THE EDITOR Welcome to the September issue of InTallaght Magazine. September has arrived so quickly and even Electric Picnic has come and gone already. For those of you who went (we’re very jealous), we hope that you are settling back into normal life. But don’t pack away the wellies just yet as no doubt there’ll be rain clouds ahead soon with autumn well on its way. The September issue is one we’re truly excited about because we have our Wedding Special section! Packed full with tips for brides, bridesmaids and best man speeches (and lots more), we hope to help you make your big day a special one. Our resident Bride-to-Be (and Designer) Gwen has all the best tips and she’d certainly know, as her own wedding is in less than a month! We are also really excited about our newly redesigned website intallaght.ie, which is full of local news stories, reviews and so much more, keeping you up to date with all that is happening in Tallaght and beyond. We will also be launching a new app soon, so keep an eye out for it! Additionally we have some great interviews for you this issue with two of Ireland’s loveliest celebrities. First up style guru Lisa Fitzpatrick talked to us all about her new Arnotts Fashion Fix Show on September 19th and we managed to find out who her favourite famous colleagues are too! Lisa was an absolute pleasure to interview and it’s no surprise the self-starting stylist has such a

fabulous career both here and in the UK. We also spoke to Niall Breslin, also known as Bressie about all the things he’s up to at the moment. Not content with being a positive advocate for mental health and mindfulness in Ireland and speaking at the upcoming WellFest, he has also released a book called Me and My Mate Jeffrey. The book is aimed at teenagers and was written because Bressie thinks a book like it would have helped him feel less isolated as a 15-year-old. Add to that he is rehearsing with The Blizzards again, and it’s amazing he actually had time to talk to us! Finally, we have loads more with our usual movie, book, game and music reviews, as well as our fantastic Humans of Tallaght feature, this month with Willie from St Aengus’ and for those of you gearing up for the Rugby World Cup and the All Ireland Final, we have an exclusive preview in our sports section just for you! As always, we hope you enjoy reading InTallaght Magazine/ intallaght.ie as much as we enjoyed making it for you! Get in touch with us by emailing editor@intallaght.ie if you have anything you think the readers of InTallaght will want to know about.

Improved Litter Rating For Tallaght A Good Start by fergus mcnally ____________________________ An improvement in Tallaght’s ranking in the annual league table published by Irish Businesses Against Litter is welcome but also shows that there is no room for complacency, according to Dublin South West Election Candidate and Independent Senator, Katherine Zappone. Tallaght has improved its standing from 38 out of 40 urban areas surveyed last year to 31 out of 40 in figures just published and is ranked as ‘moderately littered’. The Independent Senator is calling for a community-wide push to further improve the standing and to ensure Tallaght continues to be a pleasant location to live and to visit. Senator Zappone said, “I am confident that by improving our enforcement efforts together with the ongoing efforts of community, voluntary and residence groups as well as local business we will see our rating improve even further in 2016.”

Crowe Calls For Dublin )KTGæIJVGTU 6WRRQTV by genna patterson __________________________ Dublin South West representative Seán Crowe TD has called on the public to get behind Dublin’s Firefighters and support their demands for critically low staffing levels to be addressed. Crowe said that the huge vote (96% of SIPTU members balloted for industrial action) reflects the widespread concerns shared by Firefighters that the service is being run down to a critical level and that any reduced service is going to impact on

safety and people’s lives. He said that staff shortages have reached a “critical point”, with members being forced to do huge amounts of overtime as there is no cover for people out sick, on holidays or having retired.

Leaving Cert Points System Overhauled By Fergus Mcnally __________________________ The Department of Education have announced that the grading and Third Level points system in the Leaving Certificate is receiving its first overhaul in over 20 years. From the Leaving Cert of 2017 the number grading system will change from the existing A/NG to H1/ H8 in Higher Papers and O1-O8 at Ordinary Level. This will reduce the amount of grades awarded at each Level from 14 to just 8. This change

Into the Woods and Helen will be accompanied by Brian O’Connor, the musical director of Riverdance. Helen says, “Stephen Sondheim is an amazing lyricist so I’m delighted to be working on his songs.” Helen also runs a stage school here in Tallaght called The Helen Jordan Stage School, which celebrates 30 years this year. One of the successful exstudents of the school is Steve Garrigan, Lead singer with Kodaline.

will first impact those student who just this week have started 5th year. Currently a mark of 5% generally separates Leaving Certificate grades but under the new system, a grade will cover a 10% stretch of marks. The CAO points system is also set for an overhaul and under the new scale any points score from 0 to 625 will be possible, unlike the current system which goes up in increments of 5; this will reduce the number of students applying for the same course that could potentially tie on points, meaning random selection will be drastically reduced. It is hoped that the new system will encourage more students to sit the exams at the higher level.

I’ll be 33 years there on the 13th of December which is the same date the parish celebrates 40 years of the church in St Aengus. I’m the deputy sacristan there. I was also the secretary of St Annes GAA club as well, I was elected in 1953 and was involved for 30 years until I moved away from Bohernabreena. After I stopped playing football I went back to the drama which was always a big interest of mine. I am involved with the Glenasmole Drama Group and we did a performance of the John B. Keane play The Field. I played the son and the fella that played The Bull was younger than me! I still love to go and watch drama. I also did a play with a group from The Shakespeare Theatre one time, The Saint and Mary Kate it’s called. In the opening scene I was in bed with a prostitute with just a shirt on me! It took place in the Shakespeare Theatre in town, on a Good Friday and all! I’ve been coming to The Square since the day it opened, I’m here nearly every day. I meet the lads downstairs,

it’s good aul craic with all the boys, we all call it the departure lounge. If anybody is missing we’ll say ‘did anyone check Fanagans?!’ I was employed in Torney’s for 28 years and I took voluntary redundancy in 1977 and got a job in the council working on the roads and I was there until ’98. I started working in 1948 and I finished in ’98. “I’ve been married to my wife Lily 50 years last June, you only get 21 for murder! Lily and Willie, it’s very poetic isn’t it?! She was reared up in Bohernabreena, near the water works. I met her in The Irish Club which was a dance hall in town. I have five children, one died at birth, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. We had seven grandchildren but my granddaughter Marsia was killed in a hit and run in Clondalkin in October 2005. She was only 16, she would have been 26 on 31st August this year. The woman who hit her only got 12 months with two months suspended. Originally there were seven children in my family but they’re all dead now, I’m the last of the mohicans! I was adopted, I never knew my parents. I looked for information from the South Dublin Union and the information I got was my mother was Mary Murphy and she was only 19 when she had me. Her address was Mountjoy Prison, whether she was working there or she was a prisoner I don’t know because I never got anymore information. I often wonder if I have brothers and sisters living in Dublin. I’ll be 83 this month and I’m still very busy!”

fabulously fashionable As one of Ireland’s best-known stylists, Lisa Fitzpatrick has a pretty amazing career. We caught up with her to see if she ever takes a break (not this month!). by RACHEL LYNCh @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

Lisa Fitzpatrick is one of Ireland’s most loved fashion stylists, an author, TV presenter and radio broadcaster. It’s hard to believe it’s been over 10 years since she first appeared on our screens. It’s been a long road for Lisa and the success didn’t just come overnight. She’s a familiar face on not just Irish TV but also across the water working with TV3 on Ireland AM and XposĂŠ, and on ITV’s This Morning guiding the public in their choices for their seasonal wardrobes. We at InTallaght Magazine caught up with Lisa to discuss her career to date and get those highly sought-after style tips. She tells us how it all started and how bloggers are now taking over in the style world. You may be surprised to know that Lisa began her career working on a shop floor before making it onto the TV. “I went into wholesale and management and had my own shop for eight years and then had a hairdressers for nine years. I had always dressed

people in my own shop and shops I worked in. I think I can dress every size because I have been every shape and size and that makes it very easy to dress women.â€? Lisa started her TV career almost 11 years ago when she appeared on Ireland AM and since then she has continued with a regular slot on the show. “I’ve had my own show SOS and worked on XposĂŠ, worked in ITV in London for two years and last year worked on the X Factor semi final with Rylan and Jamelia. I have been very lucky with my career that it has gone over to the UK.â€? It’s been proven many times that initiative will certainly work in your favour in this industry and that’s exactly how Lisa is where she is today. “I phoned up Ireland AM and asked if I could go on and talk about my own shop at the time and that’s really where it started, by picking up the phone. They said yes and here I am still doing it and loving it.â€? Lisa explains as a stylist, an author and a mother she must juggle everything and how it’s all about time management.

NKUC æV\RCVTKEM explains how over time she has realised they are people just like anyone else. “I have interviewed Caprice, Karen Millen and Erin O’Conner for my first book and they are just like all of us, they are just as down to earth as you or I.” Working so closely alongside celebs is fantastic says Lisa but her real joy comes from working with the public. “I think for me personally I get more of a kick styling a real person who has gone through life-changing situations, maybe health issues, separation or a woman who has lost her mojo because she’s given up her career to be with her kids and I get more joy giving her confidence.” Although styling people is Lisa’s real love she explains how she works with the person picking out outfits that they will wear again over time. “I don’t dress people up in top to toe nonsense. If I’m giving someone an opportunity to be dressed top to toe in style the one thing I’m going to make sure of is that it’s something they are going to wear again and that they are comfortable with. Not something that is going to sit in their wardrobe.” This edition of InTallaght focuses heavily on weddings and Lisa tells us her do’s and don’ts for dressing for the event. “I don’t buy outfits for weddings, I work with stuff I already have. People overcomplicate things and I think you should really focus on hair and makeup. Don’t wear new shoes because they will end up crippling you, you are better off with a pair that have been tried and tested than spending money on a new pair. So I would rather focus

I use H&M and ZARA to fill in on everything, I will always buy nice cotton T-shirts in Zara because you get that great quality 14 // #intallaght / TWEET US

on the hair and makeup because when I do it I have one look, but when Brown Sugar do it I look completely different.” Lisa is one of the most stylish women in the country and she tells us about all her must-haves in her wardrobe especially coming into the autumn. “For me it’s all about knitwear and nice trousers that are comfortable. Having a nice winter coat is always important. I buy a nice winter coat every year but I will still take out winter coats that I have bought four or five years ago. I love scarves to inject a bit of colour. You can’t go wrong with grey, camel, white, navy or black in your wardrobe and they’re the colours that get me through September to December and then I’ll add some colours through scarves, bags and jewellery, but I keep it very simple”. Her fashion tips don’t stop there, having worked for years Lisa knows all the tricks of the trade and she herself knows more than anyone about peoples’ buying habits. Her motto for shoppers is simple, “If in doubt you can do without, if you are trying something on and you have to think about it then don’t bother with it.” Although a well-known stylist in her own right Lisa explains that if she won the lotto tomorrow her first investment would be to buy every Victoria Beckham piece. “I think she is absolutely world-class and I wouldn’t have thought that 100 years ago when she was in the Spice Girls but I think she is absolutely mega now.” Another celebrity Lisa credits for style is Kate Moss. “I absolutely adore her style, she pulls off the most incredible looks that some wouldn’t be able to. Watching Kendall Jenner come up and really getting into fashion, there are certain people who always seem to really get it right and certainly Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss would be two people that do that, and Sienna Miller also has a great eye.”

