Strictly Come Dancing for WALK fundraiser CitywiseLadswinagain! The SAP Citywise team from Jobstown did Tallaght proud again by recently scooping one of the top awards at the Open European Championships of the First Lego League Robotics Tournament in Germany. The team not only designed and built a Lego robot but also developed an app to remind older people to take vital medicines. They beat 52 teams from 34 countries around the world to win the Gracious Professional Awardfor their team spirit. The competition was split into three parts. The Robot Game involved designing, building and testing a robot. For the project section teams developed solutions to improve the quality of life for senior citizens by helping them remain independent, and connected in their communities. Finally, the boys were judged on core values, their teamwork and professionalism throughout the competition. Since they won the Irish title in January the lads have worked hard to improve their robot design. For their project they developed a voice recognition app which will remind older people of their engagements, appointments and even when to take their medicine. But what really impressed the judges was the way the lads worked together, their continual good spirit and their good humour despite the pressure of competition. Citywise team coordinator Christopher Smith is very proud of the team’s achievement: “The standard was extraordinarily high and we were delighted that the judges acknowledged the
professionalism of our approach. To win one of the top eleven categories was a great credit to the hard work and dedication the boys put in over the past five months,” he said. The Tallaght schoolboys were the only Irish team in the competition in Paderborn, Germany. The overall Champions’ Award went to a team from Brazil, while teams from Israel and Germany came second and third.Teams travelled from all over the globe including the USA, China, Australia, Japan and South Korea for the contest. One of the team Himanshu Singh, 16, said:“The standard of the robot section was very high. There were teams from China, Brazil and UK whose robots were extremely advanced. But we learned a lot for next year’s competition.” Fergus Gloster, European managing director of Marketo, who teaches maths once a week at the Citywise centre commented,“This reward is an international recognition of the contribution by Citywise to enhancing the educational needs of our young teenagers. With the correct help and focus Citywise has shown that Irish teenagers can operate at the highest levels.” The Citywise team was sponsored by SAP Ireland and staff from there helped in their training over the past year. The competition was attended by a number of the company’s top management. SAP employs over 1,200 people in Ireland, including in the Citywest Business campus, and provides software solutions to many of the top businesses in Ireland. Visit www.citywise.ie for more details.

Mayor Cathal King SDCC Pictured With Council Staff (Environment), Members Of The Welfare Crew And IT Tallaght Student Union At The Launch In IT Tallaght This Month
Year two of the renewed three-year Gum Litter Taskforce campaign launched in Tallaght IT by Mayor Cathal King The campaign aims to reduce gum litter by raising awareness amongst the public that dropping gum on the ground is littering and carries a €150 fine. The GLT campaign encourages the public to dispose of their used gum responsibly. Speaking at the launch, Mayor of South Dublin County, Councillor Cathal King said “ I am delighted to launch the Anti Gum Litter Campaign here in the IT Tallaght. It is wonderful to see the involvement of the Students Union here to highlight the blight of gum litter.“ The theme of the 2012-2014 advertising campaign is “Bin It Your Way” and it features a series of professionally choreographed and highly innovative dance moves which communicate the responsible disposal of gum litter in an engaging way.
The campaign also includes: ● A four month mass media advertising campaign (TV, outdoor, print and online). ● A schools education programme aimed at first and second year secondary school students called “Bin It!” This includes an actor-led workshop tour which take place in schools each autumn and which is supported by materials and tools for teachers to download and integrate into lesson plans. (www.chewitbinit.com) ● A dedicated website www.gumlittertaskforce.ie and Facebook page www.facebook.com/binityourway ● Distribution of Point-of-Sale materials to over 1,000 retailers around the country. ● Litter monitoring by local authorities to assess how much littered gum is reduced on- streets as a result of the campaign. ● Sponsorship of three awards in the TidyTowns competition. Last year the GLT campaign achieved a 28% reduction in gum litter nationally. A nationwide on-street attitudes and awareness survey also showed there was a significant improvement in public perception, with gum that is irresponsibly disposed, clearly viewed as ‘litter’ by those surveyed.
GLT Chairman Mr Paul Kelly welcomed the significant increase in Local Authority uptake this year.“Local authority involvement is absolutely critical to the success of the campaign.I look forward to working closely with them to make the campaign a success. We were delighted with the results of the 2012 GLT campaign as it achieved its main goals of reducing the overall level of gum litter on our streets and promoting a change in the culture and attitude towards gum litter.”added Mr Kelly.

FOCUS ON
CAMARA By Linn Heldal
Your old computer equipment can help give 21 school children digital literacy skills by taking on a new life in Africa, the Caribbean,or even in Ireland. This can be done in a secure and eco-friendly way with a local social enterprise called Camara Education. Camara is dedicated to reusing donated computer equipment to improve education and livelihood skills in disadvantaged communities around the World. Reuse is better than recycling as it reduces the environmental impact and helps create an affordable supply. They were founded seven years ago in Dublin and continue to grow, with a presence in the UK and USA being recently established. Since 2005 they have shipped out over 40,000 computers, which
has helped more than 500,000 children become digitally literate. This is achieved through people and businesses donating their old computer equipment to Camara, either by bringing them in to one of their many drop off locations around the Country or by arranging a collection. All equipment is processed in the workshop in their HQ in Chapelizod, Dublin 20. “We track all computers that people give us. All computers are diagnostically tested to see if they work and the data is then securely wiped. We are also an authorised Microsoft Refurbisher. Many fear that someone may get access to their data when they donate a computer, we can assure you that absolutely all data is destroyed and nobody can get information out of your computer, not even the CIA! At no stage is the data accessed.”Frank Neenan,Production Manager at Camara, explained. Any equipment that cannot be reused is stripped for reusable parts. The remains go to a local authorised recycling facility.“A new operating system,Wikipedia and educational software is then loaded to the computers. It starts with simple games, which will teach the children how to use the computer. It then works its way up to more complex mathematical and spelling games, right
up to Open Office. It will take an average of 35 hours training, for a child that has never used a computer before, to do a basic spread sheet and presentation. That’s the minimum level we want to get them to.Being able to open a spread sheet and write your CV on a computer are major advantages in today’s world.” The computers are then cleaned, rechecked, packed and shipped to one of their distribution Hubs. Camara has Hubs in eight countries in Africa and the Caribbean, as well as supplying many Irish schools and youth groups. The word Camara means ‘teacher’ in West Africa - and teaching is really what Camara is about. They have provided training to 11,000 teachers in 2,000 schools. “The real work starts when we get the computers out to the schools. We have to assess the schools, assist them with setting an eLearning Centre up and most importantly train the teachers. We consider the work we do in Chapelizod with the computers as 10% of the work, with 90% being the training of the teachers and ongoing support to them.” The computers and training programme are‘sold’ to the schools for a symbolic fee. Camara also helps with fundraising for the poorest schools that cannot afford the cost of an eLearning
InTallaghtMaster37_Layout 1 05/06/2013 15:30 Page 13
13 Centre. Before the schools get the computers, they have to sign a contract with Camara, where they agree to look after the equipment and that at least five teachers from each school will undergo training with Camara. “We spend a lot of time in the training room at our distribution centres getting the teachers up to speed on the computers. We have staff on the ground in the countries that we operate in,so we do training all year round. We also provide technical support.” The contract also ensures that at the end of the computer equipment’s useful life, it is returned to its local Hub so that it can be recycled at a local recycling facility approved by Camara. Regular check-ups are completed in the schools where equipment was provided.“The last thing we want to come back to is to see all the computers in perfect working order, locked in a room. I’d much rather come back to trashed computers that have been well used by the children to learn!” Numerous large professional corporations in Ireland like Dell,Diageo,Electric Ireland,Bord Gáis, PWC and Salesforce regularly donate equipment to them. “Once people understand technically what we’re doing and that there are no risks involved, they are happy to get on board and give us computer equipment. There are no loose ends with what we’re doing.” Camara are partly funded by Irish Aid and donations from companies/private individuals who want to support their work.
One of the countries Camara works in is right here - Ireland. The Camara Ireland program works with schools, youth and community centres, supplying low cost teacher training and computers. Camara Ireland has supplied over 2,000 computers to educational organisations and trained over 750 teachers and youth workers. In the Tallaght area Camara Ireland has provided computers and teacher training to St. Aidans in Brookfield, St. Martin de Porres, The Big Picture Youth Cafe and a number of others. Camara has won prestigious awards for their work, the most recent one being an ICT Excellence Award for the most innovative use of technology in education / training. They want to increase the amount of computers they ship out, which can only be achieved by getting more computer equipment donations. “Last year we shipped about 9,500 computers. We estimate that there are over 500,000 computers each year in Ireland that could be reused rather than recycled. This year we are hoping to ship out 12,000.To do this we need to take in at least 26,000 computers. We are in dire need of computer equipment at the moment and would be very grateful for any support we can get from the Tallaght community.” If you have computer equipment to give to Camara, ideally they would like you to drop it off at their facility in Chapelizod Industrial Estate. Camara does not have in-house transport, but collections can be arranged at a low cost.Further details can be found on www.camara.org or you can call 01 6522673 to discuss.

