The National Children’s Hospital,Tallaght, cares for over 65,000 babies, children and adolescents from all over Ireland It is also a centre for extensive research into children’s health and related diseases; and a major teaching resource for doctors and nurses wishing to specialise in paediatric care. In June 1998, the National Children’s Hospital moved from its site in Harcourt Street to Tallaght, where it continues to focus on the special needs of children and their families. Ciara O’Grady spoke to InTallaght about the role the Fundraising Department plays in the care of children and families who attend The National Children’s Hospital,Tallaght. “We are a small team and we work on the year-long calendar of events and fundraising campaigns that we organise from the office. Luckily we have a huge support base and many of our fundraisers arrange events independently, who we try to support as much as we can. “Our year kicks off with the National Pancake Party in February and then the 98FM Care4Kids Radiothon follows in March. We have a wonderful team of ladies who take part in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon in June and this year we are delighted that The Square Shopping Centre have partnered with us to support this team of fundraisers. “For Easter, Ann Carthy and her team of knitters sell knitted Easter Chickens, complete with Egg Cup and Crème Egg in the hospital atrium, the Square Shopping Centre and in office reception areas throughout Dublin. We also hold a Golf Classic, monthly coffee mornings in Avoca Rathcoole and a number of Christmas Campaigns.” Whilst the Government pays for the day-today running of the Hospital, they have always relied on public-support to provide the best possible care for their young patients.Ciara said all support from the public, no matter how big or small is greatly appreciated by the hospital. “Thanks to our dedicated supporters, funds raised allow us to continue to enhance the services and facilities available at The National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght. This includes purchasing vital equipment, supporting research and development into new treatments, as well as providing small comforts for children during their stay in Hospital. “We keep our website and our facebook page up to date with what is going on and we would love if the InTallaght readers would ‘Like’ us!”
Ciara O’Grady At The 98FM Care4Kids Radiothon Here are some examples of how money may be used in the hospital: €50 could provide DVDs for the outpatients department to help keep children entertained during treatments. €100 could provide seasonal decorations for the wards creating a comforting atmosphere for the children at Christmas, Easter and Halloween time.
Claire Talking To Dermot Bannon
€200 could provide a bright and colourful mural in one of our treatment rooms €400 could provide for a spaghetti play table. €600 could fund the purchase of a Resuscitation Baby used to educate parents, families and carers in appropriate CPR for young babies. €1000 could fund the purchase of a hand-held pulse oximeter – these are used in the Children’s A&E department and throughout the wards to quickly assess the breathing and heart rate of small children. €2500 could fund the purchase of a diabetes control analysis machine enabling control and adjustment of insulin. €3000 could fund the purchase of paediatric-specific physiotherapy equipment for children with weight management issues, cystic-fibrosis and young orthopaedic patients.
Gary, Ava, Georgia and Joshua Getting Ready To Flip For Fun
€7000 could fund the purchase of an ambulatory blood pressure monitor, used to assess the extent of cardiovascular risk in young children and adolescents presenting to the hospital. €10,000 could fund micro surgery equipment for use in the endoscopy department making procedures less invasive and ensuring they require less time to recover from.
The 2012 Easter Chicks Appeal Raised €22,918
€50,000 could fund a research fellowship, which would facilitate further understanding of many childhood illnesses.

Peter Coonan has recently shot to fame with his brilliant performances playing gangster Fran in hit TV show Love/Hate His latest project sees him take on one of the main roles in the soon to be released new Irish movie King Of The Travellers. InTallaght Magazine met up with the talented young actor to discuss his career to date, his new movie and his plans for the future.
So Peter tell us all about your new film? It’s called King Of The Travellers. I play a character called Mickey The Bags Moorehouse who is adopted into a Traveller family. He’s trying to convince himself and everyone else that he’s a Traveller. It’s the second film from Mark O’Connor, who I worked with before on Between The Canals. This is a different film in a sense that it’s a bigger film, there was more money put into it. It’s also based on the Traveller Community; people have said it’s kind of a Shakespearean twist on the Traveller feuds between the two Traveller families in the story.90% of the cast come from the travelling community including main cast and extras.
Very much so,Mark and myself worked very closely together on Between The Canals back in 2009. We went around looking for locations and actors in the north inner city, we’d go in and audition people in Sheriff Street.I knew he always wanted to write about the Travelling Community and he’d put the story together and wrote this character Mickey The Bags for me,which is obviously a great thing to have if you’re a working actor. It was great to work with Mark on the script. Once the script was done we went to Michael Collins and the Traveller Community. We developed the script with Michael to make sure the language was authentic, that they sounded like Travellers, that it would all make sense. The first day we had auditions for Travellers, Mark had put the word out that there was a film being made about the Travelling Community, he was expecting 40 or 50 max but 200/300 people turned up! He wasn’t ready for that! That showed the outpouring of support for the film. It was brilliant to work with Travellers. To understand how they live.Their openness.I learned about how they miss the road and the old ways, the background of their cultural life and the importance of Travellers. I spent two and a half weeks living with a Traveller family in a trailer, washing with a bucket every morning. I loved it, was a great experience. Christy, the lady who I lived with, is John Paul’s (lead actor in the film) Granny. She’s such a lovely woman; I got on great with her. She’s such a really caring person, she told me how she had taken a guy in who was in trouble with drugs and helped him.
Is it true you’ve started filming the fourth series of Love/Hate? Yes it’s true; we’re shooting all over the shop! I think it’s going to be back on TV in October.
The fact that you’ve worked with Mark Is Dazzler dead? before, you must have a good working relationship? I don’t even know!

Could you tell us a bit about how you got into acting?
with Aiden at the time.He went to see Between The Canals and he really enjoyed it, told me I’d represented a part of Dublin life really well. He emailed me after telling me to “keep up the good work”which was such a nice thing to do; he didn’t have to do that. When someone like Aiden says he thinks your work is good it gives you hope for the future. I saw him at Christmas and he said he loved the last series.
What’s your favorite film?
I got into it because my mother, Lord have mercy on her, was an actress, so I’ve been surrounded by it since I was five or six. She got my brother and myself into a drama school, Ann Kavanagh out in Rathfarnham. I used to go following my mother around, doing the amateur drama festivals around Dublin and down to Athlone.I was basically brought up in it! It was always something I wanted to do, I did enjoy it but when you’re really young you don’t know what you want to do. It was either that or football. I did that for years until I was about 16.Then it was that or try and get on the senior football or hurling team in Coloiste Eanna. Like any young lad I chose sport!
Do you have much input into Fran’s character development?
What’s the hardest part of your job?
Then I went to college and didn’t really do much drama until I was 21/22 when I started to get back into doing plays. I did a play with a group called the La Touché Players; the script was called Cause Celebre. I found the script again recently and it turns out my mother had played the part of the person I was having an affair with in the play years before! That kind of got me the bug back so the following year my friend Stephen Jones was writing a play and he wanted me to play the lead part. That went well, got awards and stuff then Mark (O’Connor) came and saw the play and asked me to come for an audition for Between The Canals, from that I got Love/Hate and from Love/Hate I got King of the Travellers.
Yes I do.Stuart (Carolan Love/Hate writer/creator) is brilliant like that; he gives us all a lot of input into the whole process. The hair, the clothes Fran wore. In the last series Fran had just got out of jail so he would have had less money than he had in the second series when he had all the golf and designer gear.Sometimes you don’t always get that chance to give your opinion like that.To be able to talk to the creator of the show is brilliant.
Was there much partying among the cast between filming?
Because you joined Love/Hate in the second series was it very intimidating Who has inspired for you coming you? in as the new guy? Were there any cliques among the cast?
No we wait till the end when it’s all over! There are long days of working involved and sometimes you might only be doing scenes with two actors all day.You keep the partying to your friends!
Daniel Day Lewis, an obvious one for any actor, he’s the top dog when it comes to that stuff. Also the likes of Gary Oldman,Phillip Seymour Hoffman,Leonardo Di Caprio. From a theatre point of view an actor called Vicelli O Rourke. He was one of the few guys I looked up, he never went pro. Stephen Brennan as well.
There were no cliques but it was intimidating, it was daunting to come in.I’d watched the first series as my friend Killlian Scott was in it. I’ve known him since we were very young so I was watching it thinking“I have to get involved in this.”At that point I didn’t know how it all would pan out. I had watched The Wire religiously so getting to work with Aiden Gillen was daunting. Also Robbie,Tom and Killian are such great actors as well. Once you get in there you have to think “You’re here on merit” and just get on and do your work. The lads were so welcoming, all their doors were open, they all told me to knock in and ask them if I had any questions. Aiden Gillen was so genuine, as they all were.I was doing a lot of scenes
Oh, there’s a few. True Romance, The Big Lebowski, Goodfellas, In The Name Of The Father.
The time in between jobs waiting around. It’s tough after you’ve done an audition, sitting around waiting to hear. Waking up every day wondering, every time your phone rings thinking “Is this it?” Apparently according to other actors you get used to it.
Would you like to eventually work in Hollywood? Well you have to aspire to bigger things but it would obviously be something that would interest me. At the moment I’m just getting through the Love/Hate thing. After that I might look to London or L.A,we’ll see.First of all I want to build up a good body of work in Ireland. There’s a natural progression that comes with it, you can’t force it.
What do you love most about your job? Creating characters, building backgrounds and different parts of characters. Also working with other actors, the spontaneity of working with good actors, seeing the sparks fly, seeing it after when no else is around. Also working with great directors and then bringing it to life.
What directors would you love Have you been doing to work with? much theater lately? In the last few years I haven’t much, it’s something I love, I can’t wait to get back into it. I did the 24-hour plays in January. It was daunting, frightening, you only get a few hours to learn the script. There’s no take two.
Mike Leigh, Ken Loach, the Cohen Brothers, Scorsese, Lenny Abrahamson, Jim Sheridan - who’s one of the best storytellers out there.

