Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrates 120 years of Conradh na Gaeilge Tá an am sin den bhliain tagtha chugainn arís, ní Lá le Phádraig ach Seachtain na Gaeilge! Coicíos d’imeachtaí bunaithe ar an Ghaeilge ó 4 – 17 Márta, eagraithe ag daoine áitiúla in eagraíochtaí spóirt, brúanna óige, scoileanna, leabharlainne agus méid mór eile d’áiteanna! Bíonn ceardlann drámaíochta, scéalaíocht agus i bhfad níos mó i gceist agus bíonn rud éigin ann do chuile duine de gach aois!

That time of year has arrived again, not just St. Patrick’s day, but Seachtain na Gaeilge. Two weeks of events, workshops, dramas, story-telling and so much more, all based around the Irish language for children and adults of all ages, whether fluent or a beginner.Events are generally organised by groups such as sports clubs, youth clubs, schools, and libraries alike.

Is bliain mhór é seo do Sheachtain na Gaeilge toisc gur Bhliain na Gaeilge í 2013.‘Séard atá i gceist le sin ná gur eiliúradh é an bhliain seo do Chonradh na Gaeilge atá 120 bhliain ar an bhfód i mbliaina, agus é ag rith Seachtain na Gaeilge ó 1902.Thosaigh Seachtain na Gaeilge amach mar ceiliúradh teanga a bhíodh seachtain ar fhad, ach le roinnt blianta anuas anois rinneadh é níos faide agus tá sé anois mar coicíos ar fhad, ach d’fhán an ainm ar mhaithe leis an traidisiún.

This Seachtain na Gaeilge, however, is a special one as 2013 is Bliain na Gaeilge (the year of the Irish language) which is celebrating 120 years since the founding of Conradh na Gaeilge. Conradh na Gaeilge first ran Seachtain na Gaeilge back in 1902 and it has been running since. The success of the celebration has been of such epic proportions, that in recent years the week has been extended to two weeks, although the original name has been kept for traditional purposes.

‘Sé an pointe den ceiliúradh ná chun daoine a spreagadh chun an teanga a úsáid agus a chur chun cinn, ní amháin in Éirinn, ach ar fud na cruinne.

The main purpose of Seachtain na Gaeilge is to celebrate our native language and culture, and to reignite the language within the people again, not only in Ireland, but around the world.

Agus tá i bhfad níos mó eolas ar fáil faoin na himeachtaí ar fad eile a bhéas ar siúl le linn Seachtain na Gaeilge ar

ITT Dublin Library presents Irish Film Poster Exhibition in association with the IFI

Orla Callender, a nurse working in the Children's Emergency Department of Tallaght Hospital is attempting to raise funds for the Children's hospital by organising a talent show fundraiser in the Maldon Hotel,Tallaght on Thursday March 21.

The library is pleased to host an exhibition of Irish Film posters. These are on loan from the IFI which this year celebrates 20 years in its current location in Temple Bar. So it is fitting that the college library hosts this as part of ITT Dublin’s 20 year celebrations. This is the second time that the library has had some of the posters on loan from the IFI, the first time being back in 2008. This was a very popular exhibition then and we hope this will be just as well-liked this time around.

Over 65,000 children visit The National Children's Hospital, Tallaght every year. Whilst the Government pays for the day-to-day running of the Hospital, it has always relied on public-support to provide the best possible care for their young patients. The National Childrens Hospital, Tallaght, is a registered charity and a team of tireless fundraisers work year round to ensure that funds are available to purchase the most up-to-date equipment,as well as distraction toys for wards, departments and waiting areas. The funds also support research and development into new and better treatments and provide accommodation and other support services for families. Orla is currently looking for donations and spot prizes for the event so if you're a local business that would like to help, please ring her on 086 835 773. To get involved in the event, come down to the Maldron at 8pm and show Tallaght that you have what it takes to be a star!

A Promotional Poster For This Year’s Events

To coincide with this exhibition there was a lunch time talk from the head of the IFI Irish Film archive Kasandra O’Connell. This talk outlined the history of the archive of film held in the IFI from feature films, newsreels, amateur films and much more which has captured the changing landscape of the Irish Nation. The exhibition will be of substantial benefit to any Creative Digital Media students but will be of value to anyone with an interest in Irish film. With the new Zip access open this is an exhibition that may be taken in during ones lunch break. The exhibition has been running since Monday 25th February and will run for one month in all. It is open to the public. For more details on this exhibition and talk please see : http://library.ittdublin.ie

Free guided walks in the Dublin mountains Each month The Dublin Mountains Partnership run up to four free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains. The Dublin Mountains Partnership or DMP was set up in May 2008 with the ultimate aim of improving the recreational experience for users of the Dublin Mountains, whilst recognising the objectives and constraints of its various landowners.

for commitments on funding and resources to underpin the DMP’s work. While the long term strategy is to manage recreation in the Dublin Mountains on a more sustainable basis, the DMP’s Action Plan is already underway. Work has commenced on a range of other initiatives including the provision of new and upgraded trails, improved signage and the preparation of a custom DMP map.

The partner organisations involved are Coillte, South Dublin County Council, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Dublin City Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Dublin Mountains Initiative, an umbrella group representing the recreation users of the Dublin Mountains.

Their free guided walks are are lead by DMP Volunteer Rangers and are for all abilities. A beginners hike would be 4km hike to the Hell Fire Club, a moderate walk would be over 10kms from Tibradden to Fairy Castle and a strenuous walk would be 15kms to the highest point in the Dublin Mountains, Seahan at 647M.They advise people to wear walking boots and bring waterproof clothing.

The establishment of the DMP addresses the key need to manage the area as an integrated entity and also provides

Love your local river on Dodder Day! When the River Dodder rushes down off Kippure Mountain the first Dublin suburb it hits is Tallaght. The history of Tallaght has always been intertwined with that of the river. Way back in history the town was founded as a small settlement on the banks of the Dodder tributary called Tallaght Stream. Nowadays the river banks are still a fantastic place to de-stress.Hundreds of people use the river banks every day for walking and running and giving dogs or kids a dose of nature. The first Tallaght residents probably fished the Dodder for brown trout and there's still good fishing off Old Bawn Bridge. The problem is, there's often so much else in the river now, from dolls' prams to shopping trolleys. As you travel downriver towards Firhouse through Dodder Valley Park the problem gets worse. Every time there's a flood the rubbish gets swept off the banks and into the river, so that at times it's more like a flowing skip than a river. Dodder Action is a voluntary group which has been cleaning the Dodder for two years now. On Saturday, March 23 they are having their first Dodder Day, aiming to clean the banks of the river from source to sea with the help of a fleet of canoes. They'll be starting in Tallaght in the morning and will have pickers and bags from the Council. They'll carry on

down the river, to Rathfarnham, Milltown and Ballsbridge/Irishtown. Dodder Action are asking local people to please come out and help us make the day a success. They are particularly looking for leaders in the Tallaght area and welcome community groups, church groups, schools and anyone who fancies a couple of hours of exercise in the fresh air. Find them on Facebook as Dodder Action orphone 01 269 0473 for more information.

TCC Celebrate Local Art Talent The annual children's art competition prize giving, hosted by TCC, was opened with a burst of energy and colour in The Abberley Court Hotel on February 26. The Black Panther Kick Boxers opened the event with an impressive floor display of their moves and high kicks, which was followed by by a burst of colour and elegant ballroom moves by Xquisite Dance, both local Tallaght children's groups. After the huge energy opening, it fell to the TCC PRO,Tara, to introduce the presenters of the awards, Mayor Cathal King, current Tallaght Person of the Year, Norman Kelly and TCC chairman, Jim Lawlor. The winners were from 6 schools and their artworks were unique and used a variety of mediums covering a variety of themes, from the Mona Lisa to rainbows. The winners were Martyna Rybak from St Marys,Christopher Fitzpatrick from St Kevins Boys School, Lauryn Dunne from St Dominics, Shane Condron from Scoil Carmel, Leanne Mulhall from Scoil Maelruain and Teodora Rosu from St Martins de Porres. TCC were also delighted to welcome two Heart of Gold winners, Niamh Gavin and Jack Mc Mahon to share in the celebrations.Councillor Looney,a teacher in St Dominics also came along to cheer on his school's winner on the night. TCC emphasized the role local business play in making this competition possible,The Abberley Court Hotel,Jimmy from the Abberley Kitchen, Tallaght Adventure World, Tallaght Leisureplex, Cadburys and Shamrock Rovers sponsors the venue, the refreshments and the winners’ prizes, including a chocolate hamper for Scoil Carmel.A huge thanks goes to these local businesses. Norman Kelly encouraged children to participate in art in all its forms, saying his own brother and sister nurtured their artistic talents and now have full time careers in the arts. “Art in all forms should be encouraged and children should be allowed to express themselves and nurture their creativity. It can even lead to full time careers such as acting, painting and architecture.” The ceremony was brought to a close with the high energy ending, in a sea of bright colours as Nicole Kelly's Xquisite Dance performers took to the floor to show us their hip hop moves, which left all the adults in the audience exhausted just watching the talented boys and girls.

