A NOTE FROM

THE EDITOR

Welcome to InTallaght Magazine, where we are all set for Halloween with the corpse that is Lance Armstrong’s cycling career in our feature interview with Irish journalist David Walsh who exposed his doping lies. David talks about the movie The Program, which is based on his book, starring Chris O’Dowd, Dustin Hoffman and Ben Foster and how the movie actually makes Lance look better than he behaved! Following that our journalist Rachel caught up with Vogue Williams who recently won Bear Grylls: Mission Survive and who told her that the worst part of the show was “drinking your own p*ss”! She also told us about how her ex-husband Brian McFadden and her remain good friends still and that they are trying to do the best for his kids. Next up our journalist Padraig went along on a night of good deeds with VISIT, the homeless charity who feed and provide blankets and more to the homeless people of Tallaght. VISIT was set up by Nicola Moore a year ago and the charity relies on donations, of which the local businesses have been so generous. Read the article to hear more on their amazing efforts to combat this growing problem in our area.

McGregor fighting homeless crisis in Ireland By Kelly Evans ____________________________ Irish UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has released a statement on social media that he will be donating €50,000 to help fight the ongoing homelessness crisis in Ireland. The money will be split into two €25,000 donations and will be donated to both the Simon Community and Focus Ireland. These donations will help to fund a mobile health clinic and support family services. “I am donating €50,000 from these events to help boost resources of those who are fighting the homeless crisis in Ireland, as we head into the colder weather.” McGregor also stated that he put some thought and research into choosing the organisations that he would donate to so the money would be put to the best use. “€25,000 will go to the hardworking Simon Community homeless

charity. This €25,000 will fund the mobile health clinic for a full year so the people in need can get the treatment they need, when they need it. The other €25,000 I will donate to Focus Ireland which will go towards the Family Services Division which helps family’s (sic) in crisis move on from homelessness.” “I put time into researching both the Simon Community and Focus Ireland charities. The work of both these organisations is unparalleled with the homeless crisis in our country.” McGregor also made appearances at a series of events around the country in aid of the country’s ongoing crisis. “We have put together a four day event across the country. Meet fans. Have some fun. Celebrate life, and also help build money to put towards the major crisis we have in our country.”

Dublin Senator calls on Government to make IVF state-funded By Genna Patterson __________________________ Catherine Noone, Dublin Senator and Fine Gael candidate for Dublin West, has called on the Government to cover IVF treatment under the state’s medical system. Ireland is currently one of only three countries in the EU where fertility treatments are not funded by the state. The World Health Organisation recognises infertility as a disease and yet it is the only medical condition that isn’t covered under our public health system. Senator Noone pointed out that even plastic surgery is on the public system here currently. She said:

“I believe the current system is unfair as many Irish couples cannot afford the €4,000 to €6,000 fee per cycle of IVF treatment. This discriminates against lower income couples with fertility problems, who wish to start a family, but are not in a financial position to afford IVF treatment.” According to Dr. Mary Wingfield, consultant obstetrician gynaecologist at Holles Street and director of Merrion Fertility Clinic, one in six Irish couples have infertility, and at least half of them will need IVF. Senator Noone said that in Scotland and Wales couples are entitled to NHS-funded cycles of IVF regardless of income while couples in Northern Ireland are funded for one cycle. “Those in England receive one, two or three cycles, depending on their postcode and Belgium has had it since the 1990s and the UK since the early 2000s.” She expressed concern that the cost of IVF is forcing many Irish couples, who can’t afford it, to travel abroad to Eastern Europe and India, where guidelines and practices may not be as good and called on the the Department of Health to include fertility treatments under the state health system.

Senator Zappone invited a panel of early years experts to discuss early years investment including Maura McMahon (An Cosán), Teresa Heeney (Early Childhood Ireland), Dr. Geraldine French (St. Patrick’s College, DCU), Aishling Kelly (An Cosán) and Marlene McCormack (St. Patrick’s College, DCU). Ireland’s new passport card launched By Rachel Lynch ____________________________ We have been hearing for awhile now that Ireland was set to introduce a new credit card style passport and October 5th was the day for it. Passports are not the easiest of documents to be carrying around with you on your travels but something that you can bring to the airport in your purse or wallet is the perfect solution for all. Unfortunately it is only acceptable for EU travel at the moment but we expect the new style passport will be a huge hit throughout the country. You can apply online and it will cost you just €35.00 which isn’t too bad. The only catch to the introduction of the card is you must already hold a valid passport to apply.

I started working in Dunnes Stores here in The Square when I was about 16, I was doing my Leaving Cert and working part time and then I went into full time. Ever since that, 15 and a half years I have been there. It’s decent, there are good times and bad, it’s not as good as it used to be but it’s a job at the end of the day. To relax at the weekend I have a few drinks, normally I go to the Mill or it could be Aherns, I like to mix it around, I don’t like to go to the same pub. I support Man United and watch them the weekend, any decent soccer that’s on I watch. I try to get over to three games a year, I haven’t got over in the last few years but in the new year I plan to get over. I’m more into the GAA now, I played it for years, played for Thomas Davis for about 16 years. I do be in Croke Park a lot. I don’t support Dublin, I support Kerry because when I grew up as a kid my Uncle was from Cork and my Dad used

to go to all the Cork and Kerry matches and my Dad was big into Kerry as a kid so he named me after one of the famous football players from Kerry so ever since I have always been Kerry. Lying or Living Strong? With the release of the Lance Armstrong biopic The Program this month, David Walsh, sports journalist and writer of the book it’s based on, gave us insights to his quest for truth at the film’s premiere in The Lighthouse. by PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

On Monday October 22nd 2012 the career of disgraced drugs cheat cyclist Lance Armstrong was finally ended.

The Sunday Times chief sports writer David Walsh had worked on bringing about that day for over a decade. The story had consumed him, brought him great stress but finally wonderful vindication. He was the man responsible for exposing the biggest sports fraud in history. A new film based on his book Seven Deadly Sins, which dealt with his pursuit of the Texan who cheated his way to seven Tour de France victories in a row, has just opened. Titled The Program it tells the story of how the Kilkenny native went about uncovering one of the biggest lies ever told in sport. It’s July 1999 and the Tour de France has reached the ninth stage. The cyclists have spent the day crossing five Alpine passes, travelling 240 km almost all uphill. As the race nears it’s conclusion two riders, Ivan Gotti and Fernando Escartín are well in front of

the chasing group that includes Lance Armstrong, a 27-year-old Texan who is taking part in his first Tour since overcoming testicular cancer just a year earlier. Suddenly the American breaks from the pack and speeds toward the two leaders. He flies past them to win the stage and take a significant step towards winning his first ever Tour de France. The fairytale is complete a week later when he rides down the ChampsÉlysées triumphantly wearing the Yellow Jersey, arms aloft he crosses the finish line after winning the toughest sports event on the planet. The world goes crazy for a story even Hollywood couldn’t script. Everyone is in awe of this new hero, this never say die warrior who has fought back from the brink to become a champion. Well not exactly everyone. Irish journalist David Walsh doesn’t buy it. He is convinced Lance has been taking performance enhancing drugs and decides he is going to prove it. So began a 13 year campaign by David to expose Lance as a cheat. “From day one I knew Armstrong was

From day one I knew Armstrong was doping so how was I going to let that go? How could I walk away from the story? doping so how was I going to let that go? How could I walk away from the story?” he says. “Everything Armstrong did in that race was the profile of a cheat. Every question he answered, the way he treated Christophe Bassons (a French rider.) That young man was anti-doping but he was bullied out of the Tour de France that year and his biggest bully was Lance,” says David. He and a (very) few of his colleagues who pointed the finger of suspicion

david walsh vs lance at Lance were immediately branded as scum. How could they attack a cancer survivor who had become an inspiration to millions of people? How could they do this to a man who had stared death in the face and come out the other side even stronger? Surely a man who had just beaten cancer would never risk his health by taking performance-enhancing drugs? David is a self confessed “lifelong cycling enthusiast” who had been covering the Tour since 1982 when he started to report on the progress of then rising Irish star Sean Kelly and later Stephen Roche. Two years later he and his wife Mary moved to Paris to follow his dream and make his living writing about cycling. There he became friendly with the third Irishman in the peloton, a young Dubliner called Paul Kimmage and the pair formed a loyal friendship that is still sound today.

