Welcome

Welcome to Edition 55 of InTallaght Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears! In Roman times this was the fifth month of the year and they called it “Quintillius” which means, yes you guessed it, fifth! But the Romans, who couldn’t leave things alone, decided to honor the legend that was Julius Caesar by changing the name of the month to Julius (July) because the big guy had been born on the 12th of the month. So the next time you sing along to that Mundy tune just remember you’re actually really honoring a long dead Roman dictator! The main interview in this edition is with Ballybough lads and all round sound heads O.R.B. (or The Original Rude Boys for all you people who don’t like change!) Since the lads got together three years ago they’ve gone from strength to strength bringing their unique brand of Irish Hip Hop around the world. In the secondary interview we meet the new Mayor Fintan Warfield, a young man with great plans who we look forward to hearing more from during the year of his term in office. As always, all the usual features are to be found in all their usual places as well!

News Luas Turns 10!
TU4 Dublin
10 years ago, on June 30th 2004 the first tram went into service on the Green Line, which itself was 10 years after the idea for a new tram or light rail system for Dublin was suggested in 1994.
Three institutions in the Dublin region – DIT, ITB and ITT - have come together to explore the benefits of structured cooperation and collaboration and to jointly seek designation as a new unitary university, providing educational opportunities that are practice-based and research-informed.
Though our Red Line only opened on September 2004, Luas (which means speed in Irish), celebrated their 10th birthday with free cupcakes at selected stops and an online competition which gave away a daily prize of €1,000 over 10 days. The two tram lines carry 80,000 passengers on average daily.

Beyond the Darkness, by Tallaght man Robert Dowdall, was officially launched this week, in the County Library, by Fair City’s Jim Bartley; and it tells the autobiographical story of a young man whose sight was destroyed in a horrific accident when he was just 18. Determined not to let it also destroy his life, however, Robert went on to achieve more in two decades than many fully-sighted

people do in a lifetime. He’s climbed Kilimanjaro, Everest to base camp, skied tough Austrian slopes, cycled across America and Australia - all for charity - and that’s just to name a few of his achievements. He’s also the first blind practitioner of alternative medicine in Ireland and he wood turns in his spare time.
Dublin’s four local authorities have launched a summer campaign to combat dog fouling. New dog fouling signage across the four local authorities is being launched highlighting the need for owners to cleanup after their dogs. The new signage emphasises the health risks associated with dog fouling, the cost to dog owners who do not clean up after their dogs and appeals to dog owners to “leave only paw prints”.
The book is available now to buy in paperback and eBook or to rent digitally, from the non-fiction section of the Emu Ink library. www.emuink.ie
The campaign shows how committed the four authorities are to working together to address the dog fouling problem.
DIT, ITB and ITT established a formal alliance in October 2011 and since then colleagues from the three institutions have been working together to develop a programme of work which will culminate in the submission of a joint application for designation as a Technological University. ITT currently has a student population of over 4,000 students. In its relatively brief history it has grown in size, stature and in the range and level of the programmes it provides. According to ITT: “The plans to combine ourselves, DIT and ITB are steaming ahead, as are the plans for us to apply for university status.” For more information on the Technological University plans see www.tu4dublin.ie
This year’s TCC Tallafest is being run in conjunction with National Heritage week and there will be a strong leaning towards the Arts, Heritage and history. But the event will combine these elements with an emphasis on fun, family and enjoyment and hopefully the weather will be as kind to us as it was last year. To this end this year’s KIDS ZONE will include many of the great features and artists we had last year and more: the very popular Denis Wiggie will perform with his puppets; storytelling by Tallaght Library which was hugely popular last year; face painting; giant board games; street performers; the Scouts; competitions; fun sports and a magic show. Hooperman will make a star appearance and you can get your photo taken in one of the photo booths. As well as all of these there will be a large range of sports, arts and nature attractions for children. NATURE ZONE will include Birdwatch Ireland providing information and education on our national birds and a bird identification game
for children. The Beekeepers of Ireland will mount a live exhibition showing the fascinating life of bees and honey production, which should interest young and old. The Tree Council of Ireland will also take part and there will be a nature walk with a concentration on trees, which was loved by all that came to it last year. Our Tallaght Person of the Year, Donie Anderson will have his faithful sheep dog give a demonstration of the skills of rounding up sheep and Donie will even shear a few, not to be missed! SPORTS ZONE will be a powerhouse of activities; rugby; volleyball; GAA, kickboxing, soccer, tug o’ war and so much more… ARTS ZONE There will be live street painting and RUA RED will run live events and art activities. There will be
magicians, street entertainers, dance and lots of interactive arts projects. We will also have a famous artist doing workshops with children and adults. Tallaght Youth Band will lead off on the music front and there will also be lots of live music…

From The Inside Out
On June 26th, the performance space at Rua Red was home to the production From The Inside Out, which saw young people from the ages of 14 – 20 take part in a devised theatre and storytelling performance. The young people involved all migrated to Ireland and the performance focused on the experiences they have had along the way. The countries represented were Russia, Poland, Moldova, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana, U.K, U.S.A, Iran, Philippines and Scotland.

Vlad Gurdis who was born in Moldova says he will continue to participate in these productions “I always get involved in these projects, we advertised it quite a bit and we had workshops and we brought loads of people together”. Overall the production was not just entertaining but also educational. The audience members which included the participants family and friends and also members of the general public all thoroughly enjoyed the production, which was met with a large round of applause and a short Q&A in which everyone got involved.

