Welcome to Edition 51 of InTallaght With this month marking the 1000th year anniversary of Brian Boru’s victory in The Battle of Clontarf is it not about time we forgave our Viking invaders for killing our last High King and everyone just moved on? Is it also a coincidence that next month Ireland will be invading Denmark, the historical home of the Vikings, to take part in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest? I think not! Dubliner Kasey Smith and the band Can Linn will carry the hopes of the nation with them to Copenhagen so we decided to meet up with Kasey to find out how preparations are coming along ahead of the semi final showdown on May 8th. It’s been a long time since we won the competition so fingers crossed this is going to be the year we add to our record breaking number of wins. With the local and European Elections taking place at the end of next month we’d just like to remind readers that the deadline for registering to vote is May 2nd, don’t miss out on your chance to have your say in how your area is managed. XXXX Alice In Litterland Mayor Looney officially started Eco-Week 2014 by presenting certificates and prizes to winning students of the South Dublin County Council funded Garbo Production Alice in Litterland. This drama based workshop produced fabulous Mad Hatter hats from recycled materials. Mayor Looney said “What a fantastic way to start the week’s events. The hats displayed by the children today are wonderful. This is the 10th year the Council has run Eco-Week and there is a wide variety of FREE workshops, talks, tours and events throughout the week.” Events took place in schools, libraries, community centres and businesses throughout the week.
Mayor Looney continued “The Alice in Litterland parade has been very inspiring, lively and wonderful to watch. It was great to see all the hats created by the young people out of recyclable materials and all from the contents of our green bin. Well done to all involved.”

“Tree Of Hope” Movement Grows Local “Tree of Hope” group, which strives to provide a place of comfort where survivors can memorialise their loved ones lost to suicide or living with depression, have continued in their tree planting efforts. Five trees have been planted so far, in Dodder Park and St Aengus’s, the Men’s Shed in Árd Mór, Citywest, St Martin’s Parish, Aylesbury and CARP Killinarden. As of April 7th, South Dublin County Council are providing 30 minutes free parking for a trial period of six months. A 30 minutes free parking period will be provided in the villages of Clondalkin, Lucan, Palmerston, Rathcoole, Rathfarnham, Tallaght and Templeogue. However adjacent residential roads in which pay and display parking operate are excluded. For drivers who wish to avail of the 30 minute free period no action is necessary and no ticket purchase is required, but drivers must pay as normal to extend their parking beyond 30 minutes. South Dublin County Council will gather data to determine the success of the of the 30 minutes free parking in relation to supporting footfall in commercial areas through parking space occupancy, availability and turnover.

News Tallaght Designer One Of Six Fashion Graduates Selected To Take Part In The Innovators Show At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2014. Ciara Nolan (29), from Tallaght, is being hailed as one to watch after she was chosen to take part in the prestigious Fashion Week Australia. She has been living in Australia on and off since 2005 as she learns all the tricks of the trade, and cites Simone Rocha as her biggest inspiration. Drawing inspiration from all things Dinosaur, the collection has a distinct streetwear feel, incorporating signature digital prints combined with specially developed textiles such as bonded jersey and embossed leather. Celebration Concert Local Writers’ Group launch anthology An incredible crowd turned out to the County library in Tallaght for the launch of a highly anticipated anthology. Kaleidoscope, a collective memoir, written by St Muirin’s Writers’ Group and published by Emu Ink, is the work of 11 local women led by coordinator and editor Marie Gahan. The beautiful compilation of prose and poetry has been in the making for several months as the talented troupe put pen to
IT Tallaght Instabition IT Tallaght 3rd year Advertising and Marketing Communications students held a photography competition on April 3rd. The competition had a twist as students were required to upload their entries through the use of the widely popular service Instagram. The competition was open throughout the month of March and there were various categories a picture could be entered under eg: #Selfie #Photobomb #Food #Collegelife and many more. Over 200 entries were received altogether.

The Advertising students fundraised with a bake sale and a pub quiz. On the day of the event the finalist’s pictures were displayed in the college and students were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite. The first place winner of €250 was awarded to Karl Moran (below), second place of €100 to Ciara Doyle and third place of €50 to Mark Doyle.
On Wednesday, April 30th, a concert celebrating five years of the South Dublin County Council Annette Halpin Memorial Music Award will take place at 7.30pm in RUA RED. This annual award supports aspiring young musicians to develop their talent by funding such things as the purchasing of a new instrument, the attendance of instrumental/vocal master-classes, and the recording new work. Performances will be given by previous recipients of the award which includes various strings players from Young European Strings, a tuba player, a saxophone player, two rock bands and a new work from a young composer. Members of Annette Halpin’s family will also perform. The guest of honour will be Vyvienne Long, former cellist with Damien Rice and now a successful solo performer. Along with a performance of her own, she will also confer the 2014 winners with their Award. All proceeds from the concert will be directed into the future funding of the award. News An Cosan To Take Community Education Programme Developed In Tallaght West To Communities Struggling With Poverty Around The Country An Cosán, the Tallaght-West based educational social innovation organisation that advocates participation, empowerment, social justice and equality for those who are marginalised in society, have announced that it will take its community education programmes national, through an online virtual learning in partnership with IT Carlow. The expansion programme, which was launched by Pat Rabbitte, TD, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, was developed in partnership with ESB, Accenture and IT Carlow. Developed over 28 years at its centre in Tallaght West, An Cosán is now expanding its work in adult community education to communities around Ireland to widen its impact on educational disadvantage and poverty. Adapted for online delivery, the rollout will allow students Sharon Bermingham from An Cosan with children from the An Cosan preschool group
around the country, through Community Groups, to access accredited courses on campus networks, community facilities, public libraries and from home via the internet. In the first phase, An Cosán will work with two community education centres, Longford Women’s Link and The South Hill Family Resource Centre in Limerick. Both organisations have recruited local tutors and individuals interested in engaging in digital education.

