Ballyroan Library nominated for Irish Architecture award
Children all over Dublin are invited to join a summer reading challenge in a wonderful initiative from public libraries. Going Places with Books: the Summer Reading Buzz aims to encourage children to read in the long summer break when reading skills can decline without the regular reading activity at school. The reading challenge is for all children living and visiting Dublin and it’s FREE. Children and libraries in Kildare and Longford are taking part too with great events and activities taking place in all the libraries. In fact you’ll bee amazed at what’s going on! Children registering to take part in the Buzz will be given a Summer Reading Buzz membership card and asked to enter their name and library card number. Every time they read a book, their Summer Reading Buzz card is stamped with a specially designed Bee stamp. When they have completed the card (i.e. read 10 books) they simply hand the card into the library where it will be entered into a draw for fabulous prizes. There will be rewards along the way too with specially designed bookmarks, pencils, wristbands and bee stickers. You can follow @summerbuzz on Twitter.

Ken Bay Electric Bikes By Padraig Conlon

The bikes are covered in the Cycle To Work Scheme and prices range from €850 to €1250 depending on the model. Employees could save between €250 and €500 Euro and employers would make a return of 21% on the investment. Gerry and Ronan also do any servicing that may be needed and can advise and suggest models to customers based on requirements. Gerry is delighted with how business is going and believes the bikes are proving so popular because they are cheap to run and practical to use. “It only costs 10c to charge the battery, and you could cycle 70km for that 10c of electricity – so it's far more economical than public transport. Interview
and said “I need to change this”?
By Rachel Lynch
Constantly! I look at some places and think “Wow, did they really go with that design?” It’s interesting, some places I walk into and I admire them for exactly what they have done. Right now it’s funny, I’m working on a new album called Roots but after I finish that I’m starting another project called Architecture, where I’m taking 12 architects and creating music based on the buildings.
DJ ROGER SANCHEZ, Grammy Award winning producer, remixer and one of the world’s foremost names in House music InTallaght Magazine caught up with him when he was over recently to celebrate Entourage’s birthday and we were lucky enough to catch a few words with the main man himself before he hit the decks in front of a packed crowd dying to catch a glimpse of the star.
So Roger, you are back in Ireland, how does it feel? It’s good, wet and rainy, but I have had so many people telling me if I had have been here last week I would have experienced a proper Irish summer, I’ve yet to see it.
Where were you before? Right before Dublin I was in Miami and funny enough it was actually raining there before I left too, so maybe it’s me, maybe I’m bringing the rain with me.
What’s the plan?
It’s a very bizarre idea but I’m trying to put the two together. So at least I won’t feel as though I wasted my whole time studying architecture.
Is there anything you would like to do other than music?
Well there are so many things I love. I love fashion, I love film, so maybe getting involved in those. I’m actually working on something right now with a film producer, and so getting involved there is getting ready to head on an Amer- my tour manager because we have certainly something I look forward to in the future. ican tour. I’ve always loved Celtic crosses, it’s also the faith that I have grown up with so it’s kind of a combination of the two. I love the design, I also redesigned the interior of my Celtic cross so it’s not exactly a Celtic cross design but its similar, I just personalised it.
So now you’ve shown us you’re really Irish! Of course and that’s fine, to be sure to be sure, I’m from Dublin and I’m Irish (said in a pretty impressive Dublin accent).
What is your favourite song, a particular one that gets the crowd going? There is more than one and it’s never really just the one track. Out of my own tracks it’s always the most recent ones like my new song Troubleman, that always gets people going and then Another Chance really works. There are tonnes of tracks, even classic tracks like the acapella to Free by Ultra Naté, things like that always work.
Anybody out there at the moment that you would like to work with at the minute? Oh loads, loads, I mean probably one of my favourite all time artists I would love to collaborate with is Björk. Right now I’m actually doing a track with Sharleen Spiteri from Texas I just remixed her next single so I’m doing something with her and I’m setting something up with Boy George.
I WOULD LOVE TO COLLABERATE WITH BJÖRK