History was made last month at the home of Shamrock Rovers when Tallaght hosted its first ever Leinster Schools Rugby Senior Cup match Terenure College met Cistercian College Roscrea with a place in the semi finals of the competition up for grabs. On a beautiful spring afternoon a large crowd turned up to see what turned out to be a thrilling match.

The Distinctive Architecture Of The Square Provided The Backdrop To A Thrilling Game Of Rugby In Tallaght Stadium

On what was a momentous occasion for Tallaght Stadium, the game also marked the first Schools Senior Cup tie to be officiated by a female referee when Aoife McCarthy operated as touch judge.

schools were delighted with the standard of the facilities, South Dublin County Council deserve great credit. We hope this is the start of a great relationship between Leinster Rugby and SDCC.”

Local interest in the tie was heightened by the inclusion of Springfield native Tiarnan Creagh in the Terenure College squad, as reported in the last edition of InTallaght.

Peter said that great effort is being made in the Tallaght area by Leinster Rugby, local club Tallaght Rugby Club and Tallaght Community School.

In the buildup to the game Terenure were installed as favorites, not only to put Roscrea to the sword, but also win the tournament outright.

“There have been many great initiatives in the last number of years in the Tallaght area. It’s vital to Leinster Rugby that we continue to stretch our reach and at the moment rugby is thriving in Tallaght.

Few gave the men from Tipp much of a chance but the seeds for this victory were laid last year when they narrowly lost out to the eventual 2012 champions St Michaels in a replay. This time Roscrea were not going to let their chance of taking a massive scalp slip through their fingers. From the off they fought like men possessed, led by their outstanding captain Sean O’Brien they produced 80 minutes of intense rugby that was the rock on which their victory was built. Terenure defended excellently, but so did Roscrea, restricting the ‘Nure to just 10 points before snatching victory two minutes from time when their outstanding flanker Rory Maloney crashed over to score the winning try to give them a 13-10 win. For Terenure it was a massively disappointing end to a season that promised so much. Peter Breen, PR for Leinster Rugby, said everyone at the organisation was delighted with the Tallaght experience: “Leinster Rugby is committed to expanding the appeal of all aspects of our game at all levels and this match was an exciting new departure for the province. We are delighted with the whole day, everything from the quality of the rugby, the officiating, the pitch, was excellent. This match will be the first of many for years to come in Tallaght. Both

“The club there is making great strides as are the Community School. In the past Tallaght wasn’t an area synonymous with rugby but there is enough dedication from both the coaches and players in Tallaght to suggest that this may not be the case for much longer.” While it was the first time a Leinster Schools Senior Cup match was held at Tallaght Stadium, it wasn’t the first time rugby has been played there as Leinster played a pre season friendly with English side Gloucester last August, and the year before the province held an open training session in the stadium. Both events were very well supported in what is one of the fastest growing rugby regions in the province. Nicola Coffey, manager of Tallaght Stadium, said she was very happy with this new sporting experience for the venue. “We were delighted to host the quarter finals of such a prestigious competition here at Tallaght Stadium, the very best of luck to Roscrea as they progress. We look forward to hopefully hosting more schools rugby matches here in the coming years.” To keep up to date with events in Tallaght Stadium you can follow them on Twitter @tallaghtstadium or like their official Facebook page.

Local groups recognised for contribution to Fones 4 Life appeal

The average useful design life of a mobile handset is around seven years, yet users in developed countries typically replace their phones about every 18 months driven by both the evolution of technology and the tendency of consumers to want a device with more applications. Typically more than 70% of collected handsets from developed markets can be refurbished. In most cases recycling schemes were established as voluntary initiatives, raising vital funding for sports clubs, communities and charities. Once collected, phones need to be evaluated to determine whether they are suitable for reuse, with or without further repair. The main destinations for refurbished devices are Latin America, Eastern Europe, China, India and Africa. It has been forecast that 100 million reused phones will ship in 2012. Since 2010, organisations from all over Ireland have been fundraising for lifesaving defibrillators and training with the help of Fones4Life. A presentation ceremony was held on February 12 to acknowledge all their hard work recycling old mobile phones.

Hundreds of people were involved, with over 22 groups successfully reaching their targets this time. Schools, community groups, scouts and sports clubs will benefit in the fight against Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).This is a condition in which the heart suddenly stops beating.SCA usually causes death if not treated within minutes. Defibrillators and CPR treatment increase the survival rate of victims. The ceremony included CPR/AED Training followed by a defibrillator presentation. The recipients included St Maelruan, Kilnamanagh AFC, Clondalkin Auxillary Fire Service, St Louises Junior School and Coláiste de hÍde. If you are interested in getting involved see www.fones4life.ie for registration details. They will send you a free Fones4life pack, flyers, poster and collection box. When you have reached your target amount their courier will collect it. Goods are despatched when processing is complete usually within a few weeks

Fashion show raises €1,100 for CAA Clondalkin Animal Aid was founded in June 1990 by a group of local volunteers dedicated to taking unwanted, abandoned, abused, or stray pets and attempting to find suitable new homes for them. Their members take the animals into their own homes and care for them until a more permanent home can be found. Local politician Trevor Gilligan was one of the models in the 'Fashion Fusion' fashion show held on February 20 in the Honeycomb Cafe in Bawnogue Enterprise Centre, which had an attendance of over 100 people: "The ladies all looked stunning and delightful music was played by Andrea Martin and the Laneways." He went on to say that Ashlinn McDonnell, Claire Sherry and Mary McCoy do great work for Clondalkin Animal Aid and that the charity is a great cause. Many local businesses donated prizes for the raffle and local boutique Siopa Lara provided many of the dresses. It was a triumphant return to these shores for The Script last week when they played three sold out shows in the O2 “I still look for your face in the crowd, Oh if you could see me now Would you stand in disgrace or take a bow? Oh if you could see me now…” The news is filled with the usual depressing doom and gloom as one of Ireland’s only current success stories The Script returned home via Dubai prior to the first of their three sold out nights in the O2. Amid the all too frequent news of government cuts, job losses and rising crime figures these three lads from Dublin are a living, breathing antidote to all the negativity. With our football and rugby teams no longer able to mix it with the big boys it’s up to The Script to go out into the world and fly the flag for Ireland. In the last four years, the band have sold four million albums and 10 million singles, amassed over four million followers on Facebook, one and a half million on Twitter, racked up 100 million YouTube views, and have seen their lead singer star on TV talent show, The Voice.

The Script consist of lead singer Danny O'Donoghue, guitarist Mark Sheehan and drummer Glen Power, three lads who’ve had to fight and battle for every bit of success that’s come their way. The story began in 1996 when 15 year old Mark Sheehan from James’s Street put an ad in the paper offering some of his instruments for sale. Danny O’Donoghue, also a James’s Street head, answers the ad and finds himself jamming in Sheehan’s shed! At the time both lads were looking for something to channel their energies into. Sheehan himself is on record as saying that at the time he was on the wrong path.“I grew up stealing cars, the usual trouble, but music gave me a way out.” Initially they weren’t drawn to the typical Irish rock and folk influences, but instead shared an obsession with American hip-hop and r’n’b. The duo started out performing as MyTown, a boy band who wrote and performed all their own material. Showing the type of determination and bottle needed to make it in the music business they somehow managed to set up a meeting with U2’s manager Paul McGuinness. They played him some of their songs and McGuinness was impressed enough to give them some contacts in the US music studio world. They seemed destined for success, travelling to the US to work with such r’n’b legends like The Neptunes,Teddy Riley and Dallas Austin. But the breakthrough never came. They lost their deal, a period in their career that O’Donoghue looks back on as a “horrible failure.”They didn’t waste their time in the States though, the six years they spent there proved to be a great apprenticeship as they learned programming, did session work, and learned a lot of valuable lessons that would stand them in good stead years down the line.

For a band who have spoken in the past of how they believe the spirit of Dublin has infused their sound, a sound they refer to as ‘Celtic soul’, it must have been great to return home to the place that inspired that sound as one of the biggest bands in the world.

Upon returning to Dublin in 2001 they recruited drummer Glen Power, another Dubliner, who’d been plugging away in the music scene for years, and formed The Script. The three set about the task of carving out a career for themselves. Success took a while to come, but when it did it came with a bang.Seven years after forming The Script their self-titled debut album went straight to number one.

From humble beginnings they’ve gone from supporting the likes of U2 and Paul McCartney to filling stadiums on their own. Now their third album – #3 – recently topped the charts in the United States.

Their first single, We Cry, hit the UK Top 20 in the spring of 2008, and the second, The Man Who Can't Be Moved, hit No.1 before their album was released in the autumn of 2008.