Since 1999, 2,500 awards have been gained by students on courses accredited by FETAC and HETAC (Further and Higher Education Training Awards Council) and ICS (Irish Computer Skills). An Cosán estimates that 500 students will undertake its courses online over the lifetime of the pilot.
“Digital tools and progressive people have changed the game - and are levelling the playing field. This would not be possible without the web and, crucially for the people who will learn here, without organisations like An Cosán. I am more than a little proud that this has been developed and come to fruition here in Tallaght through An Cosán.”
Launching the programme, the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte TD said, “The importance of education cannot be overstated. This new initiative harnesses the potential of digital and will make important new educational opportunities available to people who would previously have missed out.
Liz Waters, CEO of An Cosan said, “An Cosán is going digital because that is where the future of education lies. At An Cosán we use the power of transformative education through learning and leadership to end the injustice of poverty wherever we find it. For over a quarter of a century, we’ve developed
a community education model that outperforms many state educational institutions and we have higher retention rates and better educational outcomes. Now, using the power of technology, we want to bring the model developed in Tallaght West to other communities around the country struggling with poverty. ESB has committed significant resources to make this project possible and will share their expertise in a range of areas. Accenture provided support in converting An Cosán’s offering to online and providing project management over the lifetime of the pilot. IT Carlow accredit the Special Purpose Award and support the technological frame work, Blackboard Collaborate, to deliver the programmes. Over the next three years An Cosán will make a range of courses available to community groups and community workers through virtual teaching and learning in a blended process of online and in person training/ teacher led education. www.ancosan.com

we were getting 12 points from everywhere, so either way, with or without Louis, we were going to win. Hazel and I believe that it was the right song for Ireland, and the public and the jury obviously did as well.

It’s a nice feeling to know that Ireland knew it was a very good song and voted. Thankfully we weren’t involved in the feud. It was a great campaign and every mentor did their best for their act so the emotions were raised on the night.
Kasey Smith will represent Ireland in this years Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen alongside her mentor Hazel Kaneswaran and the band Can-Linn after their dramatic win in February’s Euro Song Competition. For Kasey it was a winning return after missing out last year. A former member of girl band Wonderland, the 24 year old singer from Donaghmede has her sights firmly set on next months contest in Denmark. We met up with her to discuss the plans for the big night, her own musical background and her pride at representing her country.
How are the preparations going for Copenhagen? It’s all going really good, rehearsals have been great and we’ve decided on the stage and our clothes. I can’t give too much away right now though, all will be revealed in the semifinal! We’re all looking forward to it so much. I got fitted for my dress last week, that took a bit of time because they have to fit it around me. I’ve been helping a bit with the design as well. The designer has done an amazing job, I’m so impressed, it’s going to be a real show stopper. I’m a singer first InTallaghtMaster51.indd 18
and foremost so that’s what I like to focus on. I leave the instrument work to others as all the members of Can Linn are fantastic musicians. We all feel we have a very good song and also a great performance to go with it. We’ll show the audience that we can sing a great pop song mixed with traditional elements.
Are you still on a high from your win on The Late Late? Yes I’m still buzzing with the win in the qualifiers, that feeling hasn’t ended yet! I’m still in shock, it’s all very surreal! It was great to win that night, it’s
How are you handling all the interviews and media stuff? Ah it’s grand; I don’t mind at all, every interview is different. It depends on the interviewer I suppose! Ah no everyone is being really nice and supportive so it’s not a problem.

21 lines “Keep your head above water, keep thinking of tomorrow,” are so positive. It’s about Ireland’s rise from the darkness and coming into the light. The country is coming out of recession so hopefully things are improving for people after what’s been a tough few years for so many. It’s a positive message to Irish people around the world that where will be brighter days. The hard times in our lives teach us important lessons. I have been there myself and I always came back stronger than ever. It’s so important to have a positive attitude.
Having missed out last year to Ryan Dolan, were you glad you didn’t get through when he did so badly? Ryan deserved a lot better last year, his song was amazing and he definitely didn’t deserve to finish last. No way. It was hard watching it because it’s your country and Ryan is a lovely guy. It’s hard to know what people want, hopefully they’ll love Heartbeat as much as we do. Ryan has been in touch and sent me a lovely message. A lot of people feel the block voting works against us but if the song is great that shouldn’t matter and

What are your own memories of previous Eurovisions? Were you a fan growing up? Absolutely I was, I remember being around four sitting in my Nanny and Grandads with all my goodies and popcorn watching it and just being fascinated with all the different countries and the whole show really. Since then I’ve always taken a big interest in it, I love all the weird and wonderful aspects to it, the music, the costumes, everything. To actually get a chance to take part in it and represent Ireland is such a huge honour. Only 58 people have ever represented this country and to be among that number is still unreal to be honest with you. It really is a dream come true for me.
Do you think your experience with Wonderland will help? It’s made it a bit easier, I was so young when I started out with them, only 17, and we did some

