Welcome to Edition 42 of InTallaght
Leinster and Ireland flanker Shane Jennings spoke with us just before the start of what we all hope will be another successful season for the Province. A bona fide rugby legend he discussed life under new coach Matt O’Connor, the highlights of his career so far and his charity work off the pitch. Shane also has the distinction of being the very first rugby player to grace the cover of InTallaght Magazine! Empire Circus are another great band from Tallaght who have just released their self titled debut album, which they recorded in New York. We met up with the lads to discuss their new beginnings and find out why the new album has them feeling reenergised. Seana Kerslake is a local actress who only made her feature film debut last year in a role which led to her being nominated in the Best Actress category in this years IFTAs. She is currently staring in the play The Bruising Of Clouds and she spoke with us ahead of its arrival in the Civic Theatre next month, about her new project, her joy at the nomination and her plans for the future. As always please feel free to get in contact with us with any local news or charity events you’d like us to cover and we'll do our very best to help you.

Open Day At Tallaght Garda Station
On Saturday September 7, an Open Day was held at Tallaght Garda Station. According to Sergeant Margo Kennedy, the open day was organised to promote better relations between the people of Tallaght from all different ethnic backgrounds and their local Gardaí. This was the first time that such an Open Day took place at Tallaght and it proved be a very successful event. It strengthened existing relationships within the community while also enhancing new relationships. Tallaght Superintendent Peter Duff said “The day went really well and we were delighted to see so many people visiting the station”.
8
“The Garda Station belongs to the community, it is a State building being paid for by taxes – so we felt that it was a nice idea for people to be given the chance to what goes on in their Garda Station. It also allowed the community to meet with local Gardaí, learn about what we do and gather information.”

26th MS READaTHON
MS Ireland is encouraging schools in Dublin to sign up for the 26th MS READaTHON in the run up to Ireland’s biggest charity schools reading initiative. In 2012, students in Dublin City and County raised money to support more than 620 local people with MS and their families in the South West Dublin and Kildare Region. The young readers joined more than 16,000 children across Ireland in last year’s MS READaTHON. The event is the key annual fundraising campaign of Multiple Sclerosis Ireland, the services, information and research society supporting people affected by MS. Money raised in this years MS READaTHON will be spent in local communities on one-to-one support for those newly diagnosed or struggling with their MS; physiotherapy and exercise classes to help stay independent; and respite to help the person recharge and to give their family a break from providing around the clock care.
Paul Dietrich, MS READaTHON commented: “We aim to get children and young people immersed in reading, making time to read as many books as possible while raising funds for people with MS. This in turn has a positive impact on literacy, and the focus on reading books opens up a world of adventure, characters, plots and fun.”
The 26th MS READaTHON reading period will take place for one month from October 11th to November 11th 2013. Visit www.msreadathon.ie to find out more, check out reading lists for each age group, book reviews, competitions and enjoy great content from Irish authors.
Arthur's Day 2013
Arthur's day aims to showcase Ireland's creativity and talent from the world of music and culture at over 500 free pub music events across the country, and is set to return this October 26. The event was first organised in 2009 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Guinness brewing company by its owner Diageo plc. Guinness drinkers are expected to raise a glass to the memory of Arthur Guinness at 17:59 (5:59 pm), a reference to 1759, the year the Guinness Brewery was established. A variety of artists will play in pubs across the island of Ireland, from the best and brightest of Ireland’s musical talent including The Script, James Vincent McMorrow, The Original Rudeboys, Girl Band and Bouts to internationally acclaimed artists such as Manic Street Preachers, Emeli Sandé, Janelle Monae and the legendary Bobby Womack. Proceeds from all tickets, priced at €10, will go to the creative and cultural initiative, Arthur Guinness Projects.
All tickets for the Dublin gigs are already sold out but if you didn't manage to get one yourself, there will be free live music in several local pubs for Arthur's Day. Shaken Edge will perform at The Cuckoo's Nest from 5.30pm, Fluffy Jumpsuits at The Dragon Inn from 6.00pm, Edges and Redmond at The Kingswood Lodge, also at 6.00pm, Manilla Strings at Rathfarnham Orchard at 8pm and finally InTallaght favourite Ray Scully will take to the stage at The Firhouse Inn at 9.00pm. 12 and the environment, three of the issues which the Mayor had outlined as priorities his year as Mayor.
Let the Lions Roar
The newly reformed Tallaght Lions Club are looking for new members from the local community to enable them to carry out important fundraising and charitable work throughout the community. Lions Clubs plan and participate in a wide variety of service projects that meet the international goals of Lions Clubs International as well as the needs of their local communities. Examples include donations to hospices or community campaigns such as Message In A Bottle, an initiative which places a plastic bottle with critical medical information inside the refrigerators of vulnerable people.
Money is also raised for international purposes. Some of this is donated in reaction to events such as the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Other money is used to support international campaigns, coordinated by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), such as Sight First and Lions World Sight Day, which was launched in 1998 to draw world media attention to the plight of sight loss in the third world.
only stipulation to membership is that the applicant is over 18.
Tallaght Lions Club are looking to boost their membership to enable them to take on new projects in the Tallaght area. They are about to launch their Message In A Bottle campaign and hope to run a Christmas food appeal in conjunction with St Vincent De Paul. Campaigns around diabetes and suicide awareness are in the pipeline but with manpower in such short supply this has not been possible up until now. Chairwoman of the Tallaght Lions Joan Tattan Dennis explained that the Lions club is a great organisation and that the work it can do within the community is vitally important. “There are over 85 clubs in the Republic and 10 in Northern Ireland and as Tallaght has such a large population we would like that to be reflected in the size of our club, we need more manpower to join our small but enthusiastic group”
If you would like to know more about the work of the Tallaght Lions you can call Joan on 086 269 7550. If you or a member of your family would like to participate in the Message In A Bottle scheme please Lions Clubs are non political, non contact your local health care sectarian and fully inclusive to all professional or Joan at the members of the community the number above.
Mayor Looney establishes new fund
Mayor Dermot Looney has surrendered €7,000 of the €45,000 Mayoral allowance that he is entitled to, with Deputy Mayor Eamon Tuffy giving €3,000 of his allowance to create a new €10,000 fund. They fund will be open to community organisations working in the area of youth and sport, older people
Stephen Hayes, Phil Kealy, Marie Peelo & Joe Kavanagh.
Fundraising for Pieta
A cheque for €4300 was presented to 'PIETA HOUSE' following the recent Fundraising Night at The Cuckoo's Nest organised by Phil Kealy. Pieta House provides a free, therapeutic approach to people who are in suicidal distress and those who engage in selfharm. Pieta House Tallaght is located in St Thomas's Church in Jobstown, with branches in Lucan, Ballyfermot, Finglas, Limerick and Roscrea. See www.pieta.ie for more.
Dermot explains “The most important reason for doing this is to allow our local community organisations and clubs to apply for the kind of small grants (€250 or €500) which can make all the difference in their day-to-day activities or events. But I wanted to make a political point by taking a pay cut too.”
This cut runs in tandem with the decision of Mayor Looney and 13 others on South Dublin County Council to refuse expenses for conferences at home and abroad. Such savings were diverted into providing homeless accommodation in the county.
Never Alone charity single now available for download from iTunes store
Never Alone was written by Luke S Clerkin and Gavin Doyle, due to the tragic loss of a friend during the year. It was decided that all proceeds of the single would go to TeenLine Ireland which is a freephone helpline for teenagers, in need of someone to talk to, no matter how big or small the problem. They banded together with other local musicians to form the Never Alone Collective who have been busking in Temple Bar to raise money and awareness for the cause. Download it now for only 99c.

