Focus On ABBERLEY COURT COMPLEX

The Abberley Court Hotel and Complex is the only place to be over the next few weeks for all your World Cup needs. Located just off the Belgard Road. It’s nestled within the heart of Tallaght. The staff will be placing their bets on a Brazilian win in Brazil this summer and will be getting into the festive spirit by wearing the colours of Brazil which is their adoptive country for the tournament. They will be decked out from head to toe in Brazillian socks, shorts and the jerseys, so you certainly won’t feel uncomfortable if you show up in your own colours of choice. They will be showing every game live, all 32 countries. The beer garden which caters for up to 150 people will also be one of the main attractions of the Abberley as we head into the month of June, hopefully with some Brazilian weather!

Manager Tony McCabe explained to us what the public are to expect “Last year the response to our beer garden was fantastic, we were delighted by it so this year it is only going to get bigger and better.” Weather permitting there will also be entertainment in the beer garden including bongo players, the BBQ and also a screen outside for the games “You can sit outside in the sun all day, sip your mojito, and enjoy the game. Kick back and just enjoy it”. One of the deals to look forward to will be their 2 for 1 deal on mojitos on the evenings Brazil are playing. Everything you need is all under the one roof. Hungry? Don’t worry, The Kitchen is an exciting gourmet experience with high quality fresh food served daily from 12 noon right up till 9pm by award winning chef Jimmy Dunne and his expert team.

There will also be something for those who may not be football fanatics but want to get in on the spirit of things. Nightclub Entourage just next door will have a number of promotions on during the games to appeal to everyone. They will be offering discount entry on some of the big nights for those who have come to see the games. Also on the weekends they will continue to have live music with the screens on in the background. So as they say, there is literally something for everyone this World Cup at the Abberley Complex.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get into the carnival spirit at The Abberley Court Complex Tallaght. For more details check them out on Facebook.

The Riptide Movement

the other great Irish bands.

INTERVIEW

How did All Works Out end up on the FĂĄilte Ireland ad?

By Padraig Conlon

The Riptide Movement, a four piece indie rock band from Lucan, have suddenly broken into the big-time. Founded in 2006, the childhood friends have shown an insatiable appetite for their work and a dedication which is both admirable and heroic. These lads have done it the hard way. After releasing debut album What About The Tip Jars? in 2009 the band took to busking on the streets of Dublin to help get their music out there. Another album, Keep on Keeping On followed in 2012 and with it came more attention. In the last two years they’ve toured across Ireland, the UK, Europe, the US, Russia and India, played The Late Late Show twice, supported The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park, and performed with a 70-piece orchestra for the BBC. Then last March came a brand new deal with record company giant Universal. Since then their third album Getting Through has hit number number one, WKH žUVW VLQJOH RII WKH DOEXP All Works Out has also reached number one and scored them a lucrative deal as the song in the new FĂĄilte Ireland ad campaign. The video for the track, which

18

stars actress Amy Huberman, has also caused quite a stir. InTallaght Magazine was lucky enough to be invited by the lads to watch them rehearse ahead of their nationwide tour this month and have a chat with Mal Tuohy (vocals), Gar Byrne (drums, vocals), Ger McGarry (bass, harmonica, vocals) and JP Dalton (lead guitar, vocals).

Congratulations on what has been an amazing year so far, you guys must be buzzing, everything you’ve worked so hard for over the past eight years seems to be falling into place? Garry: Thanks very much, yes this is where we’ve been trying to get for years now, it’s all here so we don’t know what to do with ourselves, we’re really

enjoying it all. The song has taken on a life of its own now and it’s all helped give the band D KLJKHU SURžOH LWÂśV DOO RYHU the radio as well which is so important. Mal: The last two years have been very good for us, last year we did Glastonbury, supported the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park, wrote the album and then we got to go into Grouse Lodge Studios and record it with one of the founder members of Flogging Molly, Ted Hutt who’s an amazing producer. And this year it’s just all kicked on. We signed with Universal in March which was great because deals like that are pretty rare nowadays for rock n roll bands. It’s great not just for us but Irish music in general, there’s so many great bands here and the light has been turned on them now as well. Hopefully the labels will come over and check out all