HUNT FOR THE TRUTH

In 2004 David wrote LA Confidential, then came Seven Deadly Sins upon which The Program is based. Is he happy with the movie? “Yes I am and I hope people enjoy it as well. What I like about the film is it is pretty true to the story,” he says. “The film has tried to do a lot, some people will feel it has tried to do too much. The alternative was to zoom in on one little aspect of the story and accentuate that and try and make it interesting in that way. I like the fact that Floyd Landis has a central role in this because I think he had a very central role in the unfolding of the story and of course it’s hugely ironic that Floyd Landis, who doped pretty much all through his career then was caught after winning the Tour de France, lied for two years, lied through his teeth. He eventually explores every option to get back into the sport, every door is closed and then he goes out the door that says “truth.” When he wrote Seven Deadly Sins he thought “at most it might sell 10, 20 or 30,000 copies. I sold an awful lot more than that.” Within three weeks of the book coming out he literally had people queuing up to do a film. The

My first thought was Chris O’Dowd is 6 ft 3” and I’m 5 ft 6” – that’s brilliant because I would have loved to have been taller and I’d love to have his charisma and his ability to make people laugh first offer he got was for a docudrama. It was from a woman who had done a docudrama about Fred West played by Dominic West, who plays McNulty in TV show The Wire. David says he thought “Wow I’d love to work with a woman who worked with Dominic West!” Just when he got his head around that, two guys from Los Angeles rang and said “look we’d love to make a movie from your book” They flew over to meet him the next day. “I thought, that’s it, these guys are going to make a movie!” he says. “Richard my friend, who was kind of acting as my agent said ‘hold on, hold on there’ll be something else’ and within a week Working Title had come in. They’re this huge company in London. I’m meeting this guy Tim Bevan. I googled him before going to meet him and it turns out he was the producer for Fargo, the Coen Brothers movie, producer for The Big Lebowski, producer for O Brother Where Are Thou,” this guy and the Coen brothers were like that, and I’m thinking ‘I don’t want to shake this guy’s hand I want to genuflect before him’. He said, ‘we want to make this movie David, and we want to make it immediately. We want to be the first Armstrong movie out there. I can see us being on location

in five months’. That’s kind of the whirlwind thing that happened. People keep saying it must be so surreal but it’s all actually very real because it was just happening. Suddenly you had a contract in front of you and it’s ‘sign that!’” How did he feel when he heard Chris O’Dowd would be playing him in the movie? “My first thought was he’s 6 ft 3 and I’m 5 ft 6 – that’s brilliant because I would have loved to have been taller and I’d love to have his charisma and his ability to make people laugh,” he says. “I wondered, I’d seen him in Bridesmaids, The IT Crowd and Moone Boy and I thought ‘yeah he does comedy really well and he’s got an engaging personality but can he do a journalist?’ Then I came across an interview he’d done where he’d said that in secondary school he had wanted to be a journalist and I have to say that watching him on screen I think he does a journalist very well. That scene on the day of the 99 Tour where Lance has done the brilliant ride in the mountains Chris is in the restaurant with the three journalists and he is saying ‘did you see him today going up the mountains? He was using his brake to go uphill? Did you see that?’ And the guys are getting uncomfortable and one of them says

screenings and publicity and there are very few people with big names who I have seen who give as much of themselves in a crowd of people, he has been fantastic. He does everything with such good grace and such fun, he’s been a real joy to be around.” What made David most excited about the movie was Dustin Hoffman having a small part. “I love that,” he says, “because he was in All The President’s Men,” one of the best movies ever made about reporters struggling to tell the truth in the face of widespread scepticism.”

CRUSHING ADVERSARIES

‘Why are you getting so obsessed about this?’ And he says ‘Why aren’t you getting obsessed, you’re meant to be journalists?’ Well I saw that scene and I remembered having that scene multiple times with two, three journalists where I was the bad guy because I was prodding the guys saying ‘Come on, you can’t believe this, it’s just not true.’ People wanted to believe it because this guy had come back from cancer.”

MEETING CHRIS

David’s eldest daughter Kate had a surreal experience with Chris prior to filming. Three days after he told his family that the Roscommon man would be playing him in the film Kate was out for a drink in Bermondsey in London in the Shortwave Cinema Bar with her fiancé Jamie when Chris and his wife Dawn O’Porter walk in. So Chris goes to the bar, orders drinks for himself and Dawn, they look around to where they’re going to sit then they come down and sit alongside Kate and Jamie, literally alongside them. I’ll let David tell the story from here. “So first thing he says to Dawn is ‘have I told you about this movie I’ve just taken?’ She says ‘no’ and he says ‘I’m playing David Walsh in a film about Lance Armstrong’ and she

says ‘Who’s David Walsh?’ Chris says ‘Sunday Times journalist, you would’ve seen him on television at the time the Armstrong story was breaking’ and she said ‘no.’ Anyway he goes on to tell her he’d read the book and he was really looking forward to doing the movie. Well Kate and Jamie’s ears are pricked as they’ve heard everything! People are coming over getting pictures with Chris, getting autographs and generally being obtrusive and Kate feels bad because she’s been eavesdropping so eventually her and Jamie decide to leave and she gets outside the bar and she rings me and tells me the story about Chris sitting next to them. She asks me should I go back in and introduce myself and I say ‘don’t be silly, it’s such a coincidence. Go back in there, tell him you’re David Walsh’s eldest daughter, it’ll only take ten seconds.’ So she walks back in with Jamie and she stands in front of Chris and Dawn and says, ‘I’m really sorry for intruding but I just wanted to say…’ and she paused. And Chris says ‘you and your partner would like to have a foursome with us?!’ Kate says ‘No, it’s just that I’m David Walsh’s eldest daughter…’ and he says ‘Oh f**k!’ I have to say I’ve come across Chris quite a lot over the last few weeks with

Lance made life hell for anyone who dared question his integrity. Did David ever feel scared of Lance? “No I didn’t. The thing about Lance when it came to his adversaries he didn’t want to beat them he wanted to crush them, he wanted to grind them into dust and I think Greg LeMond was possibly the biggest victim of that,” he says. “I mean Lance went after his business and he destroyed it and he tried to destroy Greg’s reputation and to a degree he was pretty successful. He made out that Greg had alcohol problems and recreational drug problems, all lies but when Lance said things people believed it because he had that influence. I never really felt that intimidated. Most of it I could deal with stuff like ‘David Walsh is the worst journalist I know’ or ‘David Walsh is a little f***ing troll, he has no morals, no ethics,’ that kind of stuff I would get all the time. He would say pretty horrible things, and to some degree he’s still saying them. For me that was just because we were adversaries and he was going to do whatever he could to protect himself and I kind of understood it.” The last direct contact he had with Lance was a face to face interview in 2001. David was absolutely convinced he was a drugs cheat at that time. Lance suggested the interview. David put it to him straight up. “Lance, basically I only want to talk to you about doping, because unless I believe you there’s no

OCTOBEr 2015 //

// 19

david walsh vs lance point in going any further,” he said. “Unless I can believe you’re clean, there’s no point in talking.” Walsh then asked the Texan if he’d ever heard of the name Tommy Simpson? Simpson was a cyclist who’d had died from using drugs. Lance replied, “Well he never tested positive.” David was stunned. “It was well known that Simpson had used amphetamines but Lance’s big comment on his death was that ‘he never tested positive,’” he says. “And of course that was his mantra then, and was his mantra for the next 10 or 11 years. ‘I passed all the tests, and you have no right to go any further.’” Also in 2001 David confirmed a crucial connection between Lance and an Italian doctor, Michele Ferrari, who was under investigation for supplying performance-enhancing drugs to cyclists. His big breakthrough though was in persuading Lance’s soigneur/ masseuse, Tallaght woman Emma O’Reilly, to tell what she knew. Her accusations were the centrepiece of L.A. Confidential, written with a French sports journalist, Pierre Ballester, in 2004. Even though the book was published in France, it fell foul of English libel laws. Instead, David wrote an 11,000word article based on it for The Sunday Times which cost the paper £600,000 when Lance successfully sued for what was a diluted piece of journalism. “He perjured himself in that case and he perjured himself in the SEI case,” says David. “I was so engaged in this battle

I think the merit of the film is that the portrait is a very nuanced one, people have said to me that they came to the film with a sneaking regard for Lance 20 // #intallaght / TWEET US

with him that it didn’t bother me that he’d committed perjury because I just thought, ‘he has to say what he has to say’ but now that we’ve had some degree of closure I look back and think perjury is not a minor thing, people go to jail for perjuring themselves and Lance did it and at the time I thought that was normal, that’s what I expected him to do.” Lance and the libel laws, is a subject that really gets the mild mannered David’s blood up. “The biggest effect of the libel laws was that it gave journalists who didn’t have that much stomach for the investigation of unmasking the truth an excuse,” he says. “Because the libel laws were choking them. They were terrible. I quoted Emma O’Reilly so many times that she used to say ‘I can tell the truth in France, I can tell the truth in America but I can’t tell it in the UK where I am a citizen.’”

BIOPIC BIAS

Many people will come away from the movie thinking Lance has been portrayed rather sympathetically. David doesn’t agree. “No I don’t think he was painted too sympathetically” he says. “I think the merit of the film is that the portrait is a very nuanced one, people have said to me that they came to the film with a sneaking regard for Lance, ‘I’ve seen the movie and my regard for him has actually gone up not down.’ Other people watch this film and they see a very dark character, a guy who is part sociopath and I think your reaction to the movie is your entitlement, you interpret it as you see fit. There’s a scene in the film that I absolutely love, the one where the woman comes with the book to be signed and tells Lance ‘I had cancer and

gave up, then read the book and you made me change my mind and fight.’ He can’t engage with her, he can’t say anything back and she then implores him, ‘you are the messiah, the hero’, and at this moment you can see he’s having a problem and he’s thinking ‘I have committed the biggest deception on people that anybody could. I’ve set myself up as giving them great hope in their darkest moment when actually I’m a fraud’. And I thought that was a fantastic scene. The director wanted it taken out but I insisted it stay in. I wanted people to see, he wasn’t just one colour that was dark, he was very charismatic and there were shards of light in there amongst the darkness.” Finally what of Lance Armstrong now, how does he fill his days? According to David he “struggles with irrelevance because in a way he’s become irrelevant.” He was always the centre of the conversation and he was always a man around whom everything revolved and now “he’s in a country where people are feeling animosity towards him because he outraged us by what he did, he betrayed Americans,” he says. “They defended him, they loved him, they stood by him. They said ‘it’s the French, it’s that stupid journalist, it’s this, it’s that, it was never Lance who was the problem’. Then it turns out that they were wrong and they felt betrayed. He’s having a tough time living in a country amongst people who feel betrayed and they’re not inclined to forgive him. He’s become much less relevant than he once was and he is struggling with that.”

