Welcome
Welcome to Edition 49 of InTallaght
St Patrick’s Day is on the horizon, a day for family and friends to celebrate their Irishness, a day of celebration for the GAA with their club Finals in Croke Park and the focus of Seachtain Na Gealige, a two week long celebration of the Irish Language. But alas already the radio shows are abuzz with negative chatter, the newspapers writers are sharpening their quills.
So what if 20 odd government ministers are going abroad to sell Ireland, we hear it every year, it never changes and the mindless moaning will not help. There have already been calls on national radio for the pubs to close to stop the anti social behavior that the media cover with glee each year. Is it ever as bad as they report? I don’t think so. So this year go to the parade or watch the match, tell every American you meet that you are Daniel O’Connell’s great great grandson but don’t be afraid to venture out. It’s not the Sodom and Gomorrah that the media would have you believe!
Happy St Patrick’s Day everyone!

10 The Irish Fairy Door Company Will Install Little Fairy Doors So That Fairies Can Move In & Become Friends With Visiting Children
Permanent New Magical Fairy Wood In Corkagh Park Launched by Mayor Looney
Working with South Dublin County Council, the “Fairy Wood” is sponsored by The Irish Fairy Door Company, an Irish-owned company who make little fairy doors for children to place in their homes so that fairies can move in and become their friends. Discover little fairy doors hidden high up in the trees, amongst the leaves.
You can download a map online or you can simply scan the QR code on the signs in the park to access the map on your smartphone. The map tells the stories of the trees and the fairies that visit. The name of each of the fairies has been written on a plaque below the tree they live in with a description of what they do. There are many fairy characters to discover such as “Big Red” the guardian of the fairy wood; “Ray” who helps the sun shine through the trees and “Luna”, the moonlight fairy. There is also a fairy picnic area, a “Worry Tree” where you can leave all your worries behind and a “Wishing Tree” with a special seat where you can sit and make a wish! The Corkagh Park Fairy Wood will be open all year round and we’ve been told the fairies will be visiting Tymon Park very soon.
Bus Rapid Transit Public Consultation
The National Transport Authority has launched a public consultation on proposals for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network for Dublin – “Swiftway”. Full project details and response facilities are available now on the Authority’s website at www.nationaltransport.ie.
Members of the public are invited to review the proposals and submit their suggestions and feedback before the deadline of 5.00pm on March 18th.
BRT is a high-quality, high-capacity, comfortable form of transport, offering attractive multi-door vehicles, off-board ticketing and frequent services along key strategic corridors using a priority bus lane. It offers the performance and service characteristics of a light-rail system like Luas – but at about a third of the cost. BRT services will connect with the existing Bus, Luas and Rail network in the city, enhancing the benefits of the public transport system for everyone.

New Baby? Cura Dublin Offering Free Support Service Baby Boom
72,225 babies were born in Ireland in 2012, with birth rates in the last 5 years the highest they’ve been since 1980. That’s a whole lot of nappy changes, feeding times, and sleepless nights for us to deal with as a population. Being the parent of a new baby, even if it's not your first, can be challenging, leaving parents and guardians feeling stressed, exhausted, and sometimes feeling alone. As Denise Naughton, Project Worker with Cura’s Dublin Centre explains, that’s why Cura are offering support and practical information to parents.
Personal and Emotional Support
“There’s definitely a need out there for this kind of service.” says Denise. “It could be a mother with a colicky baby who just won’t stop crying, and she just needs a bit of support and reassurance, or a father who isn’t allowed to see his baby, or even a grandparent who is concerned. Maybe someone just wants to talk. We will listen. We can be there for them and help them through it.”
Cura Cares
Counsellors in the Dublin centre are providing information on rights and entitlements, as well as personal support and counselling. The service is free of charge to all parents, grandparents and guardians of babies from birth to one year, and is provided on a one-to-one basis or over the phone. Cura’s Tallaght centre is located at TWS Hse, 1-2 Main Street, with centres also located in Dublin City Centre and Blanchardstown. Tel 01 6710598

