Welcome to Edition 47 of InTallaght Another year has rolled around and we hope 2014 has started well for you. Here at InTallaght we're back at work filled with motivation and good intentions. We've knocked the doughnuts on the head and Ed is down to eight coffees a day. For any of you still struggling with the “January Blues” thankfully the worst of it is nearly over and Spring is on the way. If you have already broken all your New Year's resolutions don't be too hard on yourself, as that noted life coach and renowned philosopher Homer J Simpson said: “You've tried your best and you've failed miserably, the lesson is...never try!” Congratulations, you did it! You didn't quit smoking, you've ditched the new fitness regime and you're back to square one. All’s right with the world, Happy New Year! On that positive note let me finish by saying we hope you all enjoy this, our first edition of 2014. We have interviews with Hollywood megastar Ben Stiller, local indie rockers Leaders of Men plus all the usual features you've come to expect from InTallaght Magazine. The more things change, the more they stay the same!

The roller coaster will be the second biggest in Europe in terms of speed and length. The coaster will be 1.4km long, and 32m at its highest point. It will be able to take 700 people an hour, according to a Tayto Park source. There will be two trains on the attraction and each of them will have 12 seats. Adopted Woman Discovers Birth Mother Living Five Minutes From Family Home Sharon, Aoife & Emer At The Launch
An astonishing story, which tells the tale of a young girl who tracked down her birth mother with her adoptive dad – and discovered she had been living five minutes from her all of her life – has been told in a new book. Searching For Me – My Adoption Story, written by Aoife Curran and published by Emu Ink, was officially launched on Monday, December 16th, in The Morrison Hotel. The book, which was launched by Director/Producer Sharon Lawless, the woman behind TV3’s hugely successful Adoption Stories series, tracks

Many fantastic entries were received and the judges had a challenging job but eventually agreed on the winners. The Mayor complimented all the photographers and said “It is wonderful to see how people capture the beauty, diversity and colour of our parklands.”
Aoife’s time from her birth, through to adoption and the painful teenage years shrouded in questions before eventually leading into a fascinating story of discovery – one not without its ups and downs. The event drew a large crowd to the city centre hotel, including the author’s parents, birth mother, half sister and adoption worker, and by the end of the night there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght thanks supporters 2013 was a big year for the Fundraising Office of The National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght in which they tried to build on many of the successes from previous years. The National Children’s Hospital Fundraising Office, based in the main atrium of Tallaght Hospital, is open between 9am and 4.30pm every day and all donations are processed, receipted and acknowledged through this office. Every year donations are used to purchase vital pieces of equipment, to fund research into paediatric illnesses and to create a child friendly environment for the patients and families cared for in this very special hospital. Community fundraising plays a huge part in contributing to the added extras that the hospital cannot fund. Throughout the Easter period of 2013, Tallaght resident Ann Carthy and her team of volunteer knitters and sellers raised €19,477 from the sale of Knitted Easter Chicken egg cup covers. These funds went towards the purchase of an advanced child mannequin which is used to train medical professionals and parents on the skills of child resuscitation. In May 2013 the Tallaght and Rathfarnham Gardai cycled from Tallaght to Kilkenny and raised a fantastic sum of €12,348 to purchase a computer system that will be used in the Children’s Emergency Department to

facilitate a quicker flow of information between departments to aid diagnostics, to improve their young patients’ experience and to reduce waiting times. They were delighted to welcome The Square Towncentre as the corporate sponsors for their Women’s Mini Marathon Team. Ladies from all over Ireland raised a total of €13,313 taking part in the marathon. In October 2013, Jack Martin from The Square Towncentre ran the Dublin City Marathon and raised the fantastic sum of €11,399. These donations, as well as proceeds from the National Pancake Party, the annual Golf Classic and the Christmas Raffle went to fund many worthy projects at the hospital including: an autism software assessment package, materials to support the speech and language department, flatscreen televisions for use in the playroom and on the wards, portable pulse oximeters for use on Beech, Maple and Oak wards, mattresses for parents to sleep on and covers to ensure infection control, electric breast pumps to facilitate mothers who are breast
feeding, an artist programme for young patients and those waiting in the outpatient and emergency departments, a fish tank for the children’s theatre waiting area, humidifiers for respiratory patients and most recently, Christmas decorations for all children’s areas. They were delighted to receive a visit from Jedward, as well as Robbie and Claudine Keane, in December 2013. They are currently fundraising to purchase two large pieces of equipment, namely a paediatric echocardiography machine and an ultrasound machine for use in their Community Paediatric and Emergency Departments. The upcoming campaign is the National Pancake Party and we would urge as many people as possible to register to host a Pancake Party at www.pancakeparty.ie and raise funds. You can host a Pancake Party at a location of your choice between March 1st and March 4th. For more information on The National Children’s Hospital Fundraising Department see