HIGH-STREET STYLE In terms of stores to pick up on the latest styles Lisa tells us that the high street fashion really is where it’s at these

days and although she loves many of the designer styles she can’t live without the stores we would visit day to day. “I use H&M and ZARA to fill in on everything, I will always buy nice cotton T-shirts in Zara because you get that great quality, I would rather spend that extra five or 10 euro.” Don’t worry girls Lisa also mentions her love for Penneys, “You can’t walk out of Penneys without buying something because it really is incredible value. Their denim collection is absolutely brilliant, their sportswear is great. It really is a great place to have a browse, my daughter Sophie is obsessed with it now too – she’s 12 and she loves it.” The big question on all our minds is what is going to be an essential piece as we come close to our autumn/winter wardrobe? “Stop buying in sales now, it’s now time to get forward and move with the weather and we know what Ireland is like and how unpredictable it is. I would just say to people now to start pulling out the clothes that you have had out and start to move summer

If I’m giving someone an opportunity to be dressed top to toe in style the one thing I’m going to make sure of is that it’s something they are going to wear again and that they are comfortable with away. Look at what you have first before you go shopping and see what’s missing and fill in the gaps rather than going bananas and spending all your money and then regretting it before items have even hit the shop floor. A lot of companies get everything in, in stages, so the first stage is really the beginning of August when they start to get their autumn in, some as early as July but I think it really nice to just get little key pieces but hold off because November and December you get some great looks in too.” Lisa has crafted out a career over the years that many young girls today could only dream of. With the likes of fashion blogging becoming such a massive trend these days it has become an even tougher market in which to break into. We asked Lisa her suggestions to those looking to go down the same route as her. “Knock on all the doors and keep knocking and don’t give up. The thing about the bloggers is they are incredible girls and they put so much work and energy into it. They are a younger

generation of people unlike myself who are big on social media, I’m not as big on social media and I have a different market where I do a lot of corporate work but for the young girls, decide what you want and focus on that one thing. A lot of people are trying to be everything whether its beauty, hair, fashion the lot – choose something you know in your heart you are passionate about and fly with that and don’t give up. Keep emailing people to assist them; I worked alongside people to get some experience to get to where I am. Find something that pays the bills and then keep doing the other work part time but you have got to be prepared to put the work in.”

FASHION FIX It’s been a busy start to the year for Lisa but it’s about to get even more exciting with her Fashion Fix in collaboration with Arnotts on September 19th in the Spencer Hotel Dublin with tickets on sale at fitzpatrickstyle.com.

“It’s a great event, it starts at 10am and I do the fashion at 11am, then we have hair and makeup with Brown Sugar. Rosanna Davison does nutrition and we have Marissa Carter who does the tan, then we have our fashion show and then lunch with Processo followed by everyone receiving goody bags and the excitement doesn’t end – then we also have a celebrity guest.” Lisa told us although she is kept busy with her continued work with Ireland AM and Xposé, she is also toying with the idea of writing her third book. “It’s not really there yet, nothing has grasped me yet but I am in development. Then I am looking at a few other projects this year, I’m thinking of bringing out a makeup line so that’s in the early development stages. It’s all go”. If you would like to head along to Lisa’s Fashion Fix this month well then log onto her website fitzpatrickstyle. com today and book your tickets while you still can!

Bressie And Beyond

Bressie has travelled a long road through mental health issues, but is using his experiences to makes changes in Ireland, with a new documentary on Iron Man, a book and a website to promote healthy mindfulness for teenagers. by GENNA PATTERSON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

Bressie, or Niall Breslin has quickly become the face of mental health in Ireland, something that takes a lot of courage and strength, and something he has earned through experience. He has been many things; an athlete, a musician, a judge on The Voice – but most of all he has been human. He is open and honest when he talks, and that, he says was key to his own recovery from depression and anxiety. He says, “If you can’t be honest in your relationships, can you ever truly have a successful one? I hid my illness for so

long, and didn’t tell anyone what I was going through and the road back for me began with honesty and openness.” Indeed he says that he destroyed relationships while hiding his internal struggles but when he began to recover he went back to rebuild those relationships. “Even in my current relationship with Roz (Purcell), from day one I told her that this has had a huge effect on my life. If honesty isn’t there then a relationship isn’t a real relationship.” Initially Roz asked him how severe it has been and how it’s BRESSIE COMPLETED HIS FIRST IRON MAN IN AUSTRIA LAST YEAR

affected him. “She was really curious about it, and I said to her ‘I’ll be 100% honest with you at all times and if there’s a day where I feel I don’t want to be around people I’ll tell you, and there’ll be no messing or me being an a***hole. But I think that’s really what you have to do and really in the last couple of years those days have really become few and far between.” Bressie says that he is at a point now where he feels he has got control and can feel his anxiety or panic attacks coming, and when he does he

looks at his diet, he avoids alcohol and exercises. He believes that how you treat you body has a huge effect on your mindset. “I think some people can be very naive about that, like if you eat sh*t food all the time of course you’re going to feel a bit low, so you’ve got to look at everything for wellness. Some people get chest infections when their immune system gets low – for me, I get depressed and so I made that link and I’ve done everything in my power to strengthen my immune system.”

IRISH EPIDEMIC Bressie is the first to admit that he is no doctor or counselor, he is instead a humble, self-effacing survivor of a condition that as many as one in four Irish people suffer from, although the real numbers are likely to actually be much higher. The problem is, so many people still think there’s a stigma to admitting mental health issues and that is what he is setting out to change. He recently completed the first Dublin Iron Man, as part of a new documentary called Iron Mind, which takes people suffering from mental health issues and helps them through training – but starts with the mind and takes a holistic approach to it, rather than just focusing on the body. And that in itself is Bressie’s belief – that we need to be looking after ourselves in all areas to be wholly healthy, not just one aspect. Indeed he applauds the likes of Conor McGregor, and the recent surge in interest in MMA fighting. He says, “You look at Conor McGregor – everything he does, every last word that comes out of his mouth isn’t about physical training, it’s about his mental fitness, it’s about his positive psychology. Most interviews he starts with ‘I am incredibly thankful for,’ – that’s positive, that’s gratitude and he will tell you and so will his coach John Kavanagh that the reason he is as good as he is, isn’t because he’s a super human gifted athlete, with X-Mentype of strength. It’s because he works so closely on his mental fitness every single day.”

FESTIVAL FEVER Bressie is also involved in a new festival coming to the Herbert Park, Ballsbridge in September. It’s called WellFest, and was set up by his friend Anthony Kelly. He says, “Initially Anthony said it was all about fitness, and I said to him, ‘You do know that the most important part of fitness is the mind?’ Fitness comes second because you have to motivate yourself to become fit and that starts with the mind. So then he asked me if I would come on board, bring in some people to talk about it and do a talk myself and I said yes because it’s about holistic fitness – your body, your mind and even your soul.” Bressie thinks that Wellfest could become an annual event, because its roots are in treating people as individuals, and not “like robots, who all get motivated by some guy in a gym roaring. We don’t, we’re humans, we’re all different.” Bressie will be speaking about his own experiences in building resilience through mental health at the event. He first spoke out about his own struggles when he was experiencing panic attacks on The Voice live shows. “That panic attack was brought on by the fear of it happening on live TV and people having a perception of me and at that point I’d told everyone around me and I thought it’s time to stand by my word and help people. I’ve got a big responsibility to do something and that’s what I did.” From there Bressie started a blog which was launched into a website my1000hours.com to promote a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. He is also launching another website in early October (soon to be revealed) to engage with teenagers, and even offer free online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) sessions. “It’s basically to normalise the conversation. The most frustrating thing about mental health is it’s the most normal thing, and it’s so common and genuinely one in four of your friends are dealing with it.” Bressie himself is in a better place nowadays, and says he always felt that that if he was ever in a position to reach out or help other people that he’d do it. “The thing about it is there’s not

18 // #intallaght / TWEET US

The thing about it is there’s not an inch of me, not a cell in my body that’s ashamed of it. I’m actually quite thankful for what it did for me an inch of me, not a cell in my body that’s ashamed of it. I’m actually quite thankful for what it did for me, I turned it around and I’ve taken control back but there’s a lot of people out there who could be quite cynical about this and to be honest with you after what I’ve gone through personally, that cynicism is probably the easiest part to deal with. You become so resilient, so mentally strong, and that took me 15 years.” It was this very experience that led him to write his book, called Me and My Mate Jeffrey, out early September, about his own experiences of depression and anxiety, which he says would have helped him feel less isolated had he read it as a suffering teenager. He wanted to write a book that highlighted all the mistakes he made with his own mental health and how it would have been different if he’d been given the coping mechanisms, strategies and therapies he has now. “I feel that if we don’t incorporate mental health strategies into the education system now, we’re going to have a generation of people who are very ill because they’re dealing with things that even I didn’t have to deal with as a teenager, much more difficult things.” As if a documentary, a book and a festival weren’t enough, Bressie has also started rehearsing with his old band The Blizzards. He is a man of many trades, and shuns the idea that anyone has to have just one type of career. He

says, “My mother says to me, ‘Niall you have to just pick something,’ and I’m like, ‘Why?’ That’s the thing in Ireland –I think we feel we have to do that and even looking at the Leaving Cert results recently people are going ‘oh I have to do this, I have to do that’. I say ‘stop and fecking ask yourself why?’ Just because your mother’s friend thinks you’re a success because you go and study physiotherapy, it’s bullsh*t. “Success is doing something you like doing… We’ve a lot of people doing jobs that they don’t like that they don’t want to do, doing college degrees they don’t want to do. An example of that is I used to have a teacher in my school that used to always tell me, ‘Stop wasting your time at music, get a job’. And I remember he said the very same thing to Niall Horan, he was in the same school. So I was back in my school a while ago and I brought a newspaper with the headline saying ‘Niall Horan is worth €32 million’, and I just left it on his desk and I said, ‘Real waste of time for him, wasn’t it?’ Bressie says that Niall is quite inspiring for people from Mullingar as it shows people that you don’t have to do things the way others expect you to. “You can do things that society doesn’t deem as normal.” And that is exactly what Bressie is doing and doing well, and if it continues to benefit society as well as it has so far, well so much the better.

