A NOTE FROM

website

THE EDITOR Welcome to the July issue of InTallaght! Well summer is well and truly here and we’ve had more than a few days at 21°C, so we hope you’ve been enjoying it while you can. As you can see we’ve been very busy at InTallaght Towers putting together a bigger and better magazine for you to enjoy. With the amazing Ed Sheeran coming to visit Dublin at the end of July we thought we would look at the reasons why he is so popular, and apart from his endless talent as a musician, we think it’s because he is such a nice guy to everyone. Seriously, have you ever heard of a musician doing so much kind stuff for his fans? Turning up to serenade wedding couples, singing over the phone to terminal patients and giving away tickets to his shows as if they grew on trees! We would say he’s a saint, but he actually seems a lot more craic than that, and he likes a pint too. We also interviewed the wonderful Glenda Gilson, one of Ireland’s most recognisable presenters and ex-models. Glenda spilled the beans on the joys of presenting TV3’s Xposé, and how it’s not always the most glamorous of jobs at times. She also told us that she still has a few celebrities on her wish list to work through.

Security Upgrades at Sean Walsh Park by genna patterson ____________________________ South Dublin County Council has confirmed new CCTV provision at Sean Walsh Park in Watergate, Tallaght. Local councillor Charlie O’Connor had campaigned for such provision following the recent increase in crime in this popular local park and had stressed to Council Management the importance of protecting users of the facility. The Council said, “The Council has recently issued an order to our CCTV

provider to install new cameras at the footbridge leading from Sean Walsh Park to the Square Shopping Centre, to upgrade the links from the CCTV system back to the maintenance depot in Sean Walsh Park and to the traffic centre at County Hall. The Council will also provide access to the new cameras to the Security/Operations Centre at the Square Shopping Centre.” The Council has assured that the system will be monitored, fully operational and capable of providing clear and good quality footage which will assist in the identification of anyone who might break the law or engage in anti-social behaviour at the locations covered by the CCTV.

Senator Zappone Seeking Dáil Seat by genna patterson ____________________________ Senator Katherine Zappone is seeking a Dáil seat in Dublin South West by running as an Independent candidate. She says that it is clear that local people are looking for a strong voice in the Dáil to demand policies which will deliver for Tallaght, Rathfarnham and Citywest. Senator Zappone said, “It is time for our communities to have a strong voice in the Dáil which can deliver fairer policies and help families overcome the challenges they face on a daily basis.” Senator Zappone said that issues which require immediate attention include the provision of affordable early education and care, the reversal of the changes which are not only leaving lone parent families out of pocket but denying them the opportunity to take up work, the provision of affordable housing in local areas and better access to higher education so people can improve their job prospects.

Tallaght Court Calls For Insurance For Cyclists by genna patterson __________________________ Tallaght District Court Judge Bridget Reilly has called for cyclists to have insurance. The call was in response to a cyclist in Terenure found to be cycling “without reasonable consideration” through a red light without looking, while on a mobile phone. Gardaí stopped the cyclist and took his details. The cyclist had previous convictions and was ordered to make a donation to the LauraLynn

Foundation. Judge Reilly said, “cyclists can cause terrible accidents by their actions,” and said that bicycle insurance should be implemented. More recently, Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe has issued fixed charge notices for cyclists who commit certain traffic offences. The charges at €40 per offence, include not having lights on during night hours, cycling in pedestrianised areas, cycling through red traffic lights and red cycle lights and failing to stop at a school warden sign. There were also fines introduced for cycling without reasonable consideration and proceeding beyond a stop line, barrier or half barrier at a railway crossing, swing bridge or lifting bridge when red lamps are flashing.

Senator Zappone Urges Tenants To Check Their Rights by genna patterson ____________________________ Senator Katharine Zappone has urged tenants in Tallaght, Citywest and Rathfarnham to check their rights for rented accommodation. The Senator has launched an awareness campaign and a new ‘fast-track’ service being offered by the Private Residential Tenancies Board to resolve disputes between tenants and landlords which she said is welcome at a time when many fear losing their homes. Senator Zappone said, “Resolving the housing crisis is complex and there is not a simple solution, what is clear is that the rental sector has a role to play in ensuring local people and families can count on having a place to call home…For too many that most basic right of having a home is under threat and it is vital that all of the issues involved are addressed.” Most of the information is readily available online at prtb.ie or can be requested by post by calling 0818 303037.

I go to Dollymount for my NCT, they said the suspension is grand. I’m not going to the beach today, I’m too busy, I’ve a lot of stuff planned for this afternoon. I was born in Moore Street, well I was born in the old Coombe but I lived on Moore Street. I moved to Tallaght when the Germans were here! “The wife’s dead seven years now. I miss her, there’s just me and my daughter at home, she’s 31, we’re doing alright you know, you just have to get on with it. I go down to the cemetery every day. It’s in Newlands’ Cross so it’s handy for me to get to. Her name was Carmel, she was a Tipperary woman. Making us pensioners pay?! We shouldn’t have to pay for it, sure the money we’re getting doesn’t allow us to pay for water rates. It’s crazy. This current government should be let out to feck, bring Fianna Fail back. They should spend less time blaming Fianna Fail for everything. Enda Kenny, that fella is a snob. He’s a real Dun Laoghaire man isn’t he?! I know he’s from the West of Ireland but he goes on like them ones from Dun Laoghaire, la dee laa! ED SHEERAN

The Exceptional ED With so many celebrities acting the diva these days, it’s nice to see that Ed Sheeran, due to play Croke park in July, is leading the way for the nice guys. by genna patterson @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

Ed Sheeran is scheduled to play the biggest outdoor venue in Ireland, Croke Park on July 24th and 25th. Seeing as the stadium

has a capacity of over 80,000 people, that’s over 160,000 fans in Dublin and probably from all over Ireland coming to see the 24-year-old singer. Tickets were sold out within an hour of going on sale with many queueing outside ticket merchants for hours beforehand. As a star who worked his way up to fame by playing small pubs, coffee houses and free gigs, that’s quite the achievement. Strangely enough and quite inspiringly though Ed doesn’t subscribe to the diva mentality like so many of the world’s famous people. In fact, there’s no denying that Ed is one of the world’s nicest musicians, and a really sound guy. The kind of guy you could have a pint with down the local and not feel too overwhelmed by. He could teach other celebrities something in the way of manners and humbleness too. With ‘superstars’ like Kanye West lording it about and basically acting like he thinks he’s a god (his last album was called Yeezus and he posed as Jesus

on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine), there is definitely a need for more down-to-earth role models in the pop world. So what is the evidence that shows Ed to be so wonderful? For one, Ed was in a shopping mall in West Alberta, Canada this June when he heard a fan, Sydney Bourbeau, singing his hit song Thinking Out Loud as part of a karaoke event. Before she knew what was happening, the 13-year-old was joined on stage and Ed was duetting with

her. Not only that, but he invited her and a friend to go to his gig later that weekend at Rexall Place. She told The Edmonton Journal, “I was like, should I stop? I didn’t want to stop, but I wanted to talk to him. This is, like, the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” This wasn’t even a one-off gesture from Ed – there is a long list of things he has done to be nice to his fans. Ed often responds to Twitter campaigns such as the one where cystic fibrosis sufferer Triona Priestley from Dublin wanted to hear him sing to her before she passed away. Ed called her up and fulfilled her wish. He then dedicated his song Little Bird to her on his next gig in Dublin.

// 19

ED SHEERAN

It’s a pity many other stars don’t share this professional view, Justin Bieber for one

On the Late Late Toy Show last Christmas, Ed also surprised 11-yearold Aimee Keogh by turning up and singing with her to a karaoke game she was reviewing. If that wasn’t enough he then gave her and her family tickets to go to his next London gig. Aimee told The Ray D’Arcy Show afterwards, “I’ve watched myself back on it many a time and no matter how many times I watched it, it hasn’t really sunk in. My knees were shaking and I thought I was going to collapse. It was a once-in-alifetime opportunity.” So Ed seems set on making his fans’ dreams come true, one by one. Furthermore, in February last year Ed donated eight bags of his old stage and photoshoot clothes to St Elizabeth Hospice charity shop in Framlingham, Sussex and then tweeted his fans where

20 // #intallaght / TWEET US

to buy them, raising some muchneeded funds (£4,000) for the shops. Then again after the Grammys in February he donated his clothes from the event in Los Angeles where he was nominated for three awards. Back in March Ed once again showed his willingness to make his fans lives better with a surprise visit. When Matt and Kya Debono of Sydney, Australia couldn’t afford to have the wedding of their dreams, KIIS 1065 radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O stepped in to make it happen with a $60,000 budget. They also arranged for Ed to drop in and sing to them. Without fuss or ceremony, he walked in and took to the stage to wish them a happy wedding day, then performed his single Thinking Out Loud for the wedding couple and their guests. As he was leaving he said, “Have a good wedding day, make lots of babies tonight!” to the delighted couple. It’s become so common for Ed to show up and surprise his fans that Waterford Whispers, the satire news website mockingly published a guide called How To Avoid Surprise Visits From Ed Sheeran, which Ed retweeted on his twitter account, showing he has a sense of humour. Another instance was in January when Noel Gallagher of Oasis fame slagged Ed off when he told NME magazine, “I don’t think I can live in a world where that’s even possible. When you hear that kind of polished pop and then there’s a ginger guy with a guitar it seems subversive, but it’s not.” Ed shrugged off the slight and happily

tweeted a reply saying, “I can live in it, it’s really enjoyable.”

