Hi Everyone, You’re all very welcome to our Christmas Edition of InTallaght Magazine. I hope everyone is in great form and looking forward to Christmas. I also hope that you really enjoy this edition, our last of 2012. In this issue we have four interviews for you with the first being with the cast of Tallafornia.We met up with them for a chat about their up and coming second series and what they would do to sort out the nations’ economy. Next up we have Johnny Ward, a young actor from Tallaght who will be familiar to a lot you for his TV work.Johnny stars in a newly released Irish movie called Dollhouse and recently acted opposite Oscar winner Sean Penn. After this is an interview with local comedian Gar Murran. Gar is a rising star in comedy circles and we chat with him about his career as a standup and the people that inspired him. The last, but by no means least, interview we have is with new Shamrock Rovers manager Trevor Croly. Following his appointment last month Trevor is in charge of bringing the glory days back to Tallaght Stadium and he spoke with us about his football philosophy and what it means to be the manager of Irelands most successful football team. As well as all this we have, as usual, The Square Magazine,which features all the latest news from the centre including details on their “12 Days Of Christmas” events, which kicked off yesterday Thursday 13th December.

Grant Aid for Local Clubs Over 506k was allocated to local clubs in the latest round of grants awarded in the Sports Capital Programme, which were announced by Minister Michael Ring on 2nd December. Tymon Bawn Community Centre in Aylesbury was the biggest recipients with a massive €278,907 awarded to the community centre which was built in 1980 and caters for 80,000 people in the surrounding area.Gerry Higgins who is chairperson of the Tymon Bawn Community Association said the three-person board will be meeting in the next couple of weeks to discuss how the funding will be allocated. Newtown Rangers received €108,000,the Ballymana outfit who field 6 teams including their senior team who play in the Leinster Senior League, plan to develop an All Weather training facility. Spokesman Kevin McGrath said that in the last number of years they had to train outside the club and hopefully they can now put those wasted resources into developing the club further! St Judes GAA club rounded of a great weekend after their U-21 Hurlers won the County Championship by beating Ballyboden St Endas, with the news that they had been awarded €85,109. PRO Fergus McNally explained that the money has been earmarked for essential maintenance works on the clubhouse. He said “We field over 50 teams and there is obvious wear and tear on the facility, this funding will ensure that we can make these repairs and continue to develop our club” Other clubs to benefit were Tallaght Swim Team (€2,134) Faughs GAA (40,000) Tallaght RFC (23,018) Tallaght Rockets Volleyball (€4,500) and Tallaght Athletic Club (€25,000)

Thomas Davis win All Ireland Crown Thomas Davis won the Tesco All Ireland Junior Championship on the 1st of December by beating Boherbue of Cork in Birr on a score line of 1-12 to 0-07. Ciara McGuigan was the star of the show and 4 of her 5 points were scored from play. Selector Niall Kelly believes that this victory will do a lot for the development Ladies game within the club, as it is the first time they have won an Ireland crown in the Ladies game. A healthy crowd made the journey to the midlands and were rewarded with a fine team display and they brought the cup back to the Kiltipper Road were the celebrations continued well into the night!

Introducing Rugby To Tallaght’s Under-12s TALLAGHT Rugby Club was set up in 2002 as part of the “Tallaght Project”,an IRFU initiative designed to introduce rugby in non-traditional areas. It initially started running underage teams and focused on introducing the game into schools in the area. In 2006 it set up their first senior team and since then they have gone from strength to strength. This season they have have two senior men’s teams that compete in the Leinster League Division 3 and in the Metro J5 league. They also have a women’s team in their second season and they compete in the Leinster League division 4. This season Tallaght have started an under-12s joint boys and girls team.They train on Sunday mornings at eleven o’clock in Tymon Park. Mairead Hayden is the youth development officer and she, Phil Preston and Alan Bernes are doing the coaching. Hayden is very happy with the development of the team so far.

“We started it in July and we’ve been getting a great reaction from the local community. The boys and girls are really taking to it and they played a game of tag against Clondalkin at half-time in the Leinster-Gloucester match in Tallaght stadium. That was a great experience for them and we were lucky enough to meet some of the Leinster stars like Jonny Sexton and Gordon D’Arcy. They’ve been working on their tackling to prepare for their first full contact match.” Tallaght president Gregg Behan praised the work of Hayden and the coaches.“While we’re always delighted to welcome new players into the club from wherever they come from, it’s vital for the future of the club that we start to develop the next generation of players ourselves. We’re very grateful to Mairead and the other coaches who have given up their Sunday mornings to train the young boys and girls and we’re really hopeful that the kids become a big part of the club’s future.” Tallaght Rugby Club is a community club and everyone is welcome to get involved whether as a player,coach or as a supporter.Everyone is welcome to come down to training,even if they have never played before. The men’s team train in Ballymana Lane in Kiltipper on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the women’s team train on Mondays and Wednesdays.The youths training on Sunday alternates between Tymon Park (near the Basketball Arena) and Ballymana Lane. Tallaght’s commitment to providing public facilities and services for people with disability has been recognized by the European Commission ON MONDAY December 3 the Access City Award 2013 winner was announced at a ceremony in Brussels during the European Day of Persons with Disabilities Conference. Tallaght was among the 7 cities in the running for the award which recognises and celebrates cities with over 50,000 inhabitants which take exemplary initiatives to improve accessibility in the urban environment. After a pre-selection at national level, a European Jury composed of experts in accessibility and representatives of the European Commission and the European Disability Forum selected one overall winner, two finalist "runnersup" and four special mentions.

