A NOTE FROM

website

THE EDITOR Welcome to the August issue of InTallaght! We have a jam-packed issue for you all this month, with something for every one of our readers. First up we have a feature about Taylor Swift after her amazing concert in the 3Arena in June. We wondered what exactly it is that makes this lady such a star and a force to be reckoned with. She seems to have the most dedicated fans and we spoke to one of them who even got to meet her on tour this summer! Next up we had a chat with Tallaght’s very own Hometown boyband member Dean Gibbons, who told us about the major success that they have had since being formed by Louis Walsh. Dean told us how he gets slagged for being the only Dub in the band, but that they’re all looking forward to their gig in Vicar Street this August. We also have a huge section dedicated to all things Debs–from hair to make up to dresses and more, for all of you who have their special night coming up. After all that studying for the Leaving Cert you are more than likely ready for the last big night out with your school friends and we’ve got the guide to help you get the best of everything!

John Lennon Musical Educational Tour Reaches Tallaght by genna patterson __________________________ Music Generation South Dublin rolled into the Library Square in Tallaght from July 21-23rd with the John Lennon Educational Bus.

The bus, which contains a fully equipped state-of-the-art music studio, offered an opportunity to young aspiring South Dublin musicians, to spend a day on board. There they learned to work with a crew of engineers to record and produce original music, produce and shoot music videos and documentaries and complete a broadcast quality music video. They also offered public tours of the bus on July 23rd. The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is a non-profit state-ofthe-art mobile audio and HD video recording and production facility and was made possible by Yoko Ono Lennon. The South Dublin visit is the start of a 24-day Irish national tour which will take in 11 counties and reach over 100 young musicians throughout Ireland.

Sarah says her areas of interest will include, “Women’s rights and opening up business links and cross border business links. There are a couple of important plans in the pipeline, it’s going to be an exciting time.” Sarah is orginally from Belfast, County Down and is a County Councillor for the Rathfarnham area. She speaks fluent Irish and previously worked in Financial Services. She lives

in Rathfarnham with her partner and daughter. InTallaght would like to wish Mayor Holland a succesful year ahead.

Tallaght Hospital Board Confirms New Crèche Facility by genna patterson ____________________________ Tallaght Hospital Board has confirmed plans to provide a new Crèche facility for children of staff on the Hospital site. Local Councillor Charlie O’Connor has supported a long time campaign by Tallaght Hospital staff who have been

concerned for a number of years that Crèche facilities would continue to be provided at the Hospital. O’Connor said, “Plans have now been put in place to provide for a new staff crèche on the Tallaght Hospital campus. This will involve the relocation of the crèche facility from its current location to another site on the hospital campus. It is envisaged that this new facility will be equivalent in terms of capacity to the existing crèche and will be designed to modern standards.”

Pat Rabitte Not Contesting Next Election by padraig conlon ____________________________ Local Labour TD Pat Rabbitte announced last month that he won’t be contesting the next general election in this constituency. Since being elected as a TD in 1989 as a member of the Workers Party, he has been one of the country’s most high profile politicians. He led the Labour Party from 2002 to 2007 and his most recent cabinet position was as Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources. He lost this post last year in a reshuffle after Joan Burton’s appointment as party leader last year. The Tánaiste Ms Burton was one of the first to remark on the news. “While Pat has had a significant national profile, he has always worked hard for the entire community in Dublin South West,” Burton said. “He will also be long remembered for the forensic and painstaking work he did as a member of the DIRT Inquiry.” “Pat’s wit and insight are unique and I am sure that while he is exiting politics, he will not be lost to Irish public life. There is no doubt that Pat has been one of the truly outstanding parliamentarians of his generation.” We will have a full-length interview with Pat Rabbitte in our next edition.

Tallafest Coming This Month! by genna patterson __________________________ Tallafest is finally here this month on Saturday August 15th. REEK SUNDAY WAS IN THE NEWS AS WEATHER CONDITIONS PLAYED HAVOC WITH THE PILGRIMS’ PLANS - MANY OF THE GOD FEARING CLIMBERS DIDN’T FEAR THE WEATHER AS MUCH

Bereaved Tallaght Father Raises Funds For Charity by padraig conlon ________________________ A father from Tallaght is nearing the end of a gruelling 690km walk dedicated to the memory of his young daughter and raising much needed funds for two very worthy causes. Tom Kelly from Aylesbury began walking from Malin Head in Donegal on July 18th destined for Mizen Head in Cork, where he is due to finish up on August 2nd. His youngest daughter Leah sadly passed away at just 7 years old in August 2013 after bravely battling with a form of cancer known as ependymoma. Devastated Tom and his wife, Rachel, described the trauma as like having their hearts broken into a million pieces. He said they felt shattered beyond anything that is imaginable and yet they manage to get through each day in the hope that they can keep Leah’s memory alive and help other families faced with the same situation. It is for these reasons that Tom has chosen to undertake his mammoth ‘Footprints for Leah’ sponsored walk to raise funds for the Aoibheann’s Pink Tie project and Barretstown. To donate simply log onto the Footprints for Leah Facebook page or the Idonate page of the same name at www.idonate. ie/FootprintsForLeah.

SDCC Opens Fairy Trail In Lucan by genna patterson ____________________________ South Dublin County Council (SDCC) has partnered with The Irish Fairy Door Company once again to create a magical woodland fairy trail, this time in Lucan Demesne. The interactive fairy trail was officially opened by Mayor Sarah Holland on July 16th and is the latest new family attraction in Dublin, giving young visitors the opportunity to discover a series of handmade wooden Irish Fairy Doors. Niamh Sherwin-Barry, Director at The Irish Fairy Door Company said, “The staff in South Dublin County Council have really been on board from the start. With trails in both Corkagh Park and Tymon Park already, we are just thrilled to be sending some more fairies over to Lucan to set up home.” Smartphone technology will also let guests find out all about the 17 individual fairies who live behind each door as they explore the trail.

MEET John

by PADRAIG CONLON

I used to get ____________________________ stopped by young in Tallaght today to meet lads who wanted “I’m with Paddy and go and look at potential units for the new to talk about Conor, some SBG Tallaght gym with him and now it can be older my builder friend Andrew. women in their 70’s who want to stop and chat about him! @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

One is on the Airton Road and the other is beside the Tallaght LUAS stop, so the gym will be somewhere in the middle of them! We had such a crazy run up to Conor’s fight and then Paddy’s last weekend so everything was on hold but I have nothing big coming up now until UFC Dublin in October. By the end of August we’ll have our location, it’ll probably take four weeks to kit it out so we’ll be looking to open late September. Paddy is a local hero and with all the fighters I’ve trained down the years he’s the first I’ve ever asked to open up a gym with because I believe in him, he’s such a great guy and he’s so proud of his home town. He’s got such a rich personality, he’s one of those people that you go away feeling better after talking to him.

Things are going great at the moment, there’s been such an outpouring of support from the Irish people towards the lads, they’re crossing all boundaries. I used to get stopped by young lads who wanted to talk about Conor, now it can be older women in their 70’s who want to stop and chat about him! There’s a huge movement towards MMA in the country at the minute. Things haven’t changed for me, tonight I’ve a class to teach at 8 o’clock and I’m going to take that class. If you look after minute by minute, year by year, takes care of itself. I’m very excited to be able to bring a first-class facility to the area which will be for everyone; all ages, all body types, all abilities, everyone welcome. To be honest with you I get more pleasure from training a guy in his 40’s who just wants to feel better about himself and lose some weight than training any of the top fighters because they’re incredible athletes with an unbelievable mindset so it’s easy to train them. I’ve cousins from Tallaght so I know the area well as I grew up coming here every weekend to hang out them.”

PLANNING YOUR DEBS

by RACHEL LYNCH

___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

The Debs season is almost underway!

Excited school leavers all over the country are right now searching high and low for that perfect dress. It’s a process we all remember fondly yet one that caused many sleepless nights (more than the Leaving Cert itself!). It’s not just the dress though, it’s the hair, the make up, the nails and even the shoes! The list is endless so it’s always best to plan in advance. Think practicality too, you are on your feet all night from the photos before you even leave the house to the dancing into the early morning. The most popular dresses are full length so don’t focus too much on the design,

InTallaght72.indd 15

try aim for comfort. Then you have the make up, and if you’re not sure on the type of look you are going for, take a picture of your dress and bring it into the makeup artist. They will be able to guide you on the best options for you and likewise with your hair. For instance if you have a backless dress then an up-style may be the perfect option to really showcase the dress. Then all that is left is the man! And ladies choose wisely there too, don’t end up stuck sitting in the corner all night because your man is too afraid to get up and have a boogie or the usual “someone who looks great in the pics”. Bring someone you will have a laugh with, after all it’s probably the last night you will share with all your school friends altogether. Check out our highlights of all the best suppliers of Debs Wear, Hair and Beauty in Tallaght.

Taylor swift

Taylor-Made For Fame Padraig Conlon takes a look at why Taylor Swift is such hot property right now and how she evolved from Country Music to the top of Pop. by padraig conlon @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

It’s a hot June night in Dublin’s 3Arena as a female singer puts on a show for her devoted fans while standing on a giant platform. The venue is heaving with

excitement as the songstress begins to address the crowd. The message is positive, uplifting, empathetic even. “I think it’s time to realise that sometimes we are so much more mean to ourselves than other people could ever be,” she says to the 13,000 souls inside the venue. “You’re not somebody else’s opinion of you. You are not damaged goods if you made mistakes and you are not going nowhere just because you haven’t gotten to where you want to go yet.” This isn’t any old singer however. This is Taylor Swift, the world’s biggest pop star and currently one of the most powerful women on the planet. Yet her words, and the way she speaks to her audience, are a million miles away from what you would expect of someone with her status. She seems to genuinely care for her fans and her shows have become the stuff of legend. Each one a two-hour communion between her

and her legion of absolutely fanatical “Swifties” packed with everything from life coaching to acoustic ballads, explosions and even a video interview with her two cats!

Stand Up Gal

The week before the Dublin show however, the 25-year-old superstar had shown just how powerful she is when she took on, and beat, Apple, the world’s most financially powerful

company. She forced them to abandon plans to withhold artist royalties for music streamed during the three-month free trial period for Apple Music. “Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing,” Swift said in an open letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook in which she threatened to withhold her latest album, 1989, from the service. “I say this with love, reverence, and admiration for everything else Apple has done.” Apple had heard enough and Eddie Cue, their senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, got in touch with Swift. A short time later he

Swift has carefully, methodically and brilliantly crafted a public persona designed to make you love her (or else)

posted on Twitter that the company had had a change of heart. “Apple will always make sure that artists are paid,” Cue tweeted, “#AppleMusic will pay artist for streaming, even during customer’s free trial period. We hear you @taylorswift13 and indie artists. Love Apple.” Swift’s action garnered support from fellow artists and the Recording Academy who in a statement said it applauded her “for taking a lead role in voicing the concerns of songwriters, artists, and producers.” Jack Antonoff from Indie act Bleachers tweeted, “I’m so proud that the loudest voice in music today is using it to stand up for those who are not heard.” The reaction to her victory also went way beyond the music industry.

