We hope we find you all in great form and that you all enjoy this, our 7th edition of 2013.Here in the office we thought it would be more appropriate to rename this issue our “Girl Power” edition! Kelly is a former columnist with InTallaght Magazine and it was great to catch up with her. The secondary interview is with Gabrielle McDonald, a 19 year old drag racer from Greenhills who has already won a British Championship and is planning on breaking the Irish land speed record. Gabby is a very determined sportswoman who has battled a lot of obstacles to be a big success in her chosen sport and we are delighted to get the chance to tell her story. This edition’s Square Magazine includes news on the first Oopsadaisy’s Toddler Group event, which was a big success, and the Polka Dot Party, which also went down well with the local children.

Kilnamanagh Family Recreation Centre Spring Gig
Dave Mason Who Collected Rubbish From Hard To Reach Areas Along The Dodder In His Canoe
Dodder Action Off To A Great Start Despite the original event (which we told you about in an earlier issue) being postponed by two weeks,a couple of hundred people of all shapes, ages and sizes got out on Saturday April 6 and cleaned the Dodder banks from Old Bawn,Tallaght, to Ballsbridge. Old Bawn had been added late in the day so it didn't attract as big crowd as some of the other locations. But they seem to have got the cleaning bug. On Saturday April 13, another local Jim Lalor got the troops out again to get a really good job done on those potentially beautiful Dodder banks starting at Old Bawn Bridge at 10 am. Firhouse Weir attracted a huge crowd, led by a troupe of fit Canadian women, who are gagging to get that Dodder Valley Park fit for purpose again. It's the dirtiest part of the whole river and that's a shame because it should be the most beautiful. But the Firhouse locals aren't going to sit idly by. There's a genuine hunger in Firhouse to turn their local river back into the amenity it should be. Further down the river there were huge turnouts at Rathfarnham and Milltown and Donnybrook and a tiny turnout in Ballsbridge (but they really got stuck in all the same!) Five hundred bags of junk were collected from the river and then disposed of by the three councils along with a load of scrap metal. A few enterprising guys had some of that away in a Hiace before the organisers knew what was happening! Tara De Buitléar, from Tallaght took part in the effort and posted on the Facebook page that:“I enjoyed the few hours last week - it’s a free work out!” The Dodder Action Team also had this to say on their Facebook wall after the initial event:“Thank you all so much for your efforts. The IUSRU and Civil Defence not only provided us with life-saving and first aid cover for the day but also rolled up sleeves and joined in.
“Donnybrook Scouts and helpers got a huge amount done and welcomed all who made it to their hall with tea and sandwiches. The Dodder needs ongoing attention, but when large numbers take it on, it is amazing what can be achieved. Thanks again everyone!” Dodder Action is just a voluntary group but they have the bit between their teeth now. They're aiming to get a network of branches working along the river to help the Councils get the river shining clean and point out things they think they could do better. There have been a few enquiries about setting up community employment schemes too.The group are aiming to end up making a voluntary partnership with the Councils to protect the river and make it the precious amenity to all, as it should be. Check out Dodder Action on Facebook for details of the next clean, a barbecue and a walk to the Dodder headwaters. Or phone them on 086 174 4938.

Parnell Square Cultural Quarter a new Cultural District for Dublin City Plans for the redevelopment of Dublin’s Parnell Square and the provision of a cultural quarter, including a new city library and cultural centre, were unveiled at the start of the month. The proposed development has been termed possibly “The most important cultural development in Dublin for 100 years,” by City Architect Ali Grehan Consultation on the €60 million scheme is now invited by Dublin City Council the Office of Public Works and Kennedy Wilson, a US real estate investment company, which has its main European office in Dublin. Key to the plans are the relocation of the city library to a new development incorporated into Colaiste Mhuire and the upgrading of other notable Georgian buildings on the north side of the square to make what its advocates call an “intercultural district”. Included in the plans are a civic plaza and a largely pedestrianised section of Parnell Square linking the library and existing Hugh Lane gallery and Writers’ Museum more closely with the Garden of Remembrance. The plans were unveiled two weeks ago by Lord Mayor Naoise Ó Muirí along with City manager John Tierney and City Librarian Margaret Hayes.Joining them was Peter Collins from Kennedy Wilson, which is providing the € 2.5 million seed capital on a philanthropic basis. The existing city library at the nearby Ilac centre, opened in 1986, is deemed to be well beyond its capacity and is not of a stature to match the needs of Dublin or its role as a Unesco City of Literature. The new library, a striking circular design, will act as a focal point for greater civic involvement in literature and the arts generally. It will incorporate an innovation and enterprise hub, a story house, music centre and a digital library. The new-look Parnell Square will consolidate what planners term the city’s Civic Spine which will run eventually from

Dublin Institute of Technology at Grangegorman on the north side, through the square and along O’Connell Street towards College Green, Christchurch and, eventually, to the Irish Museum of Modern Art at Kilmainham. It is hoped that greater reaches of central Dublin will be regenerated by investment in this Civic Spine and that further improvements will be kick-started along its course. The company Kennedy Wilson is providing the € 2.5 million seed capital on a philanthropic basis. Mr. Collins confirmed Kennedy Wilson’s optimism for Ireland’s economic future.“We are firmly of the belief that the Irish economy will recover over the medium term and we believe that Dublin, as the capital city, will be the driver and the beneficiary of that recovery. To that end we have invested over €200 million in commercial and residential projects.” He pointed to an historical parallel in that the Rotunda Hospital, also on Parnell Square, was initially funded by private donations while the Hugh Lane Gallery owed much to the private generosity of Sir Hugh Lane. As city librarian, Ms Hayes said the new library would be predicated on the notion that it would act as a“cultural broker where other entities come in” such as theatres, innovation centres and other facilities.“This will be an investment in the people,” she said. Consultation is now open and the scheme’s design team hopes the redeveloped square will be opened by Christmas 2017.

Are We There Yet? In 2011, the Kavanagh sisters published Click Click, the true story of their child sex abuse, and their journey to ensure this experience didn't define them. Since then, the women have been interviewed many times (including a news feature in this very magazine) and spoken at seminars and conferences about their insights and learning. The women's warmth, honesty and humour have enabled audiences to engage in their story at a deep
level, offering a level of understanding which many professionals have described as being more valuable ' than all the training or books they’ve read before'. Are We There Yet will be an intimate audience with the Kavanagh sisters, an experiential evening with the women sharing their story of healing and growth, including dialogue with the audience. This event is for anyone interested in healing, forgiveness and the power of the human spirit. It will be explicit and honest but will also be underpinned by the women's wisdom and wit and wonderful way with words. For more details see www.healingthroughhopeandhumour.com
Local girl organising concert to highlight suicide awareness and the problem of bullying Melissa Luttrell, who is a Leaving Cert student at Mount Seskin College came up with the idea after learning of the tragic suicides of the two Gallagher sisters in Donegal, one of which is believed to have been linked to bullying.
Ray Scully From The Voice Of Ireland Will Be Performing
Melissa, who has experienced the devastating effects of bullying herself, decided she wanted to do something to highlight the fact that there are children all over Ireland suffering like she did, whether through school, social network even on the roads they live on by groups or individuals. Thanks to the help of close friends, including another Tallaght girl Catelyn Conlon, Melissa got through her bullying ordeal. It was then that she started putting the word around about her plans to create an event to highlight the problem other teens are going through. Other friends came forward and wanted to help as they had been through similar experiences. Mellisa’s father Mark Luttrell spoke with InTallaght Magazine about the inspiration behind the concert: “Melissa and Catlyn hope that this concert will make more people aware that people are committing suicide through bullying and to let those who are being bullied know that there is somewhere you can call and people you can talk to. “Also to let you know you are not alone, and don't be afraid to speak up against bullying. They have picked to support Aware and Teenline as they feel they play a vital roll in helping teenagers and others who feel they have no-one to turn to.” Mark said the girls are delighted with the great support they have received from the community so far. “The Management at the Jobstown Community Centre came on board offering the centre for the concert and soon

after artists from around the area wanted to get involved and give their time to back Melissa and her friends. “Local shops in the area and The Square have got involved by giving spot prizes for a raffle for which Melissa and Catelyn would like to thank everyone for their generosity. “Acts appearing on the night include Ray Scully from The Voice of Ireland, Kenneth Usher from Britain's Got Talent, Robby Dingle, Luke Clerkin plus a host of others. “If there are any local bands who would like to come and join Melissa they can contact me on 087 362 4983. “Tickets are available from Jobstown Community Centre and also from Melissa at Mount Seskin Collage and Catlyn at St Thomas' senior school.” The Suicide Awareness Concert will take place on Saturday May 11 at Jobstown Community Centre from 7.00pm until 10.00pm.