Roger Sanchez Boy George wow that’s a massive change up for him. Well he has gone more underground lately, you see there is a love for this kind of music and it’s more appreciated, well in my opinion it is, and for me I always try not to do the obvious commercial thing.
Are you heading back to Ibiza this year? Yeah, every Monday night I’ll be on there.
Is it true you’re not a big drinker? I rarely ever drink, I have a little bit of Champagne, but I will do a few shots, not while I’m playing and definitely not tequila.
What would be your favourite drink? Umm I suppose a Mojito have you ever tried Cosmo Cosi?
The Irish will try anything once it’s bought for us. Brilliant once it’s got alcohol you guys are happy. Now I can do Sambuca, or would you believe Baileys? I like that too.
So what’s the next adventure Roger? The next thing is like I said when I get to Ibiza I’m working on my album called Roots. Although now you mention adventure I recently went on a safari when I was in South Africa and I was petting a leopard which was really fun, although not as much fun as diving with sharks. That’s what my tour manager did but I just stayed on land and petted the leopard.

Derek O’Neill Interview

By Padraig Conlon
Linda and I decided that, from then on, we would just take what money we needed to live on and give the rest to charity. This led us to start doing workshops and giving all the proceeds to charity.
TALLAGHT MAN Derek O'Neill has been quietly transforming the lives of people all over the world for the past 15 years. His outstanding work led to him being awarded the Variety International Children's Charity's Humanitarian Award last year. Previous winners have included Sir Winston Churchill, Princess Diana, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, to name but a few. After winning the award he generously donated $100,000 to the organization. Derek has used his talents as a transformational therapist, his knowledge and compassion to help reconstruct his clients' outlook on life. His comprehensive understanding of his field stems from his extensive training in martial arts, where he utilized over thirty years of experience to pioneer a new psychology–transformational therapy. After witnessing devastating poverty in India, he set up the charitable SQ (Spiritual Quotient) Foundation to build schools, hospitals and other practical institutions in the world's poorest regions.

How did it all start for you, could you tell us a little more about your background? After a stint in the army and with a wife and two kids (Gavin and Orla) to provide for I did a bit of everything. I had started matrial arts at a very young age. It was while I was doing gardening work that I was led, indirectly, to seek psychotherapy. I had a terrible phobia about wasps, so I went to a psychotherapist. During our session I remembered that there had been a wasp in the toilet when a man tried to rape me when I was young. That was when I knew I needed therapy to deal with the abuse. I didn't have any money and discovered that it was cheaper to study to become a therapist than pay for more sessions. There were social welfare grants. Within three years I was running a successful

World War Z By Rachel Lynch
As far as zombie movies go they tend to be quite hit or miss, but when you add Brad Pitt to the mix you are assured it will be somewhat decent The storyline is reflective of how most of this genre go, the future of civilisation is at stake and there has to be a hero. That hero is Gerry played by Brad Pitt. It is based on a novel by Max Brooks, son of the filmmaker and humourist Mel, and it follows Gerry Lane, a stay-athome father who was once a former United Nations action man. Pitt has done well in pulling this all together but at times I did ask myself where that entire 200 million dollar budget actually went.