INTERVIEW
what sets him apart is his ability to pass the ball quickly and accurately.”
By Padraig Conlon
It's the springtime of 1994 and as Shamrock Rovers continue on their march towards a record breaking 15th league championship one 14 year old Hoop in the crowd is taking it all in. The youngster's name is Stephen McPhail and he is the grandson of Rovers physio Paddy Doran, a highly promising up and coming player with a love for the Hoops who has spent that season travelling around the country following the club. Twenty years later, and after a journey that's taken him via Leeds, Barnsley, Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday, the circle is complete as a 34 year old McPhail steps up to curl a wonderful freekick into the back of the Glentoran net in his first appearance as a Rovers player. Looking back now McPhail feels that his early days following Rovers were fundamental in his development as a professional footballer.
“Back in the early nineties my grandad was there with Ray Treacy and I got quite close to most of the lads growing up, I got to see how they trained. It was great. It was a great time.
"I loved my football from a young age and to get a chance to go into the League of Ireland to see
it at first hand at such a young age, I think helped me a lot. My favourite players were Stephen Geoghan, Gino Brazil and James Keady. This is something I've always wanted to do,” recalls McPhail.
How did this modern day Irish football prodigal son end up signing for his boyhood favourites? “I had spoken with Trevor at Christmas when I was back over from England. My children are going to school over here and I took my time making the decision, but, in the end it was easy because I want to see my children grow up, to be there for them.
"Being away from them and my wife Michelle was horrible, saying goodbye every Sunday and knowing it would be a week, at
best, before I could see them again. I'm a dad and I want to be there for them. So, okay, there was a lot to think about because I have been in England nearly 20 years now, but I know exactly what I'm going back to. Rovers are the only club I would play for here,” he said.
A year after Ray Treacy led Rovers to that league championship win McPhail was on his way to England after coming to the notice of Leeds United, who secured his services in 1995. Stephen’s career was really starting to blossom after three years in the academy of Home Farm under the tutelage of the late Paddy Hilliard who said at the time that “Farm have produced some brilliant players over the years but even by their high standards Stephen is a bit special,
Looking back this was a tough transition for the young kid from Rush. “While I was so excited to be going to such a wonderful club as Leeds United it was all a bit daunting for me really. I was only 15 and it was my first time living away from home. The first few months were difficult because I was very homesick. I enjoyed the football side of things though and I appreciated how lucky I was to be at such a big club.
“Gary Kelly was so good to me in those early days, he made me feel at home, he made sure I was looked after, that I was sorted for boots and gear and that. He made me learn, showed me how to behave on the pitch, and how to train well. He was amazing for looking after the young lads. There were some great players to look up to, I was very lucky.” Around this time the Yorkshire side were putting together a formidable youth team squad and McPhail lined up alongside Paul Robinson, Harry Kewell, Alan Smith and Jonathan Woodgate in a team that lifted the 1997 FA Youth Cup. “That was such a brilliant time, after winning the cup all the talk was which one of us was going to get in the first team next. To all come through together like that was amazing and something you don't see so much any more in the game.”
On the back of that cup success McPhail, and half of the victorious team, effortlessly made the step up to the Leeds first team.

“I still remember my debut against Leicester City away in February 1998, it was massive.”
The Leeds manager at the time George Graham came out and said that McPhail was the “new Liam Brady.” Did this heap extra pressure on the young Stephen?
“No it didn't, to be honest with you, I didn't take much notice of it at the time. George was great, he helped me so much and brought my game on. He taught me what it would take to make it in midfield, he really worked on my defensive game. He didn't last too long though before he made the move to Spurs but David O Leary kept it going.” And keep it going he did. As the millennium came and went Leeds United were one of the most feared teams in the Premiership. The years following the championship win of 1992 were filled with massive under-achievement. Suddenly the Elland Road faithful were watching exhilarating attacking football and every week a new youngster was coming off the bench to make it even better.
At the time the Premiership had become populated with cheap, old, foreign imports and Leeds seemed determined to counteract that by producing so many home grown players. There was a youthful vitality that shone in their style of attacking play. “That was a special time, we done really really well, we stamped our mark in the

Premier League and in Europe. I remember getting my first goals for the club away to Chelsea, it was just before Christmas ‘99 and everything was going great. The following season we also had that great run to the Champions League semi finals. I remember coming up against Rivaldo in the Nou Camp and he was unplayable, completely gave me the run around! He was the World Footballer of the Year at the time and he was definitely the toughest opponent I ever faced, he was on another planet!” Just as everything seemed to be coming together for McPhail he was struck down with the first of a series of Achilles injuries that ruled him out from the latter half of 2001 and most of 2002. He could only watch from the sidelines as everything Leeds United had worked for over the previous five years came crashing down around them. “It was so frustrating because of the injuries there was nothing I could do to help the club that I loved and who had given me my chance. The club probably spent a lot more money than they could afford as they were so used to qualifying for the Champions League. It's such a shame what happened and the eventual relegation in 2004. My time there was great, I can’t thank the people enough, the fans were amazing.
“The club has fallen out of the top league and beyond, and it’s a shame because I know what it means to the people in Leeds, I lived there for nine years. I know how passionate they are about the club. It’s such a shame after all those good years that they fell away.
“When you make your debut, you always remember the club that gave you your first chance. I am no different. We had some great games to be involved in, I never wanted to leave.”
McPhail’s time at Elland Road was coming to an end, curtailed by a combination of injuries and David O’Leary’s spend-happy approach which blocked his route back into the first team after the likes of David Batty, Eirik Bakke and Olivier Dacourt arrived. In the relegation year of 2004 then manager Eddie Grey said the midfielder was “one of the best passers in the game, if Stephen had just another yard of pace he would have been as good as any player I have ever seen.” Following a short loan spell at Notts Forest in 2003, and a brief return to Leeds, McPhail finally left the Yorkshire club in 2004. A move to Barnsley meant he remained living in Leeds but then 2006 saw the chance of a move to Cardiff City.
“When the opportunity to move to Cardiff came about I was excited because I'd lived in Leeds so long that the time had come to get away. I could have stayed in Yorkshire but I went and spoke with Dave Jones, who was manager at the time, and he completely sold it to me. They had a new stadium and were putting together a very strong squad.” So began another chapter and McPhail's time in south Wales would lead to him captaining the club to the FA Cup final in 2008 where they ultimately lost 1-0 to Portsmouth.
Stephen McPhail
“To lead out such a good team at Wembley was an honour. The memories of that day are still really clear, I remember the feeling waking up on the morning of the final, this was something you dream about when you're a kid, leading out a team in the FA Cup final at Wembley. I just took it all in, whereas the match itself is a bit of a haze. I just remember the feelings I had when I walked out and saw all my family and friends in the crowd. Looking back now at the fact I was one of a select number of Irishmen to captain a team on FA Cup final day is a massive high. ”
lymphoma, a relatively rare form of non Hodgkins lymphoma.
“No not at all, the manager obviously had his way of playing and I can't knock him for that, he got us to a major finals for the first time in 10 years which was a great achievement. On a personal level he was a very nice man, always respectful, I would've loved to have been involved but I have no complaints whatsoever.”
Next up for McPhail was the three weeks of radiotherapy required to get rid of his cancer. Manager Jones thought it would aid his recovery to spend this time away from Cardiff and the player himself decided Dublin was where he wanted to be. Treatment in the Mater Hospital was organised straight away.
“It was a massive shock, I was still playing twice during the week while I was awaiting the results to see if the cancer had spread from my throat to other parts of my body. Those seven days waiting for the results were though, by far, the worst. Prior to this I had played 56 games in a year and had felt great. That was the only seven days of worry. I knew after that exactly what I had. But up to that it was, did I have it in my stomach or whatever?”
Just a couple of days after that Wembley defeat McPhail joined up with Giovanni Trappatoni's first Ireland squad for a training camp in Portugal prior to the friendlies with Serbia and Columbia. He appeared in neither game and never got called up again by the Italian. Is this something that still rankles with him?
“I remember the feeling going in, and I remember the feeling coming out. it was one extreme to the other. I thought I'd never moan about anything again. I was on crutches going in, I think I threw them away coming out. It was a brilliant feeling, my whole body just relaxed. It was nice to ring my parents to say everything was grand.”
Towards the end of 2009 he'd been feeling unusually tired and had a constant sore throat. He noticed he had a small lump in his jaw yet a visit to a specialist showed nothing untoward. Still not feeling well he went to see the club doctor who referred him to hospital. Tests showed he had cancer, a stage one malt
“The first two or three weeks went quite well, the treatment just involved me lying in this machine every day for three weeks for eight or 10 minutes. I never felt anything. You just hear banging, like an MRI scan. While I was in getting my treatment I met people who are at death’s door, little kids struggling to stay alive.

