Welcome

Welcome to Edition 44 of InTallaght

Eamon Dunphy has lived a life most of us could only dream about as an international footballer, journalist and TV personality. He finally decided to put the story of this most remarkable of lives down in print in his recently released autobiography. We were only too delighted to chat to one of Ireland's most well know figures about football, the future of our country and of course the book! The secondary interview in this edition is with former snooker world champion Ken Doherty. Since his famous victory in 1997 Ken has been an outstanding competitor in the game, representing this country, and his sport, with dignity and pride. We really enjoyed sitting down with him and hearing all about his career, his new TV show and his plans for the future. We're happy to report that the recent Red Line Book Festival was very successful and the organisers were delighted with the festival’s second outing. Hopefully it can continue to go from strength to strength and we would like to congratulate all involved in this year’s Red Line and wish them many more years of success. Along with this we have all the usual reviews, columns and features you've come to expect from InTallaght Magazine. As always, please feel free to get in touch with us as we do genuinely love to hear from you our readers.

Two young men from Tallaght are currently making waves in the residential sales business with Dundrum-based Field sales agency, Field Management Ireland (FMI).

I had wanted to become a professional footballer, and was playing with Preston North End in England, but I broke my leg quite badly when I was 16, so I got into coaching instead. That was great for a while but it got very difficult when our funding was reduced, and soon after that I started working for FMI.

Kevin Doyle from Aylesbury, and Lar Flynn from Killinarden, have enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks of the company, and are encouraging others with ambition and a strong work ethic to do the same. Movember

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches around the world. With their “Mo’s” men raise vital funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer and mental health. As an independent global charity, Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.

Movember challenges men to grow a moustache for the 30-days of November, thereby changing their appearance and the face of men’s health. In October Mo Bros sign up at Movember.com, and on the 1st of Movember, with a clean-shaven face start their Mo growing journey.

Then for the entire month, these selfless and generous men known as Mo Bros, effectively become walking, talking billboards for 30 days. Through their growing efforts they raise awareness for the often ignored issues of men’s health, by prompting conversations wherever they go. Another crucial part of being a Mo Bro is to raise funds for men’s health. Men donate their face and, much like taking part in a run or a walk for charity, ask their family and friends to sponsor their efforts. Movember’s not just for men, Mo Sistas play a vital role in the success of Movember by supporting and encouraging the men in their life to get involved. Mo Sistas also get involved by signing up at Movember.com, and participate by raising funds and awareness themselves. We’ll be keeping an eye out for any impressive “Mo’s” around Tallaght this month and wish everyone involved the very best of luck for such a great cause.

Tallaght based national charity seeking volunteers Teenline is currently looking for new volunteers to help man their help-line. Potential help-line volunteers will recieve full training and will have to commit to a few hours a week. The Help-Line office is in the Tallaght area and from there they take calls from teenagers countrywide.

If you would like to volunteer with Teen-Line Ireland, but feel the helpline is not for you, there are other ways you can help out e.g. organising fundraising events, assisting with awareness campaigns, sharing your ideas etc. If you are interested in volunteering please visit

INTERVIEW

because the people you rooted for always ended up losing?

By Padraig Conlon

Yes that's right, I did feel that all the good guys never used to win when I was young. An early example being Noel Browne, who I admired, and how he was defeated over the Mother and Child Scheme.

Eamon Dunphy has carved out a wonderful career in the Irish media spanning almost 40 years up to the present day.

Prior to this he had a modest career as a footballer with Manchester United, York City, Millwall, Charlton Athletic, Reading and Shamrock Rovers. We caught up with him to discuss his new book The Rocky Road, which is the first volume of his autobiography, and his sporting and journalistic life so far.

Was it difficult having to write a book where you were the subject?

Yes it was, it can kind of become a bit of a chore when you're writing about yourself. It was difficult, you have to revisit things you don't like, like bad memories.

At the end of it I was saying to my wife that I was sick of writing about myself. But I think it's an interesting story, there's a lot of mistakes in there, a lot of failure, it was worth writing though. It's had a very very good response from everybody so far which I'm happy about.