O.R.B.
it doesn’t seem to be anymore. Neddy: Indie/Pop/Rock/Rap! Walshy: You can put so many genres into it but we like to experiment. Neddy: Experimental?! Yeah, experimental that’s what it is! We might have finally found a description of our sound.
INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon
Walshy you’re probably one of the first musicians to ever mix the ukelele with Hip Hop? O.R.B., the artists formally known as The Original Rude Boys continue their meteoric rise just over three years on from their launch. Band members Neddy Arkins, Rob Burch and Sean Walsh are childhood pals from Ballybough who have created a unique sound by mixing elements of Hip-Hop, Indie and Acoustic Rock. Their second studio album All We Are was released to great critical acclaim just two months ago and has already been number one in the iTunes charts. The album also features the massive hit Never Gonna Walk Away, which also hit number one and recently won Song Of The Year at the Meteor Choice Music Awards in February. Their first single Stars in my Eyes was famously recorded at a drinking session in one of the lads houses in March ‘11 and attracted massive attention after one of their friends uploaded a video of them singing it onto YouTube. Since the release of their debut album This Life, O.R.B have toured extensively playing major festivals in the UK and an Australian and European arena tour with The Script in 2013. We met up with Neddy and Walshy a couple of days before the band supported Kanye West in Marley Park.
Thanks very much for meeting us today lads and congratulations on the success of the latest album All We
Are, how’s the response Does the fact that you been so far? have all been friends Neddy: It’s been insane, for years make it easier unbelievable really. The physical to be honest with each other in the studio? version of the album has been the fastest selling album of the year so far in Ireland. The response has been really positive. This was always going to be that album that didn’t sound anything like the first one, we decided we were going to do something different.
Who’s written most of the songs?
Neddy: On this album it’s totally a shared thing, the majority of the songs come about because Walshy will come with a melody, I’d add a lyric and it’ll go back and forth like that really, it’s a shared thing, it’s been really natural like that. It just depends on who writes the best lyric or melody.
Neddy: Ah yeah it does, we all give each other a fair amount of stick so it’s grand to say “That tune is sh*te man!” if we think it is! It’s ok, nobody gets offended. It does help well in the studio though. We all get on really well, we have great craic. We get on better at weekends!
Describe your sound?
Walshy: It’s a hard one to define, and a question we struggle with really! Neddy: We don’t know how to describe it, what do you call it? I don’t know! Walshy: At the start people were saying it’s a mix between singer songwriter and Hip Hop, which
Walshy: Probably but you never know, there’s always someone that’s done stuff before everyone else. Someone probably done it in the 40’s! Neddy: You take that title. He actually invented the ukelele as well!
It must be surreal how far you’ve come as a band in three short years?
Neddy: Yeah it is crazy, we literally don’t get a minute to take it all in or get our head around it. Walshy: Starting out it was like we were thrown in at the deep end. Neddy: That’s exactly what it was like because in our fifth ever gig we went from playing pubs to being on the second main stage at Oxegen. Ever since then it’s been…(makes loud explosion noise!) Walshy: At the start we didn’t even have songs. Well we had maybe three or four songs we had written together. We had literally just started when we put that video out. Neddy: YouTube helped a lot to get our music out there, the younger people done the job for us, they sold it to the people.
we decided we were going to do something different
O.R.B.
18 it’s been mad stuff, there’s been no lull yet, no let up
19
O.R.B. Walshy: That’s a great thing about music today is you don’t need A and R people liking your stuff to get signed, if people like it that’s all that matters, which is the way it should be.
Were you surprised with the initial reaction to the band?
Walshy: Completely because Ned had been doing his own thing, rapping to beats, being very creative, completely different to what anyone else was doing but people didn’t get it, they didn’t understand it, he was always ahead of his time! When the three of us joined up it all just came together, people decided to give us a chance.
How did it happen so quick for you as a band? Neddy: I think at the time the buzz around us was just unreal. Online everyone was talking about us and there wasn’t any up and coming bands at the time that were getting the same buzz so a lot of people started focusing in on what we were doing next. Walshy: Then we got to go on tour with The Script which brought us a lot of attention. It’s been mad stuff, there’s been no lull yet, no let up.
A lot of Irish bands I speak with say that there is a certain attitude in this country towards our own musicians in that they don’t get any recognition unless they are accepted by the public in the UK first. Do you notice this as well? Neddy: Definitely it exists, absolutely, you seen it with The Script even a few years ago. They were largely being ignored by radio stations and people
here until they got popular outside this country, then it was like “Ok these lads are known outside Ireland so now we’re gonna jump on board.” We had it ourselves, radio stations that wouldn’t play us in the past are now playing us daily and all because of what we’ve done outside of the country.
What do you think causes this attitude?
Neddy: I don’t know what causes it, maybe there’s a bit of the age old snobbery. When you’re hanging out with bands and musicians over in the UK it’s all “I’ll help you out, do you need a hand with anything?” And you see it online, on Twitter, they all support and promote each other, we need a lot more of that in this country.
It’s a funny little country isn’t it?!
Neddy: Yeah it is, and you can quote me on that…
I think it was so commendable when you guys turned down a potentially lucrative support slot for Chris Brown in the O2 a couple of years ago, what was the story behind that?
Neddy: The single we had out at the time Blue Eyes was about domestic violence and then obviously with his background we didn’t think it would send out the right message to our fans if we had supported him. But our turning him down was very under the cuff, the media painted a picture that we had told him to f*ck off but it wasn’t like that at all. It was just an email to his management to say thanks but no thanks. Don’t ask me how it got out there, the
day it came out we were like “Ahhh boll*x!” Walshy: The media reported that I was the one who’d told him to f*ck off so I was the one who had to take all the questions. I’d never said anything to him! We sat in the van, got the offer and we all just said “No” as we didn’t think it was the right thing to do and that’s all there was to it. The story went all around the world, from the States to Australia, I was getting mad calls from people.
You guys seem to deal with a lot of social themes in your music, Sunny Days deals with suicide awareness what has the response been like to that particular track?
Neddy: The response to that song was phenomenal. It’s always one we do in our live shows and the version we do live is totally different to the album version. I think the acoustic stripped back version is the song. After doing Sunny Days we got to work with Walk in My Shoes which is a suicide charity. I haven’t got a bad thing to say about that song. Walshy: We were out in a nightclub last week and a lad came up to us and said the song has had a positive effect on him. That happens quite a bit actually. The song is about Neddy’s cousin and there’s a line in it about having a beer so we have a toast on the stage during that song.
You won Song of The Year at the Meteor Choice Awards a few months ago for Never

