Hi everyone, Welcome to the late October edition of InTallaght Magazine. It's a sad one for me personally as I am saying goodbye to InTallaght and the team here after 14 wonderful months at Genesis Media. My move has been brought about due to personal circumstances but I would like to thank you all for your fantastic and consistent support of the magazine and what we have been doing thus far.

PUBLISHER InTallaght is published by Genesis Media Concepts Ltd. ADDRESS Unit 6, Oxford Lane, Ranelagh, Dublin 6, Ireland TELEPHONE 01 412 6625 EMAIL admin@genesismedia.ie WEBSITE www.genesismedia.ie INTALLAGHT WEBSITE www.intallaght.ie REGISTERED IN IRELAND 484099 VAT NUMBER IE 9748538W ISSN 2009-4574

I came to InTallaght in August 2011 and was attracted to the job because I admired the young publication which set about making a name for itself in the area despite the harsh economic climate. InTallaght was and always has been a positive magazine highlighting the great things going on in our community and it has been my pleasure for the past 14 months to expand on this by bringing interviews with big names such as The Coronas, Laura Whitmore, Ryan Tubridy, Neil Delamere, Ardal O'Hanlon, Richard Dunne and Matt Cardle to you. The magazine has changed in many ways from it's design to it's extensive coverage of news and features as well as your much-loved columnists. It has gone from a monthly to a fornightly, has fantatstic associations with Shamrock Rovers and The Square Shopping Centre and is about to launch on iPad.

________________________

It is now available from over 100 outlets from Citywest, through Tallaght and down to Rathfarnham and is known by everyone in the area and beyond. For a publication which is just 19 months old it boasts remarkable progress and behind that progress is a remarkable team - one I have had the pleasure of working with and whom I leave you in the capable hands of.

InTallaght will continue to thrive and reach new heights and achieve even more of its goals and I for one look forward to watching its continued success.

St Judes GAA club in Templogue invite all local cyclists to get involved in their giant fundraiser this Sunday. The club, together with Horkans SuperValu in Templeogue, have organised a 50km cycle round Dublin to help raise much needed funds for the club. Over 200 cyclists will take off from the Templeogue clubhouse on Wellington Lane, travel down Stanaway Road, over to the Phoenix Park before returning to the club. Brain Woods,Chairman of St Judes, explained to InTallaght Magazine the importance of Sundays event for the running of the club. “St Judes is a club that supports over 60 teams every year across 4 sporting codes namely football, hurling, camogie and ladies football. Each year there are huge costs associated with running a club of our size. “This initiative is a great way of getting our members and local parish on to a bike for a good cause. Fortunately we also receive an incredible amount of support from our sponsors such as Horkans SuperValu who have been hugely supportive of Judes throughout the years.” Darragh Horkan, manager of Horkans Supervalu, told InTallaght they are delighted to be supporting the event.

Tallaght Athletic Club runner Sean Connolly made a record breaking return to road racing at the Tallaght five mile earlier this month.

Sean won’t be competing in this years Marathon as he will be taking a rest before he continues working on qualifying for the World Championships in Moscow in 2013.

The Kilnamanagh man won the race with a new course record time of 24 mins 21 secs. Even though he now lives in the North of England, where he works as a teacher, and trains with his local club over there, Sean remains a staunch member of Tallaght AC.

This years Dublin City Marathon, which will be the 33rd, takes place on Monday October 29, and will be the biggest one yet.

Last year he was the first Irishman home in the Dublin City Marathon with a finishing time of 2:18:52, placing him just outside the Olympic Qualifying time. It was enough however to make him the new Irish National Champion.

In preparation for his World Championship bid Sean typically runs 115-120 miles per week doing marathon specific training blocks. He trains twice a day, most days apart from Sunday, which usually involves doing one run of 22-28 miles at a steady pace. Sean does 2-3 key "race pace" training runs every week. These key sessions are done over different terrains, i.e. track and hills and he has also been busy with light gym work such as core and strength training to help keep the injuries at bay.

Since 2008, when 11,700 people entered, the numbers have steadily increased. This year 14,350 runners are registered to take part, up 300 from last year. For more information on this years Dublin City Marathon please log on to www.dublinmarathon.ieor www.facebook.com/dublinmarathon

“Cycling is a great sport and something people of all ages can take part in. SuperValu has a long and distinguished history of being a part of the local community. Through our local and national sponsorship of the GAA we were only delighted to get on board and help sponsor such a great initiative for St Judes.” Each cyclist taking part must fundraise €100 to participate and the event is open to cyclists of all levels. If you are interested in taking part in the race please contact St Judes on 01 4905255. For more information please visit www.stjudesgaa.ie or www.facebook.com/stjudesgaaclub

South Dublin County Council is inviting everyone to celebrate Halloween by coming along to an event involving local children. Known as“The Haunted”the celebrations will involve over 200 young people from Tallaght and Clondalkin displaying the art pieces they have created on Halloween night. There will be a parade in Tallaght and a pageant in North Clondalkin with celebration of music, dance and games at both events. The Mayor Cathal King visited Dominic’s Community Centre and took part in a Haunted workshop.“I am delighted to take part in preparing for“The Haunted” – I am looking forward to seeing all of these wonderful pieces in the parade. “Halloween is a special time of the year – the Haunted is a learning opportunity and a celebration. As Mayor of South Dublin County I want everyone to have a safe and happy Halloween – don’t provide material for bonfires, think of others and come out and see these artists display their scary artistic pieces.“ Free access to the Civic Amenity in Ballymount on Saturday 27th October will also be available to residents of South Dublin County on production of the Halloween postcard which will be distributed to all households in early October. “The Haunted” celebrations will take place in South Dublin County on October 31st between 5-7pm in Tallaght and North Clondalkin and will provide a fun filled spectacle for families in a safe environment. To reduce the amount of material available for bonfires, the Council in conjunction with CCRI in the lead up to Halloween are encouraging households to recycle WEEE (Waste Electronic and Electrical) materials - that’s anything with a battery or a plug, in a safe and legal way. If you would like to organise a collection for your area, contact Una at unaccri@ eircom.net or on 01 4578321.There will also be a free WEEE collection day provided by WEEE Ireland on 27th October at Powercity Fonthill 10am -4pm.