Leaders of Men
24
INTERVIEW
filters to get through.
By Padraig Conlon
Does this make for a lot of rows? All: Yes! Ed: Nobody beats about the
Leaders of Men are a local five piece indie band who are just about to release their very first single.
bush, if we think something is crap we’ll say it. Dean: It’s all for the greater good though. Brian: Yeah nobody takes offence; if he (Ed) tells me “That’s sh*te” I don’t get upset about it. It’s healthy and it works, so far we haven’t killed each other!
InTallaght Magazine met up with three of the lads: lead singer Brian Ashe, guitarist Ed Porter and drummer Dean Byrne to chat about this exciting moment in the group’s career, their story so far and their plans for what we hope will be a very successful 2014 for the band.
What has been the highlight of your career as a band so far?
First up lads, how long have you been together and how did you meet? Brian: As a band we’ve been together since the end of 2011. We all worked together in Captain Americas in our teens, that was where we first met. We were all in different bands before this and when they ended we decided to make a little Tallaght supergroup! For the last two years we’ve been gigging, we’ve done some great shows like Longitude and Indiependence, plus we’ve played with Mumford and Sons, Jake Bugg and the Stereophonics, which was amazing. As well as this we’ve been churning out demos, which has got us to where we are now and our first single which is called For Want Of A Better Word and is out on Valentine’s Day.
Could you tell us about the single? Brian: It’s kind of a tongue in cheek song about adultery and a
guy who cuts off his nose to spite his face. It went to radio at the start of January, Paul McLoone played it on his show on Today FM and they named us Irish Act of The Week which we were delighted with. The reaction so far has been amazing, we’re really excited and our management is really excited. We’re shooting the video for it next week, it’s going to be very controversial. There’s no point me telling you anything about it because it’ll ruin the whole thing!
Is the single off a forthcoming album then? It’s off the EP Alexander House which is also out next month..
How would you describe Leaders Of Men musically? Brian: I suppose we’d be indie rock and roll. Other people have said we sound like Interpol or The Verve, which is great to hear and a massive compliment.
What’s the story behind the band name? Brian: There’s not a huge story behind it really. The usual one we say is Bono came to us in a dream! Ed: It was literally the first name that came to us. It sounded pretentious so we liked it! Dean: It gives us something to live up to! Brian: It’s also the name of a Joy Division song and we can relate to the whole suburban aspect that came with them. Dean: It can be really polarizing at first when you say the name people sometimes roll their eyes! We’re all humble people though really!
Who writes most of the songs? Brian: It’s very much a collective thing; everything gets done between the five of us. We’ll get a few chords together, I’ll throw a melody over it, bring it to the jamming room and then everyone gets involved. It’s a five way thing which is great as you’ve got five
Brian: The biggest buzz so far was last year when we got signed to Big Life Management. They also look after The Verve, Scissors Sisters, George Michael, Lisa Stansfield. The guy in charge of the label is Jazz Summers who we would all be big fans of and he’s someone we always wanted to work with. He was over here last year at a Scissor Sisters show in The Olympia and someone gave him one of our demos. He loved it; he said it reminded him of The Verve which was very exciting or us. After that he took us over to London to record four songs. He wanted to hear what new material we were working on, we played it for him and he said that’s an EP, which became Alexander House.
Did the label try to change anything about the band? Brian: No not all, we knew a lot about them going into it regarding how they work. Jazz lets his artists evolve. He’ll point you in the right direction but he’ll
InTallaghtMaster47.qxp_Layout 1 22/01/2014 18:08 Page 25
25 Do you guys all still live in Tallaght?
If you could go on tour supporting any band in the world who would you pick?
Ed: Yeah we all do apart from
Dean: It would have to be U2
our bass player who has emigrated to town!
because they’re the biggest no?! Ed: I’d say Interpol. Brian: I agree, they’re our band, we love them. Dean: Yeah I suppose I’d have to agree with the lads there, Interpol it is! They seem so untouchable; no one ever gets near them. That’d be the dream. Brian: It’d be a dream for them to work with us! I’m sure if you asked them that question that’s what they’d say! I can see the headline now: “Paul Banks Says Yes To Leaders Of Men”!
never change anything.
Is there any rivalry between the Tallaght bands? Brian: No not all, we all get on really well; we look out for each other. There’s a great scene here at the moment with a lot of brilliant bands and we’d love to all do some kind of festival together here in Tallaght. It’s something we’ve all talked about; it’s just tough getting everyone together at the same time. It will happen but we want to do it right. It’d be incredible to do it in the Civic and do it for charity.
What are your thoughts on the current Irish music scene? Brian: There are a lot of good things happening in this country right now, there’s a lot of recognition and focus being put on it. Hosier have just got a huge deal, Kodaline are doing really well, there’s so much coming out this year, it’s very very healthy and it’s great to be part of it. When we go to London they all know what’s happening here, which wasn’t the case 10 years ago.
What can people who go to one of your gigs expect? Dean: They can expect a show that’s really really loud and really energetic. We’re not going to play anything we don’t like ourselves. There’s no filler tracks at our gigs, we’re genuine, what you see is what you get.
How much have you evolved as a band?
against the odds, doing something that you shouldn’t do, making songs that were 6/7 minutes long, very self indulgent. We’ve reined that in now a bit but kept what we wanted to. Dean: We really notice when we go back and listen to ourselves from two years ago, you can hear it’s the same band but we’ve gotten better.
Finally lads what are your plans for 2014? Brian: What we’re focusing on right now is the release of the single next month. It’s our first time having a single on the radio and we’re all really excited to see which way it goes, either in the bin or really well, whatever,
because at least then we’ll know. But we’re very confident in the song. We want to play a festival as well and we’re working on our album which is due out near the end of the year. Every day of the week we’re in the studio working, writing songs. Ed: Last year we played Longitude and we didn’t even have a single out so depending on how the single goes will decide what festival we do. We’re just in negotiations at the moment. Brian: If the single goes to number one we’ll be able to charge a lot more! Dean: And pick what stage we’re on, that’s the way it works! Ed: Fingers crossed then!
Ed: We’ve evolved hugely, even in the last six months, probably because subconsciously we all realise this is it, the pressure is on now, if we’re gonna do it we have to do it now. We’re not getting any younger, I’m 27 which is a dangerous age! I’m either going to die this year or do something amazing! Brian: We were actually just talking about this ourselves about 20 minutes before we sat down to talk with you. When we started out we made music that was all about going