Stephen McPhail
It makes you appreciate things much more. As well as this I was also recovering from a torn thigh muscle. Coincidently I was getting treatment from Tony McCarthy who is now involved with Rovers, and he was wonderful, he did a great job. “It wasn't until the final week of treatment that I began to suffer. I developed blisters in my mouth, a sore throat, and couldn't eat food properly for five or six days. Every time I sat down I felt like sleeping.”
With his treatment finished he went back to Cardiff at the start of 2010 to help with the club’s promotion push. His body had other ideas though and another diagnosis, this time of Sjogren's syndrome, a condition which includes arthritis and joint inflammation. “Initially, it was the fear factor because no one knew anything about it. It was just getting through that period and seeing how the body reacted. Luckily for me, I've found a bit of treatment that is working. So I keep that going and, as I said, just try and keep fit and healthy. That's the main thing.
"I went to see a specialist in LA and he gave me a treatment to go through and I have it every six months, just to keep on top of the syndrome I have. That sort of squashes it and keeps it at bay. It's just a day in hospital and you are out. I have a few days of recovery after that and I'm fine. I train within three days of the treatment. That's how I keep on top of it."
What have his early impressions of Rovers been? “It was good to get such a great start with the 5-1 win over Glentoran. I've been getting to know everyone and it's been great, they're very good players, very hungry and professional, everyone's pulling together.
“I'd heard great things about Trevor before I signed and I'm really enjoying working with him and really impressed with his philosophy for the club.
“I'm really looking forward now to the start of the season, I know it's going to be difficult as the league is very strong and Pats, Derry, Sligo and Dundalk will all be challenging but I'm confident we will be challenging too. “I'll be cramming two seasons into one so I have to make sure I stay fit, I don't want a break, I'll just need to be managed a bit different to the lads.
“Physically and mentally, this is the best I have been and hopefully I will live a long life. What has happened to me in the past has made me a lot stronger and changed the way I live. This is a great chance for me, I can't wait to get stuck into the challenge.” As the 2014 League Of Ireland season kicks off all Hoops fans hope that the season ends with one of their own helping Rovers reach the summit of Irish football again.

Hypothermia is also common if you do not invest in good quality gear, especially for your hands and feet. We are constantly changing gear, we’ve changed ours, and invested in better gear, to avoid getting frostbite.

Out of the expeditions that you have already competed which would you argue was the most tedious or difficult?
Inspired by a trek to Everest Base Camp in 2005, Paul Devaney from Longford assembled a team of classmates from Aeronautical Engineering class at University of Limerick to take on Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world. Thus the seeds were sown for an epic mission to translate ideas into action and conquer the Seven Summits - the highest mountain on all 7 continents under the new banner of 'Irish Seven Summits'.
How does an engineering graduate from County Longford get involved in mountaineering?
Well I was in Hong Kong at the time, working for Rolls Royce and I was also playing Gaelic in the Asian Gaelic games. I was playing in intense humidity, like 90 something percent humidity, and a girl I worked with there asked me “Why don’t you go to Nepal and get a Sherpa?” Once I went to Everest base camp, I was hooked.
What was it about mountaineering that appealed to you?
It was partly being above the clouds, it was very relaxing. I was
working as a service manager for Rolls Royce at the time and I constantly had meetings out of airplanes, this was a way to clear my head, and there’s no phone reception up there, so it gives you a chance to think.
How and why did you get involved in the Irish Seven Summits expeditions?
I heard the reference “Seven Summits” and looked it up; I found out that it was not that popular, that less than 300 people had done it. It was pretty cool, and if you ever do it you get to go to and see all different places in the world. Also it was also very sports related.
During these expeditions what sort of challenges and struggles do you and your team endure? One major challenge is being affected by altitude sickness; luckily not everyone is affected by it. Altitude sickness or Hypoxia is very dangerous if you don’t get down the mountain quickly and get treated, the results can be lethal, you can die. The more mountains you do the more you’re familiar with the symptoms like when we were on Cerro Aconcagua in South America I lost my balance and I had some dizziness on the way down the mountain. That’s when you usually experience these symptoms, on the way down.
The most dangerous out of the six would have probably been Mt McKinley in Alaska. It was a threeweek expedition; the mountain was at least 20 foot high with snow and ice going up the entire summit ridge. While we were on the edge of the mountain the man beside me began swaying and slipped off the mountain. Since we were all roped together I had to jump off the other side of the mountain so we’d balance out. Which was a scary thing to have to do.
How do you mentally and physically prepare yourself for these expeditions?
Well physically since last July, I’ve trained and lived in the National altitude Training Centre in the University in Limerick, which I share with my team and other athletes including Olympic athletes. I train in progression; my training program includes running, upper and lower body cardio, endurance exercise, trx/core training, dragging sleds around the court and three hour hikes up mountains, just you alone listening to music. I also

