HALLOWEEN can be a dangerous time for many with people choosing to erect illegal bonfires and set off fireworks.
Last year Dublin Fire Brigade and Ambulances service answered 727 emergency calls in a 12 hour period on Halloween night. This year it is hoped that that number will be reduced.
“It is a busy night for us and we ask people to take reasonable precautions where safety is concerned. Halloween should be an enjoyable night so just don’t do anything illegal and enjoy it for the night it’s supposed to be.”
The key to that, according to Gardai is putting the safety of you and others around you first. A spokesperson for the Gardai said: “At Halloween we advise people to steer clear of illegal bonfires and fireworks. It’s fairly common sense really, we just want people to enjoy themselves and not cause or get into trouble.”

Celebrating Diversity Massive Event Planned To Bring People Together HUNDREDS of performers are to come together in a spectacular showcase and celebration of cultural diversity this November. On Monday the 21st ‘Celebration’ an event to promote social inclusion through the performing arts, will take place in the Civic Theatre. Organised by South Dublin County Council the event will be a display of all the talent and creativity in the county with performances by everything from groups to single acts in ages ranging from 10 and upwards with a top prize promised for the best performance of the night. Maria Finn, Senior Staff Officer in the Social Inclusion Unit told InTallaght: “South Dublin County Council are proud of this dynamic event which will feature as the grand finale of the Social Inclusion Week which runs from November 7th -21st. “The week is about creating a society where everyone experiences full and equal participation in all aspects of life. It highlights and promotes the positive work of South Dublin County Council and the member agencies of South Dublin County Development Board to reduce social exclusion and poverty.
This is the first year that we’ve done this, in previous years we’ve done the T Factor but this year we felt that we wanted to open it up to everyone because what better way to celebrate diversity that something like this?” Performances on the night will include those from line dancers, singers, comedians, twirlers and culture groups. The event, which has a 5 euro entry fee, is not profit making and the show will begin at 8pm. Maria added: “Reaching everyone is our aim with this. We have acts coming from everywhere including a huge number from the West Tallaght area, others from disability groups and there’s even one group singing to sign language. “It is a great opportunity for people – it’s a community project that is set to be better than the X Factor!” For further information log onto http://socialinclusion.southdublin.ie
A HUGE success is how The Lucan Festival has been described after a great turnout to the week-long event at the end of September. Now in its third year the festival played host to a range of events from arts exhibitions to discussions and tea dances to cinema magic – all of which culminated in a fantastic family funday. Lucan Councillor Emer Higgins, who attended alongside presidential hopeful Gay Mitchell, congratulated the committee on what she described as an ‘exciting lineup and successful schedule of events. She told InLiffeyValley: “ The organising committee did a tremendous job in pulling this week-long event together and in raising the funds to make the festival possible. “The Lucan Festival is a great example of how volunteers from the area can create hugely successful, positive community events.” The Lucan festival is supported by South Dublin County Council, the CPLN and local businesses. “We Will Fight On For Bob’s Sake, For As Long As It Takes” Sinead and Terry Delany
Family Of Gun Victim Still Seeking Justice THE devastated family of a young Tallaght father who was shot in the face three years ago, have said they will not give up their fight until they get justice for him. On October 22nd 2008, Robert Delany, was shot by a vicious gunman who used pellets in his weapon in order to cause maximum damage when the dad of three looked out the upstairs window of his Russell Rise home. Today Robert remains in a vegetative state in Peamount Hospital where he was moved three months ago. Remembering the day it happened Robert’s sister Sinead told InTallaght: “We were told he wouldn’t survive the night and that they wouldn’t be sending him to Beaumont. The next night though, he was still here and my dad was talking to him while holding his hand when he mentioned something about Wayne Rooney and suddenly Bob squeezed it. That was the first sign that he was aware and then they decided to send him to Beaumont.” Robert spent the following few weeks in Beaumont where he underwent tests. He was set up in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and during his time there he had a shunt inserted into his head and bones taken out which allowed his brain to swell. From Beaumont, Bob was eventually moved back to Tallaght but it was when he was transferred to Dun Laoighre that things began to change. “Staff from Dun Laoighre came out to assess him to see how aware he was and they helped hugely. They got him a wheelchair and he started coming home for the day, several days a week, last July.” In August Robert celebrated his 30th birthday with all his family around and despite the fact that he is not able to talk the family believe that he knows what’s going on around him. Sinead said: “Bob is in a persistent vegetative 10
state, they call it the living dead. They think that he’s blind in both eyes and they don’t know if he can hear us but we go on the basis that he can. We speak to him as though he can hear and understand everything that we are saying.” The effect on Robert’s family has been huge, according to his sister. From his parents to his children Megan, who is now 9 and Katie who is 4. Sinead said: “We have mixed feelings about it. There are days you want him here and days you think it’s not fair. It is scary that he is locked in there. There are certain times too that it really gets to you, like Christmas morning. I know the people who did this are waking up with their kids; that they are allowed that freedom is really awful it’s unbearable really.” Peamount Hospital is where Robert will now remain for the rest of his life. His family are allowed to visit whenever they want and he returns home regularly. Sinead said: “That was tough The last move and that will be his home now for however long.” There has been much speculation around Robert’s attack but it is believed that he was targeted after intervening in a fight days beforehand. His father Terry said: “Bob would hate to see anyone in trouble. Basically he helped a guy he knew because he was in trouble but he got the backlash.” Just a couple of months after Robert’s attack the family set up ‘The Justice for Robert Delany’ campaign and a 20 thousand euro reward remains on offer to anyone with information leading to the arrest of his assailants. Terry said “We had a meeting with the Minister for Justice recently and he expressed his full support for our campaign. He also gave us his assurance that the investigation is ongoing. “It’s public knowledge who organized it and public knowledge who carried it out
but we need people to come forward with the missing pieces of what is, effectively, a jigsaw puzzle to enable the Gardai to put them behind bars. It’s the only way we will get justice.” Sinead added: “The fact is; if this is what happened to us – who knows who is next? We never had any trouble as a family, Bob was completely innocent yet this came to his door.” As part of the campaign the family recently met with the Tanaiste, Eamonn Gilmore, who said he was “in awe of the campaign,” and TDs Gerry Adams, Pat Rabbitte, Brian Hayes and Sean Crowe have also expressed their support. Terry added: “There has been support, in fairness right across the political divide and we are hopeful that with these men in government our campaign will be strengthened and we will finally get justice for Bob.” For more information on the campaign log onto www.innocentvictimsofviolence.ie or anyone with information is asked to call 087 2254435 confidentially.
“We’re Busy Living Not Dying” Two Women Talk About Their Battles With Cancer LIVING with breast cancer is something that thousands of women across the country have to face up to every year. Two such women, Maria Foran (Below Left) and Marie Reck (Below Right With Daughter Katie), who are doing exactly that, spoke to InTallaght during Breast Cancer Awareness month about their battle with the disease and the effect it has had on their lives as they knew them. Maria, 47, from Old Bawn, was diagnosed in 2001 with Advanced Breast Cancer. It was in both breasts, her bones and her brain as well as a small portion in the liver. She said: “The doctor told me that as young as I was there was nothing he could do so he referred me to St Vincent’s and I remained in treatment there for a good few years. I started with brain radiation and I moved on very successfully to a Chemo tablet. Last year though everything started to go wrong. I became immune to the tablet. I had fluid on my lungs after that and I had to spend a month in Vincent’s. I haven’t been well since.” A member of the Tallaght Cancer Support Group, Maria started to attend meetings, which take place twice a month, a n d
found that talking about her illness with those who knew exactly what she was going through made a huge difference. She said: “I’ve been coming here for about four years. I find it very very good. It has definitely helped a lot of people along the way. I feel like I’m more inclined to be able to talk to other people with Cancer too. You feel you have a common ground.” Maria’s Cancer is being treated at the moment with a new Chemo tablet but is finding that because of all her past treatments her liver is suffering. She said: “I’m not in a lot of pain, I’ve never had a headache and I am scanned every three months religiously. “My husband Sean has been an absolute tower of strength. I don’t think that I’d be here without him. If I am down he’ll drag me back up again. My girls are great too. The last six months have been very hard but I have to keep the head up.” Anger is not something that Maria allows herself preferring instead to appreciate what she has. She said: “I’m not angry. I feel very lucky that no matter what happens to me I am after getting ten years with my kids that I thought I’d never get. At the end of the day I’m living with Cancer not dying of Cancer.”
determination not to let Cancer ruin her life is the same. “I was very angry when it happened to me,” Marie 44, told InTallaght. “Instead of dwelling on it though I got busy living – not dying.” After being diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2009 Marie, from Aylesbury, found out that the lump had spread to the Lymph nodes. She had a lumpectomy and got auxiliary clearance which meant that they had rid the lymph nodes of Cancer. She then had to have a full mastectomy on the left hand side followed by three months of Chemo and five weeks of Radiotherapy. She said: “I got a wig and was devastated. It felt horrible and I just felt that it took away my self-image and dignity. I have recently had a breast reconstruction though and it has helped me no end. “Having Cancer has made me appreciate the smaller things in life. It makes you realize the stupid things people complain about like the rain and money because when something like this happens you see that once you have your health nothing else compares. These days I go for regular check-ups and I’m back on my feet, moving onwards and upwards.”
For Maire Reck, the process has taken a different path but the
• A lump or thickening which is different to the rest of the breast tissue • Continuous pain in one part of the breast or armpit • One breast becomes larger or lower • A nipple becomes inverted or changes shape or position
• Skin changes including puckering or dimpling • Swelling under the armpit or around the collarbone • A rash on or around the nipple • Discharge from one or both nipples

