Welcome Welcome to Edition 64 of InTallaght This month one of Tallaght’s most famous sons returns to the area to play a football match for the first time since he was a boy. Fettercairn Under 10’s provided the launch pad from which Robbie Keane went on to represent his country an astonishing 138 times scoring 65 goals in the process. A wonderful ambassador for both Tallaght and Ireland, the match between his club LA Galaxy and Shamrock Rovers gives the local community a chance to show their pride in what has been achieved by the man from Glenshane. In our interview with Robbie in this edition he says about himself and Richard Dunne; “We’ve done well for two lads from Tallaght. If we can do it anybody else can do it.” I hope any local young people looking for inspiration can take heed from these words. Our other interview is with awardwinning Dublin comedian David O’Doherty who is always a pleasure to talk to due to his imaginative way of looking at the world. As well as being an excellent standup he also writes books for children. We caught up with him to find out more about this area of his career. As always, please feel free to get in touch with us. We love to hear feedback from our readers.

10 SDCC Wins The Most Innovative Authority Category At The Lama Awards 2015

Support Dublin Simon And Get Cheaper Tickets To See Cornerstones In Civic Theatre

The LAMA Community and Council Awards 2015 in association with IPB Insurance took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Northwood Dublin on Saturday 24th January.

Presented by Runcible Spoon Theatre Company Cornerstones is a story of homelessness, the X Factor, and crushing first love. Cornerstones follows the lives of four homeless teenagers living in Dublin city centre. Ciara wants to go on The X Factor, Derry wants to be a crime-boss, Jonno and Mandy just want to keep up.

The awards provide a great opportunity to highlight and celebrate the work done within communities in partnership with local authorities. South Dublin County Council is delighted to announce that on this occasion we scooped the award for the Most Innovative Authority for the County Development Plan and Consultation Process.

Written by Bairbre Guilfoyle and directed by Clare Maguire, Cornerstones is a brutal but honest portrayal of the lives of a group of people that have been marginalised through both boom and bust, and are easy to dismiss. Between Friday 13th February and Saturday 21st February, if you use the discount code “SIMON” when booking your ticket, €2 for each ticket booked will be donated to Dublin Simon Community.

News First story-telling forum for cancer patients launched in Ireland The stories of Frank Russell from Blanchardstown and Rita Fahy from Tallaght are two of the first to feature on a new online forum which invites cancer patients to share their stories in order to help others cope with the diagnosis, treatment and recovery process.

their thoughts and feelings on their condition both for themselves and, importantly, for those more recent patients,” he says. Rita Fahy from Kilnamanagh in Tallaght also tells her story of battling cancer since 2003 and getting the all-clear from annual check-ups just last year.

Called the Lazarus Community Forum, it is a unique way for cancer patients to express their thoughts and feelings on their condition.

Rita says that the worst day for her was the day she was diagnosed and her advice to others who are diagnosed with cancer is to accept help offered. “Don’t try and deal with it alone”, she says. cancersupport.ie/lazarusforum/ritas-story/

The Lazarus Community Forum is the brainchild of Frank Russell. A former Air Corps Commondant and retired Inspector of Air Accidents, he has been diagnosed and treated for cancer twice.

Frank Russell says, “The idea for the Forum came from listening to cancer patients on social occasions during their stay on the LARCC Residential weeks. I heard some brave and uplifting stories and some sad ones too.

In 1998 he was diagnosed with neck cancer and at the time he was given two years to live. Then in 2007 he was diagnosed with prostrate cancer but again it was treated successfully. cancersupport. ie/lazarus-forum/franksstory/

“My sincere hope is that the Forum will open doors otherwise shut to ordinary cancer patients, and empower them to express their thoughts and feelings on their condition both for themselves and, importantly, for those more recent patients.”

“Telling their stories on the Lazarus Community Forum can be a powerful way for cancer patients to express

Robbie Keane

16 been in America, from people who wanted to come over and see me play, but it’s too far so it’s an opportunity for them now to come and watch me play.

INTERVIEW By Rachel Lynch

You said you’ve noticed the interest has increased a lot in the MLS in Ireland this year. When people in America ask you about our league what do you say?

Robbie Keane comes home to Tallaght this month with his club LA Galaxy for a highly anticipated friendly with Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium. Last year will probably go down as one of the most memorable of his career; an MLS Championship win; scorer of the deciding goal in the final; winner of the Most Valuable Player in the league and a goal for Ireland to break the all time record for goals scored in European Championship Qualifiers. InTallaght were honoured to meet up with Robbie on his recent trip home for the holidays to hear him talk about his childhood growing up and learning to play football in Tallaght, his advice for young children starting out in the game and his thoughts on the League of Ireland.

Robbie, how does it feel to be coming back to play in the area in which you grew up for the first time since you were a child? Yes, it is going to be the first time I’ve played in Tallaght since I was a kid and I’m delighted to bring the LA Galaxy to Ireland for this match. Unfortunately for the Irish fans it’s very hard InTallaghtMaster64.indd 16

They always ask me about the league and unfortunately it comes down to money. The MLS is a big, big organisation now with plenty of money. They get great crowds at the grounds, the stadiums are full week in, week out.