Mal: They heard it on The Late Late Show and they contacted the label and it just happened like that. It’s their biggest ad campaign in four years, three million euro I think they’re spending on the whole campaign. It’s worked out well for us. The album was doing pretty well anyway and the single came after it. The album ZHQW WR QXPEHU RQH LQ LWV žUVW week and then the single did as well. From that then radio started playing it a lot. I think it’s been in the top 10 of the radio FKDUWV IRU WKH ODVW žYH ZHHNV but then this ad came in and it’s just made it bigger and bigger. Then of course came the video with Amy Humberman which has brought the song even more attention.

Did Universal try to get you to change much after you signed? Mal: No they didn’t, the album and the artwork on the album, which was done by Gar’s girlfriend, had already been done and they said they were delighted with that, they said they were delighted with everything. The only thing they said was they wanted us to get our hair cut! We were all due a haircut anyway! That was the only small change they wanted. Universal are amazing to work with, they’ve really got behind the album, we love working with them.

THIS IS WHERE WE’VE BEEN TRYING TO GET FOR YEARS NOW, IT’S ALL HERE SO WE DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH OURSELVES

[BUSKING] WAS A GREAT WAY TO START BECAUSE YOU GET TO PLAY YOUR OWN TUNES

21

The Riptide Movement

So take us back to the start, how did The Riptide Movement get together?

Gerry: We all grew up in Lucan and we all went to school quite close to each other, myself and J were in school together and Mal and Gar went to the school a stone’s throw away. We all knew each through mutual friends as well. It’s great for a band to start like that because we know each other so well and that helps with creating the music. There are no egos in the band. Well there’s one big ego!

So who’s got the big ego? Gerry: JP without a doubt! JP: No I don’t! Gerry: Yeah you do! He’s gets all the female attention and he doesn’t even drive the van. We’ve worked out that at this stage he owes us 8,000 hours driving time! JP: 8,000 hours?! I thought it was 8,000 kilometers! I won’t have that paid off till I’m 50!

As a band you’ve never been scared of hard work and spent many years busking on Grafton Street? Gerry: Yes we did, it was a great way to start because you get to play your own tunes, which we were always happy to do. It’s also a good way to get a few extra bob, to bring in extra revenue. On a Saturday Grafton Street is packed, thousands of people walk up and down that street. They’d buy albums, we knew what songs to play for the crowds, we’d play for a solid

žIWHHQ PLQXWHV WKUHH VRQJV WKH žUVW RQH EHLQJ Thieves In The Gallery. It was the hook or the bait – people were drawn in. They’d stop in their tracks and the crowd would build. Then we’d kick into the second song, Keep On Keepin’ On. We’d have a huge audience at this stage and everyone’s attention. It really felt like something big was going down, a full on street festival. By song three, Hot Tramp, it was complete madness with people of all ages dancing, clapping and singing. The idea was to just give them a taste, leave them wanting more. Then we’d stop playing; this way we could turn a new crowd every 15 minutes, DQG WKH &'V ZRXOG Âż\ RXW :H once sold 222 albums in just two hours! That would happen IRU žYH VL[ KRXUV :H GLG LW RQ St Patrick’s Day one year which was absolutely mental. We went out the morning after Oxygen another year as well because we had to pay for studio time, and other bills. We had to do it. JP: It was great and it worked for us. We had people from all over the world, America, Russia, India, Australia buying the album which was great because it helped get our music out to a wider audience.

Was that how you ended up playing in India and Russia a few years ago? JP: Yes, it was a college in Delhi

that invited us over, it was an amazing experience. We weren’t sure if they were going to get it but after three or four songs they were loving it! I ended up FURZG VXUžQJ DQG DOO ,W ZDV great aul craic and we’d love to do it again.

You must be one of the žUVW ,ULVK URFN Qœ UROO bands to play in India?