Your start in life wasn't the easiest and at the beginning of the book you say that living in Drumcondra and being

“the poorest kid in the locality” took a toll on your self esteem.

house and both your parents were decent hardworking people?

We were different from our neighbours for a number of reasons. Our home, our clothes, the fact that my father was a labourer, and was unemployed.

Like most parents they weren't concerned with themselves they just wanted the best for their children. As very young children we were shielded from the problems our parents faced.

Yes I think it did, I grew up in poverty in what was a middle class neighbourhood. It wasn't like we were all in it together, as you are in a poor community.

Most of the people in Drumcondra at that time were teachers and civil servants. I think my experience of growing up there is what made me an outsider.

In spite of your situation you describe how there was a lot of love in your

Yes they were, respectable people as my mother would say. In my brother and I's formative years they always did everything for us.

They were a contrast to the generations who came later, like my generation who were more interested in themselves.

You say you felt quite pessimistic during your formative years

But then came the 60's and the good guys started to win. People like Muhammad Ali, Norman Mailer, John F Kennedy and in Ireland Seán Lemass and TK Whittaker made us more optimistic. But that era has now passed I believe and we are now experiencing a darkness like we've never known.

There are no good guys now, it's all guys in suits controlling everything, more wealth has been created and squandered The sense of optimism we had in the 60's is long gone. Maybe we were naive back then. The world has never been so pessimistic. People are in such fear and dread. A lot of the problems my family dealt with when I was growing up like long term unemployment and the threat of eviction are once again prevalent in our society today. As well as that people have these massive debt mountains. There's no prospect for the young, no decent health service or education for them, I don't think things could be bleaker.

What do you think the young Eamon Dunphy would think of the older present day Eamon?

He'd probably tell him to get the hell out of here! I don't know what he'd think. I'm very lucky, I've got my wife, I've got two wonderful

What do you think of the start David Moyes has made to his career at Manchester United?

INTERVIEW

ond chance at being a pro snooker player. They asked me would I be interested, I said I would, and it went from there.

By Padraig Conlon

At the end of the show will there be a career in the game for the winner?

The winner gets a scholarship for a year which means they’ll be paid into all the tournaments here in Ireland and I’ll be coaching them, tutoring them along with another coach.

Ken Doherty is that rare Irish person, one who has been the best in the world at their sport.

Since winning the World Championship in 1997 he has gone on to be a great ambassador for this country and the sport of snooker itself. The last few years have seen him successfully make the move into the media side of things. He has just finished recording a new TV show called Ken Doherty’s Lucky Break which will be screened soon on Setanta Sports. We caught up with him in his club in Terenure for a chat.

Congratulations on making your new show Ken Doherty’s Lucky Break, could you please tell our readers about it?

The idea is for the winner to go to the Cue School in the UK and try and get on to the professional circuit.

Red Line Roundup

TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Shauna Moggan attended TEDxTallaght for us as part of The Red Line Book Festival.

As we took to our seats in the Civic Theatre for TEDxTallaght’s Atelier of Ideas last Thursday night, the screen displayed #tedxtallaght tweets in real time, creating a buzz. Later the witty MC’s, Shane Gillen and Darragh Doyle, encouraged more audience interactivity, offering a prize for tweeting the most imaginative topic for a Ted Talk.

Librarian Caroline Higgins introduced the event aptly with a Maurice Sendak quote, ‘Let The Great Rumpus Begin’ and publisher Michael Bhaskar started on the

We at InTallaght were delighted to play a small part in the festival by promoting it in our magazine and look forward to covering it further in the years to come. It is great to be able to promote such a positive venture and one that is run by such enthusiastic, positive and committed people.

ITT Student Union Magazine Fight for Your Future Campaign

After months of work, preparation and meeting TD’s the Fight For Your Future campaign got under way on October 1st. Thousands of students from across all different colleges in Ireland came together and opposed the governments’ plans to cut the maintenance grant for the 5th year in a row.