34 THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY By Rachel Lynch
Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) is fed up with his life.
ROBOCOP By Rachel Lynch
Most of us will have heard the title of this film before, and if you haven’t already seen the original well then you are in for a treat.
If you have, well then it’s time to see how far technology has come over the past few decades. RoboCop, released this February, is a remake of the 1987 film of the same name and is a science fiction action film directed by José Padilha. It is the year of 2028, multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years and it's meant billions for OmniCorp's bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the
home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy played by Joel Kinnaman a loving husband, father, and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit is critically injured by a car bomb in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing, there is still a man inside the machine, pursuing justice. Although it is obvious that there will be a number of differences between the remake and the original we are led to believe the basic premise is more or less intact. If you have seen the original, the trailer will confirm that much at least. The advancement in effects in the short three minute trailer makes it completely different to the one of 1987. The action sequences seem to be much slicker and the creativity from director Padilha is clear from the onset.

35 THE WOLF OF WALL STREET By Rachel Lynch
Leonardo DiCaprio takes on the leading role of Jordan Belfort in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. The story is based on Belfort's own memoir about getting insanely rich from conning investors. From the beginning we witness the interesting and controversial lifestyle of stockbroker Belfort play out. His boss, Mark Hanna played by Matthew McConaughey, plays an influential role on the young man’s direction in life and recommends that he adopt a lifestyle of drugs and prostitutes in order to succeed. But this type of luxury comes at a price.
Jonah Hill is terrific in his role as Belfort’s right hand man Donie Azoff. As you can imagine he provides a number of humourous scenes. Belfort now has more money than he knows what to do with. At one point in the movie we see his father approach him about an obscene bill for a dinner he had one evening costing well over $20,000, his reply “Dad, who cares? We are rich!”. This is Scorsese and DiCaprio’s fifth collaboration together in a movie that will certainly spark debate and controversy. It’s really up to you to decide whether the film is one that showcases the reckless pursuit of wealth or does it serve as a cautionary tale against it? Either way it’s fast paced and enjoyable, some may say Belfort and his team are living the dream, buy surely all good things must come to an end at some point. Or do they?

37 Disneyland park is about to get a MAJOR Star Wars VII makeover
After dropping more than $4 billion for Lucasfilm, we knew Disney was going to double down on Star Wars — and it sounds like the next phase of the plan involves Disneyland. In a big way. The Tomorrowland area of the Anaheim theme park is set for a massive overhaul, which will incorporate elements from the upcoming Star Wars VII, according to some new reports. So, yes, that means some extremely lucky theme park geeks now know all the juicy plot details. Yeah, we’re jealous. There were apparently already some plans in the works to incorporate the Star Wars brand into Tomorrowland, but now it sounds like we’ll be getting that full-fledged Star Wars Land we always dreamed about. The mysterious new Episode VII elements will reportedly be combined with the existing plan to add attractions such as a Millennium Falcon walk-thru, a Tatooine cantina and a speeder bike race set in an Ewok village. So why did they go ahead and let the park folks in on the Episode VII plan almost two years before the film’s planned 2015 opening date? Because it takes an even longer time to redesign and build a theme park, and even with the heads-up, it’ll probably be 2017 before Star Wars Land can open wide.
Bryan Cranston rumoured to have signed on as Lex Luthor in Man of Steel 2
The rumor mill continues to churn over who might play Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel sequel, but a new report indicates that one of those old names might’ve been right all along. The hosts of the Team Amasian podcast claim they have confirmed that famed bald man Bryan Cranston will play classic Superman baddie Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman. Cranston was rumored for the role off and on for most of 2013, along with everyone from Bradley Cooper to Mark Strong. So is it true? It’s certainly possible, though obviously unconfirmed. Cranston is a buzzy actor with some major cred from his stint on Breaking Bad, and he’s dabbled in big sci-fi flicks with projects like the Total Recall reboot. Heck, he also voiced Jim Gordon in the animated DC film Batman: Year One — so there’s a definite interest in the genre. Though he comes from humble beginnings on Malcolm in the Middle, and his Total Recall role was less than memorable, we still think Cranston would be a great pick for Luthor. He was more than enough of a badass in Breaking Bad to prove he has the substance to go toe to toe with Superman, Batman and even some rival meth dealers.