In this our second of three articles celebrating twenty-five years of The Square Shopping Centre we are looking at some of the biggest stories and changes to Tallaght and Ireland. In this edition we will be looking back to 2000; the millennium, the opening of the Civic Theatre and celebrating some of Tallaght’s most famous sons. 2000 was obviously the millennium when the ‘Millennium bug’ was going to wipe our computers and electronics, but thankfully that didn’t happen. The Summer Olympics were held this year in Sydney, Australia, where Irishwoman Sonia O’Sullivan picked up Ireland’s only medal at the games with a silver in the 5000m, running a national record time of 14:41:02. The outbreak of the foot and mouth disease in 2001 led to the culling of animals in Ireland and also the cancellation of the St Patrick’s Day Festival. However the festival was rescheduled to two months later in May. In 2002 the Republic of Ireland went to the World Cup in Korea and Japan, and following the controversial sending home of captain and talisman Roy Keane, the team were expected to falter. However having drawn their first game against Cameroon, and a last gasp equaliser by Robbie Keane against the Germans, the team could still progress. Following a three-nil victory of Saudi Arabia with Keane on the score sheet again, Ireland would then face Spain. Another Keane goal in the last minute brought the game to extra time before losing on a penalty shootout. In the same year electronic voting was used on a trial basis in three constituencies for the General Election and the Nice Treaty. Due to public opposition and political controversy the voting machines were scrapped.

They were put in storage and sold for €70,000, having cost €55 million. The population of Tallaght decreased when the census figures where revealed, going from 61,611 in 1996 to 60,215 in 2002. In 2003 Ireland hosted the Special Olympics from June 21st to 29th; this was also the first time that the games were held outside of the United States. There was a range of events including basketball which was held in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght, now The Arena. It was also in this year that local Tallaght politician Eamonn Maloney

began his work to have Tallaght recognised as a city. During this time South Dublin City Council adopted a motion seeking city status, however Tallaght has not been given city status yet – although Mr Maloney continues to try and secure it. Tallaght native and former WBF Feather Weight title holder Patrick Hyland made his professional boxing debut in 2004, defeating his opponent Dean Ward. During this time The Square saw an expansion of shops moving into the shopping centre and in 2001 the Square welcomed Specsavers into the centre.

2005-2009 by colm o’muirí

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

Continuing on to 2005-2009 even more businesses moved to the area, and Tallaght became a thriving hub of activity. In 2005 the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT), which was known as the Regional Technical College, changed its abbreviation to ITT Dublin. This was to differentiate itself from the Institute of Technology, Tralee and to avoid any confusions. Everybody loves a bit of dough but in 2006 we found out how much Tallaght loves it when The Sunday Times broke the news that the Dominos in The Square was its busiest in the world. The branch was the first in the company’s history to hit a turnover of $3m (€2.35m) a year. That’s one million pizzas a year or one pizza for every three minutes the shop is open! On Saturday October 14th, an estimated 4000 people took part in a march through Tallaght which was organised by the Mayor of South Dublin Eamonn Maloney in a campaign to protect the children’s services in the hospital. In April of 2008 the newly extended and renovated Tallaght Library was reopened to the public. The short-lived Marks and Spencer Tallaght opened in July of the same year, however it was closed down in 2013. Tallaght native and ex-Shamrock Rovers midfielder Keith Fahey made his Premier League debut on Sunday August 16th 2009 for Birmingham City in a one-nil loss to Manchester United in Old Trafford. Not only did they achieve promotion to the Premier League but they also won the Carling Cup in 2006 against Arsenal with Fahey playing 83 minutes at Wembley before being subbed for match winner Obafemi Martins. February 2009 saw the four-storey Rua Red arts centre opened which

features performance and rehearsal spaces and galleries amongst other things in the venue. On March 13th 2009 Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers played out the first game in Tallaght Stadium in front of a sell-out crowd of 3,500 and Gary Twigg became the first man to score in the stadium in a 2-1 win for Rovers. The ground wasn’t officially open until June 27th and on July 20th 10,915 people packed the stadium to watch its anchor tenants Shamrock Rovers narrowly beaten one-nil by Real Madrid. The Galácticos goal coming from Karim Benzema in the 88th minute, however the game will be remembered for being Cristiano Ronaldo’s debut for Real Madrid. When Marks and Spencer (July 19th 2008) and Captain Americas opened TALLAGHT STADIUM

premises in Tallaght Cross, located directly beside the Luas stop outside The Square it was hoped that this would become a new vibrant area for Tallaght. Fields Jewellers has been in the Square since 1990 however in 2007 they made the move to a bigger store on the premises. In our last edition celebrating twenty five years of The Square we will be looking at the years 2010-2015 and looking to the future of The Square. That edition will feature the return of a sorely missed presence in The Square, the inception of Tallaght’s most popular magazine and the first trip into Europe for an Irish football team. Still to come in the next edition: 2010-2015

Diary of A Soon-To-Be Bride by Gwen Taylour

________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGWEN

Our resident wedding planner and almost-bride Gwen takes us through the practicalities and dreams of planning her big day. I was never really the type of little girl to dream endlessly about the magical day when I’d get married to my Prince Charming wearing a big poofy white dress. The limits of my wedding planning up until a year or two ago amounted to a few practical concerns like the fact that due to my pale skin and nondescript hair colour, I look terrible in white and that long dresses make me look short. That being said, a lot of my fiancé Michael’s cousins have invited us to their weddings in the last few years. As we became a bit more secure in our relationship and the fact that we’re in it for the long haul, we started commenting to each other on the choices they had made for their big days. Smugly sitting among aisles of his relatives we’d whisper things like “We wouldn’t go for a church, would we?” and “That long veil looks really impractical, you couldn’t dance in that dress could you?” When our friends started getting married, mostly in civil ceremonies and with slightly less pomp and ceremony, we began agreeing that if/when we ever tied the knot, we’d try and make ours as fun as theirs. It’s all so easy when it’s hypothetical! Even if you’re not planning a wedding, certain elements of wedding culture creep into your Facebook feed, like elaborate proposal videos that have gone viral and photos of very sparkly new jewellery on the ring fingers of distant friends. Once it had been established that Michael and I would probably get married some day,

PHOTO © ELISHA CLARKE PHOTOGRAPHY. I’D DEFINITELY RECOMMEND DOING AN “ENGAGEMENT SHOOT” WITH YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. AS WELL AS ALLOWING YOU TO GET USED TO THEM JUST BEING AROUND THE TWO OF YOU, IT GIVES YOU AN INSIGHT INTO HOW INVASIVE OR NATURAL THEIR STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY FEELS FROM IN FRONT OF THEIR LENS. WE USED THIS PHOTO ON THE FRONT OF OUR WEDDING INVITATIONS.

I had expressed that if he were ever to propose, I wouldn’t want a song and dance (figuratively or literally) and that I’d be really embarrassed if he made everyone look at me in public. I also had it drilled into his head that I’d want to pick my own ring. Last August we were on holiday in Budapest just before my birthday and he asked me to find a nice fancy restaurant where we could have my “birthday dinner”. I booked the nicest place I could find and at the end of a five course meal, he produced a ring and surprised the life out of me. Once I got over the shock I of course agreed to marry him.

THE €20 RING WITH WHICH MICHAEL PROPOSED. I LOVE IT BUT AM DELIGHTED I GOT TO PICK MY OWN REAL RING.

If you’re just starting out on your wedding journey, it’s important to remember that most people take around a year to plan everything and that’s not just because there are a lot of things to consider and organise. A lot of venues, never mind wedding services like bands and photographers are booked up for events already. It can be a lot cheaper, and easier to book a wedding during the winter (as long as you give Christmas a wide berth) or else on Fridays or even during the week. For instance, we could have saved €10 per person attending the wedding by having it midweek. We also probably could have gotten an earlier date. While your wedding day should of course be all about you and what you want, you do have to take your guests into account. Having a midweek wedding means they have to take time off work and might mean fewer of your friends and family can make it to your big day. While this might

trim the guest list and make the event even cheaper, do you really want to risk some of the people you love being inconvenienced at best or missing out entirely at worst? We never considered a wedding abroad, though I can see how it would be attractive for some couples. Friends of ours got married in Spain a few years ago and it was a wonderful experience. They said the people that really wanted to be there made the effort and the lower numbers and cheaper costs meant they could have a much nicer wedding for the same price as a large bland affair here. As with everything to do with weddings it’s a very personal decision. For us, our ideal venue had to be in Dublin city, on good public transport links and have a beautiful function room as we’d be having our wedding ceremony in the same venue as the reception. We were looking at an initial guest list of at least 150 which meant some of the smaller venues were immediately out. Most of our friends live in Dublin so we really liked the idea that they could just get a taxi home afterwards. Speaking of the guest list, plus one’s can be a tricky area. You have to have a rough number of possible guests before you pick a venue, which would usually need to be around a year before you’re going to be getting married. Cousin Mary is single at the moment but what if she starts dating someone in a month? By the wedding she’d have been going out with him (or her) for 11 months. That surely would deserve an invite to the wedding? The same, even more so, goes for your single friends. In the end, our initial count of 150 spiralled up to a possible 190 or so, just because of all the possible plus one’s. This caused us a bit of stress as we weren’t sure the venue we wanted would accommodate everyone. Luckily we just hadn’t checked properly, as we’d told them we’d have around 150 they didn’t bother to mention they could fit 196 at a squeeze. Remember to ask these

COLOUR-CODED GOOGLE DRIVE DOCUMENTS ARE A GREAT WAY TO KEEP TRACK OF RSVPS, WHICH WE RECEIVED THROUGH EMAIL AND TEXT. THE OPTION TO “SHARE” THE FILE WITH YOUR PARTNER MAKES IT GREAT!

questions as you view venues, or even as you’re researching them online. It’ll save stress down the road. In the end, a lot of the cousins stayed single until the 170 invitations went out. It’s hard to predict how much your number will drop off but a decent rule of thumb is at least around 10% won’t be able to make it. Due to quite a few cousins and aunts and uncles living abroad we have 142 positive RSVPs and we’re quite happy with that. There are a few that I wish could come, like my brother-in-law, niece and nephew who live in Africa, but at least my sister is able to make the trip. Not everyone can go to every wedding and apparently the whole day is such a blur you won’t even get to chat to half the people who are there so try not to let any negative RSVPs get you down. The internet is a wonderful resource for wedding inspiration. My favourite ‘wedspiration’ websites are onefabday.com/ie, weddingsonline. ie and mrs2be.ie, and for the more alternative bride I love the American website offbeatbride. com. The first three all have plenty of solid information as well, with links to venues and suppliers that they recommend. The choice can be staggering but we put certain parameters on our search which helped narrow things down. For instance, our venue had to be in Dublin city, the quality of the cake had be given priority over the beauty of the icing. Some of our decisions were inspired by other weddings we’d attended, like our wedding band, j90

who we’d seen play some time before but were so impressed by that Michael asked them for their business card on the spot. When planning your budget you really have to decide on the things that you care most about. For us, music was really important. Having expensive bridesmaid dresses and party favours was not. Speaking of bridesmaids and of course groomsmen, bear in mind that before you ask anyone if they’d do you the honour, that each extra person in the wedding party is a big expense. I ended up buying each of my bridesmaids the following: 50’s style dress, separate petticoat, short black cardigan, low black heels, small black handbag, black bow belt and a black bow hair clip. None of these things were exorbitant on their own but when you’re buying four of everything the costs stack up quickly. I’d always said that I’d let my bridesmaids choose their own dresses, something knee length on the teal/ turquoise colour spectrum. But when it came down to it, I wanted the style of their dresses to match my wedding gown and I found myself impatient to get everything organised nice and early. The style they’ll be wearing will look good on all of them, or at least I think so, but then I do already own two versions of that exact 50’s dress in different colours so I may be a little biased.