Shamrock Rovers Women's team have recently embarked on their second season in the Bus Eireann Women’s National League. Hopes are high for a much-improved League position after their inaugural first season, although they did only narrowly lose the League Cup (1-0) to League Champions Peamount Utd. This season the team has played three games, away to Cork Women, home to Raheny Utd and most recently away to Wexford Youths where they picked up their first point after a 1-1 draw thanks to a goal from Rachael Jenkins. Many changes were made over the summer, mainly with the capturing of Grainne Keirns as the new Head Coach. Grainne has played for Arsenal Ladies, Leeds Utd, and Charlton Athletic and captained the Ireland team while collecting over 30 caps at senior level. She brings a wealth of experience to a very young squad. Although the Team has attracted six girls from Tallaght there is also a two girls who travel long distances every week to play, Grainne Walsh from Tullamore and Bethany Houldsworth from Cavan and both are only 17 years of age. The local girls on the Team are Carol Conlon (Captain), Joanne Ennis, Zara Dillion, Jessica Dillion, Aoife Moloney and Leanne Hawkeswood. Even the Physiotherapist comes from Tallaght!! Manager John Walsh is looking forward to the rest of the season and he hopes local football fans will come along and support the Shamrock Rovers Women’s team in their quest for glory. “There is a bright season ahead for the team this season, come out and watch them play their game as they go in search of their first home victory in Tallaght Stadium,” he said. Next Home Fixture: Shamrock Rovers Women vs DLR Waves Saturday 3rd November 2012 Kick Off 2pm,Tallaght Stadium.

St Mark’s Community School in Tallaght has become the first school in Ireland committed to the use of Restorative Practice. The process began in 2010 and staff members, students and parents have all been involved in training in Restorative Practice (RP). RP is an internationally recognised approach to manage conflict and tensions in communities and organisations by repairing harm and building relationships. Launching the development this week South Dublin County Council Mayor Cathal King raised a specially made ‘Restorative Practice flag’outside the school for all to see. The launch also included a viewing of a film made by St Marks pupils in which the students demonstrated how Restorative Practice has changed how they, teachers and parents resolve issues in the school and at home. One student stated how the last two years have been ‘the best in her life due to the use of restorative practice’. Mayor King said it was a great honour for St. Mark’s

Community School to become the first‘School Community Committed to Restorative Practice’in the country. “This project provides a great example to the 800 pupils here at St. Mark’s of the action people working together can take to improve their lives. The School Principal, teachers, pupils and parents are all to be congratulated for their energy and commitment.” Speaking at the launch the Minister of State for Public Service Reform and Office of Public Works Brian Hayes said:“I am delighted to be present in St. Mark’s for the launch. I congratulate all involved. It’s a great day and a proud achievement for the school." The initiative was delivered through a partnership between St. Mark’s and the Childhood Development Initiative (CDI). CDI provided training and support while staff, pupils and parents developed and implemented the programme. Eithne Coyne, the Principal of St Marks, said that she had been overwhelmed by the response of the school community, that Restorative Practice has been embraced so enthusiastically and that there is a real, deep commitment to making it work. “The Restorative Practice Programme is going from strength to strength, with more and more people and organisations seeking to take on the training as word of how useful it is spreads. “The aim of Restorative Practices (RP) is to develop the community to prevent and manage conflict or tensions by building relationships and repairing harm.“People from a whole range of organisations and sectors have undertaken the training that CDI has been providing. The training is for all statutory, voluntary, and community organisations working with children and families in

Tallaght West and for residents and young people who live in the areas of Jobstown, Fettercairn, Killinarden and Brookfield” “The school has a proud tradition of being a caring community, and the strategies and explicit practices of RP support us in the day-to-day work of realising the core values and principles enshrined in our School Vision,” said Eithne. CDI CEO Marian Quinn highlighted the pioneering spirit of the school. “RP is about early intervention and prevention work that strengthens relationships and provides people with skills for the constructive resolution of conflict. “There is now a model in place at St. Mark’s that can be adopted in other schools across the country and the school is to be congratulated for being the first to achieve this.” Since CDI began providing Restorative Practice training in Tallaght West in 2009, 700 people have been trained in the approach with 200 going on to do refresher or more advanced courses, including 100 young people. CDI has worked in the community in Tallaght West and since 2007 and in that time more than 2,000 children have participated in its programmes. The organisation is part of a major early years research and evaluation project taking place across Tallaght West, Ballymun and Darndale which is co-funded by Atlantic Philanthropies and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. Additional funding has been given to CDI by the Department of Children to continue much of its work in Tallaght for another year – and full details of this will be announced shortly.

After the heartbreak of injury forced him out of Euro 2012 Tallaght native Keith Fahey came back into the Ireland team for the home game with Germany. InTallaght Magazine caught up with him in the squad headquarters in Malahide prior to the match. Even though the game itself was a disaster it was great to see Keith back to full fitness and able to take his place on the team.

Was it hard to get over missing the Euros?

It had been a hard few months even before the Euros. I’d been suffering with groin injuries from around February/March. It was a big disappointment to miss out but I got on with it.