Reality Romance Over
Love/Hate Wrap Up Season 4
More Glory For Rory
Kelly Donegan has split from boyfriend Dave Behan this month. The pair who found love on Ireland’s reality TV show Tallafornia had been dating for two years.
It’s hard to believe the Love/Hate cast have just finished up filming another season on the award winning Irish drama after two months of intensive filming.
It is believed Irish golfer Rory McIlroy is set for a €2m windfall from his investment in an Irishowned luxury yacht company.
The young couple had their ups and downs throughout the series but had seemed to still be going strong. Kelly told The Irish Sun “I believe everything happens for a reason and that I am obviously meant to be single at this moment in time. It’s brilliant that I get to focus on my career. The only man I need for the next while is my dog Tyson.”
The wrap party for the crew took place this month at Pacino's in Suffolk Street and saw familiar faces dressed up to the nines. The Dublin-set gangland drama has even been picked up by Channel 5 in the UK for broadcast later this year. The long anticipated Series 4 is due to be broadcast in the autumn.
Although the world number two will certainly see the extra few bob as nothing more than pocket money having signed a €294m sponsorship deal with Nike last November.
Robbie & Olly Wow Irish Crowd
TV3 Beauty Marries In Sicily
Chris Has Hit The Big Time
Xposé entertainment presenter Karen Koster married boyfriend of four years John McGuire in a romantic ceremony in Sicily among close friends and family.
We all knew he had the talent to go far but it seem that things are all falling into place for Irish actor Chris O’Dowd as he has firmly planted his roots in LA and bought himself a property.
Robbie Williams took his Take The Crown tour to the Aviva this month wowing the Irish public. If it wasn’t enough that we had Robbie for the evening it was certainly a welcome treat to also have his special guest Olly Murs belting out some of his tunes before Robbie himself took the stage. A live album recorded on the night was available to buy at the venue, the ultimate memento of the live experience.
McIlroy is a shareholder in the Dorset-based yacht maker Sunseeker. The firm is being sold to Chinese investors for a 10-fold return.
Karen wore a stunning strapless simple gown and her bridesmaids followed suit with beautifully elegant pale pink Grecian style dresses.
The first two episodes of the second series of O’Dowd’s Moone Boy were premiered at the Sky Cat Laughs Comedy Festival in Kilkenny.
Karen told Xposé that it was a “beautiful, emotional and hilarious day” and that she’s “happy to be John’s wife!
The comedy, which airs on Sky One, has been picked up for a third series, with filming set to resume in late 2013.

Music Kodaline In A Prefect World By Rachel Lynch
36 Graciano Major You & Me By Rachel Lynch
We brought you an interview with both Graciano Major and Ryan O’ Shanughnessy a few weeks back, conducted while on the set of their new track You & Me. The single has finally been released and the public now have a chance to hear the two pair up in this love song. Graciano begins the song which explains the good times and bad times shared with his partner. As we get to the chorus we are treated to a gentle medley of oohs and ahhs which suit the song perfectly.

Graciano can certainly sing and showcases his range excellently here. As we get further into the song we also get a taste of Graciano’s rapping skills and it’s clear he is in his comfort zone with this style. Towards the end Ryan O’Shanughnessy features on the piano taking the tone right back down to a slow set. It does sound quite similar to work he has done in the past but luckily for Ryan his tone and flair never gets old. The song is well worth a listen and shows Graciano as the diverse artist he really is. It’s obvious the track is mostly Graciano but the addition of the input from Ryan really adds to it. It’s a typical love song but with a twist.

Indeed, Glass’s main disadvantage is that it looks slightly weird, rather than that it should scare people by its implications.
Your Android phone already tells Google where you are, providing you with useful information and Google with data on traffic conditions.
If anything, my concern was that Glass doesn’t yet do enough to be set to be truly ubiquitous. It integrates with Google Now to provide suggestions on, say, when you need to leave to make it to your next appointment, and it can, say, provide prompts to augment a conversation. One developer has written an app that makes Glass flash up facts he’s trying to learn so that over time he remembers them. That’s useful but not a revelation. Remember Me By Cathal Jennings
Within Remember Me, there's an outstanding game struggling to be set free It is held back by a story that never takes off and claustrophobic levels that never allow the fantastic nearfuture setting to take center stage. Remember Me is not the game its world and premise hint that it could have been; rather, it's simply a good third-person action game: entertaining, slickly produced, and flavorful enough to keep you engaged to the end of its six-hour run time. It also stars a great heroine who is both powerful and vulnerable, allowing her to stand out in an intriguing world of corporate influence and lurking danger. That world is centered on the Paris of the future, where technology has allowed us to exchange and purchase memories, perhaps to replace painful memories with pleasant ones, or to share intimate recollections with friends and lovers. But of course, such power over human emotion also proves dangerous, and happy memories can be bought and abused like
drugs, or even stolen and corrupted. Remember Me's opening moments show you the dark side of Neo-Paris, dropping you into a macabre science facility, and forcing you to share the young protagonist's fear and confusion.