If they were an overnight success, as some in the media referred to them, then it was, as Mark Sheehan described it at the time,“the longest night of our lives.” After the success of their first album the band went on the road again, bringing their songs around the world and earning rave reviews for their live shows. Front man Danny spoke about his worries about making the “difficult second album” but his concerns proved to be unwarranted as the bands next offering Science & Faith debuted at No. 1 in Ireland, 4 in the UK and, perhaps even more importantly in terms of their US ambitions, No. 5 in America. A monster world tour lasting18 months coincided with the release of Science & Faith, during which the band played to 54,000 fans in the Aviva Stadium. Following the tour Danny became a coach on BBC show The Voice just as work on their latest album began. The motivation behind him taking the job on the UK version of The Voice was to make the band’s profile higher. Prior to his appearance on the show the band had remained curiously invisible beyond their fan base, and were largely ignored by specialist music and mainstream media. When cameras caught him at the 2012 Brit Awards ceremony, host James Corden referred to him as “Danny I Dunno Who”. Speaking to FM 104 last year Mark Sheehan explained how it was a band decision for Danny to do The Voice.“We don’t want to be celebrities. We can’t stand that scene. We spent two albums avoiding the limelight, letting our music do all the talking. But because of that we were, to some extent, a faceless band. “Danny did The Voice to put a face to The Script. Him being on a show about singing was good for us. People saw how passionate he is about music, how much it means to him and it made our band better known.” With the lads also beginning work on their latest album, #3,O’Donoghue was spending long days in a TV studio, then up to 12 hours a night in a recording studio with the band. In his absence, Sheehan and Power were left to do a lot of the production work in order to stay on schedule. Family features much on the current album. On Valentine's Day 2009, O'Donoghue's father died suddenly at 63 from an aneurysm. He now has a big rose tattoo on his arm, to remember him. A few months earlier, Mark Sheehan's mother died from cancer. The lads had never opened up about these traumatic events in their lives on record before. It took until this album for the pair to write about their grief, on the song If You Could See Me Now which addresses the deaths, with alternative verses delivered by both singers. It was written over bottles of whisky and many tears while Six Degrees Of Separation is a chronicle of O’Donoghue’s break-up with Lithuanian model Irma Mali after a four-year relationship. The album also includes the track Hall Of Fame which became the band’s first UK singles chart number 1, featuring vocals from American rapper and singersongwriter will.i.am.

Around the time of it’s release Danny explained the reasons behind the album’s title, how there’s a recurring theme to it all. There are the three of them.It was written and recorded in studio three at Battersea’s Sphere Studios. “There’s a synergy to three. If you delve in to it – which we tend to do with everything – it’s a lucky number, in the past it was a religious number. But the title is mostly about us. As any geek fan of the band could tell you, we’re all extremely different people, but magic happens when you mix us together.Well, magic or a car crash, which is how we describe the songs we scrap.” Loved by their multitude of fans, critics have been less charmed, but O'Donoghue is far more concerned about his fans' opinions. And why should he care about the critics when both their 2008 debut album and 2010 follow-up were No 1s? The cynics will tell you that the band play easy listening pop dealing in schmaltzy ballads and cheesy lyrics.By combining elements of hip hop with sweet melodies and anthemic rock, the Script’s music is probably too commercial for a lot of music snobs. But if you scratch the surface underneath you’ll find some beautiful tunes with real meaning. The three lads are smart in how they approach their fans, how much media content they provide everybody. They’re constantly filming backstage and putting up webisodes and taking pictures. The story of The Script appears to have a happy ending, as Danny O Donoghue said last week their message is one of hope.“If there's a message to younger musicians, to me, it's don't give up. Magic can happen."

Prior to the bands gigs in the O2 InTallaght Magazine had a few words with drummer Glen Power. How does it feel to be back playing in Dublin?

so for any of those fans reading this, do you have a message for them? Yes indeed. Thank you for this life, for supporting us and spreading the word and thank you for giving us this job everyday, because without our fans, there's really no reason for us to be getting onstage at all.Without our fans,we don’t have a job, it's really that simple.

This tour is taking the band all around the planet, did you guys ever think you would be this big? I guess we started out hoping things would go well, but in all honesty we did not expect things to go so far and so big so fast. Our main goal now is to maintain what we are doing and try to keep the quality of the music we put out and our live performances as high as we can all the time.

The band has done so well in the US, something that so many European bands fail to do. How did you do it? We have been touring the US from day one. Small shows which have built up into bigger shows, bit-by-bit, state-by-state.There's so much ground to cover in America, I call it 'Planet America!'.We still have so much more to do there too and there are places we still haven’t played there that we would like to.

To play Dublin is the best for us because we bring all our families and friends, there's nothing that tops a Dublin crowd, it is the best place for us to play, hands down.Where else in the world would we have all our own in one place?

Was there anything you had to do differently from You have a huge fan the UK/Europe? base here in Ireland,

No. We put on the same show everywhere, though audiences can sometimes differ and energies change from

InTallaght_Edition31Master_Layout 1 06/03/2013 18:30 Page 18

18

show to show but we always try to put on the same show with the same energy level night after night. It's physically demanding, you need to be in shape!

Your music has featured on many TV shows, what's it like to hear them on these shows? Amazing! And when you are watching a TV show and you forget that you are in that band and then you realise, it’s such a great feeling.

How did you feel when Paul McCartney took time out to give the band advice? We were honoured. He is a living legend. He basically told us how to invite an audience into your world, how to address them and how to make a big audience feel like they are onstage there beside you. It was a really special moment and he gave us that precious thing that we so appreciated, his time.

Do you have any idea where The Script will go from here? Hopefully we'll continue to put on shows that people will still want to watch!

Will you be experimenting with a new sound? You never know, wherever the music takes us.

If you could work with anyone, living or dead, who would it be? Jeff Buckley. Adele. Freddie Mercury.

You often get compared to U2, purely because you are both big Irish bands.Thoughts? I think when we pick up instruments and are Irish, people immediately go to U2. If we have half of their success, we'll be very happy!

Hall of Fame is turning into a bit of a classic anthem, what is that track all about and what was it like to work with Will.i.am? The track is about pushing the boundaries of what you think you can do and doing more than you think you can do. It's about believing in yourself and going for what you are dreaming of.Working with Will.i.am was a great experience, the man is a genius. We really worked well together and it was one of those things that was just meant to happen because it wasn’t planned, it just happened naturally.

What are your plans for the future as a band? Touring, touring and more touring with writing and more writing in between all of that and hopefully another album! For more info on the band see their official website:

the other players in Is the National League the panel? important to you? I suppose what we’ve said to the players all the time is that results do count. It would be ignorant of me to say that we’re not concerned with getting league points, but my job is to get out of the lads a consistency of performance, give players an opportunity to express themselves and to get used to the plan we’re developing with them. The consistency isn’t there yet but it’s been a positive start, defintely. That’s all it is though, just a start.

Jim Gavin is the new Dublin GAA football manager

Are you happy with how things have gone so far? Yes I am.It’s looking good at the moment, fitness wise we’ve a few players with knocks but overall it’s looking very positive. The players are all working extremely hard, they’re a great group to work with and I’m enjoying it. Dermot Connolly is progressing really well after his injury, he’s back training. Bryan Cullen has progressed very well, he’s put a good shift of work in and he’s getting back to fitness and Ciaran Kilkenny is back in the squad which is great.

How do you feel about Barry Cahill’s retirement? Well that is his decision.I spoke with Barry back in December and laid out my plans, like I did with everyone else, so he could see what I was expecting,I did this with all of the players. Barry has been such a dominant player for Dublin down the years, he’s given stellar service to the county jersey and his haul of medals and awards are a reflection of all the hard work he’s put in. I wish Barry the very best and Brigid’s are lucky to be getting him back full time.

Dublin currently have the best defensive record in the country, you must be happy? Yeah they’re all good defenders, obviously I’m aware of that stat. We’re only a few games into the National League and we’ve played teams who’ve had a lot of players unavailable to them. I’m sure if we come up against Kerry again during the summer it’ll be a very different 15 that they put out.The guys have adapted well to the system though that’s for sure.

Maybe. What I’m doing now is similar in areas to what I did at U21 level. But in other areas it’s completely different. I suppose they’ve the advantage in that they’ve heard my concepts and views on the way to play the game, tactically etc,so they do have a leg up but the others have caught up well.

Are the players still doing mainly stamina work at the moment? No not really, Martin Kennedy, the athletic coach, has a programme for the squad and certainly their aerobic fitness, we’re building up on that, and their power as well. I’ve always taken the skill based approach to training from my exposure probably to Mickey Whelan back in the day. We did an awful lot of work with the ball and I’ve brought that in as well. Obviously most teams will be looking to peak in the summer, not February. I’d be very conscious of that as well with regard to some of the teams we’ve played already.

Have you analysed what went wrong season with Is it difficult for players last the panel? to adapt from one system to another when a new manager comes in?

I’ve disscused it with the players but I’m always looking forwards, as in the next game and the tactical approach to it. I don’t tend to look on the past, what’s done is done. I’d no influence over what went on.The players themselves move along quite quickly, so in terms of begruders or anything, that wouldn’t be the case.

From my observation not really. They’re all intelligent players, I look for players with game intelligence, they all have it.They’re all quite adaptable.Yes they’ve all gone through a system over the last four years that was a bit different, not that radically different to what they’re doing now. They’ve adapted quite well, in the first two games anyway.