In the presence of Vice-President of the European Commission Viviane Reding and Vice-President of the European Disability Forum Erzsebet Földesi it was announced that Berlin was the overall winner. The two finalist "runners-up" were Nantes (France) and Stockholm (Sweden). Tallaght was awarded a special mention by the The European Jury for the range of innovative services to improve the quality of life of its citizens with disabilities, including older people. Examples include a 48-hour repair service for streets and pavements, information services, accessible pedestrian walkways, accessible recycling facilities, accessible libraries and books available in different formats for the visually impaired. Selina Bonnie, who is the Disability Liason/Access and Equality Officer with South Dublin County Council, said the award was a wonderful acknowledgment for the dedication the SDCC has to access and inclusion. "South Dublin County Council is strongly dedicated to providing an accessible environment for all disabled people and we constantly strive to ensure that facilities and services within Tallaght and the wider County are universally accessible.

“For this work to be recognised by the European Commission, and the European Disability Forum is a wonderful testament to the strong commitment to access and inclusion that exists within South Dublin County” Europe's population,including 80 million people with a mild to severe disability,is concentrated in cities and urban areas. Moreover, Europeans are steadily ageing – which means that more and more of us suffer from reduced mobility. In this context, accessibility has important social and economic benefits.

The Tallafornia crew returned to our screens once again last Sunday (December 9) for a preview episode of the 2nd series, which will kick off in the New Year. InTallaght magazine met up with Cormac, Kelly, Phil, Nikita, Natalie and new guy Marc to talk about the new show,the budget and how they would solve the country’s current economic crisis…

Was there much fighting among you guys this time round? Everyone (at the same time): Oh there was loads of that! Phil: Lads against the girls.

So you’re all on good terms at the moment? Cormac: I hate them all equally. Marc: I loved it. I went in not knowing anyone, I genuinely hadn’t seen the show before.

What can viewers expect from What did the rest of the group think of Marc seeing as he the new show? was the new guy? Phil: It’s 10 times better than the 1st season, it’s like a completely different show we’re all a year older, more mature, a little bit wilder and even crazier!

Kelly: People will get really sucked in. They’ll like/dislike people for different reasons. I think it’ll be a lot more exciting. Last year people only got a taster.There’s also going to be a lot more drama. Nikita: A LOT more drama! A lot more bitchiness and a lot more backstabbing! Natalie: Yeah nobody is afraid to speak their mind this time round. Cormac: Plus there’s a much better backdrop, it’s in a better location. Marc: I’m very shy, I’ve got a problem with not taking my clothes off!

Natalie: When we first met him he was bollock naked coming out of the pool.We weren’t expecting that! Nikita:We were loving it though Natalie. Natalie: Oh yeah! Marc: You can’t get on with everyone, every day of the week. I’ve ruffled a few feathers yeah but that’s what I do,I aim to get attention.It’s my goal in life,to get as much attention as possible and I’m doing alright so far.

Do you all want to stay working in TV? Nikita: Yes! I’ve been doing acting lessons in Clondalkin, I’d love to stay involved. Kelly: I’ve been modeling and I have a few other plans. Marc: I want to be Walter White out of Breaking Bad. I do it all for attention, not money. Officially I’d do it for free.

Phil:(Pointing at Marc) I thought he was acting all the time.

What advice would you have for anyone thinking of getting involved in reality TV? Cormac: don’t do it!

Do any of you watch other reality shows? Nikita and Natalie: Oh yeah, we love reality TV, Geordie Shore, TOWIE… Cormac: Geordie Shore is crap at the moment,who wants to see Gaz pulling birds,it’s f***in’ boring!

Marc: It is the same kind of thing, I know a lot of the cast of Geordie Shore and they’re alright.

Natalie: I love them all

Do you all socialise together outside the show? Cormac: I’ve never been out with any of them outside the show.Actually I’ve been out with Dave for the first time last night. Phil: I wouldn’t be caught dead with any of them! Nikita: Just because you live with someone doesn’t mean you have to hang out with them all the time.

Would any of you consider a spin off show? Marc: (Pointing at Natalie and Nikita) They could be on a show called Dumb and Dumber!

I believe the house you stayed in in Santa Ponsa was fairly cool? Cormac: The house was fantastic, it was great bringing people back there. Phil: Me and Nikita wouldn’t be great swimmers and we both nearly died in the pool. She was laughing while she was dying!