41 The Last Of Us By Cathal Jennings
The downfall of civilization redefines moral boundaries No longer do labels like thief and murderer mark you as a criminal; everyone must steal, must kill, must do whatever it takes to survive. Humans roam in packs like feral dogs, claiming their territory and killing anyone who encroaches on their turf. Life is bleak, brutal, and exhausting. The outbreak happened so quickly that there was no quarantine plan in effect. Infected monsters crashed through their neighbors' windows, smashed the doors to splinters. Husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, dead before they could react, or worse. Maybe they became one of the infected.

44 SMEs in court victory on State contracts The High Court had delivered a judgment in favour of SMEs in a case challenging the State's exclusion of smaller firms from certain public procurement tenders.
Local Teacher Scoops Major Award On Tuesday June 18, The Ireland Fund Business Plan Competition took place in the Guinness Enterprise Centre and we are delighted to announce that the winner was a local secondary school Science teacher. Ollwyn Moran, from Templeogue, developed a babygro with grips that aids neurological development in babies by preventing them from slipping and sliding while crawling. The idea for Creeper Crawlers Crawl Suit came about when Ollwyn noticed that her first born had difficulty crawling on wooden or laminate floors, the babygros help the child to crawl due to the innovative grips, which in turn promotes healthy body and brain connections. Ollwyn had to present her Business Plan to the 12 judges and admitted to being nervous beforehand but she obviously performed well and her passion for the product was communicated effectively and she was the clear winner, Ollwyn explained that while she was delighted to receive the award the fact that she was the unanimous choice of the 12 judges gave amazing validation to her years of hard work! Ollwyn won â‚Ź10,000 plus in-kind supports from the DCU Ryan Academy, the Guinness Enterprise Centre and Bank of Ireland, this coupled with the contacts she has made during the process will help bring the business to the next level! See www.creepercrawlers.com for more.
ISME has welcomed the decision handed down by Mr. Justice Hogan in the High Court on the public procurement practices of Government and the 'Framework Agreements', specifically for managed print services and found that Minister Hayes was acting 'ultra vires'. The judgement means that public service procurers can deal with all SMEs and SMEs can continue to quote for work across the public service, even where a 'Framework Agreement' exists. Commenting on the court's decision ISME, Chief Executive, Mark Fielding said; "Given the importance of small and medium enterprises to the Irish economy, a level playing field is needed for all businesses wishing to participate in public tendering. The benefits of higher SME participation in the public procurement process are obvious, in promoting fair competition and innovation. Procurement policies can help stimulate economic development by increasing productivity within SMEs, at the same time reducing costs." He said that he has been attempting to get the minister to understand the difference between price and value since he was appointed.
4 HMV stores to reopen with 100 jobs HMV is to reopen at least four shops creating 100 jobs according to recruitment agency Excel which is looking for staff in Dublin and Limerick. Its shops on Dublin's Henry Street, Liffey Valley shopping centre, Dundrum Centre and the Crescent Shopping Centre, Limerick will open again in the next few weeks and Hilco, who bought 141 HMV stores from the administrator in the UK for a reported â‚Ź59m, said it has begun recruitment. A former landmark store on Grafton Street is not included and the property is currently on the rental market. The 16 HMV stores in the Republic closed in February and 300 staff were made redundant after the company's receiver Deloitte said the business was not viable due to "competition from web-based retailers and digital downloads", compounded by "high levels of rent". Former staff that lost their jobs in February have been encouraged to apply for the new positions. An initial plan to reopen one shop in Dublin has now been expanded following deals with store landlords and the brand now looks set to re-emerge with a significant Irish presence. Hilco have also recently purchased film rental company Xtra-vision.

