It was out with the old and in with the new at Shamrock Rovers as fans’ favourite Gary Twigg said farewell to the club and new manager Trevor Croly was unveiled. THE HOOPS, who sacked Stephen Kenny back in September before Brian Laws arrived as director of football for the remainder of the campaign, have ended their search for a new boss after interviewing a number of candidates. The new man in the hotseat, who was unveiled last Wednesday November, 7 is former player Trevor Croly. The former St Patrick's Athletic defender returns to the club where he served as Michael O'Neill's assistant manager before falling out with the current Northern Ireland boss in June of last year. A highly regarded coach, Croly was recruited by Liam Buckley to assist him at St Patrick's Athletic this season, and the duo combined to steer the Saints to third place in the league and the FAI Cup final which they lost to Derry City last Sunday. That defeat had a major knock-on effect on his new job, with the Hoops now out of Europe in 2013 after a disastrous season. Croly will be charged with rebuilding the side, with many of the squad out of contract. One man who will be hugely missed, and hard to replace, is former striker Gary Twigg who played his last game for the club v Sligo last month and signed off by scoring two goals against the league champions. Twigg, who quit Rovers due to family commitments, signed a three and a half year contract with Portadown, which begins in January. "It was right to leave Shamrock Rovers on good termssaid the man who scored 88 goals for the club and won 2 Airtricity League Championship medals and a Setanta Sports Cup Winners medal. He also won the Shamrock Rovers and PFAI Player of The Year Awards in 2009 and helped the Hoops become the first Irish side to reach the group stages of the Europa League last year. Twigg will be available for the second half of the Irish League season once he gains clearance in the New Year.

Food lovers looking for top quality meals prepared by award winning chefs should visit new local restaurant The Kitchen in The Abberley Court. The man behind Tallaght’s latest eatery is Bridgestone Award winning chef Jimmy Dunne. Previous to taking over at The Kitchen, Jimmy and his wife Bev ran the Interval Bistro in The Civic Thetre for 4 ½ very successful years. When making the move to the Abberley Court in September Jimmy brought all the staff, including Head Chef Chris Stefan, from The Interval with him. “We’ve been here for over a month now and everything has been fantastic. Everyone here at the Abberley has been really great, from the management to the staff,” said Jimmy.“We want to revamp the whole hotel, full

service, food, drink, everything possible so that the customers are well looked after. The feedback from them so far has been very positive.”

As well as this they have a Family Room in the Library Room where they can serve lunch for families with children.

Offering a good selection on the menu, with a wide variety of high quality, fresh restaurant food, cooked to order,The Kitchenis a new gourmet service. One example of this is the Surprise Salad where the customer has to close their eyes and guess the ingredients of the salad which has been prepared for them fresh in the kitchen.

Jimmy will also be passing on his considerable culinary skills in a few months when he starts his cookery school.

Another new option is their Family Feast Meal which is a whole cooked chicken served in a big dish for 5 or 6 people. Jimmy wants customers to know that he and his staff will cater for all budgets for parties and functions. “We offer fresh food for parties and every menu, for every budget, is possible. We can start off from €5 per head to €32 and anywhere in between, whatever is good for the customer,” he said. “We’re also introducing a Bounce Back Card for all our valued customers. Join us for a meal and on your return get 10% off your main course.” The hotel has 4 function rooms with new menus, all fresh and handmade. They can cater for Christenings, First Communions, Confirmations and any other celebrations.

“I will be running the school for up to 10 people, showing them how to cook a 2 course meal. At the end of the course there will be a competition and the winner will get to bring 15 guests into the restaurant to cook for them.” Specials for lunch are from €5 to €11, the bar menu is available from 2pm and the early bird menu is from 5pm to 7.30pm.

Since the release of his first single Dublin Town in 1997 Damien Dempsey has created five albums, won countless awards and toured the world. Mixing elements of Irish folk with Reggae, he has become a voice for the marginalised and downtrodden in Ireland. Four years on from the release of his last album The Rocky Road the fire still burns bright in Damo. InTallaght Magazine caught up with one of our greatest songwriters to discuss his new record, his inspiration and who he thinks are“the real enemy”...

You’re in the middle of a tour at the moment, how has it been going? It’s been going great. I’ve just got back from the UK. I’m playing Vicar Street in December (22nd and 23rd) I’m really looking forward to that. It sold out so we’ve had to put on a 2nd gig. A lot of my Irish fans are gone though, they’re all in Sydney!

You released your sixth and latest album Almighty Love last month, what has the reaction from the fans been like to the new material? They seem to love it, the reaction to it has been great. I realised I needed to write about what I felt

strongly about, what moved me. Some of the songs on the album are about the importance of a good community, looking after your family, friends and neightbours.

Where do you find your inspiration for writing songs? I carry a notebook with me when I’m out and about.I try to keep my eyes open and observe. It could be from day to day life, from a conversation I’ve had or a book I’ve read.Or stuff that I care about and I’m passionate about. The melodies come at home and I write the lyrics somewhere.

How do you think you’ve changed as a musician? I think I’ve got a bit more personal, I’m expressing things I wouldn’t have expressed when I was younger. I’m getting older and I don’t give a s#*t what people think anymore!

Explain to anyone who has never seen you live what your concerts are like?