INTERVIEW
he is quite similar to Joe in his emphasis on technical ability and defence. It's pretty exciting to be around and keeps everyone on their toes. We have to make a good start this year because the last few years we haven't started great, for whatever reason, we've got to give Matt as much help as possible.

Is it true that because of your contacts with Leicester Tigers the Leinster management asked you to get info on the new coach? The Leinster rugby team is currently going through something of a golden age. Three Heineken Cups, One League title and an Amlin Cup in recent years has seen the team overtake deadly rivals Munster as top dogs in Ireland.
One man who has played a vital part in the success during this spell is Shane Jennings. An excellent flanker and warrior for the cause, he has been nothing short of a credit to the jersey. It's fair to say Jennings really announced himself in the 2006/07 season by helping Leicester Tigers challenge for three titles in England and Europe. Playing at the top of his game, the Dubliner, who was runner-up for the Guinness Premiership Player of the Year award, was destined to be called up for duty for Ireland’s 2007 summer tour to Argentina during which he gained his first cap. Unfortunately an injury ruled him out of contention for the Rugby World Cup.
We discussed his career to date, Leinster's new coach and the upcoming Heineken Cup campaign, which sees the team in the socalled “Group Of Death.”
How has preseason training been?
It's been great, everything's gone really well, there's a great atmosphere. Some aspects of it are the same as other years, things like the strength and conditioning training don't change but obviously this year with us having a new coach In 2007 he rejoined Leinster, where and backroom staff we've been he had made his debut against working on new ways of playing, Swansea in 2001. weekends free, like most other people! There are huge physical benefits to it as in you get leaner and your body isn't having to recover from taking knocks every week plus you put in the hard fitness work that you're going to need for the season. I personally like it. I've had a great summer, I got married, and had a great holiday.
Well they went down many different avenues of research but yes I did ask some of the people I knew at the club about him and they all spoke very highly of Matt and his abilities as a coach.
The management had already met with him and were very impressed, I think they just wanted another bit of info and Leo and myself were able to make a few enquiries. But he's proved himself with his record at the Brumbies and Leicester, both very high-pressure environments with big expectations. To have had four and five years working at those places is impressive.
Having lost Johnny Sexton and Isa Nacewa are you happy with the How has new coach Matt players that Leinster have O Connor settled in? brought in this summer? I've been very impressed with him; he has a different way of playing compared to Joe and Checks, some different strategies. The players have had to get used to new calls, some new systems, but everyone is working hard and learning, they can see what he's trying to do and everyone is buying into it. Actually
Yes I am, obviously the two lads have played a huge part in our success in the recent years. The players we've brought in are all very good. I know Mike (McCarthy) well from having played against a few times recently and he has always impressed me. Jimmy (Goppearth) has settled in well

and of course Zane (Kirchner) is I'd go to a lot of Ireland games on the way, I don't know when while I was in Mary's, stand in the he is actually joining up with us old schoolboy section. but I'm really looking forward to having him as part of the set up. As well as this we also have the lads from the Academy coming through who are all really good players as well. Jack McGrath has come on so much in the last two years, as have Ben Marshall and Jordi Murphy. Dan Levy, who I've played alongside is another one, it's great for the team as there's good competition for places. Those younger lads are after places and us older lads don't want to give up our places to them, it's a changing environment. Likewise when it comes to trophies, I don't want to see any other teams lifting trophies. We've got to have that desire.
How did your great love of rugby begin?
Through my brothers and my dad I suppose. I have two older brothers who played it so I was following them really. Anything they did I wanted to do! When I started out in St Colmcille's in Knocklyon there wasn't really much rugby in the school.
I played Gaelic football there but I wasn't very good! I played mini rugby in the community games for Colmcille's but it wasn't until I got to St Mary's that I got to play at a high level and progressed through the school teams. Mary’s is a very rugby focused school, so I played in their junior and senior side and then had ambitions to play for Ireland schools and Leinster schools, which happened.
Who were your favourite players when you were young?
Zinzane Brooke, Jean-Baptiste Lafond, Laurent Cabannes. I used to really like the French team when I was young.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
I suppose my brothers and my dad were a huge influence but aside from them I'd say it was one of my teachers in St Mary's, Richie Hughes. He was my Under 13 coach and he was a massive influence, not just on me but all the lads in the school.

Would it be fair to say that Leinster have ended up a very hard pool in the Heineken Cup this year?
Yes it is! The old “Group Of Death!” It's always the group of death every year if you ask me, it's bizarre! Going away to France is always so tough, this year we'll have to go and play the defending champions which is going to be great.
We know a lot about the Ospreys and what a good side they are after playing them so much in the last few years. The Heineken Cup is always so competitive, getting out of the pool is almost as good as winning it! We have to concentrate on getting good momentum early on. It's all very exciting, I'm really looking forward to it.

