THE EDITOR Welcome to our second August issue of InTallaght! Well it’s August and it feels like the summer is fast disappearing! It’s not long before the kids go back to school, and some already have. But don’t worry, we here at InTallaght have plenty of interesting features to keep your mind off it, so get a cuppa and enjoy all we have for you this month. First up, if you haven’t already heard (and you must have been hiding under a rock not to), Damien Duff signed for Shamrock Rovers. Our journalist Padraig got to talk to him before his debut for the club on Monday August 17th, something which all Hoops fans were looking forward to. The fans gave him an amazing welcome and rightly so, as he helped the team beat Cork City at Tallaght Stadium. Flick to page 16 for the full interview. We also spoke to outgoing TD Pat Rabbitte about the changes he has personally seen in Tallaght over the 33 year span of his political career. Pat tells us about how in 1982 Tallaght was “hell” with no infrastructure, sporting facilities or Square, a very different place than it is now thankfully. Pat also tell us about his proudest achievements and what he really thinks about politics in Ireland.

Meanwhile local Ed Mooney gives us a rundown of the recent third Tallafest, which took place on August 15th and was a huge success. Highlights of the festival were new additions; the bake-off, an outdoor ceilí and Woodlawn falconers with the impressive birds of prey. As usual we have all your latest movie, music and game reviews, as well as articles on the new Irish-invented payment service Stripe and European game convention Gamescom. With Amy Schumer coming to visit Ireland, and even having a sing-song in Grogans with Glen Hansard, we just had to review her comedy movie Trainwreck. And if you like sports we have a great interview with Leinster Rugby Nutritionist Daniel Davey and Irish Women’s Team soccer player Katie McCabe, as well as loads more local sports news and Rovers coverage. As always, we’d love to hear from you if you want InTallaght readers to know about something, or if you fancy getting published in our Writers’ Corner. Happy reading, _______________________________

Dublin Voted Second Friendliest City by genna patterson ________________________ Us Dubliners must be doing something right, as we were voted second friendliest city in US magazine Condé Nast Traveler. According to the publication the Irish capital “always has a smiling face to talk to” and one reader even described it as the “new Barecelona, without the sunstroke.” Unfortunately we couldn’t quite beat the winner, Sydney, but we think that has more to do with the weather than anything else! Tourism Ireland have welcomed the accolade and put it all down to our warm welcome and fondness of the craic. Dublin was also voted ‘favourite worldwide city’ at the Trazee awards in Orlando, Florida in August.

MEET jerome from kilnamanagh by PADRAIG CONLON
@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
____________________________ “I’m living in Kilnamanagh forty years, I’m originally from Sandymount, I moved to Tallaght when I got married.
Where I live all the roads are named after trees because it used to be all wood lands. I’ve seen a lot of changes in Tallaght during that time. From The Square to the college and all the new developments it has changed quite a bit, it’s a very vibrant place. It was a pity with the recession that a lot of the work stopped on redeveloping the area but things seem to be picking up a bit now, lets hope that continues, things can only get better. I’m retired, I used to be a porter in Ballyfermot College. I’m a widower, my wife is dead ten years, I live with my son and daughter. I’ve about over two hundred football jerseys from all over the world going back a few years but I follow Aston Villa and Sligo Rovers. How I started collecting them was there used to be a shop I went to on Georges Street called “The Soccer Shop” and Pat Seery, who owned it, used to get jerseys in from South America and all over Europe, of
teams you’ve never heard of. I’d wait till they were on sale and get them for about a tenner! I’d never buy the usual Man Utd/Liverpool etc and went for the more unusual jerseys. That’s how the collection started, it’s like a hobby, I would never sell them. A lot of people remark on it because I never wear the same jersey twice! I have a few favourites. I have a Down jersey that’s grey and red that people say is nice and some of the Villa ones, they’d be my favourites. I’ve been supporting Aston Villa since the FA Cup final in 1957 when they beat Manchester United 2-1. Sometimes I’ll be wearing a jersey and someone from the place the team is from will come up to me and ask me about it. Last week I was wearing a Sporting Lisbon one and a security guard from Lisbon came over to talk to me about the club. I’ve stopped collecting them now because I’ve run out of space to keep them, I’d have to build an extra room in the house! Anyway, jerseys today are more or less the same, they’re not as interesting as they used to be twenty or thirty years ago, I think they’ve run out if ideas! My father, who was an ex-paratrooper in the Second World War, used to train the Dublin-based players from the Sligo team so that’s how I started supporting them. They had a good spell over the last few years but things aren’t going so well now! Ah they’ll rise again, they always do!”

DAMIEN DUFF
Duffer plans to Keep on hooping Damien Duff made his long awaited debut for Shamrock Rovers this month, InTallaght spoke with him to see how he is settling in to life back home. by padraig conlon @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
The scoreboard shows Rovers 3 - Cork City 0. When Brandon Miele
kills the game as a contest with The Hoops third goal in the dying moments every eye in the stadium turns towards the Rovers bench. Duffer has spent the previous 20 minutes warming up and taking the applause off the Rovers faithful. Now is the time. Off comes the orange bib and everyone in the ground rises to their feet to greet one of the most popular Irish footballers of all time. The roar is electric as Duffer replaces Miele. This time it’s out with the young and in with the old as the veteran of almost 20 years gets stuck in straight away. At last, after all the talk, Duffer was back. Back from a serious injury, back playing football and back home for good. Two days prior to this I’m sitting in the Main Stand chatting to Damien Duff and seeing him in a Rovers kit is a surreal sight if I’m honest. This is one of the greatest players this country has ever produced, a man who has won two English Premier League medals, a century of Ireland caps, played in the World Cup and was voted Ireland’s player of the tournament. This calibre
of player just doesn’t come to play in the League of Ireland. The other thing that strikes me is how incredibly normal he is. “I just want to keep playing football. I’m still young at heart, I still love the game. I want to come back and win something but I don’t want to overstay my welcome either.” He can’t believe how quickly the time has flown since the summer of 1996 when he left this country aged just 17 to start the journey of a lifetime