INTERVIEW We recorded it over seven weeks last year in different studios because we were so busy touring. We spent three weeks in Worcester at Vale Studios, Longford,Yorkshire,Wales then finished in Birmingham where we live, in Highbury Studio with a friend of ours called John Mostyn. We got it finished just in time for Christmas.
KODALINE By Padraig Conlon
What is your own favourite track off it? It All Comes Down To You”, it’s one of our oldest songs, when we play it live the reaction to it is always amazing with people singing it back.Way Back When as well. We put everything into this album and we hope people love it.The feedback from people who’ve heard it live has been great.
KODALINE are another Dublin band making massive strides in the music world. The group is made up of four lads from Swords: Stephen Garrigan (lead singer) Mark Prendergast (Lead guitar) Vinny May (Drums) and Jason Boland (Bass). They started out life as 21 Demandsand got their first taste of publicity on RTE show You’re a Star in 2007, finishing as runners up. They then became the first ever unsigned band to score a number one hit in Ireland with Give Me A Minute before disappearing from view until they came back in 2011 with a new name and a totally different musical style. In just two years the childhood friends who dreamed of making it big have travelled the world, had one of their songs used in Grey’s Anatomy and built up a massive fan base which has made them so in demand they are about to embark on a tour which will last until March 2014. If they keep making progress at the rate they’ve been going so far,by the end of this year Kodaline could be one of the biggest bands in the world. In the last few months they were shortlisted on the BBC's Sound of 2013poll,came in the top four in the MTV Brand New For 2013competition and provided the sound track for Google’s Zeitgeist 2012: Year in Review Ad.
Their debut track All I Want sold almost 100,000 copies and was backed up by a stunning video, which has so far racked up nearly two million hits on YouTube.Their single High Hopesalso recently went to No 1 in Ireland. Now their debut album, In a Perfect World is out this month and we were lucky enough to chat to guitarist Mark Prendergast recently to find out more about Ireland’s latest musical success story.
So Mark, your new album is out next week, could you tell us about it? Yes it’s called In A Perfect World and it’s basically just our favourite songs that we’ve written over the past two or three years. For people who have listened to us before, I think there’ll be a few surprises. We’re dead proud of it; I can’t wait for it to be out.
Is it true you met The Pixies while recording it? Yes that’s right we did. We were recording in Rockfield Studios in Wales,a really famous studio where loads of legend bands like Oasis, Stone Roses and Coldplay have recorded. We were in studio 2, which is the smaller one, they were in studio 1. They started really early every morning, we’d be up having our breakfast and we could hear them already in their studio. They were really nice guys. One night the lads were out having a smoke with Frank Black, who was dressed in shorts and a vest and it was freezing! He was really nice.We tried to play it as cool as possible but we were all really excited to meet them.
Could you tell our readers how you guys got together? Me and Steve (Garrigan lead singer) met when we were eight years old in Primary School in Swords. We met the drummer Vinny through skateboarding when we were about 15, and we met Jason the bassist last year.
InTallaghtMaster37_Layout 1 05/06/2013 15:30 Page 15
15 How would you describe your sound? We let other people do that, I suppose if I had to describe it I would probably say Indie Alternative. Some people have called it“Desperate Romantic!”
How would you describe the reaction to you guys? The reaction has been crazy considering we’ve only been going two years and we only played our first show last August at Indiependence in Cork. Now we’re going to be going back there this summer higher up the bill. We did an open mic night in the Workman’s last night and the place was packed. It’s weird that people love us! We even have fans in places like Australia!
Why do you think you guys are so popular? Probably because we’re Irish, to be honest with you. Once an Irish band does well the whole country seems to get behind them.Home grown talent is really appreciated in this country.
What bands influenced you? We’re influenced by a lot of bands, but we sound nothing like the bands were influenced by,bands like Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Daft Punk, Sam Cooke. We’re all huge Beatles fans as well.
What do you think of the new Daft Punk Album? I love it. It’s quite a mixed bag, it’s got everything from great chilled out tracks to funk. I know it’s got mixed reviews but I think it’s brilliant. We

18 were over in France recently and found out that Phoenix, Daft Punk and Air are all from the same place,Versailles.I don’t know what they’re putting in the water there! We’d love to work with Daft Punk but they’d probably never work with us.
with us so they can get a feel for what it’s like. Every few months something happens though that has me thinking “What the f*ck is going on?!!”Even this morning I woke up,turned on the radio and we were on the radio, it’s so weird!
to us, we let him go with it and we loved it.
How did Grey’s Anatomyend up using your song All I Wantin it’s latest season?
Our parents are enjoying it all, they’re the proudest parents on the planet, they come to every show. That’s another reason why I’m so looking forward to the Olympia shows because so many of our family and friends will be there.
is lovely.
We went to the US in August last year. We were just playing a small acoustic set in a place in New York and someone from Grey’s Anatomy was in the crowd and came up to us after and asked could they use it. None of us watches the show but our sisters were all freaking out about it!
What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far? Selling out the three Olympia Shows for next November. It was always in the back of our minds to do a homecoming type show and to get to do it in the Olympia is going to be amazing. We couldn’t believe those shows sold out in three minutes. We did a show in France recently and we had the crowd singing back to us, it’s nice to see that,it’s so crazy that people around the world have heard of us.
Have there been any funny things What do your parents happen on the road? of cakes! A lot of fans who make of your success? Yescomea few!to ourWe getshowsa lotmake cakes for us, which
Do you enjoy living in Birmingham? Yes we do, although we don’t get to spend too much time there as we’re usually touring. We moved over there about eight months ago and now its our home away from home. It’s so handy for touring and travelling as well.
You guys have a very busy summer ahead of you… Yes we have,we’re booked up with gigs until next March, this summer is going to be huge, we’re playing some great festivals like Glastonbury,The Isle Of Wight, Pink Pop and Longitude, which is going to be cool. There’s going to be magic about!
Your videos are all Has your life changed amazing, top quality much in the last stuff,do you guys two years? have much input No it hasn’t really changed at all. I’m still doing into them? normal things like going down to the Pavillion Shopping Centre to buy socks. Actually that’s what I’m on my way to do right now! We still hang out with the same friends as we have for years. We usually bring one of our friends on tour
The videos are done by some very talented friends of ours. Our main video for All I Want was done by a friend of ours, Stevie Russell, he dreamed up the idea in his head and pitched it
Last year when we were in America supporting The Airborne Toxic Event. We were playing a gig in Washington and there was a girl there who’d sold her bed and travelled over 1000 miles to see us! We told her she should have just contacted us and we would have given her a free ticket, there was no need to sell the bed!
What do you think of the Irish music scene at the moment? I think it’s blooming at the moment, there’s so many great Irish bands. Tandem Felix, All My Friends,Delorentos,Coronas,Little Green Cars,The Strypes, Bressie. It’s great that so many of them will be playing at the big festivals this summer as well.
Finally Mark, where would you like to be in five years time? I’d still like to be putting out albums, still travelling the world still able to tour. I hope we’ll be putting out albums until we die! In A Perfect World is released on Friday June 14 For more on the band and to keep up to date with tour dates and releases, check out their website: www.kodaline.com