THE family of a determined little girl, unable to walk due to Cerebral Palsy, are on track to raising the €50,000 they need to take her to America for a life-changing operation. Caoimhe Duffy, who is just five-yearsold, will travel to America in January to have the procedure on her spine, called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), which her father Feargal hopes will finally help her realise her dream of walking. Feargal told InTallaght: “Caoimhe was born 11 weeks premature and spent the first six weeks of her life in the Intensive Care Unit in The Rotunda. She had bleeding on the brain which meant she effectively had two strokes and we were left with no idea how she might be affected by them. “We eventually got her home only to send her back in six weeks later for heart surgery. She also had problems with her lungs which a lot of premature babies have but everything was fixed and it wasn’t until she was one that we found out she had Cerebral Palsy.” Caoimhe never crawled as a baby and her parents suspected that it was all the time she spent in hospital beds which deterred her from trying.
12
Feargal said: “She didn’t crawl and she didn’t sit up, it was very difficult. It was like having a newborn baby all of the time but then we found out and we were referred to the Central Remedial Clinic where they were absolutely brilliant. “It was a steep learning curve. We didn’t know anyone with Cerebral Palsy at the time but we kept the appointments up and kept going.” Caoimhe is just like any other little girl, she attends mainstream school and is the brightest girl in her class according to her father. Her Cerebral Palsy affects her legs in that they are totally rigid suffering from a severe lack of elasticity which means that she gets very tired, even walking with the support of her walking frame, within minutes. She uses her wheelchair, therefore, to go almost everywhere and without surgery, she has been told, that by the age of 10 she will be permanently wheelchair bound for the rest of her life. There is hope however, in the form of the SDR surgery which has been carried out in the United States for the past 20 years. The operation will see certain nerves in Caoimhe’s spine,
which are sending the signals to her legs, severed. This will eliminate the tightness and with the correct physio, Caoimhe will learn to walk. Feargal said: “It has never, and will never, be carried out in Ireland but we now know someone who has had it done and her progress has been phenomenal over the past year. We have to get the surgery to give Caoimhe a proper chance. It will be very tough for her, it’s not like she has to learn to walk again, she has to learn how to walk full stop – before she’s ever even crawled. “She is so determined though, she is the perfect candidate for this. All she has ever wanted to do is walk. The best proof of that was this year when we brought her to her school sports day. We weren’t going to as we thought it would be really hard on her but she insisted and when we got there she then insisted on taking part on the 100m race – with her walking aid. She crossed the finish line to great applause and we couldn’t have been more proud.” Just recently Feargal and his wife Linda have been given January 31st next year as the date they will fly out to America with their daughter for the surgery. Over the past year they have been fundraising in an attempt to meet the €50,000 required and last week they came one step closer with an event held in La Banca restaurant. The event was hosted by kind-hearted owners Keith and Melanie Kenny who donated their premises for the night, organised celebrity chef Derry Clarke for a cook off, the local fishmonger to supply his food free of charge, a donation of 45 bottles of wine and Lir Chocolates to supply free goody bags for all of the guests. The couple’s staff also work for free on the night.
“It was phenomenal and we are so grateful. “We have been out fundraising since last June and it has been very hard work with rattling buckets for hours on end. This was something else though and we raised 2530. We couldn’t believe even the staff worked for free, that was amazing.” Caoimhe’s journey will begin in the US in February but she will return 4/5 weeks later to see out the rest of it with her parents and her older brother Finian (8). That’s when the real work will start for Caoimhe’s dream of walking to become a reality and who knows, with determination of her kind she might even get to leave the walking frame behind for the next 100 metres. I’ve learned this just recently after a terrifying morning at a stunt school where I played cat and mouse, dodged in and out of cones at high speed and in general discovered the meaning of the word adrenalin. It’s a Saturday morning, windy and very cold as I stand in a deserted yard in Arklow amid derelict buildings and the smell of burning rubber. I shiver madly in the fluorescent jacket I’ve been supplied. My stomach is churning and I’m a bag of nerves watching brothers Brendan and Tony Condren from Tallaght chasing each other around the track in old cars. As they zip in and out through cones, pass each other out, do 180 degree turns and eventually park alongside each other with inches to spare I wonder what possessed me to come down here and risk life and limb – literally. Brendan Condren Stunts was set up by the man himself and through the business he runs stunt training and examinations approximately four times a year as well as working on film sets with his brother Tony and supplying stunt artists to various production companies. The
stunt weekends are used to train new stunt men and women as well as acting as a platform for current stunt artists to brush up on their skills for upcoming film work. One such stunt man is Tallaght Native and Kick-boxing champion Norman Kelly who has been in the business for over 20 years. Norman’s specialty is martial arts but he is also an expert in fight scenes, driving and water stunts. He has worked with Brendan and Tony regularly over the years and between them they have built up quite a CV within the film industry. Along with the men and women gathered today their repertoire of shoots include the likes of Intermission, King Arthur, The Clinic, Asteroids, Braveheart, Breakfast on Pluto, Ordinary Decent Criminal, Tudors and Man About Dog. I’m there a good half an hour watching stunt men and women, some in training and some practicing their skills, before I’m called. Myself and my photographer who is as calm as though he were doing this all his life, are escorted to the cars. “Which one do you want to go in?” Tony asks me. ‘Neither,’ I
think but instead I calmly say “Oh any, it doesn’t matter to me.” My heart is in my mouth. And we’re off! I’ve barely strapped myself in and Tony is driving towards the maze of cones which I earlier watched himself and his brother zip in and out of at the speed of light. Within seconds we are flying along the track in hot pursuit of the others. Weaving in and out with perfect precision Tony avoids each cone as I scream like a little girl on every bend. Over the radio I hear a crackling and Brendan asks if we want to engage in a little ‘cat and mouse’ activity. I don’t like the sound of it but that’s irrelevant – it’s on! Speeding down to the end of the track we come face to face with our ‘opponents.’ I’m still not sure what’s going on but I soon realise when Tony reverses taking the track backwards weaving, once again, in and out of the cones except this time all I can see are the others driving straight at us. I’m squealing again and I’m not proud of it but Brendan’s car is right on us, we are bumper to bumper with barely an inch between us it’s as though he’s forcing us to drive, faster and faster.
Actors which Brendan has co-ordinated with include Colin Farrell, Liam Neeson, Kevin Spacey, Brendan Gleeson, Daniel Day Lewis, Pierce Brosnan and Brenda Fricker among many others. Brendan is a qualified commercial diver and precision stunt driver. He is qualified in advanced production safety, stunt performance and co-ordination and his company also supplies rental equipment. Additionally he is the president of the Irish Stunt Guild and a full member of the Irish Actors Equity. Brendan has completed and run advanced courses in precision stunt driving in Ireland with the legendary US stunt and Law enforcement driver Bobby Ore. He said: “Scenes where someone is actually set on fire are among the most dangerous ever filmed. Great care and experience is required when performing this stunt. I currently hold the record for the longest full body burn filmed in Ireland. I have also been trained as a Fire Marshall by the MRCCI and hold a Nifast HSA qualification.” Brendan’s fighting skills are based around real training and actual competition. He has competed at national level in Thai Boxing, Kick Boxing and Kung Fu. Contact Norman Kelly on 087 291 7499 for Martial Arts training. What is Tony stops suddenly? What if Brendan puts his foot down a little too hard? We’re going to end up more compact than the cars put forward for the scrappage scheme. There’s a crackling over the radio again and I know that, that means something else is going to happen and within seconds we rip around the corner backwards in a 180 degree turn and somehow, by some miracle, end up side by side with the other car. I feel sick. The two men confer through open windows before we’re off again. Chasing each other around the course, ripping through the cones, taking up the gravel on sharp turns and ending up nose to nose. They’re chatting again over the airwaves before Tony turns to me and says – “Want to drive?” This wasn’t in the game plan, this wasn’t what I was expecting but my sense of control has taken over and I leap at the chance. Perhaps if I’m driving I can, I don’t know...GO SLOW! Definitely,” I say hopping out of the car and into the driver’s seat. “Now I want you to follow the course, in and out of the cones, making sure not to hit any,” he says. ‘Simple enough’, I think as I pull out in front of the other car and take on the course. Slowly in and slowly out. I glance sideways to make sure Tony is not asleep. In and out, slowly does it… I haven’t hit a cone yet and I’m delighted with myself.
“Ok speed it up now,” he says. “What – no, no I’m fine the way I am’, I start to panic. “FASTER,” he says and under pressure I put the foot down. I’m driving well above my comfort zone of 40mph now and my hair is still on. Weaving in and out I suddenly feel more and more at ease. I can do this. I am in control, we aren’t going to die and I am in charge. I put the foot down further and this time squeal again – but this time in delight. “That’s it,” says Tony “keep it going. Concentrate on the course and go as fast as you can. Stay in control, ease off the clutch and drive!” So I do what I’m told and I feel like I’m flying! I can’t help it I just want to go faster and faster now. I’m pumped. I glance over at Tony expecting to see fear in his eyes but he looks like he might aswell be on a Sunday drive eating an ice-cream. I put my foot down harder. I feel like I could do anything, take on a ramp, do a box park [in between two cars] flip this thing over and come out unscathed. I’m barely even concentrating now, I’m picturing myself doubling for Angelina in her next big flick, before I’m brought back to earth with a thump.
“Woooahhhh wooahhh ok,” that’s enough for now Tony is saying calmly. “Let’s pull up here.” It’s clear he has seen the madness in my eyes and I know my stunt career has just come to an end. I pull up, alight from the car and look back to see a sea of cones, knocked down, crushed, splattered on the ground and my heart sinks. Perhaps I wasn’t the driver I thought I was – maybe I’d be best placed on a film set like Deathrace 2,000 – I’m clearly only cut out for mowing things down.

