04 4 A Note From Our Team ByPadraig Conlon

Hi Everyone, You’re all very welcome to Edition 35 of InTallaght Magazine. We hope we find you all in great form and that you all enjoy this, our 8th edition of 2013. For the main interview in this issue we spoke with the Rubberbandits ahead of their gig in Tallaght at the end of May. As well as speaking with the two mentalists from Limerick we also spoke with local musician and Voice of Ireland contestant Ray Scully, who will be supporting the Rubberbandits on the night. The secondary interview is with Dublin singer songwriter Ryan O Shaughnessy. Following his success in reaching the final of Britains Got Talent last year Ryan is hard at work on building a career for himself in the music business. We caught up with him during a recent video shoot for a chat about his forthcoming album. This edition’s Square Magazine includes news on the recent Isadora masterclass in the centre mall when international make up artist Stephan Oien came to give advice on what products to choose and how to apply them.

Citywise readying themselves for German trip A team of seven students from Citywise Education Youth Centre in Jobstown are preparing to head off to Germany to proudly represent Ireland in the FIRST LEGO League Open European Championship. The lads qualified for the finals after they were crowned Irish Champions in the national competition in Galway back in January following a nail biting live final battle against the French team. Mentor Chris Smith said the team is really looking forward to taking part in the completion, which will be held in the Heinz-Nixdorf-Museums Forum in Paderborn, Germany, from May 7th to May 10th.“The lads are all really excited to be going over to Germany to the FLL European finals and they’re working really hard to get everything ready. “The FLL Challenge has three parts - the Robot Game, the Project, and the Core Values. The Robot Game and Project are what teams do, and the Core Values guide teams through the experience.

“There will be 54 teams from more than 35 countries competing so the lads are very proud to be representing their country. “We leave on Tuesday 7th May and we’ll be in Germany for five days,” said Gary. Everyone at InTallaght Magazine wishes the lads, their mentors and parents the very best of luck and we know they’ll do Tallaght and Ireland proud. See www.citywise.ie for updates.

Two dancers from Tallaght are set to be involved in a world premier performance in the Civic Theatre this month The girls are members of the Irish National Youth Ballet and both will be taking part in the group’s Spring Performances in the Civic from May 9 -11. The programme includes the Sleeping Beauty Suite, Oklahoma and the world premiere of The Princess Iolanthe. The two girls flying the flag for Tallaght are Saoirse Delaney (16) from Aylesbury and Chloe O’Connor (10) from Jobstown. Saoirse originally started doing hip-hop dancing when she was seven before taking up the tutu and pointe shoes when she was nine.Chloe has been dancing for seven years and this is her first year with the INYB. Katherine Lewis is the artistic director with the INYB and she explained to InTallaght Magazine what those attending could expect:“This will be a unique opportunity to enjoy a ballet world premiere in the Civic, with the exciting addition of live music played by the Orchestra of the Irish National Youth Ballet. Alla Pavlova, the composer of the music for The Princess Iolanthe, which will receive its world premiere, will join us from America especially for the premiere.” The INYB is a registered charity whose aim is to provide an opportunity for young Irish Ballet dancers to train as a company with internationally trained teachers and visiting choreographers.“Each year open auditions are held for places in the company. The dancers in the company are from all over Ireland, with some local dancers fromTallaght andTempleogue,” said Katherine, who has been Artistic Director since 2007. “The INYB mission is to enable talented young dancers to stay in Ireland and receive world-class training and to develop and maintain the highest artistic standards.Irish National Youth Bal-

let Company works in conjunction with the private dance teacher and is an advanced supplement to their private training. “It also aims to showcase the talents of Professional Irish Ballet dancers who have successful performance careers abroad. These dancers appear as guest artists in Irish National Youth Ballet performances.” Sleeping Beauty Suitehas all the famous dance numbers from the Waltz, Rose Adage, White Cat & Puss in Boots to the Gold, Silver and Diamond Fairies from the full length ballet The Sleeping Beauty. Oklahoma tells the story of two pairs of lovers. Curly is a cowboy who has trouble admitting his feelings to Laurey. Ado Annie is torn between Will, a cowboy who has strong feelings for her and Ali Hakim, a ladies' man who doesn't want to marry her. The Princess Iolanthe lives blissfully unaware that she lacks the sense of sight until a young foreign prince falls deeply in love with her and unwittingly explains the concept of colour, defying the Queen’s order Irish Junior Ballet was co-founded by Anne CampbellCrawford, Paris, France and Professor Jean Wallis of the Akademie der Tanzen, Heidelberg, Germany. The company had its first auditions in 1995 and gave its first performance in February 1996 at the Royal Hibernian, Gallagher Gallery, Dublin. The age group of dancers was 10-21 years. A junior level for children aged 8 years and over was established in September 1999. The name was changed to Irish National Youth Ballet Company (INYB) in the summer of 1999 with the approval of the Arts Council. INYB aims are to provide young dancers with an enriching experience during their formative years and to give them a flavor of what it might be like to pursue a career in dance. Katherine Lewis has recently broadened the INYB repertoire with newly commissioned works and existing works from Irish and international choreographers. Katherine intends to extend the performance schedules and to increase the exposure of the company's work through television and increased international touring. See www.inybco.com for more on the company or www.civictheatre.ie for tickets.

12 We’ve A Horse Outside By Padraig Conlon

hawks and falcons here in Malta. We do gigs when we’re not falconing.

What do the English make of you? Blind Boy: They make sh*t of us in the sack. The women anyway.

What do you think of the English? Mr Chrome: I’m not into Judging an entire group of people based on a few individuals. That being said, every English person I’ve met so far has been sound.

Comedy rap duo The Rubber Bandits consist of members BlindBoy Boat Club and Mr. Chrome. The pair have gone from strength to strength since they arrived on the national stage with their 2010 popular hit single Horse Outside. InTallaght Magazine caught up with the lads ahead of their appearance in Tallaght at the end of May where they will be supported by local musician Ray Scully.

Are you glad to be done with RTÉ? A lot of people think they muzzled ye too much on Republic Of Telly? Mr Chrome: We’re not done with RTÉ.We just like to broaden our horizons and set bigger goals. Blind Boy: We’ve loads of time for RTÉ, sound bast*rds to work with. Especially the lads on Republic of Telly.

You’re coming back to Dublin; do you guys get a good response What was the response from the Jackeens? like to your pilot show on Channel 4 Is this your first time last November? playing in Tallaght? What’re you expecting? Have you lads took the Queens shillin’ now and moved permanently to the UK? Why’d you guys leave Ireland?

Mr Chrome:We were approached by Marty Whelan in a car park concerning some money that we owed him. He had a hammer and told us to leave Ireland,so we did. You don’t disagree with Marty Whelan.

Blind Boy: Ah Ya, we Love the Dubs. We’ve always gotten along with the Dubs. Not like Cork people.

Blind Boy: Great, we were invited to a gangbang as a result of it.

Mr Chrome: Ya first time. We’re expecting a wet Jersey Shore and loads of beeps when people curse. I dunno, Tallaght is supposed to be Dublin city’s cool little brother so hopefully we’ll have the craic.

Mr Chrome: No, we moved to Malta and travel from here. We’re avid falconers so we started a sanctuary for

I believe you’ve also done some work with MTV, any plans to move to USA? Blind Boy:Ya, we did a load of stuff with them.I’m not ready for America, it’s too weird. Canada now, I’d shift the face off Canada.

What was the craic like in Australia on your tour recently? Mr Chrome: Australia is like a hot Galway and everything is twice as expensive.

What do you think of the Irish Rap scene?

15 Blind Boy:Like any scene you’ve got talented boys and untalented boys. The talented boys that I’m aware of are Lethal Dialect,Rejjie Snow from Dublin City, and Nu Centz from Tallaght is savage too. I won’t bother mentioning any untalented boys, that’s bad form.

What do you enjoy most the music, the TV or the stage shows? Blind Boy: Making music and writing for TV is the biggest craic of all. If we could do just that then we’d be sorted.

Any plans to ditch the bags for some more comfortable headwear? Mr Chrome: One of our fans from New York actually knitted us plastic bags out of wool recently. Then we tweeted a photo of us wearing the kitted bags, so he knitted the tweet and now it’s hanging in an Art Gallery. True story.

Were you surprised when Willie O Dea defended ye on Liveline? Mr Chrome: Ah Willie’s sound, I wasn’t surprised by that. I was more surprised when he agreed to become our touring DJ.

Blind Boy:I’d like to work as a Commis chef in a Carvery with Kurt Coabain as the head chef, and Pete Postletwaithe as the Maitre D.

Who gets the most women? Mr Chrome: It depends where we are. In Ireland we have to be openly gay with each other for tax purposes. And then when are abroad Willie O DJ would get the most flap for sure. Once, we were in an airport waiting for luggage around one of those revolving luggage things, and a suitcase came out and Willie O DJ was on top of it, getting inside boob off an airhostess.

How do ye relax when ye’re not working?

What are your plans for the Rubberbandits for the future? Blind Boy: Do a load of speed and fall into a river. Local musician Ray Scully recently took part in RTÉ show The Voice and did Tallaght proud by making it to the Quarter Finals. He will be supporting The ‘Bandits when they play The Old Mill at the end of this month.

Ray, you have a If you weren’t famous gig coming up rappers what other jobs soon supporting would you be doing? The Rubberbandits in Tallaght? Mr Chrome: We’d be milkmen, or we‘d own a hot air baloon company.Ideal situation, we’d deliver milk in a hot air baloon.

Why are Limerick so shit at Gaelic football and hurling? Blind Boy: Jaysus, I didn’t think ye Tallaght heads would be into GAA. I thought that was just for culchies?

Do ye think the Munster Rugby team is not the force it was?

Blind Boy: I Know f*ck all about sports. Ask me about art.

If you could get to work with anyone who would it be?

Blind Boy: Sideways rain, Ireland is the only place that has it. Every where else is either dry or has vertical rain.

Blind Boy: We go to a river and throw Berrocca tablets into it, and then observe all the bubbles.

You boys still in the Freemasons?Ye were outed by some keyboard warrior last year?! Do you think that fame has changed you at all?

Blind Boy:Ya, we actually joined the Freemasons with Derek Davis and Marion Finucanne last year. We go to a mountain in Wexford and worship a goat every November. Don Conroy had his eyebrows burnt off by a ceremonial bonfire the last time.

What do ye miss most when ye’re away?

Mr Chrome: Ya, I was involved in an accident at a science museum in Toronto and now I’m slightly magnetic. It wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t gigging in Toronto like. My Ma won’t let me into the house either. The last time a load of spoons stuck to my shoulder.

I’ve no idea what to expect from that one! I know a good few of their songs and I’ve seen them on The Republic Of Telly, it’s going to be a mad one I’d say!