The Program is out in cinemas nationwide now.

Invincible Vogue

InTallaght caught up with Vogue Williams last week as she arrived at The Square Tallaght to officially open their latest new store Regatta, which specialises in outdoor leisure. by RACHEL LYNCh @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

Vogue was chosen to represent Regatta due to her time on ITV’s celebrity reality show Bear Grylls: Mission Survive, set in the Costa Rican jungle.

To many people’s surprise she went on to win the show after she was chosen over fellow finalists Kelly Holmes and Mike Tindall. In announcing his reasons for picking her, Bear commented: “Vogue, at the start I saw this girl who was almost scared of her own shadow. But your confidence has changed before my eyes. You’re smart, hard-working, mentally and physically, you have a

The worst part of it was definitely drinking my own p*ss, I can’t describe how bad it was. It’s not just because it was wee, it was just honestly disgusting 22 // #intallaght / TWEET US

resilience which has been inspiring to see. You’ve come a long way and I’m proud of you beyond words.” The 12-day mission saw Vogue tackle some of her worst fears. The celebrities were tested on fundamental principles of survival, and had to navigate through some of the most difficult terrains known to man.

CRUSHING EXPECTATIONS

Vogue spoke to us about her experience in the jungle and why she was surprised so many had such little faith in her at the start ,“I think they were looking for the real girly-girl to be honest and I don’t think I did my job too well. I was quite squeamish with the insects and stuff because they are just terrifying. The whole crew and the cast had me pegged to go first, I was never really that bad at it, I had other people pegged to leave before me.” Vogue told us how she loved the show and the group of people she met

while participating saying she “made loads of really great friends”. Although there were some moments of the experience she would wish to forget, the worst part of it “was definitely drinking my own p*ss, I can’t describe how bad it was. It’s not just because it was wee, it was just honestly disgusting. Nobody else seemed to struggle as much as I did.” The show is very much real and the challenges were as tough as they looked on camera according to Vogue. “We were never told what we were doing until about 30 seconds before we were doing it, so that was quite fun doing different things everyday.” Bear Grylls; Mission Survive is on another level to other reality shows out there too. “Our show was full on, I mean Tom woke up with a scorpion in his shoe one day, you had to be really careful, there were snake charmers going around all night because they have really poisonous snakes over there

so it was crazy”. So what about the main man of the show Bear? Vogue says he was an absolute pleasure to work with. “He is a lovely guy, really shy and a real family guy. He’s a superstar all over the world and you tag him as that, if you didn’t know him you would never know what he did, he’s just normal and down to earth. He did all the stuff with us, all the tasks and he didn’t have to do it because that isn’t what the program is about, but he did it anyway because he just loves it.”

REALITY BITES

On the topic of reality TV Vogue certainly won’t rule out appearing on our screens again. “I’m quite open to it because if you are learning something new and getting to do something you will never get to do again then why would you ever say no? It’s the same with when I did Dancing with the Stars, it was really difficult but I’ll never get to do that again”. Although she loves watching reality TV Vogue doesn’t feel like Celebrity Big Brother would be her cup of tea. “I don’t think I could handle that, especially with people like Farrah, she’s just a hideous person. You never know how you are going to come across.” You would think having not just taken part in Mission Survive but winning it Vogue would find shows like I’m A Celebrity a simple challenge, but that’s not the case. “I think I would struggle with I’m A Celebrity,” she says, “because it has got so much to do with bugs and I think that all my good work on Mission Survive would just go to waste if I did I’m A Celebrity because I would find it so hard.” Now the jungle experience is behind her it’s time for Vogue to take on a new challenge and that’s going to be a new series with RTÉ 2 called Mean Girls. The series has a number of episodes which focus on some interesting topics and is set to hit our screens on November 23rd. The first one is all about sex she tells us. “It’s really funny, but really eyeopening as well. I was watching it last night doing voiceovers and I was like

there is absolutely no way my parents can watch this. Then there is one on girl fighters which is really interesting and then one on women in the American prison system.”

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

Vogue has thrown her hand to a lot over the last couple of years with modelling and her regular stint as a DJ, we asked was there anything else she would like to undertake this year? She says, “More TV, I just love working in TV. I’m going in to talk to RTÉ next week. They have really good people in there that you can

talk through ideas. They are changing the whole channel and it’s great that they are so into making Irish TV and pushing Irish talent”. Vogue who has travelled the world is still at present living in London. “I came back on Wednesday and I’m half and half, I have my apartment over here so I come back here and I stay there. I like going back to London, it’s sort of where I live”. Many of us have seen Vogue plastered all over the media over the last few months following her split with former Westlife member Brian McFadden. The couple married in

It’s not all back on, we are just good friends. I talk to him almost every day, I was talking to him this morning… it’s very amicable Florence in 2012 but in July of this year the pair announced they had separated. Over the last few weeks media outlets had reported that the pair were leaning toward a reconciliation but Vogue told us that simply isn’t true. “It’s not all back on, we are just good friends. I talk to him almost every day, I was talking to him this morning, I am moving out though on Saturday, it’s very amicable. We did a lot together and as well his kids are involved and I mean I love the girls and that’s why even though we have our private lives public there are certain things we just keep to ourselves for their sake as well.” Vogue explains how she just has to accept how the media are a part of her life, but thankfully they haven’t been too bad. “Some of the things I read are true and some aren’t true and I do wonder where they get each one from. It doesn’t bother me because the media haven’t been overly intrusive and they haven’t been really vicious or nasty, it’s a give and take thing in this industry and I’m quite happy with that. I don’t think it has turned out for us too badly media wise.” Finally Vogue tells us that it’s all go for her over the next few months. “I have loads of dj-ing and modelling, I’m doing my radio show and my newspaper column and bits and bobs in the TV, but I can’t talk about that yet.” Whatever Vogue does next, if she puts half as much effort in as doing Mission Survive, it’ll be a success for sure.

The Vision of VISIT

With homelessness hitting high levels, one local volunteer group VISIT are doing their best to combat it, one person at a time. by PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

Figures released by the Department of the Environment last month showed that the number of homeless families nationwide has risen significantly since the start of the year.

Around 400 families were homeless in Ireland in January and by August that figure had risen to just over 700, up 76% in only eight months. The vast majority of these homeless families are in the Dublin region and more than half of them are living in hotel accommodation. For the ones who can’t get anything sorted the only option is to sleep rough. Here in this community a group of local people are doing their best to help alleviate the hardship for the homeless. Formed a year ago, VISIT (Voluntary Independent Service in Tallaght) provide meals, warm clothes, sleeping bags and support to Tallaght’s homeless. We met up with them last month as they went about their work in the car park of the Priory to find out more about the wonderful service they provide to those less fortunate. Last October local woman Nicola Moore and her mother Kathy noticed there were a number of people sleeping

26 // #intallaght / TWEET US

rough in the Priory. They decided to come back the next day, a Thursday, with some food and warm blankets from their own homes. When they returned however there was nobody there. It was the same the following day. So they drove around all day Saturday and Sunday until they found people in need of help. “We then started going out seven nights a week because there were really big numbers of people sleeping in Gallaher’s factory on the Greenhills Road,” says Nicola. “That’s how VISIT started really and now one year on we’re feeding between 15 and 18 people four nights a week. The weather determines the numbers sometimes. We also distribute sleeping bags, blankets, gloves, whatever we can really and provide information and support on how to access services.” Nicola says she has seen a definite increase in the amount of homeless

Everything we do is made possible by volunteers, fundraising and community donations. I have to say the Tallaght community are so great, I can’t say enough good things about them

people in the area in the last 12 months. “There’s 27 of us involved at the minute, we’re down four nights a week Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 7pm to 8pm and on Tuesday we do a food drop off service. The numbers are getting bigger. We have a family here tonight with three kids, it’s strictly a homeless service, strictly one-night only beds,” she said. Everything that VISIT provide comes strictly from donations. They don’t fundraise for themselves and they don’t receive any funding. “Everything we do is made possible by volunteers, fundraising and community donations,” Nicola said. “I have to say the Tallaght community are so great, I can’t say enough good things about them. It’s so easy to acquire anything we might need, they’re always willing to help. Tallaght is a working class community, people don’t have loads of money but they still donate. St Joseph’s school in Balrothery regularly donate two or three times a week, they’re just fantastic. The takeaways around the village are brilliant as well, they donate food on different nights. It shows you what a community can do when it comes together.” Nicola feels one of the main misconceptions the public have of homeless people is that they all suffer from addictions. “The stigma that homeless people are all addicts is way off the mark. I can point out nearly all

the people here tonight don’t have an addiction problem. That stereotype is not accurate. We’ve had people who are homeless but also holding down part time jobs,” she said. The people she helps tell her they feel let down by the state. “As far as I’ve been told by the people using this service nobody is doing enough for them. Other services they can’t access, they feel like the stigma still exists towards them. We have had a good few service users over the last four or five months move into hostels but it’s a slow process. The bureaucracy is a huge problem. There’s a rough sleeper team in the city centre where if they come across anyone sleeping they ring a number but getting an answer is impossible. The system doesn’t work, there’s people being passed from pillar to post. They have this expression ‘self accommodate’. I never heard the likes of it until I sat down for three hours yesterday with a family who had to “self accommodate.” They were given a list and have to ring around hotels. I rang around and what I noticed is once they heard it was a family they’d say ‘oh sorry, we’re full.’ Or they’ll say they won’t take a payment on the card. You can see how that system doesn’t work. This situation is getting worse.” Local Councillor Dermot Richardson was also present on the night we attended. He feels VISIT should be getting help from the state. “I