They’re like a big massive singsong. The crowd always gets really involved, singing away, it’s a great feeling and the crowd goes away feeling like they’ve done a gig themselves. I suppose it’s like going to the gym for a big workout, the buzz off it.Everyone’s buzzing for 2 days after! The feedback I get sometimes from people can be so positive it’s uplifting.

What do you think of the Irish music scene right now? I think it’s very healthy at the moment and there are so many different types of music out there. I listen to all types of music, reggae, rap, good rock and roll.

How have you changed as a person What current since you started musician/band are your career? you listening to at the moment? Where is your favorite country to play? You did a project with noted street graffiti artist Maser where your lyrics What musicians appeared on inspired you? buildings all over town. How did this collaboration come about? I think I’m a bit more comfortable, and I’ve travelled a bit and seen the world, it definitely broadened the mind.

Maverick Sabre, I think he’s great, I went to see him recently in The Academy, it was a great show, good stuff. I also really like Imelda May, I think she’s great as well.

Anywhere the crowd are up for it, it doesn’t matter. Did a great gig in the Sydney Opera House last year which was fairly mad!

Bob Marley, Christy Moore, Sinead O Connor, Phil Lynott, Luke Kelly and Shane MacGowan. They cared about people and weren’t afraid to express it. Just listening to Bob, his positivity, and the way he used music to educate people and make a change. He educated me through his lyrics, said things that you didn’t hear on the news.

He was a fan of mine and he contacted me with the idea. He wanted to do something to lift peoples’ spirits. We did an exhibition called They Are Us which was a tribute to Dublin: northside and southside, the visible and the secret, the good and the bad. The aim of the project was to raise money for the homeless. We managed to raise €30,000 for the Simon Community, which they used to buy a medical van.

You toured with Morrissey a few years ago and he signed you to his label. How did all Which musician that come about? living or dead would you love to perform with? A cousin of his from Dublin gave him some of my CDs and he liked them. He’s a sound fella,he’s good craic,a very witty man,he’s always slaggin’the b****x out of everyone! Great guy.

Phil Lynott.I was too young unfortunately to have seen him play live, Luke Kelly as well. A lot of my heroes died in the 80’s. I was like “What’s going on, stop dying!”

What are your ambitions for your career? My hope for the future would be to get my music out to more people, bring the vibe around, get my message out there.

What would your message be? Keep singing all your cares away.

What advice would you have for young musicians? Try to be original. Don’t sign anything, and be careful with stuff like management contracts, gentlemen’s agreements. Put in the work as well.

Do you know that Dublin footballer, and goal scoring hero, Kevin McManamon sang his own version of your song Sing All Your Cares Awayat the Dubs homecomingin Merrion Sq. last year after winning the All Ireland? Yeah I know! I was in Coppers with them the night before, great craic, some sing song!

InTallaght_Edition25MasterSoFar_Layout 1 07/11/2012 21:29 Page 18

18

In the past you’ve sung about the Celtic Tiger and the effect it had on Irish society, do you deal much with the current economic problems in the country on Almighty Love? Well I didn’t want to be on about it too much on the album. People have had four years of it now and are sick listening about it on the radio. There’s one song on the album called Moneyman about how the senior bondholders are the real rulers of the country and our politicians are just puppets. The money men, the IMF and the big bankers are tightening the screws now on us,they are the real enemy.

What have been the high points of your career so far? Meeting my heroes and getting to work with a lot of them, people like Christy, Sinead.

Any low points? No it’s been all good.

I know you’ve done a bit of acting in the past, is this something you would like to get more involved with in the future? Yeah I would indeed, I’ve done a bit in the past and I’m going to be shooting a film called Cardboard Gangsters by a young Traveller called John Connors. The film is set in Darndale and I’m looking forward to being involved.

Almighty Love is available now in record shops and online. Signed copies are available at www.myplaydirect.com/damien-dempsey and a digital deluxe edition is available on iTunes.

Have you played in Tallaght before?

Yes I have, in the Civic. I’m not just saying this but I genuinely do love playing the Civic Theatre in Tallaght, they really know their audience and I’ve enjoyed all my gigs there.

How did you get into comedy?

When I was young my brother Jonathan introduced me to satire: Scrap Saturday, Spitting Image and Monty Python. At age 10, I got a video of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I remember being blown away, I loved it.Then I tried the failed musician route and I found the talking in between the songs was better than the songs! I went to the Edinburgh festival, watched 31 shows in a week and a few of the comedians were amazing so I asked myself, why were the amazing ones amazing?

Abie Philbin Bowman is a highly acclaimed Dublin comedian who hits Tallaght this week with his latest show. He took time out of his busy schedule to talk with InTallaght Magazine about everything from launching his career, performing in Pakistan and how Mitt Romney reminds him of a dirty old man!

You’re coming to the Civic Theatre in Tallaght this week to perform your latest show, could you tell us about it?

It's called Pope Benedict: Bond Villain. To my mind, the Pope is the perfect Bond Baddie. He has it all: a creepy German accent, a priceless art collection, even Diplomatic Immunity. He's real name sounds evil:'Cardinal Ratzinger'.And he's the head of a sinister organisation, hell-bent on World Domination. The idea first came to me: why is Catholic Europe (Ireland, Spain & Italy) being bailed out by Protestant Europe (Germany, the UK & Scandanavia)? Why are the Catholic countries so poor with money? Is the Vatican plotting to impoverish us, so we return to God? I haven’t included Greece because they’re Orthodox, even though their accounting isn’t orthodox!