Did you watch much of the Euros?

Yes I did.The first game was hard to watch, you want to be involved and you want the lads to do well. I watched the Euros in Thailand. It was great to get away from it all but it was also very disappointing for the lads.

Could you tell us about the road back to full fitness?

You’re back playing centre midfield for Birmingham, is this your favourite position?

Last season was the first time since I went away that I got to play regularly in centre midfield. It’s my favourite position, my best position.Hopefully my left wing days are behind me, thank God! I can fill in on the left but I don’t want to be claiming to be a winger.

How are Birmingham doing so far?

We’ve been doing better away from home, we’ve been struggling in front of our own fans, whether it’s down to nerves or what, I don’t know why that is.

So how’s your fitness now?

Have you noticed a different vibe in the squad this week after the retirements?

Were you surprised to get straight back into the Ireland squad?

Is there still much of a hangover from the Euros?

Well I went back to pre-season aiming to get ready. During the summer I did no running for 6 weeks and the rehab went great so hopefully it's all behind me now and I just want to stay on top of it.

Seven months…Ever since I finished the tour really but even when I was on the tour I started writing and a bit before the tour so about seven months or a bit more.

No I wasn’t surprised, I was delighted when I heard and I’m delighted to be back.

No not really but I only arrived yesterday and there’s still a few of the lads to arrive yet. Whenever senior players step down then other senior players step up. It’s a transition period but there’s definitely quality in the squad.

I don’t think so. I wasn’t there so I don’t want to be asking the lads too much about it but I haven’t noticed anything.

I know you’re still a big St Pats fan, you must be delighted they’re in the Cup Final?

It's great to see them in the final. The squad has completely changed since my time at Pat's,Sean O'Connor is back there now.I played with Sean, though he moved away from Pat's and went back again. I’d also know Christy the physio, but most of the lads from my time are gone.

What about the 51-year gap since Pat's last lifted the FAI Cup?

Everyone’s going to talk about the time frame but if for me, if I was involved, I wouldn’t want to talk about it! But they have to win it this year, it has to be their year. They should do it, we had a great chance to do it in 2003 and that didn't work out, hopefully 2012 is the year for Pat's.

Are you planning on going to the final?

I had a look at the dates and I'd love to make it over for the Cup final but I have a game with Birmingham on the Saturday and on the Tuesday so it's not ideal, I might make a day trip over on the Sunday if I can.

Of course you appeared onTV over the summer banging on a drum with the Shed End Invincibles during a Pats V Shelbourne match?!

Yeah, I probably don’t get to watch them as often as I’d like I was in the directors box and at half time I went to say hello to a few people I hadn’t seen in a while. It was great to get down there!

Would you like to play for St Pats again?

Yes I look forward to having a spell there before the end of my career. Hopefully it’s a few years away but I’d like to come back and play for Pats. Only Pats!

Your career has blossomed into a media one – how did that come about?

I never thought about doing TV. I love being on stage but I never set out to have a career in it – most people who do it have journalistic experience. I was asked to do a fashion slot, however, by Debbie O’Donnell on TV3 once and it went from there. I never had a dream to do it but now I love the drama and the attention – I spend my days making friends and giving hugs!

Lisa Fitzpatrick is one of Ireland’s hottest stylists with a fashion CV that boasts real experience from buying for a wholesale company to running her own store on to media work and consultancy. It’s the knowledge she has built up over her career coupled with the fact that she has, like most women, battled with her weight in the past that makes her someone people can believe in when it comes to fashion style and advice. A down-to-earth attitude, her belief that fashion is a feeling and her contempt for women’s shapes being compared to fruit also makes Lisa a very likeable person. Editor, Emer Mulvaney caught up with Lisa who spoke past fashion faux pas,’ having a slight case of OCD and life in the limelight.

You’ve been outspoken in the past about women’s shapes being described as pears and apples – you disagree.

I think the whole idea is horrendous. It’s not something I’d like to be called because I have big thighs and a big bum. I’m not a pear. You don’t compare yourself to a fruit. You simply work the good and hide the bad.The advantage for me is that I have been every shape and size. I was a 16/18 at one point. That’s why I know what I am talking about when giving women of all sizes as my advice.

So what is your opinion on the little black dress – is it really a necessity in every woman’s wardrobe?

The little black dress is not for everyone. Some people need colour, not everyone needs an LBD. I generally like to wear a blazer with a big scarf and jeans for casual wear. I don’t believe you need a capsule wardrobe you just have to dress for yourself. For example if your jeans are too tight and you’re hanging out over them go for high-rise or go up a size! My weight fluctuates but I don’t put huge pressure on myself, I don’t obsess about it. I think we should all dress how we want.Irish people have a tendancy to get a compliment and say ‘Penneys for €5” rather than thanks – we have to learn to say thanks and feel good about ourselves.

When did you first start How long does it take you to get showing an interest in fashion? ready in the morning? When I had a part time job in a clothes shop in Rathmines when I was 17. I was a part-time sales assistant and I went full time in the Summer.I got involved in window dressing and I built up a strong and loyal customer base. That was the whole starting point.I went on to wholesale manufacturing and I took an interest in all areas of fashion. I always loved the idea of personal shopping and it’s something I still do in Fran and Jane in Brown Thomas on a Saturday.

I’m a dab had at it! I will know in my head what I am wearing so say, for example, I am on Ireland AM I will have to be in at 6.45am. I need 15 minutes to get there and 45 minutes to get ready, shower etc and include 15 minutes for my make up and 10 minutes for my hair. I wear clip ins in my hair or if not I tie it up.

What is style to you?

Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you?

