Welcome
Welcome to Edition 50 of InTallaght
The end of March marked InTallaght Magazine's third birthday and we celebrated in fine style with a cheese and wine reception followed by some ball room dancing in a very exclusive city centre establishment. If only! The landmark date has been and gone and not a glass has been raised yet, we’ve been far too busy putting together this, our 50th edition. We're halfway to the ton already! All joking aside we are absolutely delighted to be three years in business and we want to thank all our readers and advertisers who have supported us since March 2011. It's been an exciting ride so far, fingers crossed here's to the next three years! In this issue we look back on the career of the unofficial high king of Ireland Brian O Driscoll. We were lucky enough to be in the Mansion House recently when he and Fr Peter McVerry were deservedly awarded the Freedom Of Dublin. The legacy both men have created in their lives is awe inspiring. As usual we also have all the regular features you know and expect from InTallaght Magazine. Until next time.

Dave Mason Took Part In Last Year’s Dodder Day In A Canoe!
Dodder Day Returns
Dodder Action, an umbrella group for all concerned citizens who want to roll up their sleeves to keep their river looking good, is organising another Dodder Day on April 12th as part of An Taisce's National Spring Clean. They aim to clean the whole river from Old Bawn to Ballsbridge and last year they got at least 200 people out. This year we they also did a walk of the whole river from source to sea on March 22nd and all
Since last year's Dodder Day, Tallaght has continued to clean on a regular basis and Firhouse fielded a huge team on the day. Awareness of the river is growing in the area, as is the determination to help the local Council and inspire then to greater things. Dodder Action is working towards partnering with the Council to devise systems for keeping the river clean and boosting its amenity value for the thousands who walk and cycle it every day, as well as their doggie friends. Exact locations and times are being finalised so keep in touch by accessing Dodder Action on Facebook, or

Men’s Shed Tallaght
For older men who find the thought of day centres and watching television unappealing, the Mens Sheds project helps them regain their feelings of purpose and their sense of identity which might have been lost after giving up work.
The Men's Shed movement originated in Australia and started in Ireland just over three years ago with the aim of fighting loneliness and social isolation in older men by giving them a platform to use their skills as part of a group project as opposed to an individual hobby. There are currently 191 sheds across the country, with an average of 5,000 members.
Most men have learned from our culture that they don’t talk about feelings and emotions. There has been little encouragement for men to take an interest in their own health and well-being. Unlike women, most men are reluctant to talk about their emotions and that means that they usually don’t ask for help. Probably because of this many men are less healthy than women, they drink more, take more risks and they suffer more from isolation, loneliness and depression.
Research into men’s sheds found that men aged 50 and over experienced many changes, from retirement and isolation to health changes, and the sheds provided an important environment and space for men going through many of those changes The Tallaght Men's Shed has been operating for the last
three years and InTallaght Magazine went to the local shed in Glenview Lodge to find out more about this rapidly expanding organization.
Marie Redmond, who is responsible for the running of the local shed, said it is a place where men can come and talk to each other in a relaxed environment. "Tallaght Men’s Shed is a community of local men who together share their experience, skills and knowledge with each other and the community for the betterment of the community and to help reduce isolation.
"Mens Sheds provide a venue for a programme of self-help, it is primary aimed at retired men whose interests may be similar in nature and who are willing to participate in activities that would be of benefit to themselves and
14
others in the community. Interests vary and may include any or all of the following: Woodworking, Gardening, Socializing, Cultural, Educational, Outings, Day Trips or Arts and Crafts or befriending or just have a chat and a cuppa. "Anybody interested is welcome to come along to any of our meetings and have a chat and a cuppa and no commitment is required," she said.
Billy Fitzsimons is the chairman of the local shed and he is in no doubt as to the important role it plays in the lives of some of its members. "Without this shed most of us would probably be dead. It is absolutely beneficial because it gives us a reason to get up in the morning, gives us something to do and somewhere to be. "It is more or less a social club where men are able to gather together, it keeps us occupied and it keeps us healthy.
It's much better to be here doing something constructive than be stuck at home watching daytime TV. “
“”
The motto of the Men’s Shed movement is "Men don't talk face to face, they talk shoulder to shoulder" and that is very true. Everybody is welcome so if you think this would be something that you would be interested please get in touch or come down to the shed. To find out more please contact Marie Redmond 085 165 3983 or