MEETING I started music lessons and playing the piano at 4 and wrote my first song at 8.
FLAVIA & THE RED By Linn Heldal
You describe your band as a family, how did you end up with the current line-up? I started the band in the summer of 2010 and we’ve had many different line-ups.The interesting story about our bass player is that he was the bass player in the competing band at Summerfest, the band that actually won.
L.A based band Flavia and the Red recently released their debut album Too Late to Cry, which has received great reviews. Last year they were chosen from hundreds of bands to perform at Summerfest in Wisconsin, The World’s Largest Music Festival, where they won 2nd place at the ‘Land the Big Gig ‘competition. Singer and front woman Flavia Watson (21) grew up in Dublin, but moved to Los Angeles at 18 to pursue the dream. She was recently back in the old country for a visit and InTallaght Magazine caught up with her for a chat.
So Flavia, you grew up in Dublin, what made you decide to go for it and move to the States to follow your dream of making it as a musician? My family is spread out through Europe, so I just packed my bags and went off to college in Los Angeles when I was 18. In the beginning I was kind of a Lone Wolf in L.A and I had to try to make things happen for myself. I’m studying in a
performing arts college, so I’m around tons of other musicians, which is very inspiring. I love Ireland and my personality is very Irish.Ireland is my home and my favourite place to be, but for music there is really no place like L.A.
It’s a funny story, we thought ‘Well if they’re gonna win the competition we’re gonna steal their bass player.’When he joined the band it was like something clicked, it feels like Summerfest in the big picture was to meet him.The band now consists of Chris Pucher on guitar, Isaac Watts on drums, Rich Brown on keys and Max Benson on bass. This is our core group, which I hope will never change.
The band’s name is very interesting, tell us what‘Red’means? For me the colour red signifies everything we’d like to portray in our music:Fire,Passion and Love.

Hairspray is the No.1 supplier of hair extensions in Ireland They first opened their doors to the public in November 2006 and since then, the company has gone from strength to strength and now have five stores around Dublin. They stock top quality brands like Spanish Hair, Hairdo and their famous own range of Hairspray products. They also sell a full range of salon services, which include brand name hair colours like Wella Koleston and L'Oréal Majirel, as well as hairbrushes, Revlon Colour Bombs and wraps.
Hairspray is pink and it’s fluffy – what we want is for people to walk in to the shop and think that this is fun and a breath of fresh air.” The store at the Square stocks all Hairspray products and will have a hair extensions salon open to the customers before the end of June. All of the Hairspray salon teams have been trained to the highest standard at their famous Hair Extensions Academy. They are a 100% Irish owned brand and were created by director Warren Logan.“The concept of Hairspray is that girls that are going out at the weekend, or to an event, can add something to their evening by coming to the store and buy some affordable products, whether it’s clip in hair extensions, ponytails, nails or eyelashes.”Warren explained.

CINEMA
MAN OF STEEL By Rachel Lynch
We have a number of big blockbusters to look forward to this summer and Man of Steelcomes close to the top of the list Man of Steel is an upcoming 2013 American superhero film directed by Zack Snyder, and produced by Christopher Nolan. Based on the DC Comics character Superman, the film will be a reboot of the Superman film series, portraying the character's origin story. The film stars Henry Cavill in the title role, with Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White and Russell Crowe as Jor-El. Man of Steel will launch a shared fictional universe of DC Comics characters on film. Clark Kent is a journalist who was adopted as a child by Jonathan and Martha Kent after he was transported to Earth from the dying planet of
Krypton. Raised with the values of his adoptive parents, he feels alienated because of his unique super powers and struggles to find his own place in life. When the world is attacked, he becomes the hero named Superman to protect Earth and its people. Judging by the trailer director Zack Snyder has pulled out all the stops to deliver what critics have prematurely branded movie of the year. Music has been a huge talking point surrounding the trailer, at times slow and emotional, and at others sweeping and epic. To completely distinguish Man of Steel from the previous films, the iconic Superman Marchby John Williams will not be heard. Instead, the legendary Hans Zimmer has composed the film’s score. The fact the film is available in 3D excites me.One can only imagine how well some of the scenes will play out on screen. The trailer provided us with a sneak peek into the action that is both slow and fast which gives an effect of something superhuman occurring. It really does feel like the first time Superman has been done justice in live action. I hope the movie lives up to the ‘movie of the year’tagline, because the character has such a lot of potential, especially when stripped back to the beginning of his familiar narrative.

THE LAST EXORCISM PART 2 By Rachel Lynch
The Last Exorcism Part 2picks up from where Part 1left off This time unlike Part 1 we are treated to a traditional third-person point of view as opposed to the documentary style we witnessed in the first movie. The morning after the baffling events at the Sweetzer farmhouse, a random couple wakes to find a terrified Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) inhabiting their kitchen.Completely traumatized, Nell can't remember entire portions of the previous months, only that she is the last surviving member of her family. She tries to start a new life and initially seems to be making great progress out in the world she knows little or nothing about, until it all changes. Nell starts to experience her strange dreams turn into waking hallucinations, making her question whether her delusions were anything but. She knows something is very wrong and a dark evil is closing in on her, entirely beyond her control. The evil force that once possessed Nell is back to haunt her and has more devastating plans in mind this time round, the exorcism was just the start of the nightmare that unfolds.
Overall this is the type of movie to entertain and scare you, in my opinion it does both. From the trailers alone it is clear that if you are a fan of horror then The Last Exorcism Part 2is a must see. If you liked the first film you will love Part 2. It’s not the horror movie of the year, but it’s certainly enjoyable. Horror fanatics will say it is unoriginal and delivers nothing new, but that said there is still an interesting story line to this film, with plenty of jumpy scares.

34 AFTER EARTH By Rachel Lynch
Will Smith again stars alongside his son Jaden in new this futuristic action film
terrain, coming across evolved animals that now dominate the planet, as well as an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash, to signal for help.As his father lies dying in the cockpit, 13-year-old Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father.Today, he gets his chance.
The story begins in the near future, after humanity abandoned Earth after cataclysmic events, they re-established society on the planet Nova Prime, lightyears away from Earth. Abandoned, Earth continued to flourish on its own.
Cypher reminds his son,“Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create. Now do not misunderstand me, danger is very real. But fear is a choice.”
One thousand years after the departure from Earth, the Ranger Corps, a peace keeping organization established shortly after colonization of Nova Prime,is led by General Cypher Raige,a wise but cold and emotionless father. His teenage son, Kitai,is a recruit of the Ranger Corps, but his knack for mischief frustrates Cypher. Urged by his wife, Faia (played by Sophie Okonedo), who sees Kitai's behaviour as a longing for his father's love, Cypher takes Kitai on a mission to Earth. The ship travels into an asteroid field and crashes on Earth, killing everyone except a critically injured Cypher and Kitai, who are forced to embark on a perilous journey across uncharted
It’s clear from the trailer both father and son have a great relationship and this works well with the on screen story where they play the same parts. While packed with action and peril, After Earth also looks to have themes that touch on family, courage, and love. This is the first time in twenty years that director M.Night Shyamalan has accepted a project based on someone else's screenplay, and may mark an upturn in his career, after the disappointment of his last few features. This time may be different for Shyamalan, also purely because he has signed up one of Hollywood’s most sought after duos. The family brand star power of Will and Jaden Smith will certainly draw the audience in.