Mannerly Messing

Even when Ed tries to be bad-ass he feels too guilty to really follow it through properly. Last year after a Grammy party, Sheeran and his friends trashed a hotel room. The next morning, he felt so bad that someone else would have to clean it up that he “literally de-trashed my room and put it back to normal.” He said that he was all too aware that if he misbehaves or insults someone that it could result in a negative news story or loss of record sales. He said, “It’s the time of being polite.” It’s a pity many other stars don’t share this professional view, Justin Bieber for one, although he did this year make a public apology for his “arrogant” behaviour, so maybe the niceness and politeness is spreading after all… But is Ed really a nice guy or just playing nice to ensure he still has fans? It’s hard to know, but surely no one

could put up a pretence for so long without showing their true colours eventually? Could it be that he and his famous friend singer Taylor Swift are starting a ‘nice’ revolution amongst their peers? Taylor is also renowned for her generous efforts to add a little sparkle to her fans’ lives, from inviting them over for a first-listen of her new album, to turning up at their weddings to wish them well. Ed played 66 shows as Taylor’s support act for her Red Tour last year and the two are confirmed friends, with Taylor saying he has the “sense of humour of an eight year old.” However, she also called him “one of my very best friends” and raves about his talents as a solo artist. There is more evidence to suggest that Ed really is genuine and humble, possibly as a result of never being a ‘cool’ kid, who suffered from stuttering for many years. He knows what it is like to be awkward and different, and a compassion surely comes from that. In June he attended the American Institute for Stuttering’s Freeing Voices Changing

Lives Benefit Gala and spoke about how “many of the people that are successful started life off as a weird kid with no friends.” In his speech, Ed told of his childhood, where he had a port-wine stain birthmark on his face and called himself a “very, very weird child.” He said that when doctors were trying to laser off his birthmark, they forgot to put anaesthetic on it and as a result he ended up with a stutter. Add to that he wore big NHS glasses and had a perforated ear drum, and you can begin to see where Ed gained his empathy and compassion from. He said, “It was still quite a difficult thing. The thing I found most difficult was knowing what to say but not really being able to express it the right way.” He tried speech therapy and homeopathy, but eventually found his own cure in learning to rap Eminem songs aged nine. “Stuttering is not a thing you have to be worried about at all,” he said. “Even if you have quirks and weirdness, you shouldn’t be worried about that.“

In fact Ed doesn’t consider himself to be attractive even now and isn’t concerned at all about subscribing to society’s obsession with looks. He had to be coerced into wearing something other than a hoody and jeans for this year’s Grammy’s and often wears whatever he feels comfortable in instead of the latest trends. Although Ed does still have a sense of humour about being voted second in the UK’s 2014 Top Ten Weirdest Crushes compiled by Heat magazine. He said, “I don’t see myself as a sex symbol, but if other people do, I’m not going to complain.” He has often talked instead about being a redhead which caused some bullying in school and told The Daily Mail, “Being ginger can seem like a bad thing when you are young but as a musician it has been my saving grace – because if you see a ginger kid on TV and there is only one messyhaired ginger kid who plays guitar, it is very easy to find them on YouTube.” Interestingly Ed has been invited to the

july 2015 //

// 21

ED SHEERAN annual Redhead Convention in Cork this year, but has yet to confirm his attendance, although you never know with his track record of fan surprises! Ed’s niceness also comes from his down-to-earth attitude. Despite being a grammy-nominated singer and having his studio albums certified platinum multiple times, he gives himself an allowance. He’s been reported to be worth around £7million, yet he claims to only give himself around £1,000 to spend per month. He told the Irish Examiner last July that he doesn’t spend that much money: “Rich? I get an allowance, I really don’t spend much. [I use] my Barclays student account. I’ve not upgraded because I don’t spend much money. If I had all my money in one account I would spend all of it, so I get an allowance.” His biggest extravagance he confesses is buying “around 200 DVDs on Amazon”, which is hardly in the realms of excessive spending. That’s modest for any 24 year-old, let alone a superstar.

Real Romantic

Ed also appears to be quite the romantic (not just because of his love songs), and this June helped a guy propose to his girlfriend at a concert in Canada. The fan, Pablo Benitez wanted to propose to his girlfriend Tanya Procyshyn at Ed’s show, a day before she was due to have surgery for a brain tumour. Unfortunately the show was sold out, but Pablo managed to talk to

Being ginger can seem like a bad thing when you are young but as a musician it has been my saving grace 22 // #intallaght / TWEET US

Ed at a private event beforehand, and Ed sorted them out with front-row tickets. Ed even stopped the show to congratulate the couple in the middle of his song Thinking Out Loud by saying, “I’m just going to stop here for two seconds. A couple in the front row just got engaged. Congratulations!” Ed is also reported to have set up his friend Johnny McDaid (Snow Patrol’s keyboardist) with Courtney Cox, who are now engaged. He says that he introduced them, but that it was comedian Sacha Baron Cohen that played cupid between them, taking no credit for the couple getting together. McDaid shared a house with Ed for a year and assisted on his album, and said about him, “He’s not a prima donna who believes he’s at the centre of the universe.” Ed comes from a humble background and maybe remembering his beginnings, where he slept on couches even when starting to record his first studio album, is what keeps him that way. Even in the past year Ed has spoken about how he takes offers of a free bed from celebrity friends, saying that Courtney Cox invited him to stay in her pool house after a late night party, and then he ended up staying for a few months. He told The Sun newspaper, “There was no rent but I made the bed and cups of tea and things like that. If you’re staying at your friend’s house, you should treat it like your own….Well, actually, that’s a lie - because I don’t make my own bed at home.” with manners like that, who wouldn’t want Ed as a house guest? From a sensitive acoustic artist who became famous in the traditional way

by playing his way around the country, as opposed to gaining instant fame from some TV show like X Factor, Ed has evolved into a Justin-Timberlakeinspired singer, with R&B influences. He has written and co-written songs for One Direction and Taylor Swift as well as collaborating with Pharrell Williams on the very danceable song Sing from his latest album +. And yet he also keeps to his roots with beautiful romantic ballads like Thinking Out Loud. Essentially Ed is growing as an artist, but keeps true to himself and knows what he does best, and that is telling the truth through his music (and treating people well). Above all, Ed makes a brave statement as a performer, still filling out venues with just himself and a guitar on stage, with no backing band, dancers, or flashing light shows. He told Billboard Magazine that “Having a band as a singer-songwriter is a pretty standard thing, and I would lose my unique selling point once I’ve done that.” In fact in a world where musicians’ rider lists (things they want in their dressing room) include baskets of puppies and red toilet roll, Ed has said that he’s happy once there is a box of tea bags there. If that’s not a nice well-mannered lad, what is? With Ed’s upcoming gig in Croke Park, no doubt there’ll be even more stories of him being sweet or generous to people. Now if we could only figure out where he is staying…

GLENDA GILSON

The Glory of glenda Rachel Lynch spoke to one of Ireland’s most stylish TV presenters, Glenda Gilson about married life and why Xposé isn’t always as glamourous as it seems. by RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

Glenda Gilson is one of Ireland’s most stylish presenters and has been on our screens for a number of years. Aside from her

successes modelling, she began her presenting career back in 2007 with Bubble Hits and since then has gone on to become one of the main anchors of TV3’s Xposé. Glenda told InTallaght how tough it can be being on the road all the time and how the job isn’t as glamorous as some people would assume, although she does have a great time with the team, with another bonus of meeting new people every day. In May she hosted a special Marriage Referendum results show alongside Vincent Brown which was aired from The George Nightclub. The special guests included names like Senator David Norris, former Justice Minister Alan Shatter, Senator Katherine Zappone and none other than Bosco. Glenda said the whole experience was fantastic, “I was so happy I did it, it was a nerve-wracking one because it sort of took me out of my comfort zone.” She also praised Vincent who she loved working

It was going to be fun and we were all very positive about it and thankfully it was passed and I was there to enjoy the day, a day that will go down in history–we had a ball.” Glenda explains how the two different personalities worked well together on the day. “There is something about myself and Vincent that works but yet we’re the complete opposite.” She was delighted to see the Yes campaign come out on top but says she was surprised by the amount of no votes also. She says, “You know what, it’s done we got it so I’m afraid to even talk about it now, don’t let it be undone!” When we initially contacted Glenda she was in London on the red carpet for Spy, which is the new comedy movie with Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law and Jason Statham. She says, “It’s absolutely brilliant, so I went over to see them and that will air over the next few days. I had a sit-down interview with them and then I met them on the red carpet, so that was a long day in

London.” Glenda explains to us how her life is pretty much non-stop with Xposé. She travels from event to event but tells us it’s not as glamorous as some would believe, despite it looking so on TV. While we find it hard to believe that Glenda could be anything but well turned out, she assures us that it’s not always the case. She says, “If you looked at me now you wouldn’t think it was so amazing, the eyes are hanging out of my head and I am still wrecked after last week, I have worked straight through since then and also did the Mini Marathon so I’m wrecked.”

GLENDA GILSON Red Carpet Reality

In terms of glamour the red carpet is where we all think Glenda resides most weeks but she explains that plenty of work goes on behind the scenes before the after-parties. “It’s not glamorous at all but some days you do get good gigs. Like we aren’t just turning up looking fab, you have got all the research in your head and know your stuff. Every time we go away on a trip we come back wrecked.” Some of the added perks to the job are the beautiful places Glenda has travelled to over the years and she tells us about her trips away with former X Factor judge Louis Walsh as some of the best. “Louis brought me to a few places, when he was doing judges homes I got to go to Saint-Tropez and hang out in a big mansion with him.” Another was New York Fashion Week, which Glenda says was “amazing although it was -16 Degrees over there at the time but it was still fabulous and I just enjoyed every bit of it. Paris Fashion week again was another great one, these great trips come up now and again and you’re lucky to get them because there are so many of us [in Xposé] that they have to be shared out.” From what Glenda has told us, working on Xposé is the kind of job that sees you wake up each morning and not know where you could be jetting off to that day, which to most of us seems like the dream job, but having to research everything yourself is not as easy as some would imagine.

