A NOTE FROM
THE EDITOR Welcome to the October issue of InTallaght !
Well despite it being October, we’ve had some odd bursts of summer sunshine, but we’re not fooled at all! We know that just around the corner a chill is coming, so we’ve gone-a-hunting for a winter coat and have all the best style of The Square Shopping Centre in our fashion spread this month! Add to that we have the perfect boots for the frosty weather and you’ll be all set for winter fashion. Something that warms our hearts beside winter coats is the new album by Cavan band The Strypes. Our journalist Padraig was lucky enough to be welcomed in for a chat with the lads who told him all about their journey since being signed by Elton John’s management company, and why they prefer to live in Cavan than London (it’s the hipsters, apparently). Next up our journalist Rachel decided to get to the bones of the One Direction story and looks at how a few young lads applying for X Factor can turn into the biggest boy band going. Whether Zayn leaving or the band’s hiatus is a publicity stunt we don’t know, but one thing is for sure, we know their fans won’t want to let them go!

As always we have quite a selection of movie reviews for you all to read, with our favourite being The Martian starring Matt Damon. It’s strange to see him play a character in the same position as he was in Interstellar, but with a different, more optimistic outlook! We also have an interview with Head of Sport at RTÉ, Ryle Nugent, who tells us about their policies on televised sports and how RTÉ are doing all they can to support the League of Ireland, within the constraints they have. Finally we have an array of game and tech articles on Tony Hawks Pro Skater, Assassins Creed Syndicate, the 20th anniversary of PS One and the new Amazon Kindles coming out. Or if you fancy a good story we have our Writer’s Corner and a book review of Cork author Louise O’Neill’s new book Asking For It. If you want to get in touch, please email editor@intallaght.ie Happy reading,

Local Author Louise Phillips launches new book by genna patterson ____________________________ Luas 11 year anniversary of red line by genna patterson ________________________ Eleven years ago today on September 28th, 2004, the red line of the Luas was officially opened by An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. The new light rail system from Tallaght to Dublin City Centre was a welcome addition to local bus links to the city and still remains an important development in the area. The red line opened one month later than planned with 23 stops from Tallaght to O’Connell Street. Together the red and green line Luas cost €775 million to build and there was initially criticism that they don’t link up, however works are currently in place to amend that with it scheduled to be in operation by the end of 2017.

The launch of The Game Changer by local writer, Louise Phillips was a jampacked affair, with readers spilling out onto the street in the Gutter Bookshop in Temple Bar last month. Irish author Eoin McNamee, who launched the novel, praised Louise, whom he described as being at the forefront of a new wave of Irish crime writers. Unsurprisingly, The Game Changer hit the Irish Best Sellers list on the first week, and within a couple of days of release, it went straight to the number one spot at Dublin Airport. Louise, who lives in Bohernabreena, spoke emotionally about her writing journey at the launch, and how it all began eight years ago, when she attended her first creative writing class in Old Bawn in Tallaght. She is the author of four psychological crime thrillers based in Ireland. Her debut novel Red Ribbons was nominated for the Best Irish Crime Novel of the Year 2012, and her second novel, The Dolls House, won the award in 2013. Last Kiss, her third novel was also shortlisted. The Game Changer is out now.

I feel it has saved my life working here ____________________________ because it takes my mind off it and you have to be an actress by RACHEL LYNCh
@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
“I’m 16 years working here in The Square, I’m originally from the inner city, we moved out to Drimnagh then and I grew up there and I’m living in Tallaght now, I’m married 35 years so I’m here in Tallaght 35 years. I was 50 when I first started here on the Customer Service desk and I’m now 66, I absolutely love it here, I do shovel the makeup on in the morning and fix the hair, yes I do like to look well. There is never a dull moment here. Before I came here I worked in a shop, a newsagents and a deli. Before that I had my children and before I was married I was a receptionist at St James Hospital for 17 years with out patients and casualty and I loved that too. I have always worked with the public and I loved hospital. I used to do the theatre and I was directing plays there and I was acting on stage but the voice is always letting me down now and again and I’m always afraid it would happen on stage so I had to give that up due to the treatment. I’m happily married, well I’m happy, I hope he is too! I have two children, a son and a daughter. My daughter went off to Australia and met the love of her life and is getting married next year and I have one little granddaughter called Katie. My son only left home a few months back – he’s living in Tallaght

Village with a lovely girl so everyone is good. When I think of the future I think I would like to stay working for as long as I can, I don’t know how long I will be able to but so far, so good and I’m feeling well. I would love to go visit Australia again, I went for the first time this year and that nearly killed me, but it was worth it. Australia was beautiful; I would to live there, they are geared for the heat so I didn’t mind it but the travel and the long time on the plane, it was just a nightmare but I would do it again because it was worth it. I was there for a whole month and the baby was three months when I went there – it was just gorgeous, my husband loved it there too. In my free time I enjoy painting and I absolutely love the garden, I don’t have as much energy but sure who has at this stage of their lives, but that’s what I love to do. I really love working here in The Square and in the last years especially since my diagnosis. I feel it has saved my life working here because it takes my mind off it and you have to be an actress. Also my husband is my rock and I’m so delighted I still have him, he wants to do everything for me and I help him by letting him. I’m very happy to have that man I have, I really am.”

As Sound As The Strypes Back in Dublin for a gig, InTallaght caught up with The Strypes to talk about their new album, Elton John and why they still live in Cavan. by PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
The Strypes are the latest in a venerated line of outstanding bands that this country has produced.
Hailing from Cavan, the four piece rock band have earned praise and plaudits all over the world. The childhood friends who grew up playing together in their bedrooms have taken their love of music to the next level. Signed to a major record label while still in school they are great ambassadors for their generation. Hard working, self motivated and lacking any obnoxious qualities so prevalent in musicians their age they really are a great example to their peers. I was delighted to get to talk to a group of young lads who deserve every bit of success that comes their way. I walk into the room and am greeted warmly by the lads. They are instantly likeable and their friendliness seems genuine. Lead singer Ross Farrelly is 17, drummer Evan Walsh 18, bassist Pete O’Hanlon 19 and guitarist and chief songwriter Josh is just gone 20.
But enough about their ages. That topic has been discussed a gazillion times and I’m not going there. Yes they’re young lads but they’re not a novelty act, they’re not in this for some quick fame. These lads are the real deal and deserve to be judged like any other band on the quality of their output, not on how long they’ve been on the planet. They’ve just started a tour the night before in Derry and are full of energy. They’re in Dublin for a sold-out show in the Academy later that night. “Derry was rocking, the crowd were incredible, some energy they had!” says guitarist and chief songwriter Josh. They’re delighted to be back in Dublin, a place full of great memories from when they started out. Back then they would sometimes play an under 18’s gig early in the evening followed by an over 18’s one later. “It was fairly mad,” says Peter, “we’d play places like The Mercantile and we’d be stuck in our van for two hours, we’d only be allowed in to sound check ten minutes before the gig would start! When we started
We’ve great memories of playing Dublin and we always love coming back to play here gigging in Dublin it was all fun for us, we just started playing and people got interested. Back then we were just mainly doing covers and hadn’t really started writing yet. It was funny because we had all these old Dublin bands saying, ‘they shouldn’t be onstage with us because we write our own songs!’ We’ve great memories of playing Dublin and we always love coming back to play here.” The rest of 2015 will be taken up by the tour which will take them to the UK, Germany, France, The Netherlands, and Belgium before finishing up in Japan in

the strypes
I think maturity is natural…we’ve had experiences since the last album that we didn’t have before and that gives you new things to write about
November. “This will be our fifth time going to Japan and we’ll be doing a tour there where we literally go from the top of the island right down to the bottom in two weeks,” says drummer Evan. “Apparently that’s not very common for a lot of non-Japanese bands to do so it’ll be a great experience. We’ve gone over a few times just to do short spurts of gigs and they’ve always been really good. The crowds have always been very receptive. Once they get in to something they really get into it in Japan so you get people giving you presents and stuff after the gigs. It’s just how they treat foreign bands, I guess they see it as welcoming you to their country.” This year has already been a very eventful one for the band. In May they played Slane, in June they played Glastonbury and last month saw the release of their second album Little Victories which went straight to No.1 in Ireland. Being busy is just what they want. “We’ve had a great year so far, it’s been non-stop and that’s the way we
18 // #intallaght / TWEET US
like to have it,” says Josh. “Glastonbury was great because it wasn’t something we were expecting, we only got the call a couple of days beforehand when Azealia Banks pulled out. We were on the second biggest stage which was class.” Slane likewise was another dream venue to cross off the list. Lead singer Ross, quiet and shy today but an animal on stage, was totally unfazed by playing to such a big audience. “No I wasn’t nervous before it at all. I’ve been at this a few years so I don’t really get nerves. I had been to Slane to see the Foo Fighters a few years ago. It’s funny because when you’re in the crowd the place looks absolutely massive but when you’re on stage it looks a lot smaller.”
LITTLE VICTORIES
I ask how the response to Little Victories has been so far. There’s the well known cliché in rock music about the “difficult second album,” the theory being that after a successful first album the band has to go on the road and this lifestyle isn’t conducive to creating music. The lads aren’t having any of it. “We’re delighted with the response, it’s been really well received, people really like it. It went to number one here and the Top 20 in the UK which we’re obviously delighted about,” says Josh. “We’ve done a lot of gigs with those songs now. We started doing them just
before Christmas last year so people at the gigs got very used to them. Like in Derry last night we’ve had people going pure mad to songs that they don’t really know so when they do know them it’ll be interesting!” A lot of music industry people have noted a maturity in their new work, something Josh thinks is just inevitable really. “I think maturity is natural, we’re at an age now where we’d all be in college plus we’ve had experiences since the last album that we didn’t have before and that gives you new things to write about,” he say. “We’ve played so much more together and this really helps a band get even better musically, helps them get tighter.” Since their first gig at Farnham National School in Cavan in 2008 their rise has been nothing short of meteoric. Their first EP, Young, Gifted and Blue, was released on iTunes in April 2012 and went straight to number one in the blues charts. It stayed there for six weeks. “We were just gigging around Cavan and around Ireland
at the time and we didn’t set out to become famous, we just loved playing music,” says Josh. “The problem with a lot of kids nowadays is they are more interested in the fame than they actually are in music. We’re not like that, to us it’s all about the music.” From the outset they wanted to be different, something drummer Evan believes sets them apart from other young bands. “When they start out, most bands play the same set list, it’s all that usual pub band set list,” he says. “We were aware of that from a young enough age, that we wanted to be different and have an unusual angle on it. We were just interested in, and influenced by, a mix of rhythm and blues, old stuff like Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley and a lot of 70’s punk and new wave bands like Dr. Feelgood and The Hat.” By the end of 2012 they were signed up to Elton John’s management company Rocket Music and got an album deal from Universal. Elton John has spoken publicly numerous times of his admiration for the band. How
do they get on with their boss? “Well he’s not really our boss,” says Josh. “He owns the company which looks after our management, on the few times we’ve met him he’s been really sound and really good to us. He’s a really lovely man.” Introducing them to the world prior to the release of their first album Snapshot two years ago, Mike Smith, a senior executive at Universal, made the bold statement that The Strypes would be the biggest band in the world one day. No pressure then! But did the lads feel the weight of that expectation? “Not really no, because even if the album didn’t sell we would still continue to play gigs and make music,” says bassist Pete. “The label are the ones who are more worried about whether a band is commercially successful or not.” Snapshot was a great success, well received and commercially successful, everyone was happy with the outcome. To top it off the band got to work with legendary producer Chris Thomas, who worked on The Sex Pistols’ Never Mind The Bollocks and The Beatles’
Well Elton’s not really our boss… but he’s been really sound and really good to us. He’s a really lovely man. White Album. Along the way the lads have picked up some very famous fans; Noel Gallagher, Dave Grohl and Johnny Marr have all praised them and the Modfather himself Paul Weller was so impressed he invited them to perform with him! “The people we’ve met at the very top of the music industry have been really nice, really sound.” say Josh. “The maddest was probably Jimmy