Do the lads who worked with you at U21 level have a bit of an advantage on

Are there players who’ve claimed their places on the team, who have nailed down positions? Absolutely, yes that’s the reality and the players know that. If you keep performing you have the jersey and it’s up to the other guys to fight for it. The Ballymun lads are at a disadvantage because of their involvment in the club

championship, but the door certainly isn’t closed for them. They’ve done fantastically well, some of them have definitely moved up the pecking order. As have the guys who are playing Sigerson.I said before the way the fixtures are set up the league shouldn’t start till after the Sigerson, same with the club championship.

There’s been a lot of talk lately of splitting Dublin in two at underage level? I know that has come up in the past but it was quashed. At senior level though one All Ireland title in 17 years speaks volumes for the dominance of the Dublin senior football team, or lack of! I don’t think when Kerry were dominant in the 2000’s or Kilkenny or Cork in hurling that there was any talk of splitting them in two.I’m not surprised to hear it but when you look at the stats, even of how many finals we’ve appeared in, Mayo have been in more than we have. At underage, yes, Dublin have been dominant in recent years but there certainly hasn’t been a decade long trend there. If we were dominant for a decade at underage then maybe but I don’t think it’s going to happen. There’s an awful lot of great work being put in in counties all over Leinster and we might see that work level out the playing field in the next few years. In football there’s probably about ten teams who think they can win the All Ireland this year.

Finally Jim, the issue of introducing a blackcard is up for discussion this month, what are your thoughts on it? I’d be in favour of the sin bin, I thought it worked really well back in 04-06. Some managers got on their soapbox and banged the drum loud enough and away it went.I think it’s a much more punitive measure. The FRC have done stellar work and they’ve identified that cynical fouling is one of the problems of the game and the only way to stop it, I think, is to get a player off the pitch, not replace them with someone else. Tactically managers could use it to their advantage by putting in a B rate player to take out an A rate player, he gets a tick and off he comes to be replaced with an A rate player. The only way you’re going to hurt teams is by getting players off the pitch. You’ve seen it work well in other sports.

The Square FC Make Their Debut At Local Charity Event In Aid Of Our Little Star TJ Sunday February 24 saw close to 300 local people make their way to the Postal Club in Old Bawn for a 5 a side football tournament to raise much needed funds for local boy TJ Cunningham. On the day the little boy from Springfield was due to undergo the first of his life saving operations in Detroit, USA, local people showed great community spirit, braving freezing cold temperatures to turn up in their droves for a day of football and fun. The Square was admirably represented by a crack team of Galacticos made up of the cream of footballing talent from the staff here in the centre. The lads performed brilliantly by winning their group and advancing to the quarter final. The players involved were Pierce James, James Roache, Ray Lenehan, Karl Foley, James Kelly, Damien Foley all from The Square and Edward Lam from InTallaght. Paul McNamara, who organized the fundraiser, said he was delighted with the turnout. “The whole day was a great success. The total amount raised from the day was €7051. I’m delighted with how it went and the response we got from the community was amazing. “We had a total of 54 teams, 48 men’s teams and six women’s teams. It really is amazing what we can do as a community when we all pull together.

“Thank you to every one of you who showed up and gave your time and support and helped out in one way or another, it’s so important for little TJ. “It was a fun day and thanks to everyone who participated. Hoping to see you all again soon at one of many fundraisers that will be happening again for TJ in the future.” The football match was the latest in a raft of fundraising activities in the community.TJ’s parents said they were overwhelmed with the support the family has received from the people of the Tallaght area. After topping their group the Square team unfortunately came a cropper in the Quarter finals, losing 2-0 against the eventual winners TJ’s Superstars. The winning men’s team was TJ’s Superstars led by Captain Graham Dowdeall. Blessington Warriors led by skipper Frank Ledwidge were the men’s runners up. The winning Ladies’ team was Team Awesome led by captain Lisa Cahill who defeated Team Supersperm, captained by Debbie Mason. The winner of the signed Shamrock Rovers jersey was David Thompson.

It's a long time since I've seen a film this well made. The cinematography is stunning and every scene is painstakingly considered in terms of framing and pacing as well as costume and set design But this isn't just a beautiful film, I also think it's a really interesting one. I hesitate to give away too many lot points as the air of mystery, intrigue and suspense are vital to the success of 'Stoker'. The films starts on India Stoker's birthday,at an old family mansion in an unspecified American countryside. She

lives there with her mother, father and their staff, headed by a kindly old housekeeper called Mrs. McGarrick who seems to have been more important in her upbringing than her actual mother. India is a strange child, quiet and deliberate, played brilliantly by Mia Wasikowska.Despite being 5 years older than India's character is supposed to be,Wasikowska, an Australian actress whose father is Polish, perfectly portrays a girl on the cusp of womanhood. She is demure and almost childlike, though fiercely independent.India, who from a young age took great joy in hunting trips with her father Richard, was very close to him but not to her mother. When her mother Evelyn receives a phone call to inform them of Richard's death in an automobile accident, both women seem strangely unemotional and detached. As the film progresses,India's strangeness seems to indicate some form of autism. She dislikes being touched and is more antisocial than would be expected from a normal stroppy teenager. She says at the start of the film that she sees and hears things more than normal people do and I think the way things seem so intense, whether it's sound or light, reflect this really well. Richard's brother turns up unexpectedly after the funeral which is a shock to India. She never knew she had an uncle on father's side. Charlie is handsome and charismatic and it soon becomes clear that while Evelyn

and Richard had grown apart years ago, she's very attracted to his younger brother.Evelyn (Nicole Kidman) plays the slightly unhinged seductive widow with disturbing aplomb and you wonder if she doesn't see her husband's death as more of a blessing than a curse to begin with. Matthew Goode who plays Charlie bears a striking resemblance to his onscreen brother, played by Dermot Mulroney. Goode is excellent as the complex Charlie, at once vaguely threatening and yet alluring. Stoker is billed as a psychological thriller. For the first half hour or so,you could be forgive for thinking that this was overstating things rather. The film then takes a turn and the suspenseful music and creepy feeling that have been building begins to make more sense. This film really draws you into the world of a highly sensitive and introverted girl. It's a wholly sensory experience, owing to the highly stylized cinematography by Chung Chung-hoon and the score by Clint Mansell, so that even the mundane and sometimes violent scenes seem beautiful. It's certainly not a film for the squeamish. It also makes you re-evaluate your initial impressions several times throughout. It's a disturbing film that leaves you with nearly more questions than it answers but it's the best film of its type that I've seen in years.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters has been noted as the “classic tale with a twist”. In this spin on the fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel are now bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world As the fabled Blood Moon approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that might hold a secret to their past.

The movie begins with the pair as young children left in the woods by their father only to encounter a witch who they have to kill in order to save themselves. The story picks up 15 years later. Now they have come of age as fierce, formidably skilled bounty hunters 100% dedicated to tracking and terminating witches in every dark forest - hell-bent on retribution. The pair believe their parents have simply abandoned them as children, but could their encounter with a certain dark witch uncover more about the reasoning behind their parent’s decision all those years ago? The 3D effects in this movie are second to none, and are a reflection on how well this technology has developed. I usually find myself shying away from movies with the tagline “in 3D” but I must admit that the spectacle of certain scenes in this film would be missed without the effect of 3D. The film is fast moving and you will find yourself with no opportunity for a“toilet break”as there are very few dull moments. Over all director Tommy Wirkola has done an excellent job in taking a simple children’s tale we all grew up with and taking it to the dark side as we would have never imagined.

InTallaght’s Best & Worst Dressed Always the top topic of discussion after the Oscar winners themselves has to be the best and worst dressed of the night. There are some absolute howlers as always, mixed with the ones who got it all right. 1. Brandi Glanville showed an ample amount of cleavage as she arrived onto the red carpet, stunning looking woman but the low neckline completely cheapened the look of the dress and of herself. 2.Les Misérables' Helena Bonham Carter kept her legs under wraps in a shabby-chic dress in keeping with her eclectic style, but I’m not sure the “just out of bed” look is suitable for the Oscars. 3.Jessica Chastain wowed, in a glistening copper-tone strapless gown with mermaid hem, she looked like an oldworld glamorous movie star, especially with her oversized vintage Harry Winston diamond earrings and bright red lipstick. In my opinion the award for overall best dressed had to go to her. 4. She's known for her little black dresses, but when it comes to the Oscars, she pulled out all the stops and to be fair what more did we expect from America’s most loved actress? A simple but show stopping tight bodice and full skirted red gown accentuated her flawless figure.

Debut single shows promise Back in November last year, we reviewed a song that we thought would be Tallaght band Just No’s debut single. We were a bit ahead of ourselves then but following their recent success supporting The Last Waltz in a sold out Olympia, Just No will launch their first single Where You Come From in Whelans on March 15. The band pride themselves on their very original sound and their songs have been described as deeply thought out musical arrangements partnered with pop influenced melodies. Musicmaker has compared the local band’s sound to “The music of Muse meets the melodies of The Killers”.Lead singer Laura has quite a distinctive voice which is recognisable from start to finish. Returning from a successful tour of Spain in the summer of 2012, Just No gained the attention of Ryan Sheridan, whom they recently opened for in the Hill Of Uisneach. Their cover of Gotye's hit Somebody I Used To Know saw them emerge as Ireland's most viewed Block C Live Sessions band with over 80,000 views, and earned them a place on the main stage in the Academy.