THE DRESS AND HEELS I’M MAKING MY FOUR BRIDESMAIDS WEAR

MY DRESSMAKER’S INITIAL SKETCH

I had quite specific expectations for my wedding dress: knee length, decent sleeves and 50’s style. While I did try on a few that fit those specifications in bridal shops, I ended up getting mine made by a dressmaker who specialises in wedding dresses. Wedding magazines are great for getting a feel for the type of dress you think you want. The photoshoots set a mood and show what kind of accessories go well with the different looks. Those ‘wedspiration’ websites can be great too as they show real women on their wedding days. Whether you’re very short or very tall, slim or plus-size, they’ll hopefully show you what works best on different figures. I found it really useful to be able to look up what other short-haired brides did to make their hair look bridal. I’ve gone for a bird-cage veil and a sparkly vintage rhinestone hairband over my chinlength bob as a result. Another invaluable wedding resource is of course Pinterest. If you’ve never heard of this service, it’s basically an online pin-board when you can save all the pretty pictures you like the look of. It’s an easy way of building a mood board for the styles and colours and fabrics and textures that you want to include in your big day. There are some stunningly beautiful weddings online and you do have to remember that a lot of them are styled shoots from wedding magazines or that everyone has different budgets for their weddings. Take Pinterest wedding boards with a touch of salt and don’t get struck down with what has been

called “Pinterest paralysis”. There are so many different options and the standard that it sets can be so difficult to attain that the inspiration overload makes you feel overwhelmed and unable to make a decision as to what you want for your own wedding. I found the best way through was to find something you know you like and run with it. So what if you don’t have everything that you pinned? No one else will know what you think is “missing” from the room decor or from your floral displays. I’ve found the faster I make up my mind and get something organised the more relaxed about the whole thing I’ve become. Within reason of course. I’ve done fairly thorough research into most things but once I see an option within our budget that I’m happy with, the sooner it’s checked off our list the better! There are less than six weeks left to my wedding day and I feel like I’ve been finished the bulk of the organisation for months. There are certain big things that need to be secured early on but keep plugging away at the finer details once they’re sorted, and even though there’s so much more to be organised than I’d ever considered, we’ve found the whole process fairly easy and stressfree. My groom-to-be, Michael, has been really helpful, he’s been involved in all the big decisions but has left a few of the smaller ones entirely to me, like the cake and the invitation design. He’s had more of a definite opinion on a lot of the other decisions though. I actually think we’re more likely to end up with a Groomzilla than a Bridezilla, such is his enthusiasm for the role. He loves the limelight and can’t wait for a day that’s all about him! One last thing that I think is important to say is that everyone’s looking for different things from their own wedding. As long as you’re happy with what you’re planning, don’t let other people’s opinions stand in your way. If you’re happy with how the day goes, that’s all that matters!

How technology can help you with your wedding planning ________________________ PERSONALISED WEDDING WEBSITES Since I’m a graphic designer by trade I obviously designed our own wedding website but there are plenty of good free options out there online. Wedding websites generally include: a space for your story, your wedding day schedule, a giftlist (if you have one), information on your venue, how to get there, accommodation and a RSVP function. It can really cut down on the details you need on your printed invites, just give them the basics and then your URL. Some sites to try: weddingwire.com theknot.com mywedding.com

ONLINE RSVPS Traditionally people would usually post out a small “RSVP” card with their invitations and a stamped addressed envelope in which to return it. Save yourself some money and your guests a trip to the post office, get them to RSVP on your website or just by email/text.

WEDPICS WedPics is a free website that allows you to provide guest information and collect all of your guests’ photos and videos into one private location. It’s a free alternative to disposable cameras too! We’re having the details on the tables at the wedding and hopefully lots of guests will share photos through it. wedpics.com Best of luck and enjoy every second!

My three Top Tips and go-to products to enhance any bride’s big day: D[ OCT[ æV\IGTCNF

__________________ MARY-FITZGERALD-MAKEUP

1) USE A PRIMER Mineralise Time Check Lotion by Mac. This product hydrates, blurs lines and visibly shrinks pores. This is a key product in making sure the makeup lasts until all hours of the morning. The best way to apply it is to massage it into the skin in an upward prayer-like motion to really activate your skin and have it at its best.

2) LENGTHEN LASHES Mascara plays such an important part of your makeup. I don’t think it’s given enough credit until it’s done right and you can really see what it does! For me it’s all in the technique.

Make sure you’re getting from root to tip. I like to curl the brush outwards while dragging it through the lash to make sure each lash is covered. I think with mascara it’s also really important to get the right one so you’re comfortable with the size and type of the wand. My favourite mascara is False Lash by Mac and Lancôme’s Hypnosose Doll Eyes. Also wearing a waterproof mascara is a good idea for the emotional speeches.

3) PUCKER UP Last, but by no means least, is lipstick. This for me plays the most crucial part. It ties together the whole look. It’s so important to have your lips looking their best so keep them hydrated with a balm or primer. A pencil will help hold the lipstick longer. Again it’s important to go and try out a few. My two favourites are Faux and Viva Glam 1, both by Mac. Faux is a beautiful natural pink nude which enhances the colour that’s already there. Viva Glam 1 is a deep blood red. A classic red lip has definitely come back and is just stunning when done right! You can contact Mary via Facebook or on 087 793 0558.

Duties of A Bridesmaid - Before The Big Day by genna patterson

________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

As a first-time bridesmaid for my sister I wasn’t sure what to expect and what would be expected of me. After some research and indeed the experience of the year up to the wedding, I have made a list of duties to consider before the big day. • First, text the bride every few days to see if you can do anything, and daily if she’s in the midst of making some of the bigger decisions like venues or the wedding dress. She will appreciate having a sounding board to talk things through.

• Offer to go to all or as many of the following as you can: wedding fairs, venues, dress shops, flower shops, shoe shops, hairdressers, make up artists, photographers, band auditions etc etc. If there are more than one of you as bridesmaids, you can split these amongst you unless the bride wants all of you there! • T ake the bride out for nonwedding events like coffee or drinks to take her mind off any wedding stress. A manicure or pedicure or even a movie can be nice distractions and will help you relax too. • Help with as much organisation of the hen night as you can, and ensure you plan ahead for any decorations, costumes or games; most are cheaper if you buy online, but if you leave it to the last minute

and buy from a party shop you’ll end up paying twice the price! • Don’t complain about ANYTHING. Even if you don’t like your dress, the colour scheme or worst of all, the bride’s dress, keep it to yourself. It’s helping nobody to be negative! • E njoy the process, lots of it can be fun and a great way to bond with the bride, whether she’s a friend or family member.

The Best Man’s Speech by colm mcglade (Toastmaster) __________________ The best man’s speech is generally regarded as the highlight and is the most anticipated one at a wedding. Traditionally it is the final speech of the day and is expected to be entertaining. The best man usually “roasts” the groom, telling jokes and funny anecdotes that poke fun at him. However, it’s advisable not to take this too far, avoiding saying anything that the best man wouldn’t want anyone to know if it were about himself. Try to add something poignant and touching also.

THE SPEECH ITSELF: • Thank the groom for having chosen you to be his best man. Also thank him for his kind words about the bridal party and for his toast to the bridesmaids. • Tell everyone how you first met the groom, unless of course he happens to be your brother. Tell funny stories, jokes, and anecdotes about him, but don’t tell too many. If you go on too long, you run the risk of boring your audience. Balance this with expressions of friendship, from the heart. • Tell a couple of humorous anecdotes about the bride. You could recount the first time you met her and the very positive effects she has had on the groom – also, how happy you are that they both have found each other. • Read out any cards, telegrams/ texts and messages from friends and family who haven’t been able to attend.

• Finally, propose a toast to the bride and groom. If there is no M.C., you could announce the cutting of the cake.

SPEECH WRITING TIPS • Use short words and short sentences. This makes it easier for you to deliver and for the audience to follow. Use ordinary words which are used in everyday conversation. Keep it simple. • Use words which paint pictures for your audience. • Include dialogue in your stories. • Do not go on too long. Leave the audience wanting more. Less is more.

YOUR DELIVERY • Speak slowly and clearly. • Use pause where appropriate for impact. • Project your voice so everyone can hear you clearly. If you will be using a hand held microphone, practise with one.

• Smile. • Take everyone in with eye contact. • Try not to read the speech. The best speeches are a conversation with the audience, not a reading. Internalise it and practise, practise, practise. • If you do need notes, use bullet points to guide you through the speech. Index cards are ideal for this. • Practise in front of a full length mirror. You communicate with your body. Body language, nonverbal communication – eg. your appearance, stance, hand gestures, eye contact and facial expression, are all hugely important.

COLM MC GLADE Colm is a public speaking coach. He has been a member of Toastmasters International for 21 years. He is available to assist with wedding speeches. Call or email him on 087 6687464 / colm.mcglade@upcmail.ie

Duties of A Bridesmaid - On The Day by genna patterson

________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

When my older sister asked me to be her bridesmaid, I was delighted, but that quickly turned to concern as I didn’t know what was expected of me. Here are some wedding day tips I learned from being a bridesmaid: • Wake up before the bride and bring her a cup of tea or coffee in bed. Even if you have a whole breakfast planned, a cuppa in bed is a nice start and will put her in a good mood before she has time to stress about what is to be done before she can walk down the aisle.