Do you come from a musical family? Yes I do, I grew up in a musical family, I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. My Grand Dad Paddy was a singer in a well known show band and my uncle Paul is a musician who had a number one in Ireland in the late 80’s. They’ve both always helped me out and give me advice which I really appreciate. My Grand Dad would always tell me to make sure I do my warm up exercises, things like that. It was great growing up because it gave us a connection and helped us bond. Paul is on tour with Katy Perry at the moment but
We’re going out on April 29th, the semi final then takes place on May 8th and if we get through that the final is on May 10th. So we’ll be out there for nearly two weeks. I can’t wait; I’m so looking forward to getting to Copenhagen and seeing the city as I haven’t been before. The venue for the show is an old converted factory on an island; apparently the stage is absolutely huge! It’s five times the size of the stage we had in RTE! I’ve been telling everyone that the only way out to the venue is by bike! I can’t wait to meet all the other countries. What are your career plans for the rest of the year?
Away from the Eurovision what type of music are you into?
Well at this present moment I’m just concentrating on the Eurovision but I’ll definitely be back writing a few songs after that. I’ve written a few songs down the years and I also have a few I wrote when I was over in Nashville last year with my uncle Paul who lives there.
I have a mad musical taste; I’m into everything from Nirvana to Lady Gaga, Stone Roses, Whitney Houston! I just love all types of music, all genres, dance; indie; country; trad; you name it! At the moment I’m listening to a lot of London Grammar and Jake Bugg. I love how a song can really touch me. I’m one of those people that when I hear an album I like I over play it again and again for a year until I’m sick of it and can’t listen to it anymore! There’s no type of music I hate, I think it’s important to have an open mind when it comes to music.
That was a wonderful experience, I got to work with some amazing people over there that’ve had country number ones, and they really taught me so much, I was so lucky to get to work with them. I want to make an album after this. I love writing songs because it’s such a great way to express yourself.
Finally Kasey, away from music what do you like to do to relax?
If you could work with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
I love walking, running, reading. I’m quite boring really! I love books, especially non fiction, I love reading about other peoples life stories.
Oh that’s a very difficult question. Let’s see. I really love George Michael so I’d have to pick him. I think he’s brilliant and I’d imagine it would be a great experience to work with him. I’d have to have Whitney and Mariah in there as well.
I love movies as well; I’ve only started getting into scary ones recently! My boyfriend Wes has got me into Game of Thrones and Walking Dead, really enjoy them. I also like going out with my friends for a few cocktails as well!
I used to love Whitney’s version of “I Will Always Love You” and would sing it quite a bit when I was younger! So George, Whitney and Mariah with me on drums! Or Phil Collins! What about that?!

How big is improv in this country?
Formed in Dublin in 2013, The Splendid Lunatics are an Improvisational Comedy Troupe consisting of members; Conor Doyle, Brian Greene, Mark Hanratty, Declan McFadden, Ciaran McMahon and Diane O’Connor, with Mark, Diane and Brian all from Tallaght.
Diane: It’s certainly getting exciting for improv here. November saw the first Improv Fest in Ireland set up by a guy called Neil Curran. There are a lot more improv groups setting up, certainly around Dublin anyway and there seems to be more of a sense of community about it in the last year, in my opinion anyway.
Ciaran: Yes I’d agree. Originally when I started out there were two improv groups and since They have all worked as improvisers and stand-ups on the Dublin comedy scene for many years, then I think there’s nearly an with experience from troupes such as The Ha’Penny Laughs, Comedy Dublin, The Absurders and improv group for every day of Laughter Lines. Around Europe improv is really popular, I’ve a friend who lives in Germany, who works in a theatre, and improvisation is very good there, apparently they love to see it done in English for some reason. It’s becoming bigger and bigger around the world, it’s just a shame it’s taking longer to get a foot in in this country.
Do you guys have to deal much with hecklers? Brian: No not really because I think improv is a good way of placating because in stand up it’s very much one way whereas if you have someone in the audience who thinks they’re a bit of a wise guy at an improv show it’ll feed into the show and they’ll end up getting laughs. Usually we’ll make them the star of the show! Diane: Stand up relies on the crowd understanding or sympathising with your point of view and in some ways that’s more difficult. Whereas in improv you have a different skill set, it’s not just about how I’m feeling it’s about what you want my character to become.
The Splendid Lunatics realise in seconds “Oh my God I’m an idiot!” A lot of time you’ll have people coming into their first improv show and going “Ah hang on, what’s this all about?” Then actually raving about it two hours later after they’ve seen it and telling loads of people about how great it is. It’s new to a lot of people but once they see it they’re blown away.
Do you have any plans to do a nationwide tour this year? Mark: Travelling around the country and taking the show to theatres is something we really want to do. I think every large town has a theatre, there’s a lot of places in Ireland that don’t get any comedy acts of any description so if they got the chance they’d definitely go. Diane: Because we are still a new group we are just concentrating on this show in the Civic at the moment but a tour is something we will want to do in the future.
Brian: The name implies there will be madness but it will be good! Mark: We were going to call ourselves The Rolling Stones but it turns out someone had already taken it… Ciaran: What I really like about it is the logo, which Conor came up with. It’s important to have something that makes the name stand out.
Finally guys what is the groups plan for world domination?! Brian: Our ambition is to start filming some of the sketches we do in rehearsal and putting them out there, some podcasts as well. The technology is there now to become a
distributor of your own material. Mark: People always say “all you have to do is put your stuff up on YouTube and you can get loads of viewers that way” - if only it were that simple! There’s gazillions of videos on YouTube, there’s almost too much choice there. People think you don’t need mainstream media anymore but you really do if you want to get people to like you. Diane: Yes, hopefully we can contribute to that gazillions of videos! Brian: At the moment the priority is the live shows, they are the most enjoyable because there’s no safety net, if something goes wrong we just have to deal with it. The Amazing Spiderman Dropped Into The Centre To Meet The Little Super Heros
We had a very special guest drop into the centre last Friday 11th April. The Amazing Spiderman visited us on the Centre Mall and posed for photos for all the little super heroes that came over to meet the Marvel Comic’s Super Hero. Spiderman was showing all the kids how to aim and shoot the famous spider web he uses to catch all the bad guys and super villains.