45 Pharmaceutical Giants Back Ten-Year-Old Author A talented 10-year-old boy, whose first two books were published in March this year, has received the backing of Ireland’s pharmaceutical giants, which are now supplying and distributing his work.
Online increasingly women’s destination for health and beauty
Joe Prendergast, of Sandyford in Dublin, wrote The Great Fragola Brothers, and its sequel, The Great Fragola Brothers: The Twisted and was snapped up by publisher Emu Ink.
Almost one third (30%) of Irish women buy cosmetics and skincare products online, citing online deals (72%), access to products not available in local stores (63%) and ability to see reviews from other shoppers (53%) as the main reasons why.
The proceeds from all sales, of both his e-books and paperbacks, Joe decided, will go to the Cancer Clinical Research Trust (CCRT) in St Vincent’s Hospital, in memory of his Dad Geoff.
The research, commissioned by Boots Ireland, came as the retailer launched its new dedicated Irish website, boots.ie.
Now, thanks to Uniphar, United Drug and Pinewood Healthcare, all of which have got behind the talented youngster and his cause, the paperbacks are now available in over 1,500 pharmacies nationwide.
The site will sell 26,000 products including many not available in smaller Irish stores, which can be ordered in-store, online or by phone and delivered to your home, workplace or nearest Boots Ireland store. Customers will be able to access product reviews and spend and earn Boots Advantage Card points online. Boots Ireland’s research also revealed that almost a third (28%) of women shop online at work, with one in five (21%) women going so far as to say that they prefer to shop online than in-store. Commenting on the research, Debbie Smith, Managing Director, Boots Ireland said: “We want to offer our Irish customers a great shopping experience, whether that’s online or in-store. Visit www.boots.ie for more information.
Ger Rabbette, CEO of Uniphar said, “Joe’s undeniable talent and his determination to help support the fight against cancer really struck a chord with us. He wrote his excellent The Great Fragola Brothers books in memory of his Dad and we wanted to ensure that as many children as possible got to experience the magical adventures of Guiseppe and Paolo. The books are in stock and ready to be distributed to over 1,500 pharmacies all over Ireland from today.” United Drug’s Ed Gibbons said: “I know Professor Crown and his team in St. Vincent’s will be extremely grateful for his kindness, and his family, with good reason, will be very proud of him. Well done Joe from all in United Drug.” Joe’s books are now available, for €9.99 each, through pharmacies across Ireland and can also be bought and rented at www.emuink.ie

No cars to disrupt us ‘cept cops on the beat Plodding their way on oversized feet. J’member the days when the milk was delivered, The coalman came too in case we were shivered. A horse pulled the bread van and lots of cake too. Oh, the smell was divine as we joined in the queue.

The first butterfly lived with the rose for many years and loved it with a true heart; But with a flower such as a rose, Many others will try and pick its beauty. 1 47 THE LAMENTS By George Hagen I do love a good family saga, and I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this one I also tend to like novels set in other cultures, and this is the perfect crossover in that respect. The family at the centre of the narrative are, unsurprisingly called the Laments. As a family they have one motto, that the Laments travel, that’s just what they do.
The story starts in a hospital in Salisbury, Rhodesia, where George Hagen himself was actually born. The distinction that that same city is now called Harare and the country is Zimbabwe is central to the plot. These were colonial times, not modern day. The Laments are ‘white Africans’ living a privileged existence. The fact that Hagen lived through a similar experience to the family in the book explains how real and relatable the writing is. I felt I could understand why the different characters felt and acted the way that they did.
When Howard and Julia Lament, white South Africans living in Rhodesia, secretly adopt Will,a baby switched at birth in a bizarre hospital debacle, it marks the beginning of a journey that takes them from Rhodesia to the Middle East,Britain to the New Jersey suburbs – for no matter where the Laments set up home, the grass always seems greener on the other side of the ocean. I feel the use of the surname Lament has a symbolic meaning in this book. Every time the family move to a new country, they lose something, both metaphorically and physically. From Will having to leave his first ever friend in Bahrain, something to lament. Through the Laments’ restlessness, responses to adversity, and especially to losing his sense of belonging in Africa. their unwieldy love for one another, George As the Laments discover that living somewhere Hagen gives us a portrait of every family that is doesn’t necessarily mean belonging there, Will funny, tragic, and improbably true. grows up struggling with his sense of identity in the shadow of his anarchic twin brothers Julius and About The Author Marcus.Yet when disillusion and mishap threaten George Hagen was born in Salisbury, Southern to tear his family apart, it is Will who fights to hold Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) in 1958. We get to know the personalities of the three children, but Will is at the heart of the story. His struggles to fit in and his sense of not quite belonging even in his family, never mind in the societies that he is thrust into, make me wonder if this reflects Hagens feelings on his own childhood. In fact, in an interview with Barnes & Nobel he revealed: “I was a surrogate baby for another mother in the ward whose child was in an incubator. So every day I would spend some time with her, and some time with my mother.” Luckily for him his story didn’t take the strange twist of Will’s but it’s a great jumping off point for a plot! Undeniably eccentric, the Laments are also universal. Every family moves on in life. Children grow up, things are left behind; there is always