Any funny stories from your career so far? Once when we were shooting in Liberty House for Between The Canals we were outside the flats on the third level. I was standing there with the shaved head and my teeth out shouting down to the lads. Next thing this aul one, who couldn’t see the camera, comes out and says “What are ya doing here?” I said “We’re shooting a film” and she says, “You’re not shooting anyone around here young fella.”I said “No look there’s a camera” and she goes “I don’t give a boll*x” and slams the door! Two years ago, around Christmas time, during season two of Love/Hate I was walking down Baggot Street just chillin’ and this motorbike courier pulls up beside me, pulls off the helmet and says“Watch out for that John Boy, he’s wearing a bullet proof, get him up here.” (Points at chin) Ah yeah cheers for that, thanks for the info mate!
Do you get much attention from the public when you’re out and about? A little bit but I don’t mind, it’s good craic. It could be worse, they could be slapping me about the place.
Where would you like to see yourself in five years time? I’d like to be busy all year round.I’d like to be living in a place like New York. It’s hard to say. I’d like to have worked with some of the directors I named earlier on.
What do you think directors look for in an actor? First and foremost they want to know that they can work with them on a personal level. Secondly someone who’s willing to put the work in. The director needs to feel that they can work with the actor, that they can take direction, take criticism, that they can understand each other. Also they would hope that the camera likes the actor.
How did you feel to be nominated for an IFTA for best supporting actor? It was great. It was unexpected that I got named. The category was so strong; to be named in such great company was a real honour. We’ll get back next year! It was good craic on the night. Andrew (Scott) who won is a great actor, I know him growing up so I was happy for him. My Dad sitting beside me was more disappointed than I was! It was lovely to be there.
What do you think you would have done if you weren’t an actor? Salesman, teacher, barrister! I don’t know, my Da wanted me to be an accountant.
What has been the highlight of your career so far? Probably getting the part in Love/Hate, it was huge and such a great buzz.Just even getting the call from my agent was brilliant. Although he tried to wreck my head, before telling me I got it he said “I’m really sorry…but you’re gonna be busy for the next few weeks!”
Finally Peter what advice would you have for any young actors who want to make a career for themselves in the industry? If you’re in college try and get into your drama soc,try and find jobs with theaters where you’re going to be in contact with actors. Send off CVs, headshots etc. and keep doing as many plays as you can.If it’s not working out try something different.

If you could work with any band in the world who would that be? Muse,I think everyone in the band would love to work with Muse because they play very guitar based music with pop melodies.I saw them in concert a few months ago and they were brilliant, we’d love to work with them.
How long did it you guys to Laura Walshfrom take Glenview is the lead record the single? singer in Tallaght based group Just No
A few months. We initially recorded it a few months back but we weren’t happy with is as the tempo was too slow so we went back and increased the tempo. We recorded it in Block C studios.
The band recently released their debut single Where You Come From, which we reviewed in our last edition. InTallaght Magazine caught up with Laura for a chat.
How did you meet? The bass player and myself went to school together and my Dad knew the drummers Dad so we all know each other fairly well.
How would you describe your sound?
Tell us how you came to play to a full house in The Academy? We did a cover of Gotye's hit Somebody I Used To Know for Block C Live and we got over 80,000 views on YouTube, which earned us a place on the main stage in the Academy. Block C studios is great for emerging bands, you get to do a lot of covers and it gave us good publicity. The Academy is a lovely venue and it was sold out the night we played, it was a great experience for us as a band.
Indie or alternative rock I suppose.
How do you write your songs? We all share in the songwriting. In general I’ll bring a song to the band and they’ll then work out the parts, the melody etc.
What bands have inspired you? Muse and the Killers would be the two main ones.
Was this the biggest gig the band has played so far? No we played in the Olympia in November. We were supporting The Last Waltz. It was insane! It was so surreal; it’s such a gorgeous venue with a huge backstage area. We had a lot of our own people in the crowd; a lot of family but the reception from the rest of the crowd was excellent. It was a really good gig; we can’t wait to play the Olympia again.
Any plans for an album? Yes absolutely. Once we get the single out there we want to record an album in the next few months then work on getting radio play. After that we want to go gigging outside Dublin, hopefully the UK and down the country.
Have you ever played outside of Ireland? Yes we did, we played in Spain last summer.Where it was I can’t remember! We were over there for 3 weeks and we played a few gigs in some Irish bars, it was a lot of craic! The crowds in the pubs were going mad for it! Our manager has a house over there so he thought it would be a good idea for us to go over and gig. We thought it would be a good idea as well!
Are you guys with a label yet? No not yet. At the moment we’re looking for a PR company to handle that for us so if there are any PR people out there looking for work get in touch!
What do you think of the Irish music scene at the moment? I think it’s more competitive than ever because of the sheer amount of bands. And they’re all really really good! I think there’s a folkie rock trend at the moment; I suppose that’s because of the success of bands like Mumford and Sons, Kodaline and Little Green Cars all playing harmony-based music. Because of the high standard it makes it very hard for new bands to get attention.
How important is social media for new bands? Facebook is huge for bands, it’s an absolute priority but it also means everyone can be heard, which makes it even more competitive! We’ve had a band Twitter account for the last two years but we’ve only recently started posting on it. Well one of the lads had been posting stuff like videos of Miley Cyrus and Oprah, which were nothing to do with the
InTallaght_Edition32Master_Layout 1 20/03/2013 16:05 Page 21
21
rest of us! With the huge amount of bands out there there’s probably too much selection for people. Because of this I think it’s so important for bands to pay attention to their image, I don’t think enough bands do. That and really practice! There’s nothing worse than hearing a band that’s not musically together. You have to really practice to sound tight. We rehearse 3 times a week and play 2 gigs so we’re playing our set 5 times a week. I think we’re fairly tight by now, we’d want to be!
Have you ever entered X Factor or The Voice? No I haven’t,it’s not the kind of recognition that I’d personally want. I can understand why people do it, I know a lot of people say they’d like to skip a few steps but if you’re successful in those shows you’re surrendering your freedom, you’re not in control of your career. I suppose it all depends what makes you happy.
What has been your favourite gig with the band so far? Well the Olympia gig I was telling you about earlier would be one and the other would probably be the Ruby Sessions gig we played in Doyle’s at the start of March. The whole atmosphere in the place is amazing, the guy who organises it even tells people to shut up if they’re talking while a band is on! Which is great!
Has living in Tallaght inspired your music? I suppose subconsciously it has.We all appreciate living in Tallaght, I think the reputation it has is unfair as I’ve never experienced anything bad in the place and the people are lovely.
Finally Laura, what’s next for Just No? We’re looking into some festivals for the summer at the moment. We’ll be playing at the Festival Of Fires inWestmeath in May and we’re waiting on one or two more to be confirmed.
For more on the band and to keep up to date with what they’re up to, like them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/justnoband

