Welcome
Welcome to Edition 56 of InTallaght Here at InTallaght we’re all still raging we never got to see Garth Brooks perform live in all his amazing glory. Ed and Rio had planned to bring us to one of the shows and got some lovely tasteful InTallaght cowboy hats made specially for us to wear on the night. We’d even managed to secure an interview with the great man that we were going to run in this edition. Thanks a lot Dublin County Council, you’ve ruined not only our dreams but our magazine as well! So instead lovely readers you’re going to have to make do with some other American singer called Lana Del Rey. We heard she’s fairly well known in music circles and to be fair she’s a lot prettier than Garth. Our secondary interview is with local band Hare Squead, three young friends starting out on what we hope will be an exciting and fulfilling career. The lads have been getting a lot of media attention over the past year, keep an eye on them, we think they’re going to be massive. Tallafest returns again this month (has it been a year already?!) and we hope everyone gets involved to make this year’s festival really successful!

Tallaght Theatre - 98FM Awards
14
Up against venue favourites such as The Olympia, Whelan’s and Vicar Street, Tallaght Theatre, the South Dublin Voluntary Theatre Group has been crowned Dublin’s “Best Gig Venue” at the first 98fm “Best of Dublin Awards” with over 57% of the public vote It was a night of fanfare and fun at the first official 98fm “Best of Dublin Awards” final, held at the prestigious Smock Alley Theatre, the awards were a public voted recognition of all things loved by Dubliners. From “Best Barber”, to “Best Dub” and everything in between, the event was hosted by “Dublin Talks” presenters Adrian Kennedy and Jeremy Dixon. Nominated in the “Best Gig Venue” Category was local voluntary theatre group, Tallaght Theatre. Celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2015, the amateur dramatics group, who are based on the Greenhills Road were the clear underdog, being nominated alongside venue heavyweights such as The Olympia, Whelan’s, Vicar Street and the O2 Academy. “With Tallaght Theatre undergoing a fresh lease of life in the past three years, we thought we’d enter the nomination stages for the fun of it. But on being nominated in the final, it soon became clear that our supporters believed us, and wanted us to go all the way, so we threw the kitchen sink at it,” said Rob King, Tallaght Theatre’s Technical Director and Head of Online. Having staged a strong online InTallaghtMaster56.indd 14
campaign for votes throughout the month of June, from social media updates, and video content to the introduction of their secret weapon “The VOTESwagen” the group had their eyes and hearts set on the top prize. “Offering my car up to be branded with the Vote Tallaght Theatre labels was a crazy, but the original idea we had to gain the final votes and support from the community in the run up to the awards, with the help of Dublin print company insignia.ie and a good car wash, the Voteswagen was an essential and warmly welcomed part of our campaign, not to mention easy for me to spot in the car park after I did the weekly shopping” The award for Best Gig Venue was presented by Aslan’s Billy McGuinness, at the gala event on Wednesday 9th July, and despite facing stiff opposition in the category, Tallaght Theatre won the award with over 57% of the overall votes. Still dumbfounded by the win, the awards ceremony was to throw up a complete surprise, at the end of the evening, when it was announced that an additional award would be presented, this special award was not voted
for by the public, but instead by a panel of judges in 98fm, who wanted to commend and award the “Dublin’s Best Business or Group” for their impressive campaign in both making the final and going on to win an award, and with one award already in the bag, it was Tallaght Theatre’s time to shine once more when they won their second award of the night. The special award includes a €5000 premium advertising package with 98FM. “For a voluntary group, who have run for nearly 40 years without government, arts council or private investment, the second award will be so very beneficial in continuing our work in Tallaght, and the fact that we have won these awards through the public vote, reaffirms the amazing support we have always gotten from the people of Tallaght and Dublin, and for that we so humbly thank you all, for always believing and standing by your local theatre group,” said Rob. Now a double award winning theatre venue, Tallaght Theatre have their sights set on 2014/2015, Already in preproduction on their next show, due to open in early November. 31/07/2014 01:09

written and was ever going to be written so it definitely made me feel more free to do whatever the hell I wanted because I knew to expect the unexpected and so actually it was easier but the response is always similar so it’s never easier once it’s done but the process is always spontaneous I guess.
INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon
When you listen to Ultraviolence you realise it’s not about violence at all. Why did you pick such a polarising album title? Lana Del Rey is a figure of some controversy for her suggestive lyrics and her talent for publicity. She recently caused a stir when she gave an interview in the UK based Guardian newspaper in which she said, “I wish I was dead already,” and drew criticism from, among others, Kurt Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean. On her 2012 breakthrough album, Born to Die, she cast herself as a tragic pop star from a bygone era. The media seemed obsessed with everything to do with her except her music: the supposedly disastrous early recording career under her real name Lizzy Grant, her supposed multi millionaire father who was bankrolling her career or the heavily ridiculed Saturday Night Live performance that made her a household name. Lana captivated the world with her single “Video Games.” Her album Born To Die sold over 6 million albums and she has sold 12 million singles globally, including her release “Young and Beautiful” taken from the soundtrack of the hit movie The Great Gatsby, her massive InTallaghtMaster56.indd 18
worldwide hit “Summertime Sadness” and her haunting version of “Once Upon a Dream” taken from Disney’s Maleficent. Her videos have generated over one billion views on YouTube making her one of the world’s most sought after artists. In 2012, Del Rey moved from Brooklyn to L.A., and a year later began work on the follow-up to Born to Die. Released in June and produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, Ultraviolence marks a move away from the pop melodies of Born to Die to a more edgy sound with heavy guitar solos and stripped back piano intros. Lyrically Lana remains the same, with titles like Money, Power, Glory and F*cked My Way Up To The Top explicitly referencing her image, and taking aim at her
enemies, some of whom have now changed their tune. Despite modest radio play for the lead single West Coast, the album debuted No.1 on the US Billboard charts, selling 182,000 copies in its first week (more than twice as many as Born to Die), a testament to her growing fanbase and her arrival as one of the queens of 21st century popular music.
Congratulations on your new album Ultraviolence, it’s a wonderful record. Did you feel massive pressure after the success of Born To Die? Thank you so much. Funnily enough I actually felt less pressure because at the end of two years after Born To Die was released I really felt I had read everything that had ever been
No it’s not, the reason I picked that as a title was because I love words, I love high impact words, so the word ultraviolence, just the sound of it spoke to me. The same way the word tropical spoke to me when I was doing my little short film, even though it didn’t have a real exotic translation in English I felt like the juxtaposition of the words ultra and violence kind of fit what I’ve been going through, lots of ebbs and flows. I feel connected to two emotions—aggression and softness. I like that luxe sound of the word “ultra” and the mean sound of the word “violence” together. I like that two worlds can live in one.
Is it about your life experiences of the last two/three years or before that even?
Yes I would say definitely in the last two years and before that as well!
It’s hard to believe that you had any downs in the past two years?
Well I was talking about it with my friends before I think it’s just been somewhat tumultuous, like everytime something really sweet has happened there 31/07/2014 01:10
ultraviolence, just the sound of it spoke to me InTallaghtMaster56.indd 19