What do you guys think of the state of Ireland at the moment? Marc: Cormac for Taoiseach. If Cormac was Taoiseach we’d all be rich! Cormac: It’s beyond repair. Burn the bond holders f**k them and get the f**k out of Europe. Kelly: And give everyone yachts! Nikita: if they just start using the fiscal policy, that’s how’ll we’ll get out of it.

What did you think of the budget? Nikita: It was a load of f***in’ bollocks! Our country believes in making the rich richer and the poor poorer.There’s people in the country that can barely survive and they’re taking away some of their benefits,yet they won’t touch the rich, because they’re afraid it’ll be discrimination if they go after people on a certain salary. Cormac: They’re making the poor pay for the mistakes of the rich. All government wages should be totally cut, they should pay them 40k so then you’d just get people in the Dail who are interested in making the country better and not in getting a big 2 million pension. It’s a game of monopoly for the rich. Phil: This is supposed to be Tallafornina we’re talking about! Cormac: Imagine this conversation with a couple of bottles of vodka thrown in, that’s what Season 2 is like!

You recently appeared in a film with Sean Penn, could you tell us about that? The film is called This Must Be the Place and I got to act opposite him for a scene. He had the lead role and before I got the part the director wanted to know would I be intimidated acting opposite Sean Penn and I said“No”! Even though I was only involved for a short time it was an amazing experience.

What was Sean Penn like? On set he kept himself to himself, he was very quiet.Then at the wrap party he came over to chat to my Dad and myself and he was a lovely, lovely man.

Johnny Ward is a 25-year-old actor from Greenhills in Tallaght with a very impressive résumé. He stars as the male lead in the new Kirsten Sheridan film “Doll House” which was released last week. As well as his movie work he has also done theatre, TV, music and starred in numerous high profile ad campaigns. InTallaght Magazine caught up with this busy young man to chat about his new film and his career.

Is it true you auditioned for Love/Hate? Yes, I went for a part in it and it was between me and one other actor. Unfortunately I didn’t get the part but it worked out ok because Kirstin Sheridan (director of Dollhouse) saw my audition tape and I ended up getting a part in Dollhouse.

Tell us about Dollhouse. It’s about 5 teens that break into a Southside house and have a mad night. I got cast as the leader of the gang.It was a great film to be involved with; they sent us away for a week on our own for character building, then Kirsten did rehersal improv and we came up with ideas.75% of the acting is improv.The film came out in Ireland last Thursday (December 7).

So Johnny how did you get into acting?

What has been the reaction to the movie so far?

My mother and father got me into it at aged 3. I used to go for lessons with Mary Birchall on the Greenhills Road, speech and drama lessons there. Along with my sisters Maureen and Susan, it’s just been something I’ve always done.

It’s been getting great reviews.It has been shown at the Ukraine,Berlin and South by Southwest film festivals.We managed to win an award at the Odessa Film Festival in Ukraine.(The entire cast won the Best Actors category.)

Tell us a bit about your career to date?

You’ve done both singing and acting, which is your favorite?

Well as I said I started out fairly young in the industry and it’s all I’ve ever really done and all I’ve ever wanted to do.I got my first big break doing Les Miserables with Colm Wilkinson in 1999 in the Point. Since that I’ve done films, tv programmes, theatre, musicals. I’m also a singer and I teach as well.

Acting.It’s definitely my strongest point and I love the fact that you can pretend to be someone else.I’ve gone from one extreme to the other in acting, from playing someone in a wheelchair to a junkie.When you’re singing it’s still you.With acting you can do so many different things.

Who are your heroes? Denzel Washington is a big influence.Muhammad Ali.Musically it would be my uncle Michael. My sister Maureen would also be a hero.

Readers may recognize you from some TV ad campaigns that are currently running? Yes I’ve done a few adverts;I’m in the current Lyons Tea and McDonalds ads.I loved being involved with both.For the Lyons one we got brought out to Ukraine to film it,it was like a holiday actually! And for the McDonalds one we got to hang out with Eamon Dunphy, which was great fun!

Where would like to be career wise in 5 years? I’d like to be doing exactly what I’m doing now, teaching, working in film and theatre.

What advice would you have for young aspiring actors? If you go for an audition and don’t get the part it doesn’t mean you’re a crap actor. You just might not have the right look for the part.Don’t despair because somebody may see something in your audition that they need in the future. I got two jobs later on from auditions where I missed out.You don’t know what might happen.

What is your favorite film? I have two, Edward Scissorhands made a big impression on me and Homeward Bound, which is the only film that can make me cry and I don’t even know why!

You were saying earlier, you also teach? Yes I’m a drama and singing teacher at Talented Kids Performing Arts School and Agency.The school,which is based in Clondalkin,Naas and Kilcullen caters from children from age 3 upwards to adults. I love teaching, there’s so much talent in Ireland.

Finally I believe you are also going to be busy throughout the panto season? Yes I am, I’m currently playing Buttons in Cinderella in the Gaiety.We started at the beginning of this month and it’s due to run until January 13.

Gar Murran is an award winning stand up comedian from Tallaght. In 2006 he won the Bulmer’s Comedy Competition. He was a finalist in the Edinburgh Festival's So You Think You're Funny competition in 2007. He currently MC's at The Laughter Lounge and performs regularly in Ireland and England. InTallaght Magazine caught up with him for a chat.

