I.T.Tallaght supported competition now taking entries Young local software developers can now enter the 2013 Scratch competition that aims to get primary and secondary school students involved in software development by using the Scratch programming language.Scratch was developed at MIT Media Lab as a free software tool to help students create games, animations and stories for the web.
"Scratch gives students practical experience of the skills required for this diverse and growing profession," he said.
The ICS Scratch Competition is sponsored by Lero - the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, and supported by IT Tallaght and IT Sligo. The competition aims to give students an understanding of how software is built and how it works.
Lero's education and outreach officer Clare McInerney said this is the fourth year of the Irish Scratch competition. She said the entries continue to get more impressive every year as more students use Scratch to develop their interest in technology.
Another aim of the competition is to give students a glimpse of possible future careers in the software development sector.
"Scratch allows students to develop creative and critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills as they work collaboratively or individually on Scratch projects," added McInerney.
Jim Friars, CEO of the ICS, said Lero and the society have worked closely for years so that students of all ages can gain 21st-century IT skills. "Over the past number of years the IT field is one of the few to experience employment growth and as time progresses technology will play an even more important role in everyday life.
Lero has developed free Scratch teaching materials for primary and secondary school teachers. At primary level, Scratch is now being taught in more than 700 classrooms.
Teachers can register their interest in the competition online via the ICS.Projects by students must be submitted by 22 March 2013, with the finals being held in May.

Leaigh named Tallaght’s Star Pupil Finalist A young girl from Tallaght has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Vision Express Search for a Star Pupil Competition which took place last November.
The competition was created to drive greater awareness about the importance of eye healthcare in children. The event was run in conjunction with the Irish Professional Photographers Association (IPPA) who set up in store to help the hopefuls strike their best pose.
Five year old Leaigh Moore was selected from 60 other entrants from the Vision Express Store in The Square, Tallaght to join seven other finalists around the country for the overall selection.
The overall winner of the Vision Express Search for a Star Pupil promotion will receive a trip for two adults and two children to Disneyland, Paris and a pair of designer children’s frames from Vision Express.

Commenting on the competition,Sean McDermot, store manager of Vision Express Tallaght said “The calibre of the entrants was outstanding on the day and it made the decision of the judges incredibly difficult.Leaigh really stood out however, and we look forward to hearing the final result in the coming weeks. We also hope that we have highlighted how important it is to take care of your eyes, especially young children,so that they don’t go on to develop problems in later life”. The Vision Express Search for a Star Pupil competition took place on November 2nd and 3rd in 8 stores throughout the country including the Tallaght store. In total almost 500 children entered the competition over the two days.

Tallaght native James Reynolds is a kidney transplant recipient and a member ofTransplant Team Ireland Transplant Team Ireland is organised by the Irish Kidney Association. Colin White, National Transplant & Dialysis Games Manager gave an overview of what they do and what they’re all about: “We have an active and growing sports programme in Ireland which is open to people on dialysis and people who have received solid organ transplants. We are open to newcomers throughout the year. All ages and abilities are welcome with a sense of humour being one of the most important criteria! Our focus is on enjoyment and celebrating life!” For more information on the team, visit their website:
www.transplantteamireland.wordpress.com James, who attended St Mark’s Community School in Tallaght, and received a kidney transplant in 2009 is no stranger to the games having competed in Dublin 2010 European Games and World Games in Gotenburg 2012 as well as The European Transplant & Dialysis Games which were held in Zagreb, Croatia last August and involved more than 300 athletes from 28 countries throughout Europe. Every athlete at the Games had either already received a kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas or bone marrow transplant or was on dialysis. James is organising a fundraiser to raise funds to enable him to compete in South Africa as a member of the Transplant Team Ireland. This would be his 4th Games in a row with the team. He has won 2 bronze medals in previous games and is focused on adding more. James spoke to us about his experience taking part in the Games and his hopes for the future:
“
The support I get from family friends and my local area is amazing, it drives me forward.
It comes around so quickly as Transplant Team Ireland are on the road again! We had a great build up to our departure last year with letters of support from so many different sources. The personal message of support from members of the Irish Olympics team resonated well with our team and we were all ready to perform when we got to Zagreb with a team of 26 athletes and 21 supporters. We were one of the bigger teams at the Games. The team are wonderfully diverse, ranging in age from 18 to 74 years old. As always on our travels we received a warm welcome in Croatia with temperatures regularly hitting over 40 degrees throughout the week. But we kept our cool and pulled off some great results and performances. The team is a family to us all and we always show great support at every venue. The Games experience goes beyond simple sports competitions. The bond between competitors from all countries, and the united desire to express appreciation to organ donors and their families was humbling. It is all well and good for our team to have had a‘great Games’ but that is only half the battle. Once again, team members willingly shared their stories through the media with a view to inspiring others living with organ failure, to show donor families the appreciation there is for the ‘gift of life’ and to encourage the general public to make the commitment to make a difference and carry an organ donor card.
To sum up my abiding memories of our Irish team – smiling faces, lots of laughter, great friendship and a whole heap of ‘Yes We Can!’ The planning for this year’s World Transplant Games in Durban, South Africa is well and truly underway and the team will be all the better if YOU are on board!
”
If you’d like to help James get to South Africa, attend his Fundraiser at St Marks GAA Club, Tallaght on February 2, starting at 8.00pm.There will be live music from The Beer Mats & Pete St. John, as well as a DJ, raffle and spot prizes.Tickets are €10.
Make the greatest possible act of generosity by giving a gift of life. Consider becoming an organ donor now - don't put it off for another day. Get a donor card, sign it and have your next-of-kin sign it. Text DONOR to 50050 to request a donor card now!