damien duff
from a personal point of view i’m going to have to be at the top of my game
with a move to Blackburn Rovers. Now back in the place where he played the game as a boy, memories of his life before he became a footballing legend are all around. Even the Rovers training ground transports him back to the past. “Training at the AUL every day brings back memories because that’s where it all started for me with the underage national team 21 years ago. It was such an exciting time in my life but I am just as excited now, I really am and I really mean that.” The night before we meet he was on the bench for the trip to Longford Town. The excitement was still there, the anticipation was still there, he was taking it all in. “I still had the butterflies. I haven’t played in seven months, and I’m there still itching to get on. That’s probably a little bit of nerves as well to see how it goes and how my body holds up,” he says. He has been around the squad for the past two months and his early impressions of the league have been good. “From what I’ve seen so far I’ve
18 // #intallaght / TWEET US
been impressed. From a personal point of view I’m going to have to be at the top of my game to do the business on the pitch. I’d taped about four or five of the Soccer Republic programmes and so watched them all together last week just in case I came on against Longford.” This attention to detail and outstanding professionalism have been evident throughout his career. When he travelled with the squad to Norway for the second leg of the Europa League clash he brought his physio so he wouldn’t waste any time in his rehabilitation from the ankle injury that has kept him sidelined since March and prematurely ended his spell with Melbourne City.
AGE & INJURY
At his age (36) did he think his career was over after damaging his ankle so severely? “It does cross you’re mind when you get to this age but I’d always said I wanted to come home and finish my career in Ireland so that drove me on to overcome it. I’m still putting my body through the mill!” The decision to sign for Rovers was a “no brainer.” He has settled in well, impressed with the club set up, his new teammates and manager. “Rovers are the biggest club in Ireland with the best manager. It’s very exciting to be playing for them but look, the club’s more important than me. Personally I’d love to finish my career by winning the league here. They should be challenging every year and listen, it’s not over this season, I know we’ve given ourselves an uphill task but if you win every game you’ll be there or thereabouts. Once we get a few more back from injury and suspension, our strongest team will
have us there or thereabouts at the top.” His return from injury comes the same week his team mate Keith Fahey is forced to retire due to injury. “Keith is a massive loss,” he says.” There are great footballers in the league and Keith was another one of them. He scored an important goal for Ireland in Armenia a few years ago which sent us on our way to the European Championships. And I remember how disappointed he was then to miss the tournament through injury. I saw Keith the other day downstairs in the office when he was finalising all his paperwork. It was hard
talking to him as it’s a disappointing time in any player’s career. He had a good crack at it and there were a few more years in him. He was a proper footballer with a proper football brain.” We discuss the feelgood factor that his decision to come home has generated in the League of Ireland, and not just among Rovers fans. This trend of ex-Irish internationals coming home to play in the league over the last few years has been fascinating. Does he think any more of his ex colleagues will follow his lead? “I couldn’t possibly comment. I don’t know, I suppose it
comes down to how much you love the game. I’ve come home to settle here with my family but a lot of explayers retire and live in England so I don’t know about the rest of the lads out there.” Any chance we could see him reunited with his good friend Robbie Keane in Tallaght Stadium any time soon?! “(Laughs) Actually he was one of the first people to contact me after I signed, he sent me a text saying “Welcome to Tallaght!” Robbie is a hero of mine for staying on for another four years after me. He’s still got that pure
love of the game and with Robbie the money has never changed him or his desire and that is the reason he is one of the greatest.” We talk about how it is getting even harder for young Irish players to get a chance with the bigger English clubs which makes it even more important to have a strong League of Ireland. “You want your young players coming through and developing and hopefully playing for the national team one day and obviously with the Under 17 and Under 19 league that’s going to help. Maybe it is better for young players
august 2015 //
// 19
damien duff to stay here, gain experience in the Airtricity League rather than going away and training with the youth team over in England,” he says. Since retiring from the national team after the Euros in 2012 he hasn’t been back to watch a game live at the Aviva. Bigger priorities occupy his time now. “I have my two young kids so I’d rather be playing with them. I’m usually putting them to bed or reading them stories when the Ireland games are kicking off.” He thinks our chances of qualifying for France are “slim.” “You can be as positive as you want but I don’t think it’s looking great,” he says. “People say we’ve a nice draw for the World Cup but I’m not quite sure about that. I still think it’s very tricky so tough times ahead.”
COACHING CAPABILITIES
He has started taking his badges and will coach the Rovers Under 15’s as part of his B Licence. He has played for some of the greatest managers of the modern era, which of them impressed him the most? “Kenny Dalglish, Roy Hodgson is a brilliant coach, Mourinho, Trappatoni. Now I’m here at Rovers the gaffer Pat Fenlon has made a big impression on me already so I can’t wait to get out on the pitch and start doing the business for him.” I ask him about his old manager Mourinho and his carry-on with the club doctor and physio earlier in the week. “I think that story has caught
Every penny I get is going to charity. I don’t want a penny. I thought it’d be something nice to do because I just want to play football. 20 // #intallaght / TWEET US
everyone’s attention and his behaviour is a bit surprising. I don’t think he has come out of this in the greatest light. But he’s never usually far off the mark, so maybe there’s something going on behind closed doors. That would be the thing I’m looking at.” Management is something he’d like to “throw his hand at” in the future and with the wealth of experience he’s garnered working with such giants of the game, aligned with his dedication to researching and studying football, the odds should be stacked very much in his favour. When I put this to him he brushes it aside with his renowned modesty. “Ah look we’ll see. I’m a long way from being qualified to manage, maybe four or five years so it’s a good bit away yet.” Prior to his four-year-old son Woody being born Damien and his wife Elaine discovered their unborn boy had a hole in his heart. The news hit Duff hard and he says he cried everyday for the two months before his son arrived. He had an operation at six months in Great Ormond Street and after that his check ups took place in Ireland. Thankfully Woody’s problem was sorted but Duff will always be grateful. In an unprecedented move in Irish football he announced that all income he earns at Rovers will be donated to two charities close to his heart, Temple Street Hospital and Heart Children, for whom he is an ambassador. “Every penny I get is going to charity,” he says. “I don’t want a penny. I thought it’d be something
nice to do because I just want to play football. Any bonuses, incentives, appearance money or whatever is all going to those two charities, 50-50. I don’t want to make a big story out of it, though.” He, his wife and two children are settling in well to their new life in Ireland. They bought a house in Wicklow a couple of years ago with the intention of coming home. “My wife is from Bray, Wicklow and I’m from Ballyboden so we’re back to where the heart is. I want my kids to grow up Irish and know and play with their Irish cousins and be Irish. It’s a no brainer to be honest. It’s great to be home and and in a way it’s like we were never away.” Every Rovers fan is delighted Damien has decided to come and finish his career with The Hoops. Whatever happens over the next year and a half will mean just as much to Duffer as winning the Premier League or playing in the World Cup. It is a wonderful thing to see a footballer who has achieved so much in the game still get as excited about it as a 17-year-old kid. Duffer is that extremely rare Irishman, one who didn’t waste his talents and we hope he really enjoys the final seasons of a career that every Irish football fan has enjoyed watching. One of the most exciting players we’ve ever produced is going to play in the League of Ireland and for that we should be very thankful.

“In November 1982 Tallaght was hell, everyone will tell you that.
There was no Square, no hospital, no infrastructure, no sporting facilities, women pushing prams across fields. It was an entirely different place to what it is today.” I’m in Leinster House, sitting across from Pat Rabbitte as he reminisces on what the local area was like when he began his political career. His announcement last month that he would not contest the next general election is the reason we are having this chat. InTallaght Magazine has always been apolitical and we have never promoted any party or politician. Whether you are a supporter or not, it can’t be denied that Pat Rabbitte has had an influence in the shaping and development of this community over the last three decades. During that time he rose to prominence in national politics. He has held the role of leader of the Labour Party, Minister for Energy, Communications and Natural Resources and served on various committees. With a general election looming he has decided to call it quits. So why has he decided that now is the time?
22 // #intallaght / TWEET US
“I contested my first General Election in November 1982, 33 years ago, so I feel I have done my stint. I will be 67 when the next Dáil convenes and do I want to be in Dáil Eireann in my 70’s? The honest answer to that is I don’t.” In his political life he has grown up with Tallaght and seen the creation of a new community. From the dark days of the early 80’s to the present day Tallaght has been transformed. “It’s a credit to the people of the community that it has overcome such adversity,” he says. “The people of Dublin South West have been very loyal and have elected me at six consecutive General Elections and I have done my best to represent them. I have given it whatever I had and it’s been a privilege.” In his years of public service in this area I ask him what his proudest achievement is? “I was chairman of the old Dublin County Council and during that time we organised the rezoning of Citywest and the creation of it as a modern, prestigious, leading edge business park. It’s creation opened up possibilities in terms of employment and housing. The infrastructure of this
area has also improved immensely, the Luas is a brilliant service and this would also be something I’m proud of. Back in the 80’s every year we had would have a battle with Dublin bus over things you’d take for granted nowadays like routes, shelters etc.” And what would be his biggest regret? “I would have to say the drugs culture. When I started in politics a lot of the local families were at the early stage and the kids were two or three years old. Now a lot of that generation are also caught up with drugs as well and it’s really painful to see how the drug culture has got a grip on Dublin and the damage it continues to cause. I served on a Drugs Taskforce in 1996 and the problem is even worse today.” I put it to him that maybe the only way forward is decriminalisation of all drugs. “I thought about that when I was on the Task Force and I came down against it. I don’t think it is doable for an EU member state on its own. If it were a pan European-wide approach then maybe, but if we were to go alone I fear Dublin would invite drug tourism which I don’t think we’d be able to cope with. I don’t think that is the solution.”
I contested my first General Election in November 1982, 33 years ago, so I feel I have done my stint.
POLITICAL PEERS
In the last few years we have seen the rise in popularity of independent politicians and on the very day we meet comes the news that once again they’re up in the polls. This swing away from the political parties is obviously not something he agrees with. “There are two kinds of politicians,” he says, “those who want to do things and those who want to say things and l think most of them don’t have anything positive or constructive to offer. “Of course people are angry, and quite properly angry about what has happened. We had the biggest crash in 25 years and you don’t go through something like that without people being affected so it’s perfectly understandable that they’d be annoyed.” But surely, I ask, the government parties have only themselves to blame if the electorate are angry? He doesn’t agree. “I think more and more people are beginning to understand as they watch the Greek drama unfold that the Labour party here in Ireland played its part in pulling us back from the brink and avoiding the chaos and misery and hardship that is now the situation in
Athens and in Greece. Therefore I think some people are beginning to reflect and take stock,” he says. “We have 100,000 additional people back at work. We did pull the country back from the brink. We were facing desperate circumstances in 2011, we had to do things that a Labour Party would never want to do but we have rectified the public finances and economic recovery has set in.” We get onto the topic of the explosion of anti-authority feeling in the country and we both agree it’s at an unprecedented level. While he says nobody wants to see a return to the days of deference to politicians and priests he feels it has gone too much the other way. “I don’t think it’s healthy to society to have such levels of hatred towards people in public life. The level of abuse is vile.” Coincidentally he tells me that just before we met he had been in contact with his colleague Senator Lorraine Higgins over threats she had received on Twitter. “I’ve just been looking at the stuff that has been posted on her social media networks and I am appalled. It contained threats on her life and abuse which is anti-woman and anti-semitic. Thankfully it is only the minority who engage in this type of disgusting abuse but it is still a serious cause for concern.” Having started out himself in student politics we discuss young people’s apathy with politics and what, if anything, can be done to arrest this. “I think the past era of corruption and then the financial crash has damaged the image of politics but when we had the marriage equality referendum we got an unprecedented turnout from young people which shows that if the issue grabs their attention they’re enthused. I think there ought to be more politics done in the school curriculum because at the end of the day what is the alternative if nobody is interested in politics?” Throughout his time in Dáil Éireann he was involved in some very memorable debates and always came across as someone you wouldn’t want to get into a war of words with. Was this
something he enjoyed or just another part of the “grind” of politics? “Oh yeah I always enjoyed that part of the job! Every time you go through the gates of Dáil Éireann is a privilege. It’s a great parliament. It’s not for me to judge how well I did, that’s for others.” Of all the people he went toe to toe with in the Dáil who stands out as a tough opponent? “Charles Haughey was a formidable politician and parliamentarian when I first became a TD and would be someone who stood out. He didn’t always use his gifts and talents though in the right way but he was a brilliant politician.” In 30 years as a member of The House it is the investigative work he put in on The DIRT Inquiry in the late 90’s that brings him the most satisfaction. “I remember fondly the work I did on that. The inquiry cost a million euro but recouped more than one billion for the Exchequer in taxes evaded. That is something I’m very proud of.” He tells me that the doom and gloom that beset the government when they took over in 2011 was unprecedented. The country was on its knees and the Irish people don’t really know exactly how dire the situation was at the time. “I don’t believe that story has been adequately written up yet, for various reasons. Some of it has come out but not the whole story. The way the country was being run in 2010 was shocking. The state was dysfunctional, the outgoing Fianna Fáil Government had been in disintegration and dysfunction for five or six months before it collapsed. The state couldn’t go to the markets and we were borrowing money to pay for basic social services.” I finish up by asking him if he will miss it all and what his plans for the future are. “Not right now no but I wonder will I change my mind in September! The only future that I have planned at the moment is that I will continue to work for the people of Dublin South West until the next election. We’ll see what the future brings. Everyone keeps telling me that 67 is not old but it doesn’t feel like that to me!”