has also been something a little bitter coming out of the sidelines, something unexpected and so just, you know lots of ebbs and flows, ups and downs, but you know overall the amazing thing is having the record and loving that.
Is it true that you already started to work on the following album of Born To Die by yourself when Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys arrived on the scene?
I was making Ultraviolence last December at Electric Lady Studios and I was producing it myself with a session drummer and the guitar player from the Black Keys sometime around the 20th and Dan listened to the record and really liked it and he thought that I should go to Nashville with him and start again to get closer to this vision I had of this kind of west coast fusion and underground jazz influence so he kind of brought that sonic idea I had to life.
Did you have any concerns about the fact that Dan Auerbach is more known for being a minimalistic producer which can be seen as the opposite of your sound?
I think maybe we were considered an odd couple but I think that most of that has to do with some kind of general misconceptions about me on my end just because, you know before Born To Die was fully produced the demos were more singer/songwiter rooted and then when when I met Emile Haynie they kind of got built up, especially because not only did he add the beats but he introduced me to Larry Gold from the Philadelphia Orchestra. So there were layers and layers and layers added in that kind InTallaghtMaster56.indd 21
of last section but I think everything kind of started from actually an appreciation for Folk, Classic, Rock n’ Jazz and Blues.
and everything Emile brought to the table. It was nice to go backwards and do something a little more casual.
With this one the reason I liked Dan was because he did keep things simple and he knew what I was going for so in a way for me he was always a really good option for a producer.
Is it true that you were in the studio with a new band?
When I decided to fly out and see Dan in Nashville he lured all of his good friends from Brooklyn, New York and from Nashville so it was seven of us who were involved and we really got along.
With Dan as a producer your album sounds more psychedelic. Is that his sole influence? Well, so far the sound It was a common theme we that connects the songs. What about the lyrics? both liked. I feel like Dan has Everyone wants to know his roots in Funk and Soul, but don’t quote me on that! I mean, how autobiographical they are? I don’t really know what he loves to listen to but I know that he does prefer that more kind of Soul Blues Funk and I liked more kinds of early Jazz, easy with a west coast feel. I think at the end of the day once we were with the band on the first day we both knew exactly what we wanted to hear, a common theme we both liked.
One gets the impression, that you have found yourself on Ultraviolence.
Yes at the end of the day I think when you come from a sort of “do it yourself” background, when you’re writing you don’t censor yourself as much so when I am writing I just try and make songs that I would like to listen to when I’m driving or when I’m at home. I love older music with rich textures, maybe not structured song writing composition.
Another important distinctive feature to Born to Die is the fact that there are no Hip Hop beats anymore?
Yes that’s true, I mean I loved the beats, you know, I appreciate early 90’s influences
I know having done interviews for the last three months now, a lot of them have focused on the lyrics and mainly I must say the negative side which has been hard only because I didn’t even think about what I was putting out there until it was already done. Just because I think not being visible for about seven years, making music by myself but not really thinking about it, or the repercussions or what people are going to say, the feedback but now I think about it more and it is autobiographical and some of it is retrospective and some of it is a little bit of fantasy, some of it is innuendo, references but most of it is being driven by influences or meeting people who have high impact personalities, who have sort of struck me and being inspired lyrically by those, whether they were brief or long lasting.
We already got to know you a bit here in the interview. You are cheerful, you like to laugh, you’re happy. Pretty much the opposite of your music ... Have you noticed this before? Yes I could see it now, I was in a happy place and I have a
31/07/2014 01:10
22 naturally peaceful disposition but I think emotionally I have been influenced by circumstances beyond my control and they’ve sort of infused the tone of the records that I’ve done in the last five years.
What makes you feel happy? That’s a good question. Oh lots of things, I mean, I’m happy when things aren’t bad, I’m happy when things are just kind of calm. I love going to the ocean. I love driving. I love going to shows. Just being with people I really have fun with. I love the summer. I’m happy in the summer. Love hot, hot weather. I’m happy when I’m making a record, most of the time.
In your songs you deal with the themes of love, the world, money, hurt. What gives you solace? Right now I think the thing that gives me the most solace and comfort is having something tangible to hold on to. Something that’s sure in my world which is unsure things have been heavy, on top of feeling not so sure just in terms of what other people thought of me. Your own mortality, having all your experiences but not being sure whether the memory of them will translate after you’re gone. Whether you’ll remember them. It’s just a kind of all encompassing world that also influences what I end up writing and the melodies I choose.
Have any of your sad and melancholic songs ever made you cry live on stage?
I have cried before, in Ireland actually. I was tired and so much came between me and what I
InTallaghtMaster56.indd 22
did and so it actually didn’t even feel like I was singing my own story and that was what was really disappointing because what gave me pleasure in the beginning was to document my own life just for my own sake for the fun of it. I just wasn’t feeling that fun but I think bringing in some new tracks from Ultraviolence has breathed new life into my set, I really love performing West Coast.
It was widely reported two years ago that you weren’t fond of playing live and you suffered from stage fright, is this still affecting you? Yeah it’s getting better (laughs) It is! I think I was so nervous at the beginning that I felt like I had so much scrutiny people were coming to the show just to see whether it was bad or good, rather than just coming to appreciate it. I don’t feel as nervous getting on stage now.
You’ve got a lot of flak in the press lately for comments you made in a UK paper. Does this bother you?
Yeah in America and Britain they’ve been not very polite! In terms of pieces it was almost like my story had been written for me and it was a strange shift from feeling like my life was my own and I was driving it to feeling like I was in the back seat and just along for the ride and maybe the ride wasn’t going to be a good one. And it’s continued to be rocky and a lot of the time I feel like the music wasn’t written to be popular and therefore not pop music. It was more coming from an alternative background and
an autobiographical place like in a way I was just working my life out through songs so I can see why if people thought it was going to be motivational or popular that would be disrupting or upsetting. It’s like they were looking for someone who was inspiring and they weren’t getting that.
You also incurred the wrath of some feminist groups for the lyrics in Video Games. Did this surprise you?
Del Rey recently played a sold-out show to a 5,000-strong crowd at the Marquee in Cork. The album title tracks were particularly well received. At the end of ‘Ultraviolence’, she left the stage and climbed to the pit in front, signing autographs and posing for selfies for what seemed like the entire front row.
Yes I didn’t understand how that aroused any kind of feminist commentary, because all I was saying was, ‘I’m so happy when you get home, and heaven is a place on earth with you. I’ve never been happier.’ I didn’t understand any reason why that sounded submissive, to me. In fact, I actually thought that at such a young age, I was blessed to find someone who made me so happy. And I just didn’t understand why true love shouldn’t be the end-all, be-all. I have everything else, you know? But obviously, in other songs, it takes a different turn. And it’s just different experiences, really.
Finally Lana considering all the aggressive criticism you have received in your career do you now feel vindicated? I feel a sense of relief, but I don’t feel vindicated. I don’t feel like things have gone well. It’s not the way I would have chosen them to go. So it’s not like I feel everything’s turned around and it’s great. But my motivations are the same now, which is just to document what happened and try and feel better about it.
31/07/2014 01:10
the thing that gives me the most solace and comfort is having something tangible to hold on to.