the strypes Page,” says Pete. “We came off a gig in Brazil and Paul Weller was telling us that Jimmy Page had been raving about us! That’s pretty crazy to be honest but obviously very flattering that people of their calibre are liking what we do.”
DOCUMENTARY DRAMA
Last March, they featured in a BBC documentary titled The Strypes: Best Thing Since Cavan, which was produced by legend filmmaker Julian Temple. The programme documented their rise to international stardom. “When we heard Julian Temple wanted to make it we were very impressed. He did amazing documentaries about The Clash and the Pistols so we didn’t give it a second thought,” says Josh. “We gave him all this footage and he came along and did some filming bits and then pieced it all together.” I ask them do they all still get on as well together because the documentary showed them having a few disagreements and it appeared Josh wasn’t happy with the artistic direction of the band. “Yeah we still get on great,” says Josh. “To be honest we know what Julian was trying to do by including that footage. He has to make something with a bit of sensationalism in it, we totally get that. We’re a band of four young lads and of course there’s going to be clashes every now and then but what you see is a little bit exaggerated. We wanted to make something that is

real, not something fake where we’re all going around happy out all the time.” The lads are very, very friendly and completely free of any ego. To be honest they are a pleasure to talk to and I could listen to them all day. They all still live in Cavan, something they say helps keep them grounded. They all laugh when I ask how would they be received if they were swanning around the Breffni county like big time Charlies! “You wouldn’t last too long,” says Pete, “That sort of carry on wouldn’t be tolerated you know!” They say the support they get from their fellow Cavan people means an awful lot to them and they really appreciate it. “There wouldn’t be a big tradition of Rock ’n’ Roll in Cavan so people are proud of the band in the same way that they would be if the GAA team is going well. There’s that feeling of “fair play to them.” Elton John has told them they would be better off relocating to London but this is not something any of the band is keen on. “I was kind of interested in moving to London,” says Josh, “and then I went to Shoreditch and it’s the most hipster place ever. Fake people and big beards, nothing original about it at all. I think that sort of scene is horrible. Don’t get me wrong, I love London, I love going there to visit but I don’t understand how anyone would want to live like that. People at home in Cavan are more original and real than the hipsters in Shoreditch!”
When I ask them what the highlight of their career has been so far they all agree as one. “We played a gig in Canvey Island (on the River Thames) last year and two of the lads from Dr Feelgood joined us on stage, guitarist Wilko Johnson and bassist John B. Sparks,” says Pete. “That was a special moment for all of us.” We finish up by talking about something that is all over the news at the moment, the slow death of rural Ireland and the lack of opportunities for young people. I apologise in advance if the subject matter is getting too heavy but they’re having none of it. “No of course that’s something we’d be interesting in discussing,” says Josh. “I live in the centre of Cavan town and you can’t but notice the amount of people sleeping rough, it’s so sad. The recession has left it’s mark there, no doubt about it. So many young people have had to go because there’s nothing here for them. I think the government could do more for the young people, they have definitely been let down a bit. Rural Ireland is struggling and something needs to be done.” And a last bit of advice for any young bands struggling to make it? “You have to work at it,” says Evan. “Just keep gigging and practicing, that’s the only way to give yourself a chance. We’re proof of that. If we can make it anyone can but you have to be willing to work hard.”

One For All?
With One Direction going on hiatus next year, could the Dublin 3Arena be their final Irish farewell? by RACHEL LYNCh @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
It’s been a tough couple of months for One Direction fans throughout the world.
At the beginning of the year we saw Zayne announce that he was leaving the band and then just two months ago their management confirmed that in fact the whole band would be embarking on a hiatus in 2016. It remains to be seen exactly what the future holds for the world’s most successful boy band, we at InTallaght took a look over the last few years of their success in advance of them hitting the 3Arena in Dublin this month for two massive final dates. Tickets sold out in record time and for those lucky enough to snap up tickets you look set to witness the band as a foursome for the very last time (well for the next year or so). We looked at just how far along the band have come, from shy young 14 and 17 year olds who auditioned on the X Factor, to selling out Croke Park in a matter of minutes a few years later. They have travelled the world touring and have many celebrity fans but just where did it all start?
THE BEGINNING
It was only back in 2010 that One Direction first appeared on our screens
22 // #intallaght / TWEET US
where it all began: on x factor
while auditioning for Simon Cowell’s X Factor. I’m sure by now everyone knows the background of their formation. They all auditioned as individuals from all different parts of the UK and Ireland. With the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga dominating the musical charts at the time, Cowell clearly saw the financial potential of a boyband. Westlife had disappeared and the likes of Take That were just too old for the teenage girls of this time. The 2010 auditions were overshadowed by five young men who auditioned separately and were eventually manufactured into a group before our very eyes. That year Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson became One Direction, and a pop sensation was born. Our own Mullingar native Niall Horan auditioned and was actually quite lucky to make it through to the next round, as Simon Cowell wasn’t
impressed with his vocals stating, “I think you are unprepared, I think you came with the wrong song, you’re not as good as you thought you were, but I still like you.” However when it came to the vote it was a yes from Simon, Louis and surprisingly even Katy Perry. As the five lads headed to boot camp they didn’t impress to the standard expected and were all told they would be going no further as individuals, but in typical X Factor style there was to be a dramatic twist and the five were called in front of Simon and Nicole Scherzinger. They were the newly formed fivesome One Direction. Although already gathering screaming fans throughout the stages of the show the boys didn’t win but instead came third after Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson. Cowell didn’t seem too bothered that the boys didn’t secure the winning number of votes though as he had other plans for them. Reportedly after the series he signed
them up on a deal worth around £2 million. Looking back now that really was the deal of the century. I think for most the reason the band were so likeable was down to the fact that they all seemed like a pretty grounded bunch of lads, and with our very own representation in the band, Niall Horan, the Irish had yet another reason to fall in love with them.
STEP BY STEP
Throughout 2011 the boys were rarely seen out of the studio and were beginning to adjust to their new lifestyle. The once ordinary boys had now gone from student life to being the most popular teenagers both here in Ireland and the entire UK and this was before they had even released a single. Their first single What Makes You Beautiful was to be a marker of what was to come from the group. It reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, after it had become the most preordered Sony Music Entertainment single in history. The singles continued to come and One Direction were rarely not seen in the Top 10. They had hit the jackpot and almost overnight had became a worldwide household name. Their first studio album, Up All Night, was released globally in early 2012. It became the UK’s fastest-selling debut album of 2011, and more impressively topped the charts in sixteen countries. While they continued to gather success they also became one of the biggest brands with their images attached to almost anything that could take it – they became a phenomenon that no one but Justin Bieber could compete with. Like any boy band the more exposure they were given the more

women they were linked with. Zayn had been off the market since meeting Perrie Edwards of Little Mix during her time on the X Factor, while Harry was linked with a whole list of women, from Taylor Swift to Cara Delevingne to Kendall Jenner. Niall has kept quite a low profile over the years being linked with virtually nobody, although there were rumors of a blossoming friendship with MTV’s Irish presenter Laura Whitmore but that story gathered no moss. Their clean-cut image soon saw them become the face of many well known brands throughout the world and the money just kept coming. Last year, the Sunday Times Rich List calculated their combined wealth to be over £70 million. Over time the media seemed hellbent on printing as many scandalous
stories as they possibly could, but it didn’t take long for some of the headlines to ring true. Many outlets had reported that Zayn was fed up with the spotlight and wanted out of the band, so it was no surprise to see in March of this year that the band released a statement announcing Zayn’s departure, much to the distress of the band’s fans. He had dominated the media in the weeks running up to this news as he had even flown home from the boy’s world tour early amid rumours that he had cheated on his fiancée Perrie. The news was the front cover of newspapers all over the world. Fans were utterly devastated with some schools having to offer a counseling service for those so badly affected by the news. Diehard fans still found it hard to accept taking to their social

