St.Colmcille’s Senior NS Win Green-Schools Travel Awardfor Cycling

innovative ways these students have taken up the challenge of making their commute to and from school active and sustainable is very encouraging. The schools have shown that, regardless of whether your school is located in an urban or rural environment, sustainable transport is an option.”

An Taisce, in partnership with the Department of Transport and the National Transport Authority, were delighted to host this year’s Green-Schools Travel Competition Awards Ceremony in Croke Park,to award the winning schools in its national travel competition which saw St. Colmcille’s Senior National School, Knocklyon win in the Cycling category.

Mr. Anthony Purcell, Acting Green-Schools Travel Manager commented: “These schools have demonstrated how to create a real shift from private car based school travel to more sustainable modes by applying the Green-Schools methodology and today’s winners represent all schools implementing the programme throughout Ireland.”

At a special awards ceremony Mr. Alan Kelly,T.D., Minister of State with special responsibility for Public and Commuter Transport, presented prizes, trophies and certificates of achievement to the winning students in the An Taisce Green-Schools Travel competition.

Congratulating St.Colmcille’s on their achievement Green-Schools Travel officer Kathryn Poxon added:“St Colmcille’s Senior National School in Knocklyon is one of the largest primary schools in Ireland with over 700 pupils. They got their Green Flag for Travel in 2009 and have expanded their Travel programme since then.

There was an overwhelming response to the competition this year, which called for schools to explain why they deserved the title of Ireland’s Travel School of the Year 2013, a claim they were asked to back up with statistics showing their school’s shift from non-sustainable to sustainable modes of transport.

“The school’s biggest achievement has been in encouraging safe cycling to school and their most recent surveys show that cycling has increased from 5% to 30% of the school population. On one of their COW days, they broke records and had over 400 cyclists.

There were seven category winners and seven runners-up in this year’s competition with awards presented to schools for their outstanding work promoting particular modes of transport including: walking, cycling, park ‘n’ stride, carpooling and a combination of modes. Congratulating the winners and runners-up in each category Minister Kelly said: “Seeing the

10 Re-establishing the Cumann Gaelach Brian MacCormaic told InTallaght: “Since its foundation, Cumann Gaelach Thamhlachta has made great strides in promoting the use of the Irish language in Tallaght, including regular céilí’s and Irish classes, sports, outings and activities organised during Seachtain na Gaeilge, and the establishment of the all-Irish schools in particular. “Sadly though, despite all that was achieved in the earlier years, very few of these activities continue today. For a variety of reasons, many of the strongest supporters no longer have any connection with the promotion of Irish.

New National Music Hub launched at National Concert Hall Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy DeenihanTD,was at the National Concert Hall today to launch its new RESIDENCIES programme, creating a national music hub at Earlfort Terrace. As part of the National Concert Hall’s role as the centre for musical excellence in Ireland, the Hall has offered residency space at its Dublin site to two key music organisations, the Irish Baroque Orchestra and the National Chamber Choir of Ireland. In addition to welcoming these national organisations to the building, the National Concert Hall is throwing open its doors to contemporary Irish musicians within the Residencies programme. Through the creation of a pilot Artist Writing Space programme, acclaimed songwriters Cathy Davey, Neil Hannon, Glenn Keating, James Vincent McMorrow and Paul Noonan will have access to one writing space each at the National Concert Hall for the next year to develop their own work, and potentially, collaborate with each other and with the National Concert Hall.

Speaking at the National Concert Hall this morning,Minister Deenihan said:“This is a new and welcome initiative being taken by the National Concert Hall. It progresses the Hall’s role as the national centre for musical excellence and a leading cultural institution. I hope that these residencies will allow for greater creative exchange between these musicians, benefitting both them and their audiences into the future.” “The National Concert Hall is delighted to support Irish composers and musicians through its new residencies programme”,said Simon Taylor, Chief Executive of the National Concert Hall. “This programme is an integral part of the National Concert Hall’s development plans for its Earlsfort Terrace site, making productive use of space, initiating artistic and strategic partnerships, facilitating musical creativity, delivering additional value for public money and building the Hall’s status as the home of music in Ireland. “Since it opened in 1981, the National Concert Hall has been proud to be the home of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and it is very exciting for us now to be welcoming these organisations and artists to their new home. We look forward to fascinating creative connections and collaborations emerging and to our residents becoming an integral part of the Hall’s programme.”

“The schools continue to provide an excellent education to children, but after school hours, or when students eventually leave school altogether to move out into the wider community, there is nothing there to hold onto them or to encourage them to continue using their Irish where possible. “There are still many people in Tallaght favourable to the Irish language who would be only too happy to help organise events, if only they had the right vehicle to draw them back. Many former pupils of Scoil Santain,Scoil Chaitlín Maude, Coláiste de hÍde, and Coláiste Chilliain, who now have their own children, would welcome the opportunity to become involved again and to re-learn the Irish language as adults. “I would like to invite all former members of Cumann Gaelach Thamhlachta, and all friends of the Irish language, to come together simply to speak the language in an informal relaxed atmosphere, and hopefully, to rebuild a strong and active Irish language community in Tallaght. An Irish Language conversational get-together will be held in Molloy's Foxes Covert every Thursday at 8pm (Horseshoe Lounge),beginning Thursday May 9.Those wishing to attend don't need to be fluent in the language so long as they are willing to make the effort to speak as much Irish as they have. Anyone wishing to know more can email: brian.maccormaic@gmail.com or call Brian on 086 243 7043.

11 You can also run a scheme in your area by adopting the Green Dog Walker programme for your area. To adopt the Green Dog Walker you need to: ● be a constituted community group ● administer the project eg distribution of materials, meeting mailing costs, etc. ● help with promotion of the campaign in your area ● run or take part as a volunteer in at least 3 pledge booths or GDW events annually ● help with the monitoring and evaluating of the campaign at a local level e.g. before and after surveys, participate in questionnaires sent and feedback on the number of armband wearers approached to ask for a dog bag etc.

Green Dog Walkers programme The Green Dog Walkers programme was launched by Mayor Cathal King in Sean Walsh Park, Tallaght at the end of April. Also present were members of the DSPCA, the Kennel Club, the Council’s Dog wardens and local resident dog owner Sharon Murphy. Green Dog Walkers (GDW) is a regional programme involving South Dublin County Council, Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council, Fingal County Council, Meath County Council and Wicklow County Council.

I look forward to meeting lots of green dog walkers in the County.” A spokesperson from Tallaght Hospital said “We welcome the launch of the Green Dog Walking Initiative. We support the objective to improve our local environment by the responsible management of dog fouling by dog owners. We believe this initiative will help enhance the wellbeing of our community by reducing the risk of infection posed by dog fouling." Tony Kavanagh from Rathfarnham Tidy Towns was also present and said“Tidy Towns welcomes this programme as dog fouling is a real problem and a health risk”

The Mayor Cathal King said“I welcome this initiative and am delighted to officially launch the Green Dog Walkers programme in Sean Walsh. Dog fouling is a very serious health issue. Young children are particularly at risk.

Volunteers wear a Green Dog Walkers armband which signifies that they have "taken the pledge" to always: ● clean up after their dog ● wear the armband or put the Green Dog Walkers collar on their dog when walking ● carry extra dog waste bags ● be happy to be approached to 'lend' a dog waste bag to those without ● be a friendly reminder to other dog walkers to clean up after their dogs.

“Dog owners should take responsibility for their dogs and make sure they clean up after the dog. This is a great way to raise awareness of the way to look after your dog.

All you have to do is sign a pledge form which can be got through www.socialcredits.ie then they will post you out a Green Dog Walker armband and a GDW bone dog bag dispenser.

It is a non-confrontational,friendly way to change attitudes about dog fouling in South Dublin County. It is a community based scheme that volunteers in the community can adopt in their own area and promote.

If you are interested in rolling out the campaign in your local neighbourhood or would like some more information email info@sdublincoco.ie, log onto www.socialcredits.ie or call 01 414 9000.

INTERVIEW again. We really think if its going to get around the world this will be the one.We want to give it every chance.

BIPOLAR EMPIRE By Padraig Conlon

Do you share the songwriting around for this album?

BIPOLAR EMPIRE are a four piece band from Tallaght who’ve been together since 2007. They’ve just finished recording their second album so InTallaght Magazine decided now was a good time to meet up with the lads for a catch up.

Shane: I write the lyrics and then everyone comes in after to make the song better, everyone puts their bit on.This album is such a collaboration in terms of that, everyone was given a free role. I think that’s the way we’ll always work from now on. Cal: I think it was brilliant because Shane had written two or three songs that we thought had to go on the album so me and Joe worked till about two in the morning one night. We were in the studio just coming up with different ideas, bouncing drum and bass off each other. We thought those songs were so good we had to have them on the album.