That’s a unique way of looking at the current financial crisis?! Here in Ireland we had 800 years of oppression then we got our independence and handed over power to the Church, now the IMF have colonized us. How does this keep happening to us?! Three awful guys in a row, don’t we believe in ourselves?

You then went back and performed in Edinburgh?

Yes, in 2006, I performed my debut show, Jesus: The Guantanamo Years and I actually made money so I thought,“excellent, I can do this.” I slightly bypassed the club circuit; the reason being there’s too few clubs and too many comedians!

What did you learn from your 1st show?

It taught me something invaluable.Talking about Guantánamo, I felt I had a duty to seriously address why torture was wrong. So I used to do three or four minutes where I got quite sincere and impassioned. But then I noticed that - during that section - the audience switched off. They already knew torture was stupid. They didn’t need to be lectured. In fact, when I started lecturing they’d stop listening. I realized that what they need is for this to be explored in an intelligible way and the best way to make people think is to make them laugh.

What other comedians do you admire?

Reginald D Hunter is a big hero.I was chatting to him last week and he gave me loads of advice. He told me I was going in the right direction, which was wonderful to hear from someone you admire so much. Dara O Brian as well, he manages to discuss intelligent topics in a very accessible way.

Do you get much hassle from members of the groups that you satirize in your shows?

Not really no.I do get some people saying“oh yeah you have a go at Christians but you wouldn’t do it to Muslims” but this isn’t true. It’s just because nobody in the West knows much about Mohammed. But I do jokes about Al Quida, suicide bombers, and Islamic fundamentalists. I was doing a gig in Waterford and a woman who was at the show said“We think you shouldn’t be telling jokes about religion and politics?” I just thought, have you actually read what the name of the show is?! The kind of comedy I do isn’t for everyone.

InTallaght_Edition25MasterSoFar_Layout 1 07/11/2012 21:29 Page 21

21

You have performed What person, living all over the world, or dead, would you what has been love to work with? your most memorable gig? In November 2007 I did 'Jesus: The Guantanamo Years' at the World Performing Arts Festival in Pakistan while the country was under a state of emergency. I was worried about the political similarities between Guantánamo Bay, and the ongoing state of emergency in Pakistan (in both places, innocent people were being locked up under anti-terrorist laws, and being denied fair trials) but they adored that stuff.I was totally overwhelmed by the reaction. For most of the audience it was the 1st time they’d ever seen live comedy.

I would love to be Daniel O Connell’s warm-up guy at one of his monster rallies! He was such a dude. He was leading mass organistations long before Gandhi and he had a great sense of humour and charisma. It’s interesting that a lot of the Irish emigrants from that era who went on to dominate Chicago used the skills they learned from O Connell. He was a great showman; the theatricity he brought to his trials was brilliant.

Finally you describe yourself as a current affairs junkie, have What advice do you you been have for anyone who would like to get into comedy? You have to love it. Do as many gigs as you can.Write your own show, build it from there. Be nice to everybody and if you’re looking for gigs don’t take it personally if promoters aren’t getting back to you. They get 50 texts a day 7 days a week! Don’t be too hard on yourself; everyone is crap at the beginning.Be honest with yourself as well though and keep asking yourself “is this working out? Where do I need to be in 6 months?”

following the US Presidential Election?

Yes I have. I was reading an article recently about Mitt Romney’s aggressive business practices, how he would buy companies that were in trouble by borrowing money and then saddling the company with the debt and he just reminded me of a dirty old man parked outside the girls school in his flash car, with vodka and cigarettes which he would share with any unfortunate girl. Later he would be looking to get something in return! “Ah now you owe me for those smokes and drink and you better pay me back...” That’s what Romney reminds me of.

But the biggest video game launch of 2012 will be the latest game in the Call of Duty Series, Black Ops 2, which will be released on November 13. A huge crowd is expected at midnight with gamers wanting to be the first in the world to play the new game. Over 600 people have pre-booked with Gamestop alone and HMV is also opening for the release. If you want to be guaranteed a copy, book now and don’t be disappointed….

A promising sound from Tallaght natives Feels Like Home is Just No's debut single and also the title track from their second EP. The song starts quite gently with lead singer Laura on the keyboard. She's joined by a twanging guitar and slow drums and then Laura starts to sing. She has a distinctive voice which suits the melancholy vibe of the song and the lyrics. Most songs that I've heard that include the lyrics that someone“feels like home'’are love songs about security and belonging. This is the opposite as it is about the break down of a relationship. The person she is singing to feels like home but that feeling is gone now, or will be gone very soon. "No one's every lost someone like you. You feel like home…to haunt me. You smell like home, you taste like home to taunt me."

Vaccines hoping to come of age with difficult second album Come of Age the 2nd album from British Indie rockers The Vaccines isn’t a bad effort but not exactly the epic I expected. This record isn't going to propel them towards world domination but there’s enough decent songs on it to keep The Vaccines ticking over.

"So let's go to bed before you say something real/ Let's go to bed before you say how you feel," aren’t deep and meaningful, they’re boring and formulaic. It goes on like this, as evidenced by Bad Mood: "You look disappointed in me/ I'm not as thoughtful as you thought I'd be."