What is your opinion on the new scrum laws that are coming in?
We get new rules changes happening every year so you get used to it. This new scrum thing is a good idea. Instead of the “crouch, touch, set” sequence from last season the packs are required to bind in advance and they're not allowed push until the ball is in. It'll take the pressing out and make it safer. Anything to make the game safer is fine by me! Hopefully we'll see less impact injuries because of this change.
Do you have any plans made for when you retire from rugby?
What advice would you give to young rugby players starting out in their careers?
If you enjoy playing the game at that age and if you're willing to learn as much as possible, then make the most of any advice you get from your coaches and educate yourself about the game.
Would you agree that Leinster has now changed from being just a south Dublin type thing to more of a province wide experience?
I don't think it ever was just a south Dublin sport in Leinster. It's great now because the interest is defiNot really no, I haven't thought too nitely growing around the province, much about it to be honest with we see this for ourselves when we you. I'm back studying again. I visit for training camps etc. don't know if I would like to get into coaching when I'm finished, maybe The make up of the team is a great some area of business. You don't mix of players from all over Leinster, really know what can happen. Carlow, Louth, not just Dublin, with At the moment all my focus is on playing.
Have Leinster any plans to bring in some signings?
I have no idea. My job is just to play rugby and not pick players! As I was saying earlier we have great competition for places now and a great coach in Matt in charge and our academy is producing the players we need so there's a lot of faith in the squad we have.
the international players as well. We need the whole province behind us, as this is where the players will come from in the future, we need all feeders.
Finally Shane, you are involved with the charity Ronald McDonald House, would you like to tell our readers about it?
The House provides accommodation and a caring and supportive environment for families from all over the country who must stay in Dublin for extended periods while their children are ill and undergoing treatment in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.
Ronald McDonald House is an important resource for parents who are caring for children who are seriously ill. Having to be out of home for long periods of time to be close to their children can cause major stress emotionally and financially, this is where RMHC steps in.

Empire Circus

INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon
Who wrote most of the album or do you all share the writing?
All: Yeah, we all do the writing. Neil: Someone might come in with
a bit of an idea and then we’ll all get together in a room and… change everything! David: I think the best songs come from where everyone has the freedom of doing whatever they want.
Empire Circus is a four piece alternative rock band from Tallaght who have just released a self-titled debut album.
They have drawn comparisons with Arcade Fire and Two Door Cinema Club yet retain their own musical identity. Previously known as “Stand” they have been together since 1994 and spent seven years living and working in the US before returning home in 2008. They consist of Neil Eurelle (Vocals), David Walsh (Bass) Alan Doyle (Guitar) and Brian Ellis (Drums.) InTallaght Magazine met them to find out more.
Could you tell our readers You release your self a bit about the backtitled debut album ground of the band? this month?
David: Three of us were in another We had started writing a couple of band for a long time and it had gone stale. We’re trying to move away from the old. After a long period of time we realised we just needed something fresh. We had a change of band members, Brian came in which gave us a nice injection of energy. We started writing new songs and the songs were sounding really different, much more energetic, and much brighter.
We were a darker band before, a bit more introverted. When Brian came along he brightened things up, we were happy again to be writing and playing. We had been at a point where we were thinking of giving up but then we really started enjoying it again.
songs and just thought let’s do an album. We have a record company in the States who funded it and we recorded in Brooklyn, we’re absolutely delighted with it. It happened so fast that we were really excited to hear the record; it was like a third party record! It’s a debut record for us and we’re excited about our new start as that’s what this is for us. We are having the album launch on September 28 in Grand Social so anyone reading this please feel free to come along, you’re more than welcome! Neil: We’ve had a few singles off the album out already. The first was in April called True Believer and the second came out in June called There is a Light. Both singles are on You Tube. We did an EP at the end
of July and now we’re all set for the album. We’re so excited; there are so many good bands out there these days it’s harder to get noticed. The best thing to do is stick on the album in your car and come and see us in a show and you’ll hear what we’re about. David: We’ve never had a show that was this entertaining or energetic; I think that’s what this album gives us. We just want people to hear the record and at least give it one chance. If they don’t like it fair enough but at least listen to it.
How would you describe your sound?
Neil: We’re an electronic rock
band, we use a lot of keyboards and loops but it’s still very much based around drums, bass, guitar with vocals and harmonies. Crosby Stills and Nash meets Bjork!
Who are your influences?
Brian: I think the way that music
has gone now there’s so much available, it’s probably hard to pin influences down to a couple of bands. Like Neil was saying there’s a ton of vocals and harmonies so bands like Crowded House, Arcade Fire I suppose. Neil: We’d also listen to a lot of Bruce Springsteen or U2 and Wilco.
What do you think of the current Irish music scene?
Alan: There are some great bands
here at the moment, everyone’s in a band now! Remember years ago it was kind of a big thing “Oh my cousin’s friend is in a band, he plays the guitar,” “Oh really! Wow!” Whereas now it’s like “I know this guy who’s not in a band!” David: I think there are some brilliant bands here as well but to some degree they’re getting lost, the way everything is being made so instant now. It’s not necessarily the best bands who are coming to the top, it’s the bands who are best at Tweeting, Facebooking and You Tube-ing, which is a bit unfortunate. I suppose the flip side to this is that all those things are available to them and they can market themselves to a certain degree.

Empire Circus
How would you describe one of your live shows?
Alan: Energetic, loud, quite vocal
heavy and interactive. I’d like to think that the majority of people who end up in a room where we’re playing will leave there happy and want to see us again.
they’re doing. Foals as well, wouldn’t mind doing a show with U2 either! Alan: I’d be terrified we’d turn up and they’d be horrible, never meet your idols eh?! A U2 gig would be too f*****g big anyway!
What’s the meaning Some of our readers may behind the name ? know you guys from the local music school you run, Pure Music. Are you all involved in it? David: Yes we are. We started the school in 2008 because we wanted to do something when we weren’t doing doing band stuff. A few of us used to teach when we lived in New York and we loved it so when we came back we just decided to go for it. It means we’re still involved with music; it’s what we’re good at, it’s what we love. I had got lessons when I was a kid and most of them were so boring it took all the goodness out of it! We try to get the kids into the practical side of things, making it interesting for them. We try to show them why we love music.
Is there anyone you would all love to play with?
David: The National or Bon
Iver, they look and sound like proper bands, unlike most of them nowadays. Neil: Arcade Fire, I like the way they are who they are and they stick to that. Everything seems to be quite real with them; music fans really appreciate a band when they feel it’s something tangible, I know I admire that. Brian: Band of Horses, I love what
22
Neil: We were just trying to find
two words that were powerful. We had lived in New York and recorded the album in Brooklyn so we took the “Empire” out of Empire State as a nod to that. And the “Circus” comes from the fact that we want people to have fun, be happy and there are elements of theatre in our shows.
ENERGETIC, LOUD... INTERACTIVE.
Finally lads, did growing up in Tallaght influence your music in any way?
David: Yeah we learned that we’d
like to get out of Tallaght! No I’m only joking. I suppose though when you are from a working class area, all joking aside, you do want what’s different, you do want to move away. I think that’s why we moved to America because it’s different. People were asking why didn’t we move to the UK but we just felt it was too much like home. Alan: We always swim against the tide, when people are leaving we come back! There are references in some of our songs to the general sh*t state of our country but not Tallaght.
Their album launch party will take place in Grand Social on September 28. It is available to buy on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon & Spotify from September 12.
THE ALBUM IS NOW ALSO EXCLUSIVELY AVAILABLE FROM PLAY ON LEVEL 3 OF THE SQUARE TALLAGHT. Special thanks to SHOW Nightclub for the use of their venue for this photoshoot.