23
train in altitude (between 3- 5,000 meters) carry a bag of around 20kilos and run as fast as I can. I basically live in altitude, I train, sleep, and make dinner in high altitude levels, so my body will be prepared and be able to adapt by the time I go to Mt Everest.
Mentally, that’s much harder to do. To prepare you have to put yourself in very bad weather conditions, get pictures of the mountain, and check all the sides of the mountain so you’re prepared, talk to people who have done it and try replicate how it would be.
Another amazing thing was when I saw the guestbook with Charlie Bird’s name in it, that’s from when he did an Antarctica documentary. When we reached the top of the mountain, we had 30 minutes on the summit, being there, looking down at all the snow and ice and all the tiny little people below.
Paul Devaney
We did work for Laura Lynn House and we got great craic out of it. Then we heard about Liam’s Lodge House, we thought it was a great charity. I met with the founder, Tony Heffernan whose children were both diagnosed with Battens Disease. His daughter passed away from the disease in 2011. Liam’s Lodge is a great project, a great initiative because for children, hospitals are very scary places, when they see all those wires. Liam’s Lodge will provide a nicer environment for children and provide facilities for parents, to save them staying in hotels while their children are being cared for.
Your expeditions are 100% charity focused and since 2007 Irish Seven Summits have been raising money and awareness for Irish charities, such as concern and the Laura Lynn Your most recent climb House, why did you was in January, were you choose Liam’s Lodge climbed the Vinson house this year? Massif in Antarctica, How How are you getting was that experience? your message out to the public, through It was amazing; the social media? journey itself was truly amazing. I had to go there in a Russian Transport plane; we landed on a blue ice runway at the research station there.
A lot through social media, mainly Twitter and Facebook. By simply updating Twitter regularly and posting photos, it shows people, this is what we’re doing, this is our new environment. The Irish Times also recently wrote an article, writing about the charity
and us and Shannon FM followed us throughout our Antarctica Expedition.
So if anyone wants to donate to the charity where could they go? On our website,
irishsevensummits.com, there is a donate button you can click.
Finally, do you have any plans after you complete the Irish Seven Summits?
I’ll have to go back to work and start earning money again but before that I'll have to take some recovery time. You lose body mass over these expeditions, you would lose about 12 or 13kg. I’d like to go on some normal holidays, sun holidays.
Do you have any plans to go on any more expeditions, like the Seven Summits?
I won’t be doing stuff at that scale again. I might try and take a solo expedition to the South Pole in the future, it wouldn't be for about 5 years, these expeditions are extremely expensive you see. I quite like adventure, but adventures change. We hope to catch up with Paul once his final challenge is complete but in the meantime track his progress on irishsevensummits.com or follow him on Facebook:

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL By Rachel Lynch
The Grand Budapest Hotel sees a range of completely different actors come together in another film brought to us by the quirky director Wes Anderson. Our own Saoirse Ronan takes on an interesting role alongside Ralph Fiennes, Jude Law, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe and Adrien Brody. Even the minor roles are dominated by major names like Owen Wilson. The film is set in the made-up pre-war Republic of Zubrowka, where familiar but fictional fascists are spoiling for a fight, it is in a world all of its own.
The Grand Budapest Hotel recounts the adventures of M. Gustave, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.
The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune all against the backdrop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent. To top it all off Gustave has been accused of killing wealthy guest Madame D. played by Tilda Swinton.