ONE DIRECTION media accounts to declare their love for Zayn and this saw a trend of some unfortunately openly mocked online videos of grief-stricken teenagers and children the world over. In his official statement he praised the band and wished them well; “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-yearold who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.” The band vowed to carry on as a four piece and they returned in July with their new single Drag Me Down. It was the first single from their fifth studio album, and the first material released by the group after Zayn’s departure. As you can see from his statement above all Zayn wanted to do was be a “normal 22 year old”. His romance with Perrie seemed to be at an all time

high and life was good. Although it didn’t take long for things to drastically change. Rumors surfaced that Zayn had called time on his long term relationship with Perrie by text message and he then was said to be working on some of his own material, quite the opposite path he had spoken about weeks before. As if that news wasn’t enough Louis told the world he was set to become a father. The loss of Zayn was one thing but news of a baby was unwelcome news to many of their fans. What seemed to shock fans more was that Louis had just split with long-term girlfriend Eleanor Calder in the spring. So who was the mammy-to-be? She is Briana Jungwirth who had been photographed partying with the 1D star a few times. The boy band were slowly losing the innocence that helped them rake in so much money in their teens. Babies? girlfriends and booze parties weren’t exactly the best image for teenage girls.
FOND FAREWELL?
Louis Walsh who is a familiar face in the boy band industry and who has worked with the likes of Westlife and Boyzone spoke to Life Magazine back in 2005 about how he viewed the demise of Boyzone. He said “Once Keith’s girlfriend Lisa was pregnant, I knew that was the end of it. In a boyband, the fans do not want to see them with girls. The fans want to think they’re available and I believe in that whole thing of bringing in the girlfriend through the back door of the hotel and all that.
Because you’re selling a myth and you’re selling it to girls”. The heartache wasn’t to end for the fans and Louis’ words seemed pretty appropriate in regard to the likes of One Direction. Just as many of the fans began to adjust to the band as a four piece they were hit with another massive bombshell – the group announced that they will temporarily go on hiatus in March 2016 to pursue solo careers for at least a year. Liam who features on this month’s edition of Attitude Magazine gave fans some hope as he explains that this will not be the end and tells of his hunger for moving on. “I realise now this is the time to start branching out and exploring. This won’t last forever, and there will be a point when we will break off and do our own things, but we will work together again.” Ok so they aren’t technically “splitting up” which will give some comfort to their diehard fans but who’s to say they will ever return as One Direction? Many believe this is just another way for Cowell to make money. Band takes a break for a year, they all release their own material then *bang* we have a reunion world tour. The band are set to light up Dublin for two nights this October and with tickets sold out completely, it’s set to be a great night in the capital. When they will be back again is not yet known but one thing is certain Simon Cowell isn’t one for letting a good thing go, so I’m sure this won’t be the last we see of the group!

In this our fifth and final edition of celebrating twenty-five years of The Square we look at some of the changes and stories from Tallaght and Ireland from 2010 to present day and beyond.
March 2010 saw the loss of the UCI Cinema in The Square and it was a long two years until IMC opened its doors in The Square. On Thursday September 15th Shamrock Rovers hosted Rubin Kazan in the Europa League group stages becoming the first Irish football team to reach the group stages of a major international competition. Although Rovers lost all six games in the competition the lasting memory will be of Stephen Rice’s goal in the 50th minute at White Hart Lane to give the Tallaght team a one goal lead, before succumbing to a 3-1 loss. Those who were at the reverse fixture in Tallaght would have seen an 18-yearold Harry Kane, who is currently

lighting up the Premier League, score his first goal for Tottenham Hotspur. On March 6th, 2011 the very first edition of InTallaght was made available and Directors Edward Lam and Riyadh Abdelkader and Designer Gwen Taylour are still with the magazine to this day. InTallaght prints 8,000 copies for every edition, with 10,000 people on average viewing each issue online. Edition 32 was the most popular to date with a record number of 510,000 reading that edition of the magazine. August of 2013 saw Marks and Spencer close in the Tallaght Cross area, and then followed the closure of the Captain America’s in January of the same year. However the area is undergoing somewhat of a rejuvenation with the reopening of the Glashaus hotel, hopefully the first of many. On December 11th of the same year all of Ireland sat down to tune into TV3 and watch the reality television series Tallafornia. The programme became very popular but also garnered its fair share of criticism before the programme came to an end in March 2013. July 19th 2014 saw Paddy Holohan make his UFC debut in Dublin’s 02 Arena, a fight he won via submission victory.
2012-2013 saw some more additions to The Square; H&M arrived as did Carraig Donn, Diesel and Dealz. 2015 saw the opening of Nandos in the Square, the hugely popular casual dining restaurant. The Square hopes to add a host of other stores as well to the already popular shopping centre with the planned expansion in size by half, announced in March 2014 by South Dublin County Council.

With The Square celebrating 25 years this October, a new book Circle & Square sets out to pay homage to the heart of community found in shopping centres.
Circle & Square is a new book released to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Square in Tallaght, edited by local writer Eileen Casey. The book is a collection of prose, poetry and fiction, inspired by ‘shopping centre’ as a place full of dramatic possibility. Eileen chose the title because she says “Circle represents the greater world, whereas Square suggests solidity, community and family.” Most of the contributors to Circle & Square are part of a writers group called Platform One, who meet in the RUA RED Arts centre, across from The Square. The book contains the work of guest contributors together with an imaginative 16-page colour insert of The Square interior, the work of Tallaght Photographic Society. The cover image Girl on a Travelator by Paul Maxwell, won first prize in an award sponsored by Luas Transdev. Cathryn McMenamy, The Commercial Manager at The Square, was also very supportive, together with South Dublin County Council. Eileen had previously worked with a group of writers on a body of work called Under the Pyramid, which was published to celebrate The Square’s fifth year in business in 1995. Circle & Square aims to broaden the work that Under the Pyramid began all those years ago as so many traders have come and gone over the years. Eileen was herself at the opening of The Square on October 23rd, 1990, and one of the very first to cross the threshold that morning with her toddler daughter. She said, “Thinking about that dramatic event still brings an emotional response. After all, I, like
Ship in Full Sail by David Turnbull
many young mothers, did not have the facilities back then which are so taken for granted nowadays (play areas for children, coffee docks, cinema…the list is endless).” Eileen said that it has been a great privilege to edit Circle & Square as the work showcases the high levels of emerging creative talent currently in the county where a “multiplicity of perspectives and experiences were gained.” Her own poem included in the book, Astronomer on the 15th Floor, draws on the premise that “even when far away, there is a universal sense of familiarity to be found in shopping malls which connects us to where we come from.” Circle & Square will be available during The Red Line Book Festival and in particular will be part of a panel discussion during the Red Line Book festival on October 13th in RUA RED. The panel will be chaired by Eileen to explore the role of the ‘shopping centre’ as “either temple to consumerism, imaginative emporium or both.” Guest writers Joan Power and Kevin Power (Bad Day in Blackrock) will be in company with representatives from local trader organisations. Circle & Square will also be launched during Social Inclusion Week in November and will be available in outlets throughout The Square. It sells at €15 and can also be obtained by contacting Eileen Casey, Fiery Arrow Press, eileencaseyhome@eircom.net.

Jackie’s Florist Officially Relaunches Barnardos National Collection Day Comes to The Square Tallaght We had some special guests in The Square on September 18th, with some Barnardos representatives collecting for their national collection day called ‘Buckets for Barnardos’. The collectors were staggered throughout the Centre and received some much-needed support from all of you shopping in the Centre that day. Barnardos ran the event to raise funds to help support the work they do with disadvantaged and impoverished children in Ireland. They also campaign for the rights of all children in Ireland, and provide training and knowledge resources to childcare professionals. If you didn’t get a chance to donate to this worthy cause, you can still do so by texting BUCKET to 50300 to donate €4* to Barnardos. Thanks to all of you who supported!
Level 3 Improvements As part of the Centre’s ongoing improvements we are currently renovating the West Entrance lobby on Level 3 and hope to unveil the new look by the end of this month. More works are planned to enhance this area on the outside with a whole new look and feel for all our customers to enjoy. We will keep you posted as we progress.
We had a wonderful event last month as Jackie’s Florist unveiled the new refurbishment of their store on Level 1 on September 16th. Siobhan Quinn, Fundraiser and Events Co-ordinator from Tallaght Children’s Hospital was on hand to cut the ribbon and officially open the store for business. Owner Jackie Shiels made a speech to mark the wonderful occasion, thanking all her staff – Desmond, Darren, Janice, Tamara and Sarah for all their hard work during the refurbishment. She also thanked The Square management for their help throughout the renovations. She said that she was delighted to have it finished and hopes it will be a great success. “Thanks especially to the people of Tallaght for all their support over the years. We opened during the
recession and have worked very hard to make our florist a success, and hope to continue that success for the next ten years.” If you haven’t visited the new look Jackie’s Florist yet, be sure to drop down and see them and their beautiful array of flowers, gifts and memorial items.
We Welcome Regatta to Tallaght We are delighted to welcome Regatta another new addition to Level 3. Regatta clothing is amongst the most popular in the leisurewear market, with products including jackets, fleeces, trousers and softshells. Their products are good value and are very durable and suitable for harsh conditions. Community Champion This month’s Community Champion is local woman Nicola Moore, one of the founders of VISIT (Voluntary Independent Service in Tallaght). Set up last October, every night VISIT provide meals, sleeping bags, warm clothes and support to Tallaght’s homeless. The group gets no funding and raises it’s own money from donations by individuals, community groups and local businesses. We thought Nicola was more than worthy of the Community Champion award when we heard just how much she does to help. Nicola told us: “VISIT started off last year when we knew there were people sleeping rough in The Priory so we came out one Thursday with food and warm blankets and then came back on the Friday then drove around all day Saturday and discovered there were a number of people sleeping rough in the old Gallagher’s factory on the Greenhills Road.” VISIT are feeding between 15 and 18 people four nights a week and hand out sleeping bags, blankets, gloves and more. VISIT also provide information and support in accessing services. Well done to VISIT and Nicola for all their help to the community. If you would like further information or to help out VISIT, check out their Facebook page or call 085 788 5945. Check out next month’s InTallaght for a feature artilce on VISIT.