Where in Tallaght are you from?

What current comedians do you like? Fred Cook,Willie White, Eric Lalor.A trio called Foil Arms and Hogg, they’re brilliant and they’re going to be massive. I also really like Bernard O’Shea and Colm O’Donnell.

What advice would you have for young aspiring comedians? Just go in and try and do your set as good as you can.Try and get 5 minutes of good material and don’t get involved with the crowd or talking to people. You wouldn’t believe how cocky some of the opening acts are. Also enjoy it, it’s meant to be enjoyable! It’s nerve wracking at the time though.

Glenview Lawns, I’ve lived there for over 30 years.

When did you decide you wanted to be a comedian? When I was in school hanging around with my mates and taking the piss. I always loved stand up and making people laugh.

When did you start your comedy career? I did my first gig at 18 years of age at the Battle of The Axe in The Ha’penny Bridge Inn in town. It was a huge culture shock I was standing there staring at people 2 or 3 years older than me, it was terrifying! I went back 6 months later. I took a break mid way through my career for a few years as I thought I should’ve been doing better then I was. I came back to it 6 years ago and it all kicked off.

You were voted the most popular Irish comedian of 2010 by Laughter Lounge

Even though you have years of experience behind you do you still get nervous before performing? I’d still get nervous before gigs but not during them, I’ve done hundreds of them by now. You should be nervous beforehand as going up on stage and doing comedy in front of a crowd is not a natural thing!

Have you done much gigging outside Ireland? Yes I do a lot of shows in England, I was in Newcastle last weekend, I’ve done the Leeds Festival, the Glee Clubs, it’s a different experience.

If you could work with any comedian living or dead who would you choose?

Frank Skinner, I grew up watching him, I love him as a stand up, he’s so quick. Dane Cook, not for his films, just his stand up. Brian Regan, I think he’s hilarious, I’d recommend any readers who haven’t heard of him to check out his stuff on YouTube. Billy Connolly, Chris Rock, Stewart Lee and Gerry Seinfeld who has a completely different style.

What is your favorite venue to play? As well as The Laughter Lounge I love The International, there’s a brilliant energy there. I love The Hapenny Bar though it can be a tough room as half the crowd can be tourists who are just passing through.

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened during one of your gigs?

Finally Gar, what can people coming to one of your shows expect?

There’s been so many crazy things happen down the years it’s hard to pick one! In the Laughter Lounge once I was talking to some fella in the crowd and he wouldn’t talk to me, he was totally blanking me.Later on I was chatting to some of his friends and asked them what was the story with him, why was he being so ignorant? They said “He wasn’t being ignorant he’s blind, he couldn’t see you.” I was so embarrassed.The first time I was MCing a gig in England a woman in the crowd had an epileptic fit and toppled over. There’s also been loads of marriage proposals and one woman owned up to having an affair in front of her husband and the whole crowd.

They can expect audience interaction; no matter where you sit we’ll find out something about you.They’ll have a good time and hopefully leave in better form than when they came in. I am sure you are all very busy starting to plan for this wonderful time of year.We have been very busy too making sure that the Centre looks as festive as possible and that we deliver services and events that help you during your visit.We setout this year to create a memorable experience for all of our valued customers at Christmas.It all kicked off with our Santa’s arrival which has been hailed as the“best and biggest ever”.Decorations on the Mall this year consist of a new 22ft tree with over 4000 lights,40 garlands,16 festive trees, over 1000 baubles,300 meters of icicle lights,polar bears,snowmen,teddy bears,a beautiful crib,lots of footprints and snowflakes falling on the atrium sails.The“Ice Grotto”on Level 3 is proving hugely popular and we have received lots of positive comments from everyone who visits keeping Santa very busy.Our“12 days of Christmas”events kick off on Thursday 13th with a fun event everyday in the lead up to the big day.We all have a special memory of visiting Santa as a kid and hopefully we will be that memory for a lot of the children who visit us this year. Christmas is a time to reflect on the past year before we look forward to the new one and what a year 2012 has been. Lots of change has happened this year and we are very proud of the changes we have made to the Centre.Since April, we have opened 16 new stores including IMC, H&M, Carraig Donn and Dealz.We have created 165 new job roles whilst the economy continues to struggle and we have seen a lot of customers return to us. Our partnership with InTallaght magazine has given us a great platform to shout about the changes we have made and the community work we have been supporting.Our sponsorship of Shamrock Rovers has grown into a very strong partnership culminating in them moving their shop into the Centre for Christmas. Although they didn’t have the season they wanted,we have no doubt they will bounce back and have a fantastic 2013 and we are proud to be with them on the journey.We have just launched our new promotional visit movie which you can watch on Facebook or on youtube. The key message is“the changes will bring you back”and that’s what we are striving for. Local 18 year old receives our Community Champion Award for her work for Pieta House Lauren Byrne is the latest recipient of the Squares, Community Champion Award. Lauren who is 18, and from Springfield recently organised a fundraiser in Captain America’s for Pieta House. Inspired by the high rates of Suicide in the area Lauren took it upon herself to do something about it. She persuaded local bands to play for free and through the medium of Facebook rallied the troops to attend. Local celebrities who attended included Shamrock Rovers players and members of the cast of Tallafornia. Through her sports contacts, her father Paul played for Celtic and her brother Kurtis who currently plays for Ross County in the SPL,Lauren garnered some really attractive Sports Memorabilia including signed Celtic and Hibs Jerseys. Raising over €2,500 Lauren is an inspiration to others and displayed great Community Spirit in organizing this event to help others and The Square is delighted to give her this award! Lauren was delighted and surprised to receive the award, and when speaking to InTallaght said “although I didnt organise the fundraiser to receive personal recognition it is nice that the hard work has been rewarded.”

