 years old enjoyed a great day’s football where the message was clear that everyone has the right to play football. The day gave families of the 170 players a chance to come along and enjoy the football but also get information on the programme and enjoy the variety of family entertainment, inflatables, street skills events, face painting, music and a BBQ. Oisin Jordan from the FAI is the National Cordinator of the FFA Programme who said he was delighted with the event. “The day was a great success.The event gave the children an opportunity to show what they can do and also gave their families the chance to see what it is all about and how they can get involved while enjoying an afternoon of fun and entertainment in the home of Shamrock Rovers.” The FFA Programme is sponsored by The National Dairy Council and their Chairman Jackie Cahill said the company love being involved. “The NDC is delighted to be involved in such a worthwhile programme which promotes inclusion and provides all players with the opportunity to become part
of a team.The NDC hopes that by lending support to this worthy event,more individuals will become involved, furthering the potential for the programme to reach out to those who may benefit, not only from physical exercise but regular social interaction.” The FFA Programme gives players with disabilities between the age of 6 and 14 years the opportunity to get regular football training and competition through a local community club in their area. The training they receive is professional and delivered by qualified FAI coaches recruited through a network of FFA coaches from partnerships developed by the FAI and the business community. Entourage was mobbed with Austin Powers fans recently when the biggest, yet smallest, star of the film made an appearance at the popular club. The event, which took place on Saturday, September 22, seen a host of fans dance the night away before the arrival of actor Vern Troyer, at 1am. The ‘Mini Me’ star drove a motorized scooter into the venue and was surrounded by bodyguards as he made his way to the DJ box to say how happy he was to be partying in Tallaght. He then went across the club and over to the VIP section where he sat at a table patiently posing for photos with the hundreds who had queued up in wait for him. The actor, who was made famous through his role in Austin Powers with Mike Myers, shook hands and had a chat with all of his fans before leaving again on his scooter – his own entourage in tow.
One excited visitor to the club told InTallaght:“This place gets better and better with all the big names they bring in [both Mark Wright and Bressie have both appeared at the club in recent months]. I love Austin Powers and it’s such a thrill to meet Mini Me in the flesh too!”

After three generations of creating excellence and the finest quality meat around O’Coileáin butchers has arrived in Tallaght marking the opening of its fourth shop in four years. The store, which has branches in Leopardstown, Foxrock and a counter in The Market store in Stepaside has been welcoming customers to its outlet on Level 1 since August and with its award-winning sausages and home-grown beef and lamb the unmistakable taste has customers returning time and again. After years of butchering and farming on the lush plains in the heartland of Co Meath the O’Coileáin family offers something more than simply meat behind a counter. Butcher and proprietor Mick Collins said:“Just last week we had a lady come in who was wondering how to cook a rack of lamb.She later emailed asking what she should do and we emailed her back with instructions.
“We make up our own sauces and cook up different flavours but if somebody wants something in particular all they have to do is ask – we take orders by email or whatever way is most convenient. “Your food really is our passion.” By using their own beef and lamb as well as from their partnered producers the O’Coileáin family knows exactly what field from which each particular animal came from. Mick said:“We concentrate on using traditional beef and lamb breeds such as Angus, Herefords and Suffolk’s coupled with traditional farming methods in modern day systems to ensure we produce a product that has an abundance of flavour and taste. “We hang our Beef for 21 days and our Lamb for 14 days to allow it mature naturally which enhances the tenderness of our products. Such dedication to the Process guarantees a product that is of the highest quality for cooking and eating and you won’t find a meat as tender and tasty as what we offer.” The shops pork products are also sourced locally in County Meath via the extended family and are the means to which O’Coileáin has produced award-winning sausages.The products have scooped the title of winner of the Leinster Champion Gold Awards for both specialty Sausages and Breakfast sausages in both 2010 and 2011 and the four stores are home to the O’Coileáin infamous rack of pork. Customers to the Tallaght store can also expect the delicious smell of cooking when they enter the shop with daily tasters of sausages and different meats on hand as shoppers are often encouraged to ‘try before they buy’. Over the past two years he has experienced everything from the highs of instant fame and a platinumselling album to the lows of the rocky patch he hit earlier this year when he parted ways with his label and split from his long-term girlfriend – but not one to sit around and mope he vented his heartbreak through his lyrics and was snapped up by independent So What? Recordings within weeks.
Now this month he launches his second album,The Fire, on which he plays everything from the guitar to the piano, and despite nerves over how it will be received he is every inch the proud man when Editor, Emer Mulvaney catches up with him in the plush Herbert Park Hotel on a wet and windy morning. There he talks heartache with humour and reveals the reason he can’t watch The X Factor…
Also in the production, because I was so close to the record I wanted to carry on being that close to it and just to have it sound exactly how I wanted it to sound so I was there. I produced the album, I was there with the mix engineers – to their despair at some stages of the game – with me pulling it back from the manufacturers. I wasn’t happy with the way this and that was sounding and I had almost too much control I think!
So your change of So tell me about the label had a big album Matt. How impact on this one? would you describe it and how does it compare to the last one – Letters? I don’t know how it compares to the last album but work-wise I had raging insomnia. I got to write exactly how I wanted to with this album for a start.The last one there was a certain amount of…well a certain lack of control over which direction I could have taken but I didn’t sway too far from what I would have done. I think more than anything it was production on the last album that maybe wasn’t the way I would have done it personally which is, maybe, this time why I would have retained control over all stages of the creative process in that I’ve written it and recorded it myself in the studio in LA and London and Canada.You know I played the drums on it and all the guitar and the bass and the piano.When the piano pieces got really complicated I got my pianist to do it because I’m not really as good as I want to be and obviously the violins on it I got a violin player to play - but the more of myself I put into it at the top and out the other side, the more of me that was there and the more honest it would become.
Oh absolutely yeah once we changed and we were free from Sony and Syco and everything like that my manager said “write whatever you like” – “write the album you want” and I was like ‘brilliant….what the hell do I do?’ You know where I had those guidelines before they completely disappeared.It took me a few days and weeks, and a few tracks under my belt, to figure out what direction I was going in.Then it was full steam ahead in that vein.
What are you like through the production process – would you describe yourself as fussy? Oh my God yeah! I drive myself insane. At times I would be in the studio in London and it would just be me and the engineer and the mic and I would