Hi Everyone, This is the fifth issue of the Square Magazine in 2013; it’s hard to believe that a quarter of the year has already gone. The days are getting longer, and it’s great to see everybody with a ‘spring’ in their step. We hope you all had a great St. Patrick’s day last weekend, the highlight of which for me was watching the Irish ladies rugby team complete the grand slam and win the six nations for 2013.This coupled with the success of Katie Taylor has made it a great year for ladies sport so far. The people who produce InTallaght Magazine tell me that the last edition had over 50,000 readers online, although they seem to put it down to The Script being on the front cover, not my insightful musings in the centre pages. Congratulations to Holly-Rose Sheridan, Heather Connell, Paul Smith, Michael Newton and Amy Kearns who each won a €100 gift cards for their respective mothers in our Mother’s Day giveaway on Facebook. It seems that at this time of the year that the special occasions come thick and fast, we are only over mothers and St. Patrick’s Day and now Easter is already here!
There’ll be plenty going on in The Square this Easter Saturday for the little ones, when Mr. Rabbit and his furry friends will be having a Teddy Bear’s Picnic. Read on for more details on page 24. Boots Store Manager Martin & Dedicated Store Staff & Today FM Presenters
Boots Shave or Dye for Irish Cancer Society Kind hearted staff from the Boots on Level 2 of The Square took time out on Saturday to raise much needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society, which is the charity of choice for Boots in 2013.
McPaddies Day
Martin the store manger was quick to heap praise on his staff who dyed their hair for the annual Shave or Dye campaign which is backed by Today FM.
Ronald McDonald could not make it but there was plenty of fun in McDonalds on Level 3 last Saturday to celebrate St Patricks day.
Today FM's Shave or Dye is an annual charity drive to benefit the Irish Cancer Society. Each year, thousands of listeners get their friends and family to sponsor them to shave or dye their hair in the name of a great cause, with Today FM staff and presenters doing likewise. By shaving and dyeing their hair, participants are showing their support for the many thousands of people who are going through, or have gone though, cancer treatment themselves. Since they began in 2010 Today FM's Shave or Dye has raised over €4.5 Million for the Irish Cancer Society thanks to the generosity and spirit of the Irish public.
Along with their now traditional Shamrock Shake, which we were disappointed to find out does not actually contain Shamrock, there was face painting and balloons for the kids. The friendly staff in McDonalds are brilliant on occasions like this and are always willing to get into party mode!

Burt Wonderstone & Anton Marvelton are a successful magic act in Las Vegas. Their partnership comes to an end when Anton is injured by Burt during their hotbox trick, and Anton moves to the Far East When Burt is overshadowed by popular street magician Steve Gray, he must convince Anton to return to the act to regain his standing by any means necessary. The movie begins in the early 80’s when a then young Burt is the target of the school bullies and finds himself alone and unwanted by even his own mother who is always busy working. With his mother again unable to get off work on Burt’s birthday, she leaves him a wrapped gift to open. Inside is a magic box set by the wonderful magician Rance Holloway. From the moment he sets his eyes on the set Burt knows he now wants to be a magician. Next day in school while he is being taunted by other students for his tricks Anton Marvelton takes a seat beside Burt and watches in amazement as to what Burt can do.The pair strike up an instant friendship and that evening they head home to Burt’s house to plan ideas for more magic tricks. The movie then fast tracks on from when the two lads were young to a theatre where they are the headline of a show, and have clearly made it to the big time. One thing is quite obvious though, their great friendship seems to have almost disappeared.Anton appears to still love the tricks and the partnership with Burt, but sadly Burt seems far removed and only has eyes on the dollar signs that are being thrown at him from wealthy businessmen. With signs of the double act struggling to get along a new magician becomes the most wanted to headline all major shows. His name is Steve Gray and he is a street magician with a number of dangerous acts that wow the public. Burt and Anton realise their reign at the top
may soon be over and come up with a plan to win back the public’s attention which ends in disaster, with Anton injured. Due to Burt’s actions the pair decide to call it a day and end their partnership as a stage act. Anton moves to the Far East to help children, which leaves Burt all alone in a normal world he knows very little about. After a tough few weeks living a normal life without the fame and money he had become accustomed to for so many years he decides to help out in a care home for the elderly providing them with entertainment. It is here he meets the one and only Rance Holloway, the man whose box set introduced Burt to the world of magic. Rance has no time for magic anymore and explains how the real magic has been lost due to certain shows and acts. Rance makes Burt realise that he lost sight of his love for magic and instead focused on the fame and money and due to these material things he in turn lost the only friend he had ever had: Anton. Overall I was very impressed with this movie it ticks all the boxes in regard to comedy with Carell and Carrey. We are normally used to seeing Steve Buscemi play more serious roles but he fits in perfectly as Carell’s right hand man. Alan Arkin is wonderful as the cynical Holloway, while Olivia Wilde is wasted as the token love interest. The plot is very simple but packed with many laughable moments, most of which are provided by Jim Carrey, a character clearly inspired by the stunts of David Blaine, with each one becoming more incredible and dangerous not to mention in some cases suicidal, than the last.

The Croods tells the story of the world's first family road trip.
particular his oldest daughter, Eep, falls for Guy. This quirky, imaginative stranger's search for 'tomorrow' is at odds with Grug's reliance on the traditions of yesterday.
The Croods is essentially a modern-day version of The Flintstones. But, unlike Fred,Wilma and the family, the Croods are completely isolated and live in their own safe little world, a cave.
Guy is a boy who is not as strong as the Croods but prefers using his brain and comes up with ingenious inventions, like fire or shoes. He is accompanied by a sloth-like pet. With Guy's help the Croods conquer their fear of the outside world and discover that they have exactly what it takes to survive.
When the family’s cave is destroyed, caveman Grug gets a rude awakening and is forced to leave behind the only world he knows. Grug and his family must embark on a comedy adventure into strange and spectacular territory in search of a new home.
The story tells of one family’s struggle to adapt to the outside world they know very little about and of one father’s determination to keep the traditions he had grown up with alive. It is a heart-warming tale of self-discovery and the importance of family.
As if patriarch Grug, didn't already have enough to handle, it goes from bad to worse when they encounter a stranger named Guy. The situation becomes even more complicated when Grug's family, in
This is certainly one not to be missed, and a great one to take the younger children to.The 3D effects are an added bonus too and certainly bring the Dreamworks cartoon to life.

Baby Boom It’s not often we get to see pictures of Imelda May’s beautiful baby girl Violet, but at the 16th Annual UNICEF Ireland Mother's Day Lunch atThe Four Seasons Hotel, little Violet got her first taste of the celebrity lifestyle. Mum to be Pippa O’Connor was also in attendance and displayed her fabulous growing bump. With her due date just around the corner the Irish model, who is married to TV presenter Brian Ormond, showed no signs of slowing down and looked as glamorous as ever. Another baby everyone is talking about is of course Sadie O’Driscoll. She made her Aviva debut to support dad Brian O’Driscoll at the last home game of the Six Nations. Amy Huberman braved the cold weather to support husband Brian from the stands as Ireland battled it out against France. She's only a few weeks old, but baby Sadie was also there for the match which is rumored to be Brian’s last home game in the green jersey. Speaking of rugby, Niall Horan who is part of global sensation One Direction was also in attendance at the match. Niall was thrilled when Brian O’Driscoll presented him with his very own No.13 Irish jersey emblazoned with his surname 'Horan" across the back. Later teenager Niall took to Twitter to say: "Amazing day at Ireland v France! Brian O'Driscoll ya hero!" The Mullingar native received a lot of abuse two years ago when he was spotted wearing an England top with his band members to a football game. That wasn’t the case this time and Niall seemed genuinely chuffed with his encounter with the Irish rugby legend
Charlie Sheen hits Dublin for Slash gig Mr Charlie Sheen himself took a short visit to Dublin for the Slash concert. The controversial actor was visiting the capital alongside his pornstar girlfriend Georgia Jones. Sheen kept his twitter account updated during the trip with pictures which clearly showed the Anger Management star was enjoying his trip to the emerald isle. Slash – whose real name is Saul Hudson – took to Twitter over the weekend to pay tribute to one of Ireland's icons: "Rory Gallagher would have been 65 today;Happy Birthday Rory! Fitting time to be in Ireland." Speaking to the Irish Independent,Gallagher's brother, Donal, said he was "delighted" with the tribute. "I'm knocked out by this but Slash has always been a good guy.He once jammed with Rory at a show he did in The Roxy in LA in 1991. Rory spotted Slash in the crowd and got him up for a few songs," Donal said. Rory Gallagher released 10 solo albums before he died of liver complications in 1995.

Tallafornia news So Tallafornia member Phil has always come across as a bit of a fool and a womanizer, but the 28 year old is adamant he’s nothing like his‘Mr Nasty’ TV persona who is obsessed with “pulling birds”, one night stands and adding notches to his bed post. I believe his behaviour on the show has done the Dubliner no favours and I feel he will be searching for his supposed “rose beneath the weeds” for a long long time yet. Kelly Donegan has been keeping her Twitter account updated with quite impressive body shots over the past few weeks. Kelly who swears by her new diet and exercise regime warns that it’s not for the faint hearted. From what I have seen she has done an amazing job and it’s clear to see she has worked extremely hard to achieve her toned stomach. The Go Gym that she references in her tweet is a new gym, started by her fellow Tallafornians Jay and her boyfriend Dave out in Greystones. The lads on the show have always been very into their fitness and building massive muscle and it seems they are attempting to capitalise on their 15 minutes of fame to attract attention to their new venture. Best of luck to them. From the photos on their Facebook page and the feedback so far from the twittersphere it seems to be a great addition to the Dublin gym scene.