Eco Week A Great Success Here In The Centre We had a €50 Square Voucher for the best dressed Little Super Hero... It was a very tough decision to pick a winner because you all looked amazing and put so much effort into your costumes, we had little Spidermen, Supermen, Captain America, Iron Man but the winner was Lee from Firhouse, who came as The Incredible Hulk. He looked great with his hulk facepaint and bulging biceps. The Square was definitely the safest place in Tallaght on Friday afternoon with all the little super heros on Centre Mall protecting all our customers. Keep an eye out on our Facebook and Twitter pages for more upcoming events over the next few months. And don’t forget to checkout Spiderman’s new movie, The Amazing Spiderman 2 is now showing in IMC on Level 3.
We were delighted to be involved once again with Eco Week, which was organised by the South Dublin County Council, here at the Square and this year the highlight was undoubtedly when the Mayor of SDCC Dermot Looney officially open our E-Car charging stations at the South Entrance on Level 2 (adjacent to Argos). This is the latest in a long line of our initiatives here at the Square in helping to protect our environment and we are looking forward to the day when we have to install more stations due to the high demand. Each day we showcased a different aspect of eco-week on the Centre Mall on Level 2, from Water Conservation, Dog Walking Etiquette to Waste Management and Energy Consumption there was a wealth of information available to our customers to help them
live a greener life. We look forward to improving our Environmental Activities here in the Centre throughout the coming 12 months.

Cheeky Monkey with the help Andy Case from G4S, recently collected dozens of easter eggs for the National Children’s Hospital. We would like to thank everyone who donated Easter Eggs for this great cause and hopefully making the sick children’s stay over Easter a little bit easier.
We are delighted to announce that our Community Champions this edition are a group of local charity fundraisers who recently raised over €34k for the Lauralynn Hospice, well exceeding their €25k target.
Tha group organised a fantastic event, Strictlylauralynn in the Ballsbridge Hotel on March 1st where over 550 people attending the night to support the 13 couples taking part, special judges on the nights including Lucy Kenney (TV presenter) and Adrian Kennedy (Radio Host). 9 of the fundraisers also went over to Barcelona to compete in

Some of Ireland’s biggest stars were in attendance at this year’s Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs) and InTallaght Magazine was stuck in the middle of them all. The awards have received quite a lot of negative press due to the poor production and problems with the sound on the televised show but for those of us who were there in the Hilton Doubletree Hotel it was a very rare and exciting chance to get to mingle with some proper acting greats. On a positive note it was great to honor all the acting and producing talent in this country and some of the big names in attendance included President Michael D Higgins, Michael Fassbender, Colin Farrell, Jamie Dornan, Fionnula Flanagan, Victoria Smurfit, Steve Coogan, Jeremy Irons, Colm Meaney, Brendan Gleeson, Neil Jordan, Jack Reynor and Eva Birthistle. InTallaght Magazine had a big interest in proceedings with four of our cover stars from the last year, Saoirse Ronan, Peter Coonan, Mary Murray and Amy Huberman all nominated for InTallaghtMaster51.indd 36
awards. It was great to catch up with both Mary and Peter on the night, especially because the latter picked up the award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV show for his portrayal of Fran in Love/Hate. Accompanied by his heavily pregnant partner Kim O’Driscoll, his win this year was all the sweeter after he just missed out on a gong last year. “It’s amazing to be recognised in the field you work in, along with the lads as well, and I’m delighted to win. I left my Dad at home this year and I’ve Kim with me tonight, so I was a winner already. She’s due in about four weeks. We can’t wait for it.” Mary was also in flying form and delighted to be there along with her Love/Hate colleagues. “This bit where you have to talk to the press and cameras is a bit awkward but apart from that I’m delighted to be here, are you?! Once you get chatting it gets a little bit easier!” Kelly Thornton from Terenure is another name to watch for the future and the 17 year old, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Life’s A Breeze, was there with her mother Maria Creighton. “It’s a bit overwhelming to
be nominated so early in my career, I’m still in shock! But it’s fantastic, I’m so happy to get the nomination.” Brendan Gleeson and Calvary were the big winners on the night, claiming three of the major awards, including Best Film and Best Actor. Meanwhile, Neil Jordan’s Byzantium picked up two, with Neil Jordan winning Best Director and Saoirse Ronan, who played the female lead in the picture winning Best Actress. Backstage the craic was good. When Peter Coonan was asked by one of the photographers to pose with his award and he said he would if the photographer would “leave me alone in the future.” He then had everyone in stitches when he told the assembled media people how the same photographer had been hit by an egg the day before for trying to take pictures of the Love/Hate set! “Somebody has a good shot!” said the actor and for a split second he morphed into Fran! We offered congratulations to rising star Jamie Dornan who was extremely shy and humble with no trace of any Hollywood attitude.
Michael Fassbender was honoured as best supporting actor for his Oscar nominated role in 12 Years a Slave and he caused quite a lot of excitement among the ladies backstage. He was very friendly, posing for photos and even agreeing to a selfie with all the assembled female journos. Brendan Gleeson likewise was delighted with his win for Best Actor and joked that it was extra special because he beat his son Domhnall who was nominated in the same category. To finish the night, President Michael D Higgins collected an honorary award for his outstanding contribution to the Irish film and television industry. Presenting the award, Colin Farrell and Amy Huberman delivered an emotional tribute to the popular president while Hollywood star Mel Gibson featured in a short film congratulating him on his win. Gibson apologised for not being able to be at the awards in person and praised the President for his support for helping him secure filming locations for his 1995 blockbuster Braveheart.