Like on their previous album What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? the music on Come Of Age is uncomplicated and easy listening, catchy even.

Teenage Icon sounds like the Ramones, while I Always Knew

There's absolutely nothing The Vaccines do on this album that hasn't been before by countless other British bands of the last 30 years. Opening track No Hope features front man Justin Young whinging about being “24 and young and bored” before telling us that“There’s no hope and it’s hard to come of age.” This sets the theme for the next four songs as Young lets us know how meaningless he thinks his thoughts are. Lines like "I could bore you with the truth about an uneventful youth/ Or you could get that rap from someone else," and

name checks Frankie Avalon and is the catchiest tune on the album.Elsewhere, there’s the rockabilly Ghost Town and the slow burning, borderline-psychedelic Aftershave Ocean.

The song builds in momentum for the last third of the song, with the repetition of the catchy chorus and the guitars taking more of a front seat.It speeds up and you can see that this is a band that has the potential for a rockier sound. It works well in contrast to the slow start. Just No are a Tallaght band that formed in early 2011 and they seem a pretty tight outfit for their comparative youth. This song was included on the Hot Press '40 Hottest Up and Coming Acts' list of 2012 and I see big things in their future.

www.facebook.com/justnoband for more In Come Of Age The Vaccines draw the listener into a universe that revolves entirely around their front man, and quite a lot of what he has got to say is… not a lot really! Despite the title of the album, don’t expect a more grown up sound from the band, or the lead singer! A sense of discomfort runs through Come of Age,a noticeably more tentative record than I would have expected for the band’s 2nd album. It’s well worth a listen but there is a sense that the band could have done better.

The latest addition to Apple's iPad lineup is the iPad mini. Apple’s iPad Mini will bring a lot more excitement and a little more confusion to the Christmas shopping season. It doesn’t take a genuis to see that the iPad Mini, Apple’s latest scaled-down tablet computer—which starts at €339— will be a sure-fire hit with longtime Apple disciples and potential converts who've been looking for a more affordable entry into the mobile computing market. The iPad Mini is perfectly sized to be stuffed in Christmas stockings. It’s 7.9 inches tall and 5.3 inches wide, compared with the full-size iPad, which is 9.5 inches by 7.31 inches. Recipients who will discover the pleasure and convenience of being able to take pictures, surf the Web, watch video, read books and listen to music on an exquisitely designed device that’s pancake thin. As enticing as that all sounds, the iPad Mini also causes a dilemma, albeit a pleasant one. The new option will make it even more difficult for Christmas shoppers to figure out which mobile device to buy for their loved ones —or for themselves. It will sit alongside the iPad 2 and fourth-generation iPad, and as it packs the same 1,024 x 768 display as the second-generation slate, apps will carry across without

any resizing. At the recent launch, Phil Schiller (Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing) didn't mention Google or the Nexus 7 by name, the rival slate (and Google's app library) was compared to the newest iOS device. On stage, he claimed that the screen, which is .9-inch larger than the Nexus 7, gives the iPad mini 35 percent more display area than Google and ASUS' collaboration. On the hardware size, the 7.2mm thick,.68 pounds device has been manufactured with an "all new" process that gives it the same anodized edges as you'll find on the iPhone 5. If you were hoping for equal specifications to the big-daddy iPad, you may be mildly disappointed. While it will pack a 5-megapixel camera and an LTE modem (if you opt to buy a cellular model), it's running the last-generation A5 CPU.However, the slower internals and less potent display may account for how the company has been able to squeeze out a claimed 10 hours of use despite the constrained space for a battery. Pre-orders for the €339, 16GB WiFi-only model begin on Friday (October 26th) and will begin shipping on November 2nd.The cellular-equipped models will begin shipping a few weeks afterward. Apple also announed their latest re-dos of MacBook Pro with retina display, the new thinner iMac and updates to its current iPad range where they replace the old 30-pin connector with their new Lightning Connector. For more information on the iPad Mini or any of the other Apple products pop into PC World who are based on Level 3 in The Square Shopping Centre.

Waiting in the shadows for the perfect moment to strike, Assassin's Creed comes back fresh faced and strong. As most people know, you play as Connor,a Native American during the war for Independence. When the game starts up though you're not Connor, you play as his father, Haytham Kenway. This is to get you used to the core gameplay. So far it has made for most interesting opening to a game I've ever played. You learn how to explore, fight, stalk your targets and just moving around the world. This section is needed to learn these things. When I was trying to fire a musket at a couple of targets, it took me a good ten minutes and I had to google it to find out just how to shoot. The combat also took a couple of fights until I got the hang of it but when I did everything just flowed for me. The world is huge. There is so much to explore in the frontier that you could leave the missions alone and just run around the map. I haven't done many missions because the world just holds my attention. Multiplayer has been updated and makes for a much better experience. There is a tutorial before you decide to jump head first into the game. Take my advice, don't jump in because you will not last. When I loaded up the multiplayer, I wasn't a big fan of it. I found it awkward and the hunting system hard. But after a couple of kills I had got the hang of it and was jumping around the map picking off targets, flying to the next.

