Welcome Greetings folks, you’re all very welcome to Edition 60! The main interview this time round is with Love/Hate star and all round sound man Johnny Ward. Since joining the cast as new character Paulie he has made quite the impression, and having interviewed him two years ago we were all so delighted when he landed the role in the much loved RTÉ show. We’re looking forward to seeing how his character fares in the rest of the series and we’ve no doubt Johnny will put in even more excellent performances in his career in the future. The secondary interview is with another sound local head, Daniel Paxton from the band Buffalo Sunn. Since the band changed their name last year they have been enjoying a resurgence and their just released debut album By The Ocean, By The Sea is an outstanding record. And no, I’m not just saying that because we interviewed their lead singer, the album really is that good! As always we have all the latest local news, and reviews you’ve come to expect from InTallaght Magazine. Let me end by saying thank you all for reading and please, please feel free to get in touch with us if there is anything you want us to cover.

Johnny Ward

through” so it happened just like that, so quick!

INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon

What was it about the character Paulie that you found interesting?

Johnny Ward is a 27 year old actor from Greenhills currently playing a major role in RTE smash hit show Love/Hate. Acting since he was a child, Johnny has built up a very impressive resume during his career. Earlier this year he played the part of Vinnie Corcoran in the comedy series The Centre. Prior to this he appeared opposite Sean Penn in 2011 movie This Must Be the Place, had the lead role in Kirsten Sheridan’s movie Doll House and had a stint in Fair City back in 2005. As well as this he also finds the time to help run a very successful drama school. We first spoke with Johnny two years ago so it was brilliant to get to catch up with him and hear about the exciting developments in his career since then.

do a film called Dollhouse so I had to pull out, nobody knew at the time what a massive success Love/Hate was going to be as at that time it was just a pilot and maybe four episodes or something and then it just exploded and I thought, ‘Oh I’d love to be a part of that.’

Tell us how you got the part in the latest series of Love/Hate?

I had watched a bit of season one and two but I became a real fan of it during the explosive third and fourth seasons. This time ‘round I had just finished filming a comedy series called The Centre on RTÉ and afterwards I had just gone around to my girlfriend Rachel’s house for a little break and I got a text off my agent saying I’d got an audition for Love/Hate.

To be cast as an actor in Love/ Hate and walk on to the most watched thing on Irish TV is extremely exciting but also so daunting and intimidating. I had an audition for the first series but I was just about to

I thought great, here’s an audition I’ve been waiting on for so long. So many of my friends had been in it and I knew most of the main cast from auditions and different parts. I looked at the script and the synopsis of

the character Paulie and I just fell in love with the character straight away. I understood that it was a huge role so I was going to have to do three or four auditions. After the fifth audition I didn’t hear anything back for five or six days and then my agent rang me and said I had another audition and I thought “Am I still in for that?!”, as I hadn’t heard anything in ages. Following the fifth interview I didn’t hear anything back for about ten days and I thought I didn’t have it, I was devastated. Rachel as a surprise, said look we’re not doing anything for the next month so I’ll bring you to Disneyworld. Literally the morning after we’d booked Florida my agent Maureen rang and said “You have the part of Paulie, I’m going to email you the scripts now and you go in tomorrow and you meet the Love/Hate cast for a read

Well there’s absolutely no cr*p whatsoever from the guy. It’s not that he’s intimidating, because he himself isn’t, it’s his uncle Terence who’s intimidating, so he’s developed that and he’s so used to being Terence Big Balls’ nephew. You just don’t mess with him; he is used to nothing but respect. I think he probably enjoys annoying Nidge, that’s the way I see him anyway. I love playing him because it completely differs from everything I’ve done before.

What went through your mind at that moment when you heard you got the part? I was like “I don’t want to do it; I don’t want to do it!” Obviously I did want to do it but it was just the short notice caused that feeling. I had no idea where this character was going, I was emailed three scripts, I got them and just started panicking thinking how am I going to learn this. So I went into this hotel in Dundrum at 10 o’clock the next morning and there was litterly the whole cast, and I was late as well, the taxi I ordered was late, which made things worse! The new boy in school who was late! It was intimidating but really exciting and I was wrong to be intimidated because they’re all lovely, the nicest bunch of people you could meet. Stuart Carolan the writer made me

it’s not that he’s intimidating, because he himself isn’t, it’s his uncle terence who’s intimidating

the fact i knew charlie murphy, who plays siobhan, was a huge help, especially with all the scenes we were going to have to do

17

Johnny Ward feel so welcome and he gave me a lovely introduction which I really appreciated. The fact I knew Charlie Murphy, who plays Siobhan, was a huge help, especially with all the scenes we were going to have to do, not knowing her would have probably made it a bit awkward. I know her boyfriend Ciaran O’Brien, who’s also from Tallaght as well, actually the first film I ever did was with him, so I knew Charlie from going out with him. She’s always been a lovely girl and someone I always wanted to work with and the two of us just hit it off straight away. After we shot our first scenes she sent me a lovely message saying ‘congratulations you done great’ and that she was looking forward to working with me again. It made me feel real at home.

How did you enjoy shooting your first scenes? We started filming on the 18th of March, but to be honest with you I didn’t sleep much the night before because I was going into a show that was watched by so many people and I was scared. What if I messed up and I ruined Love/Hate, this show that’s so loved! The first week was nerve wracking; I didn’t say much and just kept myself to myself, which isn’t like me. I didn’t enjoy that week because I was out of my comfort zone but once I got over that I loved it. We had such a laugh on set, I met so many interesting people, not just the actors. The crew are all lovely people as well.

Do you check what Love/Hate fans are saying about you on social media? Absolutely, I think it’s impossible not to. Like with the Love/Hate Facebook page when they put up a picture of you and people have the chance to write whatever they want, in the back of your mind you’re kind of thinking “I wonder what they’re saying?”