So it was a lot less So you’ve just finished How does it differ from stressful than recordyour second album FeelThatYou Own It? ing the first album? Shane: (Points at Mark) Well it differs already Cal: Ah yeah it was! We’re all best mates now would you like to because he’s playing on it for one! after this album. After the first one it was Mark: The first album was recorded in LA as a madness, we were ready to kill each other! tells us about it? three piece and when I joined I put on little small Shane: The first thing Tom the producer said to Shane:WerecordeditinLondon,inMetropolisStudios wereatitonandoffforaboutfourorfivemonths, going back and forth to London. It’s everything we hoped it would be.We’re very happy with it.

Have you got a title for it yet? Shane: Callum! Cal: Jeremy! No we don’t have a title for it yet, I think the title is such a hard thing to come up with. That’s why we called the first album Feel That You Own It as it’s catchy and it almost has a subliminal message when you see it on the shelf.

bits on it but with this one it was basically the four of us in the studio and it sounds more like that. Feel That You Own It was produced by two different guys,Pat McCarthy and Lance Holden,so you can tell there were two different producers whereas this one sounds like the same album.Any song you listen to you’ll know it’s off this album.

When will it be released? Shane:It’s hard to know because we don’t want to release it ourselves like we did with the first one as we’ve put too much into it to do that

us on the first day was:“I’ve got a family so I work 9 to 5 “ and we were all like “Thank you!” Mark: When you’re in the studio, every day costs money, plus we’re a lot better players now so the whole process was a lot quicker. The lads got the bass and drums done pretty much in one day. That’s really really good going! Joe: There was just no organisation the last time, this was much better organised. We did more hours last time but got less done.We should have made the last album in two weeks. Cal: We pretty much did this album in five or six sessions. Shane: It was more about thoroughly working when you were in there and getting your stuff done...

16 What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far? Cal: This interview! Joe: Recording this album. Mark: When you’re starting out in music at 15 and some one said to you that you’re going to get to record an album in Metropolis Studios in London, one of the best studios around, where legend bands like Queen have recorded, you would’ve thought“No way!”We think this album protrays us as best as we can be.Hopefully people get it. Cal:We are very confident in it, and really happy with it, but you can never tell how these things will go.You could make the best album but then crazy frog comes out the same week! And that’s it you’re gone! Shane: Someone just says “Computer says no!”

What do you think of the Irish music industry right now? Joe: I think there are some great bands in this country at the moment. Shane: It’s really hard because Ireland is so small, you really have to be a big shot here to do well. Mark: Yeah most bands have to leave but there are bands who have done well from Ireland, bands like The Coronas, they’ve done really well here, play the o2 and that and now they’re looking to try other countries . You can do it in Ireland but I think if you want a long and prosperous career I think you have to go somewhere else. It doesn’t especially have to be England, it could be France! Cal: You can be small in France and still sell 10 times what you would here. I think if you stay here too long you get stuck here. I really like Republic Of Loose but they didn’t get out when they had the chance, same as The Blizzards. I remember Bressie said if you don’t get out when you have that window, you’re stuck here. You could become the biggest band in Ireland but you cant go any higher. Shane: We’ve never been involved in the music

industry in Ireland, we’ve always been out on our own,we’ve done it all ourselves. We’ve never been approached by a label in Ireland, never been involved with a management company in Ireland. We don’t have a clue about the industry here, we’re kind of outsiders to be honest with you.

What other Irish bands do you like? Shane: There are lots, Kodaline, I’ve a lot of time for those lads. Cal: Yeah, Jason their bass player used to be our sound engineer,he came to Brazil and all with us. Did pretty much all of our gigs then he just disappeared! Don’t know what happened him! Are you looking for a job as a producer?! Joe: Little Green Cars are getting really big, they’re all over the iTunes store at the moment. Also The Strypes. Mark: Then there’s a lot of local lads like Leaders of Men, The Hot Sprockets, Riptide Movement. They’re all kind of mates of ours because at the same time we’re all kind of at the same level.

Any bands you hate? Cal:I don’t think there are any, everyone gets on really well. Mark: Did you ever hear of that band the Dillion Keane Experience? We’re all in agreememt we don’t like them! Cal:Yeah they’re a bit annoying! They’re going to come after us wih pitch forks now!

What’s your favourite venue to play? Shane: The Olympia is very good. Cal: Space! The Olympia is good but it’s tricky for me though because the stage has a bit of a dip in it. Mark: The Academy, I’ve had some great gigs there. Joe: The Olympia.

Who have been the most famous musicians you’ve met so far? Joe: We met Brian Wilson in LA.

Was he alright? Mark: Not since the 70’s no! Shane: He was just zonked out!

What did you talk about? Cal: Sandwiches! Joe: Some bloke that was minding him slagged Cal about his braces which was funny! Mark: We’ve met Bono as well. We had just finished rehearsing in The Workmans club and in walked Bono with his mate Guggi. We were just tidying up and he walks up to us and says “Hey guys. Real rock and roll!” He told us he liked some of our songs. Our old manager had given him a copy of the album and he said we sounded like the Beatles. Shane: Yeah pigeon holed us just like that! Put him on the feud list!

You recently released the single So Sadin aid of suicide awareness. Is this a cause that was of a personal interest to you guys? Shane: Yeah a good friend of ours passed away through suicide and we always felt that it’s a very important charity for a very important issue. It’s

18 nice to try and do something to try and spread awareness. We were on Newstalk yesterday talking about it.

If you weren’t musicians what other job would you like to have done? Mark: What, we aren’t musicians?! Cal: Pimp would be good. Mark: Truck driver.Do it the opposite way to Elvis, fail as a musician and become a truck driver. Joe:Van Damme impersonator! Cal: Tyrannasourus Rex. A T-Rex pimp, I like the sound of that! Shane: On the dole probably!

Do you think the media image of Tallaght is bullsh*t? All: Absolutely, yeah. Joe: Every area has its good and bad. Shane: I think there’s a lot of tallent in Tallaght. I just think sometimes there might be a lack of confidence. You get Tallaght people who are afraid to stand out in case they get judged. I think that’s definitely the case. In Jobstown anyway, you almost have to hide.Even if you have long hair! Joe: (Points at Cal) Yeah the first time I saw him with his blue hair I remember thinking“Who the f*ck is he? I want to kill him!” because I was one of those lads Shane spoke about! Mark: Yeah Cal didn’t have an older brother like me and Joe who would bate the sh*te out of him! I found I could do whatever I wanted, I didn’t experience any bullying. I think you get hassle anywhere when you have long hair.I used to like the abuse!

You weren’t allowed look at them?! Cal: Yeah they’re all Barbara Streisands! Mark: Someone from the GAA told us we weren’t allowed look at them. Joe: Apparantly they melt! They lose all their confidence. Cal: I accidently looked a Donegal player in the eye!

So Cal it’s all your fault my county Donegal lost that semi final?! Cal: Yes it is, sorry! I looked him in the eye and that was that! They were a tough team Donegal.

You’re all from Finally, what’ s Tallaght, has growing your plan for the You played on the up here infuenced summer lads? your music in any way? pitch at half time in Shane: Hopefully do a few festivals. We’re Shane: Yes it has. Most of the experiences I write the 2011 All Ireland headlining the Block C Festival in The Academy about come from Tallaght. on June 29. Mark: Yes great support from the community. a few gigs in July, really looking forward to that. Even up at the schools, we played at St Marks recently and they were all really into it.Everyone tries to support us because there aren’t too many bands coming from Tallaght. There are a good few bands from Tallaght but there used to be a lot more. Cal: Yeah theah there used to be a massive scene here, Captain America’s was the best venue for live music. Mark: I think what happens is a lot of people just stop and get a job. Get older.

Shane: Brlliant, I love GAA, I played football and hurling for Thomas Davis for years. Mark: It was my first GAA match,I loved it,to play in front of 80,000 people, fantastic. Cal: It was the craziest thing because we had to get on and off so fast. Mark: We were sitting in a room and all the Donegal and Dublin players went by us and we weren’t allowed look at them.

There’s a load of other things we’re doing around the country as well. Mainly we’ll be rehearsing the bejaysus out of the new album! MEETING No matter what level you play football at, the margins are always very small, it’s the small little details that make a difference. The manager Trap goes on about them all the time, he’s always drumming into us“Little detail, little detail, little detail!” It’s those little things, whether it’s a free kick or a corner. It’s funny how football pans out, that’s why we all love it I suppose.

DAVID FORDE By Padraig Conlon

You don’t underestimate draws, especially in today’s game, getting draws and remaining unbeaten breathes confidence, at the end of the day we’re still unbeaten. You take the positive out of that, we’ll learn a lot from that going forward, it’ll galvanize us and make us stronger.

DAVID FORDE recently became the Ireland first choice goalkeeper. At the age of 33 David became the oldest Irish player ever to make his debut for his country. InTallaght Magazine caught up with the David at the recent launch of the eFlow FAI Summer Schools in the Aviva Stadium.