Hare Squead
INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon
Hare Squead, are three young friends from Tallaght and Blanchardstown, who just might be one of the most original bands that this country has produced in year. We met up with Tony Lomeno, Henoc Divova and Jessy Kalala as they embark on their oddessy. Thanks very much for coming in to see us today lads, would you like to introduce the band to our readers?
Henoc: We’ve been together for almost a year now, we met each other through music, Tony and I started the band Hare Squead and we always knew Jessy, even though we’d never met him, just through the internet because he used to do music as well. Plus we all skated so one day we were in town and we all just bumped into each other. From then on we just started hanging out more and started making music together, we formed a collective with another guy, Craig. So after we did a sold out show in the Academy we decided to become a three piece band…and we are!
InTallaghtMaster56.indd 24
So musically do you all have the same interests?
Jessy: Yeah we do but we’ve all been involved in different types of band as well, I was involved in punk bands before, Henoc has been involved in gospel music and indie bands and Tony always rapped. Tony: We’ve always been involved in music.
How would you describe your sound?
Henoc: Right now I’d say experi-mental, it’s mixed. The song we released before Come Outside was funky Jazz, now our latest track is a real electronic song. Tony: We’re not always just into one thing, we just like being alternative, we don’t want to be pigeon holed into one type of music.
Tony and Henoc has growing up in Tallaght influenced any of your writing?
Tony: I wish it did but most of the bands/artists that have inspired me come from the States. Henoc: No not really, maybe it will in the future. Jessy: A lot of the music that has influenced us has come from America so we try to make our sound like the music from there, on that level, then go for an Irish level and just keep it here.
You’ve been getting a lot of attention from the Irish media in the last few months; this must mean you’re doing something right? Jessy: Yeah, it’s just happened really randomly, like when we released Beautiful World we didn’t release it as a song, we
had released it for a competition to get to support Lil Wayne in the O2. Tony: We had really rushed it to be honest with you. Jessy: Even the video to it was rushed, we shot it then I edited it that night. So when we didn’t win the competition we were like “Oh man, we’re quitting music, let’s just stop!” And then about two days later we start getting texts and messages from all these people, “I’m a manager, I want to meet up with you guys blah blah blah…” Tony: We had interest from some of the major labels, it was crazy. Jessy: So that gave us a bit of confidence so we decided let’s do this a bit more. Three days after posting the track we got invited to do a show in the Academy and we only had one song! We did it and we sold it out. Tony: After that sold out show we decided to become a band, before that we’d just been a collective.
So lads is there a debut album on the horizon?
Henoc: Nobody knows yet whether it’s an album or an EP or a mix tape. We have 25 tracks, something is in the works, it’s ready we just don’t know which form it’ll be in. Jessy: We keep adding more and more songs so it’s just a matter of sitting down and deciding which ones to use.
What’s the story with the name Hare Squead? Tony: There was rapper with an oval head and he used to call himself “Square Head” Henoc: And he used to make us laugh because his head is round, it didn’t make any sense! We loved his rapping though. Tony: We eventually started getting square heads, the

26 haircuts, not actual square heads! We couldn’t call ourselves Square Head so we messed around with the letters and came up with Hare Squead, we just swapped the squ and the h.
This Square Head lad won’t mind you telling this story?
Jessy: No he knows already, he hates us; he says we stole his name!
Who else has influenced you as a group?
Tony: Probably the one who has influenced us most as a group is Pharrell, we would love to do everything like him, he’s the big group influence definitely. Henoc: We missed his recent show in Marley Park because we were playing in Galway, which was a pity, would’ve been great.
Where would you like to see yourselves in five years time? Henoc: Hopefully the same career as Pharrell!
InTallaghtMaster56.indd 26
Who writes most of your songs?
Henoc: We all have an input in most of the music but we wouldn’t really sit down and write a song together. Jessy: When I write I like to sit in my bathroom or something, with an echo, on my own, I like to work under pressure as well. Tony: I think it’s better that we write individually and then bring it together as a group in the studio. I think it comes out better that way.
On your bio you say that you prefer not to use bad language because being wordsmiths is very important to you?
Jessy: I listen to all types of music but I think you can only go so far if you have profanities in your songs. I’m more interested in listening to beautiful lyrics than swear words.
Tony: It’s not something we have deliberately thought about and sat down and said: “No we can’t put curse words in our music.” It’s just something that comes naturally to us; none of us use bad language when we talk so it’s probably just come from that really.
Are there any particular themes you like to deal with in your music? Jessy: Anything and everything! Tony: Absolutely. I mean I could write a song from the perspective of a water bottle! We’ll all write about whatever comes into our heads.
If there was anyone you could work with, living or dead, who would it be?
Finally lads what are your plans for the rest of the year?
Jessy: We’re playing at the BodyTonic festival at the start of August then we’re playing at Electric Picnic. We’ll be on the State Magazine stage and we might be playing on the main stage depending on how we do on a 2FM competition. We’re going to go into the studio on the 7th August to record a track for it and if we win we’ll be up on the main stage which would be amazing. As regards more gigs well the minute the album/ EP is released then we’ll start organising shows. www.facebook.com/ HareSquead
All: Definitely Pharrell! Jessy: John Legend from a few years ago but not now he’s gone all mainstream. Alan Stone, a Blues artist, we’d would love to work with him. Henoc: Andre 3000 as well would be another one…

Walter the Wizard paid a magical visit to us here at the Square. The centre mall was packed with excited children and parents awaiting his show. Nobody was disappointed and everyone had their own wand to help Walter with his tricks on the day. Walter amazed us all with his show where he made things disappear and then reappear just as quick. The children had the chance to have their faces painted on the day too.

Sq. Magazine Urban Chic City Our final two weeks of Urban Chic City were a great success here at the Square Towncentre. Week four saw everyone get involved in some tattoo and nail art at our workshop. Customers could also participate in some jewellery making. The final week was very creative as we learnt how to create brilliant cartoons and also make glow in the dark bedroom decorations.. There was something for everyone and plenty of fun was had by all. And although the Urban Chic City Summer Fan Club has come to an end for this year don’t worry as there is more fun just around the corner. This Saturday August 2nd sees our Pirate Party get under way from 12 noon until 3pm on the Centre Mall. This event is then followed by our highly anticipated Seaworld Experience on August 23rd from 12pm-3pm. Everyone is invited to come along to yet another FREE event at the Square Towncentre.
Abrakebabra & Share A Coke Family Fun Day. Abrakebabra located on Level 3 held an exciting event alongside the share a Coke team last week. There was a massive prize wheel on display in the car park which allowed lucky members of the public to spin to win a prize. The prizes ranged from free personalised Coke cans to buy one get one free on a number of items at the Abrakebabra restaurant and many more. The team handed out balloons to children on the day and there was even a guest appearance from our very own Cheeky Monkey. The Abrakebabra monster truck also generated a lot of interest with people getting up close for a picture beside the brightly coloured motor.
RSA, Checks It Fits Last week we welcomed the team from the RSA (Road Safety Authority) as well as members of the An Garda Síochána to the Square Level 3 car park. The experts were on hand to show the customers how to ensure their children’s car seats were safely and securely fitted in their vehicles. At present, 3 out of every 4 child car seats are incorrectly fitted in cars. If a seat is not correctly positioned it can lead to serious injury or death in the event of a collision. The Road Safety Authority’s “Check it fits” service was fast and convenient and free of charge. The RSA ‘Check it Fits’ Service will be travelling all over Ireland on a full-time basis, checking child car seats everywhere it goes.

EASONS PASSING THE TEST ON BRINGING YOU ALL YOUR BACK TO SCHOOL NEEDS It’s that time of the year again when parents must get themselves organised for the new school year.
The most important piece of equipment to decide on is the school bag. It’s a choice that will more than likely be chosen by your child due to its colour and design, but it’s up to you to check its practicality. School books are next on the list. Be sure to be as early as you can with your purchases as the end of August tends to get really busy and certain books tend to sell out fast, the last thing you want is to be spending your last few days of peace running around.
Next is the dreaded book covering, not to worry we have From books to pencil cases you covered literally! It’s the copies that tend to weigh down the school bags on those trips to and from school but they are a must. A4 refill pads, feint ruled exercise copies, graph paper, business notebooks, hardback notebooks, and sum copies are all available in store. Make sure to stock up on all the different types of copies required for your child’s class/year. Last but certainly not least on list is the stationary. There’s a huge range of products available within store. The standard items are the likes of pens, pencils, highlighters and other writing equipment, along with rulers, protractors and compasses etc. Get into Easons on Level 2 today to stock up or check out http:// www.easons.com 31/07/2014 01:27