It’s been brilliant; he is such an amazing actor. I went to see him in Howie The Rookie, a one man play, and he was unreal and he won the Irish Times award for it as well.

What do you think it is that makes Love/Hate so popular?

The writing. I think the acting is phenomenal but overall I think it’s the writing. I never thought it But the response has been about was before I acted in it. I always 70% positive, 30% negative but I thought the show was about one don’t mind, everyone is entitled person, Tom Vaughan Lawlor. to their opinion. A lot of it is “I You could see obviously there hate that chap because of what he’s doing to Siobhan” and stuff were all these other actors in like that. But the majority of the it, like Aiden Gillen and Robert Sheehan, but I think the country comments have been positive. just fell in love with Nidge. I I’ve had no negative comments think Stuart [Carolan] fell in love on the street, people have been with him as well and he went very complimentary. A lot of kids from a side character to the coming up to me saying, ‘Alright Paulie, get in a photo there will ya’. main man. That’s what I used to think but you only realise when you sit down with this group of What has it been like people and you’re just reading watching some of your the script as a member of the on screen love scenes cast and you have shivers down with your girlfriend?! your spine, which I have never got from any script I’ve read Ah it’s funny; the two of us with before. our hands on our heads, and Rachel is very posh so she’s just It’s so interesting to see how “Oh My God!” She’s great like they choose the location for that, she understands, she’s a scene. Another thing which doing a show at the moment I think is very important is Celtic Diva, and she has to do all the music, which is absolutely this sexy dancing with all these phenomenal. The whole scene guys, so it’s just the nature of the with Nidge and Fran and The business. When Sunday comes Velvet Underground song I just wake up so excited, I can’t “I’m sticking with you…” it’s wait to see Love/Hate because I haunting, you’d never think haven’t seen it since we filmed you’d hear that song with such it and I am a massive fan of the a creepy edge to it. I don’t think show as well. there’s been an Irish show, as far as I know, that’s used music that How have you enjoyed way, I think it’s a real American acting opposite Tom vibe and I think it really works in Vaughan Lawlor? Love/Hate.

18

Johnny Ward Do you ever see yourself moving abroad for your career? I’m happy in Dublin. I love doing what I do here. If I’m not working professionally I’m involved in the industry I want to work in and I can pass it on to kids. If an audition for a Hollywood role comes along I’ll do it but I’m not going to risk what I have at the moment to live in London. I couldn’t live anywhere else, I love Dublin too much

You worked alongside Jack Reynor in Dollhouse it must be fascinating for you to see him make his mark in Hollywood? Absolutely, he has just exploded onto another level now with the success of The Transformers movie. Do you know what, he deserves every bit of success because he’s the nicest chap you could meet. He’s always had this larger than life personality, he’s an amazing actor. He still keeps in contact. There’s a very important saying that I’ve always been taught by my parents which is “Be careful who you meet on the way up because you’re going to meet them on the way back down” and I think

that’s really important, especially in this country. And Jack, even with all the fame he now has, I got a phone call from his mother and she said that Jack would really appreciate if you and a guest would come see him at The Transformers premiere, which I thought was a lovely gesture. It’s little things like that which shows his wonderful character.

Are you still involved in teaching drama as well? Yes I am. Myself and my sister Maureen run a performing arts school, Talented Kids in Kilcullen and Naas. She’s my agent as well. I love it, when a part comes up I can go and do that and if it doesn’t it’s just amazing to be working in the same industry. So I’m involved all the time and I can pass on the knowledge I’ve learned from working with professionals to the kids. I must say we’ve been really successful and we’ve always been lucky as well, even with the recession and all, parents are always going to put their children first no matter what. We’re also in Clondalkin and I must say this year, of all years, it’s funny because even on the break in the latest Love/Hate in two of

the adverts some of the kids are from our school. I love being as versatile as possible whether it’s doing panto on stage or a musical or playing a gangster in a TV series.

Finally Johnny what is on the horizon for you career wise for the rest of the year? Well I start filming a new movie Mammal next week. It’s an Irish movie directed by Rebecca Daly and starring Rachel Griffith and with former Love/Hate actor Barry Keoghan in the lead. Barry played Wayne, the guy who shot the cat in the last series. We’re going to be filming in Luxembourg and Dublin. The film is about a woman who takes in a homeless child after her own son goes missing. I’m really looking forward to working with everyone. Then I’ll be playing Peter Pan in the Gaiety Panto at Christmas which is something I always love doing. This year it’s going to be extra special because Rachel is doing it as well so we’ll be getting to spend more time together. Panto can be frowned upon by other actors but I love doing it so I can’t wait.

Buffalo Sunn

INTERVIEW By Padraig Conlon

Buffalo Sunn are a six We met up with songwriter piece band consisting and singer Daniel on the eve of the Paxton brothers of the band’s departure for a from Greenhills; series of shows in America. Daniel the songwriter, guitarist and lead vocalist, Neil on keys, Congratulations for “By guitar and backing The Ocean, By The Sea” vocals, Conor on keys it’s a wonderful record? and guitar and Ruairi on bass along with Thanks very much, we’re Donagh O’Brien on delighted with the response, drums and Patrick for me it was just a matter of McHugh on guitar. getting it out. Looking back at it Until October 2013 they went by the name Sweet Jane and released the critically acclaimed album Sugar For My Soul along with a string of EPs. This month they released their debut album as Buffalo Sunn. Titled By The Ocean, By The Sea, and produced by Pat McCarthy (The Waterboys, REM, Spiritualized, U2), the album incorporates sounds from the 60’s right up to the present day mixing big reverbladen harmonies with carefully placed guitars to take the listener on an epic journey through their songs.