Are you happy with your whole experience of The Voice? Yeah buzzing about it, it was such a good experience; I’m delighted I got to do what I did on it. I think I came across as my own self, everything I sang and everything I said I felt comfortable with it, I’m so happy. I’m glad I went for it; it’s gotten me great exposure. At the end of the last show I’d said the show wasn’t for me, what I meant was that I was hoping to use the show as a platform for other musicians to want to go and do it but it’s just the way the voting system works,it’s horrible. If you’re from Donegal you get the whole Donegal vote, if you’re from Cork you get the whole Cork vote, the majority of people aren’t voting.

How did you get on with your mentor Kian Egan? He’s a really nice guy; he’s handy to work with.If it hadn’t been for him I wouldn’t have got to do Teardrop. He’s

InTallaght35Master_Layout 1 01/05/2013 14:45 Page 16

16 good, really helpful and he really liked me an awful lot. He said he’s going to do his best to help me out in any way possible.

How did you get on with the other judges? They all just stick to themselves really; it’s all a game. The way the scoring was put in I think was just for tactics, if you give someone a 4 or 5 it nearly gives people more of a push to vote for that person but if you get a 10 people think “Ah he’s totally grand!” and don’t bother voting. That’s just my opinion anyway, I could be totally wrong.

Did you make any friends from the show? Yeah I did make good friends with Andrew Mann, who’s another working musician and Andy Mac Unfraidh, Tammy Brown as well, we were a little circle of working musicians, and the rest of them wanted to get work, it was a little clique we had going on!

Has being on The Voice raised your profile? Yes it’s helped my exposure, I’m getting recognised a lot more now, it’ll help when I’m releasing my new album, hopefully it’ll help with sales.

Tell us about the new album? The album’s finished I’m just waiting for a nice date to release it, in two weeks time hopefully. Originally I was going to call it Coming Home, then I had a few other different names but I’ll probably just self-title it Ray Scully. It’ll be all original material; well I might throw one sneaky cover in there that I’ve recorded! There’s a good bit of blues on it and a lot of folky stuff, some dark songs. There’s a full band in it, with cello, bass, little bit of violin, drums, bongos. Altogether there are probably four or five different guitar parts, it’s going to be big but it’s not going to be loud or heavy, nice easy listening stuff. It’s a mixture of Rory Gallagher and Mumford And Sons, total different worlds nearly! Hopefully it’ll appeal to everybody.

You weren’t tempted to do any of the covers you did on The Voice? I was tempted to do Teardrop but I want to keep it original, I don’t like doing covers gigs; I’d rather play my own stuff to people. I’d rather get my own songs out there first then eventually maybe release one.

What are your plans for the summer? I’m going to try and get in to all the festivals; it’s one thing Kian said he might be able to help me out with. I’m going to hopefully do a bit of travelling as well,a few gigs around Europe, go over to Amsterdam, Berlin and just do a few odd random gigs over there. I’ll also be playing in Grumpys every Friday for the Grumpy Sessions. Any acts that would like to play in them get in touch with me through my website Ray Scully Music or my Facebook page.

Were you nervous doing the live shows? The first live show I was mad nervous,I don’t know what happened to me, everything got to me, then after that I kind of learned from that mistake and I just treated it like I was at home.

Finally Ray I believe you were annoyed with one of the tabloids after leaving The Voice? Yes, one of them totally twisted my words to make a sensational story.I had said loads of positive things about the show and they twisted it altogether. It’s really strange when you look in a paper and you see your words twisted in a certain way, they made me out to be a horrible person slating the show and I actually wasn’t slating the show at all. I had been talking about how the voting system works, nothing to do with the show. It’s disappointing to see the newspapers doing that. Everyone who knows me knows I’d never say anything like that.

19 It was really an overnight sort of thing. I remember I was actually playing a gig, I play a bit of saxophone as well, and I was playing sax on Brendan O’ Connors Saturday Night Show and that’s when Britain’s Got Talentwas being shown.I was in RTÉ and I met a bit of the old cast and I hadn’t been in the studio in a while.I was sitting down and we were watching the screen and I said to everyone “I’m going to be on this now in a few minutes”and obviously they didn’t believe me. Next of all the audition comes on and straight after that the Twitter followers shot up and Facebook, everyone was calling me and texting me. So really it was over night. I didn’t really have to cope with it because since I was young people had been asking me about Fair Cityand I was used to that sort of environment. So really it was ok for me it wasn’t as bad as it would be for a lot of other people and certainly not as hard.

Do you still get people approaching you? Ryan is known for reaching the final of the sixth series of Britain's Got Talent in May 2012, finishing in fifth place. His audition has over sixteen million views on YouTube and No Name, which he sang during the audition process, landed the Dublin native an Irish number one in the charts. We caught up with Ryan and Graciano Major at the filming of the music video for their brand new single You And Me.

So Ryan where did the idea of doing the song come from? Well basically I met Graciano out one night and we were having a little bit of a sing song and I took his number. I gave him a shout and wondered if he wanted to write a song with me because I like the sound of his voice and then we wrote a song and it was supposed to be for him and he asked me to feature on it. Of course I said “Yeah I may as well sing in my little vocal” and then it all sort of came together.

So you are finishing up today the filming of the music video, what’s next? For me I’m just writing my next album, that’s my main thing. I have a nice little studio at home and I’m trying to record it all myself I want to do everything real independent this time, so it’s all my sound and it all comes straight from me. It’s all going well I’m just waiting until I have about 15 tracks and then I can pick and choose. So hopefully by the end of this summer I will have another album out.

Are you based in Ireland now? I’m based back home yeah. I’ve been over to England at times recording but for now I’m at home.

In such a short space of time you have done so well Ryan, where would you like to end up, what’s the dream? I have never really looked too far ahead, it’s always been just play it by ear and if I’m happy doing something then I’m happy. Once it doesn’t come to the stage where I’m not enjoying it any more, I just want to keep enjoying it like I am at the moment.

It completely depends. Any time I’m on a plane and flying somewhere, it’s always the same, you get people sitting in beside you having a chat, but that’s lovely. I love that people have an interest.

Why Britain’s Got Talent? Being Irish were you slightly dubious about it? My mates actually put me in for it and I went up to Belfast for the audition. I was saying to them on the way up“Lads I don’t know if I’m allowed do this. Do I need a British passport to audition or what?”So we said we would try it out anyway and we went in and I never mentioned anything about not being English or whatever and I was grand, it worked out ok. I was afraid a lot of people back home would be saying I sold out because I went to an English show and stuff but no, it turned out great. It gave me the exposure I needed.

Having been on Britain’s Got Talent, we all want to know what is Simon Cowell like? I get this question a lot.To be honest I don’t really know what he is like because to me he just seemed like a normal guy.I had a chat with him in the hall one day and we were talking about Amanda Holden’s dog that she brought in with her so it was one of those things where we had a normal chat and then after he was like “Best of luck tonight”.

Everyone now knows you How did you cope with as an artist but there will the instant fame? be some who remember

you from Fair City, what is it like venturing from acting to singing?

When did you hit the scene Graciano?

Yeah I played Mark Halpin in Fair City for years, even when I was on set though I was always in the dressing rooms at RTÉ strumming away at the guitar like and singing. I miss the banter onset and the people but singing for me was always number one.

After that I started performing little gigs here and there and got a good response from people. But if I was to put a year on when I got serious it would have been 2012.

Last year. I started at a young age. I use to be a rapper before I became a singer, I was influenced by the urban scene and started rapping when I was around 15 or 16 then moved onto the singing.

Are you also based here?

After your audition and song which was based on a girl you liked did you ever get So after this single the girl in the end? release where do you go?

I am, I’m from Swords. My father is originally from Germany but I was raised in Poland until I was eight. Then I moved to Ireland when I was eight. I lived here till I was 13 or 14 then I went to England and lived with my brother for two years then after that I just came back home here to Ireland. So I have been everywhere.

Nope I never did.

Also on set was the mastermind behind the song Graciano Major, the Irish singer met up with Ryan last year and has since then been recording a number of songs.

What is this song about? The song You And Me is basically about a relationship and what a man or a woman goes through. As we all know relationships are very hard to understand and people go through so many different problems, things happen that you don’t expect. So the song reflects this and tells of two people with different feelings on their relationship. The guy wants to leave her but at the same time he doesn’t so he is willing to change but then the girl doesn’t want him so he then decided to write a song for her and it’s called You And Me.

Hopefully with the grace of God this does great. I don’t want a number one,I just want to be in the Top 10.After this single though I am realising an EP with five tracks. It’s called Fresh Sound and it’s five different genres and that’s coming out at the end of June. I think it has something to cover everyone’s taste. It will be a whole new side to me too because I love dance and choreographing. Overall the feedback from the public so far has been very positive and hopefully I will get into the charts.

Who is your biggest influence? I love Craig David. He is classic RnB. He was the first to bring out the style and was so original. I’m a huge fan, he lives in LA at the moment and I heard he has a new album out which is great. I would love to see him live because he really does inspire me. He would be the only artist that I can honestly say does inspire me. I like all different types of artists from old school to the new stuff but I just love the way Craig David controls his voice.

Hi Everyone,

those who attended seemed to have enjoyed the event and hopefully they picked up some tips.

Welcome to the latest edition of Sq. magazine. I hope you all like the new design of the magazine, the designers at InTallaght work really hard to keep the design fresh and up to date and I think you will agree they are doing a great job.

As you can see from the signage around the centre, work is under way on the new Skechers and Hairspray units and we should have more news about opening dates in our next edition.

Plaudits must also go to Shamrock Rovers who have qualified for the Setanta Cup Final after their last gasp equalizer against Cork and now face Drogheda United in the decider in Tallaght Stadium on May 11th. As usual the West Car Park will be open for match goers on matchday so why not come early and do a bit of shopping in the Centre before the big game or grab a bite to eat before or after? I’m looking forward to seeing the trophy in the Centre and am sure Hoopeman will be keen to show it off. Our Community Champion award has been given to the very deserving Melissa Luttrell who,by organising a fundraising gig in aid of Aware and Teenline, is helping to raise awareness about bullying. If you know of any individual or group who deserve future awards do not hesitate to let us know. IsaDora Masterclass By Rachel Lynch

IsaDora Masterclass in Centre Mall withInternational Makeup Artist Stephan Øien The Square was full of excitement last week with the arrival of IsaDora international makeup artist Stephan Ulvund Øien who hosted master classes in the centre mall.Stephan is the head makeup artist for IsaDora and he showcased a quite natural and day to day makeup look that would suit anyone. Tallaght was his first destination with him also heading to Blanchardstown, Limerick and Rushmere North of the country.