Amelia Lily continues her recent success Party Over is the third single from her upcoming debut album Be A Fighter which will be released this month. We have reviewed a number of previous XFactor
Bublé has already sold more than 40 million albums world-wide His new album To Be Loved is the Canadian singer’s first album since his 2011 hit Christmas which, like his previous albums Crazy Love and Call Me Irresponsible spent weeks topping charts from here to America. To Be Loved features four original songs. After All one of these originals was co-written and performed by fellow Canadian Bryan Adams. The 10 covers are famous hits like To Love Somebody by The Bee Gees, Who’s Lovin’ You by the Jackson Five, and Have I Told You Lately That I Love You (the Elvis version, not Van Morrison’s). Actress Reese Witherspoon duets with Bublé for Something Stupid, and Bryan Adams,Naturally 7 and The Puppini Sisters are also guest artists. Bublé has always covered songs throughout his career, but he will always put his own spin on the original tracks. The one track on this album I was looking forward to hearing was the duet with actress Reese Witherspoon. Having starred in the award winning movie Walk The Line as June Carter, wife to Johnny Cash, we all knew the girl could sing but by God she proves any previous critics wrong with her stunning performance. The two really do the Frank and Nancy Sinatra classic duet justice.
contestants here who left the show and shot to fame instantly. Amelia is a slightly different case, the Middlesbrough native was initially eliminated from the series on the first live show, but returned weeks later as a wild card choice and finished in third place.Since then she went on to release her debut single, You Bring Me Joy, in 2012 which reached number two in the Singles Chart and attained top ten positions in three other countries.
Produced by Bob Rock, To Be Loved was recorded in Vancouver, BC, as well as Los Angeles. Commenting on the album, Bublé said: “My new record is about love, happiness, fun and yummy things.Getting to work with my friend and longtime collaborator Bob Rock (Call Me Irresponsible, Crazy Love and Christmas) who produced the entire album was very exciting. We’re a good team. I love the songs we selected this time out. It was also terrific working once again with my songwriting partners.” My favorite track of the album would have to be his version of Have I Told You Lately That I Love You featuring Naturally 7. This to me will be another Bublé classic. Although he obviously didn’t write it himself, his great flair for note and phrase decoration, obviously influenced by modern pop singers is evident throughout. It’s a song we all know as it’s been covered by many of the best including Rod Stewart but Bublé and Naturally 7, make the song sound to a naked ear almost unrecognizable from the original and previous covers. Speaking to Wall Street Journal he said :“On this record, I haven’t just written more songs. It’s really an edgier record,” he said.“I put myself out there because I was brave.I was going to have a kid and I felt like no one could stop me.The truth was there were bigger fish to fry and bigger things to be worried about than if it sold a zillion copies or if critics liked it or not.”
The song itself is quite like the music being released by Jessy J and the new pop sensation Rita Ora, yet in my opinion Amelia is a better vocalist. This is a drum and bass record mixed with a pop melody which would be at home in a Bieber track. The production is mammoth, but Amelia’s shouty voice is powerful enough to keep up with it.Her powerful voice is heard clearly from start to finish on this track as she belts out the lyrics. This is the best I have heard from Amelia in the past year including her XFactor performances. Her voice has certainly matured and I would compare her to a young Christina Aguilera in terms of vocal ability. I certainly feel this will be the track to see Amelia finally take number one, as some would say third time lucky and I do feel it will apply here for Amelia.

The Sony Xperia Z is the newest smartphone to hit the shelves from Sony Mobile The phone was announced by Sony at CES 2013.The Xperia Z comes with the Andriod 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Software but not the very latest version, though an upgrade is planned. This new smartphone is dust resistant and as the television advert shows a couple pouring a jug of water over this the Xperia Z the phone is water resistant and features full HD (1080p) display. The new slim design and the fact it can withstand whatever life throws at it the Xperia Z has people talking about Sony Mobiles again. The Xperia Z won the‘Best Smartphone' and ‘Best of Show' awards at CES 2013. It has only been a year since Sony released the Xperia S, its first mobile since splitting with Ericsson. But they have wasted no time in releasing a newer and more hi tech model. Like the iPhone 4 the Xperia Z has a panel of glass covering the back and with its buttonless front makes for a highly symmetrical look and feel. The 5 inch handset looks good
but is quite hard to hold and awkward to travel with. Sony have given The Xperia Z a unique selling point in that it is waterproof so you can submerge the entire phone in water without causing any damage whatsoever. So if you were sending a text and dropped your phone into the sink you could relax knowing that it will be fine. In regular use, the new Sony phone consistently lasts for a full day on its 2330mAh battery. That might include syncing Gmail and social clients persistently, listening to music, occasional web browsing, video playback, and gaming, though Sony has an extra trick up its sleeve to improve endurance even further. It’s called Stamina mode which is very useful because everybody wants a phone that won’t run out of battery half way through a phone call and the Stamina Mode is a good addition. The Xperia Z will not come cheap with prices starting at €600 for the top of the range model and the top of the range model is the only one which is waterproof. A cheaper option is the Sony Xperia ZL which uses the same hardware as the Xperia Z but isn’t waterproof and has a smaller frame. The Xperia Z is a very good phone. It has a great display,a very good camera with the waterproof feature adding extra durability. It may be a bit awkward to manage because of its size but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The battery life could be better but there is a Stamina Mode which boosts battery life which is a very handy feature.Over all it looks great easily the best Sony Phone to date and a match for any of the other Android phones out there at the moment.

The Crysis games have always been known for their graphics and Crysis 3 is no different The beautiful settings and slick combat system are just about enough to distract gamers from the somewhat average storyline.Crysis 3takes place 20 years after Crysis 2. New York City has become an overgrown wasteland where nature has taken over. Dilapidated skyscrapers litter the land and dense foliage covers what is left of roads and pavements. Players take on the role of Prophet who wants retribution from the CELL Corporation.Whilst clinging to the remnants of his humanity he is flanked by his sidekick‘Psycho’who has been stripped of his Nanosuit and is struggling to adapt to his new found vulnerability.
Similar to the earlier games, the Nanosuit allows you to cloak and engage an armour enhancement, both of which are subject to your energy bar that depletes the more intense your movements. As players progress through the game, the Nanosuit can be upgraded with a variety of loadouts.
The New York City Liberty Dome, in which the game is set, is a veritable urban rainforest teeming with overgrown trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers. Within the Liberty Dome, seven distinct and treacherous environments become known as the Seven Wonders.
The game also boasts an impressive multiplayer, offering a good variety of maps and clever twists on the standard game modes. One such mode is Hunter that involves two cloaked hunters against a squad of troopers. Each killed trooper then switches sides and becomes a Hunter until there is one, scared, lonely trooper left.
Their story is engaging if a little predictable in parts, and voice-acting is done well bar the few occasions where lips move to a different voice-over channel.
Crysis 3 is definitely worth getting hold of.The campaign is somewhat short but there’s plenty of excitement to be had with the multiplayer. There’s a reason that during its debut week of release, and the following week, that it was the best-selling game in the UK. Looks like it’s time to suit up again!
Fights are often carried out from far away with your tactical visor being used to tag enemies and objects of interest.Different arrow types are readily available and easy to interchange. These range from explosive tips, useful to wipe out groups of grunts, to those that deliver a lethal electric shock perfect for enemies unlucky enough to be wading through water.

Axed Star Wars game leaked
It would now also seem Star Wars 1313 might have trouble being launched because of licensing. The game which was due out this year is rumoured to be pushed back to next year at best.
Recently game website Kotaku announced that a leaked Star Warsgame had been found. The game, which now seems to be canned due to Disney’s purchase of Lucas Arts, was titled Star Wars: First Assalt.
In other news, The Clone Wars tv series has been cancelled. After five seasons and over 100 episodes they have decided to finish the series with the upcoming Star Wars Episode 7. But on a slightly better note, all the episodes that were finished for season 6 are not being canned. They haven't said how they're releasing them but said to keep and eye on starwars.com for updates on it.
It was to be an online only first person shooter multiplayer game that was due for release on Xbox live, PC and it seems Playstation 3 as well. The game pitted two eight man squads against each other: rebels versus stormtroopers. From the leaked screenshots battles seem to have been taking place on Tatooine and Bespin. From what I've seen from these images, the game looked amazing. For people who have played the Battlefrontgames, more bad news. It seemed First Assalt was meant to be a kind of 'predecessor' to Battlefront III.It was to show the studio that if enough sales were made that there would be sufficient interest to warrant the release of Battlefront III. Battlefront III was 99% ready according to the studio Free Radical who was developing the game, when Lucas Arts cancelled it. Ever since Disney bought the Star Wars franchise from Lucas Arts,a lot of Stars Wars works in progress have been encountering similar problems.
So even with Disney buying Lucas Arts and Episodes 7, 8 and 9 being made, which I am crazy excited about, it would seem that some of the smaller companies in the backround trying to add to their favourite movie series are getting stepped on by the media giant that is Disney.

