Welcome to Edition 43 of InTallaght

Following The Dubs’ wonderful victory in the All Ireland Football Final against Mayo we decided to honour their achievement by looking back over what has been an epic season for them. As well as recapturing Sam, The Boys in Blue also won the League and the Leinster Championship. Jim Gavin and his players not only brought a lot of happiness to the county, they are a credit to the GAA, playing the game it in the right way with their exciting brand of attacking football. The secondary interview in this edition is with noted Dublin musician and actor Don Baker. The legendary harmonica player has just released his new album, a wonderful collaboration with some of the leading lights in the Irish music scene. Apart from being a great musician Don is also a very interesting man to chat to who isn't afraid to speak his mind. As usual we have all our regular columns, covering everything from beauty and nutrition to gardening, motors and games. Finally, we would like to give a special thanks to Samantha Philomena Nicholl for her help and great photography during our recent photo shoot at The Square Fashion Show. Apologies for neglecting to mention her in Edition 42.

Mayor Looney with Deputy Mayor Tuffy Outside County Library

Mayor's Fund – Supporting Communities

The Mayor's Fund is a new community initiative introduced by Mayor Dermot Looney and Deputy Mayor Eamon Tuffy. Speaking at the launch in County Hall toward the end of September, Cllr. Looney said “the aim of the Mayor’s Fund is to provide financial assistance to support groups that play a vital role in improving the quality of life for those living and working in South Dublin and where a small amount of funding can make a significant difference”.

Councillors Looney and Tuffy have allocated a combined total of €10,000 from their allowances during their term of office for this new community fund. Cllr Tuffy added that the “themes for the fund were selected by myself and the Mayor and will benefit youth sport, older persons and environmental groups across the whole of South Dublin County”. The Mayor's Fund is separate to the existing Community Grants Scheme run by South Dublin County Council. Applications will be considered by an independent panel selected by the Community Services Department. Grants of €250 and €500 will be made to successful applicants for projects in the South Dublin County area.

Applications close at 12 noon on November 1. Application forms will be available through the Council’s community centre and library network and can be returned by post to the Community Services Department, South Dublin County Council, County Hall, Tallaght, Dublin 24. The application can also be downloaded from the Council’s website www.sdcc.ie and completed forms emailed to comdevof@sdublincoco.ie

Former Miss World Rosanna Davison and Cavan GAA Star Alan O’Mara joined Cycle Against Suicide founder Jim Breen last month for the launch of the 2014 route.

The aim of the Cycle Against Suicide initiative is to spread the message that “It’s OK not to feel OK and it’s more than OK to ask for help.” It is also vitally important to promote and raise awareness of the considerable amount of help and support available within communities to people who are battling with mental health issues. The 2013 Cycle Against Suicide saw 2,500 participants cycle through 109 cities, towns and villages in the Republic of Ireland over two weeks. Along the way, the participants stopped into schools, universities and colleges, with speakers engaging with over 15,000 students throughout the 14 days.

This year’s Cycle Against Suicide takes place from Monday, April 28th to Sunday, May 11th. The 2014 route also includes Northern Ireland on the 7th, 8th, 9th and

Dubs Lift Sam

By Padraig Conlon

what they thought was going to be the most exciting last quarter in recent All Ireland Finals, Dublin had other ideas. Denis Bastick came on and immediately set up Bernard Brogan for his second goal. It was a very well worked score as Michael Darragh MacAuley created an overlap with Bastick before the latter picked out Brogan who palmed the ball into the net for as simple a finish as you could wish to get in an All Ireland Final. This put the Dubs in command with 15 minutes to go.

On a glorious September afternoon the Dublin footballers claimed the county’s 24th All ireland title against Mayo. Jim Gavin and his players showed all season that you can play an all out attacking game and be successful.

Going into the final all the talk was that we were set for a repeat of the Dublin-Kerry semi final classic, an end to end shoot out that would go right to the wire.

opening 15 minutes racing into a four point lead.

Dublin were struggling, running down blind alleys, they were finding it hard to even get out of their own half. And then came a lifeline, a blow right into the heart of Mayo that threatened to take the gloss off their great start. Paul Flynn sent a long ball into the edge of the square and Bernard Brogan rose to beat Ger Cafferkey and goalkeeper Robert Hennelly to the ball and punch it into the unguarded net to draw the Dubs level

Dublin and Mayo had been the best two teams in the country this year by a country mile and this one was proving too close to call in the build up to the game. Over the last two seasons they had met four times, with both winning two matches each. Dublin had won both of their 2013 games, but Mayo had toppled them in last The goal was against the run of play year’s semi final and Dublin had a but didn't seem to affect the Mayo score to settle. men too much as they pulled away again to lead by three points. For all Mayo's dominance in the first half they only led by the bare minimum and for the neutrals, and many of the Mayo contingent, the feeling was that maybe they had blown their chance again.