tallafest 2015
Tallafest was a huge success this year, the third annual local free festival in Tallaght. Festival organiser Tara de Buitlear
said that this year had a wider range of activities than previous years and featured some really different events including “the festival beats of Sonna Samba, a guard of honour from Harley bikes, the American Muscle cars, Robot ted, the bake-off, an outdoor ceilí and Woodlawn falconers with the impressive birds of prey. A huge thanks to TCC committee members, volunteers and sponsors for making it possible.”
This year we are featuring the blog of local man Ed Mooney who attended the event:
I first heard about the Tallafest as a result of the two articles I did on St. Colmcille’s Well and Ballymount Castle for the Tallaght Echo. In fact it was a member of Tallaght Community Council and a fellow photographer Declan Corrigan who tipped me off about the event. Two particular events were of great interest to me. The first concerned a nature walk around the Priory Gardens. I have being trying to arrange access to these hidden gardens ever since I wrote about Tallaght Castle back in 2013. The main reason for my interest here was that they were said to contain a Bullaun Stone. As part of the festival the Tower of St. Maelruan’s was to be opened to the public.
24 // #intallaght / TWEET US
So things kicked off at about midday on the grounds of the priory; there were the usual stalls selling their wares along with ice cream vans and food vendors, but the first thing of interest for me was the Birds of Prey display by the lovely folks of Woodlands Falconry who were ever so hospitable. I was invited into the enclosed display area and got some really cool shots and learned so much about the stunning birds, many of which are only recently being reintroduced into the wild in Ireland. Over at the main stage the official opening was held with a grand release of balloons and a cracking performance from Sonna Samba. Amongst the crowd I spotted Stuart and Kevin from the Minions getting up to their usual antics. There was a fine display of really cool cars and motor cycles. Greenhill’s Archery had a display and I just had to put the camera aside and have a go. Surprisingly, it’s been about ten years since I have fired a bow and my grouping was still pretty damn good. There were also some great displays from the local rugby and Taekwondo clubs and even the local Scouts had a display with marshmallows getting toasted on the fire. I took interest in a particular stall which had a number of interesting medieval weapons and armour on display. By 2 pm it was time for the nature walk with Christopher Moriarty and we were led into the inner sanctum of the Priory and into the hidden gardens to
the rear. It was a really interesting walk around the almost secret garden, which was a nice mix of history and nature. And I finally found my elusive Bullaun stone. There was so much more going on at the festival than I got to shoot on the day, but my primary concern was to ensure that I got my Priory garden and Maelruan’s Tower in the bag that I skipped over quite a bit. I should probably have brought the kids along as they would have had a ball, but they were off with their Mum and Granddad for the day. I was born and raised in Tallaght so it was great to see such a brilliantly organised festival which really showed off the community spirit of area. It’s a shame it gets so much negative attention in the media sometimes. And so moving on I left the grounds of the priory and headed up the road to the grounds of St. Maelruan’s Church, in order to complete my final goal of the day, and climb the Tower. About half way up, tragedy struck and the shutter on my camera seized up, so I had to resort to using my HTC smart phone to capture the remaining shots. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event. For more from Ed visit his blog: edmooneyphoto.wordpress.com Photos by Ed Mooney, Kelly Evans and Pat Hardiman.

square anniversary ARIEL VIEW OF TALLAGHT BEFORE THE SQUARE CONSTRUCTION STARTED
1990 - 1994
by colm o’muirí
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
With The Square celebrating 25 years in existence this year we here at InTallaght decided to look at some of the biggest stories and changes in Tallaght and Ireland during that time. In this, the first of three features we
will be looking at some of the stories and events that happened in Tallaght during those first five years. On October 23rd 1990 Ireland’s largest shopping centre at the time was officially opened by the Taoiseach of Ireland Mr Charles Haughey. Others who were in attendance were Gay Byrne, who hosted his 2FM radio show from the Crow’s Nest in the shopping centre, as well as Mary Harney, Pat Rabbitte and the Fine Gael leader at the time Alan Dukes. There was a fantastic atmosphere as the centre
28 // #intallaght / TWEET US
was opened to the 45,000 people in attendance who wanted to get a look inside Ireland’s best shopping centre. Dunnes Stores and McDonald’s, who are still in The Square today, were just two of the shops that were in the centre along with many others such as Roches Stores, A-Wear and of course the 12 screen cinema which opened some months later. Such was the excitement of the people of Tallaght and Ireland for this new shopping centre that there was a release of a song to commemorate it. In October 1990 a Dublin rock band called Achill released their song “The Square” – the single lasted two weeks in the Irish charts with the song peaking at number 26. Following the opening of The Square would see many new developments over the next 25 years in Tallaght; the first of which was the opening of a new Institute of Technology. Just two years after the opening of The Square the Regional Technical College, Tallaght opened its doors.
Since opening it has undergone some name changes, however it is now called Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT). In October 1993 construction began on Tallaght hospital, having began planning back in 1981. The National Basketball Arena was opened in January 1993 by An Taoiseach Albert Reynolds and since then it has undergone a name change and the 3,000 capacity venue is now called The Arena. The South Dublin County Council came into existence back in January 1994. The premises of the County council was and still is in Tallaght. In December of the same year the county library is opened. Tallaght has grown over the years and in this the first part of our series we have seen two of the major reasons why this has happened, The Square and IT Tallaght. The Square was only the beginning of the resurgence of Tallaght and over the 25 years it has been in existence Tallaght has grown considerably.

TOUR DE FRANCE PASSING THROUGH TALLAGHT IN 1998
by colm o’muirí
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
In 1996 the population of Tallaght had decreased to 61,611 from the previous census in 1991 when the population was 62,570. In this half decade the Theatre
came to Tallaght when in May of 1997 the 130 seater opened its doors in Kilnamanagh, just behind the Cuckoo’s Nest pub. It was only a few years later when the Civic Theatre was officially opened in March 1999. The man responsible for the Civic Theatre in Tallaght, and the other two in Blanchardstown and Dun Laoghaire, was the then Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht and current Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D. Higgins. The play that opened the Theatre was Howie the Rookie, written by talented Tallaght man Mark O’Rowe, who has also written films such as Intermission and Perrier’s Bounty. In 1997 one of Tallaght’s most famous sons began lighting up the soccer world when he made his Wolverhampton Wanderers debut; Robbie Keane scored 24 goals in 73 appearances. Mick McCarthy gave him his Ireland debut against the Czech
Republic before scoring a hat trick against Malta in October the same year. Keane’s performances attracted the interest of Premier League club Coventry who paid £6 million for the talented Fettercairn man. Another Tallaght native Richard Dunne also made an impact in the footballing world when in 1997, as a fresh faced 17-year-old he made his premier league debut for Everton. In 1998 all of Ireland went cyclingcrazy when the Tour de France blazed through these isles between July 11th and 13th. It was day two on July 12th when the riders roared through Tallaght, and most of Dublin, before finishing in the Phoenix Park. This was also the year when the doping within the sport became public knowledge. On the 21st of June 1998 Tallaght Hospital opened its doors and accepted its first patients, seventeen years after planning for the building began in
1981. In May of 1998 the government gave the green light for a new rail transit system called the Luas which begins/ends outside The Square on its red line. During these years The Square saw some new tenants enter the fray with the Perfume Shop first leasing its shop in November 1995 while the Carphone Warehouse began leasing in 1999, and both are still there today. In the next edition we will be looking at 2000-2004 when a certain line mentioned in this edition connected Tallaght with the city centre. We will also be looking at when a particular Tallaght man blew the Germans away in Ibaraki and when Ireland hosted a worldwide special event in 2003. Still to come in future editions: 2000-2004, 2005-2009, 2010-2015 PHASE ONE OF TALLAGHT INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