Mal: Yeah I think we were, I remember Hotpress tried to žQG LI DQRWKHU EDQG IURP KHUH had played in India and they FRXOGQÂśW žQG DQ\ ,WÂśV D ZHLUG one I suppose but it was a great experience for us. JP: The gigs in Russia went down really well as well. Sure that’s music isn’t it? It really is the universal language. Gerry: Russia was great but it was f*ckin’ freezing! We were in a place called Belgorod, near Ukraine. The man who owns the venue had bought our album on Grafton Street. To be fair he loves Irish bands, he’s had a few over there already. The venue is like an Irish pub that was dropped in the middle of Russia, if you walk out the door you think “F*ck me I thought I was in Ireland!â€? I got roped in to bringing over 15 Clonakilty black puddings for him! It looked bad when I was going through customs, it looked like I was trying to smuggle pudding into Russia! Mal: We played in New York last September as well and we’re going back there again this September to play a festival. America went great, we sold out in New York and we’d never played there before. We also played the Viper Rooms in LA which was a good buzz.

Congratulations on Getting Through, it’s a wonderful album, very uplifting and positive, a bit like you lads really! Mal: Cheers thank you, yeah we’ve always been positive SHRSOH ,WÂśV WKH žUVW WLPH ZHÂśYH

The Riptide Movement made a record that captures the energy of our live shows. JP: Ted Hutt’s someone we’ve always admired, so we sent him a few songs with a note asking, ‘Would you be interested in producing the album?’ and straight away he got back to us going, ‘Yeah, when and where do you want me?’ Day one in Grouse Lodge we knew we’d got our man because he was so enthusiastic and keen to try different things. He had this brilliant way of taking you to one side and saying, ‘That’s good… but I know you can do even better!’

Who writes the songs? Gerry: Mal is the main lyricist but we all work on the melodies, it’s a real band thing which is great. Mal: Everyone is involved in making the songs which is a great way to do it. It works well for us. Basically we just want to be always improving and working on the live show, when something works, we go for it.

The video for All Works Out is an amazing piece of work, how did it all come about? Gerry: Universal told us they had a guy who was really good at videos, Thomas Heffernan is his name, and they got us to meet up. We met him and his idea really struck a cord with us and we were only delighted to get to work with him on it. When we saw the cast list with Amy Huberman and Paul Ronan we were like what the f*ck! We thought we were seeing things. We knew that Amy and Brian were fans of the band, i think they were at one of our Vicar Street shows and Paul’s a sound lad as well, great craic. The whole cast were brilliant, it’s a great video, we’re really proud of it.

What do you think of the Irish music scene at the moment? Mal: The current music scene in Ireland is thriving, there’s a

whole wave of bands coming through, there’s so many, I don’t want to leave anyone out.… we listen to Sive, Preachers Son, Storyfold, Ham Sandwich, the Hot Sprockets, the Raglans, Hosier, BellX1, Little Green Cars, the Strypes, Kodaline and The Minutes, most of them have an album coming out this year and I can’t wait to hear them.

Where’s your favourite venue to gig? Mal: Whelan’s ‘cause it’s where we started off, it’s where all Irish bands start, it’s the life blood of the live Irish music scene, The Olympia and Vicar St are the next step up on the ladder as a musician both are amazing venues, even though they both hold 1500 people it feels like an intimate gig and the atmosphere is electric.

Is it true that Bob Dylan played your second album for The Rolling Stones and that’s how

22

you got picked to support them?

Mal: Yes supposedly someone gave him a copy when he played at the London Fleadh and he passed it on to the Stones, which was very sound of him. Hopefully we’ll get to thank him in person for getting to play what was a very historic gig, the ¾UVW WLPH WKH 6WRQHV KDG SOD\HG Hyde Park since 1969.

Did you get to meet any of The Stones? Mal: We met Charlie Watts, he was sound.

Finally lads what are your plans for the rest of the year? Gar: World domination! Mal: Touring, festivals and we’re bringing out another single pretty soon, and a new video as well. The album is going to be released in the UK and America so we’ll be playing there.