Yes we kind of moved around when we were making it. We went down there and we were doing four day stints down there which was cool. It’s was a strange aul’ place, amazing grounds and all but when it came to the equipment it wasn’t so great.

Being the main songwriter with the band who do you go about creating music and where do you get your inspiration?

It’s a weird one, it’s kind of hard to ever put it on one thing. Sometimes I could be watching a film or reading a book or a Our friend Liam Mulvanney, a melody just pops into my head very talented engineer who we and it gets stored somewhere did most of our demos with, he has a place near Stephen’s Green at the back of my mind and it’ll now it feels kind of old to us in a called Bow Lane so after Grouse eventually come to the front. way. It’s great to have it released Lodge we moved to Bow Lane and then go play it to people. It’s never really a set thing. and stayed there. Starting out on the process it’ll It’s great that people like it, that’s always be me and an acoustic You recorded it with the goal, to write something guitar at the start and I’ll have legend producer and that you think is good and that a little melody and I’ll try and fellow Tallaght man you believe in. I think if you play the chords and then I’ll Pat McCarthy? write something just to please come up with a way of singing people you lose sight of what and a harmony. Yes that right, he’s actually it’s all about, it can seem very from around the corner from contrived. I think when it comes to our us so we have that connection sound, the music that would anyway. He went to the comp, I inspire us is a lot of bands using You recorded most went to Macdaras so there was harmonies, I’m a sucker for good of the album in Grouse plenty of stories knocking about harmonies. I suppose we take Lodge, what was you know! He’s a cool guy and that on and I put it into songs. that like? amazing to work with.

21 How does it work having four brothers in the band, do you all get on well? Yeah we do, it’s surprising how well we all get on. I think it’s because of the amount of bands we’ve been in before plus we’re all into the same kind of music, we can all agree on good music. Ruari is the oldest and he’s like a music encyclopaedia! He’s just obsessed with buying music. I live with him in town and the records are just f**kin’ everywhere! So through him we all learned and carved out a little corner we thought was cool. I think for the other two lads in the band it might be strange sometimes like when the four of us have a blazing argument for two minutes solid then we’ll all be breaking our sh*t laughing!

You’re going to have to get your parents to adopt them?! I think they’re kind of getting used to it now!

Did growing up in Tallaght inform your music in any way? I think we were all kind of dreamers and we’d be more focused on the Grand Canyon than somewhere down the road! I suppose you are a product of where you come from. I think it’s easier when you’re older to look back to when you were young and maybe write about it then. You probably spend a lot of your

time writing about things that are further afield.

What is the story about the name change from Sweet Jane to Buffalo Sunn? Basically Sweet Jane started off as a side project with myself, my brother Ruari and our drummer Donagh along with a female singer, Lydia, and basically it was a rockier kind of sound. It was all done fairly lo fi and everybody was surprised how well it done, for a side project. I wrote the songs for Lydia to sing, I never wrote them for myself to sing as I don’t really have a rock kind of voice. When Lydia couldn’t commit to the band it all fell apart and became such a nightmare. So we were like “F*ck! What are we going to do?” We had all these songs so we persevered and I tracked everything myself so we went on and tackled the album that way. We had to do this stripped down gig in Cork so I got in my other brother Neil so there were the four of us doing this stripped back thing with me doing the singing. Then it just became a completely different thing altogether so we just thought “why don’t we do it this way?” Then we got in Patrick the youngest brother and we became Buffalo Sunn, around this time last year.

that’s the goal, to write something that you think is good and that you believe in. i think if you write something just to please people you lose sight of what it’s all about What’s the meaning behind the name Buffalo Sunn?

to something I think is good and I’m always listening for new stuff.

The main meaning for me is I got really big into reading about Native American culture while I was making the album. I was reading this amazing book called The Empire of The Sun and Moon it was describing how the buffalo were called bison and the buffalo was another type of animal so I decided to use that then the Sunn part came from the name of these old amplifiers from the 70’s.

You’ve described Buffalo Sunn’s sound as “Cosmic rock” could you elaborate on this for me?

We wanted something that stood out and was easy to say. Another band I had been in was called The Brothers Movement and that was a f*cking nightmare to say!

What bands inspire you? Growing up it would have been Neil Young, Crosby Stills and Nash, The Stone Roses, Ride. There’s so many really, it’s hard to narrow it down. More recently it’s been My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, influences keep evolving. I’ll always turn my ear

Yeah the “cosmic” word seems to have stuck! I’m a big fan of Gram Parsons, I think that country type rock is amazing, and he hated that description so he called it cosmic American music and I thought “that cosmic thing will do” and I robbed it from him!

Finally Daniel what have you guys got planned for the rest of the year? Well we’re just about to head to America to play some showcases then when we come back from that we’ve got a couple of dates organised around Ireland then hopefully start doing demos for our next album before Christmas, which I’m really looking forward to. Can’t wait for 2015!

LOVE, ROSIE By Carla McEllone

THE JUDGE By Rachel Lynch

The Judge is a film that focuses around the turbulent relationship of a father and his son. Robert Downy Jr. and Robert Duvall take on the lead roles as Henry “Hank” Palmer and his father Judge Joseph Palmer. Hank, a successful lawyer, returns to his hometown of Carlinville, Indiana, for his mother’s funeral. As he heads back to the family home he is greeted by many memories of a life he has all but forgotten, both good and bad. The relationship he has with his father is nonexistent and

after spending the day in his company he is ready to set off back home. that is until he receives a phone call from a member of the police and also a family friend to inform him that his estranged father is a suspect in a hit and run which resulted in a death. Hank now must set aside all the hurt and anger he has towards his father and defend him in court against Dwight Dickham, a prosecutor determined to see Joseph put away. Can Hank save his father from prison? Can Judge Joseph repair their damaged relationship?