Dublin were a different team after the interval, racing into a lead three minutes into the half with points from Cian O’Sullivan and Eoghan O’Gara. Cillian O’Connor drew Mayo level with a free, but Dublin's momentum was building. It now looked for all the world that the Dubs were going to tear into Mayo until Andy Moran poached a goal that was as against the run of play as Brogan's had been in the first half and it was all square at 19 each with 20 minutes to go. As everyone in the stadium, and watching on telly, got ready for

Cillian O’Connor kept Mayo within touching distance by converting a few frees but it looked like it was slipping away for the Westerners again.

Dublin had amassed a number of casualties by this stage, the bench had been emptied and Rory O’Carroll and Eoghan O’Gara were both suffering the effects of big hits. After playing a wonderful brand of attacking football all summer the closing minutes were all about Dublin holding on to what they had and the game lurched into a stop start affair.

Mayo did manage to pull it back to within two points of the Boys in Blue and were dramatically presented with an opportunity to win the game in injury time. However, to the amazement of the Mayo bench Cillian O’Connor opted for a point from close range when there was a chance for a goal. Referee Joe McQuillan then blew up from Stephen Cluxton’s kick out and Dublin were crowned All-Ireland football champions for the second time in three years with a final score of 2-12 to 1-14.

In the end Dublin were worthy champions, their performances after winning the Leinster championship were excellent and lit up what was an otherwise drab championship year. It was fitting that this latest All Ireland came in the same year as Dublin lost the great Kevin Heffernan, the last time the city boys had won two titles in three years was during the golden era of Heffo's Army in the 70's. All the signs are there that Dublin have the potential to dominate Gaelic football for the foreseeable future. If they can learn from the mistakes of their last defence in 2012 then they could be very hard to stop next season.

Dublin Manager Jim Gavin speaking after the match

Congratulations on The Dubs wonderful victory, how does it feel?

Fantastic, yeah. I'm just delighted for the players. The sacrifices and the effort they put in throughout the season was phenomenal and they got their just rewards. They showed great heart and great resolve to never give in.

Were you concerned that Dublin were losing at half time and had been second best for most of the first half?

I am always saying to the players that half-time is only a break in the play. That’s what it is. The most important thing for us is that we are up by a point or more at the end of the game when the referee blows his whistle. That has been the philosophy and the players accept that. Halftime is a chance to rest and re-

group and have a tactical discussion. There was no big drama in the Dublin dressing-room at half-time at all. The game ebbs and flows and it is important for the guys to keep their composure and focus and keep going with the gameplan. Within that they always have the freedom to express themselves.

way less important. The last one was the first All Ireland Dublin had won in 16 years so obviously meant it was very emotional but this time round it's a great feeling as well because we feel we've righted the wrongs of 2012.

Do you think this season proves Dublin can now go on and dominate?

No, there are no guarantees in sport. We've won this year but the minute the referee blows the final whistle, that's when the 2013 season ends. I know from speaking to other managers, they're already setting themselves up for the 2014 championship. We're probably behind now already.

Now that the dust has settled on Dublins victory inTallaght Magazine caught up with “kingdom killer” kevin McManaman for a chat.

Two weeks on from winning your second All Ireland medal how's things with you?

It's calmed down a bit now. The first week after winning was very special and we enjoyed it but now it's straight back into the club championship. I have a quarter final coming up with my club St Judes so that's what I'm focusing on now.”

How does this win compare to 2011?

Are you already thinking about next year and another go at retaining Sam?

No I haven't thought about next year yet, probably won't until training kicks in again in a few months. There are probably six teams that can win the All Ireland next year, the margins are very small between all of them.

There was more good news for Dublin GAA with the recent announcement of the the signing of Dublin’s new five-year county sponsorship deal with insurance company AiG, worth close to €5 million.

This will not only ensure all the necessary preparation and support of the reigning All-Ireland football champions and their county’s hurlers through to 2018, but also the Dublin women’s footballers and camogie players, who for the first time are included under the one sponsorship umbrella with the deal to commence on the November 1.

INTERVIEW

Another song Politician deals with some of the people who’ve let the country down recently. Are you politically active yourself?

By Padraig Conlon

Don Baker has just marked 40 years as a musician by creating a wonderful album called My Songs, My Friends along with some of ireland’s greatest musicians.

As well as his music, Don is also known for being an accomplished actor. InTallaght Magazine was lucky enough to get to chat to the charismatic Dubliner about his new work and his remarkable career.

Congratulations on your new album My Songs My Friends, it’s a fine record, you must be very proud?

Thanks very much, yeah I’m delighted with it; it was a great experience making it though it was tough trying to work around the availability of people. We ended up recording 22 songs, 14 of them are on this album and the other eight will be on the next one.

When you set about writing the album did you plan on doing all the collaborations?