AMAZING APPLES Slipping By

By Colm O’Muiri Amazing Apples are a five piece folk/ rock band from Galway and their second single Slipping By is out now. The band is made up of Darragh Crehan, Cian Crehan, Anthony Ryan, Brian Grace and Eanna Fahy who have grown in popularity over the past few months when they decided to perform their own music, instead of covers.
The Pixies currently consists of founders Black Francis (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar) and David Lovering (drums). Their fifth studio album, Indie Cindy is their first since 1991’s Tromp Le Monde. What Goes Boom is the first song on the album with a heavy rock sound and fantastic verses and is a great song to kick off the album. This is followed by the mellower Greens and Blues, the chorus in this song is great and having never listened to the Pixies before I was very impressed at this stage. I consider title track Indie Cindy to be a terrible song, with singer Black Francis talking through the verses, but when the chorus hits the song comes into its own and becomes more bearable. BagBoy follows the title track and like the rest of the album the guitars, drums and bass are brilliant. However it is very much like Indie Cindy in the sense the song is terrible aside from the chorus. Magdalena is a brilliant haunting song and is followed by Silver Snail a dark song lyrically which builds to a chorus that’s short and sweet. Both these tracks show how good a vocalist Francis is when he is on form.

You can’t help but tap along to this song which is really catchy and will put a smile on your face. Blue Eyed Hexe kicks off with a thumping guitar that builds until the powerful vocals of Francis take over for the chorus. The solo in the middle of the song is on point and not too long or over the top, Blue Eyed Hexe is a classic American rock song. Ring the Bell is a good soft rock song but the next song Another Toe in the Ocean brings it to another level. A fantastic uplifting beat from the band that blends with the vocals brilliantly and really is a highlight of the album.
Mixing Folk with rock and pop lead to comparisons with Mumford and Sons but it’s their vocals which really sets them apart. The song is well worth a listen with several unusual instruments on show, especially the fiddle and the mandolin which are prominent throughout. You can purchase Slipping By on iTunes or Google Play and for more info on the band visit their Facebook page. They will also be performing in Whelans on April 27.
Andro Queen the sound changes. It’s a welcome slower pace, but it is not a great song compared with the five that preceded it. Snakes kick off with a gorgeous guitar lick that leads to another brilliant chorus and another great song on the album. Jaime Bravo is another solid song that closes the album the way it started, on a high. This is a great album, aside from Indie Cindy and BagBoy, and I am sure new and old fans of The Pixies will thoroughly enjoy this album.

It is more than ten years since we first experienced 3G technology and it is fair to say it has revolutionised the way we use our mobile phones. The 3G was more than capable at delivering e-mail services, maps and Facebook as well as low quality video. Now the new kid on the block, 4G, has arrived to address these limitations. 3G has been literally creaking under the weight of the millions of text messages that are been sent each day and this user has been frustrated many times in Croke Park at the inability of the network to cope with the thousands of gloating Dubs sending messages at the same time. With 4G this congestion will be a thing of the past! 4G speeds are expected to

exceed 10Mbs and can reach 30Mbps, which is about 10 times the speed available on a 3G network. This will help users access HD video content, Mbps heavy games and stream music seamlessly whilst mobile! So who is offering what in this crowded marketplace? Eircom were first to market although initially are only available in Dublin, Carlow and Athlone, which at first glance seems sparse but does represent over 30% of the population. Speeds reported on both their Meteor and eMobile brands have exceeded 20Mpbs. Vodafone have almost 50% of the market covered and those who switch to 4G get unlimited data for 3 months before it is capped at 8GB a month. O2 and Three Ireland also have 4G offerings with the latter offering it free to existing bill pay customers until May. The market is expected to change frequently and with users using more and more data streaming content on platforms such as Netflix, YouTube and
Spotify, 4G providers will introduce plans with higher usage to cope with the demand. You will need a 4G compatible handset to access the services and in some cases Sim cards will need to be upgraded to ensure compatibility. Apple has certified 4G and it is now fully available on their newer devices.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the second video game which will coincide with the release of the films. The first game took place after the events of the first movie whereas this one takes place alongside the events of the film. However it will have an alternative story to avoid any spoilers. As I mentioned above the plot of the game follows the film which is for Spider-Man to find the killer of his Uncle Ben. The game will also have a host of villains from the Spider-Man universe some of whom are Kraven The Hunter, Electro and Kingpin. The Amazing Spider-Man the video game will be an open world format which will allow the user to swing around New York. The New York in the game is also going to be more expansive and more detailed than the first game, which can only be a good thing. Another aspect of the game is that most of the story will take place in the open world, giving the gamer more freedom to roam.

This game features a morality system known as Hero or Menace where players will be rewarded for stopping crimes in progress throughout the game. However if players choose consistently not to stop crimes they will be punished for it. The crimes from the first game have been expanded on and made better with the inclusion of hostage situations and arson. As the game progresses these crimes become harder such as going from fighting criminals on the street to chasing one down who manages to escape in a vehicle.