The problem with Ireland is there’s not a lot of money in the game here and money talks, doesn’t it? Also you need the to come over to LA and see me fans to be coming to watch the like to play a game and where I play, so it’s a great opportunity would like to play that game. Of games. There is a lot of quality for me to bring the Galaxy here course it was always going to be in the league here, the more that to play against Shamrock Rovers. Ireland. I think it was only right people see that the better it’s I’m very, very excited - hopefully to play against Shamrock Rovers, going to be for the league. we see a big crowd here and a being from Tallaght. very good game, that’d be great. We need to get young kids coming to watch these players How did you sell play whether that’s at Shamrock Did you have any input Rovers to the Galaxy Rovers, Pat’s or Dundalk, there’s in the decision to come - what did you tell some top, top players here. and play in Tallaght? them about the club? If people don’t come to the games it’s going to be difficult Ah yeah of course I did. Over the They obviously asked me about for this league to make progress last few years it was something them but they had done their without the funds. we always spoke about but homework anyway as soon as we didn’t really have many I had mentioned it. I told them Do you ever see a opportunities to do it. But this Rovers are a massive club in time where we’ll year we have the opportunity Ireland, a club that people are get more ex-Ireland to do it because we’re going very, very passionate about internationals coming to Sweden in February to play with great fans. 19 give it a boost, but it’s not a conversation I’ve had. But now because this game has come up it’s a conversation people are having with me. Certainly ex-internationals coming home would maybe bring some interest from supporters and media alike and that could be a good thing obviously. That’s what you want don’t you? You want the big profile - the more profile and coverage these games get the better it’s going to be not just for the League of Ireland but for Ireland going forward also. For young Irish footballers that want to be professionals, starting at Shamrock Rovers or Pats or Cork can give them a great opportunity to get started in the game. I was 17 when I started playing first team football, I would love to see a 17 year old now getting into a League of Ireland team and be given the opportunity to show what they can do here in this league and then they might get a massive move to England or wherever, but it’d be a good starting block. If you do that you give the clubs the opportunity for their younger players to go to England and get money for the club which they can then use to build the club. When I left Wolves for Coventry for £6 million they were able to build a new training ground with the money. If that could happen here it’s only going to enhance clubs.

Do you remember much about starting out in the game yourself with InTallaghtMaster64.indd 19

Fettercairn under 10s?

Yes of course, they are very happy memories, that’s where I started off, playing for Fettercairn, they’re great memories. My uncle was involved and they used to play me at right back first of all! Then the following season he took over as manager and moved me straight up front and that’s when the goals started coming. I played there for a few years before making the move to Crumlin. I’ve certainly got fond memories of playing on field, and the road, against my mates and that’s where you learn the skills. The problem nowadays with kids, and I’m probably guilty of it myself with my own kid, is that there’s too many distractions for them nowadays, too many Playstations and games that they can play inside instead of going outside and playing football as much as you can. For me, that was the only thing I knew growing up and it was something that was a big start for me and important for my development as a player by learning things like how to control a ball and how to control a ball in tough circumstances. I used to wake up in the morning just wanting to play football. I’d come home from school, just wanting to play football until my mother would be screaming at me in the evening to get me in!

that, “You can do it, you just have to practice.” If you don’t practice you won’t be able to do anything. You don’t stop learning and certainly at a young age that’s when you really learn the values of playing a lot and learning tricks or keeping the ball up, by practicing and doing it everyday as much as you can. I’d also say that every time you play give 100% and ultimately as a kid, enjoy it, enjoy playing. There are too many parents putting pressure on kids saying they have to win games, they have to do this or that. It’s about learning the life skills going forward about how to be a better person when you lose or if you win. Just enjoy it, it’s a great game. I get paid to do something I love doing, it doesn’t get any better than that. There are people who have to work jobs they hate because they have to provide for their family. Football is a great career and I’m very lucky, very fortunate, I’m blessed. Don’t think for one second I don’t feel lucky every day.

You’re following in the footsteps of your great pal, and fellow Tallaght man, Richard Dunne, who played here with Queen’s Park Rangers in August.

It must have been an unbelievable experience for the two of you What advice would you growing up around the have for young children corner from each other who want to play and then going on to football professionally? play for your country together and compete against one another in I keep saying to my own son the Premier League. when he says, “I can’t do this” 11/02/2015 22:29

20 Are you lads still close? Oh yeah of course, very, very close. Obviously we’d been room mates for Ireland for 15 years and unfortunately he’s retired from international football but is doing absolutely brilliantly with QPR and hopefully he can keep playing for another few years. We’re great friends and as you said he played here with QPR and I’m looking forward to coming here and playing as well. Both of us come from this area, Shamrock Rovers is only down the road from us, if you look at what we’ve achieved, both of us, in terms of international football and English club football, we’ve done well for two lads from Tallaght. If we can do it anybody else can do it. We used to play against each other all the time before we were professionals, him for Home Farm and myself for Crumlin. You could not forget Richie Dunne! He was two foot bigger than anyone else, absolutely huge on the field, he looked like a man and we looked like kids playing against him! I had some great games against him because Home Farm and Crumlin were usually in the finals. I think Crumlin had the upper hand over them!

Why do you think we’re not seeing as many young Irish players getting a chance in England? Well I think there are a few reasons. One is the development of young kids over here as I mentioned before and the fact kids have other distractions and it’s not like days gone by InTallaghtMaster64.indd 20

where you played football all day. Another reason is because in England at the moment there are a huge amount of foreign players coming into the game there and not just to play in the first teams.

2014 was an extremely successful year for you on a personal level. Which of your achievements last year gave you the most satisfaction?

Young kids of 14/15 are getting moved over from Spain or South America, or a host of other places, and it’s making it harder now, not just for the Irish but the English, Scots and Welsh kids as well, they’re all being affected by this massive influx. Young lads who come from just over the water or a few miles up the road are not getting opportunities because the clubs are picking the best young players from around the world.

All of them. To receive any award that’s voted for by your fellow professionals, like the Most Valuable Player is, is very satisfying. You play to win but you also want to enjoy it and embrace what you do and entertain people. If you can manage to do that, and I’ve been fortunate enough this year, then it’s a very satisfying feeling.

