Hi Everyone, You’re all very welcome to our late November Edition of InTallaght Magazine. I hope I find all our readers in great form and that you enjoy this edition, our second last of 2012, which I’ve just noticed features a lot of anniversaries! In this issue we have a very entertaining interview with one of Ireland’s most successful comedians Jason Byrne ahead of his gig in Tallaght in December. Jason was an absolute pleasure to chat to and is just as funny in real life as he is when he’s at work!

Tallaght has been included in the final shortlist of seven cities for the Access City Award 2013. The Access City Award is an innovative competition between European cities which was launched in 2010 to promote accessibility in the urban environment. The Access City Award is open to all EU cities / urban areas of over 50,000 inhabitants. The Award recognises and celebrates cities that are dedicated to providing an accessible environment for all, and for disabled people in particular. The Award is part of the EU’s wider effort to create a barrier-free Europe. In line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, accessibility is one of the pillars of the European Union’s Disability Strategy 2012-2020 which aims at creating a barrier-free Europe for all. Tallaght is the main ‘County Town’ for South Dublin County. Its’ growth from a village of 2,500 people in the mid 1960’s to the present day population of approximately 83,152 (Census 2011), has
made Tallaght one of Ireland’s major urban centres.Tallaght displays a high level of accessibility both within its’ built facilities i.e. Tallaght Stadium, the County Library and County Hall, and across its’ external urban environment i.e. Sean Walsh Park Accessible Recycling and Sensory Garden and the Tallaght Zip. Speaking about the nomination Mayor Cathal King said “I am delighted that Tallaght has been shortlisted for the Access City Award 2013.To be included in the final seven, out of 99 cities is quite an achievement and a wonderful testament to the strong commitment to access and inclusion that exists within South Dublin County”. South Dublin County Council has a proven track record in promoting accessibility through both the provision of accessible infrastructure, and through the delivery of inclusive, accessible services.Examples the Jobot’s Access All Areas, and online video access guides web resources; the establishment of the South Dublin County Disability Advisory / Consultative Panel; provision of a significant range of assistive technologies and resources in alternative formats across the South Dublin Library Network. Their award winning Digital Books Service has significantly improved access for library members in general, but most significantly for many disabled members and a considerable programme of access works undertaken across the County since 2005 (including the significant access improvements to Tallaght Stadium and Camac Valley Caravan and Camping Park). The awards ceremony takes place in Brussels on Monday the 3rd December,International Day of Disabled Persons. The awards will be presented by Ms. Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the European Commission.

ALONE, a charity supporting older people in need this year celebratedits’ 35th anniversary and to mark the occasion InTallaght Magazine spoke with CEO of ALONE Sean Moynihan. The charity came into existence after a bitterly cold spell in 1976 when eight older people were found dead in their Dublin homes within a few weeks of each other. Willie Bermingham (1942-90) who was then a Dublin fireman, discovered the remains of some of these forgotten older people and, along with a number of friends, distributed posters to let the public know that many over-60 s in Dublin were suffering cold, hunger, loneliness, depression, illness and isolation. “Willie Bermingham described graphically the awful scene he encountered in that chalet on that bitter cold February day. A frail, old man, blind in one eye, lying dead on a wet bed with an old blanket gripped in his left hand, two cold rooms in that timber chalet, no fuel for the fire and no food in the press and he half naked, stiff in his death sentence, alone and in misery” Willie and his friends began to collect and distribute donations of food, fuel, clothing and furniture and this led to them founding ALONE in 1977. The name was chosen as an acronym of the words; A Little Offering Never Ends. The organisation neither seeks nor receives any government funding. ALONE values this independence as it leaves them free to act without delay to help older people in crisis. Now in their 35th year of providing friendship, housing and support to isolated older people Chief Executive Sean explained how ALONE operate: “We have three main services for older people. The volunteer befriending service provides companionship to
over 200 older people each week that would otherwise be lonely and isolated. We also run a number of social events throughout the year. “Our housing support service provides 100 homes for life for older people who were homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Each person is encouraged and supported to live independently for as long as possible. “Our community response service responds to requests from older people that are in emergency situations or suffering from hardship; providing them with support across a wide range of issues including financial, housing, personal safety, medical and basic provisions.” Sean said that he wanted older people in Tallaght to be aware of what the charity can offer them, if needed. “I was checking the database earlier and I noticed we have quite a low number of people from Tallaght being referred to us or availing of our services. We want to let people in the area know that we are there for anyone who may need any of our services. “We are also always looking for volunteers with certain specialist skills so if any of your readers would be interested we would love them to get in touch with us.” As more and more older people contact ALONE for support, the organisation remains determined to respond to their needs with the continued support of the public.
If you or someone you know needs a helping hand, or if you can volunteer your time, or can make a donation to ensure ALONE’s vital services continue please phone 01 679 1039 or visit www.alone.ie for more information.