LET’S BE COPS By Rachel Lynch
Let’s Be Cops is set to be one of the biggest comedies of the summer.
HERCULES By Rachel Lynch
This summer’s Hercules is directed by Brett Ratner and stars WWE icon Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) as the main man himself. Another few names to note throughout that appear are, the beautiful Irina Shayk who plays the sultry love interest of Hercules and also Home and Aways heartthrob Steve Peacocke (Brax) who plays the role of Stephanos. The film cost over $100 million to get to the big screen, but having seen the film this week I must say it was money well spent. The story tells of Hercules the son of Zeus and the greatest of the Greek heroes, who has just completed his twelve labours. He is now a mercenary for hire and he’s called to train the troops of King Cotys and fight the war lord Rhesus,
InTallaghtMaster56.indd 36
who is killing the innocents of Thrace. Hercules participates in many bloody battles along the way with a series of legendary creatures, amongst them the nine headed Lernaean Hydra, the Nemean Lion, the Erymanthian Boar and the three-headed dog Cerberus. It’s not just the battles or the romance that will keep you on your toes throughout, it is also the imagery the film projects. Yes you are watching a movie that tells a story from hundreds of years ago and the setting conveys this, yet it still comes across as a modern day 21st century film.
It’s directed by Luke Greenfield and tells the story of two thirty year old friends Ryan (Jake Johnson) and Justin (Damon Wayans Jr.) who have been invited to what they believe to be a fancy dress party. The lads get hold of two cop uniforms, as they arrive at the party they realise that it is in fact a masquerade party.
After a while the two step up their policing and find themselves driving around in a replica cop car and have even installed a police radio to which they are answering calls for assistance. But their fame is shortly lived as these new heroes get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives.
Their embarrassment and disappointment leads them to walk through LA dressed as cops. It is then that they realise the life of a cop is a whole lot more enjoyable than they could ever have imaged. It’s not long before the pair become neighbourhood sensations. People adhere to their demands and beautiful drunk women want to be in pictures with them.

detective meets a Castilian renegade priest who explains that he is trying to help the lady who he believes is possessed.
The director Scott Derrickson is the man behind the ultimate true story horror The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
He tells Detective Sarchie of the implications to his own family should he get involved in the case. Sarchie initially laughs off the priest’s comments but it isn’t long before he starts to agree there is a demonic presence surrounding not just the lady in question but also himself.
The film follows the story of Detective Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana) and his undisclosed police files. The New York cop is called to an incident one evening at the Bronx Zoo. Power throughout the zoo is lost and a woman has been caught on CCTV acting suspicious and is now missing. He and his team eventually find her in a distressed and somewhat demonic state.
Together, they work to solve the case and combat paranormal forces working against them as New York slowly descends into chaos. Can he save the victims before it’s too late?

TCA Golf Tournament
We headed down to Powerscourt Hotel to speak with the Irish celebrities who turned up to support The Tallaght Community Arts golf tournament organised to raise funds. The arts development organisation was set up in 1996 and works with local communities, schools and youth groups. Stars like Love/Hate’s Laurence Kinlan (Elmo), Brian Ormond, Bressie, Ken Doherty, Simon Delaney and Ronnie Whelan were just some of the names in attendance.
Simon Delaney How did you get involved in this today Simon?
Young Lar Kinlan, well when I say young he’s not young anymore. I’ve known Lar for years and Brian obviously for years and never turn down a game of golf. I was disgusted I had to leave the three kids at home this morning, it has to be done though it’s for charity. That’s what I said to my wife this morning, it’s for charity!
InTallaghtMaster56.indd 38
Laurence Kinlan
I grew up in the city centre where something similar was set up in Dublin 1 called the Belvedere Youth Club and what they done for kids around the area was great, keeping kids out of trouble and all sorts like what they do out in Tallaght.
How did you get involved with the Tallaght Community Arts Program?
I was only too happy to jump onboard because what the Belvedere Youth Club done for me in town was unbelievable
38 and I don’t think I would be doing what I am doing today if it wasn’t for them and also to help Dave and Jen out and obviously Tallaght.
Ronnie Whelan How did you get involved in the TCA?
Brian, yes Brian has done an awful lot with the charity. He’s always helped along the way when iv had the golf days and he asked me to come over and readily agreed because its great.
Do you play much golf yourself? Bressie
Brian Ormonde
How did you get involved in the TCA?
How did you get involved with the TCA?
There is a network of these charity golf tournaments. I have done a few for charities I work with, everybody just helps everyone out and does as many of these as they can at the end of the day they are great craic.
Do you play game yourself?
Not really no, I play a bit, I haven’t got the head for it I get very bored by the second or third hole, I just start eating. Alex Cooper is on my team today, who is a Welsh and Lions winger so we are probably not going to win but we definitely the biggest team, he’s 6” 5’ or something.!
I am good friends with David Webster, and I do a golf classic every year and I normally pick one charity but last year I decided to do three or four different charities and kind of spread the money around so I think I gave Tallaght Community Arts three or four grand last year and then David said could I do the same again this year and then I said why not do it all for Tallaght Community Arts.
Yes I play a lot of golf, handicap of eight now so I’m pretty crap but I enjoy playing especially when you come out to somewhere like Powerscourt where I have played a few times now and it’s brilliant being here.
Do you know who you are playing alongside today?
I’m with Barry Murphy from Apres Match and I don’t know who the other two unlucky people are that I will be playing with but we will have fun, it’s only for fun and to raise money for charity so that’s what it is all about.
Who’s on your team today? There is myself, Mario Rosenstock, Alan Clancey who is one of the sponsors of today and our fourth player is Willie O’Reilly.

39 Gangs Gaining Critial Acclaim Ex-Oasis legends Gem Archer and Andy Bell had some very complementary words for local band Gangs on Soho Radio London last month.
Local Band Morrissey And Marshall Returned Home To Ireland At The Very Special Request Of President Higgins! The President welcomed the band to Áras an Uachtaráin to perform tracks from their debut album, And So It Began’ at the Presidential Garden Party held last month. Darren Morrissey and Greg Marshall are living proof that becoming an overnight success takes a lot of work and a little bit of charmed luck! Since the duo left for London in 2011 they’ve scored a record deal, performed with global superstars and for Heads of State! The band released their debut album in March and performed on RTE Radio 1’s live coverage from Windsor of The President’s historic visit to the UK.
The pair is quoted as saying “we weren’t making music like that at their age” with Gem Archer going on to say that the Tallaght lads are very accomplished for teenagers. The duo was very impressed by the Gangs track that was played for them. Gangs lead singer Jordan Curtis said “It’s great to be endorsed by two music greats like them. We’re all big Oasis fans and I love what they have put out with Beady Eye too.” Band mate Johnny was also delighted! “We want to be big, big like Oasis big, so to hear them say that we are accomplished artists and that is a real boost, we know we are on the right track,” he said. Their Back To School Tour will see them do 2 dates up North, 3 in London and 2 in The Academy 2 in Dublin, one of which is an u14’s show.
They received a call from the Office of The President shortly after, congratulating them on their album release and inviting them to play at the Aras.