Does X Factor have Christmas Number One All Wrapped Up? Ever since the charts began in 1962 when Elvis Presley gained the top spot with Return to Sender,the Christmas number one has always been a hotly contested race. In times of old such varied hits as Thin Lizzy's Whiskey in the Jar (1972), St Winifred's School Choir's There's No-one Quite Like Grandma (1980) and Zig & Zag's appropriately named The Christmas No. 1 (1990) have all reached the top spot on Christmas Week. Since 2006, when the third series of The X Factor aired, the Christmas number one in Ireland has gone to the winner from that season's edition of The X Factor.Leona Lewis started this trend with A Moment Like This, right up to last year when Little Mix's Cannonball won the accolade. While there have been campaigns to unseat the X Factor winner from Christmas number one,the most succesful only saw The Rubberbandits's Horse Outside reach number two in 2010. The ultimate Christmas classic Fairytale of New York, which was originally number one in 1987, has been re-released for its 25th anniversary. Many hope that it will repeat its previous success.On the other end of the spectrum, an emerging prospect is Let The Snowflakes Fall by Maynooth student Ultan Sherry whose YouTube video has made him a viral sensation.

Murs Delivers A Coherent Collection of Solid Pop Songs Olly Murs' third album starts with soaring stings on Army of Two before breaking into Maroon 5-esque vocals,military drums on the chorus and a catchy bouncy beat on the verses. The strings dip back in at times, and are joined by sporadic horns in the background. Murs sounds American in the same way that The Script do, with a subtle stateside accent when he sings a lot of the songs.Though on What A Buzz a more English accent rears its head in line with his cheeky chappy image. Flo Rida guests on Troublemaker, which reminds me of an early Britney Spears track sung by N'Sync, but with extra cowbell and disco strings. I can imagine this one getting stuck in my head for hours.Loud and Clear takes the tempo down,with a fairly standard love ballad with an easy to sing along to 'Wo-oah-oah-oah-oah' part at the end.

Dear Darlin stays in the downtempo mood until a Lighthouse Family worthy drum beat picks up the pace. Murs can genuinely sing and these songs certainly showcase his very pleasant voice.

This is an album of well crafted pop songs that make the most of Murs' honeyed tones. To be honest, none of the songs particularly stood out when I listened through the album.In Murs' defense,pop isn't a genre I know a lot about, and most of the numbers wouldn't sound out of place on the radio. As with his previous two albums, Murs stated that he wanted to evolve his sound again,this time taking on a more funk led influence from artists such as Jamiroquai and Maroon 5:"I hate saying the music is more‘mature’, because I haven’t changed.But I feel my songwriting is stronger and I knew where I wanted to go as an artist with this album. I’ve tried to make some of the songs anthemic, and I hope it will open me up to a wider audience." In this Murs seems to have succeeded.

Right Place Right Time is an impossibly bouncy and catchy collection of songs that it’s hard to dislike.He isn’t reinventing the wheel but it’s easy to see why Murs has endured after the first flush of X Factor fame has worn off.

There has been some speculation that X Factor’s falling viewership and this year’s season ending a week earlier than usual, might harm James Arthur's chances. With Olly Murs, Bruno Mars, Robbie Williams and Rihanna all in the running, we'll just have to wait and see. I for one would like to see the automatic X Factor Christmas Number One pushed off its throne.

The Sony Vaio Tap 20 is yet another experiment to try and make the most of Windows 8. The family that plays together stays together, as the old adage goes.These days, however, family members seem more interested in playing on their own devices than with each other.Sony hopes to change that with the VAIO Tap 20, the first all-in-one PC to feature an internal battery and a host of family-friendly apps. The idea is that you could transport this Windows 8 device from, say, the kitchen to the living room without having to stay tethered to an outlet. Designed to work with Windows 8, this is among the most compact and stylish all-in-one PCs we've seen,with many features more reminiscent of a tablet than a desktop PC - including a touchscreen and a battery. With its stand folded away, it looks like the world's biggest tablet, measuring 312x504mm and about 20mm thick around the edge. Pulling out the stand requires an extra 100mm of desk space. An accelerometer means that the Tap knows which way round you've positioned it and the stand support the Tap 20 in both landscape and portrait aspects. Continuing the tablet/desktop hybrid theme is that builtin battery, so you can easily move the PC from room-toroom without having to shut it down. The sheer size of its 20in 16:9 screen makes it too unwieldy to easily take out and about with you, but it's great for moving around the house, to use as an office PC one moment, iPlayer in