Love, Rosie is a romantic comedy based on Cecelia Ahern’s 2004 best selling novel Where Rainbows End, starring Lily Collins and Sam Claflin. The film tells the story of best friends Alex and Rosie and how they continuously come ever so close to falling over that line of friendship and love. Alex and Rosie have been best friends since they were five years old and have been there for each other through everything. It is clear to everybody but themselves that they are perfect for each other. As the movie unfolds more and more obstacles arise which prevent Rosie and her best friend from getting together.

Rosie and Alex have dreams to leave Britain and experience life in America. Alex receives a scholarship from Harvard University, while Rosie’s plans are cut short when she discovers she is pregnant after a short fling with a boy called Greg who is nowhere near interested. However, despite the unwanted pregnancies, the distance, the various relationships, marriage and divorce, Rosie and Alex’s connection still stays the same. The question we all have is will the soul mates realise how perfect they are for each other or will it be too late?

SERENA By Rachel Lynch

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper share a passionate kiss in the new trailer for their long-awaited movie Serena. The film was shot back in 2012 and the pair play lovestruck newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton in the depression-era flick. The film, directed by Susanne Bier, has been so long in the making that many have forgotten its existence. The star characters are seen meeting, falling in love and pursuing their dreams together, before a series of dramatic events alter the tone of their romance. Their empire crumbles, the couple’s relationship appears to become strained and

illegitimate children enter the narrative. The story begins with Serena proving herself to be equal to any man by overseeing loggers, hunting rattle-snakes and even saving someone’s life in the wilderness. Serena and George have power and influence in the palm of their hands, but things start to unravel when she discovers his hidden past and struggles with her own inability to conceive. The film is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Ron Rash, which was first published in 2008. Serena boasts a strong supporting cast including Sam Reid, Rhys Ifans, Toby Jones and Sean Harris.

Have Your Own Horrorthon By Rachel Lynch

So it’s that time of the year again, whether you like it or not horror is everywhere. We have a list of some old greats along with releases in the cinema right now, Netflix and TV listings for this Halloween.

THE EXORCIST

OK so it’s one most of us have already seen but it is one of the all time classics and was created in 1973. When a 12-year old girl is possessed by demons, a young priest takes it upon himself to selflessly save her at the behest of her famous movie-star mother.

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT

PSYCHO

The greatest horror flick of them all. Secretary Marion Crane, has just stolen $40,000 from her employer in order to run away with her boyfriend. While driving she is overcome by exhaustion during a heavy rainstorm. Down a dark back road she spots a light on at the Bates Motel. There she meets the polite hotel owner Norman Bates, a young man with an interest in taxidermy and a difficult relationship with his mother. What’s great about Psycho is it isn’t your typical horror.

Originally marketed as a real ‘found footage’ film, it was a big hit when it first came out but even knowing that the whole plot was staged, it’s still an iconic moie. The story follows three student filmmakers who march into the woods to make a documentary about a fabled witch credited with a string of murders dating back 200 years.

THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT 2 Rebooting the horrific mood of its predecessor, this sequel unleashes a tide of evil spirits on a happy family moving into their Georgia dream house.

Chad Michael Murray and Abigail Breslin star. Whenever anyone finds their dream house in a movie, rest assured things will turn evil. Available on Netflix.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4

Usually I wouldn’t be a fan of a franchise that continues on again and again with the same theme running throughout, but The Paranormal Activity films will keep you on the edge of your seat.

ANNABELLE

If you would rather hit the cinema this Halloween you have a few options to choose from. My first choice would be Annabelle. We first met Annabelle in The Conjuring now we uncover the origin of the pigtailed doll before the evil was released in the supernatural thriller of the

32

same name. The film sucks you into a false sense of security telling the story of a couple excited with the arrival of their new baby, when it all goes horribly wrong when Annabelle is introduced into their lives.

The story picks up five years after the bloody events of Paranormal Activity 3, its chilling successor, and relates a new wave of mysterious suburban horrors. One piece of advice don’t watch this film while at home alone. Watch it on Netflix.

HORROR ON TV ALIEN: THE DIRECTORS CUT

30TH OCTOBER SKY SF/HORROR : 10.45

Here we have another classic. Filmed back in 1979 this ultimate horror is definitely one not to miss this Halloween. The plot is simple enough to follow but one that will have you unaware of when exactly to cover your eyes. A ship sent to investigate an SOS distress call encounters an alien that begins to kill the crew members one by one.

FINAL DESTINATION

30TH OCTOBER FILM FOUR : 11.05

This is the beginning of another horror franchise. Final Destination released in 2009 is the first of many that follow the lives of a group of people who have cheated death once and find that death now has set out for revenge causing terror to those who have been fortunate to survive a catastrophe.

34

Music and uplifting - almost as if denying the seriousness of the theme. Stellar The Mood Is Slow is haunting, vocal hooks galore and it contains my favorite lyric on the album; ‘despite my behaviour, truth is you’re my saviour, can you save me one more time’. With acoustic singer-songwriter panache in abundance, it’s one of the most intimate, credible and personal songs.