Since winning the So You Think You’re Funny? talent contest in Edinburgh in 1996, Jason has built a hugely Have you played in successful career as a standup. Tallaght before?
It’ll be great to be back in Dublin because at the moment I’m touring the UK, playing in places like Northampton, Manchester, Liverpool, Plymouth and I don’t know those places too well so I have to read up on them, which I won’t have to do in Tallaght! I’m really looking forward to it, it’s going to be full on madness.
He has also turned his hand to acting,TV and radio work winning awards and accolades with his brand of zany, madcap comedy. His original way of looking at the world, combined with his talent for playing off whatever the audience throws at him have led to him being billed as the “biggest selling comedian in Edinburgh”. With a growing international profile, Jason has performed in New York, Boston, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brussels, Milan, Paris and Australia. InTallaght Magazine caught up with Jason while he was on his way to a gig in Manchester and had a great chat about his career, his inspiration and the difference between crowds in Britain and Ireland. In between changing trains and being thrown out of a carriage for talking on his phone, Jason let us in on what fans can expect from his latest show…
Years ago yeah.I was booked to do a gig in the college (IT Tallaght) then I get down there and they bring me to this f***in’bar and told me I had to do the gig there,I said I’m f***in’ not doing it there! I told them I’m never going back there again! No I’m really looking forward to going back and I love that it’s a theatre show as I feel my shows are much better in a theatre. It’s going to be great craic.
You’re currently touring the UK how’s it going and how have the crowds responded? It’s been great. The British are brilliant, it’s easy enough to gig there. They laugh, they’re mental. In Ireland everyone is a comedian.Their attitude to comedians is“I’m not paying into this sh*t,sure I’ve loads a stories, what do I want to be paying to hear someone else’s stories!”
You’re bringing your new show The People’s Puppeteer to the Civic Theatre in December, Comedy wise how do what can the audience expect? Ireland and Britain differ? Firstly let me say I’ll be elated to be back in Ireland gigging.I’m constantly on planes trains and automobiles so it’ll be great to bring this show back from the UK. Every show I do I always get them up to do something with me so it's like I control them. That's where it came from, so I can keep me jacket and me old hat.But yeah, I'm definitely excited about it. It's going to be nuts.To get a feel readers can check out Jason Byrne Special ITV clips on YouTube, it’s just mayhem. It’s like I’ve got a big pot and the audience and I’m going to put them all in it and add a bit of sparkle of Christmas.
Well comedy was invented in Britain; they have this amazing comedy history from the Goons in the 50’s to Monthy Python and comedy clubs whereas we were way behind them.We had cabaret. A lot of Irish people think “Ah the English are bleeding borin’ and all!”Actually I better be careful I’m on the phone here to you standing on a train platform in England, people could get the wrong idea! (Laughs)