Well from first glance the new Honda Civic looks quite similar to the old model While every Civic before has been revolutionary the design of the new version is more evolutionary. Believe it or not all the body panels are new, and the overall shape has also been slightly remodelled. Honda have always regarded themselves as the only car on the market that is a “sure thing”,meaning at times it may not always be the greatest of designs or as attractive as some of its rivals,or even be the most comfortable but it will certainly be a car that is dependable and reliable. The Civic is not a car calculated to appeal to the masses, even with its impressive new engine. The styling is polarising and you’ll equally love/hate the multi-display cabin with its mix of analogue and digital dials. It’s undeniably well made though, spacious and with those clever flip-up-fold-down rear seats, more versatile than most. And given Honda’s reputation for reliability, it should prove trouble free. Ireland was the first on the European market to sell the new 1.6 i-DTEC.The entry level price for the new Civic 1.6 i-DTEC is roughly €23,695 ex-works for the relatively high-spec SE grade which features class-leading equipment levels including alloy wheels, climate control air conditioning, CD with remote audio controls, six airbags, electric front and rear windows, and alarm and idle stop as standard.
ES and EX grades equipped with higher levels of specification make up the range. The new 1.6 i-DTEC,Tax Band A,diesel engine is the lightest engine of its type in the world and in the Civic produces just 94g of CO2 per km (well inside the current Band A for VRT and road tax).In terms of fuel consumption,it uses just 3.6 litres of fuel for every 100km driven, which equates to over 78 mpg. The Pros to this new model would certainly be the comfortable driving experience, while either being the passenger yourself or the driver. The spacious interior is an added bonus, plus this model will without doubt save you money on fuel. The cons, not many to point out, the only flaw I can see for the selling of the new Civic will be what has always been a talking point:the design. This is definitely the kind of model that customers will either love or hate. If you are a fan of Honda and in particular Civic I think this is the best design yet, but for some the design will be just too much.

Ireland seen as example to Eurozone The Yummy Mummy Market visits Tallaght A pair of stay-at-home mothers with young children have chosen to take on a challenge and try to help other parents survive the recession. Tina McNamara and Siobhan Farrell, who are both from Co Wicklow, run a unique mobile indoor market where mums and dads can sell on their good quality, second-hand baby and toddler goods to other mums and dads. Tina McNamara explained to InTallaght Magazine how the market works:“Launched in 2010 Yummy Mummy Market is a mobile indoor market where mums and dads can sell their good quality, secondhand baby and toddler goods to other parents. “The idea for the market came about after I had my first little guy. After he had grown out of a lot of his clothes I tried to sell them but it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. You couldn’t give the stuff away! I tried eBay and a few other things but I wasn’t really happy with any of them. “The markets have grown in popularity, and are held monthly in hotels across Leinster. They differ hugely from typical markets, with stallholders selling great brands of quality toys, maternity items, baby equipment and clothes of high standard.A number of craft and retail suppliers also display at each market. “Yummy Mummy Market donates a share of their

looks like this year could be the biggest one yet, with the expected increase in overseas visitors for The Gathering. The tourism sector has endured a difficult number of years and events like this are of significant importance and benefit to the economy". The Washington Post carries an extensive article last week headed "Is Ireland an economic example or an exception for the euro zone?" in which it examines our remarkable success in preparing for an exit from the Troika programme.: The country successfully sold longer-term government bonds Wednesday,a sign that international investors regard its rebound as durable and that it will end its reliance on an international bailout program later this year.It would be the first euro-zone country to achieve that milestone. The economy is growing - slowly - despite a regional recession. Employment and foreign investment are rising. Even as other European nations have considered slowing their drive to balance budgets so governments could borrow and spend more, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny has said the country will meet its promised European deficit targets in the next two years. In a telephone interview from Dublin, Kenny said the euro zone had been too often damaged by unmet goals for him to back off now. "You call it austerity in one country, fiscal discipline in another, the consequences are still challenging," Kenny said. In talks with international investors after taking office in 2011, he said the message was clear: Money would return when conditions in Europe became predictable again. "They said what we need from people is clarity and decisiveness and a horizon against which to plan," said Kenny, who visits the United States next week for St.Patrick's Day in New York and talks with President Obama."We went over the edge because of incompetence. We have tried to rectify that. It is working." Ireland's sale Wednesday of roughly $6.5 billion in 10-year bonds is noteworthy for several reasons: The decade-long term means investors are reasonably confident the euro zone will stay intact and Ireland will remain part of it. The interest rate of 4.1 % means the country is considered a better credit risk than much larger nations such as Italy and Spain. But it is not clear whether Ireland stands as an example for the rest of Europe or stands as an exception,an island nation that fell into and climbed out of crisis through a particular set of circumstances. Unlike the other bailout nations of Greece and Portugal, Ireland's public debt was at a healthy level before a collapse in its banking system led Kenny's predecessor to promise a rescue - and bankrupt the country paying for it.The country was not,in other words,hard-wired for high debt. And unlike nations such as France and Italy that have also hit the doldrums economically, Ireland's tight connection to the global trading system helped it restore growth while those other countries fell into recession... according to
The Washington Post.

Nines Photovoltaics close €750,000 funding deal The company based in the Synergy Centre on Tallaght IT campus has closed a €750,000 funding round led by Irish clean-tech investor Simple.ie. Nines Photovoltaics is a solar-cell technology company which aims to dramatically change the processes used to manufacture solar cells, reducing the production cost while also increasing cell efficiencies. The investment by Simple.ie comes through its Green Employment & Investment Incentive (EII) Fund and was supported by a number of key private investors, including the Irish State via Enterprise Ireland. Established in 2007, the fund has raised €6.3m to date and is the largest investor in Irish clean-tech early stage technology companies with its portfolio of 12. This brings the total funding raised by Nines Photovoltaics to date to more than €2.5m, including €1.2m through FP7 European Funding, which was announced in June 2011. Nines Photovoltaics is headed up by Edward Duffy, CEO, Laurent Clochard, CTO, and Simon Forsyth, CFO.The funding will be used to recruit additional staff and to build the
company's first industrial silicon wafer processing tool, which will house the disruptive technology that has been developed by the Nines Photovoltaics' team. “These are exciting times." Edward Duffy,CEO,Nines Photovoltaics explained.“We are innovating in a truly global market with enormous potential and are planning to export 100% of our products. " In addition to the cost savings, this technology will dramatically lower cell manufacturer's water consumption, enabling investment in the further scaling of their manufacturing facilities.Nines Photovoltaics is the first company to offer a processing solution, which uses a fully dry process using only Zero Global Warming Potential chemicals. Its technology will also assist in moving the solar industry closer to "Grid Parity" - a point where solar electricity can compete on level terms with electricity generated from the burning of fossil fuels. Commenting on the investment, Elliott Griffin, CEO, BVP Investments, the investment manager for Simple.ie, said: "We have been tracking their progress for the past two years. We believe the strength of the team and their trial customers based in the heart of the German solar technology industry is a very exciting combination."
It’s InTallaght’s 2nd Birthday... In business news extremely close to home, we at InTallaght magazine are celebrating our second anniversary this March. It’s hard to believe it’s been two years already since our first issue of InTallaght Magazine in March 2011. The time has flown by and we are so delighted that this issue takes us into the third year of publishing which started life as the Tallaght Directory back in October 2010. We started with an idea – to make a local magazine for Tallaght with positive stories highlighting the good things happening in the area as opposed to the negative stories wheeled out constantly by the national press. At the time it was a big call, everyone was saying print was dead and there was no chance of getting a new magazine off the ground in the middle of one of the worst recessions in the history of the country.Having dealt with most of the businesses of Tallaght while producing the Tallaght Directory, we as company felt we had an idea as to what advertisers wanted and how they wanted their message to be put across. We had to come up with a publication that would appeal to both readers and advertisers alike, something that ticked all the boxes and looked brilliant. With our collective backgrounds in graphic design, advertising sales and journalism we decided that InTallaght Magazine would be that product. In the last two years we’ve experienced many ups and downs and grown together as a company and as colleagues. A magazine, like anything, is a continual work in progress and we feel that we are moving in the right direction and the publication is getting better as we learn more.
From initially being a monthly publication InTallaght is now produced twice monthly and has increased in size over the last two years.Recently we have also revamped our website to make it more user friendly for advertisers and readers alike. Since we started this magazine we’ve covered many stories where the people of Tallaght have come together as a community to help out their neighbours and friends in their hour of need. This has only served to demonstrate the great community spirit that exists here in Tallaght and the generosity and kindness of the people of the area. We’d like to sincerely thank all our readers and advertisers who have supported us throughout the past two years, without you guys there wouldn’t be a magazine and we are ever so greatful. We must also acknowledgethe partnership we have with The Square Shopping Centre who share our vision which has enabled us to move the magazine forward in so many ways and we are just getting started. Our App which we have been promising is almost ready after months of late nights of programming, coding and arguing with Apple. InTallaght TV is also in the pipeline! We have really enjoyed making InTallaght Magazine and we hope to continue producing it long into the future. Happy Birthday to us!