Volunteering Fair

More than 25 charities and community organisations came to IT Tallaght on Wednesday, October 9th for the annual Volunteering Fair Running from 9.30am to 1.30pm, the fair was opened by Mayor Dermot Looney and showcased a number of community organisations such as Tallaght Youth Services, Cheeverstown, Dublin Community Games and Volunteer Services Ireland.

Class Rep Training

On Thursday the 10th of October we had our Class Rep Training. We had over 50 Reps in attendance to receive their training for their important role this year. We here at ITT SU have implemented a well run class rep campaign, to keep up to date with what is going on in class. Class Reps are the Student Union’s eyes and ears in the classroom. They are our foot soldiers. They communicate with the lecturer about class schedules, projects and any conflicts that arise

The programme of events included talks by some of IT Tallaght’s student volunteers, who through the annual fair have become actively involved with charities. The fair is part of the college’s work of enhancing civic engagement and making links with the wider community. The event was organised by Sr. Bernadette Purcell, Marie Kielty, Careers Officer, and Margaret Fingelton, Lecturer in Social Care Practice, Niamh Hyland, Admin Staff and the SU Welfare officer, Karen Campbell.

during lectures and report back to the Union with any queries or complaints and we act on them.

They are vitally important to us and incredibly important to their class. Each class deserves to have a voice and for that voice to be heard. They also get involved in promoting our entertainment and spreading the message of the Union. Training went very well and each Rep has their clear instructions and objectives for the coming year ahead.

We alone at IT Tallaght signed over 300 people to attend the Demonstration which was held outside The Dáil. Unfortunately due to the poor weather conditions that number was dramatically reduced but collectively all the colleges had a massive turnout.

Each student made their voice heard and stood up to say we are not taking this anymore and we prevailed, for the first time in years the maintenance and back to education grants weren’t cut. Countless hours of lobbying TD’s and even meeting Taoiseach Enda Kenny to spread our word helped us achieve our goals.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE By Rachel Lynch

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the sequel to 2012's megahit The Hunger Games, picks up after District 12 welcomes their winning tributes home.

Katniss Everdeen, as we all know, has won the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, to head off on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games a competition that could change Panem forever.

The media have speculated over the past year about whether director Francis Lawrence would focus more on the love triangle between Katniss, Peeta and Gale. The first movie did tend to focus a lot more on the game but that’s to be expected as we as an audience needed to be introduced to the setting. This time round I believe we will see Jennifer Lawrence’s character in a different light with regard to the romances. That’s not to say the movie won’t be as action packed as before.

One thing is certain fans of the franchise will not want to be disappointed having waited all year for their next instalment.

FIACH MORIARTY Married To Music

46

By Rachel Lynch

GAVIN WHELAN Catch The Air By Padraig Conlon

Gavin Whelan, a thirty five year old musician from Belgard who is widely renowned as one of the most accomplished tin whistle players in the whole country has just released his fifth studio album Catch The Air.

Since releasing his self titled critically acclaimed debut album in 2001 Gavin has worked unbelieveably hard to hone his craft. When not playing live gigs at festivals or venues he teaches at schools, passing on the knowledge he has acquired in his fine career so far.

As well as being a master of the tin whistle he has also become a virtuoso on the uilleann pipes since taking them up when he was 18 and on his latest album he demonstrates his proficiency on both instruments.

Now I am no expert when it comes to Traditional Irish music and won't try and bluff my way through this review. Having grown up in West Donegal however I have been exposed to the genre from a very young age and even today it's fairly rare to not encounter a trad session in my home town at some stage over a weekend in one of the local pubs.

Having got my own musical upbringing out of the way what did I think of Catch The Air?