Another of my mother’s recommendations, Brooklyn transports the reader to a different time and circumstance for young Irish emigrants. Hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking, Colm Tóibín’s sixth novel, Brooklyn, is set in Brooklyn and Ireland in the early 1950s, when one young woman crosses the ocean to make a new life for herself. Eilis Lacey has come of age in small-town Ireland in the hard years following World War Two. Despite her modest training in book-keeping and great potential in the profession, there just aren’t any jobs in Enniscorthy for her. When an Irish priest from Brooklyn offers to sponsor Eilis in America -- to live and work in a Brooklyn neighborhood “just like Ireland” -- she decides she must go, leaving her fragile mother and her charismatic sister behind. Eilis finds work in a department store on Fulton Street, and when she least expects it, finds love. Tony, who loves the Dodgers and his big Italian family, slowly wins her over
with patient charm. But just as Eilis begins to fall in love with Tony, devastating news from Ireland threatens the promise of her future. Brooklyn is deftly written, with a very sympathetic character in protagonist Eilis. She is young and naive and finding her way in a world very different to what she is used to. I could imagine myself reacting very similarly to the situations in which she finds herself. At the heart of it, I liked her character and wanted the best for her.

Emmigration has once again become commonplace among my generation but it is only when you read something like this that you realise how much better things are now for those who are forced to leave the country in search of work. Once Eilis left on the long boat trip, suffering terrible seasickness, which gave way to awful homesickness once she arrived in New York, there was no certainty that she would ever see her mother or sister again.
Born in 1955 in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland. The second youngest of five children, Colm Tóibín graduated from University College in Dublin in 1975. He then headed to Barcelona, the city that later inspired his first novel, The South, and the non-fiction work Homage to Barcelona, both published in 1990. During the 1980s, he worked as a journalist, first in Ireland and then in Argentina, the Sudan and Egypt.
The letters in which she felt unable to unburden her sadness for fear or them worrying about her, were hearbreaking and makes me so glad that air travel is so much cheaper these days.
Colm Tóibín’s works often depict Irish society. He is the author of several works of fiction, including The Heather Blazing (1992), The Story of the Night (1996) and The Blackwater Lightship (1999), which was on the short list for the Booker Prize. The New York Times named his 2004 novel, The Master, one of the 10 most notable books of the year.
This is a book of unfortunate circumstances filled with longing for another outcome and racked with difficult decisions. That being said, I found it absorbing and really enjoyed it as a whole. Business Businesses warned to get ready for eDay The National Payments Plan (NPP) is warning businesses that Government departments, local authorities and other State agencies will stop sending and receiving cheques from businesses from 19 September 2014 or e-Day. e-Day is an important part of the NPP plan to reduce costs and improve cash-flow in the Irish economy. e-Day was launched in September last year, to give businesses and public sector bodies 12 months to prepare for the smooth transition to electronic payments. Cheque usage has halved in Ireland since 2005 but Irish businesses still write 33 million cheques every year. Early stage medical treatments and devices - invented at the Mayo Clinic in the US - are to be developed into ready for market products by Irish academic institutions under a new agreement. It is hoped the five year plan will lead to the setting up of 10 new spin-out companies and the creation of dozens of jobs. For the past 150 years, the non-profit Mayo Clinic in the US has been a world leader in medical treatment and research. But according to the clinic, developing a good idea from early stage basic research into a ready for market product is expensive and difficult to fund in the US. The Taoiseach witnessed the signing of an agreement that will see the Mayo Clinic partner with Enterprise Ireland, which has an established commercialisation fund and expertise in the area. The clinic will hand over 20 promising ideas for new medical technologies and Enterprise Ireland will provide €12m in funding and experts in universities and academic institutions here to develop them for market. The first project - a device for treating acute pancreatitis - is already being developed at NUI Galway according to RTÉ News. It is hoped the unique partnership will lead to the creation of 10 spin-out companies, and as a consequence the creation of dozens of jobs.

Kickboxing Fight Night for Breast Cancer Two students from IT Blanchardstown hosted an Intervarsity Kickboxing Fight Night for breast cancer with all proceeds of the night going to the charity. The fight night consisted of students from all over the country as far away as Derry, Sligo and Cork, with local students from IT Tallaght and Blanchardstown also taking part on the night. We spoke with manager Colin Hawkins a few days after the teams historic first win ever against Longford Town at Tallaght Stadium.

On a personal level how have you adapted to your new role? It’s all good, I’m really enjoying it and settled in now. It was great to also get to work with the Under 19s for the end of their season and to see them claim the runners up spot. I’m lucky as well that I’ve such a great staff to work with Noel White, Jamie Moore, Richie Fitzgibbon, kit man Sean Moran and strength and conditioning coach Shane O’Kelly.

55 How has the attitude been from the other teams in the division, has there been any resentment shown against you guys so far? No it’s been fine, no complaints. The only game where anything was said was the Shels match. It was the only game so far where we’ve used three first team players with Karl Sheppard, Robert Bayly and Rob Cornwall all starting. Well I’d know a few people at Shels to talk to and they let it be known they weren’t happy and asked me why we decided to play them in that particular match. It was just the way things worked out with the timetable. Well in the end we didn’t win so it just goes to show you I suppose! We have no worries about any of the players we pick because they are all guys with the right mentality.
I know it’s probably not fair to pick out players at this early stage but which of lads have really impressed you so far? As I was saying earlier I’ve been impressed with the whole lot of them as a squad and their performances have been noticed by Trevor as three of them were called up this week for the second leg of the Dundalk semi final; Daniel Purdy, who has been excellent so far and has contributed really well with four goals already; Alan Kehoe and Sean Heaney. All three have a great chance. As well as the lads called up I think Chris Lyons has been excellent,