A distinctly English debut novel I seem to find myself saying this a lot, but this isn't the kind of book I normally read. I like to broaden my horizons occasionally beyond the usual literary fiction that I tend toward and so decided to give, what Time Out called a "genuinely exciting urban thriller that makes you think as well as blink", a try. Released in the year 2000, this book is set in 1995, mostly in London. The main character Joshua Winter returns to England from Canada, where he has been living since his father disappeared twelve years earlier. As it says on the back cover, "His arrival provokes a trail of deception and murder." The opening section of the book lands you straight into a mysteriously fraught and dangerous situation. "A wood in darkness, empty city streets, a woman alone with a baby in a sombre room, and then the body of a man lying dead in my flat:the events of the past fortnight replayed themselves like a video nightmare controlled by an unseen hand. Since returning to London at the end of August my world had been turned upside down in search of a man I'd never really known. The choice seemed simple now: to run and keep on running,to run somewhere - anywhere - or to take my chance in the courts." This opening immediately drew me in.The narrative then rewinds to Joshua's arrival in England and where it all went wrong from there. The second narrative thread is that of Joshua's father in the time running up to his disappearance in 1983. These chapters are told in the third person, in contrast to Joshua's which are in the first person. I was born in 1983 so I can't vouch for the authenticity of Cowley's early 80s England but I felt a bit more at home in the main body of the story which is set in 1995, when I was 12. I appreciated certain cultural references and recognised quite a bit in how he described that period. The one thing that jarred with me was the fact that Cowley has most of his characters carrying mobile phones in 1995 when I'm not sure that would have been the case. Maybe Ireland was a bit slower to catch on but I don't remember mobiles being that widespread until the late 90s.However, I don't suppose it really matters and it did help certain plot points along at least. Joshua had just turned 12 when his father Anthony disappeared, though Tony, as he was known to his less salubrious business associates, had been slowly withdrawing from family life for a time before that. He had even got so far as to rent a flat in London where he stayed during the week, only returning to see his family in Poole on the odd weekend.Tony is a wheeler dealer who, with varying levels of success has dabbled in everything to property
development, a classified newspaper and was starting to get into the pornography game just before he disappeared. This was a time when the home VRC was becoming more popular and he and several other of his more entrepreneurial friends saw the possibility for making a lot of cash by importing foreign videos and selling them on at an exorbitant rate. There is an element of this smuttiness in the novel, as Josh gets sucked into the seedy underbelly by the people his father once knew. I found it quite hard to relate to Josh at times, though his obsession with finding out what happened to his father is quite understandable, given the circumstance of his sudden disappearance. Josh has a job set up in a law firm to start a few weeks after his arrival and he intends to do some research about his father until then. This mission becomes more and more important to him as the novel goes on and eventually leads to his slow descent into a complete loss of control. At times he is rather unlikeable, especially in his dealings with the opposite sex.The way he treats his love interest annoyed me,telling her what he knew she wanted to hear and then as soon as he was away from her, wondering if he cared about her at all. She plays a bit part, distracting our hero from his quest for the answers and I feel she or any of the other female characters, especially Joshua's Canadian mother could have been fleshed out a bit more. It left me feeling that it was quite a male novel, intensified by the violence that takes place in parts.Maybe I'm being a bit over sensitive but I felt like maybe I wasn't the intended audience for this kind of story. In all I found it a slightly unsatisfying book.As I was reading it I felt swept along by the different currents of narrative of the actions of both father and son. I'd hesitate to say that it wasn't well written or quite an interesting story, but I felt a disconnection with some of the events. I didn't really understand why or how some of the full story happened.I'd have preferred to have things a little more clearly defined and explained, especially toward the end. In this, Time Out is correct, it does make me think, though not in the way I'm used to and I suppose it's good to leave some uncertainties to the imagination sometimes.

I think that most women will agree that finding the perfect foundation is like searching for the holy grail! It is the most important tool in your make-up collection, because it's what helps give women the appearance of flawless looking skin, and it is a step that so many women get wrong. A foundation should not be used to change the colour of your skin. It is designed to create an even and smooth canvas - eliminating discolouration, blemishes and evening out skin tone. Therefore,it needs to blend seamlessly, so it's invisible to the naked eye and to avoid those unwanted tide marks! Foundation comes in so many different types, so identifying your skin type first is key.
and blue veins mean cooler undertones. If you can't tell, or have both, you are probably one of the lucky ones and are neutral! You can use the opposite tone to yours to cancel out shades in your skin that you don’t like - so if you have rosacea or blush easily you can counteract it with a yellow or neutral foundation but you do have to be careful with that.As a rule of thumb, typically pale Irish skins are cool/pink toned. If you tan easily, you are usually warm/yellow toned.
Oily - it is best to go for a powder, mineral or an oil free liquid
Testing it out
which has more of a matte finish.
So once you have found the formula and undertone, now you need the correct shade. What you shouldn't be doing is testing it on your hand, since after all,it will be worn on your face! Ideally have makeup free skin when you go to buy new foundation. Pick three shades and apply them in vertical stripes down your cheek to your jaw line. Check out the colours near a window or natural light. When you see one melt into your skin, it's a keeper! If you still have no luck, keep testing until you discover the one with the most soft and seamless effect.
Know your Skin Type
Dry or mature skin - a liquid or cream foundation is ideal which is more moisturising and will give either a matte or dewy finish, depending on what you prefer.
Combination - determine whether you are more dry or oily and go from there. Cream to powder works great on combination skin. Tinted moisturisers - great in hot weather or for people who don't particularly need much coverage. Finding a foundation with an spf is an advantage to help protect your skin from harmful UV rays all year round, but not essential.
Find your undertones This is something people can find difficult. Everyone has undertones or subtle tints of colour beneath their skin, and finding your undertone is essential in the quest to finding a foundation that blends perfectly. Generally, you either fall under having a pink undertone or a yellow undertone. With some people, you can literally see the yellow or pink tones in their skin. A good way to test it is by looking at the veins on the inside of your wrist.Green veins usually indicate warm undertones
Shopping around for the perfect foundation can feel time consuming and sometimes frustrating, but once you find it, you'll be glad you made the effort!