The stigma that homeless people are all addicts is way off the mark... That stereotype is not accurate think the biggest thing that VISIT will be looking for is a full time premises over the next few weeks so we would call on businesses to support VISIT,” he said. “We hope South Dublin County Council will come on board and give them a premises, not for an hour in the evening, but a full time premises because VISIT are providing a service for SDCC that other service users are getting paid for. VISIT are doing it from the heart whereas other organisations are getting well paid for it. You see the crowd that’s here tonight, that’s what it’s like most nights. There’s a different type of homelessness now, it’s people who through no fault of their own are ending up on the streets for reasons like their rent is too high or their landlord says he’s selling. They’re not selling, they’re getting people out so they can put up the rent. The Government has to bring in legislation to cap the rents.” Nicola says that VISIT will soon be looking for more volunteers and anyone thinking of getting involved, or is interested in fundraising for VISIT, please visit their Facebook page or contact by phone: 085 788 5945.

Community Champion We were thrilled to award this month’s Community Champion Award to Tara de Buitlear, who has given so much of her time to the local community in recent years. Tara works with the Tallaght Community Council (TCC) who run Tallaght Person of the Year and Tallafest, which is always an event to look forward to in the summer. Tara very modestly accepted the award and insisted that she wasn’t deserving of it, yet her humbleness is all the more reason to give it to her. This is also Tara’s final year with the TCC so we couldn’t let her leave

without highlighting her input to the community. Congratulations to Tara, we thank you for your commitment to the local community and think you are very deserving of this award.

PARTY SEASON by rachel lynch

________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

So with just over two months until Christmas we here at The Square know just how important it is to be ready for those Christmas parties coming up soon. It’s the most festive time of the year so a little black dress is obviously a must have but we also have a few other suggestions for you from DV8 and Elle, both located here on Level 1. Some of you ladies just aren’t comfortable in a dress so we have another option, how about a beautiful jump suit? If you love a bodycon dress we have that option also here at the centre. It’s all about your comfort and what suits you best. Remember you are out with your work crew for your Christmas

party so if you are comfortable with a dress over the knee then go for it but if you are looking for something a little more reserved then there are plenty of other options to go for too. Your choice of outfit will also depend on the type of venue your party is being held in, are you going for a meal or are you heading out for a few drinks with the team? Either way it’s important to know.

Featuring

DV8 Elle Hair

Makeup and hair also will depend on what type of outfit you choose. We went with a smokey eye for both our models Shauna and Layla from Bare Minerals, with a red lip on Shauna and a more subtle look on Layla.

Peter Mark

The models both went for a bouncy curl from Peter Mark on Level 1, which was altered throughout the shoot to ponies and upstyles that suited all three different looks perfectly.

Crimson Peak by RACHEL LYNCh @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

___________________________ Another horror this month but this one really is in a league of its own.

you will jump and have to cover your eyes right throughout watching it, but the plot isn’t as expected 42 // #intallaght / TWEET US

Right of course Crimson Peak has the usual monsters that are disgusting to look at, but this film had a great plot which mixed horror with suspense along with some of the most stunning surroundings and costumes. Edith (Mia Wasikowska – Alice in Wonderland) meets and marries the man of her dreams, the charming Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston – Thor). It isn’t long before the newlyweds are living together in his remote gothic mansion in the English Hills, but they aren’t alone as Thomas’ sister also lives with them. It doesn’t take long for Edith to realise that all is not what it seems in her new home. The family have plenty of dark secrets they don’t want for Edith to uncover, but as the story develops it’s clear that it’s not just the haunted home she needs to be wary of but the people inside it. Crimson Peak takes us to another level of horror – don’t get me wrong, you will jump and have to cover your eyes right throughout watching it, but the plot isn’t as expected. Yes you have the ghosts and monsters but you also have a real life story of love and deceit which at times allows you to forget it’s a horror film altogether!

PAN by genna patterson

__________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

While visually spectacular and fantastical, Pan didn’t wow me the way I was hoping.

Considering Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine in X-Men and Jean Valjean in Les Miserables with such aplomb, I was expecting a seriously nasty villain when he portrayed Captain Blackbeard in this movie, but unfortunately he is only just okay. Of course he is dressed the part and does mean things, but he is no sneering baddy like Dustin Hoffman in 1999’s Hook. The film tells the story of 12-year-old Peter Pan, kidnapped by Blackbeard’s pirates from an orphanage during World War II and brought to NeverNever Land to work with other boys mining fairy dust. Blackbeard uses the dust or ‘pixom’ to retain his youth and yet contradictorily hunts and makes fairies extinct. The fact that he relies on them for his youth makes no sense at all that he would want to kill them off! Also, the idea to use a modern Nirvana song as a workers’

chant seems to be stolen from the much better Mad Max: Fury Road. Anyway, Peter turns out to be part of a prophecy that says he will lead the fairies and the natives in a war against Blackbeard. Along with his new friends Tiger Lily and James Hook (yes he is friends with Peter in this movie). The main downfall for me was that aside from the amazing majesty of the visuals like swooping ships and flying alligators, the dialogue was full of cheesy quips and tiresome one-liners. However, that kind of thing might be enjoyable for others! In particular Hook (Garrett Hedlund) seems to be trying to play his character like Indiana Jones. This is obviously only the first in a series of a new Pan franchise and hopefully they sort out the script for the next one.

The Program

by genna patterson @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

___________________ A slightly biased but brilliant version of the Lance Armstrong story.

The Program tells the story of the sporting disaster that was Lance Armstrong’s demise from seven-time Tour De France winner to disgraced athlete. Lance is played as an arrogant, egotistical man by the relatively unknown Ben Foster, and this movie is sure to make him a star. Foster even reportedly took performance-enhancing drugs while shooting the film to get into character. Also starring Chris O’Dowd as the journalist David Walsh who long suspected that Lance was doping, this movie is based on his book Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong and it paints quite a nasty picture of the cyclist. From a mediocre athlete when he first

44 // #intallaght / TWEET US

began racing in the Tour, Lance wants to be better and so approaches the ‘doping doctor’ Michele Ferrari who puts him on a program including dieting and taking Epo, a performance enhancing drug. Soon Lance is winning races and has his team also doping, with an extreme system to evade drug tests (including blood doping). However, as Walsh continues to investigate despite threats from Lance, a number of people come out of the woodwork to confess the truth, including his Irish physiotherapist. The Program is compelling viewing, even for someone who doesn’t have any interest in competitive sports. The actors’ performances are engaging and the footage of the races is so exciting that you find yourself rooting for the ‘bad’ guy! A fascinating picture of an athlete gone too far, even if it is a little biased.

The Intern by genna patterson

___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA

We all need a little help sometimes.

If only we all had Robert De Niro to help us. In The Intern, bright young career woman Jules (Anne Hathaway) does, but doesn’t want him to help. De Niro plays Ben, a 70 year-old widower who is looking to fill his days now that his wife has passed away. He discovers a Senior intern programme at Jules’ online fashion company and gets the job as Jules assistant. As Jules’ struggles to run a business, be a mother and a wife, Ben is there waiting to help although Jules rejects his efforts at first. However Ben soon makes himself indispensable quickly

and shows that old-time manners and courtesy can go a long way in a world where everything is available at the click of a button. The Intern may be slightly All-American cheesy, but it does highlight how far removed from chivalry and manners we have gone which is something that could really be rectified easily. With the movie being set in Brooklyn, home of the hipster where everyone wants to be ‘real’, this movie shows that going back to basics and actually being real is key to making for a better career, family and marriage. A really sweet movie that made me want De Niro as my own intern!

An Irish production that is as good as any of the other horrors I have seen this year.

As a huge fan of horror I must say that I wasn’t too swayed by The Hallow trailer – as an Irish/British production with a cast full of unknowns it could have been a hit or a miss, although taking everything into account it was pretty decent. The story tells of a young married couple Adam and Clare who have relocated to a remote countryside in Ireland with their new baby Finn. As soon as they arrive to their new village they are warned by the community about their new home and the woods it is located right next to. As you have guessed it doesn’t take long for the family to experience the

presence of those nasty spirits that dwell just outside their home. Adam whose job requires him to study the woods sees him trek deeper and deeper each day unaware of the terror that is about to be unleashed on his family, due to his studies. This storyline will have you on edge in the last hour, although the story takes awhile to really get going at the start. However, once the spirits start appearing you will really want to sleep with the light on for the next few nights. If films like The Amityville Horror are your thing then this is a must see for you.

Possibly the weirdest (yet brilliant) movie out this year.