Summer is barely just over and although we have been getting the last few bouts of sunshine over the weeks the chill is setting in and it’s now time to think about our winter wardrobe. Everyone has their own personal style from knee-high to ankle boots and of course the must-have warm cosy coat. It depends on your personal style when choosing a coat; do you want to go for a simple elegant coat to go with all your winter wear or do you want something a little more elaborate to really stand out? We here at The Square have a large selection of must-have items that will suit all personalities. First up we have Skechers who have a beautiful range of boots for this coming season which are all perfectly on trend and comfortable.
34 // #THESQTALLAGHT
Next we have Diesel who not only have some really unique coats, but they also have a selection of jeans in all different colours and styles, from skinny to boot cut. Finally DV8 were on hand with that extra little pop of colour for those of you really looking to brighten up your wardrobe as we come into the dark and dull time of the year. It’s important to remember that when piecing together your wardrobe you don’t rush into purchasing odd bits and pieces but instead really sit down and think about what you need. I always feel it’s essential to invest in a good winter coat that will see you right through till spring. Also, remember dressing up your items with colourful scarves and of course the return of the bobble hat (which was virtually everywhere last season) will really add to your wardrobe without setting you back an absolute fortune!

the martian by genna patterson @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
___________________________ This year’s ultimate space movie.
epically entertaining and rather surprisingly, funny considering its premise
The Martian definitely meets the hype that has surrounded its release, with an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Sean Bean, Donald Glover and Kate Mara among others. Based on the book by Andy Weir, The Martian is epically entertaining and rather surprisingly, funny considering its premise. During a mission on Mars, Astronaut and Botanist Mark Watney (Damon) gets left behind on Mars after he is presumed killed during a storm that forces the crew to evacuate. However, he wakes up, impaled and alone on a planet that nothing grows. What follows is the most amazing survival story ever, as Mark must calculate what he needs to survive before the next mission to Mars, four years away. As he progresses, he finds a way to communicate with NASA and the world starts to watch as they try to figure out a way to bring him home. The Martian at times completely astounds you with the many ‘MacGyver-type’ hacks that it takes to keep Mark alive against all odds and with limited resources. While there are many science terms that may confuse and there’s even a ridiculous Michael Bay-type space manoeuvre, you’ll forgive it for both as you enjoy the ride of The Martian. An absolute must-see movie!

A true story that won’t make you want to go rushing to climb Everest any time soon.
Yes Everest is a true story, but it’s not the kind of true story that will see you completely gripped by the final edits. The film is set in 1996 and tells the story of two climbers who are on their way towards the summit of Everest. Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) and Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal) are both leaders of two separate teams who are en route to the top when with little or no warning both teams are hit by a violent storm, and suddenly both teams are on a mission for survival.
As we all know it’s the highest point on earth so conditions are never going to be perfect and both teams are in the centre of one of the biggest blizzards ever known to man. The team endure some freezing temperatures that (spoiler alert) will see some unfortunately not make it. Up against almost impossible odds, can anyone come out of this storm alive? Everest is an intense movie with plenty of ‘don’t look down’ moments, so be warned if you are afraid of heights!

A new fright-aminute thriller from M.Night Shyamalan
mississippi grind by RACHEL LYNCh
___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
A young slick gambler takes someone down on his luck under his wing but can he help him escape his demons?
As soon as I heard Ryan Reynolds was one of the leading cast members in Mississippi Grind I was sold. He plays the character of Curtis, a young man who almost believes his winning streak is unbreakable. Although the story centres around Curtis’ gambling, it is his introduction to Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) that sees the plot really take shape. Gerry is a gambling addict who sees a whole
44 // #intallaght / TWEET US
lot of prosperity in his newfound friendship, he sees Curtis as his good luck charm. Curtis agrees to help Gerry get back on his feet and the pair set off on a road trip to a highstakes poker game in New Orleans. It’s on this trip that Curtis realises just how much trouble Gerry is in. He owes money to, in his own words, “everyone”. From the trailer alone this looks like a film that is based on one man’s gambling addiction and another’s high flying lifestyle, but I was pleasantly surprised at how the story develops and how sometimes the strangest of friendships can help not just one but two escape their troubling lives.

Director M. Night Shyamalan is back on form with an intense thriller that will freak you out royally. With more jumpout-of-your-skin moments than I was comfortable with, this movie had me afraid to turn the lights off hours after the credits rolled. The Visit tells the story of Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and her younger brother Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) who go to visit their estranged grandparents on a Pennsylvania farm. They have never met their grandparents before as their mother (Kathryn Hahn) left home at 19 after a fight with them and refused to have contact with them, until now. She sends them off to visit by train, still reluctant to meet them herself. While their mother is on cruise with her new boyfriend, the kids try to get to know their grandparents, all while Becca films their interaction for a personal documentary (yes this is a handheld shaky cam movie). Unfortunately
Nana (Deanna Dunagan) and Pop Pop (Peter McRobbie) start to act very strangely and soon both kids are unnerved. What starts out as mild dithery moments from the aging grandparents however soon turns into something more frightening altogether. The Visit is definitely a must-see for thriller fans as I nearly jumped out of my skin more than once watching it. If you find scary old ladies (like in Insidious) terrifying, this will scare the life out of you on more than one occasion.

Irrational Man is Woody Allen’s latest movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone.
Captive
by genna patterson
___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
A true story of a woman’s night of terror in the hands of a convict.
Captive is a story based on the true events of a woman, Ashley (Kate Mara) being held captive by an escaped convict. Ashley is a recovering drug addict who is trying to make amends and fix her life. She has moved into a new apartment in the hopes of regaining custody of her young daughter, who was taken off her by child services. Meanwhile Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo) escapes from the Fulton County courthouse in Atlanta and kills three people on his way out.
Brian goes on the run and after listening in on a police radio to know where they are searching, decides to hide out. Brian chooses Ashley’s house to hide out in, and holds her hostage for the night against her will. As Brian watches the man hunt get closer to him on the news, Ashley tries to get him to give himself up. Captive is a horrifying true story, but despite the actors best effort to make you feel the tension, this isn’t exactly a tense movie and I left feeling like it could have been a day time D-list movie.

Phoenix plays a tormented philosophy professor called Abe who moves to Newport to teach and befriends a student Jill (Stone) and fellow lecturer Rita (Parker Posey). Abe is disappointed with life and fairly miserable in his existence, despite having two women chasing him and being totally enamoured by him. That is until he decides to murder a judge in order to help a mother of two. Suddenly his life gains purpose and he starts to live again, having an affair with Rita and Jill in turn. Irrational Man disappointed me as Jill, despite being an intelligent girl, becomes just another flimsy man-obsessed character, which gets to
be extremely tiring after about ten minutes. While Phoenix is the best part of the whole film as both a depressed, then animated professor, the ongoing pretentious dialogue throughout the movie got old fast and seems to be there just to prove how ‘clever’ Woody Allen, writer and director is.

MUSIC
the great man has produced an excellent piece of work that comes close to replicating my favourite Stone’s album Exile on Main Street Keith Richards Crosseyed Heart by padraig conlon
___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
Stories about Keith Richards usually revolve around his superhuman ability to ingest lorryloads of drugs and booze. He is the man who can’t be killed by conventional weapons, an animal goer with the constitution of an elephant who has defied the grim reaper so often he’s quit chasing the 71-year-old Rolling Stone. The legend has grown so big you almost forget he is a musician, and a bloody fine one at that, so Crosseyed Heart, his first solo album in 23 years should remind people how exceptionally talented he really is. On this record he is supported, as he was on his last solo offering in 1992, by backing band the X-Pensive Winos and together they’ve created an album that mixes uptempo blues with Keef ’s signature killer riffs. The album opens with title track Crosseyed Heart, featuring some twangy
48 // #intallaght / TWEET US
Mississippi blues and Keef ’s strained vocals and acoustic guitar. All is going well until two minutes in when he suddenly stops and announces, “That’s all I got.” When heard the first time it slightly put me off listening to the rest of the album to be honest. If he can’t even be arsed finishing the opening track then what is the rest of it going to be like?! Well it turns out my worries were unfounded as the great man has produced an excellent piece of work that comes close to replicating my favourite Stone’s album Exile on Main Street. It’s a loose, rough around the edges, stripped back collection of songs built on Richards’ legendary guitar playing ably assisted by excellent musicians led by drummer, and co-producer, Steve Jordan. Notable mentions also must go to guitarist Waddy Wachtel, keyboardist Ivan Neville, Sarah Dash on backing vocals and the late Bobby Keys who, prior to his death in December 2014, played sax on a number of tracks. One of those tracks featuring Keys is the stand out Amnesia, which tells the story of Richards’ much publicised fall out of a tree in 2006 that led to him losing his memory and being “knocked
on my head” so that “everything went blank, I didn’t even know the Titanic sank.” Robbed Blind has Richards on the trail of someone who’s robbed money off him, “the cops, I can’t involve them, god knows what they might find.” He himself might want to watch his back as Eric Clapton will be gunning for him for robbing the riff off Wonderful Tonight for this track! Another standout for me is Nothing on Me, a song about his ability to survive anything life throws at him. Throughout the album Richards shows why he is one of rock’s greatest guitarists, but also showcases how bad a singer he is! His voice just about passes on the rockier tracks but sounds weak on the ballads. Crosseyed Heart is so good it’ll make you annoyed Keef doesn’t spend more time making solo albums.

the weeknd can’t feel my face by padraig conlon
___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
Canadian musician Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, is one of the hottest things in the charts right now and latest offering Can’t Feel My Face proves he deserves all the hype.
The song starts out deceptively slow before it builds up to a fairly funky chorus as he sings, “I can’t feel my face when I’m with you, But I love it” as he compares the effect a person has on him to being high as a kite. Can’t Feel My Face is the sound of someone trying to describe strong emotions in the only language they understand, that of a recreational drug user. I usually run a mile from RnB as I think it’s one of the
most boring musical genres to ever exist but Can’t Feel My Face is a good tune which made me forget I usually hate this kind of music. Unlike so many other RnB tracks with their soft harmonies and lyrics about “Hangin’ on the phone, All Alone, On My Own”, The Weeknd isn’t afraid to get dark and gloomy. With lines like “And I know she’ll be the death of me, at least we’ll both be numb, And she’ll always get the best of me, the worst is yet to come,” Boyz To Men it ain’t! His voice on this song sounds very like Michael Jackson, though I suppose there are worse people a singer could be compared to, but his songwriting is quite original and creative. He has had a number of hits already Stateside and it’s only a matter of time before Europe also falls for his charms.