The album is made up entirely of slow airs, a very quiet and sullen record that I would class as easy listening as far as trad music goes. There's no manic fiddle and bodhrĂĄn bashing here, the album is the type you could play from start to finish if you were in the mood to just sit back and chill out. It's strange in present day Ireland our own traditional music doesn't seem to get the recognition it deserves. You'd be fairly stunned to hear any of it on the commercial radio or television stations outside of TG4/Radio Na Gaeltachta. Yet in the rest of the world there is a growing interest in and appreciation of the musicianship and craft involved. With this in mind I'd highly recommend Catch The Air to anyone as an introduction to trad music. I enjoyed its beautiful melodies and haunting pipe playing as much as I've enjoyed a lot of rock albums I've heard recently. For any younger readers who are interested in learning to play the tin whistle they should listen to how Gavin can play as an example of what can be achieved with the most humble of all musical instruments.

Fiach Moriarty is a singer/songwriter from Dublin. Some of you will have already heard of the young man with a distinctly Irish voice. If you have seen him live you will be taken in by his unusual style of playing the guitar too. His new single Married To Music, which will be released this November, takes in all his unique talents. The song itself is upbeat and although very hard to compare him to anything on the market today he does remind me of an Irish version of Ed Sheeran.

Fiach sings about a number of streets around Dublin where he is from and also where his grandmother grew up, which certainly personalises the song for us.

It feels poetic and with Fiach’s range of vocals it really is a beautiful piece of music with a lot of meaning. The song is quite universal in a sense, as regardless of what genre of music you associate yourself with you will still appreciate this piece of music.

The HP Chromebook 11 By Cathal Jennings

Google has a new product category, and it's called Chromebook. No, it's not really new: it's existed for years, but a lot of people still don't really know about it.

The HP Chromebook 11 isn't much more than a redesigned variant on the hardware already in the Samsung Series 3 Chromebook. It has the same ARM processor, similar battery life, and also lacks a touchscreen. But, the new HP version looks a lot better. Rather than seeming like a cast-off Netbook with a Chrome OS brain-swap, the Chromebook 11 is cute, compact, simple, and attractive. It looks like the simple mini-computer it really is. It's like the iPhone 5c of Chromebooks: you've seen this technology before, but now it looks cleaner, friendlier, and more colourful.

Google Chromecast now offers a way to stream content wirelessly to a TV. All of these make a Chromebook a more interesting bet than even a few months ago. It's not for everyone, but the Chromebook is finally making a case for being a fun, family-friendly product in its own right. The 11.6 inch Chromebook has specs that match a tablet more than a laptop: a dualcore Exynos ARM processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of SSD storage. Inside the box is a Micro-USB charger that's pretty compact, and can also charge up Micro-USB tablets, phones or other devices. Google also includes a two-year, 100GB Google Drive storage upgrade, a 60-day Google Music

All Access trial, and 12 vouchers for GoGo in-flight Wi-Fi, which gets redeemed via the Chromebook itself. The Chromebook 11 is a clean, colourful device, with looks that fall somewhere between any MacBook and kid-friendly PC. The Chromebook 11 doesn't have any visible speakers or vents, and only a few ports -- an intentional move, giving this product a seamless, Chrome OS keeps getting better, smooth appearance. You can pick Google Drive more robust, and from glossy black or glossy white -

- the white comes with yellow, red, blue, or green highlights, which ring the keyboard and tint two rubberized bottom pads. The laptop feels very plastic, but at 2.3 pounds it's also very light. Google says there's a magnesium frame underneath, but it's hard to tell. It feels sturdy enough, but still resembles a budget product. It seems kid-friendly and somewhat able to withstand a knock-around.

Making the whole product seem much more like a laptop-esque tablet than a cheap laptop seems to have been the key to success for the HP Chromebook 11. From its Micro-USB port to its clean colour-accented plastic, it feels like the smaller cousin to the Pixel, part of a new Chromebook family. It even has the same four-color rainbow bar on the back lid, a small "Chrome" touch. A nice fresh look and comfortable feel make HP’s 11-inch budget Chromebook an appealing bet, especially for households that need a cheap no-frills Web-surfing Google Netbook. If you’re not thinking about productivity, though, you’re better off with a tablet.