debs season by Dee Maher
________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTDEE
It’s that time of year again where everyone starts to panic!! Girls worried in case someone has the same dress as them, guys leaving their suits until last minute, but don’t worry ‘Debs by Debenhams’ will have you sorted in no time at all. Whether it’s the classic Hollywood style, or the red carpet sparkle Debenhams has every sort of colour, style and fabric you could want. Girls don’t be afraid to go big and bright with your choice, most people only get to go to one debs so make the most of it! But be careful not to overdo it! You want to look like the best version of you possible, not a Christmas decoration! As far as the guys go, they’ll look well in anything. Navys and browns or tans are always
36 // #THESQTALLAGHT
a winner, as well as greys and charcoal. Black is nice but a bit old school; if you have your black suit already don’t worry, mix it up with a bright shirt, and don’t be afraid to ACCESSORISE! Cuff links, dicky bows, pocket squares and braces are all the rage! You will not only look dapper and sharp but the ladies will love it! Coordinating: as far as coordinating goes, don’t be afraid to try it a little. If the girl is wearing pink it can look nice for a guy to wear a shirt or tie in the same shade. Likewise the girl can complement the guy by coordinating her clutch or shoes to his colour scheme. Even a small bit of coordinating can tie the two outfits together very nicely. Finally a tip for all the guys, when buying the corsage – don’t go too tacky! If you don’t know the colour of her ‘gúna’ go for something nice and neutral. You can’t go wrong with cream or beiges. Last but not least, my biggest tip for the night is to enjoy it and be sensible. You deserve it class of 2015!!!!

FANTASTIC FOUR by genna patterson @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
___________________________ Yet Another Reboot Of The Fantastic Four.
I’m not sure how fantastic the four can ever be considering the cheesiness of their name, but nonetheless the Marvel superheros have been rebooted once again. Ten years on from the Jessica Alba/Chris Evans edition, 20th Century Fox have gone back to the roots of the story. The result is a lot less of a ‘sugary’ movie and there are almost no quips at all, which doesn’t make it better or worse, it’s just different. This time the story sees the four teleporting into another dimension where they gain their powers, rather than hit by a space storm like in the 2005 movie. A lot of the film focuses on how they build the teleportation device, both created by Victor (Toby Kebbell) but successfully followed through by Reed (Miles Teller). Just when you think that you’ve spent a lot of time watching a science experiment montage, the four finally get their powers after a foolhardy expedition to another dimension they know absolutely nothing about. Fantastic Four is an ok, paint-bynumbers movie, and doesn’t quite have the self awareness of its own ridiculousness like all of The Avengers movies, bar one moment at the end. Sadly, that seems to be the only way an audience will forgive the fantastical powers and abilities, and most especially, superhero names. Fantastic Four instead plays it safe and as such delivers a mediocre movie hardly worth remaking.

TRAINWRECK by genna patterson
__________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
Finally a rom-com without a pathetic female.
If you haven’t heard of Amy Schumer yet, you will certainly after this movie! Trainwreck is an antithesis of a rom-com, one that turns the genre on its head and wholeheartedly succeeds. Amy is a successful journalist for a men’s magazine and lives her life very much like how we’ve come to think and expect single males to. She drinks, smokes weed and sleeps around, and when the men want something more, she shuts it down. She doesn’t want a relationship and thinks it’s weird when a guy calls after a one-night stand. Of course, like every rom-com (as it is still a rom-com) she meets someone who makes her question her life premise of “Monogamy isn’t realistic”. Amy gets sent by her boss
(a hilarious Tilda Swinton as you’ve never seen her before) to interview sports surgeon Aaron Connors (SNL’s Bill Hader), who, after a one-nightstand, asks to see her again and start dating. Amy at first resists, but then really grows to like Aaron and so must come to terms that her entire idea about relationships may actually be wrong. Amy Schumer both wrote and starred in this movie, so if you are a fan of her sketch comedy in Inside Amy Schumer, and even if you’re not, you’ll enjoy this comedy. It is directed by Judd Apatow of Knocked Up and 40 Year Old Virgin fame, and it has the same ad-libbing feel to the dialogue as those movies. This is a movie that will have you laughing out loud and yet surprisingly dabbing your eyes too, as of course, despite it’s more realistic approach to a romcom, it likes to make its audience happy. A must-watch and perfect for a date night!

Quentin is clearly

in love with Margo, but will the girl who stole his heart have the same feelings for him? Will he ever find her again? If The Fault in Our Stars is your cup of tea, well then Paper Towns was made for you. You won’t shed as many tears but the romantic storyline will certainly keep you entertained. This film is one the whole family can enjoy and I’m sure teenage girls will just love it!

Mistress America by genna patterson
___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
An odd-ball comedy about finding your way. Mistress America
is one of those strange movies that is almost too intelligent for its own good. It studies human behaviour and has many underlying messages coated in odd-ball comedy. Just like life, there are comedic moments when things are just funny, but not necessarily laugh-outloud funny. Tracy (Lola Kirke) is a lonely college freshman in New York, who is finding it difficult to make friends. However, when her mother suggests she calls her 30-year-old soon-tobe sister-in-law Brooke (Greta Gerwig) things start to get a lot more exciting for Tracy. Brooke is self-involved, a partygirl and a self-starting entrepreneur, and Tracy
becomes fascinated by her. The movie follows Tracy’s interest with Brooke as she tries to get funding for her restaurant Mom’s, despite financiers pulling out last minute. Cue a road trip to visit her ex-best friend and her rich ex-fiancé for funding. It soon becomes clear that Tracy is studying Brooke for her own gains, to write stories about her in order to be accepted into an exclusive writing club at her college. While Tracy seems to think of Brooke as a subject, before she knows it, she actually grows to like her. Mistress America is an interesting film, and definitely keeps you entertained, but you will have to pay full attention. At times, it has essences of Woody Allen, but that aside it’s a nice evening’s entertainment, with big ideas. Bring your thinking cap as you’ll be thinking about this one for days afterwards.

Did you enjoy Marley and Me? Well then prepare yourself for another tearjerker.
Kyle Wincott is a U.S. Marine who has developed a close bond with his service dog Max who he has trained from when he was a puppy. On a patrol in Afghanistan Kyle is killed and Max is too traumatized to remain in service so returns home. When Max becomes unresponsive and erratic the Marines have no option but to put him down, that is until Kyle’s family turn up to adopt the dog. As soon as Max sees Kyle’s teenage brother Justin he begins to respond to his commands, but Josh has no interest in the dog. The family take him home and it is during this time they begin to see just why their son/brother had
so much love for the dog. As time goes on we start to realise that all is not what it seemed in Afghanistan when Kyle died. With the help of a dog-savvy friend, Justin and Max set out to unravel the mystery surrounding Kyle’s death. Max will see you fill up with emotion, about a dog who has been left utterly devastated by his closest friend’s death and soon sparks up a bond that will see him become protector again. This is a feel good film the whole family will enjoy!
centers on U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) agents Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill), an American and Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer, a very proud Russian. The pair who have a mutual dislike for one another, have reluctantly teamed up on a mission to help stop a mysterious international criminal organization, who look set on producing a deadly nuclear weapon. The only lead the two have is Gaby Teller who also has her own motives, one of
which is to find her father who vanished many years ago. Can the trio prevent a worldwide catastrophe? Or will romance and the odd murder hinder their mission? From the trailer I wasn’t blown away, I thought a film with a backdrop of the Cold War would be of little interest to me and the mention of the odd subtitle gave me more reason to doubt. I was wrong, I really enjoyed this film, its storyline grips you instantly. It had all the ingredients of a Bond film, but one I actually would like! A definite must-see!

Giant Minion Floating In Santry by rachel lynch ________________________ Ed Sheeran Plays Ronan Keating’s Wedding by Genna patterson ____________________________ Only a month after his sell-out gigs at Croke Park, Ed Sheeran gave a surprise performance at Ronan Keating and Storm Uechtritz’s wedding in Edinburgh. The Give Me Love singer not only sang his own songs, but also joined Ronan on stage with Boyzone members Keith Duffy and Shane Lynch. Ronan has reportedly said that he wished his bandmate Stephen Gately could have been in attendance. Stephen sadly died in Spain in October 2009.
Apple Music Sign Up 11 Million New Users by GENNA PATTERSON ________________________ Apple Music’s new streaming service has gained over 11 million members during its free three month trial period. Launched on June 30th, the service is the only streaming service not to offer a free on-demand model. After the trial period, customers will have the option to pay a monthly subscription fee. The company came under scrutiny when they said they weren’t going to pay artists during the trial, however Taylor Swift removed her music and the company agreed to change its policy.