Amazon Fire Tablets by colm o’muirí
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
It’s that time of year again that the new FIFA and Pro Evo are hitting the shelves, students are going back to school/college and the latest batch of tablets and phones are hitting the shelves, just in time for Christmas.
Amazon have recently released their latest batch of tablets with the 7, 8 and 10 inch Fire tablets having gone on sale. All three are available from the Amazon site with delivery available to Ireland. Firstly let’s start with the price – the 7 inch tablet is £50 from the Amazon site or €68.94 at the current exchange rate. The 8 inch tablet will cost you £129.99 or €179.24 and the 10 inch Fire tablet will cost you £169.99 or €234.39. Both the 8 and 10 inch tablets are HD screens whereas the 7 inch is unfortunately not. The 10 and 8 inch tablets are virtually identical except in two areas; the size and the amount of storage the two tablets have. The 8 inch is an 8GB tablet whereas the 10 inch has double the storage with a 16GB memory while the 7 inch tablet has 8GB of storage.
50 // #intallaght / TWEET US
The Quad system in the 7 inch is slower than the other two, with a 1.3 GHz Quad-Core processor. The 8 and the 10 inch tablets however, come with a better Quad-Core processor of 1.5GHz. The battery power on all three tablets is quite good with the 7 inch, according to Amazon, giving you up to seven hours of battery for reading, Wi-Fi, watching videos etc. The 8 and the 10 inch tablets come with a slightly better battery too, which according to Amazon should last for up to eight hours to do as you please with the tablet. All three look slim and light enough, which is of great importance to students possibly carrying tablets around all day. The 7 inch is the blockiest of the three while the 8 inch is lighter and sleeker, however the 10 inch one is the largest and thinnest from Amazon yet. Both the rear facing cameras in the 8 and 10 inch tablets are full 1080p HD, which is perfect for capturing the
All three look slim and light enough... great value for money clearest images, whereas the 7 inch tablet comes with a 720p camera. It is in the front facing camera that there is the biggest difference with the 7 inch tablet, featuring a standard resolution VGA camera. The 8 and the 10 inch tablets however, feature a 720p camera for those of you who are fond of a selfie or for Skype calls. All three tablets look to be great value for money but the 7 inch and the 10 inch tablets are only available in black, although the 8 inch tablet is available in a few different colours. The final thing worth mentioning about the tablets is the sound. The Fire HD 8 and 10 inch tablets feature Dolby Audio Mono speakers whereas the 7 inch tablet comes with a standard mono speaker and all three have builtin microphones. Amazon look to have produced three quality tablets that would be perfect with its Amazon Prime package, which will hopefully be available soon in Ireland.

PS One by colm o’muirí
___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
On December 3rd, 1994 one of the greatest video game consoles ever was released in Japan but it wouldn’t be until September 29th, 1995 that the PlayStation One would be released in Europe. This is the console that revolutionised the gaming industry.
Developed and manufactured by Sony, the PlayStation One took over the gaming industry in the mid to late noughties and dominated the home video game console. Although the PS1 was not the first games console to feature discs instead of cartridges, it is accepted that the success of the PlayStation led to the demise of the cartridge-based video games consoles. The PlayStation One brought us some of the most iconic video game characters ever with Crash Bandicoot (the trilogy on the PS1 are fantastic games), Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), PaRappa the Rappa and Spyro The Dragon, to name but a few of the most defining characters from the PlayStation One. Not only have some of the characters been iconic but some of the games are amongst some of the best ever. Abe’s Odyssey is one of the greatest games ever while Alien Trilogy is still
the best game inspired by the films and the fighting game Tekken. Who can forget some of the more wacky games that were available, with one of my own favourites being Hogs of War. To celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the PlayStation, Sony have been doing a range of different things, playing on the nostalgia factor which definitely seems to be working for them. One of the best products that they are releasing is the Wireless Dualshock Controller for the PS4, however it is being released in the PlayStation One colours, and it looks fantastic. They have also released the PS4 in original colours although there are far better PS4 themes available. Sony has long been known to have great marketing and fantastic slogans and catchphrases to promote their products, evident in the 90s with their advertising campaigns for the PlayStation. The one that is etched in the memory of anyone who was lucky enough to own a PS1 was the image of a man holding a PlayStation controller with the X, circle, box and triangle etched into his arms with the slogan ‘Do Not Underestimate The Power Of The PlayStation’. The PlayStation is an iconic games console and toy which will be as fondly remembered by those who owned one the same way that Action Man, Barbie, Beanie Babies
This is the console that revolutionised the gaming industry. and Easy Bake-Ovens are to children from the eras of those toys. PlayStation has continued to get better and better over the years with the PS2, the PS3 and most recently the PlayStation 4. PlayStation has been the most successful games console since its launch, only for a small period when the Xbox 360 was the leading console, and with the recent success of the PS4 let’s hope that PlayStation is around for another 20 years at least.

GAME
Assassins Creed Syndicate by colm o’muirí
___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
Syndicate is the ninth major instalment in the Assassins Creed franchise with the first game in the series only having been released in 2007. The game is set in London during the year 1868, which is also during the Industrial Revolution. For the first time in the franchise you will be able to switch freely between the two main protagonists, twins Jacob and Evie Frye. Evie Frye is also the first female protagonist in the main series who is a playable character. Evie is stealthier than her brother and she relies on those skills as well as her wit and intelligence to succeed. Jacob is more of a brawler who specialises in a brawling style more so than stealth. With a map that is 30% larger than that of Assassins Creed Unity, you will be able to traverse through London using
52 // #intallaght / TWEET US
the parkour style which is a signature of the franchise. There are also some new features to help you get through the map quicker such as a rope launcher to create zip lines. As well as that you can also use the rooftops of moving carriages, or pilot them yourself or even by using the trains system to move through the massive map. Fans of multiplayer modes will be disappointed to know that the game does not feature any multiplayer modes and that Syndicate is strictly a single-player game. There are five different editions of the game to choose from, all with varying prices and they are the standard edition, The Rooks Edition, Gold Edition, Charing Cross Edition and the Big Ben Edition. Most gamers would be better to stick with the standard edition as a lot of the additional content that you receive in these bundles are brutal, such as the recent Batman game Arkham Knight’s additional content which has been woeful. The game is due for release on October 23rd on both the Xbox One and PS4 with the standard edition
priced at €64.99 in Smyths and €69.99 in HMV and Xtravision. For those of you interested in the Rooks edition and the Charing Cross edition they are available in Gamestop for €99.99 and €129.99 respectively with the standard edition retailing at €74.99.
For the first time in the franchise you will be able to switch freely between the two main protagonists, twins Jacob and Evie Frye

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
It is the first Tony Hawk’s game since 2007’s Proving Ground and the first Pro Skater since the fourth instalment that was released in 2002. This is the first Tony Hawk game that has not been developed by Neversoft Entertainment, which became defunct in 2014, however current developers Robomodo have consulted with previous employees of Neversoft to stay as loyal to that gameplay as possible. In the game you can choose to play as 10 pros including the man himself Tony Hawk, as well as Nyjah Huston, Aaron “Jaws” Homoki, Chris Cole, Lizzie Armanto and Riley Hawk to name a few and each rider will also have their own unique skills and tricks. If that doesn’t suit, you can also create and personalise your own skater to your own unique style. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 also gives you the opportunity to create your own skate parks with over 250 obstacles to choose from to create your own unique park. You can then share it with other users and you can also try out their own creations as
well. Additionally you can try out your skills in the 80 missions across eight environments that come with the game. Online gameplay has become a staple of the next-gen consoles and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 looks to be following that tradition. The game allows you to shred along with 20 other players at once, pulling off signature pro skater moves and extended trick combinations that the series is well-known for. The game is set for release on October 2nd on both the PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is available in Smyths Toys Superstore for €64.99, HMV/ Xtravision for €69.99 and Gamestop for €74.99 on the next-gen consoles. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are considerably cheaper with them retailing at €44.99 in Gamestop and €39.99 in HMV and Xtravision.

MOTOR
AUDI A7
by RACHEL LYNCH
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
Everyone has their idea of a dream car. Something they aspire to one day drive and for me that day came this week when I visited Charles Hurst Usedirect here in Kingswood. Unfortunately I didn’t get to keep it, but I did get long enough with the car to reconfirm to myself that yes, it is the car I want. So what was it? It was an 2012 Audi A7; many of you would be sold by the exterior itself but once you sit inside it, it is on another level of comfort than any car I have ever reviewed before. So what really stands out for me? Well although it’s four-door it is designed like a coupé so it will work for a sleek family car or for the single man or woman looking for a bit of luxury. The grille, a prominent feature with all Audi’s, looks even more impressive on this model and gives the car another stand out feature to rave about, not to mention the headlights which Audi always seem to get just right for each model. The interior however, is when you really will see where the value is. The beautiful cream leather throughout is simply stunning and you feel like you really are travelling in something special. There is plenty of space throughout the car with storage almost everywhere you look. As soon as the car starts, the dashboard comes to life and I really felt like I was in the latest Transformers film. Although you feel like you are about to take flight ,the dash is relatively easy to understand with all functions clearly marked in a stylish way. The steering wheel seems like it has a lot going on too but when driving it is a dream to have virtually all your commands in
54 // #intallaght / TWEET US
front without having to take your eyes off the road. The drive is exactly what you would expect from such a top-spec model. If you enjoy a comfy ride that slides through the gears rapidly with ease then the A7 is for you. When you add the fact that it’s an automatic you realise that you really are being spoilt here. It glides round corners and it’s so smooth on the road that most bumps are not even an issue. This model is a 2012 Audi A7 3.0TDI 204 QUATTRO S-T SE 4 with just one previous owner, and costs €41,950. If you think it’s the car for you well then why not drop down to the team and test drive the model today. There is finance available on all models so why not treat yourself?