BEYOND TWO SOULS

For as much praise and critical acclaim that Beyond: Two Souls has garnered since its release a few weeks back the title is a huge disappointment that reaches new heights in passive gaming.

Told in a schizophrenic non-linear format, Beyond: Two Souls forces the user to become a passive participant by giving them a choice whenever an action needs to happen. These choices eventually dictate the type of character Jodie becomes and the story that plays out, though many of the scenes are rarely playable and the user is left The game tells the story of Jodie watching (watching!) a game. actors Ellen Paige and Willem Dafoe provide the voices for the major characters? The game feels more like a computer-generated film with occasional button-play rather than, you know, an actual video game. The story thrusts the user in dramatic moments and action sequences, but the limited and simplistic gameplay seems to take a back-seat to the plot every time. Though it has potential, Beyond: Two Souls should be treated with caution as a novelty game, not a true video game in any kind of traditional sense. Let’s hope it’s not a glimpse of the future.

eVision to challenge UPC & Sky

Eircom has unveiled plans for a television service called eVision, going into competition with both UPC and Sky here in Ireland. The basic package for eVision is €10 a month with 34 channels including RTE, TV3 and BBC, there is also a second tier package available with 54 channels. Sports and movie packages are also available on eVision at additional charges.

eVision will allow subscribers to record two programmes at one time, additional services are also available such as multiroom viewing, which includes a smaller box available for €5 extra a month. eVision also promises free installation to customers by their expert technicians.

Eircom claims eVision will prove a major hit with consumers as it is offering a range of popular channels at significantly lower prices than its main competitors. The managing director of Eircom’s consumer division, Kevin White, said other advantages of the eVision service include a free set-top box which can record up to 240 hours of programmes.

The addition of a third television subscriber should help consumers with hopefully more competitive prices from all three. The first six months are available for free for anyone who subscribes before the end of the year, on their basic package and you will then be charged €10 a month after that. UK Channel Manager Sheelagh Hawkins welcomed the recognition for the firm's hard work from the industry: "This is great news and recognises just how well the entire MXSweep team works with partners to guarantee the successful delivery of services to their end-user customers. We worked really closely with the guys at iCT4 from the outset, so the commercial and technical elements, of what was a complex project, were closely managed at every step".

Nokia shakes up market with “phablet”

Nokia unveiled its first tablet and two large-screen smartphones, known as “phablets”, at the annual Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi. The Lumia 2520 tablet, along with its Lumia 1520 and 1620 phablets, are among the last products the Finnish company developed to compete with Apple and Samsung before deciding to sell its handset business to Microsoft. The new Lumias use Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system and will face tough competition from large-screen smartphones from Samsung and Apple, which is also expected to unveil slimmer, faster iPads very soon.

Visitor numbers rise

Iceland, Finland and Norway top the list of 136 nations, based on political participation, economic equality and rights like education and health.

“Today’s figures from the CSO for the high season months of July to September are very strong, showing growth from almost all of our markets around the world,” ‘said Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland.

Ireland held on to sixth position in the World Economic Forum's report in to gender equality with Iceland maintaining its leading position. The gap between men and women has narrowed slightly in the past year in most countries, according to a World Economic Forum (WEF) report.

The number of people visiting Ireland rose by almost 8% from July to September, according to new figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). There was an overall increase of more than 164,000, compared to the same time last year. Numbers from the US were up over 13%, Europe by 1.2%and the UK by 9%.

The Middle East and North Africa were the only regions not to improve in the past year, with Yemen at the bottom. The Philippines and Nicaragua both feature in the top 10. The WEF has produced the report annually for the past eight years.

“We have a really extensive programme in place between now and the end of the year, targeting late season travellers around the world, to keep this momentum going.”