W.A.G. is a play written by Gemma Doorly about the wife of a footballer and the footballer’s mistress. Former Fair City actress Gemma Doorly made her directorial debut last year with her play W.A.G starring her former Fair City colleague and good friend Sorcha Furlong.Following its sell-out tour, the play comes to The Civic Theatre on January 31st. Sorcha is best known for playing much loved character Orla Kirwin and Gemma previously played the role of Sarah O’Leary for 10 years before leaving the soap in 2011. InTallaght magazine caught up with Gemma and Sorcha to discuss their move from screen to stage.
So Gemma, you wrote W.A.G. and you also star in it could you tell us what it’s about? It’s set in the lavish surroundings of a sports star’s mansion while he is away, his wife has invited a guest around for a drink and a chat – his mistress.Armed with intimate photos of the mistress and a threat to leak the story to the newspapers - W.A.G is ready to fight for her marriage. It’s 50 minutes of showdown in real time. It’s pretty intense as the wife is losing it.
Is it a comedy? It’s a black comedy. It deals with some serious enough things though. The men who have come to see it are terrified but the women related to it!
What was the inspiration behind writing it? I wrote it over a year ago.In 2011 it seemed a lot of footballers were cheating on their wives and I was fascinated as to why the women stay in these relationships after being humiliated. And I felt sorry for the WAGS! I was trying to understand why they all stayed with their husbands, I would’ve kicked them to the curb! Is it really just for the money or do they in fact love their husbands?
We did a reading in the New Theatre where we could see what worked then we sent it into Lanigans – they liked it! When we did it in Lanigans we had a different actor playing the mistress and because of other commitments she had to drop out and I started playing the part.
Are you a football fan? No I haven’t a clue about football! Some of my friends took the mickey because I was started tweeting about Benitez last week! I’d be more interested in Colleen than Wayne Rooney.
Is this your first time writing a play? No I’ve written a few. I wrote my first play in 2004. It was called The Robb’d That Smiles and it did really well. I really enjoyed being on the other side. My last play was The Fireman and The Nurse and again the theme is a dysfunctional female! Maybe there’s a pattern there!
How do you get involved in writing? When I was in Fair City my colleague Claudia Carroll was writing a book. She was working on it in between scenes and I remember thinking maybe it might be a good way to occupy my time.

Tell us about your time playing Sarah O’Leary in Fair City I was in Fair City for 10 years and I absolutely loved it.It was great fun to play her and I left in 2011 after being killed off! I was kind of glad because my character just got stale, she had done everything! Production must have ran out of budget though because I was expecting to be thrown off a cliff or something very dramatic like that.Instead I died from banging my head off a coffee table!
What other playwrights do you like?
Who would you love to work with?
Marina Carr, Sean O Casey, Beckett, Synge would be among my favorites. I teach drama so these would be the people I’d look to. We’re lucky in Ireland that we have so many wonderful writers.
Judy Dench, I think she’s amazing and Brian O Driscoll.
What are your plans for W.A.G. Do you miss Fair City? for the future? I miss the friends. When you’re there that long you make a lot of friends.I’m still friendly with many of them.I wouldn’t say I miss my character Sarah though!
We would love to go on tour with it maybe bring it over to the UK.
Brian O’Driscoll?! Yes definitely, look at some of the other sports people who have acted, like Eric Cantona for example. I reckon Brian O’Driscoll could be a great actor after he retires!

Sorcha Furlong takes on the lead role in W.A.G. which was written specifically for her by her close friend Gemma. Sorcha, tell us how Which do you prefer all this came about? stage or TV work? A year ago, Gemma and myself had been working together on Fair City and she said there was something she was working on that was top secret. Eventually she let me read it, we did a reading in June in the New Theatre. Then it moved to upstairs in Lanagans, we did a week in July, and a week in August and it went down very well with the crowd. We’ve travelled around the country with it and people have really liked it.
How have your bosses at Fair City been about this?
I love the two. With Fair City I love my job,Orla is a great character to play as she’s always up to something! We film per set so one day we could be filming all day in McCoys. With TV it’s so minimalistic, if you make a mistake you can go again. Theater is a different animal, with TV your audience is at home whereas in theatre they’re in the room with you.
Would you like to write plays yourself? Writing no! It’s a gift I don’t possess! I could never do what Gemma does.
They’ve been great. It’s been busy on Fair City for the past few months but because we film during the day it leaves me free to do W.A.G. in the evenings.
What is the highlight of your career so far?
Are you enjoying the moveintotheatre?
I suppose working on a national soap and to still be doing it after 12 years makes me proud. Everytime I get an acting job is a highlight. It’s not a 9 to 5 career and every actor has to fight for the work.
Yes it’s been great to be working with my best friend, meeting up and having a natter, we’re having loads of fun.I’m really proud of Gemma, a play is only as good as the script and the script is excellent.
What advice would you have for aspiring actors? Never give up.More doors close than open.Really believe in yourself, really work at it. You have to be prepared to work really hard, sometimes on Fair City we might be on set for 14 hours. My Mum always says what’s meant for you won’t pass you by.
Have you acted in any films yet? No it’s one thing I’ve never done, I hope to in the future but it hasn’t happened yet.
Do you watch any of the other soaps? Yes, I grew up watching them all as my mother watches every one of them! I watch Eastenders, Raw, Love/Hate, Irish dramas are great at the moment.
InTallaght_Edition28MasterSoFar_Layout 1 16/01/2013 20:13 Page 18
18
And because you work on a soap yourself do you watch them with a critical eye?
I’ve been told I would be a great party planner as I’m always on the phone organizing! I did PR in college and then decided “this is not what I want to do”.
No not at all. I know a lot of people were going on about the continuation mistake in Skyfall but no, I just like to watch, I don’t bother looking for mistakes!
Always! Since I was a child,I never wanted to do anything else.
Who were your heroes when you were growing up? Marilyn Monroe was one.I would love to have 20 mins in a dressing room with her, just to have a chat even. A lot of those iconic figures never had a chance, they looked for love in all the wrong places.
So did you always want to be an actress? Would you want your children to pursue an acting career as well?
I’ve got a 2 ½ year old daughter so I don’t have to worry just yet! I’ll tell her it’s a hard business to get into with lots of downs, as well as ups, and you have to really want to do it but if that’s what she wants to do then I’d like to see her do it.
Who would you most What do you think love to work with? is an actor’s most important skill? Glenn Close, Marilyn Streep. Any of the character actors, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Hugh Jackman – just cause he’s Hugh Jackman! Ed Norton, Daniel Day Lewis.
If you weren’t an actress what other job do you think you’d be good at?
I always think an actor has to be truthful. When my character Orla was having the affair I had people coming up to me on the street giving out to me! I think you have to be able to make the audience forget that they’re watching an actor.
So how did you prepare to get into character for W.A.G.? I had to get under the skin of the character. Start at the bottom, her personality, how would she walk/talk etc. Then I had to totally dress like how I thought she would dress.Fake everything!
Do you ever go down the Daniel Day Lewis road of method acting? Well I wouldn’t spend a night in Kilmainham jail on my own like him, that’s for sure! In a way my method was to read all the celeb magazines, observe the people around me, the type of people you deal with everyday.
Have you any funny stories from the Fair City set? Loads! Where do I start! One that comes to mind is when Gemma and myself were doing a scene where we were both going on blind dates. Some of the lads burst in in gorilla suits and we fell about the place laughing!