You’ve done stand up, radio, and television, how do they compare? Well radio is a great discipline, I love it as you have to try and keep it together. Live stand up I love obviously, you get to edit yourself. TV is probably the worst ‘cause they edit the sh*t out of you! I did the Graham Norton show recently and it went really well, I was on for ages. Then after they were done editing it I was only on for 5 mins! It was“Here’s Jason Byrne..and now please welcome Lady Gaga!” Live TV is good though.
A lot of what you do seems improvised on the spot... is it? No f***in’ way! At a gig recently a guy up on the stage saw my set list, he says “I thought you made this shit up?!” - No I don’t! 80% of it is prepared, only the stuff with the audience, the interacting is improvised. I’d freak out if I didn’t have it planned. What am I going to talk about!
You’ve done shows all over the world, where is your favorite place to play? Australia. Without a f***in’ doubt! It's a place that I love going to. It's holidays, there's no other way of looking at it. I’m going there to do three shows at the end of December in Melbourne, I'm actually really looking forward to it, it's the only place I actually look forward to gigging. Australia is just beautiful, the heat, the culture, the fans. In Australia I end up skipping to the gigs!
What are the audiences like there? The crowds are f***in’ brilliant! They’re like the Irish crowds except they do what they’re told! If you ask them to do something they just do it, no questions no problems. In Ireland the audiences are like “F**k off I’m not doing that you spa!” I also love playing in New Zealand, the relationship between the Kiwis and the Aussies is like us and the English. We take the piss out of the English but the English don’t care at all, they’re all like “Oh I’d love to go to Ireland.”The Kiwis do that to the Aussies.
How do you go about writing your material? I always bring an idea on to the stage. I’ll get props in a shop - like recently I bought a giant peg – and then bring those to the stage so I can come up with a short story on stage. I’ve found there’s no point writing a big show at home and trying it out on myself. People will just think “Oh that’s not funny.” I write everything depending on reaction, over 2 or 3 nights, what people laugh at I’ll keep. It all starts small. Also anything that happens to me, stuff in the news etc. Comics have cartoon heads! Comics see the world in cartoon form. It’s a weird world!
Your wife seems to provide you with a lot of material, does she mind you quoting her in your shows? No not at all. My wife on stage is not my real wife. Of course it’s all exaggerated, she’ll be like “I never said that!”Though she did actually really provide a line I use that I love. After I’d just told her I’d won an award she said “Why don’t you ring your mother, she might lick your ass for 5 minutes!”
When you were young did you always want to be a comedian? No! It’s a total myth, every comedian falls into it. I saw Billy Connelly do stand up when I was about 16 or 17 and I remember thinking “I could never do that.”
So how did you end up becoming a comedian? In the International Bar one night a friend of mine went up to Barry Murphy and said “My friend really wants to be a comedian” and I was like “No I don’t!” So Barry says to me “I’ll put you down for six gigs.” So I did my first gig with all my mates there and they all laughed. The following week there were none of my mates there and nobody laughed.
Do you still get nervous before gigs? Yeah I still get nervous! Two hours on your own on stage is a long two hours if it doesn’t work out. Doing comedy looks easy but it’s not, it’s a full-on experience. I get nervous about everything, I’m nervous right now about this train being on time! I’m a very highly-strung person.
You have two sons, would you like them to follow their Dad into comedy? No not at all! I wouldn’t mind them doing acting. They’re going to be kicked into college! After the Leaving Cert everyone should go to college. I never got a chance to go myself. Hopefully if one of them is a doctor my dream is to walk up the corridor to their surgery, in a full clown costume and say to the receptionist “I’m here to see my son the doctor.”
InTallaght_Edition26_PRINT_ED_Layout 1 21/11/2012 22:10 Page 18
18
What do they think of your shows? They never get to see them as they’re too young! One is 12 and the other is 5. Standup is not for under 18’s. I think it’s hilarious when people get offended, what are you doing taking your child to a stand up show ya mickey! They see a few clips of me on TV that’s about it.
Who inspired you? It’s complicated. No one person in particular. I watched comedy all my life. All the comedy from the 70’, 80’s and 90’s inspired me really.People like Spike Milligan,Tommy Cooper, Billy Connelly, all the British TV. I got my knowledge from them.
Who would you love to work with, living or dead? I’d love to do a movie with any of the classic actors.Someone like De Niro, Pacino or Hoffman. I think it would be so cool acting opposite them,to hear them deliver their lines would be amazing.
Finally what advice would you have for any young people who want to get into comedy? Make sure you always do your gig for the audience and not for other comics. Other comics don’t pay your wages, the audience do. I’ve seen it happen, I won’t name any names, of comedians trying to be quirky and fun, and other comics thinking it was hilarious and the crowd not finding it funny at all.
Jason plays The Civic Theatre on Wednesday December 12 at 8.00pm. Tickets are priced at €20 and are available to book online on The Civic Theatre’s website: www.civictheatre.ie or in person from their box office.

Who has influenced you? Anto – All the Ibiza djs like Karl Cox, Steve Lawlor, Pasha regulars. I’ve been over there and that’s where I’d love for us to play in the future. For a dj Ibiza is like what Wembley is like to a footballer. Everyone wants to play there.
What are your plans for the next year? Kev – We’d be looking to break into festivals. We were knocking on the door this summer but it was just a little to early for us, we weren’t established enough. We also plan to hopefully get bigger and better, get our name out there, make our own tunes, make a few beats. We want to give a lot back to all the people who’ve been there for us.
House Bullyz are a DJ group of 3 friends with a shared love and passion for House Music. The lads are just about to celebrate one year together and InTallaght caught up with ToneZ, Kev K & Lee D for a chat.
What do you think of the Irish dance music scene at the moment? Lee – It’s coming around full circle, it’s got a second lease of life. It tailed off a bit at the end of the 90’s and a lot of RnB came in then but now it’s on the way back. There’s a growing underground scene in Dublin now with a lot of people doing good stuff.
How did you guys get together? What did you think of the coverage of Dance music in the media following the Swedish House Mafia gig in So how has the 1st year gone? the Phoenix Park? We were all gigging in Tallaght on our own and we met up and decided to put our heads together, that was November 2011.We played out 1st gig in Hush on 29th December and the momentum just went from there. We play all types of House Music, hence the name House Bullyz!
Kev – It’s been great, we’ve been gigging all over Dublin, in some big venues like Hush, Club M, Entourage Nightclub, The Village Venue, Sin, The Wright Venue. The crowds are getting bigger and the feedback has been good. A big break for us was when Al Gibbs featured us as the on his show on FM 104 Freeks on Friday, we were the House Tune Of The Week.
Anto - The coverage was wrong, it was just a bad mix of all the acts on the day. I was there and left after 45 minutes as it didn’t feel safe. But to blame dance music is all wrong. If you go anywhere in Europe, any festival in any city involving House music there’s no trouble at all, nothing like what went on in the Phoenix Park.Over here some dance music is a bit of a magnet for scumbags.
What can people expect if they come to see you lads?