of great acts coming up at the moment. It’s a healthy time for Irish music, hopefully it Neddy: When we got the news keeps like that because it’s a that we’d been nominated sh*t time economy wise with we thought that was fantastic people emigrating and a lot because we looked at who we of negativity in the press. I were up against, Hozier and would’ve been in the same ship Kodaline who’ve had songs if it wasn’t for this band. worldwide and thought we had Neddy: Ship?! Ship?! What’s absolutely no chance. And then this the 1800’s?! Where were ya when we actually won on the going to go in the coffin ship?! night we were like: “Jesus!” To Walshy: Before this music thing win an award that’s voted for by happened I was on the Social music fans made it even sweeter. Welfare getting €100 a week It sort of opened our eyes as and giving me Ma €50, how can well to the support for us that’s anyone live on that? I wanted out there. Neddy: I’ve friends in Australia and they’re not there by choice. What do think of the They didn’t want to go, they current Irish music had to do. Obviously it’s a new scene? beginning but at the end of the Walshy: It’s getting day if they had the choice they very strong at wouldn’t have gone. A lot of the moment; people are seeing other Gavin James; people do it and now Hozier; they wanna go as Kodaline, well. The Script, Coronas, there’s loads
Which of your singles do you most enjoy playing live?
Neddy: Out of the three singles we haven’t played the third one live yet, that’s how new it is! If I had to pick between the other two I’ll go for Never Gonna Walk Away just because it was the first single off the new album. That’s one I love to do live. I think it’s just a real fan favourite and of course as we were saying earlier we were fortunate enough to win Song of the Year with it so it’s always great at a gig when we start playing that one and people recognise it. It always gets a great response.
lads in their 50’s there who were expecting this random ska band! One of them actually danced! We were talking to them afterwards and he said, “Ah fair play lads, it’s not my scene. I thought we were coming to see a ska band. Fair play anyway”.
Finally lads, what are your plans for the rest of the year?
Neddy: The next big gig we have coming up is the Olympia on the 5th of September, which is the start of the all-ages tour of the country. We felt it was important to do this because a lot of our fans have never had the chance to see us yet. We’ll Why have you be getting announced for some shortened the band festivals in the UK soon too as name from Original well. Jack Reynor INTERVIEW FROM THE IRISH PREMIERE OF TRANSFORMERS By Rachel Lynch
Dubliner Jack Reynor is already on his way to becoming one of our biggest exports and he’s still only 22. He stars as Shane the racecar driver in Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction which was released Worldwide earlier in July. His casting was reportedly based on his leading performance in What Richard Did. Together he Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz are contracted for three films, beginning a new Transformers trilogy. Reynor has spent the past several weeks travelling the world with his fiancée Madeline Mulqueen as part of the promotional tour for the movie. We at InTallaght met up with Jack at his homecoming event on the blue carpet at the premiere of Transformers 4: Age of Extinction at Dublin’s Savoy Cinema. The action-packed film attracted plenty of Irish celebrities with 2FM’s Lottie Ryan, actor Jay Duffy, Aoibhin Garrihy and ‘Love/ Hate’ actor Laurence Kinlan all in attendance. US-based Dubliner Glenn Keogh also features in the fourth installment of the ‘Transformers’ franchise and was there to celebrate alongside Jack.

Mark leads from the front and it was great to just observe how he does his work and it can inform my work ethic in what I want to do in my career so that’s great.
It must be really nerve racking for you so waiting for them to see it for the You are home in Ireland first time? now and get to spend I’m sh**ing myself. a little bit more time here before you go You did mention before off to Rio, ten days to this was a tough movie, be exact. You got to work with Mark Wahlburg and Irish actor Glen Keogh. It is such a great cast but particularly working with Mark Walberg what was that like?
It was great Mark is a very dedicated, very committed guy, we get on very well together on set and I’ve had a great time just observing his work ethic and how he does what he does and I can say the same about Michael Bay who I feel very privileged to call a friend and Kelsey Grammer and Stanley Tucci who actually threw our engagement dinner for us which was a great experience.
that’s it.
24 You have just starred in one of the biggest films of the year. Was it a big change working on independent films to a massive blockbuster?

Well it’s great I haven’t seen it yet myself but I certainly will be going and paying the money to get in and check it out. It’s very important that we all support Irish films as much as we can.

I was only saying I used to walk home from school down this street everyday and hope that someday I would launch a film in this theatre and no matter what it was just some film and here I am with the biggest film of the year so far and that’s what I’m launching and I’m just incredibly honoured and privileged to have the chance to do this.

Fintan Warfield
Well after 6 years of austerity budgets and being treated harshly I think yes, young people are getting extra disillusioned with politics, they’ve been let down so this is totally understandable. I think young people are still very involved in their communities through volunteering in various organisations but yes they have been let down by the political process, promises being made, and promises being broken when they shouldn’t have been.
INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon
Fintan Warfield has just completed his first month in office as Mayor of South County Dublin. The 22 year old Templogue native and Sinn Fein Councillor is proud to be both an openly LGBT mayor and the youngest mayor in the country. InTallaght met him in his new office to hear how he’s settling in and his hopes and aspirations for the year ahead. How are you settling into your new role one month in?
Very well and obviously extremely busy! Originally to be even nominated was wonderful but to then be elected to this position is a massive honour. I suppose also being the youngest current serving mayor in the country is an aspect which is very important for young people. Being gay as well and thus giving the LGBT community more visibility is something else which is important too. It’s been great so far.
Has the role been how you expected it to be? I genuinely didn’t know what to expect as I didn’t have the comfort of having been in the council beforehand which was
probably a good thing. Dermot (Looney) was brilliant, he sat me down and ran me through a lot of stuff which was very helpful and I’d like to thank him for that and of course Cathal King is here as well from my party so we’ve kind of formed a group around the office.
In your maiden speech you spoke about taking your role into “the homes, communities and work places” in the area, how do you plan to do this?
By being a campaigning mayor, to campaign for change and equality. In terms of how I’ll go about this we’ve targeted three main priorities for the office during the term, these being; Housing/Homelessness, Equality
rights/Inclusiveness and Youth Employment. We plan on visiting old peoples homes and schools particularly. Hopefully we’ll get into a lot of schools in the area because young people at the moment feel very cut off from the political process. This is something we’ve experienced, they feel that politicians only come around at election time so we’re anxious to get to hopefully meet with local students to ask them what their concerns are and how we can possibly help them out.
Speaking with a lot of young people myself I get the feeling that most of them are totally disillusioned with politics, would you agree?
What advice would you have for any young people reading this who are thinking \ of getting involved in politics?
I’d recommend that they get involved in the youth organisations of the parties first. I started in the senior party and there wasn’t that many young people in the Cumann which was a bit isolating. If I was starting again I’d probably go straight to the youth structure.
How did you get involved in politics yourself? I suppose initially I was politicised through songs, because of my family connections to The Wolfe Tones, no family occasion ever passed without songs or music being played! My first experience in politics was through my involvement in campaigning against the first Lisbon Treaty when I became active through Sinn Fein in the inner city in Dublin and this was the first time my eyes would’ve been opened to the inequalities in our society. Of course this was during the Celtic Tiger and I was meeting people living in flats in