KYLIE MINOGUE Kiss Me Once By Sandra Gannon
This is the first album to be released under her new management, Jay Z's label Roc Nation to which she signed last year. The album has been four years in the making as her last album released was Aphrodite back in 2010.
The second song Million Miles starts with guitars. Real guitars, of the kind she used on 1997’s , near-career-breaking, Manic Street Preachers assisted Impossible Princess.
The first single, Into the Blue was released at the end of January. It features a soft string piece and is modern, electro dance. It’s also very catchy and should fit right in to the current pop scene.
The most interesting song on the album has to be her collaboration with the very talented Pharrell Williams, I Was Gonna Cancel which was written and produced by the man himself. It has a very retro funk feel to it.
The album will have eleven tracks and even feature Enrique Iglesias on a track titled Beautiful. This track has an electro sheen and powerful singing by both vocalists.
By Karen Hammond
The Wire not to be confused with the popular American drama series, is the most recent single from American pop rock band Haim. A catchy tune that was written and recorded in 2012, it doesn't sound like a typical break up song because its both vibrant and fun, however it becomes more obvious when you hear lyrics, such as “I know it’s hard to hear me say it, but I can’t bear to stay”. The songs breathes raw emotion, as the lyrics are real and remarkably honest.
Kiss Me Once is the upcoming twelfth studio album by Kylie Minogue.
In May 2013, when discussing the album with Rolling Stone, Minogue stated that the album was "bringing out something different [...] which is cool". She also recognised that she had to "do something different", but added that the album "will maintain the DNA of what a Kylie track is, because I'm on it. I like to try and move the goalpost and experiment with different sounds."
HAIM The Wire
38
The song Les Sex has been touted by critics as the best song on the album and had been expected to be the lead single. The songs on Kiss Me Once are completely different to what Kylie usually writes. The fourth track Sexy Love has been described as "Disco-tinged and with a hint of slap bass" to which Kylie sings "You look so sexy in my head, you looks so sexy in my bed”. This prompted comparisons to Rhianna, though Kylie’s image has been traditionally perceived to be more “fun” than sexy.
Kylie Minogue hasn't gone back to the love song days with Jason Donovan, she has stepped fully into the 21st century and is coming out with some very good songs to show people that after so many years she still knows how to make a hit.
The main theme of the song is commitment or more so commitment issues, if you can’t grasp the concept of the song by merely listening to the track, the music video will be of some assistance its pretty self explanatory in the video we witness the Haim sisters “dumping” their respective other halves.
In contrast to the songs meaning, the video is laced with humorous moments and the music is positive and fun. As catchy as the music may appear, this is in fact a break up song, The song has a universal appeal because everyone reading this has been in a position like that, at one point in their lives, everyone has experienced a heartbreak once or twice...or three times. Haim will be coming to the Olympia Theatre Dublin on March 10th as part of their European Tour.

HOW NETFLIX IS CHANGING HOW AND WHEN WE WATCH By Fergus McNally
The world's largest subscription videostreaming service Netflix is changing the way we watch television and seems set to revolutionise the industry.
Since launching here in 2012 it has gained more than 150,000 Irish subscribers and they may be happy to hear of a welcome change of tack on the company’s policy of mass release. All 13 episodes of House of Cards Series 2 were made available on the platform in one go on St Valentines Day and reports from the U.S. suggest a staggering 668,000 watched the entire series over that weekend.
This new phenomenon, called binge watching, is replicated in all the territories in which Netflix is available. Latest figures report between 7% and 10% of all European subscribers finished at least one episode of the American political drama and the average subscriber watched 5 episodes as opposed to an average of 3 in the
US. This suggests binge watching is even more prevalent this side of the pond! Netflix Co-Founder Mitch Lowe said recently that although binge watching is a fantastic PR stunt it is not the right way to build an audience. I for one agree, we all remember the excitement on a Sunday night as we awaited the new Love/Hate episode and the conversations at the “watercooler” the next day were almost as entertaining as the show itself.
With House of Cards that does not exist, when mentioning the show in company invariably there is someone who is not at the same stage as you and the conversation is curtailed by the fear of spoilers!
Likewise with social media and traditional media, as many US shows use twitter to promote episodes and to evoke debate after they have aired, with the mass release of an entire series the impact is greater in the short term but is not sustainable over a longer period of time.
This seems to be also be the view at Netflix HQ as Lowe recently said “You watch it and it's done and now what. As opposed to the way they released Breaking Bad on AMC and you'd go into work ... and talk about what's going to happen next ... it would build the audience." Another Netflix original Orange is the New Black the US Women’s prison drama is set for a mass release on June 6th of this year and this viewer has already block booked the couch for the weekend, but will this be the end
of the binge watching trend as Netflix look to consolidate their business and change the way we watch TV?
If you’re looking for a new device on which to watch Netflix, why not stop in to CeX on Level 3, The Square. CeX buy, sell and exchange a range of technology and entertainment products including mobile phones, video games, DVDs and Blu-ray movies, computers, digital electronics, TVs, monitors and music CDs at very competitive prices.

TITANFALL

By Colm O’Muirí
Titanfall is an upcoming first person shooter which will be available exclusively on the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One. Titanfall is the first game from Respawn Entertainment which was founded by two of the creators from the Call of Duty franchise.
The game is multiplayer only and does not feature a single player campaign. Another interesting aspect of the game is that the multiplayer campaign is not co-operative but adversarial and pits the gamers against each other.
Titanfall gives you the opportunity to be on the ground as a free running pilot or you can also control one of the agile mech-style walkers know as