have control over the delete, rewind, record function on Protools, or whatever it was we were using, and I was just going around in circles because I was producing it. Usually you have someone there going“that was a take, that was the one,” but because I was that person too there were times when I was like ‘shit, I’ve done 50 takes of the same chorus,I could have had five incredible takes’ – I don’t know, I’m too picky so every now and again I drafted someone in – be it my manager or my engineer or a friend and I’d go ‘look listen to that, was that good or was it shit? Because I think it’s all shit!
So how long did the process start from you started writing it, through production and the final copy? Seven months…Ever since I finished the tour really but even when I was on the tour I started writing and a bit before the tour so about seven months or a bit more.
And you wrote the majority of it – you co-wrote some of the tracks? Yeah I wrote most of it and co-wrote a lot of it aswell – it was amazing to do. I did a lot of writing at the piano too. I bought a piano last Christmas and funnily enough a couple of key tracks on the album for me I started writing on the piano.Because I am a guitarist I play piano like a guitarist and I was in a writing session with this guy one time who was an amazing concert pianist and I showed him something that I had written and he was like ‘how the hell?’he couldn’t get his head round it – he couldn’t play it for 10 or 15 minutes.He was saying you’re playing that like a guitar rift kind of thing and it goes the other way aswell. I know a guitarist that I met from LA playing a gig years ago, who was a pianist and then a guitarist, and she plays guitar like a piano. Plucking strings like a piano….[pauses] I don’t know why I am going on about this [laughs]
So you reckon you can detect if somebody is a guitarist playing the piano then?
I think so, yes, but well it depends, I suppose it’s down to writing aswell – like the songs that I was writing on the piano were sort of guitary/guitar-based songs, because I wasn’t as good as I wanted to be on the piano I’d be holding the guitar on my lap at the piano and figuring it out so it’s kind of a mis-match really. There’s a song on there called All That Matters which I wrote just solely on the piano and so it’s just piano and vocals. I think it’s a great track but it’s just a new venture for me.It brings up a whole new style of writing on the piano too because you’ve got two hands and the melody is in your right hand.
For you do the lyrics come first then, or does the music come first or is it a bit of a mix? It’s a bit of a mix of both really.The most ideal situation is when they come together but that rarely happens and when it does it’s kind of a magical moment – if it’s the right lyric and you’ve nailed it like that then that’s it.Quite often it’s the melody first or if you have a lyrical idea you try and think of a nice way of putting it. Sometimes you can just be talking though, like when I’m in a writing session with someone I just like to spend a good couple of hours just talking about it and if I want to write a song about something then all of a sudden I’ll go that’s it… because when you are talking about things with someone you’ll realise things what you wouldn’t realise on your own because you don’t talk to yourself – you can think about stuff and you can kind of ask yourself questions if you’re a bit…well sort of like that! [Laughs] Talking though makes you realise ‘Oh My God that’s actually how I felt about that’and lyrics can come from that.
In terms of influence is it things that are happening in your own life? Yeah for this album it was all about the breakdown of my relationship.Relationships are the thing I write about most because it’s what gets me emotionally charged.It’s all about feelings and I think for everyone it’s similar. I mean if you look at most songs out there, they are all about relationships and love and this kind of stuff and every now and again you get a song about a party but it’s bollox – it doesn’t mean anything it’s just a party song like – ‘I got a feeling tonight’s going to be a good night’ it’s a good feeling and it makes you feel great when you’re going out partying but you don’t take anything from it apart from bang it on,turn it up and get smashed.I mean look at Adelle.21.If she hadn’t got her heart smashed to pieces….
Yes, Adelle and where she is going is on everyone’s lips – she’s so happy now with her new man and being pregnant! The big question is what is she going to write about next? Well let’s hope to God he doesn’t leave her – bless her heart! Unfortunately my relationship fell apart but it fell apart at the very end of my tour which was the point at which I needed to start really writing and so that’s what I wrote about and I wrote about it from lots of different angles. I mean there are two songs on the album that are nothing to do with it and the other eight are all about it.There are ones looking at it from a positive slant, ones looking at it from a desperately unhappy slant and some looking at it from a kind of angry slant – there is every kind of emotion on there and it’s quite obvious when you listen how different the feelings and emotions are.
And is it cliché or is therapeutic to write through it?
It really is quite therapeutic to write about it.It’s like counseling at times when you sit down and talk about it.You are really working though what are,nine times out of 10,problems.
When people listen to the album do you think they will be surprised or will they think ‘yeah that’s him.’ It’s very different, you know, it’s kind of loose and a bit more raw,more honest about now for me and way more upbeat than the first album. We had some beautiful songs on the first album and a couple of upbeat tracks and then when it came to tour it was like ‘oh we’ve only got three that are going to get people going, and shit where are we going to put them?’ but now it’s take your pick! Obviously the ones that are desperately unhappy are the ones that are just piano and vocals and everything else is just really in your face.

So you are single still? Are you ready to be happy? Yeah I am. I think I’ve got enough time between this album and the next album to have a relationship and have it fall apart…[laughs]
The X Factor is on at the moment – are you watching it? No I don’t have an arial so I have to either watch Blue Planet or go out!
Does it feel like forever since those days [X Factor]?
that’s what you want to do but I’m doing my thing. I’ve always done my thing and I kind of got to do it on the first album with Sony but now I’m really doing my thing and I didn’t realise how much more of me I could put into it until now.
Yes we had lunch last week – she’s just incredible and I could talk forever and a day about her. She’s amazing.
No you just smile! When people stop you – I’m the same I mean I would never be rude to anyone and I’ve never not got time for anyone unless I’m late for something, I’ll have a photo and smile and talk to matey boy’s gran on the phone! I just appreciate what I’ve been given and what I’ve been given is 90 per cent down to the fact that I have fans out there and that’s amazing.
No, not really, it’s only just two years since I actually got on the show. It’s two years and three weeks since I actually entered the contestant house.Two years is a long time but it flies by.
So you think that there are certain types of musicians that are suited? Oh yeah, definitely. Syco does certain types of things to perfection like your JLS, your One Direction, your Olly Murs and Cher Lloyd and that’s brilliant and amazing if
And what about Dannii [Minogue] do you keep in touch?
How do you think you’ve changed since you started? It’s huge fame – was Has she been there for it hard to adapt? you the whole time sinceThe X factor?
Is it a lot of pressure after selling two million albums and singles, combined, When you look back last time round? on those days now how do you feel about the X Factor? Brilliant – it’s where I got my break and I am eternally grateful to the show and for the opportunity that it gave me and to Sony and Modest and everyone who saw me through that initial album phase.To everyone who voted for me too thank you and I am eternally grateful. Now it’s new and fresh and I’m in control and I’m now where I always wanted to be. Signed to an independent label, in control of my album, my music and my career and not part of this huge machine that bulldozes its way through the industry but One Direction and those kind of bands are just perfect for it.
specifically but I thought the idea and the way he went about it was just brilliant.
God yeah! But it’s one of those things – I know this album is better by miles, well I feel it is but people might prefer Letters and, don’t get me wrong I loved the first album, I’m not doing it down,I just feel I’ve moved on since then as a writer, a person and an artist and I’m all about The Fire now! I want people to be as all about it as I am – if not more.
Gary Barlow previously wrote a single for you – what do you now think of him being a judge or maybe you haven’t seen any of it since he joined? No I seen the year previous and I think he’s cool! He’s a genius songwriter and I love what he did with the Commonwealth song. I watched that documentary about what he did and how he did it.I wasn’t a huge fan of the song itself or the lyrical content and the melodies
Oh God yeah she has been one of the most supportive and continues to be one of the most supportive people around – even when she’s on the other side of the world.
Did she listen to any of your album in production? Absolutely, yes and she was there especially when I made the changeover from Sony.
Was that a tough period? I had a bit of a wobble I’m not going to lie. It was scary but we had major labels and independent labels,coming knocking on the door as soon as they heard I left,so there was never any doubt that we would sign another deal, it was just that interim period realising‘hold on a minute I’m unsigned.’ I mean I spent 15 years unsigned, then I get a record deal and nine months later I’m unsigned again but within a month we had a deal wrapped up again.
In terms of your family, how has home life changed? So many artists say their family ‘keeps them grounded’ how true is that of you - you seem very