Brian O’Driscoll
16
By Padraig Conlon
The outpouring of affection for Brian O’Driscoll has been unbelievable in the last few weeks.
I don't think any other Irish sportsperson in my lifetime has been so well thought of, not just by fans of rugby even people how have no interest in the game recognise the brilliance of a man who is probably our greatest ever player. To win the championship by beating France away was a fitting way to finish a wonderful 15 year international career. The journey he’s travelled since his schooldays to become one of the finest outside centers to ever play the game has been a joy to watch. All of us who have seen him play can feel lucky to have witnessed his genius. When the final whistle blew in Paris Brian O’Driscoll ended his career as the highest capped player of all time with 141 appearances for his country.
But that is only the start of it. He is also the highest try scorer of all time in Irish rugby with 46 tries, the eighth highest try scorer in rugby union history, and the highest scoring centre of all time.
His rugby pedigree was excellent from the word go; his father Frank and two of his uncles had all represented Ireland. Initially though, O’Driscoll showed more of an interest in GAA and soccer with Manchester United’s Mark Hughes an early hero. All this would change when we went to noted rugby school Blackrock College.
The first time I ever saw Brian O‘Driscoll play was a Leinster Schools Senior Cup semi final in 1997. He was playing out half for Blackrock as they took on Clongowes in Landsdowne Road. All I remember about him from that day was that he was tiny and he missed a few easy drop goals as Rock were beaten. If someone had said at the time that he would go on to be our greatest ever rugby player I would’ve thought, no chance.
internationals Donncha O’Callaghan and Paddy Wallace. O’Driscoll lined out at number 12 as Ireland beat the hosts 18-0 in the final.
His performances had been noticed by senior manager Warren Gatland and his full international debut came away against Australia in June 1999. He had been voted man of the match by his team mates in the previous two warm up matches but this was a different type of contest When he turned pro in 1998 the altogether. Even though the professional era was just starting visitors took a severe 46-10 and he had an outstanding beating in Brisbane the 20 year introduction to life as a full time old O’Driscoll stood out as one of rugby player when he was part of the best players on the pitch. After the Ireland Under 19’s who won the game Wallabies captain the World Cup in France. Coached George Gregan presented the by Declan Kidney this team also young debutant with the jersey of contained future full his direct opponent in the match.
In his debut Six Nations season in 2000 he had shown great form leading up to that momentous March day in Paris. In the previous games he scored the first of his record breaking Six Nations tries as Ireland racked up their first win against the Scots in 12 years and followed this up with another try in a victory over Italy at Lansdowne Road. But nobody could have forseen what would happen next when he scored three tries as Ireland beat France for the first time since 1972. He was a phenomenon on the day, running angles through the French that took the breath away. Keith Wood is on record as saying he thinks it was the greatest performance ever by an Irish player. The then 21 year old was suddenly propelled into the rugby stratosphere.
A first Celtic League with Leinster would arrive in 2001 but it would be the last thing they would win for a while. Munster were top dogs in Ireland as they showed when then regulary humbled their inter provincial arch rivals. For O’Driscoll it must have been tough to watch as the Munster lads got to Heineken Cup finals, and then started winning them.
A Lions call up came in 2001 and O Driscoll was going back to Australia where it had all began with Ireland. He shone throughout the tour and scored an incredible try as the tourists won the first test. Many have said this was the match that made the Southern Hemisphere realise what an outstanding talent the Dubliner was. Even though the Lions would eventually lose the series he had really arrived on the world stage. In his first World Cup

in 2003 he was Irelands outstanding player once again capping a great performance against the hosts Australia with another memorable try.
The Irish captaincy would inevitably come in 2004 and along with it Ireland’s first Triple Crown since 1985. There was a real feeling in the country that with O’Driscoll leading us we had a great chance of becoming a super power. Another two Triple Crowns in 06 and 07 only backed up the belief that we would be a formidable force in the 2007 World Cup in France. In both seasons O Driscoll was also named player of the tournament.
It was not to be however as an overtrained Irish side completely underperformed at the tournament. One shambolic performance led to another as Ireland struggled to beat Namibia, then Georgia. France thrashed them in Paris before Argentina put them out of the tournament and out of their misery. O’Driscoll had been one of the very few Irish players to perform to an acceptable level.
Another Celtic League was won in 2008 and Leinster turned their attention to finally winning their first Heineken Cup. Previous attempts had ended badly but this time there was a steeliness to the Province that had been labelled the “Ladyboys” by one unimpressed ex player turned journalist. The semi final of 2009 pitted them against the
InTallaghtMaster50.qxp_Layout 1 27/03/2014 05:40 Page 19
19
old foe from Munster and this time Leinster excelled in a very impressive victory at Croke Park.
At last they were in a Heineken Cup Final where they would meet formidable opposition in the shape of Leicester Tigers. In a nail biter of a contest in Murrayfield Drico opened the scoring with a drop goal as his side went on to win 16-13. Two more European Cups would follow in 2011 and 2012 as Leinster dominated the competition. The same year as the first Heineken Cup would also be the greatest for Ireland in 61 years as the Grand Slam was finally won. In typical Irish fashion it all came down to a last second missed penalty from Wales. After so much international heartbreak O’Driscoll now had something he could look back on with immense pride.
One source of distress during his career was his experiences playing with the Lions. A veteran of four tours (01, 05, 09 and 12), three of them unsuccessful, he had the honor of being captain in 2005 against the All Blacks before a spear tackle early in the first test put an end to his tour. His omission for the final test last summer in Australia caused outrage in Ireland but at least he had the silver lining of being part of the first Lions team to win a series since 1997.
Fired by that injustice he joined up with his Ireland teammates for what would be his final Six Nations tournament. Victories over everyone bar England gave us our first championship since 2009 and meant he could walk
away with his head held high, a champion once again. A wonderful ambassador for his country both on and off the pitch, his fundraising efforts for the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Temple Street Children’s Hospital are legendary. His testimonial was held last November and the entire proceeds from the event were donated to both causes. It’s going to be strange next season without our iconic talisman. Whatever the future holds for this much loved son of Dublin and Ireland he has left behind a legacy that will never be bettered. InTallaght Magazine was present in the Mansion House as our greatest ever rugby player received the Freedom of Dublin.
How do you feel about getting this award?
Obviously it’s an incredible honour to win the Freedom of Your home city. I’m thrilled to have my name associated with some of the truly great names of 76 people. I think what’s going to make my day all the more special is getting to share the day with Fr Peter McVerry, who is a very special individual and leader. I think he inspires everyone with the work he does.
What did you think when you found out? The Lord Mayor contacted me and the furthest thing from my mind was actually what he was
Brian O’Driscoll
going to speak to me about. I suppose I’ve always looked on the freedom of the city as the ultimate honour an individual can receive from the city. I look at that list of people and a rugby player doesn’t really seem to fit in with Mother Teresa or JFK! But I’m absolutely thrilled to be held in that company and I see it as one of the greatest honours that has been bestowed on me.
Because I play in a team sport, any accolade you get you essentially should only own a 15th of it! Or in many cases now a 23rd of it! Because without the players, the squad members, the coaching staff you’re absolutely nothing. From that point of view I always do share every individual accolade I receive with those that I currently play with and those I’ve played with in the past. I’m sure my family, similar to myself, feel great pride at being awarded this by my home city. As regards free parking, no I don’t get it! I think the only person who gets free parking in this city is my team mate Cian Healy… only because he’s got a monster truck and no one can clamp him!
Are you aware of the huge outpouring of goodwill from the whole nation towards you?
I think it’s hard not to be aware these days with social media essentially, its probably responsible for news making it’s way onto your lap with immediate effect. I was incredibly touched by the tribute from all of the children in Temple Street.
As someone said it would bring a tear to a glass eye. If you showed no emotion through out watching that video there would be something seriously wrong with you. I think every emotion from laughter to hilarity to sadness to joy. It had everything and I think there’s been some very very kind things said over the course of the last couple of weeks and I feel honoured by all of them.
How does it feel to be the youngest recipient?
I don’t know if I actually am the youngest, it was mentioned earlier on but I'm not sure. I’m in the hunt anyway!
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
I’m not done with rugby yet, I’ve a big couple of months ahead. When I eventually get to play out the season the plan is to try and win some more silverware with Leinster. Then I’m going to take a break. I’m going to take three or four months off and get used to not being a rugby player and be a Dad and be a husband. Just enjoying my time away from being part of a team unit. As much as I have loved every second of that, there’s limitations put on what you can and cannot do so I’m looking forward to being my own person for a while. And no doubt after that three or four months I’ll absolutely crave being back in a team environment but we’ll have to wait and see.