the kitchen the next, and then onto the coffee table for some family fun. The battery is a typical 3,500mAh laptop battery, and lasted for two hours and 24 minutes in our tests.It's long enough for most movies, a couple of TV episodes or a lengthy bout of browsing or typing. The PC has just two USB ports, but both are USB3. The wireless keyboard and mouse don't require a USB dongle as their receiver is built into the Tap. Both are very small, but we were particularly pleased by how easy we found it accurately touch-type on the keyboard's flat, widelyspaced keys. The computer also has 3.5mm mic and headphone ports, a multi-format memory card reader and Memory Stick HD Duo media,a Gigabit Ethernet port and dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi. Shortcut buttons around the sides of the PC allow you to adjust the volume, lock the display orientation and trigger Sony's integrated help system. There's a Start Screen shortcut button on the front of the Tap, as well as a webcam for video chat. Sony has taken the unusual step of building a set of 2.1 speakers into the PC, including the world's smallest sub-woofer. While the Tap sounds better than most laptops, doing a fine job in games and movies,you'll probably want to plug in external speakers if you're really into your music.Bass tones and high treble notes are well defined, but many mid-range sounds,including vocals and guitars, sound a little muffled.

The processor is a low-power dual-core Intel Ivy Bridge processor that we see in a lot of ultrabooks. It’s capable of running any standard desktop application but heavyduty multi-tasking and tasks such as video transcoding may feel a little slow if you're used to a more powerful desktop PC. There are no graphics inputs or outputs, so you can't connect the PC to a TV or projector and you can't use the screen for a games console or Blu-ray player. This limits the Tap’s multimedia potential somewhat but then simplicity and portability are key here.On the subject of things that have been cut out, there's no DVD or Blu-ray drive either,so if you want to watch movies,you'll have to rely on services such as Netflix.The Sony Vaio Tap 20 is available from PC World for €1,299.99.See instore for more details.

Ford unveils its new design direction with an aggressive looking four-door coupĂŠ that previews the design direction of the next Mondeo. The Ford Evos concept will never go on sale, but it's still a very important vehicle.This concept car,which debuted on Ford's stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show, is designed as a way for the Blue Oval's designers and engineers to showcase future Ford styling and technology trends. Ford says the new global design language previewed by the Evos will appear on a production vehicles launching in 2012 and 2013 including the upcoming new Mondeo. It is essentially an evolution of current styling trends, rather than a dramatic revolutionary change.The headline of the Evos concept is the car's trapezoidal grille, which is positioned high on the front fascia. It will become the "Face of Ford" and appear on all the brand's future car designs.The trapezoidal opening has been previewed on several other Ford cars, including the forthcoming Focus ST and Focus Electric. Extremely narrow lights and mirrors are meant to convey the idea that modern Fords are taut and precise vehicles. The Evos is a four-door fastback design about the same length as but six inches wider than a 2012 Ford Focus hatchback. Four elaborate gull-wing doors rise to admit

BOI launch Pay to Mobile Bank of Ireland is set to become the first bank in Ireland to offer Pay to Mobile where people can transfer cash simply by using their mobile phone number. According to latest industry figures,individual Smartphone adoption in Ireland is now at 43% and predicted to climb to 71% by the end of December 2012. To transfer money, customers must first have downloaded Bank of Ireland's Mobile Banking App. Customers don't need to know the recipients' account number to make a

transfer.Using the mobile banking app they simply select the account that they wish to pay from, and the phone number of the person to whom they are transferring the money, and the amount will be transferred instantly (subject to Bank of Ireland cut-off times). To receive money, customers don't need to be a Mobile Banking App customer but they do have to be a 365 online customer and have registered their account and mobile number for the Pay to Mobile service. "Today's announcement is the latest enhancement we've made in response to changing customer needs and our commitment to offer smarter banking solutions. Firms plea for shoppers to buy Irish ISME has called on the hard pressed Irish consumer to 'think local, think Irish' when shopping this Christmas season. Sky Ireland create 40 new retail jobs Sky today announced that it has increased headcount in its retail store network in Ireland with the creation of 40 new roles.This brings to 100 the number of people directly employed to support its 36 stores. It has also embarked on a review and re-design of its retail estate.The decisions were taken as part of Sky's continuing investment in its Irish operations, people, and products, and to greatly improve the face-to-face experience for customers visiting Sky stores nationwide, it said. The investment in the Sky Retail Store network has seen the number of directly employed staff in the retail team grow from 60 to over 100, including field based staff and head office support,through the creation of the 40 brand new roles. This follows recent commitments by Sky to employ 800 people for its new customer contact centre in Dublin, for which a recruitment drive is currently underway.