downtoearthanyway? Well I don’t go home that often any more.I live in London now on my own.I used to live with my girlfriend but now I live on my own. I don’t need any help keeping my feet on the ground, my feet are nailed to the ground – or in the same respect keeping a head on my shoulders and keeping it the same size – I’m very aware of how things happen and why they happen. I love my Mum and Dad to pieces and my friends and they all have a go at me if I haven’t been home for two months but it’s cool. I have nieces and nephews now that I miss and if I haven’t been home for a couple of months they’re suddenly talking and that’s crazy.
So The Fire is out Oct 26 – when can we expect to see you back in Ireland? Well I’ve a couple of dates after the launch in the UK and after that I want to tour as widely as possible. I want to push this album all over the world. For Ireland it will be really soon though – it’s true!

And how did you meet up? The Fresh Kills is a Tallaght-based Indie rock/electronic band which has been together for a year and is just about to release its third EP.
InTallaght Magazine caught up with lead vocalist Alan Tierney for a chat about where the band has been and where to next....
So you guys are all from Tallaght?
So how long have you guys been together?
The rest of the lads all are,I’m from Clondalkin.That’s why they get me to do the talkin’!
We’ve been going since last August 2011. Myself, Ross and Dylan were in a band before.
That’s a weird one! I was working as a tour guide in Newgrange and the lads were on a tour there. They already knew me and knew I was a musician and they asked me was I still playing and would I be interested in joining them. I said I would and we went from there. So we met in Newgrange!
How would you describe your sound? I would describe our sound as rock/indie, or dance/rock. It’s a mix of dance synth, loud guitars, pounding drum and bass with a lot of vocals.

Who are your main influences? The band's main influences in our sound are Primal Scream, Radiohead, The Prodigy, Kasabian, The Stone Roses and The Arctic Monkeys.We also love The Beatles and Oasis.
What can people who attend your gigs expect? We aim to keep the people dancing at our live shows with massive drum beats , thunderous basslines and our very own distinctive sound of three main vocalists and catchy dance synth riffs.We also like to mix things up, at our latest gigs we have a burlesque act performing at the interval, which is quite shocking for the crowd!
How much music have you guys recorded?
What other current Irish bands do you like?
We have already recorded two EPs and our third, and newest, EP is out since September. We recorded our debut video “Hijack” in the Helix a few weeks back too.
Bi Polar Empire,even though they are friends of ours they are a great band.
Have you be playing any of the festivals this summer? Yes we played the Strawberry Festival in Wexford and we done Knoacknastocken as well.We had great craic at both of them and really enjoyed playing.
What are your goals for the band? Well we are all in this for the love of music.These days you can’t aim for a record deal,you got to love music,you don’t really get into music today for easy money.We just want to make as good a record as possible and put on as good a gig as possible. I love playing live, it’s just something we all enjoy doing.The camaraderie, the way you can have the most unbelievable night ever after a gig!

The shop, which is one of the most popular retailers in Ireland,has a fantastic unit on Level 2 and has proven a huge hit with all of you in a very short space of time.
kids can be and what better place to be taking on challenges than the well-organised and safe environment of the centre.The day also seen a bungee jump with a trampoline and face painters were on hand to create characters galore.This event is definitely one to look out for in the future. At this stage you will have seen the coverage of our community Champions Bridie Sweeney and Kitty Raftery.It is such a pleasure meeting these people and hearing their stories about how they have made a difference in our community is humbling. We are really enjoying rewarding them for their hard work – now we want to do the same with our local children. We are, therefore, launching the junior version called Little Starz. Little Starz will see children who do good deeds, are helpful to their parents or neighbours or have been through a tough time and deserve a treat, rewarded for their goodness. Every alternate month to The Community Champion award we will announce the winner of Little Starz and present them with a little prize after which they will go on to be included in out Little Starz ‘hall of fame!’ For now though enjoy all the wonderful news and photos in this issue and I will catch up with you later on in the month.

Thrill-seekers turned out in their hundreds to the Square’s adventure day recently where an indoor climbing wall and bungee trampoline kept visitors entertained for up to six hours.
The event,which was held on Saturday,September 29 from 12-6pm, seen shoppers and families turn out in their droves for the action-packed day during where face painters were on hand to entertain the smaller children. All ages and sizes took on the challenge of the wall with brave youngsters getting into their safety gear and fearlessly scaling the impressive structure while others catapulted towards the famous glass pyramid. Commercial Manager Cathryn McMenamy said:“There was a fantastic buzz about the centre and there were people lining up throughout the day to take part.We got great feedback from visitors and their families and it is definitely something we will look at doing again. “It’s not just about shopping and eating at The Square it’s about fun too,” she added.