You watch a character on TV or in a movie and think that that’s the way they are in person, which they aren’t 26 // #intallaght / TWEET US

As part of travelling all over the world for the show, Glenda has had the pleasure of meeting some huge names and in a recent interview spoke about how sometimes meeting these names can leave you a bit disappointed. “You watch a character on TV or in a movie and think that that’s the way they are in person, which they aren’t. Thank god for the internet as you can find an interview they have done and read about the person and find out what way they are and who they are.”

Interview Insights

Glenda tells how many times she has walked in to interview a celebrity with a “happy-go-lucky” attitude but that just doesn’t work with some people. She says, “It’s like anything, it’s like meeting a person on the street you can have a laugh with them after only meeting them for two seconds into your life, meeting them then and there and have a great chat and get on with them and then you say ‘Jesus that was a lovely person’ and that’s the way it is, the same as what we do in everyday life. Obviously if I get a good personality to interview then I suppose it’s probably more entertaining and it goes better, it certainly flows better because the two of you are getting on so well.” In terms of interviews that really went down well Glenda tells us that she has had plenty of interesting characters over the years. “I’ve had so many now but George Clooney was fab and I was so happy because I thought he was gorgeous all my life and then when I met him I thought he was fabulous. Then you have your Dustin Hoffman, your Al Pacino and Michael Douglas– they are all fantastic and they know the game. They are promoting a movie and know you’re doing a job so understand that you’ve to work together.” Glenda speaks about an interview she had with Robbie Williams that stands out to her for a number of reasons. She had always thought he would be a bit of craic and a genuinely nice guy and on this occasion he didn’t disappoint. “I did a full interview with Robbie Williams and 15 minutes into

the interview the cameraman says ‘I’m really sorry but I never pressed record’ and I only had 10 minutes left and Robbie said ‘It doesn’t matter, let’s do it again and I’ll pretend to do the whole ‘hiya howsa going’, and you know how fake and staged that could be but it worked and he was willing to play ball which helped me because if he didn’t they would have kicked me out after 10 minutes!” Despite having met with plenty of stars over the years both here and abroad Glenda says there are still a few on her wish list to meet including her

ultimate favourite actor Jack Nicolson. “I would do anything to interview him, I remember meeting an actor that had worked with him a couple of years ago and he just said he was one of the best guys he had ever worked with, from his personality to everything about him was just great fun. I would love to meet him and hear his stories.”

Career Path

Looking back over her career to date Glenda reflects on where it all began, saying that presenting was always something she wanted to do. “I left

GLENDA GILSON school, I went to Ballyfermot College and did Print Journalism and TV and Radio Broadcasting and then I suppose I was doing modelling and that was the place to stay if I wanted to get into it. Eventually I got the opportunity to go on Bubble Hits, which was a music channel and then I got the chance to cover Sybil Mulcahy’s maternity leave for five months and here I am eight years later.” Glenda says she loves everything she has been involved in with her career to date and finds it hard to believe it was all the way back in 2006 when she embarked on her presenting career. During that year she fast became the face of Bubble Hits hosting the news and entertainment show Glenda’s Showbiz Gossip. From there she went on to find a new home in 2008 by joining TV3’s Xposé team due to her insight and fashion knowledge on a part-time basis before becoming permanent in 2009. While discussing what she has achieved I also asked was there anything she would have liked to do or still do but she says if she is to explore any new ventures that there is still plenty of time. “In TV you need the experience, you need a good few years to find your feet because you doubt yourself and you find yourself saying you’re not that good or that wasn’t a great interview and you’re on TV so you are constantly judging yourself or you’re reading other comments from people judging you.” Her advice to students who have just finished up college for the summer and are hoping to venture into the same career path as hers is not to give up. “There are so many opportunities out there. If and when people will invite you into their workplace to work for free or for a week’s experience take it and grab it with two hands and make sure you do a good job. I’ve seen interns and transition year students come in here on work experience and some of them just come in and sit in the corner and take it as a week off and others keep running around and doing everything and they are so enthusiastic and it’s usually the ones who are

If and when people will invite you into their workplace to work for free or for a week’s experience take it and grab it with two hands and make sure you do a good job

enthusiastic that end up getting the job in here.”

Marital Bliss

Glenda discusses the year so far and finds it hard to believe it’s been almost a year since her wedding to Rob MacNaughton and laughs at how she’s happy the whole wedding process is finally over, even though she doesn’t believe she was a complete Bridezilla. “There were arguments and stress and everything like that but it was great. You kind of have to look at it as what will be will be and just get on with it and that’s what we did and we had a great day to be honest. I’m glad it’s over because it’s serious planning and it’s serious work when you are trying to do this job as well.” Although the wedding planning was a challenge Glenda surprisingly had an easy choice when it came to the dress. “The one I chose was the

first dress I tried on, I wanted it, then I ordered it and then I went and tried on other dresses. What am I like, I did it backwards!” Glenda has had such a hectic year from weddings to starstudded events that she now says how she would just love a holiday to wind down but finds her daily intake of reality TV show Big Brother is keeping her entertained right now. “We are flat out with the show at the minute, we have an hour so we have a lot of content to fill and then of course Big Brother is keeping me very busy these days watching that, I’m enjoying that as well so for now I’m just working on the show.” With a clearly strong work ethic and her down-to-earth approach to interviewing, we have no doubt that Glenda will continue to be a popular presenter in Ireland for years to come. Xposé broadcasts weekday evenings at 6pm on TV3, with a repeat the following day at 1pm on 3e.

St Kevin’s Boys School in Kilnamanagh would like to say a massive thank you to all the local businesses who helped them in their quest to win 30 brand new iPads from Ireland’s RSA.

Forth class teacher Emer Maher told us of her delight at win, “We are absolutely delighted and want to thank all the local businesses for their great coverage and especially The Square because I know a lot of families will shop there and without them I don’t think we would have got all the votes that we needed. It’s great for the local school we have no iPads of yet so the kids are absolutely chuffed to get a whole set.”

The competition, driven through social media, saw pupils at the school participate in a video which then was viewed by many of you online.

FUN IN THE SUN Lucky for us Summer is the very time of year where we can completely mix match our clothes and get away with it!

Since we’re talking practicality and style combined, key accessories that will spruce up any outfit include funky shades, straw hats and snapbacks. Something that’s equally as popular for both guys and girls are acid wash jeans and shirts, or my all time fave, denim on denim. Hawaiian and floral prints will always work, once they’re not over done and are paired with some neutral tones.

Everybody’s main goal is to stay cool and comfortable, but managing to look stylish while doing so is an extra bonus! Summer style is all about relaxed feels, bright colours and loose flowy shapes, and believe it or not, recycling! More often than not people keep the same summer wardrobe for years, and each year gradually add accessories or statement pieces to expand their wardrobes.

In saying that, don’t be afraid to go bold, that includes guys too! I’m not just talking in outfit and trend choice but more so, how the clothes look on you! There is nothing worse that an unflattering piece of clothing, and you won’t feel great in it either. Summer is the perfect time to wear long loose airy pieces. You’ll be getting the best of both worlds. Feeling comfy yet rocking that laid back boho chic look too.

In search of these statement pieces?? Why not try Vera Moda and Jack Jones for these must have items, that will no doubt keep you looking fit and fresh while the sun shines down! For the gals, the must have for the Summer is a white dress which is both stylish and practical! It’s light in weight and reflects the sun, but can be so stylish when paired with the right bold accessories. Don’t forget, white shoes have now made their comeback. If you’re not feeling the all white look add a dash of black. You’ll be looking both elegant and trendy in a monochrome outfit.

All these tips mentioned are perfect for festivals and concerts as well. Be confident enough to make bright and bold moves. It can be easier for girls, since they have makeup and hair to mess around with, but guys, don’t be afraid to get onboard and give it a go. Like I said before, summer is all about being relaxed and having fun. There are endless possibilities of shoes and accessories, so don’t be shy and make us girls proud! Happy shopping...

MOVIE

TERMINATOR Genisys

by GENNA PATTERSON

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

An unexpectedly amusing reboot of the Terminator franchise. Terminator Genisys is not what hardcore Terminator fans will be expecting at all. If, like a hardcore Terminator fan, you do not include the sequels after Terminator 2 to be part of the series, this film may cause mixed responses. Although this is not necessarily a bad thing because it is actually really funny and nowhere near as dark as the second instalment, where Sarah Connor is tortured by a future yet to come. It has become a new story altogether, while paying heavy homage to its creator James Cameron and the first Terminator movie. While some will wonder if the movie has become commercialised to gain a more general rather than cult following than it has had to date, this reboot will no doubt entice new fans, which isn’t bad for the producers and actors, but some would argue it is bad for the original premise. Terminator Genisys seems set on messing with the minds of its viewers when it comes to timelines, as nothing is as it seems anymore. This time the story sees Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) return to 1984 to save Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) from a Terminator, but that is where most similarities end. In this movie, Sarah Connor is not the “weak and scared” woman her son John (Jason Clarke) thought she would be, and was when she first encountered the original Terminator. Instead, Kyle is met,

44 // #intallaght / TWEET US

and rescued by a feisty, weapon-bearing Sarah, who has essentially been waiting ten years to meet him. Not to spoil the fun, but an older Arnie (Schwarzenegger) features throughout the movie and is fondly nicknamed Pops. He provides the aforementioned comedy, which otherwise would be rather dark. However, it is full of many wonderful action scenes and stunts and has plenty of catchphrases both reused and newly forged. Many scenes from the first movie are revised, but with a twist and should be enough to keep cult fans happy. If you are looking for a fun, actionfilled yet totally refreshed Terminator film, then you won’t be disappointed, but if you want the old, tragic franchise this is far from that.