If you’re not the best player in Ireland the chances of going to England are going to be slim. It’s very, very competitive nowadays. But there are still a few young Irish players coming through and going to England and long may that continue because it can only benefit our own nation going forward.

All the other things came along nicely, scoring the winning goal was great because winning and scoring goals is what I love to do. To win the Championship couldn’t have capped off the year for me any better.

Finally Robbie, what are your hopes for 2015? Well I hope to continue to be a success and continue to build on what I did last year, if I can do that, and do better than last year I’ll be very happy. I always set a goal for myself to do better than I did the year before so hopefully that will be the case in 2015.

Can you see a time in the future where America may be an option for young Irish players? I don’t know, it certainly could be because it’s a great league and it’s a great country. If you have a chance to fulfil your dreams, if you’re a professional football player and you love playing the game it doesn’t matter where you are. If you want to play and be a success you might have to go somewhere else to do that and the USA might be an excellent option for a young Irish player. 11/02/2015 22:29

David O’Doherty INTERVIEW

had these brilliant pictures by Quentin Blake.

By Padraig Conlon

Did you draw on these experiences when you started writing books for children?

David O’Doherty is one of my favourite Irish comedians and someone whose career I’ve followed for the last decade. When the chance to get to have a word with him arose I grabbed it with both hands. As well as being a brilliant entertainer the Dubliner has also penned a number of children’s books. Last month one of these, titled Danger is Everywhere was picked for Dublin City Council’s Citywide Reading Campaign for children, an initiative which aims to get children aged 7 to 11 reading for fun and pleasure.

I’m really pleased it’s been picked because I tried to write a book that would appeal to committed readers but also kids who find books a bit intimidating and I’ve done that by filling it full of very, very, very silly jokes.

InTallaght Magazine went Were you a big reader along to the launch in the when you were a child Natural History Museum and was lucky enough to get to chat yourself? to David about this other very Yeah I was but I was kind of impressive string to his bow. scared of reading when I was a child because some books are How proud are you that just too scary. Well not scary but your book Danger is intimidating, the idea of them, Everywhere has been particularly if you get a big, picked for this year’s thick book! And then the thing Citywide Reading parents tend to do is buy the Programme? books for kids that they like and InTallaghtMaster64.indd 22

not what book the kid actually might find interesting. Very often the parent forgets what age they were when they liked it. I remember being given The Lord of The Rings when I was about nine and being like, “This is 900 pages Dad, what am I supposed to do with it?!” So I just kind of decided then that I don’t like books because there’s too much to it. I eventually found the books I liked when I was 10 through people like Roald Dahl, Michael Rosen, authors like that. I really loved a book of Rosen poems called Quick, Let’s Get Out of Here! You could read the poems over and over again and they were still hilarious, and it also

Yes I did because in writing this I tried to write a book that kids who don’t read very much will look at it. And…it’s so full of jokes! There’s a million stupid jokes in it. I like the idea of keeping kids awake at night because they can’t put this book down ‘cause they’re laughing too much. It’s got a bit of a story in it as well. I’ve tried to write a book that’ll get kids interested in reading. I’d love for this to be a book that would then get people reading other books like Wimpey Kid and things like that.

Are you a big reader nowadays? Yeah I am, I read an awful lot. At the moment I’m reading The Circle by Dave Eggers and it’s unbelievable, a great read. I was in university with Paul Murray who was on the Booker long list for Skippy Dies. He’s working on his new book at the moment and he’s a good man for telling me what to read. In the last six months I’ve become obsessed with just reading books about cyclists who were on drugs in the 1990’s. I’m a big cycling man! I now know more about cyclists who were on drugs in the 1990’s than anyone else in the world and I’d even go as far to say that I’m the world’s leading authority on that subject!

11/02/2015 22:30

23 Any plans to write a book about that in the future? (Laughs) Well, I don’t know but I think I’d be the first man to write a kids book on the cyclists of the 90’s all being on drugs! I kind’ve think sometimes that I’d like to write a comedy show for grown ups. I did one a few years ago where I was a crap Sir Ernest Shackleton. I did a solo show in character. I also have half an idea to do a show where I’m a 90’s cyclist. It’d have something of the operatic rise and fall and then redemption to all these guys’ careers. They will all come out at the end and say “Sorry it was all rubbish!” I now want to talk about my obsession with cycling. If I was to tell you I had eight bicycles it would not be a lie I’m afraid, sorry about that! I recently bought a bicycle which was an ex pro bike in the 90’s and because of the amount of drug taking going on back then I reckon if I ran my nose along that saddle I’d probably get slightly high from it!

There’s been a lot of talk recently that children today aren’t reading enough books and their attention spans may be suffering, would you agree or disagree? I don’t know if that’s true. I just remember when we were kids, I was there at the start of computer games, Ataris and stuff like that were coming out and we were all being told, InTallaghtMaster64.indd 23

“Oh it’s all different now!” Then remember when texting came along everyone was like, “Well that’s the end of kids!” I think about every five years children’s concentration spans are written off by the public at large but the thing is that books have always been with us.

what I realise now, is that secretly I’m a children’s entertainer who is pretending to do it for grown ups

The craziest Roald Dahl books that I loved when I was six, seven, eight, nine are still the most popular books today and they’re actually selling in bigger numbers now than they were then. As a comedian so much of my humour is based in that stuff. I was looking at some of the jokes I’ve put into this book and you know what, a lot of them are things that are basically in my grown up shows. So I think, what I realise now, is that secretly I’m a children’s entertainer who is pretending to do it for grown ups.