Traffic was brought to a halt in Santry at the beginning of the month by a giant floating Minion. Motorists on the North side of Dublin couldn’t believe what they were seeing when the giant air-filled Minion flew loose of its restraints and tumbled onto the Old Swords Road. Images and videos began to surface online of the Minion and in a matter of hours the story was
covered by a number of media outlets throughout the world. Gardaí had to be called, and the air was let out of the inflatable and removed from the road so that cars could pass again. Luckily, despite the Minion’s best efforts to cause havoc, no one was injured.
Lexus Release Hoverboard by rachel lynch ________________________ Trainwreck Red Carpet Dublin’s savoy by Rachel Lynch ____________________________ There was great excitement here in the capital this month with the premier of the new movie Trainwreck. Actress Amy Schumer led an all-star cast to the Savoy Cinema on O’Connell Street including Bill Hader (SNL) and Vanessa Bayer (SNL) as well as director Judd Apatow (Knocked Up). Schumer even happened to crash a wedding earlier that afternoon alongside Glen Hansard for a singsong in pub Grogans on South William Street. They sang The Auld Triangle together, serenading newlyweds Eithne and J.P. At the premiere Amy told press that she would love to move to Ireland as she had enjoyed herself so much while on the short visit.
For fans of Back to the Future, 2015 could indeed be the year we see an actual hoverboard in action. Lexus have announced that they have created the technology to finally build a hoverboard, although the final release date is unknown to those of us without a time machine. However, the company plans on unveiling more information with their hype-building hoverboard teaser videos. Called the Slide, the hoverboard by Lexus has yet to be seen in action. It may seem quite strange for a car company to spend money on what is little more than a toy but they have the money and facilities to achieve it, and know that fans of the movie will likely shell out to achieve their dream of trying one out.
Shane Filan To Release New Solo Album in September by Genna patterson ____________________________ Westlife singer-songwriter Shane Filan has announced a new deal with Warners to release his new solo album Right Here on September 25th. Filan co-wrote almost 50 songs, the best of which make up two-thirds of Right Here. The remaining tracks were chosen from approximately 200 submissions that he’d shortlisted from other writers. “It’s a great example of where I want my music to be at,” Filan says of his lead single Me and the Moon. “It’s very current, it’s quite pop but there’s a bit of an edge to it, and it’s a big song vocally. What I love about it is that it has a universal meaning. It’s about losing
someone you love, but it could be that you’ve lost a relationship, or someone has passed away, or you could be miles away from your loved ones on the other side of the world. I can really relate to it in that sense.” The album was recorded primarily in London and Denmark, with key collaborators including the Ivor Novello winner Cutfather, Jez Ashurst (Will Young, Gabrielle Aplin), Jon Maguire (Union J’s Beautiful Life) and Tre JeanMarie (Andrea Faustin).

MUSIC
Compton doesn’t have the same breathtaking power of his previous work
dr dre compton by padraig conlon
___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
To today’s younger music fans Dr Dre is probably known as a designer of not very good, overpriced head phones, but to us older ones he’s still the main man from NWA, one of the most important rap groups of the 80’s.
After they broke up in the early 90’s he went out on his own to become the best rap producer of all time, discovering people like Snoop Dogg and Eminem and creating two outstanding solo albums, The Chronic (1994) and 2001 (1999). Having been a fan since his NWA days I was really looking forward to hearing Compton, his first solo work in 16 years, and an album he himself has declared his “grand finale.” Sales of his crappy headphones have made him a billionaire so he hasn’t done this album for the money. In fact prior to Compton’s release he announced he’d be donating all royalties from the album to fund a performing arts centre in his hometown. It’s a brilliant piece of PR for Apple Music streaming service,
48 // #intallaght / TWEET US
which is currently the only place you can get it. Dre has always relied on other rappers for inspiration and his own genius is in mining their talent, rearranging it and bringing out the very best in them. On Compton he’s taken that same approach and vocally he spends most of the album on the sidelines in favor of other vocalists. The first raps we hear on the album are delivered by King Mez, who also appears to have helped Dre with most of his song writing. There are even two tracks where he vocally doesn’t contribute at all. Compton kicks off with the 50-yearold Dre letting the listener know he’s not past it yet, “I’m too old I forgot I got it all, but Andre young enough to still get involved,” he rhymes on opening track Talk About It. Genocide is the earliest standout track featuring one of two impressive Kendrick Lamar appearances and the first line out of his mouth is the startling “recognise whatever side the side reside until the dead is risen.” In Darkside/Gone Dre looks back on his early NWA days and gives a shoutout to his late bandmate-turnedenemy Eazy-E who he imagines is looking down at him from heaven. Snoop Dogg pops up in One Shot One Kill, putting in one of his best performances in years, and DJ Premier
is similarly inspired, his contribution on Animals helping to make it another standout. If there’s a low point on the album it’s Eminem’s rap on Medicine Man, an awful line that pops up midway through the track. It’s not so much shocking as pathetic, it smacks of an artist who feels like he has to say the most offensive thing he can think of which kind of goes against the theme of the rest of the album. For a Hip Hop record however, Compton is quite nostalgic and heartfelt, even though there is the requisite anger and grumpiness too! I don’t think it’s fair to compare Compton to The Chronic and 2001, which stand out because the production and the style of the albums were different from what was around at the time and set off a lot of trends in Hip-Hop. Compton doesn’t come with anything new or different from any other present day Hip-Hop, which isn’t a terrible thing, it’s just a bit of a let-down considering how groundbreaking the other two albums were. I really wanted to love this album but I found the whole thing, apart from maybe a few tracks, underwhelming. It’s not a bad record but I was expecting so much more. Dr Dre always had the ability to break ground and lead with a distinctive style but it’s not very apparent on this album. Compton doesn’t have the same breathtaking power of his previous work. If this is Dre’s grand finale then it’s probably for the best.

LANA DEL REY HIGH BY THE BEACH by padraig conlon
___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
Lana Del Rey has just released High By The Beach the second single off her upcoming, highly anticipated album Honeymoon and the LP’s official lead single. As usual the song finds her world-weary and unlucky in love and stylewise it is more reminiscent of the trip hop from Born to Die than the rockier sound of last year’s Ultraviolence. In spite of the subject matter High By The Beach is quite upbeat, featuring her wonderful vocals laid over a hypnotic synth and it’s probably the catchiest song she’s released so far.
“All I wanna do is get high by the beach, Get high by the beach, get high,” she dreamily sings on the chorus over minimal electronics while taking aim at the man who has hurt her. “You could be a bad m**********r, But that don’t make you a man,” she says before letting him know “the truth is I never bought into your bullsh*t when you would pay tribute to me, because I know that all I want to do is get high by the beach.” Have some of that boyo! I really like this song and if the rest of the forthcoming album is as good as High By The Beach Lana fans will be very happy indeed.

Stripe by colm o’muirí
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
You may have heard about Stripe, the online payments system that was recently valued at $5 billion, however did you know that the company was founded by two Irish brothers Patrick and John Collison in Silicon Valley?
The brothers, originally from Limerick, recently secured the services of Visa for their company – a move that was seen as a real coup for them as they were chosen ahead of their fiercest rivals, Paypal. The company was founded in 2011 and only six months ago it was valued at $3.5 billion. The brothers came up with the idea for the company back in 2009 when both were still studying at university, John at Harvard and Patrick at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The brother’s partnership with Visa will work towards ways of improving digital transactions, as more and more products are being bought and sold online. Some of the ways they are already looking at improving the transactions process is with initiatives such as payment security, along with working on software such as ‘buy

buttons’. This isn’t the first time that Stripe and the Collison brothers have made headlines though, in September of last year they were named as one of Apple’s partners for their new Apple pay service. Stripe is another Silicon Valley success story and like many companies in Silicon Valley, they got their initial business off the ground by signing other start-ups to use their product. Those other start-ups in turn, when they grew, helped the brothers get bigger deals with more and more companies. One of the brothers, Patrick, is also a former winner of the BT Young Scientist competition; he picked up the accolade in 2005, winning with his invention Croma, a language programme. Stripe is currently available in a range of different countries and
Stripe currently allows for credit card payments in 139 different currencies along with bank transfers, Bitcoin, and Alipay. although it is considered an American company anything that involves a success story and Irish founders is sure to gather positive media attention in Ireland, like we have seen to date with Stripe and the Collison brothers. Stripe currently employs 200 people, however with its current international expansion into bigger markets the company is sure to grow. Stripe currently allows for credit card payments in 139 different currencies along with bank transfers, Bitcoin, and Alipay. One financial technology specialist Garrett Cassidy recently said, “Whether Stripe is worth €5 billion, who knows? Stripe is worth whatever someone will pay for it.” Here is hoping that the brothers’ success continues to grow and grow.