Jennifer Lawrence, who was the world’s highest paid actor in 2014, said, “That letter that she wrote about Apple, I texted her and was like, ‘You’s a badass b–ch!’ She’s awesome,” the Hunger Games star continued. “She’s a lot more well spoken than I am.” Many artists had complained about how Apple went about their business but no one seemed able to do anything about it. Few in the industry however were surprised that Apple listened to Swift. Some commentators from the tech world are even going as far as saying that she may well have also saved Apple Music. Many artists who refused to put their music on Apple Music are now having a change of heart thanks to Swift’s intervention. Music industry analyst David Bakula said, “She wields a mighty sword, she is at the top of the game. She is the most well-known, most well-liked and most outspoken artist out there. When Taylor speaks, it’s so much more than just her social media following.” Swift has demonstrated a keen business brain and negotiating skills on a par with her songwriting abilities throughout her career. But how did she get to the very top and what makes her so very popular among her worldwide army of fans?

Heartbreaker Habits

By 2012 the public had a perception of Swift as a man-hungry serial dater unfortunately due to her public

dating of high-profile stars. Though her romantic relationships weren’t as successful as her career, they still inspired hits like We Are Never, Ever Getting Back Together (reportedly about Jake Gyllenhaal) and Dear John (as in Mayer). She landed huge advertising deals with brands like Diet Coke, CoverGirl, American Greetings and Keds and graced the cover of every major American magazine with Rolling Stone labelling her as “The Heartbreak Kid” for one of their covers in 2012. Her rise to the top of the music industry coincided with the advent of social media and she has maximised this for reaching out to her fans. Swift uses her hugely popular social networks (she has amassed a total following of over 140 million) like Instagram and Tumblr to form relationships with fans, re-blogging their posts, making them playlists and leaving comments with sincere life and relationship advice. “Taylor Swift is a PR mastermind of the highest order,” so says tech writer Chris Ostendorf on his Daily Dot blog titled, The PR Genius of Taylor Swift’s Viral Media Empire. “Swift has carefully,

24 // #intallaght / TWEET US InTallaght72.indd 24

30/07/2015 02:09

methodically and brilliantly crafted a public persona designed to make you love her (or else). In terms of image control, there probably isn’t a single entertainer out there today who’s as good at playing the game […] it’s her skills in self-promotion and image management that put her a cut above.” However Taylor Swift’s rise to supersonic worldwide-stardom goes far beyond her excellent media relations. More than any other star today she maximises her social media branding by connecting her online and real life personas in a way that makes her appear normal, approachable and down-to-earth. She has become almost as famous for her kind deeds and generosity towards her fans as she has for her music. She truly values their love and has stated in many interviews that her fans give her “extreme, unconditional, wonderful loyalty that I never thought I’d receive in my life, not from a best friend, not from a boyfriend, not from a husband, not from a dog.” Over the last few years she has done things like send Christmas presents to

her biggest fans, gave another $1989 to help pay off a student loan, asked them to star in the video for Shake it Off and even invited some of them around to her home to listen to her album 1989 before it was released!

Fabulous Fans

Her fans’ loyalty was once again evident last year when they went as far as to stop online leaks of 1989 in the days before its release. Album sales are important to Swift and she later told an interviewer how appreciative she was that the fans did this as it was the first time an album of hers had leaked but not trended on Twitter, all thanks to her legion of “Swifties”! One person who has experienced firsthand how much she values her fans is Suzie Dickinson from Trim. A massive Swift fan, Suzie was following her idol on tour around Europe this summer when she got the surprise of her life. “Basically I put a picture of a map on Tumblr which showed my route for going to Taylor’s concerts,” she said. “Taylor follows me on Tumblr so I

was hoping that she’d see it. I put it up a few more times to make sure she’d seen it. So when I flew over to Germany I got a message from Taylor’s official fan club, Taylor Nation. They wanted me to send on all my details like my name, email address, number, etc. “Over the next few days I kept getting these emails and I thought they weren’t getting my responses so I kept replying. Then at 9:30am in Glasgow on Tuesday I get a call from some American number that turned out to be from Taylor’s management team in Nashville. We talked for a few minutes, then out of nowhere they said ‘Taylor really wants to meet you’. I blanked out after that, but it turns out Taylor saw my picture on Tumblr and had her team stalk me for about a month to make sure I wasn’t crazy. “So I went to the venue where I was told to meet her and there were two other girls there. One of Taylor’s people came out and asked if we were Taylor’s Tumblr friends. So we went into this room where a corner was sectioned off and I heard Taylor say ‘send Suzie in’. So I went over, she knew my name and all

Taylor Swift and she said ‘Suzie thanks for coming to so many shows’. We just talked about cats and Dublin and she wanted to get a photo with me. I couldn’t believe it.” In the last couple of years Swift has made some new celebrity friends (Lorde, Lena Dunham, Karlie Kloss) and moved from Nashville, where she had lived and worked since high school, to New York City. She bought a pair of penthouses in Manhattan for $19.9 million and New York City’s tourism board swiftly announced her as its new global welcome ambassador. Her friendship with Girls creator Dunham has led her, in her own words, to become more open in interviews and discuss issues like feminism. Speaking with Time Magazine last year she said, “Honestly, I didn’t have an accurate definition of feminism when I was younger. I didn’t quite see all the ways that feminism is vital to growing up in the world we live in. I think that when I used to say, ‘Oh, feminism’s not really on my radar,’ it was because when I was just seen as a kid, I wasn’t as threatening. I didn’t see myself being held back until I was a woman.” Last November she gave another example of her immense power in a pre-Apple face off with Spotify, the Swedish streaming service. She pulled all her music off Spotify in a dispute over their so called “freemium model” which gives users free access if they tolerate commercials between songs. For anyone else, pulling their music off Spotify would be career Russian

When I was just seen as a kid, I wasn’t as threatening. I didn’t see myself being held back until I was a woman

roulette. But Swift is not like anyone else. She is a strong, uber-successful woman who is willing to stand up for what she believes. Writing in The Wall Street Journal last year she said, “It’s my opinion that music should not be free, and it is my prediction that individual artists and their labels will someday decide what an album’s price point is. I hope they don’t underestimate themselves or undervalue their art.”

Musical Chairs

Her latest album 1989 was released last Autumn and it marked a definitive move by Swift away from Country towards Pop. At the time of its release she said, “I spent two years making 1989. Two years gives you enough time to grow and change and let things inspire you. I was listening to a lot of late 80’s pop music and how bold those songs were and how that time period was a time of limitless possibilities. “In thinking about that, this album is a rebirth for me. This is my very first pop album. 1989 is the most sonically cohesive album I have ever made and my favourite album I have ever made.” This change in musical style came as no surprise to her fans, or the music industry. The first single, Shake It Off, was a hit on Top 40 radio and went straight to No. 1. Swift and her label must have been worried that the definitive break from Country might cost her valuable record sales. They need not have as 1989 sold one million copies in its first week and by March had outsold her previous two albums! Further evidence of her popularity in

this country was shown when 1989 stormed back to number one in the Irish album charts the week after her Dublin shows. Earlier this year she began a relationship with Scottish superstar DJ Calvin Harris and already they’re being spoken of as the most powerful couple in showbiz. Forbes magazine named them the highest paid celebrity couple with a combined income of $146 million last year, beating Beyonce and Jay Z into second place! Like Swift, Harris has some major endorsement deals, which makes their force in the industry even stronger. The future for Taylor Swift looks very bright indeed. She reigns as the undisputed Queen of Pop, has seven Grammy’s to her name already, career record sales in excess of 30 million albums and almost 80 million song downloads. To me it seems her popularity boils down to her very broad appeal. She writes pop songs people enjoy, is extremely good to her fans and knows how to talk with them on their level, a rarity among most of today’s celebrities. In spite of her vast wealth she comes across as grounded and humble and is not afraid to discuss things with her fans like how to deal with problems like heartbreak or not being able to fit in. She also appeals to parents, as she’s such a great role model for young girls, a hard worker, a tough businesswoman and a decent person who seems to genuinely appreciate all the success that’s come her way.

hometown

Homecoming for hometown Hometown are due to play Vicar Street this August, so Rachel Lynch caught up with Tallaght member Dean Gibbons to hear how the band are enjoying their success. by RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

It’s been an eventful couple of months for new Irish boy band Hometown and with two Irish number ones under their belts already they really have taken the charts by storm. The next few

months see them trying to make it in the UK with their manager Louis Walsh. We caught up with band member Dean Gibbons who is also a local man himself hailing from Tymon North here in Tallaght. He spoke to us about how the band was put together and what the plans are for the next few months. Hometown were pulled together by Louis Walsh in a system similar to that of the X Factor. The six-piece vocal group are made up of singers from all the four corners of Ireland. Walsh auditioned almost 2,000 young hopefuls for his latest pop endeavour and spent over two weeks mulling over his decision before settling on the final six which includes Brendan Murray (18), Cian Morrin (20), Dayl Cronin (21), Dean Gibbons (21), Josh Gray (17) and Ryan McLoughlin (21).

Dean says the process was a long one for everyone, “Basically Louis went onto The Late Late Show nearly two years ago and said he was looking for a new band to put together, we all turned up and it was a really hard process. It was kind of like X Factor but without the cameras and it just got whittled down until there was the six of us.” The band who have now been together for over a year all wanted to go down the route of music but just needed that break. Dean who was working in a shop at the time of his audition couldn’t believe that he had been chosen by Louis to join the band, “I’ve been singing on stage since I was about five years of age and getting into this band was unreal. I remember when I first met Louis Walsh I was starstruck”.