SONG OF THE SEA by RACHEL LYNCH

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

__________________________ Irish animator Tomm Moore follows his celebrated feature debut, The Secret of Kells, with another fantastic fantasy based on Irish folklore. A widowed lighthouse keeper is raising his two young children Ben and Saoirse by the sea. Their mother passed away after the birth of Saoirse and because of this Ben has always resented the young girl who has never spoken. When Saoirse takes hold of the horn shell their mother left behind she’s adopted by a pod of seals as a selkie (half person, half seal). It’s from here the story really takes us off on a magical adventure. Like Kells this film is steeped in Celtic imagery, which really is beautiful, the flattened backgrounds and splashes of color really do capture the imagination. With the voices of Brendan Gleeson and Fionnula Flanagan this all-star Irish cast doesn’t disappoint.

It’s one the whole family will enjoy with the storyline focusing on entertaining not just the children but the adults too. So far Song of The Sea has received top reviews all over the world, including a nomination for the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar and it’s obvious why. When it hits Irish screens this month I’m sure it will have the same effect on the home audience.

The ultimate chick flick with enough halfnaked men to keep your attention for at least the first hour.

A hilarious prequel to Despicable Me.

It’s now been three years since Mike Lane’s (Channing Tatum) retirement from stripping. Since then he has continued to build his business and has a new love interest but the former exotic dancer misses the excitement and feeling of being on stage. Most of all, though, he misses his best friends and when the crew contact him lying about a death, Mike turns up to a mock wake only to find out that everyone is very much alive and want him to travel alongside them to Myrtle Beach for a stripper convention. With the promise of outrageous fun, a reinvig-

orated Mike can’t resist the chance to jump on stage and take it all off again. Overall the film is quite entertaining and it’s exactly what you would expect, however there were a number of moments mid-film that lacked any form of storyline and as soon as the men put back on their clothes there really wasn’t much else going on.

The long-awaited Minions is out now and well worth a watch. Before the cute yellow minions met their evil master Gru, they searched the earth for the perfect creature to serve. Their search, which doesn’t go quite to plan includes adopting a T.Rex, a caveman, an Egyptian Pharaoh, a medieval king and many more famous ‘despicable’ masters over the years. Eventually after none of these masters work out they move to Antarctica to isolate themselves from the world. However, the minions soon find themselves depressed and without purpose, so one minion, Kevin, decides to go in search of a new master for his people. Two other minions, Stuart and Bob, offer to join him and they

find themselves in New York at a convention for henchmen. There they attempt to become the henchmen of Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), and that’s when the real fun begins. Minions is a fun-packed, laugh-out-loud movie, which definitely lives up to its predecessor Despicable Me. Given that the minions were the highlight of that movie, it seems only right that they be given their own feature-length outing, although at times it seems that the humour in Despicable Me came from them messing away in the background of another story. Young audiences will enjoy the physical comedy moments, while parents will be kept happy enough with the many pop-culture references.

YOU’RE UGLY TOO by genna patterson

___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

A poignant Irish film about loss and trying to make amends.

You’re Ugly Too is an Irish-made movie starring Aidan Gillen (Little Finger in Game of Thrones) as Will, the estranged uncle to Stacey (Lauren Kinsella). When Stacey’s mum dies, Will is released from prison to care for her. The two move to a mobile home park in the remote midlands in an effort to make a new life for themselves, but find it difficult to bond. The relationship develops amidst these difficulties, with Will keeping the reason why he went to prison to himself, and secretly stealing Stacey’s medication. Stacey can’t attend school due to her illness and so gets tutored at home by neighbour Emilie, a woman Will starts to fall

for despite working for her husband Tibor. You’re Ugly Too is at times sweet and certainly tries very hard to be meaningful. However, often the story drags and the dialogue feels a little too contrived. It aims high, and unfortunately only meets itself half way a lot of the time. Both actors try very hard to convince the audience, but at the end it feels like the movie was edited to make up for the longer scenes at the start, just to get to the point all of a sudden at the end and it doesn’t seem to add up properly. Despite all that, You’re Ugly Too is of high production value, and makes Ireland look lovely with many shots of aesthetically pleasing landscapes. If you are looking for a home-made movie about difficult family relationships, this one is for you. If you’re looking for an action movie, go see something else.

TAYLOR SWIFT’S Album “1989” Returns to #1 by padraig conlon ____________________________ Following her two sold out shows at the 3Arena last week Taylor Swift has stormed back to #1 on the official Irish Album chart with her most recent

offering 1989. The album, which was produced by Swift and Max Martin, debuted at #1 on the Irish album charts on its release in October last year. It has since achieved 4 x Platinum sales in Ireland and spawned four hit singles to date including Shake It Off, Blank Space, Style and the most recent single Bad Blood. She showed the world exactly how powerful she is at the end of last month when she wrote an open letter to Apple CEO, Tim Cook, complaining about the company’s decision not to pay artists during the three month freetrial period of Apple Music. She used 1989 as her bargaining chip in her negotiations as she announced it would not be available on Apple Music. This sent Apple into such a tailspin that the very next day they said they would pay royalties during the free trial period. “We hear you @taylorswift13 and indie artists. Love, Apple,” they tweeted.

MUSIC

We’ve stripped away the electronic overtones of the A-Z series

ASH Kablammo

by padraig conlon @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

____________________________ Northern Irish rockers Ash have seen it all, done it all and got sick on the tee shirt. Since their formation in 1992 the band have enjoyed glorious commercial success, near-bankruptcy, drug meltdowns and more comebacks than Elvis himself. I remember hearing their debut single Oh Yeah exactly 19 years ago this month and thinking that it sounded too good to be made by three wee’uns from Downpatrick. When I eventually heard the album from which that single had come, 1977, I knew they weren’t going to be one-hit-wonders. Their ability to craft beautiful pop punk classics like Kung Fu, Girl From Mars, Angel Interceptor, and Burn Baby Burn propelled them to greatness and for a while it looked like they might conquer the planet. World domination never happened and they faded into the background for a few years playing in mad obscure places like Cambourne in Cornwall, where I saw them in 2001.

50 // #intallaght / TWEET US

Back in 2007 they announced they wouldn’t be releasing any more albums and instead came back in 2009 with The A-Z Series which saw them release 26 singles, one every two weeks, for a year. It was a very innovative plan and kudos to them for doing it but the general feeling among fans was that while there were some excellent songs in the collection they became rarer and rarer as the series evolved. To be honest, when I first heard that they were releasing a new album this year I expected it to be a complete turkey. I was very wrong! I was delighted to discover, on my first listen of Kablammo! that Ash have created another excellent album that has all the swagger, spirit and style of the teenagers who created 1977 almost two decades ago. The record is rammed with guitar riffs and drumming that sounds like it was made by load of pissed-up teenagers in a garage. Prior to its release Tim Wheeler explained what exactly the band are trying to achieve with this album. “We set out to capture the live essence of Ash, the closest sonic predecessor would be 2004’s Meltdown, with the songwriting of the Free All Angels singles,” he said. “We’ve stripped away the electronic overtones of the A-Z series and made a streamlined blazing guitar record.”

First tune Cocoon almost grabs you by the ears and sticks your head up against an amp as Tim Wheeler sings about a “dream of taking flight” before the chorus of “COCO-OO-OON” is delivered in a high-pitched falsetto. Let’s Ride, Machinery and Go! Fight! Win! carry on in much the same vein, all high energy, fast-paced rock n’ roll with life affirming messages like “Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done!” Moondust calms the whole thing down a bit as Wheeler asks, over haunting strings and sad piano, “Won’t you come home safe. Will you bring me back some moondust?” It’s a lovely ballad and wouldn’t have sounded out of place on any of the bands early albums. Dispatch is one of the few tracks on Kablammo! where the band doesn’t sound like their old selves. It’s a great tune with a solo in the middle that sounds pure Iron Maiden and works really well. The album does run out of legs a little bit near the end and I didn’t enjoy the last three tunes Shutdown, For Eternity, and Bring Back The Sun, as much as I did the previous nine. They’re not bad songs, they’re just sort of insignificant, but I don’t want to finish on a downer. Kablammo! is a brilliant album and proof positive that Ash are still a great band. I’m delighted to see them make such a triumphant return and hope it won’t be another eight years till their next album.

Hozier Someone New by padraig conlon

___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

Wicklow singersongwriter Hozier continues to blaze a trail and his latest single Someone New just reinforces how good he really is.

In the two years since the release of the majestic Take Me To Church he has topped the charts all over the world, been nominated for a Grammy and earned plaudits from some of the most respected musicians of our age. Someone New opens with a blues bass line which develops into a beautiful guitar riff before Hozier starts singing in, what is now, his unmistakable deep baritone voice.

The song builds up into a very catchy, uplifting chorus and the lyrics, “I fall in love just a little, oh a little bit every day with someone new” are quite infectious. As with most of his songs so far, Someone New deals with relationships and here he seems to be saying what you initially like about someone will fade eventually so you might as well fall in love with everyone as that’s the only way to be happy! Or as he puts it, “Love with every stranger, the stranger the better.” He’s making the point that not everyone believes in the happy ever after and it’s alright to not want to feel tied down. It is almost an anti-love song. Not only is he a fine musician, his lyrics are almost poetic, he has everything going for him and I hope his success continues for many years to come.

TECH

Apple music by COLM O’MUIRÍ

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

Apple Music streaming service launched recently despite the controversy with Taylor Swift, however fans of the singer need not worry as it is still the only place where you can stream her album 1989, or else you have to buy it.