Another thing you said in your maiden speech that I thought was interesting was that there is a feeling within the LGBT community that Dublin “isn’t a place for them.” Could you elaborate on this please?
Sure, what I was getting at comes back to visibility, like what we’ve seen last weekend with Pride which was wonderful, seeing flags outside businesses in the city centre, and the goodwill towards the event was to be commended but that attitude towards the LGBT community isn’t always evident. There are still loads of issue difficulties for people coming out, particularly across the country as well, not just in Dublin, but in rural Ireland also. The government don’t seem to have the resources or the energy to deal with that. I also think the GAA could step in and do a bit more as well, especially in terms of the isolation young people feel.
How important is it for you on a personal level to be mayor in the same year as the Equality Referendum will be held (prospective date Spring 2015)?
We were conscious that the referendum would take place during the term, of course we were, and I suppose having someone in a position that could influence change was a positive for us and we’re very much looking forward to having the debate in the coming months.
Did you encounter any opposition to the flying of the Rainbow flag outside the Council offices during Pride? No not all but I do think there was some opposition to myself becoming mayor on the basis that it was the year of the referendum and there was a
fear that we were politicizing the office but as regards the flag no the council were extremely accommodating, I thought we would have to bring it up in meetings etc to get the ok but no it was so easy. Following this I also received quite a few supportive emails from people who work in the council, for example one person said that overnight their colleagues seemed to have become more tolerant of the LGBT community, so this is very positive as workplace inclusivity is something we hope to deal with in the coming year.
What do you think is the biggest issue facing this area at the moment? Youth unemployment is the biggest issue Tallaght has, the rate of which is higher here than anywhere else in the country and that needs
to be addressed right away. he conditions must be put in place to make it easier for small businesses to take people on, that’s the most important issue in this area at the moment.
Finally Fintan away from your role as mayor what do you like to do to relax?
Playing football with my club St Judes in Templeogue is very important to me and also going to Inchicore to watch St Pats play as well is something I love doing. Of course I’m also a member of The Young Wolfe Tones which is great craic and something I really enjoy. I also like to do some graphic design and mess around on Photoshop!

And one more made four! New Style Club comes to The Square.
A Closer Look At...
It’s the hair salon trendsetters love and now there’s one more as Style Club’s unique brand of hairdressing has arrived at the Square, Tallaght in Dublin. Colour popping interiors, the latest styling and colouring techniques have long been hallmarks of Style Club, and this new salon is no different! Summer trends from the team at Style Club include channelling the festival vibe with sunkissed, high shine looks or a pastel tone that’s perfect for long summer nights. The team are also taking inspiration from celeb land where the midi cut à la Kylie Jenner and Fearne Cotton is the new must-have look. Easy to maintain and totally on trend, this style gives instant red carpet glamour with none of the hassle.
Strong, bold colour is another trend to look out for, the Style Club team are encouraging you to be daring and enjoy experimenting with your look. 34 The bold graphic fringe and the clean lines were inspired by the strong architectural lines and shapes used in the design and appearance of the salon which is easily recognised as the styleclub brand. To compliment this they used a marbling technique, which involves lightening the ends of the haircut and diffusing the lightness back up towards the mid sections. They used a navy to accentuate the technique as blue has featured heavily on the runways of fashion week across the globe for Spring/ Summer and is set to continue as a trend into Autumn/Winter 14/15.
35 This Lilac look is another nod towards an on trend colour palette. This look is much more relaxed and wearable but still very fashion focused. The playful application of the dusky darker tones blending in and out of the lighter tones give a youthful and fresh look. This technique can be used to create texture, movement and the illusion of volume. The two looks are intended to represent the two distinct sides of the styleclub look. Strong and bold yet playful and fresh.

TAMMY By Rachel Lynch
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES By Rachel Lynch
It was just over three years ago when the last installment of the Rise of the Planet of the Apes left us all wondering whether the humans eventually survived the deadly virus. We didn’t know what happened to Will, or the fate of his relationship with the once lovable and domesticated but now dangerous ape, Caesar. The official trailer was released last month and from what I can see it seems the mystery is only going to deepen further. For starters, the plot has already jumped 10 years since the virus was unleashed upon the human race. The apes seem more genetically evolved, intelligent and deadly.
Caesar who was once a pet ape that protected humans has become leader and it seems he has lost all regard for the life of humans. He no longer has any feeling towards them, or does he? Will an encounter with a small group of humans unleash havoc? Or will it remind Caesar of the memorable time in his life that he shared with the human race? The trailer promises a lot, and as Caesar says, “the war has already begun”. But in the war of species, which will survive?
Director Ben Falcone joins forces again with wife Melissa McCarthy in Tammy. The hilarious comedy sees some big time names like Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd, and Kathy Bates, not to mention a production team that includes the iconic funny man Will Ferrell. The film sees Tammy played by McCarthy who after just being sacked from her dead end job returns home to find her husband Greg is having an affair with one of their neighbours. She heads to her mother’s home where her grandmother Pearl played by Sarandon offers Tammy her car to escape the town on one condition, she takes her on the trip with her. Tammy refuses initially that is until Pearl offers her all her life savings, it isn’t long before the pair take to the road on their adventure.
They set their attention to reaching Niagara Falls, during this time she ends up involved in a hilarious robbery of a fast food restaurant. Katy Bates plays Pearl’s lesbian cousin who wakes Tammy up to the world around her. Surprisingly there is a love interest along the way for Tammy who had all but given up on men. There is plenty of laugh out loud scenes throughout. Can the two bold characters help each other get their lives on track?