Love For Louis

Louis who knows this trade inside out, is adamant that this new group can go toe-to-toe with giants like One Direction and Five Seconds of Summer. He recently stated that he had the same “excited feeling that I had when Westlife started.”

hometown Dean believes that Louis is the best man for the job, “I don’t think we could have gotten anyone better to be fair. He gets us and knows that we are all Irish and we only have one Dub in the band and he loves to slag me over that, he loves the banter and he’s really witty. He’s all about having fun but also working hard.” The lads are from all over the country and although Dean admits at the start it was difficult getting to know one another now they are the best of friends. “At the start we all met in the hotel in Dublin and started rehearsing songs, I’ve been in bands and stuff before and a couple of the lads had been gigging in pubs so they too were used to that type of scenario. It was such a smooth transition from not knowing anyone to being able to sing together. We were given a song to sing and we just fell into it, and then the natural vocal blend just worked.” When Hometown’s first single Where I Belong was released it went straight to number one here in Ireland and Dean remembers the day well. “We were in a hotel at the time and we got a phone call to tell us it had gone to number one just literally before the charts came out and when I say we went ballistic it’s an understatement. It was such a huge achievement for us.” Dean says he found people were surprised by their style of music. “We were the most Shazamed track of 2014 and it was the fastest selling debut Irish single of 2014 too. You know how Shazam works–it’s a way of searching

It was kind of like X Factor but without the cameras and it just got whittled down until there was the six of us

for the artist of a song–everyone was Tweeting us saying I can’t believe you’re actually a boy band. We all play instruments as well which helps but at the moment we are just playing one or two guitars.” Getting the number one was an achievement all the lads found surreal at the time but getting it in Ireland was something they all found special. “We were so ecstatic that our own country Ireland had us at number one, that blew our minds a bit, we were so shocked that it was even in the top 10 because it was our first song and we had just released it. “Then we released our second song Cry for Help and that went to number one and we were like what the hell is going on? Even though that was at number one they were still playing Where I Belong.

The Fame Game

The guys really did seem to just burst onto the scene immediately but Dean doesn’t believe it was an overnight success as some people believe. “We put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears and we worked really hard.” The lads have been based in the UK over the past month and plan on releasing their music there soon. “We are hoping big things come from the UK and are hoping for similar success to what we had in Ireland but we would be happy with anything in the charts at all.” They fly home in August for their first main gig on August 21st at Vicar Street and Dean tells us it’s one of their biggest achievements to date. “We have a sold out night there and we are just so honoured to be playing it. We went to a lot of counties over the past few months except Dublin and everyone was asking ‘why aren’t you going to Dublin?’ but Louis had it in his head he wanted Vicar Street, he wanted the big one in the summer”. Dean explains how the travel comes as part and parcel with the job but that this is the longest he has been away from home. “It’s not as hard as you

think, with the likes of social media you have so much more contact with home than the likes of Westlife or Boyzone did when they were away. I miss home, I think we all do but at the same time you still get to see people and talk to them.” And that all important question – how many single lads in the band? Dean tells us he’s single and “five out of six of the lads are single so that’s a pretty good number.” So on talk of what’s to come for Hometown over the next few months Dean explains that they really are all go. “We have Vicar Street, we have just launched our UK video for Where I Belong, we have been gigging with McBusted and with then supporting the Vamps and Union J. “We are still recording the rest of our album, and that will be out hopefully by the end of the year but things can happen, dates can change. We have a lot of gigs coming up in Ireland as well, it’s almost like a summer tour.” Make sure to keep your eye on Hometown’s tour dates this summer and we wish the lads all the best for the next few months!

Welcome to the August issue of Sq.Magazine.. Well we’ve had another very busy month here at The Square. Firstly we had the arrival of some new friends to our Aquarium on the North Mall. Taking up residence in their new home is our Epaulette Shark and two Cat Sharks. Our Aquarium has now become a real ‘showstopper’ especially during feeding time by Seahorse Aquariums. We hope to add a Moray eel to our collection in the coming weeks when our big boys have settled into their new surroundings. Kealan from Seahorse Aquariums will be dropping in to give educational talks on the delightful array of beautifully coloured fish in our Aquarium over the coming weeks. As you know, summer is a busy time on the Centre Mall where we set up our summer camp for the kids for the month of July. From Punch & Judy to Hula Hoop Workshops, Build Your Own Bear to Street Dancing and of course our very talented face painters

were on hand at every event to paint the faces of all the young kids in the queues. And for all those ladies looking for something new to wear over the summer be sure to check out our new arrival in Ladies Fashions on Level 2. The One opened its doors showcasing an array of female fashions to suit everyone. How about some beauty pampering, well you can check out the newly launched Bare Minerals counter at Debenhams which is well worth a visit for all those ‘must have’ beauty products and tips!! As always we had great giveaways on our Facebook page and many customers were delighted to win prizes varying from a Treasured Doll to an Urban Decay make over to a River Island bag and lots more. Do keep your eyes on our Facebook and Twitter to be in with the chance to win lots more next month. As always, we hope to see you soon,

The last two weeks were so much fun here at The Square as we enjoyed the last of our Summer’s Cool events. Week 4 began with our Bear Making Workshop where you could build your own bear to take home with you.

Finally we finished up with a Lego Workshop which saw all the young kids work together to build some fantastic things along with helping them become the ultimate master builder! We would like to thank all of you that came along and enjoyed the past few weeks of fun here at The Square and we hope to see you all again soon at our next event, The Teddy Bear Picnic on Saturday 1st August from 1-4pm. on the Centre Mall.

Then we had the Magical Fairy Workshop where you could decorate your very own magical door. Finally we had some fun making our own personal name hangers! Week 5 was our final week and it was a special one. Wednesday saw us start with a workshop dedicated to blinging up your phone with lots of gorgeous diamonds and jewels. Next we had even more creativity with a Make Your Own Frame Workshop.

Strollex Snappy The Shark’s Grand Arrival

Kealan Doyle was there for the arrival and gave us an educational talk as it was International Shark Week. He also showed us how he feeds the fish!

It’s been a long wait but finally Snappy the Shark has arrived to our aquarium here on Level 2! Snappy is a banded cat shark which is a really friendly species and he’s joined by two epaulette sharks too!

Keep an eye on our Facebook page for regular updates or drop down to Level 2 and check out our new friends.

Snappy is now enjoying his new home and has already made friends with all his other fishy friends in the tank. Our resident Marine Biologist

Bare Minerals Opening We were delighted to gain another wonderful store in The Square this month. Bare Minerals had their official launch here at Debenhams on the 23rd of July. To celebrate their opening they had a Makeup Master class that evening in store. There were a limited number of spaces available. The lucky customers there on the night got some lovely goody bags and had great fun while they learnt all about how to apply the makeup and also how to focus on your best features!

The Cheeky Monkey fleet of Mini Strollex cars have now moved home. The cars which were originally based just outside our Jungle Gym on Level 3 have now relocated to the Centre Mall. The cars come in a range of striking colours including Ferrari Red, Barbie Pink, Lambo Yellow and Porsche Black and of course the popular Mini Garda Cars. The cars are available for as little as €2 for one hour or €5 for two hours. Just speak with our Customer Service staff who are on hand to help you with any questions or if you wish to test drive the cars!

Aquarium Cameras Coming Soon! After the exciting arrival of Snappy the Shark and his friends, we have more fun coming your way. We will be placing special underwater cameras into the tank and broadcasting live streamed footage of the fishes on our Square website. Keep an eye on our Facebook page to see when this is happening, and hopefully it will be really soon!

Wok To Walk 1st Birthday It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since Wok to Walk opened its doors here on Level 3 at The Square. Since then it has gone from strength to strength and is a personal favourite for many throughout the centre. Staff member Catherine Wrigglesworth told us how she finds it hard to believe it’s been a full year since they opened and how their customer base continues to grow, “We get a lot of customers that come in so excited because the food is really healthy and it’s fresh. We can cater to all tastes as we offer variety and the customer can choose whatever they want”.

Sunday Tea Party Treasured Dolls held a Sunday Tea Party here on Level 3 on July 26th. The lucky children and their parents who attended were chosen through Facebook and ran from 2pm to 3.30pm. The children had the option to bring along their own dolls or to borrow one in store to get involved in the hairstyle

demonstration which showed the children how to style their dolls hair. Then they had the fashion show which saw the dolls showcase some of their beautiful outfits all available in store. Croissant D’or provided finger food on the day with sandwiches and cake for all those in attendance.

Community Champion We would like to congratulate the students and teachers of St Kevin’s Boys School here in Kilnamanagh who are the winners of our June Community Champion award. Students and teachers worked hard before the end of the school year to ensure their school was the one chosen as the winner of the 30 iPads up for grabs from Ireland’s RSA.

The One Comes To Level 2 July saw the opening of a new store here in The Square. The One is on Level 2 and has a host of women’s fashions. We are delighted to have them and hope you’ll pop in to see what’s on offer.

The competition which was done through social media, saw pupils at the school participate in a video which then was viewed by many of you online. St Kevin’s received the most views online therefore winning them the 30 iPads. Fourth class teacher Emer Maher told us of her delight at the win, “We are absolutely delighted and want to thank all the local businesses for their great coverage and especially The Square because I know a lot of families will shop there and without them I don’t

think we would have gotten all the votes that we needed. It’s great for the local school, we have no iPads here so the kids are absolutely chuffed to get a whole set.” The school also received a €100 Gift Card from The Square to which Emer said she hopes will be spent on some of the accessories to go with iPads.

MOVIES

ANT-MAN

by GENNA PATTERSON

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

____________________________ Another Marvel movie to add to the collection

Ant-Man is the latest in the Marvel series, and seemed like one of the least likely to be made into a film. However, that is exactly what they’ve done. While some of the Marvel heroes’ powers are quite unbelievable (Iron Man, Falcon, Captain America), Ant-Man takes the proverbial biscuit-a man who shrinks and unshrinks because of a suit? Nonetheless, it is a fun movie, with a tried and tested recipe for a successful action hero film; there are silly sub-characters providing the light relief and a stern female to keep them in line. Ant-Man himself is played by Paul Rudd who brings his usual affable qualities to the role and succeeds at becoming a believable version of what could have been a total farce of a super hero movie (think Green Lantern by DC Comics). The movie does make fun of itself though, and even playfully questions the hero’s name to show they know it’s ridiculous. Scott Lang (Rudd) is just out of prison when he is selected by scientist Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), to don his special suit and become Ant-Man in order to thwart his former protégé Darren Cross’s efforts to replicate the technology. Dr Pym is adamant that the suit remain secret so that the super powers will not use it for evil, which is who Cross wants to sell the technology to.

The suit enables Lang to shrink in size, possess superhuman strength and control an army of ants, which is cool and the effects are amazing to watch as the camera zooms in and out of his size-changing effortlessly. Ant-Man is fun, funny and should not be taken too seriously. While it is certainly no Iron Man or Avengers, it is a good night’s entertainment and a mustsee for Marvel fans, at the very least to hear the references to the other Avenger movies.

Inside out

by GENNA PATTERSON

__________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

Inside Out is the latest movie from Pixar and like all their movies, will warm your heart and give you that bittersweet mix of joy and sadness, who are incidentally, the main characters names!

In this story, each humans brain is managed by a host of characters: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Fear (Bill Hader). The brain we follow is that of eleven-year-old Riley, whose parents have moved her to a new city away from all her friends. Just when Riley needs Joy the most, an accident happens inside her brain when Sadness loses the long term memory balls and the two must track them down and return them to safety. In their absence Riley is left to be managed by Anger, Fear and Disgust and finds it really hard to adjust to her new life.

