Welcome
Welcome to Edition 57 of InTallaght As the summer draws to a close we hope we find you all in great form. Since our last magazine we had some big news in the office this week when our colleague Gwen came back from her holidays engaged to be married! From all your workmates here at InTallaght we wish you and Michael the very best for your future together. In this issue we chat with Laurence Kinlan who plays Elmo in Love/Hate ahead of the return of the much loved show. The secondary interview this time is with young Wicklow band Children of The Son who are just back from LA where they’ve been impressing a lot of very important people in the music industry. We also have an indepth interview with new Shamrock Rovers manager Pat Fenlon as he starts out on what we hope will be a very successful spell as Hoops boss. All the other usual features are in their usual places and as always please feel free to contact us if there’s an event you would like us to publicise for you.

Songs from a Car Park Local theatre and dance lovers are invited to a special show on the roof top of The Square Town Centre as part of September’s Tiger Dublin Fringe Festival. The show, titled Songs From a Car Park, is a drive-in dance piece which is set in a car park. It is an immersive show about human need and escape that blends dance, theatre, music and a local marching band into a unique theatrical experience watched by the audience from inside a car. Commissioned by Rua Red South Dublin Arts Centre Songs From a Car Park is the brainchild of award-winning duo, choreographer Jessica Kennedy (Junk Ensemble) and filmmaker John McIlduff (Dumbworld). The project is the second commissioned strand between RUA RED and Jessica Kennedy, who was the RUA RED Dancer in Residence for 2012-2013. We spoke with John McIlduff to find out more about
what promises to be a very unique show. “We’re mid rehearsals in RUA RED at the moment so the piece is growing and developing which is very exciting. We’ve been joined by Eddie Kay, a long time collaborator and Marie Besnard, a dancer from Switzerland. “The process is always very collaborative. We build things up day by day in the studio. We’re always trying to come up with new things, always pruning away. “The production will be quite a unique experience for the audience. They’ll be watching from cars just as you would do in a drive in movie with the sound coming through the car radios. It also means that you don’t need to worry about the weather. If it rains the audience can just turn on the windscreen wipers. “The show is quite a mix up of things: dance, song, a marching band, roller skating but at its heart is an exploration of the delicate nature of humanity that pushes us to
need and reject in equal doses; struggling to save ourselves and self destructing at the same time.” This year’s Dublin Fringe will be the 20th festival since it started in 1995 and takes place from September 5th to 20th in various venues around Dublin city. It is a curated, multi-disciplinary festival and year-round organisation focusing on new and innovative approaches to the arts. It supports the development and presentation of new work by Irish and International artists of vision, nurturing artistic ambition and excellence across a range of art forms. An active curator, the Festival provides an environment in which participating artists challenge, subvert and invigorate their disciplines and practice. Tiger Dublin Fringe provides context for new work and demands audience engagement and dialogue. The scale and environment of the festival
12 broadens arts participation, playing a vital role in the fabric of Dublin and Irish cultural life. For 16 days the festival transforms Dublin into an exposé of great creative talent from around the globe. It is a platform for the best new, emerging Irish arts companies and a showcase for the best contemporary theatre and dance shows touring internationally. For artists, the Fringe facilitates an opportunity to innovate, to cross disciplines and boundaries and to find new ways and places to create work. Tiger Dublin Fringe, unlike many Fringes internationally, is a wholly curated festival seeking innovative and daring work that impacts, moves and invigorates its audience. Songs from a Car Park takes place at South Roof Car Park, The Square, Sunday 7th September at 6pm and 8pm. 16 TIKKA HOUSE
Tikka House is a new Indian Restaurant located in the heart of Tallaght. It’s known as Tallaght’s hidden gem and is within walking distance from the Square Towncentre at Belgard Square. The beautiful décor redefines customer’s expectations of Indian restaurants. The welcoming and warm layout will see you dine in comfort and surrounded by an eye-catching traditional design theme. The restaurant offers excellent value from their take away menu to their lunch, A La Carte, Early Bird and Sunday specials. There is something for everyone with an array of different choices for what suits your taste buds best. The A La Carte Menu has so many options available from lamb and chicken to vegetable biryani. There is also a huge selection of side dishes to choose from. The starters range from chicken tikka to tandoori jumbo prawns which are marinated with InTallaghtMaster57.indd 16
Indian spices and orange peel. The main course selection really impressed me. The menu lists special tandoori grill, prawn/fish, chicken, lamb, chef’s special and vegetarian headings, all of which had a number of dishes available. And if that wasn’t enough, the list of desserts really are mouth watering stuff, from homemade ice cream to cheesecake and Mississippi mud pie. If you are looking for a quiet night in but really appreciate good food well then why not try their Take Away menu? The choice of starters available include the Tikka House special meat platter, which I must say is delicious and an absolute must. It’s a simple and delightful way to savour the wonders of tandoor cooking. The platter is presented with an assortment of tiger prawns, chicken and lamb. Or how about the spicy chicken wings, which are marinated with yoghurt, cream and ginger/ garlic paste, cheese and white
peppers cooked in the Tandoor. There is also the Tikka House mixed vegetable platter. The lunch menu offers great prices and specials. Wraps start from €7.95 which also includes skinny fries, and the soup of the day is €4.95. The starters begin at an unbeatable €5.95 for Coblam Fish Curry, Lamb Rogan Josh for instance. Also worth noting would be the children’s special grill chicken with fries priced at just €4.95. The Early Bird menu is available from 5pm to 7pm and is priced at €18.95 per person which includes a starter, main course and dessert. Last but certainly not least is the Sunday Special which is served from 12 noon to 5 pm. It again is priced at €18.95 and includes a glass of house wine, glass of beer or glass of Prosecco, a starter and a main course. There is also a kid’s special which is priced at just €5.95. 21/08/2014 02:01