No I didn’t. The idea for the collaborations came about by accident really. I was in a music shop in Maynooth a few years ago looking at guitars and Clara Rose came up to me to introduce herself and she gave me a copy of her new album. A couple of weeks later I had a lis-

ten to it and I thought it was brilliant. I played it for my producer Stuart Gray and he said “she sings better than you!” so we decided to get her in to sing on the album. Then we decided to get Damo (Dempsey) to sing one. It’s not on the album because I’m keeping it for a single. After that the phone started hopping with people looking to come on board. After that I started thinking about writing tracks with specific people in mind. Altogether it took two years to make.

Would it be fair to say it’s quite a personal album, is one of the tracks about the death of your fiancés brother?

Yes it is, the song Clara sings Fergus The Healing Song is about that. On St Stephens Day three years ago we were in the house, the tree was up, the lights were on and I was look-

ing out the window at the rain. Next thing I could hear my fiancé screaming. She had jut received a call that her brother Fergus had been swept out to sea. He was on holiday with his family, he was on a lilo in about two feet of water when a wave took him out to sea. I had had visuals just before hearing that of him lying on a lilo. The song is for the family, just trying to say that healing will take place.

I’m a card carrying member of Sinn Féin. I’ve have no massive interest in politics but I do support Sinn Féin and provide moral support to them by playing before meetings and that. I’m not academic but I know good when I see it and I do believe Sinn Féin have the best interests of working class people at heart. I think Gerry Adams would be a very good Taoiseach. We need change in this country and I think Sinn Féin are going to go from strength to strength.

How did you first get into Blues Music?

When I was very young living in the inner city in Dublin. I met a man called Richard Uzzell who now lives in Belfast, he introduced me to it. I had been playing the harmonica since I was 6 or 7 but Richard introduced me to Sonny Terry, Robert Johnson, Brownie McGhee people like that.

When did you start playing the guitar?

When I was in school there was a kid who had a guitar and I rememWhat’s your own ber trying to swap him my roller favourite track on skates, marbles, everything I had the album? really, for that guitar and he said it It’s the instrumental one Dallas Rag wasn’t enough. that I do with Pat Collins because I’ve been trying to learn that riff for After that I ended up being locked the past 25 years! it and started practicing. It made no sound but I was still able to learn on it. When I got out I got a job on the sites and two weeks later I got my first guitar, an Echo.

God no, I’m not! Those people that win it are only able to do one song. Could they do two or three hours? I don’t think so. Louis Walsh should get four or five guys who are over 50 make a group and call it Manzone!

You left Ireland when you were young to travel the You have been labelled world playing music, this the best harmonica must have been exciting? player in the world, how Yes it was. I lived all over. The first do you feel about that? place I went was a place called Buw in Germany. I was just playing music. I loved it there because unlike Ireland your success in Germany isn’t ruled by how much money you have. Actually it’s like that in a lot of counties really, Holland, France. They can see past the bullsh*t. I suppose they weren’t as influenced by the church and so are able to think for themselves. I remember being in Heidelberg in the early 80’s and the students all took to the streets because the fare on the trams went up half a cent! The police were out with water cannons and everything. I remember feeling that it showed people have got power.

What do you think of the current Irish music scene?

I’m a bit disappointed with the young people here because they’re all knocking f*ck out of the guitar! Running up and down the neck and just trying to make as much noise as possible! My own son Don Elliot is 21 and he’s gigging five or six nights a week which is great. He’s doing covers. I tried to influence him in guitar, teach him about delayed gratification.

I’d imagine you’re not a big fan of X Factor?

I’m not the best in the world; I don’t know where that came from! I’m unique but I’m not the best.

What current musicians do you admire?

Nigel Kennedy, I love his attitude. I remember listening to an interview and he was asked what he was listening to and he said Girls Aloud. The interviewer thought he was taking the p*ss but he said that there was something in them that he really liked and he didn’t care what anyone thought. Then he started playing Danny Boy!

Finally Don are you still involved in acting?

Yes I am, last week I won a Best Supporting Actor award in the Melbourne Film Festival for a film called Last Men. I play a lunatic in it. I rang up Finbar Furey when I got the part and said “I’m after getting a role as a madman.” And he says “That should be easy for you!” I’m also doing a play called Death Row Cowboy in Smock Alley in January. Fair City wanted to write a regular part for me but I wouldn’t have been able to do it with my touring schedule.

My Songs, My Friends will be released on October 18. Turn to page 40 to read our review.

Freshers Week Kicked Off

Shortly after his performance Lords of Strut (Just back from a successful tour of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival) took to the stage and wowed the audience with their acrobatics and also had them in stitches with their comedic performance before shocking us all by stripping down to their leather pants for their final act.

We kicked off “Freshers Week” in style this year with comedy magician Jack Wise and the hilarious comedy gymnast act Lords of Strut performing in the canteen on the Monday to a packed out audience. Jack Wise took to the stage at 1pm and began entertaining the crowd with tricks and illusions, stunning the audience with his amazing sword swallowing routine (He is the only sword Both acts were enormous fun and very swallower in Ireland). So it was fantastic well received amongst the student body. to have him with us.