THE beautiful outdoor garden at The National Children’s Hospital has been officially opened and is every inch the fun place we imagined it would be. After donating €10k to the project The Square is thrilled with the garden which is the fruits of many a charitable community person’s labour. Director of Retail at The Square Jack Martin said:"We are absolutely delighted to have funded the project in this way. The garden is a credit to all who worked on it and will improve the quality of life of so many of the hospital's children." The outdoor space, which adjoins the existing indoor playroom is a maze of delightful nooks and crannies and comes complete with a stage, a storytelling booth, a ‘’messy’’art area and chill out zone.Last year the hospital approached leading Architect Dermot Bannon to take on the challenge of designing a fun and vibrant outdoor area that would allow young patients enjoy fresh air and find respite from their medical care. Ciara O’Grady is Director of Fundraising and Events at the hospital said: “The overwhelming generosity of countless suppliers, corporate donors and tradespeople who have given their time and resources for free have made it possible for us to achieve our goal.For most children and their families a stay at hospital can trigger anxiety and distress.This new play space allows the children get fresh air, lift their mood and makes their overall hospital stay a little more fun.’’ The concept of the garden was borne out of Dermot Bannon’s observation of children’s love of parks. The abundance of wood, plants and the strong focus on natural light combine to bring the garden theme to life and succeed in achieving a dramatically different environment from that of the hospital.When developing concepts for the design Dermot had to consider that the area needed to appeal to a wide range of age groups from toddlers through to early teens. With this in mind he introduced a number of individual circular play areas or ‘’pods’’. Each pod has a unique function and it is this diversity that makes it easy for each child to find a space that suits them best.Children will be encouraged to bring their own toys, games and books out to the garden and once there, they can make it their own. One of the outstanding features of the garden is an eight feet long, custom-made multi-cultured mosaic. Local Transition Year students, under the supervision of
community artists Katy and Karim Seddiq, created the mosaic over a five-week period. The design is abstract with elements of nature incorporated such as water, plants and stars. Pop Sensations Jedward took time out of their busy schedule to join young patients in experiencing the new and unique area for the first time. Keeping their trademark quiffs in place they entertained and put smiles on the faces of children, parents and staff. The entire process behind the planning and development of the rooftop garden has been filmed for RTE’s programme Room to Improve presented by Dermot Bannon and produced by CocoProductions.It will be aired on RTE 1 in the Autumn.

Colour Codes To Steer Square Visitors In The Right Direction Finding your way around The Square these days couldn't be easier thanks to the new colour-coding of each level.
During the Summer we launched our Community Champion award aimed at honouring the special local people who make a difference. Bridie Sweeney, a volunteer of 50 years in Tallaght, was the first lady to be honoured at the launch of The Square's magazine with InTallaght and the new website. At the announcement Bridie was presented with a €100 card for The Square and a beautiful bunch of flowers. Bridie went on to nominate her friend Kitty Raftery, who has done enormous work with Tallaght Senior Citizen’s Club and who acts like a friend and family member to over 100 people who attend the club in Kiltipper. Kitty was awarded the title in September. The Community Champion will be awarded every second month with the next one due to be presented in November. If you have someone you think is worthy of the title, who works hard in their community and is somewhat of an unsung hero then nominate them by emailing editor@genesismedia.ie or presenting their name, age, a few short details on them and your contact number to the reception desk in the Square and they could be on the receiving end of a €100 gift card and our new trophy in the very near future.

In an effort to make your shopping journey from arriving to leaving, clear and understandable we have allocated a colour to each level and updated the store directory, on entering, so you never get confused again. Level 1,the Multi-Storey entrance,is now the Blue level, Level 2, the Blue Bridge and Luas entrance, is Orange and Level 3, the Cinema entrance, is Green. Each colour allocation is carried through from the main entrance doors, which all have colour straps, and the lifts to the car park barriers. It is also shown on our website and our Autumn Discount Booklet is also designed to reflect what should be an altogether better shopping experience. There was huge excitement in The Square on Thursday the 27th when the long-awaited and highly-anticipated H&M finally opened its doors to the public. Situated on Level 2 the store, which caters for women and children, is ideally placed and was drawing a crowd from 8.30am. Excited shoppers gathered on the red carpet from early on in the morning with the promise of vouchers of between €5 and €50 for the first 100 while,in addition, The Square gave out €20 gift cards. As DJ Danelion pumped out the tunes hairdressers and nail technicians set up to the right as the crowd ascended the stairs towards the newly refitted H&M store. As the clocked ticked nearer the 11am open time men, women and children added to the queue until the hundreds in it saw it eventually curve around the corner and beyond. As the clock struck the eleventh hour the shutter went up and the crowds were allowed to enter in stages.
All across the walls were the signature blazers and jeans which H&M customers have become accustomed to alongside pretty accessories and shoes. Store Manager Laura Culligan said:“We are thrilled to finally be open.The shop looks fantastic and the build up has been brilliant.We are really looking forward to what’s ahead.” Square Management, which has been plugging the opening of the store for weeks, has said it is thrilled with the success of the opening. Director of Retail Jack Martin said:“H&M coming to The Square is indicative of the type of quality stores operating in the centre and the type of those to come.The shop is a very popular retail outlet and its location in the centre is prime giving that section of level 2 is fast becoming our high street retail area which is very popular.” Commercial Manager Cathryn McMenamy added:“There has been a huge buzz around the opening of H&M for quite some time. Customers have been very excited about the prospect of the store coming to The Square and the opening event was even bigger than any of us expected. “The amount of people who turned up so early in the morning to queue up for a first look was inspiring and we are confident that H&M will deliver everything our customers have come to expect. We welcome the arrival of the chain and look forward to its increased success.”

There's no denying that Cheryl Cole (or is it just Cheryl? I’m still confused!) is a beautiful creature. All beautiful hair (extensions) and fabulously trim body with eyes you could get lost in and an accent…well let’s not go there. My point is it’s a good thing she’s absolutely fabulous and beautiful and really quite likeable – because she has a voice like her crash test dummy buddy Will.I.Am.
The pre-release copy of this album has been playing in the office for the best part of a week and if one thing has come out of its repeat cycle it’s this – a unanimous decision that Matt Cardle has an unbelieveable voice. It’s distinctive and melodic and trickles over the words of his carefully penned songs like honey and is a fine followup to his platinum-selling debut album Letters. Most tracks, which were written following the break-up of his relationship, are songs which got him through a tough time but also speak volumes about the direction he was heading.
Ok I jest, it’s not that they have similar voices, how would I know, neither of them use them! They have simply both fallen into the trap of synthesizerreliance and this has never been more obvious that with her new – post-disaster-jubilee performance – single Under The Sun. Although not as heavily reliant as her mate there’s a tininess to Cheryl’s voice on the track that leaves it unnatural-sounding.It’s saved in part, however, by a catchy tune in fairness and a number, which sees Cheryl is back to her happy self.
Lyrics like“Don’t let it push you to your knees,you don’t have to fall, lean on me. It has no use any more. Just get a hold of your heart and set it on fire.You don’t need it now, you’ll be alright,”are indicative of the fight to get on with his life post relationship break-up and form the basis for the first single from the album, It’s Only Love, which, I predict, will be nothing short of a pop scene cracker. It takes a few listens to really get into it but that’s what radio airplay is all about. His own act is a tough one to follow having sold over two million albums and singles, combined, worldwide but this 10-track album, which also features a beautiful cover of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,has every chance of blowing Matt’s first offering out of the water.