A record crowd of approx 7000 turned up to welcome Santa to The Square on Thursday 15 November. Making his way from the North Pole straight to Tallaght to say hello to all the boys and girls, he was ably assisted by his elves and other costume characters. An amazing display of fireworks greeted his arrival as local people came in force to kick off the Festive Season. Upon arrival Santa said a few words about how happy he was to be in The Square and to see so many people turn up to see him. After his speech Santa, accompanied by Jack Frost and friends, made his way to the Centre Mall followed by his elves and thousands of spectators through the east entrance up to where the Christmas Tree is located. Santa took to the stage beside the tree and called upon Jacob Keenan our first Little Star,to turn on the Christmas lights. When the Christmas Lights were duly turned on the crowd erupted with a massive cheer. An enchanting array of lights lit up the centre and everyone that was there knew that Christmas had arrived at the Square. As the crowd looked on in awe Santa went into a curtain box on stage and suddenly reappeared from a gift wrapped box above the centre stage as confetti filled the air and fell down onto to the crowd below. Santa then made his way to his Grotto where a large queue had already formed to greet him, as he opened the doors dry ice floated out amongst everyones feet and a winter wonderland was revealed. Santa will be here at the Square until Christmas eve make sure you pop into to see him in his amazing grotto.
Jacob Lights up the Square. Jacobs’ Journey continued last week and flanked by his cousin Moo-Moo he had the honor of lighting up the Square and welcoming Santa to Tallaght. There was Fireworks, Cheeky Monkey and a host of other characters on hand to welcome Santa but Jacob the first recipient of The Squares Little Stars award stole the show! Jacobs Mammy Lynne who was with him on the big night was delighted that Jacob’s bravery was rewarded by the Square who have commissioned the Little Stars award to reward the bravery and outstanding achievements of young people in the Tallaght area. There were fireworks and Christmas lights galore in the Square last Thursday night but nothing shone so bright as Jacob’s smile.

The future seems sunny indeed for these Northern lads I’ve been a massive fan of Two Door Cinema Club since I first got my hands on their debut album at the start of last year but the release of the band’s sophomore album, Beacon in September evaded my notice until a few weeks ago when I heard Sun on the radio. There’s something a little bit different about Sun that caught my ear and before I recognised Alex Trimble’s distincitve light Northern twang, I made a mental note to look up who sang this catchy little number, it might be worth seeing if they have an album. Despite feeling a little silly when I realised my mistake,it’s indicitave of how much of a departure this is from their previous output.
Latest Green Day album harks back to the band’s glory days The second album in Green Day‘s current trilogy of releases, ¡Dos! begins with ambient background noise and striking muffled guitar strings before launching into the minutelong opening track, See You Tonight. It’s a quickly forgotten bit that only lasts a couple of seconds, but it sets the tone for what’s to come on the rest of the album.
There are quite a lot of forgettable tracks on ¡Dos! that thankfully fly by unnoticed. Ashley shines in parts, but runs of out of gas half way through, to finish on a whimper and fades away.
In contrast to the teenage anthems that filled ¡Uno! the first album of the trilogy,on ¡Dos! the band get back to the retrorock that served them so well in the past and the record is filled with moving bass lines and catchy melodies.
The final song of the albums thirteen tracks is a Billie Joe Armstrong solo number. Called Amy, it’s a tribute to Amy Winehouse and paints the image of a woman misunderstood, out of time and place, revolving around the chorus,“Amy don’t you go / I want you around / singin’, wow please don’t go / do you want to be a friend of mine?”
Not that ¡Dos! is rocket science. It's just way more impressive than the dull sounds of ¡Uno! Songs such as Wild One are immediately hummable, basic rock delivered well. Armstrong's guitar solo is loose and wobbly, and the moans of "... wild one" glow in the background.
It’s not a great album, but it’s fun and kind of reminds what Green Day used to be. ¡Dos! provides hope that the ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tre! series may end well, largely thanks to the record’s strongest tracks like Stray Heart, Wild One and Lazy Bone, which propels the listener back to the era of Dookie and
Nimrod. The maddest track on the album is Nightlife a funky, rap track with reggae guitar and a funky bassline. It’s definitely one of the weirdest songs the band has ever recorded.Green Day does Rap!
Sun starts gently with Trimble crooning over piano but bursts into a memorable riff, catchy chorus and horns blasting rhythmically in the background. It’s quite a summery track, which easily gets stuck in your head. The whole album was produced by Jacknife Lee, who has previously worked with U2, REM and Snow Patrol. Whether it’s Lee’s influence or a natural progression, I love the direction Two Door Cinema Club are moving.