Local lives improved by organ donation
for our beautiful Laoise, who would not exist but for the altruism of my donor's family. I feel that the beauty and vibrancy of our little Laoise as well as the potential of her new life embodies the wonderful gift of organ donation.”
The beginning of this month was Organ Donor Awareness Week, the annual event that draws attention to the importance of organ donation in this country.
James Reynolds from Springfield received a kidney transplant in 2009. He is well known through his work with the IKA and his sporting prowess. A veteran of the European and World Transplant Games, he is looking forward to once again representing Ireland at the 19th World Transplant Games in South Africa this summer.
Organ Donor Awareness Week also serves as a fundraising exercise for the Irish Kidney Association. Irish donation figures have varied a lot from year to year. 2010 was almost a record low for organ donation, 2011 was a record high and 2012, at 17% less than the previous year, was below average. The Irish Kidney Association Chief Executive, Mr. Mark Murphy said, “I don’t know of another European country, even of a similar size population, with such wide swings in deceased donor activity. “Unless the required infrastructure and funding is implemented in the Republic, the Organ Donor Consent issue is irrelevant at this time as there is much more to do here before such deliberations take place.” Almost 3,000 people in Ireland are enjoying extended life away from hospital as a result of receiving organ transplants. There are currently over 600 people in Ireland waiting for life-saving organ transplants including heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas. 75% of the Irish Kidney Association’s funding is from non-statutory fundraising and donations. To find out more InTallaght Magazine spoke with three local people who received the gift of life thanks to organ donation. Julie Cummins from Firhouse received a kidney transplant in November 2008:“Thanks to the overwhelming kindness of my donor's family my dream of becoming a mum came true six months ago. “We had a little girl called Laoise. Her name means 'radiant girl' and she is certainly the sunshine of our lives,” Julie said. Julie’s life had changed in April 2007 when she became seriously ill as her kidney function declined. When it fell to 12% she was put on dialysis, a frightening and limiting experience that saw her attached to a machine eight hours a day. “When I finally received the call to tell me a donor had been found I was struck by both a profound sadness for the tragic loss of someone whom I would never know but who in a special way would always be with me, and a sense of awe that a family would be kind enough to think of someone they didn't even know at the most traumatic moment of their lives. “The IKA do fantastic work in supporting patients and in raising awareness but even if you carry an organ donor card your family have the final say. It is important that you discuss organ donation with the people closest to you so that, if the time ever comes, their decision will be easier to make,as they know that they are honouring your wishes,” Julie explained. “Since the day of the transplant I have been in excellent health. I continue to take medication to prevent rejection but I have not had any negative side effects. And after nine months of careful monitoring our precious little Laoise came into our lives. “I have made a commitment to my donor's family to always think of their loved one at the happiest moments of my life.I am so grateful
"We had the discussion on many occasions and Sandra had said 'Make sure my organs are donated', so we knew it was the right thing to do," he added. Colin underwent his second kidney transplant last summer after his brother Paul was found to be a match and he is back to full health seven months on. Organ Donor Cards can be obtained by phoning the Irish Kidney Association on LoCall 1890 543 639 or Freetext the word DONOR to 50050. For more information visit www.ika.ie
“I had been sick since I was a baby, from the age of 5 weeks right up to when I went on dialysis at 18. Two years into dialysis they took both my kidneys out which meant I was on a very strict fluid restriction,I couldn’t take more than 250 ml of liquids a day, less than a can of Coke! I was always very positive about dialysis, I just got on with it,” said James. “My family and friends were amazing. My friends used to prank me by ringing me up and pretending to be from Beaumont Hospital telling me they had a kidney for me. “Then when Beaumont did actually ring me up I hung up on them thinking it was my friends! They rang me at 1 o clock and I was in there by 2!” James says that the changes in his quality of life are there for all to see:“When I got the transplant I was literally a brand new man, I can’t explain it. Before I got my transplant I wasn’t very active but since then I’ve become the total opposite, it really is the gift of life.
Julie Cummins And Her Husband Caomhán Proudly Hold Their Baby Daughter Laoise
“I now work with the Irish kidney Association and I would urge everyone to carry a donor card. I think about my donor everyday, I’ll never forget the gift they gave me.I’m forever grateful to them and their family.” Firhouse resident Colin Clare hopes more people become organ donors by highlighting his own family's remarkable story of organ donation. Colin, who has undergone two kidney transplants, lost his sister Sandra to a brain haemorrhage in July 2011.Mother-of-three Sandra (46) suffered an aneurism while at a football match with her children and died three days later. Sandra's husband made the decision to donate her organs while she was on life support, in order to save further lives. In a tragic twist, Colin, who had his first kidney transplant 22 years ago, was preparing to begin dialysis after his kidney failed when Sandra died.
James Reynolds Showing Off His Medal In The Cockpit On The Way Home From The European Transplant & Dialysis Games Last Summer
Sadly, Sandra was not a match for Colin, but the Tallaght native received a life-saving kidney from his brother Paul a year later, in August 2012, and is now healthy and thriving once more. "It was a devastating experience that something like that could happen so suddenly to a young woman, and it was a huge decision for her husband to make," Colin said. "We were there with him and we fully supported the decision. Considering the effect that organ donation has had on our family, it was a no-brainer that this was the right thing to do. "After less than 24 hours, we knew that Sandra wasn't going to recover, so we had a very important decision to make," explained Colin. "We were told that there was no hope and asked if we would consider organ donation.

12 Reinventing Kelly By Rachel Lynch
So I started the programme to give me something different to do. I needed to challenge myself again.
From the updates on Twitter it’s been amazing to see your transformation. How long has it taken? When I did the diet plan I did it for six weeks and I lost a dress size in that time.
We met up with Kelly Donegan star of reality show Tallafornia. We got an insight into the Irish model’s new fitness programme which has seen the Tallaght girl drop a dress size in less than six weeks, oh and not forgetting the fact she has also gained a pretty impressive six pack too!
Is it tough coming out of the show and starting up something new? Everyone thinks because you have been on the TV things are just handed to you, but it’s not that easy.Things are actually a million times harder. It’s so much easier going to work nine to five and getting a weekly wage. When you are in the media you have to go and chase down work. You have to make sure you look the part and are going to events and more importantly you are chasing down payments for jobs which I have found is the hardest. People think it’s easy, but it’s Ireland it’s not England. In England you might get a 150 grand just to do a story if you are in the spotlight but here in Ireland it’s a pittance. So you have to work ten times harder plus you get ridiculed and you consistently have people on your case.
How have the public been since you have
What do you work on most when in the gym? Each day in the gym I would work on a different body part. Like one day I would have legs, the next I would have triceps and biceps, then chest and shoulders which most women won’t do and then I’d do back and abs.
left the show and started on this new fitness challenge?
How many times a week would you be in the gym?
I find people can be very tough, and like I have said, constantly on your case. It just depends on who you meet.
I was there Monday and Tuesday, off Wednesday, there Thursday and Friday, then off the weekend. The funny thing is people always think to get the six pack and muscle tone that I was killing myself in the gym, but I wasn’t! I only did 40 minutes for four days a week. It was just good technique, the right training,I worked with all weights I didn’t do any cardio
So Kelly, from what I can see you have done an amazing job on getting this fantastic body shape, what prompted you to take action? It was around Christmas time I got a bit negative which is really unusual for me, I never get down in the dumps I’m always happy.
Do you think anyone could pull this off or do you need to be extremely dedicated? All I can say is it’s not for the fainthearted and it is tough.

15 Exercise as you have explained has a huge part to play, but obviously there is a certain type of diet needed too. What is your typical day-to-day diet?
Are there any foods you now avoid?
Usually my rule and my advice I would give to other people is Monday to Friday eat really healthy then at the weekend treat yourself. It’s called a treat for a reason because if you don’t you won’t be able to keep going.
My saviour is sweet potato. It’s my healthy carb but even at that I would only have one portion of it a day. I love it with olive oil and rosemary in the oven.
During the diet plan I cut out certain foods but you just have to be creative.I’d have salmon, chicken, turkey, eggs and steak.
Are you now happy with your body?
Who devised the diet plan for you?
Yeah I’m more happy with my willpower to be honest. I knew I could do it, I just wanted to take myself from average girl to super toned super healthy, but it wasn’t even just about the body. I feel so good, I now have so much energy. I’m so happy, so content and I was getting up every morning at six o’clock full of energy. I got more work done then I ever did in those six weeks and my life still revolved around exercising and eating and I still got more done. So for people making excuses that they “don’t have the time to train I work hard”, you can find 40 minutes four days a week.
Well I kind of said it to Dave (Kellys boyfriend). We have been together two years and I have never asked him to do a program like this. I mean we train together, we do a lot of exercise together which I enjoy but I never actually sat down and said “do me a proper fitness programme.”I wanted a bodybuilder’s diet for women, and that’s what he did.
Do you still treat yourself to the odd chocolate bar or takeaway from time to time or have you cut all that out? The thing is when you eat really healthy you then appreciate other foods. I remember after the six weeks I had a cheesecake and I was like,”I actually don’t need anything else in life, I don’t need any satisfaction, this cheese cake is all that matters.”
Stuff I would suggest to stay clear of would be milk. Milk is not good for you. It’s a toxin which people don’t know. When you think about it ,why is it that a baby cow stops drinking milk after like six months and will eat grass for the rest of its life?
Any healthy foods you swear by?
Do you feel this new fitness kick has now changed you as a person? No. I think it has just verified who I am as a person. I have always been a strongwilled hardworking person and I love a challenge so I knew I could do it. Even when Dave (Kelly’s boyfriend) gave me the program, he told me it was going to be tough. I knew it wasn’t the average diet. This is a proper body building diet.
Have many of your family or friends got on board after seeing the results? No because what I did was an extreme version.I wouldn’t tell anyone to just go and do it because it’s not easy and you have to maintain it.
What I said was that I would do six weeks and then I would maintain what I had achieved, go back to how I was but just eat healthy Monday to Friday, and as I’ve said have the treat at the weekend.
What female celebrity at the moment in your opinion ticks all the boxes in regard to the best body? I don’t know I havent really thought much of that but I know this sounds crazy but since I’ve done this, the proper training and the eating,I’ve started to appriciate bodybuilding, like the actual bodies. Beforehand I would have been like “Ohh jesus she has too many muscles! That’s disgusting, but now after doing it and seeing how hard it is and the dedication someone has to put in to actually make their body look like that I appricate that a lot more than let’s say someone who is just naturally slim. Even the Victoria’s Secret models, they have amazing bodies but I mean they must work their asses off to achieve those figures. I’m sure it’s good genes as well but they didn’t wake up like that.
Your body is still very feminine, did you fear at any time during the programme that the toned muscle would look too much for example the Jodie Marsh look? To be honest everyone is so anti Jodie Marsh,if anything I’m pro Jodie Marsh.Jodie Marsh said she was depressed, she had no drive in life and that doing bodybuilding gave her a new sense of direction in her life.Women get too sucked in they worry about losing their boobs and fear about gaining too much muscle. Women can get smaller and toned and we can lose fat but we physically cannot get bigger, we don’t have testosterone to build muscle. So I think some women have in their heads they don’t want to lift weights because they don’t want to get bulky.
InTallaght34Master_Layout 1 17/04/2013 17:49 Page 16
16 Has the work you have put into your body now given you more confidence? Yeah 100%. I always found that a lot of girls didn’t really like writing to me since the show (Tallafornia), I don’t know why, but since doing the diet plan it’s kind of opened up a new kind of spectrum of fans. It has made me more relatable. So I now get something like 100 emails a week from women. Some woman asked me to train her for her wedding. She said she would pay me whatever I would charge her, but I’m not a professional. I get a complete mix of emails from young girls to older ladies asking for advice so I think that’s the nicest thing that I got from the whole process.
What are your plans for the future? I’m getting so many offers to do so many different things at the minute,I have just done Life Magazine which was probably one of the biggest things I have done. It has given me a new image but to be honest I’m the same person as I’ve always been but people are starting to see the real me through this, that I’m a motivated person and that I’m not just the girl from the TV that’s a model. Its nice also to motivate people to get fit if anything.