38 J CASEY Still Wondering By Padraig Conlon
Justin (J) Casey is another very talented local musician who has also just released a debut single. Still Wondering is a beautiful, deeply personal song which deals with Justin's experience of two massively traumatic events in his young life; the loss of his father to suicide three years ago and the death of his best friend.
GAVIN DOYLE Blush By Padraig Conlon
Nineteen year old local singer songwriter Gavin Doyle recorded the very first single of his career just before Christmas. Titled Blush it is a bittersweet ballad that deals with the emotions felt at the beginning of a relationship and is delivered by Gavin on his acoustic guitar. The song, which Gavin wrote over two years ago, was inspired by a previous relationship, so all the feelings expressed are genuine and heartfelt. As first singles go this is a brilliant piece of work and Gavin should be very proud of himself. If the song gets the level of attention it deserves it will do very well, the twin themes of love, and the emotions it inspires, are universal ones which eveyone can relate to. Last August Gavin appeared on the RTÉ TV show The Hit where he performed Blush. The song was well received and Gavin was given praise and encouragement from music industry heavy weights like producer Steve Lillywhite and Westlife member Nicky Byrne. In the competition Blush was one of two songs chosen by Ryan O’Shaughnessy from a pool of six to go up against against singer Brian
Kennedy's selections. Ultimately Gavin was pipped as O’Shaughnessy chose the other song. Ryan O'Shaughnessy co-produced this single, alongside Aidan James and studio owner Cian Donohue, which was recorded in Block C Studios in Ballymount. The proceeds of this song are going towards a local community charity ‘NINA for Life Suicide Awareness'. Gavin is currently a student at Pulse College in Windmill Studios where he is studying for a BA Hons Degree in Music Production. Regular readers of InTallaght Magazine may also recognise Gavin from his involvement with Teen Line and the charity single Never Alone which was released last year. Along with Luke Clerkin Gavin co wrote the song which charted well on iTunes, even passing out legends like Eminem and Artic Monkeys along the way! Gavin is also in a band called 48:Hours, some of whom also feature on Blush. He and the band will be playing at a fundraising gig in aid of Teen-Line Ireland in The Unitairan Church on Stephen’s Green on Saturday March 1st along with Mongoose, Theresa McKenna, Aaron David Nestor and Dan Coxon, SecondHarmony and Calvin Hynes and Kevin Rooney. For more see
www.facebook.com/teenline
In spite of the heavy lyrical content of the song it is remarkably upbeat and filled with hope. The opening of the track, with the piano and snare drum, reminds me a little of Green Day's When September Ends before the vocals come in and Justin sings “Still wondering why you went away, not a day goes by I don’t say. Still wondering how I'll find my way, through this darkened land I pray.” The first verse deals with his father's suicide and the slow singing style of the start of the song changes to a rap which works really well and makes the song even punchier. After dealing with the loss of his friend in the second verse the song finishes up with J wondering how he will carry on and why “you left without saying goodbye.” Anyone who has ever lost a loved one will really relate to this song big style. It is a beautiful track and J should be commended for being so honest and open in what is an excellent debut single.

International CES 2014
By Colm O’Muirí
The world famous CES show took place in early January and featured some of the world’s newest and most innovative inventions.
Bendable UHD TV to consumers around the world,” said HS Kim, executive vice president of the visual display business at Samsung Electronics.
With Sony and LG all making major announcements the one which caught our eye the most was Samsung and their prototype of the world’s first curved television. The television starts out as an 85-inch flat screen UHD TV, however with the press of one button the television transforms into a curved TV. Following the tremendous reception for both televisions received at CES, and in the days after Samsung announced the inevitable, that they would be making both products available to consumers.
The bendable TV is amazing and the videos from CES are well worth a watch, the bending of the TV only takes about seven seconds to complete its magic trick. The Consumer Electronics Show, CES, was first held in 1967 and it is only since 1998 that the show has become a yearly event held in Las Vegas. Over the years many innovative products had their debut at CES including the Video Cassette recorder (VCR) in 1970, the Compact Disc Player in 1981, the Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) in 1996 and the Plasma TV in 2001 to name but a few.
“Given the tremendous media and industry reception for these new products, we are excited to bring our 105” Curved UHD TV and 85”
One of the other announcements at CES which caught the attention of InTallaght was the announcement of the Playstation
Now which is a video game streaming service which will allow gamers to stream a selection of PS3 titles to their PS4 and also to their Sony Bravia, even if you don’t have a PS4. Samsung also announced the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro tablet which is a massive 12.2 inch tablet that is sure to rival the iPad Air. The Oculus Rift showed off the Crystal Cove as well which is a video game but with goggles which judging from the video of people trying it out at CES is going to be truly amazing when it is made available. CES did not disappoint this year with many amazing products on show and some major announcements such as the WWE network and the announcement that many television manufacturers are focusing on the emerging 4K technology which could spell the end for 3D televisions.

42 GRAN TURISMO 6 By Colm O’Muirí
FORZA MOTORSPORT 5 By Colm O’Muirí
Forza Motorsport 5 is an exclusive title for Microsoft’s Xbox One next generation console and was one of the launch titles for the console.
the car, you will not be disappointed. It is worth noting however that you don’t see as much of the spectacular scenery on offer from the cockpit camera inside the car as you would with the camera from outside the car.
As with all of the titles so far on both next gen consoles the graphics on show in this game are phenomenal. As you would expect, all the cars look great and even better though is the sound of the engines which really add to the game’s overall experience.
Forza have truly outdone themselves with this latest offering from the franchise giving the user a multitude of choices with 200 cars on offer from over 50 different manufacturers including Mazda, Audi, Volkswagen, Subaru and many more.
It is not only the cars which are visually perfect, it has to be said that the circuits, spectators and crew are all impressive. With some games it feels as though the spectators are after thoughts but I was really impressed with what Turn 10 Studios have done with the game and they have really gone into detail on this. As I said above, the cars and circuit both look visually amazing and whatever view you choose to race with, whether it is from the cockpit or outside
Forza continues to impress with the number of circuits on offer with 14 amazing places to choose from. Some of the tracks on offer are Silverstone, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Circuit De Catalunya.
My personal favourite though has got to be the infamous Top Gear track. Like with everything else on offer in this game it looks great and with commentary from Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond or James May also available, it is
definitely going to be a hit with fans of Top Gear. Forza 5 is a truly amazing racing game and is sure to delight anyone lucky enough to have an Xbox One at their disposal.
Gran Turismo 6 is the sixth instalment in the Gran Turismo franchise but the twelfth overall in the series from developer Polyphony Digital. The game is exclusive to Sony and is available on the Playstation 3, there are no plans as of yet to release Gran Turismo 6 for the PS4.