• Ensure you have a stock of Rescue Remedy/brandy to calm the nerves. Also have spares of hair pins, safety pins, shoe inserts, plasters, and anything else you think you will need! If you haven’t broken in your bridesmaid shoes, bring a spare pair in a neutral colour for later on once the dancing kicks off and your feet start to hurt…I didn’t and ended up in my bare feet! • Whatever mood the bride is in, be agreeable and do whatever she asks. Almost all brides have a moment or five of ‘Bridezilla’, and it’s important to remember that all she wants is for her day to be perfect, as would you, so have patience. • Glue yourself to the bride or take it in turns with other bridesmaids to do so – she may need someone to

help her with her dress train, veil, going to the bathroom (if her dress is large!) or even to grab her a glass of water between welcoming guests. Whatever she needs, be there for her. • Make an effort to talk to the guests from both sides and help them interact with each other. Also be prepared to start the dancing, and keep going for five songs so that others join in. • D on’t complain about anything. The bride has enough to deal with (nerves) without having to worry that her bridesmaids are happy. If a problem does arise, deal with it with the other bridesmaids and keep it quiet if you can. • Have fun! Above all, enjoy yourself. Your joyfulness will rub off on everyone and help to make the special day a memorable one.

Straight Outta Compton by RACHEL LYNCh @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

___________________________ It’s set to be one of the biggest films of 2015 and so far it’s the best film I have seen of the year. Straight Outta Compton is a true success story about a real survival. I went into this film with no interest in rap or the hip hop group N.W.A that features in it, but as soon as I left I had downloaded their album to my phone. The biographical movie is set in 1988 around a groundbreaking new group who all originate from Compton, California. All have had their fair share of issues growing up and relations with their own community of people and the police is at boiling point. With the drug trade the only source of income for many of the young teenagers in Compton five lads get together to persue their love of rap. Little did band members Ice Cube, Dr.Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren know that what they had started would revolutionise and influence hip-hop forever. N.W.A’s first studio album, Straight Outta Compton stirs controversy with its brutally honest depiction of life in Southern Los Angeles. With guidance from veteran manager Jerry Heller the band sign contracts which splits a few of the members and it’s only a matter of time before they all go their separate ways. I can’t explain just how surprised I was by this film, regardless of whether you love rap or not it’s a true story of just how much you can achieve when you put your mind to it.

Hitman: Agent 47 by RACHEL LYNCh

__________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

A movie based on the Hitman video game series. Ok so Hitman: Agent 47 will remind you of any Terminator films just with not as much substance to the story. He’s the perfect killing machine who was genetically engineered from conception to become the perfect assassin. After years of research Agent 47 (Rupert Friend-Homeland) is

gifted with strength, speed, stamina and intelligence. His latest project is to take down a corporation that plans to unlock the secret of his past to create an army of killers even more powerful than him but this would spell disaster for earth. Agent 47 teams up with a woman and together they aim to take down the terrorist group based in Singapore. Hitman: Agent 47 sounds actionpacked and it is but it needs a whole lot more to compare to films with similar plots like Terminator. It’s an enjoyable hour and half and I found myself engrossed throughout with the high-speed chases and deathdefying stunts. Hitman: Agent 47 isn’t terrible and it’s probably one of the best films out there that is based on a videogame over the last few years but it isn’t as exciting as the trailer would lead you to believe.

An intense and exhilarating movie of epic proportions

A poignant and heartwarming story of friendship. From the trailer alone you know Miss You Already is set to be the ultimate tearjerker. The story follows lifelong best friends Milly (Toni Collette) and Jess (Drew Barrymore) who have shared everything since they were young children. Both have lived very different lives; Milly has her dream job and lives in a townhouse with her husband and their two children. Jess on the other hand, lives with her boyfriend on a houseboat on the London canal. Although both friends seem to be living their own dream they are both hit with devastating news – Milly has just found out that she has breast cancer.

This film is exactly what you would expect, it’s emotional yet it also tells the tale of just how powerful friendships can be at the darkest of times. Although Milly is the one ultimately whose life has fallen apart, Jess has her own heartaches along the way.

No Escape is possibly the most intense and stressful movie I have watched in a long time. It tells the story of an American family who move to Southeast Asia and within 24 hours are being hunted by rebels trying to overthrow the government. Jack Dwyer (Owen Wilson) has moved his family abroad to take a job as an engineer with a water company called Cardiff, which the locals are unhappy about. Following the assassination of the prime minister, the rebels want to eliminate all those involved with Cardiff including Jack, his wife Annie (Lake Bell) and their two young daughters. What follows is the most terrifying game of hide and seek as Jack and his family are chased

throughout the city and are pushed to their limits emotionally and physically while trying to stay alive. Pierce Brosnan plays an English ally who helps the family out of one horrendous situation after another, and is quite at home playing a sleazy but likeable character. In fact he is more bad-ass in this movie that he ever was while playing James Bond! No Escape will have your heart racing and you won’t even realise you’ve been holding your breath until the end when the credits roll. An absolute must-see for thriller fans.

A Walk In the Woods by genna patterson

___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

A Walk in the Woods is a sweet, heartwarming tale of friendship and self discovery. Starring Robert Redford (The Horse Whisperer), Nick Nolte (The Warrior) and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr Banks), the movie is based on a book of the same name and is a true story by American travel writer Bill Bryson. Redford plays Bill who, after a friend’s funeral decides to hike the Appalachian Trail in search of adventure. When his wife Catherine (Thompson) won’t let him

go alone because he is “too old”, Bill calls around old friends to get a hiking buddy, but no one wants to go. That is until his old travel friend Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte) invites himself along. Katz is out of shape and an alcoholic, but the only one who will go, so Bill agrees. What follows is a funny, sweet and slightly dangerous trek across the trail as the two encounter other hikers, snow and wild animals on their quest. Redford is as always, excellent and very convincing in the role, while Nolte, initially quite off-putting, slowly gains likability as the movie goes on. A lovely, sweet movie for all the family.

Me and earl and the dying girl by genna patterson

___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

A wry coming of age movie for all those who question social norms. Me and Earl and The Dying Girl is a sweet and wryly funny movie about a high school senior called Greg (Thomas Mann), who spends his time ‘surviving’ school by never quite making real friends. Instead he floats between groups and never truly engages, just so he won’t get on the wrong side of anybody. He does however, have one friend called Earl, whom he refers to as his co-worker as the two make parodies of classic movies in their spare time. Greg’s world changes when his mother insists he befriends a classmate, Rachel (Olivia Cooke), who has been diagnosed with leukaemia. At first both are resistant to the friendship but the two hit it off after a while and throughout her illness

Greg is there to cheer her up. Unfortunately so much so that his schoolwork starts to suffer. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a truly beautiful and quirky story. If you liked Dan In Real Life or Lars and The Real Girl, this will be right up your alley. While it could have been predictable and a run-of-the-mill sob-fest, this movie is honest and heartwarming and a joy to watch throughout.

The film tackles loneliness and solitude through the perspective of a 50-something woman as she deals with the mundane nature of her life and friends. The only morsel of happiness she can conjure up is when her son comes to visit but that’s a rarity. Something needs to change for this single mother whose only son has fled the nest a long time ago. The cast includes Sarah Jane Lynch, Gareth Higgins, Andie McCaffrey Byrne, and Rex Ryan, and the film picked up eight nominations.

Conor McGregor has added two more tattoos to his chest by rachel lynch ________________________ Lana Del Rey Announces Release Date For New Album, ‘Honeymoon’ by edward lam ____________________________ Lana Del Rey has promised to release her new album Honeymoon next month. It looks like the pop songstress will stay true to her word, as she’s now confirmed a September 18th release date for her Ultraviolence follow-up. She said on an Instagram post: “My new album Honeymoon is released on September 18. Pre-order it now and get the brand new song Terrence Loves You straight away.” In a separate Instagram post, Del Rey revealed the album’s 14song tracklist. The closing track is a previously teased cover of Nina Simone’s Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.

Conor McGregor has revealed his latest tattoo to the world through his Twitter account. Conor who is known for his wild inkings in the past, particularly the artwork across his chest, seemed pleased with his latest addition. It’s a somewhat eclectic mix and it’s hard to believe that he even found space on his body to add the new two-piece which run both on top and below his tiger tattoo and reads ‘McGregor’ and ‘Notorious’. He uploaded the picture in late August with the caption “I got more ink”. We are sure this won’t be the last tattoo we see Conor sporting although we’re not quite sure where he will fit the next one!

the strypes Little Victories by linn therese heldal

___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTLINN

So, is the second full-length release really a little victory as The Strypes strive to move away from their 1960’s Rock’n’Roll, retromania roots and into a more contemporary sound? As expected Little Victories is more confident than the predecessor and debut album Snapshot. It seems like the Blues-Rock nostalgia has been and gone and is now replaced with early Artic Monkeys indie influences. The band is tighter and musically they are progressing brilliantly. The puzzle is that, although the sound has been taken into the future, it still lacks an original expression. They might have focused on different musical influences on the new effort, but they still shine through so brightly that it almost becomes a tribute album to the lads’ musical heroes. It’s no secret that The Strypes are heavily influenced by the craft of the rock legends of the past and there is nothing wrong with paying tribute, but in these One Direction and The

70 // #intallaght / TWEET US

Vamps times it would be nice to see some youngsters trying out more of their own sound. They have more than proven their four great talents as a live act, so this is something that The Strypes definitely have the tools to do. They are already much better musically than many older bands. Little Victories was produced by the two legends Bradley Spence and Charlie Russell, who between them have worked with giants such as Black Sabbath, Coldplay, Radiohead and Iron Maiden. Before you could say Jack Robinson, Little Victories was No. 1 on the Irish Charts and in the process it knocked Ed Sheeran off the top. Groove is the word to describe the anthemic kick-ass opener Get Into It which has an opening with similarities to Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song. The youthful enthusiasm, dirty bass, harmonica solos and the overall drive of the song is completely contagious. I Need To Be Your Only is lyrically no more advanced than “She’s the bag / She’s the leaf / She’s the sugar/ The full cup baby like no other.” It might suggest that he digs the dream girl just as much as he digs his cuppa. The girl stories continues on A Good Night’s Sleep And A Cab Fare Home, which has a wicked groove with Ross Farrelly’s snarled vocals over a Hammond organ. Eighty-Four, which might be based on the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four

They might have focused on different OWUKECN KPçWGPEGU on the new effort, but they still shine through so brightly that it almost becomes a tribute album to the lads’ musical heroes from 1949, has early Artic Monkey influences, while Queen Of The Half Crown has a clear Oasis resemblance. The ballad Everyday has some impressive guitar licks coming from Josh McClorey and the intro has a clear similarity to George Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Best Man shows they have some development to do in the lyrical department with lines like: “No only my night out / But every night is my night out / Cause it’s just so easy.” The bluesy, swampy shake in Status Update has a wailing harmonica and a raw guitar. The Strypes have already shown how they can imitate the sound of their idols so remarkably trustworthily, so in the future it will be very interesting to see some of their own distinct character. It’s very hard to rock out anymore without showing some influences and although it’s limited how exciting Little Victories can be, even in its greatness, this is after all only The Strypes’ second release. There is no doubt about their talent as musicians and big things are to be expected for the Cavan quartet.