The Lobster is a strange entity to say the least. Forget your traditional love story, this is love in a world gone mad with coupledom. In a fictional world, not far from George Orwell’s imaginings in 1984, people legally must be in a couple, or face being interned in a ‘love hotel’ to find a match. If they fail to get a match after 45 days however, they are sentenced to be turned into an animal of their choice. Yes, I told you it was weird. David (Colin Farrell) is a suddenly divorced man sent to such a hotel, where he must endure a series of distressing and humiliating rituals and punishments if he does not find a new mate. That and hunt down ‘Loners’

who defy the law by living as single people in the woods. He befriends two other men played by John C Reilly and Ben Whishaw who are as desperate as he is to avoid an animal life, especially as it involves some sort of horrific surgery. Oddly enough, the premise of falling in love is based on having something in common, so David takes a leaf out his friend’s book and fakes a similarity (in this case sociopathy) in order to make a match. When that inevitably fails, he joins the loners, where ironically he falls in love in the one place it is forbidden to couple up. The Lobster may be a strange movie, but it is a very clever and funny look at the extremes of making a match. I only deducted a star rating because of some really disgusting violence, which unfortunately drives home the horror that is their world.

Adele leaks new music for first time in four years by genna patterson ________________________ Sundance TV to fund 1916 commemoration drama by Genna patterson ____________________________ Robert Redford’s Sundance TV has partnered with RTÉ to make a 1916 commemoration drama called Rebellion. As part of the deal the five part series will be screened in the US as Sundance TV is part of the AMC Network. Rebellion stars Brian Gleeson, Charlie Murphy, Michelle Fairley, Ruth Bradley and Sarah Greene and is based around the 1916 Easter Rising and the families affected by the conflict. RTÉ said that they aim to “portray the reality of life for people who were caught up in the events of the 1916 Rising” and that the deal “gives us a great opportunity to present the best Irish talent to a wider audience.” Rebellion was written by Colin Teevan who also did the two part series Charlie about former Taoiseach Charles J Haughey and it will be directed by Finnish director Aku Louhimies. Singer-songwriter Adele has been teasing fans by releasing snippets of her new album. Adele has not released any new music in four years since her last album, 21. The new album, 25, is to be released in November and will follow the system of numerical titles, as her first album was called 19. Adele’s new music was shown on a commercial break on the UK’s The X-Factor video with a black screen with just the lyrics displayed. “Hello/It’s me/I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet. To go over everything/they say that time’s supposed to heal you/But I ain’t done much healing.”

Reportedly many other artists have delayed releasing their albums so as not to compete with Adele who sold over 30 million copies of her last album.

Gavin James hitched a lift back to Dublin from an unexpected guest By Kelly Evans ____________________________ Travelling in and out of Dublin day in, day out is a daily task for amazing singer/songwriter Gavin James. But he managed to get a lift home off a good friend that just so happened to be One Direction’s Irish sweetheart Niall Horan. Gavin James tweeted Niall to thank him for the lift home: “@ NiallOfficial! Cheers for the lift back to Dublin buddaaaaay! my head was TOO large for that plane…” Gavin, whose song The Book Of Love has just hit an incredible one million hits on YouTube, is taking over our playlists. The star opened up for Ed Sheeran back in July and stole the hearts of the crowd. He then toured

with the likes of Sam Smith and will embark on a US tour towards the end of the year. He released his compelling new video for 22, which was based on his experiences of being bullied during his school life, and Love/Hate actor Leroy Harris plays a young offender. Gavin said, ”This song really means a lot to me, I wrote it about my experience of bullying in school. Wishing pretty much that I was 22 and could be out of school and out of that time of my life.”

The Lighthouse cinema to host nine days of 90’s Horror Films by Genna patterson ____________________________ To get you all in the mood for Halloween, the Lighthouse cinema is hosting nine full days of 90’s Horror movies. The 90s was a significant time for change in the Horror movie genre, with ‘found footage’ movies being all the rage. Kicking off from Friday October 23rd, the cinema will be showing a weekend full of selected 90s vampire films in association with the Bram Stoker Festival showing From Dusk Till Dawn, Blade I & II, Buffy the Vampire

Slayer and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Following on from that the Lighthouse will also be showing Silence of the Lambs, The Blair Witch Project, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, Candyman and Hocus Pocus. Finally, the horror ends with a Scream-themed party on October 31st, starting with a screening of Scream I and II, then afterwards a party with ironically-named cocktails, games and 90s music. What’s not to like?!

Westlife songs used as torture?! by GENNA PATTERSON ________________________ Many Westlife fans will be dismayed to hear that the band’s music was reportedly used by the CIA to torture people. The song My Love in particular, was said to have been played sporadically alongside chunks of heavy metal music at extreme volumes. The American Civil Liberties filed a federal lawsuit against the CIA this month after three plaintiffs claimed that the music was used as a form of torture on them. One plaintiff claims the Westlife song was used on him as he was was a newlywed at the time, while another died in custody and his family are suing on his behalf. The 82-page law suit also includes claims of other torture methods like being kept in cells that were pitch black and smelled of rotting seaweed and being doused with ice cold water.

Here and Now is a really solid follow up album that has perhaps flown under the radar a little as it was released around the same time as The Strypes’ amazing second album Little Victories Ryan Sheridan Here and Now by colm o’muirí

___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

From busking on the streets of Dublin to releasing his platinum selling debut album The Day You Live Forever, the past few years have seen a steady increase in fame for Monaghan man Ryan Sheridan, and after releasing his second album Here and Now the rise is sure to continue. Following the hugely popular debut album with some great tracks such as Jigsaw, The Dreamer and Stand Up Tall it was always going to be a daunting task for Ryan Sheridan to follow such a successful debut with an even better sophomore album. Although Here and Now is not quite as good as The Day You Live Forever, it is still a fantastic listen. From the title track Here and Now to the final

48 // #intallaght / TWEET US

track World Apart you get what you have come to expect from a singer/ songwriter who knows what his audience wants. The opening strum of the guitar from the title track assures fans that what you loved about his first album will be what you are getting with the second. A Minute Changes Everything is a lively tune with a good beat that really comes alive in the chorus, and is followed by Superpower. This is perhaps the poorest song on the album and that is saying something as it isn’t a terrible song, and like a lot of the songs it has a very catchy chorus. However, with some of the other songs on the album which are much better, it is very forgettable and sounds a bit like Olly Murs, but don’t worry this is a low before a high on this album. I’m Alive is a lively sing-along song with energetic thumping guitars throughout, which is best enjoyed with the volume at the max to get the best out it. Following that he slows everything down with Someone Like You to allow you to catch your breath before turning up the volume again

with HearSay and another sure to be hit, Burn Down. This is our World is very similar in beat and rhythm to that of Jigsaw, which should really entertain the crowd at any of his future gigs. The album completely slows down with the last two songs Stay and World Apart, which leaves you wanting to hear more, and which hopefully we will get to hear more of from Ryan Sheridan, sooner rather than later. Here and Now is a really solid follow up album that has perhaps flown under the radar a little as it was released around the same time as The Strypes’ amazing second album Little Victories. Ryan Sheridan has produced another mighty outing with Here and Now which is an album full of catchy songs and energetic rhythmic guitars that will appeal to fans of Rodrigo Y Gabriela. Here and Now is out now and is available on CD, €9.99 in HMV and also to download through the iTunes store which will cost €8.99.

GAMEWEEK 10 Enya Echoes in The Rain by colm o’muirí

___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

Enya has a brand new album coming out on November 20th entitled Dark Sky Island, however prior to the release of the album she has recently released the title track from the album called Echoes in the Rain. Echoes in the Rain is the first single to be released by Enya since 2008’s Trains and Winter Rains from her album And Winter Came. Echoes in The Rain will sound familiar to Enya fans as the single bears a lot of resemblance to Enya’s 1988 breakthrough hit Orinoco Flow (Sail Away). This will be quite apparent from the opening beats of the song. The similarities between this song and Orinoco Flow do not end there as back on Enya’s 1988 album Watermark, Orinoco Flow was the very last song to be recorded for that album and it is the same this time around with Echoes. Both songs were also chosen as

the title track from their respective albums and I hope that Echoes in the Rain will go on to have as much success as Orinoco Flow, because this is a much better song. Echoes in the Rain is a beautiful, relaxing song and if the rest of the album is like this it will be another brilliant album from one of Ireland’s most reclusive singing sensations. The accompanying lyric video to the song adds to the experience and for fans of Enya it is well worth a watch for when you are listening to the song. The piano solo just over halfway through is a nice break from the constant beat that flows throughout and breaks up the song nicely before going back into another chorus, which in itself is very catchy and will have you humming it away for the rest of the day. Echoes in the Rain is out now to buy or download with the album Dark Sky Island coming in late November, which after listening to this track I cannot wait to hear.

iPhone 6s & iPhone 6s Plus by colm o’muirí

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

Apple recently released their latest batch of iPhones onto the Irish recently with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus going on sale.