MUSIC
ABSOLUTE ZERO LITTLE GREEN CARS By Rachel Lynch
MAUD IN CAHOOTS DANCE WITH ME By Rachel Lynch & Linn Heldal Maud in Cahoots, consisting of Dublin sisters Maud and Zoe Reardon, recently released their new single Dance With Me. They describe their sound as‘alternative pop mixed in with soul, motown and the occasional glockenspiel’ and it’s quite apparent that they come from classical backgrounds. Classical instruments, such as piano, violin, tuba and cello accompany their songs.Mixed with front woman Maud’s beautiful soulful voice and unique song writing technique I can only describe this as magical.
Absolute Zero is an album which displays great maturity and a fantastic grasp of classical song writing.
The Consequence Of Not Sleeping features some lovely solo guitar moments and with harmonies that are nothing more than stunning. Pleasetreats us to some spine tingling lead vocals from Faye. Then we come to another favorite of mine and probably the most recongisable track, The John Wayne.
The first track Harper Leeis one of eleven amazing and original pieces from the group. The song is a catchy folk tune with immaculate harmonies that works beautifully with the flow of the track.
The folk five-piece have gotten lots of radio play since releasing this as their debut single and they deserve it.This tune it just leaves you wondering if they or anyone else can actually top this style of music? It is also while listening to his particular track I could hear where the Mumford and Sons comparisons came from.
Next up is Angel Owlswhich is one of my personal favorites. Steve Appleby’s voice tells the story while the harmonies of the other members are highlighted during the breaks, listening to them all sing together for the chorus is indescribable, it sounds that good.
Last up is Goodbye Blue Mondaywhich is a soothing and well written track. It is placed excellently on the album as it finishes it off well, so to speak.
There isn’t much more that can be said for My Love Took Me Down To The River To Silence Me other than‘wow’.There is more than a touch of Florence & The Machine to this track.
The album is one in which I would recommend to all. While they are all talented musicians, this band’s main strength lies in the fact that they can all sing. They all have their own flair which is evident throughout the album and works extremely well.
From start to finish Faye’s voice is outstanding but the song itself is one that will have you continuously hitting the replay button.
It’s certainly an intriguing first album and having listened to it in its entirety I must say it leaves me excited as to what is coming next!
The sisters’ new single Dance With Me is an outstanding piece of music and something that I honestly cannot compare to any other band or musician around today. The song builds slowly then kicks off with a euphoric and powerful chorus with beautiful harmonies by the sisters. The catchy hook will be in your head the rest of the day. The video for the track was directed by John McIlduff at St Brendan’s Psychiatric Hospital in Grangegorman. If the girls keep with this fantastic standard of songwriting, they will definitely be one to keep an eye on. Maud in Cahoots keeps it short and sweet and leaves me hungry for more, let’s go dancing!

TECH
XBOX ONE By Cathal Jennings
Microsoft have finally released their Xbox One console. It is the first console released by Microsoft in the last 7 years, the last being the Xbox 360. A lot is expected of the new console since Sony and Nintendo have made steps into the next gen console.Microsoft are pinning their hopes on the Xbox One to bring them the success needed to compete with Sony and Nintendo.
The Xbox One will be released later this year so will be in direct competition with the PS4 for sales. These consoles should be on shelves by Christmas and so the winner should be decided around then. A new Kinect comes with the Xbox One,complete with improved accuracy. It has a 1080p camera, Skype connectivity, and understanding of rotational movement in a structure like a skeleton. Microsoft even claims the new Kinect can read your heartbeat. It can also recognize your controller, not just your hands -- suggesting uses that sound a little like the ones for PlayStation Move's wand.
The Xbox One is quite large and has a retro look to it like the old Nintendos had.The controller and Kinect unit are redesigned, too: the Kinect and Xbox One,in particular, sport sharp-angled,glossy black boxy looks.
Built on the existing service and usernames, the new Xbox Live promises 300,000 servers for Xbox One, a whopping number.
It looks much bigger than the other next gen consoles out there that have slimmed down which gives them a more elegant look.
Matchmaking services will work while you're doing other tasks like watching movies or Web browsing, and bigger, more quickly connecting matches are promised, too.
The name "Xbox One" suggests a reboot, a fresh start. Maybe from this day forward, Microsoft's connected living-room PC strategies will spring from the Xbox One. Or, it'll just a be a very good gaming console.
Microsoft has discussed some cloud services on the Xbox One that seem promising: user-based cloud game saves, uploaded game recording, and even the potential for cloud-processingenhanced games.
The tablet-based SmartGlass experience will center on Xbox One, and will work as before with a variety of phones and tablets. Baked-in Wi-Fi Direct on the Xbox One will allow Bluetooth-like direct communication between external devices, which could come in handy for other future peripherals, too.Second screens will be a major method of interacting with the Xbox One, but details were scarce at the Xbox event. Microsoft plans eight new franchises for the Xbox One in the first year, a hopeful sign for a platform that's become too sequel-dependent. Of course, Forza 5 was shown off, but a new game called Quantum Breakfrom the developers of Alan Wake looks like the sort of game we're more used to seeing from PlayStation, with a big-studio design and cinematic feel. But there is some bad news: like the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One isn't backward-compatible with Xbox 360 games. "Xbox is going to be the next water cooler." That was said during the event to suggest the Xbox One's role as a social-TV platform. To that end, it sounds like Microsoft is developing TV shows and original programming for the Xbox One, making a greater leap into Netflix-like original programming.

GAME
RESIDENT EVIL: REVELATIONS By Cathal Jennings
Revelationsis the best Resident Evilgame of the past few years It’s also the one that's the most true to the series' roots and there's something to be said for that. But taken on its own terms, it's not a great game. It's not remotely scary, and the enemy design is uninspired.Still,Revelationsis competent enough to remind you of what Resident Evil can be, even if it doesn't get under your skin the way the best games in the series do. Set between Resident Evil 4 and 5, Revelations' tale is more concerned with organizations–the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, the Federal Bioterrorism Commission, and the terror group Veltro–than with individuals. Series mainstays Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield are on hand, but they don't get any opportunities for character development here; they're just familiar pawns in the series' latest sinister, overly complicated conspiracy. They're joined by one likable new character, and one awful one. Jill's partner, Parker, bears an unmistakable resemblance to actor Russell Crowe; looks aside, he's a good-humored
companion, someone you'd like to have by your side in a crisis.Chris' partner, Jessica, on the other hand, is so obnoxious and absurd as to strain credulity, even in a story about ooze monsters. The bulk of Revelations takes place on the Queen Zenobia, a luxury ocean liner with plenty of cramped corridors that make for claustrophobic combat. The ship's elegant cabins, casinos, and promenades contrast with its bilges, freight lifts, and other metallic environments, which makes your initial explorations of the ship rewarding. The Queen Zenobia's layout is convincing, making it easy to buy into the idea that it's a real ship with a long and grisly history. But before you've advanced too far through the campaign, you've seen most of what the Zenobia has to offer, and you spend much of your time trekking back through areas you've already covered. Unfortunately, though the best games in the series feature confrontations with memorable, horrifying bosses, the boss battles here, like everything else about Revelations, are standard. Bosses can dish out and withstand plenty of damage, but their designs and their attack patterns are all par for the course. Outside of the campaign, there's Raid mode, an opportunity to fight off enemies solo or with an-
other player, and though the process of leveling up and earning points with which you can purchase more and better gear is predictably compelling, the combat still lacks the spark of scariness that infused the action of earlier Resident Evil entries. Revelations is a decent adventure, but it doesn't come close to reaching the heights the series has in the past.