I caught up with the main man himself after the event and he told me he was delighted to be in Ireland. I also got a few tips from him myself, as he explained many of the common mistakes people make while applying their own makeup. “People don’t soften their eyeshades. I would always advise people to apply soft colours first and then build up”.One of his biggest don’ts for the Irish was:“For winter time don’t use bronzer, because the light outside is cold and you would be better using something of a similar colour to your own skin, just a little darker,so shade with powder instead”. Stephan has worked with some pretty big names in the celebrity world. “The biggest known celebrity I have worked with is Kanye West. His crew asked for makeup for one of his shows in Norway, so I did the makeup on his dancers”.

Stephan demonstrated how to apply a number of IsaDora’s brands correctly. Brand manager for Isadora Pauline Lynch was delighted to have Stephan over here for his master class.“Stephan is amazing. He is also the head makeup artist for the Eurovision song contest this year, and Isadora is the national sponsor of the Eurovision too which is great”.

The most important question of the day had to be what is the best type of colours to suit most Irish complexions?

Stephan took short intervals from working on his model onstage to interact with the members of the public who were eager to find out tips on how to highlight their particular features and of course the dos and don’ts of makeup application.

For all your beauty needs and for one to one consultations head down to the girls at Isadora who will help you find the perfect look just for you.Whether it’s a night on the town or just a day to day look the ladies are on hand to help. With the fantastic pricing of Isadoras products there is certainly something to fit everyone budget. They are located in Debenhams on Level 1.

He personally believes “Light touch concealer number 81, rose base is perfect for Irish people, and then I think everything that is in that line of foundations in particular with a rosey tone is perfect for Irish skin tone”

24 SQ. News Our Newest Community Champion The latest recipient of The Community Champion Award is 17-year-old Mellissa Luttrell from Jobstown. Melissa, who is a Leaving Cert student at Mount Seskin College, came up with an idea to stage a concert to raise public awareness of teen bullying after learning of the tragic suicides of the two Gallagher sisters in Donegal, one of which is believed to have been linked to bullying.

Creative Campus: Vestige Exhibition Creative Campus is a site-specific arts programme supporting NCAD students as emerging artists in the creation of art that engages with diverse audiences. The project also engages second level students from schools throughout South Dublin County as part of the NCAD Access programme.

Having been a victim of bullying herself Melissa feels great empathy for other teens also going through similar difficulties. With help from her close friend and fellow Tallaght girl Catelyn Conlon she started putting the word around about her plans to create an event to highlight the problem.Other friends came forward and offered help and it was decided to donate all money raised to Aware and Teenline. The concert takes place on Saturday May 11th in Jobstown Community Centre and Melissa’s father Mark Luttrell says a great night of music is in store. “Acts appearing on the night include Ray Scully from The Voice of Ireland, Kenneth Usher from Britain's got talent, Robby Dingle, Luke Clerkin plus a host of others. If there are any local bands who would like to come and join Melissa they can contact me on 087 362 4983. “Tickets are available from Jobstown Community Centre and also from Melissa at Mount Seskin Collage and Catlyn at St Thomas' senior school.”

Deansrath Community College, Firhouse Community College, Colaiste Brid Presentation School, Moyle Park College and Mount Seskin Community College were all involved in this exhibition along with artists Dzifa Hollwey,Fiona Campbell,Rob Carroll,Stephen Considine, Cameron Ridyard, Louis Deacy, Edel Fenelon, Kieran Bollard, Siobhan Fitzsimons and Emily Veale.Creative Campus is managed and curated by artists Chloe Brenan and Siobhan Carroll. Throughout their three month artistic residency NCAD students have been addressing the themes of ‘materiality’and‘obsolescence’in relation to South Dublin County’s industrial past. The students have considered the closures of the paper making mills that were once located along the rivers Dodder and Camac. Creative Campus Curators Chloe Brenan & Siobhan Carroll

The Creative Campus on Level 3 was abuzz on the evening of Friday April 26 for the opening reception of the space’s first full exhibition, Vestige. Fiona Campbell and Emily Veale, two of the young artists involved, explained the stories behind many of the pieces on display, and how delighted they were at the overall success of the event. Fiona told us how enjoyable the whole process has been “It all came together quite quickly. It’s amazing how this empty space came filled up in just two weeks, because it was just so chaotic trying to place everything correctly but it all eventually fell into place”. Emily added how they have been kept on their toes“We have been kept busy, especially with participating schools coming down with a number of students, overall we are all really happy with it and how it turned out”.

30 Cinema The Hangover Part III By Rachel Lynch

It’s hard to believe that it has only been 4 years since we were introduced to one of the greatest comedies of all time The Hangover was a worldwide success and was about the troubles that awaited a gang of very different friends the next morning after a night of madness. We quickly fell in love with the goofy bunch of troublemakers and wanted more. Director Todd Phillips and company obliged in 2011 with The Hangover Part II, which went on to become an even bigger hit, despite mostly negative reviews. Now, after being hungover twice before, the boys are back in The Hangover Part III and it looks like they still haven’t learned their lesson. When I first heard there was to be a third final edition to the franchise my mind boggled as to how Philips would approach this one.I mean we have already had a wedding and a bachelor party that all went disastrously wrong, what sort of mischief could they find themselves in again? The movie begins with us finding out that Alan's Dad has just died and he's off his meds, which causes him to dig his father's grave in the cemetery himself. His friends intervene and encourage him to take time out at a medical facility called New Horizons, and while en route, the Wolf Pack is run off the road by John Goodman’s character, who demands they track down Leslie Chow, who somehow managed to steal $21 million from him. The fact that Goodman takes Doug (the character who never gets to participate in any of the fun in these movies) as his hostage makes for one of the funniest jokes in a trailer that emphasizes danger and even despair more than comedy. From there, the gang is off to Tijuana, where they find Chow indulging in cockfighting. This new adventure will apparently make for better psychotherapy for Alan than what any hospital could provide, as he suddenly comes to existential realisations such as "We can't be friends any more, when we get together bad things happen and

people get hurt." Chow, ever the walking, babbling lack of the series moral center, responds with, "Yeah, that's the point it's funny!" Heather Graham, reprises her role as Jade, and Bridesmaids funny woman Melissa McCarthy plays the owner of a pawn shop who insults her mother in front of customers. Overall the movie is as funny as you would expect but I’m glad Philips has called time on the franchise. In my opinion nothing was ever going to top the first film but both the Hangover IIand the Hangover IIIhave been excellent. I’m happy this time round to see the group resolve this one, and it’s almost as though the makers have realized that we the audience don’t need to see the exact same film as the two previous. We all love to watch them deal with terrible things and in this final installment I believe the cast have been given a lot more freedom, and it seems as though the writers have taken advantage of that freedom too.

32 King of The Travellers By Padraig Conlon

King of the Travellers comes flying out of the traps with a hotly contested sulky race that sees the winner gunned down in a hail of bullets It turns out it’s all part of a flash back for John Paul Moorhouse (John Connors) as he remembers the murder of his father by the rival Power family when he was just a little boy. Ten years on and his Uncle Francis (Michael Collins) has taken control of a family still eager to set things right. When the Powers move in to camp near the Moorehouse halting site, the old feuds rise to the surface again. Against the wishes of both families, John Paul looks to restart a youthful romance with Winnie Powers (McGlynn), the daughter of the head of the Powers. When the unstable Mickey The BagsMoorehouse (Peter Coonan) makes enemies in the local settled community, it brings further trouble that the clan can do with out. This is director Mark O’Connor’s follow up to 2010 gangster film Between The Canalsand here he shoots for the stars by evoking such classics as The Godfather,Romeo And Juliet and On The Waterfront. The opening ten minutes of the movie draw you in with brilliant editing and set the scene for the epic story about to unfold.

The vast majority of the cast is made up of members of the Travelling Community and John Connors in the lead role does an excellent job.Love/Hate’s Peter Coonan brings his usual high energy to his role as Mickey The Bags and it’s him who provides most of the comedy moments in the film. The hallucinogenic horse ride through the forest in the first half of the film is a particular highlight. Whether the movie’s focus on fighting and violence reinforces negative stereotypes about the Travelling Community is probably a debate for another day. It’s worth noting that some of the truly horrific deeds in the film are committed by the settled people. There are a lot of good moments in the film and I think the first half is excellent but I just felt the rest of the movie was missing something. I think director O’Connor has done a wonderful job and this film should mark him out as another talented Irish director to keep an eye on. The soundtrack is stunning and the movie is really well shot but I do think the script lets it down a bit in the end.

Fast & Furious 6 By Rachel Lynch

All roads lead to this After the events of Fast Five, professional criminal Dominic Toretto and his crew are wealthy, but their criminal records prevent them from returning to their home country. Following his attempts to apprehend them, Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agent Luke Hobbs is forced to offer the crew a deal, he will give them all full pardons for their crimes if they will help him take down a lethally skilled mercenary organization led by a criminal mastermind and his ruthless second-incommand, Dominic's thought dead lover Letty Ortiz. This new prodution for Justin Lin's Fast and Furious 6 finally uncovers crucial information regarding the resurrection of Letty, who was thought to be dead in 2009's Fast and Furious. Michelle Rodriguez’s character returns only to fight against her former beau Dom, instead of reuniting with him. The franchise as ever is based around the cars but they have really changed it up this year, taking it from underground to various cities around the world. The movie is now more appealing to all movie goers and not just for the lads who based their love for the franchise on the fantastic cars. This new movie carries the same explosive scenes as the original and subsequent others. If you have been a fan from day one you will be well aware that The Fast & Furiousfilms aren’t what anyone would call character driven dramas, but they’ve been pretty consistent about building characterslike Dom through the various installments.Probably the greatest thing about this style of movie is you don’t have to see the previous installments to understand what is going on. Ideally having seen the previous films will be a help but it’s certainly not a necessity.

The Frames release anniversary doc

Our fave Walk On Girls are back!

Well they have been together just over 20 years, so it seems fitting that Oscar winner Glen Hansard's band The Frames mark the occasion by making a documentary of their anniversary tour.

It’s that time of year again when the Premier League Darts returns and with the focus not just being on the big names like Phil Taylor and Michael Van Gerwan but our very own walk on girls Hazel O’Sullivan and Kelly Donegan.

However, director Conor Masterson has revealed that the movie actually came to fruition in a roundabout fashion, rather than initially being a definite part of the anniversary celebrations. Filmmaker Conor worked closely with the band over 18 months, beginning on their 20th anniversary tour in 2010.

All eyes will be on the stunning pair who have returned for another exciting year. With a massive sellout on home soil the girls are bound to have a great night.

“The Frames have always been very positive collaborators.I felt this was an opportunity to make a film that could explore their creativity as people and musicians as well as capturing some of their very dynamic and exciting live performances in close up.” Masterson is quoted as saying on www.inthedeepshade.theframes.ie The film is currently showing at selected venues.