You must be excited? Yes very, it’s funny actually because I just received an email from our producer 10 minutes ago with some of the tracks we’ve recorded and they sound great. You caught me at a good time! This is going to bring us where we need to go. Everything we’ve done so far has been leading up to this.
Checking in with Kilo Fitzsimons of Tallaght Band Resoul Regular readers of InTallaght magazine may remember we interviewed Deco Fitzsimmons, lead singer of Tallaght group Resoul last May.With it being the new year we decided to check in with his brother, and lead guitarist, Kilo to hear how things are going for this up and coming local band.
So how have things gone for the band since we spoke with your brother? Things have been going well. We’ve been doing a bit of gigging around the country, a bit in Dublin as well. We’ve also been recording 5 or 6 tracks and we got signed to a label in September.
Congratulations on getting signed, can you tell us more? Cheers thanks.Yeah we’ve been signed by a German label called Copase Disques. We’ll be looking to release our first single in March.
How did you end up signed to a German label? Alex, who runs the label, heard a track of ours called “Ain’t No Love” and liked it. He got in touch with our manager Mark to see if we would be interested in maybe releasing a single with them and we said yes!
Will you guys be looking to release a single or an EP? We don’t really know yet but we’re thinking a single because with the B sides and maybe a live performance on it it’ll amount to about 3 or 4 songs anyway. A single is probably better for people buying it as they’re getting to hear all aspects of the band.
Which track is most likely to be the single? We haven’t decided yet on which one.We have it down to 3 or 4 tracks; it’s a good headache to have!
What was your highlight of 2012? Well we played at Block C Studios in Ballymount in October. How it works is they record you playing a cover and then put it up on YouTube. We did “Best Of You” by The Foo Fighters and got over 30,000 clicks. On the back of this we won a slot playing in The Academy in November. This was a very big deal for us.The Academy is a big venue and it was great to play in front of a packed crowd. This gig would have been the highlight of the year for us.
You must be looking forward to the year ahead? Yes 2013 is a big year for our selves. We’ve been continually improving and we want to keep it up. We don’t want to be still at the same stage in 2014. There’s always something about the new year that gets everyone energized, isn’t there?!
Have you got many gigs lined up? Yes we have. The festivals are being sorted out around now and we’re waiting to be confirmed for a few. One that’s definitely confirmed is the Mod Weekend in Co. Down in April. The Stripes are playing at it as well, it should be a great weekend. Once we get the single out we’ll be gigging as much as possible. But we won’t mind it,we all love playing live, when we’re onstage we’re at our happiest.

24 24 THE SQUARE’S DIRECTOR OF RETAIL JACK MARTIN WITH LEINSTER STARS JAMIE HAGAN, IAN MADIGAN & DEVIN TONER WITH THE HEINEKEN CUP
Looking back 2012 was quite an eventful year for The Square. Our partnership with InTallaght magazine began in July and to celebrate we threw a party on July 19th. We also launched our website on the same day and presented the first Community Champion award to Bridie Sweeeny,a kind hearted volunteer who has worked tirelessly in the Tallaght Community for over 50 years. Bridie who was Mayor of South Dublin twice and also won Tallaght Person of The Year twice was one of the first people to be rewarded for being a volunteer for over 50 years by Trustus. As well as this July saw the Newbridge store officially open. Hundreds of excited customers turned out to witness TV legend Gay Byrne cut the ribbon. Then current Rose Of Tralee,Tara Talbot, ably assisted him on the day. On Saturday August 11th rugby fever took over the Square as Leinster Rugby team players Jamie Hagan, Ian Madigan and Devin Toner, along with the Heineken Cup, paid a visit ahead of their match in Tallaght Stadium. A huge crowd turned up and the players answered questions put to them by the fans. Bargain hunters were delighted when Dealz arrived on Level 1 in late August. The chain, renowned for it’s competitively priced stock, proved to be extremely popular from the minute it opened its’ doors. As well as bringing great value it also brought 36 new jobs to the centre. September saw us launch a new award called “Little Starz”which is presented to children who do good deeds,
are helpful to their parents,or have been through a tough time. Jacob Keenan was the inaugural winner of this award for his bravery during his treatment in the US. On September 27th the long awaited H&M store opened to much fanfare on level 2.Excited shoppers had gathered on the red carpet from early in the morning with the promise of vouchers and gift cards.A DJ pumped out the tunes as the shutters opened to a larger than expected crowd. October 2nd saw Diesel move to an updated store open on Level 2.Stocking all the latest in Autumn/Winter fashions it proved an instant hit with the hip Square crowd. At our spooktacular Halloween party on October 27 the identity of our new mascot Cheeky Monkey was revealed and we celebrated The Squares 22nd birthday. A fundraiser for The National Childrens Hospital was also held on the day and this proved to be very successful with much needed money being raised for this worthy cause.
The start of November saw two more new additions toThe Square as legendary Dublin chipper Leo Burdocks ended a 99 year wait for the people of Tallaght when it fired up the fryers for the first time on Level 1 and Irelands premier ladies retailer Carraig Donn opened for business on Level 2 making it the place to be for the decerning shopper. Santa arrived on 15th November for the biggest Christmas Party we ever put on.A massive crowd of 7,000 enjoyed fireworks, snow, elves and costumed characters and our first “Little Star” Jacob Keenan was on hand to turn on the Christmas Lights. Later in the month two Square regulars, Clarks and Easons, both moved to revamped stores and Trespass opened a new outlet on Level 2. Looking back 2012 was a very successful year with footfall in the centre up and 15 more retailers opened up.We look forward to 2013 and bringing you, our customers, the very best shopping experience possible.