Sky has also undertaken a review of its retail estate, which includes locations such as Whitewater Shopping Centre, Newbridge, the Ilac Centre in Dublin, Mahon Point in Cork, and McDonagh Junction in Kilkenny. This involves the installation of a brand new store design in a third of stores over the next four to six months, rolling out to all stores thereafter. TV3 trial paid for content on Player

Using payment partner 'Pay Wizard', viewers can set-up an account which will allow them to rent premium,pre-broadcast shows on 3player to watch on their PCs, laptops and tablets.

TV3 Group has announced that 3player will trial Paid-For Content by giving viewers an opportunity to view the second episode of hit show Tallafornia on 3player, for a fee, ahead of its broadcast date next month.

Commenting on the trial Stephen Grant, Director of Online at TV3 commented:"Tallafornia was the most talked about show of 2012 and as the second series comes to TV3 we are delighted to be able to offer fans of the show the chance to see the second episode on 3player before it is broadcast. Services such as 3player allow us to experiment with how we make our content available and, in this first for Irish broadcasters, we are creating opportunities for viewers to be ahead of the game and see premium content before broadcast."

An exclusive look at the first episode of Tallafornia 2 aired on Sunday December 9 at 11:00pm on TV3.Immediately after the preview, the second episode became available to view for a limited time only on 3player, for a fee of â&#x201A;Ź1.49.

AIB to increase write downs AIB has said it will step up its pace of mortgage writeoffs in 2013, by offering customers who are working with the bank the chance to have some of their debt cancelled. The head of the AIB's arrears unit, Garry Stran, said the bank would begin tackling problem loans "in a more industrialised fashion than seen before". Mr Stran said some 30 per cent of borrowers who have had their mortgages restructured and who are working with the bank, could have some of their debts written off. "Writing off debt where people are doing the very best they can is absolutely appropriate," he said, though he ruled out "wholesale debt forgiveness." He said any loan restructurings would be based on a borrower's ability to pay while letting them keep to a "reasonable" living standard. "Given the scale of the problem,do we really want to be having emotive conversations with people" about TV subscriptions, gym memberships and cigarette habits, he said."No, we don't."

100 new IT jobs for Dublin Up to 100 jobs are to be created at an information technology security company in Dublin. Mandiant is establishing an engineering and security operations centre in the city. The company provides security products to stop advanced attackers who bypass IT security controls. The posts will be in software engineering and security operations. Other jobs will be created in product development roles as well as a number of administrative positions.

The Storm That Ruined Our Christmas (or did it?) The storm had been threatening the day before Christmas Eve. There had been no snow, but there were gale force winds and torrential rains in our rural area between Dublin and Wicklow. The weathermen assured us it would get worse before it got better, so it seemed we weren’t going to be going anywhere over the next two or three days. But who cared? The day after tomorrow would be Christmas so we were all planning on staying in all day anyway, spending one half of the day on our PlayStation and the other half glued to the telly.That, after all, is what Christmas was all about…well, to a fourteen-year-old boy, anyway. My widowed brother in law Tommy arrived on Christmas Eve afternoon with his two teenage sons, fourteen year old Kenneth, and Gerry who was a year older.We couldn’t have possibly known how lucky it was they hadn’t delayed by another half hour or so because a sudden downfall saw a month’s rain fall in the space of about thirty minutes,leaving the roads flooded and impossible to drive through. Tommy and the boys were going to be staying overnight anyway. Now they had no choice. Knowing there wasn’t going to be too much daylight, we decided on having a traditional family Christmas board game, so Kenneth went up to the attic and got Cluedo. It took almost two hours of playing before Uncle Tommy deduced that Reverand Green who used the lead piping on his victim had murdered Doctor Black in the ballroom. It was shortly after supper when the storms caused a power failure. There would be no emergency services for at least two days.No electricity for Christmas Day? No television, no blockbuster movies…no Christmas dinner??!!! This storm had ruined Christmas before it had even begun!

Christmas morning actually started off well, in spite of the depression that lay ahead.The exchanging and unwrapping of gifts went ahead, and there was certainly light enough for the first few hours for us to enjoy a marathon game of Monopoly. The Christmas “dinner” was cold cut sandwiches but it was nowhere near as disastrous as we had feared.We didn’t need electricity to enjoy our sweets and minerals (or, the adults, their wines and beers) and the mince pies were just as nice cold as heated. The Christmas pudding, of course, also had to be eaten cold, but it was still nice and tasty with ready to serve custard poured over it. Dad soon got a nice coal fire going, and as darkness descended down outside there was something… atmospheric…about the blazing flames throwing a homely glow over the living room. When the table was cleared away we all sat around the fire telling stories of Christmases long past, my own being of the Christmas morning I found a fire truck and Lego which Santa had left under my bed. My “fire brigade and Lego” had given me endless hours of fun right through the Christmas holidays. After all the stories had been told, the curtains were drawn and Christmas candles were lit.We were all then treated to some delicious Christmas cake and assorted biscuits,washed down with minerals and beers. Uncle Tommy suggested some carol singing which we all agreed to.We were organised into three sections, first to all sing together as a choir, then the ladies and next the gents. The choir sang traditional carols like Here We Come A Carolling, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and The Holly And