The tablet - highly priced at around the €700 mark here in Ireland for the 64GB version - has the same brushed metal and concentric circle design. The chassis is crafted from aluminium and you'll find a 10.1-inch Gorilla Glass display staring up at you when you lift the tablet out of the box. There are subtle differences, however. The Transformer Pad Infinity is a hair thicker, with 0.2mm of added girth, although weight-wise it stays at the same 635g as the Prime – lighter than the new iPad.
The real difference lies in the beefed up resolution of the screen. As with Apple’s new iPad, Asus has taken its original model and crammed more pixels onto the display. You’re given a 1920 x 1200 resolution in place of the Prime's 1280 x 800, although the brightness has been kept at 600nits. Elsewhere the similarities continue.The Asus Transformer Pad Infinity runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. We haven’t heard yet whether an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is inbound, although it’s sensible to assume we will see one before the year is out.
Power is provided courtesy of the Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU - which has become de rigueur for top-tier Android tablets. Special mention goes to the Infinity Pad’s gaming prowess, since the fantastic screen and beefy processor will combine to run any game you’d care to download from the Google Play store. Any Android fan should undoubtedly have this at the top of their next purchase list but for those who still aren’t too certain there’s plenty here that sets this aside from the glut of other tablets on the shelves.

Watch Dogs was announced at this year’s E3 as a surprise game by Ubisoft and is an openworld adventure set in a near future city of Chicago. You play as protagonist Aiden Pearce who is a skilled Hacker. Anything in the city that is on its central operating system (COS) Aiden can hack and turn on his enemies. In the trailer shown, Aiden hacks Cell phones to enter an Art Exhibition to find out about his target, then hacks the traffic lights to cause a crash to trap his target and bodyguards. Aiden can also hack into the COS to find out about a target or NPC’s health, history or likelihood to be violent. As well as being an extraordinary hacker, Aiden is also pretty good with using guns.Throughout the game Aiden gets into fire fights.In the trailer shown he gets into one with security at the Art Exhibit and a second with his main target and his bodyguards. In the process of this fight he sets about picking up an M4 assault rifle.The way Aiden handles weapons leads us to believe that he might be Ex Special Forces,as no civilian would have as good of a grip on weapons and hacking as he does.
As well as being about hacking and shooting, stealth seems to be a heavy factor in the game. From the impression implied it seems you can take different steps to infiltrate your target building,whether you hack your way in,shoot everyone or just find a back door and sneak in.It might remind you a little bit of one of last year’s massive hits,Deus Ex,due to the fact that you can take different approaches to your target. The E3 demo also demonstrated co-op play, as the game shifted to a second character referred to as ”Bixxel_44" (controlled by a second player) following Aiden’s successful killing of his target, who was given orders to protect Aiden from the police trying to catch him by intercepting them. Ubisoft have confirmed that Watch Dogs will be multi-platform and come to Xbox 360, Playstation 3,and Microsoft Windows.The company said that Watch Dogs might also come to additional platforms.Watch Dogs is due to be released some time in 2013.

Volvo finally brings to the market a five-door hatch that can really compete with the ever-popular VW Golf. Volvo has finally kicked its strange obsession with estates, saloons and crossovers. There has been a V40 before, of course – an estate version of the original Volvo S40 but with the V50 now filling that brief, the V40 name has been passed on to Volvo’s new five-door hatchback. The new V40 is based on the three-door C30 – which, despite its good looks and ability, has not made as big an impression on Irish buyers as Volvo would have hoped. If you find the C30 too small,or the V50 too big,this could be the car you’ve been waiting for. Equally, if you think the VW Golf and Audi A3 are too common, the V40 offers a distinctively Scandinavian alternative that echoes the styling cues of Volvo's recent S60/V60 model range. Our

guess is that, no matter how sporty Volvo says the new V40 is, it will still be more comfort-oriented than an Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series – which will suit some buyers down to the ground.Also with Volvo making big claims for its ‘Designed Around You’philosophy, you'd expect excellent cabin ergonomics – from what’s been showcased at the Geneva Motor Show,it will succeed in that department. As you'd expect from Volvo, safety is also high on the agenda. Not only does it include Lane Keeping Aid and an updated version of Volvo’s City Safety system (which can now brake the car to avoid an accident at speeds of up to 31mph, rather than 19mph), but it also boasts the world’s first pedestrian airbag system. That’s right, an airbag on the outside. If front-bumper sensors detect a collision with a pedestrian, the bonnet pops up due to an airbag inflating underneath it, in front of the lower windscreen and A-pillar. It’s a clever design that should see the new V40 do very well in Euro NCAP’s far tougher pedestrian safety assessments. The new V40 is powered by a range of diesel and petrol engines.There’s a 113bhp 1.6-litre D2 entry-level turbo diesel that claims headline efficiency of 94g/km CO2 emissions on paper, and a range-topping 251bhp 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that will hit 62mph from rest in 6.7 seconds.Expect the firm’s 143bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine to feature alongside Volvo’s current D3 and D4 2.0-litre turbo diesel motors, producing 148bhp and 175bhp respectively. All engine choices are fitted with stop-start technology to help improve efficiency, although apart from the entry-level diesel engine,Volvo is yet to release any efficiency details for the new model. Prices start at just under €27,000. Ireland will get the D2, D3 diesels and T3 petrol version. There are three main specification levels - ES, SE and SE LUX - plus there is a mind-boggling number of additional ‘packs’ to help personalise your V40.