Laurence Kinlan
to us that not only no one was safe but that we really didn’t know what was going to happen next.
INTERVIEW By Rachel Lynch
InTallaght Magazine caught up with Love/Hate’s Laurence Kinlan who is set to return to our screens later this year to reprise his role as Elmo Creed on the popular RTÉ 1 crime series.
Well that’s the great thing about Stuart. Not that nobody is safe but that he doesn’t work on the popularity of a character. People were like “Ahh he must not have wanted to do it and that’s why they killed him off!” Of course he wanted to do it, Robbie would have kept doing it if it was there for him but he was quite happy to be killed off too because it’s what’s right for the show. Obviously you don’t want to be killed off and you want to be still involved but when it happens you have to just go with it.
His character has now become a household name and one of the more loveable lads of the show. Social media went into overdrive this summer when images were posted online of what seemed to be Elmo’s funeral fronted by main man Nidge (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor). Fans of Laurence were left shocked.
Do you think the show has proved that the gangster lifestyle is not a glamorous one?
Is this the last we will see of Elmo? We are unsure as to whether Elmo does meet a gritty death but one thing is more than certain, someone does die. More images posted online revealed a character coming to a gruesome end. They showed a hysterical Siobhan screaming from her fifth-floor balcony with an unidentified body lying on the ground. It had been speculated that the body was that of brain damaged Tommy (Killian Scott). At the rate actors have been killed off in the popular RTÉ drama, no one is safe. Laurence tells us of his year so far and what his plans are for the future.
InTallaghtMaster57.indd 18
So let’s talk Love/Hate, the final series? The final series?
Is it the final series? I don’t know you tell me? No I don’t think it is. For a year or two we didn’t know if it was and then after maybe the third year you go alright it’s definitely coming back. Last year we knew before but you are always kept in the dark so you never know if it is or not? You never look at the script at the end and go “Oh Jesus that’s an ending!”, it’s never really worked like that.
Is it always a shock when you read the script? Do you have a feeling of who is going to be killed? Do you know what? I tend to have an idea about other people because of my close relationship with Stuart [Carolan, the creator of Love/Hate] and he tends to keep me informed with things. But yes it does come as a shock for a lot of people that are killed off.
When Darren (played by Robert Sheehan) was killed off I think that really shocked the public. It showed
People ask all the time, “How do you feel about glamourising crime?” and we say to people “Well if showing losing a loved one or being taken away from your kids or being locked up for years is glamourising well then I don’t know anymore.” We show the harsh reality of it, I know as much as everybody knows it’s what we read in the papers every day, we aren’t telling lies and I think that is why the show has clicked so much with people. Because it is staying true to what they read and what they know.
Your character as Elmo has progressed over the years and you would be regarded now 21/08/2014 02:01

Laurence Kinlan as one of the main characters on the show. That must be great? Every different character has a different progression. I remember when I done the first series, I was always going to do it but they were just trying to find something that would be right for me and then when they went to do the second one I went off touring around America with a show so I couldn’t do it and Stuart was good enough to keep the character open for me, he didn’t kill him off. As the shows have gone on he has gradually gotten bigger and it’s great because it just means you are on set more having the craic.
How have you adapted to the people on the street do you get a lot of attention? People are alright, do you know, it would be different if people f*cking hated [Love/Hate] because you would get dog’s abuse. I mean you get called a rat now and then and I can deal with that but people, because they love the show so much, they are just genuinely excited to see you so it’s all good.
It must be fantastic to be part of a show that everyone loves and watches. No matter where you are from no matter what your background you are certain they will watch and love Love/Hate. See it’s not too farfetched. People don’t have to look too far InTallaghtMaster57.indd 21
to know that it is actually what happens. People always ask us “Was that based on this or that?” but it’s not it’s just so weird that when we shoot things it just so happens to have happened within that time frame. I mean we film a year before. But it is amazing that it appeals to everyone.
The funniest part of it all is that more people complained to RTE about the cat being killed than any of the other bloody murders filmed. Yeah which is mental, but let them.
know. The mid season launch is soon on RTÉ so they will have a more definite date then.
Do you know how the editing is going? Caffo rang me today, the director, and he said it was all going well, he’s only back from his holidays so he’s kind of knee deep in that and I think he is going to have a harder job this year because of scripts. We have had more to do this year than we have done any other year on the same time frame with the same budget so it’s going to be a lot harder for him this year.
Are you looking forward to the new series?
Any spoilers?
I am really looking forward to it coming out, we all are. I think this year has been more jam packed than it’s ever been so we are all really excited about that.
How many people die? Don’t tell us who just how many?
I’m really excited because how amazing the scripts were this year. I’ve been more hooked on them this year than I ever have been. I think it is going to be really brilliant.
So do we know the exact date to when it will hit our screens again? No last year was October, earlier than normal, which is November. I think it is going to be November. I think they are going to stick back to the normal schedule and have it back on in November. What date I don’t
No.
In general in the world? I don’t even know if anyone dies in Love/Hate!
What’s with the flowers? Everyone saw the flowers for Elmo? Flowers for me? I think I was going out on a date and some girl gave me flowers, you are getting nothing!
Finally whats up next for you? At the minute I have some time off, I’m playing loads of golf and spending time at home with the kids. I’m enjoying my time off.