Gran Turismo 6 looks great but having reviewed Forza 5 for the Xbox One it just isn’t up to par, and never would be as it is not on a next gen console. However the cars and circuits look great and it boasts something which Forza or any other racing game cannot compete with: the cars
on offer and the number of them to choose from. Gran Turismo gives you an astonishing 1,200 cars to choose from including Ferrari, Aston Martin and Bentley along with 37 tracks including Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Matterhorn. The overall graphics in Gran Turismo are very good but other than the car in front or behind the overall trackside experience is very bland, with very little happening and will hopefully be addressed for future instalments. To mark the 15th anniversary of Gran Turismo there is also an anniversary edition of the game with 20 extra cars and numerous other features exclusive to the anniversary edition. Gran Turismo is a game without many flaws and is sure to be a hit with fans of the franchise and driving games alike but having seen the beauty of the next gen games you can’t help but wonder how much better this game would be on the PS4.

NISSAN QASHQAI By Rachel Lynch
The Qashqai has been a massive success for Nissan, and has been consistently one of the best selling cars on the road. When it was first launched back in 2007 it virtually had this class to itself. Now it is competing against many other rivals, yet still manages to come out on top. The new 2014 model is without doubt one of the best small SUV or crossover cars on the market. It offers you the customer 4x4 styling but without the extra running costs. I headed down to Windsor Belgard showrooms in Tallaght to
view the new model. There I spoke with sales manager Derek Hamilton who told of his excitement of the new arrival: “This car lives up to its expectations, it’s equally as good, if not better than the last car. I’ve driven the car myself and it doesn’t just look nice it also drives lovely. Even the entry model has a nice spec on it”.
plastic that surrounds the piano dashboard trim only adds to the stylishness of the car.
The appearance of the model has varied slightly but not the extent that it cannot be recognised as a Qashqai. The new model is ever so slightly longer, wider and lower than its predecessor.
Practicality is certainly Qashqai’s strength. There is plenty of head and leg room and the boot is one of the largest in its class. It even has false floor panels that let you divide up the space or change the load height.
All the controls seem nice and solid. They are also easy to use whether you go for the standard layout or the higher spec models. The new model is also packed full of useful storage which is great for large families.
The interior is where Nissan really outdoes itself. The soft touch black Plenty of small SUV style cars offer a comfortable ride or agile handling but the Qashqai manages to combine the two.
The Qashqai is one of the quietest and classiest cars of its kind, it’s also the most practical and a personal favourite of mine to drive. When you consider how well this model will hold its value over the years, as well as reliability you are investing in a car almost for life. Head down to Windsor Belgard today to test drive the all new Nissan Qashqai, you won’t be disappointed.

JOHN LE CARRÉ The Constant Gardener By Gwen Taylour
This is the second le Carré novel that I’ve read and also the second that I’ve reviewed for the magazine. The first I borrowed from my boyfriend, this one from my mother. It just goes to show the wide reach of le Carré’s demographic. Judging by this novel, I’d be keen to read more of his 23 books. Considering that he was 70 when he wrote this one, it pulses with the energy of a much younger man. The story was a bit slow to get going and for the first few chapters I doubted whether I would enjoy it as much as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, but once the story really got going, I found it hard to put down. The novel opens in northern Kenya with the gruesome murder of Tessa Quayle, young, beautiful, and dearly beloved to husband Justin. When Justin sets out on a personal odyssey to uncover the mystery of her death, what he finds could make him not only a suspect among his own colleagues, but a target for Tessa's killers as well.
A master chronicler of the betrayals of ordinary people caught in political conflict, le Carré portrays the dark side of unbridled capitalism as only he can. In The Constant Gardener he tells a compelling, complex story of a man elevated through tragedy as Justin Quayle, amateur gardener, aging widower, and ineffectual bureaucrat, discovers his own natural resources and the extraordinary courage of the woman he barely had time to love. In an interview with The Observer, le Carré explained what he intended the novel to be about: “At the level that is closest to me it's about somebody making an interior journey and discovering, after a flawed life, some kind of morality. Beyond that it's about the same subject that I've written about right from the beginning, which is man's relationship with the institutions he creates whether they're intelligence institutions or commercial.” I thought the story was a fascinating look at the pharamaceutical industry and the corruption of governments and bureaucrats by big business. I found the cosy colonial atmosphere at the start a great foil to the raw danger of the latter half of the story. It was exciting and surprising and though the very end didn’t quite live up to the proceeding momentum, I actually thought it quite fitting. I have yet to see the film but if it is any where as good as the book, I’m in for a treat!
About The Author John le Carré is the pen name of David Cornwell. He was born in Poole, Dorset, the son of Ronnie Cornwell, who engaged in swindles and was imprisoned for fraud. According to the author, this has been one of the reasons that themes of secrets and deceit recur in his work. His father's chameleonic character inspired the novel A Perfect Spy (1986). During the 1950s and the 1960s, Cornwell worked for the British intelligence services MI5 and MI6, and began writing novels under a pen name. His third novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963) became an international best-seller, and it remains one of his best-known works. Following the success of this novel, he left MI6 to become a full-time author. The Constant Gardener is his eighteenth novel and was released in 2001. In 2005 it was adapated for a film of the same name by Jeffrey Caine, which starred Ralph Fiennes. The film was directed by Fernando Meirelles and was nominated for four Academy Awards and 10 BAFTAs. Le Carré has resided in St Buryan, Cornwall, Great Britain, for more than forty years where he owns a mile of cliff close to Land's End. le Carré has declined all honors offered to him, stating that he will never be Sir David.