June Rodgers it and can’t wait for everyone to see it.

INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon

Was taking your show nationwide something that has been on your mind for a while? No it was only after Christmas, after my shows in the Red Cow, many of the people who travel up from the country to see me kept saying “when are you going to come down the country with it?”

Local comedienne, singer and actress June Rodgers celebrates over 20 years in showbiz this summer by taking her show around WKH FRXQWU\ IRU WKH YHU\ ¾UVW WLPH Now well established as one of Ireland’s top entertainers June DOVR VWDUV LQ WKH ¾OP Mrs Browne’s Boys D’Movie which is out this month. We met up with her for a very entertaining chat about this new chapter in her career, her schooldays with Bono and her love for performing and making people laugh.

How are preparations going for the big tour? They’re going very well, this is WKH ¾UVW QDWLRQZLGH WRXU ,¶YH done so I’m very excited, it’s a huge amount of work because in total there’s 16 people travelling with the show; all the singers, dancers and technical people. It’s a huge production, it’s not just a stand up comedy show, it’s a variety show for ages 12 to 112! I have about 20 costume changes and the dancers are

pretty much the same. It’s all about trying to change the picture every few minutes, that’s what I’m doing in the show, it’s very fast moving. It’s going to have a real 80’s theme, because everyone loves the 80’s. Everyone from Boy George to Cher to Tina Turner is in it, played by me! There’s something there for everyone. The choreography is done by Ciaran Connolly who’s worked with One Direction and Robbie Williams. I’m really happy with

just put out the door to play. So that’s what we did, we sat on the wall looking at the tractors! Then as the years went by we sat on the wall looking at the Guards next door! When the hormones kicked in, we’d be eyeing them up! Tallaght was a lovely place to grow up in the 60’s, our back door was always open, and everyone knew everyone.

I still see people around that I know from Tallaght village which is great, in my mind I still think I’m 18, even though I don’t look it! I have such good memories We had such a great response to from the village and the people, the shows at Christmas I thought really good people. “I’m going to give it a go.” Pat Egan, the promoter, came to see Of course you still live the show and loved it and said in the area. because it’s a family show you FDQ GH¾QLWHO\ JR RQ WRXU ZLWK LW Yes I do, when we moved out of and it’ll do very well. We’re not going all over the country; we’re the village we bought this old going to certain venues and see cottage in Firhouse which is 115 years old and all granite. My how we get on. It’s been doing really well booking wise so far. If Dad and I had bought it after LW JRHV ZHOO , ZLOO GH¾QLWHO\ ORRN my Mam passed away, it needed a lot of work, but sadly my Dad into doing it again. didn’t live long enough to move into it but my husband Peter and Did growing up I are there now. I didn’t move in Tallaght Village too far away!

LQ¿XHQFH \RXU FRPHG\"

I think it was my family really, my Mam and Dad. My Dad had a very good sense of humour and I suppose growing up as kids we didn’t have TV, you’d have to entertain yourself, and my parents used to have a lot of people coming to the house for parties where there’d be a lot of story telling going on, and I think that’s where it all started. There’d also be a lot of singing, everyone would have to get up and sing a song or a party piece. I didn’t go to any drama schools or anything when I was young, we didn’t know of any, you were

Did you always have a burning ambition to work in showbiz? No not at all, it was only when I was working in Fujitsu Electronics on the Greenhill’s Road and they went in for the John Players Tops which was a national variety show competition. I just joined up for something to do; I was stuck in the back row swaying! It was through that I met Tom Roche and Martin Higgins who started writing for me. Sadly Tom is no longer with us but Martin still

After doing the John Player Tops I went in for a talent competition in Clontarf Castle and the night RI WKH žQDO *D\ %\UQH ZDV LQ WKH audience and he loved what I did. By the following Friday I was on the Late Late Show, which I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be on! It was the most nerve wracking experience of my life! Live television with no safety net and I went out in my Irish dancing costume! It went down fantastic so then on the back of that I got gigs doing warm ups for other acts and I just kept getting more work and it went from there.