Finally with your wife Amy being an actress there is a chance you may have to move abroad. Is leaving Ireland something you’ve thought of? Yes we have, absolutely discussed it. If that scenario happens to occur well I’ll be only too happy to be brought along for the ride. I’ve been very lucky that I’ve had a really good run at what I’ve done for 15 years and I’m delighted that I’m able to call an end to this career on my terms.
But I’m absolutely ready to play the supporting role in whatever the next phase of life might be. I think there’s great adventure to be had lying ahead of us. If the potential to move is there, why not?

Raglans

INTERVIEW
know what I wanted to be doing, I liked writing and singing songs. Rhos was in a band that were playing that year, I saw him play and I thought he was brilliant and looked amazing. I met him in the campsite that night and we got on well so I asked him did he want to do something in the future but he just thought it was festival bullshit and said "No man I'm alright!" He's pretty honest like that!
By Padraig Conlon
Raglans are a four piece Dublin band that were formed in a festival tent four years ago. Since then they've carved out an impressive reputation for themselves with their original sound which consists of a mix of rock, indie, pop and folk. Last week they released their debut self titled album and are about to embark on a tour.
We met up with lead singer Stephen Kelly and Tallaght man and guitarist Sean O Brien to chat about the story behind the band, quitting their head wrecking jobs and putting everything into their music careers.
First things first lads, tell us all about your debut album?
Stephen: It's self titled, we'd
been trying to think of a name for ages and while we were recording it we were looking through magazines looking for something and Sean said why don't we just self title it and put a picture of us on the cover. Here's the band, here's the tunes, keep it simple. It's been the culmination of a few years work. Sean only joined just over a year ago so we feel like a brand new band because he's brought a completely new element to what we had already, we all grew better. I'm really happy with the album as it's a good representation of us live. We recorded it in a west London studio called Long Island Studios
with a brilliant producer called Jay Reynolds. We just whacked it out in about 13 days, Jay was under the impression we were going to need much longer, I think he was blown away by how quickly we did it.
lads then Sean came along with 11 songs but all songs are welcome, a lot of it just happens naturally. We're excited now with the release of the album because we've wanted to have something real, it feels like the start. You're nothing till you have something Sean: Recording it was fun, it was and we have something now to nice going through each song and stand behind and leave behind trying it one way then going back which is cool. Hopefully it'll start to do it another way. The album is from here. a mixture of lots of things; indie, pop, a bit of rock. Because we use Sean: The songs aren't really a mandolin some people say folk written in a genre, we just dress it as well. Like Stephen said I think up. We've all got different tastes it's a good representation of what but a similar vision. we're like live, very energetic with not too many lulls. How did the band
Who writes the songs?
Stephen: A lot of the songs I'd written before I'd even met the

I sent him some demos a few weeks later and he came back and said yes! He brought in Conn and when Sean joined last year he made the band what it is now.
Is music something you both always wanted to do as a career?
Stephen: I didn't really consider
it as an option when I was a kid because I didn't think I was any good and my Mum used to say I'd put the crows out of business! I tell her that now and she does feel bad! It's only in the last six months that I really feel like music is what I do, even though we still have a long way to go.
Sean: From when I was 12 it's all
I've wanted to do. It's sort of a weird addiction to it. I thought I might grow out of it but no! I've had some horrible jobs in my life, I couldn't do 9-5, I appreciate how lucky we are to get to do this.
Stephen: I worked in Avoca
Handweavers serving salad bowls to women who know how they want their salad bowls! A woman went mad once when I gave her the wrong vinegar. That was end days territory for me. I actually walked out of that job, real rock and roll. They were talking down to me so I just got in my car and drove off. Good Vibrations by The

Beach Boys came on the radio, it was a sign!
Sean: The last job I had was in a factory and I did the same. My role was putting things away/trying to look busy and I just thought to myself I can't do this anymore so I walked out.
If you had said to my 14 year old self that ten years from now you'll be living beside the Arsenal ground, in a band, with a newly released album, I'd probably have had a heart attack and died!
What's the story behind the band name Raglans? Stephen: On Raglan Road is my

at Bruce Springsteen over there! You just destroyed my Avoca Handweavers story man!
Do all the band live in Dublin?
Stephen: The other three do, I
live in London with my girlfriend, in Finsbury Park next to the Arsenal stadium, which is great because I'm an Arsenal fan so I get to go see them play regularly.
growing up, still is actually. Also it looks good when written on paper. People sometimes call us "The" Raglans which is annoying! We're just Raglans, no "the" included!
Looking back what would you describe as a major turning point for the band? Stephen: A few years ago we
won a competition to go and record with legend producer and Morrissey collaborator Boz Boorer in Portugal. That's what really turned it from a hobby to something bigger. It was a great
experience to work with someone who is top of the tree. We learned so much from him and he's the first eccentric person I ever met, he really was mental! He's a good dude and we still meet people who tell us "Oh Boz put me on to you guys."
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Sean: The Electric Picnic last year
definitely. We were playing at lunchtime on the Saturday and when we were setting up it was empty, there was nobody there. A few songs into it it started filling up and by the end it was packed.
Stephen: Yeah that was great.
Raglans
and has the area influenced your music? Sean: I'm from Firhouse, near
Kiltipper. Your surroundings are always going to influence you. I don't think it's a conscious thing but you're going to draw on where you're from when you're writing.
Stephen: The band Sean was in before us, Trapdoor, were our favorite band in the country and their EP LaTaTown, which is amazing, is all about Tallaght. It's a brilliant record.
Finally lads what is the plan for the rest of the year?
Stephen: We have the Irish tour
When they booked us I don't think coming up at the end of this they expected that. It was a good month/start of April then we'll be feeling, it was great to get to play touring for the rest of the year. at a big festival.