Joy and Sadness embark on quite an eventful journey around Riley’s brain in an effort to return to headquarters and set things straight. There they meet a host of funny characters who try to help, but sometimes hinder their efforts. Inside Out is a delightful movie that is both funny and sad in equal doses, so just what we’ve come to expect from Pixar (Up, Finding Nemo, Toy Story). It’s definitely one for all the family!

MOVIES

THE GALLOWS

True Story

by rachel lyncH

by RACHEL LYNCH

___________________

___________________

A freak accident 20 years ago has come back to haunt the cast of a school play.

True Story - a film ironically based on a true story.

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

The film’s title comes from the same name of a high school play that resulted in the death of one of the actors. Instead of being fake-hanged, student Charlie accidently died for real. To honour his memory the school decide to bring the play back to the stage. However, three of the students decide to sabotage the set the night before the production is to take place, but soon find themselves locked inside with no way out. Is someone playing a joke on them? From this point on the movie turns dark with enough things popping out from corners to keep you on edge for the next hour.

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

The film setting is similar to that of The Blair Witch Project, granted in a whole lot better quality with the entire evening being filmed on the student’s camera. The students of this school are about to find out that some things are better off left alone. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a scare. The storyline isn’t too believable but it would make me think twice about visiting a school hall late at night! I felt that the single camera style of recording added extra intensity and I found myself avoiding watching the screen on more than one occation.

Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) is a top New York Times journalist who loses his job when it comes to light that he lied about a cover story which focused on the slave trade in Africa. At the very top of his career he now finds himself jobless. Trying to drum up any type of work he can find in the media industry, he is contacted by a freelance journalist who wants an opinion on an identity theft involving him. Michael is unaware his identity has been used and what follows is truly unbelievable. A man named Christian Longo (James Franco) who is on the FBI’s most wanted list has assumed Finkel’s name and stands accused of

murdering his wife and three children in Oregon. Seeing a way to rebuild his shattered reputation, Finkel meets with Longo to hear his story. Christian denies the murders and as Michael begins to build a bond with the man accused of these heinous crimes he starts to believe he is in fact innocent. Christian agrees to allow Michael write a book about his life in return for lessons in writing. Is Christian truly innocent or is it all a game? I hadn’t seen the trailer before I reviewed True Story, yet as soon as the lights went down I was captivated by the plot from start to finish. Knowing it’s based on true events just makes you want to understand the personalities more but as soon as you think you have mastered a character they completely shock you.

An exhilarating action movie to take your breath away.

A female buddy-cop movie that is fun but nothing much else

It’s the fifth installment of Tom Cruise’s action franchise Mission Impossible but don’t worry if you haven’t seen the rest, I hadn’t myself and still really enjoyed it. With the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) now disbanded, Ethan Hunt finds himself with nothing to do. With years spent saving the world now he feels redundant, that is until a new threat called the Syndicate emerges. The Syndicate is a network of skilled operatives who are dedicated to establishing a new world order via an escalating series of terrorist attacks. So as you can imagine this prompts Ethan to gather his team back together and tackle what is possibly his toughest mission yet.

It all sounds pretty heavy for those of you who haven’t seen any of the other films, but don’t be put off by the entire secret service lingo. The film is easy to watch even for someone like myself that was completely unaware of what to expect having not seen the previous films. There are some incredibly impressive stunts throughout the movie, most of which were carried out by Cruise himself. His hands-on involvement certainly adds to his character in this latest Mission Impossible installment and won’t disappoint fans of the franchise.

Hot Pursuit is the latest in a long line of recent female buddy cop movies, but doesn’t quite meet the comedic standard (like 2013’s The Heat). While it is funny in parts, the two main characters played by Reese Witherspoon and Sophía Vergara are so type-cast it gets to be a little tiring to watch. Witherspoon plays a by-the-book cop, Cooper, who has been relegated to the office after accidentally assaulting the mayor’s son. However she is given a chance to redeem herself when she is assigned care duty of a Colombian drug traffickers’ wife, Daniella Riva (Vergara), to bring her to testify in a case against the cartel’s drug lord.

Things go wrong when Cooper and her partner arrive early to collect Riva and her husband though; two rival gangs show up and a fight breaks out, killing Riva’s husband and Cooper’s partner. In an effort to protect her, Cooper takes Riva on the run, and suddenly the two are outlaws, hiding from the gang and crooked cops. Hot Pursuit is fun in parts, but sticks to the formula of ‘straight-laced cop vs. badass prisoner’ and never really breaks the mould. At times it feels as though even the actors are bored of playing their characters so onedimensionally. What saves it is some middle-of-the-road situation comedy and the stars’ reputations, which may be just a little tarnished after this movie. Considering Witherspoon was a producer on this, it could be doubly worse for her career.

Gaga accompanied the boys on the piano for their rendition of Ordinary Love, which featured on the soundtrack for the film Long Walk to Freedom. They continued the love the next day on Instagram and Twitter and who could rule out further collaboration?! Watch this space!

Wildcard To Release ‘A Doctor’s Sword’ by genna patterson ____________________________ Wildcard Distribution are set to release Gary Lennon and Bob Jackson’s A Doctor’s Sword movie on August 7th. The Irish movie tells the incredible story of Aidan MacCarthy, a UCC trained doctor from West Cork who survived some of the most harrowing episodes of World War II (including the atomic bombing of Nagasaki) and his family’s search to uncover the origin of the Japanese Samurai sword, which now resides in MacCarthy’s Bar in Castletownbere. The documentary premiered at the Cork Film Festival last November to a sold-out crowd, and is released in Dublin and Cork On August 7th.

The Grandeur of Delusions is a twohander play set to be staged in the Civic Theatre from September 3rd to the 5th. Both actors in the “monologue play for two people” are locals; Noelle Brogan is from Firhouse and Aaron Jenner is from Jobstown (We will have an interview with both in our next edition). The play tells the story of an alcoholic talking to himself through the medium of his delusion who is a girl. The absence of love in his life is enough to manifest itself in oblivion drinking, as he tries to fill the void of ‘lacking’, which he doesn’t understand, and only the temporary solution of blackouts can redress and relieve his suffering.

Tiger Dublin Fringe Festival Early Release Tickets by Genna patterson ____________________________ The Tiger Dublin Fringe Festival is returning this September for its 21st year. Early release tickets are on sale already from www.fringefest.com. The festival runs over two weeks and offers new theatre, circus, dance, comedy, spectacle, music, live art and unexpected experiences.

This play deals in an ironic and funny fashion with the trials and tribulations of families in desperation. It is written by Hugh Murphy who makes the point that addiction is not the end of a person’s dysfunctional relationship with alcohol but rather the start, and it emanates from deep, often repeated physiological trauma from childhood. This play gives a snapshot into the life of one who suffered, from a deprived childhood. Suitable for ages 15+. Presented by Heart and Soul Theatre Company, for more information please check out their Facebook page. The full programme launched online on July 29th and includes the awe inspring Spiegeltent including Australian circus legends Company 2 who bring their show Scotch & Soda to Dublin. The 2015 Spiegeltent programme traverses circus, music and more; the festival is excited to announce the participation of Tony-nominated Mx Justin Vivian Bond, with special guest star Glen Hansard. Ed Sheeran Rocks Croke Park by Genna patterson ____________________________ If you read our last issue you’d know that we’re all fans of Ed Sheeran at InTallaght, and there’s certainly a lot of evidence to suggest he is the nicest musician out there. The ginger singer/ songwriter played two sold-out gigs at Croke Park on July 24th and 25th and revealed that Ireland is his biggest market and he sells more here than

anywhere else in the world. Ed also had a surprise for his fans and brought out Dublin band Kodaline on the Friday night to sing their song All I Want, while on the Saturday he had a double-whammy by bringing out Kodaline and Glen Hansard. Not only that but Ed helped Kodaline bassist Jason Boland propose to his girlfriend on stage in front of 80,000 people. Ed tweeted later on, “Thank you to Kodaline and Glen Hansard for joining me on stage today to sing some tunes. And congratulations to Jay, what a way to propose!”

Robbie Keane announced that he, Claudine and Robert Jnr are to be joined by a second child when he posted, “Very excited to announce that Claudine is pregnant with our second child. We are all delighted. Couldn’t resist sharing Robert’s reaction when he found out his wish had finally came through.” They also shared a too cute video of Robert’s reaction to the news when he found out his dream has come true!

American Rock band Alabama Shakes have added an extra date to their Dublin gig in November. The band played a Marlay Park gig last month with Imelda May and Paolo Nutini. Alabama Shakes had previously been set to play one night at The Olympia on November 4th, but due to popular demand they’ve added another night on November 3rd too. Tickets are €33.50.

MUSIC

By mixing genres like bluegrass, folk, soul and jazz the band has certainly used a big palette of colors on their debut album OKI’S WAGON A CURIOUS DOSE by LINN THERESE HELDAL @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTLINN

___________________________ What is it about Oki’s Wagon?

One thing is that they have already hit a nerve after the very first listen, through the very first song, of their very first album. Another thing is that you get a feeling of being in a different decade and in a very different place. It could be the fact that a smokey blues sound is not exactly on top of the wish list for bands nowadays - maybe that’s what makes it so refreshing and rejuvenating. Oki’s Wagon first started out as a folk trio with Naoise Hayden, Shane Fitzgerald and Conor Shanley, in the beginning of 2013. They are now, with additional members Sean Comiskey, Audrey Gleeson and Dan Stuart, a full-blown six-piece. They have become regulars around venues in the ‘auld town’ and they have also performed at big festivals like Electric Picnic and the Jack of Diamonds Rhythm & Roots Festival. By mixing genres like bluegrass, folk, soul and jazz the band has certainly used a big palette of colors on their debut album, which is suitably

titled A Curious Dose. When I reviewed their single release, Shake, earlier this year I said that the instrumentation was kept natural, without any digital hurley burley. It seems that was the road to follow - the production is far from excellent, something that gives the whole album an unprocessed and unpolished live-feel. It literally kicks off with the energetic, foot-stamping Horror Chord. Despite the great energy that gives you an urge to dance, the lyrics are dark, anxiety-ridden, fearful, longing and bitter - the hard luck tales are returning throughout the album. “Fear wants to be my only friend / It lingers longer then I’d like to pretend” and “I didn’t walk away / When I should have f*cking run” tells Audrey Gleeson. The rapid instrumentation and the regular hah! -chants, together with Gleeson’s sassy vocals, really gives it an edge. The slide guitar, piano and mandolin gives a vintage feel to the single release Shake. Gleeson’s fine smokey blues vocals rasps in all the right places, especially when she hits those high notes and at the take off on the hooks. Bottom of the Stairs is smooth and reserved, while the ballad Still of the Night aches and yearns with its beautiful and haunting sound and it lets Gleeson really show off the strength in her voice. The catchy choruses follow each other

like pearls on a string on this album and the short and sweet The Gab of the Geese is no different. It’s uplifting and contagious with its vibrant banjo and guitars. Lyrically it’s also more positive: “I know that you feel pain / I know it gets hard / But tomorrows a new day / I say, it’ll be ok.” Town of Misery is seductive and mysterious in all its glory, with stop/ start effects, bassdrum and a thrilling banjo. You know you have found a good recipe when you can allow your chorus to be consisting mainly of “oo oooo” with a few “hah’s!” along the way and make it the most catchy and captivating song on the album. With A Curious Dose the band manages to stay traditional and be innovative at the same time. Each and every member of the band has influenced the sound, something that makes it diverse and eclectic. It’s going to be very interesting to see what the future holds for Oki’s Wagon - I’ve got a feeling they’ve got a lot more up their magic sleeves.