RAY SCULLY Let’s Blow This Town Tonight By Linn Heldal

Everyone at the InTallaght Headquarters has been eager to hear Tallaght’s very own Ray Scully’s debut album, and now I’m lucky enough to have gotten my hands on it. Many may know Ray from the Voice of Ireland, where he was recognised for his stunning versions of Massive Attack’s Teardrops and James Brown’s classic It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World. He has now delivered a superb and highly eclectic debut album. These nine tracks ache and yearn, while they take the listener on a journey of tales about love, sorrow, fear, darkness and hope. Whiskey is certainly mentioned more than once, so I would call the album a whiskey-marinated mix of acoustic folk, blues and rocking slide guitars. Ray’s self-assured soulfulness comes to fore on the first track I Found a Dollar Bill. It contains hard luck tales about drugs and being captured alone in your own world. Although the serious topic, it’s contagious

The same goes for Little Rooster, which portrays the frustrations of being restricted by your own environs or personal limitations, with a piano accompaniment and orchestral strings. The moment the hook of the title track Let’s Blow This Town Tonight kicked off I understood why this one is set to be the first single release. It’s pulsating with great dynamics and by the end it has you dancing and singing along. The Haze/Ain’t no Grave is the hardest rocking track of the album. The two songs are put together to show how we sometimes can jump between feelings on different ends of the spectrum - all the way from the feelings of vulnerability in The Haze, to the invulnerability in the old traditional American tune Ain’t No Grave. Up until now the American-vibes have been dominating, so the Irish anthem Coming Home is very welcome and it arrives at just the right time. Although the album is officially out on November 14the, the single launch for Let’s Blow This Town Tonight is on Halloween night, so get your fancy dress on and get down to the Sin É to let Ray haunt and spellbound you with his songs. When all is said and done, despite the darkness, this album is about overcoming obstacles, remembering what’s important and having the strength to leave the negative behind.

ROCSTRONG Limits By Linn Heldal

Andre J.P Bangala, aka Rocstrong, has now released his second single, following in the footsteps of his debut, the funk rock track Go’Head, which made plenty of people open their eyes to the young Dubliner earlier this year. He seems to be in the middle of finding his own musical expression, and with Limits he is going down a different path than with his first single. It’s a toe-tapping, hip-shaking tune, and the African inspired vibrations gives a clear nod to Bangala’s Congolese roots. With its bass focus and trumpet-like sounds, Limits may be an interesting breath of fresh air. It’s suprising and facinating, although it lacks depth. But that’s neither the aim of the song, or Bangala’s intentions; like he has said himself: ‘I don’t plan to cure hunger or heal the world with my music. I just want some guy who is on his way to work in his car to feel better once he’s heard my song.’ At the moment the instruments are fairly synthetic and the sound too unpolished, but with the support of the right people, and if he keeps up and improves the catchy hooks and songwriting, we might be seeing a lot more to this Tallaght native in the future.

Tech APPLE WATCH By Colm O’Muirí

Apple as a company doesn’t like the term “smartwatch” and will not refer to the Apple Watch as such. They didn’t call the iPhone a smartphone, and as far as they are concerned, it is a “watch” produced by Apple – hence the name. The Apple Watch will be released in three different collections in 2015 and they are Watch, Watch Sport and Watch edition, however with a range of designs, bands and faces for each watch, you can design the watch to suit your own style and preferences. There are also two different screen sizes, 38mm and 42 mm for you to choose from. The Watch is a stainless steel or black stainless steel case with sapphire crystal and a range of bands. Watch Sport is an anodized aluminium case in silver or space grey with strengthened Ion-X glass with a range of colourful durable bands. Finally we have the Watch Edition which is an 18 karat

gold case in yellow or rose with sapphire crystal with exquisitely crafted bands and closures, according to Apple.

that’s roughly €276. That’s a lot for a watch which by all accounts will be the most basic of the range of watches.

These Apple watches will be compatible with the iPhone 5 and all later models which run iOS 8 technology. Apple has made it clear that the Apple Watch will ship in “early 2015.” The reason that they aren’t specific with when, is simple: they aren’t done with it yet. The hardware elements of the Apple Watch seem to be complete, but Apple appears to still be tweaking the software for optimal performance. I also believe that Apple has yet to decide final prices for the various versions of their watch.

The Apple Watch will have a range of features from receiving phone calls, or allowing you to transfer longer calls to your iPhone as well as iMessage and also text messages.

That being said, the introductory price for an Apple Watch has been released and that is $349,

A feature which I like is, if you don’t want to accept a phone call all you have to do is cover the face of the watch with your hand and it will silence the call. For those of you with an Apple TV, an Apple watch will also be able to control the TV, i.e. act as a remote control.

The Watch and the Watch Edition are two lovely looking watches, regardless of them being a smartwatch or not, however I cannot say the same for the Watch Sport. The Watch and Watch Edition look stunning from what I have seen and would not look out of place on anyone’s arm, whereas the Watch Sport looks a little bit like a child’s watch. Undoubtedly when the watches are released in Ireland, and worldwide like with all Apple products they will be a success, and with the release of the Apple watches coming early next year, you won’t have that long to wait to find out.

Game

WWE 2K15 By Colm O’Muirí

WWE 2K15 follows on from last year’s instalment of the franchise and this is the fourth instalment of the franchise which 2K have done.

ASSASSIN’S CREED UNITY

Assassins Creed Unity’s main feature is the epic single player campaign, which is a given with the Assassins Creed franchise, however in Unity there is also the chance to have a co-op experience as well.

Assassins Creed Unity is the latest installment in the historical action adventure video game from Ubisoft.

The co-op allows up to four players, you and three others to explore 18th century Paris in all its open world glory. Some of the missions you will be tasked with in co-op are: sabotage and execution, protect an emperor, and to assassinate a Templar agent.

By Colm O’Muirí

Unity is the seventh installment in the Assassins Creed franchise, following the release of Black Flag in 2013. Assassins Creed Unity is set during the French Revolution and the gameplay takes place in Paris during that time. The main character in the game is Arno Dorian, and his story begins on the eve of the French Revolution in Paris. However there is a modern day setting also, with the modern day Assassins trying to explore Arno’s past so it will help them in the present day.

Assassins Creed Unity features new weapons in the game, one of which is the Phantom Blade, this is a concealed blade that features crossbow capabilities, which should allow you to take down your prey with greater ease. It also features a reinvented fighting system, full motion control of the parkour mechanics and brand new stealth gameplay. Fans of the franchise from its PS3 and Xbox 360 days may be disappointed to hear that Unity is a next gen exclusive for the consoles, although a Windows version is also set for release.