RACEDRIVER GRID 2 By Cathal Jennings
The souped-up motors of Grid 2take their starting positions The long-awaited title was finally released this May, almost a half-decade to the day since its much-lauded predecessor was rolled out. The maxim for this sequel is one of “total race day immersion”, an ambitious effort to recreate the tension, glamour, and sparking rivalry of any authentic competitive driving event. A significant shift from the first game is the new LiveRoutes system, which randomly creates the track ahead of the racers.“The tracks will change lap by lap, dynamically,” says Becky Crossdale, Level Designer. The game looks great, boasts a stunning selection of cars (from classic BMWs up to supercars that Bill Gates probably couldn’t afford), and has spent its five year absence honing every nut and bolt. The handling in particular already seemed hugely improved when we looked at the game last. Endurance mode mixes it up, first by showcasing LiveRoutes in action, the streets of a bewilderingly pretty Dubai snaking off into the distance, each corner providing a new surprise, second by
forcing a new approach to play. Victory goes to the driver covering the greatest distance in lengthy races – customisable up to a whopping 40 minutes, though here a couple of merciful fiveminute defeats – rather than passing a finish line first. Constantly keeping up with the unpredictable track while trying to nimbly zip between rivals and avoid collisions, all to get the most miles on the wheels, proves a thrilling challenge. In the five-year gap since the first Grid, the DiRT series has veered between rallying and stunt driving, while the Formula One license has been focussed on creating a precise simulation of the real-world sport. Grid 2 now has the chance to complete Codemasters’ triptych of racing offerings, delivering an experience distinct from its garage-mates – and with it shaping up to be a chrome-plated, sexed-up street racer with a fresh take on competitive multiplayer, it should do just that.

MOTOR
AUDI A3 SPORTBACK By Rachel Lynch
The new Audi A3 Sportback launched in February The latest A3 Sportback model sets new standards in the premium compact segment. Characterised by its sporty, long and lean design, the new Sportback is 90kg lighter than its predecessor thanks to ultra lightweight technology. The car is flatter, more masculine and more dynamic. The slim side is defined by the striking Tornado line along the edge of the window and the dynamic line above the sills. The narrow headlights give the Audi A3 Sportback a determined, concentrated look. The integrated roof edge spoiler creates additional dynamics and sportiness at the rear. The interior of the car is beautifully simple, everything looks top of the range without being too over the top or dramatic. Audi has gone for a minimalist look with the chrome surround circular air vents being perhaps the only stand out design in the cabin. Don’t be fooled though, this is still a high tech car, with a pop up screen operated via an easy to use control panel located just behind the gear stick.
Even the entry level of the Spotback are really appealing with Bluetooth, USB connection, air conditioning and you get voice control all as standard. The space at the back is slightly longer than the three door A3 which means you get a little bit more leg room, and your passengers will travel in not only in style but comfort too. The boot has an adjustable floor so you can either go for a bit of extra space or a completely flat loading bay when you drop your seats down. Whatever way suits you it’s a decent shape and it’s about average in size for its class. The car is a lovely drive and the steering is really precise. There is plenty of grip when you go around corners,it is a very composed car.The gear change is also really slick and everything feels fantastically engineered. Customers will be understandably drawn to the diesels but the small turbo charged petrols are great as well, they have got plenty of pace and are remarkably smooth and are surprisingly cheap to run. Audi in general will never be the cheapest model available on the market but any price premium is backed up by the fact it should hold its value really well, so that it will be worth that little bit more than its rivals when you come to selling it. Saying that though, the Audi A3 Sportback is well worth its price tag.
Overall, I found this car to be a luxurious, classy looking model that was practical, smooth on the road and fun to drive. On the road prices for the new Audi A3 Sportback, start from €26,900. For further information or details of your nearest Audi dealership visit www.audi.ie

BUSINESS 1 and 2c Euro coins to be scrapped? Saving pocket change may not end the euro zone crisis, but the European Commission hopes that scrapping the smallest coins could help pennypinching governments cut costs. The European Commission have outlined proposals for the 17 euro zone countries to scrap their 1 and 2 cent coins, leaving 5-cent pieces as the smallest in circulation.
Stripe, the US payments company is set to open for business in Ireland
The Collinson brothers previously formed a start-up called Shuppa in 2007, which later became known as Auctomatic, attracted funding from Silicon Valley venture capital firm Y Combinator, and was acquired just a year later by Canadian firm Live Current Media for US$5 milliion (€3.2 million) when the brothers were just 17 and 19, respectively.
The company was started by two multimillionaire Limerick brothers, Patrick (23) and John Collison (21), who were recently listed in the Forbes top 30 under 30 people in Tech. Stripe, whose investors include early Twitter, Facebook and PayPal backers, has been subject to value speculations ranging from €500 million to €1 billion, and should go live within months.
Stripe’s technology makes it easy to accept mobile payments on any platform – web, mobile, desktop or tablet device - and companies like Lyft,Exec,Postmates,SideCar, Sesame and OrderAhead use Stripe to make it easy to pay for content using an iPhone or Android smartphone.
The Commission says the cost of making the coins has exceeded their face value for the past 11 years, effectively costing member states 1.4 billion euros.More than 45 billion of the 1 and 2 cent coins have been minted since the euro entered circulation in 2002, but many are now buried behind sofas, lost in back pockets or left on the street rather than making their way to cash registers. While scrapping them all together may appear to make sense, some consumers worry that rounding prices up to the nearest 5 cents will prove inflationary. On the other hand, rounding prices down to the nearest 5 cents might be beneficial. Evidence from euro zone countries that no longer issue the smallest coins - including Finland and the Netherlands - shows that there is little impact on prices either way.
Executives from the company were in Dublin last month and revealed the plan to make the platform available in Ireland ahead of other European countries at a Wayra event organised by Telefónica.
Stripe's easy transaction system has been a hit with start-ups and small businesses. In just 24 hours in April Stripe processed more money than in its previous two years, causing a sensation on Twitter in the process! The siblings are thought to be worth at least €120 million jointly, according to Rich List estimates.
In countries where consumers are fond of small coins and precise pricing, including Germany and France, the proposal to withdraw the 1 and 2 cent pieces has gained little traction, a Commission official said. But there has been substantial concern among consumers about the possibility of a spike in inflation.
Stripe raised its first round of funding of US$2 million in March 2011 from investment veterans Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Sequoia Capital and Andreesen Horowitz. This was followed by a further funding round of US$18 million in February 2012 by Sequoia Capital that at the time valued the company at US$100 million.
Stripe's investors include PayPal founder and early Facebook investor Peter Theil, Tesla Motors' Elon Musk and Twitter backer Andreessen Horowitz. The brothers have said they want to see the company go to IPO. Competition from the likes of a revamped Google Wallet and other easy pay firms is hotting up, however.
Non-euro Sweden has abolished small coins four times in the past 40 years and seen no direct effect on price levels. "People like to be concerned," said Carsten Brzeski, a senior economist at ING in Brussels. "But if you think about the psychology of price, I think you'll rather see a rounding down to 95 cents than an upward adjustment."