24th September

The Tuesday of Freshers week saw UK number 1 chart toppers Sam and the Womp coming over to Ireland for the IT Tallaght Freshers Ball held in the Button Factory. The band were supported by IT Tallaght’s very own DJ Society including Lui Rwego, Conor Dunne and Adam Kelly. Sam and Aaron from the band put in an explosive and upbeat performance that went down a treat and even performed their number 1 single Bom Bom along with their brand new single Ravo.

Cinema HOW I LIVE NOW

CAPTAIN PHILIPS

Following the success of the cinematic transformation of teen novel series, The Hunger Games, it’s easy to understand why Meg Rosoff’s novel was picked up in the first place.

A riveting true story starring Tom Hanks set on the high seas.

By Rachel Lynch

Pseudo-apocalyptic themes have certainly been trending over the last couple of years and this one adds to that list. Directed by Kevin MacDonald, Saoirse Ronan stars as sullen American Daisy. Packed off to visit her bohemian British relatives, she has insulted her 14year-old cousin (Tom Holland) before they leave the airport. However, the warmth of Isaac and his sister Piper (Harley Bird) thaws her ’tude – although the real heat is generated by her cousin Edmond (George MacKay), who has a tame hawk and can make cows obey his whispered commands. Daisy enjoys a Blytonesque idyll, until the mother of the family (Anna Chancellor) leaves for Geneva and never returns because a war with an unspecified enemy has begun for unspecified reasons. sorbed teen might be galvanised to learn more about current affairs, but How I Live Now sticks to a frustratingly vague, allusive course. There’s some consequence-free softcore lovemaking, before the army arrive and put the boys in a cadet camp while the girls do some desultory potato sorting on a farm, while Daisy plots to escape. It’s all a bit nebulous, except for its dubious notion that anxiety disorders can be cured by exposure to a good, hard, death-stuffed war.

Tom Hanks spends most of Captain Phillips with a gun in his face. In a recreation of the 2009 Somali pirate siege of Captain Richard Phillips' ship, the MV Maersk Alabama, Bourne Ultimatum and United 93 director Paul Greengrass keeps one pointed at our foreheads too. At least it feels like it, with Greengrass adapting action filmmaking tactics to drop us in the middle of this high-tension situation. Stay all the way through Captain Phillips' credits; your heart will need the cool down period.

The danger is real in Captain Phillips — and not simply because what we see really happened. Run-of-the-mill action movies have killers descending on unknowing prey, slow burn searches through dimly-lit corridors, and standoffs set to the booming beats of a ticking clock. The difference is Captain Phillips immerses every character, “good” and “bad,” into a pressure cooker and hands them AK47s. Greengrass and screenwriter Billy Ray clash the American crewmen and the impoverished Somalis without ever reducing them to stereotypes. The movie is a deconstructed thriller that allows people to act like people, with Hanks and newcomer Barkhad Abdi, as the Somali captain, delivering two riveting performances.

DAVID HALPIN Love Is Never Gone By Colm O’Muirí

MY SONGS, MY FRIENDS Don Baker By Padraig Conlon

With a career spanning four decades Don Baker has built a solid reputation as a singer, guitarist, harmonica player and songwriter.

As well as all this he’s also turned his hand to acting appearing in The Name of Father, Love/Hate and Fair City.

He has recorded several critically acclaimed albums and on his latest offering My Songs, My Friends he has outdone himself, creating a wonderful record that I think is going to be very well received. The album features guest appearances by an impressive array of Irish performers singing Baker’s own songs.

The star-studded line-up includes Liam Ó Maonlaí, Brian Kennedy, Gemma Hayes, Finbar Furey, Sinead O’Connor, Eleanor McEvoy, John Spillane, Mick Pyro, Clara Rose, Rob Strong, Pat Collins, Martin Furey, Paddy Casey and Declan O’Rourke. The album opens with Cinderalla and Baker’s unmistakeable harmonica accompanied by Sinead O’Connor at her very best singing about “not wanting chains on me no more.” After this is the quieter, slower Little Rock n’ Roll Band with Finbar Furey on vocals.

The song reminded me a bit of what a Christy Moore/Leonard Cohen collaboration might sound like backed up with a lovely harmony that gives it an upbeat quality. The next stand out track for me is Blues Junkey, a full on love letter to the blues with Republic Of Loose’s’ Mick Pyro belting out an outstanding vocal performance referencing Rory Gallagher, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

Clara Rose sings the special Gospel/Blues style anthem, Fergus – The Healing Song with dark undertones of loss and the hope that “I’ll see you again, don’t know where don’t know when, I know the healing’s gonna come.” Politician, featuring John Spillane, castigates our politicians while Crack Cocaine with Paddy Casey on vocals deals with the ravages of drug addiction and how it “takes everything.”