Children of the Son
then we’d go back and write later on, that happened a good few times.
INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon
Jack: All three of us contribute really. When we were recording one of the songs in LA I said to Max “I don’t think this chorus is good enough.” So Warren said “Right, you have six hours to write a new chorus.” And we were thinking ok, the stress is now up because we only had a certain amount of time per song due to budget but we got it done and it was so much better.
Wicklow band Children of the Son have been earning rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic over the past twelve months. Consisting of brothers Jack (16) Max (20) and Art (18) Mathews and drummer Rob Kennedy, their first single Do You Really Want Me? debuted at number one in the iTunes Rock chart this summer. Earlier this year they got to work with legendary Aerosmith producer Warren Huart who said their hit single is one of the best songs he’s ever recorded in his 30 year career. Music industry heads have also been lavishing praise on the band and hopefully a major label deal is just around the corner. We met up with them for a very entertaining chat about the Children of The Son story so far...
You lads have been having a pretty eventful 2014? Max: Yeah the response to the singles has been great, really great to be honest. We put it up for pre order for six weeks beforehand and then we got to number one on the iTunes Rock chart in June. It was a shock because we were hoping to get top 20 and then we got to number one! It’s all been very positive, I don’t think we’ve had one negative review.
Since three of you are brothers I’m not going to ask how you got together, so how long have you been playing music together?! InTallaghtMaster57.indd 22
Jack: Pretty much from when we were small. (Points at Max) he’s been playing guitar for what, ten years now, Art started playing when he was 11 and I’ve always sung. We set up a band about two and a half years ago with a different drummer then Rob joined about 5 months ago so now the band is completed.
So Rob you’re settling in well being the new guy? Rob: Yeah really well, for the last few months I’ve been practically living with them so it’s hard not to settle in!
Being brothers is it easier to be honest with each other or does it create more friction?
Jack: It’s a bit of a Gallagher brothers scenario sometimes! Max: We don’t really fight, we all get on really well, there’s no real fighting. In the studio it is a very big plus because we’re not afraid to give our honest opinions.
Who writes the songs? Jack: Max is the lead writer. Max: Usually I’d bring in an idea and I’ll show it to Jack and then we’ll just work on it, develop it. Seldom would a song be finished straight away, it’ll usually be done over time, like even when we went to LA a couple of the songs changed quite a lot, we went into the studio with Warren and he’d tell us what we thought and
Had you ever worked like that before? Jack: A yeah to be fair we have, deffo, we work all the time, that’s what we do. We practice everyday, this is our life. I left school in first year to do this.
You’re not worried about your decision? Jack: Not at all, you just got to go for it! Life is short.
Are there any specific themes you like to deal with in your songwriting? Max: The thing with writing is we like to focus in on things that everyone can relate to, everyone deals with the same things, love, joy, loneliness, loss, and if you nail those things whether it’s Bob Marley or Bob Dylan, or if you go back to the renaissance it’s the same themes. Jack: It’s just comes down to writing really good songs, everything’s written on piano, as far as the melodies go, 21/08/2014 02:01
23 nothings ever written on three distorted guitars, so it can be stripped down.
How would you describe the sound of Children of The Son? Art: We all tend to have our different favorite bands. Jack: The bands who have probably influenced us the most are Kings of Leon, Oasis, REM, The Beatles, U2. I’d say our sound is just rock really, like the songs we recorded in LA they range from piano based ballads to Do You Want Me? to just a more Edge inspired guitar sound, it’s very diverse.
How did you end up working with producer Warren Huart? Jack: It’s a really funny story, Robert Knight the legendary rock photographer, came over about six months after the band was formed to photograph Max cause he’d seen a video of him playing the guitar, he didn’t know he was in a band. When he came back, about a year and a half later, we had this song called Colourblind and we showed it to Robert and he was like “Guys this is amazing, it’s a really really great song, I’ve a contact in the States I’m going to talk to who I think is really gonna like this.” And that was Warren. We went over to LA a few months later, we had to get our funds organized, and he told us he really wanted to work with us which was amazing to hear. Considering he has worked with Aerosmith, and The Fray, who would be a big influence on us. InTallaghtMaster57.indd 23
Max: Yeah it was ironic because the song that got him interested in us was Colourblind which is a song heavily influenced by The Fray’s song How to Save a Life.
What did you learn from working with him? Max: Lots of things, when you’re doing it everyday, in somewhere like LA, like for instance we were working with Jeff Babco who is a legendary session musician and he also plays the piano on Saturday Night Live, it was incredible to get to work with people of that calibre. If we needed a piano part laid down for Broken which is our ballad, we just called him up and he got it down in an hour! It was done on the same piano that Someone Like You by Adele was recorded on, in the same studio. Our engineer was also Adele’s engineer, he had the Grammy for Someone Like You on the wall. He was amazing at harmonies.
flying into the city and you could see everything, it was kind of like landing in Grand Theft Auto! Max: Yes that’s exactly what it was like. When we arrived we were near Santa Monica Boulevard and one of my first memories was hearing a car chase through the streets of the area we were going to be staying in, and we’re thinking, had we landed in the rough part? It turns out we were in one of the best parts, Gardener Street, just a street down from Santa Monica and only three blocks from the recording studio. Art: I still managed to get lost!
Hotpress editor Niall Stokes has been very complimentary about you guys saying he believes there’s no limit to your potential and is also on record as saying Jacks vocal reminds him of Van Morrison and Jeff Buckley? Jack: Yes Niall has been the biggest help to us, as a mentor, I mean he’s given us countless articles in Hot Press and got us coverage in other publications as well, he’s put our name out there so much and we’re so thankful to him for that. Jeff Buckley is actually one of my favourite singers, I get that comparison quite a lot, we’ve both had operatic training. It’s a great compliment to get compared to people like that.
Jack: Warren was amazing, we’d love to work with him again.
So what did you guys make of LA? Jack: I love LA, I’d move there tomorrow. Art: There was no rain! That does it for me. Jack: It wasn’t ‘til after we’d got back that it could have been like a dream, like a movie. “Ok I just woke up!” I think the best moment was when we were 21/08/2014 02:01

we like to focus in on things that everyone can relate to
InTallaghtMaster57.indd 24
21/08/2014 02:01
25 It’s not a comparison that freaks you out or puts you under pressure?
Jack: No not really, it’s just press as well, we don’t let our press get to our heads at all either, it’s really nice and it’s awesome that people think that but we never want to get big headed over anything, it’s all about the music.
Max: Ireland is known as a hard place to do radio because of how the play listing works on the big stations and how most of the songs being played are just the biggest Pop songs of America and the UK so there isn’t a lot of room for Irish independent music. Some of them have the little hour slots but that’s about it. Stations like Nova and East Coast are to be commended though for playing rock.
What are your thoughts on the irish music scene at present? Is their a debut album on the way guys? Max: I think there’s a lot of really good music coming out of Ireland at the moment, Hozier...
All you Wicklow heads sticking together! Max: (Laughs) Yeah he’s from Greystones, Wicklow is the new LA! Little Green Cars, Kodaline, Walk on Cars, we supported them a few months ago, just before they’d gotten their top ten and they’d just signed to Island. Jack: I think it’s in a very healthy situation at the moment.
Do you think the Irish media does enough to support Irish music? Jack: I think Hot Press is amazing, they are the main one, the only one really that put Irish music first, and it’s such a good magazine. It’s a lot better than many of the other music publications you get outside Ireland, not naming any names. But the press here have been really good to us.
InTallaghtMaster57.indd 25
Max: Yeah we’ve been working on the second half of it this summer and then hopefully later on in the year we’ll record it. Jack: The five singles we recorded in LA will make up an EP but we’re going to release them all as singles first. The album probably won’t be out till next year.
Finally, as regards gigs what have you got lined up for the rest of the year? Jack: Hopefully we’ll be doing the Electric Picnic again, we played it last year but we only found out four days before so we’re hoping the same thing will happen again this year! We’re doing a string of 16 gigs, we’ll be supporting Paddy Casey and Ham Sandwich in the INEC in Tipperary, that should be a really good gig, think it holds 3,000. Like the lads on www.facebook. com/ChildrenOfTheSon to be kept up to date with all their news and gig dates. 21/08/2014 02:01

Kealan & Friends Cycle For Hospice
The Hospice volunteers were located on the Centre Mall last weekend raising much needed funds. The team participated in a 24 hour cycle over two days nonstop. Their target is €80,000 which will fund a new program of night nurses to become available for the Hospice. Kealan Doyle from Seahorse Aquariums and a popular face around the Square looking after our beautiful Aquarium told us how he got involved with this great cause. “I got involved because my mum who is 70 years of age, cycled last month a 200 km cycle through the Wicklow Mountains. It’s a famous cycle called the ‘Wicklow 200’ and she was the oldest woman ever to complete the cycle. So she cycles all around the world raising money for the Hospice. She’s big into raising funds for this great cause as we have had family members who were looked after in palative care in the Hospice. The whole idea reflects for family reasons and we all want to give a dig out to raise much needed funds, obviously we have spent a lot of time here in the Square because of the fish tank too.”