Writers’ Corner

THE CANARY ISLANDS, A WRITER’S DELIGHT By Eileen Casey

DESPERATE EXCITEMENT By Declan White

While in Venice a couple of years ago, the guide made several references to Ernest Hemingway’s affection for the city, especially his frequent visits to Harry’s Bar, West of Piazza San Marco. After recently touring the Canary Islands, the author featuring most strongly in my mind is an old favourite of mine and one I read voraciously as a younger woman; Agatha Christie. In February 1927, Christie went to the Canaries to recover from psychological strain. Her mother, Clarissa Miller had died after a severe illness, her husband was in love with another woman and she was going through a period of financial difficulties. She stayed at the Gran Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz, the best hotel in Tenerife at that particular time. It is said that while there, Agatha Christie completed The Mystery of the Blue Train, a book which sold so well, it ended her money worries. She then relocated to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria where she stayed at the Metropole Hotel. While there, she wrote The Companion, one of the mysteries included in her collection of short stories, The Thirteen Problems. In The Companion, one of the characters says of the Canary Islands; “They must be wonderful,” while another makes the remark “The Peak of Tenerife is a fine sight with the setting sun on it”. It’s easy to imagine a writer like Christie being so inspired by what she experienced on The Canary Islands, especially as she was so vulnerable at the time. The light is so very different, almost golden in its brightness, one can’t but feel well. No wonder films such as Wonderful Life (a 1964 film starring Cliff Richard) was filmed on the famous sand dunes at Maspalomas. Painters too adore the quality of such glorious illumination.

A desperate excitement at being here, surrounded by a world and greeted daily by an everywhere brightness.

A weeping, laughing questioning at what to do with it; how to reply, to return the courtesy and walk hand in hand.

An awareness in the alert heart, lightly but distinctly palpitating; in the sixth sense tickling the inside of the finger tips; and in the listening stillness of the seated body, saying 'this is the moment, just examined, from the other side of the glass screen. Please do not touch the exhibit'.

Declan lives in Terenure and has only recently started writing. This is his third piece to be published in this magazine.

Eileen Casey is a fiction writer, journalist and poet. Her work is widely published in outlets such as Ireland of the Welcomes, The Irish Times, Senior Times, The Ulster Tatler, the Moth, among others.

SUMMER TRIANGLE By Carolann Copland

of Islamic fundamentalists. Together his new allies and he plot to show Ireland exactly what they think of its cooperation in the US war against terror, but will Majid really get the closure he so desperately craves?

“Meanwhile Irish teen Shona falls pregnant following a drunken party and stumbles through early motherhood in a haze of alcohol. An overheard conversation about her past leaves her wallowing in the self-pity of betrayal and ripe for falling into the wrong hands. “When 08/08 threatens to become Dublin’s very own 9/11 will a chance meeting of the two teenagers hasten their road to self-destruction or help them rise from the ashes of the past? Particularly when there are darker forces at work…”

Local and international themes collide in Carolann Copland’s debut novel.

My first introduction to Summer Triangle was before its official title had even been decided. My friend Emer Cleary, founder of Emu Ink told me a short synopsis of the story over dinner a few months ago and I was delighted to get the chance to design the cover for what sounded like such an interesting book.

Once the final draft had been dispatched to both the ebook publishers and the printers, I got stuck in to reading it. I’ll let the blurb on the back cover speak for itself:

“Shona and Majid are living very different, but ordinary, lives on opposite sides of the globe, when both their worlds are shattered. Majid, who witnesses the death of his fiancé, a bomb victim at an Irish/Saudi festival, is so distraught he runs from his problems – right into the arms

Shona, the heroine of the piece, is far from heroic. She is too young and messed up to cope with motherhood and the responsibilities fall on her baby’s young father Tommy. He was by far my favourite character in the book. He struggles to deal with his alcoholic co-parent while hiding their problems from her parents and still manages to be the best father he can be to their daughter Ruby. Shona is a mess and finds a reason to better herself in a relationship with the handsome Saudi Majid. Majid is also very interesting, in that Carolann makes his character arc much more understandable than I would have thought possible. He is a very human character, with valid feelings and his youth and previous trauma make his actions seem almost reasonable.