A delicate balancing act between typical Dido and a new sound Dido is back with her forth studio album,Girl Who Got Away which serves as a follow up to 2008's Safe Trip Home. Many young people today may dismiss Dido as“boring”due to the English songwriter’s previous hits but to be fair she has done very well for herself over the years. Her albums No Angel and Life for Rent were two of the UK and Ireland’s best-selling albums of the late 90s and early 00s, earning 16 platinum discs between them. Now Dido returns at the age of 41 with a fourth album that's reassuringly familiar. Her voice sounds exactly as you remember which will be welcoming news to her longstanding fans who I’m sure had hoped the star hadn’t succumbed to the pressures of “modern day music”. Her vaguely Celtic and slightly detached voice is instantly recognisable and her music remains quintessentially pleasant.

Their single Where You Come From is a song that I feel could fit into any top chart whether it be here or abroad. The band are certainly different to anything that’s out there at the moment. The song itself is upbeat throughout and focuses on staying true to yourself and remembering not only “Where You Come From” as the title suggests, but also where you plan on going. But elsewhere, I must compliment Dido's approach to certain songs, which make her relatable. She sets the scene beautifully on Happy New Year, a song about a woman struggling to move on from a break-up.This is my favourite track on the album, and somewhat reminds me of Adele’s timeless piece Someone Like You. Although Dido’s song bears no resemblance to Adele’s tune there are slight similarities in how the song is delivered. "I'll leave the party early / After a drink or two," she sings sorrowfully."And check my phone for calls / Though I know there will be none from you."

Although I did say Dido had stuck to her original roots this album leans slightly closer to electro-pop than before, but it's still filled with the friendly melodies and plain-speaking lyrics that we are all familiar with.

Most things about this album could be branded as “typical Dido” yet I was pleasantly surprised with track seven, Love to Blame. This is perhaps the first Dido track you could actually dance to. Her strong vocals are still evident from start to finish, but this track may be more suited to today’s airwaves and possibly a high positioning in the charts.

At times plain speaking can mean utterly dull. The title track begins with:"I wanna move with the seasons / And go with the flow / And take it easy / And let stuff go." which I found quite uninspired and flat.

Overall I was highly impressed by this new album, Dido is the type of vocalist that will always have her loyal fans but I believe that certain tracks on this album may garner her a few new ones along the way.

Jonathan deBurca Butler of the Irish Examiner hailed the group and described how“These guys have got that spark that can’t be taught.” Their impressive song writing abilities and unique sound have gotten them on to the Hot Press '40 Hottest Up and Coming Acts' list 2012. Just No seem to be a band to watch.Tickets to their album launch are available from www.whelanslive.com and are just €5. To the delight of all gamers Sony have finally unveiled the new PlayStation 4

Pressing the share button allows the player to cycle through the last several minutes of gameplay to select a clip appropriate for sharing.Video can be uploaded directly from the console, either to websites or another PlayStation Network user. Gamers can live stream their games via services such as Ustream. Friends can comment and help out.The PlayStation 4 home screen will include personalized content from friends.

Hundreds gathered in the Hammerstein Ballroom at Manhattan Centre Studios in New York to see Sony’s next-gen console. The PS4 will be the fourth console produced by Sony and the successor to the PS3 as part of the PlayStation series.

One of the criticisms of the PS4 is that gamers will not be able to use their PS3 games with the new console. With people struggling to makes ends meet it is a lot to ask for them to spend hundreds on a game console and games when they already have a PS3.

An exact release date hasn’t yet been confirmed only that the PS4 will be released at some point in 2013.At the launch Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House said “Sony’s most powerful platform ever will allow worlds to come alive with greater fidelity and intensity than ever before.”

Dave Perry, founder of cloud gaming platform Gaikai, which Sony acquired for $380 million last year, was up next on

The PS4 comes with 8GB of memory and brand new controllers. The PS4 will also allow users to use their smartphone and tablet device while playing a game. ‘Social’ was one of the five major principles Sony talked about at the PlayStation 4 announcement. While the console will feature social functionality, people who do not want to connect with others need not use those features. The PS4 controller, "DualShock 4", will include many of the recently rumoured features. It will offer enhanced rumble and reduced latency, a touchpad, a headphone jack and a new Share button, which will allow players to record gameplay or screenshots and share them instantly."Our goal is to make the sharing of video on PS4 as popular as the sharing of screenshots is today," he said. PS4 will also support cross-game chat.

stage in New York."What we're creating is the fastest, most powerful gaming network in the world," he said. "With Gaikai and the PlayStation Store, you'll be able to instantly experience games for free [and only pay for the full experience if you want to]." PlayStation cloud services will be rolled out in phases, with the ultimate goal being to give players access to all of their favourite PSone, PS2 and PS3 titles. It seems like Sony have launched the PS4 to rival Microsoft’s XBOX 720 and the new Nintendo which are both expected to be launched this year. The Sony PlayStation has always been top dog and with the launch of the PS4 it seems like in the video gaming industry they can’t be touched and will always have a legion of loyal fans ready to part with their cash to get the latest console from Sony.

Colonial Marines is meant to bridge the story between Aliensand Alien 3 In reality, it feels more like a lazy rehashing of the former, sluggishly checking off established marine vs monster moments without adding anything worthwhile. Aliens: Colonial Marines is a disappointing exercise in bland corridor shooting, dragged down by laughable dialogue and cooperative play that makes the game worse than when you adventure on your own. Colonial Marines is unremarkable in every conceivable way:it's far too easy, generally devoid of tension, and lacking in the variety it so desperately needed. The game is remarkably light on variety.A couple of battles masquerade as boss fights, but they require no strategy and are just as easy and thrill-less as the rest. The four to five hour campaign has no thrust to it; it feels the same from beginning to end, and the finale just drops with a thud. And by being so easy and predictable, the game lets down the license.

By far the biggest letdown, however, is the aliens themselves. The films portray xenomorphs as perfectly evolved killing machines: intelligent, agile and relentless. In this game, they're bumbling beasts that run directly into oncoming fire and flail inaccurately once close enough to attack. Despite its many faults, Colonial Marines boasts a few redeeming factors. Fans of the films will get a thrill out of ample references and a few appearances by classic characters. The soundtrack, too, is true to the series. You'll experience more Pavlovian terror from the motion sensor's familiar ping than from actual combat.

It occasionally lets you peek at the game that could have been, allowing its rare scraps of unsettling atmosphere to seep into your bones. Even the predictable plot would be forgivable if the action behind it were solid.Under the hood, however, there's just more disappointment.

It's unclear why most video games that take on the Alien lore struggle mightily. One thing is for certain: It isn't a case of over-hyped expectations. Strip away its ties to the franchise, and Aliens: Colonial Marines is just another substandard FPS. It's not good enough to be enjoyable, it's not bad enough to be remarkable.

The drab, fuzzy graphics are a callback to the infancy of this console generation. NPCs stand motionless, lips unmoving, while giving dialogue.Human enemies are no better,as mercenaries often fire into the distance and get hung up on crates and walls while running for cover.

Far Cry 3 is an excellent game and the visual effects on offer are second to none Far Cry 3 is a delightful and harsh tropical wonderland, crawling with wildlife and threatened by the pirates and drug runners that disrupt its peace. The troubled paradise you explore is colourful and wild, enticing you to investigate its ravines and discover new ways to enjoy the open world playground sprawling in front of you. The more you play the more your desire is to complete every last challenge and check out every last icon on your map.As you progress through the levels you will travel across the entirety of two sunny and sinful islands, hunting for rare game, speeding medicine to needy communities, and skinning sharks so that you might craft new wallets with their hides. You play Jason Brody who is kidnapped, along with his brothers and friends at the very beginning of the game, by Vaas, the leader of a group of modern-day pirates. You escape naturally and meet up with Dennis from the Rakyat tribes. The island is fictitious, situated somewhere near

Thailand, but it’s clear the game developers took cues from actual native life. Dennis begins to train you to become a killer to help rescue your friends and family, as well as take vengeance upon Vaas and his men. Within a few hours, you go from a Jason Brody that is horrified that he just killed a man to gleefully lighting fields of marijuana on fire with a flamethrower. One of the most innovative features, was the crafting system. Collect plants and animal skins to create pouches for holding ammo, loot sacks for holding money and objects, holsters for weapons and more. The recipes are easy to follow and the map helps you easily spot the animals or plants you need. You can also lose yourself in a ton of side quests involving liberating bases, taking part in supply runs and more. Some may say is this game not just the same as any other “shooting game” and I must say Far Cry 3 is completely original in its own right and offers a lot more than any plain “shooting game”. Even with some nagging story issues,Far Cry 3is one of the best first person shooters on offer at the moment. You’ll want to spend time with Jason Brody on this island for hours and hours, you just might not like him very much by the end of the game. Kia has come a long way in the past few years, and the Sportage has been their best model yet Now in its third generation, there is much more to this car than just its stunning design. The new Sportage marks a dramatic shift in direction for Kia’s compact vehicle design, its longer, lower, wider and as some would say almost unidentifiable as a member of the Kia family. The front grill is a serious feature piece of this model and is certainly eye catching.Despite the increase in size there is a substantial reduction in weight and the design is sleeker, these measures enhance fuel economy and improve overall refinement. The new Sportage also provides two things consumers demand in a modern car and that is a commanding driving position and a heightened sense of security. The new car comes in base, LX, EX, or SX trim. The interior of the Sportage is quite amazing and offers the usual standard features on the base model: • 16-inch alloy wheels • air-conditioning • two 12-volt power outlets • tilt-only steering wheel • height-adjustable front seats • Bluetooth phone and streaming audio • and a six-speaker audio system with USB connectivity