Bowie is back! TEN YEARS after his last album, David Bowie stunned fans and music lovers alike last week by releasing a new single, titled Where Are We Now? The artist formerly known as Ziggy chose the occasion of his 66th birthday to gift the world his latest offering on his website davidbowie.com. If this wasn’t exciting enough further news emerged that this song is from a forthcoming album, The Next Day, due out in March. Bowie’s career was curtailed drastically after he had to cancel his 2004 tour due to emergency heart surgery. Save for a few live appearances and some studio collaborations, The Thin White Duke had all but disappeared from public view.
Villagers return with something a little different
Judging by Where Are We Now? it would appear Bowie has been hard at work on another stunning career comeback. The track reminds me why Bowie is such an inspiration to so many musicians and is a typically beautiful addition to his catalogue. It provides us with a touching insight into how attached he still feels to his past.
Malahide band Villagers return with the release of {Awayland}, the follow up to the band’s Mercury Prize nominated and Ivor Novello winning 2010 debut album Becoming A Jackal. Led by gifted wordsmith and innovative musician Conor O’Brien, Villagers have come a long way since forming in 2008. Becoming A Jackal was one of the most eagerly anticipated Irish debut albums ever. It sold over 100,000 copies and as well as touching people with its sensitivity and darkness also showcased how talented O’Brien is.
{Awayland} is a different type of record. Not only is the sound different but also the responsibility for creating the music is shared around among the band, in stark contrast to their previous album. Following the success of Becoming A Jackal there’s obviously an increased level of expectation around {Awayland} and the band do not disappoint. Difficult second album? Not a bit of it! Villagers have managed to expand their folk sound into a more spiky style with complex musicianship and social commentary. In {Awayland} Conor O’Brien and his band mates hold a mirror up to our broken society, revealing a nation reeling from scandal and weary with the lack of morals from our politicians and leaders. Opening track My Lighthouse is a bit weak and corny but it isn’t an indicator for what the rest of the album is like. The next track Earthly Pleasure veers off and heads down a completely different road with front man O’Brien throwing off his folksy hat and turning menacing.Amid all the insanity and crashing instruments O’Brien tells us “Lucifer is in our court, Beelzebob is in our banks.” After this comes The Waves, which is also the first single off the album. Starting off quietly with soft synth and acoustic guitars the tune builds up into a horn-laden crescendo and
once again O’Connor is all punkish fury, shouting the odds and calling out the people he feels are destroying our society. There’s quite a nautical theme running throughout the album. Aside from song titles like My Lighthouse and The Waves there are references to“the barrier reef”,“paddle fish” and “the spinning seas” plus the strings on Grateful Song sound like the tide coming in and out.
Passing a Message is a great attempt at reimagining “ska” with it’s rolling bass and stabbing guitars and the band deserve credit for having a go and turning this musical style on its head.
In A New Found Land,You Are Free contrasts the anxiety of a first-time father against the unknowing horror of his baby with “the eyes of a saint and the soul of a thief.” It’s clear that the more innocent Villagers of Becoming A Jackal are gone and won’t be coming back anytime soon. This album is the next step in their musical maturity and bodes well for their future. I enjoyed {Awayland} because of the way it goes from chilled out to manic. It’s a record that needs a couple of listens before it reveals itself, a bit like Becoming A Jackal. There are a few weak tracks but these can be forgiven as the band have taken a huge leap forward to come up with an album that I think is better than its predecessor. I think {Awayland} is a brilliant album and I hope it opens up new doors for the band. It might be a bit of a departure from their previous work but it shows they’re going in the right direction.I know we’re only in January but {Awayland} might already be the Irish album of the year.
People with even the smallest knowledge of Bowie will be aware of the time he spent in Berlin in the late 70’s as being possibly his best era in songwriting and this song is a forlorn reflection of his days in the city.It starts deceptively slowly with soft strings, piano and nostalgic recollections of walking and clubbing in Berlin (“Had to get the train from Potzdamer Platz/you never knew that, that I could do that”.) The chorus,“Where are we now, where we now ?/The moment you know, you know, you know ?” brings Bowie back to the present day in a mournful, depressed delivery. Halfway through the song the drums gather pace and Bowie sings, "As long as there's sun/ As long as there's sun” before the music crescendos into a very moving climax "As long as there's fire/As long as there's fire/As long as there's me/ As long as there's you.” This is a song about mortality, a man looking back on the best times of his life and wondering where he is now and how many more records he’ll make.I love this song as it’s pure Bowie. It’s so great to have new material from him and I can’t wait for the new album in March.

Hailo,The Taxi App, has just passed 125,000 downloads in Dublin, only 6 months after launching in the Capital. Hailo is the evolution of the hail - a free smartphone app where people are just two taps away from a licensed taxi, and cabbies get more passengers when they want them. Hailo is the world’s highest-rated taxi app, with 6,000 five star reviews, and is used by 20,000 drivers and a quarter of a million registered passengers.A Hailo hail is accepted around the world every eight seconds. Launched in November 2011, Hailo is available in London, Dublin,Toronto, Chicago & Boston - and coming next to New York and elsewhere. 2012 was a great year for Hailo in Ireland with over 4,000 Dublin drivers registering with the service, almost 1,000 reviews on iTunes with an average 5 star rating as well as rave reviews from passengers on Twitter and Facebook. Hailo was also recently named the Grand Prix winner of The Appys 2012 in Ireland, and also won the 'Best Travel and Navigation App' category. The Hailo App is available for download on the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). The service is currently available in Co.Dublin and 2013 will see the Hailo service launched in Cork, Limerick and Galway.
Founded by three taxi drivers and three Internet entrepreneurs, Hailo is backed by Wellington Partners and Atomico Ventures, the investors in Spotify and founder of Skype,as well as Facebook backer Accel Partners. Passengers use Hailo because it is a simple, convenient and cost-effective way to book licensed taxis. A cab can be ordered with just two taps of the app and the driver's approach can be seen in real-time. Hailo drivers accept cards or cash, there's no surcharge for doing so, and there's certainly no charge simply for having their cab show up. Customers only pay the meter. If passengers register a card, they don't even need to carry cash. Passengers use Hailo from anywhere including meeting rooms, pubs, train stations, airports, theatres and restaurants. Not only does this mean they do not have to face street hailing or finding a rank, but their Hailo driver will wait for up to five minutes before turning on the meter. All drivers in the Hailo network are licensed drivers and have undergone a check by Hailo. A recent survey revealed that 56% of Irish people are anxious for themselves or a female friend getting a taxi alone. The Hailo service has a great safety proposition. They record all journeys and send the driver’s photo and roof sign information direct to the user’s phone. This practice ensures passenger safety and peace of mind.
The same survey shows that 42% of Taxi users have left a Mobile phone in a cab and a truly remarkable 12% have left shoes behind, Hailo offers you full traceability on your taxi, ensuring that you have the opportunity to retrieve any left behind items. Over the Christmas period Hailo teamed up with Drinkaware.ie and gave away 100,000 €5 vouchers in Dublin. The campaign is focused on promoting a great night out, while reminding people to pace themselves and ensure they get home safely. Hailo is available as a free download from the iTunes App Store and Google Play. Simply search for "Hailo".