There are two editions of the game, the normal edition which has nothing added to it and the special edition. In the special edition you get a 20 minute single player mission called, Ghost of Warand Obwandiyag's War Clubweapon. The multiplayer bonus is a sharp shooter pack, with extra characters and relics. You also get George Washington's Notebook and depending on where you get the game, either Connor's Medallion or a 12 inch figure of Connor. My overall opinion of this game, get it. You need this game. It might be the best game you'll play all year. RELEASE DATE: Out Now GENRE: Action-adventure PUBLISHER: Ubisoft PLATFORM: PS3, XBOX 360, PC

This is the bright young hope of the Peugeot range the new 208. Set to banish all thoughts of the lack lustre 207 forever, it could be just the tonic for those looking for something a little more chic and sophisticated in the non-premium supermini sector. The styling treads a fine line between individual and unattractive, while Peugeot has cleverly managed to make the 208 both smaller and more spacious than the car it replaces. Usefully this also makes it significantly lighter, too. This in turn is good news for the fun factor - and the fuel economy.A godsend, given the particular example we've got in for a week's testing is the 1.4-litre HDi 70 turbodiesel that packs just 68hp. Peugeot has fitted its smallest ever steering wheel in this car,and combined it with a chassis set-up that veers very distinctly towards the sporty. As a result, the nose is wonderfully keen to tuck into turns, compensating for the motor's lack of oomph by encouraging you to just keep on carrying the built-up speed. Peugeot has been hugely successful in the supermini segment in the past;the British-built 206 was a bestseller for years, and we don't need to remind you about the 205.We suspect that there's a whole legion of fans just waiting for another good petite Pug, and the 208 really could be it.

Peugeot will be offering the 208 is both 3 and 5 door variants comprising of three different engines and trim levels. With prices for their 1.0l petrol 3 door starting at â‚Ź14,495 their seem to be undercutting their main rivals such as the Fiesta, Polo,Yaris & Corsa. Its the first car in its class to offer Cruise Control as standard across all trim levels while the mid level (Active) trim that I drove also came equipped with a large touchscreen dash top display. I will be driving the 208 more thoroughly in the coming months but initial thoughts from driving the 1.4 HDI Diesel were that of a refined car that should give

consumers who may have not previously considered Peugeot something to serious to think about. The five door model provides easy rear access and certainly enough legroom for my rather average 5’9 frame. Rear luggage space too was generous with split folding rear seats and a very practically sized boot opening making carrying larger loads easier. The 208 is available to order now from Peugeot dealers with deliveries expected to begin later this year. For more you can visit peugeot.ie

He said construction could be completed by the end of 2017, certainly by early 2018 and the estimated cost of building the hospital will be around €500m. €200m of the funding for the hospital will come from the National Lottery. Minister Reilly said there was ample room to build a maternity hospital at the James's campus, however a final decision on this has not been made. Taoiseach Enda Kenny said work could begin immediately to prepare the site at St James's for the hospital. The Taoiseach said that the Minister for Health had been careful in his assessment of the timeline for completion of the project. He said construction could commence by 2015 but the issue of planning permission had to be gone through.

A total of seventeen awards, for categories such as business to social media, sports and digital start-up were awarded to Ireland's most innovative websites.

In a statement, the Department of Health said the decision had been led by clinical considerations. “It is essential that the new children’s hospital can deliver best clinical outcomes for our children. Co-location with St James’s and, ultimately, tri-location with a maternity hospital on the St James’s campus, will the Government believes provide the excellence in clinical care that our children deserve. “The Government also considered the very significant issues of planning, cost, time and access. Based on the detailed information available from the Dolphin process, it is confident that the hospital can be and will be built as quickly as possible on the St James’s site.” TheTallaght Hospital Action Group expressed disappointment at the decision and said it believed the Tallaght Hospital/SDCC proposal fulfilled all the minister's terms of reference with regard to accessibility, cost and value for money, timeframe and existing paediatric services.

Among the award winners were Journal.ie for its Mobile App, Trazoo.ie won the Travel, Tourism & Hospitality Award, Miinto.ie won the Retail Excellence award and The National Lottery (m.lottery.ie) won the best User Experience award. The winner of the inaugural eircom Spider Business' Choice Award,as voted by the public, was MenuPages.ie.The eircom Spider Digital Start Up Award went to Cleverbug.com, the website which personalises, prints and delivers birthday cards using Facebook photos. Carolan Lennon, Chief Commercial Officer, eircom and Chair of the Spider Awards Judging Panel said, "Congratulations to all the winners in what was a hugely successful year for the awards. This year the introduction of the eircom Spider Business' Choice Award and the Digital Start Up Award was a key part of our continued development and our desire to recognise the role of SMEs to the digital economy. The opportunity to showcase the role of SMEs to the digital economy is more important than ever and we are delighted to be a playing a part in this."

100 New Jobs For Liffey Valley & Blanchardstown Restaurant chain, Nando's, has announced the creation of 100 new jobs with the opening of two new restaurants in Blanchardstown and Liffey Valley in Dublin. Once the doors open on November 14 and November 21 respectively, the new jobs will bring Nando's workforce in Ireland to 380 people, underlining Nando's previous commitment to growing its business in Ireland, whilst supporting local employment and the local communities it serves, the company said. Nando's has been operating in Ireland since 2008, when the first restaurant was opened in Belfast's Victoria Square. Since then, the international restaurant has grown the number of Irish restaurants to nine with the opening of the two new Dublin branches. "We're really excited about expanding in Ireland with the opening of two new restaurants in great locations. Finding the right site is never easy, but after exploring a number of different locations, we decided on Liffey Valley and Blanchardstown, both vibrant, busy locations with excellent footfall," said Alan Snyman, Managing Director of Nando's Ireland.