We didn’t like conceding off a set piece so late so we went away and worked really hard, we had four good sessions in between the Wexford and Longford games and the lads responded in the right way. I think anyone who watched both games could see the work they had put in.
Have there been any down sides so far?
Tallaght has a huge population and I’d like to get the message out there to get more of the fans at the First Division games.
Finally Colin have you been impressed with the quality of the First Division? Yes I have, it’s a very young league, and we’re young ourselves so the lack of experience is not really an issue. The two teams who have impressed me most so far have been Longford and Shelbourne. I put it out there before the season started that we are in the league to win it and that hasn’t changed. Who was your favourite player when you were a kid? I was a Manchester United fan so Peter Schmeichel was my favourite player when I was very young because I used to be a goal keeper. My goalkeeping career finished after we got beat 8-0 v Dodder! It was the first time we played in full sized goals, which was ridiculous. It’s much better for small children nowadays playing with the small 7 a side goals. When I got older it was Roy Keane. I wouldn’t be as much of a United fan as I got older but it’s a bit more interesting now they’re not winning as much!

Simon Madden has made a great start to his second spell with Rovers, contributing impressively to the teams defending as well as the attacking. We spoke to the man from Old Bawn about his first few months back at Rovers. On a personal level you’ve made a great start to the season, you must be happy with your performances? Yes I’m delighted it’s gone well on a personal level and the team has been good as well. It’s only early days yet but some of the performances have been very good so far. Obviously there’s things we need to work on as well but overall there’s a lot of positives to take. We’ve improved since that first game against Derry at home. To be fair I wouldn’t have read too much into that result, it was the first time we’d played together and you could tell.

How have things changed since the last time you were with Rovers?
There’s been a lot of changes since I was here, I’ve changed and the club has changed. It’s a much younger squad with all the players keen to take their opportunity, everyone wants to do really well.
Hopefully we can keep a few more clean sheets but we’re creating the chances.
When you were younger were you a League Of Ireland fan?
I didn’t really watch it when I was young, I was more a fan of the English Premier League. Then when I went to England I didn’t really keep up to date The last time I was here I with it. Obviously since I’ve probably didn’t get the chance came back I’ve huge interest, I I deserved. I started off well think the league has improved but I was a younger player and made a few mistakes. Highlight of your career so far? Winning the FAI Cup with Derry City in 2012 beating Pats 3-2 in an exciting game is definitely the highlight of my career so far. Hopefully there’ll be a few more days like that with Rovers in the future.
Do you think the standard in the League Of Ireland is improving? Yes I think so, everyone is getting better but I still think we need more full time teams. I know that’s not easy with the attendances but it’s the only way the league will really improve but I think it’s going in the right direction. It’s a tough league, very competitive and quite unpredictable at times. I think Keith Fahey coming back to play in it, as well as Stephen McPhail with us, is brilliant because it shows that it’s a good league,

57 neither of those two players would be coming back to play here if it wasn’t. I think it’s great as well because it gives the league a higher profile which may help bring in bigger crowds.
Would you like to see more ex internationals come home to play in the League Of Ireland? Absolutely I think it would be brilliant for both the fans and the players here. Hopefully we’ll see a bit more of that, I know Duffer was talking recently about coming back, I would love to see it.
What are your thoughts on Rovers entering a B team in the First Division?
Simon Madden they’ve finished playing or if it doesn’t work out. It would be great if the government had some kind of scheme for young players to encourage them to stay here a bit longer. The league would benefit hugely and the clubs would as well.
What’s it been like working with Stephen McPhail? He’s a great player, a good lad to have around and a great pro so it’s been brilliant. For all of us it’s great to get to work with him but for the younger lads it’s a big bonus. They can learn from him what it takes to make it at the very top and how to go about your business.
After the Bohs victory the manager compared you to Dani Alves, what did you think of that? I always laugh when I get compared to someone like that, it’s a different world to the one I live in! I wouldn’t mind having his money though, I’ll tell you that! I suppose he’s not a bad player to be compared to, it could be worse!
Finally Simon how do you see the race for the championship developing over the next few months?
I think it’s going to be very tight. Sligo are struggling but I think they’ll improve, I wouldn’t be writing them off yet. Cork were good against us in the game down there but I think 0-3 was a bit harsh, we’ll see if they can keep the momentum going. Dundalk have looked good That is the way I play, the way and Pats will be there or there I like to play. I do my defensive abouts but it is very early and work, but if I can help out by we just need to concentrate on setting up something at the other end then even better. I do our own performances at the enjoy setting up goals for others. minute.
I think it’s a great idea, other countries do it so if it’s good enough for them why not? It’s great for the young players to get to play proper competitive football and hopefully the club will benefit as well with some of them coming through to the first team in the next few years.
You went to England to sign for Leeds United when you were 16, do you think some lads would be better off staying in Ireland till they were a bit older? Personally I’d stay, I think I was too young. Everyone is different but I think young Irish players might be better off staying and getting an education first before leaving because it’s gives them something to fall back when