these days are going for colour. It may depend on your colour scheme, or you may just want to add a pop of colour against all the white and neutral tones. Don't forget about pampering your feet. FROM FAKE TAN TO
FINGERTIPS Tan For most Irish brides, the pasty almost blue tone to the skin causes a bit of a problem for not wanting to blend in with your dress! We all know the health risks associated with sun beds so best to stay clear - particularly if you are very pale and you don't tan easily. Many women are turned off the idea of spray tans because they don't want to look orange, and we have all had our bad experiences with tan at one time or another! But realistically, a lot of professional tanning products today are more advanced and won't give you the tangoed look. A once over spritz is usually enough to take the bottle white glow away, and add some warmth to the skin. Prepare your skin by exfoliating with a body scrub, to remove dead skin cells. When you apply fake tan, it tends to grab hold and cling to dry skin, which can make it look uneven. So by moisturising every day in the lead up to getting spray tanned, it will mean your skin will be soft and hydrated, and your tan won't turn out to be streaky. If you are shaving or getting waxed, make sure it is done 24 hours before your tanning session. If it is done after, you will remove most of the tan. On
the day of getting tanned, avoid deodrant, perfume and body creams. These can react with the tan and alter the colour - not good! Get one done a few weeks before the big day to put your mind at ease to how it will turn out. Getting spray tanned 48hours before your wedding day is the safest option. It may darken on the second day, and will settle in on the third day. As always with false tan, moisturise twice a day to help prolong it and this will also make sure that it fades gradually as opposed to becoming patchy.
Nails False nails don't seem to be as popular as they used to be. If you bite your nails, or have weak nails where it's impossible for them to grow, then nail extensions are the best way to make your hands look elegant and groomed for your wedding. In recent years, it's the likes of Shellac & Gelish - which are known as a power polish - that are becoming most popular. "On like a polish, wears like a gel". There is no drying time, and they are chip resistant - which is amazing considering that you have your honeymoon to think about as well! French polish has always been the traditional nail look that brides go for, but many more

Recipe Hummus
50 Guacamole
Accompaniments The beauty of these dips is their versatility. Hummus, being a Middle Eastern dish, is usually served with triangles of toasted pitta bread. Guacamole just cries out for tortilla chips and salsa on the side. This is just tradition of course, feel free to mix and match! Both dips work equally well with some fresh vegetable crudités such as sticks of:
carrot celery peppers cucumber asparagus sugar snap peas or any other vegetable you feel like!
Ingredients
Ingredients
200g canned chickpeas 2 tbsp lemon juice or more 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp ground cumin Salt 4 tbsp water 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tsp paprika 100ml tahini (sesame seed paste) - optional
1 red onion, finely chopped 1 tbsp of ground coriander 1 tbsp of ground cumin 8 ripe Hass avocados 3 red chillis, seeded and finely chopped juice of 3 lemons 1 tub of sour cream 2 tbsp freshly chopped chives salt and pepper to taste
Method
Method
Drain the chickpeas and rinse. Reserve a few whole chick peas for serving. Combine the chickpeas, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, salt, tahini, and water in a food processor, and blend to a creamy purée.
In a large bowl combine the red onion, coriander and cumin.Add the avocados to the bowl and mash well with a fork. Add the chillies, lemon and season generously and mix well.
Add more lemon juice, garlic, cumin or salt to taste. Turn out into a dinner plate, and make smooth with the back of a spoon.
Place the guacamole in the centre of 4 bowls, spoon the sour cream on top and finally sprinkle with the chives.
Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and scatter with the reserved chickpeas. Sprinkle with paprika.
Avocado browns quickly when exposed to air so if there is any left over, it won’t look great the next day. It’s still fine to eat though!