Everybody has a style. Just because someone has their own individual look doesn’t mean they are not stylish. People have to be allowed to express themselves. It doesn’t mean there won’t be disasters. I made many a dodgy mistake in my time, I went through a blingtastic stage when I looked like a Vegas showgirl but that’s how you grow into your own style. You won’t see me wearing mini skirts at 40 that’s for sure.

I love IT.Anything Apple, anything gadgety.I haven’t got the iPhone 5 yet though.I looked at it from a practical sense and it doesn’t offer me much more than what I have so I won’t be trading in any time soon. It’s the same with clothes, if I have something as good I won’t waste money buying something else.

You presented SOS Save Our Shops where you helped struggling businesses – you had to be very honest do you think people were surprised by you?

I definitely have a bit of OCD and if budgets had allowed I would have done complete transformations. I’ll be honest I’m a bit of a Louis Walsh, I say what I feel and I don’t pussy foot around. I’m not looking for any more friends. If you like what I say good if not don’t ask for it [advice].

Will there be a new series of the show?

There’s no new series planned but I’d love to do one. I’d actually like to do a de-cluttering show where I go in and take people’s houses and wardrobes apart and throw everything unnecessary out! I’d like to sort out people’s lives, their kids, even their fridges!

You will be giving a talk at The Red Line Book Festival in Tallaght in November – what can people expect?

Yes I’m really excited about it after writing my own book.I’ll be giving a masterclass with style tips on how to dress and basic advice. I’m really looking forward to it.

Your book has been a huge success, well done.

Thank you.I really enjoyed doing it.Viewers and listeners of the Derek Mooney show brought it about. It didn’t take a whole lot of research it’s all about what people are really looking for. There’s a lot of support here, lovely little stories and everyone got something from it.

So what’s next for you?

I don’t know. One door closes and another one always opens so I’m excited about what’s around the corner. At the end of the day when someone asks me to be involved in their business I am genuinely grateful and will give it my all – I’m like that when it comes to anything I set my mind to. If you would like to contact Lisa for advice email her at lisa@fitzpatrickstyle.com or follow her on twitter @LBfitz3

MADNESS the latest single from Muse is a strange mix of Queen meets George Michael that surprisingly works really well! Matt Bellamy’s vocals would give Freddy a run for his money here and they even manage a Brian May-style guitar solo in the middle.

Madness isn't like anything Muse have done before, and that's why it's so fascinating. Having had a good few listens to it on the radio over the past few weeks it’s really grown on me. The lyrics are so simple it's catchy, it's surprising, and once again proves how Muse can change direction almost at will.

Dublin Band Junah are an up and coming five piece who released their first EP On Waves a few months ago. Previous to this I hadn’t heard about the band. It seems however they were flying away under my radar after getting plenty of attention from the nation’s media. Airplay on some of the radio stations was backed up with mentions in the Irish music press and because of this I couldn’t wait to hear what they were like.

However, throughout all the different experiments with sound down the years there has always been that one aspect of a Muse song that sounds like Muse, and when you listen to it, you still know its them. This is not the case with Madness though. There’s plenty of wobbly bass and electronica here with a very simplistic drumbeat that features throughout the entire tune, before it all builds up to the expected epicness as the song ends brilliantly.

start isn’t as sad and the band seem in a better mood as they let rip with plenty of percussion and swirling drumbeats. After this comes Sad Song and once again the band are back into melancholy territory as the singer looks back retrospectively at events from his life. As with the tracks that precede it, this tune builds up towards the end before fading out with some nice piano.

On Waves is a four track E.P. which the band have said is a foretaste of what a future album will sound like.

The final track on the EP is Walk Me into the Ground and it deals with mourning and loss. It’s also a song about reflection because the story teller in this song is a mother speaking to the family she seems to have left behind.

It starts off with Feel Safe, a tune that begins with a slow piano on its own playing a sad melody. This sets the mood, which is kind of dark and lonely, before the tune speeds up and gets less heavy. Once it gets going it’s an uplifting track and it finishes on a high.

All in all it’s a fine debut EP from the band. It’s mellow folk rock, played well with fine vocals delivering some heavy lyrics. If On Waves is an indication of what their debut album will be like then the signs are encouraging and I look forward to hearing more from this band.

The next tune is Burning in The Hallwaywhich also starts out slowly. However in contrast to the previous tune this

To listen to On Waves please go to: www.junah.com where you can download it for free.

I’d imagine this single is going to divide the hardcore fans but may also win over a few new people who’ve never listened to them much before. "I have finally seen the light," cries frontman Bellamy as the song builds up and I reckon a fair few music fans will too when they hear Madness.

Madness is the 2nd single to be released from the bands forthcoming 6th album 2nd Law.

Is it a tablet? Is it a phone? Or both? We really don’t know – but it has some of the best specs around and Samsung’s hoping the Galaxy Note will ship by the bucketload.

To look at the Note,it looks just like a larger version of the S2.The front is incredibly minimalist with only a Samsung logo and homescreen button visible to the eye.The front facing 2MP camera and light sensor are there but almost impossible to see on the black model. The left hand side holds only a volume rocker, the top houses the 3.5mm headphone jack and there’s a power/lock-unlock button on the right. The micro USB charging and syncing port can be located on the bottom.

It’s a phone/tablet hybrid that doesn’t really sit in any category but we look at it as a smartphone simply due to the fact it can make calls. Samsung, however, is definitely trying to create a new category of device with this 5.3-inch screened behemoth. It’s funny how mobile trends can change.Just a few years ago manufacturers were falling over themselves trying to outdo each other to provide the smallest handset in the world. Motorola got them pretty thin with the RAZR line and Samsung’s own D500 was titchy. Then something happened and big became cool.Yet, we don’t seem to mind any more. Just as well really, because the Galaxy Note is just that big. Falling somewhere between the tablet and phone goalposts,it’s not as enormous as pictures may imply but it is larger than your average smartphone. It’s fairly light considering how heavy it could have been. This is a trait we’ve come to expect in the Galaxy line with both the Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy S2 handsets also being light as a feather.

her handbag but it doesn’t feel like something that has been solely designed with the girls in mind.