An innovative service, which allows patients to avail of hospital treatment in their own home, has been made available to all VHI healthcare members. The VHI Homecare service is the brainchild of Chay Bowes Founder and CEO, who became increasingly impressed by a similar programme run in America since the 1970s. The service allows patients to be treated by doctors and nurses in their own homes rather than having to stay in hospital and is conducive, according to Chay, to a happier and indeed speedier recovery. He said: “The reason we founded it was to move patients, who didn’t need to be in a hospital necessarily, and make them more comfortable in recovery surrounded by their family but still with the proper medical treatment. We have worked with all the major public hospitals and realised that there was a huge amount of patients were still there who didn’t need to be. We realised that they were getting treatments which could be administered in the home. He added: So far we have treated over 1,000 patients through the Homecare service and it has been fantastic in keeping A&E numbers down as well as freeing up much-needed hospital beds. It has been extremely well received.”
16
The Homecare service see doctors and nurses who work directly for the VHI assigned to patients in their home. These doctors and nurses will remain assigned to that patient until they are no longer needed - there is no time limit on the service. Chay said: “We wanted to develop a service where doctors and nurses come into the home and build a relationship with their patients which provides comfort and ease. In the long run this is a lot cheaper for the state and the insurer and the main advantage is that there is no risk of contracting hospital bugs like MRSA. “Patients recover a lot faster around family, especially the elderly who can go downhill fast.” The service is available to all VHI customers, at any level, and does not cost anything extra. Non-members wishing to have the service made available to them should they need it can simply join and it is immediately there for them. Chay added: The proof of the pudding is in the eating. This service is really something else. The doctors and nurses can treat some quite complex things in the home but the most important thing is that it all revolves around the patient. It’s all about them.”