CAPTAIN AMERICA THE WINTER SOLDIER By Rachel Lynch
RIO 2
By Rachel Lynch
This April we see the return of family favourite Rio 2.
It is the sequel to 2011’s Rio and the studio's first film to have a sequel outside of their existing Ice Age franchise. The title refers to the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, where the film is set. Rio 2 sees Blu, Jewel and their three fully grown children named Carla, Bia, and Tiago enjoying life in the rare-bird reserve in Rio de Janeiro. As we know from the first installment Blu still has a few domesticated quirks from his old life, such as his insistence on making pancakes for breakfast, but for the most part, the family lives a very idyllic happy life. All of this goes out the window when Jewel discovers that her long lost father and old clan are still alive, living deep within the Amazon rainforest. Their habitat is under attack and Jewel must help save her former home and family. Although Jewel (voiced by Anne Hathaway) loves the city she decides her children need to
learn to live like real birds, and insists the family venture into the Amazon, with the intention of finding her father.
After careful consideration Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) and his family take flight for the Amazon. They enjoy many adventures along the way and seem to be fitting in well with their new surroundings although Blu finds it tough to adjust to this new way of living.
As Blu tries to fit in with his new neighbours, he grows concerned that his family will leave him once they've experienced life in the wild. Can he adapt to life in the Amazon?
Tracy Morgan, Jamie Foxx, will.i.am, George Lopez, and Leslie Mann also reprise their roles in this sequel.
RELEASE DATE: APRIL 4
With the new Spider Man film set to be released in the same month as Captain America it really is a battle of the superheros.
Captain America, The Winter Soldier will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers left off. The new movie has been generating lots of positive feedback over the past few weeks in particular, with recently-unveiled footage from the sequel and a trailer that would draw in almost anyone to the superhero world. After the events in New York
with The Avengers, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier finds Steve Rogers (Captain America), living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the everwidening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy The Winter Soldier.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 By Rachel Lynch
A sequel to the 2012 reboot of the Spidey franchise. There has been a whole lot of hype surrounding this movie due to be released in just over a month’s time. Concern has been raised over just how many villains appear to be populating the movie.
You can’t really blame fans of the franchise when they hear the likes of Jamie Foxx playing Electro, Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn, Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn (and alter ego), and further hints at Doctor Octopus and Vulture. Just how do you fit that lot in?
Although director Marc Webb has been happy to comment on the role of the villains within this new movie he has kept everything else pretty much locked down. This just adds to the excitement as nobody really knows what to expect.
What we do know is Andrew Garfield is returning to the role of Peter Parker/Spiderman. Peter is finding it hard to adjust with balancing his life as a high school student, and his responsibilities as SpiderMan. When Peter begins to investigate more about his father's past, thanks to the help of his friend Harry Osborn, he begins to realize that the
new threats of Electro and the Rhino all have one thing in common: OsCorp. The trailer is action packed and it does look as though the production of the film has improved greatly from two years ago. It certainly looks promising as fans have been promised another two movies to follow in the franchise. Whether they can continue with success for another two movies will depend hugely on the reception of this movie. Will fans accept the added number of villains forecasted to appear or will it just be a step too far?