The Atlas is a great all round Titan with state of the art weapons and very good protection and mobility. The Ogre is referred to as a battle tank but in Titan form, the Ogre places heavy emphasis on its armor and offensive capabilities. The Stryder is known for its speed and agility and is the fastest of all the Titans.
The Frontier has two factions doing battle, Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation (IMC) and the Militia. Users choose which side they are on, whether it is the Militia who are the civilian military of the frontier, or the IMC, the corporate conglomerates who have come to remove all they can from the Frontier for their own greed.
Titanfall is one of the most anticipated games for Xbox one and looks to be a definite Game of the Year candidate, having picked up over 60 awards at E3 following its reveal, including Best of Show.
The game features 15 maps in which you can do battle with 33 weapons to choose from. The game is set in the deepest reaches of Titanfall is released on March explored space which 13th for Xbox One and March is known as the Frontier. 28th for Xbox 360.
This is the fourth game in the franchise. The game is set in a dark fantasy world in which players control the master thief Garrett. He has been away from his hometown of the City, for a very long time and he returns to find it being ruled

over by a tyrant called The Baron. The game is choice driven and gives users a number of different paths and approaches to choose from. As you would expect from the title Thief is a stealth game and therefore you need to wait until the right moment to make your
move on enemies, as opposed to trying to overpower them. Stealth is one of the best features of the game, with you being able to lure guards into different areas and your best bet is to stay in the shadows to avoid detection. Some of the weapons which Garret has is a bow and arrow, a blackjack which is used to knock guards out and a claw which allows Garrett to reach higher ground.
Thief is available to buy now and is available on both the Sony and Microsoft consoles as well as PC. The graphics of this game are at its best on the PC version as it allows 60 frames per second as opposed to the 30 available on the next-gen consoles. Thief will be available on Xbox 360, Xbox one PS3 and PS4.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF By Rachel Lynch
2014 will see Volkswagen Golf, as well as the Volkswagen GTI making their final appearance before the launch of an all new and totally redesigned 2015 VW Golf.
This model may be in its final year of production, but it's still one of the most rewarding compact cars on the market. There are a number of options available with the Golf to suit all budgets and more importantly all needs. The standard 5 door Golf Trendline ranges in price from €21,645.00 to €26,185.00. The engine is available in 1.2 petrol and 1.6 diesel.
The design of the car instantly marks it as a Golf, with styling cues that deliberately evolve in a recognizable progression. With hatchbacks now becoming far
more in demand than ever before the Golf is well positioned as it's been a hatchback for 40 years now.
The interior of the Golf highlights exactly why they really do “do it best”. My first initial thought when I took a seat inside the new model was that every other car manufacturer was in serious trouble and that’s purely because Volkswagen have raised the quality level so high. It’s not only the stylish surroundings that make it classier than every other model in its class, it also puts to shame many in the class above.
The leather steering wheel, gearshift and handbrake lever are another touch of added sophistication. It’s very well equipped, with all models fitted with a centre colour touch screen, which is in another class of its own too. It also includes Bluetooth and iPod connectivity. Another
fantastic plus to the Golf is the enormous boot. The back seats drop down with ease leaving even more space in the back if needed.
Although it’s a sporty young model, Volkswagen’s Golf has been appealing to more and more families over the years with their practicality and affordable running costs. Drop down to Frank Keane Volkswagen on the Long Mile Road for a test drive today and for information on a finance plan that may suit you.

EUGENE SLEDGE With the Old Breed By Karen Hammond
It was only after watching The Pacific box set that I really developed an interest in the Pacific war.
I vividly remember in secondary school studying history, uncovering the horrors and atrocities that occurred during World War 2. However I was unaware that a three year war in the Pacific had also occurred.
With the Old Breed is a memoir written by Pacific war veteran, Eugene Sledge. Not only does it cover the bloody battles, we get to meet Sledge before his entering the war, upon his enrollment into the marine corps to his intense combat training that subsequently followed. Through Sledge’s eyes we witness what he was forced to endure and all that he witnessed. The reader can mentally experience every horrific moment up until Japan’s surrender in September 1945. The novel opens with Eugene Sledge enrolling in the US Marines and he is sent to Georgia Tech to begin training.
However the story truly begins when Sledge is eventually assigned to K (King) Company and must fight against the vicious Japanese. This novel is a detailed account of his experience beginning in boot camp to the two wars that he fought as a member of the 1st Marine Division in Peleliu and Okinawa, fighting against vicious rival troops the novel reveals the brutality of war. There is one moment in the novel, in particular that despite my best efforts, I just can’t shake, the sickening moment when Sledge sees his fellow comrades prying Japanese soldiers gold teeth out with their knives, and keeping them, among other Japanese possessions as souvenirs. This memoir bled real emotion. It gives the reader an opportunity to use their imagination, to visualize yourself in mud filled trenches alongside Sledge.
You have to read his novel to truly see the pain that he endured and his resilience to survive another day, agony most of us could never even begin to fathom.
With the Old Breed is an outstanding novel, definitely one of the best war memoirs out there, but be warned it’s not suited to the easily shocked or weak hearted individual. It’s extremely honest, capturing, saddening, and truly addictive. Once I started the book, I found it almost impossible to put down, I hung on every word. It proved to be tedious at times but once I reached the final page I felt accomplished.
About The Author
Eugene Sledge, nicknamed “Sledgehammer” by his fellow comrades, was born in Mobile Alabama, US in 1923. Sledge came from a well educated family, his father Edward was a physician and his mother was the Dean of Women at Huntington College in Montgomery. Sledge’s ancestors on his mother’s side served during the Civil War so Sledge developed an interest in that conflict.
Sledge was enrolled in the Marion Military Institute but instead chose to volunteer for the U.S. Marine Corps in December 1942. He was placed in the V-12 officer training program and was sent to Georgia Tech where he "flunked out" so they would be allowed to serve their time as enlistees and not "miss the war". During his service, Sledge kept notes of what happened in his pocket sized New Testament. When the war ended, he took these notes and compiled them into his memoir. After the war, Sledge attended the Alabama Polytechnic Institute and received a Bachelor of Science degree in the summer of 1949.In 1955 he graduated from university with a Master of Science degree in botany. In the summer of 1962, Sledge was appointed Assistant Professor of Biology at Alabama College. He retired in 1990. Eugene Sledge died after a long battle with stomach cancer in 2001. He was survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Jeanne, and their two sons, John and Henry.