Seána Kerslake

INTERVIEW
It was great for me, ignorance is bliss as it was my first time doing a film so I didn't really know what to expect and I had no script, which made it easier. The fact we knew nothing about the plot or what was to come next was very difficult. You just had to forget about it. Some scenes were particularly challenging, we weren't given time to prepare and just had to throw ourselves into every scene.

Seána In Character With The Bruising Of Clouds Co-Stars Ryan Andrews & Ian Lloyd
Seána Kerslake is a 22 year old actress from Tymonville.
Last year she appeared in the movie Dollhouse, for which she received an IFTA nomination for Best Actress. Currently appearing in the play The Bruising of Clouds, which is due to hit the Civic Theatre in October, InTallaght Magazine spoke with her about the play, her first big breakout role and her excitement at getting to act in her home town theatre.
First things first Seana, tell us all about the play The Bruising of Clouds.
It's basically a three hander, with myself and two other actors Ian Lloyd and Ryan Andrews. It's a Dublin love story, my character Kelly initially starts going out with one of the lads. It's about an unlikely couple falling into each other, falling over each other and trying to help each other back up. The rehearsals have been going great and it's wonderful to be getting to work with Fishamble the production company.
How did you get the part in Dollhouse?
I was going to weekly drama classes in Clondalkin with my agent Maureen V Ward of Talented Kids & MVW Talent Agency. Maureen told us to prepare monologues as Nick McGinley the casting director was going to sit in on our class.
I ended up messing up my monologue and decided to get back up after a few others had done theirs. Nick though called me aside and asked me to do some improv with Johnny Ward who played Eanna in the film. I didn't think I did great, I think I'd be cringing if I saw it now! How did you get the part? Nick asked me some questions on It was just simply Jim (Culleton camera and then sent it off to director) had seen me in Dollhouse, Kirsten (Sheridan, director) and he contacted my agent Maureen Maureen (Hughes). and asked her would I be interested in doing it.It's my first time doing After that the casting was strange big theatre. as we didn't use a script. It was a long audition process. When I first
met Kirsten, we went for a few lunches and she asked me loads of questions about myself, and I was wondering when I was going to get to audition. I didn't realise that this was all part of the process, I didn't know what was going on! The week before the cast were due to go to Brittas Bay to do a week of prep work I found out I had the part of Jeannie.
What was the experience of making the movie like?
It was amazing, we got to go away and live together for a week in Brittas before filming started to get to know each other, which was crazy! We just slotted in together, we were a very close bunch of people. It was brilliant craic! But there was method in the madness as it made everything more lucid. The crew said they'd never been on a set that was so laid back before.
You got great reviews for your performance in that movie, how did you feel when you got nominated for the IFTA for Best Actress?
It was mad, I woke up one morning to see all these text messages from all the cast and I was just so shocked! It was the icing on a giant cake. I genuinely wasn't disappointed not to win it as I didn't even expect to be nominated. To even get the part in the film was great, as not many people get to act in something so experimental. After the film came out we had such an amazing time because we got to places like Berlin, Prague, Ukraine and Hungary, I was so very lucky.
Which do you prefer doing stage or screen?
I know this may sound clichéd but I'll do wherever the good work is. I've probably got a little bit more experience of film. I can't really say which I have a preference for. I just love being on set and rehearsing for a project. I love the first reading of the script and how the character first appears to you and then you get under their skin. I enjoy watching and learning what makes people tick and questioning why is that character the way they are?
InTallaghtMaster42_Layout 1 18/09/2013 22:36 Page 25
25
Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
My parents because they have supported me and allowed me to take this as my job. They also supported me to go to college and get a degree, they are definitely the biggest influence on my career. Acting wise it would be Kirsten, Kate, I've been lucky to have been surrounded by such good people. There's not really been any one actor or actress I have been influenced by. I love Jamie Foxx, Leonardo Di Caprio and Shirley Temple.
What are your plans for the next few months?
After Bruising Of Clouds I'm doing a film with Emmet Kirwin called Skirting Pebbles. Then I'm doing a course in the Factory for the year which I'm really looking forward to as it means I can work and study. It helps to keep me focused!
Finally Seรกna are you looking forward to performing in your home town next month?
Yes I am, it'll be mad. When it comes closer to the time when we are opening in Tallaght it'll hit me! It's mad seeing the poster outside the Civic. It was weird seeing myself in posters for Dollhouse as well. There was a giant sticker of me on the ground at the cinema in the Square in Tallaght, and my friends would send me pictures of themselves sitting down beside my head! There should be plenty of family and friends there, hopefully there'll be no heckling from them!
The Bruising Of Clouds comes to Civic Theatre Tallaght from Tuesday October 8 to Saturday October 12. To book go to www.civictheatre.ie

Laura O’Dowd Clubs & Societies Officer My name is Laura O’Dowd and I am the Clubs and Societies Officer of IT Tallaght Student Union. This is a part time role which means I study for my degree while fulfilling my duties for the Student Union. I am in third year studying Advertising and Marketing Communications and have had a vital role in the running of the drama society since my first year. As clubs and societies officer my job is to offer support to the students who run the clubs and societies within the college.
, es ur ns t ic io e P etit s or nt p e M m v r ike Fo s, Co ng E oL i T w Ne pcom rget & U ’t Fo n Do
Getting involved in clubs and societies is an important part of college life and there is currently a wide range of clubs and societies available to all full time students of IT Tallaght. Getting involved really helps to enhance the student experience and I would strongly encourage all students, especially first years to join at least one club or society this year. You will not regret it. Joining a club or society is a great way to meet people outside of the classroom and meet people with similar interests to you. Clubs and societies provide students the opportunity to learn a new skill and pick up a new hobby very easily and involventment is a great combat of the stress of college work and study. an even balance between studying and socialising is very important in my opinion and sometimes it is nice to have a welcoming distraction.
With over 30 clubs and societies available to students, there really is something for everyone. These clubs and societies have done brilliantly at regional and national levels. Last year the Drama Society ran a sold out performance of ‘Cash on Delivery’ in the Civic Theatre and placed second in the category of Best Event at the national BICS Awards. The radio society ran their annual Radio Weeks and raised over €1000 for Arc Cancer Research. On the sports side of things the GAA Club, Hockey Club and Rugby Club all reached league finals with the Rugby Club winning their leage final over Carlow IT. The list of Clubs and Societies available is ever growing, with a new Music Society already in the process of setting up. It is so easy to set up your own club or society and i am here to offer any support that students need to develop any new clubs or societies that are being set up. If you’re interested in getting involved and joining a club or society sign up days are happening on the 24th and 25th of September. I strongly encourage you to join at least one!