Controversy seems to follow Taylor Swift around however as this is about Apple Music let’s stick to that. For those of you hoping for a free version you will be upset to know that there is no free version. Apple however are giving you a free three-month trial after which you will have to pay for the service which is €9.99 a month. Apple are also offering a family plan for their Apple Music service where up to six accounts can have access to the service for €14.99 a month. That’s pretty cheap and could be one of the major aspects of beating away the stiff competition that Spotify offers. One of the aspects of Apple Music which sets it apart from Spotify is that one of the major strategies that they are employing is that Apple will be the place for exclusives. We have already seen that with Taylor Swift’s 1989, but

52 // #intallaght / TWEET US

it is also the only place to hear Pharrell Williams’s new song Freedom. Playlists are a big feature of music streaming services and Apple have seen and acknowledged that. Apple Music editors along with writers from Rolling Stone magazine, Q and Mojo to name but a few will be putting together their own playlists for users to enjoy. Apple Music will also give users “suggestions from our experts who know and love music”, how precise that will be is yet to be seen. Good or bad however it could turn out to be useful or just an extremely funny service. Another feature that could be useful or a nuisance depending or your relationship with Siri is that users can

apple CEO tim cook during apple music keynote

preview of apple music across all their devices

the only place to hear Pharrell Williams’s new song ‘Freedom’ tell Siri to add an album to their library. Apple Music comes with plenty of features, one of which allows artists to share comments, pictures and videos etc. to Apple Music. This could be a really good feature if videos or songs from concerts are posted to the app as everyone loves a live album. Another gimmick of Apple Music is that it will have its own global radio station called Beats 1. The station will broadcast from Los Angeles, New York and London with presenters such as Zane Lowe and shows from the likes of Dr Dre, Drake and Elton John. Those of you unwilling to pay for Apple Music will be pleased to know that Beats 1 will be available without having to subscribe to Apple Music. With three months free to try out the service we won’t know how Apple Music is doing for at least four months time. However the fact that it has ‘Apple’ somewhere in its name I am confident in saying that this service will go from strength to strength and compete with Spotify in no time.

GAME

EA SPORTS Rory McIlroy PGA Tour by Colm O’Muirí

___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

EA Sports are bringing the world of golf to life again and for the first time on next-gen consoles with the upcoming release of Rory McIlroy PGA Tour. Following on from the widely successful Tiger Woods PGA Tour games which ran from 1998 to 2014, EA Sports will be hoping for more success with current world number one Rory McIlroy’s endorsement of the franchise. The game looks great but let’s get the biggest disappointment out of the way, there is no Augusta National or Masters tournament in the game because the contract expired, however it is expected that they will be added at a later date as a download. One of the best features of Rory McIlroy PGA Tour which we haven’t seen previously is that the course is one big map and that there will be no load times going from hole one to two, etc. This also helps with the gameplay being more realistic as if you hit a bad shot onto another fairway the gameplay continues, instead of going out of bounds and dropping shots. Presentation and commentary is key to the sports game and Rory McIlroy PGA Tour will feature The Golf Channel’s presentation and Rich Lerner and Frank Nobilo will do the commentary, although personally I prefer Jim Nantz and David Feherty.

54 // #intallaght / TWEET US

The full roster of golfers has not been announced at the time of writing however Jordan Spieth, Keegan Bradley, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Rickie Fowler have all been announced with plenty more to come. As well as real world courses such as Chambers Bay and St Andrews the game will also have fantasy courses with one of the courses being based on a Battlefield map called Paracel Storm and another which is based in the Grand Canyon. Another new mode is Night Club Challenge and this is where you will have to make shots at targets in a nightclub inspired setting. Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is released on July 14th and is only available on next-gen consoles the PS4 and Xbox One. Golfing fans will know that this coincides with the 2015 Open Championship so it’s a good weekend for all golf fans. The game is €64.99 in Smyths which is €10 cheaper than both Gamestop and HMV/Xtravision.

The game looks great but let’s get the biggest disappointment out of the way

The game draws its inspiration from the Godzilla films of old GODZILLA

by Colm O’Muirí @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

__________________________ Developed and published by Bandai Namco, Godzilla is an upcoming video game for the next-gen consoles which allows you to take control of one of cinema’s most feared monsters, Godzilla.

Following a December 18th 2014 release of the game in Japan the game is finally getting a European release. Godzilla is both single player and multiplayer and it features many gameplay modes from Destruction Mode, King of the Monsters, Evolution, Diorama, Monster Field Guide and also an online Multiplayer Mode. Destruction Mode is the game’s story mode where players take control of Godzilla; PS4 gamers can choose any monster for this mode however PS3 can only use Godzilla, and they must complete the levels to progress. As you would expect from the title to progress you must destroy everything and to reach the game’s final ending you must score 100% on everything in this mode to do battle with Legendary Godzilla. In the King of the Monsters Mode you will be tasked with playing through six different stages, facing

off against a different monster in each level. In each stage the monsters increase in strength and difficulty with the most powerful monster appearing last and the easiest first. The monsters that feature in the PS3 version are the same as the PS4 however there are some PS4 exclusives such as SpaceGodzilla, Mecha-King Ghidorah, Rodan, Anguirus, Mechagodzilla 1974, Godzilla 1964 and Battra. The Online Multiplayer Mode is another PS4 exclusive where up to three players can do battle with various monsters to find out who is the most dominant. The game draws its inspiration from the Godzilla films of old and not the newer films which is sure to please Godzilla fans who still have nightmares of the 1998 reboot. The game is a PlayStation exclusive with it being released on July 17th on both the PS3 and the PS4. The PS4 version of the game is €64.99 in Smyths, €10 cheaper than Gamestop. The PS3 version is €49.99 in Smyths and €64.99 in Gamestop.

E3 2015 Electronics Entertainment Expo

At E3 we got another look at the upcoming release and it looks amazing

by Colm O’Muirí

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

___________________________ The 21st annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) took place recently between June 16th and 18th attracting 52,000 attendees to Los Angeles for the biggest video game trade show of the year.

XBOX CONFERENCE AT E3

As usual all of the major players of the video game world were showcasing some of their future games with trailers, shows and for the lucky people in attendance demos of the games. Both Sony and Microsoft had exhibitions as well as Nintendo, Electronic Arts (EA) and Ubisoft to name but a few. Microsoft scored a big winner when during their conference they announced that the Xbox One would finally become backwards compatible with games from the previous Xbox systems. Such was the joy of hearing this news that fans and journalists in attendance started stomping their feet in approval. Although this is seen as finally catching up with the PS4 system now that the hysteria has died down, one of Microsoft’s biggest coups for the next-gen consoles was getting Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusive to the Xbox. At E3 we got another look at the upcoming release and it looks amazing.

speilberg at e3

Being a PS4 owner and seeing how good this game looks and not being able to play it hurts. Microsoft also showed off Halo 5: Guardians, which is set for release in October. The gameplay looks great and the franchise continues to go from strength to strength. Microsoft also announced the Ultimate Edition of Gears of War which is sure to keep fans of the franchise happy until Gears of War 4 becomes available in 2016, if all goes to plan. Sony also showcased some great content during E3, one of the most popular being that they showcased a new demo for Unchartered 4: A Thief ’s End. This was well received by those in attendance however when I see Naughty Dog I just want to hear some Crash Bandicoot news. EA held an hour-long conference at the event in which they showcased some of their upcoming games and announced that they would be releasing another Mass Effect game

entitled Andromeda. They also showed gameplay of Star Wars Battlefront which looks amazing. The annual sports games also got a look in during the event with footage of FIFA 16 being shown along with footage of Madden NFL 16. Although Madden is not the most popular game in Ireland the graphics in that game every year are astounding. The sixth instalment of the Hitman franchise was unveiled at the event and during Square Enix’s press conference they showed off a gameplay trailer which shows exactly what the next-gen consoles are able to do.

HITMAN

E3 never fails to live up to expectations when it comes to reveals, trailers and getting to see gameplay footage of some of the most hotly anticipated games of the coming year, and this tradition continued in 2015.

MOTOR

TOYOTA GT86

by RACHEL LYNCH

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

____________________________ So you are looking to invest in a sports car but you don’t want one that you will be paying off for the next 20 years?

Then the Toyota GT86 is one you should certainly take a look at. Toyota really have taken a step outside the box with this model and it’s unlike anything in their range that we have ever seen before. So where do I start with this one? Well I suppose the rather eye-catching exterior would be a good place to begin. It’s a traditional looking sports car with styling similar to others in its class on the market, it includes a long bonnet and a short tail with a large front grille and twin exhausts. The GT86 is very similar to an Audi TT both inside and out with just the interior of the GT86 letting it down when compared to the Audi. That said it’s still pretty impressive with a built-in Sat Nav and all the mod cons you would expect with a sports car. There are plenty of seat and wheel adjustment upfront. What may surprise you is that there is a decent sized boot with this car although I don’t think when buying a sports car this would be on the top of your check list. Legroom in the back really isn’t ideal so long trips with a car

58 // #intallaght / TWEET US

full of passengers isn’t advisable. So what about the drive? Well you really can’t complain, the 2.0 liter engine is cheap enough to run with annual road tax coming in at €570 and it’s available in both manual and automatic. Pricing is pretty reasonable when compared to other sports cars on the market, the GT86 starts off at €41,085 and for that standard price you do seem to get a lot of extras included. Pros to this model have to be the competitive pricing, brilliant handling and accurate steering. The only con in my opinion is the cheap looking plastic interior but even at that it’s not something that many will have issue with. PROPERTY

buying a new house

by Colm O’Cochlain

___________________ With the economy picking up again, Colm O’Cochlain from O’Cochlain solicitors gives InTallaght readers some guidelines on how to go about buying a house, continued from our previous issue.