MORISSEY & MARSHALL And So It Began... By Padraig Conlon
OUTZANE Hot
38
By Padraig Conlon
OutZane AKA Glen Boyne is a local rap artist originally from Fettercairn. Hot is the latest single to be taken from his recently released 18 track album Was It Something I Said?
Local folk rock duo Morrissey and Marshall have just released their much anticipated debut album And So It Began.
Recorded in London with legendary producer John Reynolds the album is an outstanding mix of vocal harmonies accompanied by acoustic guitar and uplifting lyrics. Fans who've been with the band from day one will be delighted the lads have stayed true to their folk rock roots and on this record will find everything about the band they've come to know and love. In a world awash with singer/songwriters Greg and Darren have created a sound that makes them stand out from their peers.
Taking their inspiration from bands like The Everley Brothers, The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel (to name but a few) the album opens in fine style with title track And So It Begins, a rousing bluesy number that deals with the break down of a relationship.
Old Tree and In Need Of Guidance take the listener on a more poppy direction while last summer’s single I've Got A Plan is a wonderfully upbeat, happy
Glen is a well established rapper at this stage having performed over 500 shows as a solo artist and also as part of a nine piece band called ‘The Elementz.’ He has toured and performed in over 450 schools, libraries and community centres nationwide running Rap writing workshops.
tune that deals with the importance of positivity and feeling good about yourself. Mantra, High and Low and We Are One are the other standout tracks, with the latter song closing the album with the wonderful lyrics "We are one and it's our time to shine, so close your eyes and lets’ go wandering away."
The level of maturity in their songwriting is very impressive and covers a broad range of subjects, in stark contrast to a lot of singer songwriters who tend to focus on romantic themes. Having interviewed the lads last year, and discussed this with them, I know they are very interested in the importance of lyrics and like to write songs with a powerful message that may help people.
And So It Began is a brilliant album that captures exactly what Morrissey and Marshall are all about and in my opinion will be the vehichle that propels them to the next level. There is something here for everyone; Indie, Folk, Blues, Rock and Pop are fused to create a record unlike anything else out there at the moment. Going on the evidence of this album I look forward to hearing more from these two highly creative, original, musicians.
Hot is a banging rap tune delivered with Glen's trademark Dublin twang without all the phony posturing of a lot of modern American Hip Hop. Irish Hip Hop has been growing steadily in the last decade although there is still a certain amount of snobbery against it from followers of other musical genres, and the media, in this country.
I think we’d be better off promoting all Irish music. Whether a musical genre is indigenous or not shouldn't make any difference. The integrity of artists like Glen is not in question and his rhyming skills deserve to be recognized. Irish music as a whole would benefit greatly from more homegrown support.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 By Colm O’Muirí
Samsung are releasing their latest smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S5 in the coming weeks and after its launch in The Square in March we here at InTallaght decided to take a closer look at it.
The S5 follows on from the hugely popular S4 which is reported to have garnered over 20 million users in its first two months when it went on sale in April 2013. The new S5 will have a 5.1 inch full HD screen and it is also super AMOLED, this is a display technology that has a capacitive touchscreen layer directly into the display as opposed to overlaying it on top of the display. Basically it is a thinner design that uses less power and that reflects less light which means that it will work better outdoors.
The processor in the new S5 is a major upgrade over the S4 with a 2.5 Hz Quad core compressor, compared with the 1.9GHz chip in the S4. The S5 will also run Android 4.4.2 Kitkat.
The battery for this phone is significantly better and according to Samsung it offers 12 hours of video playback. The camera is also improved over the S4 with the S5 boasting a 16mp rear
facing camera which means it will have an improved image, and a speedy auto focus which is the quickest in any smartphone.
Samsung have said that the camera will focus the image in less than a third of a second. The Samsung Galaxy S5 has many new features some of which are that it will have an all new finger scanner. Samsung have also installed a private mode with this feature which means that only you can view it and that you will also be able to make secure payments with the new finger scanner technology. There is a kid’s mode which while it protects your child it also in turns protects you while they are using it. One of the cooler new features to this phone
is the Ultra Power Saving Mode, this mode will automatically turn your screen to black and white, will turn of all features except for your calls and texts when you are almost out of battery. It is expected than when your phone is at 10% battery power that in this mode it can last up to 24 hours. This is a feature which will definitely come in handy during a day trip, and will also get rid of the worry of your phone dying on a nightout.
The S5 is also designed to work with Samsung’s three new smartwatches the Gear 2, the Gear 2 Neo and the Gear fit. The S5 is expected to be released on Friday April 25 in Ireland and looks set to be another major winner for Samsung.

Child of Light is a platform role-playing game, RPG, developed by Ubisoft which will be available on PlayStation 3 and 4 as well as Xbox 360, Xbox One and Wii U. The game follows Aurora, a girl from 1895 Austria who while asleep because of a physical ailment is transported to the mythical world of Lemuria. Lemuria has had its sun, moon and stars stolen by the mysterious Dark Queen.

Aurora, in her quest to return home, is also tasked with retrieving the sun, the moon and the stars from the Dark Queen. She is not alone in her adventure and is also helped along the way by the firefly Igniculus, who is a playable character, and other allies including Finn in her quest.
Child of Light is inspired by fairy tales and features some eccentric creatures in the game. Some of these creatures are Spirits of the Forest, talking mice, wicked witches and also evil sea serpents. During her quest Aurora will also have to take on the minions of Lemuria’s Dark

ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH By Rachel Lynch
Every now and again we see a car that just jumps out at us. A car we would all aspire to own. As expected and promised the 2014 Aston Martin Vanquish exterior is ultra sleek and as eye catching as the previous 2012 model but with significant changes. Take the front of the car, you will notice if you are a fan of the Aston Martin design there is a completely different front lip. Aston did away with the gaping mouth look that the 2012 DBS had and replaced it with a lower lip and a small rectangular mouth that will likely act as a front-lip spoiler.
The new Vanquish will feature larger air ducts, giving the front end a sportier, racing appearance. The headlight assemblies appear to be very similar to the 2012 model year, but the new Vanquish’s headlights look to come to a harder point on the front, giving it a meaner look and of course they feature LED lights . The back of the car is where the designers really changed it up and for the most part completely
redesigned the typical Aston Martin look. There is a significantly larger spoiler than the one found in the previous model and the two exhausts have become even more of a feature than ever before. The rear end is the most redesigned part of the new Vanquish. The first notable difference is a significantly larger and more aggressive spoiler than the one found on the current model.
The inside of the model can only be summed up in one word, “heaven”. I have never seen anything like it before and it somewhat explains the heavy price attached to this car.
The new Vanquish will be trimmed in Fine Luxmil and semianiline leather and Alcantara, all hand stitched.

The engine size is 6.0L so filling this model up won’t be cheap but I suppose if you can afford a car that is priced at just over €200,000 well then the cost of petrol isn’t going to affect you in the slightest.
When weighing up the options of competitors the only one close was the new upcoming Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, and although I say it comes close, that in itself will set you back another extra couple of thousand.