Is it true you were in school with Bono? Yes it is, he was in my class. At the time he was just a hormonal teenager and I knew him as Paul Hewson. We were in the same class for four years in St Patricks Cathedral before he went to Mount Temple. It was wonderful to see how his career took off and of course he always mentions me in interviews! I haven’t bumped into him since, my sister has met him a few times and he has said he’s followed my career. I’ve done a few interviews in the past and some of the headlines made it sound as if I spent my schooldays out the back of the bicycle sheds with Bono! Which I never said!

You have done some žOPV LQ WKH SDVW DQG star in the soon to be

released Mrs Brownes Boys D’Movie, do you enjoy working on movies? I do because it’s something different and I love working with Brendan, he’s been so good to me down the years. Being on set with him is just brilliant because he treats everyone the same, you could be cleaning the toilets or starring in the lead is doesn’t matter to him because everyone is treated exactly the same. He’s just a really nice down to earth man, he deserves all the success he gets. I did Agnes Brown with him as well with Angelica Huston which was amazing. Angelica and a lot of the cast came back to my house one night for a big sing song, which was great craic, she really was lovely, so nice. I got to work with Robbie Coltrane on a movie a few years ago and it was a great experience as well because I love Robbie, he’s always been a hero.

What comedians have inspired you? I love Dawn French, Dara O’Brian. I worked with Dara when he was starting out on Echo Island and we used to have great aul craic. It’s great to see his success. Dave Allen, a great Tallaght person, my mother would have known him, he was fantastic. I love a lot of the 70’s comedy like The Two Ronnies, the writing was just unbelievable.

What would be the highlight of your career so far?

June Rodgers There’s been a few, probably having my own show. I never ever thought I would have my own show, that people would want to come and see me. I think it’s a great achievement for someone who grew up with no training whatsoever. It just goes to show that if you follow your dreams they can come true.

If you could work with anyone who would it be? I absolutely love Imelda May, I’ve met her a few times and she’s so lovely, I’ve such respect for her and I’m delighted to see her do so well. She’s so down to earth, so normal, her family come to my show every year, I’d love to perform with her.

Finally June when you look back on your career what is a funny story that springs to mind? , UHPHPEHU RQH RI WKH žUVW times I ever did panto, it was Cinderella in The Gaiety, over 20 years ago now and myself and Eileen Reid, who was a legend of cabaret, were playing the ugly sisters. Well

New Look Hosted A Fantastic Charity Event In Aid Of Aoibheann’sPinkTie

New Look this week invited the public along to a day and night of fashion and fun, for one great cause. Elaine Freer manager of New Look explained to us why the charity event went ahead "Aoibheann’s Pink Tie is a charity set up by Aoibheann’s dad, she sadly passed away from cancer. What they do is raise money for all the families of the children on St Johns ward in Crumlin hospital. We chose the charity because it's a good cause".

The day of fund raising saw face painting early on with a snake charmer out in the centre mall with photo opportunities for all, followed by the main event. The store held the fashion show from 7pm which saw 20% off everything in store for people in attendance on the night. If that wasn't enough the lucky customers that came along got treated to a bake sale and a pampering session. The day and evening was enjoyed by all and saw money raised for an excellent cause.

THE STONEY BROKES Something Irrelevant Something Irrelevant, is a ten track album by a band that seem like veterans to me at this stage as I happen to know them personally from way back.

Something Irrelevant is not too caked in distortion or aggressive drumming, but has a myriad of diversity, and shows not only a different creative output to The Stoney Brokes, but it gives credence to any hype or rumour you’ve heard about Amy Kelly’s vocals. She completely separates herself from the good and the great, and places herself onto a platform built only for mesmerising voices. With a reputation for catchy melodic hooks I feel like the boys have not let me down with this one. The song is a feel-good, positive anthem for young love and it could be the perfect soundtrack for a summer romance. The orchestral sounds in the song and the storyline in the video, makes for a very cinematic experience. The video has just been picked up by MTV Latin America. Tech AND THE BEAT GOES ON By Colm O’Muirí

Apple is close to acquiring Beats Electronics the headphone manufacturer and song streaming service which was founded by rapper and producer Dr. Dre. If the purchase of Beats goes through what will this mean for the future of music streaming services? The sale looks a mere formality at this stage with Dr. Dre himself posting a video, with Tyrese Gibson in which he states he ZLOO EH ÂłWKH žUVW ELOOLRQDLUH in Hip-Hopâ€?, Dre has since removed the post.