MEET GABBY - A FORMER TRIPLE BRITISH
DRAG RACING CHAMPION FROM GREENHILLS

19 GABBY PREPARING FOR A RUN AT SANTA POD RACEWAY IN THE UK
2010 was obviously a very memorable year for you then? Yes it was. I started that year off well with an event win, which earned me maximum points in the Championship. I had won the Triple and the Santa Pod B National. I was also now leading the Nordic Championship, which is also the European Junior Championship. Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark hold two rounds of their championships at Santa Pod in the UK each year and I had just won their first round. I led the Nordic Championship for most of the year but eventually finished sixth as we couldn’t get the sponsorship needed to travel to any of their other rounds, which were mostly in Sweden. We went to Motor Sport Ireland but they weren't interested and we just couldn't get sponsorship. It’s all cliques in there. It’s ridiculous. I got no recognition off them at all.
Gabrielle McDonald is a 19-year-old drag racer from Greenhills. In 2010 she was the triple British Junior Drag racing Champion having won all championships available to her. She is currently finishing her licensing runs for Top Fuel Drag racing and will soon be driving close to the Irish land speed record of 301mph. InTallaght Magazine met up with one of Ireland’s latest up and coming sportswomen to discuss her career so far.
Tell us how you got into drag racing? When I was 12 I was in America on holidays with my parents, we were travelling from LA to Vegas so we called into a speedway amusement park called Speed Zone on the way. I saw four junior dragsters on a rail and because my Dad was big into cars I just said to him “Wanna race?” I had never done it before and had no interest in cars. The guy in charge explained how it worked and how you have to go on the third amber. On my first go I went too soon. On my second go I got a reaction time of 0.001! The guy looking after us said that was a remarkable time, that he thought I was a junior drag racer! After that I had another 17 goes in a row and got great times and he told me I was a natural. I was like “OK, cool!”
We went and bought my first junior dragster off Geoff Hauser of Hauser Race Cars.He had brought it over from the US the previous year. This was January 2007.My first competitive meeting was the Summer Nationalsin 2007 but I didn’t get the chance to race as my clutch bolt came loose before the only qualifying session of the meet. In June 2007 I’m off at 17.5 secs over an eighth of a mile in the Junior Modified competition in what is known as a School Car. From that I went straight to Junior Modified Advanced and my time went to 7.9 seconds and speed up to 84 mph. I loved it straight away! In 2008 I was offered a place to race in Bristol,Tennessee at Thunder Valley. I also received a dragster made especially for me.This all gave me great experience and tips for racing back in England.
Then the following year, when I was 13, my Dad got me a test race in Santa Pod Raceway in Northamptonshire -- the home of European drag racing in the UK. I tested a junior dragster on a real drag strip. After a long battle of six months with Motor Sport Ireland I got my licence to race.
So by this stage you were competing mainly in the UK?
So what happened after you got your licence to race?
Yes I was competing in the British Junior Dragster Championship; I was the only Irish junior drag racer taking part in it. In 2010 and I ended up becoming the triple British Junior Drag Racing Champion having won all the championships available.
Did you try any other organisations in this country? Yes, I also applied to both the Minister for Sport and the Minister For Transport Leo Varadakar last year and they looked into it and they told us I wasn’t entitled to any funding, as drag racing is not a recognised sport in this country and there’s no track here. We explained that I was the British Champion and had a chance of being European Championbut they weren’t interested. If they saw how good I was at drag racing they’d know I’m going to do the country proud. I’m not being arrogant or big headed when I say this but I can guarantee I’ll be at the top of the ranks, the results back it up.I was the first girl to win all three championships. It costs around €100,000 a year to compete though. I don’t expect the government to pay it all but 10/15k would go a long way.The thing was we weren’t even looking for much money; even some kind of mentoring would have been appreciated.
What do you say to those people who say drag racing is not a sport? I’d say it’s just as much a sport any of the other motor sports. There is one track in Tullow in Carlow where people go to race. It’s a huge sport in the UK. They get crowds of up to 10,000 at Santa Pod, 15,000 at the VW Event. The sport gets a lot of recognition over there, they also get funding from their government. If it means I’ll have to move to England then so be it. I’d rather represent Ireland but if I have to move I have to move. When I first started racing over there they thought I was a joke. When I took out the Championship leader they thought “She can actually race.” They now fly the Irish flag at the start of the track in Santa Pod, they’ve taken me in as one of their own, I was very surprised! Over here there isn’t enough government support for all sports.Look at Katie Taylor. Before she won the gold in London she received very little funding, she had to train in not great facilities then when she won they were all over her. Unless you do something amazing you’ll never get their support.

Have you always been interested in cars? No not all! When I was a little I’d been a child model and done acting, I’d had no interest in cars. Now I love them. My Dad is a mechanic and he really wants to get into drag racing himself. My Mom played Gaelic football for Dublin. Now the friends I’ve had since I was very young can’t believe how much I’ve changed, they think it’s mad – they all remember me from stage school now I’m all like “Oh that’s a nice V8 engine you have there!”
What are your plans for the next five years?
Yes very dangerous! If you check out 2012 World ChampionAntron Brown’s crash on YouTube you’ll get an idea of how dangerous it can be! Thankfully he got out and was completely fine.I had a crash myself where I had burned my tires and shouldn’t have gone the third time.I went sideways but got back straight. It’s also quite safe as well because we have fireproof gloves and gear and a roll cage. I love drag racing so much I wouldn’t have it any other way! When you are doing something that is your passion you don’t think about the dangers.
You were saying drag racing is quite male dominated do you get treated differently by the male drivers?
Hopefully I’ll race in England for the next three years then I’d like to compete in the NHRA in the US. The money in America is much better.Top fuel drag racing is a very big sport there with some races having prize money of half a million dollars.Eventually I want to race in the proper competitions. This year I still need to fulfill my licence and I’m hoping to get sponsorship. If I do get sponsorship then next year I’m hoping to go all over Europe.
Only by a few.You get told things like “Girls can’t drive!” I got that quite a lot at the start! Even Geoff Hauser’s son Scott said when I was starting out that I wasn’t going to do well! I think girls are more accepted now and a lot of them are doing well.Anita Mäkelä, who came third in the championship last year,is supporting herself and racing all over Europe. She’s so humble and nice. Shelley Pearson is another great driver. In America in the junior dragsters section 80/90% of them are girls.
How do you train for your sport?
Finally Gabby outside of drag racing what other interests do you have?
I can only train in the car in the UK. My Dad built me a simulator to use here, which helps a lot, and I’ve also downloaded apps which help you work on your reaction time.
Is drag racing dangerous?
I used to play hockey in school but I don’t play anymore. I’ve been playing the piano for 13 years and if I’m relaxing I like to either listen to music or get out my keyboard and play.I also love reading; I’m a total bookworm! I love romantic novels. I’ll even pull out a book at the racetrack.I’m also studying psychology in NCI.It’s going really well. I’ve always wanted to help people, I’m an emphatic person and I would love to be a counselor with my own practice. A lot of people do drag racing as a hobby but I would like to definitely make a career out of it.

30 Cinema Star Trek Into Darkness By Edward Lam
InTallaght’s Report From The Advanced Special Screening Of Star Trek Into Darkness Star Trek Into Darkness doesn’t officially open until May 9, however Paramount invited us to a special IMAX screening of this summers most anticipated sequel. The first 28 minutes of the film, along with two additional clips from further on in the movie, were introduced by director JJ Abrams. He explained that the screening would be shown in 2D, as opposed to the 3D we were expecting, and also that some of the special effects weren’t exactly up to scratch,as he was still in the studio completing the movie. Before concluding his introduction to the footage he added that previously not being a fan of 3D his mind was changed due to the recent advancements of 3D technology and that the movie would push the envelope of what was possible in 3D. Star Trek Into Darkness’ 3D was added during postproduction which is never really great in my opinion, but recent examples have improved greatly – to the point where it can be difficult to tell the difference between shot-in-3D and post-production-3D. It seems that director J.J. Abrams had 3D cinematography in mind while shooting the film, as some elements of the action on screen were clearly shot with the format in mind. Some of the use is subtle, and some seems like it would pretty “in your face”.Having only got to see the footage in 2D we can’t say whether the 3D is good or bad. Your mind is probably already made up as to which format you’ll go and see this film in so there’s not much point going into it other than saying that it looked like it would be pretty stunning in 3D. As to the impact of the IMAX preview...did it knock the crowd in attendance off our seats? I would say yes.It left us all wanting more which is obviously a good sign! The movie looks more action packed and full of amazingly shot scenes and special effects and I have to say I was very impressed. Based on the action-packed press screening,J.J.Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness is going to boldly go where no Star Trek film has gone before...in terms of all out spectacle, anyway. But will the movie deliver a story that both regular audiences and hardcore Trekkies can get behind? Acording to Paramount it will.Again only having seen clips from the movie we can’t advise you on this but based on the footage we saw and the last
installment I think not only will long-standing Star Trek fans be able to appreciate the movie, but audiences who know nothing about the Star Trek franchise will too. The preview leaves no doubt that we can expect an edge-of-the-seat spectacular. It begins with the Starfleet crew struggling to save a planet from a volcanic eruption, but also touches on Mr Spock’s conscience about rules that are broken during the mission, and an atrocity on the Enterprise designed to lure its hierarchy into a trap. From the 28-minute teaser, the storyline proved impressive, together with heart-pumping music, multi-levelled sound, and engaging computer graphics, whilst famous faces like Benedict Cumberbatch,Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto bring a depth of quality to the cast.If you’ve never been a Trekkie, Into Darkness will be out to convert you.

32 Iron Man 3 (3D) By Rachel Lynch
Iron Man 3 (3D) lands in Irish cinemas this month If you are not familiar with the franchise the upcoming American superhero film features the Marvel Comics character Iron Man,and was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It will be the sequel to Iron Manand Iron Man 2, and the seventh installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, being the first major release in the franchise since the crossover film The Avengers. Set after the events that occurred in The Avengers,Tony Stark faces a powerful enemy, the Mandarin. Left to rely soley on his instincts, he must embark on a harrowing quest to find those responsible for destroying his personal life. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle.
With his back against the wall, Stark’s survival is down to his own devices, relying on his ingenuity to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him:“Does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?” The main character of the movie is Stark played by Robert Downey Jr, a self described genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist who escaped captivity with a suit of armor he created and now struggles to keep his technology in the right hands. Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Stark’s girlfriend and right hand woman. We are also introduced to newbies like Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce, who play the bad guys. We still don’t know exactly what Kingsley’s The Mandarin and Pearce’s Aldrich Killian are really up to (or how a respected scientist met up with a powerful terrorist leader), but that’s the mystery, and hopefully there will still be a surprise or two in store for us!