Meghan Trainor ft. John Legend Like Im Gonna Lose You by LINN THERESE HELDAL

___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTLINN

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you can’t possibly have missed how Meghan Trainor exploded into the charts with her breakthrough hit, the classic bubblegum doowop song All About That Bass.

Since then she has proven that she is far from some one-hit wonder, with the smash hits Lips Are Moving and Dear Future Husband following in its wake. She has also inspired some great controversy and confusion around her lyrics. People just can’t seem to agree whether she is an old-fashioned, sexist prude with a chastity belt, that sends us back five

decades when it comes to gender roles, or if she is an inspiring, positive feminist that applauds women with humorous and sassy lyrics. Feminist or not, she is now out with her fourth single, the elegant retro soul ballad Like I’m Gonna Lose You, a duet with John Legend. It stands out as one of the few ballads on the Title album and also because the lyrics and sound is a lot more emotional and genuine than her usual blue-eyed style. The theme is based around fatalism and on not taking anyone that we love for granted. Finally, this is actually a song that focuses on all aspects of love and not just on the typical boyfriend/ girlfriend relationship. The song empathizes Trainor’s vocal abilities and together with John Legend’s silky vocals there is a great balance. Like I’m Gonna Lose You is Trainor’s first sugarfree song and with that it’s by far the best track on Title.

RARE REPLAY by Colm O’Muirí

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

___________________________ Rare Replay is an upcoming video game compilation to celebrate thirty years of Rage game developers. The game is published by Microsoft Studios and developed by Rare for the Xbox One.

The game features a wide variety of games spanning thirty years and with that the collection features some 2-D classics as well as some Xbox 360 classics. GoldenEye 007, which is the most famous of Rare games, and was originally on the Nintendo 64, is not featured in this 30 game collection due to licensing restrictions. However some of Rare’s other well-known games are present in the collection and one of those is the cult classic Conker’s Bad Fur Day. To look at the character you may think this to be a cute child’s game however Conker contains graphic cartoon violence, alcohol use, tobacco use, and plenty of profanities, vulgar and dark humour. The most recent game in the collection is Perfect Dark Zero, which is a first-person shooter video game for the Xbox 360. The collection also features the first game in the series, Perfect Dark, which is an 18’s game originally released on the Nintendo

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter by Colm O’Muirí

__________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a horror adventure video game available for Microsoft Windows and the PlayStation 4. It is developed and published by

the independent Polish studio The Astronauts. The game is set in 1973 and you play the role of paranormal investigator Paul Prospero who after receiving a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter, and realising he is in danger decides to travel to Red Creek Valley. However upon arriving our occult-minded detective finds that the boy has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder. Upon looking into Ethan’s disappearance Prospero quickly realises that the brutal murder that Ethan Carter disappeared shortly after, may not be the only local murder that is worth looking into. The game is set in an open world environment meaning that you can roam around and explore your environment at will while trying to solve the case which is in front of you. The game is a first-person game also. Playing as Prospero you will have to use his paranormal abilities

The game has a strong focus on atmosphere and mood in order to solve crimes. Some of his paranormal abilities include sensing where important objects to your case are located and reassembling the timeline of events tied to certain deaths. Although the game is a private detective-centred game The Vanishing of Ethan Carter has a strong focus on atmosphere and mood something that was done brilliantly by The Creative Assembly and Sega in their recent video game Alien Isolation. Originally released for Microsoft Windows The Vanishing of Ethan Carter was released for the PlayStation 4 on July 15th, using the Unreal Engine 4. For those of you who enjoy the game one of the creators has confirmed that they are looking at making a VR version of the game in the future, which is something to keep an eye on. For now however you will have to make do with the PS4 version which is available for €18.99 or €17.09 for PS Plus members. The game has proven to be a hit for Microsoft windows and hopefully the same can be said for the PS4 version of the game.

ENTERTAINMENT EXTRA BATMAN V SUPERMAN DAWN OF JUSTICE

Comic Con 2015 by Colm O’Muirí

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

___________________________ Taking place between July 9th and 12th San Diego Comic Con 2015 was the 48th convention in the long-running yearly expo. One of the biggest at this year’s

convention was Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD TRAILER IS WELL WORTH A WATCH

SUICIDE SQUAD

BATMAN, WONDERWOMAN & SUPERMAN

The second trailer for the movie was also broadcast during the convention and following the disappointment of the first trailer the second trailer looks great, and the hype train can finally leave the station. Especially for anyone who likes a darker comic book film adaption, with some spoilers/teasers present in the trailer. During the event rumours started circulating that Ben Affleck would also write, direct and star in a Batman standalone film, however nothing has been confirmed by Warner Bros or DC Comics at the moment. DC stole the show to a point this year especially considering that Suicide Squad had its debut trailer released and we also got to see Jared Leto’s Joker for the first time in it. Leto’s joker came under some heavy criticism when pictures of him in character where posted online however if the trailer is anything to go by he looks to be doing a brilliant job.

JARED LETO’S JOKER

DEADPOOL

Suicide Squad is the story of a group of well-known villains such as Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and others. For anyone who watched the poor quality trailer that was leaked during Comic Con, the HD version is now on YouTube and well worth a watch. It wasn’t all about DC Comics at the conference Marvel/Fox were also present and displaying new content, the one which caught my attention and many others is the Deadpool movie. Starring Ryan Reynolds in the title role, Deadpool is the quintessential anti-hero. For a glimpse of what to expect from the film the reveal trailer featuring Ryan Reynolds and Mario Lopez is worth a look as no official footage that was shown at Comic Con is online, however it is to appear online in the coming weeks. Deadpool also stars Morena Baccarin who is known for her roles in Gotham

as well as Anna in the remake of the classic television series V. Stars from the upcoming X-Men Apocalypse film as well as Fantastic Four and Wolverine 3 all gathered during their panel along with the star of the upcoming Gambit film Channing Tatum. It is also rumoured that Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Wolverine will be in Wolverine 3. Quentin Tarantino also held a panel to promote his upcoming film The Hateful Eight which featured some of the stars of the film including Michael Madsen, Eli Roth and Kurt Russell, whose moustache looks glorious. There was many more sneak peeks, panels and trailers at San Diego Comic Con 2015, Star Wars to name just one, and the whole thing looked amazing. Here is hoping that next years is just as amazing, for reviews of some of the above movies over the coming months check out our Cinema pages.

TECH

There is no denying that drones are a fascination

DJI INSPIRE 1

drones

by COLM O’MUIRÍ

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

Drones are the latest in a long line of products which were initially developed by militaries for attack, defence and surveillance purposes.

GPS, duct tape and even the internet are all military developed technologies which we use in our everyday lives, so with that in mind we here at InTallaght decided to look at the next technology to make the leap from military to commercial purposes. Drones were one of the most sought-after purchases of Christmas 2014 and you would expect that they will be just as popular for Christmas 2015. In Ireland there are over 50 companies today that are licensed to operate drones. On the 14th of July 2015 Green Aviation launched in Ireland, becoming Ireland’s largest commercial drone company in the process. Green Aviation has produced drones which were used in the making of Hollywood blockbusters such as Harry Potter, Mission Impossible and Skyfall. To fly unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones in public places in Ireland you are required to have a licence to do so,

otherwise it is illegal. You are also not permitted to fly drones unless it is a designated wide open space, this does not include public parks as there is a safety issue involved and this includes your back garden. There are plenty of rules and regulations for would-be drone enthusiasts to familiarise themselves with, although Ireland is actually one of the friendlier countries for those who fly them as a hobby. Drones have come a long way since being used by the American Military, and countless others, for surveillance and attack purposes in warzones. However one of the biggest reasons for people being opposed to drones is

DJI PHANTOM 2

the invasion of privacy. There are those who believe that there are dangers with a device which can observe and record others while those who are controlling it remain unseen. There is no denying that drones are a fascination and a hobby which will continue to grow in popularity over the coming years. This can be seen with some of the stunning photography these devices can get which otherwise photographers would not be able to capture. Examples of some of the imagery drones have captured over the past few years are images of inside volcanoes, a frozen Niagara Falls and beautiful landscapes from angles and heights which would not be possible without this technology. The price of drones in Ireland are relatively cheap with some equipped with HD cameras being available for as little as €110 and others without cameras on the market for as little as €80. Any drone enthusiasts who are looking at purchasing a drone and want to familiarise themselves with some of the rules and regulations before purchasing and knowing where to fly and not to fly their drone should check out IAA.ie for all the latest rules and regulations in Ireland.

MOTOR

BMW X5

by RACHEL LYNCH

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

____________________________ This week we headed down to Charles Hurst Usedirect Ireland at Kingswood Tallaght to test drive the BMW X5.

The garage has a mix of budget and premium used cars for every price bracket. The BMW X5 is one of the leading luxury SUV’s and has proven itself since its introduction. BMW have made slight changes to the model over the years but have stuck with the traditional styling that works well. Visually it’s a beauty from the inside out. The model we test drove was the BMW X5 XDRIVE35D SE which was an automatic 3 litre diesel engine. On first glance I was really impressed with the sleek sporty finish to the exterior and the chrome finish that is featured right around the model is eye-catching and modern. The cream interior is fresh and as you would expect comfort is never an issue with the X5, nor is quality. There is plenty of room for five with ease, the materials are all what you would expect from BMW and the luxury SUV class. The mahogany finish which is the main feature of the dashboard really is stunning and the dials all have their appropriate placing without looking too cluttered. The list of extras are endless with this car from cruise control to electric seats and everything in between.