About The Author

Carolann Copland is the founder of Carousel Creates, a writers’ centre in the Dublin Mountains. She has a Bachelor of Education in English and Drama and has been a teacher for fourteen years.

Although she writes mostly novels; Carolann loves to dabble with short stories, plays and poetry; writing between Dublin and Andalucia in the South of Spain. From Dublin, Carolann has also lived in the Middle East and the United Kingdom. She is married to Neil and is a mother of three children aged 10 to 22. She is a member of two writing groups and works to promote other writing groups in Dublin. Having spent all her life engrossed in reading stories, Carolann now looks forward to sharing her fictional world with other readers.

The book was officially launched on October 29th and is available to rent or buy in both ebook and paperback forms from www.emuink.ie

Emu Ink’s mission is to serve both authors and readers alike in bringing quality writing to the As I told Carolann when discussing designs for forefront and making it available to, and the cover, I love a good culture clash in a novel affordable for, as many people as possible. and the way Majid struggles with the allure of Western ways, while trying to stay true to his GWEN TAYLOUR Islamic beliefs was a very interesting one. Add Graphic Designer/Bookworm to that the local aspect, and it came as no suprise that I really enjoyed this book. The chapters are narrated by both Shona and Majid and I found myself equally interested in both their points of view. It’s a great story, well told and I’d recommend it to anyone.

BE WINTER READY WINTER-READY By David Frazer

Gardening

DAVID FRAZER

Landscape Gardener

WINTER

GET READY FOR Dahlias can look fantastic from midsummer onwards but looking after them can be hard work at times.

True, there is more to dahlias than just cutting them back, if you live in a very mild area, where you could try leaving them in the ground, cutting them down, and covering them with protective mulch, otherwise you will need to lift and store the tubers. The key to it is keeping them dry and protected from frost. Dig up the dahlias once the foliage has been blackened by the first frost. Leaving on about 10–15cm of stalk, try to remove as much soil as possible and put them in the garage or greenhouse to dry off.

Once completely dry remove any remaining soil and find a frost-free place to store them until spring. You can put them in shredded paper or dry compost and keep dry.

In early spring replace the paper with damp compost to encourage them to start growing. Once healthy shoots and the first leaves appear, and there is no further threat of frost, then you

Dublin Marathon 2013

62

A record number of over 14,500 runners took to the streets of Dublin on Bank Holiday Monday to complete the 2013 Airtricity Dublin Marathon. People from all over the world and all shapes and sizes descended on Dublin to take part in the 34th running of one of Europe’s most popular races.

The road to Croker for St. Aidan’s National School

St. Aidan’s Senior National School girl’s football team started their campaign during a very humid September. The panel of 29 girls began weekly training for the Corn Irish Rubies under the guidance of Ms Maher and Ms. O’Connor.

Competition was very tough for places and the girls’ skill levels quickly became very sharp. With a quarter final fixed for the same week, the girls showed no sign of fatigue. Having a home fixture against St. Peter the Apostle, the students of St. Aidan’s showed great support for their team. The encouragement from the sideline crowd clearly spurred the girls on, and again, they dominated in all positions. Their experience gained in previous matches was evident, as was their growing confidence. All of this guaranteed a place in the semi-final.

Having already exceeded previous school achievements, tensions were high as the girls prepared for the semi-final against Gaelscoil na Camóige. With new emphasis on tactics and training, the St. Aidan’s girls realised that playing in Croke Park was now an attainable target. They listened carefully and took all advice on board.

as Croke Park loomed. Captain Ann Okikiolu led by example once again. Her experience at St. Marks G.A.A. Club was evident to all spectators. Each team member displayed outstanding focus and determination. With exceptional performances from each player, it was no surprise that St. Aidan’s had booked their place in the final.

Primary school teacher Sean Hehir (28), from Kilkishen, Co Clare, landed the race in 2:18:19 on a cold morning, holding off the advances of Joe Sweeney who finished just behind him. Sweeney's DSD clubmate Maria McCambridge was the big women's pre-race favourite and the defending Irish champion McCambridge did not disappoint and retained her title in 2:38.51. The real winners on the day were the hundreds of charities who benefitted from the endeavors of the runners.