There is no doubting that director Joseph Kosinski has pulled out all the stops with this cast as the legendary Morgan Freeman also stars. In 2073,a 37 year old former Marine commander named Jack Harper played by Tom Cruise is one of the last few drone mechanics stationed on Earth, which was nearly destroyed by an alien invasion 60 years earlier. As part of a massive operation to extract the planet's remaining vital resources, he lives in an airborne "town" floating thousands of meters above the Earth. With his mission nearly complete, Jack's soaring existence comes crashing down when he rescues a 22 year old female stranger played by Olga Kurylenko from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a series of events that forces Jack to question everything he knows about the war and its aftermath. In addition, after being captured by an insurgency led by 102 year old Malcolm Beech played by Morgan Freeman, Jack is told that the society in which he lives may in fact be a police state. The movie is an action packed science fiction flick with some excellent mind blowing scenes, and many thought-provoking moments too. Make no mistake about it, this is a Tom Cruise movie, the star appearing onscreen for the majority and carrying proceedings single-handedly for long periods. He’s more than up to the task, the actor is never better than when he’s got the weight of the world and indeed the fate of humanity on his shoulders.

Olly Murs wows Irish crowd with two sell out shows Well Olly Murs has certainly come a long way from his days on the X Factor as a contestant. Having come second to Joe McElderry in 2009 the Essex lad has gone from strength to strength proving yet again that not winning the X Factor can do you more favours in the long run.
Niall Horan on-off romance? So it has been reported in the last few weeks that Irish One Direction star Niall Horan was no longer on the market, sending media sites like Facebook and Twitter into melt down. One Direction fans can relax though as the lady in question has denied the romance. Irish model Zoe Whelan has said she is not dating the blonde-haired pop star.
He was in Ireland again for two sell out shows and all it took was two songs on his first night to receive a flying bra. This is just the beginning for Olly and his touring this year as in the next few months he will be on the road with his new best friend,Robbie Williams.Dapper from head to toe,the cheeky Essex chap led his suited and booted backing band through some of his best known pop tracks.
Zoe took to Twitter before deleting her account after receiving a barrage of abuse from jealous 1D groupies. ‘No, me and Niall are not dating,’ Zoe tweeted. She also followed it up with a final tweet on the matter stating ‘Now I’ve settled the rumours you can all go back to your own lives. Please stop tweeting me rude things.’
Olly always seems to enjoy himself when over here and for someone who in his words is “just starting off” he is doing well to sell out two nights in a row in Dublin’s O2.
So girls if the pair are to be believed, Niall is still very much a free man along with fellow band member Harry Styles.
Farrell is back home Colin Farrell is shooting his latest movie in Co. Fermanagh. The Dubliner was spotted out shopping in Enniskillen over the past few weeks and has shocked members of the public with his laid back approach to hitting the stores and restaurants around the area. This is Farrell’s first movie to film here in five years, since Ondine, which he shot in Co.Cork.The Hollywood heart throb's latest Irish movie is an adaptation of Miss Julie. He will star opposite Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain in the film, directed by Liv Ullmann. The movie is set to be released in 2014.
So Tom Cruise is Irish? Another celebrity who touched down on the island recently is Tom Cruise. He was in town for the première of his new movie Oblivion. As part of his visit to Dublin, Cruise received a Certificate of Irish Heritage from Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore. Cruise's Irish ancestry stretches back over 800 years,he is a fifth generation direct descendant of Patrick Russell Cruise. Cruise and his Oblivion co-star Olga Kurylenko also visited the Guinness Storehouse where he seemed to enjoy a pint of ‘the black stuff’. The visit also included a pre-recorded interview with the Late Late Show, a private reception hosted by the Irish Film Board and then the première of the film Oblivion at the Savoy Cinema in O'Connell Street.
B*witched back for good? B*witched the Irish girl band of the late 90s have been off the radar for a number of years but thanks to ITVs Big Reunion show we have seen the Dublin girls thrown back into the limelight with the likes of Atomic Kitten, Liberty X, The Honeyz, 911, 5ive and Blue. The girls, who fell out many years ago, have sparked rumours that they may stay together after the show although nothing has been made official as of yet. I was certainly happy to see them make a return but maybe their trademark denim image should be left in the 90s where it belongs•

Electric Picnic A court case involving Electric Picnic promoters John Reynolds, and Festival Republic Dublin Ltd (FRD) has been adjourned to allow for mediation talks. According to The Irish Times,Reynolds claims FRD are imposing a "one size fits all" ethos to their festivals which is costing Electric Picnic its personality. Reynolds claims he was forced to have The Killers as headliners at last year's festival, and that FRD needed them for the following week's Berlin Festival.
New Dublin festival Longitude reveals day by day breakdown
Despite no official announcement as of yet from the EP organisers about dates or acts set to preform this year, Olaf Tyransen, a contributing journalist for Hot Press and The Herald, revealed on his personal Twitter account that he has been booked to appear at this year's Electric Picnic. This will come as welcome news to the festival’s many fans who make the pilgrimage to Co. Laois each summer.
Well it’s that time of the year again when we all start booking our holidays around the summer festivals, so as not to miss some of the greatest acts on display. Longitude will take place in Marlay Park from Friday July 19 to Sunday July 21 2013.(It is not to be confused withLatitude, which takes place in England on the same weekend and with which it shares several musical acts.) The day by day line up has finally been released and it is sure to impress as there seems to be something on offer for all music tastes. Friday will see the likes of Phonex, Foals, Django Django, Jake Bugg,Teed and Jessie Ware plus many more take the stage. Vampire Weekend, Villagers, The Maccabees, Kodaline and Local Natives are top of the line ups for Saturday. Sunday also won’t disappoint with Kraftwerk 3D,YeahYeahYeahs, Hot Chip,Modest Mouse and Mark Lanegan to name but a few. Promoted by MCD, the event is advertised as“music and arts” event with the tagline “It’s more than just a music festival.” The setup of the festival will be similar to Forbidden Fruit which takes place at Kilmainham in June, in that the venue is easily accessible from the city centre and there is no camping offered. Tickets for the event are priced at €54.50 inclusive of booking fee for day tickets.Weekend tickets (Fri, Sat, Sun) are priced €149.50 inclusive of booking fee and children 4 and under accompanied by a parent may attend free.

Oxegen a go go or a no go? We had no Oxegen in 2012, but it has been reported that the organisers are back this year for a two day event instead of their usual three day music festival. It was expected that the line up would be announced by now which also leaves people second guessing the likelihood of the event taking place at all. Should it go ahead, the dates rumored are August 3 and 4 instead of the earlier July date of previous years. The new date would mean that Oxegen will clash with other smaller festivals like Castlepalooza in Offaly and Indiependence in Cork.

36 Music I Am Not A Human Being II
How Ya Doin’ Little Mix Ft. Missy Elliott
Lil Wayne By Edward Lam
By Rachel Lynch
Little Mix have teamed up with American female rapper Missy Elliot in their new single How Ya Doin’. The girls have now settled into their own groove and have been storming the charts of late. So it was only fitting for them to be rewarded with a song featuring this music icon. In a recent interview with The Mirror, Little Mix member Jesy Nelson said, "We honestly can’t believe Missy is on our song! She’s been one of our biggest idols forever it’s incredible." This new track is very different from their most recent release Change Your Lifewhich was a slow power ballad. How Ya Doin has a 90s hip hop vibe to it and I think this may be the single for the girls to establish themselves in America. The song is very catchy and one I see being played throughout the summer. Missy Elliot turns up midway through the song for a guest rap.
Lil Wayne is one of the most polarizing artists in the music industry Those who remember the days when Lil Wayne revolutionized the rap game and whose effortless“punch line” flow and wacky voice changes have influenced everyone from Childish Gambino to Kendrick Lamar, and yes, even Macklemore:Don’t forget about“Tucci”quite yet. The album starts off with an unfiltered piano piece, dipsy doodling without a beat, like a recital in a concert hall. Classy, right? Not for long. Have you met Lil Wayne? “I’m in the crib, butt naked b---- / She said my d--- could be the next black president / Americans hate that I’m American / Medicine, I treat it like peppermints.” The opening line is tasteless, hilarious, creative, and deeper than the tone suggests. The whole album follows this pattern and exhibits Weezy’s finest traits. This is a startling — yet welcome — development considering the nosedive in quality that Lil Wayne showed in Rebirth, Tha Carter IV, and I am Not a Human Being. This is not to say I am Not a Human Being II isn’t riddled with flaws. Stay far away from the cringe worthy Romance and the sleepy “love” song Back to You that inexplicably samples a longing Jamie Lidell while
dropping lines like“Should I call somebody else? / ’Cause girl it’s almost 12 and this d--- won’t suck itself.” But a strong run of legitimate trap-style bangers in the middle of the album suggest baby steps back toward listenable and even quality music. Days and Days and Rich as F--- both featuring 2 Chainz, are fantastic and quotable. Beat the S--- hits so hard it makes me want to punch a hole in the wall, in a good way.Featuring a solid and angry verse from Gunplay, it’s hard to ignore.Trippywith Juicy J comes close to busting car speakers and will be turning heads at stoplights. The most important takeaway from I am Not a Human Being II is proof that Lil Wayne can still put together an album with actual feeling and interest. This stands in stark contrast to his half-hearted previous products that left fans disappointed and the larger public roasting him for falling off. As always, side effects of Lil Wayne include laughter (both intended and unintended), shock, the insatiable desire to dance, as well as the curiosity to find out what in the heck Weezy was thinking when he wrote that line. Make no mistake; Lil Wayne is a hip-hop legend. It’s indisputable. I am Not a Human Being II won’t go down in history with him, but it’s great to see a plateau in Weezy’s plunging trend line. The verdict: By no means a great album, but more than worth the price tag for fans.
The video is typical of the four piece band with an array of colour and the ladies all sticking to their notable styles.Missy Elliot also sticks to her original style in an eye catching bright orange tracksuit which strangely enough doesn’t look out of place. It is quite obvious Missy Elliot filmed her scenes separately from the Little Mix girls, as at no point in the video do the two artists meet. One thing that stood out to me after viewing the music video was the use of product placement throughout. This is something that is becoming quite a regular occurrence in the music industry. The main focus of the video seemed to be the hair dye which all the girls pick up during the video and hold their own box for their own particular hair colour. The camera then zooms in solely on the brand of hair colour. As well as their legions of young fans picked up during their XFactor stint, they also have the added support of One Direction band member Zayn Malik who dates Little Mix member Perrie Edwards. He tweeted to his eight million followers saying “Gotta watch the new @LittleMiixOffic video!! it’s sick and Missy Elliot’s bars are hard ! Haha x :)”