THE PURGE: ANARCHY By Rachel Lynch
This year’s sequel The Purge: Anarchy sees Director James DeMonaco’s return to that one night of terror all Americans dread. It’s a night where all crime is legal for 12 hours on an annual basis, all hospitals, fire stations and police stations in the United States are closed down. This time we see the story venture from one household to the entire City. From the trailer we see a young couple Shane and Liz whose car runs out of petrol as the evening approaches leaving them stranded in the
middle of a city where those who aren’t hiding away are running around its streets, on the prowl to draw blood. We also see the film primarily focus on character Leo who’s on a personal quest for vengeance, he is searching for the man who killed his son. After their home is destroyed Eva and Cali run to seek refuge on the streets of Los Angeles. The five people meet up can they survive the night? As we can see from the trailer alone this film appears to be bigger and louder than its predecessor.

Music ED SHEERAN X
SINÉAD O’CONNOR Take Me To Church
By Linn Heldal
By Padraig Conlon
Sinéad O’Connor’s new single Take Me To Church shows that one of our greatest ever female singers still has the ability to create powerful emotional songs delivered with genuine depth behind them.
X, apparently pronounced ‘multiply’, shows Ed Sheeran has done just that to the number of genres by which he is influenced on his second studio album. The highly anticipated X is something new and original coming from Mr Sheeran, and it’s so completely an album of its time. It went straight to No 1, and has now become 2014’s fastest selling album, breaking Coldplay’s earlier record of the year. Breaking the US seems to have had a significant impact on the sound on X, which is produced by two huge names, Pharell Williams and Rick Rubin. The R&B influences ooze from the speakers, while talented Sheeran also manages to keep true to the traditional style he is known and loved for. With X the singer-songwriter once again shows how he makes his softness his strength, with pop-sensibilities, fantastic songwriting skills and his ability to tell stories with his lyrics.
Then comes the super hit single Sing, cowritten with Pharell Williams. It’s a song so contagious, funky and American, I almost can’t believe it`s the same Ed Sheeran I’m listening to! He shows off his rapping abilities and at the same time, the song has a great mix of R&B and singer-songwriter folk sounds. In its wake follows the funky summer sounds of Don’t and Runaway, two other potential No 1 hit singles of the album. X is very personal and revealing about Sheeran’s former flames. Life on the road seems to affect his relationships, something heard in Nina and rap/hip-hop song The Man, which almost sounds like an English version of Eminem mixed with The Black Keys.
Then it’s back to ballads with Thinking Out It kicks off with One, a traditional Ed Sheeran Loud, which gives a clear nod to Marvin ballad, which features a beautifully arranged Gaye’s Let’s Get it On. Sheeran’s band is string quartet. It’s about love and “stumbling in the groove here and it features a home as drunk as I have ever been”, both surprising, but nevertheless impressive, themes which repeat themselves later on the vintage guitar solo. album. Ed Sheeran uses a big palette of colours Next track, I’m A Mess, builds its intensity on this highly eclectic album. He shows the with backing vocals and hand clapping world just how versatile and talented he is, sounds throughout the song, which and in my opinion, he has definitely passed reminded me of Ben Howard. the ‘difficult second album’ test.
Her difficult, complicated and traumatic relationship with religion is well documented and probably doesn’t need to be dragged up again and here she seems to be looking back on her spiritual life and questioning her past decisions. When she asks that the listener Take Me To Church what she means is the actual church building and not the institution, “not the ones that hurt, ‘cause that ain’t the truth.” This is a catchy, upbeat tune even though its subject matter deals with Sinéad reflecting on a life of confrontation and failed relationships, here she is trying to find peace and doesn’t “wanna sing from where I sang before.” It contains everything we’ve come to expect from O’Connor, a joyous chorus, rousing vocals and powerful lyrics. Take Me To Church is the first single off her forthcoming album I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss and if this is an indication of what we can expect then I’m really looking forward to her new material.
Electronic Entertainment Expo E3 2014
Marine killing dozens of Aliens, Isolation is based on the original film and it is all about replicating Ripley’s experience. This means that there is only one Alien that wants to kill you.
By Colm O’Muiri
Both the trailer and the gameplay footage at E3 were impressive and it looks great. It reminds me of the early Resident Evils for the scary/creepy factor.
The annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, E3, was held recently in Los Angeles and we here at InTallaght thought we would bring you the highlights from this year’s event. 2k Warner Brothers, Rockstar Games, Nintendo along with Sony and Microsoft all held exhibitions at this year’s event showcasing some of their biggest and best upcoming games. Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel from the rebooted series which follows a young Lara Croft. Not wanting to give anything away to gamers who are currently playing the first game in the revamp the trailer
showcased at E3 shows Lara sneaking through caves and picking off soldiers with her bow. It also shows her therapist trying to help her through her current mental troubles, Tomb Raider rarely disappoints and this trailer certainly didn’t.
Fifa 15 also got an outing and it looks much better than that of Fifa 14 for the next-gen consoles which I was not impressed with last year. There are also a few months to go before the release of Fifa 15 which means it can only get better, which is going to be impressive going off what I have seen recently. Alien Isolation is not like the other recently released Alien games in which you played a
Batman Arkham Knight, perhaps the game I am most looking forward to, had a gameplay trailer which featured the Batmobile and the whole thing looked like a cut scene the graphics are that good. Gameplay looks like the same as the other Arkham games, which is not a bad thing and it looks like another great Batman game. E3 also featured the first teaser trailer for the new DOOM game which looked brilliant it also featured the official website for the game in the trailer which will have more updates coming over the next few weeks. Halo 5 Guardians, NHL 15, Rainbow Six Siege, Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain and countless other games had trailers, announcements or gameplay footage at E3 and to see everything from E3 you can visit the official YouTube page for all the videos. E3 did not disappoint this year and as I mentioned above you can see all the videos from this year’s amazing event on the official YouTube page for E3 2014 to see if anything from a game you have been waiting for. .has been announced.