While Baker is rightly acknowledged as one of the top blues harmonica players in the world, I was also very impressed with his guitar playing and song writing ability on this album. My Songs, My Friends is a thoroughly enjoyable album which I’d highly recommend. Check out our interview with the man himself on page 20 of this edition.

Love Is Never Gone is the debut single from folk and country artist David Halpin released through Brytestar Records.

This is a great track and completely different to the music you will find in the mainstream today which really sets it apart. The song is a beautiful country/folk ballad from the Tallaght artist who takes inspiration from both characters and places both real and imagined.

The accompanying piano, played by Brian Sheil who also produced and performed the backing vocals on the single, keeps the track at a pace which suits David’s voice.

Love is Never Gone is a very emotional song and although it doesn’t sound like Springsteen, the song writing is from the same mould, focusing on events which the listener can relate to which will endear him to his fans and listeners. In all, Love is Never Gone is a great debut single from David Halpin who we are sure to be hearing from again very soon.

The song is now available on iTunes or you can listen to it on YouTube on either Bryestar Records or David Halpin’s official page which also features the accompanying video.

TESCO HUDL

By Cathal Jennings

The Hudl is the new tablet on the block.

It won’t be challenging the iPad anytime soon but it’s nice to see an alternative to the mega brands making it easier for people to have the latest technology.

The seven-inch Hudl tablet comes in four colours – black, blue, purple, red – and runs Google's familiar Android software on a high-definition screen. So how does it compare against the giants from America – the recently refreshed Google Nexus 7, Amazon's Kindle Fire, and Apple's iPad mini?

The screen is sharp and clear: websites and book text are easily legible, videos crisp and colourful. Stereo speakers on the back provide loud, clear audio, and Tesco promises to have 600,000 books via its Blinkbox ebook service. As with other seven-inch tablets, the Hudl is light enough to wield easily with one hand. The soft-touchback and thumb-wide screen bezel mean you don't have to worry about it slipping out of your grasp, or your fingers accidentally activating the touchscreen.

You could ignore Tesco's apps and services in favour of those available through the Google Play store. But if you are a Tesco shopper (isn't everyone at some point?) the retail giant's integrated applications and services on the Hudl provide quick access to your online grocery orders, Tesco Direct shopping, and The only clue it's a Tesco tablet even Tesco Clubcard and Tesco rather than some generic product bank account. is the logo stamped on its softtouch plastic back, and a small 'T' The bundling of the free Clubcard in the corner. That's no bad thing. There are familyfresh, clean and responsive, even friendly user settings, and for those when running graphically intensive unfamiliar with tablets — which is games, and can run any of the likely to be almost every buyer — 850,000 standard Android apps. Tesco has built a setup guide, which

walks you through common settings and the configuration of the parental controls. But it's the price that really sets the Hudl apart. Even at the full price of €142, it's €90 cheaper than Google's Nexus 7.2 and nearly €200 cheaper than Apple's iPad mini. Though Amazon's Kindle Fire is £99 (€117), the Hudl has a superior processor and interface. I doubt the executives at Apple are going to be too worried about the Tesco Hudl but it is not meant to challenge in the market against the established brands. The Tesco Hudl is a nice affordable Tablet and coming up to Christmas it would be a very good alternative to the expensive iPad that Santa Claus may not be able to manage. There are a few cheap tablets out there but the Tesco Hudl is the best for what it offers. It is nice to see that if people want a tablet for just games and watching some movies there is now an alternative to spending hundreds of euro. ARKHAM ORIGINS By Cathal Jennings

Arkham Origins will feature similar gameplay to its predecessors.

The remote claw is a new gadget which allows Batman to target two objects and pull them together allowing him to knock enemies together or hit them with objects. Tethering two walled-points together creates a tightrope that Batman can traverse. The shock gloves allow Batman to block electric attacks, instantly disable some enemies and stun shielded ones, and short circuit some objects within the environment.

Some gadgets present in the Batman: Arkham series return in Arkham Origins, including: the cryptographic sequencer, which is used for hacking security consoles; the batarang, a throwing weapon; the batclaw, used for hooking on to a surface; smoke pellets, used for stealthy exits and entries; explosive gel and the grapnel accelerator, an earlier version of the "grapnel boost". The game introduces a fast travel system, allowing Batman to remotely summon his plane, the batwing, to transport him to

other areas of the game world quicker than gliding or grappling can allow. Enemy tower installations prevent Batman summoning the craft in some areas and must first be disabled using various gadgets and abilities to make the Batwing available; the Batwing is not player controlled. Some towers can only be disabled when the player has obtained the necessary equipment.

NBA2K14 By Cathal Jennings

First and foremost, 2K14 continues to get the core basketball systems almost dead-on right, and that’s the key to its success.