Finally David do you have any plans to write more books? Yes indeed I do. I don’t know whether I’m meant to tell anyone this but I’m writing the sequel to Danger is Everywhere, it’s called Danger is Still Everywhere so I have to go home after this and get my head into that. It’s really fun to be going out doing these readings for kids because you try and make kids laugh and put on a show and through laughter you really see what kids are into and what parts of the books they really identify with.

The sun was shining here on our centre mall at our Sunshine Party which took place on Saturday 30th January. The centre was jam-packed with holiday makers who made believe they were on a beach in sunny Spain with our giant sun lounge chair and oversized bucket, spades and sun glasses. Although all children seem to love being on the beach, sometimes you need to have some ideas for keeping them entertained, which is why we also had lots of other fun activities including face painting and arts and crafts activities. Cheeky Monkey also took some time out from building his new play area to join us on the day for some fun. We have dozens more familyfriendly activities planned for 2015 check our Facebook or the events page on our website for other upcoming events.

The Square is a great place to catch up with Breast Friends and share a coffee and a chat.

The Square is a great place to catch up with friends and share a coffee and a chat. Teresa Costello meets here at Starbucks on Level 2 to do just that regularly, but her story may be slightly different to yours. Teresa was diagnosed with breast cancer almost two years ago and while undergoing treatment was surprised by the lack of support and information for her age group. As a result of this she set up a group of women who also have or have had breast cancer in the past, with many of the ladies less than 40 years old. They began to meet regularly for coffee, and have now set up a Facebook page called “Breast Friends”. The page attracted around 600 likes in its first ten days of being active.

Through their Facebook and regular meet-ups the common goal is to try and achieve an increased awareness among the medical profession and women in the 25-45 age group for breast cancer. For more information or if you would like to join them for a coffee pop them a mail on Facebook.

story and sets out to find the men responsible for revenge, which unleashes the fury of a notorious gang leader.

You either like Western style films or you don’t, but having seen the trailer earlier this week I was shocked by how gripping the story was.

The corrupt and cowardly community betray Jon leaving him completely on his own to slay the outlaws and rid the town of the enemy. He goes from a once peaceful man to a vengeful hunter.

The Salvation is set in 1870’s America and follows a peaceful settler whose family have been murdered. Jon, played by Mads Mikkelsen is at the heart of the

PROJECT ALMANAC By Rachel Lynch

Did you enjoy Ashton Kutcher’s 2004 film The Butterfly Effect? If you did Project Almanac will be one you won’t want to miss this month. Although the film doesn’t have as dark of a storyline it is pretty similar. The plot centres on a group of teenagers who have stumbled across secret plans of a time machine. At first they are unsure as to what exactly the whole thing means but it doesn’t take long for them to construct the machine themselves.

They are now the people they have always wanted to be, in some cases rich and in others popular. It doesn’t take long for them to realise that changing the past has shocking consequences on the future and things begin to get out of control with the decisions they have made. Can they go back and make things as normal as possible or will the damage be irreparable?

Much to their shock the time machine works and the group initially go back in time to fix and undo situations in their past. Eventually having fixed all the flaws in their lives past and present they start to experience life in a new way, everything is great.

THE WEDDING RINGER By Rachel Lynch

What do you do when are due to be married but have nobody to take on the role of best man? Doug Harris, played by Josh Gad, is a lovable but socially awkward groom to be. Everything has been organised for the wedding so far to the woman of his dreams Gretchen everything but the best man. With less than two weeks to go, Doug is referred to Jimmy Callahan played by the hilariously funny Kevin Hart who is the owner and CEO of Best Man Inc, which provides flattering best men for people in need. Doug asks Jimmy to help him with seven groomsmen to match Gretchen’s bridesmaids, which

InTallaghtMaster64.indd 35

is something that has never been done before. Jimmy initially refuses to help Doug but after hearing his plea he agrees to help him out. The story that follows sees the two lads try to pull off one of the biggest wedding cons, and incidentally develop a real friendship, in spite of their business arrangement.

Music CRY MONSTER CRY Postcards

The track opens to the sound of birdsong which creates a mood of being awake early in the morning at the beginning of a new day. It is a fitting start to what is a very upbeat and reassuring song which consists of some beautiful vocal harmonies accompanied by an explosive brass section. The brothers are on record as saying the song deals with the worries and anxieties that can seem even worse in the dead of the night, but also with the hope that things can and will get better. Richie and Jamie, who hail from Howth, take their inspiration from artists like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel as well as their hometown and the story telling traditions of Ireland. Their new material is a result of their taking time away from touring to hone their song writing craft. “We felt that we had to take the time to really make the most of the ideas that were coming to us”, Jamie says. “Recording InTallaghtMaster64.indd 38

Ghost

By Padraig Conlon

Rudytrixx are a Dublin-based band formed three years ago when they were all students at BIMM College and Ghost is the third single release from this exciting and adventurous group. Consisting of Callan Qualtar (vocals), Sean Leonard (guitar), Johnny McGuiness (Bass), Sean McManamon (Guitar) and Emmet Harigan (Drums), RudyTrixX’s musical style draws from a wide range of influences, ranging from Two Door Cinema Club to Alt-J, and Arctic Monkeys to Bombay Bicycle Club.

By Padraig Conlon

Cry Monster Cry are a two piece folk band consisting of Dublin brothers Richie and Jamie Martin and Postcards is the excellent first single off their soon to be released debut album Rhythm of Dawn.

a debut album is a dream that we have both always had”. Richie adds, “There were songs that we had to puzzle out. We ended up with a theme running throughout the whole album and we treat it like a cyclical piece of work. You are supposed to have come full circle by the time you reach the end.”