InTallaght’s Padraig Conlon Presenting Richard Dunne with The Square’s Community Champion Award on behalf of The Square Tallaght.
Our Latest Community Champion Is Ireland International & Legend Richard Dunne We are delighted to announce that our Community Champion this edition has been awarded to Richard Dunne.
Local hero Dunne returned to Tallaght this month with his QPR teammates to take on Shamrock Rovers in a preseason friendly. While home he announced the sad news of his international retirement. He’s had an interesting club career. Having played schoolboy football in Dublin for Home Farm, Dunne joined Everton as a 15-year-old schoolboy in the 1994–95 season. In 2000 he joined Manchester City for a fee rumored to be in the region of £3 million. After nine years there he moved onto Aston Villa and then QPR to where he now plays.
After an impressive 14 years and 80 caps for Ireland the Killinarden native has called it a day. Dunne has provided something that Irish football has lacked for some time, a rock solid, Premier League standard centre half, a reassuring presence who gives confidence to those around him. It may be some time before we ever see a player like Dunne in an Ireland top again. Our Community Champion is awarded a €100 voucher for the Square Tallaght, Richard has kindly donated his gift to National Childrens Hospital here in Tallaght!

He is a worthy winner of the Community Champion Award and what a fitting way to thank him. He has been a loyal, brilliant servant and it will take someone special to replace him. From everyone at the Square Tallaght and indeed Ireland, thank you Richard.

THE INBETWEENERS 2 By Rachel Lynch
It’s been a long summer for fans of the Inbetweeners TV series as they awaited the official release of the second movie The Inbetweeners 2. The plot was kept tightly under wraps with only two short trailers released to the public. Finally it’s here, and I have to say I wasn’t disappointed. I don’t think anything will live up to the TV series but they have given it a good go with both the first film and this one just released. The famous four return for their usual mix of humour and chaos. Will, Neil and Jay’s girlfriends have all broken up with them since the events of the last film, and Simon wants to break up
InTallaghtMaster57.indd 34
with his girlfriend, Lucy, who he finds too clingy. Will and Simon are at university, Neil is working in a bank and Jay is taking a gap year in Australia. He emails the others, claiming that he runs a night club, lives in a mansion and is inundated with female attention, convincing them to join him there for a holiday. As you can imagine Jay’s tales don’t turn out to be as truthful as expected but the lads still have a holiday that not one of them will ever forget.
LUCY By Rachel Lynch
Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) is a 25 year old American woman living and studying in Taipei, Taiwan. Lucy finds herself tricked into serving as a drug mule for a Korean drug lord gangster. She is kept captive and a bag of the drug is forcibly sewn into Lucy’s abdomen. A fight breaks out between Lucy and one of her captors, as she struggles to stay calm she is kicked in the stomach, breaking the bag, releasing a large quantity of the drug into her system. So what is this drug she is carrying? It’s called CPH4, a compound created by pregnant women to help their child grow. Apparently, in extremely small quantities, the chemical is a godsend, but when half a kilo leaks while still inside Lucy’s body,
she begins to undergo a dramatic transformation. A transformation not her or her captors can understand. She begins to realise her newfound abilities grant her vast intelligence and strength like no other. After a matter of hours she can alter her own cells and processes psychic powers not known to the human brain. It doesn’t take long before she realises that all that mental capacity comes a steep price. Can she save herself with the help of others? Can she trust anybody?

SIN CITY A DAME TO KILL FOR By Rachel Lynch
Fans have been waiting nine years for Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s follow-up to 2005’s adaptation of Miller’s Sin City graphic novel series.
Mickey Rourke as Marv. Joining them are newcomers Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Haysbert (taking over for the late Michael Clarke-Duncan), and Josh Brolin, (plastic surgery turned his character into Clive Owen).
The movie was every bit as hyper-stylized as the source material, a simply twisted and violent comic book film.
What these new trailers do have are lingering shots of the trademark over-the-top violence fans of the original were expecting to see, from arrows through heads to severed hands, not to mention far more skin!
Very little has been leaked regarding the new film but we have been lucky enough to have been given a small teaser of two official trailers, which finds Rodriquez and Miller together again, and pulling no punches the second time around. Set both after and before the first movie, the sequel finds a few familiar faces returning, including Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson and scene-stealer

Music LA ROUX Trouble In Paradise
LANA DEL REY Ultraviolence By Rachel Lynch
By Linn Heldal
After singing herself into everybody`s heads in 2009 with mega hits Bulletproof and In for the Kill, from the tremendously successful self-titled debut album, Elly Jackson, aka La Roux, has been quiet for a long time. Her loyal fans have been waiting patiently for her ‘difficult second album’ to be released. Now, after battling anxiety attacks so bad that she lost the ability to sing over the last few years, the album is finally here. Even though La Roux’s former producer and bandmate Ben Langmaid has been replaced with producer Ian Sherwin, her burning desire for 1980’s bubbly synth-pop has stayed the same.
to drown a bit in each other and I feel they lack enough diversity to keep the listener interested. Pop-ballad Paradise is You stands still but is too breathless at the same time, something that makes me miss out on the heartfelt and sadly romantic lyrics. Tropical Chancer is a winner, with clean sound, energy and her voice in focus. Her soul is dancing with the Swedish Euro-pop band Ace of Base, which I was absolutely in love with in the 90’s. It also has a clear resemblance to Daft Punk/Pharrell Williams’s smash hit of last summer, Get Lucky. Let Me Down Gently was released as a single in May, maybe as a little request to the critics. It’s an emotional and soft slow-dance song.
The gold of the album is the first track, commercially appealing Uptight Downtown. In true La Roux style it gets stuck in my head immediately with its light-hearted sound and cool pop beats.
On social media, her hordes of fans are holding this record close to their hearts, which, of course, Elly Jackson deserves. The album can be a bit difficult to follow at times, but it has some pearls of songs standing out.
However the following tracks, Kiss And Not Tell, Cruel Sexuality and Sexotheque seem
Welcome back La Roux, we wish her all the best with her future dances and dreams.
InTallaghtMaster57.indd 38
She graced the front cover of the previous edition of InTallaght and this week sees us review her latest single, Ultraviolence from Lana Del Rays newest studio album. The song from which the album takes its name is placed at number two on her 14 track album and is just over four minutes long. The dark title track tackles domestic violence. Much like the book, A Clockwork Orange, where the term “ultra violence” originates, this song covers a number of relationship topics, like sex and aggression in some thrilling and disturbing ways. The piano and strings are somber enough to suggest Lana isn’t bragging when she describes herself as “filled with poison but blessed with beauty and rage”. Lana always attracts media attention one way or another and this latest single release is no different. So far the song has sparked plenty of debate online with feminist groups unimpressed with Lana’s take on this serious topic. Even with the backlash, it is a great song which sounds both tragic and beautiful, it’s the type of dark ballad she was created to make and it’s the style for which she has become famous.