Jess Glynne Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself by linn therese heldal

___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTLINN

She seemed to appear out of the blue when as a completely unknown name, she popped up on Clean Bandit’s No. 1 hit single Rather Be. Since then she has really had the Midas touch and is now the second British female solo artist after Cheryl Cole to have five number-one singles. Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself is the fifth and last single release from the suitably titled album I Cry When I Laugh. It’s a feel-good song where she sings about heartbreak again, but it’s filled with the returning theme of hope and belief. She gives an insight into her thoughts

and soul and motivates the listener to: “Don’t be so hard on yourself, no / Learn to forgive, learn to let go / Everyone trips, everyone falls / So don’t be so hard on yourself, no.” And there is also some self-assuredness when she pushes away the darkness: “I never knew where I belonged / But I was right and you were wrong / Been telling myself all along.” She sings over house, pop and dance beats on this disco-influenced anthem. Although Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself is not up there with Rather Be and Real Love, it’s still a catchy, euphoric tune with its piano riffs, her raspy voice and the clapped beat. There is a genuineness in her personality and real optimism about Jess Glynne that sets her aside from many other of today’s pop-divas.

TEDX TALLAGHT Now in its sixth year TEDx Tallaght returns to the Civic Theatre this October with an event entitled TEDx Tallaght: Considered Perspectives. by colm o’muirí @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

For those of you who are not aware of TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) it is a set of conferences in which people take to a stage and give a speech on any number of topics. The speakers have a maximum of 18 minutes to give a speech in an entertaining and engaging way, from science to culture and anything in between. TEDx Tallaght will take place on Wednesday October 14th in the Civic Theatre. Some of the world’s most famous celebrities and politicians have taken part in TED, with people such as the former president of the United States Bill Clinton being an alumni of TED Talks, as well as the English Musician/ Record Producer Mark Ronson. Bono, the founders of Google Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Gordon Brown, Keith Barry, Stephen Hawkins and countless others have all graced the TED stage at one time or another to give an insightful speech or presentation on a subject they are passionate about.

72 // #intallaght / TWEET US

Due to the phenomenon and the sudden growth in popularity that is TED talks since they became free and available online in June 2006, TEDx was created and in December 2014 the viewing figure of all the videos stood at 500 million. TEDx are independent TED events which are organised by people/groups/

TED speakers have a maximum of 18 minutes to give a speech in an entertaining and engaging way, from science to culture and anything in between

colleges who have a free license from TED, so long as they agree to follow certain principles. Some of those principles are that the event must be non-profit, however admission fees are allowed to cover costs, speakers must not be paid, and that all copyrights and materials are relinquished to TED so that they may edit and distribute them under a creative commons license. This year’s TEDx Tallaght will feature nine different speakers from a range of different backgrounds and the speakers are: Eoin Lowry, Stephen Dignam, Shourjya Sanyal, Bobbie Hickey, Monini Gadre, Colin Guilfoyle, Anna Roe, Carol Conway and Peter Maeck. InTallaght recently caught up with three of the speakers from this year’s event; Anna Roe, Bobbie Hickey and Colin Guilfoyle. Anna has a first class honours degree, however after studying for years she began to doubt herself and now, following her own path she is a happier, well-travelled person who believes in connection with others. Meanwhile Bobbie Hickey was born blind, however after over 50

operations can now see three feet ahead of her and at 16 she is now Ireland’s first RIB licence holder (which is a driver’s licence for speed boats). She also does work for the Soar Foundation which is an outstanding youth-based organisation – all this and she only recently began fifth year in school! Another interesting speaker is Colin Guilfoyle, an accountant by qualification who founded his own company Nebula Interactive Game Studio, which publish their own games as well as building beautiful apps for a range of customers. Although the event is over a month away all three have provisional titles for their speeches with Colin’s entitled Giving Through Gaming. He says his talk will “be about the changing face of charity and how there is a need to reinvent how money is raised (and spent) within charities. My focus will be on using gaming as a method of raising funds and awareness through mobile games.” He said the reason why he chose this topic is because “it’s a topic very close to my heart, I’ve worked with quite a few Not-For-Profits and charities in the past (and currently) and I wanted to show what can be achieved when you think outside the box and use modern technology to generate awareness and funds.” He hopes to show this different perspective on the day with the help of a game they are creating at the minute entitled Kesho Town. He wants to use screens on the day to “allow the audience to experience what they would feel using our way of gaming/ giving.” Colin is the only one of the three who has not been to a TED event before, with both Bobbie and Anna attending TEDx Tallaght last year, and Anna having attended a couple of live events in the past. Anna’s speech for this year will be about “exploring and discussing the idea of living from the heart space in a head-centred society; exploring the idea of thinking versus feeling in everyday life.” She is quick to point out that this is still a work in progress,

however her speech is tentatively entitled The Head to Head journey. Explaining why she chose this subject Anna believes “that we all spend far too much time and energy in our heads, concerned about what others think of us and how we are perceived by those around us.” She continues, “Constant worry and the ‘monkey mind’ eventually leads to becoming disconnected from ourselves, from the heart and in turn, from others. I feel this subject may serve as a little reminder for us all to enjoy, connect, and feel everyday – an invitation to calm the monkey mind!” Bobbie, who has done public speaking before through her work with the Soar Foundation is working on a version of a speech which she has given before, however she has sworn us to secrecy over its title! She did however explain that the speech is “about positivity – her life, positivity and strength and how strong you can be.” She says, “After everything I went through, believing in yourself and being positive is key, because the more positive you are, the more that you can do.” Bobbie has many ideas for the speech, which sounds amazing when she talks about it, and she is quick to add that she is excited to do a TED Talk, especially at 16 years old. “I am stressed about structuring it, however now that I have bullet points I am more excited about doing it.” Trying not to give anything away about her speech as she cannot wait to give it on October 14th, she does say that for every point she makes that if time allows it she’ll have a brick for every point for illustration, however that is all she will say. To see the finished article we will have to be in attendance on the night. For those of you who would like to see Bobbie’s speech, and everyone else’s, tickets are available from the Civic Theatre. Tickets are priced at €12/€10 and are selling fast so get them now to avoid disappointment. For more information on the event visit TEDxTallaght.com.

GAME

Fifa 16 by colm o’muirí

___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

FIFA 16 is a soon-to-be released football (soccer) video game brought to you by developers EA Canada and published by EA Sports. There is only one place to start when looking at the new FIFA game and that is for the very first time that female footballers will be playable in the game. It is also the first time that female football stars will grace the cover of the game with Alex Morgan appearing on the cover in America, Christine Sinclair in Canada and Steph Catley in Australia. All three will share the cover with Messi who again returns to the cover of all games and in the UK and Ireland version he shares it with Jordan Henderson. There will be 12 female football teams to choose from in FIFA, all of them national teams and they include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, and the United States. Unfortunately there is no place for the Irish team and Stephanie Roche, however with this being the first game to feature women’s teams it is sure to improve in years to come. FIFA 166 includes 78 stadiums, with 50 of them being realworld football

venues. Fans of Portsmouth Football Club will be pleased to hear that Fratton Park will be in the game. EA Sports decided to include it as a tribute to their creative director who was a fan of the club and who passed away this year. FIFA recently announced also that they have begun a partnership with Real Madrid to be their official video game partner. To celebrate this, 14 of Real Madrid’s most popular players underwent updated 3D head scans to improve their likeness in the game. Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez, Luka Modric and Karim Benzema are just four of those players who took part so check out the images on the FIFA website to see what you think. FIFA 16 will be available across all consoles as well as on the PC and the game is set for release on September 24th. Forza Motorsport 6 by colm o’muirí

a visually __________________________ stunning game Following on from the hugely with breathtaking successful and widely praised fifth instalment from 2013, graphics in 1080p Forza Motorsport 6 will have and 60 frames big shoes to fill, and it just might do it. per second @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

This is a visually stunning game with breathtaking graphics in 1080p and 60 frames per second that make the 450 cars at your disposal really stand out. Those 450 cars are available from the launch date, which is more than double the number of cars which were available in Forza 5. Although a lot of the cars are ones that have appeared in earlier versions of Forza each one has been redesigned and rebuilt specifically for the Xbox One. This means that everything from the cockpits and gauges, as well as the interiors and exteriors have been essentially remastered for Forza 6, like going from DVD to Blu Ray. Forza 6 will feature 26 world famous tracks, with all of the tracks from Forza 5 returning for the latest installment in the franchise. However Rio De Janeiro, Daytona, Watkins Glen, and Brands Hatch are all new tracks to the Forza series. The game will also feature the

latest Indianapolis track which was recaptured and rebuilt specifically for this game after the the real track underwent renovations in 2014. The game features new Forza Race Leagues along with online spectating for the online multiplayer in this game. Another feature are the epic 24-player races which can be undertaken in your ‘campaign mode’ as well as online through Xbox Live. Following on from the underwhelming car racing games that have come out in recent months such as the latest F1 game, Forza 6 looks to deliver across the board for anyone who enjoys video gaming racers. Forza Motorsport 6 is an Xbox one exclusive and it will be available to purchase in Ireland from September 18th. It will retail at €69.99 in both Gamestop and HMV/Xtravision. However the game is available for €64.99 in Smyths Toys Superstore.

A GUIDE TO BER RATINGs from SUSTAINABLE ENERGY AUTHORITY IRELAND ____________________________ This month InTallaght examines the Building Energy Rating (BER), and how it impacts your home heating expenses.

WHAT IS A BER? A Building Energy Rating (BER) Certificate is an indication of the energy performance of a home. A BER certificate is accompanied by an Advisory Report which identifies how you might improve the energy performance of your home. BER is the calculated energy use for space and hot water heating, ventilation and lighting based on standard occupancy. A BER is similar to the energy label for a household electrical appliance like your fridge. The label has a scale of A-G. A-rated homes are the most energy efficient and will tend to have the lowest energy bills. A BER is compulsory for all homes offered for sale or rent. A BER is also required before a new home is occupied for the first time. There are exemptions for certain categories of homes, for example, protected structures.

78 // #intallaght

Advertisements must include BER details when a home is offered for sale or rent. If you are buying or renting a house or apartment, you are entitled to a BER so ask the seller, landlord or agent for it. BER assessments are completed by registered BER Assessors who have been trained under the National Framework of Qualifications, passed the SEAI BER Assessor exam and have registered with SEAI.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO IMPROVE A BER? The advisory report which accompanies the BER certificate contain recommendations on how to improve the energy performance of the dwelling.