Rosanna Davison racy instagram pic Rosanna Davison hasn’t really been in the media much of late. The former Miss World recently got engaged to businessman Wes Quirke and has kept quite a low profile since then. But she certainly caught the attention of many when she uploaded two pics onto her Instagram account this month. Wearing a low-cut swimsuit, and suggestively holding up a banana, Rosanna, 28, joked: “Just an average morning shooting with liliforberg! #Bananas.” The picture provoked debate again online as to whether the glamorous Playboystar has in fact had work done or are her assets her own? She has repeatedly refused to confirm or deny it, instead putting her impressive cleavage down to“Big bras and tight T-shirts it’s an optical illusion”.

Arctic Monkeys, Fatboy Slim and Bjork have all been confirmed to play this 10th edition of Electric Picnic. There's a very strong supporting cast too, with a first Irish performance for the combination of David Byrne & St Vincent. Franz Ferdinand return, as do Eels, The Walkmen, as well as former member of The Smiths, Johnny Marr, in his new solo incarnation. Noah & The Whale, Ocean Colour Scene, Hurts, Mick Flannery, Baauer,Tiga,Warpaint,Savages,The Strypes,Policia,Chvrches, Parquet courts, Clinic, Deap Valley and SOAK are also set to appear in the fields of Stradbally. Electric Picnic 2013

Oxegen set to return but not as we know it Last week the official lineup for Oxegen 2013 was revealed and it seems not everyone is impressed. Still clinging to the tagline ‘Europe’s Greatest Music Festival’, Oxegen is set to return to Punchestown Racecourse over August Bank Holiday Weekend with headliners David Guetta and Calvin Harris. Chase & Status, Example, Snoop Dogg, Labrinth, Alesso, Soulwax and Nero are also high on the bill. In years gone by, going back to it’s predecessor Witness, this festival was a bastion of the biggest brightest acts from abroad in the main genres of Rock, Pop and Dance. This year’s lineup seems to have left Rock and Indie music to festivals like Electric Picnic and Longtitude, choosing to concentrate on the contentious genres of Dance and Electronica. After last year’s Swedish House Mafia fiasco, will the same happen here? While previous Oxegens may have tried to be all things to all men (and women), it will be interesting to see if this narrowing of focus will save the musical behomoth from extinction.

In recognition of the fantastic support and to celebrate the wonderful 9 years EP and its followers have had together, they have announced that they'd like to reward their longstanding fans with the following ticket options. Until Monday May 27, if you can prove you've been to 3 or more previous EPs, your weekend ticket will cost only €149.50. If you can prove you've been to the Picnic once before, it will cost €169.50. If you're an Electric Picnic virgin, it will cost €189.50. Ticketmaster should be able to help provide fans with proof. Between Tuesday May 27 and Sunday July 28, all weekend tickets will be €189.50. After Sunday July 28, the price will increase to €229.50. If you only want to go down for the Sunday, the day ticket is €85.00.

36 Music The Conversation

Slip Stooshe By Rachel Lynch

Texas By Rachel Lynch

The Stooshe girls are back on our radar this month with the release of their new single and also a new upcoming album. For those not who may not be familiar with the band they are a three piece girl group who got together in 2011. It wasn’t until the release of Black Heart in 2012 when the girls really shot to fame. The song landed them the number three spot in the charts and they have since been working on their album London With The Lights On which is due to be released on May 27. Their latest single Slip will also appear on their album, and will certainly be another big hit for these ladies. It's produced by Future Cut, makers of other great songs including Little Mix's DNA,the majority of Lily Allen's back catalogue and their own single Black Heart.

Scottish pop band celebrate their 25th anniversary this year What better way to mark this momentous event than with a new album! The Conversationis the band’s eighth record and comes eight years after their last effort. It was recorded primarily in Richard Hawley’s Sheffield studio, with other tracks done in London and Glasgow. It has been long overdue for all their faithful fans and Texas are confidently reintroducing the band’s style, sound, and image. The tracks were written, produced and performed by singer/guitarist Sharleen Spiteri and bassist Johnny McElhone. It also features collaborations with singer songwriter Richard Hawley and Bernard Butler. It consists of 12 tracks plus a bonus track. The first track on the album named The Conversation was a song which pleasantly surprised me.The revival of their country style sound isn’t something many would have expected but it’s a good move. Front woman Sharleen Spiteri’s distinctive vocals can be recognized from a mile off and she’s managed to retain her talent for writing memorable choruses that stick in your head. This will certainly be a track on repeat. Dry Your Eyes is next up and to be fair I had initially viewed this track being performed live online, and I didn’t really like it. After another listen or two the song has grown on me. Credit must be given to both Sharleen Spiteri and Tony McGovern on their amazing vocals on this one.Honestly

the song isn’t the greatest on this album but the vocals are enough to make you listen again and again. Detroit City sees Sharleen belt out some unbelievable notes. We all know their leading lady has an outstanding voice but this fast upbeat melody silences all the doubters if there were any left out there. Probably my favorite track on the album would have to be Talk About Love.Don’t be fooled by the title.Although it seems to be a slow moving track it’s quite the opposite. This is simply Sharleen and the band getting down to basics with some nicely raw guitar lines embellished with a little swampy back beat before unleashing its sharply hooked sing along chorus. Track number 11, Hearts Are Made To Stray is another song that initially may not take your fancy, but like Dry Your Eyesis saved by the vocals.Sharleen proves that not all songs necessarily need to be well written or even remotely interesting, as once she starts singing she automatically has the listener interested to the point where you almost give the song another chance to be good. Texas fans will no doubt love this new album, especially having had to wait so long for it. The 25th Anniversary too will be a huge selling point for the band. With all the 90s nostalgia and reformations happening, maybe Texas will find a new niche market and possibly even a few more fans. The most important thing that stood out to me was that the band has taken up where they left off. They haven’t succumbed to the pressures of modern day music and have stuck to their original and unique style that they are known and loved for, something that will keep their long standing fans happy.

Fans of Stooshe will automatically associate the song with the group as their usual flair and originality is apparent from the get go.The song has a similar Motown inspired sound to it, just like Black Heart, but it's not a ballad. Also like Black Heart, it sounds like the sort of song that radio stations will continue to play months after its release. The song is about a man who has become a bit too comfortable in a relationship and has forgotten how to be romantic. This is best summed in the line:“You used to cheer me up and now I'm tearier than ten babies.” The retro styled song is a blend of pop and R&B with a sassy 60s girl pop twist which is a style that we have already become accustomed to from Stooshe. The music video is also a treat with fashion and colour the big focus. All three girls have a fantastic sense of style that is clearly a reflection of their bubbly personalities. There is nothing majorly glamorous about the setting of the video, as it is all filmed at a bowling ally but this simplicity works really well with the flow of the song, and I can assure you bowling has never looked so glam!

UPC Horizon UPC HAS SOMETHING REVOLUTIONARY ONTHE

HORIZON

Competition between UPC Ireland and Sky Ireland has stepped up another notch, following UPC’s launch of the Horizon television website and app “The service, which allows customers of its broadband and television bundles to access television content on other devices, offers access to channels that represent a much greater share of peak-time viewership than the equivalent Sky Go app”,UPC sales and marketing director Mark Coan said.“The entry-level UPC pack has three times as manychannels on the Horizon app as the entrylevel Sky pack does on Sky Go”,he added. The Horizon app has a total of 45 channels, including Sky News and Sky Sports News, for customers of UPC’s higher-priced packages.“That’s the richest bouquet of channels in the Irish market that is available on multiple devices,” Mr Coan said.

“The strategy is not just to be a little bit better than the other guys, the strategy is to be way better than the other guys.” The two rivals’ apps are not quite the same. The main difference between them is that with the exception of pre-downloaded movie rentals, Horizon’s content can be accessed only on devices in the home, while the channels available on Sky Go can be streamed on the move.Sky has 22 live channels plus a further 11 movie channels and six sports channels on the Sky Go app.The Sky Go Extra app, which costs €6 a month, also allows users to pre-download and store a broader range of on-demand content. Exclusive channels on the Sky service include Sky Atlantic.Sky Ireland, which is currently spending €10 million on a marketing campaign for its new broadband products, has much slower broadband speeds than market leader UPC, which has invested €500 million in its fibre network. Sky’s entry into the broadband market in February still managed to spark an element of price competition between the two companies, however, with UPC mimicking Sky by introducing a lower-priced “triple-play” bundle for “light users” of broadband and reducing the cost of its unlimited product. The Horizon app is available only on devices that run on Apple’s iOS operating software for now,but an Android version will be introduced in the summer. Sky Go is already available on certain Android devices.Meanwhile, the Horizon app and website give UPC customers the power to manage recordings to their digital video recorder boxes while on the move, a

facility that is already available to Sky customers.“There have been almost 180,000 iOS downloads of the Sky+ app to date”,Sky Ireland said recently. UPC will launch its full Horizon television platform in Ireland later this year, claiming the set-top box for the service “revolutionises television viewing”. Mr Coan described the introduction of the Horizon website and app as “a roadmap to innovation” by the company. You will need to use your My UPC account to enjoy the full benefits of the Horizon TV App service. Horizon has already been launched by UPC in the Netherlands so we know some details about it. It is basically a service that will allow you to sync content from your set top box across different devices. It is not a new idea but it is certainly something that will be welcomed by many. Being able to continue watching your recordings on a mobile device is a pretty handy feature indeed.

40 Game By Cathal Jennings

Injustice: Gods Among Us

When it comes to superheroes-turnedstreet fighters, DC Comics' stable of superfriends have always received the short end of the stick otherwise, he takes damage proportional to what his opponent spent. Clashes can be used only once per round, per character, and only if the initiator is down to his second health bar. The threat of a clash adds an interesting dynamic to the back half of a fight. It forces you to constantly reevaluate how much meter to save and spend based on what your opponent has stored.

While Marvel enjoys the steady success of Capcom's legendary Vs.series, the likes of Justice League Task Force and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe have not done DC any favors. Injustice: Gods Among Us, the latest fighter from the house of Mortal Kombat, aims to break this combo with a fighting system that builds upon the lessons of MK, while also introducing a few new tricks. But for all its complexities, Injustice unfortunately falls short when compared to its contemporaries. If you are familiar with Mortal Kombat, you will feel right at home in Injustice. Character movement has that same deliberate, staccato style that's distinct from the fighting genre's Japanese-developed counterparts. That style feeds into the satisfying weight and brutality of each attack, whether it's Bane breaking you over his knee or Hawkgirl taking her mace to your face.Controlling these characters feels powerful, and the destruction you bring upon your opponent and the environment add excitement to each fight.

Some use these objects as weapons to be smashed over an opponent's head, while others use them as springboards to quickly navigate the arena. These items are a fun way to augment your fighter's arsenal and take stage awareness to a new extreme.

While MKand Injusticehave a similar feel, their underlying mechanics are very different. Injustice has three attack buttons and a special trait button. Whether it's flight, healing,or a simple strength boost, these traits are unique to each fighter and play into their particular abilities and histories. The distinctions are clearly apparent, and don't just boil down to slightly altered punches and kicks.