WRITERS’CORNER
ABy Susan YEAR GONE BY Kelly The day stands clearly in my mind, June 17 2007, a warm sunny day, as I waited to board my flight to Dublin. It was never my intention to come to work in London, but the situation as it stood, I felt it was the best option. I had worked consistently over the last year, socializing very little.Myself and Steve having a complete break in our relationship, Steve wanted space to think things over, no phone calls, no letters, and no communication whatsoever. I had met Steve two years precious at a festival in Galway, instantly I was attracted to him. He had the kind of looks most girls would like, tall, dark and handsome, and quite a charismatic personality. Mixed emotions were turning in my mind on the flight home, would we have the same connection as before, or would he have met somebody else.I had met many guys over the years, but in fairness to say, the attraction to Steve was far greater. The plane landed, and I made my way to the hotel, arriving just in time. I saw Steve sitting at the bar, looking very tanned and relaxed. He made his way over immediately and putting
his arms around me saying “It is so good to see you again.” We started to chat about our year long break, and having good laughs about situations that we experienced over the year. The mood was definitely very light, by eleven o’clock I had consumed a certain amount of alcohol,it broke down the barriers of disappointment. Very casually Steve said “I have certainly enjoyed the time we spent together, but I just feel right now in my life I need to be on my own.” Having no choice I just had to accept his decision. Feeling quite emotional,I got up to leave and said goodbye. As I left the hotel, darkness had well descended and there was quite a coldness in the air. I decide to walk to my parents’ house, wrapping my shawl around me I started the journey.I will miss you Steve, and it’s going to take some time for my emotions to settle. But time is a great healer. It will help me forget and bring happy beginnings once again. Susan lives in Rathfarnham. She has been writing for a while and has been part of a writing group in the past.
SOW ME AND YOU’LL KNOW ME By Trish Nugent A pack of seeds my mother found She sowed them carefully in the ground The pack did not possess a label So my Mam she was unable To tell what would eventually grow Until summer, she wouldn't know. The fragile seedlings slowly grew Beneath the sun and sky of blue She fed and watered emerging shoots Kept weeds from smothering the roots Eventually tiny buds appeared They didn't die as she had feared. She couldn't wait to see the flowers She'd tended for so many hours One morning in the month of June Her flowers came into bloom In sunshine out of the shade A row of scarlet poppies swayed. BOOKWORM DAY By A.L. Kennedy
The psychological aftermath of a soldier’s burden in post-war Britain My reason for choosing this title in the bookshop is a predictable a one.Emblazoned above the title were the words ‘Winner of the 2007 Costa Book of the Year’. I was sold. I tend to find that the kind of books that win, or are even long-listed for these kind of literary awards are a safer bet for what I consider a good read than those that proclaim themselves to be an ‘International Bestseller’.If you’re thinking I’m a book snob, you’re probably right. In this case,my strategy back-fired slightly.I didn’t massively enjoy this book. When I sat down to read it, I found more reasons than usual to put it down and often had to re-read whole paragraphs when I realised my mind had been wandering. That’s not to say it’s not a good book. Far from it. It isn’t really my kind of book though.I struggled to empathise with Alfred, the protagonist for a
number of reasons. The story starts in 1949,when Alfred Day, an ex-RAF tail-gunner is employed as an extra in a war film that echoes his own experiences. The plot flashes back to Alfred’s real war, and slowly, a picture is built up of his whole life to date and how it has marked him. As it says on the back cover of the book:“Alfred Day wanted his war. In its turmoil he found his proper purpose as the tail-gunner of a Lancaster bomber; he found the wild dark fellowship of his crew, and - more extraordinary of all - he found Joyce, a woman to love. But that’s all gone - the war took it away.” Alfred comes from humble beginnings, the son of an abusive fishmonger who beat his wife and son. He was barely old enough to enlist but as soon as he could,he escaped the narrow confines of his childhood and went away to wear the blue of the Royal Air Force.
About The Author Alison Louise "A.L." Kennedy (born 22 October 1965,Dundee) is a Scottish writer of novels, short stories and non-fiction.She is known for her characteristically dark tone,a blending of realism and fantasy, and for her serious approach to her work.
When Alfred is under pressure he falls back on the Midlands dialect of his youth which at times I found quite difficult to follow. It could be that I’m not familiar enough with that accent, but I found it quite distracting, having to read those sections aloud to make sense of them.
She contributes columns and reviews to UK and European newspapers including the fictional diary of her pet parrot named Charlie.
Kennedy deftly creates a crew round Alfred and describes the friendships, strains and the effects of loss very well.In the period after the war Alfred is involved as an extra in making a film based in a prisoner of war camp. Since Alfred ended the war in such a camp this gives rise to mixed emotions, especially involving a man called Vasyl who claimed to be Ukrainian but was surely involved in war crimes. In a way Alfred is soothed by being back in that kind of situation, like that of the ‘Kriegie’ he once was. He is only 25 by the end of the novel so his emotional immaturity may well make sense, but he also appears much older than his years. The war took his youth and left him a broken man without a purpose in life. Day is a psychologically complex novel. Somehow, the inner thoughts of the central character - abstract, staccato, fractured - are delivered in text form, and you get a real sense of his 'voice' despite the whole thing being written in the second and third person.I think it is an interesting narrative style and probably makes the effort of concentration worth it in the end.
Kennedy currently lives in Glasgow and is an Associate Professor in Creative Writing with University of Warwick, having previously taught creative writing at the University of St Andrews. She performs as a stand-up comedian at the Edinburgh Fringe, comedy clubs and literary festivals. She is principally associated with The Stand Comedy Club in Edinburgh.

BRIDAL BEAUTY BRIDAL XXXX By Emer McGillion BEAUTY
Not everyone has the luxury of having their make-up artist at the whole wedding, so it's a good idea to have your bridesmaids hold on to your lipstick/gloss for touch ups. RECIPE
GREEK-STYLE LAMB KEBABS
Ingredients
Method
750g lamb, leg or new season shoulder, well trimmed and cubed Olive oil 1 red and 1 green pepper, cut into chunks 1 red onion, cut into wedges Salt and freshly-ground black pepper
Combine the marinade ingredients in a large non-metallic dish.Add the diced lamb and stir to coat well, then cover and place in the fridge for about two hours if possible.
Marinade 250ml Greek-style natural yoghurt 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teasp. ground cumin 1 teasp. ground coriander Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon
Mint and Garlic Yoghurt Dressing 185ml Greek-style natural yoghurt 1 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped 1 tbsp fresh mint, chopped Grated rind of 1 lemon 2 garlic cloves, crushed
Meanwhile soak eight wooden skewers in water. This will prevent them scorching. If you are short of time use metal skewers. Preheat your barbecue or grill to high and brush lightly with oil. Thread the lamb cubes, peppers and red onion onto the skewers, season and cook for three to four minutes on each side until lightly charred and cooked to your taste. To make the Mint and Garlic Yoghurt Dressing, stir together all the ingredients and season to taste. Drizzle a little dressing over each lamb skewer and serve the rest on the side. Other vegetables such as courgette or cherry tomatoes would also work if you’re not too keen on peppers. These kebabs would be perfect for any summer barbecue, served with some fresh seasonal salads.Cous cous or toasted pitta bread would be an ideal accompaniment to keep with the theme.