Once you have selected a property you will need to make a bid on it. There will be a guide price and you should consider something realistic but do not offer the full value. The market has slowed a little recently so don’t panic, take your time and have a maximum figure that you will not go beyond. If you are being asked to make another bid then go and see the property again and don’t rush into a higher bid. Once your bid is accepted you will be asked to pay a booking deposit to the selling Auctioneer which normally ranges from €5k to €10k and is refundable up to the point when contracts are exchanged. The Auctioneer will look for you to appoint a solicitor (that’s where we come in). When you are looking for a solicitor you need to consider the cost, their expertise and efficiency. The Auctioneer may be able to recommend

60 // #intallaght

someone or friends who have bought and sold may be of assistance. You can do some research on the internet. Generally a recommendation is best. Solicitors fees will vary and are subject to VAT at 23%. There are also a number of outlays. The Solicitor has to do Searches on the day that you close to make sure there are no additional mortgages or judgements against the property. We send these to search companies and they charge around €70.00. The Land Registry, where the owners details are kept, charge between €400 and €800 depending on the value of the property and a fee of €175 to register the mortgage. If your property is new they charge an extra fee of €75. There will also be minor fees for declarations. The key thing is to get a fully itemised quote in writing. If you need any further information or clarifications please contact me at colm@ocochlain.ie or at Colm O’Cochlain & Co at 01 459 0684.

IMPROVE YOUR HOUSE BEFORE VIEWINGS

by Antony McGee (REA)

___________________ @REA_MCGEE

REA’s Antony McGee gives us part two of the top cost-effective ‘R’s to improve your house before viewings.

Reupholster

New upholstery can completely update a seating arrangement. Always price the job completely first as sometimes it can cost more than a new sofa suite. Always shop around! A great couch is the centrepiece of your living room. Make it classic and make it comfortable. Your couch can be updated as home trends change. Reupholster an old headboard to give it an up-to-date look and watch your bedroom style change dramatically.

Replace

Adding new drawer pulls or handles to a tired bedside table or bureau can totally change the impression it makes. Replace the handles to kitchen presses for that updated look! Replace lampshades, this will give your lamp or light fitting an instant face lift. There are plenty of shops out

there selling great, trendy bedclothes at pocket-saving prices. Remember to keep busy patterns at bay, go for plain duvet sets and dress up your bedroom with accessories like cushions and throws, which again might already be lying around the house or stored away in a closet. Readymade curtains can also be purchased at very affordable prices and transform any room instantly. Charity shops and “euro saver” stores have some great deals, it’s all about keeping an eye out for the bargains and being smart with what you are spending your money on.

Retiling & Recarpeting

If it’s retiling and recarpeting that is needed to spruce up your home there are fantastic deals around nationwide at the moment and now is the time to hire tradesmen at cost-effective prices! But remember always price around for the best deals.

Redecorate & Revive

The most important lesson is that, just as our bodies and our minds are temples, so is our home. It is meant to be a place of tranquility, peace and serenity. Our home should be our retreat from the daily grind and pressures of life. However, before undergoing any redecorating transformation, you have to put your mind in a peaceful state first!

BOOK

AUTHER walter isaacson

STEVE JOBS by Mick Jordan ____________________________ With yet another movie about the legendary Steve Jobs on the way in October starring Michael Fassbender, we decided to take a look at the biography printed in 2011 that has inspired two movies four years after his death. There was a story going around Apple HQ that people would avoid getting in the lift with Steve Jobs. Get on at the first floor you could very easily be out of a job by the time you reached the fourth. That particular anecdote isn’t specifically mentioned in this biography but reading it you can well believe that it’s true. Steve Jobs was a ruthless, obsessed perfectionist – that’s not always a good thing, and in Jobs’s case it often wasn’t. He saw everything in the sharpest black and white, something was either ‘amazing’

62 // #intallaght / TWEET US

or it was – ‘rubbish’ (not usually his actual term.) There was no in between and he strived always to make every Apple product ‘insanely great.’ In order to achieve this he could be brutal to those around him and would use and abuse at will without the slightest concern. He was a deeply sensitive man who could get very emotional about his work and who could break down in tears if he felt under attack, yet he was completely insensitive to the needs of others and could tear people apart for the slightest (often imagined) fault. This was a man who often spoke of his feeling of having been abandoned by his birth parents yet who completely ignored his own first child from a casual relationship for many years. Isaacson doesn’t shy way from presenting this side of Steve Jobs but he does so with a certain admiration. It is the one real flaw in this biography – the author’s obvious high regard for his subject. It was written with Jobs’ full cooperation and with his full permission to write the full truth of his life – warts

and all. Isaacson certainly does that, his extensive interviews include many who have had very negative dealings with the great man and many who have been (very) badly treated indeed often even betrayed by him. But throughout this there is an undercurrent of justification – these things were done by the man who changed the world – in order that he could change the world. Readers might “think different”. Nevertheless it is fascinating to read about how Apple computers sank lower and lower into near obscurity once the shareholders forced Jobs out of the company he created. And how on his return he raised it up to be the biggest company in the world with, in quick succession, the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. This is all told with gushing awe as Steve Jobs pursues his inevitable destiny of greatness. Despite this rather obvious bias the book is an engrossing read. There’s no doubt the story of Steve Jobs’s rise and fall and rise and rise and rise again is a compelling one. And the real character of the man is certainly here - warts and all. Jobs was only fifty-six when he died but he certainly packed a lot into his short life. In turn Walter Isaacson has packed it all into quite a weighty volume. It is a very detailed account and the sheer size of it might be offputting at first, but this was a big man who made a big impact – he deserves a big book.

WRITERS CORNER

To Be Dead by Graham Connors ____________________________ Dressed in his rented black suit and finely polished shoes, Owen hesitates on the steps of Mackey’s funeral home. Sighing, he loosens

his tie. Not yet, he thinks, and steps back, re-reading the death notice in the window. Though it’s his mother’s name to Owen it doesn’t seem right or real; he isn’t ready to say goodbye. Turning away, Owen senses his feet know where his heart is afraid to take him as he soon finds himself outside a familiar set of huge rusting wrought iron gates. He hazards a smile - this is the park where as a child he fed ducks with this mother on Sunday afternoons. He hasn’t been here in years, long before she got sick and, fingering a fleck of chipped paint, Owen pauses before stepping inside. Making his way along the winding path, Owen finds a neat wooden bench facing the pond and wipes the seat with a discarded, crumbled up newspaper. He sits and closes his eyes against the low autumn sun allowing the sharp silence of the park wash over him. In the lonesome quiet, Owen finds himself thinking not of his mother and her Sunday picnics but of that old b*stard Albert Dunphy - commonly known to most people as God. Owen had a falling out with Albert a long time ago but not one of those playground spats that most Catholics have with him at some stage in life. This was a proper fight, an I-hate-you-withevery-fibre-of-my-being cataclysmic differing of opinions. You see, as Owen watched her slide he had hoped, once

recovery was no longer a possibility, his mother would pass away quietly, maybe in her sleep and with a bit of dignity - but Albert didn’t seem to agree. She lingered, slowly deteriorating to the point that she no longer bore any resemblance to the woman he’d known all his life and Owen concluded that Albert just didn’t care. She had a faith, she really believed, but if that mattered to Albert he would have done something. But he didn’t, either didn’t want to or didn’t have the power to, so this collection of contradictions known as God suddenly became quite ordinary and ordinary people have ordinary names, and Albert Dunphy struck him as being just about as ordinary as you can get. Owen feels his anger rising and stops himself. Taking a few deep breaths Owen lets it all out, sighing long and deep. Today is not a day to be angry he decides and with the wind making ripples on the surface of the pond Owen decides to push on back to Mackey’s. While he may not be any more ready than before, he finds now he can’t put it off any longer. Stepping forward he squats by the pond’s edge and smiles, remembering her and those sunny Sunday afternoons, torn chunks of stale bread and masses of squabbling green-headed mallards. The silence strikes him once again and Owen takes a moment to scan his surroundings he hasn’t seen a single person since he stepped inside nor heard anything but the rattle of dried leaves in the wind. A wry smile curls his lips – could this be a park for ghosts, for memories? he thinks, now viewing the park with curious eyes. He is alone and he watches the eerie nothingness keenly. Is this what death is like, some indolent

impression or a grey reproduction of a time when you were once happy? He feels the first stinging bud of tears. She was happy here. She loved it here. Owen smiles, “Goodbye Ma,” he whispers as he straightens and dries his eyes before stepping away.

UPC BUYS TV3 by padraig conlon ____________________________ There was some much welcomed good news for the Irish media industry at the start of this month when it was announced that UPC has agreed to buy TV3 for €80m, with a further €7m payable when specific targets are met. The deal should cement TV3’s financial future and will give UPC its’ own channel in Ireland. Liberty Global, the owners of UPC, are one of the planet’s largest international cable companies with a market share of $42bn and interests in 14 countries worldwide. Venture-capitalists Doughty Hanson bought TV3 for €265m in 2006. The plan was to increase the station’s profitability and sell it on within a few years but the recession interfered in the company’s objectives. “We’re pleased to welcome TV3 to the Liberty Global family,” said UPC Ireland chief executive Magnus Ternsjö.“The investment we are making today secures the long-term future of TV3. With its wide range of homegrown programming, TV3 holds a unique place in the heart of Irish viewers.” David McRedmond CEO of TV3 said he was “absolutely delighted” that the deal had been signed, describing it as “the final piece in the jigsaw” in its bid to claw its way out of a harsh media recession and guarantee its future. “Doughty Hanson have been really great investors and I cannot say enough good things about them. But they were private equity, so they were always going to leave,” he said. “It’s not about financial engineering, it’s about growth for the long-term.” TV3 has been further boosted by the strong commercial interest shown in the forthcoming Rugby World Cup, for which it has the exclusive rights in Ireland from mid-September, but revenues are still likely to be down for the year as a whole.