Book
IF EVER YOU GO, A map of Dublin in Poetry and Song Reviewed By Eileen Casey
This substantial volume of poetry (over 350 pages) provides a ground breaking addition to an extremely successful initiative begun in 2006 by Dublin City Libraries and UNESCO. One Book/One City, encourages the reading of a particular tome connected with the city (either through authorship or theme) during the month of April. For the first time in its comparatively short history however, the One Book/One City choice for 2014 is a collection of poems about Dublin by contemporary poets and poets long since consigned to history. If Ever You Go teems with voices, complementing, contrasting, querying, – in the process, re-routing the map of the city’s unique identity. Whether the reader is a casual poetry tourist or has a vested interest in poetry (on this note, a timely reminder that legions of poets occupy our Capital), this collection is one to savour. The book’s layout is indicative of the flow of life,
one poem following on from another, as life’s blood itself pumps through arteries. The sequence is not mindful of chronology but rather ‘attuned’ to how rhythmic voices respond to each other, in some cases across the centuries. 17th Century poet Lodowick Bryskett initiates a conversation with Eavan Boland (b.1944), both poets taking the River Liffey as subject matter.
Broken into sections, Liffeyside, Northside and Southside, the poems, ballads, haiku, take the reader on a virtual tour of a Metropolis filled with memory, emotion, vivid imagery and the startling energies of the imagination. The bricks and mortar of buildings become sources of creative investigation as evidenced in Sheila 0’Hagen’s poem Hopkins in Newman House, where Hopkins ‘rustling fifty papers/for correction before tea,’ has entered 0’Hagen’s contemporary imagination. Poems such as this one open the portal to possibilities, where past and present converge.
Clondalkin poet Colm Keegan takes Kavanagh’s Stony Grey Soil, and uses its architecture to create a new work (Stony, Grey, Soiled) based on his growing up in Ballymun. Kavanagh’s immortal lines “Oh stony grey soil of Monaghan/The laugh from my love you thieved” becomes, in Keegan’s contemporary voice: “Ballymun, you rockhard bitch/My childhood love you thieved.” It seems appropriate that the official launch of the publication

took place in the GPO, a building synonymous with revolution and our colonial past. Easter 1916 by W.B. Yeats opens The Northside section, followed by Vona Groarke’s Imperial Measure, a poem which quotes from Padraic Pearse’s letter from the GPO to his mother. Songs of the city are also included, such as Dicey Riley (Anonymous) and Summer in Dublin (Liam Reilly). Damien Dempsey and Phil Lynott also feature. Overall, there’s a tremendous sense of due care being taken throughout the book. Editors Pat Boran, Dedalus Press and Gerard Smyth proved themselves more than capable in this regard. Their essays on the process reveal their personal connection to a city which in Smyth’s case is his place of birth and in Midlander Boran’s, a place he came to and made his home (after sixteen changes of address).
As a Midlander myself, I feel privileged to have two poems included in If Ever You Go. Black Ball Gown, is set in the 1970’s when I came to Dublin to live in flatland (a place with “smoky ceilings”). The buying of a ball gown in a second hand shop on Clanbrassil Street became a metaphor for how I coped on leaving home for the first time. I worked in the typing pool at Heuston Station, learning the lexicon of railways (“strange Van Hool McArdle words”). That particular shop has disappeared but its being there is part of the city’s story. Warriors is set on the LUAS and relates a moment of revelation, one which highlights how our multicultural society has added to our imaginative treasury.
Swift, Yeats, Joyce, Beckett, Clarke and Kavanagh are side by side with Heaney, Boland, Bolger, Meehan and Kinsella. However, it’s lovely to see poets here I personally know, poets I both admire and respect. Declan Collinge’s tender poem Father and Son 1966, exquisitely frames generational drama while Enda Coyle Greene’s Hawkins Street, ends on an image which seems to speak for the overall experience of this walking tour through the city - when poetry is the only place to go to find shelter: “she explodes her blue umbrella,/at exactly the right moment/the rain begins.”
If Ever You Go, published by Dedalus Press is available in all good bookshops for €12.99.

IASE calls on Dublin businesses to participate in the seventh annual National Supported Employment Week
The Irish Association for Supported Employment (IASE) has announced the seventh annual National Supported Employment Week, which will take place from Monday 7th – Sunday 13th April 2014. Job Shadow Day (Wednesday 9th April) is the high point of the week and will see hundreds of people with disabilities take the opportunity to shadow a workplace mentor as he or she goes about a normal working day. The IASE is calling on businesses in Dublin and throughout the country to support equal employment opportunities and sign up at www.iase.ie to participate.
Last year, over 460 individuals with a disability shadowed at 439 employment sites in Ireland, with 27 securing a permanent job placement as a direct result. Following on from its success in Ireland, National Supported Employment Week is set to roll-out in Europe, with 12 countries already committed to take part in 2015. Many high profile individuals participated in Job Shadow Day last year to include Minister Joan Burton and popular Today FM presenter Ray D’Arcy.
Job Shadow Day is designed to give people with disabilities the unique opportunity to get a close up look at the world of work for one day or one week in April each year to discover and learn about the skills and education required to compete and succeed in the work place.
Wexford shows nobody wants 1, 2c coins
A trial conducted last year in Wexford shows that all business and the vast majority of people want to ditch those little annoying one cent and two cent coins.
The National Payments Plan (NPP) have said the Trial was run from September 16th to November 17th 2013 with
the aim of reducing the need for 1c and 2c coins, and showed strong support for rounding from both consumers and retailers.
NPP Programme Manager, Ronnie O'Toole, said: "The results of the Trial were clear. The answer from Wexford was a resounding 'yes'. When 'don't knows' are excluded, 85pc of consumers and 100pc of retailers surveyed believe rounding should be applied nationally."
48 While the direct average cost of producing these coins exceeds their face value, with a 1c coin costing approximately 1.3c to mint, there are significant other economic costs associated with the transport and storage of these coins in the economy.

Business leaders shift from costcutting
There has been a dramatic shift in the attitudes of Ireland's top business leaders away from cost cutting towards growth, according to the first ever Changing Times Leadership Survey from IndEx Partners. The report, based on research among senior business leaders in over 214 companies in Ireland, found that over 6 in 10 business leaders are now citing a
strategic move away from cost-cutting as a driver of change and are instead focused on future growth as the driver for implementing business change programmes. The study findings present one of the strongest signals yet that business leaders believe Ireland's nascent economic recovery will take hold. It found that 61pc of leaders now believe that the key drivers of change have shifted from cost cutting to gearing the organisation up for future challenges and opportunities.
Circle Internet Financial, a bitcoin startup that has its international base in Dublin and is led by technology entrepreneur Jeremy Allaire, said it secured $17 million from venture capital investors to help fund its new service aimed at ordinary consumers. The move is another sign that bitcoin is moving from its libertarian roots and attracting sophisticated investors who believe that regulation of virtual currencies will help make them more legitimate.