THE
music industry isn’t an easy one to break into at the best of times, but one-year-old band Champagne Animal has defied the odds, seeing off stiff competition to earn the right to support hot group, Fight Like Apes, and in doing so earning itself the reputation of ‘king of the jungle’. Fresh from successful performances at Electric Picnic the band, which is headed up by Tallaght’s Dave Kennedy and Clontarf’s Siobhan Lynch, Champagne Animal has recently launched its debut EP and in the name of one of its singles invaded the ears of hundreds of fans who just can’t get enough. The band’s sound has been likened to that of superstars from Florence and the Machine and Adele to Led Zeppelin - but not ones to be labelled, Dave told InTallaght that it isn’t about comparisons, it’s about writing whatever sounds good and not getting boxed in. .........................................
24
So Where Does The Name Champagne Animal Come From?
How Long Has The Band Been Together?
When Siobhan (the Lead Singer) used to go out on work nights, the nights themselves were nicknamed the ‘night of the drunken champagne animals,’ they had a Facebook site for organizing them and everything and it was she who thought that it would make a great name for the band. It works for us; it’s eye catching and it keeps people wondering.
We’ve only been together just over a year. We launched officially in May last year and we have been gigging continuously ever since. We have worked very hard and even won a slot to support Fight like Apes which is a lot for such a young band. We are determined, and to keep working and keep gigging as much as we can is our motto.
Where Are You Both From? I am from Tallaght and Siobhan is from Clontarf. How Did You Meet? We knew each other through The Dublin Gospel Choir, then we got together to put forward an entry for The Meteor Music Awards. It was a little project and it didn’t get anywhere but we decided then that we had something we could work with. We each had some tracks so we started working on the music and we went from there.
Describe Your Music.
How Was Electric Picnic?
This is a tough question which we are always asked. Basically though we write whatever we feel sounds good. Siobhan’s voice is very soulful so what we tend to say is that we are Indie Soul but we don’t want to box ourselves in because when you do that you find you have to keep to that, which is not what we are about.
It was absolutely amazing – great craic. We were playing with The Gospel Choir on The Sunday at 12 then Champagne Animal played the Love Music Hate Racism tent as well as the OxJam tent. We knew people from gigging around Dublin who were involved in the organising of the tents and we were delighted to get the slots. We had great crowds, loads of our mates obviously came but we had new people listening too who were bopping along. The more we gig the more we see familiar faces, people who have seen us somewhere else and are coming back to another gig for more, which is really encouraging.
Do You Both Write All Of The Songs? Yes we both work well together, which is great. We say we take our inspiration from the likes of Regina Spektor to The Kings of Leon and The Arctic Monkeys. Some people have likened us to people like Adele and Led Zeppelin which is quite a range but proves that we are a mix of sounds.
Reading and everything. We’re thinking big and hoping for the best. We are of course looking to be spotted and signed so we need to get out there – everywhere! What’s Been Your Best Gig So Far? The night we launched our EP in The Grand Social was definitely the best gig so far. We really put a lot into it. We had so many people on stage including a string section – it was fantastic. We had had a brilliant gig there before so we knew it was the place for the launch. We worked really hard to make it what it was, rehearsing 7/8 hours a day and it was worth every effort.
Will You Be Back Next Year?
What’s The Plan For The Band In The Next Year & Beyond?
We’re hoping to be back, maybe even into a bigger tent. To be honest we’ll be really pushing for all the big festivals –
The plan for the next year is to gig, gig, gig. Get our name out there and hopefully become the next big thing.

IT’S
been almost three years since former Republic of Loose member Bres left the band and he hasn’t let the grass grow under his feet. The man who wrote many of the bands hits such as Comeback Girl and The Steady Song, has just unleashed his latest venture, Cars Love Girls, with sister Orla, also formerly of ROL, and early signs indicate that the sibling combo could be just the ticket. The band’s debut single ‘Lose Your Mind’ is out on October 14th and they are currently supporting Bressie on his nationwide tour. Frontman Bres took a few minutes out to speak to InTallaght about life after the Loose and his dreams of supporting his hero Prince. ......................................... So Tell Me About Cars Love Girls. Well we’re brother and sister and we played in Republic of Loose together but I left almost three years ago and Orla left the following year. We set up Cars Love Girls last year and spent the first ten months recording. It’s all kicking off now for us this month. We have a few gigs under our belt and plenty in the pipeline so the live thing will be crazy – crazy good! Where Did The Name Come From? We had a bunch of different names floating around. Prefab Sprout are a big influence, one of their songs is Cars and Girls and we really liked that idea.
26
Paddy McAloon said cars and girls is all there is to life and I suppose in a way it is. Cars, girls and love.
Nothing lasts forever. We spent ten years relying on each other for everything from money to our social lives and it was extremely tough.
Who Is In The Band? It’s myself and Orla, I do most of the writing and she does most of the singing. When I’m writing we talk, we talk about what way the songs will go and what she’d be most comfortable singing. Why Did You Leave Republic Of Loose? I was a founding member of the Loose but we were six different characters and with that creative issues can, and did, come up. I just ended up feeling that I could have more of an input in my own stuff. Are You Glad You Made That Decision? I am happy with the decision. Things change and I had a great time with some great experiences, but some were not so great. It was 50/50 but I am absolutely delighted to be doing what I am now.
The fact is though, that there were no punches thrown and I would shake any of their hands any day. Do You Still Keep In Touch? We do yeah, I was out for pints with Dave last week and that’s great. At the same time we all lived in each other’s pockets for ten years so we give ourselves space too. Describe Your Sound. It has a funk, feel-good, soul vibe to it. You wrote a lot of the Republic of Loose hits – do people draw comparisons with Cars Love Girls? There are similarities, obviously the album isn’t out yet [it’s out in January] so we haven’t had any reviews of it but it sounds like a certain type of a part of
the Loose. It was always going to sound a bit like them because I had such an input there but at the same time we are a completely different band and we are bringing something different to the table. With this album we had to go back to the drawing board and decide what to do. We could have gone any way – blues, soul, anything! But I get a lot of my inspiration from the 80s and so we went back to real pop – there’s a definite 80s sheen off it. It’s pop music to its core. Where do you get your inspiration? The likes of Prince and Madonna. I love the 80s but I appreciate much of the new music too. What bands do you rate on the Dublin Music scene at the moment? There has been so much over the past four years – Jape, Villagers, James McMorrow and even Lisa Hannigan’s new stuff I like. It’s the most exciting time for the Irish music scene since the 80s. Even The Script, they are world class and while I wouldn’t stick them on myself I can appreciate how good they are and how successful they have been. Which gig are you most looking forward to? We have a great gig coming up in The Olympia with FM104. I haven’t played there since I was with the Loose and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a great spot – you can’t argue with that. We’re also playing the Academy with Bressie and that should be great too. Who do you dream of supporting? I would love to support Prince, that would be the dream. I went to see him in Malahide Castle and he was amazing. So where can we catch you playing soon? We’re supporting Hard Working Class Heroes in October and are headlining our own show at Crawdaddy on November 5th. 27