WII SPORTS CLUB
ODDWORLD ABE’S ODDYSEE NEW ‘N’ TASTY
By Colm O’Muirí
Wii Sports Club gets its retail release on the Wii U this month on July 11th in Europe, after all five sports were released at different times over the past year on the Nintendo eShop. Wii Sports Club features five different sports all in the one game and they are Tennis, Bowling, Golf, Boxing and Baseball. The game is a remake of the original which was a launch title for the original Wii back in 2006; however the game has been improved and made into High Definition also. The gameplay has been improved greatly from the original in the different sports, most notably in the tennis game which allows players to do specific shots as opposed to just the backhand. This game allows players to really test their skill with you trying to beat your opponent by using slice and topspin shots. If you have the Wii U game pad your gameplay is improved that bit more. In
the Baseball game the game pad allows players to aim there pitches in the game improving your chance of striking out your opponent. Within the game players are able to join different clubs and represent the different regions across the world in the online gameplay, you can also

Wii Sports looks like a great game and like many of the Wii games will keep everyone in the family entertained for hours on end.
Oddworld New and Tasty follows the story of the original game although it is a complete rebuild from the ground up. Like the original you take control of Abe, a Mudokon who is a world class floor cleaner working for Rupture Farms and there evil owner Molluck the Glukkon. Late one night as he is working in the factory Abe overhears a meeting between Molluck and his board members about falling sales and his idea for a new product Tasty Treats, the main ingredient being

Abe and the rest of his fellow Mudokons. Abe’s initial goal is to escape Rupture Farms but when he does he must return to not only rescue the rest of the Mudokons from their Tasty Treat fate but to bring the factory down once and for all. Anyone who played the original game will tell you it was not the simplest of games and the remade version will have different levels of difficulties with more checkpoints. Even the hard setting is more generous with the checkpoints than the original. As it is a next-gen game there are improved graphics, there was always
going to be considering Abe’s Oddysee was released in August 1997. However the game is in 1080p resolution and unlike the original game in which the camera stayed in the one position following Abe, also known as the flip screen format, this has changed from the original. New and Tasty features a free flowing camera because of the larger level areas, the camera zooms in and out automatically when it needs to. The game looks brilliant and it seem to have enough to get people who loved the original to give New and Tasty a go and also has enough for new fans of Oddworld games.

Motor SEAT LEON FR By Rachel Lynch
I headed down to Cranley Cars on the Naas Road, just a mile from The Square, this week to test drive the Seat Leon FR. The model is one of the top in the Seat Leon range and it didn’t disappoint. It’s sporty and classy at the same time, and will appeal to the customer looking for an affordable family car or the single customer looking for a head turning sleek motor. The exterior focal point in my opinion is the LED headlights. The race-inspired FR is teeming with features designed exclusively for the demanding driver. A honeycombed grill adorned with the eye catching FR logo puts this model streets
ahead of others in its class. This FR uses the same chassis as the Audi A3, the VW Golf and the Skoda Octavia, so you know that it will deliver. The layout inside the FR is superb. It’s actually quite simple but that’s what makes it so impressive. The style of the dash is quite boxy yet the ultra modern touch screen is the major focus. Not only has it a superb dash but I found that the front cabin was perfectly spacious and to be honest the back wasn’t lacking either, again as mentioned above, a perfect family car for those who want to keep it trendy. There was a child car seat placed in the back to highlight the space. The boot is sufficient too offering 380 litres. There are two trims of seating available, standard and sporty.
I was pleasantly surprised by the drive. I found the steering to be very responsive and the suspension is excellent. When you put your foot down you can feel the power go through the car. The Seat Leon FR starting price for the petrol model is from €27,095 and it falls into tax band B2 which means at today’s motor tax rates you will be paying €280 per year. The staring price for the diesel is €27,600 and the car tax is just €180 per year. Overall I was very impressed with the FR model, for the price you are paying compared to others within its class you are really getting a bargain. Drop in to Cranley Cars on the Naas Road today to organise a test drive. Dealer Principal Frank Hogbin will look after you.

By Fergus McNally The Hazmat Killer has killed three times previously but only comes to the squad’s attention when the fourth victim is a woman of vast wealth and even greater connections. Zach and Kylie are summoned to Gracie Mansion to meet the Mayor of NY who impresses on them the need to find the killer and fast as his political career depends on it. The case is further complicated when the deceased turns out to be an aide for the Mayor’s opponent in the upcoming election. As the public pressure mounts, and political and personal secrets of the highest order hang in the balance, Zach and Kylie must find out what’s really behind the murderer’s rampage. But Kylie has been acting strange recently--and Zach knows whatever she’s hiding could threaten the biggest case of their careers. NYPD Red 2, the next outstanding novel in James Patterson’s newest series, is a thrilling read and brings the reader on a roller coaster ride that careers through New York City and deep into the mind of a depraved killer you’ve never seen before. As with most if not all of James Patersons novels this one is very easy to read, the plot and characters are not too intricate as to tax the mind too much. It is the perfect holiday read and lets face it after a busy year of work most of us just want to relax by the pool with some pulp fiction!