Music SINÉAD O’CONNOR I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss By Linn Heldal
BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB Come To
By Gwen Taylour
O’Connor is one of the strongest women in pop-music and controversial as they come. With a career spanning over almost three decades, she has been making headlines with scandals, mental illness, suicide rumors, struggles and heartbreak. She speaks her mind and refreshingly doesn’t give a damn about what anyone thinks of her unorthodox appearance. She is as strong as she is fragile, and as innovative as she is traditional. And her voice is just as sensitive as it is powerful. Rumors and speculations have flourished – there is almost something mystical about Sinead O’Connor - but one thing that is crystal clear, is that she leaves her audiences spellbound with her alluring and highly distinctive voice. Unurprisingly, she doesn’t fail to deliver with her 10th studio album I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss. It’s a heartfelt and honest album, consisting mostly of love songs, but not the dark kind this time! It starts with the clear message in How About I Be Me (And You Be You), which is my favorite song of the album. It has a
straightforward sound that puts all focus on O’Connor’s voice, which works oh so well. The song is a little dig to her critics and it actually revisits the reaction to a humorous article O’Connor wrote for the Irish Independent in 2011, where she was advertising for a man. With upbeat Dense Water Deeper Down, she continues the positive feel and sings about a man which makes her “Think about him every night, I fall asleep holding my pillow tight.” The brass section and hint of gospel also contribute to the good vibes. Your Green Jacket is back to the simplicity, with drums, bass, guitar and keyboards and her voice in center. There are not too many electronic/digital sounds on this album, something that I think is actually rejuvenating these days. The same goes for The Vishnu Room and Harbour, where the violins and mandolin also adds a welcome Irish flavor. The latter gets heavy towards the end, with dirty rocking guitars. It’s getting reallu funky with the horns in James Brown, which is performed by none other than the legendary saxophonist Seun Kuti. She manages to get me in the James Brown mood with this one (I Feel Good).
Come To is the fourth album taken from Bombay Bicycle Club’s fourth album So Long, See You Tomorrow, which was released in February this year. The London indie rockers’ reputation has been building steadily in the past few years, culminating in their most recent album reaching number 1 in the UK (though only number 8 here). Anyone with an ear to the charts will recognise Jack Steadman’s trademark vocals from the off, but Come To sees the band going for a slower, less frantic pace than some of their previous hits. But the laid back vibe doesn’t last too long, the song builds gradually to a more recognisable layered orchestral sound. There is a pleasingly epic quality to a lot of their songs, and this one is no exception. The slightly discordant nature of Steadman’s voice and the haunting backing vocal layered over sweeping strings feels euphoric, winding up simply as everything quiets down to just the lead vocal at the end. Bombay Bicycle Club play Electric Picnic this month and tracks like this make me sorry I’ll miss it this year!
Then there is the single Take Me To Church, which, even with its super catchy chorus and amazing lyrics, can still be a bit breathless at times. Ballads 8 Good Reasons and Streetcars are two other favorites of mine. She manages to put a positive twist on her negative feelings - a lovely way to finish off. I think some minds will be blown with this album - this is O’Connor doing what she does best. InTallaghtMaster56.indd 40

one of these screens and the one that is the biggest obstacle for most people will be the price. LG currently sells a 55 inch OLED TV that they call “pencil thin” for $9000, that’s roughly €6654. The fact that they are moving from pencil thin to paper thin, I imagine won’t bring the price down.
ROLL UP, ROLL UP FOR THE FUTURE OF TV By Colm O’Muirí
Television on the move has been something you can do for the past few years with your tablet, phone or laptop. However in a few short years you will be able to add your television to that list. LG recently showed off two new 18 inch OLED (organic lightemitting diode) panels each with 1,200 x 800 resolution that you can fold up like a poster. The two panels themselves as you can imagine are very thin, one is so thin that it is actually transparent. InTallaghtMaster56.indd 42
This is great news and the word from LG is that this is only the beginning and that they will be able to produce an even bigger, flexible and transparent OLED. LG have said that they are “confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches”. Imagine going to collect a TV and being able to put it into something the size of a poster holder as opposed to struggling to get it into the back of your car. The fact that LG hope to be able to put this technology into its TV’s by 2017 is amazing and hopefully they won’t stop there and they will put it into its range of phones and tablets as well.
televisions that use the type of technology used in theses screens can be easily hidden on your walls at home, or even in work. They also have better clarity than existing LCD TVs; a current LCD has 10 percent transmittance whereas these screens have 30 percent transmittance. Everyone loves a clearer picture. There are a few things that could stop you getting your hands on
LG are not the only company currently working on this type of technology, Samsung, Nokia and Apple have also been hard at work trying to create flexible screens for both your smartphone and tablets. However LG seems to be in the forefront with the announcement of theses OLED screens and the flexible smartphone the GFLEX, which they debuted earlier this year. These types of screens seem to be the way forward in television technology following on from the curved screens which are currently hitting the market. Hopefully in the near future moving televisions around won’t be the awkward chore that it is today.
Another interesting fact about the screens is that 31/07/2014 01:11

Game
THE SWAPPER By Colm O’Muirí
The Swapper is a puzzle-platformer video game which was released for Windows last year and is now set for release across Mac, Linux and all PlayStation platforms.
SACRED 3 By Colm O’Muirí
Sacred 3 is the penultimate game in the action role playing series following on from the prequel game Sacred Citadel. This is a Hack n Slash game that focuses on co-op gameplay with a maximum of four players being able to team up in online and local multiplayer modes. You will have to choose from four possible species to play as; they are Seraphim, Safiri, Ancarian, Khukuri and Malakhim. Depending on whom you choose to play as they will have their own unique skills and weapons that can be upgraded to match the players own combat style as you progress through the game. Even though this is a co-op game you are also going for InTallaghtMaster56.indd 44
the victory and must outshine your teammates in epic battles as the wins are shared, but glory can only belong to one.
After its release on Windows last year the game received near critical acclaim, and there seems to be no reason why it won’t be the same this time round. In The Swapper you take control of a person stranded on a damaged space station who is looking for any means of escape. In doing so you
Fans of the series are going to be familiar with all the features in this game however there are one or two new ones such as weapon spirits. Players will be able to enhance their weapons with weapon spirits and something which is sure to please fans is that certain weapon spirits can take the form of previous characters from the Sacred franchise. This will certainly help players of Sacred 3 in their fight against
the hordes of evil from the oppressive ruler of the Ashen Empire Zane Ashen. The game is due for release on August 1st on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

must collect orbs that you can use to activate certain doors on the space station, this allows you to progress further in the game. The game is set in the furthest reaches of space where players wield an experimental device that is able to clone the user and lets you swap control between the clones and the user. Players are dropped into a character that is as mysterious as the world he is in, and of the device itself. One of the many features of the game is that all of the art

in the game was constructed using clay models and other everyday materials before they were transferred into the game. The game is very creepy and one of the main features of this is its isolation, like the films Alien and Solaris. The game was originally set to be released in May, however the studio who is adapting the game from PC over to PlayStation felt that the Vita and PS3 versions where not “up to scratch. Hopefully any of those problems are all fixed as this looks a great, complex and very challenging puzzle game.