With the final fixed for Croke Park on Tuesday the 5th of November, great preparations are now underway in St. Aidan’s S.N.S. It has been 17 years since a school team has reached a final in Croke Park. Despite all the excitement, the girls remain focused and are eager to participate in training over the midterm break. Regardless of the outcome on Tuesday 5th November, this outstanding group of girls are already heroes in our school. For the team, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity which they will never forget.

They would not have been able to progress this far in the competition without the unwavering support of the staff at St. Aidan’s S.N.S. In addition to this, their principal Mr. O’Philbin has been very supportive throughout the season. Businesses in the local community have also showed their support and they are grateful for all of their financial contributions that have ensured all children in Windy weather conditions most definitely in- the school will have a memorable day out in fluenced the run of this game. Despite this, Croke Park next week. Wishing St. Aidan’s St. Aidan’s took an early lead. Managers Ms National School’s 2013 panel all the best! Maher and Ms O’Connor, held their breath

Also on the Monday the 28th October a Black Tie Ball was held by the IABA Dublin County Board in the main ballroom of the hotel for the presentation of the Tournaments’ Cups to the outstanding boxers of the festival and importantly to commemorate the great Dublin boxing legends in whose honour the Tournaments Cups were being named and presented on the night.

Boden and Judes fall at the Semi Final Stage!

There was heartbreak for the two Southside teams remaining in the Dublin Senior Football Championship when they were both defeated in Parnell Park on Bank Holiday Monday. St Judes were first up against reigning Dublin and Leinster Champions Ballymun Kickhams.

The Templeogue men were in touch after a keenly contested first half and were two points down at the break but Ballymun’s class showed through in the second half and they outscored Jude’s by 7 points to run out 6 points victors and march into their second consecutive county decider.

They will be joined by St Vincents who scored four goals past the Ballyboden defence to eventually run out comfortable 9 point winners. The Boden men have the consolation of a Hurling County final to look forward to when they face Lucan Sarsfields in a all Southside affair on Sunday 10th November in Parnell Park.

Player of the Year By Padraig Conlon

64

As the curtain came down on another season all that was left to be decided was the Rovers player of the year awards. The fans had cast their votes with the results being: Barry Murphy Player Of The Year; Karl Sheppard Young Player Of The Year. The Junior Hoops voted Stephen Rice their Player of The Year. The lads were presented with their awards pre kick off and at half time in the last game of the season versus Sligo Rovers in Tallaght.

Barry Murphy Player Of The Year

He played his part in The Hoops promotion the following year and went on to make a total of 151 appearances before he found himself frozen out with the arrival of Alan Mannus midway through the 2009 season.

Barry joins the illustrious group of Rovers players who have won the Player of The Year award twice. Eight years on from his last win in 2005 (he also won Young Player the same year) his fine form this season Murphy's standing among Rovers hasn't gone unnoticed by the fans suffered when he committed supporters. the cardinal sin of signing for Bohs in 2010. A couple of injuries interrupted his season, a calf strain at the start of April followed by a much more serious bruised liver sustained in the friendly against Birmingham in July which kept him out for five league games. In spite of these set backs he had a great season and his performances against Dundalk in the opening game of the season and Drogheda in the EA Sports Cup Final stand out. Last January he spoke to SRFC TV about wanting to “win the fans back on side,” it would appear that is now the case.

Stephen Rice Junior Hoops Player of The Year

Without doubt Ricer is the heart and soul of Shamrock Rovers, a fans favourite who always gives 100%, he has been one of the League Of Ireland's most consistent players since joining The Hoops towards the end of 2007.

InRovers leave him on 225 games played for Rovers in all competitions, an outstanding achievement. With his contract due to expire soon all Rovers fans will be hoping that Ricer is still a Hoop come the start of next season and he gets a chance to add to his two league championship, two Setanta Cup and one EA Sports Cup winners medals.