Business SeeSearch SeeSearch was designed by Dr. Hilary Kenna, a lecturer in design at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology who started research on the idea over two years ago with funding from Enterprise Ireland’s commercialisation fund. In October 2013, Dr. Kenna formed a startup company called Vizolve Ltd., with David Garvan, lead developer of SeeSearch to commercially develop and sell the product and since then, have secured investment from Telefonica’s accelerator programme Wayra. When Kenna presented the concept for SeeSearch to South Dublin Libraries, County Librarian Georgina Byrne was immediately interested because coincidentally at the time, they were looking for an all-in-one discovery solution out of that meeting, grew a collaboration with South Dublin Libraries supporting Hilary Kenna and her team in the development of SeeSearch, its features and its application to the information resources offered to customers by South Dublin Libraries. SeeSearch delivers a modern, highly usable, customer-friendly product which simplifies searching across all the quality information resources selected by South Dublin Libraries for its customers and staff. INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon
In his second spell with The Hoops, Dean Kelly has recently found himself back in the team and back among the goals. We catch up with the man who scored the goal which clinched Rovers last league title in 2011. Two goals and two wins, you must be fairly happy with your return to the first team? Yeah I’m delighted with how it’s gone as I’ve been waiting to get my chance all season and I’ve had to be patient but when I’ve got my chance I’ve taken it. I love Shamrock Rovers, I want to be at this club and I want to be playing and contributing for Rovers on the pitch so I was very happy to get those goals. The competition for places here right now is great, there are four of us strikers looking to start and obviously this drives each of us on, which is what you need in a team that’s looking to win titles and cups. Of course we can’t all start every game, and in some of the matches this season we’ve gone with one up front which makes the competition even greater. Trevor has told me all through the season that my chance would come and that
when it did I had to take it. He was right about that. Now I’ve got to keep it going.
What are your thoughts on how the season has gone so far? I think we’ve come back from the mid season break a lot stronger, you could see that in the UCD and Pat’s games. I think the Pats game was our best performance of the season up to now. Losing the Cork match at home before the break was very disappointing but every time we’ve had a setback this season we’ve bounced back well and responded in the right way. There is great spirit in the camp and we’re in a great position right now. It’s going to be tight in the race for the title, there’s only a few points separating the top four but there’s a long way to go.
Of the other title challengers who have you been most impressed with? Definitely Cork City, they were excellent against us down there and of course took the three points in Tallaght so I have to say they’re the strongest team we’ve faced so far. I played with Mark O Sullivan for the Irish Amateur team and he’s a very good player and he’s having a great season. They’ve made Turners Cross into a bit of a fortress again and going down there is going to be tough but we’ll just have to take it on.
Back in 2010 you made the jump from Leinster Senior League to League One in England after moving from Crumlin United to Oldham, how did that move come about?
55 In May 2010 I played for the Ireland Amateur side against an Ireland development team who had players like Paul McShane, Shane Long and Anthony Stokes. We lost 2-0 but I did alright and there were a few scouts there and I got the offer to go over to Oldham for a two and a half week trial. That went well and after that I got the call from Paul Dickov (Oldham’s then manager) saying that he liked me and they wanted to offer me a six month contract which I was more than happy to accept. I had actually got a lot of offers from English clubs back when I was 15 or 16 but I never took them up because I probably wasn’t motivated enough at that age, I was happier just having fun with my friends. So when the chance came around again when I was 24 I didn’t think twice. At the time I was in the same job I am now, working for Dublin City Council doing a lot of building work, so the opportunity to be a full time professional footballer was brilliant.
Even though your spell with Oldham was only for six months do you look back on it as a positive experience? Absolutely, I loved it and I learned a lot and improved as a player. I think I did well for them and I wasn’t out of my depth. They gave me 15 games, I don’t think they would’ve done that if they didn’t think I was good enough. I scored for them as well. We beat Plymouth 4-2 in October that year and I got one of the goals which is nice to look back on.But in the end I wasn’t getting enough games for me to stay on. They offered me another six months but I was missing home plus Oldham had
Dean Kelly just signed two players on loan from Sunderland so they were going to come in and get games ahead of me. I just want to play football. If I’m not playing then there’s no point in me being there so I decided to come home. I was lucky though that I was able to come back to my job in Dublin City Council because I hadn’t packed it in and had just taken a career break.
What was Paul Dickov like to work with? He was brilliant, he was very good to me and helped me so much. He used to stay back after training and show us strikers what we should and shouldn’t be doing. He gave me some great tips. I took it all in because he played for Arsenal and Manchester City and had a great career. When someone like that gives you advice you listen.
How does English League One compare to the League of Ireland standard wise? I think they’re very similar and the only thing that separates them really is the League One players are full time so that means they’re a bit stronger, a bit more physical, only because they’re getting to train every day. But ability wise the League of Ireland players are just as good. Most of the teams in League One would play a bit more direct, more route one, whereas most of the teams here like to get it down and play it around.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career? My brother Jason who managed
me at Tolka Rovers from when I was 17. He helped me as I was coming up the ranks, he was the one who was most responsible for me becoming a footballer.
Who is the toughest opponent you’ve ever faced? Rio Ferdinand. I played against him for Oldham Reserves v Man United Reserves and I don’t think I touched the ball once. He was phenomenal. Their reserve team that night was ridiculous, we lost 3-1, Chicharito got two and then Ryan Giggs came off the bench for the last 20 minutes! It was great to get to play against such wonderful players who’ve done so much in the game and I’m a United fan, growing up with my father I had no other choice, he made sure I supported them!
What has been the highlight of your career so far…or need I ask?! (Laughs) Yes the goal against UCD to win the league in 2011 is definitely the highlight. I’ve done some great things in my career but that is the one I most proud of. I remember it well, it’s funny every time I go to play in UCD the lads all joke that I’m definitely gonna score!
How tough was it to leave the club just a couple of months after scoring that title clinching goal? It was very tough but I had no other option. Stephen (Kenny) had come in and changed the training to 10 in the morning but because of my job I couldn’t do it, it would’ve been impossible. I didn’t want to leave. There
was no hard feelings from me towards Stephen, he wanted me to stay but I couldn’t. I had already taken a career break to go to Oldham and that option wasn’t open for me anymore.
How did the move back to Rovers come about? I had worked with Trevor on two previous occasions in my career, under Michael O Neill and then at Pats so I knew him well and really enjoyed working with him. Initially when he took over at Rovers he asked me to join but it wasn’t possible then. The second time he asked me to come up and train I was delighted. As I said earlier I love this club and I’m so happy to be back here.
Finally Dean what have you thought of the World Cup? It’s been brilliant, I’ve really enjoyed it. There’s been plenty of goals, a few shocks and it’s great to see some of the smaller countries like Costa Rica going on a run. I had Neymer backed for top scorer so I’m a bit disappointed he got injured but aside from that it’s been great!