Getting Your Property Ready For Sale by Anthony McGee
____________________________ @REA_MCGEE
Real Estate Alliance (REA) provided InTallaght with some excellent tips for those who wish to sell their home and get the best offer they can get.
SELLING YOUR HOME
Look at your home through the eyes of a prospective purchaser. Improvements should be made on the basis that the property looks and shows well. Even cosmetic improvements can help reveal a property’s true potential. Know your buyer. Step back and look at your home, the area it’s in and the type of people who live around you. This allows you to make a more educated decision about the type of buyer your home will appeal to.
TOP 10 TIPS FOR OUTSIDE:
1. First impressions last 2 Start at the front gate and paint if necessary 3 Trim hedges, weed lawns and flowerbeds and prune back bushes 4 Clear gutters 5 Mow the lawn 6 Replace damaged roof tiles 7 If the driveway is tarmac – blacken the surface 8 Keep garage door closed 9 Paint front door, facia, sills and window frames if required 10 Remove moss from driveway
TOP 5 TIPS FOR INSIDE:
1 De-clutter and create a spacious blank canvas for potential buyers 2 Clean and tidy away toys, dated furniture, laundry etc and keep surfaces clean and clutter free

3 Neutral colours suit every palette – if you’re going to paint keep it light and bright! 4 Open blinds and curtains, replace burned-out light bulbs, turn on lamps and allow light to fill the house 5 Dripping taps and showerheads are a real turn off – so make sure you turn them off and keep your bathroom spotless

BOOK
AUTHor louise o’neill
asking for it by genna patterson
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
Asking For It is the latest book by Cork author Louise O’Neill and is her second novel, released on September 3rd, 2015. We previously reviewed her debut novel, Only Ever Yours, which told of a fictional world where women are ‘designed’ to fit a purpose deemed by men. Asking For It continues O’Neill’s call on society to question its ways on how we deal with women, only this time it focuses on how women are perceived after sexual assault and rape. Inspired by the 2012 Steubenville rape case in the US, where a girl was assaulted and photographed while unconscious after a party, O’Neill brings the story to a small town in Ireland. The protagonist is 18-year-old Emma, a pretty, popular girl, who is
58 // #intallaght / TWEET US
quite unlikable as she only ever seems to want other people to be jealous of her. She is competitive with her friends and obsessed with what other people think of her. However, when drunk at a party, she has sex with one of the local heroes and footballers of the town, Paul, just one of her long list of conquests. Afterwards, she is offered drugs by some of his friends, and the next thing she remembers is waking up in a heap on her front porch, discovered by her horrified parents. She doesn’t know anything is wrong until photos of a group of the footballers, Paul included, abusing her in horrifying ways surface on a Facebook page called ‘Easy Emma’. Her friends and the town turn against her, and she starts to lie, saying that although she looked unconscious, she was only pretending, and that she was in on the joke. But the town calls her a whore, slag and many other horrendous words despite the fact that it was rape (as an unconscious person cannot give consent) based on her
‘promiscuous past’ and provocative dress. With no memory of the event, Emma is haunted by the photos, knowing that everyone she knows including her parents and brother, have seen her naked and engaged in sex acts. Her school and the Gardaí get involved and she is painted as a ‘slut’ who is trying to ruin the lives of the boys who abused her. This book really concentrates on the blame that is heaped on women and girls who try to come forward and speak out about what happened to them, but are shunned by society if they have any type of promiscuous past and especially if they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It’s a terrifying yet very real depiction of what goes on in many cases, in an Irish setting to drive home the point that it’s not ok to shame a woman for being attacked or to claim that she was ‘asking for it’. The frightening part is that this book shows how the blame falls often on the woman to prevent the attack and not on the men who do it, and calls bullsh*t on why if a woman is dressed provocatively, that it’s ‘ok’ for her to be raped because men ‘can’t control themselves.’ While it can be incredibly difficult to read at times, this is a book that definitely needed to be written to highlight just how wrongly we deal with rape and abuse victims in today’s world. A must read for everyone as a tool to discuss this difficult subject.

ocean memories by kerry smith _____________ The waves rose majestically against the stormy skies. They seemed to freeze there, like a moment in time, a black mountain against the inky explosion of clouds and thunder, before crashing violently into the jagged rocks below. The sea drew breath, greedily snatching the exhausted water back from the shore, before cruelly hurtling it onto the battered rocks again. Sarah shivered and drew back from the window. There was something evil about the relentless fury of the ocean, but it was strangely beautiful too. The moment the silver lightning struck, the water would light up like a glistening ice-rink. ‘Once upon a time I’d have spent hours painting it’ thought Sarah wryly. But that was a long time ago. She looked around the dusky room, bathed only in the luminous moonlight; her safe and trusty home for the past 64 years. ‘John should be back soon’ she thought, glancing again outside at the spectacular storm. She sat in her old wooden rocking-chair and gently moved back and forth. ‘Any time. Any time now’ she whispered to herself as she watched the door, expecting her beloved husband to walk through at any minute, before

her eyes fluttered closed. Loud footsteps pounding on the stairs awoke her. Her eyes flew open and Sarah jumped up, pushing her chair back in her haste, causing it to rock violently. She moved quickly to the door. ‘John? I was so worried about y….’ she stopped still; panic flooding through her as she heard multiple voices coming up the winding staircase. It was the intruders again. Why couldn’t they just leave her alone? This was HER home! Who were they and where was John? Terrified she slipped behind the door and prayed she wouldn’t be seen. The heavy wooden door swung open and the footsteps came inside. ‘And finally, we have the old lantern room’ a female voice announced. Two women and one man walked into the middle of the room and all stopped suddenly. Sarah hardly dared to move. ‘Why is the rocking-chair moving?’ the man asked sharply. The woman with a clipboard answered,‘Oh…. Um.. Well it’s quite drafty in here. Perhaps the chair caught in the breeze?’ The man turned to look at her. ‘Tell me again why this old lighthouse has never sold, truthfully?’ The woman sighed. ‘Ok, I’ll tell you’. Sarah squeezed her hands over her ears. Not again,
please not again. She couldn’t bear the lies they told. ‘Get out of my home!!!!’ she screamed in her head. She slid silently down the wall, wrapping her old, gnarled hands around her legs, weeping. ‘Well,’ clipboard woman began; ‘Nearly sixty-five years ago a couple were on their boat when they were caught in a terrible storm and shipwrecked. The young woman was found alive but later died from her injuries, but the husband’s body was never found. The lighthouse was shut down immediately afterwards as the experts said there were faults with it. As soon as it closed, local people said strange sightings began happening in the lantern room. They would see a woman standing at the window who would disappear when someone came to investigate. Others have seen the rocking-chair moving of its own accord with no-one to be seen. Some say that she is the shipwrecked woman, trying to prevent anyone reopening it, thus preventing any more tragedies. Others believe a more tragic and beautiful tale. They believe that the woman is unaware that she has died and is waiting here, for her husband. The other woman shivered. ‘Which do you believe?’ she asked. The woman smiled sadly and shrugged.
‘I prefer to believe the latter. Two lovers torn apart through the act of nature but who remain soul-mates, even after death’. ‘Til after death do us part,’ whispered the other woman. ‘Yes,’ smiled the estateagent. Sarah stood slowly and glided towards the window. She looked down to the raging sea below and smiled wistfully. ‘We’ll always be together John’ she whispered. ‘And I’ll wait for you, right here. Come back to me as soon as you are ready. I’ll be here. But until then, you will always be my beautiful ocean memory.’ Kerry Smith, 26, lives in County Wicklow. Since our last article in InTallaght Magazine, we have had a very successful Fresher’s Week at IT Tallaght Students’ Union.
On Friday September 18th, we hosted the National Council at IT Tallaght. Students’ Union officers from across the country within the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) represented their students and a great day was had by all. This was an exciting moment for ITTSU as the National Council has never been hosted here before. Throughout the rest of the year, we will be attending the National Council and many other events organised by USI in various colleges across the country. The week ran from September 21st to 25th and all students got involved in what was an enjoyable week for all. Fresher’s Week began with a 666 Hot Wing Challenge which was organised by Just Wing It. This was followed by Comedian Bernard O’Shea live on campus. On Wednesday we had comedy hypnotist Michael McCoy, and this was followed by a Blind Date game which was done in association with Nando’s Tallaght. The lucky winners received vouchers for their date in the

restaurant. We also had giant inflatables and an ice cream van on campus during Freshers’ Week and on the final day we ran a FIFA 16 competition in the Students’ Union building. We also had mini manicures and popcorn too! The students of the college also had the opportunity to sign up for the many clubs and societies available at IT Tallaght. It was great to see so many students get involved in all the activities throughout the week and from our experience here in the college, we recommend joining a club or society as it can be a great way to meet new people from other courses etc. There is bound to be at least one club or society that interests each person here. Radio Week was run by the Radio Society in the college in memory of Conor Early, a student who tragically passed away during the summer. The week was run by the students and ITT FM was broadcasting from 10am to 7pm Monday September 21st to Friday September 25th online and on fm. There were lots of competitions and goodies throughout the week and we would like to say a big thank you to Fuschia, Leisureplex, Nando’s Tallaght, Dominos Tallaght, Goodybags.ie, Just Wing It, The Square and AIB. We would also like to congratulate all students for taking part and getting involved in helping make the overall week a success. Students are now settled back into college and to see more of what ITT SU has been up to, check our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ ITTallaghtSU and also see our edition in the InTallaght magazine. Additionally we would like to congratulate Olwen Carey and the Dublin Ladies Senior Team on an excellent effort at the All Ireland Football final on Sunday September 27th against Cork. Unfortunately the Dublin team didn’t win, but all the ladies played their best anyway. Olwen is a 3rd year accounting student in IT Tallaght and she also plays on the Ladies GAA team.