Beats is one of the more popular choices of headphones in Ireland and they are known for their heavy emphasis on bass. However it is not for their headphones and other audio products that Apple wants to purchase Beats, it is because of their music streaming service. Beats Music, their streaming service, is yet to launch in Ireland but at the moment to purchase it in America it will cost you $14.99 per month on D PD[LPXP žYH GHYLFHV 7KDW LV MXVW XQGHU ð IRU IXOO XVH ZKHUHDV 6SRWLI\ FRVWV ð a month. Spotify is undoubtedly the reason why Apple hope to takeover Beats; because they want to become the number one music streaming service. Spotify is a Swedish based company that launched in 2008, who have contracts with some

of the biggest labels in music including Sony, Warner Music, EMI and Universal music to stream their content. Spotify and other streaming services, are a whole different way to pay for digital music than purchasing an album or single in the Apple iTunes store, which is why the purchase of Beats is imperative for Apple to at the top of the music game. Streaming services have come under heavy criticism from musicians with people able to listen to their songs for virtually nothing and the artist receiving nothing in return. However with the price that a new album costs today I can see why people wonder why I still purchase music as opposed to getting it off Spotify, iTunes or downloading it for free.

It is just a matter of time until CDs will go out of production and alternative ways of buying music like iTunes and Spotify will take over. Paddy Moore

Around this time HLJKW\ žYH \HDUV DJR Shamrock Rovers signed a little 19 year old lad from Ballybough who would go on to become both a Rovers legend and Ireland’s YHU\ žUVW IRRWEDOO superstar.

That youngster’s name was Paddy Moore, a wonderfully skilful inside right who made the switch from Richmond Rovers after shining as the brightest star in the Dublin youth football scene for the previous three years. Many legends have worn the famous Hooped jersey since then but what follows is the story of WKH žUVW RI WKHP

spellbinding talent he was a larger than life cult hero who was much loved by the public and a man who struggled with an alcohol addiction that would tragically claim his life at the age of 41. A year later he became one of the few players to play for both Ireland and Northern Ireland when he was picked on a combined team to play England in Blackpool. An article from the Irish Independent dated October 11th žYH GD\V EHIRUH WKH JDPH raves about Moore’s ability and how he was one of “only four Free State born men in the team.â€? Following this wonderful feat he was propelled to almost Godlike status in his home town. Exiled in Scotland, his time at Aberdeen was successful, in his three seasons at Pittodrie he scored an impressive 47 goals in 74 games. While at Pittodrie however it appeared he suffered terribly from homesickness. From scanning old newspaper reports from the 1930’s a picture emerges of a larger than life character who played from the heart. In an interview he did with The Irish Press dated 11 January 1935, when he was playing for Aberdeen, he talks of how much he loved and missed his home town. “I’d be much happier if I was back playing in Dublin,â€? he says to the correspondent known only by the name “Socaro.â€? It appears he had still not made it back to his club after an international versus Hungary in Dublin on 16th December, almost four weeks earlier! “Nothing would suit me better than to resume playing in the Free State,â€? he said. “I put on weight very rapidly whenever I’m in Aberdeen, I feel a new PDQ LQ 'XEOLQ DQG , žQG OLIH at home much better for me.â€? He rejoined The Hoops within weeks of giving this interview. During his last two spells at Rovers he was battling alcoholism but he still managed to help the club win trophies and produce some memorable moments on the pitch.