The stylish Mercedes A-Class has ditched its dumpy MPV styling and is now a proper rival to the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. The big news is that this version of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class is no longer an MPV-like, high-roofed small hatchback. This model is sleeker and longer with a look that could turn the heads of traditional VW Golf buyers. It's 18mm lower to the ground than the previous car and its sharper design has yielded a low drag co-efficient that has helped cut CO2 emissions to 98g/km on one diesel model. That makes it the first production Mercedes-Benz to emit less than 100g/km, meaning low road tax costs. The new A-Class is 409mm longer, 16mm wider and 16mm lower than the previous generation, so it’s more like an Audi A3 or Volvo V40 rival. In some respects it makes the rather dull and uninspiring B-Class hatchback rather redundant. The more sensible proportions that put it firmly in the medium family hatchback sector could make it much more attractive to buyers who want prestige, a sporty look, practicality and economy. The lowest powered diesel, with its impressive claimed average fuel economy of 74.3mpg,makes it cheap to run. The downside, however, is the relatively high purchase price. There will be three petrol engine choices:the A180
121bhp 1.6-litre, the A200 154bhp 1.6-litre and the 208bhp A250 2.0-litre. All the petrol engines feature direct injection and turbocharging. The diesel range comprises the 107bhp A180 CDI 1.5-litre and the 134bhp A200 CDI 1.8-litre. A 168bhp 2.0-litre diesel will come later. All turbocharged engines get stop/start and come with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed twinclutch gearbox. A-Class buyers can also choose from a host of gadgets including iPhone sync that allows you to link up the onboard operating system with your smartphone and use the menus and controls via the A-Class's digital screen. Safety innovations include fatigue detection, active parking assist, voice activation and blindspot monitors.Buyers will even get a standard-fit collision prevention assistance system that warns the driver if it thinks an accident is imminent and then preps the brakes for an emergency stop. Can the new, slicker A-Class be a match for the likes of the Audi A3 and the Volvo V40? Ireland has been voted“most popular destination 2012” Dublin set to host the 8th Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty The Forum and Expo will be held over two days(February 20 and 21) in the RDS with a third day of field trips, site visits and tours facilitated for delegates to further exchange ideas set in motion by the Forum and Expo. Traditionally, Dublin and Ireland have taken a practical approach in their overseas aid and development programmes. As a major destination for international and homegrown businesses in the technology sector and with research centres in the fields of bio-pharma, clean tech and ICT, Dublin is well-positioned to host a conference examining the role of technology in alleviating symptoms of poverty in cities of both the global South and North. Alongside the Forum there will be an Expo to provide tecnology companies – both large and small, city administrations, Universities and NGOs the opportunity to showcase products and projects which highlight the use of technology in their cities, towns, organizations and communities. The Forum and Expo will deliver an exciting programme of international speakers addressing the use of technology in responding to urban challenges and exploring ways to make cities safer for inhabitants and visitors alike. It will allow for strong participation from delegates, lively debate sessions and will feature real case studies where technology has played a role in addressing the needs of people living in poverty.A key feature of the event is the matching of real challenges to real solutions.
The Forum and Expo - Making Cities Smart, Safe and Sustainable - will marry practical experience to blue sky thinking. It will provide an opportunity for NGOs and grassroots organizations, cities and technology experts to work together to develop smart solutions to the impact of poverty on individuals, families and communities and cities. Lord Mayor of Dublin Naoise Ó Muirí said“At the start of 2013 we get the chance to reflect on the events of the past 12 months and we think of people who are no longer with us – some close family and friends and some people in different parts of the world whose lives have changed in 2012 through acts of nature and through conflict. “We also look forward to the New Year - the start of a New Year is always a time of hope and new beginnings. “We in Dublin are keeping this spirit of hope alive in 2013. We are hosting the 8th Forum of the World Alliance of Cities against Poverty, co-hosted with UNDP in partnership with UN Women and UNITAR.” Mayor O Muiri believes the Forum can give Dublin based companies a chance to show how they can improve the lives of people around the world. “I am going to be joined by Mayors from all over the world that are in Dublin on 20th & 21st February 2013 to work together on some practical solutions that will make a difference to the lives of people who are blighted by poverty. “This is an opportunity for companies based in Dublin to showcase high tech solutions which help cities to improve the quality of life of its people.I would like to hear from you if you have something that you can showcase in February. “Let us hope that by this time next year we will have made a difference and have helped someone to break out of the cycle of poverty” he said.
This title was awarded at a high profile awards ceremony in Shanghai. The annual awards, called The Special Trip: The World Travel Awards, are organised by the Oriental Morning Post, a popular daily newspaper in Shanghai with about 600,000 readers. The awards celebrate excellence in travel and the winners are voted by readers of the newspaper, as well as by travel specialists from around China. And, in a recent survey carried out by Life Style, a weekly Beijing publication with about 300,000 readers,Ireland was named the “most charming destination 2012”. Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Ireland has been singled out for these awards.Tourism Ireland has been working hard to build awareness of the island of Ireland as a premier holiday destination in China.“ “With 2 million Chinese people visiting Europe each year, this is a significant emerging tourism market and an important one for the island of Ireland to tap into. I am confident that these awards will enhance the reputation of the island of Ireland and help to attract more Chinese visitors in 2013 and beyond.” “Since the visa waiver scheme was introduced by the Irish Government, there has been a noted increase in demand among Chinese tour operators for visas for Ireland.A number of tour operators in China also began programming Ireland for the first time in 2012, on the back of the new arrangements. Tourism Ireland will continue to work hard to put the island of Ireland on the map in emerging markets like China, which offers exciting possibilities for tourism in the medium to long-term.”