"Regarding the new roles, we've been really impressed by the standard of the applicants in Ireland, and almost all of the roles are now filled. Having a strong, enthusiastic team in Ireland ensures that customers will have the best Nando's experience possible, which has been central to our success here." Originally set up in a small suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa in 1987,Nandos has since grown to have over 850 restaurants in 34 countries worldwide.

Irish Exports to hit €183b this year

The Bling’s The Thing for Chrismas

The Irish Exporters Association has said that exports are now on track for the biggest ever sales of over €183 billion for 2012. New figures from the association show that exports from Ireland grew in July, August and September.

A new Ladies Boutique has opened in Killinarden Enterprise Centre, just in time for the Christmas trade.“Lots of Bling” is a haven for those shoppers wishing to buy a sparkly little number for the Christmas party season and maybe even get a start on the present buying at the same time. The shop stocks a wide array of quality clothes, jewellery and accessories, all at recession friendly prices.

The figures show that export growth was helped by strength in the "manufacturing and merchandise" sector, from firms that make pharmaceuticals, chemicals and medical devices. These saw growth in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and accounted for 61pc of Irish manufacturing exports. A weakening of the euro against the dollar and sterling in the three month period, which improved the price competitiveness of Irish exports by 10pc outside the euro zone, also helped the sector's performance. Continuing the trends of earlier in the year, the export of services continued to grow, with computer services driving the growth.

“I recognise the fact that a lot of women do not like to be seen in the same dress twice, especially with photos circulating on social media websites.Looking good and creating a new look for each night out comes with a price tag - not any more!” said Laura Blighe, owner of Lots of Bling. Opening a new shop during a recession might be a risky move but Laura, who has over 7 years experience in retail says “I had always thought I’d love to work for myself and have my own independent shop, so I started doing my research and now here I am and I’m delighted with how it all turned out.”

Sometimes I sit and wonder about the stuff I don’t know, like what the heck the earth was like 100 years ago. Did cavemen ride on dinosaurs and flowers even grow? Did giant spiders rule the earth? Were deserts filled with snow? There’s no book for humans so how are we know what life was like 100 years ago ?

Apart from the novelty of recognising the settings, this is also a very good book! Louise Phillips and her book, Red Ribbons should be familiar to regular readers of InTallaght by now.We first interviewed her in Edition 16 and we at InTallaght have been following the book’s progress ever since. It was with great curiosity that I finally sat down to read Louise’s debut novel. It’s not the kind of book I usually read, psychological crime fiction being fairly niche and not really on my radar. I don’t usually comment on book covers either but this one would catch my eye in a bookshop, with the stark red and black standing out against a brightly cloudy sky.

The book is told in three voices, which as happens in my favourite type of plot interweave and interact with each other as the book progresses. Unusually, one of these voices is set in a different typeface, setting him,‘the serial killer’ apart from ‘the criminal psychologist’ and ‘the accused woman’.At first I found this a little jarring but as I got further sucked into the book’s world,I actually found it fitting. Set in Tallaght, Rathmines, Terenure, Crumlin, Harold’s Cross,Kilnamanagh and Gorey, this novel had,for me,the added bonus of knowing some of the locations where the action was happening. It makes it so much easier to visualise if you can imagine, for instance, the canal bank beside which one of the victims lived. I found it to be a little bit of a slow starter.I was intrigued but not quite hooked for the first few chapters. As the story went on however, I found it quite difficult to put down. By the end it was an engrossing read. One of the strengths of Red Ribbons is the criminal psychology that runs throughout. Kate Pearson is a sympathetic character, trying her best to help solve these crimes while trying to juggle motherhood

and a relationship that is struggling to survive her obsession with the case. I was a bit apprehensive about this book as I was afraid it would be more of a horror story. I don’t deal well with jumpy frights or creepy things. While horrific events happen in the telling of the story,it is from the detatched perspective of a psychopath, which actually makes it more interesting. This is a good story, well told and I look forward to Louise’s next novel,The Doll’s House, next year! About The Author Born in Dublin, Louise Phillips returned to writing in 2006, after raising her family. Louise’s work has been published as part of many anthologies, and has won and been short and long listed for numerous awards since. Red Ribbonshas been shortlisted in the Irish Book Awards as Best Crime Novel of the Year 2012. Until November 18, visit www.irishbookawards.ie to cast your vote.

I seem to be getting small veins I often go out on a Friday evening directly from work - coming through on my cheekbones I think I have the outfits sorted - how best can I cover them up? but am unsure of my makeup - what are the best colours to wear to the office that will work for their nighttime too? Niamh, Walkinstown

Hi Niamh, these are called tread veins which are caused by the little capillary bursting under the skin.It is a very common skin problem in Irish skin. They can be easily covered by makeup or even a good concearler. If your skin has redness as well you should use a more yellow tone concealer as this will help not only to cover the veins but also the high colour. If you have any questions about makeup application, AnJels Pro Makeup team is here to help! Simply email the team on makeup@intallaght.ie and check the next edition to see if your question has been answered by the experts!