Steven Paul Jobs, the Apple Inc. chairman and co-founder who pioneered the personal-computer industry and changed the way people think about technology, died at the age of 56. His family, in a statement released by Apple, said Mr. Jobs "died peacefully today (Oct 5th) surrounded by his family." The company didn't specify the cause of death. Mr. Jobs had battled pancreatic cancer and several years ago received a liver transplant. In August, Mr. Jobs stepped down as chief executive, handing the reins to longtime deputy Tim Cook. "Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being," Mr. Cook said in a letter to employees. "We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much." During his more than three-decade career, Mr. Jobs transformed Silicon Valley as he helped turn the oncesleepy expanse of fruit orchards into the technology industry's innovation center. In addition to laying the groundwork for the industry alongside others like Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates, Mr. Jobs proved the appeal of well-designed products over the power of technology itself and transformed the way people interact with technology. "The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come," Mr. Gates said in a statement. The most productive chapter in Mr. Jobs's career occurred near the end of his life, when a nearly unbroken string of successful products like the iPod, iPhone and iPad changed the PC, electronics and digital-media industries. The way he marketed and sold those
products through savvy advertising campaigns and Apple's retail stores helped turn the company into a pop-culture phenomenon. At the beginning of that phase, Mr. Jobs described his philosophy as trying to make products that were at "the intersection of art and technology." In doing so, he turned Apple into the world's most valuable company with a market value of $350 billion.
Beyond PCs Apple now produces $65.2 billion a year in revenue compared with $7.1 billion in its business year ended September 1997. Apple dropped the "computer" in its name in January 2007 to underscore its expansion beyond PCs.
After losing considerable weight in mid-2008, Mr. Jobs took a nearly six-month medical leave of absence in 2009, during which he received a liver transplant. He took another medical leave of absence in mid-January, without explanation, before stepping down as CEO. Mr. Jobs is survived by his wife, Laurene, and four children.
Although Mr. Jobs officially handed over the reins of the company to Mr. Cook, his death nevertheless raises a question for Apple of how it will sustain its success without his vision and guidance. Other companies, including Walt Disney, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and International Business Machines Corp., experienced some transitional woes before eventually managing to thrive after their charismatic founders passed on.
Mr. Jobs turned Apple into the largest retailer of music and helped popularise computer-animated films as the financier and CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, which he later sold to Walt Disney Co. He was a key figure in changing the way people used the Internet and how they listened to music, watched TV shows and movies, and read books, disrupting industries in the process.
But few companies of that stature have shown such an acute dependence on their founder, or have lost the founder at the peak of his career. Several years after Mr. Jobs was fired from Apple in 1985, the company began a steady decline that saw it drift to the margins of the computer industry. That slide was reversed only after Mr. Jobs returned in 1997.
"Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started," Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement.
Mr. Jobs also leaves behind many tales about his mercurial management style, such as his habit of calling employees or their ideas "dumb" when he didn't like something. He was even more combative against foes like Microsoft, Google Inc., and Amazon.com Inc. When Adobe Systems Inc. waged a campaign against Apple for not supporting Adobe's Flash video format on its iPhones and iPads in April 2010, Mr. Jobs wrote a 1,600-word essay about why the software was outdated and inadequate for mobile devices.
Mr. Jobs pulled off a remarkable business comeback, returning to Apple after an 11-year absence during which he was largely written off as a has-been. He went on to revive the struggling company by introducing products such as the iMac all-in-one computer, iPod music player and iTunes digital-music store.
He maintained uncompromising standards for the company's hardware 29
and software, demanding "insanely great" aesthetics and ease of use from the moment a shopper walked into one of Apple's stores. His attention to detail shaped some of the distinctive features of Apple's products. Mr. Jobs enforced strict secrecy among employees, a strategy that he believed heightened anticipation for new products. News of his death came a day after Apple unveiled its newest device, the iPhone 4S, without him on stage. Mr. Jobs, the adopted son of a family in California, was born on Feb. 24, 1955. A college dropout, he established his reputation early on as a tech innovator when, at 21 years old, he and friend Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer Inc. in the Jobs family garage in 1976. Mr. Jobs chose the name, in part, because he was a Beatles fan and admired the group's Apple records label, according to the book "Apple: The Inside Story of Intrigue, Egomania, and Business Blunders" by Wall Street Journal reporter Jim Carlton. The pair came out with the Apple II in 1977, a computer that was relatively affordable and designed for the mass market rather than for hobbyists. It went on to become one of the first commercially successful PCs, making the company $117 million in annual
sales by the time of Apple's initial public offering in 1980. The IPO instantly made Mr. Jobs a multimillionaire.
be in the colors of Apple's early rainbow logo. Mr. Crow says he persuaded Mr. Jobs it was an unnecessary expense.
Not all of Mr. Jobs's early ideas paid off. The Apple III and Lisa computers that debuted in 1980 and 1983 were flops. But the distinctive all-in-one Macintosh—foreshadowed in a TV ad inspired by George Orwell's novel "1984" that famously only aired once—would set the standard for the design of modern computer operating systems.
Even in his appearance, Mr. Jobs seemed to cultivate an image more like that of an artist than a corporate executive. In public, he rarely deviated from an outfit consisting of Levi's jeans, a black mock turtleneck and New Balance running shoes.
Even then, Mr. Jobs was a stickler for design details. Bruce Tognazzini, a former user-interface expert at Apple who joined the company in 1978, once said that Mr. Jobs was adamant that the keyboard not include "up," "down," "right," and "left" keys that allow users to move the cursor around their computer screens.
Cultivated Image Mr. Jobs's pursuit of aesthetics sometimes bordered on the extreme. George Crow, an Apple engineer in the 1980s and again from 1998 to 2005, recalls how Mr. Jobs wanted to make even the inside of computers attractive. On the original Macintosh PC, Mr. Crow says Mr. Jobs wanted the internal wiring to
As Apple expanded, Mr. Jobs decided to bring in a more experienced manager to lead the company. He recruited John Sculley from PepsiCo Inc. to be Apple CEO in 1983, overcoming Mr. Sculley's initial reluctance by asking the executive if he just wanted to sell "sugar water to kids" or help change the world. After Apple fell into a subsequent slump, a leadership struggle led to a board decision to back Mr. Sculley and fire Mr. Jobs two years later at the age of 30. "What can I say—I hired the wrong guy," Mr. Jobs brooded in a PBS documentary. "He destroyed everything I had spent 10 years working for." Mr. Jobs then created NeXT Inc., a start-up that in 1988 introduced a black desktop computer with advanced software. The machine suffered from a high price and some key design decisions. But its operating system would eventually become a foundation for OS X, the software backbone of today's Macs, after Apple purchased NeXT for $400 million in December 1996. In 1986, using part of his fortune from Apple, Mr. Jobs paid filmmaker George Lucas $10 million to acquire the computer-graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd. The company Mr. Jobs formed from that purchase, Pixar Animation Studios, went on to create a string of computer-animated film hits, such as "Toy Story." Mr. Jobs sold Pixar to Disney in 2006 in a $7.4 billion deal.
30
In Mr. Jobs's absence, Apple began foundering, and computers using Intel chips and Microsoft software became increasingly dominant. By 1997, Apple had racked up nearly $2 billion in losses in two years, its shares were at record lows and it was on its third CEO—Gil Amelio—in four years. Eight months after the deal to buy NeXT in December 1996, Mr. Amelio was ousted and Mr. Jobs appointed interim CEO, a title that became permanent in January 2000. One former Apple employee recalls Mr. Jobs joking soon after he returned that "the lunatics have taken over the asylum and we can do anything we want.”
Series of Stumbles Mr. Jobs, who was given a salary of $1 a year along with options to Apple stock, made a series of changes. He killed the struggling Newton handheld computer and trimmed a confusing array of Mac models to a handful of systems focused on the consumer market. In May 1998, he introduced the iMac, an unusual one-piece computer that sported a colorful translucent case. Apple launched an ad campaign featuring the phrase "Think Different," featuring photographs of creative individuals including Albert Einstein and Muppets creator Jim Henson. While shareholders cheered the changes, Mr. Jobs flexed his power on Apple's Cupertino, Calif., campus. Within months of taking over, he replaced four of the five top executives with former NeXT underlings. He issued emails forbidding employees to bring pets to the office or to smoke, even in parking lots. He threatened to fire anyone caught leaking company documents. Apple had stumbles during Mr. Jobs's second stint, including a cube-shaped Macintosh that failed to catch on and was scrapped in 2001. The failure was one reason Apple posted a quarterly loss and warned it would miss estimates several times in 2000 and 2001.
But big hits followed. In 2001, Apple introduced the iPod, which transformed digital music players. Apple has more than 70% market share. A key advantage was the iTunes Music Store, opened in 2003. Mr. Jobs helped persuade major record labels to sell recordings for 99 cents each. The store, which has sold more than 16 billion songs, became an incentive for people to buy iPods because, for much of its history, songs from the iTunes store could be downloaded only to Apple's music player.
became a force in the mobile phone market, selling 92 million iPhones as of December 2010. Last year, Mr. Jobs also unveiled the iPad tablet computer to great fanfare. Apple has sold more than 29 million iPads as buyers snapped them up. People who work closely with Mr. Jobs said the project was so important to him that he was deeply involved in its planning even while recovering from his 2009 liver transplant.
Bench of Executives At the same time, Mr. Jobs was building his bench of executives. He recruited Mr. Cook, a former Compaq Computer Corp. executive, in the late 1990s to straighten Apple's operations and promoted him over time to chief operating officer. In 2004, Mr. Jobs had to lean on this bench when he disclosed that he had had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his pancreas. Apple revealed the procedure in early August 2004, but a person familiar with the situation said Mr. Jobs first learned of the tumor during a routine abdominal scan nine months earlier. The board and Mr. Jobs said nothing to Apple shareholders as the Apple executive, during that time, dealt with the tumor through changes to his diet, the person said. In June 2007, Mr. Jobs made another splash when Apple introduced the iPhone. Mr. Jobs was typically handson in the creation of the iPhone. People familiar with the matter say the former CEO was the one who made a decision to change the screen of the iPhone from plastic to glass after he unveiled the product at the Macworld trade show in 2007. The iPhone team scrambled to procure glass that would meet his standards, so the devices could be manufactured in time for the launch. Despite skepticism about Apple's ability to enter an already competitive market dominated by the likes of Research in Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry devices, Apple
Those who knew Mr. Jobs say one reason why he was able to keep innovating was because he didn't dwell on past accomplishments and demanded that employees do the same. Hitoshi Hokamura, a former Apple employee, recalls how an old Apple I that was displayed by the company cafeteria quietly disappeared after Mr. Jobs returned in the late 1990s. "Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose," Mr. Jobs said in a commencement speech at Stanford University in June 2005, almost a year after he was diagnosed with cancer.