THE CALL By Rachel Lynch
Director Brad Anderson had a tough task in turning a movie about a 911 call centre into an action packed thriller.
He enrolled the help of Academy award winning actress Halle Berry to take on the leading role.
The movie gathers speed almost the instant it begins. As we the viewer become accustomed to the runnings of an emergency 911 centre we are introduced to Jordan Turner played by Berry.
Jordan is a well liked member of the LAPD call centre and it is clear from the get go she is one of the best at her job, she deals with emergency after emergency almost effortlessly. That is until she receives a distressing call from Leah
Tempelton, a young girl home alone and frightened about an intruder trying to break into her home. The next hour of the film is full of heart pounding moments which will not only have you glued to your seat but also covering your eyes. This movie was made for the tagline thriller.
tells almost the entire movie with exceptions of the fantastic ending scene.
It is no surprise that Berry has already been nominated for two awards for her role as Jordan. She was nominated for Best Actress for the Black Entertainment Television Awards. She was also nominated for Choice Movie Actress in a Drama at the Teen Choice The pacing of this film is excellent Awards. and there will certainly be no toilet breaks. This movie moves so fast you can’t afford to miss five minutes. Once we find out who the kidnapper is the plot of the whole movie unravels but it’s the ending that is really something special and something I certainly didn’t see coming.
I personally rate this movie extremely highly but would warn against viewing the official trailer as it

THE HOT SPROCKETS Comin On

By Padraig Conlon
EMPIRE CIRCUS Empire Circus By Linn Heldal
Empire Circus’ self-titled debut album was released this month by the management and record label Paper Scissors Rock.
The Dublin based Indie Pop Rock fourpiece may seem to have appeared out of the blue, but in reality they have been living together in the US for 7 years, recording and playing music full time.
The lads returned to Dublin in 2008, and they spent the spring and summer of 2012 writing and creating the music that resulted in the 12 tracks of the album. It was recorded under the supervision of Producer Bryce Goggin, who is famous for producing big names, such as the Ramones.
Their sound focuses on the thrill of rhythm and melody and the album has a hint of electro feel to it. The mix between electronic futuristic sounds and the traditional sounds of the guitar, bass and drums makes it very interesting and fresh.
The album hits its stride already at track two, with the debut single True Believer. As the title promises it’s a positive, yet emotional tune, with great hit potential, which sets the standard for the rest of the album.
The time spent in the US has clearly affected their sound. There are many elements of mainstream American Pop Rock to be heard. This comes forward in A Day In The Life Of A Super Hero, a transatlantic tune with instantly catchy lyrics and melody. I think there is a high possibility that this up-tempo tune will be making radio waves very soon. The American pop formula can also be heard in Planting Seeds and in the catchy guitar hook of All I Need.
There Is A Light, which was also released as a single, is my favorite track of the album. The balance between the ballad tinged piano and electro sound makes it very catchy and it’s a strong introduction to the album. The beautiful lyrics in the ballad Sails Set For The Sky makes singer Neil Eurell’s vocals stand out. The last track, In Dreams, has a bit of a Little Green Cars vibe with its powerful chorus, the harmonies and backing vocals-a great way to finish off. With their upbeat and radio friendly sound I can predict that it is only a matter of time before Empire Circus will take on the Irish Music Scene. The band promise you will get the urge to get up, get crazy, dance and sing like never before -and that might be exactly what you will get up to if you catch them live at the album launch show on September 28 in Grand Social..
Dublin blues rockers The Hot Sprockets are rapidly becoming one of the country's most original and phenomenal live bands. Even though I've only seen them play a couple of times, they're still one of the best Irish live acts I've seen in the last few years. I'd recommend them to any of our music loving readers, if you get the chance please do check them out, you won't be disappointed. Which brings us on to their latest single release Comin On; a belter of a tune that further enhances their growing reputation. As the saying goes, making comparisons can spoil your happiness, and not wanting to wreck the buzz I'd say Comin On reminds me of early Kings of Leon, back when they were a proper rockin' band playing their upbeat mixture of Southern Rock and Blues. Comin On is a happy energetic number that'll stick in your head whether you want it to or not. With its jangily guitars, harmonicas and catchy foot tapping sing-along chorus, it sounds like it only came out of the Mississippi Swamp last Tuesday week.
The band have also put together a wonderful video to go with the single which you can watch on their website: www.thehotsprockets.com

UPC HORIZON By Colm O’Muirí
A new TV experience on the Horizon
UPC launched their new Horizon TV service in August, after months of trials with over 1000 testers. The new service is another step in next
generation television in Ireland following UPC’s €500 million investment in its fibre powered network. Ireland is the latest country to receive Horizon TV following in the footsteps of the Netherlands and Switzerland. Horizon offers customers many new features some of which include being able to record four programmes at once while also watching a fifth.
Another great feature is that Horizon will also give the users suggestions for programmes and films they may be interested in based on what they have being watching, similar to the service provided by Netflix.
Existing UPC customers have to pay for the upgrade to Horizon although new customers will receive the box for free and will also get most of the packages at a reduced cost for the first six months. The cheapest package is €66 a month with the dearest being €80 a month, although both are available for €50 a month for the first six months.
Speaking at the launch Mark Coan, Vice president of Sales and marketing at UPC said; “When it comes to TV, UPC is Ireland’s leading innovator. Today we’re taking television to the next level with the introduction of Horizon TV.” He continued “UPC Horizon TV will completely transform consumers’ TV experience, by doing two extraordinary things, bringing Irish consumers closer to the TV they love in better and new ways, and putting all their services together in one clever box. These services combine to make a unique product which is unmatched by any other TV provider.” Horizon offers the customers the chance to have over 100 channels including 20 HD channels which includes major broadcasters RTÉ, Sky, TG4 and BBC.The service has 27 great apps to choose from also some of which are Youtube, Facebook and Twitter. It also features some key local apps as well with The Irish Times and Score.ie. For more information on Horizon visit www.UPC.ie