mad max by colm o’muirí
___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
Welcome to the Thunderdome.
From developers Avalanche Studios and publishers Warner Bros Interactive comes Mad Max, a vehicular and third-person action video game. The game is set in a postapocalyptic wasteland open world environment in which there is a heavy emphasis on vehicular combat. The game follows Max Rockatansky who goes in search of his lost car, the interceptor, and along the way you are tasked with building his ultimate car, the Magnum Opus. Mad Max is a lone warrior who must fight to stay alive in The Wasteland, however he quickly realises that if he is ever going to survive he cannot do it alone. Max aligns himself with Chumbucket, a gifted but peculiar mechanic, and others to build the ultimate war vehicle so that he can escape The Wasteland. The game is a standalone video game and has no tie-ins with the movie Mad Max: Fury Road. As it is an open world game there is plenty to do and one of your objectives is to scavenge to be able to upgrade and enhance your equipment, weapons and vehicles. This includes raiding enemy encampments to gain access to their valuable resources. The game features heavily on vehicular combat that is entirely physics based and which the developers say that no two battles are ever the same. Using your vehicles
52 // #intallaght / TWEET US
range of powerful weapons you will be tasked with taking out enemy vehicles. Throughout the game you will clash with a number of different enemy factions and gangs which is the basis for the many side missions and quests that you can undertake in this immersive open world environment. Mad Max looks to be an impressive game, however it is worth noting that it is for mature gamers with an 18 rating due to the violence levels in the game. The game is only available on next gen consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One along with PC and Linux. Mad Max is €64.99 in Smyths, €69.99 in HMV/ Xtravision and €74.99. For those of you who pre-order you will receive a Magnus Opus car body called ‘The Ripper’. The game is set for release on September 1st.

rugby world cup 2015 by colm o’muirí
the graphics... __________________________ are still not on Rugby World Cup 2015 is an par with other upcoming rugby union video game that will be developed by next-gen HB Studios and published by console games BigBen Interactive. @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
That’s the same team that brought the woeful Rugby 15 game out in January of last year. Rugby 15 was a universally panned video game, however here is hoping that Rugby World Cup 2015 will be a much better and complete game, and one that the tournament deserves. Unfortunately from what has been released so far Rugby World Cup 2015 looks as big a shambles as Rugby 15. Only screenshots have been released so far and the graphics have improved slightly but are still not on par with other next-gen consoles. The game will let you set up your own tournament where you will play from the pool stages to the final and hopefully win the tournament for your country. Rugby World Cup 15 will feature all 20 teams that will take part in the eighth Ruby World Cup and coverage of the games will be brought to life by commentators Miles Harrison and Stuart Barnes. Those familiar with the rugby coverage on
Sky Sports will be familiar with the talents of both men. Rugby World Cup 15 lets you take on up to four friends in games and players control every aspect of the game from scrums, lineouts, tries and conversions. None of the stadiums have been confirmed for the game but you would expect the stadiums that feature in the tournament to feature in the game. It looks to be another poor game and to be on par with Rugby 15 from what has been released about the game to date. Hopefully they can put together a decent rugby game as it has been a while since fans of the sport have received one of them. The game will be available across all platforms, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC and PS Vita when it is released on September 4th. The game will be €74.99 on the next gen consoles and €64.99 on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Gamescom is Europe’s biggest trade fair for interactive games and entertainment and this year’s show took place between August 5th and 9th. With

the mafia 3 trailer is the best i’ve seen in years
JUST CAUSE 3
STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT
peeks at this year’s show to get people excited for what is to come in 2016 and the rest of this year. There is only one place to start and that is with perhaps the biggest announcement of the weekend coming from 2K and the announcement/reveal trailer for Mafia 3. Quite possibly the best trailer, movie or video game I have seen in years, from the soundtrack to the gorgeous graphics, this is officially the 2016 game that I cannot wait to get my hands on. We also got to see some gameplay footage of the game taken from the PS4 and it looks fantastic and well worth the watch. Star Wars Battlefront was also showcased at Gamescom; to be more specific however it was the fighter squadron dogfights that were on show. This looks crazy and chaotic and if done right could be fantastic to play online, with so many fighters zipping past in the footage that was shown.

PES 2015
WWE2K16
We also saw Luke Skywalker taking on Darth Vader in the game on the ground that looked just as fun. This looks to be a great game and is sure to be a hit with Star Wars and game fans in general. Just Cause 3 was on show and like the first two games everything looks as though it goes boom or can be crushed. The game takes place in Rico’s home and features characters that knew Rico when he was a reckless racing driver and not the character we know from the previous games. This should bring a fun dynamic to the series and looks to be a hit. There was gameplay footage of WWE 2K16 and for a next gen game I have to say the graphics don’t look that great. It was confirmed that Terminator would be a playable character in the game, perhaps taking inspiration from Mortal Kombat X, which lets you play as Predator and Jason Voorhees. I’m hoping for all WWE fans that the graphics improve before the game is released because
with a roster of a rumoured 120+ that could be a major hit for 2K. Gameplay footage from PES 2016 and the new Tomb Raider were also on show for those in attendance at Gamescom. The new Hitman was also featured along with a whole host of other games that you should check out for yourself because there were a lot of future games showcased at this year’s event. Gamescom 2015 looked to be amazing and with the footage and playable content that was shown you could see that the next leap in graphics and gameplay for the next gen consoles is something to be excited about.

NISSAN JUKE by RACHEL LYNCh

So you are looking to invest in a sports car but you don’t want one that you will be paying off for the next 20 years?
It was back in 2011 when Nissan introduced their new eye-catching model Juke. The styling of this model is quite unusual but there is no denying that it’s a head turner. From the bumper to the lights they have really focused heavily on image. The car itself is a four-door but the passenger doors are hidden so it gives the look of a coupé. The Nissan styling is really out there and as you can see the indicator lights are positioned right up into the bonnet while the headlights are down in the sleekly styled bumper. Nissan wants this model out there and they have ticked all the boxes in terms of interior too. It’s all about sportiness with the Juke and as soon as you sit inside you are surrounded in comfort. The steering wheel is nice and small in diameter and the cabin on a whole is very functional yet visually modern. There are large cup holder places in the centre and bucket loads of space throughout. The model we test drove was a 2012 1.5 Diesel Nissan Juke. With annual road tax of just €280 this car really is cheap to run. The drive itself was pretty impressive. With high seating you get a great view of the road and your surroundings. As we took to the motorway the car

inside you feel very compact and almost forget you are in a model of its size really was put to the test, and it didn’t disappoint. The simple gear change and quick start off speed added to the luxury of the drive. It’s a decentsized car but when inside you feel very compact and almost forget you are in a model of its size. This car will suit a number of people. Lending agency fees – These may include an application fee, as well as the costs of the lender’s survey and searches. There may also be fees for mortgage loan costs and an indemnity bond to ensure that if the lender has to repossess the property it won’t make a loss.
LEGAL FEES
There is no fixed rate of charges for legal fees. Under Section 4 of the Competition Act 2002 there is no industry-wide scale of fees, that is, there is no fixed percentage or level of fees. Rather, solicitors can offer competitive rates for conveyancing work – the legal fees associated with buying a home. Solicitors may charge a flat fee or a percentage of the purchase price. It is advisable to shop around to find a solicitor who will charge the lowest possible fee.

There may be other costs associated with the legal process, including Land Registry fees and fees for legal searches. Value Added Tax is also payable on the legal fees.
BUYER’S SURVEY FEE
This is the fee for your own survey, which is different from the survey carried out by the lending agency. You will need a survey if you plan to buy a second-hand property. The cost can vary considerably.
through them. Premiums vary but always reduce over the life of the loan as the amount of the loan reduces. Local authorities run their own plan (The Local Authorities Mortgage Protection Plan) and people borrowing under the Local Authorities House Purchase Loan scheme must take out insurance through this scheme.
HOME INSURANCE
The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) is the professional body for chartered surveyors.
Most lenders will also insist that you take out adequate home insurance to protect your home in the event of fire or other damage. You are not obliged to purchase home insurance from your lender.
MORTGAGE PROTECTION INSURANCE
Stamp Duty
Mortgage Protection insurance is designed to pay the balance of your mortgage if you die before the loan is fully repaid. Lenders are legally obliged to make sure that you have adequate mortgage protection cover when you take out a home loan, although you do not have to arrange this insurance
Stamp duty is based on the value of the property transaction. For more information visit citizensinformation.ie