This track reminds me of one of those influences, Alt-J, and their single Breezeblocks in particular. But don’t be mistaken and think Ghost is a rip off, or the lads are any kind of tribute act. They’ve taken the alt indie genre and put their own take on it and in my opinion they’ve done an excellent job as Ghost is a track I’ve listened to again and again since initially hearing it. The song deals with the breakdown of a relationship with lead singer Callan telling the object of his affections that “if you go, I’m gonna be a ghost…” His vocal is very well delivered and the rest of the band help to create a haunting background mood where the listener is left in a kind of limbo between sadness and happiness.

The single is also accompanied by a very impressive video featuring Love/Hate actor Ian Lloyd Anderson as a dejected postman who is searching for something more in his life. Postcards was produced by legendary Abbey Road veteran engineer Guy Massey (The Beatles, Ed Sheeran, Manic Street Preachers) and is available on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon now. Album Rhythm of Dawn is released on March 6th. 11/02/2015 22:30

WWE Network

40

By Colm O’Muirí

If you want to relive all of those iconic WWE moments and witness all futures ones, then the WWE Network is for you. Launched last February in the United States, the WWE Network is now available in Ireland for the low price of €12.99 a month. To put that in context, the recent Royal Rumble event on Sky Box office would have cost you €24.99. The WWE Network is in HD and has proved to be a big hit with fans of wrestling, with the service having reached one million subscribers on January 27th. That figure is sure to rise over the coming months as the service expands into different countries. What do you get for your money? You get all 12 live pay per views (PPV) including ‘The grandest stage of them all’ Wrestlemania. You don’t have to watch the PPV live

either as all PPV’s are available on the service.

ECW and WCW PPV and classic matches.

WWE Network, aside from showing SmackDown and Raw live every week, will also feature replays of SmackDown and Raw from throughout the years, including the glory days of the WWF Attitude era, uncut and uncensored. The on demand service also features all WWE,

The WWE Network is a 24/7 service with new and original content as well as the WWE Documentaries. Having seen some of these WWE documentaries and countdowns they are well worth the trip down memory lane. Some of the other content available on the service is: Content from WWE libraries, WCW Clash of Champions, WWE Tough Enough and Total Divas. You can view the WWE Network just like Netflix, from your laptop/ pc or you can stream it through your consoles.

InTallaghtMaster64.indd 40

The service is available on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 as well as the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. It is also available through Tablets, Smartphones, Apple TV and all the usual devices. Unfortunately, unlike in the United States there is no free trial for the WWE Network in Ireland. However you can sign up for the month at the €12.99 price with no further commitment and you can cancel it at any time as well. That means that instead of paying €24.99 for Wrestlemania on Sky Box Office, which is what normally happens, you could subscribe to the WWE Network for the month of March for €12.99 and get to watch Wrestlemania also. The WWE Network looks like a great service for fans of the WWE and those of us who are football fans could only dream of a service like this.

Game DYING LIGHT

MORTAL KOMBAT X

By Colm O’Muirí

Dying Light is a first person survival horror video game from developers Techland and published by Warner Bros.

The game is set in the fictitious city of Harran where you assume the role of Kyle Crane, an undercover operative who is sent to infiltrate the quarantine zone. Dying Light features a vast open world which you must traverse in your fight for survival. As the game progresses Kyle must decide whether or not to complete the mission he was sent into the quarantine area to do, or to protect the city’s survivors lead by Harris Brecken.

Finish him! Whether you were playing as Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden or countless other Mortal Kombat characters over the years, that is what you wanted to hear and see on your screen.

During the day you roam the city using Kyle’s Parkour to scavenge for supplies and weapons. The more upgrades you receive, the better his parkour becomes which increases your ability to survive in Harran. When night falls you become the hunted. Those infected - the zombies - undergo a transformation at night which is expected to give a new dimension to the gameplay of the game.

Dying Light is available on both next-gen consoles the PS4 and Xbox One as well as PC.

Mortal Kombat X will feature new and returning characters, such as the three previously mentioned. Kano, Reptile and Goro will also be available in the game. Johnny Cage, who was one of my favourites, hasn’t been mentioned, but among the new

Dying Light has over 50 hours of gameplay in the full version of the game, once all the downloadable content is added to the game. The game allows you to customise your weapons, which can include attaching a lighter to a cleaver or wrapping electrified barbed wire around your hammer. As well as the main campaign, Dying Light will also feature an online multiplayer co-op mode which will allow up to four players. There will also be a game mode known as ‘Be the Zombie’. 11/02/2015 22:31

characters listed is Cassie Cage, his daughter. Other new characters are Kotal Kahn, Ferra-Torr and D’Vorah. Each character will have three different versions. This means that each version will have their own fighting style, special moves, abilities and strategies. The storyline in the game takes place after the events of 2011’s Mortal Kombat and it will eventually transition into twenty five years into the future as the game progresses.

Mortal Kombat is known for being a fun and violent game and for a sample of what is to come when the game is released on April 14th check out the official Mortal Kombat X introduction trailer, which features Sub Zero and Scorpion. Motors DACIA It’s hard to believe that Dacia are a relatively new brand, as it seems as though they have been here on the Irish market for a very long time. They have evolved over the past few years and are well positioned on the market with sales increasing every year. The key to Dacia’s success has been their simple formula which includes space and quality at unbelievable prices. The question everyone wants to know is just how do Dacia offer so much for so little? All Dacia models are fitted with the basic essentials as standard without any unwanted extras built into the cost, this means you can choose the car to suit you. As a brand of the Renault Group, Dacia is a proven reliable car from the Sandero hatchback to the Duster SUV. Dacia cars are simple to use and affordable to own.

also as practical as a car could be. Its efficient 1.5-Litre Diesel Engine is something else to be added to the pros list, not to mention the three year warranty with up to 100,000km. Prices start at an unbelievable €16,190, with road tax no more than €280 for the year. Next up in the Dacia range is the Sandero Stepway. It has all the style of a Sports Utility Vehicle with all the practicality of a family hatchback. Your raised positioning in the front seat gives you a commanding view of the road ahead.