So what about the drive itself? I drive a manual car myself so being treated to an automatic really added to a carefree experience. As soon as you get behind the wheel you feel in charge of the road, the car steers with ease so much so you almost forget you are behind the wheel of an SUV. This is a top spec model and the drive certainly lived up to what I expected, I left the garage feeling the need to invest in an SUV car. This particular model will set you back €41,950. Annual road tax for the year works out at €1,200. Call Charles Hurst Usedirect Ireland today on 01-5314520 to arrange a test drive and talk to their on-site business manager about tailoring a payment package to suit you or check out their website to see some of their extensive range of vehicles at usedirectireland.ie

PROPERTY

buying a new house by Colm O’Cochlain

___________________ With the economy picking up again, Colm O’Cochlain from O’Cochlain solicitors gives InTallaght readers some guidelines on how to go about buying a house, continued from the previous issue of InTallaght. Last issue he spoke about selecting a solicitor. After you choose a solicitor the Auctioneer will send out confirmation to your solicitor that you are buying the house and a copy to the Vendors solicitor. The Vendors Solicitor will draft contracts. This may take some time as they may have to take up the title deeds from the Vendors lender. Your lender will carry out a valuation and if it is ok will issue a loan pack to your solicitor for the new property. You will also get a pack and will have to comply with special

conditions. These are normally straight forward. Once the solicitor gets the contracts and loan pack they will write to you and advise you on any issues. You should get the house surveyed to make sure it is structurally sound and the plumbing and electricity are working. Your solicitor will also raise any queries about matters that need to be clarified about the property. They should make sure all property taxes are paid and all other title matters have been complied with or will be before closing. When your solicitor is happy to proceed he/she will contact you to come in and sign contracts. The balance of the 10% deposit is payable on signing. You will also sign the loan offer documents. The Solicitor undertakes to your lender that the title to the property is fine, that they will Stamp the deed, register your ownership and send them the deeds when it’s all done. The contracts are sent to the Vendors solicitor and they have to sign both and return one. When one is returned you are bound by the contract and cannot pull out without incurring a financial penalty such as losing

your deposit. A closing date should be agreed at this stage. Once it has been agreed your solicitor will request your check, send you a statement for the balance purchase monies, stamp duty and fees. These have to be paid before closing. The closing date might be delayed if the vendors are also buying as they will need to line up their purchase and sale for the same day. The Solicitors will send documents between each other in preparation for closing and once everything is ready to go your solicitor will transfer the purchase monies to the Vendors solicitor who will send the title deeds to your solicitor. Your solicitor will carry out the searches and if everything is ok will close. That means you can collect your keys. The process from paying your deposit to closing normally takes between 8 and 10 weeks but can be quicker or longer depending on circumstances. If you need any further information or clarifications please contact me at colm@ocochlain.ie or at Colm O’Cochlain & Co at 014590684.

BOOK

AUTHOR JOHN SANDFORD

gathering prey by genna patterson

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

American novelist John Sandford has released another book in the hugely popular Rules Of Prey series following detective Lucas Davenport. The latest, indeed 25th novel in the series called Gathering Prey, once again finds Davenport in a sprawling crime chase across America.

Having never read any of the series, I was surprised to be drawn right into the story. The reader doesn’t need to know Davenport’s extensive history either, as it is often referred to throughout the story so that you know what is going on, without being too evasive nor over-explained. Davenport gets put on the trail of a cult gang of travelling killers, when

his adopted daughter Letty befriends two travellers Skye and Henry passing through San Francisco. When Skye calls Letty some time later to say that Henry has gone missing, and that she has been told by members of the gang that he was brutally murdered by them, Letty decides to do what she can to help–by calling her father Lucas Davenport. At first her father thinks that Skye is just trying to scam them, but after he looks into the details of the rumoured murders, he starts to find some truth in her story. The trail of the killers, led by the infamous ‘Pilate’ stretches across the Upper Peninsula as the travellers follow the Juggalos (a group of travellers who dress like clowns) from carnival to festival. The group fund their escapade by selling drugs, but leave a path of destruction behind. As Lucas attempts to find any truth in the rumours of their killings and finds suspicious links back to a murder of a young actress in Los Angeles he must incorporate a number of different

departments and jurisdictions of the police force. Lucas must work the case and be careful, all while trying to keep his daughter safe and stay true to the law. One of the most interesting parts of the book is the intricacies of managing a case across territories and Sandford has clearly done his research. Although seeing as he has written 25 books about the same police detective, it’s doubtful he would be so successful if he hadn’t. The story is quite a page turner, and I found it difficult to put down. While it isn’t exactly taxing on the brain, it is enjoyable to see if the bad guys will get away with it or not, and how they will be brought to justice. It was like a book version of your favourite American crime show, and I definitely found it compulsive to keep reading. The character Davenport while slightly vain, is believable and wellrounded. As with most great characters, he has flaws, but is all too aware of them himself. He gets pulled into cases, but according to his past sometimes too personally to his own detriment. While there are violent scenes in the story, they are not too gruesome, and therefore easier to read without being put off to go further. Gathering Prey continues to feature on the New York Times Bestseller list and is by no means the end of the series. After reading this book I would definitely go on to read other stories in the series, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good crime/thriller novel.

WRITERS CORNER

Lost Balance SAMHRADH by Christopher Kelly by CH Branagan ___________________________________________ ___________________________________________ I knew it was a big order to fill.

Potterin’ around town like an urban cowboy, lookin’ for the one guy I knew who could help. I met him when I wanted a change. A big change. ‘Says people call him the Stage Manager, that he loves theatre and volunteers. An appropriate nickname then. But somehow I knew better. I approached him one day and asked why he plops Euro notes into someone’s bag or sits in a cafe for half an hour just to give someone who’s running late his own untouched breakfast. He replied, “Sometimes I like to see the faces of those who get what they deserve.” The rest of the conversation was full of wisdom. I’d been lost in the past a while, trying to find my place. Started questioning the state of things, trying to find the force -- or forces -- behind everything. And show ‘em that a man with a broken heart is not a play-thing. Meeting him seemed like proof there was something more and what I wanted wasn’t out of reach. So on this Sunday afternoon he was there again, standing on the cobblestones. He’d found me. An older fella, grey hair and dressed in a very colourful outfit. Seemed he had a sense of humour. “I know what it is that you want,” he spoke slowly. “I can feel it, stronger than anyone else’s desire.” I’d never felt my mouth dry so quickly. “For me to make it happen, you’re going to have to let it go. Stop worrying. It’s mine to give to you. You just have to follow the signs.” His voice had a rhythm that made it impossible not to trust him. Just like that, I didn’t want it anymore because I felt like it already happened. My fist burning as I’d imagined it would. I knew it was a big order to fill, but I was going to punch God in the face.

Combines trundle down Shady Lane; Enormous monsters lit up like spaceships Land in the field next door. Wheat basking in the late summer sun Is reduced to stubble in no time. At daybreak the transformation is complete. A rude awakening for the wildlife As even the hare’s corner has disappeared. Neither a haystack nor a needle to be found Instead huge round bales strewn around. And what now? a makeover! beautifully ploughed Seeds sown, a new beginning. Charles is 57 and lives in Skerries. He has been writing poetry for many years and has been published in InTallaght before.

it tallaght student union

Introducing IT Tallaght’s new student union

jessica Wall President IT Tallaght Students’ Union ____________________________ My name is Jessica Wall and I am the Students’ Union President in IT Tallaght. I am from Tallaght

and this year I completed an Honours Degree in Business Management. It was my experiences over the past four years that led me to want to run for the position of Students’ Union President. After three years of high involvement with the GAA Club in ITT, I became the first ever female chairperson of the club in my final year. I have always been involved in the college life and I loved every minute of it. I was elected by the Students of IT Tallaght to represent them on a local and national level. On a national level, my role involves representing the students of IT Tallaght at National Councils with the Union of Students in Ireland. One of my key responsibilities is ensuring that the Union stays on track with the plans and objectives we set out for the year. My office is located in the Students’ Union building, where I have a open door policy for students to pop in and have a chat no matter what the issue. The main point on my agenda for the upcoming year is to introduce a website for our Students’ Union as this is something we currently do

not have. On this website, we hope to include information that can help make life easier for the students. This website will provide everything from information regarding clubs and societies, upcoming events, campaigns to education and welfare related material. I also intend to work closely with businesses in the local area to help engage students in the Tallaght community which is very close to my heart. We have a great team here in the Students’ Union this year and I am really happy to have Aisling and Shauna working alongside me, whom I have no doubt will excel in their Education and Welfare roles respectively. We studied Business Management together for the past four years and we will each graduate in November with First Class Honours Degrees. Pauline, our Secretary, will have 16 years of experience this September and we couldn’t be more delighted to have her in the Union. She is dedicated to helping students and that is what we are all about. We also have four part-time officers; Equality, Clubs & Societies, Internal and External Entertainment. We will have a large number of first years entering the college from September 4th. We have Freshers’ Week which will run from September 21st until the 25th. We have been busy planning this week throughout the summer and we hope it will give new students a taste of college life here at

IT Tallaght. During this week we also have Clubs and Societies sign up days. I believe that being part of the wide range of Clubs and Societies available is a great way to take a break from studying, meet new friends and also try something new. We have been working hard here to ensure this year is one to remember for the students. I hope students will get involved in activities on and off campus as I believe it is important to find a good balance between your education and your college experience. A lot of what we have been up to will be seen through InTallaght Magazine or alternatively you can see our Facebook page for more details of ongoing events (http://www.facebook.com/ ITTallaghtSU). If anyone has any questions about the college or the Students’ Union, please don’t hesitate to contact us. My final message to students is to get involved and enjoy every minute of your experience here. We will be with you all the way to give a helping hand at all times. We look forward to meeting you all.

aisling cusack deputy president for education __________________ My name is Aisling Cusack and I am the new Deputy President for Education in the Students’ Union over in the Institute of Technology Tallaght.

It was third year when I really began wanting to run for the Students’ Union. I was really enjoying getting involved with events run by the SU and helping with campaigns throughout the academic year. Getting involved with the Union and going along to events with your friends can really add to your college experience and I would encourage all students to participate in what they can. It was fourth year then when I decided I was 100% running in the election and I have never looked back since. It’s already been a whirlwind of excitement and I can’t wait for what’s to come. I have just completed an Honours Degree in Business Management along with Jessica and Shauna. We all knew each other prior to working in the Union from our course and being in the ITTD Ladies GAA Club.

This meant that it didn’t take long at all for us to gel together and learn how to work as a team. During my time in office, I hope to install a more effective tutoring programme within the college that will be facilitated through our SU website, which we plan to launch in the coming weeks. Along with this, I want to prepare students for the world of employment for when they leave college or for anyone seeking parttime work. I will organise a number of LinkedIn and CV workshops throughout the year to help students increase their chances of employment. At the beginning of the year I want to promote the benefits of being a Class Rep such as the confidence one can gain and the added benefit of having it on your CV. I want to emphasise the importance of electing the best person for the job as it will be this person that your lecturer will have the most one-on-one interaction with regarding any class issues throughout the year. I’m really passionate about helping students to get the most out of their education and time in IT Tallaght both academically and socially and I believe myself and the rest of the team will each do our very best to effectively do this.

shauna homan welfare officer __________________ My name is Shauna Homan and I am the new Welfare Officer in the Students’ Union.