Motor HONDA ACCORD By Rachel Lynch
2014 saw the introduction of the new Honda Accord. The 8th generation Accord is visually beautiful and the drive itself is right up there with some of the best I have test driven before. The new model sees power and style meet economy and reliability. Honda is known for their advances in car technology. First to note would be the improved chassis, powerful new engines, the automated safety features and the refined suspension. Visually the car will tick the boxes of many, it has an appeal unlike a number in its class, it’s sporty yet spacious enough to be a family car too.
InTallaghtMaster56.indd 46
Honda has proved time and time again that their interior come second to none. As you can imagine it’s extremely modern. Positioned on the centre console is a rotating multi-jog dial which allows you to control a series of functions, including audio and Satellite Navigation. An innovative Voice Command feature means you can also ask for directions, using recognised commands. The ‘talk-back’ directions help you to find your route. Also, to assist your vision when parking, the Rear View Camera displays what’s behind you through the Satellite Navigation screen. Powering the Accord is Honda’s renowned 2.2 i-DTEC diesel engine producing 150 to 180PS, yet thanks to advanced engineering it produces CO2 from just 138g/km for Band B annual road tax of €280 on certain models.
For those seeking maximum driving pleasure, the New Accord Type S 180 is the performance flagship of the Accord Range. The Type S 180 offers a powerful i-DTEC diesel engine producing 180bhp. Matched to class-leading levels of standard equipment and a range of exterior styling upgrades, the Type S 180 is a car you simply have to drive. There are a number of ranges that offer something for everybody, from the sporty Type S to the luxurious EX. They all come with levels of specification unheard of in rival cars. The Accord has a starting price of €32,995 which may be slightly out of the price bracket for people investing in a family car but if it’s reliability and style you are looking for well then this is the car you should consider. Book ALICE MUNRO Too Much Happiness
By Gwen Taylour
This collection of short stories was the perfect foil to the detailed dense narrative of the A Song of Ice and Fire series I have been reading for the past few months.
humiliating seduction, reacts in a clever if less-than-admirable fashion. Other stories uncover the “deep-holes” in a marriage, the unsuspected cruelty of children, and how a boy’s disfigured face provides both the good things in his life and the bad.
Much as I love George R R Martin, I felt the need to take a break after reading through the harrowing “red wedding” and Alice Munro’s writing came as a welcome change.
And in the long title story, we accompany Sophia Kovalevsky, a late-nineteenthcentury Russian émigré and mathematician, on a winter journey that takes her from the Riviera, where she visits her lover, to Paris, Germany, and, Denmark, where she has a fateful meeting with a local doctor, and finally to Sweden, where she teaches at the only university in Europe willing to employ a female mathematician.
I am never quite sure how I feel about the medium of the short story, sometimes feeling cheated when they end before I get the closure I feel I deserve. But Munro writes them very well, giving enough of a back story that you care about the character and then in some cases, throwing a curve ball that diverts the narrative from where you were expecting it to go. In the first story a young wife and mother receives release from the unbearable pain of losing her three children from a most surprising source. In another, a young woman, in the aftermath of an unusual and
With clarity and ease, Alice Munro renders complex, difficult events and emotions into stories that shed light on the unpredictable ways in which men and women accommodate and often transcend what happens in their lives. I really enjoyed most of this book, and the way similar themes ran through the stories, such as several of the characters were interested in wood and woodworking. I do however have a confession to make, I didn’t finish reading the whole book. The last story was a step too far. In the context of the other more relatable stories I just couldn’t keep track or feel enough for the characters to keep reading. That aside, I think Munro is a really talented writer and I would certainly read more of her work.

About The Author Alice Ann Munro is a Canadian author writing in English. Munro’s work has been described as having revolutionized the architecture of short stories, especially in its tendency to move forward and backward in time. Her stories have been said to “embed more than announce, reveal more than parade.” Munro’s fiction is most often set in her native Huron County in southwestern Ontario. Her stories explore human complexities in an uncomplicated prose style. Munro is the recipient of many literary accolades, including the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature for her work as “master of the contemporary short story”, and the 2009 Man Booker International Prize for her lifetime body of work. While Munro announced her retirement after the publication of The View from Castle Rock in 2006, the books have continued to appear at roughly the same pace, with Too Much Happiness in 2009 and Dear Life in 2012. Munro’s second husband died in April of 2013 and she divides her time between Clinton, Ontario and Comox, British Columbia. She is 83.

Business Mr Price Branded Bargains Announce New Store For Tallaght Mr Price Branded Bargains announce the opening of a new store at No.1 Airton Road, Tallaght in midAugust which will create 15 full and part time jobs in the area. In addition, these premises will serve as the new corporate headquarters for the Mr.Price buying and support teams. Mr.Price is a 100% Irish owned discount retailer and the new Tallaght store will bring the number of stores to 17, in 10 counties across Ireland, with a staff of almost 300. They also plan further expansion in 2014 and will have opened an additional 5 stores around the country before the end of the year.
Crowdfunder Kickstarter For Irish Launch Kickstarter, the global crowdfunding group, plans to open up an Irish Website in the near future. The decision to set up an Irish dedicated site will make it easier for Irish users who until now have otherwise had to sort through the administration of either the US or UK site. According to the Irish Independent, there have been 90 Irish projects launched on Kickstarter since its inception,
Rachel O’Toole Marketing Manager said: “We have been working on this move to Tallaght for some time and we’re eager to bring Mr.Price and all his bargains to the Tallaght community. The HQ team are looking forward to the move into the new offices.”

The ten Irish SMEs are out of a total of 155 from 21 countries (EU Member States or countries associated to Horizon 2020) who will each receive €50,000 to finance feasibility studies to develop their innovation strategy. In addition, SMEs can benefit from up to three days of business coaching. In total, there were 2,666 applications for the first grants.

with a majority reaching their pre-determined target. There have been 48 successful projects, 38 unsuccessful projects, and four projects still waiting to reach their goal. Kickstarter has established itself as one of the largest of its kind in the world and since its launch six years ago, more than USD1bn has funded more than 650,000 projects, including the Oculus Rift virtual-reality headset. However, news of the American company setting up in Ireland in a matter of months might prove to be a major challenge for indigenous crowdfunding websites in the country such as Fundit and PledgUp.
Maire GeogheganQuinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, said: “The response to the new SME Instrument is encouraging. There is clearly demand out there for this kind of support. We hope many of the business plans being financed will mature to become real products and services, generating growth and jobs for our economies. We want the champions of innovation to grow!” The SME Instrument is a key element of the funding for small businesses available under Horizon 2020.
Star Wars 7 To Shoot On Skellig Island The Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed to that Skellig Michael, a remote rock off the coast of Kerry with an ancient early Christian monastery, will be used as a location for the next Star Wars movie. The spokesperson added that this production is being fully supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and the Irish Film Board.
Worth around €3 billion over seven years, it offers fast and simple grants for business innovation feasibility studies (Phase 1) and demonstration projects (Phase 2). Investment-mature concepts can in addition benefit from business development advice and other support services (Phase 3). Through the SME Instrument the European Union wants to finance the most innovative small companies, with a high growth potential. The application process is easy but only the very best projects can expect to receive funding. Eligible topics are set out in the Horizon 2020 Work Programme on ‘Innovation in SMEs’.

51 Wi-Fi More Important To Hotel Guests Than Hot Water, Breakfast And Parking
Facebook, Twitter Test Their Buy Buttons Facebook and Twitter have recently tested the waters for their new e-commerce ventures. Facebook has unveiled a new test click-to-purchase product. Members on desktop computers or mobile devices will be able to click a “buy” button to make purchases through advertisements or other posts on the site, the company said today in a blog post. The service is being tested with a few small and medium-sized businesses in the U.S, online magazine, AdAge reported. In its blog post Facebook said, “We’ve built this feature with privacy in mind, and have taken steps to help make the payment experience safe and secure. None of the credit or debit card information people share with Facebook when completing a transaction will be shared with other advertisers, and people can select whether or not they’d like to save payment information for future purchases.” Twitter also had its own piece of marketing news: it plans to acquire CardSpring, a San Francisco-based startup that allows developers to write applications for credit cards, discount coupons and other payment systems. Its platform is aimed at linking e-commerce with brick-and-mortar sales. Online shoppers can collect sales offers, synch them with their credit card and then collect them at stores. For Twitter, the company offers an existing payments infrastructure that is not built solely around impulse purchases.

In a recent survey of hotel guests, 70% of Irish people said they are now ignoring the TV in their hotel room, and choosing to stream content through services such as Netflix on their own laptops, tablets and smartphones. Irish tourists and business travellers said that reliable Wi-Fi is more important than hot water, breakfast and parking. According to the survey undertaken by Wi-Fi service provider Bitbuzz; 70% of people would forego having a kettle in their room in order to have reliable Wi-Fi; 20% of people would go without breakfast; whilst 36% would ditch the TV. To 5% of people Wi-Fi is more important than hot water during a hotel stay. The survey, was conducted by Bitbuzz, Ireland’s leading independent provider of Wi-Fi. Bitbuzz now has over 12,500 hotel bedrooms in its network and over two million registered users across the UK and Ireland.
iPad Market Dwindling? Apple helped create the tablet market in 2010 with its first iPad. But growth has plummeted from 2012, as larger phones became more popular and people delayed replacing their tablets. And it is ceding market to mostly cheaper Android offerings from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Chinese manufacturers using Google Inc software. Another threat to iPad sales may come from within. Apple is expected to introduce a larger 5.5-inch (14.0-cm) iPhone in the fall. At those dimensions, the iPhone would begin closing in on the 7.8-inch (19.8-cm) iPad mini.