Some would say that Noel Gallagher was always the more talented of the Gallagher brothers. Liam was the swaggering frontman, whereas Noel was the songwriter behind Oasis’ hits. There has been a lot of hype and speculation in the run up to this release, his first solo album. Oasis’ die-hard fans wondered whether Noel could pull it off on his own. Since the release of the first single, ‘The Death of You and Me’, it was clear that Noel not only has songwriting genius, but also a pleasing, distinctive voice and enough charisma to win over fans in his own right. Songs such as ‘AKA... What a Life!’ and 'If I Had A Gun' have been just as well received. Gallagher's vocals are emotional but never too sentimental and Noel's double or triple-tracked harmonies, are haunting and vulnerable. Noel’s onto a winner with his High Flying Birds. The first thing you'll notice about Champagne Animal's debut EP is Siobhan Lynch's strong, smoldering voice. It is accompanied by catchy, slightly offbeat riffs and percussion. It’s no surprise that their vocals shine, as the core members met as members of the Dublin Gospel Choir. Songs like ‘Lullaby’ and ‘Wild’ can rock fairly hard but never stray too far from a good tune. There's something about her style of singing that reminds me of Karen O, and at other times recalls Adele and even Duffy. ‘Invaded’ shows they can do softer more gentle songs and This doesn't sound like the first E.P. of a band only slightly over a year old. Their dedication and talent are obvious. They don't sound like any other band out at the moment and their combination of belting vocals and accomplished musicianship could see them go far. The game will immediately follow the events of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, where the Russian Federation continues its invasion of the United States of America, and has also expanded its offensive to Europe, including England, France and Germany. Campaign stages are also planned for Somalia, Sierra Leone, Moscow and Dubai. Gameplay videos from E3 2011 in Los Angeles showed Delta Force soldiers helping Navy Seal Teams force a Russian submarine to surface in the East River and boarding it to destroy the other boats in the harbor. Before this, Delta Force soldiers are on a mission to destroy a radar jamming installation on top of the New York Stock Exchange. On Episode 502 of GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley, footage was shown of SAS soldiers fighting terrorists in the streets of London, eventually chasing them through a subway and killing them. They proceed to a subway station and eventually end up on the streets of London once again. Michael Condrey, Co-Founder of Sledgehammer Games, explained that the SAS are tracking a package belonging to ultranationalist Vladimir Makarov and is considered deadly and must be found and captured.

'Absolutely Fabulous' Returns For 3 Specials Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Saunders, Julia Sawalha, June Whitfield and Jane Horrocks will reprise their roles for three special episodes of the award-winning sitcom. Lumley told ITV's This Morning: "We are doing just three, and Jennifer Saunders - it's like luring some amazingly strange creature out of a cave because out she came and said she'd like to do three more. So we've done one for Christmas, one for the New Year and one for next year's Olympics which is going to be shown the same week as the Olympics." "It was just extraordinary! Just so great - the hair goes up and voice goes down a bit and out come the old cigarettes and there she is again! I think she's a part of what everyone wants to be - I think there's just a 'don't care' attitude that's rather lovely. I have to say I don't drink like that, and I don't smoke like that - I don't do those things - but part of us just likes them for being 'yeah, well, who cares'."
Gary Barlow May Write The X Factor Winner’s Single Gary Barlow could earn an extra £1m for penning the X Factor winner's Christmas song. Executives at the ITV show are discussing using the Take That star's writing talents for the finalists' songs and giving him a bonus payout. Barlow already gets a £1.5m salary for being the X Factor's head judge. A source told The Sun: "The move will be a huge boost to the show's credibility as it means the X Factor single won't be just another cover. Barlow will also get a payout from writing credits - usually 50% of profits - as well as airplay royalties. It will be the first time since the X Factor launched in 2004 that the winner will release an original song as their first single. Every winner has topped the charts with their first solo song. 47
BFG Movie DreamWorks has picked up the movie rights to Roald Dahl's book "The BFG". Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are slated to produce the new version. "E.T." writer Melissa Mathison will adapt "The BFG," a children's book about a big friendly giant that was first published in 1982. Several of the author's other children's books, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "James and the Giant Peach" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox" have also been adapted for the big screen.
X Factor - A New Era Frank & Honest - How We Here At InTallaght Read It Despite haemoragging an estimated 2.5 million viewers for the live shows this year we here at InTallaght think that this series of the X Factor has turned a corner. For starters how nice not to have to listen to the incessant sharp-tongued, but not half as sharp-witted, comments from Mr Cowell and instead to be treated to the highly talented opinion of one Gary Barlow. Tulisa seems a nice girl who has been bringing the rap out of so many of the contestants and it’s because of her we feel that a whole new sound is also emerging from the artists on stage. Never before have we seen so many strobe lights and club sounds – it’s refreshing! Louis is his ever-loveable self and Kelly, a beautiful woman with a commendable career we admit, but she truly needs a few more phrases than ‘y’all are putting it down’ and ‘ya’ll killed it’ or she is in danger of becoming as uninspiring as XFactor USA’s Paula Abdul who tells most contestants that they are ‘shining stars’.

The competition itself this year is fierce with some real contenders in each category. Hot favourite is Ireland’s own Janet Devlin, the next Ellie Goulding, only better. There’s Frankie – tattoobum – Cocozza, a hit with the ladies and popular with his mentor Gary at the start but as the weeks go on appears too cocky to build up a solid fan-base. Then there’s Rhythmix, possibly the hottest girlband since the Spice Girls. Rhythmix are ensuring that this year the traditional bad run of luck for the groups could be about to end. They are young, gorgeous, talented and cool each with individual styles and Tulisa may well be about to bring them all the way. And what about Misha B? Marcus? Sophie? Craig? Johnny? It’s all too much – we cannot decide who we want to win it! What about another big twist where they all just perform for us every week until Christmas and then all take a share in the prize?! Well maybe all except Kitty cat. There’s something not quite right there – we’re sensing she might just be as disloyal as your average feline friend and eight out of ten of us just don’t like it!
“I MISS CHERYL!! I’ve been having a great time watching the XFactor. It has brought back so many memories, myself and the Belle Amie girls have been saying that we’d just love to be back there! The judges are doing a great job to be fair although it is very weepy! Emotions are really running high. The Irish did fantastic to be fair so that was great to see. Ballyfermot’s Michelle Barrett was amazing and poor Tulisa was reduced to tears it was such a pity she didn’t go further than bootcamp. There was a lot of airtime being given to silly acts in the auditions though which was really annoying. I don’t know why the bad contestants were getting it, we know all about the importance of airtime and that’s just not right. Some of the acts I think were overated because of what they sang but overall it’s as entertaining as ever from the dramatic twist in the first week of live shows to poor Nu Vibe getting the boot in the second! I can’t wait to see how it goes this month and look forward to catching up with you all here next month to chat about it!