Along with the two girls, I have just finished my Honours Degree in Business Management. I have always enjoyed being involved in the Students’ Union and engaging with students in the college. During my time in ITT, I was a student leader, which involved introducing first years to the campus and showing them around. This was a great experience for me and I loved helping the students settle into college life. It can be a huge shift from secondary school so it was fulfilling to help them make the transition into third level. The induction weeks are something I’m really looking forward to which will be happening in early September. My involvement in clubs and societies throughout my time in the college has

given me the confidence to take up this position in the Students’ Union and given me the courage to partake in the SU elections. I would advise students to get involved in any clubs and societies that interest them as there are so many benefits. I have made so many friends through my involvement with the Ladies Basketball club and am so happy that I got involved. As Welfare Officer, I want to ensure that the students’ time in the college is as stress-free as possible. I will aid students with any issues regarding sexual health, college fees, financial difficulties, mental health, and securing grants along with any other issues that relate to the welfare of a student. Throughout the year, I intend to run a number of campaigns. I hope to run a mini SHAG (Sexual Health and Guidance) campaign at the beginning of the term followed by a Mental Health Week and a full SHAG Week later on in the year. I want the students of ITT to have a memorable year and I will do my best to help create those memories for everyone.

Amazon Buys Jacobs Factory In Tallaght by padraig conlon ________________________ There was great news on the local jobs front last month when it was announced that online retail giant Amazon has acquired the former Jacob’s biscuit factory on Belgard Road. They plan on moving into the building, which has been empty since the biscuit factory closed in October 2008, this September in a development which will see hundreds of jobs created. Amazon already has one of its main data centres in Tallaght. The company purchased Tesco’s distribution centre on the Greenhills Road in December 2010, converting it into a data centre. It is also investing in a massive data centre at the former Shinko Microelectronics site which they bought last year. With seven data centres in Ireland, Amazon is one of the country’s biggest data-centre owners, along with Microsoft and Google. The retailer employs more than 1,400 staff in Ireland, across sites in Dublin and Cork. Last November it announced 300 new roles in Dublin, including data centre technicians, software engineers, security specialists and technical managers.

HSE Call For Irish Nurses & Midwives To Return Home by Genna patterson ____________________________ The Health Service Executive (HSE) has encouraged nurses and midwives working abroad to return to Ireland as part of a recruitment campaign. The HSE aims to attract up to 500 staff through the recruitment drive.

Amazon chief technology officer Werner Vogels said the company has been “an active contributor to the Dublin technology community for a decade and during this time, we have been extremely impressed with the creativity and strong technical talent available in the country”. “By expanding our presence in Dublin we will further accelerate the growth of some of the most exciting businesses we have at Amazon and support for our customers here in Europe and around the globe,” he added. The company employs more than 32,000 permanent staff in the European Union. Since establishing in Ireland in September 2004 it has invested more than €1.5 billion in the economy. Amazon’s 20th anniversary is on July 16 - its electronic commerce business is growing at an incredible rate. The company has over 154,000 employees worldwide (not including company warehouse contractors or seasonal workers), with established facilities throughout key global markets in North America, Europe, India and China.

A relocation package of €1,500 will be offered to successful nurses and midwives. Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation spokesperson David Hughes said, “The Irish health service badly needs nurses. We are very short of nurses now and we have been lobbying the HSE to have an international recruitment campaign to try and bring people back since the beginning of this year.” For more information visit www.nursinginireland.ie

IKEA introduce living wage by rachel lynch ________________________ Swedish furniture giant Ikea announced this month that it will introduce the living wage for all its Irish staff. Here in Ireland the living wage currently stands at €11.50 per hour,

which is almost €3 more than the minimum wage of €8.65. Ikea UK and Ireland HR manager Pernille Hagild told the Journal.ie that as a “valuesdriven organisation” the chain believed in “providing a meaningful wage to our co-workers that supports the cost of living no matter where they live”. Ikea currently only has one Irish store, in Ballymun in North County Dublin.

ITT Tallaght Students And Staff Print New Hand For Laois Boy by genna patterson ________________________ The students and staff of the Institute of Technology, Tallaght have 3D-printed a prosthetic hand for a ten-year old boy Josh McKenna. Josh is the first person in Ireland to receive a 3D-printed hand. Josh, from Portarlington, Co. Laois, suffered from a rare birth defect which left him with just a thumb on his right hand. His mother got in touch with the charity E-Noble, an American charity that provides 3D hands, who then connected her with Dublin-based designer Stephen Dignam who had gotten a 3D printer for a lighting project. Stephen then contacted his friend and fellow ITT lecturer Robbie O’Connor and the college printed

Josh a new hand. Josh was involved in the design and Josh’s mother Annette said that he loves his new hand and the other kids in school love it too. She said, “He’s brilliant with it. He’s super cool in school now because everybody wants one of these.” 3D printing is a process for making a physical object from a three-dimensional digital model, typically by laying down many successive thin layers of a material.

McGregor Crowned Champion at Historic UFC 189 by Jack Madden __________________________ Conor McGregor has been crowned interim UFC Featherweight Champion following a historic victory over Chad Mendes at UFC 189 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The SBG fighter climbed from the mat to a deafening reception in front of a partisan crowd following his stunning second round victory which saw him become the first European male to win a UFC title. Amid raucous support McGregor got off to a slow start, coming off second best throughout the first two rounds before connecting with a devastating left hand strike that downed Mendes for the first time in his illustrious career and allowed McGregor to finish the fight with seconds to spare in the second round. Cue scenes of mass hysteria as the crowd went wild and McGregor, who had been spine-tinglingly sung into the ring by Sinead O’Connor, sunk to his knees and cherished delivering the biggest triumph of his life. The unification title bout with Jose

Aldo now looks set to take place on January 2nd 2016 and McGregor will be licking his lips as he looks to conquer the division once and for all and become the UFC’s biggest star and most popular champion. The fight looks set to once again be in Las Vegas with UFC President Dana White telling MMA Junkie “There’s a thing where we told Conor that if he fought and beat Jose Aldo, we would let him defend at Croke Park in Ireland. When he and Jose fight, it will be here in Las Vegas.” On McGregor’s amazing victory Paddy Holohan told InTallaght’s Jack Madden, “It was absolutely amazing to see Conor take that belt! I don’t think Ireland realise how big this is. A European male has never ever won a UFC title. If you compared it to Katie Taylor’s gold medal it’s astronomical in comparison and that’s taking nothing away from Katie. This isn’t just a title for Ireland but it’s a title for the whole of Europe and he will only get better and better.”

that Vaughan Lee was an experienced fighter but said ,“We’ve been floating around the same division for a while even before the UFC came along and he’s a good guy with good striking and good floor game but he’s not Paddy Holohan!” With the win under his belt it’s time to look forward to UFC Dublin where Paddy is excited to appear exclaiming,“The UFC will not be coming to Dublin without putting me on the card! I’ve planned this year so I can fight in front of a home crowd. I fought in January. I fought in July. But come October it’s Dublin and I’ll be there representing in front of the people.”

Tallaght’s Paddy “The Hooligan” Holohan has secured back to back victories in the UFC following his dominant victory over Vaughan Lee at UFC Glasgow. The flyweight won in an impressive fashion as he took home all three rounds and was awarded a unanimous decision on scores of 30-27 across the board. Speaking to InTallaght’s Jack Madden before the fight Holohan admitted

Kilnamanagh Rockets Family Fun Day by kelly evans _______________________ The Kilnamanagh Rockets held their annual ‘Family Fun Day’ on Sunday July 19th at the Kilnamanagh Community Centre, Tallaght. There was a huge turnout of families at the event. Children didn’t have to be a member of the football teams or academy to join in on the fun and there was a bouncy castle, face painting, a BBQ, sumo wrestling and the Kilnamanagh Astro Park was open for the day. As for those who were members of the football teams and academy there was an awards presentation for their hard work throughout the football season. Colin Iveagh’s U11’s team’s hard work paid off as they became champions winning their football league.

Peter Kavanagh’s U11’s team did well resulting with them as runners up in the league and the cup and Stephen Kavanagh’s U15’s were runners up in their league this season. There were trophies presented to young boys and girls such as ‘Player of the Year’ and also ‘Most Improved’. All the boys and girls in the football academy each received a medal as well. Overall the Kilnamanagh Fun Day was a great day out for all. Add the Kilnamanagh Rockets on Facebook so you don’t miss next year’s event.

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTJACK

First in line and raring to go is local fighter and current Clan Wars and Akuma Lightweight Champion “The Irish Psycho” Tommy Martin from Old Bawn. Tommy spoke to InTallaght’s Jack Madden about his recent success and how he is plotting his ascent to UFC gold with the help of Coach John Kavanagh and his team at SBG. “I took my first martial arts class in Firhouse at a young age and I’ve never looked back. I was always into WWE and that type of thing but when I realised you could compete in MMA as a profession my mind was made up”, he explains. Knowing that the road ahead would be tough “The Psycho” knew he’d need a gym that would match his ambition and says, “I decided I’d join a club known as the best and with the same passion for MMA as myself and that club is SBG. I’ve been with SBG five years now and to say I’ve come a long way is an understatement.” As an amateur Tommy has dominated the lightweight division and currently holds both the Clan Wars and Akuma titles which he won in his last two fights and he admits,“I’m on a four fight winning streak and I’m ready to go pro. Nothing is going to stop me getting to top.” However, when he turns pro it’ll be the featherweight division he looks to conquer as he explains “I’m originally a featherweight but I’m trying to set

a precedent where amateurs aren’t cutting weight when they aren’t getting paid for it. I’m currently at a walking around weight of about 155 pounds but when you I go pro it’ll be 145 pounds. I’ll be fighting at it because as they say ‘making weight is making money’.” So, how long will it be before we can expect to see “The Psycho” among the ranks of the UFC elite? “I’m fortunate to be part of a club that has paved the way for Irish UFC fighters to make their way into the UFC. It took Conor about 12 fights to get into the UFC from being unknown while Cathal came through the Ultimate Fighter, but now it’s a bit different. When they know you’re from a good standard gym that has provided good fighters it cuts that figure in half.” The Irish Psycho definitely talks the talk and is ready to walk the walk and proclaims,“I’ll be in the UFC within two years. My first pro fight will be this year. Six wins and I’ll be knocking on that door. John and I already discussed it and he said my last fight would be the last at amateur and I won in an impressive fashion, so as soon as he’s back from Vegas we’ll get the ball rolling.” MMA fans and people of Tallaght take note. “The Irish Psycho” Tommy Martin is making his move so remember the name and check him out on Twitter @IrishPsychoMMA.

Delight For Duffer Signing by padraig conlon

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

____________________________ After all the speculation it was great to finally have it confirmed last month that Damien Duff had decided to sign for the Hoops.