FAI Football For All South Dublin County Council in partnership with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) hosted their annual Football for All Sumer Camp. The camp takes place during the 1st week in July each year. 2014 marks the camp’s 5th year in operation and the numbers are increasing each and every year, this year had over 45 young people participating in the programme. The Football for All programme was initiated to assist and develop football opportunities for all players of all abilities aged 6 to 14 years in their local community and ensure its sustainability. Everybody regardless of their ability should have the opportunity to access football in their local club thus promoting an ethos of inclusion within the football community. Through the Sports and Recreation Office South Dublin County Council has taken this programme a step further by introducing a camp similar to that of the FAI Summer Soccer School’s – this allows children with a disability the opportunity to participate in a summer camp just like any other child in the county. They receive a full strip, ball and kit bag as they would on any other soccer camp – the cost of which is subsidised by South Dublin County Council. Mayor of South Dublin County Cllr Fintan Warfield attended the camp on Friday 4th July to present this year participants with their certificates of participation.

This was Pajo’s first bout since losing his world title fight against Javier Fortuna in December 2012 and he stopped Puerto Rico’s Noel Echevarria in the fourth round before a massive crowd at BB Kings Blues Club and Grill in New York City. The win sees Hylands’ impressive record improve to 28 wins from 29 with 13 KOs.
COYGIG The Irish under 19s women’s football team were sadly knocked out of the under 19s Championship semi finals 4-0 by the Netherlands at the Mjondalen Stadium. Manager Dave Connell, had already created history by, firstly, becoming the first Irish team to qualify for the Under-19 showpiece and, then, sweeping to the top of their group with victories over Spain, England and Sweden over a six-day blitz. Following the success of the Irish U-19 Ladies Soccer team in reaching the Semi Final Stage of the European Championship the Senior Team take on Slovenia in Tallaght Stadium on Wednesday 20th of August with a 7.30pm kick off as ever we at InTallaght in conjunction with the Square and Tallaght Stadium will have free tickets to the game keep an eye on our social media platforms to find out how you can claim your free tickets!
Shamrock Bowl XXVIII returning to Tallaght Stadium On Saturday August 10th, two of Ireland’s top American Football teams, the Belfast Trojans and Trinity College Dublin, will be returning to Tallaght Stadium for Shamrock Bowl XXVIII, the final of the Irish American Football Association’s Shamrock Bowl Conference (SBC). Following on from two thrilling semi-final games last Sunday (27th July), the Trojans beat the UL Vikings and Trinity College were victorious over the Dublin Rebels to secure their place in the 2014 Shamrock Bowl. This matchup brings some intense rivalry to bear as the Trojans’ only loss this season was against Trinity College, who posted an unbeaten record. This game is also a replay of the final of the 2013 Western European Championships, the Atlantic Cup, when the Trojans beat Trinity College 26-0.
The Leinster Lions Are Coming To Tallaght… Tallaght Stadium will host the Leinster v Ulster game at 4pm in what is a repeat of last season’s pre-season fixture which Ulster won 21-19 at Ravenhill. This is not the first time that a pre-season friendly has been hosted at the Stadium with Gloucester visiting before the 2012/13 season in a 33-22 win for the home side. Most recently the stadium hosted the Beauchamps Leinster Schools Junior Cup final between Blackrock College and Belvedere College in March.

53 UFC Stars Pay A Surprise Visit To National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght
Dublin Fail To Reach Previous Heights Dublin were comprehensively beaten by Tipperary in Thurles in the Quarter Final of the All Ireland Championship. It was another game in which the Dubs simply did not turn up.
Two of UFC’s stars surprised young fighters at the National Children’s Hospital in Tallaght when they were over for UFC Fight Night Dublin in the O2. American Cub current featherweight fighter Swanson and England’s middleweight Luke Barnatt called in to the outpatient department to meet the patients, sign autographs and take photos with the UFC championship belt. Coverage of the actual MMA showdown reached 600,000 viewers to watch Conor ‘The Notorious’ McGregor put on a spectacular performance to defeat Brazil’s Diego Brandao in his hometown.
They counted themselves lucky to be only 7 points behind as they trailed by 0-15 to 0-08 with all six Tipp forwards got on the score sheet. Losing by 0-9 to 0-18 Dublin were thrown a lifeline in the 47th minute when the Boys in Blue were awarded a penalty when Cathal Barret was adjudged to have fouled Paul Ryan in the Square The resulting penalty was expertly saved by the Tipp netminder and Conal Keany scored a point from the rebound, the Dubs misery was compounded 5 minutes later when John O’Dwyer scored the games opening goal at the other end. The was a sense of inevitability about the result after the penalty miss and this proved to be the case as Tipp pulled away and ran out eventual 2-23 to 0-15 winners, there was a lot of speculation after the game that this would be the end of the Daly era for the Dubs and the manager of 6 years refused to be drawn on his future after the game.

By Padraig Conlon
July started really well for the Hoops with an impressive victory at home against last seasons champions St Pats. However, disappointing home defeats against the two Louth teams have put a serious dent in Rovers title chances and left a lot of supporters questioning where the team is going. As this turbulent month came to a close we spoke with Assistant Manager John Gill who focused on the importance of getting behind both the manager and the team and ignoring the “hurlers on the ditch.” How’s the mood in the camp following a few rough home defeats? Things are good, we’re closing ranks, everyone is pulling together, we’ve trained well and everyone is looking forward to the next game. Some of the criticism directed towards Trevor and the players is totally uncalled for. Going into August and we’re still challenging for the title and still in the cups. This is a time for cool heads, our overall record is good and we’ve won our last eight competitive away games. The crowd have every right to express their feelings, of course they do, but I feel some of the criticism is too much. At Rovers the expectation is very high, and I would say rightly so, we’re expected to win every game. You’ve got to remember though we’ve a new group, a very young group, and patience is what’s needed right now. Of course there are things we need to work on and improve, we’re well aware of that as a group, but trust me those players are doing everything that’s being asked of them.
InTallaghtMaster56.indd 54
I still think we can win the league, hopefully when I’m talking to you three months from now we can look back on this and say this was the start of a massive run. The spirit in the squad is still good, obviously you’re going to have one or two players who aren’t happy when they’re left out, that’s normal, but in answer to your question there is great camaraderie in the squad, they’re a great bunch and fans can be assured those players are working hard to turn this around, as is the manager and all the staff.
Some of the players have received some personal abuse and that’s not on. I’ll take the abuse, give it to me, I’ve big shoulders, I can take it. But support the players, get behind the team. Of course you’ve experienced a similar scenario when you
were manager of Dundalk in 2006? Yes of course I’ve been here before. In my first season with Dundalk we lost our first four games and there was people who wanted me sacked, I was actually spat at coming off the pitch, plenty of people wanted my head. We then went on a 27 game unbeaten run and ended up losing the First Division title by one point to Rovers. It shows you that things in football can turn around in a season if you work hard and we are working hard, this season is nowhere near over yet.
What would you say to the fans who feel it’s time to bring in a new manager? I would tell them that Trevor has my full backing, I’m backing him to the hilt, I have every faith in him. I have worked with some of the best managers in this country, people like Dermot Keeley, Ray Treacy, Pete Mahon and he is up there with any of them. I’m not just blowing smoke up his ass. Ask any player who’s
31/07/2014 01:12
55 worked with him, they’ll tell you the same. His preparation is forensic, both tactically and technically and he’s a great man manager.
that really needed addressing at the club and Trevor has gone about fixing that alongside great work from Dave, Steve and Shane.
The club can’t keep changing managers. People should be careful what they wish for, that’s all I’ll say. Trevor is an excellent manager and I can assure you, without any doubt whatsoever, that he will be a successful manager.
The set up at Roadstone is really good and I’m looking forward to seeing the great young players that are going to come through at this club over the next few years.
He is only half way through his second season as a manger, he’s still learning his craft, he has to be given time, you can’t microwave success, good foundations have to be put in place and that is what Trevor is doing. If the fans could see the amount of work he is doing behind the scenes, he is building a football club, not just a team. The work he has done with the youth set up is excellent and you can see that work starting to bear fruit with the likes of Evan, Sean Heaney, Conor Dunne and numerous other young lads coming through this year. The youth set up was something
InTallaghtMaster56.indd 55
could say about Alan Cawley. Last year I managed him at Malahide and he refused to warm up in a game because I’d left him out. Why would you bother listening to Alan Cawley? He wouldn’t know much about winning anything, he wouldn’t win you a corner.
And saying he was “uninspiring?” What does he want? A Peter Kay type manager who’s cracking jokes after every match? It’s about running a football club and in my view Trevor is the right man for the job.
Are you enjoying your He’s a hurler on own job at the moment the ditch, who is John? he to be criticising Trevor? It’s easy Yes I’m loving it. When you love to sit there and criticize a football theres no better club manager isn’t you could be working at than it when you’ve Shamrock Rovers. We have never even the best facilities, the best and managed at most vocal supporters and I love working with Trevor who is a top level probably the best coach I’ve ever yourself? seen on the training pitch.
Before this job I’d actually turned down other assistant manager jobs with other league clubs because I felt the people managing the club mightn’t have complimented me and I mightn’t have complimented them but Trevor and myself compliment each other.
Finally John what did you think of Alan Cawley’s criticism of the club on Monday’s Soccer Republic where he said Rovers had “no identity” and the managers post match interviews were “dull and uninspiring?” I thought it was disgusting. I could drag a few skeletons out of his closet, I’ve a few things I