The future of Land Rover is looking quite a bit different from its present, and especially its past. The days of the rough-and-tumble, soon-to-be-retired Defender are so far behind the company that the 2012 Range Rover Evoque, a luxurious yet economical front-wheel-drive (in base form) crossover doesn't seem out of place at all. In fact, it seems like a great idea. That punchy four-cylinder turbo engine is a close relative to Ford's EcoBoost unit, rated at 240 horsepower from its 2.0-liter displacement. That might not sound like much next to the 510-horsepower supercharged beasts elsewhere in the Range Rover lineup, but it's enough to give the much smaller Evoque some pep: it takes just seven seconds to 60 mph. There is a bit of turbo lag, but has plenty of go for the trials of daily life on the freeway. A six-speed automatic transmission controls the shifts, itself controlled by a pop-up knob in the center console much like corporate cousins at Jaguar. The Sport mode boosts the fun factor, while the paddle shifters on the steering wheel further engage the driver in the action. But does it do what every Land Rover must? Can it really, seriously, go off-road? The company insists it will, and our reviewers find it to be very
50
capable. It is certainly small, but it still has slightly more ground clearance than the Land Rover LR2, while the advanced Haldex all-wheel-drive system's electronic controls for Snow, Mud & Ruts, or Sand make short work of even very slippery surfaces. Short front and rear overhangs mean approach angles are very good, but at the end of the day, though it's very capable off road, it's not the luxuryliner-crossed-with-a-mountain-goat that a "true" Range Rover is. Inside, the story is even better: highquality wood and metallic trim, supple leathers, and styling to mimic the full-size Range Rovers are the highlights. A range of "themes" offer tiered upgrades to more and more equipment, but even the base Evoque comes standard with a 380-watt audio system, USB input, automatic headlights and climate control, front and rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera. Upgrades available include a hard-drive navigation system, rear-seat DVD entertainment, surround-view camera, and a panoramic glass roof. .....................................................

Smaller than the Audi Q7 it may be, but size is relative and at just over 4.6 metres in length, almost 1.9 metres wide and standing some 1.6 metres tall, the Audi Q5 is by no means small. What is more, the 2.1 metre wheelbase is said to be the longest in its class. This has been made possible by moving the differential forward of the clutch, which in real terms, means more cabin space. The Audi Q5 test car housed the smaller petrol unit, which, with the help of TFSI technology, produces 211PS between 4,300- and 6,000rpm and 350Nm from as low down as 1,500 rpm and doesn't start to tail off until 4,200rpm is reached. These are diesel-like figures and as such, an advantage when towing or off-roading.
FSI stands for Fuel Stratified Ignition, which is a way of making the engine do more for less fuel; it was first developed for the Le Mans 24-hour race and now we all have the benefit of the technology. TFSI adds an exhaust turbocharger, allowing a 0-62mph time of just 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 137mph.

BMW has built a reputation for building cars that are engaging to drive and that even extends to its off-road models. However, the first-generation X3 was the exception to that rule: it wasn't much fun on the road and it wasn't much cop off it. On the tarmac the ride was lumpy due to the overly stiff suspension and you
couldn't guarantee that it would be able to negotiate muddy slopes and rutted terrain like a Land Rover Freelander. However, BMW has improved the second generation - the suspension has been reworked to be a little more forgiving but thankfully the car still corners well. On the slippery stuff, it also acquitted itself well: we tested the car in snowy conditions and it proved up to the task. Because of restricted numbers residuals are now on a par with the rival Audi Q5 and emissions have been lowered making the X3 a much better proposition. There have also been very slight changes to the design of the X3 to give it a sportier look ...................................................

This month’s review is actually more of a gadget Preview as the Ford Ebike is not yet available to purchase. At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Ford Motor Company unveiled its E-Bike Concept, an electric bicycle. Ford is the latest car maker to turn its talents to bicycles, and this concept E-Bike is the result. Unlike most other car-branded bikes, though, this one actually brings automotive tech to the party. The bicycle part is pretty standard, if outlandishly styled. The frame is fashioned from aluminum and carbon fiber, the wheels look like 1980s mags, the gears are internal Shimano Alfine (11-speed), the “chain” is a carbon belt and the brakes are disks. But the electric part is way neater. The li-ion battery inside the frame drives a 350w motor in the front hub. Also inside the hub are magnetostriction sensors. These sensors, which change shape when a magnetic field is applied (and vice
versa) allow the wheel to detect when it is turning and apply power appropriate to how hard you are pedaling. These sensors come from F1 cars. The setup can be tweaked by an app on the Android phone up on the “dash.” This app also shows you all the usual bike computer info like speed and distance, along with more car-like functions like “service reminder” and “System diagnosis.” An iPhone app is planned, which makes me think that this concept may actually make it into production.
I’m not sure how I feel about car companies making bikes. On the one hand, it shows that cycling is definitely on the up. On the other, seeing a car manufacturer muscling in is like seeing a cigarette company making candy for kids — chilling. Wilke added, “With its cutting edge design, cross-gender appeal, robust build quality and high performance drive package, we believe the Ford E-Bike Concept would be the perfect addition to the e mobility solutions we will offer.”
“The E-Bike market is growing very, very rapidly, with some 30 million units sold globally last year,” said Axel Wilke, director, vehicle personalisation, Ford Customer Service Division Europe. “We see E-Bikes as an important element of urban electric mobility. More and more people are using E Bikes for short distance commuting and they are becoming comfortable with the concept of electric mobility.”

iCloud Hype Always at the forefront of innovative, useful, user friendly design, Apple has had the computing world abuzz since the end of May about their new iCloud service. It is a "cloud storage and cloud computing service"; but what does it do? As the Apple website puts it: Your Content. On All Your Devices: iCloud is so much more than a hard drive in the sky. It’s an effortless way to access just about everything on all your devices. iCloud stores your content so it’s always accessible from your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. It gives you instant access to your music, apps, latest photos, and more. And it keeps your email, contacts, and calendars up to date across all your devices. No syncing required. No management required. In fact, no anything required. iCloud does it all for you.”
(http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4686, HT4701 and HT4702).
No Streaming Apple's take on the cloud is downloadcentric. Information, music, and photos are stored in the cloud and then synced to devices. You'll have to have the complete files downloaded to your device, which means iCloud won't save you any storage space. You'll have access to data without wireless connectivity, but some of its components rely on Wi-Fi—3G won't cut it.
iTunes Match When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage. Your purchased music, apps, books, and TV shows, as well as your Photo Stream, don’t count against your free storage. If you need more storage, you can easily purchase a storage upgrade right from your device. iCloud replaces Apple’s MobileMe service. While it adds quite a few new features, old features such as iDisk are not going to be included. If you have any files on iDisk that you’d like to keep, download them before June next year, when MobileMe finishes. Apple has published a guide to preserving files on iDisk, your iWeb site and galleries created with iPhoto: 56
While you can sync iTunes-purchased songs and albums using iTunes in the iCloud, if you want to access music from other sources, there’ll be a cover charge. This service will only be available in the US at first but for a yearly fee of $25, iTunes Match scans your iTunes library and locates all of your songs in Apple's 18-million song library. If your song exists in the master library — it most likely does — Apple grants access to a high-quality (256 Kpbs), DRM-free version. If it doesn’t, iTunes Match automatically uploads it.
Photo Stream Photo Stream is built for sharing your mobile photos. It automatically makes your 1,000 most recent photos available to all your devices for 30 days.
Consider it a temporary solution, rather than a permanent backup. All in all Apple iCloud has some interesting features and as a free service, it’s worth exploring if you’ve got an iDevice. .....................................................