Dublin to overtake London as tech Mecca
Dublin is hot on the heels of London for the title of Europe's 'Silicon Valley', according to a new report launched by Colliers International, global real estate advisors. As the economy rebounds, Dublin is set to consolidate its top three position in Europe through exposure to large tech players and the data centre industry, and Ireland is now the fastest growing country in Europe for data centre operators, it concludes. The IT sector represented 30% of office take up in 2013 and US tech giants alone invested over $130 billion into Ireland between 2008 and 2012, almost as much as they invested in all of developing Asia.
In London, over 46% of 2013 leases in the West End were attributed to tech and media companies - and 'Tech City' continues establish its dominance. However, if London is going to remain at the top, landlords and developers have been urged to urgently address the shortage of central, quality stock and increase provision of flexible and innovative space.
Paul Finucane, Director of Offices at Colliers International said: Ireland's favourable tax system, with a corporation tax set at 12.5pc, has also undoubtedly reinforced the appeal of the city as an ideal business location. Over time, Dublin has managed to establish itself as a location for multinationals, so the infrastructure is in place for new companies to base themselves here." Modern office buildings on Dublin's "Silicon Dock", house a large concentration of Dublin's media and tech operators.

Women’s Sports Journal
A new website devoted to women's sports was recently launched by two Dublin women. Women’s Sports Journal (WSJ) is the brainchild of Editor Lisa Haskins from Clondalkin and Assistant Editor Kelly McGill from Inchicore and their new site is dedicated to delivering top news stories, fixtures and features from the world of female sports.
The aim is for WSJ to increase readership within women’s sports, making it unique among most sporting websites available online.
Editor and creator Lisa Haskins thinks it's time Irish sports women were recognised for their achievements. “I would like to see 2014 be the year when our female athletes get the recognition they deserve and get more support in our country.
“In a time of recession I think it only makes sense to focus on the good things our country has to offer. Women such as Katie Taylor need more media coverage here and I hope our website will become a platform for them and set out some changes for female athletes.”
Supporting WSJ is Tallaght native and former Miss Bikini Ireland, Lisa Hogan, who is also a professional ballroom dancer. Lisa will be updating the site weekly with a diary based on the life of an athlete.

4 New Pitches For Jobstown Park
Mayor Dermot Looney turned the first sod on the site of four artificial floodlit grass pitches in Jobstown Park at the start of February.
Funding for the construction of four artificial floodlit grass pitches in Jobstown Park was received from the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport. South Dublin County Council has now entered into a contract with Crawford Contracts Group Ltd for the construction phase. The proposed facility will be located adjacent to the Tallaght Leisure Centre. Construction works are due to commence shortly. The expected completion date for this project is mid May 2014.
Mayor Dermot Looney said “I am delighted to turn the sod on this project, I believe that the good sports facilities are a great investment in the future.
“This is the first step in the provision of a wonderful facility for the young people in Tallaght. I can see these pitches being full of enthusiastic young players and who knows, we will hopefully find the next Robbie Keane, Keith Fahey or Richard Dunne."

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD MATTERS, NOT IN THE WAY THAT FOOD MATTERS, BUT AS POETRY DOES TO SOME PEOPLE, AND ALCOHOL DOES TO OTHERS: IT ENGAGES THE PERSONALITY” Arthur Hopcraft, The Football Man.

I'm sure most Hoops identify with Hopcraft’s quote. What happens on the field does matter, it matters a hell of a lot.

will provide the steel in a new look Rovers defence.
Preseason has gone well and the recent 5-1 drubbing of Glentoran in the Setanta Cup provided a good run out for a lot of the new players.
Trevor Croly has the benefit of having a season under his belt now and this experience should stand him in good stead for the challenges that lie ahead.
The new venture with the First Division team will be a great opportunity to develop young players from the youth academy for the first team and should make for a very interesting season in the second tier. If Rovers are to improve on the last two seasons it's vital they make a good start and the first two fixtures, both at home against Derry and Sligo, will give a good indication of what's in store for the rest of the season.
Every Rovers fan understands how important the crowd in the stands is to the team and this season, as always, the 12th man has a huge part to play. The League of Ireland IS Irish football and we all hope this season is an unforgettable one for Shamrock Rovers and everyone who loves this great club.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank both Bobby Best and George Kelly for the wealth of Rovers images they have supplied to us over the past 3 years. We look forward to seeing their brilliant pictures documenting the 2014 season, let’s hope its a successful one.
We would also like to thank Shamrock Rovers for their cooperation and granting us access to both players and backroom staff.
Derry City will arrive in Tallaght for the big kick off with Roddy Collins at the helm with their own ambitions to lay down a marker. They've gone about their business well in the winter signing Danny Ventre from Sligo and Cliff Byrne from Oldham.
Sligo proved to be tough opponents last season with Rovers failing to beat them in the three league games. The Northwesterners slightly underachieved last year and with the evergreen Joe N'do still marshalling the midfield plus the addition of John Russell, it's probably safe to assume they will once again be challenging for the title come the end of the season.
All of us here at InTallaght Magazine would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the family of the late Paddy Delahunty. He will be sadly missed, and never forgotten, by all his many friends at Shamrock Rovers. May he rest in peace.