The pros to the model would certainly be the sharp styling inside and out, more fun to drive than other crossovers, a powerful and effective turbo engine in SX trim, plenty of premium features in the base model. The cons that stick out for me would be less cargo capacity than other crossovers.I do feel the cargo capacity is quite generous but when you compare it to other models similar to this design it falls short. First impressions count for a lot, and the 2013 Kia Sportage makes one that lasts. The Sportage will have your friends saying, "That's a Kia? Really?" Kia's new design chief comes from Audi, a company that knows a thing or two about style so from judging by this year’s model and design I can guarantee we will see big things from this brand over the next few years. Kia have not only kept up with the modern demand but I feel they have surpassed other major car manufacturers who have been around a lot longer and possibly never viewed Kia as a market threat.Only time will tell but this era of Kia is certainly something special that consumers can get very excited about.

Govt unveils €300 million science funding The Government today announced a landmark €300m investment in scientific research, which is closely aligned to industry and enterprise needs and job opportunities with €200m from the State and €100m from industry. The cash will be invested in seven world class research centres of scale, according to Richard Bruton, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and Sean Sherlock, Minister for Research and Innovation.

Quantcast to bring 100 new jobs to Dublin There was great news on the jobs front for Dublin last month when digital advertising company Quantcast announced they are to open a base in the city with the creation of 100 jobs. Quantcast, who specialise in audience measurement and real-time advertising, is to establish its operations centre for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in the capital and will fill the high quality posts over the next two years. Jobs Minister Richard Bruton welcomed the news saying: "Big data is a sector in which major growth is predicted in coming years, and in which Ireland has significant competitive advantages, between our existing base of companies in this sector, our skilled workforce and publicly funded research in this area. Today's very welcome announcement demonstratesthe potential that exists for Ireland in this sector." The investment is supported by his department through IDA Ireland. Konrad Feldman, chief executive of Quantcast, said the new centre creates a base for satisfying his clients'

desire to expand their use of our real-time advertising in Europe and beyond. "Dublin offers the rare mix of a vibrant local technology business scene, an exceptional talent pool and easy accessibility to Europe's major markets, all instrumental in our decision to locate," he added. As a pioneer of direct audience measurement since 2006, Quantcast says it has one of the most in-depth understandings of digital audiences across the web, allowing marketers and publishers to buy and sell targeted advertising. Account management, product operations, marketing and finance areas will be supported in the new Dublin office.IDA Ireland CEO Barry O’Leary said the arrival of Quantcast will bolster Ireland’s reputation as the ‘Internet Capital of Europe’. “This company is one of the top 5 big data-processing organisations in the world, offering customers a pioneering, targeted audience advertising solution.I would like to offer the ongoing support of IDA Ireland to Quantcast; a most welcome addition to Dublin’s cluster of digital media companies,” O’Leary said.

Retail sales of €1.435 billion recorded in 2012 for Centra The retail chain grew by 1.6%, serving over three million customers per week.Speaking at Centra's National Retailer Conference in Killarney, Martin Kelleher, managing director of Centra, also announced that through a €20m investment programme by retailers, the brand will add approximately 400 jobs,as 20 new stores are added to its network in 2013. Some 100 of these will be new jobs created by the opening of a number of new greenfield sites, with the balance created by store extensions and other independent stores joining the Centra network. Mr Kelleher said: “In 2012, we increased value to our customers by 15% or almost €90m, through price reductions and continued to evolve our range to stay in tune with consumer trends. This is illustrated by an increase of almost €5m in our 'Food-to-Go' sales, while our new

'Table for Two' range of convenience dinners, delivering sales of over €1.2m.We opened 18 new stores last year, demonstrating the continuing preference of Irish shoppers to shop local, saving time and petrol, particularly when they can avail of good value and an innovative range. “Together with our retail partners we employ almost 10,000 people, making us one of the biggest employers in the country. As our stores are all locally owned, we also invest back into the community by sourcing from local producers and making a real difference by contributing to local sports clubs and charities. In 2012 our retailers spent €40m directly with local suppliers and also donated €2.1m to community organisations."

The new funding will be delivered through Science Foundation Ireland's (SFI) Research Centres Programme coupled with over €100 million in cash and in-kind contributions from industry partners, making it the largest ever combined state/industry co-funding announcement of its kind in the research field in Ireland. The funding will be provided over the next six years with a mid-term review. Thus far 156 industry partners are connected to the centres, spanning multinationals and SMEs,including Cisco,Hewlett Packard,Microsoft,Medtronic, GSK,Pfizer,Eli Lilly,BT,Kerry Group,The Irish Times,ESB,Alere, Intune Networks, Intel, IBM, RTE, Roche, UTRC Ireland and many more. Among the research activities funded are "Big Data",a sector currently growing at up to 40% per annum; advanced food research based around microbes which live in the gut; world-leading research to take advantage of Ireland's natural advantages in marine energies and research to develop screening and diagnostic tests for perinatal and neonatal conditions. Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD said,"A key part of the Government's Action Plan for Jobs is to build on the major achievements in scientific research we have built up over the past decade and turn more good ideas into good jobs.Today's announcement will lead to the establishment in Ireland of world-class centres of research excellence and scale which will be game-changers for Irish scientific research." "The E300million investment announced today, and the seven new, large-scale, world-class research centres it will support, are aimed at achieving a step-change in the reputation and performance of Ireland's research system. This will support more than 800 talented scientists, develop cutting-edge research and new technologies, attract dynamic partnerships with industry and ultimately help to create the jobs we need."

Global Greening for Paddy’s Day

In a major coup for Irish tourism, an ancient wonder of the world: the Pyramids of Giza, and a modern wonder of the world: the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil are set to go green for the first time ever on St Patrick’s Day 2013, joining a host of other major landmarks and iconic sites around the world in Tourism Ireland’s annual ‘global greening’ initiative. Other newcomers going green for the first time include the famous ‘Welcome’ sign in Las Vegas, the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, HMS Belfast in London, City Hall in Houston, Texas, the Citadel in Jordan, the Tower of Hercules (a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Galicia in Spain), the futuristic new EYE Film Institute in Amsterdam, the International School in Bonn and the Allianz Arena in Munich (home ground of FC Bayern Munich). Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “Tourism Ireland’s ‘global greening’initiative is stepping up a pace this year, with some famous additions. We are absolutely delighted that so many well-known sites and attractions are eager to come on board with us and join in our celebrations.

Niagara Falls (on both the Canadian and the US sides), the Empire State Building in New York, the Chicago and San Antonio Rivers, the famous White House fountains, as well as San Francisco’s Coit Tower, City Hall and Ferry Building Marketplace will all go green on March 17. Tourism Ireland has a host of consumer and trade promotionstaking place around St Patrick’s Day and throughout the spring in the US,including sponsoring live coverage of the New York St Patrick’s Day parade on NBC, with film clips on Ireland.

“The success of our ‘global greening’ is due in no small part to the great work that has been carried out across the world by Irish people down the generations and, in particular, to the great support we’ve received from Irish ambassadors and the diaspora. The eagerness to take part underlines the strength of the deep spiritual connection that people everywhere feel to Ireland – a major boost in this special year of The Gathering Ireland.

In Europe, Tourism Ireland has arranged for the Allianz Arena in Munich (home ground to Bayern Munich) and the famous Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen to go green in addition to other well-known sites which will take on a green hue, like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, the Fernsehturn (television tower) in Berlin, Odeonsplatz in central Munich and the ‘Lighthouse’in Düsseldorf – grabbing the attention of potential visitors in those cities.

“Over 70 million people around the world claim links with the island of Ireland and St Patrick’s Day is a truly unique opportunity to reconnect them with their heritage.”

Tourism Ireland is also inviting all Irish pubs and travel agents around Germany to ‘green’ their windows and shop-fronts around 17 March.

In Great Britain major sites including HMS Belfast in London will‘go green’on St Patrick's Day along with other buildings like Manchester Town Hall and the Clyde Auditorium, affectionately known as ‘the Armadillo’, in Glasgow.

Using a variety of material supplied by Tourism Ireland, the pubs and travel agents will compete to win the prize for the best ‘green’ windows this St Patrick’s Day.