Boost for local businesses as South Dublin County Council announces €1.2m fund for small and medium business support scheme Businesses in South Dublin County are to be boosted with the establishment of a €1.2 fund to ease the rates burden on the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector. This new countywide business support scheme was unanimously approved by the elected members at the council meeting held on the 13th January 2014. The fund which is potentially open to 70% or 4,700 of the total commercial ratepayers will be paid as a financial support to occupiers of properties in the administrative area of South Dublin County with annual rates bills of less than €10,000 in 2014. The support payment will range between €75 and €670 depending on the annual cost of commercial rates for the applicants property. In order to be eligible for the fund, applicants must pay their commercial rates (including arrears) in full by the 31st July 2014. Ratepayers paying by direct debit will be afforded a year end deadline. The applicants must also participate in and complete an Economic Profiling Survey being conducted by South Dublin County Council in conjunction with the South Dublin Chamber of Commerce. The Mayor of South Dublin County, Councillor Dermot Looney, said: "I am delighted that the Council has approved this scheme following the decision of members to include a €1.2 million fund in our 2014 Budget. Retailers and small to medium enterprises make up the majority of businesses in South Dublin County and are vitally important to the local economy. Many of these companies have been hit hard by the economic slowdown. Councillors have, in recent years, sought to support these companies and their employees through rate reductions and freezes and a range of business supports. I am proud to support a scheme which prioritises smaller enterprises and targets local employment, growth and innovation.” More information can be found on the council’s website at: www.sdcc.ie/business/

LUAS exceed 30 million passenger mark for first time ever Numbers reached 600,000 per week in 2013 and the light rail system also carried 1.2 million more passengers than during the previous year, representing a 4% increase. In its first full year of operation in 2005 it attracted 21 million passengers but the figures have been growing steadily ever since apart from a drop in numbers in 2008 and 2009 when the economy stalled.
Extensions to the service to Saggart, the Point depot and beyond Carrickmines that opened in 2010 and 2011 increased passenger numbers. "Dublin is clearly suited to light rail and the construction of the Luas Cross City link will mean even more passengers," he said. In August 2012, An Bord Pleanala granted permission for a Luas extension, which will run from St Stephen's Green to Cabra, as well as connecting the existing Red and Green lines.
Google Inc took its biggest step to go deeper into consumers' homes, announcing a $3.2 billion deal to buy smart thermostat and smoke alarm-maker Nest Labs Inc, scooping up a promising line of products and a prized design team led by the "godfather" of the iPod. The deal is the second largest in Google's history after the $12.5 billion acquisition of mobile phone maker Motorola in 2012. Like the Motorola deal, which marked Google's first major foray into hardware, the Nest acquisition gives Google a stepping stone into an important new market.

Irish Taekwon-Do win Four Nations
Sam’s For the Hills Sam made the journey up the hill to St Annes GAA club on Friday January 17th and was greeted by a large crowd who were keen to welcome Sam back after his year in Donegal. Paul Manion was on hand to get his picture taken with the famous trophy and sign the jersies for the young kids. St Annes is a very active club and cater for kids of all ages in both hurling and football.
The Irish Taekwon-Do team recently won the Four Nations for the first time in 17 years at the Irish open in the Basketball arena. The competition consists of three events; Team Patterns (Synchronised movements), Sparring and Power Breaking.
Check them out for more details at
www.stannesgaa.com The Irish Team were crowned Four Nations Champions after an exciting and nail-biting competition during the Irish Open. The Four Nations is a unique annual event between the RITA and UKTA teams of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales which has been running since 1988. Originally a male only event this year saw mixed teams of males and females competing. The last time Ireland won was back in 1996 and there have been many heart-breaking second places until Saturday saw them lifting the Ki Ha Rhee Cup.
Pats Signings Champions St Pats pulled off the biggest deal of the close season to date on the 23rd of December when Irish International Keith Fahey signed for the Inchicore club. Christmas came early for the Pats faithful and Twitter and Facebook were abuzz as the news spread.
The Irish Team consisted of Captain Leon McSherry, Adam Fox, Gerard Finn, Laura Tobin, Roisin O'Neill and Patrick Choi, they were coached by Master Stephen Doyle (Old Bawn Taekwon-Do School) who himself was on the first Irish Team to win the Four Nations in 1994.
This coupled with the signing of Ken Oman, Derek Foran, James Chambers, Conor McCormack, Lee Lynch and Mark Quigley sees the Champions in good shape for the new season, and at the time of writing the bookies have installed them as 2/1 favorites to retain their title!

53 Looking forward to 2014 We look forward to the sporting year of 2014 with some trepidation, we have no World Cup to look forward to but following the draw in December many of us are already planning our late nights next summer watching our second favorite teams. And we await the draw for the 2016 Euros to see just how hard of a task the dream team of MonKeano have.
The Irish Rugby Team may have lured us into a false sense of security with their recent heroics against New Zealand and many will view the upcoming Six Nations with suspicion. With Ireland having to face both France and England in their own back yard it is the harder of the two sets of fixtures to complete. On a provincial level the recent results have seen Ulster, Leinster and Munster qualify for the last 8 of the Heineken Cup and a mouth watering All Ireland final in Cardiff is very much on the cards.
The Hurlers will look to improve on their All Ireland semi final defeat but with a young Clare team rampant, and Kilkenny sure to be looking to settle old scores it will be a hard task.
Domestically the soccer season due to start in the spring is sure to be the most open for years at the time of writing it looks like it will be a hard fought battle with Shamrock Rovers, St Pats, Sligo Rovers and Dundalk all habouring title ambitions. Shamrock Rovers will hope to hit the ground running after the misfiring start to the last two seasons and the Hooped faithful will hope for a flying start! With the Winter Olympics on in Russia in February, the Commonwealth Games on in July, as well as the ubiquitous Golf Events, Racing Festivals and others 2014 is sure to be an action packed year for the sports fans! Bring it on!
Do you have some sports news for us? On the GAA front Dublin will find it hard to match the achievements of 2013, back to back All Ireland titles have been hard to come by and if Dublin don’t win Sam again it will be viewed by many as a disappointment, such are the expectations.
If your local sports club has an event we should be letting our readers know about or if you know of a particularly good sports news story from the area, just email it to us on sports@intallght.ie and you might see it in our next edition!