The major addition to this year’s roster of playable superstars, at this moment he is only available when you pre-order, is the icon Sting. Sting signed with the WWE in 2014, however he has never actually wrestled in the WWE/F. All of the match types you have come to expect in a WWE game make a return this year, however some of them have been updated. The steel cage match will

39 now have a new escape system and in the Hell in a Cell match players will be able to use more weapons, including the Dudley Boys favourite, tables. You will also be able to have an 8 man Money in the Bank Ladder Match for the first time ever in this installment.

Motor LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR By Rachel Lynch

Even if you are not up to date with the top models on the road of 2014 you will have certainly heard of the Aventador, but have you heard of the roadster version? Its style, unlike last month’s Jaguar, won’t appeal to everyone but one thing is for certain, if you can afford the fuel alone in this new 2014 model well then the asking price won’t break the bank. The new Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster is a completely open vehicle with sleek lines combining perfectly balanced sportiness and elegance. The design is the result of a careful study into the best way of combining performance, elegant style, ease of use and a driving experience that will supposedly amaze you. The engine hood of the Roadster differs from the hood of the coupe because of its central “spinal column” with two pairs of hexagonal windows connected at

the sides as if it were hyper tech armour plates. Their purpose is to cool the engine, drain off rain water properly and of course allow the beauty of the V12 power unit to be admired. So let’s talk about the drive. As you can imagine the Aventador Roadster boasts record performance. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3 seconds flat and has a maximum speed of some 350 km/h These numbers make the new Aventador Roadster a unique super sports car with no direct competition. How about the interior? Well it’s all received a completely new look. The use of leather called Sabbia Nefertem highlights the superb hand made craftsmanship of the upholstery

from Sant’ Agata Bolognese. OK so what you all want to know is how do you purchase one of these? As I said it is one of the most expensive cars we have ever reviewed and although extremely difficult to pin down a price for the Aventador Roadster in Ireland, going by UK and American prices you are looking at an unbelievable €350,000.00. I viewed a number of add-on packages available online for this model and if money really wasn’t an issue well then you could really have a lot of fun with this car. The image is not one that will suit all car lovers but it is certainly one to turn heads for all the right or wrong reasons.

Book RACHEL JOYCE

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

By Gwen Taylour

When Harold Fry nips out one morning to post a letter, leaving his wife hoovering upstairs, he has no idea that he is about to walk from one end of the country to the other. Harold Fry is convinced that he must deliver a letter to an old friend in order to save her, meeting various characters along the way and reminiscing about the events of his past and people he has known, as he tries to find peace and acceptance. Recently retired, sweet, emotionally numb Harold Fry is jolted out of his passivity by a letter from Queenie Hennessy, an old friend, who he hasn’t heard from in twenty years. She has written to say she is in hospice and wanted to say goodbye. Leaving his tense, bitter wife Maureen to her chores, Harold intends a quick walk to the corner mailbox to post his reply but instead, inspired by a chance encounter, he becomes convinced he must deliver his message in person to Queenie--who is 600 miles away-because as long

as he keeps walking, Harold believes that Queenie will not die. So without hiking boots, rain gear, map or mobile phone, one of the most endearing characters in current fiction begins his unlikely pilgrimage across the English countryside. Along the way, strangers stir up memories--flashbacks, often painful, from when his marriage was filled with promise and then not, of his inadequacy as a father, and of his shortcomings as a husband. Ironically, his wife Maureen, shocked by her husband’s sudden absence, begins to long for his presence. Is it possible for Harold and Maureen to bridge the distance between them? And will Queenie be alive to see Harold arrive at her door? Harold is very gentle soul and I began to feel protective of him on his big adventure, which gave way to pride as he found his stride. This is a bit of a strange tale and yet you can imagine it actually happening. One of the most important lessons that Harold learns along the way is that each new person he meets, no matter how unextraordianary at first glance, has their own unique situation and outlook on life, and this revelation helps Harold to come to terms with some of his demons and also find a better to way to be in the world. This book gently unfolds into a powerful parable and I really enjoyed the experience!

your nearest drop-off point, visit www.teamhope.ie.

This year’s Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal is aiming to deliver over 200,000 shoeboxes full of goodies to needy children from Africa and Eastern Europe. The shoeboxes will be packed individually by Irish families, schools, communities and businesses to help turn what will otherwise be just another day into something special for these children.

Suggestions for what can be put in the shoeboxes include pens, pencils, colouring books, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, a small item of clothing and a treat. The wonderful thing about the Shoebox Appeal is that it’s personal from one child to another or from one family to another. For children whose families typically live on less than €1 per day, the giftfilled shoebox from Ireland may be the only present they will receive this Christmas.

School children, communities and businesses in County Dublin are being asked to wrap a shoebox with Christmas paper, fill it with gifts for a child, attach €4 and bring it to any of the drop off points across the county before November 10th. To find

FEATURE By Rachel Lynch

It’s been a while since I have been back in the gym. A few months back we covered my workout sessions at the Green Isle Leisure Centre with my trainer Nikki Solyom.

These 12 sessions are a great way to lose weight fast but also in the correct way. You don’t need t starve yourself or give us all the treats you just need to be more observant on portion size and the amount of meals you have a day.

A few months back we covered my workout sessions at the Green Isle Leisure Centre with my trainer Nikki Solyom. Since then I have continued to walk each day and watch what I eat, but I’m looking forward to getting back to the intense training. I will be participating in 12 one hour Personal Training sessions over the next couple of weeks. Each session will focus on a number of different things. I will also be splitting some of the hour sessions into half hour quick sessions which are fantastic for fitting in around work. Last year I lost a total of three stone from eating healthy and exercising regularly. It’s very tough trying to keep fit without a proper program laid out for you and of course the personal trainer to guide you. With the help of Nikki I hope to tone up and work on the correct foods to eat over the festive period. I found the last time it was important to start the training and focus on goals before Christmas as that way you have your program set in place before you go too wild over the New Year.