ASSASSIN’S CREED BLACK FLAG By Cathal Jennings
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a free-roaming action adventure game for both current gen and next gen consoles.
Players will take the role of young captain Edward Kenway whose exploits earn the respect of pirate legends like Blackbeard, but draw him into an ancient war that may destroy everything the pirates have built.
A sequel to 2012's Assassin's Creed III, the game will see the player take on the role of an Abstergo Industries research analyst as they explore the story of Edward Kenway – father to Haytham Kenway, grandfather to Ratonhnhaké:ton and an ancestor of Desmond Miles. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will be set primarily on and around the islands in the Caribbean Sea during the golden age of piracy in the early 18th century, with three major cities consisting of Havana, Nassau and Kingston. About 60% of the game will take place on land; players can explore 50 locations ranging from fisherman villages, plantations, jungles, forts, islands, Mayan ruins and exotic coconut islands. Furthermore, there are around 75 beaches and
sandbanks, which can hold various treasures and marooned sailors to add to Edward's crew.
Other activities include hunting, harpooning and exploring underwater environments. The game aims to blend between its land and aquatic experiences seamlessly, to the point where players can simply dive off Edward's ship, swim to the shore and explore the land, as well as dive under the surface to loot underwater ship wrecks. Ubisoft also mentioned that 'exploration is the key' and would be the focus point in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
View points will also return in Black Flag. As in the previous games, view points have to be synchronized so as to reveal information about an area and its surroundings. Further, they will also serve the function of fast-travel locations.
Black Flag's combat has been upgraded to include free aiming. While previous installments relied on the game's built-in auto aim, in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, players will be able to just aim and fire, similar to third-person shooters.
Dual-wielding weapons has also been implemented, with Edward being able to carry four flintlock pistols and be able to use them all together, chaining up to four gunshots into a combo of attacks to take down more enemies. Aside from the pistols and his hidden blades, Edward can equip dual cutlass swords and chain their attacks together. Other weapons include a blowpipe with multiple effected projectiles and rope darts. Accompanying this, the stealth system has been stated to return and to be encouraged in the game. Full-on underwater combat system has also been developed for Black Flag, including animals such as sharks and whales. The multiplayer aspect of Black Flag will include cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes from previous games, alongside new maps and new characters.
Players will also be able to upgrade Edward Kenway's vessel – the Jackdaw – through pillaging, taking over enemy ships and completing missions, granting the Jackdaw with new weapons and abilities. Of these, weapon upgrades include round shot, heat shot, chain shot, mines, mortars, swivel guns and a ram. Edward can recruit crewmembers for the Jackdaw via side missions that include bar fights, and most importantly, through the battle missions, but the crew members are also expected to die in the game while braving storms and boarding enemy ships, forcing Edward to continuously recruit more members. The crew themselves can also be upgraded with new outfits, allowing for even more customization. The game will also have six different enemy archetypes at sea that all behave in vastly different ways and require the player to have different upgrades to deal with them.

NFS: RIVALS By Cathal Jennings
In Need for Speed Rivals, Ghost Studios isn't confining players to rigid multiplayer matches, nor are they subjecting them to the chaos of a racing MMO.
Instead, players are introduced to a world where friends are seamlessly integrated into the world as they progress through its campaigns via a new feature called All Drive. Players take on the roles of either a racer or a cop, progressing through missions and challenges in the open world of Redview County. As they move through the world, friends also playing the game will be introduced without matchmaking lobbies or loading screens. In a hands-on E3 demo, Ghost Studios showcased a scenario where six players are in the same world three cops and three racers. Each started at various places on the map with both AI cops and competitors. Racers could choose to challenge other players or access campaign races, while cops could choose to engage in specific missions or chase down random passers by AI or otherwise.
Spurned largely by the fact that I had a limited time to acclimate to the All Drive system, as a cop I found it difficult to discern human players vs. AI players but I suppose that's the point. Both cops and racers have a set of objectives during any race or pursuit, which grants them points and multipliers. These goals in-
clude things like "escape a pursuit" or "drift for 30 seconds" and get more difficult as you progress. For racers, the longer they evade police and move through goals, the higher their "heat score" and multiplier level. For cops, a racer with a higher heat score will yield more points and can be dispatched with via a variety of methods. Like Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted before it, Need for Speed Rivals outfits both cops and racers with tech to either apprehend or evade other players and AI, like EMP and spike strips. Racers have a new tool in the form of hideouts, which allow the player to enter a safe space and avoid apprehension, though at the sacrifice of a quickly diminishing multiplier.
What is most striking about the game, however, is its incredible visuals provided by DICE's Frostbite 3 engine. The vehicles are rendered with meticulous detail and lighting effects. Rain-soaked car bodies reflect beautifully from the sun and the smallest particles of spray from your wheels as they roll over a wet road add to a rich and detailed environment.
With All Drive and its new tablet integration, Need for Speed Rivals seeks to harness next-gen power to create seamless multiplayer and single player experiences. Whether or not it can do so in a way that's intuitive and cohesive remains to be seen, but it's off to a great start.

PEUGEOT 2008 CROSSOVER

By Rachel Lynch
Peugeot's all new 2008 compact crossover has arrived in Ireland, priced from €18,595.
That undercuts its direct rivals from Nissan, Renault and Opel. The cheapest diesel model costs €19,515 and all versions fall into Band A for VRT and annual road tax. From first glance the new model does indeed look like a big car due to its chunky styling but it’s actually not much bigger than a super mini and it’s front wheel drive only. What it does aim to do is offer us something of the SUV practicality but in a more compact body.
Peugeot have really done themselves proud with this model and the top spec styling proves this. The headlights are a unique feature of the car and they really sit well with the simple grille. The sills and the bot-

Standard specification across the line-up includes LED daytime running lights, air conditioning, ESP

The drive itself is comfortable and in some aspects that’s all the buyer wants. The steering is quite light and with the high positioning of the diving seat you will feel quite at ease when travelling on either short or long distance journeys. There are a lot of similarities with this model and the Peugeot 208 but the Crossover has its own personality and style.
2008 is the first vehicle produced by Peugeot that has been designed and developed jointly by several international markets. Engineers and stylists from Paris, Shanghai, China and Sao Paulo, Latin America worked together to create the vehicle.