Microsoft straps a tablet operating system to Windows 8. Should enthusiasts make the big upgrade? Windows 8 is not a want, it’s a necessity. Not for you, the consumer. For Microsoft. Microsoft’s decision—and need—to unify a single user experience across its entire product line is the real reason why Windows 8 looks and feels like a tablet operating system slapped on top of Windows 7 (with a few tweaks here and there). Users are given no way around it— Microsoft has made sure of that fact. And, in many ways, there’s no way around it for Microsoft, either. The company has decided that users cannot have dissimilar Windows experiences across desktops, tablets, smartphones,or any other kooky gadgets on the horizon, but refuses (or can’t) cut the cord of the traditional desktop experience just yet. Windows 8 is the natural, necessary hybrid—the last time you’re likely to see the “core” Windows experience of the last decade mashed together with the multicolored, touch-sensitive,“Metro”boxes of the future.A word on that: While Microsoft has elected to not call the tablet-ized portion of Windows 8’s user interface Metro—it’s now just called “Windows 8,” we think— we’ll keep using the old nomenclature just to make this review easier to process.
We never thought we’d type the words,“Microsoft has made it easy to install Windows,”but there you have it.Your first introduction into Microsoft’s latest iteration of Windows comes from the previously laborious process of blanking your hard drive and playing the company’s equivalent of 20 questions to install an OS. When Windows 8 says,“Your PC will be ready in just a moment,” it’s not kidding. This is the speediest, most annoyance-free OS installation we’ve ever experienced. Up pops Metro, the tiled-box screen that’s easily Windows 8’s most controversial feature. To discuss the strengths, weaknesses, and intricacies of Metro alone could eat up an entire multipage review. So we’ll lead with the biggie: At its core, Metro feels… undone. To put it another way, Microsoft’s treatment of its tiles,Metro’s interactions with the “normal” half of Windows 8, and the lack of customization present in this Hyde to Windows 7’s Jekyll does a disservice to those who want anything beyond an operating system set in “easy mode.” It’s possible to think of Metro as simply a start menu— which it basically is, given that Microsoft has killed the traditional Start Menu in Windows 8’s desktop mode. Just ignore all the live tiles and downloadable apps and use the blocky UI as a souped-up entry to your desktop. The single-app, full-screen Metro environment takes some getting used to. Truly, your capacity to enjoy Microsoft’s tablet treatment depends on the app: The People app is as pointless as it is cluttered.Other apps, like Weather and Maps, deliver a compelling experience within Metro. Games—and the downloadable Xbox Smartglass app—finally tie together one’s PC and one’s Xbox 360 in a better, but not ideal, fashion.News, though still annoyingly stuck to a horizontal plane, looks as wonderful as its companion app Sports.
Mail, however, is downright laughable—especially when free alternatives like Mozilla’s Thunderbird, the web-based Gmail,or Microsoft’s own Outlook application blow its lackluster capabilities out of the water. The strength of Windows’ apps—both third-party and Microsoft-driven—are going to be the make-or-break elements for Metro. At launch, and especially on a single-screen setup, they are more novelty than necessity. Considering that a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium costs over €90, we think it’s completely fitting that a standard Windows 8 upgrade costs €30: Metro’s worth can be counted on one hand for a typical desktop user, but the improvements found across the “Windows 7” version of the OS are certainly worth paying for.

The year's most anticipated shooter is back and does not disappoint. You play mainly as Alex Mason and his son David Mason. You jump between time zones of the 1970's and 80's as Alex, and as David you play in the year 2025. I wasn't expecting much with this title, just another generic Call of Duty game but I have to admit I was really surprised. It's good, the changing story kept me interested in it. For the first time ever you are given more control over what way the story changes. There aren’t big changes in the game but for the CODseries it's a massive step in the right direction. In key points throughout the game you get to decide and sometimes I was conflicted about what to do, do I kill this person or let them go?A lot of the time the good guy in me won and wouldn't let me pull the trigger to kill but just to injure. Also if I failed some objectives other missions would open up that would give me another chance to fix what I messed up. Another massive change to the game that I really loved was that you got to choose what weapon loadout you get.I always wanted this feature in COD and I felt it really did add to it.You unlock more weapons the more you play and objectives you complete. The multiplayer has also changed for the better. If you're not one of those cyber robot warriors who just murder everyone else on CODmultiplayer you'll be happy to know that there is now a league where you are pitted against people of your own skill level.
The zombie mode has been improved and now offers a storyline instead of just trying to stay alive for as long as you can. This makes the game far more interesting and gives you something more to fight for.You can now play with up to eight other people online and up to four players offline. For me Black Ops 2was a surprise because it stepped away from the railroad gameplay and let you have more choice over it all.If Call of Duty sticks to this they will have a future instead of people refusing to continue to buy their new titles. The Skoda Rapid is aimed at family motorists looking for a quality car at an affordable price. Sitting between the Fabia and Octavia in the brand's line-up, it is much closer in size to the larger of those two cars; in fact, it's 30cm longer than a Volkswagen Golf. What might also surprise you is that, although the Rapid looks like a saloon, it's actually a hatchback, with the emphasis on space as much as it is on low prices. There are four petrol engines to choose from: a 1.2 with 74bhp, a turbocharged 1.2 with 85bhp or 104bhp, plus a 120bhp turbocharged 1.4. The only diesel engine at launch is a 104bhp 1.6 TDI. Whichever engine is under the bonnet, the Rapid feels reasonably sure-footed, but it doesn't have the agility of a Ford Focus or VW Golf – hardly surprising given that it's a considerably bigger car.The back end can feel rather light under hard braking and the Rapid is reluctant to turn into tight corners. The front tyres squeal surprisingly early, too, but body roll is well controlled. The downside is that this control has been achieved by relatively firm suspension settings, and the ride on Irish roads is a little unsettled. Still, the light steering and good visibility to the side and front (if not the rear, where the high bootlid restricts your
view) make it easy to manoeuvre, and the Rapid sits securely on the motorway.Only the relatively large amount of wind noise disturbs your otherwise calm progress. It's inside where Skoda's cost-conscious development is most obvious – the simple appearance and back-to-basics nature of the cabin see to that. However, what the cabin also demonstrates is that there's a difference between being cost-conscious and feeling cheap, because – despite the wide use of hard black plastic, occasionally flimsy/flexible materials and odds and sods from other VW Group models – the last thing the Rapid looks and feels is cheap. In fact,if you avoid the all-black interior and choose some contrasting colours on the dashboard and doors, the cabin is a smart, classy space. There's certainly no faulting the layout of the controls, the amount of stowage up front or the fine driving position, which is achieved by combining a reach- and rake-adjustable steering wheel with generous head- and legroom.
Prices for the Skoda Rapid start from €15,995 and the new model is available to test drive at your local dealer.