Luke Byrne INTERVIEW
You reacted very well and very level headed in the face of some extreme provocation from the Bohs fans especially in the game at Tallaght, how hard is it to stay cool when the opposition supporters are throwing stuff at you?
By Padraig Conlon
Since making the switch from Bohs at the end of last season Luke has settled in really well at Rovers and already produced some memorable performances in the Hooped jersey. We caught up with him during the mid season break as he reflected on the start of his Rovers career and the season so far.
You’ve just completed half of your first season at Rovers, how are you enjoying it and how have you settled in? I’m really enjoying it. Full time football has been my dream my whole life so to be in a professional environment like that every day is brilliant. I settled in very quickly to be honest. That was down to the staff and the players for making me feel welcome.
How did the move from Bohs come about and did you have any second thoughts on making the switch because of the bad feeling between the two clubs?
Trevor got in touch with me and asked me would I be interested in meeting and having a chat. I was out of contract and was open to it so I went and met him and listened to what he had to say. It was a surprise to me as I hadn’t really thought about myself as someone who Rovers might have been watching or interested in. Once I met the gaffer I was sold on what the club was like and how he did things and had my mind made up.
What has been your favourite game for The Hoops so far? I think the away game vs Bohs which we won 3-1. It was a big game as we were up at the top after a couple games and the Dublin derby is the biggest
game in the country. Bohs played well but we won and played well. Personally I came in for a lot of abuse and to come away with 3 points and a good team and personal performance was very pleasing.
What has been the standout thing for you regarding Rovers as a club? Are you impressed with the set up? I think the one thing that strikes you straight away is how professionally things are done. Trevor and Giller and the staff are all very clear on how things are run and it transmits to the players as everybody is very professional and do things the right way.
I can take the abuse no problem it doesn’t bother me but it was tough to deal with having things thrown at you. You want to react and turn around and have a go but that’s just stooping to whoever threw the objects level and it’s what they want. You have to stay cool and concentrate on the football which is what Trevor encouraged me to do.
What are the targets you want to achieve with Rovers? I want to win as many trophies as possible and improve as a player. We have a great squad and are capable of winning any of the competitions.
Favourite team and player when you were growing up? I’m a huge Man United fan and growing up I always and still do look up to Wayne Rooney. His passion and aggressive style is what every fan loves to see.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
57 It’s the standard answer but has to be my dad. He was my first coach and coached me for years. When it was time to move on he encouraged me and became my personal driver! Even to this day he comes to my games and lets me know what I need to do better.
Luke Byrne Who is the toughest opponent you’ve ever faced? Jordan Ibe off Liverpool was excellent recently in the friendly at the Aviva. I wasn’t marking him but I think he will be an English international and play in the Premier League.
Most memorable game you’ve ever played in? A couple stick out but I think I’ll go for my Ireland U19 debut against Ukraine two years ago. My family flew out to see me play the U19 euro elite phase. That was special.
If you could change anything about the League of Ireland what would it be? I would like to see a larger stronger league where everyone plays each other twice and the teams are spread out amongst the country.
Do you have ambitions to play in the UK eventually? Yeah I’ve never made a secret of it that my ambition is to play in England. I don’t like obsessing about it though because it can distract you from more important things like your team and form for them.
You also learn about other aspects of football like nutrition, the gym and recovery.
High and low point in your career so far? Low point is probably finishing where we did last year and only staying up on the last day of the season relying on other people results. We shouldn’t have been in that position. High point would be signing my first professional contract for Rovers or my Ireland U21 call up in March.
How do you feel your game has improved in the last two years?
I feel I have improved a lot. Last year I think I improved my How beneficial did you physique and fitness a lot which find the FAS course and helped me compete against would you recommend men and be on a par with them it to other young but this year I think it’s more footballers? technical stuff which I have improved and my understanding The FAI/FÁS course was excellent of the game. and if I could I would do it again. Harry McCue and Shaun Maher do a great job in there Do you think Rovers and over the years are well placed to make a title challenge in have been the second half of the responsible season? for a number of LOI players Yeah definitely. Obviously it was disappointing to lose to Cork as we had been on a good run but we will go on another good run development now I am sure. in the course. Players like Chris We are still in the mix and we have players who know how to Lyons and Hugh win leagues in our squad so I am Douglas were in my course confident we can do well. and every year there are more coming through under them.

Writers’ Corner THROUGH THE CAROUSEL WINDOW By Michael J. Whelan
After a weekend retreat at the Carousel Creates Writers Centre Soon – it will be the moontime and O how the stars they will come out but for now I am content for through the carousel window I watch the world as it moves about. On this late November evening Lambay’s crooked silhouette climbs out over my thin horizon, lifts the heaviest whitest sky once more above Dublin bay. Then there’s the little songs and silent tunes of small birds perched on power lines, like notes on new sheet music they form and spin and change the shape of poems inside my mind. Seeking freedom through meniscus glass (the membrane of my skull) they push and pull and slosh around where tall ships come and go, like tides against their hulls. Through this lens I witness worlds of dancing trees and autumn leaves, hills running to the sea, and capture words and write the poems the carousel creates for me.
OBSERVING By Michael J. Whelan
There is only one golden leaf left on the winter tree near the river a pigeon, perched on a corner shop gutter watches me only turning its head to follow a passing bus towering over city traffic on the crowded bridge a woman begs loudly with a paper cup.
IN DARKNESS By Michael J. Whelan every morning I leave for work at 10 to 7 empty streets excitement in the trees all sing for my attention I want to cross the road climb over the iron fence and touch them.
WORDS By Michael J. Whelan
The poet folds the paper poem in four, a perfect groove along the centre – doubled, places it safely into his pocket lest the words fall from the page. Michael J. Whelan is a soldier-poet, writer and historian (Curator – Irish Air Corps Aviation Museum) living in Tallaght County Dublin.