Call 087 243 4211 or 01 452 3979 Moss in the lawn can be a major problem, especially during the rainy winter months Moss takeover is a result of a series of garden problems.Identifying and solving these problems promptly will discourage moss growth in the future. Moss spores, exist naturally in the garden and only becomes a problem when the lawn can no longer compete with it. A weakened or stressed lawn can be due to a number of causes, low or unbalanced soil fertility, compacted or wet soils, and heavy shade acidic soil.
penetration of the moss killer; this method will get about 90% of the moss. Moss killers combined with a fertiliser are beneficial where grass vigour is low. Apply moss killers, either by hand or with a push-along spreader but be careful not to apply lawn sand (ferrous sulphate mixed with a carrier) at too high a rate as this can blacken and kill the grass as well as the moss. Apply lawn moss killers in fine weather. Some require watering after 48 hours if there has been no rain.Check the packaging for details. Also, take care while spreading near the pavement and the house to avoid staining the cement.
A thick thatch layer (thatch is a layer of dead grass that has not decomposed; it inhibits water, air and fertilizer penetration into the root area) these problems can be corrected chemically and by hard manual labour scarification (vigorous raking).Try pruning nearby branches to allow even a little more light in.One way to help eliminate moss is to first rake as much as possible out with a spring tine rake but you will not get it all.
If you want to apply ferrous sulphate (sulphate of iron) before raking it. It is best to do this 7 to 14 days before raking. A light high grass cutting with the mower beforehand will help, because ferrous sulphate acidifies the soil you must use it evenly over the whole lawn otherwise you will create pH changes which may affect grass growth and may even increase moss growth in future. The lawn should stay dry for approximately forty eight hours after applying the moss killer, and then a thorough watering is required.
Then apply your preferred iron sulphate based moss killer to the moss that remains after raking. The moss will now be thin enough to allow better
After seven to ten days the moss will begin to turn black, at which time you should hand-rake or dethatch your lawn. This will allow the grass
to grow again in areas previously covered by moss. If bare or thin patches result from moss removal, reseed the area with a grass seed mixture containing a high percentage of perennial rye grass seed. A thick, healthy lawn does not allow room for moss to become established. It is best to rake out the moss on a dry day when the grass is noticeably growing. Mow the lawn reasonably close before hand to better expose the moss and reduce resistance on the rake. Try to maintain a good fertilizing and watering routine. For the first feeding,a well-balanced lawn food, such as Maxi Crop Moss killer and Lawn Tonic, Westland Lawn Feed, Weed and Moss killer, Scot Granular lawn Feed Weed and Moss Control, or Gouldings Lawn Feed Weed Moss Killer. Later in the summer, a higher-nitrogen fertilizer can be applied to stimulate green growth, but please keep in mind that while fertilizing is important, you should not over fertilize your lawn during dry periods, less frequent but longer periods of watering will produce deeper and healthier roots. Try to improve compacted or wet soils. Lawn roots will thrive in healthy soil that drains well and has plenty of organic matter. Poor soil will not drain well and this will only encourage moss growth.

FITNESS
DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THE GYM? By Terry Levai
We are all living and working longer However for many of us the nature of our work has changed from manual labour to being trapped in offices staring at a screen all day. Our jobs are draining us and making us unhealthy. After the age of 25 if we stay sedentary we lose roughly 0.5-1% of muscle mass per year (or gain 1% of body-fat if we stay the same weight) but it doesn’t have to be that way! Working out with a full-time 9-5 (maybe even more) job seems like a daunting thought but I am here to tell you it can be done! I know this because I do it too. As a trainee accountant in Dublin I make sure I put aside some time everyday to take care of myself.
the workout and you will feel more energised and ready for the day. (Of course, if you like your lie in, the evening is fine too.) 3 sets of 10 – 20 diamond push-ups Form a diamond with your hands by touching two thumbs and index fingers together and place your hands under your chest and do push ups like that. Try to keep your elbows from flaring by keeping them in,this works your shoulders more. If you are unable to do push-ups, change the leverage by doing them on your knees. 3 sets 10-15 Leg tucks Sit on the edge of your bed and hold the edges with your hands. Straighten your legs and at the same time lean back. Bring your legs and body together; this is a fantastic abdominal exercise that is far superior to endless sit-ups.
on your other leg.Once you have completed a set, repeat with the other leg. 1 set of 10 Back bridges Lie down as though you are you are going to do sit-ups.Place your hands by your sides and rather than doing a sit up, thrust up with your hips as far you can.Hold this for 2 seconds and come back down.On the 5th repetition hold this position for 10 seconds and on the 10th repetition hold the position for 20 seconds. Finally to finish off, do 10-20 Burpees Begin in a squat position with hands on the floor in front of you. Kick your feet back to a pushup position.Immediately return your feet to the squat position.Leap up as high as possible from the squat position.Repeat, moving as fast as possible.
And here’s the good news: ● To get yourself on the right track 20 – 30 minutes is all you need. ● You don’t even have to travel to the gym.
3 sets of 20 Squats Cross your arms and hold them out in front of you. Place your feet at shoulder width and squat down, keeping your back straight.Go all the way down! No cheating!
Do the repetitions at a reasonable pace and rest for 30-60 seconds between sets. The less you rest the more of a cardiovascular workout this becomes. You can be creative and create a circuit out of the exercises doing one set of each and resting for 60 seconds between each circuit set.

Templeogue Utd underage success and Summer Camp Templeogue United currently has in excess of thirty teams playing at all levels, in the Dublin and District Schoolboy, South Dublin Football League and Dublin Women's Football League. The club’s senior men's teams play in the Leinster Senior League, and the Sunday team plays in Intermediate League Division 1B.
Dubs ease past the Lake County! Last Saturday saw a comfortable victory for Dublin in their 2013 provincial opener as manager Jim Gavin got his senior championship reign off to a successful start in the Leinster quarter-final. They now advance to face Kildare at the semi-final stage on June 30th. It was 22 minutes before Westmeath registered their first point and by that stage Dublin had recorded 8 points and it was also an 8-point game at half time with Dublin leading 0-12 to 0-04. They also won the second half by 8 points and ended up winning 1-22 to 0-09, it was not much of a test for the ambitious Dubs but the omnipotence they showed in attack is a pointer to a long summer forthe boys in blue. The day was tinged with sadness with a minute’s silence before for Noel Curran who was the father of Paul Curran current Ballymun Kickhams manager and arguably the best footballer Tallaght has produced. An All Ireland winner with his native Meath Noel also played for Thomas Davis and St Judes, Ar dheis dé go raibh a anam.
The academy is really the lifeblood of the club. This caters for boys and girls aged four to seven years old. The academy is open eleven months of the year, on Sundays at 10.00am from August through to June.Newcomers always welcome. The club have recently had some very successful campaigns. Firstly the U12’s won the South Dublin Football League and the Pat White Cup. The U15’s won the Premier Dublin District Schoolboy League on 22 May and this team also won the League last year as U14’s, so they have now won it two years in a row.Well done to both teams. The club will host its Summer Camp from July 8th-July 12th at Templeogue Utd’s Astro pitch. The camp welcomes all children up to 13 years of age. INROVERS MAGAZINE
TRIM HOOPS By Padraig Conlon
THETRIM HOOPS Supporters club has been flying the flag for Rovers in Meath for 20 years. InRoverscaught up with member Mark Scanlon to find out more..
How long have you been supporting the Hoops?
then another four or five from the North side of Dublin who make up the club. Since the club moved to Tallaght, and things have got better on the pitch, we’ve brought a few more in. We go to every game, home and away.I’m just on my way up to Derry right now!
Since I was 7 in 1993 when I was the Rovers mascot for a home game versus Monaghan.I also have family who are big supporters of the club. My Granddad was from Ringsend and he followed them since the 1930s, my uncle is also a fan and he used to buy me jerseys when I was a kid, which might have started it all!
Is it hard to fit work around following the Hoops?
Do you get much stick from the Meath GAA fans? No not all.You get a few people saying“How can you go up there to support a team, sure isn’t Drogheda or closer?” When I explain how long Rovers have been in the family they understand!
How many of you make up Trim Hoops? It depends, there are nine or ten of us from Trim
Ah no work are great, I’m able to work around it with my shifts. Some of the other lads are in college so it’s no problem for them. I love the away trip like this one to Derry, Turners Cross or Sligo. The Sligo one is usually grand because it’s always on a Saturday.
What have you made of Rovers start to the season? The results haven’t been what we’ve expected so far. The football we’re playing is actually better than what we played under Michael O Neill. Trevor is a great coach, there’s a great vibe,every-
InTallaghtMaster37_Layout 1 05/06/2013 15:39 Page 59
thing will click soon and we’ll see the fruits of all the hard work.As regards the long term,Trevor is a great appointment.Rover’s fans are demanding but I think Trevor is the right man to bring us on. We have the strongest squad in the league, even though we lost Twiggy. It’s hard to replace a player like him but I think the goals will be spread across the squad this season.
What have been your most memorable matches? Any of the big European games, Juventus away, which was a great game to go to as we actually competed on the pitch. Spurs away as well. The game in Bray when we won the title, even though it was cagey, when the full time whistle went the relief was unbelievable. Also the first derby in Tallaght when Twiggy got two in stoppage time. Bohs were never the better side all though they may think different! Getting out of Division 1 at Cobh was great as well as there was the uncertainty that we could be stuck in Division 1 for another year, it was great to go straight back up.
Who have been your favourite players down the years? Derek Tracey, it was great to see a player that stayed such a long time with Rovers.Mark Kenny, a great lad and a fantastic player.Noel Hunt, even though he wasn’t at the club a long time he done brilliantly.
If you could change anything about the League Of Ireland what would it be? I would like to see an All Ireland League. I really enjoyed the games against Coleraine,Linfield,Lis-
burn Distillery.Travelling up to them is great,a bit like the Derry trip. I’d also like to see more local coverage of the league. It’s great that publications like yourselves show an interest in your local club, it’s a pity more didn’t.
Do you think we’re ever likely to see an All Ireland League? I don’t know, hopefully, but the politics of it are very difficult. The IFA and the FAI don’t want to lose any of their European places. I think if it was run on a midweek basis like the Setanta Cup, but if it were a consistent league as opposed to a knock out, it would be a great competition.
How much do you enjoy the Bohs games? The derbies are always good but the last few haven’t been as nerve wracking now that we’re the favourites. The recent game in Dalymount didn’t have the same meaning. The games with Sligo and Derry are actually more important these days.
Do you think Rovers can claw back St Pat’s big lead? Yeah I think we can. They’ve had a great start but I see no reason why we can’t catch them. They will drop points eventually; we just have to make sure we’re in a good position to take advantage when they do. They also have the distraction of Europe, which can sometimes take the focus away from the league for a while. The next four games will be massive.