Lisa, Kiltipper

Hi Lisa, I would suggest you use neutral colours like browns, greys and taupe eye shadow colours. You can quickly change this look into a night time look by adding black eyeliner and a warm toned blush.

Dahlias Always lift after the first hard frost blackens the foliage as this triggers the dormant mechanism. if you live in a very mild area, you could try leaving them in place, cutting them down, and covering them with protective mulch such as bark mulch. Otherwise you need to lift and store the tubers in a dry place protected from frost. Dig up the dahlias once the foliage has been blackened by the first frost. Leave on about 10–20cm of stem. Lightly remove as much soil as possible and put them in the shed or greenhouse to dry off. Once completely dry remove all remaining soil when dry and put them in a frost-free place until spring. You can put them in shredded paper or dry peat to help ensure they stay dry. In early spring replace the paper with compost to encourage them to start growing. Water lightly. Once healthy shoots and the first leaves appear, and there is no further threat of frost, plant them back in the border, putting plenty of compost in the planting hole.

Lift tuberous begonias before they become mush with the frosts. Dry them out and place them in a dark cool place as with the dahlias. Preparing Your Soil For Next Year For beds that have no plant cover in winter, keep going with the winter digging until the soil is too hard with frost. Use compost, peat, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can get your green fingers on to replace the lost nutrients in the soil.It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clumps down, so this makes spring planting a great deal easier! Roses Now is a very good time to plant new roses. First soak the root ball in water, mix the compost from the pot into the soil, put some compost at the bottom of the hole and remember it is very important that the hole is deep enough for soil to cover the graft on the rose bush.Prune existing roses by about half to help against wind rock and remove all fallen leaves but do not put in compost bin as this will help in the battle against fungus.

Frost Protection Protect pots that are not frost resistant with plastic bubble wrap or if they are not too heavy, move into a sheltered place. To prevent the garden hose from being damaged from the frosts put it in the shed, but make sure you drain out any remaining water. Also protect outdoor taps by insulating with some hessian or bubble wrap. Clear out bird boxes and put out some food and water for the birds such as seeds, nuts, suet, fruit, and brown bread.White bread is not advisable. Lawns There may still be time before the frost comes to lay turf on prepared soil. If we have some mild weather your lawn may well still need one final cut. Once that’s done get your mower serviced. This saves a lot of heartbreak next spring when it won’t start.Make sure to stay off the lawn when there is a frost; all you will do is damage the grass.

Hydration And Your Muscles - The Effects Two of the main components that make up the human body are protein and water. You may have a fundamental understanding of what these nutrients do and why the body needs them, but I think that you would pay more attention to their intake if you had a better understanding. Some of you know that you need at least one gram of protein per pound of body weight, but for someone who is training hard and actively trying to build lean body mass, they need much more. Water is similar, because you should have more than just an adequate amount to prevent dehydration. Maximize your training by solidifying your protein and water intake. Humans are 45%-70% water Muscle tissue is 75% water Humans can survive 4x longer without food than water 1% loss of hydration=elevated core body temp & impaired performance 3% loss of hydration=significantly impaired loss of performance 5% loss=cardiovascular strain 7% loss=decreased ability to regulate heat 10% loss=heat stroke or unconsciousness (% based on body weight) Water is necessary for almost all reactions and enzymes in the body. If you don’t have plenty of it, then your body won’t be functioning optimally…Your food won’t be digested as well, your energy levels will subside, your training won’t be efficient, your joints, muscles, and fascia will be

stiff and sticky, and you’ll generally reduce the quality of everything you do during the day (including trying to lose body fat and grow muscle). It’s all a result of the normal chemical reactions in your body not working as well since they’re scrounging for ingredients. If you’re going to spend all this time giving a shit about your training, then set yourself up to optimally succeed. Regardless of fitness, people should drink half your body weight in ounces of water. This is the very minimum.Protein synthesis is totally dependent on cell hydration – if you're even a little dehydrated the ability to recover from intense training is totally compromised. Getting plenty of water is a no-brainer here! Be aware of these signs of dehydration: Dark yellow, strong smelling urine Decreased urination frequency Rapid resting heart rate Muscle soreness and cramping Thirst (too late) Headache and discomfort Lethargy and chills Do yourself a favor scrap the Lucozade. Get yourself a water bottle if you don’t already have one, do your own math to see how much you should be drinking, and set yourself up to get the most out of your training.

THE BLACK PANTHER Kickboxing Club has been running in Brookfield since May 1993 and now has 80 members. Current Chief Instructor Norman Kelly started up the club after he returned to the area from the UK almost 20 years ago. Norman told InTallaght:“Martial arts clubs were hard to find back when I started out, however, I got lucky and found one in my area which was being run by renowned kung fu instructor Christy Dennison and went on to train with Master John Fanning. “I moved to England where I continued training and worked out in many top class gyms and clubs. It was during this phase that I started coaching.” Upon his return to Dublin, Norman put his new-found skills to use and set about opening the Black Panther Club. “I wanted to give something back to the community, to keep kids off the streets and give them something to do.” said Norman. Focusing mainly on full-contact kickboxing, the club became well known and its reputation soon spread. The club, which once counted a young Robbie Keane among its members, is proud of the fact that it has produced many great fighters over the years, including Rebecca Dillon, Martin Kenny and Michael Caswell who between them have won domestic, European and World Championships.