Your Snakes Are Now Parades St Patrick shaped a peep-hole through a cumulus cloud in the sky and glimpsed a huge snake slithering through the streets of Dublin. He marvelled at the type of snake this was.A massive body, disconnected in parts, with it's back undulating high and low with the most magnificent colours he had ever seen. People played music and danced and ran along by the sides of the snake and Patrick wondered why they had no fear. He asked himself how he had missed this monster! He decided to ask his Master if he should take a trip down to Ireland and banish this intruder? His Master said, "Come Patrick! What you see in Dublin can be seen all over Ireland today" And raising all the clouds from above the Emerald Isle they could indeed see many similar specimens, spaghettying their way across the land.

The Solar System

'Besides, your mass is entirely gas And Saturn's the same thing.' Saturn was aghast, but still he asked: 'Have you not seen my rings?'

"This means I must go back" said Patrick. But his Master said, "No Patrick, What you see are not serpents, but rather, celebrations held in your honour! Look at how happy the crowds are.The different sections are called floats, and the performers come from all over Ireland and the World!

Two or three billion years ago, Give or take an age. The Sun was trying to choose a world Where life could have a stage.

'Your rings are buff but they're not enough,' Said Sun trying to be nice. Out walked Uranus, Neptune was furious, Though he was mostly ice.

Hours of training go into the dance, and musicians perfect the stroke of the right chord, as they sound out their melodies. Majorettes throw their batons up for us to catch! Gallons of paint, glue and clay, meters of wood and reams of paper are lovingly used to create the sights you see.

'How about me?' asked Mercury 'I'm rather close to you.' 'But far too close' the Sun replied, 'That goes for Venus too.'

Sun cleared his throat, gave Pluto his coat (Being merely a planetoid). 'But what about you – the one in blue?' Sun yelled across the void.

There's tinsel, sequins, and bejeweled buttons and bows in abundance.Rolls upon rows of fabric held together with spools of glittering thread in order to create the show.Young and old will be joyful and playful throughout the day and long into the night as they drown shamrocks and harped badges with beverages in forty shades of green.

'Well that's a shame,' Venus proclaimed, 'I guess Mars'll be your choice?' Sun seemed to agree – 'He may well be.' And Mars cried out 'Rejoice!'

'You overlooked me in stanza three,' Said Earth shyly with a smile. Sun was impressed – 'Your atmosphere's best, It's stable and quite mild...'

They will carry delightful, happy memories for ever all in your memory Patrick!

Not so fast,' Sun said at last, 'Now I think of it – You're a tad too cold for life to take hold, Albeit by a bit.'

'My search is done, for you're the One, Sun turned to Earth and beamed: 'Be my wife, and in starting life, We'll make an awesome team.'

And your snakes are now parades!!!!

Martina Delaney This is Martina’s third poem that we have printed this year! She lives in Newcastle, Co. Dublin and had been writing for many years.

'Hard luck chuck' old Jupiter clucked, 'Pick me, it makes more sense.' Sun scratched his chin, then said to him: 'No thanks, you're way too dense.'

Sean Urell Sean is from Firhouse and this is his second poem in InTallaght.

Chillingly beautiful, an unusually human historical novel The Solitude of Thomas Cave is a remarkable novel. As often happens to me, it was the cover design that drew my eye to it in the bookshop. The large hand rendered title stands out, embossed in rusty red gloss letters, from the pale snowy background, dwarfing the solitary figure of Cave walking away from us. The story is told by two Thomases.Thomas Goodlard opens the story "related on the Suffolk Coast one evening of June 1640".The main event of the book actually happens some 24 years earlier in August 1616.Both Thomases are whalers, working on the whaling ship Heartease which is stationed in Duke's Cove, deep in the Arctic. It is the end of the whaling season and the ship must return home before the ice closes in for the winter. Thomas Cave seems a troubled man, a quiet enigma trying to escape a tragedy that he has failed to leave behind on dry land. Goodlard is an inexperienced teenager, on his first trip to the North and finds himself Cave's only friend among the crew. In what might be a deadly decision, Cave rises to the challenge that a man could not survive a winter in the far North and makes a wager that he will remain at the whaling camp alone until the next season when the Heartease will return.

darkened pewter and having that sluggishness to its movement that comes when it is heavy with the beginnings of ice.In all God’s Earth, from the tip of Africa to the Indies or the wide Pacific, a man might never see a sight so lonely.” In a poignant moment,Captain Marmaduke asks Cave if he has any children and he replies that he had.In the isolation of the frozen North,Cave begins to be be visited by ghostly apparitions of his wife and baby. The loneliness, and unending nights of winter start to take their toll on his mind. Along with the difficulty of just staying alive, he has to contend with memories that continue to haunt him. I’d never read anything about the kind of life that men lived on whaling ships and while I would have expected it to be a very foreign and antiquated existence, the very ordinariness of the way that it is recounted makes it feel normal. The brutality of the work and how damaging it was to the environment was even clear to Cave, once he caught a glimpse of what the land would be like without human interference. His beautiful descriptions of the barren silent landscape are in stark contrast to the descriptions of the loud, brutal way the whalers treat the bay and the animals within it. There was one particularly gruesome story of a seal being skinned alive and then thrown back in the water, just for the fun of it.In the context of the story, this pointless cruelty seems somehow understandable, though still horrible to read.

In beautifully constructed prose, that feels sympathetically old fashioned but not excessively so, Harding depicts the story of Cave's struggle for survival in those harsh and unforgiving conditions. The mid section of the book is told by an omniscient narrator, broken up by excerpts from Cave's log in which he records his actions and experiences. This combination of what Cave chooses to disclose to this record, mostly the bare facts of how he lived day to day, alongside the narrator's insight into Cave's thoughts and feelings, makes for an interesting portrait of his winter of 1616/17.

The solitude of Thomas Cave is not just the external solitude of being left alone on an island in the frozen North, but the inner solitude of a man who has lost his family and really seems to have nothing much to live for. He has returned to the sea because it is what he knows but it’s not somewhere he wants to be.He tests himself to see if he can endure what no other man has before, surviving by himself for a whole winter in Greenland, but it is not just a practical test, it also tests his mental endurance and at times he finds it lacking. It’s a fascinating tale, told in an interesting way that keeps you intrigued right to the end of the narrative, as it skips between narrators and time periods.

Before the ship leaves, some of the other sailors help him construct a small hut in which he’ll pass the winter. They leave him with as many supplies and food as they can spare.

About The Author

Goodlard describes the scene:“I shall not forget the sight of him as we left, that picture stays strong with me: his figure still and straight on the wide shore, the land huge and bare about him,the snowy dip of the calley at his back, the mountains on either side, twin peaks they were of seeming identical height, rising steep and smooth and streaked with grey as if in some strange reversal the rocke were ashes that had been poured down on to the snow from heaven; the sea a

What's the best way to take your makeup off at night?

Is it bad for my skin to wear full make up every day?

Lisa, Tallaght

Ruth, Citywest

It will really depend on you skin type but a cream cleanser is a great way to remove your makeup. I also like to use a white face cloth because you can see if all your makeup is removed, which is really important.Eye makeup can be difficult to remove but be gentle, the skin around the eyes is very delicate.Find an effective product and even waterproof mascara will come off without rubbing too hard.

No not at all, I wear makeup everyday with no ill effects. The secret is to make sure you remove it every night and have a good skin care regime. First decide what skin type you have and then experiment with different products, such as cleansers, toners and moisturisers that are designed for your type of skin, until you find a system that works for you.Your skin should be supple but not oily when you find a good balance.

Growing herbs in containers can be one of the most rewarding aspects of gardening, and in a very small space you can grow a lot of different varieties of herbs. Fresh herbs will taste so much better than dried herbs in your cooking and you can pick them from your garden exactly when you need them. Why grow Herbs? They look good, smell good and can do you a lot of good as medicines, perfumes, insect repellents, and last but not least, can add a beautiful flavour to your food. Herbs in most cases, are tough wild plants and with the right conditions will thrive and be easy to grow.It is not true that all herbs like full sun; basil likes partial shade at midday. So when planning your garden, you should divide your plants into two sections, those like, coriander, thyme, rosemary, sage, oregano, and French tarragon that like full sun; and herbs that prefer partial shade such as parsley, sorrel, mizuna, mustard, chervil, and rocket. If you have a choice, select some to put in a window box. Place it on the sunny side of the house and plant up with some chives, oregano, creeping rosemary to hang over the edge and lemon thyme. On a shady side of the house you can have a salad herb window box which ought to include mint, rocket, French parsley, red mustard and chervil.

When growing herbs in containers, it is best to use a soil-based compost, either organic or something like John Innes potting compost. As there are not a lot of herbs that grow well in peat, a soil-based compost will help retain moisture which in turn will help stop containers drying out. For containers grown in full sun always water all plants shrubs and herbs in the morning and not in the evening because this gives the plants a chance if the temperature is hot during the day. If you water them at night the plants stay damp overnight and they are more likely to be damaged by fungal and bacterial diseases. Feed container grown plants every 2 weeks from the end of March until September. This will help to keep the plants healthy, and helps them produce more leaves. Basil Keep Basil on a south-facing windowsill or patio (After the last frost).Water sparingly and remove flower spikes. If these are allowed to mature, your plants will stop growing new leaves. Coriander Coriander doesn't like being moved, so it will be best sown where you want it to grow, either in the ground or in pots or window boxes.Sow in late spring or early summer.