60 and he was really relishing being able to attend a match. “My brother was a bit ill and we thought we’d come back to Ireland for a visit, plus I’d just finished the book so one thing led to another and Rovers were kind enough to say“You can launch it here” so everything worked out perfectly, my brother’s improving and I’m in in great form. “Its great to meet all the old players. It’s the spirit of Rovers that’s immense. Rovers is a club that can do great things in Tallaght, and all around, and they do. I”m very proud of having an association with them.
ROVERS RETURN By Padraig Conlon
PRIOR to the recent home match against Sligo, Rovers hosted a very special event for former players in the Gala Room. The club had issued an open invitation to all ex Rovers players to come and enjoy the match against the Bit O’ Red and catch up with their old colleagues. The legend count was off the scale as Jim Maxie McCann, Gerry Mackey, Mick Leech, Pat Byrne, Mick Byrne, Robbie Gaffney and Terry Eviston were among the many Hoops Heroes to come along on the night.
Before the event ex Hoop Jimmy Cummins launched his new book Jimmy is a former Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper who spent six years with the Hoops from 1963 to 1969.Rovers won a record six FAI Cups in a row during that period and came very close to eliminating the mighty Bayern Munich in the 1966 European Cup Winners’ Cup. Cummins was Mick Smyth’s understudy for the majority of his time at Milltown and he was only 18 years old when he made his first debut against league leaders Drumcondra at Milltown on Sunday, 20 December 1964. Titled Through The Hoops, the book is Jimmy’s true story tracing back his young years growing up at the foot of the Dublin Mountains, through his six successful years with Shamrock Rovers at Milltown and then on to the infamous Govern-
ment Stockbroker Inquiry, which virtually made him an outcast and an exile from the land and the people he loved. For the first time, Jimmy releases documentary evidence substantiating his claims of impropriety against the Irish Government Stockbrokers Butler & Briscoe, evidence“disbarred”and buried by the Committee of Inquiry. “The motivation for writing the book really came about two years ago,” said Jimmy. “I had had it all in my mind before. I saw what Ireland was starting to go through again and it brought back all the old memories and the reason I left Ireland in 1980. And it brought back some unhappy memories as well but I felt I had to put it all in. Writing it was good for me. It brought back the good memories as well. It’s a mixed book, its chequred a bit, but I hope it’s enjoyable anyway.” Because Jimmy now lives in Perth in Western Australia his chances to watch the Hoops are rare
“One thing about Rovers is they never give up, even if they’re in a hole, they taught me to keep fighting and keep battling away, so I owe them a lot,” said Jimmy. On hearing about the plight of young Rovers fan James Gill, a Rathfarnham lad like Jimmy, who is raising funds for much cancer needed treatment, Jimmy has generously offered to donate €5 per book sold at the launch towards James's treatment fund. You can find out how to support the James Gill fund by going to the website: www.jamesgillfund.com.
Also present on the night was Leo O’Reilly who played with The Hoops for three years in the 1950’s “I made my debut in ‘55 against Dundalk, that’s a date to be remembered as I scored four goals. That still holds up as the record not just with Rovers but in the League Of Ireland. That was a special day for me. I had a great time in the 50s. “To me Paddy Coad was the greatest player in League Of Ireland football, without a shadow of a doubt in my mind, and everybody else’s mind too!
InTallaghtMaster37_Layout 1 05/06/2013 15:40 Page 61
61 “He has the all time scoring goal record with Rovers but I’ll tell you how good he was his goal scoring wasn’t even his biggest contribution, his presence on the pitch was fantastic. He had great balance and was a wonderful leader. “I was only with Rovers for about three years, I was a centre forward and Paddy Ambrose was also a centre forward so I was more times in the B team! “I went on to win the League Of Ireland Championship with Limerick and Dundalk after I left the club but I have such happy memories of my time with Rovers, how could I not.My son and my grand son are season ticket holders, I’m not but I try to get up as many times as I can. “They’re a great club, their hooped colours of green and white, that’s magic to me.I hate to see them play in any other colour! “When we played we’d never think that we were going to be beaten, if we were getting beat 2-0 with three minutes to go we were still convinced we were going to win! We’d never think about defeat. “Back then if someone got a belt and they went down you knew they were hurt! There were some very tough men about back then! I played 16 years without ever being booked and on my very last game I finally got booked! “The game I’m probably best remembered for was when we played Chelsea in 1955 and I scored two when we beat them 3-2 at Dalymount. "All the newspapers leading up to the game had headlines about Chelsea, there wasn’t as much mention of us because they had won the title the previous week. There was such a huge frenzy because they had won for only the first time in 50 years.
“Ireland had played Holland the night before in the same ground, but there was a bigger crowd at the Rovers game.
That he got the goal against the famous Busby Babes makes it an even more special achievement.
“Paddy Ambrose had got injured the previous night against Holland so I stepped in.
“I have very good memories of my time playing for Rovers, it’s great to be back again. There’s only a couple of us from my time left, and I’m delighted to see a few of them here tonight.
"I'd been 12th man a lot that year and I didn't know until I got there that I was playing. Liam Touhy scored one and I scored two. “Us winning wasn't a great surprise to me. "We scored three in first 25 minutes and although it's 50 years ago I can still see the looks on their face. "They fought very very hard and got two goals back in the second half but we defended brilliantly and held out for a great victory!”
Another legend in attendance was Jim Maxie McCann who played for Rovers from 1951 to 1962 and holds the distinction of being the first Irishman to score a goal in the European Cup.
“I still remember that goal against Manchester United. Liam Tuohy went down the wing and went past Roger Byrne. Then he cut the ball back and I hit it from the penalty spot. It was a special moment. 'Paddy Coad was our best player in the second leg, he did unbelievable things with the ball and he owned Old Trafford that night. “I think Paddy is the best player Rovers ever had.”