200 Tesco jobs with new store openings
Tesco Ireland has announced that it will create over 200 jobs over the next year by opening new stores and mobile phone shops.
New programme launched to bridge gap between education and jobs in animation and games industries
A new programme has been launched, designed to assist graduates to take the step from education to developing careers in Ireland’s growing animation and games industries. Thirteen students from Ballyfermot College are participating in ‘The Bridge’ programme which is based in the Guinness Enterprise Centre, Dublin. The initiative is collaboration between Ballyfermot College, the Guinness Enterprise Centre, Dublin Business Innovation Centre (Dublin BIC) and creative industry heavyweights: Havok, JAM Media, Brown Bag Films and Riot Games. It aims to nurture key talent for current and future industry needs in the area of animation, games and related areas like VFX (visual effects).
The programme was initiated in June 2013 in response to a skills shortage in the animation and games industries, with 44% of companies in these and related sectors citing recruitment and staffing as their main business concern. Demand for talent is now outweighing the supply, with many companies having to hire animators outside of Ireland to support their work. This has come to the fore recently as the Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Enterprise (Minister Bruton) has increased by 700 the employment permits for skilled overseas employees to off-set the shortage in Ireland. If projected growth is realised, more talent needs to enter the industry in Ireland.
The company said 80 jobs will be created by the end of this year in its previously announced €70m capital investment programme. This includes 48 jobs at new express stores in Douglas Road, Cork; College Green, Dorset Street, Leonard's Corner and Glasnevin Avenue in Dublin.
The company will create 14 jobs at new Tesco mobile phone shops in Maynooth, Tallaght, Drogheda, Clearwater, Wilton and Clare Hall.
It is also recruiting 18 graduates for its graduate and job training schemes. Tesco said another 120 jobs will be created when new stores in Dundalk and Honeypark in Dun Laoghaire opening next year.
H&M's August sales beat estimates
Hennes & Mauritz, Europe’s secondbiggest retailer, reported monthly sales that beat analysts’ estimates, sending its shares to a record high. Revenue at stores and operations open at least a year rose 4% in August compared with the same month last year, the Stockholm-based company said today. Total sales in August climbed 14%, the retailer said, beating estimates for 12.6% growth.

RaboDirect announced as title sponsor of The Tweeties
RaboDirect has been announced as the title sponsor of The Tweeties. The #RaboTweeties is the first awards show to celebrate the best of Twitter in Ireland; the people, celebrities, businesses and organisations who use twitter in meaningful, creative and inspirational ways.
The #RaboTweeties will give Ireland’s Twitter users the chance to have their say on who and what makes them Tweet. Tweeters can nominate a person or organisation they follow for an award by using a special hashtag designated for each category. People can vote in many categories including: Best Celebrity (vote using #TweetieCelebrity), Sport (#TweetieSport), Business (#TweetieBusiness), News & media (#TweetieNews), Best Charity (#TweetieCharity) and Television (#TweetieTV) to name but a few. In seven years Twitter has blossomed to become one of the world’s leading communications platforms, allowing people to engage with people on topical issues at any point in time.
“The idea for the #RaboTweeties came about simply because it has become, in such a short space of time, a far reaching real-time platform for breaking news, entertainment and information sharing. Just as film, TV, radio and print have their award shows, I thought those who use Twitter to inspire and inform should also be recognised,” says Stephen Conmy event organiser and editor of DigitalTimes.ie.

MISTAKEN By Neil Jordan
Though divided, like the city itself, by background and class, they shared the same smell, the same looks, and perhaps, as he comes to realise, the same soul. They exchange identities when it suits them, as their lives take them to England and America, and find that taking on another’s personality can lead to darker places than either had imagined. When Kevin and his double, Gerald Spain, meet up, the exchanging identities for various purposes is at first almost a game, something to make their lives easier, to achieve things they feel they can’t do as themselves. But, what starts out as a bit of fun, a way of making life easier or more interesting, turns very dark once they’re grown up and exchange identities one more time.
Neil Jordan is so famed as a filmmaker that I had no idea he also wrote books.
This is another of my mother’s books that found its way into my library. When choosing my next novel I recognised Jordan’s name and thought the title enigmatic enough to warrant a read. “I had been mistaken for him so many times that when he died it was as if part of myself had died too.” Mistaken begins with the funeral of Gerald Spain, once a successful author, who died suddenly in his mid fifties. Our narrator, Kevin Thunder, was frequently mistaken for Gerald in his younger days, given their strong ressemblance.
Kevin grew up under that shadow of this double – a boy so uncannily like him that they were mistaken for each other at every turn. As children in 1960s Dublin, one lived next to Bram Stoker’s house, haunted by an imagined Dracula, the other in the more refined spaces of Palmerston Park.

I always think it's funny when people blame their strong hair growth on shaving when they were young! When you shave your hair, you are only cutting the top of the hair at skin level, so it will grow back quite quickly compared to waxing. Also, when you shave, you create a blunt edge so the hair will feel sharp and the hair initially appears darker because it hasn't been exposed to UV rays or daily chemicals.
You Will Eventually Outgrow Acne?
So many people associate acne with teenagers and presume that once they leave puberty, it's in the past, which couldn't be further than the truth. Hormone levels fluctuate throughout your life, particularly women, hence menstrual cycle breakouts. The treatment principles are the same no matter what your age. If you develop acne, act upon it quickly so there is no scarring.
Dry Skin? Drink More Water?
We all need a certain level of water daily to keep our bodies hydrated, but if only drinking water would supply our skin with enough moisture!
Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and usually gets the last of the vitamins and minerals we take in. There's no doubt that drinking water will improve our complexion, but it also takes a beating every day from all the wind, rain, heating, air con, incorrect product use etc. So we need to supply our skin with enough moisture from an external method such as effective serums and moisturisers

Many acne sufferers believe the more they wash their face the more they will "dry it out". This removes natural oils which can cause your skin to produce more oil, and you can experience tightness to the skin meaning it lacks moisture. Stick to a skin regime morning and evening which has been recommended by a skin care professional.
Facial Toners Will Close Pores?