Brother and sister win JumpStart 2012 with EZY Founded by brother and sister Deirdre Cogan and Thomas Carpenter, EZY Technology Innovations has won the JumpStart 2012 competition, held by the Learning and Innovation Centre at the Institute ofTechnology Blanchardstown. Deirdre is a qualified accountant with over ten year’s industry experience and Thomas is a machine inventor with 20 years’ industry experience. The siblings set up EZY in 2010 to research, develop, manufacture and bring new products to the agricultural machinery market place.
Spotify Launced in Ireland Spotify, the fabled Swedish music streaming service that we've been hearing such good things about for the last few years, is now finally available in Ireland. The service offers digitally restricted streaming of selected music from a range of major and independent record labels, including Sony,EMI, Warner Music Group and Universal. In essence it gives you "on demand" access to over 18 million songs. The service comes in three packages: Free, "Premium" and "Unlimited". These range from being able to listen to 10 hours a month, on your computer, to unlimited streaming of music, with no advertisements and being able to listen on your mobile phone. Founded in 2006 by Stockholm native Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon (pictured above), Spotify was recently valued at $3bn (€2.3bn), the Wall Street Journal reported. Last year it raised $100m from venture capitalists and is now raising a further $100m from several investors, including the investment bank Goldman Sachs.
It claims 15 million active users worldwide and four million paid subscribers and has been praised by bands, including our own U2, for finding a way to provide free music to users while at the same time, generating income for artists who have lost out immeasurably since Napster began offering shared music for free more than a decade ago. Thus far in the UK, where Spotify has been available for four years, it has not impacted on advertising at other music services such as commercial radio. Spotify, which claims it has created its own market, says it had no immediate plans to locate any staff here in Ireland. Eircom offers a similar free service to it broadband customers through the Eircom Music hub, while French based service Deezer has 15 million tracks to offer users.
The EZY Crop non-tipping trailer and the EZY Fill bulk filler have already been developed and the pair presented both at JumpStart. A member of the judging panel Insomnia chief Bobby Kerr said:“I was really excited about EZY. This was about a new business developing innovative products in agriculture and manufacturing, two things that Ireland desperately needs. “The quality of this year’s finalists was very impressive and diverse. From online music to farm machinery,anti-terrorist technology to employment software and making secure payments to the families of our non national community, the quality of the applicants was first rate.” Willstream Labs, set up in 2011 by Andrew Considine, won a special runner up prize. An innovative alternative to money transfers, it enables migrants around the world to take control of their finances and remittances, connecting them directly to businesses in the emerging markets. The other shortlist companies were Chillicam, Cypro Software, Jamworld Technologies, and uTRAC. The JumpStart 2012 prize, worth over €25,000, includes €5,000 in cash for the winning company plus the cost of the incubation space for 12 months as well as mentoring support.

Facebook offering sales tracking tool Facebook wants more credit for making online cash registers ring. Facebook will begin rolling out today a new tool which will allow online retailers to track purchases by members of the social network who have viewed their ads. The tool is the latest of the new advertising features Facebook is offering to convince marketers that steering advertising dollars to the company will deliver a payoff. Facebook, with roughly 1 billion users, has faced a tough reception on Wall Street amid concerns about its slowing revenue growth.