SuperValu market share 1% behind Tesco
SuperValu has become Ireland's second largest grocer following the rebrand of Superquinn's stores last month and is closing in fast on global giant Tesco for Irish market share, according to latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland. SuperValu now accounts for 25.3% of Irish shoppers' grocery market spend, just 1.1 percentage points behind Tesco.
"Its sales have remained broadly in line with the market, which shows that it has been able to retain its market share while acquiring assets. Now, the main challenge for SuperValu is to convince previously loyal Superquinn shoppers of the merits of the SuperValu brand, and ultimately hold onto their custom," said Dave Berry, commercial director at Kantar Worldpanel.

Thomas Davis Health Drive
Thomas Davis fields almost 40 teams across the four codes of Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camogie and Ladies Football. In 2013 the club enjoyed many successes on the field with ladies senior footballers, under 21 hurlers, junior footballers and junior hurlers all bringing championship honours back to the Kiltipper Road club. Off the field the club has been active in promoting a healthier lifestyle to its members having been selected as one of only 18 clubs nationwide by GAA headquarters to take part in a healthy club pilot programme.
The Thomas Davis healthy club aims to engage in an awareness campaign with club members and the wider community to promote healthy living. Recent initiatives have included a walking club that takes place on Monday nights. This allows people to engage in a gentle fitwalk programme while connecting with other club members. Numbers have been strong over the winter months and this is expected to swell further over the summer months. The next initiative will see the launch of a ‘healthy food made easy’ course which will give parents, members and the club’s players more ideas on how to eat the right foods.
If anyone wants to take part in any of these initiatives or wants further information on the activities please contact Jackie Blanchfield on 087 231 1311.

Leinster Schools Junior Rugby Cup Final
Tallaght Stadium hosted the Leinster Schools Junior Rugby Cup final on Sunday 23rd of March, when Belvedere and Blackrock college met in an all Dublin Northside v Southside final.
It was Blackrock who prevailed on the day on a score line of 14-10 in an exciting match. Blackrock added the Junior Cup Title to the Senior Cup, which they won on March 16th.

DSI receive little government funding and have to fundraise almost 90% of the €2.4 million required to run their services. All services at local level are run on a voluntary basis by parents, funds raised by cyclists and sponsors will be used for the maximum benefit of DSI members and will make a difference to over 1,000 families in Leinster. Local Branches provide a wide range of services locally including Home Teacher Programmes, Adult Literacy Programmes, Speech and Occupational Therapy, Early Development Groups, and Social activities for children and adults.
Pat Clarke, CEO of DSI said: “The funds will make all the difference to the lives of people with Down syndrome in Leinster as well as their families by providing vital services and facilities in each county.” See www.tourdeleinster.ie for more details.

Senior Football Championship
The Old Firm of Tallaght GAA have been drawn to meet in this year’s Senior Football Championship. With St Anne’s playing in AFL Division 2 and Thomas Davis in AFL1 it has been quite a few years since they met. The game which is due to be played in May is sure to be a pulsating affair. With St Anne’s listed 200/1 and Thomas Davis at 50/1 to win the competition it is unlikely they will feature in the final in October but that won’t matter when the two Tallaght tribes go to war!

Women’s Football

By Padraig Conlon
The Ireland Women’s Football team take on European Champions Germany in Tallaght Stadium on Saturday 5th April in a World Cup Qualifier. Ireland are going well at the moment and are unbeaten so far in the group but the formidable German team will be a big test. InTallaght Magazine caught up with Ireland manager Sue Ronan and winger Áine O’Gorman ahead of this massive game.
What are your thoughts Sue, on this approaching qualifier?
We’re looking forward to playing Germany and welcoming them here to Dublin. For 20/30 years they’ve been one of the strongest teams in the world. Between themselves and the USA they’ve been vying for first and second in the world.
They currently lie second though this could change in the up coming rankings as they won they Algarve Cup. They’re unbeaten in the group but so are we. We’re on a good run with seven points out of nine and the team are on a good run. There’s strength and depth in the squad now, with 9 of the squad being home based and the other 9 playing abroad.
We’re in good shape to welcome the top team in the world to Dublin. Seven of our current squad were in the Under 17 2010 Silver Medal winning team so they have a taste of beating Germany. That was the first time ever that Germany lost a game at U 17 level when our girls beat them 1-0. They don’t have any fear. Áine O’Gorman agrees with her manager that the squad have every reason to look forward to welcoming the Germans to Tallaght.
“We’re playing really well as a team at the moment; we’re coming off the back of a good performance at the Cyprus Cup so I’m also looking forward to the match. There’s good team spirit, these are the games you want to play in. You want to test yourself against the best in the world.
“I’ve played against Germany before, they’re a very fit and strong team. But we’ve been very hard to break down defensively in our last few games so if we can bring that into this game, and try and get bodies forward when we can.”
Both Sue and Áine are hoping the football loving people of Tallaght will come out and show their support for our national team.
Áine thinks they may be surprised at the standard of women’s football. “I would advise anyone to come and give it a try. This German team are probably as fit and strong as the men! We’ve nothing to lose, we’re not expected to win so there’s no pressure on us. Being Irish we like being underdogs, we’ll give it our best shot.”