Tonezone brings a new type of workout to Tallaght A new business opened in Tallaght Village offering customers a machine that promises “the most effective workout in the world.” Tonezone opened on Monday January 7 and the machine that delivers this workout is known as miha bodytec. Peter Bolger is the owner of Tonezone and he explained how the machine works.“The miha bodytec machine, which was developed in Germany, gives a person a full body workout in 20 minutes and has been scientifically proven to give the most effective workout in the world.”
“It works by using EMS – electrical muscle stimulation. In 18 minutes every single muscle group is exercised and it’s impossible to get injured. It’s also safe to train on while getting treatment for injury as it isolates muscle groups.” Peter went on to say that just two sessions a week is enough to guarantee more strength, fitness, speed and power and reduce weight. He says he has experienced for himself exactly how effective miha bodytec is. “The first time I used it I had sciatica from playing sports and after using it I felt complete relief from the pain. I used it twice and bought the concept.” Tonezone is located in Court House Square,Westpark Gate,Tallaght Village and is open Monday to Friday from 7am – 10pm and Saturday 10am – 4pm.
“The machine has been used by F1 drivers, both Klitschko boxers and various Bundesliga clubs. The machine is suitable for all ages, from teens to 80+”

Golden Memories Sunshine, the colour of the jumper Mammy knit for me when I was eight. So soft and fluffy. I'd sit beside her, holding the ball of wool as she clicked away on her knitting needles in front of the fire. I'd watch the yellow and golden flames licking up the chimney on the cold winter evenings. My jumper was for Christmas to wear under the tartan pinafore she'd also made for me. Flecks of yellow dotted through the greens and blues. Buttercups in the summer. We'd hold them under each others chins; if the yellow reflected, that meant you liked butter. Sure who didn't like butter? We just didn't get enough of it. Mammy wouldn't use margarine, except to bake cakes. If we had no butter, we just got jam on our bread. Homemade jam of course. Made from the blackberries we collected in the hedgerows up the back fields.Or crab apple jelly from the apples in my friends’ granny’s garden. Dandelions. Mammy hated them We called them 'pee in the beds' because we were told if you ate them you would wet the bed.Why would anyone want to eat a dandelion? Daisies were always my favourite.Their smiley yellow faces surrounded by a bonnet of white leaves. We'd make daisy chains for our arms and ankles, and crowns for our heads. Slit the stem with the edge of your nail, push another stem through.Just like threading a needle. Cowslips for the May altar.Pale yellow bunches in jamjars, placed in front of the picture of our Lady up on the landing cupboard.''May is the month of Mary'' We'd sing with our hands pressed together, or ''Queen of the May''.During May we always sang hymns. We felt so Holy. Other months we just sang pop songs off the radio.

Sales Mania Its January, a brand new year! We give up the goodies, the wine and the beer! Time of resolving to dieting and scales, We take hold of our purses, and head to the sales. Discounts they beckon to most everyone, Prices are cut and are dropped right down. For some it's the Pub that they head to in town, While others are seeking that special type gown. But the waistline right now it is bloated and pinching, The assistant is watching you angrily flinching. And under your breath, you just have to curse, Damn all those parties and meals, all four course! So the dress it must sadly goes back on the rails, What more can you browse at or try at the sales? There are jackets and skirts and blouses quite plenty, And all kinds of footwear quite stylish and trendy. But not for the first time you must ask yourself, "Why do I bother?" Your brain starts to melt. Yet the bargains you find are so hard to resist, Bags and belts you can purchase and knock off you list. Chainshops and Boutiques and Centres and Malls. And the parking is madness, no space left at all. You can't help but wonder why you get in this frenzy! Your purse it is empty, you must have saved plenty! The credit card bill just next month you will dread. But you'll deal with it right then, not to worry your head. So you come back in tail-backs as slow as a snail, For it doesn't quite matter, you've been to the sales!!!

The roaring twenties remembered in all its reckless decadence.
Nick’s next-door neighbor in West Egg is a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, who lives in a gigantic Gothic mansion and throws extravagant parties every Saturday night.Gatsby is a shadowy figure with an uncertain past, shrouded by rumour and gossip. He is filthy rich, affects an English accent, has a remarkable smile and calls everyone“old sport”.
Fitzgerald paints a grim portrait of shallow characters who maneuver themselves into complex situations. Despite most of the characters being quite unlikeable, if intriguing, the narrator is slightly removed from the hedonism and feckless attitude of the others and remains a bit more sympathetic for that.
The Great Gatsby has been on my radar for a long time. It seems to be one of the great American novels that schoolchildren in the States are forced to read.I’m glad that it didn’t have that baggage for me, as I tend to hate books that I am made to read.
Unlike his neighbours, despite his current straitened financial circumstances, Carraway is from old money and has social connections in the more established East Egg, his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom,who he knew in Yale.
The novel is beautifully written and I really enjoyed reading it. It zips along and is a quick read but doesn’t feel rushed. I would highly recommend it!
About The Author The Great Gatsby seems at first to be full of the casual affairs
This whole novel, supposedly written in 1924, two years after the recounted events, seems viewed through the gauzy haze of nostalgia. The tale is told by Nick Carraway, a young man from Minnesota, who moves to New York in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business. He rents a house in the West Egg district of Long Island, a wealthy but unfashionable area populated by the newly rich, a group who have made their fortunes too recently to have established social connections and who are prone to garish displays of wealth.
of married people and the light-hearted dalliances of the single. No one seems to set much store in love or committment and as a result they float through their lives, oppressed by boredom and ennui. Gatsby is the exception, obsessed by a woman who is already married, that he fell in love with in their youth. He is really nothing more than a man desperate for love and to recapture a past that never quite existed.
Francis Scott Fitzgerald is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald had been an alcoholic since his college days and became notorious during the 1920s for his very heavy drinking which left him in poor health by the late 1930s.He was born in 1896 and died in 1940 aged only 44.He only finished four novels, of which The Great Gatsby is his most famous.