The Dacia Stepway is available in two trim levels from Alternative to Signature and ranges in price from €12,290 up to €15,690 with the annual road tax from €190 up to €270. The third model in the range is the Dacia Logan MCV. This is the perfect car for those larger families or if you are someone that enjoys your space, then this is the car for you. It offers big car features at small car prices. For those seeking ultimate fuel efficiency, then the Logan MCV is one to keep your eye on. It is available in three engine

options: 1.2 16V 75 (Road Tax €280), TCe 90 (Road Tax €200) and dCi 90 (Road Tax €180). Finally we have the Dacia Sandero. Again like the rest, its price is virtually unbeatable starting from just €9,990. This is one model out of the four I would really advise you take on a test drive. If you are not won over by the styling of the car then you will certainly be impressed with the drive. Check out www.dacia.ie for all the latest deals and financing options today or to book your test drive!

Book

DONNA TARTT The Goldfinch

This book was the one I was most excited about reading from the haul I brought back from my Mum’s bookshelves after Christmas. Despite running to nearly 900 pages (and in paperback form rather than Kindle at that), I devoured The Goldfinch in around two weeks which is testament to how engrossed I was within the first chapter or so. I had read and enjoyed The Secret History by the same author many years ago and this one had been getting rave reviews. I can agree wholeheartedly with the general consenus, this is a really good book. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a thirteen-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings

By Gwen Taylour to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art. As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love - and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. Theo is a likeable protagonist and I felt so much for him as a young teenager, having lost his beloved mother and adrift in an adult world that makes no sense without her. He tries to blot it all out with drugs and alcohol and a destructive friendship with Boris, a boy in a similarly bleak situation. That kind of reaction is totally understandable given the life he was living, but further on in the book, when he has grown up and found his feet, addiction and risky business decisions made me want to shake him. I can see how he got there but I just wish he could put his past behind him. He turns out a lot more like his father than he would have realised in his youth. There is thrum of urgency running through the pages of a lot of this book and I think that’s why I got so drawn in. It’s the best book I’ve read in quite a while, though I did feel the last section was a bit too philosophical for my taste. Overall though, brilliant, just brilliant. I loved it.

About The Author Donna Tartt (born 23 December 1963) is an American writer who received critical acclaim for her first two novels, The Secret History (1992) and The Little Friend (2002). Tartt was the 2003 winner of the WH Smith Literary Award for The Little Friend. The daughter of Don and Taylor Tartt, she was born in Greenwood, Mississippi but raised 32 miles away in Grenada, Mississippi. At age five, she wrote her first poem, and she first saw publication in a Mississippi literary review when she was 13 years old. Enrolling in the University of Mississippi in 1981, she pledged to the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma. Her writing caught the attention of Willie Morris while she was a freshman. Following a recommendation from Morris, Barry Hannah, then an Ole Miss Writerin-Residence, admitted Tartt into his graduate short story course where, stated Hannah, she ranked higher than the graduate students. Following the suggestion of Morris and others, she transferred to Bennington College in 1982. There she met Bennington students Bret Easton Ellis and Jill Eisenstadt, who also went on to become successful novelists.

Business Funding Boost For Dublin Entrepreneurs

Runlastman.com Gets Funds For Growth RunLastMan.com, an Irish start-up which provides an online fundraising platform for clubs and charities across Ireland and the UK, has announced €120,000 in new funding from angel investors in Ireland. Bootstrapped up to now by the founding team, this investment values the two year old company at €1.1 million.

The new Dublin Startup Community Fund is an example of how established businesses can help new startups to reach their potential, according to new Dublin Chamber of Commerce President Greg Clarke. The new €20,000 Dublin Startup Community Fund has been launched by Dublin’s Commissioner for Startups Niamh Bushnell. The Community Fund is being co-funded by a number of private organisations,

including Dublin Chamber of Commerce and Bank of Ireland, and will provide small grants of up to €500 to organisations looking to promote startup events. “Established companies and business people have a responsibility to help our burgeoning companies and entrepreneurs to establish themselves, grow and create jobs. It is encouraging to see such spirit being shown by private firms in their support of the new Startup Community

Irish unemployment rate falls to 10.5%

The company secured the substantial investment from three private angel investors. The investors were encouraged by the €130,000 which has gone through the site in the past 12 months, which now boasts in excess of 13,000 registered players. The idea behind the company was to allow club PROs and charity officers to save time and effort in managing fundraisers by hosting them through the site’s fully automated service. Initially the product was based around the popular ‘Last Man Standing’ competitions for the English Premier League. Since launch the company has diversified to include games on rugby, GAA, NFL and golf.

Fund. The amounts available to community-focused entrepreneurial organisations under the Community Fund may seem small, but the funding will go a long way to amplifying the dialogue around entrepreneurship and innovation in the Dublin region,” Mr Clarke said.

Irish unemployment rates fell in 2014, from 12.1% in December 2013 to 10.5% in December 2014, according to the latest Eurostat figures.

Architects Chosen For New RDS Arena A consortium of Dublinbased Newenham Mulligan Architects and Londonbased Grimshaw Architects has won the international design competition for the multimillion-euro redevelopment of the RDS Arena. The RDS, with their partners Leinster Rugby, will work to

complete the design of a world class RDS Arena that will host professional rugby matches, equestrian sports, music concerts and other appropriate sporting opportunities as they arise.