BOOK
AUTHOR LOUISE O’NEILL
only ever yours by genna patterson
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
In advance of Louise O’Neill’s new novel, Asking For It out on September 3rd, we reviewed her first novel which was released last year to critical acclaim.
Only Ever Yours is a book by young Cork native Louise O’Neill, and tells the story of a dystopian world where girls are not born but ‘designed’ and raised in schools to become one of three types of servants to men. The preferred option (as told to the girls) is a Companion–the girls will be perfect like a Stepford wife bearing sons to their husbands. Others will become Concubines, used by the men sexually, and Chastities, nun-like chaste women, made infertile by surgery and left to raise the next generation of girls. The girls can only give birth to sons, so
60 // #intallaght / TWEET US
women are ‘bred’ in labs. The story follows Freida, or actually frieda, as the girls are so unimportant that their names are never capitalised. frieda, aged 16, is in her final year, almost ready for selection, and is trying her best to stay in the top ten of those most desirable for companionship. However she notices that her best friend and former number one isabel is acting strangely. At first frieda thinks her friend has dumped her as she becomes quieter and begins to gain weight–the most horrific thing a girl can do. As the school year continues, freida attempts to befriend the new number one megan and her posse, at a cost of her shattered friendship to isabel. The world the girls live in bears a frightening resemblance to our own society, with the girls encouraged to watch ‘trashy’ TV shows, and constantly update their social media status with selfies and compare themselves to each other physically. While the book is marketed as young adult fiction, it is smart enough and indeed relevant
enough to be a commentary on the vanity and self-obsession of the current teenage upbringing in the western world. It may be done to the extreme in the story, but so many scenarios in the book ring true to what teenage girls face daily in this world where beauty and perfection appear to matter more than kindness or generosity. Daily weigh-ins, diet pills and sleep enhancers, along with night time messages to tell them to keep improving themselves are all part of their world, as well as menstruationsuppressing pills as it is seen as ‘unclean’ by the men. While some parts of the world are desirable, such as the Self Styler that does hair and make up and helps select an outfit, this is a world that no one would want to inhabit, except maybe misogynistic men! Only Ever Yours is a compelling page turner that kept me enticed the whole way through. That said, I had one qualm, in that the girls remain oblivious to their plight and follow the rules (mostly). There is no fighting back against the system as seen in other female-driven adult fiction like The Hunger Games. Indeed there is (up to a point) huge scope for a sequel to further explore the realm of the constrained girls, but maybe it’s truer to life in that way and honours itself and its characters, who are, after all ‘bred’ to be amenable, ‘perfect’ women. An absolute must-read.

Where Do You go When you Eat Cereal? by Peter Walsh _____________ He was standing with his back to the kitchen counter, staring into the nothingness. The
bowl held to his mouth, he drew it down slowly when he noticed her, his wife, looking right at him. She was sitting on the couch about ten yards away, her chin resting between thumb and forefinger, one leg bouncing over the other. “Where do you go when you eat cereal?” she asked, there was something off about her. The question, he felt, was a trap. “What?” he asked, as if not quite understanding. “Where do you go when you eat cereal?” there it was again, it seemed now more accusation than inquiry. “I don’t understand,” he said. He knew instantly that this line of questioning was very dangerous; something told him that the health of his marriage balanced upon the tightrope of its response. “When you eat cereal you stare ahead and you’re not here anymore. You’re not even you.” Her voice was calm, containing

that calculated level of composure that meant she had probably already had this conversation in her head. “Just daydreaming,” he smiled goofily, both of them paying close attention to his delivery to see if the casualness seemed forced. “No,” she said flatly, “this is different.” “Why?” he asked. “I just know it is,” she said. “Well, you’re paranoid this morning,” he said. “Should I be?” “What?” “Paranoid?” “Jesus,” he said, “it’s just a bowl of cereal.” “No, it isn’t,” she said, “actually cereal has nothing to do with it. It’s a smoke screen.” “Are you all right?” he asked. “I know exactly what it means, it means you were thinking about her.” “Who?” “Don’t treat me like a child, Anthony.” “That’s long over. You need to stop thinking about it,” he said. “Maybe you regret it being over.” He rolled his eyes, “I’m starting to alright.” “I knew it,” she said. “That was a joke, because of all this.” “What do you mean all this?”
“I mean the Spanish Inquisition. All I wanted was a quick bite before I left for work, I didn’t know there’d be a trial.” “You’re lying.” “You’re crazy.” “Detachment. You’re here but you’re not here. It’s been happening for a while. Did you think I didn’t notice?” “I have to go.” “Tell her I said hi.” “You are mental. Do you hear me? Mental.” He made to leave but she rose and stood in his way, he took her by the shoulders firmly and moved her aside and with that the confrontation fell down into sadness. “Anthony?” she said, in words not much more than a whisper. “What?” “Do you swear on the children’s life?” “I swear it,” he said. “Okay,” she said, weakly. The door slammed, and she stood listening till the sound of the engine trailed off down the road and left her standing small in the empty silence where she had already started to doubt herself. *** He pulled the car up at
the garage by the end of her road. She was already there. He watched her walk towards him, those hips swinging side to side, the effortless youth of her face. “How’s your wife?” she asked. “Paranoid,” he said. She put a hand on his thigh, “Well she shouldn’t be, should she?” “No, not at all,” he said. “She says hello by the way.” “How did it go with work?” “Fine. It’s easy when you’re the boss.” “Did you book a hotel?” “A suite.” “Well, can we order up some room service, I’m starving.” “Of course, you know I wouldn’t mind a bowl of something myself.” Peter Walsh, 34, lives in Sandymount, Dublin. He likes to write fiction and does freelance camera work.

IT Tallaght, we are thrilled to welcome you through the doors this September. EMAIL SUPRES@ITTDUBLIN.IE
From July 13th to 17th, we attended Students’ Union Training at Maynooth University. We covered talks on various relevant issues such as teamwork, leadership and power. I also attended meetings with other Students’ Union Presidents from across the country, as did Aisling with the Education Officers and Shauna with the Welfare Officers. This gave us an opportunity to discuss plans for the year, but also to network and engage with the other colleges. We will be attending further training at SUT+ which will be held at Queens University Belfast from August 20th-21st. We have plans to do an ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) course. On August 29th we will be attending a one day course which will result in the three of us being fully trained for defibrillators and also CPR. Throughout the month of August, many students have been busy sitting repeat and deferred examinations. We

hope that everyone got on well with their exams and best of luck to those with any to follow. The CAO results have just been released and students have been finding out what courses they have been awarded. For all those who have been awarded and chosen to take up a place in IT Tallaght, we are thrilled to welcome you through the doors this September. September 4th is when Induction Week begins for all new first year students. It is during this week where they will be given a tour of the campus and get to meet the Students’ Union team. During the summer months, we have been busy organising Freshers’ Week. It will run from September 21st until the 25th this year. In the past this week has included various forms of exciting entertainment from comedians to inflatables and different competitions. Make sure to keep an eye out for the next InTallaght edition where we will outline what we have planned for the week. In early August, ITT students Darren Farrell, Naheed Bari, Shane O’Connor and Nathan Riordan travelled to Warsaw, Poland to represent Ireland in the World Final of the 2015 CIMA Global Business Challenge. They competed against 26 different countries, across four continents. The GBC is an international
competition designed to bring out the best in potential young business leaders and provide the opportunity to test their teamwork, business, analysis and presentation skills against the best and brightest from around the world. More than 14,000 students around the world took part this year, competing at local and regional levels for a spot at the global final in Warsaw. The two-day global final in Warsaw was divided into two rounds with only six of the 26 teams making the final round. After an intense final, Singapore were crowned 2015 GBC champions, followed by India in second place and the Philippines in third place.
We would like to congratulate our ITT Dublin students for their impressive work this year and we are extremely proud to have been represented internationally by such hard-working and driven students. We have no doubt in our minds that these world finalists will be very successful in the future. Jessica, Aisling and Shauna can be contacted via email on supres@ ittdublin.ie, sueducation@ittdublin.ie or suwelfare@ittdublin.ie respectively. Katie McCabe Kicking back Katie by jack madden
Our first qualifier for the Euros is in ____________________________ McCabe from Tallaght Stadium Katie Kilnamanagh has been making name for herself on the Irish against Finland on aWomen’s Football Team and has September 21st so to won everything the club game in be involved in that Ireland has to offer aged just 19. at my home town stadium would be fantastic. @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTJACK
McCabe explains how she started off in football saying, “Obviously my brother (Gary McCabe of Shamrock Rovers) has always been mad into football so I guess I just started playing with him and his mates on the roads and my love of the game grew from there.” Having played with the boys in Kilnamanagh and Crumlin United before playing girl’s football in Templeogue, McCabe moved to Raheny United where she’s been involved the last four years and who have recently became part of Shelbourne Ladies. Katie says the move has been great explaining that “Raheny didn’t have the resources to put a team in the league so we joined Shels and everyone is delighted... We now have good coaches and a great underage set up which has loads of girls in Ireland squads and coming into the senior team so it’s been a no brainer really. On balancing working life and training Katie tells me, “We play in an amateur league in which no one gets paid as we don’t have the funding unfortunately. I work in Nando’s in the Square and a lot of the girl’s work 9 to 5 but we do the same training as a lot of the lad’s teams so there is some juggling between work and training, but we all love what we do so it doesn’t affect us really.”
68 // #intallaght
McCabe may not have to worry about juggling jobs for too long as she talks about going pro and admits, “I’ve been approached by a few clubs in England over the last few months but given that they’re in the middle of the season I felt like it wasn’t the right time for me to move. I’d rather join a team at the start of the season with a fresh start so hopefully come December we’ll open up negotiations again and see what happens.” With a future in the professional game on the agenda Katie knows that the money in the women’s game still isn’t enough to retire on. “When I’m in England I’d like to do a college course during my time there and hopefully come out with a qualification in something to do with sports such as sports science or management so that when I finish playing I can make a career doing something I love.” McCabe has been involved at every underage level and recently played for the Senior Women’s team against the USA which was huge for her proclaiming, “Being selected against the USA was amazing! To get on the pitch against the world champions for 25 minutes in front of 60,000 people was an unreal experience and I plan on staying involved now after seeing how that felt.” So what next for Miss McCabe? “Our first qualifier for the Euros is in Tallaght Stadium against Finland on September 21st so to be involved in that at my home town stadium would be fantastic.”