The 8MP camera with LED flash is positioned in the centre of the rear portion in the same way it is on the S2 although, bizarrely, Samsung has, once again, chosen to have the actual glass covering of the lens protruding.

The nearest device we can think it compares to is the HTC Flyer though that’s been out a while now and is already being reduced in price. For some buyers it could very well be a choice between the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S2 and with the only real differences being size and the ‘S-Pen’, there’s not much in it.

The crowning glory of the Note is the screen: 5.3" of WXGA goodness (1280 x 800) and it is a belter.Samsung has always been renowned for its good screens with even the Galaxy S giving us that wow factor last year.

At the time of writing, you can pick the Note up sim-free for a shade under €599 which places it firmly at the top end of the spectrum and comparable with an unlocked iPhone 4S 32GB.

We were bowled over by the S2’s Super AMOLED Plus but the Note just blows that out of the water.285ppi is what it gives us and not only are colours vibrant and sharp but it looks easily as good as anything that Apple produces with a ‘retina’ label, even though it’s obviously a lot bigger.

You can of course pick one up on contract as well – The Samsung Galaxy Note is available from Vodafone - prices starting from €49 on bill pay. Terms and conditions apply. For more details visit www.vodafone.ie

Under the hood, you'll find a dualcore 1.4GHz processor powering this beast and either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage (which you can also expand by another 32GB with removable memory.) A 2,500mAh battery should give you plenty of juice but considering the size of the screen, which is always the biggest drainer, it may not go as far as one hopes. It’s difficult to see just who the Note is aimed at – mainly because it’s hard to give it a label and put firmly in the camp of being just a phone or just a tablet. Samsung claims it’s the kind of device a lady could carry around in

The eighth main title in the Tekken series is shaping up to be a blast. Last year in Japan the game was released in arcades and had fans of the series going crazy over it. Veterans of the series who had been around for a long time and played all the Tekkens really seemed to enjoy it,” says Katsuhiro Harada, Game Director of the Tekken Project. “And then on the other end of the spectrum there were the very new players who were good at memorising things and learning quickly and they seemed to really enjoy the game system as well.” New to the TTT2 game, which didn't apper in the first game, it will have a storyline. But as of yet the story has not been released. It's more of a “Dream Match”, giving fans of the series the chance to play as almost every character in the games series. The gameplay expands on the tag mechanics featured in the firstTekken Tag, allowing for extended tag combos and combined moves.New techniques include combined tag throws which, if timed properly, can be escaped from. Also characters who have been tagged out regain some health over time, also At certain points, an inactive character's life bar may flash, giving them a temporary boost in strength if they are tagged in. Finally, the Jaguar XF Sportbrake fills a large gap in the British firm’s range. The stylish wagon goes up against the brilliant Audi A6 Avant, BMW 5 Series Touring and Mercedes E-Class Estate, and brings some style and personality to the class. It’s targeted mainly at Europe, so only diesels are offered however four-wheel drive and hybrid versions are promised imminently. You'll pay around €3,000 more for the Sportbrake over a saloon but Jaguar expects as many as a quarter of all XFs will be bought as Sportbrakes. The Jaguar XF saloon is already a very handsome car being much more distinctive than its Audi, BMW and Mercedes rivals. Designers have done a great job integrating the extra bodywork of the tail into the shape. The wheelbase is the same as the saloon’s, but the roof has been lengthened.Head-turning features include the blacked-out B and C-pillars,which help make the car look longer and slimmer. The D-pillars also get a gloss black finish – a detail borrowed from the XJ flagship – creating the effect of a wraparound rear screen. Inside, the Sportbrake is the same as the saloon, with cool blue lighting and a clever rotary gear selector which rises up when the ignition is turned on. Unlike the saloon range, the XF Sportbrake will only be available with diesel engines. That means a choice of 163bhp or 190bhp 2.2-litre four-cylinder units, or a 240bhp 3.0-litre V6.That’s no bad thing, in fact, for Irish

buyers the diesels make the most sense. Even the entry-level 163bhp diesel is quite fast, doing 0-60mph in just under 10 seconds. The 190bhp version will be the pick, as it is much faster – 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds - and just as economical. Refinement is brilliant across the range, and the four-cylinder engines get the benefit of a slick new eight-speed automatic.Handling is agile and involving - it is expected that the XF Sportbrake will be just as much fun to drive as the saloon. The XF saloon received four stars in the Euro NCAP crash test – its Audi, BMW and Mercedes rivals have all scored a maximum five stars. However, with a multitude of driver, passenger and side airbags, electronic stability control and a bonnet that pops up in a pedestrian impact to cushion the collision are all standard. Options include blind-spot warning, tyre pressure monitors and a Parking Aid Pack, featuring front sensors and rear cameras, as well as adaptive cruise control. An official XF Sportbrake brochure created exclusively for iPad users is available to download at Apple’s App Store. This brochure allows you to explore the design, engineering and technology stories behind the 2013 XF Sportbrake, with video, high-quality imagery, interior and exterior colour and trim as well as detailed technical specifications. An online TV station in a partnership with the Institute of Technology Tallaght is continuing to gain viewers from all over the world. Even though it only began transmitting in late 2010, social enterprise start-up An Lár TV has established an audience in more than 120 countries and is approaching 140,000 viewers a month. It aims to provide community-based internet TV to Irish communities at home and abroad and its largest audiences are currently in North America. Available on computers, android and smart devices, An Lár TV is now investigating the emerging internet-ready TV market, and is available via media streaming devices such as Roku. Since inception, An Lár has grown from an original channel to six different channels focusing on different aspects of Irish culture and heritage. The main An Lár Channel features a range of programming including drama, sports, history, heritage and community programmes.By audience demand, additional channels have been added including a rock music, traditional music and arts channel. Operations Director Susanne Carpenter explained to InTallaght Magazine how the station is developing. “Our ethos is to work with communities around the country. Our contributor base is constantly growing, and contributors range in size from large national organisations to local heritage and community groups.