Ingredients 1 Leg of Lamb, 2½ kg,Well Trimmed Topping 2 tbsp Good Quality Mustard 2 tbsp Soy Sauce 1 Clove Garlic, Crushed 1 tsp Rosemary Leaves, Chopped 2-3cm Piece Of Ginger, Peeled & Grated 1 tbsp Olive Oil Cooking Time 85 minutes
Method Preheat the oven to 220°C (430°F) Gas Mark 7.Place the lamb in a roasting tin.Mix the mustard, soy sauce, garlic, rosemary and ginger together and then gradually stir in the olive oil to make a paste. Spread this mixture over the lamb and finally stud the joint with extra sprigs of fresh rosemary.
Put in the oven and roast for 20 minutes, then reduce the heat to 180°C (350°F) or Gas Mark 4 and continue to roast for another 50 minutes. The lamb will be cooked medium at this stage. Remove from the oven, wrap the lamb loosely in foil and allow to rest for 15 minutes before carving.
Serving Suggestions Roast some potatoes and red onions alongside the lamb. Simply peel and quarter potatoes and red onions and mix with a little olive oil, bay leaves and seasoning.Roast for the last 50 minutes in the roasting tin with the lamb. If you are a garlic lover, why not try roasting a whole bulb or two at the same time? Turn the whole bulb of garlic on its side, and with a sharp knife, cut off the top thirdrd of the bulb.Be sure to cut the top (pointed end), and not the bottom (flat, root end). Place each whole garlic on a piece of foil, about 8-inches square, with the cut side up.Drizzle one teaspoon of olive oil over the cut surface, and sprinkle with salt. Draw up the foil and wrap the garlic to seal. Roast for 45-60 minutes, depending on size, until the garlic is soft, and golden-brown. Remove from foil, and serve. In our last edition, we gave some advice on how, where and when you can grow herbs in your garden or on your windowsill. We didn’t have room for all the possibilites so here are a few more species that you might like to try out. Sage It can be very satisfying to raise sage from seed, but you have to be prepared to wait as it is slow to get started. Sow indoors in March or in April outside. The plants will grow very slowly and you will not be able to begin harvesting until the next year. So it is best to buy established plants .After the flowers die down, prune the plant to about half its size. Other than that, leave it to its own devices, but be careful in dry spells, resist the temptation to water a lot, sage prefers dry sunny conditions.
Chives Chives grow easily without much help but you do need to keep their immediate growing area free of weeds. Keep them well watered, particularly when the weather is hot. Pink flowers will grow on many of the stems. Honey bees, bumble bees, and native pollinators love chive flowers.Chive flowers are edible, and make a lovely garnish, but letting chives flower reduces leaf quality and production. Parsley Parsley requires a good amount of light and will do best when receiving around 7 hours of sun a day but can tolerate partial shade. After the first year parsley may start to produce seed at which point the plant is of no use for harvesting purposes.
Oregano The aromatic oils in oregano are a natural pest deterrent, making it relatively pest-free. As soon as the plant is several inches tall and has developed a couple of dozen leaves, it is okay to begin harvesting. It is best to harvest early in the morning while the oils are the strongest. At the end of the season, cut back the leaves and cover the area with mulch to protect the roots from the cold winter.
Sorrel Sorrel can be grown from seed or root cuttings. Sorrel likes full sunlight, so it is best to choose an area of your garden that will get full sunlight for most of the day.Once planted, sorrel will continue to yield for up to ten years. As the plant matures,it starts to produce reddish coloured flowers. It is very important to remove the flowers as soon as they appear so that the plant's energy goes toward leaf production.
French Tarragon French Tarragon cannot be grown from seed. The only way to grow this herb is to purchase the plant, plant in full sun or partial shade. It can be grown easily in a container. Tarragon can be grown also in hanging baskets.Tarragon has no serious pest problems.
Mizuna Mizuna or (Kyona or potherb mustard) is good to eat and also quite decorative, with glossy, ragged, dark green leaves and narrow white stalks. Keep cutting regularly to produce a continuous crop of small young leaves.
Mustard Mustard greens are ideal for containers because the plants stay quite compact and will provide a continuous harvest. Keep the pots well watered especially when it is getting hotter and the containers dry out faster. Chervil While most herbs do better in very sunny windows when grown indoors, chervil will do better in more indirect light.Outdoor pots can be kept on shaded patios or decks. It has lovely small white flowers at the end of the season. Keep it well watered at all times. It loves being kept moist. Chervil is seldom bothered by any insect problems. Salad Rocket Salad Rocket is easy to grow, indoors or out. It can be sown almost all year round. Just choose a sunny spot for your window box, grow it to produce young leaves, which can be picked after only 4 weeks.

It’s a movement that, as a child, you probably performed every day. Today, however, most of us have lost the ability to squat In gym terms it’s described as a compound, full body exercise that trains primarily the muscles of the thighs, hips and buttocks as well as strengthening the bones, ligaments and insertion of tendons throughout the lower body. Essentially, it’s the ability to sit down onto your honkers and stand back up whilst keeping both feet flat on the floor and not losing your balance or falling over. Squats are considered to be one of;if not the best exercises for both athletes and the general population (once no physical contra indication exists). Studies show that squatting can have a wide range of benefits:
• Faster running speed over short and long distances • Better sports performance on the field, court or in the ring. • Better functional mobility. • Greater bone mineral density (reduced risk of fracture) • Higher vertical jump. • A stronger core musculature resulting in toned abs (if body fat level is low) and reducing the risk of back pain and injury.
• Works the entire body as a unit when done correctly. Squatting is a difficult exercise to master so I recommend being properly assessed by an experienced, qualified and insured personal trainer before incorporating squats into your exercise regime. There are a host of issues that could hold you back when it comes to squatting and as such it is important that you focus on mobility and a thorough warm up before you start training. Common problem muscles are the gluteus, hamstrings, chest, lower and mid back, calves and feet.Having tight muscle tissue results in reduced mobility through the joints that they cross, in this instance ankles, hips and spine are affected. Restriction in any of these areas will affect your ability to squat correctly. How To Squat: 1. Stand with your feet between hip and shoulder width apart. 2. Brace your abdominal muscles. 3. Drop the knee forward as you lower the body as if you were going to sit in a chair. Keep the movement slow and controlled. 4. Stop when your legs are at least parallel to the floor or slightly below the knee. 5. Now press down onto your heels and engage your bum cheeks as you slowly rise back up to a standing position.

Tallaght Rugby After a brutally tough season Tallaght’s‘A’side finally had something to cheer about as they finished their league campaign with their first win. North Meath got the first score of the game early on when out-half Steve McManus kicked a fine penalty.Tallaght hit back though and when Ken McGovern took a quick-tap penalty close to the line skipper used his power to barge over for a try to make it 5-3 to Tallaght. The game was tight but then a moment of class from North Meath inside centre Ryan Tighe opened up the Tallaght defence with a break from inside his own half. Tallaght scrambled back but the damage had been done and full back AJ Gilsenan ran a fine support line to take the pass and score in the corner. McManus kicked the difficult conversion to make the half time score 10-5 to North Meath. In the second half, North Meath grew increasingly frustrated with the referee’s interpretation of the scrum and the breakdown. Eventually Ryan Tighe was sinbinned for dissent and when he returned, their number eight Darach Geraghty was also binned.Tallaght tried their best to take advantage of the extra man but poor handling in the wide channels let them down and several chances went begging. Eventually inside centre Willie Lambe timed his pass perfectly to Graham Byrne who powered his way through for a try. Out-half Danny Behan kicked an excellent conversion to give Tallaght a two-point lead. Thereafter Behan produced a masterclass of tactical kicking to pin North Meath back in their own half.He also attempted to seal the match with a drop goal to seal the win, but he was unfortunate to see it come back off the post. However it didn’t matter as Tallaght hung on in defence to get their first win of the season.
two tries ever, with Mathew Needham getting both of them. So all in all, it was a fine weekend all round for Tallaght Rugby Club. Proudly Sponsored By

At home on Saturday, our U21s played against visiting Australian side Narrabri Blue Boars. The Aussies were physically very strong, but were left in no doubt about our defensive qualities – there were more than a few bruises afterwards! Narrabri were fantastic guests, and we wish them well on their tour of Ireland, Scotland,Wales and England. To finish off the weekend in style,a huge crowd travelled back up to Ballycorus, this time to see the J1s play Old Wesley in a winner-takes-all match for the Section B title, and promotion to Section A. For the second time in 24 hours, a Terenure side took home a win from Ballycorus. Leinster Vice President Paul Deering was on hand to do the honours and present Terenure with their third pennant of the weekend. This was a weekend when all of the hard work put in since before the season started paid off,and everyone involved should be immensely proud of what was achieved. Six wins from six doesn’t happen by chance, and every team in the club will now be looking forward to the cup competitions, which start in the next couple of weeks. Ladies Slam Italians Terenure rugby achieves Triple league win Weekends don’t get much better on the pitch than this – a fifty point win, all sides in competition winning; and three league titles in 24 hours! At Towns Park in Midleton, the 1st XV continued their march towards 1B with a 52-14 win. Seven tries in all put paid to the home side’s chances of upsetting the league leaders. This was an important bonus point win, as both Corinthians and UCC picked up 5 points, so Terenure stay top of the pile on point’s difference. The next round of matches on March 23rd will go a long way towards shaping the final table, as UCC are not playing so wins for Corinthians or Terenure will push us further ahead. Also on Saturday, the J5s spoiled Bective’s party as they ground out a 10-9 win over the league winners in Lakelands. The J4Bs continued their recent good form, also beating Bective. Daragh Whelan’s team ran out 22-17 winners before dashing up to Ballycorus to see the J4As snatching the league title from Lansdowne in dramatic circumstances. While the J4As were winning in Ballycorus, the J2s were up against Old Wesley in Lakelands for the J2 Top 12 Section B title and won 39-27 in a hugely entertaining game.Emmet Wallace charged over for a first half brace under the watchful gaze of IRFU President Billy Glynn, who was highly impressed with the standard of rugby being played.Terenure opened up a commanding lead in the second half, but were pegged back by a dogged Wesley side, before a couple of late scores sealed the win.
In a season of firsts for the Ireland Women's squad, the afternoon of St Patrick’s day saw them add a famous Grand Slam and RBS 6 Nations title to the maiden Triple Crown they won last month. In terrible conditions in Milan they did what the men’s team could not do 24 hours earlier by defeating the Italians on a score line of 6-3.Two penalties from full-back Niamh Briggs guided the girls in green to their fifth win of the 2013 Six Nations. But they had to show tremendous discipline and grit in defence in the closing stages as Italy, gunning for an historic third victory of the Championship, threw everything at them. In the end, Ireland's impressive defensive record stood to them - they had only conceded two tries and 23 points in their previous four games - as they completed a historic clean sweep. It was a serious dog-fight and far from pretty, but St. Patrick's Day 2013 will certainly live long in the memories of all who were involved and great credit must go the RTE Sport for showing a ladies Rugby match live for the very first time.