Mobile Phones
CELEBRATING
40YEARS Forty years ago (1973) a Motorola engineer called Martin Cooper made a call in Downtown Manhattan on a Motorola DynaTAC. Dialing up a rival at AT&T,he apparently said that he was ringing "To see if my call sounds good at your end." The device widely credited with being used for the first mobile conversation was nine inches tall, used 30 circuit boards and took 10 hours to recharge. Though so much has changed there are still some constants, the DynaTAC at the time claimed a talk time of 35 minutes but Mr. Cooper said years later it was more like 20 minutes. The first mobile weighed over one kilo so you couldn’t call it pocket size or even light, you could only have a 20 minute phone call before the battery went dead although most people wouldn’t have been able to hold if for too much longer without getting a sore arm.
Today, according to the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the worldwide telecoms industry has annual revenues of €850 billion and is driven by what it calls“an array of technologies, resulting in the average mobile being used to take photos, play music and games, send emails, download maps, watch video clips, all as well as talking and texting”. Past IET President Dr Mike Short says the coming years will see mobile innovation continue to change how we live. In a world where a Nokia phone can last for more than a month on a single charge, and where individual models have sold more than 150 million units, the power of technology to change – and to save – lives cannot be overstated. Not everyone, however, believes that such progress has made things simple.Mr Cooper himself told a privacy conference in Madrid as far back as 2009 that today's phones try to do many things for too many people. He’s previously criticised the Apple iPhone for being overly complicated and hard to use. Mobile phones have changed the way we live our lives and a world without texting, voice calling and mobile internet wouldn’t be the same. Mobile phones have become an indispensable part of our daily lives everyone has one. It’s a must when you are leaving the house in the morning and it has become the tool we communicate with. The new mobiles let us keep in contact with the whole world, on a modern phone you can book flights, make a reservation for dinner, and Skype your friend in Australia. You can do all of this while waiting for the bus and it is because of this that the mobile phone industry is getting bigger and bigger.Martin Cooper couldn’t have known, when he made that first call, that he was moving the world forward. Social networking is all the rage these days and since you can
get Twitter and Facebook on you phone the days of sitting in front of your computer are gone. Mobiles are the new fashion accessories very expensive fashion accessories but never the less fashion accessories. The average smart phone today has more computing power than Apollo 11 did when it journeyed to the moon! So I say Happy Birthday to the mobile phone and I’m looking to forward to seeing what innovations and inventions their next generation will bring.

40 Game By Edward Lam
Star Trek
Star Trek will be an action adventure co-op game casting players as Kirk and Spock Star Trek the game, developed by Digital Extremes and published by Namco Bandai, hits the shops on April 26, for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The Trekkies among you may notice that the game will arrive just before Star Trek Into Darkness – JJ Abram's second bite at the franchise after his 2009 reboot – hits the cinemas in May.
to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy. And for the first time ever, players are cast as Captain James T. Kirk and Spock in an unprecedented co-op experience, where the complementary personalities of these iconic characters push players to make strategic use of their alliance.
Brian Miller, Paramount Pictures’ senior vice-president and the game's producer, says that the team avoided the first game-of-a-film trap – slavishly following the plot of the film: "Our story is a completely unique and original storyline – we worked with Marianne Krawczyk who did the God Of War series. It takes place after the events in the 2009 film, and before the new one."
Star Trek fans will love this rare – and, for the first time credible – chance to immerse themselves in a game which properly evokes the Star Trek universe – there's loads of great banter between the characters, all recorded by the proper cast of the JJ Abrams films.
This action-packed Star Trek video game offers a sweeping journey of epic proportions across unexplored planets and enemy battleships with the latest 23rd century weapons and gear. It boasts a story filled with action-packed combat as Kirk and Spock work together
The ability to switch between playing as Kirk and Spock adds replay value, too. Hardcore gamers may complain that its gameplay is a tad generic, but there's no doubt that it has achieved its aim of rising above the morass of other games-of-films.

12 NG3: Razor’s Edge
Razor’s Edge an improvment on the underwhelming Ninja Gaiden 3 Much has changed since you may have read some unkind things about Ninja Gaiden 3 earlier this year. In fact, it’s not even fair to call the refurbished Razor’s Edge a “director’s cut.” Rather, it’s more like a film that’s been screen-tested, changed based on lots of negative feedback, and then released in a significantly different form than it was originally shown. Ninja badass Ryu Hyabusa has slain countless rivals and demons in his day, and that is the foundation of Ninja Gaiden 3’s gameplay.Lightning-quick moves define Ryu, be it with his trusty Dragon Sword or one of the other equally brutal weapons, such as the slicing, dicing Wolverine-esque claws or the slow-but-punishing Scythe, that you unlock over the course of the campaign. Each weapon has its own unique moves purchased with Karma points, which adds a lot of welcome variety to a game that was originally about cutting millions of guys over and over with the same single weapon and the same batch of moves. Razor’s Edge’s pure-action gameplay will certainly impress you.The long odds stacked against Ryu in nearly every situation only serve to make you feel unstoppable as you tear through the opposition, while the scores of gore effects – be it arterial sprays or severed limbs – make each encounter all the more theatrically impressive to your eye. Though the pace of combat is much smoother and faster than the first Ninja Gaiden 3 release, some moves are still glorified Quick-Time Events, and frustration abounds when Ryu doesn’t snap out of an action as fast as it seems like he should. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge was launched for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on April 5. The updated version will include additional playable characters, play modes, and more. Razor's Edge will be available in both boxed retail and digital packages.

Renault Fluence ZE
WELCOME TOTHE
FUTURE
The Renault Fluence Z.E is what the future of cars is all about. Renault have always communicated the view that for a vehicle to be in tune with the times it has to be innovative. They also emphasise for a car to be popular, it has to be practical, reliable and suited to the lifestyle and expectations of each individual. The Renault Fluence Z.E certainly ticks all the right boxes upon first glance. I headed down to Renault on the Belgard Road to test drive the model to see what all the excitement and fuss was about. The exterior of the Fluence Z.E will certainly catch your eye immediately. The Fluence Z.E design is both modern and refined. Every piece of the car has been designed to the highest of standards. The headlamps are a great feature piece, the detail on the radiator grille and the blue tint chrome is something I must compliment the car on.The cabin is spacious with plenty of legroom front and rear. Despite the vertical stacking of the battery pack behind the rear seats, the size of the boot remains the same as the conventional Fluence. For me the most important aspect of the car and the part I was most interested to learn about was the fact the model was the first all-electric saloon and because of the leased batteries it's one of the cheapest electric cars on sale too.
The Renault Fluence Z.E. is a fully electric, practical four-door saloon designed to make electric car ownership more attractive to new car buyers. Owners pay a monthly lease in order to rent the expensive battery from Renault. This is a fantastic idea as it reduces the purchase price and the risk of high maintenance or repair costs. Another fantastic advantage to buying this model is the ₏5,000 grant the government provide as an incentive to the public to purchase electric cars. This will help meet the cost of the car. Inside certainly did not disappoint, with five full sized seats the interior space is not just a concept. The only thing that looked different was there was no petrol indicator, replacing that was the battery range which displays what is left in your battery. Also the dash displays a conventional speedometer and an econometer that shows the current level of charge or discharge. Stamp the accelerator and the econometer’s needle leaps into the red; lift off during a downhill descent and it falls into the blue as the kinetic energy recovery system replenishes the battery. To start the car you turn the key, which illuminates a green go button on the dashboard display, and then engage drive from the single-speed box.The Fluence Z.E moves away almost silently, with only a faint turbine-like whine. As I took off and drove for a short distance I could not believe how smooth the car was on the road. By far the most comfortable and soothing drive, it was strange to only hear essentially the wheels of the car moving as opposed to the usual sounds you get with a petrol or diesel motor. As I came back into the garage sales consultant Robert Dunne showed me how the car is charged and explained how easy the whole process is. Firstly there are plenty of garages with charging points throughout the country so this will not be a problem what so ever.My first thought initially was to ask how do you charge the motor when at home. The ESB are providing charging points for
your home that will be placed outside the house. The charging up is unbelievably simple. One end of the lead is placed into your charge point at your home or garage and the other end into the charging point on the side wing of the car. Overall after having a drive in the Renault Fluence Z.E I feel everyone should own an electric car. With zero emissions it is the car of the future and the future is now. Renault have got it spot on here, this model has something for everyone. If you are purely into the image of a car it ticks that box and if you wish to save yourself money in the long run and be kind to the environment this is all for you too.