Unlike hoops sims from early in this console generation, it simply has no major weaknesses. Fast breaks are fun to execute but not too common or exploitable – you can thank the tightened-up defense for that, which also stops you from charging wildly to the basket for a hoop and/or a foul every time down the floor. Playcalling is a snap via the D-pad, and the Y/Triangle-button-based post-up game again feels intuitive and allows you to pull off a bevy of moves in the paint. Yet again this year, presentation matches gameplay. In addition to uncanny signature animations – Kobe’s shot looks exactly like it does in real life, as one of countless examples – the little ones are what fool casual passers-by into thinking you’re watching an actual NBA game. Guys complaining about getting fouled after making shots with contact, “Beat L-A!” crowd chants when leading late against the Lakers at home, sarcastic “Air-baaaaall” serenades by the fans when a visiting player launches up a shot that doesn’t draw iron, and many more all add flavor, personality, and texture to an already-realistic hoops sim.

The commentary is equally impressive, with the three-man Kevin Harlan-led booth not only keeping up with the on-court action, but offering specially recorded dialogue for Path to Greatness. For instance, when one scenario pitted LeBron against Kobe in the Laker legend’s final game – coincidentally when James was trying to break Bryant’s record for youngest to reach 25,000 career points – they weren’t matched up against each other on defense. But when I took control of James and chose to D up Kobe for the first time, Harlan chimed in with, “Here we go; this is the matchup we’ve all been waiting for!” He wasn’t wrong.

It’s a credit to NBA 2K14 that despite not one but two new basketball sims looming on the next-gen horizon, it still managed to draw my attention squarely to the current-gen court and keep it there. Though LeBron’s new mode doesn’t manage to bottle the same magic of MJ’s from two years back, the new assist pass, and re-tooled ball handling have made what was already a finely tuned on-court experience even tighter.

Groundbreaking Irish recruitment website launches with €450k funding

A new platform designed to make companies hire people for a fraction of the cost has been unveiled. Jobbio has launched with the opening of new Dublin and London offices. Over 130 Irish and international employers such as Kerry Group and IDL are already on board.

Jobbio is a website and mobile app that privately connects people looking for great jobs, with companies looking to hire great staff. The company raised €450,000 in funding from UK technology investors MXC Capital. Developed by Irish brothers Stephen and John Quinn, the Jobbio comes with promise of changing the global recruitment market forever. “Recruitment is broken, and is long overdue radical change,” said Stephen Quinn.

“The inefficiency of mountains of paper CVs and thousands of unopened emails with CV attachments can’t be the future, but live bios just could be. We’re really excited to launch Jobbio today, a platform to fix a long broken model and totally transform the industry.

“Our mission, audacious as it may seem, is to organise the opportunities of the world and deliver them to a more relevant audience and that is what we’re focusing on doing from day one.” For more see www.onjobbio.com

Apple pips Coca-Cola to world top brand

Apple has surpassed Coca-Cola and Google to become the world's most valuable brand among 100 competitors.

That's according to the "Best Global Brands" report for 2013 released by Interbrand, a New York-based corporate identity and brand-consulting company.

Apple claimed the top position this year, Google secured the second-place spot, and Coca-Cola, the brand that had held the No. 1 position for 13 consecutive years, fell to third place.

"Every so often, a company changes our lives - not just with its products but with its ethos. This is why, following Coca-Cola's 13-year run at the top of Best Global Brands, Apple now ranks No. 1," Jez Frampton, global chief executive at Interbrand, said in a statement. "Tim Cook has assembled a solid leadership team and has kept Steve Jobs' vision intact - a vision that has allowed Apple to deliver on its promise of innovation time and time again."

SOLACE By Belinda McKeon

A provincial take on universal themes

As with most of the books I read, this one came to me via my mother. While I felt at times that it was a terribly depressing book, it was depressing in a way that was inevitable. The characters weren’t depressed purely because they were unsatisfied with their lives, but because of a very understandable tragedy. The book starts on a farm, where the prodigal son has returned and is helping his father out on the land. It soon becomes clear that the son has only come ‘home’ because of the death of the mother of his own child. Starting out with such tragedy, this book was never going to be a barrell of laughs. Despite this, I actually really enjoyed it.

I know I always harp on about enjoying reconising places in the fiction that I read, this novel had a double whammy for me in that respect. The main character, the son in the story, grew up on a farm in the midlands, as did I. Mark

grew up in Longford, while I grew up on a farm in Westmeath. But reading Solace makes me very glad that my parents’ expectations were not the same as Mark’s. His father is a farmer and it seems impossible to the father that his son would not follow in his footsteps.

But Mark is an academic, studying for his PhD in English Literature in Trinity College, up in ‘the big smoke’. Mark’s father seems unwilling to believe that his only son wouldn’t want to take over the farm, but wants to live up in Dublin and live a life apart from his parents and the land he grew up on. It is great to use on eyebrows to keep them under control and also a fantastic cuticle cream. It contains vitamin E which acts as an anti-oxidant, and salicylic acid to exfoliate and encourage smoother skin.

However, I wouldn't be using this as a daily face moisturiser. It is an emollient containing lanolin and mineral oil, so very thick and has an unusual but distinctive smell! Available from Boots for €32.