Apple rumoured to unveil iPad Mini this month Apple is expected to take the wraps off its highly anticipated mini iPad at an October 23 invitation-only event, reported tech blog AllThingsD recently, citing sources familiar with the company. The event would come before Microsoft Corp unveils its latest operating system, Windows 8, and its new Surface tablet on October 26.

“We strongly believe in promoting Irish talent, which has led to the development of the music and arts channels. “We also take feedback from our audiences globally, particularly niche audiences, which has led to the paranormalchannelwithfurthernichechannelsontheway.” An Lár TV’s marketing strategy is a high priority and due to this it established a research partnership with the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT). “Phase one of our social media strategy is in place. Establishing a relationship with a knowledge provider like ITT has been instrumental in laying out our future direction and has already identified priority actions which are being implemented,”said Susanne. The potential for the venture is significant, considering there are an estimated 70 million Irish people or people of Irish descent around the world. An Lár TV has been shortlisted for the Vodafone Start Up Awards 2012 in the Online/Digital Start Up of the Year and Social Enterprise Start Up of theYear categories, and has been selected by Eircom to feature in the Eircom Start Up Business Campaign. An Apple spokesman did not immediately respond for comment. Speculation has been swirling for months that Apple was planning a smaller, less expensive version of its popular iPad to take on cheaper competing devices.

An involved Jewish family memoir centred on 264 Japanese carvings deftly captures the great events of history. The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Family’s Century of Art and Loss, to give it its full title, is another of my mother’s recommendations from her book club. Edmund de Waal, an Englishman despite his distinctly Dutch surname, is a ceramicist whose work is widely shown in museums and galleries. At a dinner after presenting a paper on orientalism and Japanese pottery seent years ago,he found himself recounting an extraordinary story he had told only to his wife and close friends, about a collection of miniature ivory and wood sculptures he had inherited from his great uncle Iggie.

"So I keep on talking," he remembers, "and I realise that I've broken some kind of pact with myself – to mention it at all in public seemed to be crossing a boundary. And then when I got the reaction I got, I knew I faced a difficult question – in fact the question was put to me very directly by the art historians over dinner: 'What are you going to do with this story? Why are you telling it to us? Why haven't you written it down?'" De Waal describes The Hare With Amber Eyes as being "about loss and diaspora and about the survival of objects".He says it began with the netsuke – "small, tough explosions of exactitude" – but "eventually I realised it is actually about identity: what do you know about who you are? And what kind of stories do families tell about themselves?" The 264 Japanese wood and ivory carvings, none of them bigger than a matchbox are central to the narrative of the story. When he inherited the 'netsuke', they unlocked a story far larger and more dramatic than he could ever have imagined. From a burgeoning empire in Odessa to fin de siecle Paris,

from occupied Vienna to Tokyo, Edmund de Waal traces the netsuke's journey through generations of his remarkable family against the backdrop a tumultuous century. This book is a wonderful blend of history, biography with a sprinkling of the appreciation of art that only an artist or craftsperson can share. He brings this artist’s sensibility to his writing, with a meticulous attention to the detail of language, its rhythms and its evocative potential.I got lost in this book and didn’t want the history to come to an end. It’s a strange book but one I would recommend unreservedly. About The Author Edmund Arthur Lowndes de Waal OBE is a British ceramic artist, and author of The Hare with Amber Eyes. After reading English at Cambridge, Edmund spent a further year studying at the Mejiro Ceramics Studio in Tokyo. He lives and works in London.

I have naturally very dark hair but would love to go platinum blonde, what should I do about my dark eyebrows? Vanessa, Kilcoole

Hi Vanessa, there are a few ways to lighten your brows. You can use a facial bleach which many people do to lighten their brows or if you would rather use makeup to do this is possible also. To lighten the brows using makeup you will need four products, a small fan brush, fix plus spray, polished ivory chromacake and Studio finish concealer. This process is quite affective and it is quick and easy. First you need to spray the chromacake product with the fix plus spray, just so it is a little moist. Next take you fan brush and apply a little of the product on to the brush. Then using an upward stroke brush the product through your brows (try not to use too much chromacake). When using this method do it before you apply any of your makeup. For the finishing touches use your Studio finish concealer to highlight under you brow (this will create a clean and polished finished look)

I over plucked my eyebrows when I was younger and now I want to achieve the fuller more natural look from the runway. How do I go about it? Niamh, Firhouse

Hi Niamh, if you can stand it, book an appointment with a professional and leave your brows entirely alone for 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, you can use clear brow gel (Maybelline have a really good clear one) to give them some shape; combine this with an eyebrow pencil and or an eyeshadow to get that full but natural brow. If you have any questions about makeup application, AnJels Pro Makeup team is here to help! Simply email the team on makeup@intallaght.ie and check the next edition to see if your question has been answered by the experts!