You have had some change in fortune in a year, this time last year you would’ve been hoping to be third choice keeper with the national side? Football is phenomenal the way it pans out, one minute I’m sweating thinking “Jesus am I going to get to the Euros?” Then all of a sudden I’m starting and have been number one for the last few games. I’m just so grateful to the manager as well; hopefully I can repay the faith he has shown in me.

There must have been some contrast in emotions for you. You make a great save in the last minute against Sweden and then concede a deflected goal in the last minute against Austria? I suppose it was, it was a bit quiet in the dressing room after the Austria game, everyone was a bit dumbstruck, we couldn’t believe it.

You’ve got a fairly exciting end to the season with games against England and Spain and the World Cup Qualifier at home? It’s fantastic, I’m really looking forward to meeting up for that. Everyone as a young kid dreams of playing against England don’t they? And especially playing at Wembley, it’s a special place, that’ll be a massive game, should be a full house and stuff but more importantly is the World Cup Qualifier against The Faroes. That’s the main game, it’s all we’ll all be geared up to getting fit and getting ready for that one. That game could be a potential banana skin, we know how important it is, the consequences if we don’t win.We all want to get to a World Cup, I’m sure everyone is going to be chomping at the bit, especially here at home. If we win that it’ll give us 11 points and will certainly put us in a good position going into the remaining games.

You’ll have quite a bit of time off between

Alan Dunne who plays with me at Millwall has been fantastic. He was Man of the Match v Palace at the end of the season,he marked Wilfred Zaha out of the game and he’s a £15 million player who has just gone to Man Utd. Alan was phenomenal, he well deserves a chance.

How has your Republic Of Ireland teammate Sean St Ledger settled in at Millwall? Yeah fantastic, he’s been immense for us since he came in. The manager has played him in what I suppose is a different role for him, sitting in the holding midfield role, he’s excelled at it, he’s been

It was just a faction of Millwall fans but at the end of the day we get anywhere between 10-14,000 at a home game and all of a sudden there’s 30,000 at Wembley which would suggest that they may have been friends of people going, they mightn’t even have been real Millwall fans. I think Millwall get hard done by, any bit of trouble at all and the media are on them. I suppose it’s down to their reputation and what’s happened in the past. The club have worked xtremely hard to eradicate that, it was very disappointing for something like that to kick off at Wembley.

Did you go to many soccer schools when you were young yourself? As a kid in Galway any chance I got to go to a summer school or a soccer event, I was there! They are some of my best memories, getting your packed lunch from your mother and off you go for the day.

I used to go to Terryland to watch games, there was only one Galway side then, hopefully it does go back to that for the good of the league.

Do you think we can still qualify for theWorld Cup Finals in Brazil? I’m actually very confident, I’ll think we’ll qualify. I just think on past performances we’ve looked focused and hungry. I think this team is improving, Séamus Coleman has been a revelation and James McCarthy has done brilliantly as well. I think Austria are a better side than Sweden, it was disappointing but look, we’re still in with a chance. That’s the main thing. We could’ve come out of those two games and now be talking about the European championships in two years time. I think Austria are a better football side, they’re sharper, quicker than Sweden. Alaba who plays for Bayern Munich, I thought he was phenomenal; he was an exceptional player that night. There’s still a lot of football to be played. If we have to beat Sweden and Austria to get the second spot then so be it.We have Sweden at home and after our performance against them I think we can win here and our away record is great so we can go to Austria and win.

Around 400 excited kids found their way to the free Decorating Workshop at the Square last Saturday. The area on Level 1 looked fantabulous, decorated with a garden fence, grass lawn carpets and spotted toadstool tables and chairs. There was also a kitchen, where the kids learned how to mix colours and dye icing with the help of the head chef Luigi Pantalone and his assistant chefs. At the Arts and Craft table the kids could paint pictures of how they wanted to decorate their cupcakes. Then they could create their own cupcakes as they had planned, from the paintings. Voila! The little bakers coloured their cupcakes in every colour of the rainbow and decorated them with cake sprinkles, cherries and sweets. Luigi himself was delighted to see so many kids showing up for the workshop.“My mother is from Italy and my father is from Ireland so I’m mixed together like a good spaghetti bowl! I’m thrilled to see the amazing decorating skills of the kids here in Tallaght!”he said in his Italian accent. The kids could also make cute little cards for their mums and dads at the Arts and Craft table and get a cupcake shaped balloon at the balloon modelling station.

Lyndsey and Shane Brennan were there with their 4-year-old daughter Elyssa.“She loves it, we usually come down whenever there is a kids event on at the Square. This is a great event, there is a good mix of stuff to do, it makes the kids be creative and they like getting their fingers dirty. This is an unforgettable day for the kids,”Lyndsey said. There was also a face painting station where the kids could get a cupcake painted on their face, or anything else they pleased. Twoand ahalf-year-old Grace Maywas there withher parents, Antoinette and Tony Courtney, and she was the first to get her face painted as a cute Hello Kitty.

Grace May certainly started a trend, soon all the little girls wanted to be Hello Kitties! “This is a really good event, Grace May loves baking, we do it at home once a week. “She also really liked the face painting and the other activities. All the chefs are very friendly and they really break through with the kids,” Antoinette said.

CINEMA

THE GREAT GATSBY By Rachel Lynch

So is Gatsby great?

eradicate all of who he,in reality,is.More than that, he has projected all of his life’s dreams and goals onto his lost love Daisy.

The film, based on the classic novel by F Scott Fitzgerald, has been brought once again to the cinema. This version stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the rich young Gatsby himself. Carey Mulligan plays Daisy the love of Gatsby’s life, and Tobey Maguire plays Daisy's cousin Nick, who narrates the story in flashbacks.

Gatsby has built an empire all in hope of one day finally winning back the love of his life. His legendary parties in his mansion are something of a first for the people in this era and are all held in the hope that Daisy will someday turn up at the mansion.

If you are not familiar with the book or story line it is a romantic film set in the 1920s and focuses on the life of one particular rich young handsome man. The movie is told through the eyes of Nick Carraway, an aspiring bond broker, who tells of a summer spent in New York.

The setting of the movie is as beautiful as the cast members. There is no doubt that the camera angles, backdrops and costume designs will take you to the 1920s instantly.I felt that the 3D effects in this particular movie and storyline were a waste, only being noticeble during the fireworks and confetti in the party scenes.

Nick lives in a highly sought after area for the well to do but rents quite a modest cottage. His neighbour Mr Gatsby owns a multi million dollar estate which towers over the tall trees surrounding Nick’s home.Gatsby sends a personal invite to Nick welcoming him to his home to enjoy one of his many midweek parties. We learn soon into the story exactly why Gatsby has such an interest in Nick.He is the cousin of Daisy who Gatsby met five years ago while in the army. Gatsby has created a manufactured identity based on who he wishes he was, in an attempt to

DiCaprio plays Gatsby brilliantly and I could not name one other actor that could have done that role justice after watching his performance. His real life charm shines through his character.Carry Mulligan on the other hand was not so convincing as Gatsby’s love interest. There was very little chemistry between the pair and I felt at times she played a different role to the one in the original novel. One thing I must rave about is the soundtrack to this film featuring artists like Jay-Z, Gotye, Emeli Sande and Lana Del Rey.The songs hit every single beat of the novel with love, loss, heartache and

decadence felt throughout the tunes. The music plays a central role in defining the landscape and mood of the film. Director Baz Luhrmann did a great job in keeping the movie as 1920s as possible despite the introduction of 21st century rappers and the whole move being shot in vibrant colour. Overall the movie was visually excellent and it is quite clear where the €105 million cost went. The story was fast paced, although while coming towards the end I felt as though there should have been more to come.

33 EPIC By Rachel Lynch

An Epic tale From the creators of Ice Age and Rio, EPIC begins in a fantastical world that tells the story of an ongoing battle between the forces of good, who keep the natural world alive, and the forces of evil, who wish to destroy it.When a teenage girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she teams up with an elite band of warriors and a crew of comical, larger-thanlife figures, to save their world...and ours. We experience the world of EPICthrough the eyes of Mary Katherine (she prefers M.K.), a smart, spirited and headstrong 17-year-old who finds herself on the journey of a lifetime. Amanda Seyfried, the versatile and popular star of movies such as Les Miserables and Mamma Mia, portrays M.K., whom the actress describes as "strong-willed and disconnected from her father to the point where she thinks there's no way she's going to be able to even live with him." The other man in M.K.'s life is a resident of this unseen realm, named Nod. Josh Hutcherson, who stars as the warrior Peeta Mallark in the blockbuster The Hunger Games trilogy, portrays Nod. Nod has a rebellious nature, which he directs mostly toward his father figure, the Leafmen's leader, Ronin. The Golden Globe winning powerhouse Colin Farrell portrays Ronin. This film also stars the voice talents of BeyoncĂŠ Knowles and Christoph Waltz.