Local Talent Shine At European Youth Olympics by JACK MADDEN ____________________________ A trio of local talent were on fire in Tbilisi, Georgia as they took part in what was Swim Ireland’s most successful trip to the European Youth Olympic Festival. Tallaght and Swim Ireland Performance Centre swimmer Antoinette Neamt took home bronze in the 800m Freestyle, the 14-year-old clocking a time of 8 minutes 47.12 seconds to win Bronze, just 0.13 of a second behind Silver medallist Petra Barocsai of Hungary. Neamt would go on to win a silver medal in the 400m Freestyle with a time of 4:16:61 which was a PB and also put her inside qualifying time for next year’s
officials had “moved heaven and earth” to allow the fight to take place in Vegas. He also confirmed that the much anticipated women’s title bantamweight bout between Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate will not feature on the Aldo-McGregor card. Tallaght’s very own Paddy “The Hooligan” Holohan has also been added to the card for UFC Fight Night Dublin on October 24th. The flyweight will face off with American Louis Smolka who defeated fellow Irishman Neil Seery in his last bout. Holohan joins fellow Irishmen Joseph Duffy, Norman Parke and Cathal Pendred on the exciting card. European Championships in London. Her Tallaght Swim Club Teammate Niamh Coyne made two finals at the event clocking up a personal best of 2:37:83 on her way to sixth place in the 200m Breaststroke and enjoying a really impressive festival. Templeogue Swim Club’s 13-yearold sensation Ellen Walshe took home silver in the 100m butterfly to mark her first international medal and had previously set an Irish Junior record of 1:01:72 in the semi-finals of the event. In the final her finishing time of 1:02:17 was enough to see her take home silver behind Petra Barocsai of Hungary who finished in 1:01:46. Walshe truly deserved her silver medal as she enjoyed a fantastic week in Tbilisi finishing fourth in the 200m butterfly, setting a PB in the 100m FC and helping the Irish mixed relay team to fourth place while also setting a new Irish Junior record time. Congratulations to the girls!

daniel davey daniel davey, leinster & dublin Gaa performance nutritionist by jack madden
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTJACK
Diet and nutrition are important factors for healthy living and an athletic lifestyle and with that in mind Jack Madden met with Daniel Davey, performance nutritionist with Leinster Rugby and the Dublin Senior Footballers for a chat.
with Dublin and Leinster you’re talking about two very competitive environments where there is a huge amount of discipline put into training and nutrition.
Daniel plays club football with Ballyboden St Enda’s and represented Sligo and London at inter county level and admits his involvement in sport was key to where he is today, “When you’re interested in improving your own performance and making your own game better nutrition is something that comes into it.” Leinster and Dublin are respectively the best teams in their fields and Daniel juggles his role between the set ups explaining, “The time I spend with the teams varies on where we are in the season. At the moment I’m very busy with Leinster as they prepare for the new season. This is when the players try to make the most physiological changes. The Dublin team however are in the middle of trying to win another All Ireland so it’s all about maintenance, recovery and how they work around training and game preparation.” One question Daniel always gets asked is how the nutrition differs between rugby and football and he says “It’s important to mention that the food we eat should be the same regardless of the sport. It comes down to quantities. The average required intake of a rugby player on training day might be 4,500 calories while a footballer might only
require 3-3500 calories. The volumes of protein, carbs and fats will vary too. A footballer will be doing a lot of intermittent running which requires a high level of carbs while at this stage in the season a rugby player will be focussing more on protein, quality fats and high fibre foods.” While rugby is a professional sport the GAA is still an amateur organisation but Daniel is quick to dispel any ideas that there are major differences in attitude insisting, “Gaelic football at the highest level is only amateur in name. The Dublin lads would be at the very top of the game when it comes to nutrition and its implementation. At the end of the day it comes down to competitiveness and the type of culture bred in a team environment and with Dublin and Leinster you’re talking about two very competitive environments where there is a huge amount of discipline put into training and nutrition.” When it comes to nutrition I ask Daniel if there are certain players who he needs to make allowances for but the answer is fairly straightforward as he explains, “Of course different personalities mean different habits but across the board in both camps I’m very lucky to have great leaders and older players who are very serious about their nutrition and set the standard in that area.” Daniel’s own website www. foodflicker.com will launched in the coming weeks and he explains, “I’ve begun to appreciate while working with athletes that one of the things that catch peoples’ attention are pictures and short snippets of info. People are interested in what to eat, when to eat and how to cook it. With that in mind we developed the FoodFlicker platform initially through social media and the response has been great so we’re looking forward to the website going live in the next few weeks.”

under 17’s season kicks off by padraig conlon
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
Shamrock Rovers Under 17’s played one of the very first matches in the new FAI Under 17 National League this month when they made the trip west to take on Mervue United. On what
was a very unseasonal day with driving wind and rain the young Hoops put in a gallant effort in a match that had almost everything. They made a dream start when they took the lead through a header from Aaron Dobbs in the eigth minute but their lead was cancelled out within a minute when Mervue equalised. Rovers task was made harder after 30 minutes when centre back Declan Watters received a straight red for a professional foul. Mervue took the lead through a free kick a short time later but The Hoops showed great fighting qualities and equalised just before half time when Jamie Hamilton scored a belter from 30 yards. The second half was a tougher affair for the visitors and after repelling a number of attacks they conceded after 57 minutes when a shot from distance found the back of their net. Once again Rovers rolled up their sleeves and

But there was to be a cruel sting in the tail. As the game moved in to injury time a rasping drive from Mervue’s Tommy Molloy beat Ben Murray to give Mervue all three points in what was a cruel ending to this historic first game. The Rovers lads can be proud of their performance and they collectively showed amazing spirit to battle for most of the game with ten men and only be beaten by a goal so late in the game. If they show the same qualities for the rest of the campaign they will be formidable opponents for any team in their section. Shamrock Rovers: 1. Ben Murray, 22. Calvin Rogers, 4. Declan Watters, 5. Sean Callan, 3. Conor Gleeson (Quinn 71 mins), 7. Richie English, 37. Harry Cornally, 6. Cian Collins, 8. Jamie Hamilton, 11. Shane Stokes, 9. Aaron Dobbs. Substitutes: 30. Mark Travers, 14. Jason Byrne, 18. Alex Kealy, 17. Darren Quinn. Mervue United 4 Shamrock Rovers 3.
achievement, well done to everyone involved, you did the country proud. Hooperman and his buddy and East Stand Rovers fan Francis Bilardi really enjoyed themselves!

There was sad news this month with the shock announcement that Keith Fahey has been forced to retire from football due to persistent hip and injury problems that have sidelined him since the FAI cup game against Pats in May.
Hoops fans were delighted last November when he decided to make the move from Pats to Rovers and the Old Bawn native himself spoke of his joy at “coming home.” Unfortunately he only got to make 12 league appearances for Rovers, the most memorable being his performance out in Bray in a 3-0 win in April. Capped 16 times for Ireland under Giovanni Trapattoni, he scored the winning goal in Armenia in September 2010 which helped get the country to the 2012 Euro’s. Unfortunately injury stopped him taking his place in the squad for the finals and he had to withdraw on the eve of the squad’s departure for Poland.
His outstanding performances in the League of Ireland earned him a move to Birmingham City in 2008 and he helped them win promotion to the Premier League and was part of the team that won the League Cup in 2011. In an interview with the Rovers website he said: “Unfortunately I have had to come to this decision after taking advice from the doctor and surgeon. I feel that it is the right time to finish playing professional football. “I’d like to thank everyone that has supported me, managed me and played with me during my time playing football.” Rovers boss Pat Fenlon paid tribute to him. “Keith will be a big loss to Shamrock Rovers and the League of Ireland in general,” said Fenlon. “He has been a central part of our squad this season and has been a great influence on the players, particularly the younger members of our squad.” “We will miss his experience at the club, experience he brought from playing at the top level of English football, in addition to his international career, and I want to wish him all the best in his retirement.” All of us at InTallaght Magazine would like to thank Keith for kindly doing interviews with us in the past and we all wish him the very best for the future.