Firstly, let’s look at the price and the amount of storage which you will receive from the iPhone 6S which comes with a 4.7-inch screen. The iPhone 6S comes in three different versions; the 16 GB version will set you back €759 with the 64GB phone jumping €110 to €869. Finally, the 128GB version of the iPhone 6S will empty your pockets to the tune of €979. The larger iPhone 6S Plus which has a 5.5-inch screen comes in three versions also. Prices for this version of the iPhone start at €869 for the 16 GB version and rises to €979 for the 16 GB version. The 128 GB version of the iPhone 6S Plus will cost you €1029 with all prices taken from the Apple Store. In comparison with the price of last year’s iPhone 6 they would have cost you €799, €899 and €999 respectively. That is a lot of money for a phone which, since its release has received criticism from its early adopters for overheating to the point at which they cannot touch the Home button, along with the fact that a lot of owners have complained about the phone shutting down for no apparent reason. However, for anyone who has purchased or will purchase the phone, iPhone users have come up with some ways of hopefully preventing it happening to you which can be easily found through Google. One of the main new features of the phone is the smart 3D touch technology which has impressed, with many users expecting Apple to grow and develop this feature over the coming months and years.

50 // #intallaght / TWEET US

The 3D touch is a great feature with it being able to distinguish between a light and a hard touch and this should help with accidentally favoriting a tweet on Twitter when you only meant to scroll through your timeline. Or because it is Ireland and we are getting into the rainy season, it could help distinguish between your fingers and the drops of rain which can confuse a phone.

Is it worth purchasing the latest update if you bought last year’s iPhone with those updates? Probably not The 6S Plus has a 5.5-inch full HD screen which makes it sharper and better than the iPhone 6s which has a screen resolution of 750. Although not a problem with the full HD on offer from the Plus, the 6S display comes under scrutiny with phones that are cheaper which can offer 1080p screens (four times the resolution). Some Samsung phones that are considerably cheaper offer full HD screens which, considering the price Apple expect consumers to pay for products is quite astonishing. Is it worth purchasing the latest update if you bought last year’s iPhone with those updates? Probably not. The phones are very similar to last year’s releases and with the price of this year’s phone you’re probably best served holding onto that iPhone for another year until they completely revamp the phone with the iPhone 7 expected to be released sometime in 2016.

Motorola Moto X Play & Moto X Style by colm o’muirí

___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

Motorola have released their latest phones recently and they are the Moto X Play and the Moto X Style phones.

The Moto X Play has the smaller screen of the two phones with a 5.5 inch 1080p full HD screen which is the same size as the iPhone 6 Plus, however the Moto X Play will cost you €389 in some retailers and as low as €349 in others. That could be to do with the different storage capabilities of the different versions of the phone with a 16 GB and 32 GB version of the phone going on sale in Ireland. The battery in the Moto X Play is said to give you a mixed usage with a maximum output of up to 48 hours. That coupled with the phones 21 MP back camera for those crystal clear photos with rapid focus and a colour adjusting flash is sure to please all selfie obsessed users of the phone, the phones front camera is a 5 MP camera. The Moto X Play has some brilliant components such as its waterproof feature, however although it is impressive it is not as good as the waterproofing on the Sony Xperia. Splashes of water should be fine however if you’re unlucky enough to drop it in the bath it probably won’t have much effect! The Moto X Style comes in three different versions the 16 GB, 32 GB and the 64 GB with a maximum capacity of up to 128 GB with a Micro SD Card. With no Irish prices at the time of writing, however in the UK they range between £339 and £399 respectively, which is €454.30 and €534.71 at the current exchange rate.

The Moto X Style is the larger of the two phones with a 5.7 inch TFT LCD screen. The battery on the X Style is less impressive than the Play with the phone being estimated to give you 10 hours of battery life from every 15 minutes of turbo charging. A normal charge of the phone will hopefully give you a full day out of it. The camera in the X Style is the exact same as the X Play with a 21 MP Camera in the back and a 5 MP camera built into the front of the phone. The video capture in the X Style is really impressive with a 1080p 60fps 4K video capture capability, the X Play has a less impressive but still a quality camera with a 1080 HD 30 fps video capturing capability built into it.

The X Play comes across as the more impressive of the two Motorola looks to have put out two very good options for anyone looking for a new mobile phone with the X Play coming across as the more impressive of the two. The €389 price tag is also an easier pill to swallow compared with the base price of the two iPhones coming in at €759 and €799.

Rise of the Tomb Raider looks to be a brilliant game and a fantastic addition to the Tomb Raider franchise Rise of the: Tomb Raider by colm o’muirí

___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

Rise of the Tomb Raider is an

upcoming action-adventure video game from developers Crystal Dynamics and published jointly by Microsoft and Square Enix. This will be the 11th main game in which you take control of the legendary Tomb Raider, Lara Croft. Rise is a sequel to 2013’s reboot of the franchise Tomb Raider. The game follows Lara as she is in a race against time against an organisation called Trinity which covered up the events of the previous game, and Lara’s encounter with the supernatural and the Yamatai. The game will have the scavenging feature which was really enjoyable in Tomb Raider. This is where the gamer is tasked with finding animals and plants in different environments throughout

52 // #intallaght / TWEET US

the game to upgrade Lara’s weapons and equipment as you progress through the adventure. New features have been added with a redesigned stealth and sneak attack system for the game. Showing the progression of the character Lara has become cleverer in the sequel with her using the environment to confuse enemies, being able to hide in bushes or trees, or to avoid combat altogether by climbing trees or traversing across roof tops. The weapon that I enjoyed most, the bow and arrow, returns and you will also be able to use multiple bows. Other weapons which will appear in the game will be the pistol and the climbing axe as well as new additions such as the hunting knife which can be used for melee or sneak attacks. Rise of the Tomb Raider looks to be a brilliant game and a fantastic addition to the Tomb Raider franchise. Xbox gamers are lucky to be able to get their hands on what looks a tremendous game way in advance of the rest. The game is set for release on November 11th on the Xbox One and

Xbox 360, with the game being a timed exclusive for the Microsoft systems. PlayStation owners need not worry as the game will be released at a later date in 2016 for the PS4. Rise of the Tomb Raider is €49.99 on Xbox 360 and €69.99 on the Xbox One in Gamestop and Smyths.

Need for Speed by colm o’muirí

__________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM

Need for Speed is an upcoming open world racing video game brought to you by developers Ghost games and is being published by both Electronic Arts (EA) and Microsoft Windows for the PS4 and Xbox One. This is the 21st major instalment in the long running franchise which dates back to 1994, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, which was released in 1998 is still my favourite instalment of the series. Need for Speed has been given a full reboot for this game with one of its main features and criticism from fans is that you will require an online connection to play the game. The game features a whole host of cars and manufacturers as you would expect and like Forza before it the cars look visually stunning. With everything from Honda, Dodge, BMW, Nissan, Ford, and Lamborghini present in the game, the modified world is well catered for. The personal customisation is another feature of Need for Speed with you being able to modify everything from the visual (the ride height), to the handling, performance upgrades

as well as the paint or wrap that your car will have. Performance upgrades are really important when racing and Need for Speed offers you an in-depth and immersive experience in this regard with you upgrading everything from your fuel system, cam shaft, ignition and that all important nitrous system to blow your competitors away. The game is set for release on November 5th on the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One with the Microsoft Windows version being delayed until 2016. The reason for the delay for the PC is to give an unlocked frame rate and to increase the visual quality of the game for PC gamers. Need for Speed will have two editions of the game, the standard and the deluxe edition. The deluxe edition will feature in game extras such as a VIP Icon, more wraps and upgrades and early access to the BMW M3. The standard edition will cost you €69.99 in Smyths and €74.99 in HMV and Gamestop. The deluxe edition is €79.99 through the PlayStation store for anyone who feels the Need for Speed.

Skoda Fabia MONTE CARLO by RACHEL LYNCH

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

Sometimes large SUV style cars just don’t suit everybody. They can be awkward to park, expensive to run and simply just too big for some. For customers out there many car companies have come up with a small sleek and stylish option and that is exactly what Skoda have done. The Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo, available at Charle Hurst at Usedirect in Kingswood may look small and compact on the outside but inside it’s rather spacious and has plenty of room for transporting a small family. This model is the perfect car for those looking to make a statement. The striking design of the Monte Carlo model is highlighted with black elements, including the 16” Italia black alloy wheels and eye-catching front grille and door mirrors. It also offers a stylish interior, which is simple but still on trend, plus there’s plenty of room for passengers and their luggage. So what about the drive? It’s smooth and although it is a small model your positioning on the road is similar of that of a much larger model. I was impressed with the smooth gear change and the handling on the road especially.

54 // #intallaght / TWEET US

This particular model is a 1.2 petrol with annual road tax of just €270. The price is perfect too at just €13,950. So why pick this Skoda Fabia? Well firstly is stylish and sporty and is excellent for city life. Young and single? This car will tick all the boxes too, there is enough room to transport around your friends but also plenty of space for storage too if you have a small young family. BOOK

AUTHOR OLIVER SACKS

on the move a life by Gwen Taylour

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGWEN

I first heard Oliver Sacks speak on one of my favourite podcasts which is called Radiolab. His distinctive accent and delivery made me prick up my ears every time I heard one of his quirkily scientific radio pieces featured on the podcast.