34 DEADFALL By Rachel Lynch

A remorseless killer and bloody deeds played out against a snowy rural setting, sure what more would you want? Deadfall is a thriller that will certainly have you glued to your seat from start to finish. With a super dark plot and respectable cast I am sure it will tick all or at least most of the boxes with film critics this summer. The film begins with brother and sister Addison (Eric Bana) and Liza (Olivia Wilde) fleeing by car, after they have robbed a casino. When the car crashes at high speed the pair survive but their driver and fellow accomplice is now dead. As they try to escape from the wreckage they are approached by a concerned policeman who comes to their aid. Addison, fearful that he may be caught with all the money shoots the cop instantly to the shock of Liza. The pair are forced to split up and head on foot

toward the Canadian border. The film breaks off into two separate stories. During this time we are also introduced to another important character Jay (Charlie Hunnam). Although only just released from prison Jay ends up confronting the man who got him sent down and assaults him.The young fellow quickly finds himself on the run from the authorities again. Liza is stranded in the middle of nowhere when a car approaching stops to pick her up, it is Jay.He informs her he is heading to visit his parents who live just on the Canadian border, for Thanksgiving dinner. What will happen when their worlds collide in a twist of fate? Upon a sibling reunion, a thrilling showdown occurs that pushes the bonds of family to the limit. Who lives? Who dies? Does Liza get her chance of a normal life she has always craved for or will her brother destroy it all? Overall the movie is one I would recommend. It has many impressive action scenes. With a terrific opening you find yourself not wanting to look away in fear of what you may miss. I think when the movie was cast they had intended for Eric Bana to steal the show, and

although he is a great actor I really think Charlie Hunnam will win over the ladies. His character is the type of man we all want to marry one day, and Olivia Wilde doesn’t need much introducing. She too pulled off an excellent performance. This movie has earned high marks for its beautiful cinematography, courtesy of Shane Hurlbut which captures the snowy landscapes of Canada like few others have before, and Bana delivers a terrifying performance as a man determined to make it across the border at any cost. Throughout Deadfall’s 95 minute running time, director Ruzowitzky maintains a high level of intensity right up to the movie’s violent conclusion.

THE PURGE By Rachel Lynch

the front door allowing the man to enter their home, from then the story takes a crazy turn and all hell breaks loose.

What if on one night every year, you could commit any crime without facing consequences? It is the year 2022 America has finally solved its growing problem with violence and crime by making it legal. More precisely, it’s legal for a twelve hour period one night per year. Citizens are encouraged to stay safe in their secure homes, unless of course they care to vent their animalistic rage and partake in the annual event. The Sandin family feels safe behind their state of the art security shutters, but their son who is watching the cameras focused outside spots an injured man screaming for help at the gate of their premises. He disarms the alarm and opens

James, played by Ethan Hawke,is a salesman for a security company, and this year has been his best on record with sales to each and every one of his neighbours of the very same system he uses. He has always felt safe in his gated community especially when this particular dreaded date comes around. Unfortunately this year will not go as according to plan as every other year has done. Who survives this night of terror and who dies? One thing is for sure the Sandins family are in for a night they will never forget. I loved this movie, it’s unlike any other horror movie I have ever seen.It has the scare factor yet also has a story for you to follow however unrealistic it may be. The only criticism I would have is we are led to believe that the criminally minded are perfectly content living crime free 364 days per year, but we’re never told why. What’s to stop someone from committing evil deeds year round? The law? How’s that different from now? Ultimately though, the fictional social setup is irrelevant as this is top to bottom a home invasion movie. It’s here that the movie finds more success as the eventual assault features a couple well done sequences. One in particular, a fight between James and multiple intruders,is thrilling and beautifully choreographed. The whole movie is fast paced and will certainly have you on the edge of your seat with a number of unwatchable moments.

The good news is the Irish women are ranked within the top ten of the planet's best-looking nationalities status by the dating website.

Kelly tweeted:“Love my blue-eyed boy with all my heart and soul. He is the best thing that ever happened to me.

Georgina and Nicky expecting third baby

Obamas back in town?

Derry doctor shines on The Apprentice

Georgina Ahern and her husband former Westlife member Nicky Byrne announced they were expecting their third child early this month. The pair have been married 10 years now and are already parents to six year old twins Rocco and Jay. Nicky confirmed the news on his Twitter account, saying: “Morning y'all... Its time to share our exciting news... Georgina is expecting! Yep, Third "Baby Byrne" is on the way!!"

It’s believed that Michelle Obama may take a trip back to Ireland with her two daughters while her husband attends to business at the G8 summit in Lough Erne in Co Fermanagh. It’s been two years now since the both the Obamas made their historic visit to Ireland and it has been reported that Michelle would like to bring her girls Malia and Sasha to visit Moneygall in Co Offaly where one of Mr Obama's ancestors came from.

Alan Sugar’s The Apprentice kicked off again this month and all eyes were on Irish representative Leah Totton. The Derry native survived the first firing in the board room and proved she is one to watch in the series.Leah, 24, who is a doctor, previously dated Celtic goalkeeper and England hopeful Fraser Forster, 25, for four years.

Evanna Lynch role She became famous for her role as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series and now it appears Irish actress Evanna Lynch is up for another magical role. This time around Evanna is set to play the wife of legendary magician and escape artist Harry Houdini in a play about his early years. Joining her will be Stuart Brennan, who wrote the stage play as well, as Houdini's brother Theo. The stage production will be on show in theatres throughout the UK.

Baby no no for Vogue Vogue Williams and her husband Brian McFadden were back home in Ireland this month to visit family and friends. The pair made an appearance at the VIP Style Awards where she looked ravishing in a dress by American designer Badgley Mischka. When interviewed by The Sunday World the Irish model told how she doesn’t plan any babies just yet “I'm too selfish to have kids, I think maybe when I'm around 30”.

Pippa O’Connor and Brian Ormond made their first public appearance since the birth of their baby Ollie a few weeks previous. The new mum looked stunning in a beige peplum floor length gown. Darren Kennedy won the prize of Most Stylish Man after arriving in an eye-catching suit that may not be to everyone’s taste. I’m sure his ensemble had many asking the question of Most Stylish Man “Really”??

VIP Style Awards It was that time of year again when Irelands most stylish hit the red carpet to showcase some of their best looks at the Peter Mark VIP Style Awards at the Marker Hotel, Dublin.

Rosanna Davison was there on the night to receive her award for look of the year, a worthy winner in my opinion. The former Miss World wore a beautifully simple white and black chiffon style dress. Finally the winner for best dressed on the night went to TV3 morning show host Sinead Desmond. She too kept her look quite understated with a salmon colored grecian style dress with a polka dotted lace neckline.

MUSIC

NEON JAY SEAN By Rachel Lynch

It’s been over five years since we last saw British singer and rapper Jay Sean Neon is Sean's first full album release since he found huge success in the US with his third LP All or Nothing, which spawned the hits Down and Do You Remember, the star has been working on this since 2010.Even having kept quite a low profile the artist was named Lebara Mobile Asian Music Awards Artist of the Decade, back in October. Listening to Neon we see a slightly different side to the star. The album on a whole feels an awful lot more mature from his previous work. It is a mix of both RnB and pop.The album will feature artists like Pitbull, Nicki Minaj and Pharrell. The album begins with a track I’m All Yours featuring Pitbull. Sean's voice sounds powerful, potent, and pristine as he croons the verse. Then, Pitbull fires off a red hot rhyme just before everything culminates on a hook you won't have out of your head for days to come. Jay Sean incorporates an international flare. I absolutely love this next track Patience. For his long serving fans this will be a reminder of what Jay Sean is all about, and certainly one radio will have on repeat during the summer period. The song is upbeat and Jay Sean’s high pitched vocals are suited excellently to the slow of the song. It’s not a dance track but is far more than just a ballad.

CARRY ON UNION J By Rachel Lynch

Where You Are is a song that will appeal to all. It is probably the catchiest one on the whole album. You will find yourself constantly singing it for the next few days, after no more than one or two listens. It’s a song about a man trying to meet up with his girlfriend yet everything that could possibly go wrong on the day does. The opening lyrics “Do you know the feeling/When sometimes you wake up young/and sometimes you wake up old” really stands out. Up next is yet another collaboration this time with Afrojack on the song So High. This is one for all the clubs and a top party anthem. The only thing I can fault this song on is that there is little of Jay Sean’s personality on show and I feel it’s a case of the record companies throwing out a song that they know will sell regardless of whether its “Jay Sean” or not. It really has no real function or purpose. That being said it is a dance track that will be repeatedly played in clubs. SayYeahfeaturing Lupe Fiasco is a track that focuses on real old school RnB, an era that was more about a lighthearted good time and before auto tune. With Nicki Minaj popping up everywhere in the music industry it was only right she make an appearance on Jay Sean’s album.2012(It Ain’t The End) sounds exactly as I had imagined. Quite typical of Minaj yet Jay Sean simply adds to the overall joyous, expansive party feel of this record. Overall I think this album will be a huge success for the English singer. He has timed its release perfectly with the coming summer season. It will certainly be an album I will have in the car for those sunny days.