The original vampire, but was he the best? I’ve been meaning to read more of the classics and have recently discovered Project Gutenburg which offers over 40,000 free ebooks.Have a look at www.gutenberg.org for more details. Most of their titles have gone out of copyright, which is why they can offer them free. I started reading Dracula during Halloween week, after seeing all the posters for the inaugural Bram Stoker festival that took place in Dublin from the 26th - 28th October. There were walking tours, literary workshops and Stoker-themed theatre.Since I’ve now read the book it’s all based upon, I’m sorry I missed all the fun. While Dracula seemed a particularly relevant read during the Halloween season, it’s an iconic gothic novel that can be read at any time of year. It’s a very old book, having been written in 1897 and I’ve been aware of it most of my adult life but had never read it. Bram Stoker didn’t invent the vampire but he defined its modern form and his Count Dracula became a touchstone for all future myths and legends of blood sucking monsters in popular culture. In fact, with over 170 versions to date, Dracula has been the subject of more films than any other fictional character. Before writing Dracula, Stoker met Ármin Vámbéry who was a Hungarian writer and traveler.Dracula likely emerged from Vámbéry's dark stories of the Carpathian mountains. Stoker then spent several years researching European folklore and mythological stories of vampires. I loved Buffy The Vampire Slayer when I was a teenager and am quite partial to True Blood these days, so I was more than familiar with the concept of vampires and the lore that surrounds them. All the usual tropes are in evidence; vampires suck the blood of innocents in order to sustain themselves, but also to gain mastery over their unsuspecting victims. They hate garlic and are repelled by holy water, crucifixes and the Eucharistic host. The only way to kill Count Dracula is with a stake through the heart. He is strongest at night, though in the novel he isn’t killed by sunlight, just weakened and unable to change into his other forms of a bat, a dog and even mist. The novel is told in epistolary format, which is a series of letters, diary entries, and ships’ logs entries. As the story progresses, all the characters are reading each others entries and are working together to try and defeat the Count.
The tale begins with Jonathan Harker, a newly qualified English solicitor, journeying by train and carriage from England to Count Dracula's crumbling, remote castle (situated in the Carpathian Mountains on the border of Transylvania,Bukovina, and Moldavia). The purpose of his mission is to provide legal support to Dracula, who wants to relocate to London. Jonathan is held hostage in the castle after he realises the nature of the Count, so we are aware of what Dracula is from quite early on. The rest of the story traces Dracula’s passage to England and how it impinges on the lives of two English women, Lucy Westerna and Mina Murray that he comes into contact with on the way to London.Mina is Jonathan’s betrothed and the other 3 main characters,Seward,Morris and Lord Godalmin) are all in love with Lucy. Once it becomes clear that the group is up against something out of the ordinary and possibly supernatural, Dr Seward calls in his old teacher Professor Abraham Van Helsing from Amsterdam. Van Helsing’s sections are intentionally written with clumsy grammar and some peculiar turns of phrase, which I suppose adds to the feeling of otherness that his foreign roots afford him and his theories. This and the long passages dedicated to extolling each others virtues and how close and special they each were to the other got on my nerves by the end of the book. There are two heroines in this book both of whom at first seem like wilting damsels in distress. When Mina shows herself to be useful and competent, it illicts remarks about this being unexpected of the fairer sex. This irked the feminist in me but can probably be attributed to the age in which it was written. The overt religiosity of the Good (Christianity) versus Evil (Godless Undead) also annoyed me but is probably unavoidable, due to the superstitious roots of the legend. Dracula even travels under the pseudonym Count de Ville, and has a natural aversion to anything holy. While well mannered, gentle and innocent ‘ladies’ are reverred in this book, anything outside that is seen as being evil. The way the women were expected to be so pure and angelic, while the vampire women were so wanton and sexual struck me as rather too moralistic for my liking. Stoker was raised a Protestant and clearly believed in the teachings of his church. Parts of the novel dragged rather and I’m not sure I’d bother reading anything else by Stoker but it was an interesting experience to go back to where all this vampire mania started. Dracula has endured for a reason and I’d recommend reading the original to see where it all began.
About The Author Abraham "Bram" Stoker was an Irish novelist , born in 1847 and died in 1912. He was born in Clontarf and attended Trinity College, where he studied Mathematics. He worked as a civil servant in Dublin before marrying Oscar Wilde's former suitor Florence Balcombe in 1878.The Stokers then moved to London where he worked as PA of actor Henry Irving and as business manager of the Lyceum Theatre.

My sister wears red lipstick My skin is very greasy, how can I constantly but doesn't wear any take the shiny look off my makeup? other makeup - she's too pale not to if she wants the lipstick, what's the best foundation to compliment this colour? Alison, Churchtown
Hi Alison, powder, powder, powder. When you have oily skin you definitely have to use a powder over your foundation to set it. Firstly it will last longer and secondly it will take away the shine. There are many powders on the market and some will give you extra coverage while others will just take away your shine. Along with using a powder you can also use product like primers and oil control lotions which will also help to balance the oil production in your skin.
Niamh, Firhouse Hi Sinead, wearing red lipstick can make a real statement and it can look great on every skin, pale or dark it’s just about picking the right colour for your skin tone and the best way to do this is to try them on. When choosing your foundation I would always suggest that you go as close to your natural skin colour as possible (or tan colour). In my opinion if I was wearing a matte red lip stick I would prefer a more full coverage foundation which would give you a flawless look.On the other hand if you are wearing a red lipstick which is more like a wash of colour on the lips then a light coverage foundation could look great.