Pre season is a very important time of the season, it gives players a good base of fitness that carries them throughout a busy season , with so many new players coming into the team it also gives players time to gel and get to know one another, both on and off the pitch. The team has been put through its paces by the staff and got through some tough work.
InRovers Sensible training sessions were put together by the staff and the lads seem to have enjoyed it , the team looks strong and sharp, this has shown in our pre season games! So with a base of good fitness and good results behind us the squad is positive about the season ahead and can't wait to get cracking on the league!

RUA RED
58
Hi everyone,
On 5 February 2009, RUA RED opened following a major capital development by South Dublin County Council.
Five years on we celebrate this occasion with an exciting year long programme of exhibitions, performances, talks, debates and other events.
RUA RED is not just about the venue, but all the other activities that take place in and around us and the people involved.
Ultimately though, it is you the faithful RUA RED visitors that have enabled us to bring the best artists we can to South Dublin and to maintain the standards that have seen us win three awards in our time including the overall Grand Prix Award (LAMA Awards).
Keep up to date via our website, social networking sites and the local press to see information on future presentations with some familiar names, some surprises, community events, special offers and the chance for you to tell us your stories and be involved. Thanks for your support and a great five years. Until next issue,
Karen Philips (director) and The RUA RED Team
Tenant Spotlight
Here at RUA RED we have a number of tenants that reside in the building, one of which is artist Jim Cathcart who is based in Studio 5 here in RUA RED.
Who are you/what are you all about?
I’m Jim Cathcart, a visual artist and sometimes tutor, arts coordinator, researcher and consultant. These roles have all been part of trying to work out what artists and arts should be all about these days. This is still an ongoing conundrum.
What are you working on right now?
I’ve been up to my elbows in ink making mono-prints and also working on some doodles for the next big projects.
How did you get into this line of work? What’s your background?
I attended Glasgow School of Art in my homeland and with some friends formed a socially and politically engaged artist collective. From there, in what seems now a logical almost inevitable move as art activists, we began to investigate and experiment with community
based arts. Recently I’ve been pursuing a renewed personal compulsion to make art.
You’re quite involved in community arts. How do you find this?
I’ve been involved in many different ways in community based arts. It has challenges, particularly in learning to work collaboratively but also rewards. It’s been great to see what different people will do when they decide to get their hands on art. If supported and sustained, it’s often more interesting and significant that what the artistic cognoscenti comes up with.
Where/who do you take influence from?
There are numerous artists whose work fascinates me but I’d be reticent to ascribe influence though as that might invite comparison, not great for the ego. In terms of ideas and motivation, at the moment I find myself being influenced by the way some musicians and song-writers deal with the world around them.
What is a normal day in your studio like?
The only constant is the radio. Otherwise it might be a day of
inking and cleaning slabs, a day of making doodles and sketches or going up and down the scaffold with brushes and paint.
Do you have any advice for budding/new artists?
There are so many approaches to art and ways to be an artist, as an individual and in community. Try and enjoy finding out about them and take some time to discover what feels right for you. And don’t forget to win the lotto.
Where can people view your work? Find out more about you?
For now the web presence is in the tenants pages of RUA RED’s website (www.ruared.ie/ jim_cathcart.html) but this will be changing. Individuals and groups are welcome to make arrangements for a studio visit.
Jim Cathcart’s exhibition Them that work the hardest… opened in Draiocht Arts Centre on Thursday February 13th based around Jim’s mobile mural project dealing with themes of work and unemployment. The exhibition runs until 19th April.

THE NOTHING MAN By Dáithí Mac Gabhann
“He” comes around at dark of night, when, all is still and the moon gives no light, a creaking window, or a banging door, are the first signs that “ He “is here. Then the curtains move ever so slightly, as he enters the room lightly. That flickering candle shows his height, (or maybe it’s just a trick of the light),
What was that sound near the door? The hairs on your neck rise with fear, “Who is there?”, you stammer with voice shaking as your knees start a deadly quaking.
But, no one gives an answer to you, To keep from screaming, is all you can do, with a quick swallow and a silent prayer, you rise to see what caused your fear, It’s the “Nothing Man”
Through the window as you pass by, You see a shape with the corner of your eye, Another glance and then he’s gone, you wonder are you still alone?

THE MAN ON THE ROAD By Susan Kelly
Is that the doorbell ringing away? (a heavy weapon won’t go astray) When you finally open the door, Whom do you see standing there? Yes, the “Nothing Man.”
Then, as you climb the stairs to sleep, a shadow causes your flesh to “creep”. Dare you risk running (and a fall)? Or will you stand and defend your all? From the “Nothing Man.”
Caught in a sudden burst of fear, You make a lunge at the shadow there, Ah, it was nothing…Man. (October 1983)
Dáithí has written over twenty short stories, and as many poems. He previously self published a mock history of Tallaght called "The Tallaght Chronicles", in a limited edition. He has just turned 69.
Feeling lost and lonely He stumbles along the road Trapped in an uncertain world He drifts aimlessly through life Weighed down by worries and anxieties His mind a mirror of confusion Begging from people to meet the day’s needs Sleeping on park benches when money is scarce His only possessions by his side Making light conversations with people To erase sadness from his mind Getting friendly feedback lightens the mood Tomorrow is another day Meeting it with memories of the past Thoughts evolving constantly Looking down the road Seeking peace, calm, serenity and a new direction.
ARE YOU AN ASPIRING AUTHOR OR POET?
If you’re interested in seeing your work published in InTallaght, simply submit your poem or short story (no longer than 400 words please!) to editor@intallaght.ie and you could see your creative writing in print in one of our future editions!