Union J have timed the release of their new debut single Carry You perfectly. As we approach the summer season the song will be a huge hit for the four piece. The English group shot to fame like their rivals, boy band 1Direction,having appeared on the X Factor in 2012. Union J finished in 4th position. Following their success, they signed with Sony Music and its subsidiary RCA Records.Band members Josh Cuthbert, JJ Hamblett, Jaymi Hensley and George Shelley have all distinctively original voices which separates them from many of the boy bands out there. Although when you hear the first few seconds of the song you may find yourself asking is this 1D? The melody is similar to a lot of 1Direction style, but the beat picks up as you hit the chorus and Union J prove that they are not a copycat version of one of the world’s most famous boy bands. There’s also a brilliant post chorus after the second chorus which goes “like you’ve been running for hours and can’t catch your breath, the demons are screaming so loud in your head, you’re tired you’re broken you’re cut and you’re bruised but nothing’s too heavy just hold on, I’ll carry you.”This is where the song slows down and then we await a huge comeback where the band belt out “yeah yeah yeah”to an upbeat melody. With 1Direction already fully established in this area I think it will be hard for Union J to break away and prove themselves as anything other than “another 1Direction”,but with songs like this they will certainly pick up a legion of new fans along the way.

TECH

SMARTPHONES By Cathal Jennings

SAMSUNG

GALAXY S4 In a world that seems full of smartphones only Apple and Samsung are making a significant profit Samsung’s new Galaxy S4 was made available in late April on 327 networks worldwide and in 155 countries. It reached 10 million pre-orders in the first two weeks after its announcement. Apple’s iPhone 5 has been available since September last year but is still one of the biggest players in the smartphone game. These two models are top of the market at the moment and with nothing on the horizon that can challenge them it seems like these two are going to battle it out for the top spot. The new Samsung Galaxy S4 is even bigger than the last model and a lot bigger than the iPhone 5. Apple rarely change the size of their models which is good news because it is easier to manage compared to the Samsung. The Galaxy S4 is made from plastic and if you are paying €500 for a phone I don’t think plastic is what

VERSUS you would be expecting. The iPhone is made from aluminium which gives it that quality feel like an expensive purchase should. The Samsung feels a bit cheap. The iPhone is very light and if a light phone is what you are looking for then look no further. The Samsung is a lot heavier than the iPhone and would weigh you down if you had it in your pocket. The Galaxy S4 has a much bigger screen which is great. It is more clear than the iPhone and if display is the big issue for you than the smart money is on the Galaxy. On paper both versions of the Galaxy S4 also beat the iPhone handsdown in a CPU showdown. Another encouraging sign for the Galaxy S4, as its 2GB of random-access memory (RAM) double the iPhone’s 1GB. Apart from the Galaxy S4’s microSD card (expandable to 64 GB), storage options are even. Battery life is another category where the Galaxy S4 looks great on paper. But you can’t take battery capacity as an absolute indicator of actual uptime – especially when the S4’s battery is powering a display with more than one million extra pixels. Apple estimates eight hours of talk or internet uptime for the iPhone 5. We’ll have to wait for some hands-on time with GS4 before drawing conclusions about its battery life.

APPLE

IPHONE 5 In high-end smartphones, 2013 is shaping up to be the year of the 13-megapixel camera. It’s possible Apple will join that club with the iPhone 5S, but, in the meantime, the iPhone 5’s rear shooter represents 2012’s defining benchmark of 8 megapixels. Samsung is heavily pushing its software-based camera features in Galaxy S4.These include Dual Camera (it simultaneously snaps shots and videos with both cameras and lets you imprint one inside the other), Drama Shot (a burst mode that combines the images into a collage), and Sound & Shot (records an audio clip along with still shots). Each approach has advantages and disadvantages. The Samsung angle may mean beating Apple to the punch on some important features, but it might also mean growing bloated with confusing, extraneous crap. Apple’s angle, on the other hand, might be too minimalistic for some customers: primitive, childlike, and unchanging. Maybe one approach isn’t more “right” than the other, and it’s up to you to decide which better suits you. After all, with just two companies standing atop the smartphone mountain, there should be plenty of room formore than one approach.

GAME

DEAD ISLAND: RIPTIDE By Cathal Jennings

Dead Island: Riptide teases far more in its opening minutes than it ever manages to deliver across its lengthy campaign There's no drama, and little excitement.Instead, there's a rehash of old ideas, combat that's fun for all of five minutes, and a seemingly never-ending slog of repetitive missions filled with characters that have the emotional depth of a wet sponge. If there were ever a video game equivalent of smacking your head against a brick wall, Riptidewould be it. The story–and that's using the word generously–is filled with the sort of terrible dialogue, hammy voice acting, and cliches you'd expect to see in an awful zombie spoof, or at best, a trashy B movie. But there's no sense of humour or self-awareness here, to Riptide's detriment,it takes itself very seriously. And that seriousness is hard to swallow when you have

to look after a bunch of shallow, argumentative characters who utter irritating swears every few minutes and prove so unlikable that you're willing them to be torn apart by the zombie horde, just so you can have some peace and quiet. Then there's the plot itself, which endlessly meanders between government conspiracy,sci-fi, and human interest, without even the slightest sense of direction. This all makes it so very hard to care about anything that happens in Riptide.By the time you drag yourself through to the disappointing ending, apathy has taken over to the point where you wouldn't bat an eyelid at even the most grand of revelations. And that's only if you can muster up enough energy to make it that far.Riptide's sandbox island of Hanoi isn't filled with the fun zombie-killing adventures you might expect. Instead, there are fetch quests:lots of fetch quests. The narrative reasoning behind each quest is questionable. Why some stranded villager might be after a few measly bucks when the entire island has been overrun with flesh-eating zombies that threaten the very existence of humankind is puzzling. To make matters worse, the combat that ties the whole thing together remains largely unchanged from that of Dead Island, which is to say it's massively frustrating. The focus is on melee weapons, ranging from blunt objects like baseball

bats and shovels, through to blades like carving knives and sickles. Most can be upgraded using items scavenged from around the island, with hidden blueprints giving you access to wilder designs. And initially at least, bludgeoning a zombie to death with an improvised, nail-covered baseball bat is amusing, thanks to the resulting blood splatters, severed limbs, and grisly sound effects. The limitations of the combat soon become clear, though.

FAR CRY 3: BLOOD DRAGON By Cathal Jennings

THIS ISTHE NEW STYLE FORTHE PICTURE

HEADLINES You play as Rex Colt a cyber-soldier and all-American hero

Names Of People Go Here 01 Names Of People Go Here 02 Names Of People Go Here 03

You are sent to an island to foil the world-domination plans of an ex-Colonel gone mad–think early Schwarzenegger films like Commando. However, in terms of gameplay, it’s virtually identical to Far Cry 3.Blade takedowns, scouting out locations, liberating garrisons, shooting wildlife, even realistic fire–it’s all here. In fact,it’s Rex and his supporting cast that really make Blood Dragon. While the '80s themes and early '90s visual style make this game feel very different to Far Cry 3,it’s the smart, often satirical dialogue between characters that will put the smile on your face.“If guns make me safe, then big guns make me safer”growls Rex as he picks up the Terror 4000 mini-gun.“He got the point,” he puns while stabbing a man through the chest with his knife. In addition to the stylish new look,Blood Dragon does add a few new gameplay elements to the Far Cry 3formula,the most significant of which are the titular Blood Dragons. These massive -rex style beasts roam the island (which is about half the size of FC3’s first landmass) attacking anything they find with teeth or massive laser beams that shoot from their eyes.

The Blood Dragons are one of only a handful of genuinely new features. Sure, all the weapons are different, but they’re just futuristic versions of Far Cry 3’s armoury. Even jeeps and jet-skis are largely the same, and the wildlife are just cyber versions of their real-life counterparts. We appreciate the fact that Ubi have tweaked the gameplay slightly to make Blood Dragon more immediately fun than Far Cry 3,so Rex can run much faster than Jason, most abilities are unlocked from the start, and you can fall from pretty much any height without losing health. It’s the best of both worlds: it looks like a fun retro game, but plays like a properly modern one. What it lacks in genuinely new features it more than makes up for in pure style, and although it controls in exactly the same way as Far Cry 3the setting makes the action feel fresh. The game itself may be gloriously silly, but we seriously advise you to give Blood Dragona try.

MOTOR

OPEL ADAM By Rachel Lynch

YOUWON’T

ADAM & EVE IT! It all started with BMW’s reinvention of the MINI

The exterior of the ADAM is clearly eye catching. It is the first car to feature the new Opel face.Framed by a lower and wider single grille, the newly proportioned brand bar carries the Opel logo and links to the chrome wing feature in the headlights. It also features round turn indicators alongside the grille.

This showed us in pretty dramatic fashion how popular a premium super MINI can be. Since then we have seen the Audi A1, Fiat 500 and the Citron DS3 take serious chunks out of the MINI’s sales. Now Opel will hope to add to MINI’s problems with their new fashionable andindividual Opel ADAM.