Knowing that a combo could put your opponent near a deadly item might make you think twice before launching your assault. A stone tablet that Batman can spring off of to reach the other side of the screen, Superman just smashes. Superman--along with the game's other heavyweights--smashes almost everything he touches.

Clashes are another interesting mechanic. When activated, they instantly interrupt a combo, and then both players secretly spend an amount of their super meter.If the fighter who initiated the clash spends more, he regains health proportional to the amount spent;

In some stages,it is too easy to smash all of the interactive objects early on simply to deny your opponent their functions. This is especially troublesome for characters with limited mobility options who need these items to compensate for their shortcomings.

While clashes are only a two-time threat, Injustice's interactive backgrounds are a constant hazard.Peppered throughout each stage are items--a missile here, a motorcycle there--for characters to use. Different characters use these items in different ways.

12 Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14

Tiger’s annual golfing giant is better than ever This is the sixteenth game in the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series and golf hasn’t changed an awful lot in that time. There aren’t a whole lot of new features and if you are expecting a complete new golfing experience think again. The Tiger Woods games are limited by the game of golf itself surprisingly, so new ideas must be hard to come by except for adding some new players and making the already existing players a little better. There has been a new addition called‘Golfer types’which allows you to choose between power, control and draw specialists in hitting the ball high. It’s not a bad addition but not really needed and doesn’t really add anything to the game. Playing online is where the new Tiger Woods really justifies a sequel. Online tournaments have golfers playing the course at the same time you are, and you can see their shots in real time. It adds a competitive nature to the online play trying to beat your opponents. An overall leader board tracks the leading golfer for that particular tournament which last around 24 hours then a winner is declared.Seeing live play alongside you while you make your way around the course is quite enjoyable and entertaining to see other players skill level. You can also set up ‘Country Clubs’ which is a nice way of keeping track of rivalry with friends, and if you have people on your Friends List who are working through the game,it’s another brilliant addition to the online side of the game. Single player mode is much the same with some new players, new courses and night golf which was surprising because I thought one of the big things about golf was that it had to be played during the day. One new mode really stands out Legends Of The Majors takes you through the storied history of golf

tournaments, starting from 1873 as you play your way to the modern era. This throwback feature is brilliant, EA have made it really detailed from the courses down to the clothes the golfers wear. The new game isn’t a major success, not much has changed and only a few new featues have been added. The online gameplay is very good and the most entertaining part of the game.Single player mode hasn’t changed just a few new golfers and new courses but nothing major. The Tiger Woods franchise took a big hit but I think the games have maybe run their course and unless major changes are made to the next sequel I can’t imagine too many people rushing to buy it.

Ford Kuga

I headed down to Tallaght Ford on Airton Road this week to test drive the new Ford Kuga Having already read plenty of reviews I was excited to take it out on the road and see would it live up to the high praise it has received online. Upon first glance you cannot fault the car in the slightest. “Visual Premium-ness”that’s how Joel Piaskowski,Ford’s new Design Director for America summed up the all new Kuga. Supporting that strong design at the front is the hallmark Ford grille, with large cool air intakes and prominent sculpturing of the bonnet. The side view sees muscly wheel arches and further character lines while the rear tailgate is very nicely shaped. As I got inside the car I was just as impressed. The cabin’s new front seat design is the main change. The boot gets up to an extra 200 litres of space, depending on how the rear setback angle is set. The driving position is, as ever, excellent. It has a very stylish cockpit for driver and front passengers. Attention to detail sets the Kuga apart. The comfortable contoured sports seats and soft touch

KUGA TOWN surfaces and an aesthetically designed centre console enhance the luxurious feel. Taking off in the car was simple, the Ford KeyFree System lets you lock and unlock the Kuga, without having to take your key out of your pocket or bag. Once inside the car, there’s still no need to use your key.Simply push the Ford Power Starter Button while holding the clutch down. The ride itself was pretty amazing. Having never driven an SUV style car before I was really impressed.Even though the car felt quite big, it really was simple and easy to navigate on the roads. What stood out to me most had to be the power of the Kuga, quick and smooth. Another focal point and one in which I have never seen before was the hands-free tailgate. This is really helpful if you have your hands full of shopping. Simply wave your foot under the rear bumper of the car and the tailgate will automatically open or close.

The Kuga is available in both Zetec and Titanium. The all new Kuga is has a 2.0 TDCi Duratorq engine, with 140PS or 163PS, 6-Speed Manual or Powershift transmission. Both engines deliver plenty of power even in off-road conditions.

Kuga is a spacious, capable machine. It sits in a niche, but highly competitive sector which features great machines like the Honda CRV, Hyundai Santa Fe and the Mazda CX-5, to name a few, but I must say I feel it comes out on top. This particular model will appeal to all different type of customers, it can as easily cater for a family who want a spacious car or someone completely different who wants an eye catching stylish design.

Overall The Ford Kuga is one car I would recommend to anyone. As I said having never driven a car of its size before I was quite interested to see how I would manage but I must say with the easy steering and high positioning of your seat you actually feel like you are a lot safer in a car of its size and in command of the road.

I loved the look of the Kuga, the practicality and obviously the drive. Packed full of many more innovative features, the Kuga takes SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) styling and technology to a whole new level.

The system uses two sensors under the rear bumper that recognise when your foot breaks their electric field. A signal is then sent to your vehicle requesting the tailgate to open or close. This system will only work when you have your KeyFree key-fob with you.

Twitter has unleashed a new feature called keyword targeting that will give advertisers the ability to show users ads based on the content of their tweets. The new advertising feature, which Twitter is terming 'keyword targeting in timelines', is now available in all languages and markets where Twitter Ads are supported.

The key selection criteria included: 1. Generally - which of the companies have produced or are developing an idea or a technology, which could be considered for an early stage company to be excellent? 2. Specifically - of the companies which have achieved the generally required level of excellence, which is the most likely to gain investment and commercially succeed?

Here’s how Twitter describes the way it will work: “For example:let’s say a user tweets about enjoying the latest album from their favorite band, and it so happens that band is due to play a concert at a local venue. That venue could now run a geotargeted campaign using keywords for that band with a Tweet containing a link to buy the tickets. That way, the user who tweeted about the new album may soon see that Promoted Tweet in their timeline letting them know tickets are for sale in their area.”

Responding after his prize was awarded Michael Flanagan said he “greatly appreciated the opportunity to access the professional services from a specialised law firm such as Philip Lee’. It is certainly a weight off my shoulders to have access to this level of legal support as I seek to secure investor funds which will be my key focus in the months ahead,’’ he continued.

In a blog post,Twitter product manager Nipoon Malhotra said the new feature would allow advertisers to reach users based on the keywords that they have used in recent tweets. Advertisers will also be able to target users based on tweets they have recently retweeted, engaged with or favourited, for instance.

Also speaking at the event was Synergy Centre Manager Tom Rooney who outlined the importance of the INVESTSTART prize “This professional legal support is a fantastic prize for participants as they press ahead in their efforts to sign up investors, add employees and protect their IP. We appreciate Philip Lee & Company’s continued support to New Frontiers at Synergy Centre, ITT Dublin.” The Synergy Centre is an innovation centre providing a package of supports to early-stage enterprises. Its aim is to enable industry and academia to interact to create viable enterprises for South Dublin County that will secure the area’s future in terms of job creation, innovation and export potential.

50 jobs as LogMeIn sets up in Dublin US group, LogMeIn, which provides remote log-in services, data back-up and file sharing, is to set up a European centre in Dublin, creating 50 new jobs. Its chief executive Jim Kelliher said Ireland was an attractive place for his company to locate due to the talent pool available, "strong university system", "strong infrastructure", a "pro-business environment", and "easy expat relocation". "It's relatively easy to put kids from Boston into Ireland. It's really easy for our people to fit into that environment."

New keyword targeting feature released on Twitter

Mr Kelliher was speaking at the Ireland Gateway to Europe 2013 event at the World Trade Centre. This was part of a four-city trade mission to the US by 40 Irish business executives and professional services advisors. It was the second year this event has been organised.

"This is an important new capability – especially for those advertisers looking for signals of intent – because it lets marketers reach users at the right moment, in the right context," wrote Malhotra. He was keen to point out that the new feature shouldn't change the experience for the user, however. "We're not showing ads more frequently in timelines, and users can still dismiss promoted tweets they don't find relevant," Malhotra wrote. Twitter has tested the new ad platform with a group of advertisers and agencies, including Walgreen and Everything Everywhere. According to Malhotra, users were "significantly more likely" to engage with promoted tweets using keyword targeting in their timelines than other forms of targeting in their timelines. But words in a tweet and words in a search query are two very different things. Searches are much more likely to be purposeful, to contain an indication of intent to purchase–often enough right away. Twitter no doubt has tested this out and feels confident that there’s enough intent in certain keywords within tweets, or it wouldn’t have offered the capability. For now, Twitter will be battling the likes of television and Facebook for brandoriented ad revenue. There may also be an issue with privacy with this new feature. If it annoys some users to get “retargeted”with ads based on what websites they’ve visited getting an ad for Gaviscon when you’ve tweeted that you just ate too much no doubt will be worse! Experts say that marketers will have to see solid results in either intent to buy or in sales driven directly from the ad before they move big budgets toward Twitter.

New survey reveals Irish firms are now focused on growth Irish businesses are setting their sights on growth, according to the six-monthly business confidence report from Regus, the global workplace provider. Over half of firms in Ireland (56%) plan to increase headcount by at least 2% of their workforce in the remainder of 2013. Furthermore, this eighth edition of the report reveals that Irish business confidence has rallied over the last six months, rising 17 points to 102 on the Index, its most buoyant standing for two years. Over the last six months 43% of firms report an increase in profits, compared with just 25% six months ago. Over one in ten firms (13%) believe that economic recovery in Ireland is already advancing strongly. Almost half of firms (48%) state that their recruitment drive will focus on operational staff and just under two fifths (38%)

intend to hire sales and marketing staff, indicating a determination to sell their way out of the downturn. Olivier de Lavalette, Regional Vice President for Ireland at Regus comments: "This latest edition of the Business Confidence Index shows some hugely positive signs for Ireland's economy.Businesses are finally experiencing growth after the protracted downturn. “Managing this stage of recovery is crucial, as it carries the huge risk that firms will overextend themselves. Indeed one of the major causes of financial distress in previous downturns was property, with 52%of firms having their fingers burnt by expensive and lengthy leases. The stand out figures are not just that firms are looking to recruit but that their plan is to invest in sales and marketing, this shows that companies feel it's the right time to go out there and sell." "This time round, companies are far better equipped due to the availability and acceptance in the business world of flexible working, especially in terms of physical workspace. Full-time,permanent office space is no longer the only option. Keeping overheads low and remaining agile are vital to making recruitment affordable and achieving sustainable business growth."