Dublin Lord Mayor Naoise O Muiri has announced that free public Wi-Fi will be rolled out at 20 parks and locations across Dublin during Innovation Week in mid-October. As well as Wi-Fi being free he wanted to ensure that the public could make practical use of it, and said the technology would be available in public parks. “The key for the city is we don’t just want to build it, the city should be building it and using it.We should be using these new networks to make our parks safer,for example. We should be using it to make people aware of what’s going on in the park.If the city is truly into digital - what are we doing with it in a practical way?” he said.
Dublin has been ranked the 30th ‘most reputable city in the world’after a global survey by a marketing and PR company. The company, Corporate Reputations and the Reputations Institute, who are based in the city centre, announced that Vancouver has jumped up nine places to become the city with the best reputation. Ireland fell six places from 24th last year. London, which was placed in the top spot in 2011, finished in 13th position this year. With a score of 66.95 out of 100, Dublin beat cities such as Perth (33rd), Milan (38th), New York (39th), Amsterdam (41st),Washington DC (44th) and Boston (50th). Over 18,874 respondents from across the G8 countries took part in the research – undertaken between April and May 2012 - which forms the basis of the annual study measuring public perceptions of 100 cities. Corporate Reputations said that underlying a city’s score are three dimensions: advanced economy, appealing environment and effective administration – the key drivers of a city’s reputation and stakeholder support – as well as the perceptions across 13 different attributes
relating to business environment, infrastructure, schools, safety, beauty and emotional appeal. Dublin scores strongest in the‘is a beautiful city’category but it came out weakest in ‘is financially stable and has a great potential for future growth’. Niamh Boyle, Managing Director of Corporate Reputations told InTallaght Magazine that how a city is perceived around the world really matters. “A strong city reputation is vitally important - it helps to attract tourists, business, foreign direct investment and foreign knowledge – both workers and students,”she said. “Dublin has maintained its overall scorings in the poll but has slipped dramatically in the rankings. This must be taken as a wake-up call. “Dublin has a major role in the overall development of the national economy,accounting for four out of every 10 jobs, almost half of all goods and services produced and nearly half of Ireland’s tax revenue. Therefore, a decline in Dublin’s reputation is also of national significance.” The other cities, which came out top in the poll, were Vienna (2nd) and Sydney (3rd). Dublin was the only Irish city to be included in the study.
The Lord Mayor, who is an engineer by profession and runs his own technology company,said he had also been lobbying to introduce 100 Mbps synchronous broadband across the city. "Many of the more connected cities in the world have that and that’s what we want," he said. Areas covered by the plan will include St Stephen’s Green, Grafton Street and Merrion Square. The council has said it must keep costs under €200,000, so it can avoid breaching EU rules on state aid which brought about the downfall of the council’s last plan to provide free internet access. As well as this Dublin’s transport is also going ‘live’ with the addition of free wifi to Dart and commuter trains. Dublin Bus is already in the process of acquiring 80 new vehicles and these are expected to be added to the existing fleet in the coming weeks. A Dublin Bus spokeswoman confirmed that it was intended to provide aWiFi service for the entire bus fleet,but that this was also“dependent on funding being available”. Wifi has been successfully trialed on two Luas trams and is expected to be provided on all trams in 2013. 36 buses in the Bus Éireann fleet are already WiFi enabled, with similar plans to roll out internet connectivity on all services later this year.
Vodafone Ireland has announced its acquisition of Dublin-based data network provider, Complete Telecom for an undisclosed sum.
The National Consumer Agency (NCA) has urged consumers to remain vigilant after its helpline received 835 scam-related queries in the past 12 months.
The deal increases the company’s managed data network solutions capabilities and offerings to the corporate,SME and public sector areas and follows on from its purchase of Dublin-based IP (Internet Protocol) network operator, Interfusion Networks early last year. Such acquisitions will be used to bolster Vodafone’s new Enterprise Customer Solutions division and position the company as a leading provider of full-scale telecommunications services to the corporate and public sectors. The company’s revenues from this area have jumped by as much as 30pc in the past 12 months and the hope is to double revenues, from the new unit.
The majority (44pc) of scams related to pc phishing, where a consumer is contacted by a scammer. The scammer claims to be from a well-known technology company, advising the consumer that they have identified a problem with their computer.The scammer then tries to gain access to the consumer’s computer to install malicious software that would capture sensitive data, such as online banking details or they may request the consumer’s credit card details in order to fix the non-existent problem. Other types of scams that have been reported to the NCA’s helpline include unsolicited home repair and fake lottery scams.
Vodafone Ireland enterprise director Anne O’Leary said: “Companies want straightforward management of their day-to-day communications needs from one single provider.Complete Telecom is a great fit for us, bringing the scale we need to offer bespoke fixed and mobile converged solutions, while also providing specialist tools to support customers in managing their data traffic.” Complete - which is a wholly-owned Irish company based in Blanchardstown - will remain trading under its own name for the foreseeable future before transferring to Vodafone’s Enterprise Customer Solutions unit at a later date.
JJB Ireland goes into liquidation Kieran Wallace of KPMG was appointed as Provisional Liquidator to the Irish business division of JJB Sports,the British sports goods retailer which went into administration in the UK beforehand.The Irish business division of JJB Sports comprises of four retail stores and two gyms based in Dundalk, Limerick, Blanchardstown and Liffey Valley. The business employs 102 people. The retail stores and gyms will, in the meantime, remain open on a ‘business as usual’ basis. The Provisional Liquidator has now moved to sell the business and assets of JJB Sports in Ireland as a going concern, it said.

It is sometimes harder to recognise a scammer if you are dealing with them over the phone or if they use an e-mail to contact you. "We would always urge consumers to be vigilant and never give any personal details,such as their PIN number to a caller, even if they claim to be calling from your bank and appear helpful. Reputable organisations will never contact you and ask you to verify personal details such as your PIN over the phone. "Scammers target those who are most vulnerable, revisiting consumers who have been scammed before. Many of us have a parent,friend or neighbour who would benefit from a gentle reminder about the types of scams out there and how they might be targeted. The NCA’s website, nca.ie, has information to help consumers protect themselves, and others, against scammers.” Ms O'Leary added: “Phone scams are particularly common as scammers can easily get access to your phone number through an online phonebook from anywhere in the world, if your number is listed, or through luck by using randomly-dialed numbers. “If you are unsure as to whether the person contacting you is genuine, tell the caller you will hang up and call them back. Official numbers are always available from a phone book or from letters you have received from providers that you deal with.”