The fitness program Nikki has set up for me will be applicable for anyone hoping to lose weight or simply tone up. Each week she will focus on different parts of the body and also all the machines in the gym and more importantly the correct ways to use them. The last time I took part in the 12 week program I dropped almost two dress sizes and gained valuable fitness techniques some of which can be altered and practised in your own home which is great for the times you can’t make it to the gym. So keep your eyes on my progress over the next few weeks!

Sport Boden And Judes Make Their Champo Bow!

Tallaght Local Trainer At The Golden Cobra Boxing Club Paddy Hyland With His Boxer Paul Smith

The IABA’s Dublin County Board’s October Festival of Boxing 2014 in National Stadium throughout October 2014. The October Festival 2014 for the first time incorporates the Dublin Male and Female Novice Boxing Championships. Each gold medal winner, in each novice weight category, both male or female, shall therefore be the Dublin Novice Champion at that weight category for the IABA 2014/2015 season The Festival of Boxing was initially and primarily designed for adult novices. However, it became apparent during 2013’s inaugural and highly successful October Festival that some very skilled and experienced boxers were entering that October Festival’s Tournaments. Therefore in the interest of fairness and to keep experienced boxers away from the novice boxers, a set of male and female Masters Tournaments were announced where experienced boxers could compete fairly and safely against each other.

Paddy Murray With His Coaching Team In His Corner, From St Josephs Abc Ballyboden

It was the end of the line for the last two Southside representatives in the Dublin Senior Football Championship as St Judes and Ballyboden St Endas both bowed out at the Semi Final stage against north side opposition St Oliver Plunkett ER and All Ireland Champions St Vincent’s. Plunketts played a particularly ugly style of football putting 14 men behind the ball and hissting the Judes men on the break, it was very effective as Judes only scored 0-04 to their 1-11. Ballyboden were undone by the sheer brilliance of one man Diurmaid Connolly who had an amazing game scoring 1-5, it was a particularly bitter bill for the Boden boys to swallow as they had been knocked out of the hurling at the same stage a week previously.

Whoops He’s Dunne It Again... Tallaght man Richard Dunne has reached another Premier League milestone, but maybe this is one he will like to forget... His own goal against Liverpool has taken his tally to 10 own goals in the Premier League, making him the first player to reach double figures. Ironically Richard has only scored 11 real goals giving him a goal difference of +1 Dunne scored six during his time at Manchester City, three at Aston Villa and took just three top-flight games with QPR to add to his tally. Richard is way out in front with Jamie Carragher and Zak Knight both on 7 but with neither of them currently playing in the PL he won’t be caught anytime soon!

Peachy Keane Another Tallaght man breaking records is Robbie Keane and this time its a record he will be happy about. Robbie’s hat-trick against Gibraltar in the recent European qualifiers means he now tops the all time scorers list in Qualifiers. Robbie has now scored 21 goals in 38 qualifiers and only Europeans to have netted more International goals than the Glenshane man are Ferenc Puskás, Sándor Kocsis, Gerd Müller and Miroslav Klose. Not bad company for a lad to be in...Well done Robbie!

53 Mary Kennedy Steps Out With Transplant Children For Family Fun Run Broadcaster Mary Kennedy stepped out with two young transplant boys for a photocall to encourage the public to take part in the Irish Kidney Association’s ‘Run for a Life’ family fun run and raise awareness about the importance of organ donation. Members of the public, young and old, demonstrated their support of organ donation and the ongoing work of the Irish Kidney Association by taking part in the charity fundraiser at Corkagh Park, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 on Saturday, 18th October (www.runforalife.ie) Mary Kennedy, ambassador for organ donation 2014, said, “as someone who enjoys jogging as a way of keeping fit, I believe that Run for a Life is a fantastic, fun and healthy way for the public to show their support for a very worthy cause. Being a native of Clondalkin, I have enjoyed running in Corkagh Park from a young age. I have known people who have been touched by organ donation. I think most people have known somebody who has suffered organ failure and how it has impacted on them and their loved ones. It can affect people of all ages. Children like Hugo and Darragh, who prior to their transplant operations faced uncertain futures, can now look forward to a normal childhood thanks to organ donation.”

Leinster’s Darragh Fanning Supports CRY Charity Darrah has signed with Leinster until 2015 and has recently chosen Irish charity Cry (Cardiac Risk in the Young) as his charity partner. A centre for Cardio- vascular Risk in Young Persons was set up in Tallaght Hospital in 2007, which is supported by CRY. The best treatment of those potentially at risk includes expert assessment, access to genetic testing and psychological support and counselling – the CRYP Centre is the only clinic in the country that provides a complete free service. Almost 1500 patients can be seen each year in the CRYP Centre. The rising St. Marys wingman from Dublin said: “I am delighted to support CRY Ireland which is an extremely worthwhile charity. Each week one young person dies in Ireland from sudden cardiac death so I am delighted to raise awareness of this fantastic charity and its vital screening service and look forward to working with them.”

Game of the Season

Rovers 2 Derry City 0 The Gaffers first game in charge and Derry were the visitors hoping to spoil the party. Even though The Hoops probably put in some better home performances in other games throughout the season, the reason I’ve picked this game is because, in my opinion, this was the night the hope returned to Tallaght Stadium. Any regular visitors to the stadium this year would be well aware of the horrible atmosphere that had engulfed the place in the weeks preceding this match as the wheels came off towards the end of Trevor Croly’s spell in charge. The Candystripes had been the first visitors to Tallaght Stadium in March, on the opening weekend of the season, and if truth be told they stank the place out that day, parking the bus and frustrating everyone who had the misfortune to see them attempt to play football. Prior to kick off Pat Fenlon was introduced to the crowd to a great reaction and there was a genuine feel good factor about the place which had been absent for a very long time. The fans sang the new managers name and after a lacklustre first half the team did everything asked of it as the new regime got off to a flyer. Second-half goals from Ronan Finn and Dean Kelly ensured Pat had the dream beginning to his Rovers managerial career and everyone went home hopeful that the good times are just around the corner.