AmazonTV experiment posts 14 shows Amazon.com's experiment with original video production took a big step forward today as the company posted 14 pilot TV shows on the Internet for free viewing. Amazon, the world's largest Internet retailer, has been filming pilots in recent months for comedy and kids TV shows such as Alpha House, Betas and Teeny Tiny Dogs. The company posted them all on the Amazon Instant Video section of its website to get feedback on which shows viewers like best. The pilots can also be watched on Amazon Instant Video apps through other web-connected devices like Roku, Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's Wii. Based on viewers' reactions and reviews, the Amazon Studios production company will decide which projects

to make into full TV series to be shown on Prime Instant Video,Amazon's subscription-based online video service. Amazon and other technology companies are trying to transform Hollywood by delivering TV shows and movies over the Internet, rather than through traditional channels such as cable and satellite services. Like Netflix, Amazon has decided that it must movebeyond being a distributor of others' shows to producing quality programming of its own.

Your eyes blazed with contempt When you spoke of our dissimilar worlds You were raised with the cruel lies of history That cut and shaped the very walls of our unequal places And even though we are told that our fingers are uneven We know how the thumb became sleek by greed and how My brawn grew your coffee and gathered your cocoa The bitterness in your face time and again tells me How I am not a son of the soil. Now tell me If my blood is crimson and yours sapphire-toned Or if we shall not go down the same final way That transition’s gulf that shall bring us Into the earth’s waiting embrace Sheath your blade of scorn that has ripped my soul apart, Else I’d recall like a devotee counting prayer beads The thousand times you have stalked my plagued paths And how your falsehoods have torn my heart apart Like a blade cutting through butter I saw you sunbathing in Brittas Bay Your eyes told me what a trespasser I was In your world of golden suns And though I brought companionship All I saw was a hostile wall of separation

Winning Entry Of The European Week Against Racism Competition As we mentioned in our Late February edition, to mark European Week against Racism, which took place between March 16 and 24, the Social Inclusion Unit hosted a competition which aimed to combat racism and to celebrate cultural diversity of people living in Ireland today. The idea behind this competition was to ask children, young people and adults living here in South Dublin County to convey their own personal message against racism. There were over 150 entries for the competition from the public, primary schools and secondary schools. Maria Finn, Social Inclusion Officer for South Dublin told InTallaght:“The number of entries we receive from the competition shows that people living in South Dublin believe that is no place for racism here. “Here in South Dublin County we want to continue developing an inclusive county where everybody has the opportunity to participate and realise their true potential” We are delighted to be able to share the winning entry with you, written by Theophilus Ejorh.

I want you to know this, that I’ve come to drink From the fountain of the Emerald Isle Not minding the weight of your bitterness and shameful lies, Or the many stones that repeatedly hurtled onto my window. Ghost Light ByJoseph O’Connor

A life remembered with all its ghosts We reported in our last edition about Dublin's One City One Book initiative and it occurred to me that maybe I should read James Plunkett's Strumpet City for my next review. In case you missed our original news piece, Dublin: One City, One Book is an award-winning Dublin City Council initiative, led by Dublin City Public Libraries, which encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year.I didn't get around to it in time but the book I read instead turns out to be 2011's One City One Book choice. I think great literature dates better than most popular media so I hope you'll forgive my lateness. It's easy to see why Ghost Light was chosen, as it tells a story that would only have taken place in Dublin in this particular time period. Sections of the story take place in London and America but the two lead characters as it were are both very Irish, though of very different backgrounds. At it's core, the story is about the life of Molly Allgood (whose stage name was Máire O'Neill),from the Dublin's inner city tenements at the start of the last century.Still in her teens, she had an interest in acting and got involved in The Abbeytheatre company. There she meets John Synge, the theatre's leading playwright and finds herself beginning an affair with him. He is a damaged, troubled man and older than Molly, but they embark on a secretive relationship. It's not that Synge is married or anything, but he's the son of a once

prosperous Protestant landowning family and his stern mother would not approve of Molly, a poor Catholic girl, as a match for her son. Despite Synge's success as a playwright it appears he doesn't earn enough to support himself and a wife, so he must play by his God-fearing mother's rules in order for her to support him financially. The other snag in their love affair is that Synge is already ill, with a serious chest complaint that will kill him before we are too far into the book. The book is based very loosely on these two real life people but that is where the similarity ends.O'Connor has used his impressive imagination and extrapolated a whole love story between his own versions of Synge and Molly. On his own website Joseph O'Connor speaks about his inspiration for this novel:"My walk home would take me past the old Victorian house where the great writer John Synge and his widowed mother had endured their last years, a house that appears several times in Ghost Light. I’d walk past that house and feel its ghosts gazing out at me, every bit as friendless as I was."The way he tells this beautiful story, with its roots firmly in reality but not afraid to float into the realms of fantasy is what makes this such a wonderful book. The books starts in London, where Molly has ended up as a poor broken old woman. She has had a full life, with two husbands and two children, but she has never fully let go of the memory of 'her tramp',as she affectionately refers to Synge. She is down on her luck and clinging to the last vestiges of civility.

If all this sounds terribly depressing and is putting you off reading the book, please don't be discouraged! It is sad, but at the same time it highlights the good experiences she has had. Moments are immortalised as shining examples of pleasure or just as memorable events in a full and interesting life. It is indeed a story of love’s commitment, of partings and reconciliations, of the courage involved in living on nobody else’s terms. Full of exhilarating language and unforgettable characters, it is a homage to the act of storytelling. It is a marvellous story, absorbingly told and I will be keeping a look out for O'Connor's other novels in the future. About The Author

The narrative starts in the second person, with statements about Molly being directed straight at the reader.I found this very effective in making me feel a deep empathy for her plight. Later on it changes to the more neutral third person and occasionally swaps to the first person. In this way we get a more rounded view of Molly and her plight, whether in the current day when she is old in 1950's London or in her remembrances of the 1910's when she was young and tangled up with Synge. The story seamlessly slips between these time periods, as her memory would have.

Joseph O'Connor is an Irish novelist. He is best known for his 2002 historical novel Star of the Sea. He is also the author of the novels Cowboys and Indians (short-listed for the Whitbread Prize), Desperadoes, The Salesman, Inishowenand Redemption Falls, as well as a number of bestselling works of non-fiction. He has also written film scripts and stage-plays including the award-winning Red Roses and Petrol.

Molly's inner voice is interesting in the language she uses in the different stages of the story. At the start of the novel in 1950's London she speaks very properly,as befits an ageing actress transplanted to England. In her remembrances she speaks as a young uneducated girl would have at the time.Toward the end of the story, she slips back into the colloquialisms of her youth and of her country and even city, in her internal monologue. These changes reflect the many facets of her identity.

Graphic Designer/Bookworm Gwen lives in Terenure and works at InTallaght magazine. She has been an avid reader since childhood and always has at least one book on the go. Email her at gwen@intallaght

There is a transience to each segment of Molly's story, and we can feel how temporary each stage was. From her love affair with Synge, which we know will be cut tragically short by his early death, to the sections that take place in America because we know she doesn't stay there for good. The final part of the story, chronologically at least is nearly the most temporary. There is a real feeling that her current situation cannot continue for much longer, reinforced by the fact that she is obviously nearing the end of her life and her story.

48 Beauty with Skinkandy By Emer McGillion

Hair Removal

Hot wax is used on the face, underarm and bikini. It cools and hardens when it is applied to the skin, and will grip only the hair, so is a lot more comfortable and less aggressive on the skin. It is perfect for sensitive skin and strong hair. Make sure to ask your therapist if they use hot wax for Hollywoods/Brazilians! A must for anyone who wants as pain free a wax as possible. Unfortunately, with waxing, you need to be hairy in order to be smooth! Three to four weeks growth is needed for the wax to adhere properly and to prevent hair from breaking. Over time, the hair follicle can become damaged and this will slow the growth for many people and they get a longer amount of time between waxes.Unlike laser, it doesn't matter what the colour of the hair is. If you are on acne medication or skin thinning products, waxing is not for you. Other than that, once you have a patch test to ensure there are no reactions, anyone is suitable. For anyone wanting to give it a go themselves and try it at home, I would strongly recommend going to a professional, it's not as easy as it looks!

THE BEST WAY TO GET

HAIR-FREE FOR SUMMER? As summer approaches people are starting to brave the exposure of body parts, one thing is certain for most of us...the need for hair removal! Some people are lucky enough to have very light, sparse growth where a quick whip round with a razor sorts them out for a week or so. Others are cursed with dark, strong growth, where you can shave your underarms and still have the appearance of a dark shadow. Shaving just isn't always ideal, particularly for holidays, and can be quite time consuming - if you do it correctly and avoid cutting yourself! The two most popular methods are waxing and laser. A few things to remember before deciding.... Laser Treatment

If you would like more information or advice you can contact me by phone (086 378 3516) or email (info@skinkandy.ie).

Any re-growth is quite slow to reappear and very sparse, which for a lot of people is a life changing experience. You can continue to get laser treatments as needed to further reduce this regrowth. It's important that your expectations are realistic. If you have blonde, red or grey hair, it will not be successful, so don't waste your money! The darker and stronger your hair, the more reduction you will see. Advances in technology means that all skin types/colour can now be treated by a laser. One big advantage of laser treatment,is that you can shave between treatments so you don't have to have re-growth. Laser makes your skin more sensitive to UV light so if you are in the middle of laser treatments and are going to be in the sun, make sure to have the area covered and wear SPF so you don't risk developing pigmentation.

Laser has been becoming more and more popular within the last 10 years and is now widely used in salons and clinics.People want to find a solution to permanent hair removal, and this seems to be it, but only if you’re a suitable candidate!

Many places that offer laser are actually using an IPL machine - Intense Pulsed Light - which technically isn't laser. Lasers are focused beams, whereas IPL uses interspersed flashes. There is a higher risk of burning with IPL and you may not get the same results as with a laser. So do your research before committing to a course.

Laser is a light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair which then carries this energy to the root. It selectively heats the follicle and damages the blood supply, which prevents hair from returning.

Waxing

Laser is permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. A course of 6 treatments is usually recommended, 4 - 6 weeks apart and you can expect to see a reduction of 85% of thehair, if not more.

Waxing has been around for centuries. It removes the hair from the root, and can take between two and six weeks for hair to return.Strip wax is used for larger areas such as legs and arms.Wax is applied in the direction of the hair growth and removed with a strip.