Credit Union tops Irish customer experience survey by GENNA PATERSON ________________________ Widespread disappointment as Web Summit relocates to Lisbon By FERGUS MCNALLY ________________________ Co-Founder of Web Summit Paddy Cosgrave was joined in Lisbon today by Portugal’s Deputy Prime Minister Paulo Portas, as he announced that the event will take place in Lisbon for the next three years. Taoiseach Enda Kenny who was at the National Ploughing Championships has said he is “very disappointed” to hear the international Web Summit is moving to Lisbon in Portugal from next year and he added that he hoped that the summit would return to Ireland in the future. Paddy Cosgrave, chief executive and co-founder said the summit had grown beyond what he and co-founders thought possible five years ago when the first one took place in Dublin. Cosgrave told RTÉ News that they had chosen the Portuguese capital because it has strong infrastructure, a thriving start-up community and a world-class venue. The company, which employs 130 people at its headquarters in Dublin, will continue to be based in Ireland. It is estimated that the event, which was first held in 2010 with just 400 people attending, brought in €35m to the local economy last year with over 22,000 people attending.

A survey by Ámarach Research for CEXI.org of Irish brands showed that Credit Unions were favourite for customer experience. The survey was based on a template by KPMG Nunwood, on similar reports in the UK, US and Australia. CEXI director Inga Ryan said that its success was down to the ethos and culture of Credit Unions. “Credit Unions are deeply embedded in the communities in which they operate. They are member-owned organisations which provide a personal financial service to their customers. Like most of the top performers they scored very highly on empathy, which is something you can’t buy or recreate through advertising.” Second place in the survey went to the National Concert Hall and third to Dublin Zoo. The top ten was rounded out by Aldi, Boots, Butlers Chocolate, Rabobank, An Post, Penneys, Hailo and Lloyds Pharmacy. Gerard O’Neill of Amárach Research said that the retail brands’ strong performances was interesting because “if the survey was focused solely on price this wouldn’t be a surprise but they scored well across several customer experience categories including quality of service and empathy.” Unsurprisingly Irish Water failed to make the Top 100, given the recent controversies over billing issues, while businesses in banking and the financial sector gained poor results due to the troubled economic climate in the last few years.
Spuds to get a €1m boost by FERGUS MCNALLY ___________________________ Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD launched a new €1m marketing campaign on September 17th, which will be managed by Bord Bia aimed at boosting potato consumption among Irish consumers. Sales of fresh potatoes by retailers in Ireland have declined by 25% over the last decade and by as much as one third between 2002 and 2014, according to a recent study. At today’s launch Minister Simon Coveney said: “The potato is part of our culture like no other food, inextricably linked to Ireland’s story and part of who we are. “This campaign will bring the different varieties and versatility of the Irish potato to a younger generation.” The initiative will be co-funded by the EU, Ireland’s potato industry and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and will be run in conjunction with the British Potato Council. The new promotional campaign, entitled “Potatoes - more than a bit on the side”, will focus on younger consumers, in particular 22-44 year old females. The campaign will include print and digital advertising using a ‘cheeky’ potato character and tasty recipes to show potatoes are ‘more than a bit on the side’. The campaign kicked off with National Potato Day on Friday October 2.

The first Irishman to take to the Octagon during the prelims on the night will be Cathal Pendred as he faces off against Englishman Tom Breese and looks to silence his doubters following a number of fights dubbed “boring” by the UFC faithful Stateside. Following on from “The Punisher” will be Aisling Daly, the exciting prospect from Dublin, who faces off against Brazilian battler Ericka Almeida before Neil Seery joins the action to take on Jon Delos Reyes in a flyweight bout. The final Irishman to fight on the preliminary card will be Ulsterman Norman Parke who takes on Iran’s Reza Madadi. In total the main card will see four fights on the night kicking off with Tallaght’s very own Paddy “The Hooligan” Holohan stepping into the octagon to face off against American Louis “Da Last Samurai” Smolka in what promises to be an all out blockbuster. The co-main event sees the two American heavyweights Miocic and Rothwell go head to head in what will be a bruising affair before all eyes turn towards Joseph “Irish” Duffy and Dustin “Diamond” Poirier in what should prove to be the fight of the night as a man who has beaten McGregor (Duffy) and a man who was knocked out by him (Poirier) go head to head.

Tallaght Stadium hosts Women’s International by jack madden ____________________________
Mary’s Man McLaughlin forced to retire by JACK MADDEN ____________________________
Tallaght Stadium played host to Ireland’s opening qualifier of their Euro 2017 campaign when they faced off against Finland on Monday September 21st. There was a fantastic atmosphere at the game helped by an impressive attendance of 2,905 people, which was a notable 80% increase on the 1,600 that turned out to see the team face off against European Champions Germany in a recent World Cup qualification match. This is a great sign for Irish women’s football which has seen the number of registered players grow from 12,500 to 23,000 in the past nine years. One of the great talents on display during the game was local girl Katie McCabe, who InTallaght interviewed in
Leinster Rugby and St Mary’s College legend Kevin McLaughlin has been forced to retire from rugby following recent concerns for his well-being due to a number of issues around concussion. The news came as a massive blow for McLaughlin who had been named as Leinster’s captain for the duration of Ireland’s Rugby World Cup campaign having become a leader during his time with the province. A concussion on the opening day of the Guinness Pro12 season against Edinburgh saw concerns mount over McLaughlin’s vulnerability to concussion and having met with a neurologist to discuss his case it was decided it would be best for his health if he retired from the game. McLaughlin made 115 appearances for Leinster between 2007 and 2015 scoring four tries in the process and winning the Heineken Cup and Pro12 titles an impressive three times apiece. He was capped for his country eight times having made his debut against Italy at Croke Park in 2010 and will be sadly missed by Leinster and Irish fans alike as he moves on to the next chapter in his life.

our last issue and has become a starring member of the Irish women’s squad at only 20 years of age. While the game itself saw Ireland disappointingly lose 2-0 to the visitors who had a speculative effort to thank for their half-time lead, the whole occasion was brilliant and marked out the support that is currently on display for Irish women’s sports. An interactive fan zone had kept fans entertained before the 19.30 kick off and at half time the fans got a special treat when the Irish Women’s Cricket Team took to the field (despite the rain) to show their support for their fellow Irish athletes. The crowd of almost 3,000 welcomed the team with a brilliant round of applause and despite the rain the girls clearly enjoyed their visit to the field of play. Ireland women are in action again this month with an away game in Portugal, with their next home match on November 26th when they take on Spain at Tallaght Stadium in their third qualifying match! Let’s all get involved and get down to Tallaght Stadium to support our Girls in Green!
in the pre-season the men’s senior team is ready to take on the league and cup this year. Their first game is in Tullamore on September 26th. Meanwhile last season was a fantastic one for the Tallaght women’s team, with the recruitment drive during the summer numbers having almost doubled it. With the new season soon approaching and their
first game against Blackrock at home on October 4th, come out and cheer the girls on! The Tallaght Youths team had a great summer and rugby on the green was a success. Numbers for the youths development program almost tripled and with the addition on the under 6’s (Leprechaun rugby) the future is bright and secure for Tallaght Rugby.
Local Heroes star as Dublin regain All Ireland by jack madden
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTJACK
The Boys in Blue are All Ireland Champs once again having brilliantly defeated Kerry in the All Ireland Senior Football Championship Final at Croke Park.
A dogged performance from the Dubs amid horrific conditions at Headquarters saw them claim what could only be described as a sweet but unsightly victory over their old rivals Kerry to bring the Sam Maguire back to the capital. Dublin were the better team throughout but made hard work of putting the game to bed as the 0-12 to 0-9 score line (the lowest All Ireland Final score in the last twelve years)
might suggest and neither side looked like scoring a goal on the day. In fact with minutes to spare it was Kerry who looked all the more likely to provide the fans with a goal on a day that football was hardly meant for as they hammered away frantically at the Dubs’ defence trying to find a chink and fight their way back into the contest. The win will have been extra special for the Sky Blues as it was the first time they’ve beaten Kerry three times in a row in the Championship and reaped revenge for two final defeats on the trot as they went on to claim their third title in five years, truly putting them among the greatest teams in footballing history. Local lads Denis Bastick from Templeogue Synge Street, Kevin McManamon of St Judes, Lucan Sarsfield’s Emmet O’Conghaile, Ballyboden St Enda’s Michael Darragh MacAuley and of course the Round Towers man and super coach Jim Gavin were all deserved and prominent heroes on the day.
In winning the game MacAuley, McManamon and Bastick added their third All Ireland medals in the space of five years while O’Conghaile added his second having been a fixture in this Dublin squad for the past four years. A special homecoming celebration for the All Ireland winning side took place on Sunday September 21st on a stage just south of the Spire on O’Connell Street and was hosted by Lord Mayor Críona Ní Dhálaigh. Thousands of fans turned out to welcome the Sam Maguire home to Dublin for the 25th time in history as joyous scenes met the team on the streets of the capital. The trophy was paraded on stage to raucous fanfare before heading out to Parnell’s GAA Club, the club of team captain Stephen Cluxton, having previously visited Crumlin and Temple Street’s Childrens hospitals on what is a traditional trip before the team’s victory parade.