Installing OCTOBER Decking ODDMENTS

DAVID FRAZER

AUTUMN

IS SETTLING IN Bulbs

Early October is a good time to plant spring flowering bulbs so they will establish roots before the first hard frost. When buying bulbs, look at the size of bulbs, the bigger-size bulbs will produce bigger flowers.

Look for firm bulbs with even colour and no signs of disease. Plant tulips and daffodils in groups of at least ten or more. Plant small bulbs in groups of twenty or more. Bulbs of one variety and colour planted en masse will give a great visual effect. Plant snowdrops, chionodoxas, crocuses, scillas and other small bulbs as early as possible.

How deep should you plant bulbs? The basic rule of thumb is the hole should be at least 3 times as deep as the width of the bulb, however, rather than carefully measuring the diameter of each bulb, there are easier ways to figure out how deep to plant bulbs:

If the bulb is big (eg. tulip, daffodil, hyacinth), dig the hole about 6 - 8" (15 - 20 cm) deep; if the bulb is small (crocus, snowdrop, scilla, dwarf Iris, muscari, bluebell), dig the hole about 4 - 5" (10 - 12 cm) deep.

BAD FATS V GOOD FATS

There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to the fats we consume in our diet today with people being lead to believe that following a low fat diet is the key to weight loss success.

People tend to go for low fat products like low fat crisps, ice cream and cakes feeling that this is the best way to reduce their weight. However obesity and its related illness are still a growing concern right across the country!

But trans fats are also found in fried foods like chicken nuggets and breaded fish as well as snack foods like microwave popcorn, crackers and chips.

SimplisticEatingAnd NutritionalAdvice

The general guideline for choosing healthy fats is to replace all saturated in your diet with healthy fats instead. This can be done by cutting back on the amount or red meat you consume, choosing poultry and fish instead. Try eating more beans and nuts too and choose low fat dairy products where possible. This may mean redesigning your shopping list but in time you will definitely see the benefits.

The fats in these kinds of foods are known to increase not only your cholesterol and clog your arteries but they are also responsible for weight gain. Dublin Senior Football Championship Back With A Bang

There were mixed fortunes for the local clubs when the Dublin Senior Football Championship resumed after the summer break last week. St Judes were first up and they clinically dispatched a strong UCD team in the Iveagh Grounds on a score line of 3-12 to 1-05. It was a great team effort by the Judes team with no fewer than nine players getting on the score sheet! It was the turn of Thomas Davis on Friday night who were up against the fancied St Brigits in Newcastle, it was a closer game than the scoreline suggests and the goals Brigits scored and some of the chances the Kiltipper Road men missed were the deciding factor. The final score was St Brigids 5-16 Thomas Davis 0-17

St Judes Clubman has been receiving plaudits since the season finished and this has been backed up by an All Star nomination for the Half Forward.

Danny was named in the Sunday Game Team of the year and Martin Breheny also named him in his team of the year in the Irish Independent so all the signs indicate a first ever All Star for Danny and St Judes. Danny has been joined on the nomination list by 8 of his Dublin teammates, Goalkeeper Gary Maguire, Backs Peter Kelly, Liam Ruche and Micheal Carton, midfielder Joey Boland and fellow forwards Conal Keeney, Paul Ryan and St Marks Clubman David "Dotsy" O'Callaghan.

The tie of the round took place on Saturday afternoon when Ballyboden St Enda’s met Kilmacud Crokes in a sunbathed O’Toole Park, early comers where entertained by St Judes beating St Vincents in the Intermediate Championship.

In the first 20 minutes it was Crokes who dominated and led by 0-07 to 0-01 with 4 points coming from the boot of Mark Vaughan. Boden clawed their way back into the game before the break and trailed by three as the second half started!

The pivotal moment of the game came when Crokes had what seemed a perfectly valid goal disallowed and then moments late were reduced to 14 men when Mark Coughlan saw red, ‘Boden pressed home the numerical advantage and ran out 2-9 to 0-12 winners. Judes were rewarded with a ¼ date with Parnells while ‘Boden were drawn against St Brigids!

Martina Genockey INTERVIEW

58

By Padraig Conlon

Martina Genockey fulfils a number of vital roles with Rovers; as well as editing the match day programme and being the clubs media officer she has also been a member of the board since being elected in 2008. InRovers caught up with her for a chat.

Which of the roles do you enjoy the most?

Being elected onto the board by the members is a very humbling thing and something I’m quite proud of. I was only 24 when it happened, to be on the board of a great club like Shamrock Rovers is amazing. There have always been strong female figures associated with the club down the years; it’s nice to follow in their footsteps. I’m the first female board member. We have a lot of female fans and it’s nice to represent them as well.

brother Francis. My mam’s family would have been Rovers fans as well so I had no hope! When my mam was expecting me in 1984 she went to the cup final! Unfortunately we lost. I went to my first Rovers game when I was three weeks old. When you have family connections to a football club it becomes a part of your life. My cousin had a baby recently and his first game was the EA Sports Cup Final so there’s the next generation!