Many of the young men and women that have passed through the club’s doors down the years are still actively involved today. Some, such as Thomas Bateman and Mick Finnegan, have even gone on to become instructors them selves, passing on their knowledge to the next generation. While rightly proud of the numerous champions that it has produced, the emphasis is also very much on giving local kids, some as young as five and six, an opportunity to develop as responsible young adults in a safe, controlled and disciplined environment. The club, which considers itself a ‘large social family’, continues to go from strength to strength and has become one of the main focal points of the local community. In fact, many of the original students are parents themselves now and their children, in turn, are training at the club. Now Norman is supported by several experienced coaches, giving him a little more time to himself, although not much! “I am very proud of the help and support I receive from my students, both past and present,” he said.“They are an immense help in supporting the ongoing development of the club and I am genuinely grateful for their input.” Club Goals: 1. To make sure the members enjoy themselves 2. To keep them fit. 3. To win – it’s the journey to the win that we’re interested in.

Rovers Revival Required In 2013 The season started with much promise for Shamrock Rovers but they patently failed to deliver on the expectations for the season. There was to be no three in a row in the league as the Hoops relinquished their Airtricity League title without too much of a fight to Sligo Rovers and the Hoops failed to even qualify for Europe.

When the Hoops travelled to Sligo in mid-May,they knew they needed a win to keep in touch with Sligo the run-away league leaders. However, they turned in a disjointed performance that saw the Hoops finish the game with nine men suffering a three-goal defeat.

Rovers also lost their Setanta Sports Cup All-Ireland crown. All the club had to show in terms of honours at the end of the season was their first Leinster Senior Cup since 1997, a top league striker award for Gary Twigg and the Airtricity League Pitch of the Year for Tallaght Stadium.

During this time, Rovers continued to maintain an unbeaten home record but it was to be another heavy away defeat that would heap the pressure on Stephen Kenny. Losing to your main rivals is bad enough but Rovers allowed Bohs to roll over them 4-0 in Dalymount Park after an abject performance doing untold damage to club morale.

Stephen Kenny was the new man in charge at the beginning of the season and he spoke on his appointment, at the turn of the year, about his aim to “win matches and challenge for trophies. I want to win as much as I can that has to be the objective”.While he may have won the Leinster Senior Cup,that wasn’t the trophy that Rovers fans coveted. The season started well as the team claimed four wins

In July, Rovers looked to rekindle the success in Europe they achieved the previous year. Unseeded in the Champions League, they were given probably the easiest draw they could have got against FK Ekranas. Rovers dominated the first leg against the Lithuanian champions hitting the woodwork twice in Tallaght but they couldn’t break the deadlock.

and a draw from the opening five league games and progressed to the Setanta Sports Cup semi-final. However, the first seeds of the season’s troubles were sown in early April when Rovers were torn apart 5-1 by St. Patrick’s Athletic in Richmond Park.

The season defining defeat for Rovers was the 2-1 away loss in the second leg in Panevezys against Ekranas. The winners knew they would face an attractive game against Anderlecht in the following round but this couldn’t inspire a good performance or result from Rovers – Ekranas would go on to lose 11-0 on aggregate to Anderlecht. Juxtaposed against the qualification for the Europa League group stage last year, the embarrassingly early elimination from Europe to Ekranas in 2012 meant the exit door awaited Stephen Kenny sooner rather than later.

Elimination followed from the Setanta Sports Cup. It was an early sending off in the semi-final first leg that shaped that cup exit with Derry winning 3-0 in Tallaght. Rovers came very close to taking the second leg to extra time

when they won 2-0 in ninety minutes in the Brandywell.

BARBER & SHAVING PARLOUR

The players did respond well on their return to domestic action winning away in Derry again, this time in the league, and winning in Turners Cross against Cork for the first time in a decade. Rovers won the Leinster Senior Cup beating St.Pat’s CY in the final played at Tallaght Stadium. However, the Hoops’ 1-0 loss in Tallaght against Bohemians, the first time Bohs had beaten Rovers in the venue, precipitated the departure of Kenny from the club. Shelbourne knocked Rovers out of the FAI Cup in the quarterfinal before Brian Laws was appointed as Director of Football taking charge of team affairs for the rest of the season. Performances did improve under Laws however he couldn’t get the team into third place in the league, which would have guaranteed Rovers European football next year. Laws left the club at the end of the season having given his views on what structures needed to be put in place surrounding the playing squad for the club to return to the success of previous seasons.

Laws’ overall record in charge of Rovers saw the Hoops win four matches along with three defeats. The wins included a 7-0 demolition of Dundalk and a 2-0 win over Sligo Rovers, on the night the Bit o’ Red were crowned 2012 Airtricity League Champions. Ronan Finn shone for Rovers throughout the season and deservedly won the Player of the Year Award with ‘keeper Oscar Jansson winning the Young Player award. Rovers’ only involvement in the cup final was as an interested spectator but Pat’s failure to beat Derry City meant there would be no European football for Rovers in 2013. There will be no Gary Twigg either as the player had ended his time in Tallaght signing for Portadown. He signed off as he started scoring goals. He scored two goals in both his final home and away games for the Hoops. His tally was a remarkable 88 competitive goals in four seasons with Rovers. He finished top scorer in the league again – his third time in four seasons.