RAISE THE BAR
IN YOUR GARDEN Raised bed gardening can offer gardeners the chance to increase crop production while decreasing garden area Raised beds are very helpful to gardeners that have limited gardening space and those who have difficulty with poor clayey soils which do not dry early. Efforts to improve poor soils can be focused on the raised bed growing areas only. They help keep pathway weeds from your garden soil, prevent soil compaction, provide good drainage and serve as a barrier to pests such as slugs and snails. Raised beds drain and warm up earlier in the spring, which will allow planting of cool season vegetables much earlier than normal recommended planting dates. Raised bed gardens can be worked on soon after heavy rains without compacting soils. The sides of the beds keep your valuable and shrub garden soil from being eroded or washed away during heavy rains. Gardeners are able to plant earlier in the season because the soil is warmer and better drained when it is above ground
level. By raising the soil level, raised garden beds can help reduce back strain when bending over to the bed. This is particularly helpful to us older gardeners or people with bad backs. And if the beds are built well, you will able to sit on the edge of the bed while weeding, and for some gardeners this is the biggest advantage of all. Raised garden beds can be made in a variety of different materials, and they can be made with relative ease. The most common height is 12in (30.48cm) which is the height of two deck boards or you can use old railway sleepers or concrete blocks. Although less aesthetically pleasing, they are inexpensive to source and easy to use. If building from old sleepers make sure to line the inside edge with plastic first so that the creosote painted on them will not damage the plants. Pre-manufactured raised bed gardening boxes also exist. It is best not to build the raised beds width wider that 4'(1.219mm) across. This is because it is easy to reach the centre of the bed from either side. Once they are built, raised beds will be easy to prepare for planting and to look after

Call 087 243 4211 or 01 452 3979 throughout the growing season. Root crops grow longer and straighter in medium-to-coarse-textured soils. Raised beds are well suited to a wide range of intensive gardening techniques such as intercropping, and successive plantings, use of plant supports, compact varieties and mixtures of food and ornamental and herbaceous plants. Their tidiness usually produces a very attractive and pleasing appearance. Once the soil is added and the bed is planted, make it a rule to never stand on the bed. Stepping on the bed will compact the soil, reduce aeration and impact root growth. Roots will need to travel down through the soil to access available nutrients which are essential to plant growth. If the soil is dense and compacted, much of the plant’s available energy is directed to the struggling roots. By lightening the soil, you will help root growth and, as a result, better vegetative growth. The simple test to check for soil density is to stick a finger into the soil. It should easily go down all the way to the third knuckle.

George Kelly By Padraig Conlon
GEORGE KELLY has been taking pictures of The Hoops for most of his life. As both a fan and photographer he’s seen it all, and usually from pitch side. InRovers recently caught up with George for a chat.
When did you start taking pictures of Rovers?
very angry about that. Then it was made even worse with the club being homeless for 20 years after the ground was sold, we even played a home game in Cork! No other club would have survived. The club being taken over by the fans was the best thing ever. All the European clubs are run like that and are owned by the fans.
I took my first photos in 1981. I was a fan, I was born and bred in Milltown and my father and Grandfather were Rovers supporters. I was brought to my first game in the 1960’s. I started studying photography in 1978. When I finished in ‘81 I asked the club for permission to take photos and after a while I started supplying pictures for the match programme. After I had kids Who is your favourite I went AWOL for about three years ever Rovers player? but I couldn’t stay away too long! In the 1980’s I used to love watching John Coady from the ‘Four In A Row’ team. He was fast, had a great left foot, he was a brilliant player. The ‘Four In A Row’ team from the 80’s would be my favourite, that team was very strong. Having been brought to Rovers games since the 60’s I’ve seen a lot of teams and in my opinion they were the best. I’ve great memories of that team.
Your most memorable matches? The Partizan game where Rovers became the first Irish team to qualify for the Europa League would definitely be one of them. The match with Spurs at White Hart Lane would be another. For 12 minutes after Ricer scored we were the kings! The four and a half thousand Rovers fans that were there that night will never forget it.