Rake up leaves It’s a job we all hate, but the lawn or patio will look untidy, so it’s worth removing them and they can be added to your compost. Rejuvenating Your Lawn If you want a fantastic lawn, but don’t want the expense of buying turf, try creating it from seed. Grass seed is best sown from late summer to mid-autumn;there is less competition from weeds, and the soil is warm and damp from rain. Perfect for seeds to germinate. If you miss the opportunity to sow in Autumn, try in April, but only if you can give the new grass plenty of water. Do not attempt to sow in summer - it’s unlikely you’ll be able to give the lawn enough water to prevent it from shrivelling up and dying. Using seed has several advantages over turf. Apart from the cost, there are lots of different mixes available and seed is better for trickier areas, such as slopes and corners. To remove damaged areas of turf, simply lift worn areas of lawn either reseed or relay turf. The warm moist conditions at this time of the year mean that it will quickly re-establish complete scarifying, aerating, top dressing and apply autumn lawn feed before the end of the month.

October is also a good time to lay turf. Divide herbaceous perennials.Plant some back in the ground;you can pot-up some and give away to your friends in the Spring. Plant out spring bedding and biennials, such as wall-flowers, for Spring displays. Pots and hanging baskets can be planted with spring bedding, and grouped with bulbs, grasses, Cyclamen and Violas for a colourful display. Lift tender perennial bedding plants such as Pelargoniums, Fuchsias and Marguerites (Argyranthemum) before the first frost.Pot them up and store in a sheltered place, making sure that the compost does not dry out or become too wet. Ponds Thin out any dense patches of water plants in your pond and clean up any litter and leaves from the surface and the bottom.Thin out oxygenating plants. Do not forget to place a net over the pond to protect from falling leaves. Make sure that ponds are topped up with water,if you need to top up your pond check the PH and nitrogen levels of the water afterwards. Take cuttings of tender perennials and shrubs. Including Salvias, Penstemon, Lavender and Rosemary. Propagate Clematis, Honeysuckle and Wisteria plants by layering.

How to find out what type of soil you have There is an old saying ‘the answer lies in the soil’ and it’s true. Get to know your soil and you can add the right things to improve it, and grow the types of plants that will thrive in it.To find the pH of your soil you need a soil-testing kit, available at any garden centre. This will help you find out what kind of soil you’re gardening with. And with this small piece of information it will help you to find the pH of your soil and you'll know how to feed your soil and what plants you can grow. It pays to take three or four samples from the external edges of the garden as you may have more than one soil type, each favouring different plants and treatments. The test will show whether your samples are acidic (below 7), neutral (7) or alkaline (above 7) Most garden plants like soil that is slightly acidic at 6.5, but there’s still a good selection of plants for neutral and alkaline soils.

Do you want great looking abs? Do you want to rid yourself of that muffin top and be the envy of all your friends? I'm here to tell you that you can have BOTH! Introducing the D24FIT-ABS 1000, a revolutionary new core training device developed by top exercise scientists designed to give you jaw-dropping abs that are both SEXY and only takes 2 mins a day! For just three painless payments of €19.95, you too can... Sorry but everybody wants a strong, aesthetically pleasing midsection. The nonsense fitness vultures know this, which is why they go to such great lengths trying to sell you gadgets and exercise classes to supposedly help you achieve this universal goal. But you don't need to pick up the phone or make three easy payments of any amount. You just need to continue reading. What is my core: In simple terms it’s the Major muscles included are the pelvic floor muscles, transversus abdominis, multifidus, internal and external obliques, rectus abdominis, erector spinae (sacrospinalis) especially the longissimus thoracis, and the diaphragm. Minor core muscles include the latissimus dorsi, gluteus maximus, and trapezius. Now we have that out of the way, here are some benefits of core training; 1. It’s good for you! Core exercises train your deep abdominal muscles - the main one is called the transversus abdominis. It’s a very deep muscle that surrounds your entire waist, supporting all your abdominal structures including your lower back. 2. Core training is the missing piece of most exercise programs. Most people do abdominal exercises as part of their regular routines. And for some they may be doing more harm than good, the godfather of core development, Dr.Stuart McGill states; that repeated spinal flexion is detrimental to the intervertebral discs (sit ups) not good if you have a back problem!! 3. Lower back stabilization. A strong and healthy lower back requires a strong and healthy group of core muscles – the TVA, multifidus, erector spinae, longissimus thoracis, rectus abdominis, and internal and external obliques.A strong core provides weight-bearing support to the lower back, freeing your spinal vertebras, joints, and muscles to do what they were designed to do – move your body around in space. 4. Core training provides remarkable unexpected benefits, including improved balance and coordination and positional awareness – proprioception. Also improved flexibility is the natural result of improved lower back stabilization. Make Core training part of your routine and make sure you’re doing the CORE-rectly!

GLENANNE SPORTS Club starts its 27th season in St Mark’s Community School where Glenanne Park has become home to one of the most successful hockey clubs in recent decades. The Club’s origins date back to 1943 (formerly called Graftonians) and to Fortfield Road in Terenure where the club resided offering many sports to members. In 1970,the club was evicted from Fortfield Road to make way for a housing development. It was a severe blow, hockey was now the club’s only sport and Glenanne then led a nomadic existence, from 1970 to 1985 they used various grounds especially Tallaght Community School. In 1975 the women’s section was re-founded and this helped the resurgence of the club. The Ladies 1sts went from the bottom division to senior status in 10 years and created a great buzz in the 80′s winning all junior trophies available in one season including an all Ireland. The Men’s 1sts struggled to get back to senior ranks and did not do so until the end of 1984-85. In 89 the club did a deal with the Trustees of St Marks and the Dept of Education as the club leased a site from them, built Glenanne Park and gave the School a license to use the grounds during the day in term time.