Paddy Moore Ultimately his career wound down in 1942 and following a short stint as manager at Stella Maris he emigrated to England where he tragically died in 1951. In researching this article I was lucky enough to speak with Paddy’s only son Pat. Here’s what he told us. “I have lovely memories of my Dad from when he used to take us out on the street to play football and when he used to take me to Miltown. I was 6 when he died in 1951 so the trips to watch Rovers play would have been in the late 40’s to very early 50’s. He absolutely loved Rovers big time, he was always talking about them even though by that stage it had been over ten years since he’d played for them. They were his team here and he regularly went to watch them play whenever he could. When he’d get to the turnstile he’d just say “Paddy Mooreâ€? and we’d be ushered in for free! I remember well being at a game against Drums in 1950, that used to be a very ELJ ž[WXUH WKHUH was big rivalry between the two

clubs then. I remember a lot about that game, I remember Benny Henderson, who was a big player for them, played because he had an almighty kick on him!

Everyone loved my Dad, he was a great character, a bit of a rebel and a brilliant footballer. When I tell people that my Dad ZDV WKH žUVW SHUVRQ WR score four goals in a World Cup match they don’t believe me, they think I’m making it up!

But he was and that achievement can never be beaten, I’m proud of him and what he accomplished in what was quite a short career really by today’s standards. A bit of his talent must have rubbed off on me because I played as a centre forward myself up to semi professional level. He must have taught me something because I was always a good goal scorer. I still really love football and I’ve been a Wolves fan ever since I listened to their famous match against Moscow Dynamo on our radio in Cabra in 1955! By Padraig Conlon

What do think has been the standout performance so far this season?

I think when we played Bohs away from the point of view of the goals we scored and how we passed it around.

Ten years on from the VWDUW RI \RXU ¾UVW VSHOO with Rovers how much has the club changed since 2004?

Jason McGuinness talks to us about the much improved spirit in the camp, the controversial comments from Dermot Keely surrounding the recent Liverpool friendly and how he hopes to grab a few important goals this season. What are your thoughts fans getting nervous on the season up to over recent points dropped at home? now? We’re going well so far, we’re in the pack near the top, and we’re improving all the time. Obviously it was disappointing not to take all three points at home to Bohs but we take the point and move on. On another night we would’ve taken one of those chances near the end and won 1-0.

You missed the game with injury having played every league game up to that, we’re hoping it was nothing serious?

No I just had a slight groin strain and I’ve learned over the years not to take chances if I’m not 100% so it was just more a SUHFDXWLRQ DQG LWV DOO ¾QH QRZ

Having won the title three times already what would you say to

It’s very early doors yet, I never usually talk about the title at this stage in the season. I know it’s a cliché but you do really just have to focus on each game as it comes. We can understand that the fans would like to see us hit teams for three or four but I think that will come. As a defender, a clean-sheet is what I am here to do. A 1-0 win, I will take that every week. That is not a problem for the players and we just have to remain focused. It’s a more competitive league this year with Dundalk, Pats and Cork all starting well but we’re not looking around at other teams this year. We’re just trying to just do what we’re doing and playing to the best of our abilities and improving.

From the outside looking in it seems

there’s a much better spirit in the camp this season compared to last year?

Yes there is, there’s a real togetherness about the squad, we seem to be a close bunch of lads. We all mix together away from football, always eat together and that helps you get to know each other better. Everyone is mixing well, from the young players in the squad to the older lads like myself we all get on great, there’s no cliques, they’re all great lads. I’ve played in other teams where there have been cliques and that is certainly not the case with this squad. I think that was missing last year and it kind of hampered our performances. When the spirit is good like it is this year it makes it enjoyable to go in to training, you look forward to seeing the lads and working hard WRJHWKHU ,W DOVR PDNHV \RX ¾JKW

It’s unbelievable; it’s like the difference between night and day, a different club really. Shamrock Rovers are now an amazingly well run club, the players want for absolutely nothing, we are treated so well. I’ve played for other big clubs but Rovers are the best, it’s all there for us. Fair play to the supporters for getting the club through those tough times, they took two steps back to get the club going in the right direction and now they have the best run club in the league. I don’t think any other club could have got through all that.