Tech PLAYSTATION NOW By Colm O’Muirí
For a few years now with services such as Netflix or your Sky or UPC box you have been able to stream movies, however so far you haven’t been able to do that with video games. However this could all be about to change with PlayStation Now, a service that will allow you to stream games onto your PlayStation console. The service will let you stream a selection of games from the PlayStation One, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 on either a per game basis or via a subscription. There are also plans in place for the library of content to include PlayStation Four titles in the future. To avail of the service, which is currently only going through Beta tests at the moment and has no release date as of yet, you will need to have a PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, a PlayStation TV or a Bravia television. During the Beta test in the US and Canada there were over a hundred PS3 games offered to those who signed up to trial it. Some of the games are Killzone 3,
InTallaghtMaster57.indd 40
Deadrising 2, the Metal Gear Solid HD collection and also Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots to name but a few of the games which are available. I can’t wait to hear what PlayStation One games will be made available when the service does become available. Having recently purchased Abes Odyssey New and Tasty I can only hope that the likes of Crash Bandicoot, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, Tomb Raiders and Tekken will be equally as fun. Although Hogs of War would also be fantastic to play again if any of those games where available on the service.
Sony have said there will be no installation required like what is now for when you download or even purchase a game today. Multiplayer will be available but only on games which when originally released were multiplayer, and the same goes for online multiplayer, which is hopefully something they may look at in the future for games. As of now it is still early in testing PlayStation Now and the pricing structure for the service still needs to be worked out fully.
However at the moment you can rent games for four hours, seven days, thirty days or ninety days. Not all games are at the same pricing and although some are fair some are not so fair i.e. Final Fantasy XIII-2 for ninety days is $29.99. Hopefully by the time it is released the cost will be structured better. PlayStation Now looks a great service and hopefully Microsoft and Sega can work on something similar also, especially Sega for the Mega Drive games. However until then the PlayStation Now is the only option out there for game streaming in the near future. 21/08/2014 02:02

Game DESTINY By Colm O’Muirí
Destiny is a next generation first person shooter science fiction game with an open world setting from Bungie, the creators of Halo. Set seven hundred years into the earth’s future, in Destiny you are a Guardian of the last city on earth, able to wield some incredible power. This is a post-apocalyptic world which came about when the traveller came to earth, and gave earth its golden age. This did not last long however when an ancient enemy of the traveller found it on earth, and when trying to destroy it almost wiped out humanity. It is not clear what happened but that the survivors owe their lives to the traveller for saving them. In the days after the disaster Humans, Exos and Awoken found the traveller and built this city around it to protect it, from this the Guardians where born. A new era has begun and you
are a Guardian of the last safe city on earth. You must defend the last city, defeat earth’s enemies and explore the ancient ruins of the solar system to discover all that earth has lost to become a legend. Destiny follows the story of the Guardians of which there is three different types of Guardian and they are Titan, Warlock and Hunter each one possess different powers. Guardians must fight the earth’s enemies and they are the Fallen, Hive, Vex and Cabal. Destiny does not just take place on Earth but you also travel to the Moon, Venus and Mars on your quest. The game is not just a single player game, it also features multiplayer modes, co-operative mode, the epic campaign and more. Destiny will be available on the PS4, PS3 Xbox One and Xbox 360 on September 9th. Bungie have said that they hope that the Xbox One and PS4 version of the games will be in 1080p.

There are a lot of different modes to choose from including Garden Ops, Gnome Bomb, and Vanquish Confirmed along with a few others. Garden Ops is a cooperative mode where up to four players take control of the plants defending the garden against ten waves of zombie attacks, the fifth and tenth

Motor NISSAN X TRAIL By Rachel Lynch
The Nissan X-Trail is the newest SUV style car to hit the Irish market. I hadn’t test driven any previous X-Trail models beforehand but having reviewed the Qashqai last year I was informed the new X-Trail was basically an oversized version of that very model with a bit more off-road potential and the option of seven seats.
The X-Trail is no longer just your simple 4x4, it’s now got an efficient 1.6-litre diesel engine, a smart interior and a new focus on road manners. The X-Trail is available in XE, SV and SVE, although the entry level of this model is fantastic value for money with many of the “added extras” included. The interior is solid and the textures work well with the exterior of the model. All the controls are easily understood and more importantly where they should be. All models get a height-adjustable driver’s seat and front armrest which, combined with the airy, spacious cabin, which makes things very comfortable for those sitting up front. The back seats follow this trend and are just as spacious. If you do opt for the third row of seating you will be surprised by the excess room there too. It is a little bit cosier than the second row but you won’t be uncomfortable.
InTallaghtMaster57.indd 44
All of the technologies and driving aids available in Qashqai (Safety Shield, internet smart phone connectivity etc.) are also available with the X-Trail.
The X-Trail is on sale now and starting price is from €29,950. Check out www.nissan.ie for more information.
The exterior would lead you to believe this is a Qashqai, well a slightly bigger one. Nissan really have taken this model to a whole new level and the car bears no resemblance to the X-Trail we knew! There is a large panoramic roof that opens, unlike the Qashqai’s. The X-Trail will be sold in 190 countries and sales of 500,000 per annum are expected globally. The car is now available on the Irish market. Depending on your needs I believe the 5-seat frontwheel drive version offers the best in family motoring as the boot is fantastic with its clever division shelf system and of course the rear legroom is simply massive too and perfect for all ages. Saying that I still wouldn’t rule out the quality of the 7-seater for larger families.

Book LOUISE PHILLIPS Last Kiss
I really enjoyed Louise Phillips’s first two novels and when I heard there was to be a third I started looking forward to finding out how Kate and O’Connor would solve another grisly case. As I’m sure I mentioned in my reviews of Louise’s last two books, crime is not my usual genre. That being said, as long as something isn’t too spooky or atrociously violent, I’m usually happy to give it a go! Louise has made quite the name for herself since we first interviewed her for InTallaght magazine and I’m only too happy to help highlight local talent, especially when it is of this calibre. In this case, it is my pleasure. In a quiet suburb, a woman desperately clings to her sanity as a shadowy presence moves objects around her home. In a hotel room across the city, an art dealer with a dubious sexual past is found butchered, his body arranged to mimic the Hangman card from the Tarot deck. But what connects them?
By Gwen Taylour When criminal psychologist Dr Kate Pearson is brought in to help investigate the murder, she finds herself plunged into a web of sexual power and evil which spreads from Dublin to Paris, and then to Rome. Will Kate discover the identity of the killer before it’s too late to protect the innocent? But what separates the innocent from the guilty when the sins of the past can never be forgotten? Last Kiss, as should probably have been obvious from the title, is a much more sexualised story than her first two books. Both the crimes and the actions of the characters are much more sexually driven than before, and it delves into the psyche of a very disturbed mind. I really like the point-of-view style in which Louise narrates her stories and I think it works well in the telling of this particular story. The locations of this book are a lot more varied than the previous two, which stuck quite closely to Dublin and its surrounds. But the short trips to Paris and Rome lack none of the detailed description that makes it easy to imagine oneself at the scene. Kate’s personal life comes more for the fore in this installment and I think the novel benefits from this. If you’ve read the first two books, as I had, I imagine you would have come to like her character and be interested in how her life progresses. This is another great book from a talented author and I can’t wait for the next one!