ADAM owes its distinct silhouette to the short bonnet, gently sloping roofline and fast-raked rear. The floating roof concept uses high gloss black elements that visually detach the roof from the body.Chrome trim underscores the distinct window shape and look like calligraphy strokes varying from thick to thin.

Opel have gone for a completely different look than other similar models on offer, instead of going retro inspired like most of its rivals it’s completely new and original, even the slightly unusual name makes it stand out.

And what better place to position the ADAM badge than on the fixed side glass that seamlessly flows into the rear window. The body side design conveys athleticism and precision using the signature blade in the lower door and iconic door handle feature linking the tail lamps.

You have a huge number of options with plenty of different combinations to make your ADAM unique. The trim levels are called Jam,Glam and Slam, with Slam being the top range model and Jam the base. Opel believes that their ADAM is the most customisable car you can buy by a long shot. There are countless exterior colour, wheel and trim combinations available plus inside the car the level of individualisation is impressive. The choice is yours, because you customise ADAM exactly how you want it.

A powerful yet economical 1.4i 16v engine is combined with a five speed manual transmission and Start/Stop technology, allowing you to look good and save fuel. Despite being so small and cute outside, the car still manages to offer a decent level of space inside. It is fresh and modern with a good deal of equipment and toys available, including a choice of roof linings. The driving and passenger seats are both spacious

and comfy. There is plenty of adjustment in the driver’s seat. Unfortunately the seating in the back is quite tight and it has a pretty small boot but it serves its purpose. Storage is more than adequate with cup holders, tray and glove box and not forgetting the large door bins. I was more than impressed with the drive of the ADAM and the steering was easy and light. There is a lot to like about the Opel ADAM, it’s not retro, it’s modern much like a smaller and cheaper Audi A1. That’s another great point: the price starting at just €14,995.00.The only problem you will have is which design do you choose?

Trinity to hold Traffic Management Expo ERTICO Europe has announced preliminary details of the ninth ITS European (Intelligent Transport Systems) Congress which Dublin city will host. The Congress will take place at the Convention Centre, Dublin Docklands from June.4-7. The Congress will bring approximately 1,800 participants to Dublin and is the biggest ITS event taking place in Europe in 2013. The highlight for many people will be the European Space Expo, an associated event of the ITS European Congress, which will be on display in Trinity College Front Square from June 4-9. This is the first time the European Space Association's European Space Expo has visited Dublin and the first time it's ever been at a university or college campus. The European Space Expo will feature an

The European Space Association expects Galileo will be fully operable by the end of the decade and says it will deliver real-time,down-to-themetre positioning in all but the most extreme circumstances. This makes it suitable for safetycritical applications like landing aircraft, guiding cars and running trains. ITS is used to make transport safer, more efficient and more sustainable. Dublin has many examples in everyday use. These include RTPI displays at bus stops, integrated ticketing schemes like LEAP, Dublin City Council's Traffic Control Centre and dublinbikes, the public bike hire scheme that has become a commuter choice in the capital.

THE DODDER By James O’Shaughnessy

HILL 880 By Michael J Whelan

The motorways go vrrroooming to every city’s end, Their thickening, trucking, traffic travelling thunderingly, But the pathways by the Dodder go gentle round each bend, And the pathways by the Dodder bring me …serenity.

(Irish UN position South Lebanon)

The Antarctic whales go spouting amid the eternal ice, The factory ships are threatening to exterminate their kind, But the troutrise of the Dodder makes the fisherman rejoice, And the troutrise of the Dodder rests easy on my mind. Full instrumented orchestras fill every concert hall, With symphonies and rhapsodies from Pole to very Pole, But the music of the Dodder is a silver waterfall, And the music of the Dodder goes… tumbling…through my soul. This poem was brought to our attention by James’s friend Christina. The late James was originally from Ayle, Oola Co. Tipperary. He lived a quarter of a mile from the Dodder from 1938 when he and Dilly got married until he died in 2000 at age 93. A walk along the Dodder was one of his favorite activities. He was secretary of the Castle Golf club poetry group for many years and always wrote the minutes of their meetings in rhyme.

Tonight, senses steeled against the black sky, we listen for the warring shadows. The storm is almost upon us. Bursts of coloured tracer attack the hill, bouncing over lost horizons. Phosphorous lights explode, illuminating battered landscapes of death. Below the thunder they cower in the dancing veil again and again. They who do battle here, fear this night also. But we who keep the middle ground will feel the vibrations of their vengeance. Our presence does not halt their conflict. Braced against the fury, we don our blue helmets, cursing, send prayers to mothers a thousand miles away. The ground trembles beneath our rising flares, burning red against the moonless heavens, “WE ARE HERE,WE ARE HERE. FIRING CLOSE, FIRING CLOSE.” Michael J. Whelan served as a peacekeeper with the Irish Army in South Lebanon and Kosovo. He was 2nd Place Winner of the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award in 2011 and selected for the Poetry Ireland Introductions Series in 2012. His poems and short stories have been published in Cyphers, Crannog and The Moth.

BOOKWORM HOW MANY FROGS? By Emer Cleary

Relatable chick lit with a heart of gold I first heard about my friend Emer’s debut novel last summer when she told me in strictest confidence in hushed tones that she’d written a book. I knew Emer as our talented editor but hadn’t realised she had literary apirations as well. How Many Frogsrolled off the presses at the start of this month and I’m delighted to say that I really enjoyed reading it.I started it on a Saturday morning and had finished it by Sunday evening. That’s not to say it’s a short book, just that I found myself so enthralled by Geri’s plight that I couldn’t stop reading all weekend. That’s a very good sign in my book (no pun intended!). I feel I should preface this review slightly with the fact that the only other chick lit I can remember reading were Helen Fielding’s iconic Bridget Jones’s Diary and its sequel The Edge Of Reason in my late teens. That’s not to say I’m averse to a good love story,I just haven’t found myself drawn to the genre before.

49 But enough about me, on to the book! I’ll let the synopsis blurb on the back speak for itself: “Geri can hardly believe it when she is landed right into the most mortifying of cliched situations after her long-term boyfriend,Tom,cheats on her with his secretary. With more than a bruised ego the heartbroken travel agent throws him out and attempts to deal with the fallout of losing her best friend and her dreams for the future all at the same time. Determined, however, not to wallow for too long her friends convince her to "get back on the horse" and, in doing so,back on the Dublin dating scene. With a scene however, that has changed since the days when a bloke bought you a drink at a bar and asked for a "shift",Geri is more than a little lost. Geraldine (or Geri as her friends call her) is a lovely character, warm and relatable and I instantly took to her. She’s 31 and not the slimmest or most glamourous of women, with understandable feelings and doubts about herself and the position she now finds herself in. “Tom’s a crap liar, always has been.”she says of her now ex-boyfriend at the start of the book, before following up with an amusing anecdote:“In fact, I met him mid-lie in a bar, when he had just been sprung by his boss in the middle of the day and was trying to convince her that he had a rotten ‘flu and was only there for a medicinial brandy.” Despite being recently heartbroken, Geri still talks about Tom as a recently ex-girlfriend would, fond but with a slight touch of bitterness. Geri still loves Tom, that much is clear, even if she now also hates him. These kind of realistic depictions of feelings and interpersonal relations are what makes How Many Frogs?areallyentertainingandabsorbingread.Youreally care about Geri and how her lovelife will turn out. Ger is surrounded by a cast of caring friends and a loving family consisting of her parents back in Kilkenny and her gay older brother Aaron who also lives in Dublin.Geri isn’t the only one trying to make her way in life or love and their subplots add a delightful depth to Geri’s story. One of my favourite characters wasYvonne, the‘office bitch”as Geri calls her. They work together in a travel agents and the little details like the fact that Claudia started a little while before Geri joined the company which apparently makes her a ‘senior member of staff’ and the love/hate of vicious bitchiness tempered with suprising kindness on both sides makes for an interesting dynamic.

I also loved the very Irishness of the whole book. It’s not just the Dublin location that makes it feel real. The tone and language depicts the Generation Y of young(ish) people transplanted from provinicial towns and cities to the big smoke of Dublin and their experiences in their new home town. I found it a captivating, fun read and I’d highly recommend giving it a try! BEAUTYWITH SKINKANDY but when they are repeated regularly scarring will reduce.

ACNE By Emer McGillion

Laser is also very effective and most likely the best solution for scarring.Frational lasers cause a micro injury deep inside the skin. The body goes into healing mode and will reproduce collagen and elastin. This will plump out any pitting, and with a series of treatments, skin will look smoother.