50 Recipe Lamb Rogan Josh

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE Ingredients Serves 4-5 2.2 lb (1 kg) lamb shoulder, cut into bite-size chunks 1 tablespoon coriander seeds 2 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 tablespoon poppy seeds 16 almonds, shelled 3 brown cardamoms, peeled ¼ teaspoon peppercorns 7 cloves 2 tablespoon fresh coconut, grated 5 whole dry red chilies, soaked in ½ cup water for 15 minutes 8 garlic flakes 20 gm ginger generous pinch nutmeg, grated ¼ cup vegetable oil and melted unsalted butter, combined 2 bay leaves 2.5 cm cinnamon stick 8 green cardamoms, slightly crushed 2 medium onions, grated 1 medium tomato, chopped 1 teaspoon turmeric powder 1 tablespoon Kashmiri red chili powder ¾ cup yogurt, beaten 4 teaspoon salt, or to taste 1 cup water

Instructions In a pan, over low heat, dry roast coriander, cumin, poppy seeds, almonds, brown cardamoms, peppercorns, cloves and coconut, together, until fragrant and lightly coloured, taking care not to overbrown or burn the spices. Allow the spices to cool and tip into a blender along with the red chilies, ginger, garlic and nutmeg.Add water in which the chilies were soaked ( ½ cup), little by little, and blend to a smooth, thick paste.

Once completely cool, open the lid and skim off whatever excess fat has settled on the top,if you like.Mix well and then return to heat, uncovered, to reduce if the sauce is too thin. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring, over medium-high heat until the sauce is reduced and thickened slightly. Add more seasoning if needed. Serve sprinkled with coriander leaves and a red chili on top. As with all curries, it can be accompanied by rice or naan bread. For those who are a bit wary of spicy food, the cucumber and yoghurt based raita served on the side should cool things down if needed.

Meanwhile, heat oil and butter mixture over medium heat in a large pressure cooker.Tip in bay leaves, cinnamon and green cardamoms, and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add onions and fry over medium-low heat, stirring often, until onions are golden brown, about 20 minutes. Now tip in the ground masala paste, tomato, turmeric and chili powder, and toss well. Let the sauce bubble for 2 minutes. Stir in yogurt, in tablespoons, and stir-fry until all yogurt is added and the oil separates, about 3-4 minutes.Season with salt, and then add the lamb and fry till the meat is slightly browned, for maximum flavor. Top with 1 cup of water and stir well to combine. Now, close the cooker and bring to full pressure on high heat (the cooker whistles when it reaches full pressure). Then reduce heat and cook for another 10 minutes. Take off heat and allow to cool naturally.

There is an old saying "Keep your business in town if you want to keep your town in business" This is truer today than it ever was, but there are other reasons to buy local when it comes to buying meat.Your local Craft Butcher buys from local farms, and the animals are slaughtered locally which has a direct bearing on meat quality. Buying locally contributes to the local economy and also ensures the quality of the meat is far superior.

TOP TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL

TRANSPLANTING When buying trees or shrubs for your garden, be sure you have the right plant for the right place, take into account the site, the hardiness of the new plants, and your geographic location. The following are things you can do to help your transplants become well established: Check the intended site to be sure it is suitable for the trees and/or shrubs you want to put there. Check the site to be sure the plants will receive enough sunlight. Check the soil for pH levels and proper drainage, and dig deep enough so the roots can penetrate deep into the soil to anchor it and gather moisture. Trees have traditionally been offered for sale in the nursery trade using three methods:bare-root,balled and burlapped (B&B),and containers including potin-pot and in-ground fabric containers. Check the plants over thoroughly before buying them.

Make sure to water your plants during dry periods while they are becoming established. Transplants do not have a large root system to help them reach deep down into the soil to take in water and they can become stressed easily. This also makes them more at risk to injury from insects and diseases, but also make sure your new plants are not getting too much water, either by overwatering or being planted in soil that does not properly drain, as too much water will smother the roots and will eventually kill the plant. If your new tree or shrub was grown in a container and its roots have become twisted inside the pot, make sure to unravel and gently spread the roots apart before planting. Most importantly be patient since you probably will not see signs of vigorous growth for the first year. After transplanting new trees or shrubs it takes a few years for woody plants, especially trees,to become established in your garden. One of the more common mistakes in transplanting trees is planting too deep, and over or under watering.

Look for healthy growth and good leaf colour. Check the roots they should be white and firm. If the roots are blackened or soggy and soft it can indicate disease or pest problems so it would be best to avoid that tree or shrub and buy another one instead.

Careful attention to properly preparing the planting hole will greatly increase your chances of successfully transplanting trees. The planting hole should be at least three times as wide as the root ball, have sloped sides, and be no deeper than the root ball.

Call 087 243 4211 or 01 452 3979 Plant the tree about 50 millimetres higher than the surrounding ground to allow settling of the root ball and prevent pooling of water at the tree base.If the tree is bareroot, make sure to spread the roots before backfilling. After the tree is set in the planting hole at the proper depth, gently remove the pinning nails or rope lacing so the burlap can be cut and removed from the sides of the rootball. The burlap at the bottom of the root ball should be left. Removing the bottom burlap may injure the roots. If a wire basket has been used, cut away as much of the basket as possible without disturbing the root ball. This will avoid any conflicts with the roots or with any equipment used later. Mulch should be placed around newly planted trees to help conserve moisture and reduce competition for moisture from turf grass. Be careful not to over-mulch; 50 millimetres is the right depth.Keeping the mulch 150 millimetres away from the trunk of the tree to avoid disease problems and rodent damage. If fertilizer is applied at planting, use a slow-release fertilizer at a rate not to exceed 1lb. of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. Avoid using fast-release fertilizers to avoid root burn. Staking should only be done if absolutely necessary and any stakes should be removed within a year or two following planting.Be careful that the staking materials do not injure the trunk of the tree or girdle the tree. Prune only broken or diseased limbs at planting.

Basic Fat Loss

HOWTO

LOSETHAT FAT When it comes to an individual's physique each person has a unique set of goals and their own interpretation of what is aesthetically pleasing

improve performance or to simply look and feel better, then losing fat and increasing muscle mass is often an important aspect to your success.

may be consuming more calories than they are burning. Portion control and actually weighing your food can make a big difference.

So how can you achieve this? Well, the question regarding fat loss can be answered pretty easily. To lose weight or body fat you must consume fewer calories than you are expending.

Try doing an Internet search, there are a lot of really good websites with info on how to calculate things like maintenance values as well other dietary tips. Sites like www.myfitnesspal.com provide a free app to record what you eat throughout the day, as well as a ‘friend’ function so you can cheer each other on.

On the other hand if you wanted to add weight you would need to consume more calories than you are burning and to remain at the same weight you would be consuming the same amount of calories that you are burning, easy right. Weight loss can be achieved either through diet, exercise or a combination of both.

Another important aspect to fat loss is exercise. This can include anything from walking on a treadmill and lifting weights to doing chores around the house, but it all comes down to calories in vs. calories out.

A healthy fat loss diet should consist of a combination of macronutrients as well as adequate water intake. (Macronutrients are the nutrients needed in larger quantities i.e. proteins, carbohydrates and fats!). As long as the total amount of calories consumed from these macronutrients is less than what you are burning, weight loss will occur.

Studies have shown that doing circuit weight training is just as beneficial for improving cardiovascular fitness and burning calories to walking at a fast pace for the same given time.

Take a look around a gym and you’ll see a variety of training methods and physiques to match. For example you might observe the stereotypical muscle-head who loves nothing more than entering a room and having everyone’s jaws drop at the sight of their imposing and masculine figure.

So how many calories less should you be consuming you might ask? A good guideline to achieve steady weight loss is to reduce your daily intake by about 10-20% of your maintenance caloric value until a desired weight or body fat level is reached.

Not only does resistance training help prevent muscle loss but the extra lean body mass will help burn up those extra calories throughout the day. In addition to this by making sure you are taking in an adequate amount of protein throughout the day it will help prevent muscle loss as well as aiding in recovery for your next workout.

Then at the other end of the room you may see a slim and well “toned” person on the treadmill running for what seems to be a long time. Whether your goal is to

After all, not only is starving yourself unhealthy but it is short term thinking often popularized by fad diets. If someone is exercising regularly and is not losing weight then they still

And don't worry folks, you don't have to worry about getting too big or “bulky”,if it were that easy we would all be fitness models by now!

Dublin Rock Tyrone to end 20 year league famine! Dean Rock was sprung from the bench on Sunday 28th April and scored two crucial and spectacular points to help Dublin win their first National League crown since 1993 in front of over 30,000 spectators in Croke Park. Dublin received a welcome boost when Tyrone Captain and talisman Stephen O’Neill was forced to withdraw from the game after injuring an ankle in the warm up,and then started the brighter in an intriguing contest which saw very little separating the teams throughout the game. The difference in the end was the strength in depth that the Dubs have and the quality of the subs, with Dennis Bastick, Kevin McManamon and the man of the moment Dean Rock making a difference when they were introduced in the second half against a Tyrone team who tired significantly in the last quarter. Hopefully the Dubs don’t get too carried away with their league win and much like Cluxton’s acceptance speech after the game there is a lot of work to be done before the championship starts on June 1.

Rovers Road to the Setanta Sports Cup Final has taken them the length and breath of the country, from County Derry to Cork City, via Antrim, The Hoops have marched on. Now that road leads back home to Tallaght for a showdown with the most successful team in the competitions history Drogheda United. It all started with a disappointing 0-1 home defeat to Coleraine on Feb 11.Even though the result wasn’t great Rovers weren’t too down hearted as they’d put it up to the visitors and could count themselves unlucky to have got nothing from the game. The Hoops headed north for the second leg hopeful of overturning the one goal deficit and made a great start when Mark Quigley gave them the lead on the night after five minutes. Quigley’s goal put him in the record books as being the only player to score for four different clubs in the Setanta Cup after he’d previously netted for Sligo, Dundalk and St Pats in the competition. Rovers dominated possession but had to wait till the last minute to claim a deserved victory when Ciaran Kilduff scored after a scramble in the box. The next round threw up a mouth-watering fixture as The Hoops were paired with IFA Premiership Champions Linfield. Both clubs can rightfully claim to be the two biggest on the island and neither was going to want to lose the tie. The first leg was played at Tallaght Stadium and turned out to be more one sided than expected. Linfield had been struggling in their own league and they carried their poor form into this match. The Hoops completely outclassed Linfield as goals from Ronan Finn, Stephen Rice and two from Ciaran Kilduff saw Rovers run out 4-1 winners and give themselves a great chance of progressing to the semi finals.