Martin O’Neill

INTERVIEW
here about somebody I haven't actually spoken to. I know Shay and I've spoken to him a number of times but that was before I took the job on.
By Padraig Conlon
I may be a million miles out of my ground because he may have no intention of coming back, but I certainly wouldn't discount it if I'd had that conversation and he was thinking about coming back.
Republic of Ireland manager Martin O Neill held his end of year press conference last month and InTallaght Magazine was there to hear the new gaffer’s thoughts and put a few questions of our own to him. What has been the main difference for you between club and international management? It was really strange after the Poland game because you say cheerio to the players, and then I don’t see them collectively until March. I felt that was really strange. It didn't really hit home for a day or two.
What have you been working on since then? I've been going to watch a lot of games to see the players in action for their clubs. You have a problem at times going to matches as you're not sure whether the player will be playing. You’re hoping that (Wes) Hoolohan might get on at some stage or might start the game but that is totally the manager’s prerogative. I would never ask the manager beforehand. As a club
manager, I wouldn't want a manager to ask me about my team. Going to Everton you can be fairly sure Seamus (Coleman) or James (McCarthy) will be involved. Stoke likewise one or two of the lads will always be playing. It's been very interesting.
Would you ever advise any of your players to think about moving clubs to enhance their international chances? Absolutely not, there was nothing that irritated me more as a club manager than to find out that a couple of my players who I had fallen out with were playing international football and the international manager said that they should move. I do not want to be running around telling Wes Hoolohan he should do this or that. He mightn't be playing regularly for Norwich this season but I thought he was
excellent for us against Latvia last month. I wouldn't not pick someone because they are not playing regularly for their club but it does make it easier to pick them if they are playing more regularly.
Have you spoken to the players since the Poland game? No I haven't and I’m not going to make a habit of talking to the players all the time, they have heavy club commitments at this time. Just let them get them out of the way.
Shay Given has recently said he would be interested in resuming his international career, what do you think about that? I would not discount that at all. I haven't spoken to Shay but I would like to at some stage, if he says 'I'm back' then we'll look into it. But I am having a conversation
What are your thoughts on the new 24 team format for the next European Championships? It’s nice to hear that some people have said that we’ve already qualified, it means that I can put my feet up and not worry about it! Ah no being serious it is important we get our ranking up so we are seeded second for the draw for the qualifiers in February. I must admit I didn’t know until John told me how important those particular things are. He mentioned some weeks ago how important it is to win certain friendlies. I thought it was only a friendly and it didn’t count but they do seem to count. I wasn’t aware of that.
Are you alarmed that we are now ranked so low? We are where we are, it’s been a disappointing year and we’ve dropped from 41 to 67; that’s where we stand. Do I want to improve it? Obviously I do. Are you going to improve it by winning some matches? Yes. Do I always want to take the easy option? I don’t think so. Do I want to get absolutely thrashed in some matches, with resulting
InTallaghtMaster47.qxp_Layout 1 22/01/2014 18:15 Page 55
55 consequences for confidence of players? I’m not so sure I really want that either. Are we going to win a game of no benefit to us? I’ve no idea. But I will formulate one. If we are going to drop to fifth seed potentially for the World Cup, of course I have to have a look at that.
Will you be taking more an interest in the League Of Ireland than the previous regime? I think someone possibly mentioned here the fact that it might just be a PR exercise if I start coming to matches in the League of Ireland. That might be right. But then I was reminded that about seven or eight players currently playing League of Ireland football before they were transferred to England. So you never know; there might just be someone who is good enough and playing here – maybe two or three – and who could within a year be playing Premiership football and then hopefully for the Republic so we will be monitoring that.
Finally Martin there has been talk that yourself and the new management team are going to use the “Granny Rule” in order to bring in some new faces into the squad? As a player I was never a big fan of the Granny rule but being a practical man I would be reluctant to be viewed as foolish for failing to recruit talent to the Irish cause so we will pursue new recruits in the new year, but we will not be begging anyone. I’d like the players to have some enthusiasm
about wanting to do it. I might glean that from other sources and I probably would do but eventually, when I get to talk to the player, I’d like him to be bursting with enthusiasm. If he isn’t, well I can’t say that’s the end. I might have to do a bit of persuading but if I’m having to do an awful lot of persuading then I’m not wildly sure it’s worth it. When we were in Northern Ireland we had Jimmy Nicholl who was actually born in Canada, but spent all his life in Belfast. Chris Nicholl was actually born in England. Did I ever think Chris ever never wanted to play for Northern Ireland? Absolutely not. In fact, I loved him playing in the team as he was great for us: so strong, he gave us a bit of protection at the back. He had an English voice but I never viewed him in any other way other than playing for Northern Ireland. Fast forward to now, whatever the rules are, as you say Jack used them to his advantage and in those days I don’t think anyone complained because the
Republic hadn’t any real success in a long time and Jack brought success. If he brought success with Ray Houghton having a Scottish accent, who really cared? You talk about the ethics and the process of eligibility but if other countries are doing it and you felt because you had a stand on it, or didn’t do it to your detriment, I think people would probably pronounce you as rather foolish perhaps.
If you are not stretching it beyond belief, well, I think I would have to use it. If I thought someone within these rules might improve our team I would use it.” If they’re unable to get into someone else, I know it seems to cheapen it somewhere along the way. At this minute, those are the rules and whether I like them or not, I’m going to go with them. We don’t have a phenomenal choice of players so I will go with it. If their heart is seriously not really in it I think you might be able to suss that relatively quickly. If you’re asking me here to sit and pontificate on something,I’m not going to do it. Growing up, would I have agreed with the rules that are set in place? No. I wouldn’t have done. Now that I’ve reached maturity, or supposed to be mature, then it's different!