RUA RED Hi all, Easter already? It seems like yesterday we were dusting off the Christmas tree and decking the halls! The Easter break is a long one we know, so we have lots of stuff planned over the coming weeks to keep everybody grand and busy, we have some ideas below. We’ve also started preparations for our next big launch – our two Dublin Dance Festival exhibitions open on May 2nd, Without and Dance With Camera and we also have a programme of scheduled talks around dance and collaboration. SONAS is the new name for our flourishing over 55s programme here at RUA RED! Come along to our monthly meetings after the O55s Film showing at 1.30pm, occurring this month on Tuesday the 29th of April.
SONAS Dance and Discussion
A unique opportunity to watch a performance in rehearsal, get involved ask questions and offer feedback. A great follow-on event from Ríonach Ní Néill’s dance class and a chance to see behind the curtain of a performance on Tuesday April 22nd, at 12.30pm – and this event is free.
O55s Film
Our over 55s film this month is A Night At the Opera, the Marx Brothers’ classic film. The film takes place at 11am in our performance area and the very reasonable ticket price of €4 includes tea or coffee after the film also. This month’s showing is on Tuesday the 29th of April.
Drawing Table
The RUA RED Drawing Table has become something of a staple now in our programme. Run by our resident artist Jim Cathcart and artist Katy Palmieri, these free drop-in workshops have become a community all in themselves here twice a month. Aimed at any drawing ability the Table offers a brilliant forum to sit down and experience a relaxed drawing environment with like-minded people while under the guidance of our resident artists. Open Mic Night
It’s Open Mic Night again! After the amazing success of our last one we’ve decided to host another Open Mic Night for April taking place on Friday, April 25th at 7pm. Anybody looking to take part in this or any future Open Mics are asked to contact us at 01-451 5860.
Bealtaine Festival
This May we also have several special free events taking place for the Bealtaine Festival, celebrating creativity as we age. This year’s theme is ‘And catch the heart off guard’, a phrase from Seamus Heaney’s poem Postscript. As part of this programme we will have It’s Only Me and the Others – self portraits in visual arts and performance is a special event presented by Tallaght Community Arts, DoubleTAKE Artists Studio and performance group Doors to Elsewhere. Joining up with young performers from Dominic’s
Community Centre, together they will create an event that will combine individual art works with dramatic monologues to take the audience on a journey to challenge being ‘just me’ and how we all get to be a part of ‘the others’ in our daily lives. This special event will take place May 9th at 2pm and is free. See the opposite page for more information on our workshops.
Taster Drama and Production workshops – May 10th and May 17th RUA RED’s 2014 Theatre Associates, ChalkTalk Theatre Company, are running two taster Drama workshops this May. The workshops will be a great introduction to theatre language/skills through drama games and exercises for ages 14 – 18. We have a limited number of places on these workshops with places sure to fill quickly, so make sure and book your place now. Places are €10 per session or €18 for both, with the May 10th event running from 1pm – 5pm and the May 17th event from 2.30pm – 6pm. Writers’ Corner THE TRIP TO TALLAGHT By Avril O’Reilly
Kathleen and her granny, Nan Knowles, were on the train from Cork to Dublin for a shopping trip. They were going there to buy First Holy Communion gifts for the Dublin cousins, Declan and Sally. Declan and Sally were making their Communions on the same day as Kathleen. The cousins’ school and Kathleen’s school had picked a date to avoid a clash with the One Direction concert. Unfortunately they clashed with each other. Nan Knowles wanted to send very nice presents to the cousins. “Are we going to Brown Thomas on Grafton Street?” asked Kathleen. “Indeed we are not” said Nan. “Sure, why would we do that when we have BTs in Cork? We’re going to the Square in Tallaght.” They got off to a flying start in Pandora buying a silver charm bracelet for Sally. The assistant showed them how you chose the colour of your bracelet and then added whatever charms you liked. They picked an angel, a bible and a cross plus a tiny white dress and a Murano glass bead. “That’s Sally done now.” said Nan happily. “Can you show me what you have for boys, please?”. Pandora did not have boys’ jewellery so Nan and Kathleen made their way to Koko. Nan
explained they were looking for Communion gifts. “Is it for you?” the assistant asked Kathleen “We have some lovely white earrings”. Kathleen shook her head. She wanted to get her ears pierced but the problem was her baby bothers Tommy and Teddy. If Kathleen got her ears pierced then Tommy and Teddy would want piercings as well, noses probably. They were too young for piercings so Kathleen had to wait. The girl showed them holy medals in he shape of the chalice. Some were on chains and some were on a stretch of ribbon “Fabulous” said Nan, “but I’d better check if anyone else is getting him the medal. She rang Kathleen’s Aunt Majella to find out. “Oh dear” she said. “He’ll be wearing his Dad’s medal”. They bought some white flower earrings for Sally and they carried on shopping. In Easons they found pink rosary beads for Sally . They also got her a picture frame from Hallmark, a bracelet from Claires, a little statue of a girl in white from H.Samuel and a bag of sweets from the Olde Sweet Shoppe. They sat down on a bench and surveyed their purchases. “Nan we have six things for Sally and nothing for Declan.” pointed out Kathleen. Nan looked worried
60 “I’ll ring Majella again.” she said picking up the phone. Kathleen could hear Nan saying “But isn’t that illegal? And it’s not really a keepsake.” Nan hung up. “What’s in the dog comes out in the pup.” she said shaking her head. “He’s just like his mum. Apparently Declan only likes money and his favourite thing is scratchcards. Your Aunt Majella was the same. If I put too much food in her lunchbox she used to sell it. She knows the value of a slice of quiche, that one!” They headed up to Level Three for food and inspiration. “What about that shop?” asked Kathleen. “Well,” said Nan “I don’t think Newbridge Silver will have anything for boys but I’d like to try on their Maureen O’Hara range. Let’s go in”. Twenty minute later they returned triumphant. “What a lovely, helpful girl!” said Nan. Nan’s wheelie bag was getting heavy now but they had solved the Declan problem. He was getting a Vintage Car Money bank. Kathleen had a Prayer Book Trinket Box and a Maureen O’Hara cross pendant. Nan had two more picture frames. “You’ll go in one and the twins can go in the other. I think we’ve done very well.” They hopped on the Luas and headed for home.