I foolishly shaved my eyebrows off when I was a teenager and they never grew back - will I have to use a pencil forever?
I can't seem to apply eyeliner properly, should I be using it on the lid or below my eye?
Karen, Jobstown
Hi Niamh, eyeliner is one of those things that you just have to practice. I would suggest that you use pencil eyeliner first. With pencil eyeliner you can smudge the line so you don’t have to worry too much about your application. This product can also be used above the eye lid or below and /or in the water line.
Hi Karen,a few girls who I have worked with did the same thing and now they want to grow their brows back. Some of the girls have tried the Mac Prep and Prime Future Length Lash Serum on their brows and they have noticed that the hair is growing back better than before. Another option is to try the semi permanent makeup for your brows. I have seen some good results using this method but I have also seen some that have been really poor so do your research.I reckon the safest option is to stick with pencilling them in and on the bright side you can have any shaped brow you want.

Most plants need an annual pruning to keep them looking healthy and fertile, by just removing any dead wood and any damaged stems that are rubbing against each other will give even the most untidy shrubs a new lease of life, and if pruned in the right way, at the right time, will help to encourage side shoots, better fruiting spurs and more flowers. The best time to carry out this work depends on the shrub and when it flowers or fruits. If you want to do it properly you will have to read up on the plant, but if it is done correctly you will reap the benefits later. A lot of roses, fruiting trees and soft fruits need pruning in the dormant season from autumn through to early spring. Trained fruit trees will need summer pruning as well to keep them looking good. Shrubs mainly fall into two main groups and if you get timing wrong, you will probably have to wait for another year to see any flowers. If the shrub flowers in spring on branches grown from the previous year such as forsythia prune it after flowering. If you make a mistake and cut it hard back before flowering, you’ll be removing the stems that are covered in buds. The second group are shrubs that flower later in the year, on the current year’s growth, such as buddleia. Pruning these in early spring will encourage them to produce fresh growth that will flower later the same year.
There is a third group of slow growing shrubs that will keep the same basic shape, e.g. azaleas, witch hazel, magnolia and the hardy hibiscus. Do not prune these except for the pruning out of dead or damaged wood. Now is a good time to do all the repair and maintenance jobs that have been left undone all year, drain water from any pipes garden hose or taps that you have in the garden and insulate them.Help Protect pots and garden taps from frost by wrapping bubble wrap insulation around them. Any tender plants not brought inside should be wrapped in a protective covering of bubble wrap, fleece etc. Clear paths and patios of any moss and lichen, treat timber with preservative, repair fences, sheds, decks, clean and insulate your greenhouse and make sure heaters are working properly. Clean and repair your garden tools and send the lawn mower in for a service. Before putting a mower away for the winter make sure it is drained of petrol, if it is a power mower, cleaned and oiled. Carry on digging over beds and borders and add as much organic matter as you can. Forking the soil helps prepare the soil for next year,it helps decrease the amount of pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Clear garden waste, this will help to prevent slugs and snails from setting up home. Do not let leaves pile up around alpines as they will die if they are left damp for long.Cover bare patches around clumps with grit to encourage regrowth.
Water your houseplants less often and keep them away from direct sources of heat such as radiators. Make sure to leave out bird food of all kinds and sizes. The more variety of food, the more variety of birds. Make sure there is always plenty of water in the bird bath and keep it free of ice but go easy on white bread. Make sure you don’t walk on the lawn when there is a frost; all you will do is leave foot prints where you have broken the brittle grass stalks. Fern and Cordyline should be wrapped up with straw, surrounded by chicken wire.Place a football in the pond to prevent it freezing over. And after all that you might just have time to look at that your seed catalogue before the first bulbs appears.

I don’t make New Year’s resolutions.I don’t ever remember making them. But I don’t have a problem with the New Year’s resolution itself.New Year’s resolutions are just goals or a new hobby or even a new or better habit. They can give you a purpose, guide your work, and mark milestones in your progress.A new year’s resolution is just a goal that happens to be made in a half-drunken stupor on December 31st. However, setting goals for the year is a wonderful and powerful exercise. If you want to take part in the social brouhaha of NewYear’s resolutions, then I advise the following: 1. Don’t shoot for the stars and hope to land on the moon. Hope is not a course of action.Shoot for the moon and land on the effin moon. That is to say, don’t set too ambitious a goal, but after you set it, hold yourself accountable. Set a goal that is difficult but achievable. We often overestimate our abilities, especially when it comes to physical training. If you’ve never run before, then resolving to run a 5k in less than 25 minutes might be too ambitious. How about resolving to run a 5k without stopping and without walking? 2. Decompose your goal into tangible parts.Do you want to lose weight? How much weight over how long? Do you want to become stronger? What’s a common task that gives you trouble that you would like to perform with ease? Do you want to change your behavior in some way? In what situations will you exhibit the different behavior? Phrase your goal in real-world terms that are measurable and have meaning to you.
towards your goal, then it will be still-born.We all get 24 hours in a day–every single one of us. We all decide how to allocate those 24 hours, and every minute we allocate to something is taken from something else. It may be taken from something useless or something you enjoy, but the time you devote towards achieving your goal will be taken from something else. Recognize it, accept it, and plan for it. 4. Start executing now. This is another reason why New Year’s resolutions are usually worthless: they ascribe mythical importance to beginning work towards your goal on January 1st. Nobody who ever gave half a shit about achieving something decided to start next week. That doesn’t mean you have to start doing burpees in your living room or in your office right now, but you should devote yourself to your goal right now.Thinking about changing your diet? Change today. How can one be serious about changing his/her diet yet decides to continue eating according to his old lifestyle? That is a contradiction, and contradictions don’t exist. The answer is that if you continue putting down double cheese burgers on December 21st in anticipation of changing your diet on January 1st, then you don’t really plan on changing your diet on January 1st. No…not really…not deep down where it counts.
3. Have a plan to achieve your goal, because your goal requires work. If your goal doesn’t require work then tape up your hands to protect your knuckles, punch yourself in the face, and go back to step one and set a better goal. How do you plan to accomplish the work? Do you have the information and facilities you’ll need?. When will you work on your goal? If the answer is “whenever I get time” then go ahead and resume face-punching. You don’t have to create an hourly schedule, but if you don’t commit tangible time
The point is that setting goals and working to achieve them is a messy and difficult process. While I enthusiastically encourage you to set and achieve goals, you can’t condense that process into a neat package with a bow that you unwrap at midnight with a glass of champagne and a kiss. It’s just not realistic, and achieving goals requires real things: planning, sacrifice, effort, and dedication