She has been facilitating creative writing in Adult Education since the 1980’s. She is currently putting together an anthology of the children’s poetry under the title ‘Happy as Butter’. As part of AltEnts Arts Organisation’s 2012 Children’s Arts Festival, Eileen acted as Poetry Facilitator to five primary schools throughout Tallaght and Clondalkin.This is part 2.
In a marked change from his previous elaborate escapist works, David Mitchell returns to a dreary English early ’80s childhood. It was the cover design of this book that first drew my eye, as the name David Mitchell didn’t immediately ring any bells with me.Once I picked it up however, in smaller writing under his name it declared “Author of the Man Booker-shortlisted Cloud Atlas”. I was sold! I read Cloud Atlas a few years ago and it was one of those books that really grabbed my imagination and made me want to share the experience with others. As soon as I was finished with it I brought it home and insisted that my mother read it too. She also enjoyed it immensely. Black Swan Green is an entirely different animal to Cloud Atlas,which for the first half of the book, disappointed me.By the time I got to the end, I had been convinced that its differences did not make it any less of an entrancing read. Black Swan Green is set in a damp, depressing quinetessentially English place and Mitchell himself has expressed surprise at the level of international interest in such a provincial story.
“It’s just a kind of grey ‘80s Nowheresville...Perhaps everyone is from nowehere, though.Maybe that’s it.And if you do portray nowhere in its genuine lack of frill and lack of glory, then people respond to it. Whichever particular nowhere they’re from, they recognise mine,” he ha said. As someone who grew up in a boring rural area in the ‘80s, I think I recognised his nowhere and was able to relate to it too. The central character Jason Taylor,is a boy with a crippling stammer and hidden poetic ambitions and both its setting and era directly correspond with the author’s teenage years. Mitchell is actually a patron of the British Stammering Association. Mitchell was inspired to use Jason as his narrator for the novel back in 2003,when he supplied Granta with a short story entitled The January Man. It not only featured a fully-formed Jason, it also sketched out the beginnings of what became Black Swan Green itself.
Mitchell fell in love with the voice.“I’ve concocted this theory of accidental poetry: that 13-year-olds can accidentally create wholly fresh similes and metaphors because they don’t know the rules you need to make stale ones,” he said. The 13 chapters, each representing one month – from January 1982 through January 1983 – each a short story in its own right, create an exquisitely observed world. Jason has to deal with bullies, simmering family discord, the Falklands War,a threatened gypsy invasion and those mysterious entities known as girls. Bulbs Early October is a good time to plant spring flowering bulbs so they will establish roots before the first hard frost.When buying bulbs,look at the size of them,the bigger-size bulbs will produce bigger flowers. Look for firm bulbs with even colour and no signs of disease. Plant Tulips and Daffodils in groups of at least 10 or more. Plant small bulbs in groups of 20 or more. Bulbs planted of one variety and colour in mass,will give a great visual effect. Plant Snowdrops, Chionodoxas, Crocuses, Scillas and other small bulbs as early as possible. How deep should you plant bulbs? The basic rule of thumb is the hole should be at least 3 times as deep as the width of the bulb, however, rather than carefully measuring the diameter of each bulb,there are easier ways to figure out how deep to plant bulbs: If the bulb is big (eg.Tulip, Daffodil, Hyacinth), dig the hole about 6 - 8" (15 - 20 cm) deep; if the bulb is small (Crocus, Snowdrop,Scilla,Dwarf Iris,Muscari,Bluebell),dig the hole about 4 - 5" (10 - 12 cm) deep. Trees Place grease bands around tree trunks to prevent winter moths from climbing trees and laying eggs.Finish planting container-grown trees and shrubs, check ties on young trees, and loosen any that look too tight. Discard apples and worm-eaten fruits that are lying under fruit trees.Dispose of these in your bin, not your compost bin, this will help get rid of insects and diseases next year.All trees and shrubs should get plenty of water before the ground freezes. When deciding on new trees or shrubs to plant around
your home, remember to select varieties that will fit the location when they are at their mature height. This will greatly reduce pruning and other maintenance in the future. How to Force bulbs to bloom indoors Hyacinth, Tulips and Daffodils, can be forced to bloom indoors in December, but they will have to have several weeks in a cold, dark place like in a refrigerator for them to make a success of it.The cold dark conditions will mimic the winter season, which is the time that these flowers spend in growing roots and forming their flowers.The best containers for forcing bulbs are azalea pots or bulb pans. The pots should be filled from one-half to three-quarters full with potting compost and gently press the bulbs into the mix with the wide base down, allowing the necks to remain exposed. Barely cover the bulbs with additional potting compost and water gently until the soil is thoroughly moistened.Add a little more mix if subsidence has exposed the bulbs. Water well and then put the container in the refrigerator.
Root growth will take from eight to 12 weeks. The temperature should remain below 48° F. but above freezing.Total darkness is best, but if you are chilling the bulbs in the refrigerator don’t worry about the light coming on when you open the door. After that, put the container in a sunny window sill indoors. Hyacinths may only need seven weeks of chilling and begin to flower in as little as a week or so after moving to warmth. Remember to check for water weekly. Autumn is the ideal time to plant bare-root gooseberry bushes for a super crop next summer.If you didn’t cut your currant bushes back in the summer,prune out up to a third of the oldest wood on your currant bushes to encourage new growth. Do not prune Azaleas, Rhododendrons and other spring flowering shrubs because they have already set their buds for next year’s blooms.If you feel these shrubs do need to be pruned,however,you can prune them now,but you will sacrifice next Spring’s flowers.
Exercise And Children So let’s start with the truth, kids are not very active. They are fatter, more sedentary, and more unhealthy than the previous generation of kids. This isn’t me going on about the good old days when I walked uphill backward and barefoot in freezing snow to school while the blazing hot sun paradoxically burned overhead with me having to stop along the way to haul hay bales - all while doing maths without calculators. These are incontrovertible facts, confirmed via empirical evidence and by counting the number of kids you see with noses buried in iPads. The evidence is pretty clear that active kids and teens become active adults, while sedentary kids and teens become sedentary adults.Thus the next generation of adults is going to be more sedentary than the current group unless we do something about it. Notice that I said nothing about the government stepping in.They can make recommendations (the same ones they’ve been making for decades to little effect), but it comes down to you.Kids love to move.They are born with the desire and innate drive to move throughout the world, climbing and lifting and throwing things.Most kids are brimming with kinetic energy and will engage in intense activity, given the chance. Okay, now that’s out of the way let’s tackle one common misconception... Does lifting weights stunt growth? Everyone’s heard that kids who lift weights will suffer stunted growth. The official recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics is that children not be allowed to strength train, with the justification being it would damage growth plates and retard bone growth (and thus height). No research has ever shown that weight training actually stunts growth in youth. In fact, just like adults who lift, kids who lift enjoy stronger bones (which extends into adulthood), increased lean mass, improved insulin sensitivity,and overall better health.Growth plate injuries can occur in any sport,not just weight training (and even there, it’s not as heavily represented).