I’ve a few. The one of Ricer after he scored at White Hart Lane. I had been down in the photographers pit at that end in the first half and I usually switch at half time but thankfully that time I didn’t and I was able to get that shot.

They’ll go to the big international events but that’s it.
What do you think are the biggest changes that have happened in League Of Ireland football since you started going to matches?
I was trying to cheer and shoot at the same time! I was determined to capture that. I got a few from the Linfield games in ‘84 that I also like. The crowds back in the 60’s were much bigger than today. People After the move to Tallaght I got the had more time to go to games back very first goal to be scored there by then. If you could change anything about the League Of Ireland what would it be?
I do yes, it’s never over till it’s over. We’ve had our stuttery start but we’re playing well now, it’s football, the whole thing could turn on it’s head! We’re probably not going to win the league but we could win the Cup which would be great along with winning the Setanta Cup. There’s a long way to go yet.
Some of facilities in the grounds need to be improved. I’d love to see more local support for clubs as well as more media support. Some of the papers will have every result from all the English leagues and no For more of George’s photos see mention of Irish football. Ronan Finn
I know it’s a cliché but if you don’t shoot you don’t score. I’ve a lot more belief now, that part of my game has definitely improved and I’m getting more goals because of it.
By Padraig Conlon
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
RONAN FINN has had an excellent first half of the season, pitching in with some vital goals and putting in a Man Of The Match performance in the Setanta Cup Final win. We caught up with him ahead of the last match before the break to chat about the season so far and his love of fishing.
You’re having a great season so far you must be happy with your form?
all season, we know we have played well in a lot of games earlier in the season and not got what we deserved.
Thank you, I’m just happy to be scoring goals and doing something for the team to be honest with you. I think everyone is contributing and things are going well now. I am happy with my own form but I have to make sure I keep it going now and that I keep contributing to the team.
There’s a belief in the team, even when things weren’t going so well Trevor kept telling us that we have to believe in ourselves, that he believes in us. It was great to get that first away win and now we need to keep that going by taking three points against Limerick before we head into the break.
their start, they’re a good side though, very strong defensively, their best asset is they don’t concede many, solid side. I still believe we can win the title. There’s loads of football still to be played and the teams at the top at the moment are going to drop points, we just have to make sure we capitalize on any mistakes they do make.
Winning the league championship in 2011. That whole season actually was magnificent and to finish up as champions of Ireland topped it all off. Winning the 1st Division Championship with UCD as captain is another highlight. No one gave us a chance that year but we had a really strong team, we were a very young side but it was a dream season for us. Ciaran Kilduff was also there at the time, we had great players. Playing for the Republic of Ireland Under 21s is also a highlight for me.
Did you support any League Of Ireland side when you were a kid? No, no one in particular. My Da is from Longford and Barry Ferguson, who played for them, and Rovers later on, was a friend of the family so I’d always look out for their results. I’d go to games up in Tolka and Dalymount but there was no major support for the League Of Ireland in the area I grew up in.

Also I think they should spread the league about a bit, have more teams from outside Dublin in it, it’d Who is the toughest be great for the fans. I can’t say it’s not something I’d love to do in the future but all I’m interested in at the moment is doing well for Rovers, doing whatever I can to help them try and win the league. The more you give the team the more you get out of it, either with medals or different honours. If something was to happen in the future I'd have to deal with it then. Every player wants to test themselves at the highest level.
influence on me. Alan is still with Kevin’s; he’s an excellent coach.
If you could change anything about the League Of Ireland what would it be?
Fishing is my thing. I’ve no interest in golf at all. I love coarse fishing, I like to head down to Carrickmacross with all my gear for a couple of days, sleep in the bivvy bag. Only during the months of May to September, I’m not mad about fishing in the cold and rain!
I would make the league longer, not have it squashed into seven months, add an extra two teams to make it bigger. You work so hard to play matches, I can’t believe the season is almost half way over already. It’s not unreasonable to expect us to play more matches, in England outside the Premier
Martin Russell also who was my manager AT UCD when we won the 1st Division title, I learned a lot off him. I’ve had a few managers and I’ve learned something from all the managers I’ve played under.
Finally Ronan, away from football what do you like to do to relax?