Following the end of his spell in Australia with Melbourne City quite a few Irish clubs expressed their interest. The 36-year-old legend will be a Rovers player for the next 18 months in what must be one of the most exciting signings in the history of the League of Ireland. At the announcement of his move he claimed he was just as excited about signing for Rovers as he was when he joined Newcastle United and Chelsea earlier in his career. “It’s great to have it all finalised and now I’m just really looking forward to getting back on the pitch,” he said. “I am still out with a bit of an injury, but I should be ready to get back training fully before the end of the month. “After that I will be very keen to

get back playing regularly. “I have always said that I wanted to come back and play in Ireland and I am very grateful to Pat and the club for giving me the chance to do that… Not only do I get the chance to come back and play, but I get to do it at the biggest club in the country.” After making his debut for Blackburn Rovers in 1996 he went on to win two Premier League titles, 100 caps for Ireland, play in the World Cup 2002 and European Championships in 2012 and was also voted in the UEFA Team of the Year 2002. The Ballyboden man will be an amazing asset to the club, and not just from a playing point of view. His experience and leadership should be very beneficial to the younger Hoops and their development as footballers. On the pitch he still has a lot to offer and it will be exciting to see him compete for Rovers in grounds up and down the country. At the time of going to press he is completing his rehab from the knee injury that has kept him sidelined since March and it’s hoped he will be fit to make his debut in the home game with Pat’s on August 7th.

National Under-17 League Launched by padraig conlon

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

____________________________ With the new National Under17s league launched, young players will be given the best possible chance of making a career in the game.

The new SSE Airtricity National Under-17 League was launched at the end of last month at the FAI headquarters in Abbotstown by Roy Keane and FAI High Performance director Ruud Dokter. Cian Collins represented Rovers at the event. It is hoped this new league will be a vital stepping stone to the elite player pathway for the country’s best young players, giving them the opportunity to play at the highest level of football weekly. Roy Keane spoke very positively about this new development in Irish football. “It’s more of a stepping stone to the Under-19s or League of Ireland in the next few years,” he said. “I always felt when I was a player that I improved when I played with better players or against better players. It gives these lads the opportunity. But of course it is still going to be difficult to eventually try to get across to England. “The impression I get is people are always a bit quick to criticise the League of Ireland. From my own experience, I have got fond memories and it was a great stepping-stone for me having the year with Cobh. The physical challenge of playing League of Ireland was fantastic. I think people need to be a bit more positive.” Ruud Dokter was equally supportive. “The creation of the SSE Airtricity National U17 League provides young players in Ireland with a regular challenging environment designed to produce high quality players to progress for the future,” he said.

“This new league bridges the gap between schoolboy football, which runs up to U16 level, and the SSE Airtricity U19 League, which is now firmly established as the springboard for young talented players into adult football. “Many of the players who play in the SSE Airtricity National U17 League will have come through the FAI’s Emerging Talent Programme, and this will give them their first opportunity to play in a national league.” Rovers Under 17s will be managed in this inaugural season by former captain Aidan Price, with fellow ex-player Graham Gartland named as head coach. The management has assembled a very exciting squad who will be challenging for honours and we hope fans will get behind them and show them plenty of support. To watch interviews with Alan and Graham, plus some of the players, and get more info on the full squad please log on to the Shamrock Rovers website or Facebook page. The League kicks off on the week ending August 9th. The first season will be truncated, and will end in December in line with the SSE Airtricity U19 League. The 2016 season will kick-off in alignment with the SSE Airtricity Premier and First Division seasons. 22 teams will compete in the inaugural season, including 19 SSE Airtricity League clubs, with Galway United being the only League of Ireland side not to compete. The teams are divided into three sections with each team playing each other on a home and away basis. The final stage of the season will be familiar to the Under-19 league, with a knock out stage, comprising of the top two teams in each group facing each other in the quarter-finals, along with the best two third-placed sides. Rovers are in Section 2 along with Athlone Town, Longford Town, Salthill Devon, St Pat’s, Sligo and Mervue United. Their first match is away to Mervue on w/e August 9th and we wish the young Hoops the very best of luck for the coming season.

TRUE NORTH

InTallaght Magazine caught up with Danny North after his return to Rovers post injury. by padraig conlon @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

“I’m just so happy to be back.

I should have had a couple of goals but that’s probably down to a bit of rustiness. As long as I’m getting into the scoring positions though that’s the most important, if that stops then I’d be worried!” I’m chatting to Danny North a couple of days after his comeback match against Limerick following two months out with injury. After making a dream start to his Rovers career and scoring the winner against Pat’s in the opening game of the season, things took a turn for the worse. His pre season had gone really well with him scoring six goals as he settled into his new surroundings. Everything was looking rosy until he picked up a knee injury two games into the season, which meant him missing the next few games. Then came the news in May that he would require knee surgery and be out of action for four months. So how did he make it back so quick? “Originally when they did the scan they thought the tear was bigger,” says Danny, “ but once they got inside the knee thankfully it wasn’t as bad as they’d first thought which was a relief.” He continues, “It’s been a tough setback getting the injury so early into my career at Rovers and it’s been tough getting back to full fitness but I’m just so happy I’m fit again and looking forward to the rest of the season. Just going to take it game by game and look

to get back playing on a regular basis.” Danny says he has enjoyed watching the team from the sidelines as he recovered. “I think they’ve been good so far. Obviously losing in the cup to Pat’s was a set back, as was losing the Bohs game but we’re still in the race for the league title and I think we are more than capable of catching Dundalk. I definitely think we can do it, we’ve eleven points to claw back in fourteen games and we’ve got to play Dundalk twice, of course we’ve a chance. But there’s a few others in the mix as well. All the teams in the top 4/5 anyone is capable of beating any of the others on their day. We’ve all got to play each other as well, there’s a long way to go yet.” What has he made of Dundalk up to now? “I think they’re a very good side and what they do they do well; their tempo, pressing, closing down, set pieces, counter attacking,” he says. “They have their weaknesses as well though. They’re good but they’re no world beaters.” Danny has been very impressed with both the set up and his new teammates in these first few months of his Rovers career. “I’m really enjoying it here, everything about the club is excellent; the fans, the facilities, the staff and the players,” he says. “The only thing that’s been missing from the club in the last few years is the big trophies, hopefully we will put that right. We have such a brilliant squad.

I knew before I came here that they all had quality but I’ve been ever more impressed with them since I’ve got to work with them everyday. Brandon (Miele) has been the standout for me, he’s been top drawer for us, Hylo as well is another who’s really impressed. I thought he’d be a stopgap until Baz came back but he’s done well and deservedly kept his place. Mikey has been fantastic, he’s our top scorer. He’s come in after I got injured and done everything that’s been asked of him and more, he’s a very good player.” A lot of fans would like to see a North/Drennan partnership up top but with the formation Rovers have been using so far this season I ask him how likely is this to happen. “Well the manager played us together against Longford and he wasn’t very impressed, probably due to my poor performance. I didn’t do well that night which was probably down to the cartilage which went shortly after that,” he says. “Pat said to Mikey and myself at the start of the season that he wanted us to play together. I think the way the game has evolved 4-4-2 is dying out. The way we play is 4-3-3, or sometimes 4-5-1, and I see no reason to change that at the moment.” He says the signing of Damien Duff last month was the best news he’d heard in ages. “It’s massive for the club that such a quality player, one of the best this country has produced, has decided to come and play here,” he says. “When

we heard the initial speculation we were almost praying that he’d come to Rovers. When it got announced all the lads were absolutely buzzing! It’s going to be great for the fans, and the league as well, to have a player like Damien here for the next year and a bit. I can’t wait until he’s able to play, it’s going to be great.” The Europa League exit put a bit of a dampener on the summer as the players felt they missed a chance to make serious progress. “We were very disappointed because in the first leg there was nothing between the teams,” says Danny. “We created some great chances and to get beaten on the night by a soft penalty and then concede off a corner like we did for the second one was very frustrating because we felt we were just as good as them.” We discuss the ongoing problem in this country of getting more football fans to come and watch our national league and Danny feels that this isn’t going to go away anytime soon. “It’s hard to understand why more people don’t go to games but I feel the league are fighting a losing battle,” he says. “Next year English Premier League matches are going to be on TV on a Friday night so that could also have an effect on attendances here. I can’t see things improving in the short term. Maybe in the long-term if there are some major changes. Like for instance most of the grounds here leave a lot to be desired, there’s only about two or three that are good quality, if you want to attract more people then this would be one of the first things that would need to be worked on. But any effort to attract more fans has to come from everyone; all the clubs need to work together. A lot of the fans here are brilliant though and bring such passion to it with the posters and the banners and all the social media stuff they do. I love it over here. If I ever do go back to England it won’t be for football reasons. The only reason might be when my youngest starts school or to get back to be living close to my family again. I’m very happy in Ireland.”

He says that scoring his first goal for his hometown club Grimsby eight years ago left him close to tears because he loved the team so much. Now he’s a more seasoned pro does he still have that mad love for the game? “Yeah of course! It’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid and I still love it,” he says. “Sometimes, like with the injury over the last few months, it’s not the game you thought it was, but you can see when I celebrate after I score how much I still love it” Growing up his two football heroes were Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne and he has wildly contrasting memories of both players behaviour on separate visits to Grimsby’s home ground Blundell Park. “Shearer’s behaviour really disappointed me when he came with Newcastle to play Grimsby in a cup tie ten years ago. He’d been giving Grimsby skipper Justin Whittle – who’s the nicest guy you’ll ever meet – a bit all through the game, a few elbows and that and then started mouthing at him after another knock. Justin got him back and Shearer didn’t like it, complaining to the ref trying to get him in trouble. After the game he refused to sign autographs for the Grimsby fans and was very disrespectful towards the club.” Gazza on the other hand left a much better impression on the young Danny. “When he came to Blundell Park myself

and a few other youth team players were standing around and Gazza walks in and goes over to the vending machine. He turns around and asks if any of us have 20p, one of the lads gives it to him and Gazza goes, “Thanks pal, pulls out a £20 note and gives it to the lad who got it signed by Gazza and never spent it! The game doesn’t have characters like Gazza anymore. Everything’s in the media now and with camera phones everywhere you can’t get away with anything.” Anything like having ‘relations’ with the League of Ireland trophy in the privacy of the dressing room I ask and Danny laughs. (For anyone who doesn’t know the story Danny was pictured getting amorous with the league trophy the night Sligo won the league in 2013). “Yes like that, the only surprise about that was it took so long to get out there! I got a bit of stick about it, some people saying I showed a lack of respect but I was just in the moment because Sligo had gone 35 years without winning the title! My family weren’t impressed initially but they eventually saw the funny side of it!” All Rovers fans will be hoping Danny gets reacquainted with the League of Ireland trophy come the autumn. Maybe he could make a video next time round…