It basically boils down to this: get kids moving and balancing and playing early, get them strong, mobile, and agile, and you’ll improve their ability to handle their own body in a dangerous world, thus reducing the chance that any serious injury will occur. Just like you never forget how to ride a bike or swim once you’ve learned it as a child, a kid who is active from the start will never lose that ability - or desire to move as an adult.

Chupasart Gym has been running since 2006 teaching Muay Thai, a system of fighting that originates from Thailand and comprises punches, kicks, knees and elbows. The club have have had many homes in the last 6 years but have settled in Ballymount Industrial Estate D12 in their full time premises. The gym is over 4000sq ft., equipped with a boxing ring punch bags,focus mitts,kick pads, skipping ropes and everything needed for fighter strength and conditioning. Head coach Paddy Clint told InTallaght Magazine the club is very proud of its success in helping members get to the very top of the sport. “Over the past few years, Chupasart has developed a scorching hot stable of amateur & professional fighters, many of which have gone on to win titles both at home and overseas.
“Kickboxing classes in fitness gyms are just an aerobic exercise – no proper techniques are taught.At Chupasart you will learn authentic Thai Kickboxing techniques that can equip you to defend yourself,as well as improve your general level of fitness and help you lose weight. Our instructors have many years of authentic Muay Thai training,” said Paddy. Muay Thai has changed across the years. It has evolved from a battlefield close quarters killing ground technique based on a fighting tradition passed on from generation to generation up to the present time. But despite the changes of history, Paddy reckons Muay Thai has lost none of its exotic appeal and even mystique. “Muay Thai is still the fighting art to beat. The fighting art that defeats all challenges from Kung Fu, Karate, Taekwando and the latest kickboxing fashions.They have all come to Thailand, not just once but many times and from many places to test themselves,” he said. New students are welcome with all levels of fitness and no additional pre-training preparation is needed. Contrary to common believe you don't have to be a fighter to train in the gym, 95% of adults training are only doing so purely for fitness. Classes consist of a warm-up, shadowboxing, partner drills, pad work and circuits. For beginners the first few classes will be spent with an instructor learning the basics of Thai Boxing and once you’ve attained a certain level of skill you’ll be able to participate with the rest of the class. “The gym caters for everyone from 9 to 90, whether you just want to get in shape, blow off some steam on the
pads or train to be a fighter, you are always welcome in the gym. We have the skill and experience to train you to compete at regional, national or international level if you choose,” said Paddy.

7 Up For Laws As Rovers Destroy Dundalk In Rout Shamrock Rovers earned their largest ever league win at Tallaght Stadium at the end of September with the 7-0 win over Dundalk. The win brought a dramatic month for Rovers to a close. The month began with a win in the Leinster Senior Cup Final, followed by a draw and four consecutive defeats during which time Stephen Kenny vacated his role as Rovers manager.The month concluded with a new manager in place and the first home league win since May. Brian Laws is the new man in charge at Shamrock Rovers until the end of the season. He brings extensive experience from his professional career in England with him to Tallaght having played and managed in all four divisions in English football including managing Burnley in the English Premier League. His first game in charge was the EA Sports Cup final at Tallaght Stadium and it didn’t go as the new man would have wanted. Rovers were second best to Drogheda United who ran out 3-1 winners. The only highpoint from the game from a Rovers point of view was Killian Brennan’s fine free kick that found the top corner of the Drogheda net. However by that stage Rovers were already 2-0 down after some sloppy defending. “Losing in the cup final was very disappointing,” said Laws after the game,“especially to lose in the manner which we did. We gifted them two goals, and after that we always had an uphill battle.” The defeat meant Rovers had lost three consecutive games in three different competitions under three different managers.

COLIN HAWKINS The Big Man At the Back Brings A Wealth Of Experience To The Hoops Colin Hawkins joined Shamrock Rovers at the start of the 2012 season. Former Rovers manager Stephen Kenny brought the Galway man to Tallaght with a view to helping with coaching,working alongside Kenny and Stephen Glass. Hawkins was also looking to contribute on the pitch as well as on the training ground,however,and in the second half of the season he has done just that. Rovers have struggled with defensive injuries most of the season with Graham Gartland, Ken Oman and Craig Sives, all at different stages, being unavailable. Not that Hawkins himself hasn’t had injury worries. He left the Brandywell in an ambulance after collapsing at the end of the hard fought 1-0 win against Derry City. Thankfully the injury wasn’t as bad as feared and he was discharged later that night. At 34 years old, Hawkins has great experience having played in England with Coventry City, Doncaster Rovers and Brighton as well as winning league titles in Ireland with Pat’s, Bohs and Shels. His aim this season was to add another winner’s medal from a major competition and to be involved in a good run in Europe but it wasn’t to be. Hawkins was very honest in his assessment of how disappointed he was with the embarrassing early exit to Ekranas in Europe. “It was a disgusting, horrible feeling and everyone was hurting. It wasn’t good enough.”
There was little time to dwell on the League Cup final defeat for Laws’ men as three days later they faced Saint Patrick’s Athletic in Inchicore.The Hoops found themselves 2-0 down again in the first half but this time after just eight minutes. Pat’s won an early penalty,which they converted, after a shot struck Colin Hawkins’ hand from close range. Hawkins must have felt it wasn’t his night as he then deflected a Jake Carroll shot into his own net. Rovers had lost 5-1 in the same venue earlier in the season and so showed great determination in not panicking at this point. The game had been in doubt earlier in the day due to over 24 hours of rain in Dublin and at half time Rovers fans may have wished the game hadn’t gone ahead. However it was a much-improved performance by the Hoops in the second half especially from that seen in the EA Sports Cup final. Gary McCabe pulled a goal back with 12 minutes left in the game cutting in from the left and unleashing an unstoppable shot that flew by former Rovers ‘keeper Barry Murphy in the St Pat’s goal. Rovers piled on the pressure in the final minutes,even sending Oscar Jannson up from the Rovers goal for a corner at the end, but ultimately it was to be the Saints’ night. Three days later the Shamrock Rovers fans were celebrating their ‘heaven seven team’ after their 7-0 demolition of Dundalk. 3-0 up at half time thanks to goals from Ronan Finn, Ken Oman and Ciarán Kilduff, the Hoops heaped on the agony for Dundalk in the second half. Gary McCabe got a brace of penalties and Gary Twigg got two more goals to bring his goal tally to 18 league goals for the season. Dundalk will be thankful they don’t have to come to Tallaght Stadium again this year having conceded 13 goals in their two visits.