Your family must be very proud of your position How did your association within the club? with the club initially Ah yeah they are, especially my come about? dad, he’s a volunteer at the club on

I’ve been a Rovers fan all my life; I have the connection from both sides of the family. My dad was a supporter from when he was young; he used to go with his

I think it’s the fans, I think they are the most special thing about the club. I think that’s something the players appreciate when they come to Rovers as well, they’re aware of the fans. Having interviewed all the players from the last ten years they always mention the fans when they’re talking about their decision to come to Rovers.

During Rovers dark days you must have really feared for the club?

I did but I think those days cemented my relationship with this football club. I was always a fan and I didn’t miss a game. When the 400 club was set up I was 19, I was in match days as well as being a college, it could have been a time member, like all of my family. when I fell away from supporting the club. But I didn’t, I felt like the What is it that makes club needed me. I was a student, Rovers such a special club? hadn’t a penny to my name, but

there was no way I wasn’t going to join. I wasn’t going to let me not being able to get €40 a month be the cause of the club not surviving. I love football, I think being a fan of a club that you own, that you’re involved in, is just such a special feeling.

Do you think the FAI are the right organisation to run our national league or do you think it should go back to being run by the clubs?

I honestly think we are better off with the FAI running the league. I would love to see more cooperation between the clubs, there is between a few but overall I don’t think there’s an appetite for it.

I think it’s just down to competition and the battle for resources. I think clubs are doing well just keeping going at the moment. I think it’s difficult when you’re working in a really hard environment for everybody to cooperate. What’s best for every club isn’t necessarily what’s best for the league. If you had many conflicting interests I think that’d be very difficult to operate the league.

What has been your greatest memory so far with Rovers?

It has to be the Europa League. I had seen Rovers win the league in 1994 and 2010 which was amazing, it was massive, but even that didn’t compare with the sheer magnitude of qualifying for the group stages of the Europa League. That was one of the greatest experiences of my life, being involved in those games. The battle to stage those games in Tallaght, there was a lot of focus at the time on the seats and that but there were loads of other issues behind the scenes.

For example the press box in Tallaght holds 30 seats but the requirements from UEFA were you had to be able to accommodate 100 journalists, so we had to sort that and get temporary electricity in there. We had to organise press kits, DVDs, it was a lot of work but it was a great experience.

When I was growing up it was Alan O’Neill the ex goalkeeper, he’s one of my absolute favorites. In more recent times, in the Tallaght era it has to be Gary Twigg. Anybody that scores 80 goals for Rovers is going to be loved by the fans!

Rovers fans, I’d love for people just to go to a game and give it a chance.

Favorite away ground?

This year it’s been fantastic going to Thomond Park, they treated us so well. The way they treated our fans was amazing. I’d love to see a Yourmost memorable match? club from Galway back in the Your thoughts on this There’ve been so many brilliant Premier as well; they always have season so far? nights in Tallaght. So I suppose the of a Celtic League made

up of clubs from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Would this be something you would welcome?

I think that would be fantastic, even if it was something outside of your own league, like another European type competition, that’d be great. There is definitely a movement towards that type of thing, UEFA are also looking a bit more favourably on it.

Finally Martina I heard that you haven’t got enough jobs and you are going to be going for another one next year? a good team and a good way of doing things. He is massively involved in every aspect of the club, from the schoolboys to the under 19s team. I’ve a great working relationship with Trevor, I think he’s brilliant. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody who works as hard in football as Trevor and that’s the reason it’s going well now in http://issuu.com/intallaght/docs/intallaght_edition_41recent league games.

first match in Tallaght would be my most memorable. I was doing the tickets and because there was only one stand the demand was huge. Everyone was coming in with a story about why they should get a ticket! The emotion that night was just unbelievable, the feeling like we’re back now!

If there’s anything you could change about the L.O.I what would it be?

To make more football fans here see the league the way we do. League of Ireland fans are brilliant, not just

I was approached to see if I would be interested in running in the council elections in Tallaght South next year. It was something I’d been thinking about for a little while. The selection convention was at the start of the week. I’m not a big political person but I am a community person. I’m from Jobstown, I live in Jobstown, I have experienced what people from the area have experienced. It’s genuinely for me that I’d love the chance to represent the community. I’ve always had a big interest in equality; the type of things people are living with at the moment is awful. It’s all just early days yet. I’ve been officially selected so I’m going to be running for the Labour Party in the election next May.

What are your overall thoughts on this year’s Under 19 Elite Division?

The league is going to be very competitive this year. There are seven home based players in the league that are international players which shows that the standard is improving all the time.

A lot of players in the league are also going into first teams. The majority of teams get it down and play, there’s only a few who try and bully you but we'll always play it out from the back, try to play the game the right way. The way we play is modelled on the first team's style.