Conor Kenna

INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon
Conor Kenna has proved himself one of the outstanding players in the League of Ireland over the past few seasons. A centre half of real quality who skippered St Pats to the league title last season, the new Rovers captain and Kilnamanagh native is delighted to be playing for his local side. How are you settling in at Rovers?
I'm really enjoying it so far, it’s been brilliant. Pre season went well and we've got a few points on the board also so I'm happy with that.
They're a good bunch of lads; I'd know a lot of them from having played with them before. There's been a good bit of team bonding, we went to the Curragh and had a good bit of craic, which brought everyone together and we had a night out together as well.
There are a lot of new lads in this year so you do need those kind of things. There's a good atmosphere around the squad and training has been at 90 miles an hour, everybody has been at it. There's competition for places, which is great, you need that if you're going to win anything.
As an opponent how did you assess the Rovers team last season?
It’s hard being on the outside looking in at things, I do think you need to be involved to be able to really know what it's like but to me they had a team full of players with quality, and they still won three cups last season which showed they had that winning mentality.
You're from Kilnamanagh originally, were you a Rovers fan when you were younger? I've always had an interest in Rovers, I came and watched the European games in the stadium for example, but my father and family are all Pats fans. The younger generation are Rovers, my nephew Aaron plays with Rover 17s.
How did your family react to your move to The Hoops?
They didn't take it too well, there's a few not speaking to me but sure that's part and parcel of it! It's good banter as well though, isn't it!
What was your main reason for leaving Pats? Was money a factor?
The move had nothing to do with money, believe me, Pats actually offered me an improved deal to stay. A lot of people have been saying that I just moved for the money but I didn't, that didn't come into it.
To be honest with you for my own head I just felt that I needed to step away from Pats. I had four good years there, an unbelievable time which finished in a great
InTallaghtMaster50.qxp_Layout 1 27/03/2014 05:43 Page 57
57
place, but Rovers had always shown an interest in me. I think it's four times now they tried to sign me. I spoke with Trevor and was very impressed by his plans for the club plus I knew him from working with him before at Pats.
Toughest opponent you ever faced?
Probably Chicharito for Man Utd in the game for the league in 2010 but that was only a friendly. Competitively would probably be the Hannover players from the Europa league match in 2012. They were all top internationals, very good players. I've played against some good ones in the league here as well but those would have been the toughest.
Most memorable game in your career?
I think the game that won us the league last year against Sligo. It was my first time winning something in Ireland and it was a good game of football as well.
What are your targets with Rovers for the next two years?
Well I've left Champions League football at Pats and that's what I want to get back to, that'd be my aim plus I want to play every week.
Having experienced winning the championship yourself do you feel this bunch of players can also do it?
Absolutely, we're well capable of winning it. It's only early and we're a new bunch together but when you have so many lads scoring goals you always have a chance. We've a lot to work on, don't get me wrong, but we're going in the right direction. We haven't been relying on one person to score goals. We know we didn't play well in the Derry game but we got the draw. It was the first game of the season, and they're not nice, both teams feeling each other out. Derry came down to get the draw and they got it. They went off happy, we weren't happy with a draw that was the difference, so that was a good sign. When we got the equalizer we wanted to go on and win it and we ran out of time but the team showed good character and that was great to see in the first game. It felt like a defeat to us because we want to play better but look it, we'll take the point, it's a good point, Derry are a good side and they'll take a lot of points off teams.
What would you say to Irish football fans who have no interest in our national football league?
I’d just ask them to come and watch it. If you watch some of the English games on television they’re terrible. Some of the live games on telly from our league last year were brilliant. If people give it a chance and go out and watch it the quality is there. Look at the Irish national team and the amount of them that played in the league, it speaks for itself. I’d say give it a chance. People from this country flying over to the UK every weekend to be honest it’s crazy but look you’re not going to change that if they’re not doing it by now. But it’s important to get the younger kids interested because they’ll hopefully stick with it when they’re older. It’s great for families, I often bring my own lad and he loves going.
Finally Conor what is your opinion on Rovers project with the First It seems like the league is Division team? going to be very open I think it’s brilliant. For lads that are again this year? Yeah it does, Pats won the league last year and they’ve added to their squad so the pressures all on them to be honest.
Dundalk have added as well after a good season last year, Derry likewise plus they have a new manager and Sligo will also be challenging so it’s going to be interesting. We’ll be fine, I think let all them have all the hype they want.
16, 17, 18 it’s great that Rovers can offer them First Division football as it’s a great place to learn your trade. It’s a tough league but it’ll help bring them on. I think more clubs will want to do it. Credit to Rovers for having the balls to go out and do it. There’s lads coming training with us now, 15/16 year olds, they’re talented players, it’s just about getting them in at the right age and getting them into the club’s way of thinking.

LÁ FHÉILE PÁDRAIG By Seán O Maher
Lá Fhéile Padraig a bhí ann Bhí gach rud glas, bhí seamróg ag fás. Lá Fhéile Pádraig a bhí ann. Bhí paráid ar na sléibhte agus daoine ag ceilúradh 17ú Márta gach duine ag rince. Ceol tradsúinta ar suíl. Sean daoine, daoine oige, gach duine ag ceilúradh. Níl aon tir cosúil le Éireann

LÁ FHÉILE PÁDRAIG By Caitlín Ní Chraith
Eirím suas go sasta Is Lá Fheile Padraig é Cuirim m’eadaí traidisiúnta orm Is amach an doras liom réidh Bhual mé le mo chara Is chuamar chuig an paráid Bhí flotaí le daoine gléasta ann Is chuaigh an paráid tríd mo shráid
Bhí muid ag an bparáid i comhair uair a chloig Bhí an ceilí go h-álainn ansin Ansin nuair a chuamar abhaile Bhí féasta mór mílteach againn
Ansin rinnemar an paidir Do Phádraig agus Íosa Ansin bhí milseog againn Is bhí mo bholg lán
LÁ FHÉILE PÁDRAIG By Liam OhJú
Phioc mé suas seamróg A bhí comh glas ar fad Ansin chuaigh mé chuig rince Gaeilge Ach ansin duirt mé “Slán”
Chuala mé banna píoba Taobh amuigh ar an tsráid Chuamar i lár na cathrach Chonaiceamar a lán bád
An rud is fearr is maith liom Faoi an lá alainn seo Ná a bheith le do clann Cad í an rud is fearr leatsa?

Lá Fhéile Pádraig. Bíonn daoine gleasta suas. Ba é Pádraig an fhearr a bfuair reidh le na nathair as Éireann. Bíonn na leprechaun ag rince. Bíonn paráid mór ansin. Bíonn Dia ag cabhair le Phádraig. Níl aon nathair in Éireann anois ach sa zú.