About The Author Louise Phillips is the author of three psychological crime thrillers. Her debut novel Red Ribbons hit the bestseller list in the first week of release and was shortlisted for the Best Irish Crime Novel of the Year 2012, in the prestigious Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards. Her second novel, The Doll’s House won the award in 2013. Her work has been published as part of many anthologies and literary journals. She is also a winner of the Jonathan Swift Award, the Irish Writers’ Centre Lonely Voice Platform, and has been shortlisted for the Molly Keane Memorial Award, Bridport UK, and other awards. Last Kiss is her third novel. In 2009 Louise Phillips won the Jonathan Swift Award and in 2011, the Irish Writers’ Centre Lonely Voice platform. She has also been short-listed for the Molly Keane Memorial Award, Bridport UK, and long-listed twice for the RTÉ Guide/Penguin Short Story Competition. The Doll’s House, is described by crime writer Niamh O’Connor as ‘Chilling, mesmerising, gets under your skin and stays with you,’ and by the Irish Independent Newspaper as “a gripping, suspenseful story peopled with welldrawn characters.”

Traditional Toys Take On Tech
The latest figures for the number of new business start-ups shows that Ireland’s entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well despite economic and finance challenges.
Despite the digital revolution, traditional toys are still high on Christmas wish lists Ireland’s leading toy retailer, Argos, has unveiled its ‘top toys’ predictions for Christmas 2014.
Company start-ups rose 11% (1,518) in July 2014 when compared to the same month last year (1,371), according to the latest figures from credit and business risk analyst, Vision-net.ie.
Despite digital gadgets becoming an everyday essential for young and old, the younger generation still yearn for traditional toys with board games, construction kits and arts and crafts all making an appearance in Argos’ Top Toys list this year. While computer games and tablets are still as popular as ever on kids’ wish lists this Christmas, old favourites such as Lego and Monopoly are not suffering in
The company said this was the highest number of company start-ups for the month of July since pre-recession 2007 and equates to almost 49 new companies each day. The professional services sector was the most popular industry for start-ups in July, accounting for 22% of new companies, followed by wholesale and retail (10%) and construction (9%). The increasing stability in the construction sector is also reflected in the 47% fall in construction company insolvencies, when July 2014 is compared with July 2013. Dublin was the home to 51% of company start-ups in July, followed by Cork (8%) and Limerick (4%). In terms of insolvencies, industry sectors which experienced high levels of failure during the recession are showing increasingly resilience.

Ireland’s Havok in BioShock app game Havok, the Emmy award winning Irish games technology company, is providing its industry-leading Havok Physics and Havok Animation Studio technology for use in 2K Games’ groundbreaking narrative-driven action game, BioShock. This will be launched later this summer on the App Store. Developed by Irrational Games in 2007 with Unreal Engine 3, the original BioShock made extensive use of Havok’s Animation tools, which played an instrumental part in bringing fluidity to the disfigured denizens of Rapture. The game’s liberal use of Havok Physics also brought further immersion into the game world, even becoming a powerful weapon through the use of the in-game Telekinesis Plasmid. After its release, Bioshock quickly became one of the most critically-acclaimed games of all time, garnering universal praise from press and proving to be a huge success with the gaming audience. The 2K China team has brought this iconic gaming experience to iOS using Havok’s cross-platform toolset to achieve amazing parity between console and mobile versions, including the full dynamic gameplay and character interactions of the classic title from 2007. Seven years after its original implementation, the same robust Physics and Animation technologies ingrained in the original BioShock have seamlessly transitioned onto mobile platforms.

The European Consumer Centre in Ireland today warned online shoppers that it has received numerous complaints about rogue fashion retail outlets on the Web. The consumer watchdog said it has received a number of complaints about rogue dress sites over the summer. In many cases, problems arose because the website turned out not to be based in the country in which it was purporting to do business. In some cases, traders were found to be operating from outside the EU entirely. This can lead to difficulties as consumers often face long delays in delivery and may be left disappointed if their order does not arrive in time for the special occasion. In addition, European consumer rights may not apply to purchases of items from outside the EU, causing further difficulty for those seeking redress.
Samsung tries to reinvent itself As its smartphone sales stutter and a generational leadership succession looms, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is under pressure to reinvent itself - to be more innovative, but not lose the rigor and focus that made it a global powerhouse. One effort this summer to foster a more worker-friendly environment and a more creative culture is to allow staff at its main Suwon campus south of Seoul to wear shorts to work at weekends. Working hours are more flexible, and female staff can take maternity leave without worrying about job security.

51 Ladies football going Continental! Continental Tyres and the FAI have announced a partnership that will see the German-based tyre manufacturer become an official partner of women’s football in Ireland. In addition to becoming the main supporter of Irish women’s football, Continental has been named as the title sponsor of the Women’s National League which will be rebranded as the Continental Tyres Women’s National League. The company will also lend its name to the Continental Tyres Women’s FAI Cup, the Continental Tyres Women’s Senior FAI Cup and the FAI’s Elite Camps that foster the development of emerging football talent. The Continental Tyres Women’s National League new season kicks off on Sunday August 24. John Delaney, CEO of the Football Association of Ireland, welcomed the new partnership: “We are very happy to bring Continental Tyres on board as official sponsor of women’s football in Ireland. Through the FAI’s Women’s Football Development plan, a lot of work has been done to grow participation numbers at all levels and that has paid real dividends. Continental Tyres has a strong track record of association with the women’s game internationally and they will make excellent title sponsors of our National League and Cup competitions to help us bring the women’s game forward.” The Continental support for women’s football in Ireland will be underpinned by the strapline: Getting you to the game safely’ and, as a leading manufacturer of premium tyres, the company will be using the sponsorship to spread the word in relation to the importance of tyre safety: tyres are a car’s only contact with the road and we neglect them at our peril.

Leinster sign Rabbitoh Leinster have made a new addition to their squad ahead of the 2014/15 Season with the signing of centre Ben Te’o from the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Te’o, who has played with the West Tigers and the Brisbane Broncos in the past and was selected in this year’s State of Origin three game series with Queensland in Rugby League and is making the switch back to the Union Code! Leinster Coach Matt O’Connor welcomed the signing and looked forward to his arrival: “Ben is someone that we have taken an active interest in for some time now in particular as he made his intentions to change codes some time ago,” O’Connor said. “I was home during the summer and met with him a number of times. He is keen and eager to make a lasting impression at Leinster and to develop into a world class rugby player. He is a dynamic and explosive ball carrier and that physicality will enhance our offering both in attack and in our defence.”

INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon
We sat down with new manager Pat Fenlon to discuss his first two weeks in the job and his plans for the club going forward. Because of space constraints we are only able to bring you the sections of our chat that deal with The Hoops but if you want to read the second part of the interview where Pat talks about the condition of the League of Ireland, his own thoughts on improving it and the managers who have influenced his career, among other things, please go to www.intallaght.ie
How are you settling into your new role?
response to getting a new manager?
that’s something we’ve got to work on.
It’s been really busy since I came in, right from the very start really with the game so quickly against Derry and then I got a little bit of time to work with them before the Athlone game. Then we had the postponement on Monday which wasn’t the ideal end to the day and actually somewhat of a disaster for the league really. It was the ref’s call and we just had to accept it but it was frustrating and incidents like that reflect badly on the league. So now things have settled down a bit and we’ve had some time to work with the players it’s been going well, I’m really enjoying it.
Yes I’ve been happy with most of it, there’s work to do, after the Derry game we knew that. At Athlone I thought we played OK in spells but we gave away a sloppy goal which was disappointing because they’re the games where you have to see them out 1-0.
A lot of them are young and need a bit of time to develop that mentality, to learn that’s how it works, that even if we don’t play as well as we can we still go and win the game, but that will come over a period of time.
You look at Dundalk and Cork and that’s what they did the same night, went and won 1-0 and that’s what we needed to do in Athlone, we needed to see the game out. So we’ve got to learn, that’s what I said to the players after the game that they’ve got to make sure they manage the game, if it’s going against you for a spell that you manage it and don’t concede goals. And
Is there much missing from the squad at the moment?
Have you been happy with the players InTallaghtMaster57.indd 52
We’re happy enough with it, there’s a balance to it in relation to ages, obviously Eamon (Zayed) going before I came in sort of leaves us a bit short up top if we get any injuries. Ciaran Kilduff’s been out with an injury, Dean Kelly is carrying a little bit

54 of a groin problem so in that area we probably are a little short, but it is what it is, there’s nothing we can do about it at the moment we just have to make sure that we look after those players and get them through games. I spoke to all the players when I started the job, it’s a clean slate for everybody, I know some of them from managing them before, in Evan’s case I played with his father! They’ve all trained really well so it’s just a matter of bringing that on to the pitch on a Friday night.
What about the Spanish striker Ortega who was on trial?
we’ve got to learn
I didn’t see him, he was gone by the time I came in so I don’t know too much about him. I spoke with John (Gill) about him and he said he did OK but you need to have a look at him yourself but that move is definitely not going to happen. Obviously we’ve brought Patrick Cregg in which I think will be a good signing till the end of the season and we’ll look forward to next season as well. We know there’s plenty of work to do, we’re in fourth position in the league and that’s for a reason so we need to improve that.
InTallaghtMaster57.indd 54
21/08/2014 02:03
55 With John Gill leaving the club have you hired an assistant yet? Glenn Cronin has come in to work with the team at the moment, I’ve brought him in ‘til the end of the season. He’s a good fella, good around the place, learning the game as well from that point of view, he’s also really good on the pitch with the players. It was a difficult situation for John and in fairness to him when I came in I spoke with him and he said he’d hang on for the Derry game. I said to him to have a think about staying on but he was of the opinion that he should go since Trevor went, that he should go as well. So you have to respect that, he did me a favour by staying for the Derry game so good luck to him in whatever he does.
Will there be any other changes to the backroom staff? Dave Henderson has come in as well, Dave’s been with me everywhere I’ve been, he does a lot of work that people probably don’t see in relation to recruitment at all levels, organisation at all levels and obviously he’s very good on the game as well so he’ll be a big addition to the staff.
Going forward will there be more of an emphasis on signing foreign players? We have to look at everything at the moment, we’ve got to look
InTallaghtMaster57.indd 55
Pat Fenlon at what happens between now and the end of the season and then when the season finishes look at how we are, what we can do financially. It’s easy to say we’d like to go out and bring in some players if we can but there’s a cost to that, there’s the wage cost and there’s the cost of accommodation so it’s something I’ve got to sit down with the board and look at the big picture and decide what way they want to take the club forward. We obviously want to have a pathway for young players coming through, to develop our own players and blend that with really good professionals, I think that is the key. When you are trying to bring through young players the senior players at the club have to be really good, both on and off the park, and the ones we have at the club at the moment are very good. So it’s just trying to strengthen both sides I suppose. We will look outside, there may not be the room to do loads as regards bringing in foreign players, but one or two may be doable. The good thing we have is we’ve loads of great contacts, not just in Scotland but across Europe and beyond. When I was in Scotland I took a player from Honduras, another one from France, so we’ve got plenty of contacts, whether it’s feasible and is affordable to the club is obviously the big issue.
The B team seem to have turned it around since your arrival at the club, nine defeats
in a row before your appointment and now two victories on the bounce?! I don’t know if that’s down to me, could be just a coincidence! I watched them on Sunday against Cobh and they played really well. It’s a learning curve for a lot of them players, it’s a big step from that league into the Premier. It’ll do them no harm getting playing time against senior pros under their belt. It’s something we just have to keep an eye on over the course of the rest of the season. And then that’s something that has to be discussed at the end of this season whether that’s the road we go for next season.
In your opinion, and I know it’s only early days, but are there many players from the B team who you think can go on to become first team regulars in the next few years? To be fair to the lads I haven’t seen loads of them, I’ve seen them twice this year, on Sunday and against Shelbourne earlier on in the season. I’ve spoken to Colin to get a bit of feedback on what he thinks because obviously he’s worked with them all year. I need to go and have a look at them training as well and also get a bit of feedback about their personalities because coming to play for Rovers is difficult. They’re young players who not only have to have the ability but also the personality to be able to deal with it and
handle it. Young Evan [Osam] has shown how to do it, he’s stepped up to the plate, I know he hasn’t played since I’ve come in but that’s probably down to the fact that I’ve wanted a bit more experience on the pitch to try and get as high a finish as we can. He’s got a big future at the club so I think the other lads in that squad can take a lot of heart out of how Evan has done, they’ve seen him step up into the first team, which is good for them as well.
As a Rovers fan yourself you know all about the level of expectation from the fans, how hard is it to manage this? Well it was similar to be honest at Hibs where there is a massive expectation. Hibs is a massive club with a big support who are demanding, and rightly so, because that’s the type of club they are. When you bring 25,000 to a cup final or get 18-20,000 at certain league games it shows how big the club is. As a player and a manager you’ve got to handle that. From our point of view with Rovers we’ve got to handle that as well, but we also have to get across that we are maybe going a little bit of a different road. We want to try and develop our schoolboy section, we want to try and bring players through into the first team and that has a knock on effect with both producing players and maybe selling one or two across the water. That all helps with the bigger picture.