ACNE THE AFTERMATCH Recently I wrote an article about the curse of acne, how common it is among adults and useful ingredients found in products designed for acne. But what do you do when your acne clears up, and you are left with enlarged pores or pitting and scarring? Enlarged Pores Enlarged pores is such a common complaint among women, whether they ever experienced acne or not. But usually the person has suffered with oily skin at some stage in their life. The oil that is produced is thick and it stretches the opening of the pore, increasing the size. It is very difficult to reduce them completely but you can certainly reduce the appearance of them. The most successful way to see a reduction in pore size is by using products with fruit acids (AHA's).Using a glycolic cleanser,or a salicylic acid lotion will exfoliate and resurface the skin greatly. This will remove congestion and therefore reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. You will often hear people talk about toners and astringents to open and close pores. Don't be fooled by thinking a toner will "close" pores. The main function of a toner is to remove any excess cleanser that has been left on the skin. Astringents can temporarily cause swelling to the

pore but won't cause any long term effects.Pores - or the opening of the hair follice as it's also known - don't have muscles and can't swing open and closed like doors! There is a reason for some of the confusion. The use of hot water or steam will help loosen any congestion and clean out the pores but not change the size. A good tip for women when applying make-up is to avoid bronzer, or any blusher with reflective particles. They are great for giving that glow to the skin, but they also highlight enlarged pores and make them more obvious. Using a primer under your foundation will also greatly help to conceal the problem. Scarring & Pitting As if acne wasn't bad enough to deal with, sufferers can end up with scarring.Unfortunately, scarring or pitting is a sign of permanently damaged skin. Some people have worse scars than others but there is help! Although, it will be very difficult to reverse the damage altogether, there are treatments that can be done to soften them and make them less noticeable. Chemical peels are deep peeling agents that when applied to the skin, induce it to peel and skin will shed. The skin can appear red and uncomfortable. It doesn't sound particularly nice,

You've overcome the worst of acne now it's about reversing the damage it's caused. It's so important to remember to be patient with any treatment you choose to undergo. Nothing happens over night, but once you're on the right track, you'll start to notice the results you've been looking for. If you would like more information or advice you can contact me by phone (086 378 3516) or email (info@skinkandy.ie).

PREP,PLANT & MAINTAIN

BEAUTIFUL BASKETS

May is a good time to plant up a hanging basket or window box as all danger of frost should be gone Plant summer hanging baskets from April onwards, but they will need protection from frost until the middle or end of May. If you do not have a greenhouse, it is usually easier to plant in May once the frosts have passed. There are lots of plants that can be grown in baskets and window boxes, including annuals and small evergreen shrubs that will provide all-year-round interest. Instead of planting haphazardly why not choose a colour scheme such as pink or white flowers, or use reds and yellows. Though most baskets are planted in early spring and then put outside after the risk of frost has gone, they can also be planted in autumn and filled with frost hardy flowers and tough evergreens for colour over winter.

The best way to plant up baskets and boxes is first prepare your compost by putting a small amount of slow release fertiliser granules and some water-retaining gel crystals into multipurpose compost. Before adding any compost, mix in the water retaining gel. You'll need about the amount that would fill a 35mm film canister. The gel will swell up when it gets wet and will reduce the need for such frequent watering. Next, remove one of the hanging chains from a 30cm (12in) diameter or a 35cm (14in) wire hanging basket and make sure that the hanging chains are outside the basket and stand the basket on a empty flower pot to help keep it steady, then cover the inside of the basket with a coconut fibre liner, sphagnum moss, or wool fleece with black plastic on top, you can buy bags of dried moss from nurseries and garden centres, but give it a good soak before using it.As the basket matures, the moss will turn green and will blend well with the foliage of the plants. To help prevent too much water from escaping, cut around the edges where it overlaps the basket, making sure none of the black plastic is visible. Cut small slits in the plastic and then select plants for the sides of the basket. To help prevent damage to roots and stems of the bedding plants separately wrap each in a tube of paper.

VAT registered & Fully Insured

Call 087 243 4211 or 01 452 3979 From the inside of the basket, push the tube through one of the holes until the root ball is secure against the liner. Unwrap the paper and add the other plants. Firm the compost around the root balls. Adding this bottom layer of plants will help to give the basket that ball-like-mass-of-flowers look when it gets going. Add layers of plants. Fill two thirds of the basket with compost and then add another layer of plants. Continue to fill with compost, leave a 3cm (0.75in) gap between the top of the compost and the lip of the basket, and finish by planting the top.Water well. Aftercare Put outside when all risk of frost has passed. Water daily, especially during warm weather, even if it has rained. Aim to keep the compost moist but not soggy, and avoid wetting the foliage and flowers. Deadhead spent flowers from your baskets twice a week to help encourage plants to produce a progression of flowers. Boost plants with a weekly liquid feed.

FITNESS

ABDOMINALS By Ben Campbell (Gym Magazine)

ABLIVION

TO AND BEYOND! Some would argue that doing heavy compound exercises like the deadlift, overhead press and back squat are great ways to build up your core muscles, and they have a point. Your core makes sure your back is kept upright in a safe position while you drive up through a squat and keeping your abdominal muscles drawn in and engaged helps to avoid hyperextension of the spine during an overhead press. Although your abdominal muscles are engaged throughout these exercises, they don’t necessarily translate into “six pack abs”. In this case we are talking about direct training of the rectus abdominis and external oblique. When these muscles are worked directly, you will benefit not only in terms of aesthetics, but also for injury prevention and aiding in your other big lifts. So get ready for the following routine, because you may just experience for the first time what it is like to really work your abs. Exercise One: Ab Wheel Rollouts Exercising with this simple piece of equipment is a sure-fire way to see an explosion in your core strength and develop insane abdominals. Although it involves using other muscles of the upper body such as your arms and lats, your abdominal musculature will really be put to work throughout this exercise.

There are a couple of ways this exercise can be performed; beginning on your knees or the progression, standing. Step one: Kneel down and hold the ab wheel centered in front of you on the floor. Step two: Keeping your back slightly arched and abs drawn in, slowly roll the ab wheel out in front of you across the floor until your hips begin to extend and your arms reach out in front of you. It is important to only roll out as far as is comfortable to avoid injury. You should feel your abdominal muscles being stretched as you roll out. Step three:Using your core, slowly return the ab wheel to the starting position. You should feel your abdominal muscles contracting as you do so. Repeat this exercise for as many repetitions as you are capable of doing without compromising form. If you are comfortable doing 15 repetitions you may consider progressing to the standing variation of this exercise Exercise Two: Ball Crunches Although this may seem like a pretty basic exercise, it is great exercise for isolating the abs nonetheless. Performing this exercise strictly, using only your abdominal musculature to pull your chest towards your knees, will leave you feeling pumped and exhausted.

Step one: Lie back onto the exercise ball so that it is comfortably placed underneath your lower back. Place your feet firmly on the floor at about shoulder width apart. Step two: With your hands at the side of your head, contract your abdominal muscles and crunch forward so that your chest and pelvis move closer together. Step three: Return to starting position slowly and repeat for 10-15 repetitions. Exercise Three: (superset with exercise two): Seated Medicine Ball Trunk Rotations. Step one: Sit on the floor with your legs out in front of you and with a slight bend at the knees. Step two: Lean back ever so slightly to engage your core. Step three: Holding a medicine ball in both hands, slowly rotate your trunk so that the ball is moved over to one side of your body, before pausing, and then moving the ball over to the other side of your body. Do this continually for 20 reps. You should be focusing on using your oblique muscles to rotate your body rather than throwing the ball from side to side with your arms. Now that is a core workout that will add both strength and size to your abs and obliques, not only will they look good, but the additional stability will aid you when performing the heavier compound movements that are essential for a great physique.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Tallaght Community School in South Dublin Cup

Double Silverware for Terenure FC Over a period of nine days Terenure Men’s teams have picked up two pieces of silverware with the promise of more to come. First up was the Men’s First team who won the UCFL Challenge Cup, beating Sportslink Ailesbury in the Final in Home Farm FC by an impressive 5-1 score line. The team, under the management of James Claffey, put on a magnificent performance on the day to deservedly win the UCFL’s premier cup competition. Not to be outdone by their club mates, nine days later Terenure Men’s Second Team were in the UCFL 2A Shield final against Castle Celtic FC in the VEC grounds. Terenure under the management of Tom Hogan, battled hard against a very good Castle Celtic side and after 110 minutes both teams were still deadlocked at nil all. The penalty shootout proved to be of very high quality with Terenure eventually winning out 5-4 to secure the trophy. With the season coming near the end it looks certain that this will not be the only silverware making its way to Terenure this year. With the UCFL Premier Shield yet to be decided and Terenure’s First team currently leading the UCFL Premier division, the future of Men’s Football in Terenure is looking very good. New members are always welcome. For more information visit their webpage: www.terenurefc.com