The Ivy.Then we did some ‘pop’ favourites by Slade,Wizard and the Bony M version of Mary’s Boy Child. The girls sang Little Donkey, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and Christmas, Baby Please Come Home.And then it was the turn of the gents. I crowed my way through Here Comes Santa Claus, White Christmas and The Christmas Song, while Kenneth treated us all to Mistletoe and Wine, Blue Christmas and Deck The Halls. Then Uncle Tommy got up to sing, and it has to be said, he sang absolutely beautifully. He started with Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow,and as the fire blazed away behind him, and the storm continued to blow violently outside, the first two lines rang very true indeed…

Oh the weather outside is frightful But the fire is so delightful. Uncle Tommy followed with The First Noel, singing in a beautiful tenor voice. As we all sat around him, transfixed, we all knew with a feeling of pure awe in our hearts, that we were experiencing something special. “The storm that ruined out Christmas?” More like the storm that showed us all what Christmas is

really all about.

TREVOR CROLY was unveiled as the new Shamrock Rovers manager last month after he joined The Hoops from St Pats where he served as assistant manager. A former player with Rovers, he also served as assistant manager under Michael O Neill. InTallaght Magazine caught up with the new man at the helm to discuss his career to date and his plans for next season. Congratulations Trevor on your appointment, what are you most looking forward to about your new job as Shamrock Rovers manager? I’m very excited at the moment and delighted to be back at Rovers as manager.I’m really looking forward to getting out on the training pitch and working with the quality of players that are at the club and that we’ve brought in. There is great potential among them. I can’t wait until the first match, which will be at home against Coleraine (in the Setanta Cup) in February.

What do you think is the most important thing about managing Rovers? There are many important components but the quality of the group of players is vitally important.The players we have inherited, and signed, are really good footballers, they’re all hungry. I can see this from the work they’ve done so far.

What is your football philosophy? You’ve got to win. The other important thing to me is people pay their money to come and watch so they need to be entertained as well.We’ll try and play in the correct manner, to create a successful team with quality players.

Who have been the biggest influences on you? My parents and my family.From a coaching point Noel White,Peader Deane,Jim Maguire, Phil Devereaux, Pat Devlin, Jim McLaughlin, Brian Kerr, Liam Buckley. I’ve been lucky to have worked with so many great people.They’ve all had an influence on me really.

Do you think it will be tough to manage fans expectations after the European run the season before last? Not really.We all have our own responsibility to try and get the most out of the players. There’ll be ups and downs but we’ll be comfy with it.

What would you say to fans that may be worried because

this is your first role as a manger?

League of Ireland remained low?

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I have been an assistant manager and coach for nine years and I have been building my education towards being a manager. I have put a strong backroom staff in place and I feel I can help the club to continue to develop and have success. It’s not the first time I’ve been a manager as I managed the PFAI team last year at the FIFPro Winter Tournament.

Well it’s disappointing but people are free to spend their money however they want.Maybe people don’t realise how good our league is.Remember the day after the Ireland v Germany match, which was a poor game, Sligo and Pats played in what was a title decider and the game was fantastic, much better than the international the day before.

After the way things ended at Rovers in your previous role as assistant manger did you have any second thoughts about going back? Absolutely not no, I took the hand off them!

After making quite a number of new signings in the past month will Rovers be looking to bring any more new faces into the squad? If we can we may be looking to sign a couple but I’m happy with what we have and with the signings we’ve made.

Do you think there are players in What is your best memory in the Airtricity League that are football to date? good enough to play at a higher level? Do you think not being in Europe will help Rovers league campaign? Who was your favourite player when you were young? What teams do you think will be challenging for the title next What do you think would season? improve football in Ireland?

No one memory massively stands out,anything I’ve ever won has been great but the hardship has also been important to me as it serves as an important learning curve.

Yes I do,definitely.Evidence shows there’s a lot of talent in the league.You can see that because of the quality of the clubs that players from our league have moved to, they’re not going to Conference sides.Even this week for example you have Barry McNamee from Derry City moving to Nottingham Forest.There are 1 or 2 in our group that are good enough to make that step up.

It gives you what you want to take out of it, not being in Europe. It can give you freshness but it can also give teams a lift if they get a great result in Europe.They might then take confidence into their league campaign. Hopefully it helps us.

No one player in particular.When I was young I liked the Liverpool teams of the 80’s.

I think if more people came to games it would be great.We all have a responsibility for that. As I was saying earlier it is important that fans are entertained.

What did you think during the summer when 30,000 + Irish football fans made their way to Poland to support the national team yet attendances in the

Hopefully we’ll be one of them. I’m too busy preparing our own team at the moment and looking at our own players to worry about what other teams maybe challenging.All I’m concentrating on right now is how to get the most out of the group of players that we have.

Finally Trevor where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time? I’m happy where I am! I’m very happy to be at Rovers and hopefully 5 years from now I’ll still be here because it’ll mean I’ve been successful.