IRONHOUSE GYM based in Greenogue Business Park in Clondalkin aim to give the best advice and guidance to anyone who is serious about getting in shape. Since opening their doors at the end of March 2012 they have seen their membership swell to approx. 200 members. Top Irish bodybuilder Brian Hickey and his two colleagues Larry Doyle and David Dawson run Ironhouse. All three men are also personal trainers at the gym. Brian explained how Ironhouse came into being and what the gym is all about.
“We all used to train in the Atlas gym in Clondalkin and after that closed we decided to open up in Greenogue and carry on and improve the great tradition set by the Atlas Gym”he said.
“As each year passed, I became more educated, passionate and engulfed by bodybuilding practices.I’ve been competing since 2003 and although I didn’t start out too well, I’ve come a long way in the sport.”
“We are the only hardcore gym in the southwest Dublin area. This gym is for people who want to get in shape. We’re not only for bodybuilders; we get a lot of rugby players, soccer players, boxers and non-sports people as well. The majority of trainers here are normal people, not bodybuilders.”
“Consistency is one of the principles. There are no secret potions,it just takes time.Working out isn’t just about getting bigger it’s also about changing the body shape.”
Due to Brian’s extensive background in bodybuilding he is the perfect mentor to have as a personal trainer. He won Mr.Ireland last October and also finished 11th in Mr Universe last year. Members are able to draw on his experience of how he got himself into such great shape.
Brian said new members are always welcome in Ironhouse and anyone who is interested should call in and have a chat with either himself or one of his colleagues.
Club Goals 1. To grow the club and become bigger and better
“I have been bodybuilding for the last ten years and the advice I would give to people starting out with their training is to be patient, things don’t happen overnight. I started out ten years ago weighing ten stone and it’s taken me ten years to get to my current weight of 15 stone,” said Brian. “Unlike a lot of bodybuilders, I didn’t start lifting weights for sports. Up to the age of 19 I was a competitive triathlete doing up to 5 hours of cardio a day. I was convinced at that time to start going to the gym. When I was 21 I decided I wanted to be a bodybuilder so I started reading up on training and nutrition then just after I turned 22 I did my first show.

Looking To Take Back Title The Shamrock Rovers squad began their pre-season training in early January, being put through their paces by new Rovers boss Trevor Croly. He has assembled a strong squad that will be looking to win back the league title in 2013 after the club’s poor season last year. Croly already had nine of last years’squad under contract and available to him including Rovers 2012 Player of the Year Ronan Finn. From the out of contract players, he re-signed Gary McCabe, Ken Oman, Conor Powell and Rovers’current longest serving player Stephen Rice (with the club since the 2008 season). To that group of players from last season, the new man in charge in Tallaght added nine new players but only two players are actually new the club; defenders Derek Foran, signed from Dundalk, and Danny Ledwith from UCD. The remaining seven new signings were all with the club previously. Goalkeeper Richard Brush returns as does Barry Murphy, the former Rovers schoolboy and senior team ‘keeper. Jason McGuinness and Mark Quigley were signed from league champions Sligo Rovers, both for their second spells with the Hoops. “We have signed two top class players, and they will be great for the club,” said Croly about the two highly rated players.
The midfield trio of James Chambers, Sean O’Connor and Shane Robinson have also returned to Tallaght. The former Rovers captain Robinson spent the last two years playing with Haka in Finland but is delighted to be wearing the green and white hoops again. “It’s a privilege to be coming back to Shamrock Rovers. I’m looking forward to being back in the league and to working with Trevor again,” said Robinson. Croly has also gathered an experienced backroom team around him. Colin Hawkins has stepped into the Assistant Manager role and Tim Dalton is back as goalkeeping coachhaving previously worked with Croly at Rovers and St. Pat’s last season. Rovers’ new Strength and Conditioning Coach is Philip McMahon. The All Ireland winning gaelic footballer with Dublin has been working with the Rovers players since the start of December, building up their fitness ahead of the beginning of collective training. Rovers’ first pre-season friendlies are expected to be towards the end of January with the Hoops playing their first competitive game in the Setanta Cup on Monday 11 February against Coleraine in Tallaght Stadium.

Tallaght Rugby Club was set up in 2002 It was part of the Tallaght Project, an IRFU initiative designed to introduce rugby in non-traditional areas. It initially started running underage teams and focused on introducing the game into schools in the area. Tallaght Rugby Club’s newly established youths team for both boys and girls face their first match this coming Sunday the 20th of January against Barnhall RFC in Barnhall’s home ground in Liexlip Co Kildare at 11 am. Coaches Mairead Hayden, Phil Preston and Alan Bernes say that the whole team, including themselves are looking forward to their first competitive match next Sunday. Mairead also added that the team have been training very hard every Sunday from 11am – 12pm in Tallaght RFC grounds in Ballymana Lane, Kiltipper and in Tymon North Park beside the basketball arena. Training comprises of different aspects of the game from ball handling skills, tackling, rucking, line outs, scrums ect, but with the main emphasis on teamwork and fun. Tallaght president Gregg Behan praised the work of Hayden and the other coaches.“While we’re always delighted to welcome new players into the club from wherever they come from, it’s vital for the future of the club that we start to develop the next generation of players ourselves. We’re very grateful to Mairead and the other coaches who have given up their Sunday mornings to train the young boys and girls and we’re really hopeful that the kids become a big part of the club’s future.”
Rugby is the fastest growing sport in the country and it’s great that the kids of Tallaght can now be involved. Tallaght RFC is a family club and we encourage every member’s family to get involved, whether to be a supporter or even to play themselves, everyone is always welcome. TRFC is hopeful the club can continue to grow in numbers and the youths of Tallaght are a key factor to the success of Rugby in the area.We are always looking for new players of all levels from beginners to experienced players. Why not join in the fun and join your local rugby club, Tallaght Rugby Club? If you’re interested in bringing your child up to training you can contact Mairead at: tallaghtyouthsrugby@gmail.com.