This means there were 35,000 fewer unemployed people registered at the end of 2014 than in December of the previous year. Unemployment in the euro area as a whole stood at 11.4% in December, down from 11.8% a year before.

Managed by the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland (RIAI), the competition saw five designs anonymously shortlisted, with the winner chosen by a five-person expert jury.

49 ESB EnergyFit ESB, the Official Energy Partner to the GAA, has teamed up with St. Jude’s and Dublin hurler Danny Sutcliffe, Facilities Manager Declan Feore, Naomh Mearnog and Dublin Footballer Shane Carthy and club Treasurer Donal Walters to reveal the results of the ESB “EnergyFit” programme in association with FutureFit. St. Jude’s and Naomh Mearnog, two of the participants, are projected to save almost €20,000 between them in Year 1, with continuing projected long-term savings which can be reinvested in the club’s development. Having already installed a solar thermal array, St. Jude’s GAA is well aware of the benefits of energy efficiency. Championed by founding member and current Facilities Manager Declan Feore, the club worked tirelessly alongside ESB and FutureFit to raise funding for new LED lighting. Replacing the lights alone is projected to save the club €7,826 annually. Throughout 2014, ESB worked in conjunction with FutureFit, the Irish energy efficiency company, to refine the programme. Along with the SEAI and GAA, ESB also provided funding to each club that successfully completed the BEC process. The programme is estimated to have delivered an average saving of €9,026 per annum to each of the participating GAA clubs.

National Gallery Upgrade Creating 300 Jobs In Dublin A €20m investment in the National Gallery of Ireland will provide 300 jobs during the construction phase. The planned development is the largest single refurbishement of the gallery since it opened in 1864. The project, which will result in a larger, more eco-friendly gallery, is expected to take three years.

TCD Scientists Funded For Big Ideas Two Trinity College Dublin scientists, one researching the printing of supercapacitors and the other looking at rebuilding damaged cartilage in the body, have been awarded “Proof of Concept” funds. The AMBER (the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded materials science centre, hosted in TCD) researchers have been announced as recipients of its grants from the European Research Council (ERC). This funding will provide Prof. Valeria Nicolosi and Prof. Fergal O’Brien with €150,000 in funding each over 18 months to help them bridge the gap between their existing frontier research and its commercial applications.

Belgard Athletic Back In Business Belgard Athletic was founded as a schoolboy club in 1976 and over the next two decades success followed on the pitch, where after being runners up in Divisions 2 and 3 of the AUL competition the club finally won the Division 1 title.

Judes News Congratulations to St Judes’ Hannah Hegarty who has been chosen to captain BOTH the Dublin Minor Football and Camogie Teams, a first for the club and a great achievement. St Judes GAA club urgently require a manager for the Junior Camogie Team. There is a great squad in place and anyone from within or outside the club with a keen interest in camogie is invited to put themselves forward. Ideally the club would like to see a lady take the position and would encourage all ex camogie players to consider the role. Anybody interested should contact Oisin O’Donnell 087 790 4664, Mary Scanlon 087 248 3668 or Charlie Hennessy 087 918 2711.

Boden Dancers set for Strictly Come Dancing The Ballyboden St Enda’s Strictly the Sequel event will take place at City West Hotel on February 27th. The event was a massive success last year and with 32 dancers of all ages involved this time around it promises to be a great night! Yet, despite all this success and narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier C Division in 2004/2005 the club unfortunately folded at the end of that season. Fast forward to summer 2012 when a number of ex-players and locals, notably Graham Costigan, Eoghan McDonagh, Graham Kearney and Mick Lacey reformed the club and played their first friendly game in over seven years against Clondalkin Celtic in June 2012.

Having successfully reformed, the club re-entered the AUL in the Division 3 Saturday, playing their first competitive game away to St Itas in August 2012 and despite a difficult start to the campaign went on an impressive run that saw them finish fourth in the division. Since then the club has gone from strength to strength, winning the AUL Division 3 Saturday league 2013/14 under the management of Graham Costigan and assistant Chris Taylor before adding the Leinster Junior Shield to the trophy cabinet in May 2014. Belgard Athletic have moved to the Leinster Senior League for the 2014/15 season and currently sit atop Division 2 and with new assistant manager Jimmy Cahill on board and the club will continue to strive for success and build towards a bright future.

Clondalkin Captain to represent Ireland Clondalkin Rugby Club Captain Mairead Holohan has been selected on the Irish Development squad for the Rugby Sevens. The Rugby Sevens will be instated at the 2016 Summer Olympics which take place in Rio de Janeiro and will see both men and women’s contests taking place. The IRFU have been working hard to build up the sevens game within the country looking forward to the Olympics and with special concentration being placed on the women’s game. Holohan had the honour of being selected for and playing for Leinster in 2014 and continues her fine rise in the game with this recent selection. She will be training with the squad until March when there will be an internal tournament held within the Senior Squad.