Sean Francis
Rovers, Dundalk, Sligo and Shels were all keen. Ray Treacy was Rovers manager and, I don’t know if you know this but Ray doesn’t fly, well he flew down to Cork to sign me and at the 11th hour I turned him down.
By Padraig Conlon
He went mad and said he was going to kill me! I had decided to go to Shels but that move never happened so I decided I’d better sign for Ray because after all he was from Sheriff Street (as he had told me himself!) so I moved up to Dublin.
You were unlucky that the spell you had with Rovers from 1995 to 2002 coincided with the clubs darkest period? Former Hoop Sean Francis played 144 times for Rovers from 1995 to 2002. We caught up with the ex striker to look back on his time at the club and discuss the current squad’s chances. How did a young footballer from Birmingham end up playing in Ireland? In the summer of 1991 I had just finished my first year with Birmingham City, Terry Cooper was the manager and the club came to Ireland on a pre season tour. I was injured for the tour and round that time Cobh Ramblers had become a scout/ feeder club for Birmingham so I went on loan there for three months to get fit. I enjoyed the spell, think I scored 5 in 9 then I went back to Birmingham for another season. I only made 12 appearances as the club got promoted from the 3rd to the 2nd Division. The chairman gave the manager more money to buy players InTallaghtMaster56.indd 56
and myself and 15 other lads found ourselves surplus to requirements. After that I went to Telford United in the Conference, Gerry Daly, who was an ex Ireland international and a great player, was the manager. After having been a pro for four years it was a bit of a culture shock to be working on a building site and being a part time player to be honest with you. After that I signed for Northampton, John Barnwell was the manager but I only played one game for them and after four or five months there George Mallerick, who was managing Cobh Ramblers rang me up and asked me to come over here. He offered me a month to month contract so I
So how did your move to Rovers in 1995 come about?
Yes, Rovers during that time was very up and down, very roller coastery, the club were nomads and it was very unsettling what was going on off the pitch. My own career at the club was also very up and down but I loved my time there. Even in those times, even though the club wasn’t winning anything, Rovers were still the biggest club in the country and a lot of pressure comes with that. Everyone wanted to beat us, it’s the same now, like with Manchester United in England everyone wants to beat them, and that can be difficult to overcome.
I played a season under George at Cobh and then Damien Richardson took over as manager in 1995. It was the start of a great relationship between us; I really liked him as a manager and he really liked me as a player. After a couple of seasons with Cobh there was a few clubs interested in me. To be honest I had my pick of clubs;
Some players were not able to cope with that pressure. But even though there were bad times I didn’t leave, I did enjoy it and I’m proud to have played for Ireland’s biggest club. I saw a lot of managers come and go during my time at Rovers; Ray, Alan O’Neill, Terry Eviston, Pat Byrne and Mick Byrne. Ray was a good tactician, a very
decided to come over for a few months, just for a change. Cobh had just been promoted and I had enjoyed my previous spell with them. I thought I’d only be there for six months but over twenty years later I’m still in Ireland!

Trevor has a great squad at the moment and some of the young players coming through have great potential but I think he maybe needs one or two more experienced players to bring them on, a few more with experience of winning the league. Trevor is building a club and that takes time, it would be crazy to panic now and change the manager.
and if they can put a run together they could get some momentum going. I think the B team is a brilliant move from the club and we should start seeing the benefits of it in the next three to four years.
Rovers have come so far from when I was playing, no other club in this country could have done that. The League of Ireland itself has also come on leaps and bounds, the standard of football has improved so much in the last ten years, as have the pitches! He is a brilliant coach and More Irish lads are moving from everyone you talk to in the game the LOI to the UK, I know not here speaks very highly of him. all of them are going to the top They’re still in the hunt clubs but they’re all getting good careers out of the game. One thing I’d love to see improve is the crowds at League of Ireland games, if we could just get the crowds going it would be a great league. I was reading Dunphy’s autobiography recently and he talks about how in the 50’s and 60’s here they were getting 30/40 thousand at league games! It’s hard to imagine that happening today but that is what the league needs.

I am really bored I hope this is just a fad He might stop if he’s ignored Are we nearly there Dad? He asked rather sleepily If he sleeps I will be glad I thought, rather guiltily Are we nearly there Dadeeee? He started to whine Why must he keep on and on at me I really feel like crying Are we nearly there Dad? I said yes, five minutes more It was a white lie, what a cad But at last, I heard him snore. Are we nearly there Dad? I said yes Son, eventually! “I just want to go home Dad!” he began screaming incessantly Are we nearly there Dad? Louder and louder he screams It’s been years since those trips we had But I still hear him in my dreams! Are we nearly there Grandad? my grandkids kids ask me now these days I do not find it too bad I’ve gotten used to it somehow!
SIMPLE By Christopher Kelly
Feels like there’s a dark cloud above my head. A dark cloud hiding the bomb that’s dropping. No sound of it yet. A swirl of smoke in front of my face. It can be overwhelming. Ash fills up the tray. My cigarette burns, it’ll go out before I do. Many already have, this one will too. I’m sure of it. Now I can hear it. The bomb that is. That always will be. In a perpetual fall. Sound of fridge buzzing out and then softens to its usual hum. Like happiness lingering on the periphery of rage, it’s there. Waiting for a good memory to get you laughing like an idiot to yourself, or just a gentle wave of emotion that rushes into your heart and fizzles at the very brim, then recedes. A nice break from the crashing feeling of rage, my natural state. At first there was a black space I merely drifted in. Kept myself grounded by clinging to the feeling of rage, it let me know I still could feel. Learned to live with it, walked hand-in-hand with it on paths we’d both created in that black space. Paths that led to a brighter future. Feel brighter now, not so dim anymore, like I can exist without the rage and it won’t resent me. Christopher is 21 and comes from Springfield.