CUP Windsor Park held no fear for Rovers as they recorded an impressive 3-1 win to stamp home their superiority over Linfield. Two goals from Tommy Stewart and one from Billy Dennehey gave the Hoops an impressive 7-2 aggregate win.Next up was the semi final and now only Cork City stood between Rovers and a second ever appearance in the Setanta Sports Cup Final. The first leg took place at Tallaght Stadium and it was the Leesiders who would have headed home the happiest having been the slightly better team and scoring a valuable away goal in a 1-1 draw. The result extended Cork’s unbeaten record in the competition to 15 games and Rovers were going to have their work cut out to knock them out in their own back yard. The second leg was delicately poised when Cork took a deserved lead in first half stoppage time.Rovers showed great spirit in the second half and had been piling on the pressure when Stephen Rice scored from a deflected shot with just under 20 minutes to go. With three minutes remaining it looked like Rovers had finally been put to the sword when a corner was flicked on and Daryl Kavanagh scored what looked like being the winner for the hosts. In keeping with Rovers start to the season they weren’t dead and buried yet and there was still a sting in the tail. When the referee awarded Rovers a free kick outside the box it was left to ex- Cork City player Billy Dennehy to curl his effort into the back of the net and send the Hoops into the final on away goals. What it meant to the players and staff was evident from the reaction to the goal as massive celebrations broke out on the Rovers bench. Just a few months into his first season as Rovers manager Trevor Croly now has a final to look forward to and a chance to claim his first piece of silverware as Hoops boss.

57 TONY “BOOTS” GRANT has played for both Rovers and Drogheda. He came off the bench to score the equaliser for Drogheda in the 2007 Setanta Cup final against Linfield at Windsor Park as the Louth men went on to win the cup on penalties.

PETER WALKER from Crumlin has been supporting Rovers since 1968. We asked him what his thoughts were on the Setanta Cup Final. I’m delighted we’re in the final because so far the season hasn’t been great.Considering also that we got to the final with draws, we’re the draw kings at the moment! We just can’t seem to click for some reason. I think getting to this final is brilliant; we just need to kick on from it now. The fact that it’s on in Tallaght should gee the players up.If it doesn’t gee them up then they shouldn’t be with the club! I think everyone needs to give Trevor Croly a chance. We were all happy with his appointment, it’s only a few games into the season,it’s a work in progress, at least Trevor is trying to play football. Listen, we’re Rovers, everyone who comes out to play us it’s their cup final, the players have to understand that.Drogheda won’t fear coming here. We have to put one over on Drogheda this time after they beat us in the League Cup Final last season in Tallaght. That was a shocking game, we never turned up for that, I hope it doesn’t happen again. They have some good players. The last time Gary O Neill scored for us was in the Setanta Cup Final, lets hope he doesn’t do it again!

“ I’d be quite confident we’ll do it. ”

Tell us about your experience of winning the Setanta Cup? It was a great occasion, played in front of a big crowd, a day that I’ll never forget. We had a great team that year; we won the league championship as well that season. I wasn’t starting every game, there was lots of competition for places, I came off the bench on the hour for Fabio who picked up an awful cruciate injury. The game was fairly one sided, we absolutely battered Linfield, who were playing in their own ground as well, but somehow they managed to take the lead.Paul Keegan with his first touch played a lovely pass into space and I finished it to draw level. We could’ve won it before it went to penalties. Luckily enough the shoot out went our way.

It would be great for bringing people together. When I was at Drogheda we played Linfield and the fans got on great. When Drogheda went up there the Linfield supporters took them on a tour of Shankill.Football is great for bringing people together.

Will you be going to the final? I always keep in touch with what’s going on but I haven’t been to Tallaght Stadium yet. I was going to go to the final but it’s on the same day as my daughters First Communion so I won’t be able to go.I live beside a Drogheda fan whose son is also making his Communion that day with my daughter and he’s cracking up because he’s going to miss it as well! Even his son wants to go to the match but his mother is having none of it! We’ll just have to watch it on the telly.

What have you of Rovers Would you be sad if made this was the last year start to the season? of the competition? When I played it was a great tournament to be involved in. It was one of the competitions you wanted to win at the start of the season. Back then there was a great spread of money for the clubs. It was great to test yourself against players from another league.I would be sad to see it go. I don’t know what happened this year; the teams from the Irish League didn’t take as much interest, for some reason. I think it’s tough as well for the fans getting around for mid week matches,Cliftonville going to Cork are never going to bring a big crowd. It’d be unfortunate if it wasn’t continued; it’s great to get the two leagues competing against each other.

Would you like to see an All Ireland League?

I’d love to see one league but I don’t think it’ll ever work. There’s a power shift happening in Northern Ireland, Cliftonville and Crusaders have done well, as have Glenavon, they’re big clubs with big set ups. I think you’d have a very good league; it would need to be professional though. I don’t know if the IFA would be up for it.

I think they’ve started slow; Trevor must be scratching his head wondering what’s going on.They’ve picked up some good results though. Before the season started I thought Rovers were going to win the league. It’s good for them that they have Shane Robinson back; you need him in the middle with Stephen Rice, two very good players. Mark Quigley was a great signing as well. Rovers have a very strong squad and I’m sure they’ll find their form soon and go on a run.

Who do you think will win the final? It’s a tough one for me because my heart is with both teams; I had great times with both of them. On the day Rovers might sneak it. I think it’ll be a very tight game, with neither side giving much away. Who ever takes that first chance will win. It would be great to see Rovers win and I think they need it to be honest with you, would be a great start for Trevor to win a cup early on.I’m just hoping it’s a good game of football and I wish both sides all the best.

58 You know what you’re going to get with Drogheda. No disrespect to them but they don’t play the greatest football, but it is effective and gets them results. They’re good at what they do and they’ve beaten Sligo in the semi. Theyhaveafewdecentplayers,Brennanwhoplaysinthemiddleisagood player and of course Gary O Neill as well who has goals in him.

What has been Rovers best performance in the Setanta Cup this year? Definetely Linfield at home in the quaters. The build up and the excitement around that match was huge and the team performed brilliantly on the night to win 4-1.

SEAN O’CONNOR came back to Shamrock Rovers last November via St Pats motivated by a desire to win more silverware. With The Hoops set to contest the first major final of the season he might not have to wait too long to prove he made the right choice by returning to Rovers

What are your thoughts on reaching the final? I’m delighted, it’ll be the first time I’ll hopefully be involved in a Setanta Cup Final, I’m looking forward to it.I didn’t play in the 2nd leg against Cork, when we went 2-1 down so late on we feared the worst but credit to the lads they done well to come back. We scored another late goal, we’ve scored a few already this season. It showed great spirit from the lads.

Do you think playing the final at Tallaght Stadium will be an advantage for Rovers? I’m not too sure. Drogheda won there last year against Rovers in the League Cup Final so I don’t know if it’s much of an advantage.

Do you think it’ll put more pressure Will there be an extra on Rovers? bite at training now with competition for places for the final Will the Rovers lads up for grabs? be wary of Drogheda after what happened in that League Cup Final last year? We trained the day after on the Tuesday and everyone was buzzing.

I don’t think so, the only pressure will come from ourselves and we will probably be favourites anyway.

There’s been a competition for places here since the start of the season, with the talent in the squad nobody was going to be guaranteed to start, we all knew that. No one has played every game and I’m sure it’s going to be like that for the rest of the season.

Do the players enjoy playing in the tournament? Yes the players do like it.It’s good to be able to test yourself against teams from the north. If this is the last year of the competition it would be a loss.I suppose there hasn’t been the same interest this season from supporters, the crowds have been bad. When we played Cork in the 1st leg we thought it would be a big night crowd wise but it wasn’t. It’s expensive enough to go to league games, especially if you’re bringing children as well so maybe the extra cost is a factor. It would be sad to see the competition scrapped.

Would you like to see an All Ireland League? I’d love to see it, it would be brilliant but I’m not sure it’ll ever happen. I think the IFA and FAI would be worried about losing European places. Because we play in a 12 team league, where we play each other three times, plus with cup matches you can end up playing the same teams four or five times a season which is a little bit crazy.

Do you think the fact that the semi finals consisted totally of teams from the Republic shows our league is better than theirs at the moment? Yes, definitely.Once again I’m not being disrespectful but the standard of clubs from the League Of Ireland has been better.I think St Pats were the only League Of Ireland team to get knocked out by a team from the north.

InTallaght35Master_Layout 1 01/05/2013 15:05 Page 59

You’re on record as saying the reason you left St Pats was because you felt their mentality wasn’t focused on winning things. Will you feel vindicated if Rovers win the first cup final of the year? I stand by my decision even though we haven’t started that well. I moved because Rovers are a bigger club and my decision was made because I believe I have a better chance of winning things at Rovers. They have more of a winning mentality than Pats. I’ve been getting stick on Twitter from Pats fans saying I only moved for the money but believe me nobody in this league really moves for money! I have only won one league winners medal and I want to add to that.

Finally Sean do you think The Hoops can catch Sligo? Yeah hopefully we can. They’ve hit a bit of a rocky patch recently after being beaten twice. They have a few tough games coming up in the next three weeks and we’ll have a chance to try and cut their lead when they come to Tallaght, I think we can catch them. We have to concentrate on ourselves, put a run of wins together, but there’s a long way to go yet.

I MOVED BECAUSE ROVERS ARE A BIGGER CLUB AND MY DECISIONWAS MADE BECAUSE I BELIEVE

I HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF WINNINGTHINGS AT ROVERS

It’s also great getting to compete against clubs we wouldn’t normally play against. I know that the northern teams that came to play us in Tallaght this season were very impressed with the facilities and we struck up good relationships with them both through the administrations and the fans. I would be sad to see the competition go and I hope the FAI and IFA can come together and organise something.

MARK LYNCH is Marketing Director at Rovers

I must also say a big thank you to Setanta Sports for their amazing support for the competition. They were brave to get behind it initially as it was the first time in a long time that an All Ireland tournament had taken place, I think the previous one had been in the 70s. Hopefully they have been rewarded. They gave the clubs the incentive, now hopefully we can get someone to keep the competition going.

It’s great for the club, the players and supporters to get to the Setanta Sports Cup Final. Cup finals are always occasions to get excited about, plus the fact it’s in Tallaght Stadium as well makes it even more attractive. Having been down to Cork for the semi final I could see that getting to this final meant a lot to the players. We haven’t played in too many Setanta Cups as we didn’t qualify for it until 2010.When we won it in 2011 by beating Dundalk expectations around the club were lifted with only a third of the season gone. The Setanta Cup has been good for League Of Ireland teams as the prize money and rewards are significant.

“Setanta are delighted to have been involved in the Setanta Sports Cup since its inception in 2005,there have been so many good games in the past and they would like to wish both participants all the best and lets hope the final is a cracker to finish off our involvement.” Brian Quinn, Head of Marketing, Setanta Sports

Rovers win Match Day Management Team of the Year Award 2012 Shamrock Rovers have been awarded the Match Day Management Team of the Year award for 2012. The award is now in its fifth year and rewards Airtricity League clubs for their approach to match day issues that enhance the experience of supporters. Announcing Shamrock Rovers as the winners of the 2012 Match Day Management Team of the Year, FAI Chief Executive John Delaney said:“Shamrock Rovers are very worthy winners of the 2012 Match Day Management Team of the Year Award.