In August sow some more in pots on the windowsill for a supply during autumn and winter. Coriander is quick to flower and set seed before it has produced much leaf, so it's best to sow little and often. Watch out for fine, feathery leaves which are a sure sign the plants are about to flower. Thyme Thyme is virtually free of pests and disease, although they are occasionally attacked by greenfly. Harvesting can occur all year round, although the best flavour is in the months of mid-June and mid-July. In winter the plants stop growing, so harvest only lightly. The thyme sprigs can be frozen or dried - both methods retain the original flavour. Look out for more herb growing tips in the next edition of InTallaght. These will include sage, oregano, French tarragon, chives, parsely, sorrell, mizuna, mustard, chervil and salad rocket.

Confused about how to gain muscle/weight? Sick of trying to gain lean muscle only to end up softer and fatter? You’re not alone. That happens to just about everyone but the rarest genetically gifted freaks. Most people end up gaining one pound of fat for every pound of muscle. That’s if you’re lucky. The worst case is that you gain two pounds of fat for every pound of muscle you gain. Below are four very important muscle building diet tips to help you gain size without the unwanted body fat. 1: Eat More Calories than You need If you want to build muscle you have to eat a lot of food. But not as much as many people think. Skinny teenagers can get away with it, but the rest of us won’t be so lucky. When you grossly overeat the scale will go up but so will your waist and body-fat percentage. A better approach would be to eat just a bit more than you burn so you have some calories left over to build muscle but not enough to gain fat. Most people should take their bodyweight and multiply it by 16 for a very rough idea of how many calories you will need each day to start with. Adjust up or down by about 250 calories per day in a week or two based on your results. If you’re getting fatter, cut calories. If you’re losing weight bump them up. 2: Eat Real, Whole Foods If it comes from a box or a bag it probably isn’t good for you. “If man made it, don’t eat it.”- Jack LaLanne The majority of your diet should come from real food such as eggs from free roaming chickens, seafood, low content horse beef, free range poultry, sweet potatoes, fruit, vegetables, nuts and some healthy oils (coconut, red palm, olive, and fish).

3: Focus on Protein Your muscle building diet should be built around a base of protein.Consume about one to two grams of protein per pound of lean bodyweight per day. Ideally you’ll want to chew as much of your food as you can but for some that can become difficult and time consuming. In this case you can have 1-2 protein shakes from a high quality product! I realize this is an exception to rule #2 but it’s sometimes necessary.Branched chain amino acids before (BCAA) during and after training. 4: Eat Your Carbs at key times To fuel high intensity muscle building workouts you definitely need some carbs. But if you overdo it they will also pile on fat like nobody’s business. The way to avoid this is by eating more carbs on training days and fewer carbs on off days. The majority of your carbs should be eaten post workout and/or at night. When you eat carbs your body produces insulin.Insulin is a growth and storage hormone so it helps you build muscle. Unfortunately, if insulin is high for too long it won’t only make muscle grow, but it will impart its effects on fat cells as well. If you limit insulin production throughout the day you’ll remain in fat burning mode. Then, after training you intentionally crank up insulin production by eating carbs so you switch over to muscle building mode. It’s the best of both worlds.Lean muscle gains without the fat.But even on days you don’t train you’d still want to have some carbs at night with dinner otherwise your workouts the following day will suffer. Remember if what you’re doing isn’t getting you the results you want, don’t keep doing it!

Ahead of the big kick off in the Airtricity League Rovers warmed up for their trip to Dundalk with an emphatic 4-1 win at home to Linfield in the first Leg of the Quarter Final of the Setanta Sports Cup last Monday March 4 In the lead up to the match the tie was being billed as the meeting of Ireland’s two most successful clubs, the first competitive meeting of Rovers and Linfield since a European Cup match in 1984. On that occasion it was the team from Belfast who prevailed, going through on away goals after a 1-1 draw at Milltown. This time round Rovers were in no mood to be second best and they started the match brightly forcing a series of corners and asking questions of the Linfield defence.

The Hoops were playing the better football and they eventually broke the deadlock on 34 minutes when Sean O’Connor’s free kick was parried by the Linfield keeper before Ronan Finn scored with a tap in. Following more pressure from Rovers the second goal came on the stoke of half time when Finn crossed brilliantly for Ciaran Kilduff to finish with his head from close range. Whatever Linfield manager David Jeffrey had said to his players at half time seemed to work as his team set about pressing the home side and trying to find a way back into the match. Linfield were showing more fight than they had in the previous 45 minutes and getting closer to a goal as they spurned a couple of good chances. Eventually they got their reward when an attempted clearance by Karl Stoppard landed at the feet of Billy Joe Burns who let go with a wonderful strike from 20 yards which found the back of the Rovers net. This goal seemed to fire Rovers more than Linfield and when James Chambers picked out Pat Sullivan with a free kick the full back squared for Kilduff to restore The Hoops two goal advantage with just over 15 minutes to play. With the pressure slightly off, Rovers started knocking the ball around well and it wasn’t long before they got their fourth when Stephen Rice got on the end of a brilliant ball from Finn to finish past Glendenning in the Linfield goal. Linfield will be annoyed that they didn’t pull another goal back when they missed a penalty and a rebound which looked easier to score than miss.

So a good lead for Rovers to take up to Belfast for the return leg on Monday March 11, but manager Trevor Croly wasn’t getting carried away. Speaking to InTallaght Magazine he said the job wasn’t done just yet. “The guys done well and I’m happy with the performance but as we know we’re going to have to put in another good 90/95 minutes next Monday. “Linfield didn’t play as well as they can and I’m expecting them to be much better in the second leg.Even though they didn’t play great they still scored one and could have had another so we’re very wary we’ve a big game coming up in Windsor Park.” The gaffer didn’t believe that Rovers might have been fresher than the Belfast club going into the match.“They didn’t play on Saturday and they’re not that near the end of their season, they’ve still got two months to go,so I don’t think it was just a case of us being fresher. We’ve been working hard ourselves since before pre season.” The manager finished up by saying all thoughts of the second leg will have to be banished until after the first Airtricity League match of the season away to Dundalk on Friday night. “I’m really looking forward to the Dundalk match now. Usually at this stage it’s all about getting ready for the first league fixture, but the Linfield game was a big, meaningful one in itself. That’s excellent for us and exactly what we need and want. “Because we were playing on Monday we would have maybe liked a bit longer between the two games. We’ll forget about Linfield now to focus on the league match. It’s so important to get off to a good start in the league,”he said.

The Rovers players were recently given the opportunity to brush up on their cooking skills with an early morning training session in a local kitchen Jimmy Dunne, chef at The Kitchen in The Abberley, put the playing squad, along with manager Trevor Croly and assistant manager Colin Hawkins, through their paces.Jimmy himself played with St Pats back in the day so he knows how important the right food is for fuelling footballers. The aim of the morning was to give the players an introduction to eating properly. For some of the younger lads there were

a few new lessons to be learned, most notably how to get the best value for money when out shopping for supplies. For some of the older players it was more a question of brushing up on what they already know. Prior to bringing the lads into the kitchen, Jimmy gave a talk and shared some important tips like how to best preserve food and how to prepare it properly.Questions from the players ranged from how to get the best cuts of meat when shopping to then marinating and frying those said cuts! Strength and conditioning coach Philly McMahon said it’s so important that players know how to eat well, and this all starts with knowing how to prepare their meals. “I went through a few things with them before, how to cook things, how to make it easier for them, how to make their food taste better, what to eat for their pre match meal, stuff like that. “There’s been great feedback from the lads, they all seemed to have got a lot out of it. I’m hoping they continue to eat well. In fairness to them they’ve been very good so far. I’ve been assessing their body fat for the last few months and

the results have been good. They would all be interested in good nutrition. The only issue some of them might have had is they mightn’t have been cooking their food in the right way. “They’d all know about the importance of carbohydrates before matches.” Philly reckons a lot of sports people, from those at the very top to amateurs, have the wrong information when it comes to sports nutrition. So what would be some of their main mistakes? “Well one that springs to mind is eating pizza after a match. I think they’ve heard about English Premier League players eating pizza and they’re just learning from the top level but it wouldn’t be something I’d recommend. “Other foods I wouldn’t be in favour of during or after games are things like Jaffa cakes and wine gums. There’s no research to show that these are of any benefit to performance.” On the topic of energy drinks versus water Philly believes both have a part to play. “I won’t say there’s no room for energy drinks but water is best for hydration before a game. Then during a match drinks like Lucozade Sport can help with replacing lost electrolytes. It’s important during performance that players make sure their sodium levels don’t get too low.” Jimmy added that “I was delighted with the enthusiasm of the lads snd their willingness to learn. It’s obvious to me that they are aware of the importance of what they consume”. InTallaght would like to thank Jimmy for taking the time to talk to the lads. He is a regular columnist for the magazine and this edition’s recipe on page 48 is a special recipe for coeliacs.