Glenanne Park was officially opened by President Mary Robinson on 10 April 1991 just 21 years after the club had lost its original grounds. Recently the men’s section has been a golden era in the history of the club. From 51 to 83 the club didn’t win amajor trophy. When the men’s 1sts won the Railway Cup in 1983 the Irish Times headline ran“Glenanne Celebrate Rare Success”. Following this the Golden Generation forged their way to the forefront of Leinster and Irish hockey in the ‘Naughties,’A first Leinster League title in April 2000 was followed by the club’s one and only All-Ireland Championship/League win.Since then more league titles (2002, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2012) have followed as well as Irish Senior Cup’s (2007, 2010) and Leinster Senior Cups (2002, 2004, 2007, 2008) to join their breakthrough 1996 success. The first Senior trophy the men’s section ever won was the Neville Cup in 1985 and the club has collected more since then (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2007, 2009,2010).However,perhaps the men’s most impressive achievement came in Europe when they took home the 2008 European Club Challenge in Paris after an epic win over hosts Montrouge. That win launched them into European elite competition the Euro Hockey League in 2009, with their best finish coming in season 2010/2011 when the reached the last 16. Meanwhile, the Ladies havn’t been quiet!. Their most outstanding success came in 2008 when they won the Irish Junior Cup and also gained promotion to the Leinster Senior division. Since then they have consolidated with 7th place finishes. Last season saw the Ladies 2nds and 3rds win their divisions and the 3rds also won the Leinster 9/10 cup. This season Irish International Nikki Symmons has taken over coaching the Ladies. Glenanne SC has joined with the Irish Hockey Association and Tallaght Community School to develop the School/Club link for 2012/13.This includes 'Tricks 4 Sticks' the IHA’s flag-

ship schools development programme and support from Glenanne SC with donations of hockey sticks, goal posts and monthly coaches sessions by their senior men and women. Glenanne will also be sponsoring a Glenanne Inter Tallaght Schools Cup with St Mark's Community School and Tallaght Community School at the end of the school year.

Jeckle And Hyde Displays From Rovers There were two contrasting performances from Shamrock Rovers at the start of October. They started the month by beating Bray Wanderers in the Carlisle Grounds 3-1. However, the Hoops followed that with defeat to Derry in a game the Candystripes dominated in Tallaght Stadium. Coming into the match on the back of the 7-0 home win over Dundalk, Rovers kept the performance levels high and led 2-0 at the break with goals from Killian Brennan and Ken Oman. Brennan opened the scoring from a free kick as he struck the ball over the wall to score with the shot clipping the underside of the bar on the way in. It was his third of the season but he soon had to go off due to a calf injury which also ruled him out of the Derry game. Rovers, and McCabe in particular, caused Bray difficulties with balls into the box. Ken Oman had come close early in the game from a McCabe corner before the two combined again just after the half an hour mark to make it 2-0. McCabe’s in swinging corner was met by the well timed run of captain Oman who headed powerfully into the back of the net. “In the first half, I thought we were very much in control of the game,” said Rovers Director of Football Brian Laws. “We looked composed on the ball, passed it well at times when we could.” GENTS CUT €10 RETIRED GENT €8 STUDENTS €8 KIDS €8 OR TWO FOR €14 HOT TOWEL SHAVE €18

BARBER & SHAVING PARLOUR

BILLY DENNEHY The Tralee Native Has Really Made A Mark In Tallaght Since His 2010 Transfer. Billy Dennehy is one of ten Rovers players who are contracted for the 2013 season. The Tralee native has been a key player for Shamrock Rovers since signing for the club in 2010 from Cork City. Previous to that he played with Derry City and was managed by Roy Keane during his time at Sunderland. To date this season, the winger has scored six goals,a return that he may view as disappointing given his tally in 2011. Dennehy was actually top scorer in all competitions with Rovers last season with 16 goals in total including 9 scored in the league. He also topped the assist charts at the club, showing his value in helping Rovers have their most successful season ever – Airtricity League champions,Setanta Sports CupWinners and Europa League group stage participants. He racked up 13 assists with 9 coming in the league. His prowess from dead ball situations is a real assist to Rovers and he has scored three memorable free kicks in Tallaght. His first was a rocket into the top corner of the net against Sligo in September 2010. He also scored two in a week last season, first against Galway United and the second against PAOK in the Europa League group stages.

The Hoops allowed Bray a goal 11 minutes into the second half but McCabe sealed things 10 minutes from time with a penalty after Twigg had been fouled. “I thought we looked menacing from set plays and caused them all sorts of problems. What pleased me most was the fact that we were getting a lot of crosses in the box,” explained Laws. It was a different story in the next game. Rovers took on Derry City in Tallaght for the 3rd time this season. Derry had won 3-0 in the first leg of the Setanta Sports Cup, with the other league game being a 1-1 draw. This time Derry inflicted a 3-1 defeat. Rovers trailed 2-0 at half time after conceding a 6th minute header and a penalty that Rovers felt aggrieved with. When Oscar Jansson forced Derry’s Rory Patterson around him and away from goal, there was minimal contact. Patterson seemed to take an extra stride before going down easily. Assistant referee Mark Douglas raised his flag for the penalty. The Hoops were 3-0 down a minute into the second half but pulled a goal back through Tommy Stewart. The game was played in front of several hundred German fans in Dublin to see their national team win 6-1. Rovers had promoted the game with the away fans and were pleased with the numbers who made it to Tallaght. “I could turn round and say losing Finn out of midfield hurt us,” said Laws after the game about the departure of his star midfielder after only 27 minutes due to injury. “McCabe was out of side. All of a sudden,we’ve had three of the players who’ve been in our midfield out. So that hasn’t helped but I wouldn’t use it as an excuse.”