When we spoke to Trevor last month he touched on the great support the fans have shown the team this season and how it drives you guys on to perform better?

Absolutely, we appreciate it so much. When we went away to play Derry, which is always a tough place to go, they gave us such great support, they were so noisy throughout the game and that gives the players a lift when things are getting tough on the pitch. You want to do well for them, you want to reward them, you don’t want to let them down.

57 What did you make of Dermot Keeley’s recent remarks where he called the Liverpool fans who went to the recent friendly in the Aviva “morons”?

the B team?

I think it’s a brilliant move by the club and more teams here will be doing it in the future.

When I was a young player starting out at Bohs I was told to go on loan but I wasn’t allowed I think he was well out of order. Finally Jason what have been your happiest moments in a Rovers jersey? I suppose winning the EA and Setanta Cups last year. Winning something with Rovers is very special and I enjoyed winning those cups.

I hope there are more happy moments still to come and we can win the league and a few more cups this season. It won’t be handed to us and we’ree going to have to earn itt ery but I can assure you every single one of the players rs is working really hard on the training pitch every dayy at getting Rovers back to being champions and winningg cups.

Writers’ Corner GOD DIED YESTERDAY By Shane Buckley

Last week I was sitting in the waiting room of a large suit shop. I don’t normally buy suits, I don’t need them, I haven’t got any kind of job that requires me to wear one, I’m not an aspiring bureaucrat ready to take on the DĂĄil or 10 Downing Street. On that day I wasn’t even in the market for a new suit, but was having my old Debs suit tailored for an unfortunate funeral that was quickly approaching. I was sitting there waiting with my legs crossed and thinking ‘all you ever did in this life was wait.’ And then an old buddy of mine walked in wheeling a pram with his two year old kid asleep inside. He looked abhorrently tired and malevolent towards his kid; today’s Irish father was a bipolar one. “Well Ollie,â€? I said, “You’ve seen better days.â€? He sat down. “It’s me bleedin’ ma, Charley.â€? he began “I just haven’t got a second to meself anymore. With the kid constantly pulling at me elbow and me Ma dragging me to church every poxy day!â€? “Hmm...â€? I mumbled, “I didn’t know you liked red wine and crackers?â€? “I don’t; SHE DOES! She goes on like this big dismal Catholic and she’s dragging us all down with her!â€? “So what then, do you want rid of this sanctimonious burden?â€?

“Aw I’d do anything for her to just accept me as an Atheist! “I’ll tell you what... just test her faith, and if she comes up short of wisdom, tell her you’re not convinced anymore and you’re choosing to go with a more philosophical spirituality. “Where are-ye comin’ up with this cr*p, Charley? “I read it in the Atheism For Dummies book. “Oh, alright. What’ll I do then? “Ever hear of Luke’s Temptations in the desert? “Nope. “Not surprised. Don’t worry though. What you do is give her three scenarios that will test her faith, three logical and antiblasphemous ones. Now don’t patronise her. When she comes up short of anything gospel, immediately follow up with how unconvincing it all seems and that you now believe God and his power is dead. She might keel over, but tell her it’s her own fault for being so verbally lethargic and walk out. “Alright, I’ll try it. Thanks Charley! A couple of days ago I found out that my old friend Ollie was now the new anointed assistant bible distributer to the local parish and his son will now be raised as an altar boy.

A WINDOW UNDERGROUND By Shane Buckley

He’s a seven day a week man, But he can’t remember anything. Not a thing. He takes it in, Understands it, Conveys his understanding, But the moment a day full of hours goes by, He forgets everything. He is you and I, He is what you see when you stare near and afar. He does not own the money he makes, He does not control the time he spends, He is our generation, He is the junky and the man falling to the gutter. 6FUDWFK JRHV WKH QDLOV DJDLQVW WKH ¿HVK Gulp goes the alcohol down the neck, You and I will follow him to the sky or to the soil.