PROTEINS
Proteins, just like carbohydrates, have been misunderstood over the years.
While it is true that protein is the most important building material for muscles, cell membranes, connective tissue, hormones, enzymes and the immune system, it has been said that the Irish people consume more than what is needed.
Proteins contain twenty amino acids, nine of which are essential to the diet, meaning that we need to get them through our diet. These amino acids are found in both animal and plant sources, however only animal based products contain the essential amino acids.
For this reason it is important for those of us that are on vegetarian or vegan diets to eat a wide range of plant based foods to ensure all the requirements and needs are met for these essential amino acids.
Though carbohydrates are the body’s main fuel source, protein can be used as an energy source when the carbohydrates stores are low. This is particularly relevant for endurance athletes undertaking intense training schedules, but care must be taken as if protein is used for fuel when carb sources
are low then there won’t be enough protein available The immune system may also be effected as antito the body for repairing and rebuilding the body’s bodies that defend and protect the body against tissues including the muscles. diseases are made from proteins. THE BEST BUGS FOR A HAPPY GARDEN
Bugs can be annoying little devils but not always.
If insects weren't around to pollinate plants, to eat other insects and to get eaten by birds we actually wouldn't be around very long either.
as well. In just the three weeks it takes for the ladybug nymph to pupate, it will eat approximately 400 harmful aphids. In all, a ladybug eats about 5,000 aphids during its entire lifetime. In addition, they eat whitefly pupa, soft scale, spider mites, and thrips – all of which can cause harm to your garden.
Ladybugs are very beneficial to your garden, as they eat other insects that are harmful and yet many gardeners unintentionally kill these beneficial insects while they are young because they do not recognize them while they are in this stage of life. While still a nymph, ladybugs actually resemble tiny black alligators that are about half their adult length. They also contain orange, red, or white markings. This colouration and overall look can make ladybug nymphs look a bit frightening, despite their kind nature and helpful garden habits.
Hover flies
Ladybugs (or Lady Beetles):
During the winter, ladybugs prefer to rest in dry areas that provide them adequate protection, such as house roofing tiles, tree bark, and in the attics of homes. In the early spring, they will come out from hiding. They begin feeding and laying their eggs immediately. In fact, one female ladybug can lay up to 1,000 eggs in a period that is just over three months. When the young hatch, they begin feeding immediately

Also dubbed as flower or syrphid flies, hover flies are often confused with wasps or bees. Similar to the lacewings, the larvae of the hover flies feed on aphids that like to live in tight, hard to reach places. Another thing that you should know about hover flies larvae is that they appear early in spring – long before any other helpful insect – and are known to help obtain larger and more beautiful raspberries and strawberries.

If you don’t have spiders in the flower or vegetable garden, you risk a pest outbreak. While most of us think the worst of them, rest assured that the spiders in your garden will never enter your home and are not poisonous. If you don’t spot any, then you can attract them by planting straw mulches or permanent perennial plants.

The Club will be working with Event Management Company Kevin Rowe Events, who in the last 18 months has many events like this with other GAA clubs and companies nationwide to deliver such projects. The official launch night of the St Anne’s Strictly Dancing Experience will take place on October 4 in the club and will be a night of entertainment and fun for all.

Arrivederci Trapattoni
On 11 September 2013 Giovanni Trapattoni left his post of Irish Soccer manager by “mutual consent” Trap had been in charge for over 5 years and had steered Ireland to a World Cup playoff which they lost in controversial circumstances in Paris, and an ill fated European Championship in Poland in 2012. He managed the team on 64 occasions winning 26, drawing 22 and losing on just 16 occasions. Failure to qualify for Brazil 2014 seems to have brought the curtain down on his reign although it is still mathematically possible but highly unlikely. Martin O’Neill is the front-runner to succeed Trap and we eagerly await the decision.

Rovers played well for the first 20 minutes, a period which saw them claim two goals through Tommy Stewart and Shane Robinson, but then proceeded to take the foot off the gas as Sheriff began to find their feet.
Ronan Finn struck first as he glanced a superb header in the 16th minute off Conor Powell’s cross to send the large travelling Hoops fans into raptures.

INTERVIEW
dard in the league? I don't know, it's a tough one to call. Some of the players are really good technically and you don't get too many teams that just play long ball.
By Padraig Conlon
Currently in his second spell with The Hoops, Brushie has been pushing Barry Murphy all the way in the battle to be Rovers number one. InRovers recently caught up with the likeable Englishman for a chat.
How is the mood among the squad?
The mood's really good in the camp, obviously it's got a lot better after the last few results, it was great to get the wins after the wobble we had. We were away clay pigeon shooting yesterday and it was good fun. I was the only one who couldn't take part which was a pity. I'm only coming back from a shoulder injury so it's probably not best to put a shotgun up against it and start firing!
It's unfortunate the way the league’s gone, we just haven't been able to grind out the results. We still have some big games to come with the League Cup final and the FAI Cup, hopefully we can keep this run going. It would be a great achievement to end up winning three cups this season.
How is the shoulder?
It's fine now, I'm back training and
fully fit. I've never been the luckiest with injuries. This is the second injury I picked up this season, I picked up a groin injury before the start of the season so I didn't get a good pre season and went in second choice. Then when I finally get a chance I get another injury! Unfortunately I seem to get them throughout my career.
Have you been thinking about your plans for next season yet?
No I haven't, I just want to get this season out of the way first before I start thinking about next season. I know it's a cliche but I'm just taking each game as it comes. Obviously I'm looking to stay at Rovers for another year. With the squad the manager has put together I think Rovers will be going to some exciting On a personal level are places next season and I want to be you enjoying this season? part of that. I suppose the Premier is maybe a bit more competitive now than it was back then. There were some teams that were a lot weaker than the teams in the rest of the division, no disrespect to them but you had teams like Dublin City who were probably an example of this. There is quality in the league now though as is proven by the amount of players from here who are moving over to the UK and doing well.
Did the Irish phenomenon of football fans here supporting English clubs rather than their local team surprise you when you came here from England?
Yeah it is a bit of a strange one all right! Obviously there is an attraction to big players, big clubs and in that sense the English Premier League is attractive. But personally I feel that if you're a football fan you should want want to watch live football, which doesn't seem to be the case in Ireland. The teams in our league all play the right way and anyone can beat anyone, it's a lot better than people think, it would be great if more football fans here gave it a chance, they might be surprised.
Does the lack of interest from the general public annoy the players who play in the LOI?
To borrow another cliche but it is a funny old game. As players we love playing football, and we're lucky

enough to get paid for it, so we just get on with it and don't really think about that too much. We obviously would love to play in front of bigger crowds but that's the way it is.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career? My parents have been my main influence from when I was very young. When I was 12 I was playing with Coventry but living in Birmingham so that meant they had to drive me there and back a lot during the week for training and matches. It's about a 30 minute drive. Plus they would have to buy all my equipment like my boots and gloves which they did. I really appreciate everything they did for me.
Who has been the toughest opponent you've ever faced?
Jermaine Defoe in that Europa League match at White Hart Lane. I remember getting a back pass and when I took a touch he was on the 18 yard line, next thing he was right on top of me and blocked my clearance! Absolutely lightning quick he was.
And your most memorable match?