The hosts, who know both good science and interesting characters, obviously revered him for the breadth of his scientific knowledge and had a great fondness for him too. He was their friend as well as a contributor. Sadly he passed away at the end of August this year at the age of 80. It was this news that was my impetus for seeking out his recent autobiography On the Move A Life. He was obviously

58 // #intallaght / TWEET US

a very interesting person with an entertaining way with words, even when he was discussing complex scientific studies and theories, so I wanted to know a little bit more about his life. I’d never read the autobiography of a scientist before but I was very glad I made an exception. As the title suggests, Sacks spent a lot of his life moving first from England to the United States and then once there, around that continent. Despite seeming at first glance to be an English elder-statesman-like figure, there was a lot more to Oliver Sacks than you may have assumed. Not only was he as near a celebrity as one could get by being a scientist in the last century, but he was an avid motorcyclist, weightlifter, scubadiver and swimmer. He was also gay (Sacks first heard the word on a trip to Amsterdam in the mid-1950s), in a time that had not yet accepted homosexuality. His own mother called him “an abomination”, a fact that

he struggled with. His telling of his fumbling attempts at a very secret love life were really interesting from a more modern perspective. But I’m forgetting to discuss what he’s most known for! He wrote 13 books in all, ranging from travel journals to full on academic works. He felt that the brain was the “most incredible thing in the universe” and therefore important to study. He became widely known for writing best-selling case histories about his patients’ disorders, with some of his books adapted for film and stage. The only one of these that I’d heard about before reading the book was about a group of survivors of the 1920s sleepy sickness, encephalitis lethargica, who had been unable to move on their own for decades. These patients and his treatment of them were the basis of Sacks’ breakthrough book Awakenings, which was later made into a film starring Robin Williams. I intend to read several of his books now but I really enjoyed the insight given in On The Move about how he came to have the idea to write these books, the writing process and even the editing and critical reception. The book was only released this year so as he wrote it he knew he was dying of cancer. Sacks’s chatty and accessible delivery of anecdotes from his life, in a roughly chronological order make for very interesting reading. In the final chapters it does get a little too scientific for me to follow completely but all in all I really enjoyed this book. I’d definitely recommend it!

The Students’ Union is a representative body for the students on both a local and national level. A training day took place on Friday October 2nd for the committee members of the various clubs and societies at IT Tallaght. There are a wide range of clubs and societies within the college and it can be a great way to get involved in college life and meet other students from different courses and years. The training day was very successful and it helped further inform students about their role as a committee member. Olwen Carey is a 3rd year Accountancy student and Dublin Ladies Senior Footballer and she was recently nominated for an All Star. We are very proud of Olwen and we wish her the best of luck at the LGFA TG4 All Star Awards Ceremony on November 14th. The senior men’s GAA team beat the Royal College of Surgeons in their first game of the year and the men’s soccer team had a 3-0 victory over Mary Immaculate College Limerick.

62 // #intallaght / TWEET US

The ladies GAA team also began their league with a 5-15 to 6-11 win over the Royal College of Surgeons and the mens rugby team had a 71-14 victory over IT Sligo on the same day. We would like to congratulate all teams on their success and wish them, along with all the other clubs and societies in the college best wishes for the year ahead. It became evident during the Marriage Equality referendum in May 2015 that students not only care about voting but have an enormously strong voice as they played a decisive role in the result of the Marriage Referendum. To build on this huge, student voting block, Students’ Unions from all over the country devoted a day to registering students from their respective colleges. On Monday October 5th, we registered 335 students to vote in preparation for the upcoming General Election. This was in advance of the Union of Students in Ireland’s (USI) National Day of Action on October 6th, which saw over 10,000 students get registered to vote nationwide. On Thursday October 8th, we organised a tour to Leinster House for the students in the college. This enabled students to get a feel for how the Government go about their daily jobs and see where plans and proposals are discussed and agreed upon. We were offered this invitation by Senator Katherine Zappone who will

be running as an Independent in the upcoming election. We are currently in the process of recruiting the class reps for the coming year. Each class group within the college will select a representative to be the voice for their respective class group. We encourage all students to consider running for class rep during their time in college as it has many advantages. Being a class rep is a great experience for students CV’s. It also builds confidence and expands their network of skills. Other benefits of being a class rep include creating new friendships and it is also a great way to get involved within the college and the Students’ Union. Having a class rep

system in place allows the students to directly communicate with us in the Students’ Union and have their say about how they would like to see things done. The graduation ceremonies for all graduates in IT Tallaght will be taking place this year on November 4th and 5th. The Students’ Union team of Jessica the President, Aisling the Education Officer and Shauna the Welfare Officer are all graduating next month with a first class honours degree in Business Management. This is a very exciting time for all graduates of the various courses within the college and we are proud to celebrate this time alongside the other students.

Around 50,000 low-paid workers are set to receive a pay rise after new binding wage agreements for the contract cleaning and security sectors were signed into law. Previously under the Joint Labour Committee system both the employers and unions in a sector would agree on legally binding pay and conditions for employees in that particular sector. In 2011 however, the Supreme Court deemed the system was unconstitutional and following the decision new recruits only enjoyed the basic protections of the Minimum Wage and Working Time legislation. The Government has now reinstated the system with the required constitutional safeguards. From October 1st, the pay of around 30,000 contract cleaners is €9.75 an hour for the first 44 hours - up from €9.50 under the old JLC, and an increase of 2.6%.The first four hours

Minimum wage to rise to €9.15 per hour by genna patterson ____________________________ The Budget announcement for 2016 revealed that minimum wage per hour would rise from €8.65 to €9.15, which is nearly a 20% increase. Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin said that the increase along with the reduction of Universal

of overtime will be paid at time and a half, and subsequent overtime will be paid at double time. All hours on Sundays will be at double time. The 20,000 employees in the security sector will see their basic pay rate rise from €10.01 under the old system to €10.75 - an increase of 7.4%. All overtime over 48 hours will be at time-and-a-half. The new agreements will also deal with terms and conditions including annual leave and sick pay - and the wage increases for both sectors will be payable with immediate effect. The move comes as the new streamlined system of employment rights machinery centring on the Workplace Relations Commission and the Labour Court comes into being today. Social Charge shows the Government’s commitment to helping the low paid. The Government has been using the tag line “We want to make work pay”, particularly in the run up to the budget. The wage increase will be implemented from January 1st, 2016.

Lidl commits to living wage by genna patterson ____________________________ German retailer Lidl has become the first retailer in Ireland to commit to paying staff the living wage of €11.50 per hour. Ireland’s current minimum wage is €8.65 and so 20% or 700 of Lidl’s staff will benefit from the rise.

Lidl has 143 stores in the country and pointed out that the new rate is 30% higher than the current minimum wage. The living wage is an independently assessed and measured rate of pay that is deemed necessary to have a reasonable standard of living. John Paul Scally, Managing Director at Lidl Ireland said: “We are delighted to be the first major nationwide employer to champion the Living Wage in Ireland. Already 80% of our team earn in excess of the living wage, however it is important for us to ensure that those whose hourly pay falls below €11.50 benefit from a substantial increase. This would bring them to a level that is more reflective of enjoying a better standard of living.” Lidl will implement the rise in pay from November 1st.

Resignation of Billy Walsh by padraig conlon

____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

This month was one of contrasting emotions for all involved in Irish boxing.

From the high of winning gold at the World Championships then came the catastrophic low a few days later when the news emerged that highly rated head coach Billy Walsh had resigned from his post. The Wexford man, who has led Ireland’s boxers to an unbelievable haul of medals in the last decade, resigned from his position as Head Coach of the IABA’s Irish High Performance Unit and senior team. He had worked with the unit for the last 14 years and will now take on a similar role with the USA. Even though there had been speculation for months that the coach was leaving, there was a feeling that any issues between Walsh and the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) could be sorted out. Alas it was not to be and in a statement released on Monday 19th October Walsh confirmed the news most people in Irish boxing didn’t want to hear. In the statement he made it clear that he feels the IABA did not make it possible for him to continue in his role. Its key points were: “Since February of this year I have been engaged in a process with the IABA to secure my future as Head Coach with the High Performance Unit and senior team. A protracted process that went on for eight months included numerous high level meetings that resulted in various proposals. In August a fair proposal was developed under the auspices of the Irish Sports Council (ISC) that was acceptable and fair but then not subsequently ratified by IABA. “I was hopeful in recent weeks that a final proposal arising out of

66 // #intallaght

an approach in late September by the IABA would lead to a successful conclusion but unfortunately it didn’t. “Regrettably the IABA have not made it possible for me to continue on in the role as Head Coach of the High Performance Unit and senior team. “In starting out on this journey back in 2003 our ambition was centred on building a sustainable system for Irish Boxing and I think we have achieved that. This has been achieved with the work of many excellent people including our outstanding club coaches who produce the pipeline of talent for us in high performance to work with. “Our high performance coaching team contains some of the finest and hardworking coaches in the world, both those from international shores and homegrown. These coaches are part of the legacy of all the hard work it took to build this system.” Walsh had allegedly agreed a new contract which was drawn up by the Irish Sporting Council, who are responsible for funding Irish boxing. However, the IABA is understood to have rejected that contract and instead insisted that the coach sign a contract of their own which was not agreeable to Walsh. The IABA statement said that it accepted Walsh’s resignation “with regret” and that it did its “utmost to retain” his services. It read: “The IABA has been in discussions with Billy following his approach to the organisation to seek improved terms and conditions after he stated that he had received an offer from USA Boxing.