Building energy performance options might include measures such as: • Insulating the hot water cylinder and pipework • Increasing the insulation in the walls/attic/floor • Installing advanced energy efficient glazing measures to achieve controlled healthy ventilation • Replacing an old or inefficient boiler with a more efficient boiler • Installing modern heating controls • Installing certain types of renewable energy heating systems. For more information see seai.ie/Your_Building/BER/

BOOK

AUTHOR DAVID NICHOLLS

us by Gwen Taylour

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGWEN

With Author and screenwriter David Nicholls writing the latest Bridget Jone’s movie Bridget Jone’s Baby, due for release in 2016, we looked at his book Us, released last year. Having recently read the very popular book that has since been turned into a film, One Day by David Nicholls, I was eager to read his most recent novel, simply entitled Us. As you may already know, in the former Nicholls had deftly captured not only the passing of time but also the gradual development of characters and eventual love through visiting the same two people every year on the same date for 20 years, so I wondered whether this story would be similarly interesting in structure.

80 // #intallaght / TWEET US

In this I was certainly not disappointed. Whereas One Day slowly builds up to a great love story, Us marks the end of one. ‘I was looking forward to us growing old together. Me and you, growing old and dying together.’ ‘Douglas, who in their right mind would look forward to that?’ This is the conversation that follows Connie Petersen waking her husband Douglas in the middle of the night to tell him that when their son Albie leaves for college in a few weeks, she’d like to move out too. She says she “wants to feel this is the beginning of something new, not the beginning of the end.” After nearly three decades of marriage, this comes as quite a blow to Douglas. From an outside perspective it seems strange that this couple lasted so long. Connie is an artist, a free spirit and Douglas is a logical, scientific type.

As we travel back to when they first met, it’s clear how unbelievably lucky he felt to be even talking to someone as beautiful and passionate as her. As we learn the story of how they fell in love, it is interspersed with scenes from their marriage now falling apart. The two would seem at complete odds with each other but it’s clear from Douglas’s narration how much he still loves his wife and how even when he appears bumbling and says the wrong thing, he means the best and you do root for her to change her mind. The main drama of the piece occurs when they decide to go through with a last family holiday, dubbed “The Grand Tour”, a modern version of the trip young rich men would have made through Europe when they were Albie’s age. Except his parents want to go with him, to show him the great sights and monuments, acting as his guides to culture and history. While their son is not mad on this idea, he puts up with it to get a free holiday. So when Connie announces that she will be leaving, too, he resolves to make their last family holiday into the trip of a lifetime: one that will draw the three of them closer, and win the respect of his son. One that will make Connie fall in love with him all over again. The hotels are booked, the tickets bought, the itinerary planned and printed. What could go wrong? I really enjoyed this book and found it refreshing to read a love story from the perspective of a middle aged male scientist. It’s well written and if you liked One Day I’d recommend you definitely give it a go.

WRITERS CORNER

Celebrating Yeats Ireland is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Nobel Prize-winning poet, William Butler Yeats this year. We at InTallaght Magazine love a good Yeats poem, and have selected one of our favourites here below from The Collected Poems of W. B. Yeats (1989).

Adam’s Curse by WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS ____________________ We sat together at one summer’s end, That beautiful mild woman, your close friend, And you and I, and talked of poetry. I said, ‘A line will take us hours maybe; Yet if it does not seem a moment’s thought, Our stitching and unstitching has been naught. Better go down upon your marrow-bones And scrub a kitchen pavement, or break stones Like an old pauper, in all kinds of weather; For to articulate sweet sounds together Is to work harder than all these, and yet Be thought an idler by the noisy set Of bankers, schoolmasters, and clergymen The martyrs call the world.’ And thereupon That beautiful mild woman for whose sake There’s many a one shall find out all heartache On finding that her voice is sweet and low Replied, ‘To be born woman is to know— Although they do not talk of it at school— That we must labour to be beautiful.’ I said, ‘It’s certain there is no fine thing Since Adam’s fall but needs much labouring.

There have been lovers who thought love should be So much compounded of high courtesy That they would sigh and quote with learned looks Precedents out of beautiful old books; Yet now it seems an idle trade enough.’ We sat grown quiet at the name of love; We saw the last embers of daylight die, And in the trembling blue-green of the sky A moon, worn as if it had been a shell Washed by time’s waters as they rose and fell About the stars and broke in days and years. I had a thought for no one’s but your ears: That you were beautiful, and that I strove To love you in the old high way of love; That it had all seemed happy, and yet we’d grown As weary-hearted as that hollow moon.

JIGSAW TALLAGHT We met with Jigsaw Tallaght on Monday August 10th and here is what they had to say about their service. “Jigsaw Tallaght is a youth mental health service that works with to 12-25 year olds who are living, or studying in the Tallaght and surrounding areas. We offer support to young people who are facing anything from everyday worries and stresses, up to more challenging issues like panic or low mood. “It’s often said that big problems are sometimes small problems which we ignored for too long, so at Jigsaw we believe that there’s no problem too small, and the sooner we can face something with support, the more manageable it can be.

It’s often said that big problems are sometimes small problems which we ignored for too long, so at Jigsaw we believe that there’s no problem too small, and the sooner we can face something with support, the more manageable it can be “At Jigsaw we see mental health as being like your physical or dental health. We believe that we all need to take care of it daily to keep well, and in order to do that we need to build up good coping skills and healthy habits. That’s why a lot of the work we do here focuses on setting goals and putting things into practice between sessions. “Generally we will meet with a young person for up to six sessions, during which time we work with them to set (and achieve) goals that are important to them, and will hopefully help them with the problems that they are facing. “We’re a free and confidential service, and we aim to make attending here as easy as possible for young people. You can get in touch with us yourself, and we do our best to offer an appointment to meet with a support worker as quickly as possible.” Contact us on (01)464 9350, or log on to headstrong.ie/jigsaw for more information on your local Jigsaw.

New Ryanair Routes To Dublin To Boost Tourism by genna patterson ____________________________ Google reveals new logo for mobile world by edward lam ____________________________ Google introduced a new logo on September 1st. Just a month after unveiling a major restructuring of the company, Google is updating its image, too. The new Google logo is still a wordmark, but it’s now using a sansserif typeface, making it look a lot more modern and playful. The colors are also softer than they used to be. The logo bears a bit more resemblance to the logo of Google’s new parent company, Alphabet, as well. Alphabet’s wordmark has a similarly unadorned look, and this update makes the two companies’ design language fall more inline.

Tourism Ireland has welcomed Ryanair’s announcement of a new route from Amsterdam, commencing on October 27th. Ryanair are also implementing extra flights on routes from other important tourism markets like Germany (Berlin), Spain (Barcelona and Madrid), Italy (Treviso), Belgium (Brussels) and Britain (London Gatwick, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and East Midlands. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “The introduction of the new Ryanair service from Amsterdam to Dublin, as well as extra flights on routes from cities is fantastic news; they will certainly expand travel options for European and British holidaymakers who wish to visit Ireland in 2016.” Gibbons said that Tourism Ireland have seen very welcome growth of almost +13% in visitors from Mainland Europe and +10% from Britain for the first seven months of 2015.

Dublin will meet Kerry in a Sam Maguire showdown on September 20th as they battle it out for All Ireland glory in Croke Park after needing two bites of the cherry to defeat Mayo in the semi-finals. Three goals in the final fifteen minutes at HQ saw Dublin fight back in a brilliant fashion against Mayo in their semi-final replay on Saturday September 7th when the 2013 Champions were trailing by four points with 55 minutes on the clock. It was telling of the quality, doggedness and sheer class of the Dubs that they fought on to power past a gutsy Mayo who once again found themselves with All Ireland heartache as they were sent home by the Boys in Blue. Cue Croke Park and an old foe in waiting as Dublin prepare to face off against old rivals Kerry who were successful at the semi-final stage against Tyrone.

Dublin and Kerry have not met in an All-Ireland Final since 2011 when Dublin came out winners 1-12 to 1-11 and in doing so recorded their first AllIreland Championship win since 1995. This year’s clash will be the 13th decider between the two and to date Kerry have won eight of the previous clashes with Dublin triumphant on the four other occasions. The most recent Championship meeting between the pair was in 2013 when Dublin overcame Kerry 3-18 to 3-11 at the Semi-Final stage. The Dubs will be looking to get back to winning ways having watched Kerry lift the Sam Maguire for the 37th time last year having previously won the title themselves in 2013. Come Sunday September 20th all the talking and all the history will take a backseat as the two best football teams in the country go head to head once again to see who deserves to be crowned All Ireland Senior Football Championship Champions 2015. The Dublin Ladies Football team will also be heading to Croke Park for an All-Ireland Final this year as they face off against Cork on September 27th. The Sky Blues will be on a mission for revenge against the Rebelettes who defeated them in last year’s final to lift the Brendan Martin Cup.

Boden Joy at Triple Crown Comes Cup Success To Tallaght by JACK MADDEN by JACK MADDEN ____________________________ ____________________________ Ballyboden St Enda’s are Joy Cup Champions following a brilliant second half resurgence against Man ‘O War in Sancta Maria on Saturday August 29th. A strong showing from the North Dublin visitors had seen them enter the break two points ahead of their hosts as Man ‘O War full forward John Fleming ran riot in the first half, bagging himself 1-4 in the process. The second half started much the same as the first ended with Fleming adding a further two points to his tally before Boden, finally awakened from their slumber, began to fight back through brilliant substitute Darragh Kilduff and James O’Hara, who after swapping points worked an opening for full forward Adam Carney to fire home from close range to give the Firhouse Road side a hard-earned lead. Man O’ War failed to respond to the Boden onslaught and Colm Dunne added his name to the score sheet as the hosts went on to chalk up 1-7 without reply and came out deserved champions despite the brilliant 1-6 scored by Fleming in the process.

Tallaght Leisureplex played host to the Junior Triple Crown 2015 Tenpin Bowling event on the last weekend of August and featured teams from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. The Irish hosts named a strong panel of 20 alongside England and Scotland while the Welsh had a panel numbering 16 as the brilliant bowlers battled it out for titles at under 19 and under 16. There were some stellar performances from our local talent as Tallaght’s Chloe Colton took bronze in the Under 16 Girls Singles competition while fellow Tallaght native Roslyn Moore took silver in the Under 19 Girls Singles. England was overall winner in both divisions and will head to the same tournament in Wales 2016 as heavy favourites following this year’s event. The next event for the Irish juniors will be the Junior Irish Open in Stillorgan on November 6-8.