44 Business News By Padraig Conlon
The major concerns among those questioned were mainly regarding current and future exports. Market sentiment around current exports fell from 41% to 22%, while expectations around future exports dropped from 53% to 45%. Despite the improvements, ISME chief executive Mark Fielding claimed the Government was still not doing enough"Now that business confidence is increasing, it is incumbent on Government to put in place the appropriate environment in which business can revive and plan for a positive future. “The SME private sector must also ensure that wage rates are held for the foreseeable future, through a pay freeze for at least one year, to bring our wages more in line with our competitors.
ISME Chief Executive Mark Fielding
Small businesses more optimistic about the future There was more encouraging news on the business front this month with the release of a new survey which says the Irish small business sector appears to be moving in the right direction. The report from small business group ISME found sentiment among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) was on the up across a number of areas such as business confidence, market expectations and employment plans. The ISME report asked business owners to give their opinion on 13 aspects of running a small business in this country. In 10 of the 13 key indicators, businesses reported things were improving. Business confidence was now a net positive for the SME sector for the first time in at least two years. A majority of companies now expect to increase employment in the near future, something that has been unheard of since the recession took hold.
"The biggest concern for all SME sectors, as mentioned in the survey is economic uncertainty, demonstrating to Government that the domestic economy must be protected through a real jobs plan and a concerted effort to bring the state sector into line on costs. "The wealth generating private sector cannot continue to pay through the nose for the costly state sector and Croke Park 2 must bring greater and faster cost reductions," he said. Mr. Fielding went on to say that overall the results from the survey are promising:“The majority of SME business indicators are improving, albeit from a very low base, and are welcome. The Government must go back to basics and“think small first.”While growth in the multinational sector is important, the sectors profits are sent home and their long-term strategy only involves Ireland, as there is tax effective profit to be made. “The Irish SME sector anchored in Ireland can be “job rich” and generate a sustainable cycle of growth and reinvestment. Government must not only praise SME’s, it must invest in them.” See www.isme.ie for more details.
Local girl wins Youth Entrepreneur of the Year
Tablets now most popular items in Irish computer sales, end of the PC is nigh One of the world’s leading research companies, GfK, have taken an in depth look into sales of computing products in Ireland last year revealing a tablet focused market that seems likely to continue for the rest of 2013. GfK’s research shows a spike in tablet sales in Ireland in the fourth quarter of 2012. This was more than likely driven by Christmas and the release of several high-profile 7-inch devices, such as the iPad mini and Google’s Nexus 7 late last year. In total, tablet sales accounted for 67% of the Irish computing market in the fourth quarter of 2012, with 264% more tablets sold than notebooks and desktops combined. While the early days of 2013 have seen the rate of tablet sales slow in comparison to the previous quarter, that’s to be expected following the holiday season.Nevertheless, tablets continue to outsell notebooks, desktops and PCs to account for 57% of all computing products sold so far this year. “Since launching our retail sales tracking service for media tablets in Ireland back in October last year, our research suggests that this trend will continue throughout 2013, as lower prices will continue to drive sales of these devices,”said Robyn Tovey, GfK account executive. “However, the market will become increasingly interesting as more hybrid devices (for example, a notebook that has a detachable keyboard, making it a hybrid between a notebook and a tablet) begin to hit retail shelves.” “The rapid availability of lower-priced tablets and their growing capabilities is helping accelerate the shift away from PCs.” The traditional PC market is expected to decline worldwide by 7.6% in 2013. By 2017, there will be annual sales of around 467,951 tablets. Of the 1.875 billion mobile phones to be sold in 2013,1 billion units will be smartphones, compared with 675 million units in 2012.

Also all resources offered are either free of charge or below market value, and are valuable resources in their own right.” Loman O’Byrne, CEO of the South Dublin County Enterprise Board said “This is just one example of what the Enterprise Board and the Council can do together to support and develop businesses in our County. The formation of the LEO (Local Enterprise Offices) will formalise the existing synergy between the two organisations and there will be many more events like SMILE Resource Exchange”. Following the event attendees will also receive a report detailing all those in attendance at the event and the details of all the potential exchanges. This will support the follow up between the businesses after the event. For further information and to register for this SMILE Exchange Event please go to www.smileexchange.ie or call 01 436 1864.Registration for the event is essential as places are limited. financial institutions are not lending to any great extent, as is currently the case in Ireland. According to Central Bank figures for 2012, €40 billion in credit was advanced by the banks to SMEs in Ireland, while Irish household deposits currently stand at €86 billion. The lack of new funding for business, and the large gap between low bank deposit rates and high lending rates, creates the ideal market conditions for Linked Finance, the company's founder and CEO Peter O'Mahony says. "Linked Finance is technology offering a new and painless way for Irish businesses to borrow money from a large group of real people, including their customers, employees, and business associates. Lenders, with as little as €50 to invest, select the type of business they are willing to back and the return they expect. A credit risk algorithm is used to process loan applications, and simple online transactions link borrowers and lenders, with speed and dignity," Mr O'Mahony said.

Another Anniversary By Luke Devlin
This silence runs a tight ship now and as that tickless clock sucks the time from this musty melancholic room, another truth drips from my weary eye and stains my punch drunk heart. 40 years today since that picture was taken, with you in your whitest finery and me done up proudly like the naïve defendant on his virgin court charge. 40 years today and you have been absent in all but inked paper for the full cruel count of a shaking unsteadied hand.
Evening Conversations By Luke Devlin
Another day will take its leave and all will settle as shadows crawl and stretch to disappear. Some solitary bulb throws a dirtied glow and the notion of warmth to the dampened corners of the room as everything awaits the news of the day. A lonely, limp and listing chair will host the evening’s news affair as blackened, sooted utensils stare passively and continue the business of decay.
F*ck you and your disease that robbed me of your smile.
All the while some muted sounds from an outside town fade to a hum as evening conversation begins.
F*ck you and your undeserved pain that took the light from my life and f*ck the lot of yiz for never understanding.
“Well,Mrs.So and so from down below has finally upped and left yer man, you know!!”
Today will steal the air from my lungs and push and pull your face through the threadbare furrows of my battered heart.
A nod to acknowledge the importance of her leading tale of gloom.
I love your memory, but I hate the remembering.
“And that man from the green has been frequently seen falling home from a day having drunk his pockets clean”
God I hate it, I just, hate it. But I still love you. I still love your smell, that has never left me alone. It has held me softly when I fell and sold me sleep on the promise of seeing you again in a morning. It never happens though.
Her frown of disgust gives way to a grin as she has the attention of the room. Tonight the news is long and loud and the room is alive with deliciously embellished fact and corroborated fictions.
Middle Night by Clock’s Light By Luke Devlin
A soft green light that reels in the morning, The deep cadent breathing of a neighbouring dream. A soft green silence as a house slumbers deeply, Counting time, counting time, counting blessings and time. A slumbering house is such a curious beast, Wrapped noisily in silence and drenched with a calm. A soft green glow holds the world in slow motion, The creaking of water breaking the blanket of night. No time til the morning, no time left for night, The soft green digits that have darkened my eyes. No will left for meaning to the longest of days, The deep cadent breathing now held in a neighbouring place. The quiet loneliness of keeping this edge bending vigil, Guarding the soft green light as it sits on some dreams. As it sits on itself and blocks out the light, Wait for the bellow of sirens to take a given up ghost. Luke Devlin has been living in Blessington for the last 15 years having grown up in Aylesbury in Tallaght. He has had pieces published previously in The Tallaght Echo, The Eisteach Journal (IACP Publication) and also the IICP newsletter.
Tomorrow she will trawl the town and her precious memories to fill the hours of another evening conversation.
You are never there when I wake. You are never there but for the first few daylight blinks I forget that you’re gone and I sigh, my insides unclench and I breathe. But they are only stretching to welcome the quick cold fist of reality that announces your daily disappearance.

The Devil In The White City By Erik Larson
A thrillingly true tale The words written underneath the title sum this whole story up:“Murder, magic and madness at the fair that changed America”.I originally heard of this book on one of my favourite podcasts,Stuff You Should Knowso when I saw it hanging around in my boyfriend’s house, I jumped at the chance to borrow it. “It was so easy to disappear, so easy to deny knowledge, so very easy in the smoke and din to mask that something dark had taken root. This was Chicago,on the eve of the greatest fair in history.” Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book's categorization to be sure that The Devil in the White City is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes,a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor. Burnham's challenge was immense. In a short period of time,he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous White Cityaround which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project, and the fair's incredible success, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody,Susan B. Anthony, Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time
of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event, as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims. As Larson says is the book itself:“Beneath the gore and smoke and loam, this book is about the evanescence of life, and why some men choose to fill their brief allotment of time engaging the impossible, others in the manufacture of sorrow. In the end it is a story of the ineluctable conflict between good and evil, daylight and darkness, the White City and the Black.”
As if all this weren't enough to occupy the reader, a parallel story takes us inside the grim world of H.H. Holmes. Capitalising on the advent of the Fair, Holmes built his own hotel to attract single young women who were streaming into the city from across America in search of work, independence and a new life in the big city. I really enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected to. Its pace was energetic and both parallel stories were equally absorbing. If you’re looking for a book that’s both educational and entertaining I’d highly recommend it!
In an interview with Larson on the book’s official website he said: “The juxtaposition of the architect and the murderer seemed to open a window on the forces shaping the American soul at the dawn of the 20th century. The fair drew so many of history’s brightest lights, from Buffalo Bill to Susan B. Anthony, that doing my research was like crashing a very classy Gilded Age party.” What I found most striking about this entrancing story was that it actually happened. It’s a fascinating time in American history that I would imagine the average person has no idea about, and as well as that Burnham and Holmes are really extraordinary characters. The book combines meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling to brilliant effect. The book also tells the story of a city coming into its own. Chicago had long felt the poor relation to the sophistication of New York. This fair was an attempt to show the world that Chicago was good for more than just butchering cattle and hogs. There was also immense pressure to live up to and exceed the glamour and success of Paris’ Exposition Universel four years earlier, which showed off France's self-proclaimed superiority in art, manufacturing, science, and engineering. That they succeeded, against amazing odds, is one of American history's great forgotten miracles. Although the fair's theme gave a backward nod to the 400th anniversary of Columbus bumping into the Americas on his way to India, its vision was futuristic:for the first time, electric lighting, clean water, and planned green spaces could be experienced on a massive scale. Innovations - the Ferris Wheel, the hamburger, an elevated railway, Juicy Fruit gum, the zip fastener and shredded wheat among them - enhanced the feeling that the next century would belong to America. The buildings were monumental, the exhibits eclectic (one example:a map of the USA made entirely of pickles) and the visitors were awestruck. They called it the White City, from the colour of main buildings that were imposing by day, dazzling by night. Much of this was down to Daniel Burnham. His can-do reputation for building skyscrapers made him a natural choice as project manager. But we're frequently reminded that he had to push himself to the limit and step on quite few toes to ensure the Fair's success, a job made all the more difficult by economic recession, bickering architects, striking workers, pompous politicians and Chicago's notorious weather.

The Devil In The White City won the 2004 Edgar Award in the Best Fact Crime category.