The 50 new jobs will be spread across a number of technology and administrative positions. “This is particularly good for Cherrywood a designated Strategic Development Zone. This area is of huge importance to the Dublin economy in terms of job creation and addressing the current shortage of office and housing space in Dublin. It will also have a positive knock on effect for the local community with local businesses benefitting from the newly employed people in the area.

Tallaght Stadium hosts UEFA Final by jACK MADDEN ________________________ On Saturday July 4th Tallaght Stadium played host to the UEFA Regions’ Cup Final where Ireland’s Eastern Region side won the amateur competition for the first time. A powerful David Lacey header was enough to ensure that the Eastern Region side were crowned the 2015 Regions’ Cup Champions following a hard fought 1-0 victory over Croatian side Zagereb Region. Both sides had come through the group stages with an impressive three wins from three and the final was a nail biting affair with all 1,172 supporters on the edge of their seats for much of the game. Local Athletes To Represent Ireland At Special Olympics by jack madden

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTJACK

The Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015 take place in Los Angeles and will see 7,000 athletes from 177 countries in attendance.

The games will run from July 25th to August 2nd and will be the largest sports and humanitarian event taking place anywhere in 2015 and the single biggest event in Los Angeles since the 1984 Olympic Games. The Special Olympics movement is committed to creating a world where every person, regardless of their ability or disability, is accepted, welcomed and valued – a world of inclusion and mutual respect, without bias or prejudice. This year Team Ireland is made up of 88 athletes from 23 counties who will be supported at the event by a 40 strong management team as they take part in the highest level sporting competition available to Special Olympic athletes. Team Ireland will compete in 12 sports: aquatics, athletics, badminton, basketball, bocce, bowling, equestrian, football (5 & 11-a-side), golf, gymnastics, kayaking and table tennis. Team Ireland will also be supported by 200 Irish volunteers who will volunteer

at the event, as well as hundreds of family members and supporters who will cheer the athletes on as they compete in Los Angeles. The Opening Ceremony, to be held on July 25th in the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, site of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, is expected to attract 80,000 spectators. Honorary Chairs of the Games are President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and California Governor Jerry Brown serving as Honorary Hosts. Speaking at Team Ireland’s launch, Matt English, Chief Executive, Special Olympics Ireland, said: “I am so proud of our athletes who will be representing their country and communities at the 2015 World Summer Games in Los Angeles. Each athlete has shown great motivation, discipline and tremendous skill in getting this far and it is worthy of real celebration. They are all winners and it is a truly remarkable achievement for all our athletes, their coaches, their families and Special Olympics volunteers. I know the entire country will be cheering on Team Ireland in July and August. Today is a result of hard work, commitment and dedication and I congratulate all 88 athletes.” Among the athletes in attendance will be five local sporting stars made up of Francis Bilardi, Gary McEnroe, Mark Duffy, Michelle Stynes and Sarah Byrne.

Michelle Stynes

Michelle Stynes (aged 36) from Tallaght has been chosen as part of the Irish Special Olympics Basketball team to take part at The Games. Michelle is also a competitive swimmer and says the highlight of her involvement with Special Olympics Ireland has been “making new friends and getting to know them.” Michelle has been playing basketball for four years now with her club, Palmerstown Wildcats Club and aside from basketball incorporates other forms of exercise such as swimming and walking into her routine. Michelle has two sisters and loves socialising with her friends and has a passion for animals which includes owning three pets: a dog called Lucy, a guinea pig called Rocky and a cat called Bubbles.

Francis Bilardi

Francis Bilardi (aged 28) from Tallaght has been selected as a football 11 athlete to represent Ireland at The Games. On hearing the news Francis proclaimed he was “over the moon” at being selected and he has previously competed on a global level remembering “My best memory is the World Championships in China.” Francis has been involved with Cheeverstown Special Olympics Club for 13 years now and has a wealth of experience behind him. In the run up to The Games he has been training hard twice a week and says in his spare time, “I like watching football when it’s on the television and I love the darts.”

Mark Duffy

Mark Duffy (aged 30) from Tallaght is another member of the 11-a-side football team travelling to the games and on being a Special Olympics Athlete said, “It means a huge amount – I’ve been an Athlete for 12 years and thanks to Special Olympics I’ve made loads of new friends and been able to travel. It was also a great honour to pull on the Irish jersey and represent my country at the 2007 World Games in China.” Mark is a member of Cheeverstown Special Olympics Football Club and also plays Basketball to help keep fit, and with a gold medal in his pocket from the China Games he will be hoping for a repeat performance this time around. He is passionate about all sports but his first love is soccer and he is an avid Manchester United fan and says Robbie Keane is his favourite footballer.

Sarah Byrne

Sarah Byrne (aged 17) from Clondalkin will represent Ireland at The Games as part of the basketball team and is no stranger to World Games success having won a silver medal at Athens in 2011. She considers this victory to be the highlight of her time with Special Olympics thus far, describing her overall experience as “a dream come true”. In preparation for the upcoming Los Angeles world games this summer, Sarah is currently working on her Basketball skills by training three times a week with Palmerstown Wildcats Club and in addition she also does Football, Athletics and Floorball in school. Sarah has plenty of hobbies and interests away from training and loves music, PS4 and an array of sports including basketball, The NBA and WNBA, soccer and GAA.

Gary McEnroe

Gary McEnroe (aged 20) from Kilnamangh has been selected as part of the Irish Special Olympics Aquatic team for this summer’s Games. Gary is also an established badminton athlete but will concentrate solely on aquatics and said on his selection, “It is great to be able to represent hometown, country and college.” Gary has already been hugely successful during his time with Special Olympics Ireland, winning two gold medals swimming at the 2014 Limerick National Games and is currently training hard at his local club St John of God Menni Services, Dublin. Gary lives with his mom, dad, sister and aunty and enjoys going on walks and watching television.

All here at InTallaght would like to wish our local athletes and all those involved in The Games the very best of luck as they set out for Los Angeles. For further information about Special Olympics Ireland please visit: www.specialolympics.ie

Galway United 1 Shamrock Rovers 2 by padraig conlon

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

The Hoops got the second half of the season off to a winning start at the end of last month with a deserved 2-1 victory away to Galway United.

Rovers started the game well and Tim Clancy probably should have given them an early lead when he volleyed Gary McCabe’s corner just over the bar. Brandon Miele was looking his usual exciting self and he finished a fine twenty yard run with a shot that went wide. The hosts were never going to lie down though and from their first corner of the game they would have scored but for the intervention of Gary McCabe who cleared the goal bound effort off the line. The Hoops eventually took the lead after 39 minutes when Luke Byrne arrived at the far post to find the back of the net with his head after Stephen McPhail’s free kick had been flicked on by Ryan Brennan. The second half was only 51 seconds old when half time substitute Enda

72 // #intallaght / TWEET US

Curran got on the end of a Gary Shanahan flick on to finish well with his left foot beyond Craig Hyland. The goal gave Galway an understandable lift and Shanahan missed a great chance to give the hosts the lead when he failed to make contact with a cross. Rovers stuck at it however and once again it was a Stephen McPhail set piece which proved Galway’s undoing as he directed his free kick towards the back post. David Webster got his head on the end of it to knock it down for Kieran Marty Waters who continued his fine form in front of goal to score and claim all three points for The Hoops. The closing moments were a bit nervy for the away support as Galway missed a couple of chances to draw level but Rovers hung on to deservedly win and keep the pressure on Dundalk and Cork.

Hoop Hoop Hurray Twitter reacts to the Hoops 3-0 win in the Europa Cup

Shamrock Rovers 3 Progres Niederkorn 0 by padraig conlon

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

It was a triumphant return to the European stage for The Hoops as they saw off the challenge of Progres Niderkorn in their Europa League First Qualifying Round Second Leg.

Following the 0-0 draw in the first leg in Luxembourg the week before the tie still hung very much in the balance. That game was played in stifling heat which probably made things a bit tougher for Rovers but the weather back home in Tallaght was in complete contrast. As the teams emerged from the tunnel they were greeted with wind and rain but in spite of the conditions the large home crowd were in fine form. It was the visitors who settled quickest though and they managed to ask some questions of The Hoops back four in the opening exchanges. Playing with the wind in the first half they came close to grabbing a vital away goal after 18 minutes when a free kick into the box was headed just wide by Rossini. This seemed to galvanize Rovers and three minutes later Waters played a lovely free kick into the Progres penalty area that the visitors failed to deal with. The ball dropped to Brandon Miele who failed to make a proper connection and his wayward shot turned into an assist which fell for David Webster. The centre half showed all the instincts

of a centre forward as he side footed the ball into the back of the net to settle the nerves. Progres didn’t let their heads drop however and created two chances in quick succession. Craig Hyland did well to keep out a free kick and a few minutes later another set piece created a chance for Progres but Cassan’s technique let him and down as he failed to hit the target. With five minutes to go to half time Simon Madden drilled a pass across the face of goal which the visiting keeper Flauss managed to spill. The ball dropped kindly for Marty Waters who ruthlessly punished the error to put Rovers 2-0 and in command of the tie. The Hoops couldn’t completely relax yet though and Progres started the second half well. Rovers were able to sit back more and they finally put their opponents to the sword on the 57th minute. Simon Madden went on one of his trademark runs beating two players and passing to Patrick Cregg who picked out Drennan. The Kilkenny man looked up to see Waters unmarked in acres of space on the left hand side of the penalty area. He unselfishly picked out the winger who scored his second of the night to kill off the Progres challenge and send Rovers into the next round. After being out of Europe for the last few seasons it’s great to see The Hoops back where they belong. There will be tougher challenges ahead for sure but this victory was much welcomed. Here’s hoping this is the start of another epic journey…