European Gold for Nate the Great by jack madden ____________________________ Tallaght’s very own Nate “The Great” Kelly has returned home from the Wako Cadets and Junior European Kickboxing Championships in San Sebastian, Spain as a gold medalwinning champion. Nate’s first bout took place as he battled it out on his birthday, August 26th, against a much larger British opponent in the quarter finals, but his maturity showed as alongside great advice from coaches Dave and Dylan Heffernan and Martin Bannon he won his match 7-1. In the semis he faced off against an in form Hungarian opponent from one of the top three sides in the world but an excellent performance saw “The Great” into a final against a Bulgarian bruiser who had made light work of his opponents on route to the final. Nate fought a very clever match using all his guile and experience and following two rounds of brilliant fighting saw his hand raised as Champion of the Younger Cadet 28kg division to chants of “Olé Olé Olé” from the Irish fans before falling to his knees,

overcome with joy at taking home gold for the Irish. Nate’s Tallaght Martial Arts teammates Nicole Bannon (Silver 60kg Point Fighting), Adam Conlon (Older Cadets 46kg Silver light contact and Bronze points fighting), Kate Cassidy (Older Cadet 50kg silver) and Conor McGlinchy (Older Cadets 63kg Silver) all contributed towards seven medals at the event which saw Ireland finish an impressive second on the overall leader board behind the rampant Russian team.

A pre-match lunch was held and bucket collections throughout the day were manned by the students and friends of St Mary’s College and Terenure College from the class of 2012 who also sold raffle tickets for the subsequent draw. In the opening game, a Leinster Senior League Cup game, Terenure ran out narrow 23-17 winners over their hosts before St Mary’s bounced back in the following J1 affair with a 29-19 point victory. Both clubs came together brilliantly to support the cause under the banner “Two Clubs, One Community united in support” and the day was a fitting success.

Rugby World Cup Preview by jack madden

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTJACK

With the Rugby World Cup looming and confidence building among Irish rugby supporters all eyes turn towards Cardiff and the Millennium Stadium where Ireland kick off their campaign against Canada on September 19th. It’s easy to forget that only a couple of years ago Ireland were in disaster mode having finished fifth in the 2013 Six Nations and with Declan Kidney departing and Brian O’Driscoll facing into his final season as an Irish rugby player, things were not looking good for Irish rugby. Fast forward two years and a Joe Schmidt-inspired Irish team are facing into the World Cup as back to back Six Nations Champions, third ranked team in the World and very much dark horses going into the tournament. Surely, this time around, Ireland can better their best ever showing at a Rugby World Cup and battle their way past the Quarter Finals and maybe, just maybe, start to dream of taking the Webb Ellis Cup across the water on October 31st 2015 when the greatest trophy in the rugby world will be up for grabs in Twickenham. Joe’s Army have begun their preparations with wins over Wales and Scotland and losses against the former and England in their warm up campaign but there will be no panic from the ever-ready Schmidt who will be targeting a massive and potentially pool-deciding clash against France in Cardiff on October 11th for his side to start firing on all cylinders. Group D is made up of an increasingly hard to predict French outfit under coach Philippe Saint André, a passionate Italian side

captained by the maestro Sergio Parisse and Canadian and Romanian outfits who respectively ranked 17th and 18th in the world will offer no more than a work out for an Ireland side who if they beat France will most likely be looking at a Quarter Final meeting with Argentina and beyond.

GROUP D PREVIEW Ireland Coach: Joe Schmidt Captain: Paul O’Connell Best RWC Finish: Quarter Final (1987, 91, 95, 2003, 2011) Star Man: Jonathan Sexton: Ireland will look to Leinster and Lions man Sexton to control the game from out half and exercise his brilliant kicking game and majestic passing to get his side on the front foot. With Conor Murray providing him the ball from scrum half Ireland boast the best 9-10 axis in the Northern Hemisphere.

France Coach: Phillipe Saint-Andre Captain: Thierry Dusautoir Best RWC Finish: Second (1987, 1999, 2011) Star Man: Yoann Huget: The Toulouse winger has been France’s stand out man over the past few turbulent seasons. Capable of creating a chance from nothing and strong under the high ball he will be one to watch for Les Bleus as they look to continue impressive form at World Cup tournaments.

Italy Coach: Jacques Brunel Captain: Sergio Parisse Best RWC Finish: First round, two wins (2003, 07, and 2011) Star Man: Sergio Parisse: Arguably the greatest Italian rugby player of all time the mercurial Parisse has been one of the standout number 8s in world rugby for the past decade. The man can do it all and relishes the tough stuff as well as passing and kicking with skills most backs would be proud of.

Canada Coach: Kieran Crowley Captain: Tyler Ardron Best RWC Finish: Quarter Final (1991) Star Man: Jamie Cudmore: The Clermont Auvergne hard man is no stranger to the sin bin, with a fiery temper and swashbuckling style of play that makes him stand out among any team and will have his opponents keeping an eye over their shoulder whenever he is on the field.

Romania Coach: Lynn Howells Captain: Mihai Macovei Best RWC Finish: First Round, one win (1987, 91, 99, 2003 and 2007) Star Man: Ovidiu Tonita: Set to play in his fourth Rugby World Cup after winning an international recall, Tonita played at the 2003, 2007 and 2011 tournaments and was also a nonplaying squad member for the Oaks’ RWC 1999 campaign.

IRELAND FIXTURES POOL D Saturday September 19th 14:30: Ireland vs Canada Millennium Stadium, Cardiff Sunday September 27th 16:45: Ireland vs Romania Wembley Stadium, London Sunday October 4th 16:45: Ireland vs Italy Olympic Stadium, London Sunday October 11th 16:45: France vs Ireland Millennium Stadium, Cardiff Quarter Finals: Saturday October 17th and Sunday October 18th Semi Finals: Saturday October 24th and Sunday October 25th Final: Saturday October 31st 2015, Twickenham Stadium, London

INROVERS

AUTUMN IS THE CRUELEST SEASON by padraig conlon

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

The arrival of autumn also heralded the end of Rovers’ slim title hopes as two points from a possible nine means European qualification is all that’s left to play for. Following the excellent 3-0 home win over Cork City on August 17th, it seemed The Hoops were finding some momentum at just the right time. Even though most fans knew the chances of overtaking Dundalk were highly unlikely, there was a feeling that if Rovers could get themselves to within a few points of the Louth men for the final few games then at least put them under pressure. Prior to the big showdown in Oriel was the trip to the Showgrounds to take on a resurgent Sligo side who had won their previous two league games under new manager Mickey Adams. Dundalk had dropped two points the night before and here was a chance for The Hoops to put a little more pressure on before the two sides met on the following Tuesday. Pat Fenlon was able to give Damien Duff his first start but it was Sligo’s Estonian international Sander Puri who grabbed all the attention when he gave the home side the lead in the first half.

90 // #intallaght / TWEET US

Gary McCabe levelled matters in the second half with a fine free kick but The Hoops were left kicking their heels at the end as a point was of little benefit to them in their pursuit of the league leaders. Then came the much anticipated trip to Dundalk. Could Rovers kick start an unbelievable come-back in the race for the title? On the night Dundalk showed why they are champions as they produced a classy display to run out 2-0 winners with the goals coming from ex Hoops Ronan Finn and Sean Gannon. The third game of what was turning into a rough week was the home derby and a chance to inflict a first Tallaght defeat in three years on Bohs. Stephen McPhail came back into the team for his first start since June and The Hoops began brightly with Gareth McCaffrey coming close after 20 minutes. Against the run of play the visitors took the lead in bizarre circumstances and it seemed like even the gods were conspiring to scuttle Rovers’ European hopes. Thankfully, mercifully and deservedly The Hoops drew level early in the second half as Gareth McCaffrey got onto a stray pass from Mulcahy to fire a left shot into the back of the Bohs net for his very first Rovers goal. A few more chances were spurned by the home side as The Hoops recorded their ninth draw of the season, their fourth at home. The target now for Rovers is to try and catch Cork for second place and start building for next season.

Back in the day… by padraig conlon

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

September 1985 Rovers travel to Budapest to play Honved in the European Cup First Rd 1st Leg. Thirty years ago Europe was a very different place when Rovers ventured behind the Iron Curtain to take on the Hungarian Champions. Honved were an impressive side at the time, six of their team would go on to represent Hungary in the Mexico World Cup the following summer and they had beaten Ajax and Inter Milan the previous season. Jim McLaughlin had prepared The Hoops well for this clash, they had recently toured Spain and Portugal, putting in some good performances which gave them much needed confidence going into the tie. The first leg would be McLaughlin’s 21st European match and in the build up he spoke to The Irish Press about how it had also been one of his most challenging. “Never before have I put a team on the field that has been hit so hard by injury or suspensions,” he said. “But nine of the 11 players out there have been through European football before so there can be no excuses, I have every confidence that we won’t let our country down.” The journey to Hungary had included an eight hour stop at Zurich en route and Rovers travelled without Mick Byrne, Mick Neville and Pat Byrne. Dermot Keely, who was still nursing a broken rib sustained in a pre-season friendly just four weeks before, made the trip and had no plans on missing out on the action. “The worst that can happen is that the ribs will break again,” Keely told an Irish reporter who enquired whether it was wise to play!

Some of the Rovers fans travelled all the way from Dublin to Budapest by bus with Harry “The Driver” Cooney. Speaking to the Irish Independent before the first leg, supporters club member Liam Christie told of their plans to get to the game on time! “We already have 10 confirmed travellers at £185 a head,” he said. “Thirty is the ideal number. Harry plans to take 20 seats out of the back of the bus to give us more luggage and bar space. We’ll take the car ferry to Holyhead on Saturday, September 14th. We plan to do 500 miles a day and arrive in Budapest on the morning of the match. We’re due back in Dublin sometime the following weekend. We always go to our away matches by bus. Anyway, it’s a great chance to see a bit of Europe.” The match was played on Wednesday September 18th in the Vaas Stadium in Budapest and Rovers put in a battling performance before eventually going down 2-0. According to all reports The Hoops gave a good account of themselves and should have had a goal ten minutes from the end when Fran Hitchcock missed when it seemed easier to score. Dermot Keely’s two broken ribs didn’t hold him back and all the papers reported on how well he played in spite of his painful injury. After the game gaffer McLaughlin was glowing in his praise for the hosts and proud of the effort his Hoops had put in. “Honved were by far the best team I have come up against as a manager in Europe. I thought the performance of the Rovers players was of the highest calibre. It will be a mountain to climb for that second game but at least we can see the mountain,” he said. The second leg in Milltown two weeks later saw the Hungarians run out 3-1 winners to go through 5-1 on aggregate before they were beaten in the next round by eventual champions Steaua Bucharest.