Adult Acne
Useful Ingredients Found in Products Designed for Acne: Salicylic acidhas the ability to penetrate the oils in the follicles and reduces swelling, redness and unplugs blocked skin pores to allow spots to shrink. Benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria and slows down your glands' production of oil. It works as a peeling agent, accelerating skin turnover and clearing pores, reduces bacteria, which in turn gets rid of those red painful spots. Retin A helps unblock plugged pores. It is an acid from vitamin A,also known as all-trans retinoic acid.It induces peeling of the skin, but this is ideal to prevent scarring. Retin-A has been used widely to combat aging of the skin, it also acts as a chemical peel. Azelaic Acidstrengthens cells that line the follicles, stops oil eruptions, reduces bacteria growth.Azelaic acid also mops up freeradicals, whichreducesinflammation.Itisusefulforpeople who experience discolouration that spots leave behind.
HOWTO DEALWITHTHE CURSE
OF ADULT ACNE For many people there is a feeling of relief when they leave their teen years behind them and believe that they have safely left the age of acne. Although, we don't just associate it with adolescents anymore. One in five people between the ages of 25 and 40 suffer from adult acne, so rest assured, you're not alone. I developed cystic acne several years ago when I was 23, and it is a debilitating disorder that can have severe effects on your self confidence. Ironically, at the time, I had started working as a therapist in a laser clinic that specialised in treating problematic skin types. I started using a cosmeceutical brand - called Jan Marini - which has high levels of active ingredients that I discuss further on. I received regular skin peels in conjunction with laser treatment to help kill the bacteria and prevent scarring, and I have never looked back. I have held allegiance to Jan Marini ever since! I still use them and provide the skin care treatments today. It can be difficult to define exactly what causes it. It is believed that a rise in androgen levels - a type of hormone - may trigger it.Stress is a big factor with this. Also it can be genetic, there may be hormonal changes in the body, and bad cosmetics which can block pores.Research has shown that dairy can also have an affect on it. Improving your diet by increasing omega 3 fatty acids, foods rich in selenium, fibre and zinc can all help fight acne. But I think anyone who suffers from acne knows that there's a bit more to it than what we are eating, and it needs to be treated topically as well as systemically.
Here's the science... People who have an oilier skin and are prone to acne due to genetics and stress produce oil that is thicker, and it forms a plug at the opening of the pore and creates a blackhead - some people are lucky enough never to progress past this early stage. This pore becomes air tight, and gives bacteria room to grow. This then causes red, inflamed pustules that are quite painful. When these pustules become large or cystic, the follicle wall can rupture, and this is what causes scarring, or pitting in the skin. Men have higher levels of testosterone than women, and more oil glands on the body so can suffer from more aggressive forms of acne that can last longer. Acne is not the result of dirty or unclean skin. Sufferers tend to over wash their face to "dry" it out. This will result in stripping the skin of natural oils. The skin then over compensates by producing more oil, and the skin will become dehydrated. So now you have very oily skin that feels tight and uncomfortable - a sign that your skin is dehydrated.Even though there may be an excess of oil being produced, we all need sufficient levels of moisture in our skin to keep it hydrated. That's why a lot of acne sufferers don't like to moisturise their skin because they think they are adding to oil production. As long as the correct products are being used and they are "non-comedogenic", they will keep your skin moisture levels in tact.
With the right facial treatments and being regimental with home care products, acne can be a thing of the past. If you would like more information or advice you can contact me by phone (086 378 3516) or email (info@skinkandy.ie).

Composting
David Frazer Landscape Gardener Dave is from Kilnmanagh in Tallaght. He has over 30 years experience as a professional Garden Landscaper.Dave currently manages his own sucessful Garden Landscaping business.
LOVE THE ENVIRONMENT, LOVE YOUR GARDEN,
LOVE COMPOSTING ! Making compost is often considered to be difficult but all you need to do is provide the right ingredients and let nature do the rest. The first rule of composting is to know what goes on the heap and what goes in the bin.
The compost bin can be built of wood, pallets, hay bales, cavity blocks, stakes and chicken-wire.It should measure at least 1.3m x 1.3m x 1.3m.
For starters, perennial weeds and anything that is diseased should be put in your brown bin for removal, and anything too woody, unless finely shredded, should be bagged up and taken to your local tip. Avoid meat, dairy and cooked food unless you want to attract a family of rats to your garden.
For best results, use a mixture of types of ingredient when composting. The right balance is something learnt by experience, but a rough guide is to use equal amounts by volume of greens and browns. The brown materials provide carbon for your compost, the green materials provide nitrogen, and the water provides moisture to help break down the organic matter.
Set up a separate bin for your kitchen peelings and pods, and ask family to use it.The autumn clear up, especially of the herbaceous borders, will also give you plenty of raw material to compost, but make sure larger pieces are chopped or shredded. Grass cuttings are a constant source of controversy; you can use them by all means but layer them between other fibrous material, to avoid a smelly black slurry . Dead leaves can be tricky if just dumped on a heap. But they are worth persisting with. It is best to store them separately in perforated plastic bags or, better still, in cages made from chicken-wire. They will compost, but in two years rather than months. The next question is whether the compost heap should be wet or dry, it will have to be covered with something like an old piece of carpet or plastic, this will help build up the heat and accelerates decomposition. But it pays to leave it exposed sometimes to rain and it shouldn’t be allowed to dry out completely.Materials in the compost pile should be kept as moist as a squeezed sponge. There are a variety of bins on the market but they are all just a container for the composting process and a bin is not strictly necessary. You can just build a heap and cover it over with some polythene or cardboard. Bins do look neater and are easier to manage. You can build your own.
Composting is so worth the effort. Adding compost to your garden feeds the soil and provides a slow release of nutrients to your crops.Compost also vastly improves soil structure, allows the soil to hold in moisture better and improves friability. The finished product should be a rich, dark colour, crumbly texture,sweet-smelling with an earthy odour. Compostable food wastes include fruit and vegetable scraps, raw vegetable peelings from your kitchen, tea bags and leaves, coffee grounds.Waste paper and junk mail composts slowly, so it should comprise no more than 10% by weight of the total pile. You can also compost shredded confidential waste cardboard e.g. cereal packets egg boxes and newspaper. Bedding from pets e.g. rabbits, guinea pigs hay, straw, shredded paper, wood shavings, old bedding, plants, egg shells (crushed) hair clippings, feathers, livestock manure, cow and horse manure; and well-rotted, bonemeal and bloodmeal can also be composted. Try, if possible, to collect enough compost materials to make a layer of at least 30cm or more in the compost bin in the bottom put a 10cm (4in) layer of coarse material, such as straw or twigs in a 15cm (6in) layer of garden waste and a little water if it’s dry. Put in alternate layers of different materials - like a sandwich.

Call 087 243 4211 or 01 452 3979 The compost pile should be located in a warm area and protected from overexposure to wind and too much direct sunlight. While heat and air help composting, overexposure dries the materials. The location should not offend neighbours mixing the pile with a pitchfork or shovel, or shifting it into another bin, provides the oxygen necessary for decomposition and compensates for excess moisture. A pile that is not mixed may take 20 times longer to decompose. Use a fork to turn the heap every few days more frequent turning results in faster composting, bad odours indicate that the pile is too damp or lacks oxygen, and that more frequent turning is necessary. This process adds air to the mix and helps it rot down faster. Do not use fish, poultry, dairy products, foods containing animal fats, human/pet feces, weeds with established seed heads, and plants infected with or highly prone to disease, such as roses and peonies, coal or charcoal ashes as it might contain substances harmful to plants. Pet wastes (e.g., dog or cat feces, soiled cat litter) might also contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses harmful to humans. Occasional watering may be necessary to keep the pile damp, especially in dry weather. Covering the pile with black plastic reduces the need for watering; it also prevents rainwater from draining out the nutrients. By making your own compost, this keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The more compost you can add to your soil over time, the more fertile and well-structured it will become, and the less fertiliser you will need to apply to keep the soil in a healthy, balanced condition. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus will be produced naturally by the feeding of microorganisms.

Deadlifts
THE KING OF ALL
EXERCISES It’s the last lift in any powerlifting meet as it makes or breaks the competition, and, is without a doubt the most practical gym lift as we tend to pick heavy things off the ground on a daily basis You'd be hard-pressed to find a single weight-training movement that is more "complete" than the deadlift. It's not just an upper or lower-back exercise, a grip exercise, a posterior chain exercise, or a core exercise; it's an “everything” exercise. To that end, it's definitely a must-have in any lifter, athlete, or weekend warrior's training programme. However, when most people deadlift, they seem do so with one clear goal in mind; to end up on a physio table. I am going to make sure that doesn’t happen. Set up If you are a powerlifter and have good reason to be performing a sumo deadlift, then the following does not
apply to you. If you are among the other 99.9% of the population, listen up. - Stand with feet placed under the bar, slightly narrower than shoulder-width, and with the barbell a few of inches from your shins. - Take a deep breath, maintain a ‘big’ chest and pull your shoulders back and down, ensuring a straight back. - Send your hips back and down and lower into a quarter squat before gripping the bar. - Grip the bar with a mixed grip;one hand under, one hand over. - Once you grip the bar, lift your chest and keep the tension running all the way up your posterior chain. - From there, pull the weight off the ground, pushing through your mid-foot/heels. - As your hips open, your shoulders should open simultaneously. - At the top of the movement lock it out by ensuring your shoulders are behind the bar. - Finish the lift by sending your hips back at the top of the lift and lower the weight down under control. Also Ensure you do the following: Pull the slack out of the bar - This is likely the most important tip.You need to imagine your arms as just hooks; you shouldn't have any bend in your elbows at the start of your pull.Lest you think this is just a minor distinction, simply "yanking" the bar with your arms is a fine way to wind up on the operating table with torn biceps! Instead, use the weight of the barbell to pull yourself into position by engaging the lats, upper back, and hip flexors.Keep the hips fairly high and then sit way back. Remember again to pull yourself down – don't "squat" into position.
Push through your heels - A great cue that always stuck with me was to "Push your heels to OZ”. Pushing your heels through the ground delivers a much better start to the deadlift, whereas a "yanker",will often use too much lower back to finish the pull. It may help to think of the start of the pull as a standing leg press. The initial knee extension puts your body into the perfect hinge position where you can finish the lift with your glutes and hamstrings. Put your hips through the bar - Once the bar breaks the floor and reaches just below knee level, you're essentially in a pure hip hinge position with your knees soft and hips high and back.As the bar approaches your knees, think about shooting your hips through the bar. This helps your hips take the brunt of the load and not your lower back. - Keep tension in your posterior chain by maintaining a neutral back and hips in a quarter squat, not a parallel squat. - Move the weight fast off the floor. - Lift in bare feet or flat shoes; not runners or weightlifting shoes as they will absorb power and throw your weight forward. - Never miss a lift due to sweaty hands - use chalk, and if your gym doesn’t allow it, you need a new gym. One last piece of advice that would have to go to novice lifters: be patient with your gains, and if you want to hit a new PB, don’t force it by rounding your back. Now go forth, lift correctly and lift heavy and dominate this awesome movement.