Jonathan Roche

INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon
Just before Christmas came confirmation that Rovers will enter a B Team in the First Division. We caught up with chairman Jonathan Roche to find out more about this major new development for the club.
Could you tell our readers how did the new team come about? Well we have prepared for this over the last two years. We first applied for it in July 2012, which was rejected and we applied again this year and it was accepted. We did also approach St Patricks Athletic and Sligo Rovers and they had no interest in it, Sligo are in the Connacht League and St Pats had no interest whatsoever.
marks a significant aspect in the development of the club, on the football side of things and it should create player pathways for years to come and also fulfils all the football ambitions we have with regard to winning league titles and bringing players through.
Another big aspect of this is is to put the club in a position to be able to attract the best players from Dublin and beyond to our schoolboy set up. This will make a pathway for players not to go to So what is the club's motivation behind this? the UK on very very small We're doing this because the clubs scholarship programmes. They got rid of the A Championship, we can now actually sign for us at 16 as they'll have three different were one of the clubs that didn't want to get rid of it but the rest of pathways now, our under 19's, the clubs did and since that there's our First Division team and our been a gap between the 19's and first team. We believe this will attract a regular flow of players the first team where there's nowhere for players to play. This is into our first team squad. If it a problem we've had over the last yields one or two a year, brilliant. At the moment it is difficult to two years and the only solution bring a 17 year old into the first we feel is the First Division. It
team. If they have been playing in the First Division this makes it a lot easier.
Is this a long term development or are you just going to give it one season and see how it goes? Yes it is as we've got a minimum commitment of three years. We have read with interest the negative responses from other clubs towards the FAI for approving the proposal but we did attempt to canvass opinion, we did ask two clubs. Hopefully some clubs who have said they would like to do it will do it next year, which will make the division stronger.
What is the rule regarding playing first team players in the First Division? We're only going to be allowed to play three outfield players and a goal keeper from the first team squad. We will be naming a first
InTallaghtMaster47.qxp_Layout 1 22/01/2014 18:15 Page 57
InRovers
57 team squad at the start of the season and work off that. This is all about developing players, it's not about us gaining an advantage and having our first team players playing. The First Division has changed dramatically in the last ten years, it's a young league now, the average age of the players in it is 22, it's not like it was years ago.
Can this new team get promoted or play in the cups? No we can't get promoted and we can't enter the cups so it's very simple just 28 games, 14 home 14 away. We will be playing the home games at Tallaght Stadium. This is a significant investment for the club, financially and logistically, there's a lot of fixtures and a lot of players involved.
How will these extra games effect the pitch? I don't think it will effect it because it's summer football. So far the pitch has always stood up to everything and I think the stadium are very confident of being able to accommodate games on a Friday and Sunday. It won't obviously be every week. Season ticket holders will get in free to the First Division games, one ticket two teams.
Do you think if other Premier Division clubs follow Rovers and enter teams in the First Division that the quality of the promoted teams may not be up to standard? If a team goes up they generally then have to balance their squad to fit the standard they will be playing at anyway so in that regard it won't be different.
Who is going to be
the manager of the new team? The manager will come from the exisiting backroom staff. Either Colin Hawkins or Noel White.
So have you got many new posts to fill ie. new physios, coaches etc? Well it's a club initiative so everyone at the club has bought into it, the physios, the medical staff, coaches – everyone has bought into it and will now be behind it. On some occasions both teams are going to be playing on the same night, which will be weird. So we're going to be busy! It's going to be good for the area because I feel we're going to get decent crowds for the first division games so more people will be needed for the stadium.
What is your target for that team, win the First Division? Really to develop players, that's it. We can't go up and winning that league isn't really important. All we want is to be bringing through two or three players from that team every year, that's the target.
So it's all change off the pitch as well with the new shirt sponsor and new Warrior kit? Yes it is, the new home jersey is nearly sold out already, I think we sold nearly 500 jerseys before Christmas which was great. We had Pepper on the sleeve last year so we have dealt with them before. The season ticket sales are going well, we've kept the prices the same and of course they get the First Division games also. Because we don't have Europe we're hoping to have some big friendlies lined up for the summer. Obviously a friendly doesn't replace playing in Europe, we hope to have them confirmed soon.

60 HIS OR HERS By Mari Maxwell
The lipstick stood between them. Decadent brown. Sheer. A gold tube on the kitchen table. “It’s not mine,” Annie told her husband. “I don’t do browns.” “Who do you suppose?” There were no answers. The puzzle endured with the arrival of chocolate scented mascara. The mocha swirl eye shadow palette appeared next. The mystery remained for another week. By then the entire neighbourhood knew. The milkman and the newspaper boy hadn’t missed the first hints. The O’Briens next door, and even Fr. Martin down at the priory knew every sordid detail. Their son Mark wasn’t who he appeared to be.