ROVERS 1945 CUP WIN by PADRAIG CONLON

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

Seventy years ago the record for the largest attendance ever at an FAI Cup final was set when 41,238 fans watched Rovers take on Bohs in Dalymount Park, a record that still stands to this day. Here Padraig Conlon looks back

at Rover’s epic defence of the FAI Cup in 1945. As war continued to rage around the world Rovers met Bohs in a league game at Milltown on New Year’s Eve 1944. The decade had been one of mixed fortunes for The Hoops. They had last won the league title in 1939 but had managed to lift the FAI Cup in 1940 and 1944. Their team contained quality players like the legendary Paddy Coad, Tommy Eglington, Podge Gregg and Bobby Rogers and heading into 1945 big things were expected of the side. As the curtain came down on ’44 Rovers beat Bohs 4-2 in a game that was contested in a “Cup tie spirit” according to The Irish Press. Rovers were unbeaten in the league and were pregame favourites to get the best of the amateur Bohs side. Two Bobby Rogers goals and one each from Maher and Dunne must have made it a great New Year’s Day for coach Bob Fullam and his Rovers players. The draw for the Quarter Finals of the FAI Cup had pitched holders Rovers against fellow top division rivals Limerick who would go on to pip The Hoops for second place in the league (on goal average) behind champions Cork United. Back then each round, apart from the final, was played over two legs and Rovers were drawn at home first. The match turned out to be a massive anti-climax for the Milltown faithful as Limerick raced into a 3-0 half time lead. In spite of the scoreline The Irish Independent noted that Rovers “had much more of the play than

74 // #intallaght / TWEET US

Limerick had in the second but their front line could make no impression on a sound Limerick rearguard.” A few switches at half time seemed to do the trick and Rovers pulled two goals back through skipper Paddy Coad. Despite massive pressure from Rovers the equaliser wouldn’t come and Limerick held on for what was their very first win at Milltown. Not many of the pressmen gave Rovers a chance of overturning the first leg deficit and they were going to have to do something very special to make it to the semis. However, The Hoops produced what some described as the “perfect away performance” to beat Limerick 3-1 in front of a (then) record crowd. The Irish Press report was glowing; “Shamrock Rovers, renowned Cup fighters and holders of the trophy, rose to the occasion yesterday at Limerick and revealing their traditional qualities triumphed over Limerick by three goals to one. Rovers, more virile and methodical outplayed the hosts for long periods…there was no weak

link in Rover’s workmanlike side.” Podge Gregg gave The Hoops the lead in the 12th minute before Paddy Coad missed a penalty fifteen minutes later. The skipper made amends however ten minutes into the second half when he scored a free kick from the edge of the area. Cregg neatly “zig-zagged” his way through for Rover’s third and in spite of Limerick’s late consolation goal Rovers had managed to turn it round and march on. Their opponents in the semi final would be struggling Dundalk who would go on to finish one place above the relegation zone. The first leg was played at Dalymount in front of what was described by The Sunday Independent 1st April 1945 as “one of the smallest crowds ever for a semi final fixture. The attendance was 7,065 and the takings were £350.” The atmosphere appeared to be lacking as well as the same paper said “There was not a single thrill throughout. The cup tie atmosphere rested on some keen tackling, cautions to a couple of

players and disagreements with a few of the referees decisions.” The lack of passion in the ground must have helped Dundalk as they unbelievably ran out 3-0 winners, and deservedly so according to all the papers. In the build up to the second leg, which was to take place a week later, The Irish Times 6th April 1945 asked “Can Rovers do it? This question was asked when they went to Limerick in the previous round and there was genuine surprise to find Rovers winning the tie. If Rovers can find the form they showed in Limerick they could still make a match of it.” The second leg also took place in Dalymount and this time Rovers would make no mistake. They thrashed Dundalk 5-0 to make it to their twelfth final in twenty four seasons. Three up after forty minutes through two goals from Coad and an own goal Rovers hammered home their advantage in the second half by adding two more as The Irish Press raved about them. Under the headline “Rovers Great Cup Spirit Carries Them Through To Final” the article stated “nothing seems impossible to Shamrock Rovers in an F.A. of Ireland Cup tie. Sheer grit and determination pulled them through. Undaunted by Dundalk’s lead they went all out from the very first kick off. Thrill succeeded thrill as they battled and it soon became obvious they had Dundalk whipped.” In the same paper a few days later the columnist “Socaro” said “Rover’s performance will rank as one of the greatest in their wonderful Cup history.” And so it was on to the final and a meeting with Bohemians who had overcome eventual champions Cork United in their semi final. The two sides had previously met in the 1929 final when The Hoops ended up lifting the cup after winning 3-0 in a replay after a drab 0-0 draw. It would be the tenth all Dublin FAI Cup final and most of the experts of the time tipped Rovers to win. The build up to the big day however was interrupted by some off field shananagans. The Irish Press 12th April 1945,

under the headline “Cup Final Crux”, explained how the final was in jeopardy due to a row between the two clubs. “To play or not to play? That is the question confronting Shamrock Rovers. They object to the charge of ten per cent of the receipts being made by Bohemians when Bohs are one of the finalists. At last nights meeting of the Council of The FA of Ireland they confirmed their previous decision not to play in the cup final at Dalymount Park.” Rovers were represented at the meeting by club secretary Capt. T Scully. Thankfully an agreement was reached six days before the final as The Irish Independent 17th April 1945 reported that “members of Shamrock Rovers’ Club will be admitted free to the F.A. of Ireland Cup final next Sunday. This unanimous decision by the F.A. Council threw oil on troubled waters and so satisfied the claim of Rovers who contended that their members were entitled to facilities similar to those accorded the Bohemian members.” The day before the game The Irish Independent did a small special feature on the final. The piece included interviews with the coaches from both sides. The man at the Bohs helm at the time was none other than Rover’s legend Jimmy Dunne. Both he and Hoops’ gaffer Bob Fullam were very confident their lads would prevail. “I have one FAI Cup medal gained with Shamrock Rovers,” said Dunne “and I’m fully aware of the tradition and the team spirit of the Rovers. In fact nobody knows it better. I can confidently say however that at the moment the team spirit at Dalymount Park is equal to that of Milltown in my playing days and that’s saying something.” Bob Fullam was likewise feeling very positive. “You can’t beat these colours, green and white,” he said. “Look at Glasgow Celtic, Belfast Celtic and ourselves and you’ll see they’re made for Cup winners. Sure even when Fordson’s beat us in the Cup they were wearing green and white.” The final took place on Sunday 22nd April 1945, the very day Adolf Hitler

admits defeat in his Berlin bunker and announces to those closest to him that he intends to commit suicide. It’s unlikely any of the record breaking crowd of 41,238 present in Dalymount that afternoon were aware of the momentous events taking place in the German capital. Many of them would have had first hand experience of the horrors of World War Two. After all the hype, drama and excitement of the build up to the final it appears the game itself was a bit of a let down. Under the headline “Rovers Wore Down Bohemians And Won Poor Cup Final”, The Irish Independent match report describes it as “one of the worst finals of recent years.” In the piece, written by someone called W.P.M, the writer said that pre match “all the ingredients of a great struggle were there for the crowd gave both sides plenty of vocal encouragement in the early stages. The preliminaries had been featured by a great show of Rovers’ colours and the presentation of horse shoes to the goalkeepers by dressed up mascots.” The only goal of the game came ten minutes into the second half and was described in a writing style very of it’s time! “Farrell running through in masterly fashion drew Gannon, slipped the ball to Rogers who quickly crossed it to catch Bohemians defence on the wrong foot. Delaney was unmarked when he got possession and should have scored himself but when tackled by Richardson he turned the ball into Gregg who shot it along the ground and it hit the upright on its way into the net. That was the end. For while Rover’s afterwards adopted defensive tactics they never looked like losing.” Paddy Coad lifted the Cup for The Hoops as the clubs supporters celebrated winning the country’s premier cup competition for the tenth time. They would go on to reach the final again the following year and by the close of the decade had firmly established themselves as Ireland’s most successful club.

july culture highlights ____________________________ Welcome to the Culture section of InTallaght magazine. Here you will find a guide to all things cultural, art and drama that is happening in the next few weeks in Tallaght’s Civic Theatre and RUA RED.

First up the Civic Theatre

From July 20th to 24th, Ballet Ireland’s 15th Annual Summer School participants will have an unforgettable time creating a ballet drawing on inspiration from The Frog Prince (Brothers Grimm) with professional dancers from Ballet Ireland. Each day begins with a class on stage with the dancers. Summer school participants become part of the creative process, helping to devise the choreography, create sets and more. The hugely popular summer school gives aspiring performers a taste of all that goes into making a ballet and a peek into the life of a professional dancer. Together with the dancers, the young performers play an important role in the creation of their own fulllength ballet which is performed on stage at the end of the week for family and friends to come and enjoy.

The programme is suitable for ages 6+ with or without dance training. Participants are divided into groups (6-8yrs, 9-11yrs and those aged 12 and over), with the seniors in the morning (11am-1pm) and juniors in the afternoon (2-4pm). The senior participants are needed all day on Thursday and Friday, while the juniors attend both the morning and afternoon session on the Friday. Additionally from July 27th the Civic are staging Camp Wizmania for three weeks. This camp is now fully booked but you can join the waiting list by calling 01 462 7477. It is a three week musical theatre summer camp for boys and girls aged 6-18 years. There’s also the Tots Camp available for ages 3-5 years. Get the chance to perform in Wizmania-The Musical, based on the stories and music of Wicked, Wizard of Oz and The Wiz on the stage of the Civic Theatre, Tallaght. This camp is ideal for students with an interest in performance and musical theatre.