“The IABA is deeply disappointed not to retain his valued services, and for the avoidance of any doubt, the IABA has done its utmost to retain Billy Walsh as head coach. “However, Billy himself has made the decision to resign and take up a position with USA Boxing, and we wish him every success with this.” At the time of us going to press more details began to emerge highlighting some of the key issues that have led Walsh to quit. At a Dáil Committee to sign off on Kieran Mulvey’s appointment as chairman of Sport Ireland, Mulvey revealed that one of the demands from the Irish Amateur Boxing Association was that Walsh get permission from his CEO before engaging with the media. “In this proposed contract, Billy Walsh was told that he could not engage with the Olympic Council of Ireland, the Irish Sports Council or the media without the written permission of the CEO. Imagine Joe Schmidt being told he had to contact Philip Browne every time he wanted to announce a team. This is unconscionable,” Mulvey said. “What was Billy Walsh looking for? I think he was looking for respect. And my god did he deserve it. The second thing he was looking for was authority. Reasonable authority to run the High performance programme without petty bureaucratic interference. I mean, how can you have a situation in Doha where a boxer could win a medal then Billy having to turn to Des Cahill and say, ‘Sorry, I can’t give an interview, I have to get written permission.’

St. Annes Successes By Colm O’Muirí __________________________ Local Tallaght GAA club St Anne’s have been enjoying quite a bit of success on the pitch over the past few weeks. The club’s female footballers in both the U14 and U16 category have reached their respective finals with the dates for both matches yet to be confirmed. However, I am sure that all of you will join us in wishing the girls all the best for when they take to the field and hopefully bring their championships back to Tallaght. All of us here at InTallaght would also like to show our appreciation for the Senior men’s of St Anne’s who reached the quarter final stage in the Dublin Senior Football

Championship for the first time in 15 years. Unfortunately, they could not overcome their opposition, Clontarf who won on the day in Parnell Park with a winning margin of 19 points to St Anne’s 7. However, St Anne’s U12 Football team won their Division 5 league against Naomh Olaf, the boys put on a brilliant display and put together a resounding win with a final score of 5-11 to 2-5. The success for St Anne’s does not end there as there as U15 Boys reached the Shield Final by beating St Sylvester’s. The boys ran out winners by beating Sylvester’s 2-14 to 1-4, the date or venue has yet to be confirmed for the final but we wish the boys all the best for when they take the field in the final.

Pajo’s Return

Pajo’s Return by padraig conlon

Speaking afterwards about ____________________________ boxer Pajo Hyland had what he described Jobstown a successful return to the ring month in his first fight since as his “emotionally” this tragic death of his father and toughest fight, Pajo the trainer Patrick Snr in June. said his opponent also had very kind words for him. Boxing is a sport where we kill each other but have the greatest respect for each other. @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

On what was an emotionally charged night for the title chaser, Pajo showed true grit and class in his fight with David Martinez in Lowell, Massachusetts on Saturday October 10th. It was the very first time in his entire career, amateur or professional, that his father wasn’t in his corner for a fight and he put in an excellent performance to firmly establish his serious title credentials. With his sights fixed on the featherweight world title he took another step towards his target when he knocked Martinez out in the eighth, and final round with probably the greatest punch of his career so far. The knockout blow was delivered via a massive left hook that finished off his American opponent and left him dazed on the canvas. Seeing his stricken opponent sitting dejected in the ring Pajo then showed

outstanding sportsmanship as he went over and sat down next to Martinez offering him words of consolation and sharing a few tears. Speaking afterwards about what he described as his “emotionally” toughest fight, Pajo said his opponent also had very kind words for him. “As soon as the doctor sat him up I went over and sat down to see if he was OK”, Pajo said to the gathered media. “He told me my dad would be proud, I started to cry! Boxing is a sport where we kill each other but have the greatest respect for each other.” Pajo’s sportsmanship was well received by the crowd and something that everyone who was there will remember for ever. The win takes the 32-year-old’s record to 31(15)-1(0) and now the talk turns to planning his next big fight with rumours circulating it will be against Matchroom contender Josh Warrington. Pajo was one of three Irish winners on the same card that night. Clondalkin native Stephen Ormond knocked Michael Clark out in in the first round of his bout while his Celtic Warrior gym mate Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan prepared for his December showdown with Chris Eubank Jnr by stopping David Toribio in the second round.

intallaght player of the year: Brandon Miele

Even though at the time of going to print there are still a couple of games to play I’ve decided that Brandon Miele has already wrapped up the InTallaght Rover’s Player of The Year Award. by PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

Without a doubt he’s been The Hoops best performer throughout the campaign and it was notable that one of the highlights of the season for many fans was the news in September that he had signed for another year. He has made an excellent contribution to the team with 11 goals this term, 10 of which have been in the league. His tally makes him the highest scoring Rovers midfielder in the league since John Toal back in 1994. Some of them came on a great scoring streak in the middle of the season when he scored six in six appearances. The quality of most of those strikes was of the highest standard and notable goals include his 30 yard thunderbolt against Limerick at home, his last minute equaliser away to the same opponents to rescue a point and his fantastic last minute free kick against Bray in Tallaght. He has also provided plenty of goals and chances for his team mates, notably assisting his good pal Mikey Drennan

70 // #intallaght / TWEET US

on numerous occasions. He is one of those players that you’d pay money to watch and if he can build on this season he will be a formidable player for The Hoops next year. It’s great to see a local player shine for Rovers and Brookview native Brandon seems to be revelling in being home. After a tough last year at Newcastle United, when he was hampered with injury, he really seems to have found his way again. Speaking in September when he resigned he spoke of how content he is in himself at this moment in time. “I have probably been as happy as I’ve ever been playing football so I’m delighted to have signed up for next season. I hope the fans are happy as I certainly am,” he said. “Next year hopefully I can continue with what I’ve been doing this season and we can get stronger and challenge for the league.”

Remembering Pat Dunne by padraig conlon @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

____________________________ There was much sadness at Shamrock Rovers at the end of September when former goalkeeper Pat Dunne passed away after a short illness aged 72. Described as one of Irish sport’s great characters the Dubliner began his career as a schoolboy with Stella Maris before making the move cross channel to Everton. Following a couple of years on Merseyside he came home to Dublin and signed for The Hoops in the summer of 1962. In contrast with his spell with The Toffees he had an extremely successful two years with Rovers as he won the League of Ireland, FAI Cup, Shield, Leinster Senior Cup and Dublin City Cup all in the 1963-64 season. In May 1964 he signed for Manchester United for a fee of £10,500. Harry Gregg was United’s number one at the time but he was unavailable with injury so Dunne made his debut for United against (ironically enough!) Everton at Goodison Park on September 8th, 1964 in a 3-3 draw. Dunne went on to make 55 appearances for United that season, managing to make 17 clean sheets in 37 league matches, as United were crowned First Division Champions. Following his title success he made his debut for the Republic of Ireland on May 5th, 1965 in a 1-0 win against Spain at Dalymount Park in a 1966 World Cup Qualifier. He would go on to play another four games for Ireland with his last cap coming in a 2-1 home win against Turkey in a 1968 European Championship qualifier.

72 // #intallaght / TWEET US

After United he went to Plymouth Argyle and in his first season there he won their Player of The Year award in 1968. He would go on to play 152 times for Plymouth Argyle before returning to Rovers in 1970. He once again made headlines back home when he became the first player to receive a red card in Irish football when sent off against Shelbourne in November 1970. After eight years at Rovers he then became player manager at Thurles Town and Shelbourne. He also played for Clontarf Athletic in the UCL, winning League and Challenge Cup honours.

He retired as one of the very few players to have won league title medals in both Ireland and England. Pat Dunne is survived by his wife Bernie, sons Derrick and Greg, daughter-in-laws Sarah and Lorraine, and six grandchildren. The CEO of the Football Association of Ireland, John Delaney said: “Pat Dunne was a legendary figure to those who followed Irish football during the 1960s and 1970s and was part of the team that came so close to qualifying for the 1966 World Cup.” Pat was remembered before Ireland’s excellent home win against Germany in the Aviva Stadium this month.

Paddy moore has been described as second only to George Best as the greatest ever Irish footballer Unveiling of Rovers legend Paddy Moore’s headstone in Glasnevin by padraig conlon

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

____________________________ Paddy Moore was one of the greatest players to ever play for Shamrock Rovers.

On Saturday October 10th a headstone, which was part-funded by the Shamrock Rovers Heritage Trust and Rovers fans, was unveiled at his grave in Glasnevin Cemetery. The much-loved legend was born in Ballybough in 1909 and signed for The Hoops at 19 years of age in the summer of 1928. Paddy would play for Rovers during four different spells spanning almost the entire 1930’s. A prolific centre forward, he would become the first player ever to score four goals in

a World Cup match in 1934, win every honour in Irish club football, score the winning goal in the 1931 FAI Cup final and represent his country nine times. He also played in England, Wales and Scotland becoming a legend at Aberdeen where he equalled the club record for scoring a double hat trick in 1932. Had he been born 80 years later he would undoubtedly have been a multi millionaire and a back page tabloid star. He would also probably be making the front pages because along with his spellbinding talent he was a larger than life cult hero who was much loved by the public and a man who struggled with an alcohol addiction that would tragically claim his life at the age of 41. He has been described as second only to George Best as the greatest ever Irish footballer. After his career wound down in 1942, and following a short stint as manager at Stella Maris, he emigrated to England where he tragically died in 1951.