The final of the South Dublin Cup took place in St. Mary’s College RFC on Friday 12 April. This was to be the final chapter in a long season for the senior rugby team.Early in the season the team struggled with low attendances at training, but as the wins began to accumulate the numbers and attitude at training significantly changed. The team were unlucky to lose out to a very physical team from Bagenalstown in the semifinal of the Leinster Senior Development Cup despite a very brave resurgence in the final quarter and ended up trailing by a single score come the final whistle. Following this narrow defeat, the team were determined to make the final of the South Dublin Cup.The appearance of the Heineken Cup trophy at the school the day before the final, gave further impetus to the excitement and determination of the team. Friday April 12 was a cold, dry day, perfect conditions for a game of rugby. St. Mary’s College RFC saw large numbers of Tallaght Community School supporters, students, teachers, families and friends, in addition to past pupils. The Tallaght Community School supporters considerably dwarfed those of St. Colmcilles Community School. Colmcilles opened the scoring with a converted try close to the post after a period of sustained pressure. The match was levelled by Epey Mutanga who cut the Colmcilles defensive line in half following a perfectly weighted pass from Adam Notaro. Colmcilles took the lead again with another converted try. Shortly afterwards Tallaght Community School worked their way into the Colmcilles 22. Multiple advances by the Tallaght Community School pack resulted in a series of penalties which culminated in

Gareth McGinn levelling the score with a try converted by Eoghan Farrell. With the scores tied at 14 all, and the tension very high, Tallaght Community School were very unlucky to have a try disallowed in the final quarter of the game. The game looked destined to be drawn and the Cup shared but with 1 minute left on the game clock, Colmcilles broke through the defensive line for the inevitable winning try. The team showed true character and mental strength as they continued to battle for a draw in the dying seconds of the game. They were valiant in their efforts and never looked like a team beaten. Tallaght were gracious in defeat and despite the difficult nature of the loss, valuable lessons were learned and a gauntlet thrown down for all following rugby teams that will wear the Tallaght Community School jersey in the future. The Tallaght school crowd were unrivalled in their support and were a tribute to the school. The school are very proud of their senior rugby team and the final will be remembered for years to come.

TRFC Youths: Win, Lose and Draw StThomas Camogie move into Division Two After having two fantastic years of winning the Division Three championship in 2011/2012 and representing Dublin in Leinster last year Thomas Davis Senior Camogie team are now in Division Two. The girls are being put through their paces on the training field twice a week to meet the high standard that is required for this Division. This is a small panel with numerous past and present county camogie players that bring great quality to the squad; they also have eight dual players representing the club’s ladies football section. The Kiltipper based outfit have just finished their league campaign having been narrowly beaten in some games. The performances have seen Alison McGrath and Ciara Long being called up to the Dublin squad. The main focus over the next few months for the girls and management is the Championship. The future looks bright for the camogie section in Thomas Davis with an increase in the number of teams the club is now fielding at juvenile levels. The under 15s are currently unbeaten in their league and the under 14s reached the semi-finals of the Feile competition. The club is always on the lookout for new players of any age from five upwards or players who may have played before and would like to return to the sport. If you would like to get involved with camogie contact Derek Tyrell who is Chairman of the camogie section on 086 225 2536.

The Tallaght Rugby Youths team took another step forward after playing very welcoming and accommodating De La Salle Palmerstown rugby teams.Tallaght were invited to play the DLSP teams in Kirwan Park, Kilternan. DLSP fielded 3 teams and the Tallaght youths graciously played 3 matches against the 3 teams. With rolling subs and a very dedicated team all the youths took to the pitches. Tallaght started slowly trying to find their feet and went behind in the first game. DLSP showed their skill in running and passing and took the lead at half time.More tries brought the game to a dramatic end with Tallaght earning a draw. The second game brought a tougher test for the Tallaght Youths.Straight from the kick off DLSP put the Tallaght team under pressure. With all of team working hard it allowed Kayleigh Preston go over from a pass off the bottom of a ruck to register Tallaght youth’s first female try this year. Tallaght fought hard but could not stop a very good DLSP from taking the spoils. The third game came and a tiring Tallaght team stepped up to answer the call. Tallaght’s first win was fantastic, the coaches, supporters and players were over the moon and it made a great day for all there. All new players boys and girls are welcome and training takes place on Sunday mornings at 11am in Ballymana Lane. Please contact Philip on 085 737 1926for more information. Proudly Sponsored By

INROVERS MAGAZINE

Setanta Cup Win By Padraig Conlon

ROVERS faced Drogheda United in the first contest for silverware of the season as The Hoops recorded an emphatic 7-1 win to claim the SetantaCup in record breaking style at Tallaght Stadium

On a day which saw all four seasons in one match, lightning was about the only weather condition the players didn’t have to contend with as the wind, rain and sleet battered Tallaght Stadium. The sides entered the fray in front of a watching President Higgins and a crowd of 4,022. No one could have foreseen the slaughter that was to come.

Most people had predicted a very tense and tight match after the sides had played out a 1-1 draw last month in Tallaght. As well as this both teams had an identical points total in the league.

Just as when it seemed Drogheda were getting themselves back into the contestThe Hoops landed the knockout blow just before half time. Ronan Finn’s defence splitting through ball found Karl Sheppard in acres of space and he duly applied the finish past Sava.

The Louthmen had been the only team to win the competition twice, lifting the trophy in consecutive seasons in 2006 and 2007. Rovers had just one solitary win and hadn’t even competed in the tournament in the years that Drogheda had won it. Whispers of revenge could be heard in the Tallaght air as Rovers set about settling the score from last year’s League Cup Final when Drogheda came to town and mugged The Hoops in their own back yard, making off up the road with both the cup and the bragging rights.Could lightning strike twice?

From the minute referee Rob Rogers blew his whistle Rovers showed the greater desire and Pat Sullivan forced Sava into a save in the opening exchanges. The Hoops didn’t have to wait long to land the first blow, although there was a hint of fortune about their twelfth minute opener as Ryan Brennan met Sean O’Connor’s cross but his header came back off James Chambers and looped into the Drogheda net.Two minutes later Rovers doubled their lead as Sean O’Connor scored from a tight angle to put his side firmly in the drivers seat.

Rovers went in at half time knowing they had one hand on the trophy, their three goal lead no more than they deserved for putting in a vastly superior 45 minutes than their hapless opponents. If Drogheda thought they had any chance of a miraculous comeback those thoughts were firmly put to bed ten minutes into the second half as man of the match Ronan Finn scored twice in the space of a minute.

InTallaght_NEW_iPAD_ED_Layout 1 15/05/2013 19:10 Page 59

59 His first came via the post after he’d drilled a shot from just outside the penalty area. His second was a thing of beauty as he tiptoed through the Drogheda defence before finishing in the far corner. Drogheda to their credit tried their best to stem the tide and they managed to pull one back through Gary O’Neill. What a contrast for the ex Hoop from his last appearance in a Setanta Cup Final when he scored the opener in Rovers 2011 victory against Dundalk. The final was already a demolition job before Billy Dennehy turned it into a turkey shoot by plundering two more goals to send the Rovers faithful into raptures.A second All Ireland title for Rovers and a first piece of silverware for Trevor Croly capped off a very memorable day. Never in recent memory has a final in this country been turned into such a rout, and many connected with The Hoops will say someone was going to get a hammering like this off Rovers sooner or later. Whether this victory, and the manner of it,will spur Rovers on for a title challenge remains to be seen. Certainly seasons can hinge on moments like this and with the taste for success regained who’s to say The Hoops can’t now go on a big run in the league.

MARK LYNCH is Marketing Director at Rovers. InTallaght spoke to him after their win “It was a great win,it’s a perfect reward for the players at this time of the season. It can encourage them to go and keep performing and try and win more trophies.

SEAN O’CONNOR delighted with first medal of the season “Winning this means a lot to me because it’s the first time I’ve won the Setanta Cup, the only other medal I had was a league championship medal. I’m buzzing. The reason I signed for the club was to win medals, hopefully I can now go on and win some more. “It’s great for everyone involved with the club as it gives the whole place a lift. Our performances in the Setanta Cup have been brilliant this season, we just have to carry that form into our league games now.

“We couldn’t celebrate after the game because we had the game with Pats coming up and the manager had us in at 9.30 on Sunday morning at the Stadium for a warm down session. “Obviously we didn’t expect to win by such a big score.I was delighted to get a goal myself, it’s only my 3rd of the season, I’d like to get a few more! “Hopefully winning the Setanta Cup can give us a lift for the rest of the season, that’s the word coming out of the camp. Confidence is sky high, everyone is buzzing. “We need to improve results in the league though, we’ve had far too many draws. Sligo and Derry have slipped up a bit recently so we have to take advantage of that now.”

“For us fans it’s great to see the team win a cup for the first time in a couple of years. I know we won the Leinster Senior Cup last year but it’s not a major trophy. It’s fantastic to be back winning trophies again. “Financially it’s also very welcome and very positive news for all involved with the club. “The margin of the victory was not what we expected and was very impressive. It showed that Trevor and the squad are capable of putting in excellent performances for the rest of the season.”

Congratulations to Claire Malone who was the winner of our Setanta Cup Final VIP Competition. She won match tickets,a stay in The Abberly Court, lunch at The Kitchen, a €50 Square Gift Card and a commemorative photo pack.