Pat Fenlon It’s just not sustainable to keep bringing in loads of players and having to budget for that every year so we have to make sure that there is a plan going forward that we want to be competitive, we want to try and win as much as possible. I’m here to win things, I’m not here for anything else, but we also have to realize that we have to try and develop our own players for the first team.
facilities are excellent because they are moving players on to England then reinvesting that money back into their set ups. That’s why I’m saying there has to be a two pronged approach to it, we have to make sure our first team squad is strong and also develop our academy.
As regards Shamrock Rovers as a schoolboy club we’ve got to get them established so that we can compete with the likes of Tallaght is a big area, we have Crumlin and Templogue. There got to get the identity in the is a lot of good work being done area, it’s probably gone off here at the moment and that’s a little bit, we need to build important to get that message that again and I think if we’re out. Shane is in there and he’s developing players from the area doing a great job coordinating it that’ll be a big help. We have to all, it’s a lot of work and we need manage the expectations but we to give him as much support as have to also strive to be as good we can. As first team manager I as Shamrock Rovers should be. need to be active in that as well because we have to show that we’re one club, not two different Do you foresee a time clubs. The long term hope is in the future where that there’s a structure there for Rovers train in Tallaght bringing players through.
as opposed to in the AUL as they do at the minute?
We’re open to all that, the club have taken long enough to get here after all the dark days after leaving Milltown and playing in the RDS, Tolka, Morton Stadium and everywhere. They’ve got to Tallaght, got a good stadium, the AUL is a fantastic facility but we’ve got to get some kind of base where people can identify with the club on a daily basis and not just on a Friday. It’s definitely something we’ve got to look at in the long term, get everything back to Tallaght, from the schoolboys to the first team, but how quick that can happen I’m not too sure to be honest. If you look at a lot of the schoolboy teams in Dublin their InTallaghtMaster57.indd 56
Do you have any plans to change the style of play of the team, I know a lot of the fans I speak to hate to see Rovers start a home game with one striker up front? I can understand that a little bit as well and then you have to look at what players you have available and also what suits them. We’ve come in at a late stage of the season where we don’t have a window to change things and bring in other players so we’ve got to utilize and get the best out of the players we have. A system is a system and we’ve got to make sure that we get enough players forward when we’re attacking.
We know we can play with two strikers, it’s just a little difficult to play with two at the moment when we’ve only got three strikers and two of them are carrying knocks. But that’s something we will look at, it’s not set in stone that we’ll play one way.
You’ve said you want to get the fans out of their seats again, is playing attacking football the best way to do that? Yes of course. Look, some of the best teams in the world play with one up front but they’re very, very attack minded so you’ve got to make sure that if you are playing one up front that you’ve got support for him quickly and that you’ve got forward thinking players in that team. Even if you play two up you’ve got to get support to them as well. Tactics from the opposition will dictate as well how we’ll play.
As regards your own history as a Hoops fan, who was your favourite Rovers player when you were a young lad? I started following Rovers in the 70’s, probably at the start of the John Giles era, that’s as far back as it goes, I was at a Cup Final in 78 against Sligo with my Dad and that’s where it comes from, my Dad was a Rovers fan, my uncle Christy is a big Rovers fan, still is, so I suppose it was in the family. We’d go to Crumlin on a Sunday for dinner in my Granny’s then we’d go to Milltown. On the Four In A Row Team, people 21/08/2014 02:03
57 looked at Noel Larkin and Mick Byrne as being great strikers but actually I thought Alan Campbell and Liam Buckley were special together, they were very, very good players. Bucko was probably one of the best headers of a ball I’ve seen, not the biggest fella but fantastic in the air and the movement was excellent as well.
Pat Fenlon It’s incredible because when I was there it was tough times, we were in Tolka and we were training all over the place, one of which was on the side of the road at the Spawell on a Saturday morning! That’s how bad things were at the time.
This is a great location for Rovers, it’s a massive population, and we’ve got to get them into the stadium on a regular basis so that Friday night becomes football night. That is what we’ve got to try and develop.
There were some great players at Rovers in them days. Pat Byrne was a fantastic player when I followed Rovers, he was manager when I came and he sold me which disappointed me but look it, that’s the way football works and you just have to get on with it.
But look, that’s where the club was at the time but fortunately enough the people who were following it were the ones who saved it and redeveloped it. We need people onside here in the area as well to develop the club whether that’s by coming through the turnstiles or getting involved in the club at community level or whatever it is we need.
Finally Pat what are your targets for the rest of the season?
And now you have a chance to write your name into the record books as manager of Rovers how excited does that make you feel?
I think it’s great for the area, it’s been a big lift for Tallaght as well, Rovers have been good for Tallaght and Tallaght’s been good for Rovers so we have to make sure to bring all that together as well as winning football matches.
The target is to finish as high as we can, nothing is impossible until you can’t do it.
We’re in the League Cup final against Dundalk which is going to be a difficult game up there but a great occasion. We’re still in the FAI Cup as well. We’ve got to look at Pat’s and Cork who are both catchable, whether Dundalk are too far ahead remains to be seen but there’s still loads to play for. Normally when you come into a new management job you’re either fighting a relegation battle or looking at mid table mediocrity but I’ve come in here with a final to play, a place in the next round of the FAI Cup and a European place to play for and a possibility of being involved in a league title chase, so there’s loads to play for! The players have to buy into that and you’re hoping that the supporters buy into it as well and come out and get behind the team. I really looking forward to it all.
It would be great, to have my name in the record books. Even managing the club is amazing so to win something with the club is obviously what I want to do, that’s why I’m here. There has to be a big picture here of what we want to do to develop the club in the community, so that when I leave, which is inevitable, that there is something there, whether that is trophies, or a legacy of a community based club, or both.
I’d imagine the club is unrecognisable from the one you left as a player in 1997? InTallaghtMaster57.indd 57

Writers’ Corner FLOATING ANGELHEADS AT THE BOTTOM OF MY GLASS By Sarah Mullan In 5 months what will we know? Will we know more or less? It matters. I see us spread out on paper, Like ink blotches. Forming, and coming together. Thrashing about like Hollywood lovers. It’s a fantasy. It is as if it was produced to seem Like we can never reach desire. And the direction is scattered, unclear. Our dreams understand more, It focuses on exactly what we want.
WHEN HE FALLS IN LOVE By Sarah Mullan
They show me a stage of actors, And you are what I want, we both feel it. I search for you, And there you are.
I could fall in love with her. She’s unique. But not just that. It’s not as simple as that. I know her terrible habits and yet even those habits I could fall in love with!
Sarah is 22 and has been writing for most of her teenage years. She loves writing poetry and stage plays and is a member of an internet-based writing group called Poetry Soup.
Like the way she holds a cigarette between her thumb and finger like she’s pinching a fly. She presses her elbows on the window ledge. I am completely fascinated by how she poses. Wondering if what I’m looking at is real or a fantasy. She lifts the disgusting cigarette to her lips and inhales the fog, releasing it through her nose. She makes me want to smoke it myself, it looks that good near her lips, and pressed between them while she lazily hangs her head out the window flicking the gray snow flakey ash into the Autumn air.
sarahmullansite.wordpress.com
Sometimes she’ll show me how scared she is by hiding her face into my chest beside my heart that stamps like Elaphants whenever she’s near me. She thinks she is the only one that’s scared. But when she’s holding onto me, believing somehow that I’ll actually leave her, I hold on just as tight, I’m not letting her go. When I said I could fall in love with her, I meant that I am falling in love with her.