David Elebert signed for The Hoops at the end of last month. A centre half who can play anywhere along the back four, David spent five years with Hamilton Academicals where he helped the club win promotion to the SPL and finish 7th in Scotlands’ top division, the clubs highest ever league finish After his spell with the Accies he spent a season in Iceland with Fylkir FC of Reykjavík prior to signing for Rovers. David has 3 U21caps for Ireland and captained the team in 2008.
How did your move to Rovers come about?
It was a case of I was home from Iceland last year and I knew Philly McMahon through a friend so I asked if it would be ok to come train with Rovers, just to keep myself fit, not with the intention of getting a move. I’d been training with the club since the start of December and the gaffer asked me would I like to sign so I was delighted to accept the offer. It’s good to be home, I’ve been away, in the UK mainly, since I was 16. I’m really excited to be at Rovers.
finished in its history. Unfortunately the players at the club were more ambitious than the club itself. We felt the club should have kicked on and signed some high profile players. They decided not to and my last season there ended badly and the club was relegated in 2011.This led to most of the squad being let go.
From there you to Fylkir FC How have you settled moved from Reykjavik in to life at Rovers? in Iceland, how did that move come about? It’s been great, I’m really enjoying it and delighted to be here, they’re a good bunch of lads. Everyone from the gaffer to the staff has made me welcome. It’s a great club with the best players around. Early results have been good. Beating Coleraine away and then beating Linfield 7-2 on aggregate were very encouraging results.I’m very optimistic and looking forward to the season ahead.
You’ve spent the vast bulk of your career at Hamilton Academicals in Scotland, how did you enjoy your time there? It was great. When I signed initially in 2006 they were in the 1st Division. We won promotion in my second season and then spent three years in the SPL. In our first season back we finished 9th, then the following season we finished 7th, which was the highest the club had ever
Through my agent, it was actually this time last year as they have summer football over there.I didn’t have a club at the time so I was glad to get over there, delighted to sign. The people were great. Even though it was a step down I was pleasantly surprised with the standard in Iceland, most of the teams like to knock the ball around. In Iceland the two biggest clubs are FH and KR and they have more money than everyone else so they tend to dominate with everyone else scrapping for European places. There was no real language problem as most Icelandic people are fluent in English anyway. Every experience in life is important.
Where is your favourite position to play? I’m a natural centre back but I’ve no preference, I play anywhere along the back.
InTallaght_Edition32Master_Layout 1 20/03/2013 16:22 Page 57
Did you follow any League of Ireland team when you were growing up? No one team in particular. I’m good mates with Gav Whelan, whose Dad Paul played for a few different League Of Ireland clubs, so I used to follow whoever he was playing for.Because I was living away from Ireland for the last 10 years I wouldn’t have kept up to date that much with the league apart from the clubs my mates were playing for. James Chambers is a mate of mine so I would have followed how he was getting on.
You are also a former teammate of Ireland international James McCarthy? Yes I played with James at Hamilton. What a player. He used to come train with us when he was 15, by the time he was 16 he was running the training! I think it’s only a matter of time before he moves on from Wigan to a bigger club, it’s another step he has to make. He’s going to be an amazing player. I think he should be starting for Ireland because he’s one of the few midfielders we have who’s actually playing regular Premier League football.
What are your thoughts on the current Ireland team? I think we’ve got a lot of good players that unfortunately don’t suit Trappatoni. I don’t think Wes Hoolahan and Darren Gibson have been given a fair crack of the whip. We do have some very good young players; hopefully they’ll get their chance to show what they can do.
Finally David if you could change one thing about the League Of Ireland what would it be? Well since I’ve only just arrived it’s a bit of a tough question! I would hope that no more clubs go bust and that the teams in trouble financially can consolidate and that the league can grow.

Tell us about your role as Youth Development Officer, what does that entail? Mal Slattery fills two very important roles at Rovers. As well as being the kit man he is also the club’s Youth Development Officer and the holder of a UEFA A Coaching Badge He has many years experience in the game having previously been at Shelbourne for 15 years where, as well as being kit man, he coached schoolboy, youth and senior teams. Now into his second season at Rovers InTallaght Magazine caught up with him on the day of the first league game of the season away to Dundalk.
I’m responsible for looking after the youths and schoolboy structure in the club. We’re going back to basics and we’re putting a lot of work into the SRFC Academy, which caters for five to seven year olds. It’s a long-term job but I am absolutely loving it.We started off with 32 kids, and this has grown quite a lot.Recently we had 120 children out at the Postal Union.
Are you a Rovers supporter?
Yes I’m a longtime supporter of the club, bigtime!
You were also kit man for the Irish senior team from 2006 to 2008?
Yes I was,I had been working with the U23s before and that’s how I ended up with the seniors,it was a great experience, I enjoyed it so much.
Can you tell us any How did you end up funny stories that being poached from happened while Shels to Rovers? in this role? Paddy McQuiad, who worked with me at Umbro, was looking to restructure the schoolboy section. He was well familiar with my background in football.I had spent fifteen years coaching teams at Shelbourne. Before Shels I’d coached teams at Hartstown FC.Paddy asked me if I would be interested in taking on the role of Youth Development Officer at Rovers. After chatting with him I had a meeting with Noel Byrne and Jonathan Roche and I was offered the role. After 15 years at Shels I think it was time to move on!
Do you have any ambitions to be a first team manger some day?
No, I’ve no interest at all in full club management, I’m very happy doing what I’m doing.Different people have different ambitions and for me I much prefer the coaching end of things.
No I couldn’t reveal anything! What happens in the dressing room stays in the dressing room, you know yourself!
Well did any of them have any mad superstitions?
A lot of players will have their own ways of doing things; they’ll sit in a certain place, lucky underpants stuff like that!
Who is the best player you’ve worked with in the league of Ireland?
Joseph Ndo,a brilliant lad and an absolutely brilliant player. He was great for working with the kids as well at Shels, he
brings his own unique style to it.I reckon Joe will be a brilliant coach or manager in the future.
Who is the best player you’ve worked with at International level?
That’s a hard one as there have been so many good ones.If I had to pick two it would be Stephen Ireland and Robbie Keane.Technically Stephen Ireland was brilliant,in that first game at Croke Park v Wales he was so good, best player on the pitch and he scored a brilliant goal as well.
Do you think we’ll ever see him in an Ireland jersey again?
I don’t know.I think he’s still a good player;he’s been unlucky with injuries and managers. Some players just need an arm around them. I also think though that we have some very good young players coming through for Ireland anyway. Young lads like Robbie Brady and Jeff Hendrick,so it might be hard for him to get back in if he did come back.
Are you fairly optimistic about the future of the Irish national team?
Yes I am, I think we’re going to bring through some really good players in the future. We’re starting to see the benefits of all the hard work that’s being done at youth level. As well as this recent results at underage level have been very encouraging, winning away to Italy and the recent 3-0 home win over Holland U21s were amazing results and give us great hope for the future.
Any predictions for the two World Cup Qualifiers v Sweden and Austria at the end of the month?
A draw away to Sweden and a win at home to Austria. We have to be realistic, Sweden away is going to be a tough game but I think we can get something out there.
What have been your most memorable matches?
InTallaght_Edition32Master_Layout 1 20/03/2013 16:23 Page 59
The first Ireland game at Croke Park v Wales in 2007 was an unbelievable experience. The atmosphere was incredible.Even walking around before hand with the players was great. And we got the result. Also the last game at the old LansdownevSanMarinowouldbeanothermemorablegame for me,the atmosphere that night was incredible as well.
Are the Rovers lads very demanding, any prima donna type kit requests?
No not all, they’re all great lads.I really enjoy working with them. I would have known a lot of them from before anyway,James Chambers and Billy Dennehy played under me a few years ago.
Your favourite ground?
Tallaght Stadium,it’s the best stadium in the league.
Describe your routine on match day as kit manager?
The day before the game I’ll call into the club and pick up the kit after work. Then I’ll get everything packed and ready for the next day. On the day of the game I’ll pick up the physio on the way to the ground. For any of the games in Dublin I’ll spin up the road in my own car and for any of the away games outside Dublin I’ll go on the bus with the team.
Have you seen many changes in kit and equipment since you started as a kit man?
Ah yeah there would be definitely be more equipment involved nowadays. There’s always new products as well that the players will try out.
Finally Mal, apart from Rovers, who else do you think will be challenging for the title this season?
Cork are going to be strong. Sligo also. I have to say Pats as well because the Pat’s kit man is standing here right beside me! It’s going to be a very strong league this year and we want to hit the ground running. I think it’s going to be the most competitive league for years.