When you first walk into a garden centre all the plants may look healthy and good quality, but this isn’t always the case. You may end being disappointed by the end result if you choose one that is not so healthy, you may also bring some unwanted diseases back to your other garden plants and your soil.So you need to take a few steps to help make sure the plants you buy are healthy and just right for putting in your garden. The first thing you should do is examine the overall quality of the garden centre or nursery. Are all the plants being well cared for and healthy? Do the staff understand how to care for the plants? Will they be able to give you proper advice for their care and up-keep? All of these things will help you find out if it is a good place to buy your plants from. Take a look at the foliage of the plants for sale,if you find a plant you are intent on buying, make sure the leaves are green and shiny. If a lot of leaves are yellowing or wilting, it would be best to leave it where it is. These plants may not be diseased but the wilting and yellow colour may be a sign that the plant is stressed, but if you have good gardening skills, you might take a chance if it is for sale for a very good price. Check the plants for any signs of insects and diseases, check the top and underside of the leaves, and the compost in the pot. If you see any darkened areas spots or holes the plant may be infected.A sticky feeling on the leaves or on the soil can be from aphids.
Look out for Vine Weevil, the Vine Weevil is a pest of many garden plants. All vine weevils are female and each can lay up to 1,000 eggs during the summer. The larvae are stout, creamy white, legless grubs with brown heads;their bodies are slightly curved and up to 10mm long. They feed on the roots of many plants and the tubers of plants such as cyclamen and begonia. Plants growing in pots, window boxes or other containers are particularly at risk and may be killed during autumn-spring. The adult weevil is black with fused wing covers, and is unable to fly. Adults feed at night on the outer edges of leaves, causing the leaves to have a notched margin.Grubs live below the soil surface, and feed on the roots of plants, shrubs and trees. The grubs may kill the roots of almost any young plant in a container. They are especially fond of primulas and cyclamen. Look at the overall shape. A compact plant that is full and has multiple stems is usually better than a leggy plant. In fact a leggy plant can often be a sign that the plant has not been getting enough light and if so it will grow to be thin and weak and will break easily. It is most important not to buy root bound plants whenever possible as being root bound is stressful on the plant and your pocket.Of course it is hard to tell if a plant is root bound without looking inside a pot, but you can look
for roots growing out of the bottom of the pot or roots that have grown to the top of the pot. Both are definite signs that the plant is root bound. On the other hand you may find a plant that easily lifts out of the pot and has no signs of roots. This may point out that the plant was just recently potted up so maybe buy another one instead. The stem of the plant is another essential area to check. If the plant you are looking at is thick or woody, check for cracks or scars from previous breaks. Prior damage to the stems may still cause problems later so if damaged best left alone. You should look for weeds growing in the pot with the plant you want to buy. If you see weeds in the pot they are a sure sign that the plant has been neglected by the grower. It also can be weak and unhealthy and you also do not want to bring new weeds home with you when you buy new plants.

Toning As Opposed To Losing Weight Toning exercises are physical exercises that are used with the aim of developing a physique with a large emphasis on musculature. In this context, the term toned implies leanness in the body (low levels of body fat), noticeable muscle definition and shape, but not significant muscle size ("bulk"). Weight loss, in the context of medicine, health or physical fitness, is a reduction of the total body mass, due to a mean loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue and/or lean mass, namely bones mineral deposits, muscle, tendon and other connective tissue. Thanks Wikipedia So I’m going to cut to the chase here, most of us humans want to carry less fat around and we get this extra fat simple through eating the wrong foods amongst other things. And for those of you trying to tone up which means reduce body fat which is what most of us want here’s a few tips on how not to do it; 1. Eat a Vegan/vegetarian Diet – If you don’t want to eat any meat, your body will just eat you instead. And you can end up ‘skinny fat’ 2. Do lots of cardio – Training your body to be catabolic, breaking down muscle and to store fat is great if you want that “I used to be 30 stone until I got sick” look. 3. Go on a low calorie starvation diet – It’s like paying for the experience of a prison camp without making any new undesirable friends.
4. Join weight watchers/slimming world – Obviously the only point these people haven’t gotten is that if you want to be healthy you should eat a healthy diet and exercise. Is there an app for that? 5. Take a spin class – Did you know spinning classes actually increase lower body fat. Do enough of them and you might slim your waist after you have completely fried your adrenals, but by then you will be sports some major cottage cheese thighs. 6. Never pick up a weight ever – I’m serious, it will make you so huge you will have to walk sideways through the Square. Ok not really, but you know that age Old Testament, if you don’t use it you lose it. Well it’s pretty accurate when it comes to muscle tissue. 7. Skip meals – Skipping meals is like training for fat storage. The more you go without proper nutrition the more you tell your body to store fat for these long breaks. 8. Eat lots of Gluten/Grains – Nothing says lose muscle and store fat like a highly inflammatory food that depletes your body of vital nutrients and damages your digestive tract making it harder for you to get nutrients from the rest of your diet. Well there you have it, lose weight and get Skinny Fat or Eat right, lift weights, skip the Cardio, reduce body fat AKA Tone Up!