RTÉ explain position on LOI TV Coverage by padraig conlon
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
Last month Shamrock Rovers made a request to RTÉ to stop covering live broadcasts of their matches in a dispute over the lack of compensation paid to clubs featured in televised games. In researching this article I first contacted the FAI. They fobbed me off with the same prepared statement they gave everyone else about how “live televised League matches make the League attractive to sponsors such as SSE Airtricity and EA Sports. The TV coverage is also helpful to clubs when they are negotiating their own sponsorship deals and selling pitch-side advertising.”
I then contacted UEFA who said it is a contractual matter between the clubs and the TV channel and therefore they couldn’t comment on it. They went on
70 // #intallaght / TWEET US
to say that UEFA is also not involved in the selling of TV rights of national leagues to broadcasters. Finally I got on to RTÉ and out of the three organisations I contacted I have to say that they were the most helpful. Head of Sport at RTÉ, Ryle Nugent invited me out to Montrose to meet up and put my questions regarding RTÉ’s coverage of the League of Ireland directly to him. Last year RTÉ announced that they would show 78 LOI matches live over four years. This breaks down to roughly 20 games a year. So far you’ve broadcast eight, a long way off what was promised. Why? The contract started in August 2013 and finishes in December 2018 so basically it covers five seasons and we’re committed to 17 signals a year and we will hit our 17 signals this year. I think we’ve done nine and we have eight to come, those signals include cup semi-finals and finals. In fairness to the FAI, and credit to them because it’s not something you can do with all contracts, we try to work with the league where we can. If they are really good cup matches we might do an additional cup match and drop a league match. For example this year they agreed with us and Dundalk to agree the home leg of their Champions
League Qualifier with BATE, so there is a bit of flexibility but in terms of our commitment to 17 matches and we will deliver 17 matches this year, like we did last year and like we will for the next three years of the contract. From RTÉ’s point of view are you guys happy with viewing figures for the games? People can be fixated with ratings but ratings aren’t the be all and end all, they’re not the only criteria by which we judge our output. We do have a commercial imperative in RTÉ which is clearly driven by ratings, ratings count but we also have a public service commitment where ratings are less of a concern. If you were measuring the league coverage on ratings alone then you wouldn’t broadcast as many as we are doing but we’re not measuring just on ratings alone, we’re measuring it on the principals we now have in RTÉ Sport and have been forced to readjust and look at what we do and how we do it in terms of our strategy and that strategy is built around national teams, national games and major events but people when they think “national games” they automatically think of the GAA, and rightly so, it is our national game but there is a very strong argument in my head to try and synopsise that “national games” also covers the national soccer league, to a lesser extent the national rugby league, and to a greater extent horse racing. These are also “national games” so we have a responsibility to these games, international teams and major sports events and that’s where the strategy is. Covering the SSE Airtricity League and the FAI Cup definitely falls within that strategy. Yes commercial is important, yes ratings are important in the totality but it’s not the be all and end all, but it is relevant. In an interview he gave last October, John Delaney referred to the league as a “problem child” and claimed that RTÉ offered the FAI money not to show the League, what are your thoughts on this? I’m not aware about the quote but let’s grab that. You would like the league to have more engagement with the
audience than it does. I asked audience research to have a look at the games this year and they’re averaging in and around 60,000 viewers per game we’ve shown. That gives an average share of around 4.5/4.6 of the audience. The average share of the RTÉ 2 audience in peak time is over 7% so you can see that’s the barometer but it’s very important to say, that’s not a criticism, it is what it is. When people say, “Well you should be doing two matches a week” you’ve got to contextualise it. I absolutely accept 100% that every constituency of lovers of their sport believes more should be shown and more media coverage should be given specifically by the national broadcaster. But I can put my hand on my heart and look you in the eye and say there are those that think we’re not doing enough GAA, there are those that think we’re not doing enough rugby, and on through the sports. So within that view I can understand it but our job is to reflect, the best we can the varied multiple interests of the audience in sport and the SSE Airtricity League has it’s place and I would say that 17 live matches and a weekly hour-long programme like Soccer Republic, that is a more than reasonable commitment from the national broadcaster to the league. We have limited budgets so we have had to make choices in the last four or five years in particular. Those choices have been stark and they’ve been hard and the Airtricity League has not significantly suffered in those choices. We had to walk away from the English Premier League to make savings, we had to walk away from the Heineken European Cup and the Pro 12 in rugby, from professional boxing, of which we were doing a significant amount. I think the suggestion that we’re not doing enough is, in this instance, unfair on occasion. RTÉ has cameras at every Premier Division game to record highlights for Soccer Republic, could RTÉ not do some deal with the clubs whereby they could stream these games live on their club websites which could

maybe generate them some muchneeded revenue? I think it’s important to remember that our relationship isn’t with the individual clubs, it’s with the FAI as it is in every contract we have, i.e. our contract for the Champions League is with UEFA. The FAI choose, as do every other organisation, how they package and deliver their media rights to the industry. So we are in a contract that is being shared with Setanta, who also have commitments they’ve made with the FAI. Not everything is within our gift. And even if it were within our gift there is this perception that you can just rock up, throw a camera on it and it’ll be grand. It won’t be. These things cost a significant amount of money. Do you think Rovers have a point on the issue of compensation? I can’t comment on this because it’s not our business how Shamrock Rovers deal with the FAI. It is not our business how the FAI deal with Shamrock Rovers and I get aggravated when I hear people say how RTÉ Sport should run its business when they fundamentally don’t understand what’s going on underneath the bonnet. What is good for the league needs to be decided by the clubs and the governing body, not by RTÉ. So RTÉ are going to broadcast Rovers home game against Dundalk in October regardless of what the clubs say? What we will do, and I’m very quick again to say this isn’t us with Rovers or Dundalk it’s about us saying, ‘right what is the best game for the audience, where’s the story?’, there’s no point in us doing a mid-division match. Whatever chance you have of exposure is around the big games. Again that’s nothing specific about the Airtricity
League. Look at the English Premier League, if there’s a Sunday afternoon game between two mid table teams you are less likely to watch it but if it’s Manchester United vs Manchester City the bums will be on the seats. It’s the same everywhere, the best teams are the ones people want to see. When Rovers play Dundalk next month that’s the match we want to see, it isn’t about trying to upset Rovers, it’s about trying to put the best product we can, for the league, and for us, to the audience. In July Dundalk played Cork City in Oriel Park in a top of the table clash yet RTÉ decided not to broadcast the game. Why was this? We have made the decision, and part of our agreement with the FAI is that we concentrate predominantly on the beginning and the end of the season. We have the ability to drop in every now and then, but again they have relationships with other broadcasters so that has to be taken into account. There’s an argument to be made every single time, ‘well that match is the most important’ – it may be at that particular time but frankly towards the business end of the league usually is where the vast majority of the interest is and that’s where we choose to focus. If we shoot off too many signals too early then we’ll get criticised at the back end of the season if we’ve only got three signals left and there’s still six weeks left in the league. So there’s a bit of ‘you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t’. I understand the frustration but over the balance of a whole season I’m not sure it’s fair. Do you feel RTÉ are doing everything they can to support the league? Within the constraints that we have I think we are doing everything we can,
I can genuinely sit in front of any of the boards or of the supporters groups and say ‘show me where we don’t care about the league?’ absolutely. Something you touched on earlier was the issue of kick-off times and I’d like to explain how this works. Kick-off times are difficult for everybody but what I would say regarding that is sometimes we have clashes because we have contracts with other organisations and we have to make a decision about what we can do. What we’re trying to do from our perspective, which in theory is supposed to benefit the league, is put the games in the places that we think we’ll get the best audience for. So Monday night 7.30 isn’t ideal for supporters, I absolutely accept it isn’t ideal for travelling supporters in particular, but is it a place where it is clear the volume of people sitting down to watch television, the available audience, is there and it absolutely is. So I suppose it brings it back to the fans and the clubs, to the league, which is more important. If the decision is that television is not more important well then ok, stop showing it. That’s not a threat or anything, but if you want to promote the league, and you want to get the best available audience to give it its best chance then you’re going to have to take it from the broadcasters perspective that Monday at 7/8 o’clock is where the bums are on seats. The vast majority of people on a Monday night ain’t going out. That’s where the biggest audience is and that’s what we try to do because we want this to be as good as it possibly can, it’s in our interests as
well. I accept that it inconveniences but it’s not solely us that do it, our friends across the water do it on a regular basis. Sometimes we have no choice, there are clashes with other sports so it’s a balancing act. After a few early teething problems I think Soccer Republic has developed into a very good programme but what’s with the scheduling that it’s aired at 11pm on a Monday night? Soccer Republic’s ratings have improved in comparison to the slot that Monday Night Soccer was which was 7.30. At the time I know there was a fairly strong reaction from people who felt it was being pushed to the perimeter of the schedule. It wasn’t doing particularly good business in the slot it was in. I accept that the fact it’s later maybe excludes a lot of younger viewers but with the RTÉ Player this is not so much of a challenge and the viewing figures have increased. We work very hard with that show as well. Pound for pound if you look at the production standards of that show and what we do across all our sports, it stands up to scrutiny. It’s not something that’s just slapped together and thrown out there on a Monday night when we hope it’s not going to receive much attention. There is a dedicated team of guys who work extremely hard to get it as right as we possibly can and we are proud of that programme. Finally, Sky Sports are going to start showing EPL games on a Friday night next season, what kind of effect may this have on how the Airtricity League is broadcast? We have to look at all the challenges the one thing you can be guaranteed now in the sports broadcasting landscape is that you aren’t going to get a year-on-year mirror of what happened before because everybody’s looking for an edge or look at different ways for what they’re doing. The plates are moving all the time. We’ll deal with every season as it comes along, but trying to preempt it is not doable because you’re never sure what’s going to come around the corner. Friday night games in the EPL? It’ll
be interesting to see how they work. I don’t know when they’re planning on showing these games, it could be near the end of their season, I just don’t know how it’s going to play out. It is an incredibly competitive market and there is a reasonable comparison to be made between what the SSE Airtricity League is up against and what RTÉ Sport is up against. We are competing against the biggest and best funded broadcasters not only in Europe but arguably the world. Everybody in this country who is working in an industry that has competition from the UK is invariably working trying to chase down Big Brother and that’s what we do, we’re all fighting for our spot. And it’s not easy, it’s incredibly challenging but what I
think we are good at is having a bit of dexterity and seeing what’s coming down the line, you just have to box clever. I understand why the core fans and supporters of the Airtricity League get worried at times but like I said to you at the very outset, and we’ve come full circle here, I can genuinely sit in front of any of the boards of the clubs or of the supporters groups and say ‘show me where we don’t care about the league?’ I can sit in front of these guys and say honestly that I think what we do for the league is fair.