Contestants Needed for Paddy’s Day Tug of War The St Patrick’s Day Tallaght Festival is an alcohol-free event aimed at celebrating Tallaght’s diverse culture and talent through an all-inclusive event. Boden win Under 21 Championship Ballyboden St Enda’s 1-5 Raheny 0-7 Ballyboden St Enda’s captured the U-21 Football Championship on Saturday February 7th after a nail-biting final against a resilient Raheny side. Raheny kicked off the scoring a minute into the game through a pointed free and it was the wake-up call ‘Boden needed as they went up a gear and began to tackle aggressively across the pitch, winning the ball in contact time and again. Tom Hanafin was in fine form as he assisted his backs from a sweeper position and when James Madden disposed Raheny’s Brian Fenton the ball was passed skilfully forward through Conor Dooley and Colm Basquel before Alan Flood struck home the game’s only goal. With a goal to their name the ‘Boden boys began to fire on all cylinders and points from Dooley, Basquel, Flood and Sam Molony left the Firhouse Road side with a 1-4 to 0-3 lead at the break. Raheny came out fighting after the break and threw everything they had at Ballyboden, whose brilliant defence meant that Raheny could only manage one score from play in the second half. Boden were guilty of throwing away a number of gifted chances and only had a fisted James Madden point to add to their first half tally come the end of the game. Nonetheless Boden came out victorious and were worthy winners on the day when they won their first U-21 football championship final since 2003. Well done to the squad, the mentors and all those involved!!

Doyle Set to Deliver in Championship Irishman Eoin Doyle has secured a move to Championship side Cardiff City after they agreed terms with League One outfit Chesterfield on transfer deadline day. The Tallaght Native, who had scored 25 goals in all competitions for Chesterfield this season made the move after a busy deadline day which saw him linked with Sheffield United, Preston North End and Premier League side West Brom. The two and a half year contract with Cardiff was signed when they finalised the deal for a reported €1.25million which will also include potential add-ons. Doyle had previous spells with Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers in the Airtricity League before making the move to Hibernian in the SPL where he scored 14 goals in 18 months under then manager Pat Fenlon. Since then he has prospered at Chesterfield who he helped win promotion to League One last season before embarking on his impressive run of goals this season, which saw him pave the way for a move to ambitious Championship side Cardiff City.

Mikey Drennan

54

Mikey Drennan became Pat Fenlon’s sixth signing of the close season at the end of last month. The highly rated striker has spent the last four years with Aston Villa. Since making his debut for the Republic of Ireland Under 16’s in 2009 (for whom he got player of the year) he has represented his country at all levels up to Under 21. Last year he spent spells on loan with Carlisle United and Portsmouth and he arrives at The Hoops as a proven scorer of goals at every level he has played at so far.

Welcome to Shamrock Rovers Mikey. How does it feel to have signed for the Hoops? I feel very happy, it’s a good opportunity for me and hopefully now I can kick-start my career here because it hasn’t gone according to plan. Hopefully I’ll start scoring some goals and show the fans what I can really do.

How did the move come about? It just came about from people knowing that I could leave Villa. When that became known people started asking questions and seeing would I be interested in a move, just stuff like that

InTallaghtMaster64.indd 54

really. A few clubs came in but Rovers stood out for me.

What was it about Rovers that made you decide to move to Tallaght? Rovers stood out for me because of their tradition as the biggest club in Ireland and I’ve heard the fans are amazing as well. It’s been a pleasure to come and sign here.

Of course you played in Tallaght Stadium this time last year for the Ireland U21’s against Montenegro so you know your way around then? Yes a small bit! It’s a very nice stadium and the pitch is good as well so I’m looking forward to playing here.

Could you tell the supporters where you play, what your style of play is and what you think you’ll bring to the team? I play as a striker and my style would be running in behind the defence, my movement off the ball would be another aspect and I’m a finisher. I can score some goals and hopefully if I get the service I know I’ll score. I think I’ll bring handwork, determination, a will to win. I always want to win, I hate losing.

You’ve had a wonderful youth career with both Aston Villla and the Republic of Ireland, are you confident you can start scoring regularly again? Yes I am, that’s what I’m hoping for. I think I can get the service, if I play, but the main thing is to work hard for the team and

11/02/2015 22:32

55 hopefully the goals will come after that.

How do you look back on your time at Villa? I’ve had some good times and some bad times, it’s been mixed. Probably the last few years haven’t gone as well for me as I was out with a foot injury that didn’t help me. I was out for about nine or ten months, which could have been less but stuff happened. The Next Gen experience in 2013 was probably the highlight of my time over there. We won the tournament, which was a European-wide competition for Under 19’s, sort of like an underage Champions League. I got injured in the last 16, I was top scorer when it happened. That was a really good experience for me, scoring all those goals against the best players and teams in Europe. Hopefully I can find that form again and improve myself as a player.

Mikey Drennan Whereabouts in Ireland Did you have much are you from? dealings with Roy Keane during his short I’m from Kilkenny, the city. spell with the club? Don’t take this the wrong way Mikey but Kilkenny is not a place renowned for producing soccer players. Were you also a hurler in your younger days? (Laughs) Yeah I played a bit of hurling, I was alright. I played with James Stephens’ GAA and we won a Feile, an All Ireland - we were a good team. I still go for a puck around with the lads. When I was over in England I’d go for a puck around with the other Irish lads against the wall, just to keep the interest like!

No I never got to speak to him at all because he was working with the first team and I was with the under 21s. He used to go for a puck

around on his own in the mornings and he said he’d go for a puck around with me but it never happened because he left before we got around to it! Would’ve been good to puck around with a Cork man and test his touch a bit!

Finally Mikey what are your hopes for the year ahead? I can’t wait to get started and prove myself. It’s good to be back home, I think it’s the right time for me to be back. Hopefully the next ten months will bring success, goals and trophies. I want to win everything. Rovers need to be winning leagues and I’m going to give everything to try and make that happen.

The Aston Villa Academy is well renowned as a wonderful place for young players, do you feel you got a good football education there? Yes I did, definitely. Tony McAndrew, Sean Bennett, Kevin McDonald, Gordon Cowens as well, they are all brilliant coaches and taught me so much. There’s a few more that I’m probably leaving out. They developed me a lot and I’d like to thank them but it’s time to move on now. InTallaghtMaster64.indd 55