Terenure RFC took the best of the early exchanges and ran in a number of tries.Tallaght were playing into the breeze and even though there was great tackling from Matthew Needham, Dylan Tobin, Leah Sweeney and Scott Oneil, Terneure showed their experience and took control of the first half. However Tallaght were no push overs and showed their increasing confidence and skill.Forwards scrummed well and won all their own and stole a couple of Terenures lineouts. The never say die attitude from Tallaght shone through and with 3 or 4 players trying to stop him Adohan Jones was pushed over the try line by Manus Cannon, Josh ONeil and Shane Long. There were 2 more tries from Simon and runs from Shane McGann and Evan Tyrell that were very close to becoming tries and the half closed with Tallaght out scoring Terenure 5 to 4. Tallaght lost match but with a display like they had in the second half they will only keep going from strength to strength. All supporters, of whom Tallaght had a large number, players and coaches did Tallaght RFC proud. All new players boys and girls are welcome and training takes place on Sunday mornings at 11am in Ballymana Lane. Please contact www.tallaghtrugby.comfor more information or Philip on 0857371926.

Dubs close in on League success The Dubs continued their march towards a first National League Football title in two decades in HQ on Sunday April 14 when they put Mayo to the sword for the second time this year.
Dublin’s Johnny Cooper And Mayo’s Michael Conroy
Bernard Brogan returned to the attack and scored 0-5 in the 6 point victory which once again saw the Dubs being omnipotent in front of the sticks, with no less than seven players getting on the scoresheet! They now face Tyrone in the final as they hope to bridge the 20 year gap and bring the title home!

ROBERT GOGGINS will be familiar to all Shamrock Rovers fans through his long association with the club. In his role as club historian he has written three books about the Hoops and also previously served on the Supporters Club Committee and as editor of the club programme.
How long have you been a Rovers supporter? It goes back to the time when Johnny Giles came back from England to manage Rovers,1977.He was a massive star at the time after his spell with Leeds United and he decided to leave West Bromwich Albion to come to Rovers. This sparked some interest in me.Also at the time I had some friends who were Rovers fans. The first match I went to was in January 1980 vs. Galway United at Milltown, Rovers won 1-0. Before that I’d never realised Irish soccer was as good as it was. I loved Milltown, the atmosphere, the supporters, I loved everything about it.
You must have been heartbroken in 1987 when it was decided to sell the ground?
Yes I was. I was serving on the Supporters Club Committee at the time and we had no idea it was going to happen, we were shocked.A lot of damage was done to the club at that time, a lot of people never came back to watch Rovers after that.
Did you fear for the future of the club then? Yes we did, we were very worried that the club would go under.Being involved we could see what was happening and we were fearful. Then from 1996 on we were continually being told that the move to a new stadium would only be a matter of time, it was only a short time away, and of course nothing was happening.
Was this the lowest moment for you supporting the club? Yes leaving Milltown and then from 1995/96 to 2005, when the club went into examinership, are definitely the lowest points. However going into examinership also worked out well for the club because after that they were able to start with a clean sheet and they got a great groundswell of support from their creditors.
Who is your favourite Rovers of all time?
InTallaght34Master_Layout 1 17/04/2013 18:01 Page 57
12 My favourite player would be Gino Brazil who played centre half from 1989 to 2001. He was very intelligent, very reliable, a great player and also a very good friend. The best player in my time supporting them would be Pat Byrne who played in midfield for five years. His story was a little like Johnny Giles, he came back from Scotland to play for Rovers, he was very influential and he captained the team during the four in a row.
What is the most memorable match you were at?
but a lot of people said why didn’t I write about all of Rovers history instead of just one quarter of it.My mother died while I was writing it so I lost a bit of time.
What has been your most memorable season? In the more modern times the 2011 season. As well as winning the league and the Setanta Cup we had the European odyssey and probably the greatest night in the club’s history when they beat Partizan away.
Rovers v Celtic in the European Cup 1986 at Milltown. It was a massive occasion. I remember the atmosphere was fantastic, maybe the best I ever remember, which was probably because we had been there since early in the day!
Also the last season at Milltown was very memorable as Rovers won the FAI Cup for the third time in a row and the league for the fourth time in a row.
It was a great match even though Rovers lost 1-0 to an 86th minute goal. They had left themselves open at the back trying to win it and conceded late on because of this.In recent times we had the Real and Juve games of course, which were both very memorable as well.
If you could change one thing about the League Of Ireland what would it be?
As well as being on the Rovers Supporters Club Committee you also were the editor of the match programme, how did that come about? In 1986 the Kilcoyne family had stopped producing the programme so the Supporters Club decided to start doing it. I took over from Liam Christie but I only got one year doing it at Milltown. I ended up being the editor until 1996. It was a labour of love, just like everything I’ve done with the club. If I had been getting paid I probably wouldn’t have loved it as much!
You recently released your third book on Rovers,The Chronological History of Shamrock Rovers, how long did it take you to write it? It took two years to get it done. Because of my work on my two previous books I already had a lot of stuff. I had started a 25 year history of the club, from leaving Glenmalure to Tallaght
There’s lots of things I’d like to change. One of them would be the fundamental problem of the provincial clubs being in the doldrums. Clubs like Waterford, Athlone, Finn Harps, they’re not getting the chance to play the bigger clubs like Rovers, Bohs, Pats and this is being reflected in the attendances in the First Division. I think the FAI should start with one big division, that’s what the public want to see. I also think though the facilities at a lot of the grounds has to improve.Tallaght Stadium,Turners Cross and the Showgrounds are great but a lot of the others aren’t. If you don’t have the facilities nowadays people aren’t going to come.
Your most memorable story from your time supporting the Hoops? Paddy Coad had joined Rovers from Waterford in 1942 and was a brilliant player. Then in 1949 the manager Jimmy Dunne died suddenly from a heart attack and Coad took over as player manager and was a massive success, his team were known as Coads Colts and they were one of the best at the time winning 19 trophies from 1954 to 59. My Dad was always talking about him.Well in 1987, the last year of Milltown, we invited him to the end of season awards to present him with a Hall of Fame Award, he didn’t know he was getting it. He came along on the night and even though the place was star studded with club legends Paddy got the biggest reception of anyone. He was very humble, a gentleman and it was so good to get to meet him.

58 What has been the highlight of your career so far? That night in Serbia against Partizan when we did the unthinkable, that was some achievement, something that might never happen again, beating a team with a budget 30 times bigger than ours. I remember thinking as the game went on that we had a chance, we could win it.When I was coming on as sub Michael O Neill said to me “Go on and win this for us.” When that penalty went in it was the best feeling of my life! They were unbelievable scenes, great memories.
KARL SHEPPARD returned to Rovers on a six-month loan deal from Reading FC at the end of January. Karl is a former Irish Youth International who spent three years with Everton before returning to Ireland to join Galway in 2010. After a very successful spell in the west he made his first move to the Hoops in 2011, scoring 15 goals that year as Rovers won the league title. His impressive performances in both the league, and Europe, that season led to a move to Reading in January 2012.
How did the return to Rovers come about? It was down to myself and Trevor really, when he got the job with Rovers I contacted him to say congratulations and he got back on to me see how things were going and said he thought I should come back for a spell as I wasn’t getting games with Accrington. Since my move to Reading in January last year I didn’t really settle well in the UK. I got injured within two months and this had me down off the pitch. It had been the same when I went to Everton at 16; I had trouble settling in then as well. I went to Accrington on loan and I wasn’t happy there either. I could’ve gone on loan to another club in the UK but I preferred to come back to Ireland. I’m delighted to be back and playing with Rovers. If I’m happy off the pitch I’ll be happy on it.
playing; obviously want to get off the mark soon. I’m just taking it one game at a time.
How do you explain the run of draws Rovers have had? We all have to look at ourselves and take responsibility. In the first two or three games we were quite unlucky but in the other games we’ve underperformed,we can’t say we’ve been unlucky for six matches! We have to start taking our chances, cut out the silly mistakes, the silly bookings which have led to people getting sent off.We have to keep doing what we’re good at, getting it down and playing football.
Did you support any League of Ireland club when you were a kid? Shels probably. I played for them at 16s and my Da used to bring me to watch them. As I grew up I didn’t really support anyone. I’d always much rather play football than watch it as you can have an effect on the outcome if you’re playing.
What player did you most admire when you were young? Andy Cole. He was an amazing goal scorer, him and Yorkes link up play was phenomenal; I loved watching him when I was a kid. I never really had any other specific player that I liked more than the others; I’d watch any player to see if there was anything they had that I could add to my game. It’s the same now. I admire the way Ronaldo comes off the wing to attack the back post for a header, I remember seeing him do it in the last World Cup towards the end of a game, and how his speed got him in there. I suppose that’s one example of something I’d see another player doing that I try to incorporate into my own game.
If you could change Are you confident the anything about the Would you like your team can turn it round? League Of Ireland what loan move to become would it be? permanent? I’ll play it by ear at the moment. I’m just taking each game as it comes then in July when the loan is up I’ll sit down with Reading and Rovers and see what happens, I can’t say anything yet, but if I’m enjoying myself I’ll be happy to stay.It also depends on whether Reading want me back. I’m quite happy at the moment with how I’m
Definitely. You hear rubbish that Trevor’s under pressure, which is absolute nonsense. There is no better manager in the league than Trevor, everyone is right behind him.The football we’ve played at the start of this season is the best football we’ve played in my time at Rovers; we’ve just not killed teams off.
I’m confident it’s all going to click. We’re like a train building up speed, once we get going we’re going to be hard to stop. Sligo have made a great start, we just have to try to close that gap and build up momentum.
The attitude towards it.The public need to realise that there’s very good players playing in it, I’m surprised that it’s looked at so poorly. Is there any other league of a similar size in Europe that has had as many international players come through it in recent years? I think the last Ireland squad had eight or nine lads who had played in the League Of Ireland. I think some of the clubs could be a little bit more professional. I was very impressed when we went up to Limerick a few weeks ago. They have a great set up and they’ve
InTallaght34Master_Layout 1 17/04/2013 18:01 Page 59
set the benchmark with their move to Thomand Park. After the match they provided a full dinner for us which was great and meant we got to eat properly which can be hard when you’re on the road. It’s the little things that make a big difference.
Are you for or against summer football? I’m definitely in favour of it. A lot of clubs have trouble with their pitches, when we played Bohs recently theirs was horrendous. Ours isn’t great at the moment either. Imagine how poor they’d be if we had a winter league. Also it helps Irish clubs in Europe as well as they can catch clubs who are only in pre season.
Who is the toughest opponent you’ve ever faced? Younes Kaboul, he was different class when we played Spurs. I remember looking over at him and thinking “He’s an animal!”He was probably only playing in third gear that night but he was still a machine.
IF I’M HAPPY OFFTHE PITCH
I’LL BE HAPPY ON IT