Game of the Season

Dundalk 1 Rovers 2

Having played out a tense and tight 0-0 draw in Tallaght three days beforehand, and with Dundalk flying at the top of the league, it was more in hope than confidence that a lot of Hoops fans made their way up the M1. But those who travelled were rewarded for their faith as Rovers fought back to claim an excellent victory and give the travelling fans one of the most memorable moments of the season. The home side had started the game positively but it was Sean O Connor who had the best chance of the first 30 mins as his curling shot was excellently tipped over the bar by Lilywhites keeper Peter Cherrie. Five minutes before half time disaster struck for the travelling Hoops as Darren Meenan sent in a dangerous free kick from out wide and with the Rovers defence pushing out Hoban found himself unmarked to head home. Dundalk were the better side for most of the second half and it looked like Rovers were heading out of the cup as the clock approached the last ten minutes. That was until Karl Sheppard came off the bench to score twice, the second coming with just two minutes left, and send the travelling Hoops into raptures sparking wonderful scenes of celebration and stunning the home crowd into silence.

Goal of the Season

Stephen Mc Phail

There were a few contenders in this category and notable mentions go to Gary McCabe for his volley vs. Longford in the Cup plus Sean O’Connor for his curler against UCD but I’ve decided to go for Stephen McPhail’s free kick on his debut at home to Glentoran in the Setanta Cup in February. On what was a dreary wet and windy night in Tallaght, McPhail’s goal lifted everyone who was there to witness both it and the romantic story taking place on the pitch; a brilliant debut goal scored by a boyhood Rovers fan who had overcome a life threatening illness just a few short years beforehand. The former Ireland international had only been on the pitch for eight minutes before he clipped a beautiful left footed free kick past Glen’s keeper Elliott Morris, bringing the home crowd to their feet. The Hoops went on to win 5-1 and the level of expectation for the year ahead was only raised after McPhail’s stunning introduction.

Player of the Year

Barry Murphy

Barry has stood out this year as one player who has consistently performed week in week out and he is my selection as Player of the Season. His attitude, his dedication to the cause and his moral courage is phenomenal and he has put in a host of memorable performances again this season. Since his return to the club two years ago he has brought a level of performance that hasn’t been matched by some of his team mates. It shows how much The Hoops have struggled at times this season when their goalkeeper is the best player, by some distance as well I might add. A few performances of Barry’s that come to mind are his outstanding efforts against Dundalk and Derry in the home FAI Cup ties and his performance against St Pat’s in the 1-0 defeat at Inchicore when he almost single handily repelled the home side. Goalkeepers can be the most under appreciated players on a team but Barry is certainly more than appreciated among both Hoops players and fans alike. In my opinion he was also unlucky to miss out to Cork’s Mark McNulty on the PFAI Team of the Year.

Writers’ Corner ON THE COAST ROAD DRIVING SOUTH FROM LEBANON TO ISREAL By Michael J Whelan What are these years if not an instant in eternity? This earthly life and all therein is but a dream by the side of the awakening we call by death and terror. A dream, yet all we see and do therein endures with God’s enduring. Kahlil Gibran (Lebanese-American poet) Eyes close and I’m there cruising along the coast road in the back of a white soft-topped U.N. jeep, rifle at my knee, sun warming my face, burning my outstretched arm in the open window. Date-palms shoot past, their curved fronds breaking the blue sky, the historic sea on my right shoulder. Salt air fills my lungs in place of dirt and dust, the border’s getting closer; this place is still beautiful. I know there are palm trees like these all over the South, a few cedar groves too in the Chouf Mountains, on Mount Lebanon itself though not as many as there once was when their numbers shaded the ancient Bedouin roaming the Levant on well worn caravan routes through Sidon and Tyre to the gates of Jerusalem, resting sometimes in the great Bekaa Valley, shepherds grazing their flocks.

This is the land of the Canaanites, the Phoenicians who traded from these beaches and ports and I know it can never be as it was, Alexander’s siege of Beirut can still be heard in the tracks of a tank that replaced the chariot, the bullet that replaced the arrow, the rise and fall empires. These are the Holy Lands of books, the Scripture and the Sura, the hills where crusaders marched and Islam stood its ground, where great armies clashed while vultures circled overhead and craters mark horizons to Judea.

60 DEBONAIR DEBUTANTE By Charles Branagan Sky scraper heels, spray tan, flowing gown looks magnificent, visitors entranced, enthralled, the glitz the glamour and the style. Stunning; the overwhelming consensus, outstanding, in a crowded field. Escort arrives, limousine departs glad not sad to see her leave. Dance the night away, return with, faded jaded memories. Back to everyday clothes as a new chapter unfolds; the sky’s the limit. Charles Branagan lives in Skerries and since picking up a copy in InTallaght on a trip to The Square, he has had several pieces printed on these pages. He has been writing poetry for a number of years.

I come in peace - not victorious or triumphant, no palms will be thrown under my feet when I enter the City of David. I open my eyes and it’s twenty years later. Michael J Whelan has served as a peacekeeper with the Irish Defence Forces in south Lebanon and Kosovo and is curator of the Irish Air Force Aviation Museum. He was runner-up for the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award in 2011. His poems and short stories have featured in The Moth, Cyphers, Wordlegs and other journals.