I have been studying and investigating crime, professional and amateur criminals for almost 18 years and I would like to share some of my findings with you. There are many different types of criminals, but when it comes to robbery or kidnappings, there are two types: professionals and amateurs, also known as opportunists. According to James G Shortt, Director General of the International Bodyguard Association; "These are professionals whom seek opportunity and amateurs whom seize opportunity." I believe the key to defeating the criminal lies in the presentation of opportunity. When you present opportunity to a criminal then sooner or later you will enter their dreaded victim state. Amateur criminals don't intend to steal from you but if they see an opportunity that you have unwittingly presented to them, then they will relieve you of your possessions. The professional however wants to spend the money they will earn from the crime or robbery against you. The professional robber or kidnapper will survey their intended target well before the robbery being against person or property. They plan and then execute on the timing. They gather the vital information of whom, where and when on your movements especially if you run a successful cash rich business.
How do we defeat the professional & amateur criminal? Both the professional and amateur robber have many things in common and this commonality becomes their vulnerability. They both need opportunity to carry out their crime against you or your family. If you present a criminal with opportunity then you will be 58
exploited, it’s as simple as that. No opportunity equals no crime. Remember basic security costs nothing only some common sense.
Securing Your Home When securing your home think like a criminal. Ask yourself: "What do I have that a thief would want to steal?” The price of gold and silver is at an all time high and the cash rewards are instant for the criminal. Where do you keep your valuables i.e. gold and other jewellery etc.? Do you keep everything in your bedroom? That makes it easy for the robber to get all your valuables in one go. Perhaps you should spread your valuables and other family possessions around different parts of your home. What about your car, where do you keep your car keys? On the hall table maybe? Evidence shows that a car thief will break into your home to get your car keys if your vehicle has an immobilizer. How handy would it be for the robber if you just leave the keys on the hall table for him or her to steal? Unfortunately this is what a lot of people do before they go to bed at night. Remember also when out in your car especially while shopping to make sure you keep your valuables locked in your car boot and out of sight, especially laptops, handbags and kids’ computer games and toys. According to Sergeant Mark Redmond of Crime prevention, Tallaght, “a car full of goods is like a shop window to a criminal.” to tell your friends what you are doing. When using social media never mention that you are going away on holiday, only when you have returned. The criminals out there are getting more sophisticated at how they gather information. In a recent case in the
United States, a home was burgled while the occupants were away and their insurance company refused to pay out because they advertised their absence on social media. Never post photos of the front of your home on social media as this gives potential professional burglars a view of your home address.
escape is the most important part of their robbery planning, especially for the professional criminal.
Which type of Security should you go for?
According to Sergeant Redmond, “30% of all burglaries result in people’s failure to lock their front door and windows.” If you are going out perhaps collecting your children or doing some gardening outside or even popping into your neighbour’s, make sure you have locked your windows and doors.
Electronic Security (ie alarms & CCTV) or Physical Security Countermeasures i.e. good locks, bolts, doors and windows. Realistically both electronic and physical security i.e. locks, security doors etc.. provide multi-deterrence layers and compliment each other very effectively in protecting your home and possessions. From my experience in investigating professional robberies most professional robbers believe that your security is no match for their skills as thieves.
prevented the burglary in the first place. The question has to be asked here, why have an alarm if you never use it?
Criminals do not like it when you present a good physical and electronic deterrent and this encourages potential robbers to shop elsewhere for an easier target.
Are you using the security you already have? The alarm on your home, for instance, do you switch it on before you go out? According to Sgt Redmond many times while he investigates burglaries, he finds that alarms were never activated, that may have
To have a truly effective home security system to protect your home and family is to have an electronic deterrent ie. an alarm or close circuit television. But these are only good for recording crime or alerting the police that a robbery is taking place. What if the police are too busy to deal with your robbery in real time? The thief only needs minutes, the police can only respond when they have the resources. The key to this is to have an effective trustworthy physical deterrence i.e. solid front and back doors with mortise locking systems and good locks on your windows. This will slow the potential robber down and they don’t like delays, as their

Hair & Makeup I wanted to create a polished, timeless and contemporary hair and makeup look to create a charming and elegant finish.
Hair • The AnJels Pro-team created a feminine, statuesque, polished look for the hair. A ballet bun swiped to the side of the head and side-parted to create a simple and chic, timeless classic. We chose pearl accessories which tie in well with the pearls on the dress.
Makeup The Foundation • Here we used Prolong Wear Foundation to give a long lasting and matte finish to the skin using a 188 stippling brush to apply. (My tip: use a light pressure when applying the foundation as this will ensure a flawless finish)
The Eyes • We used neutral earthy colours on the eyes. The base colour (Painterly) was applied all over the eyelid to ensure the eyeshadow colours would last all day. • The next job was to define the eyebrows using a brow pencil (Stud) to shape and an eyeshadow to fill in.

As the ’wedding season’ is truly upon us, AnJels Pro-Makeup team has decided to bring InTallaght readers an exclusive portfolio of wedding makeup looks for Autumn/ Winter 2011. AnJels Professional Makeup Artists have teamed up with de Stafford bridal shop in Exchequer Street, Dublin 2 to bring you their Autumn/Wnter 2011 bridal looks inspired by the latest dress designs this season. ............................................................................................................................ • For the highlight, we used a matte finish (Gesso) to give the fresh look seen in the shoot. • Apply the blending colours to the crease of the eye (Cork, Brown Down) to create depth and to frame the eye, making the whites of the eye stand out. • Then apply mascara to the top and bottom lashes. False lashes are optional. Chose lashes that suit your eyes; if you have small eyes you don’t want the lashes to overpower your look. • Apply a fine layer of eyeliner, following the lash line only. To finish apply a white eye pencil to the water line which will open the eye and look great in the photos.
Finishing Touches • We used a mineralize power to contour the face. • Add a hint of colour to the cheeks with a matte blush (Peaches). • For the lips keep the colour matte and near to the natural colour of your lips (Please Me), apply a small amount of clear gloss to the centre of the top and bottom lip which will give a glass-like effect in photos. • Finally to ensure the lip line is perfect by outlining with a concealer using an angle brush to get that Vogue cover shoot finish.
Hi Fashion Lovers, Rachel here. I’ve looked at menswear this month. Men are getting more fashion conscious these days and it’s a trend I welcome. Girls put so much thought and effort into looking good, it’s about time men got in on the act. Good grooming is key to pull off this look, as women appreciate this. I’ve concentrated on a casual look and a formal look, as seen here. The clothes were supplied by Best Menswear in The Square. Having a good-fitting suit is key. Colour choice and style is key as well, and this is where the professionalism of Rob the manager and his staff come in. After my visit I realised a suit is nothing without the accessories, like a crisp fresh shirt, tie, and cufflinks and good leather shoes. For my casual look I chose a blazer and a shirt and turtleneck jumper and jeans. Please support your local shops, and until your next Rachel fix, good shopping! Go to www.bestmenswear.ie for more

I get many questions about getting flat abs, but one email stands out. This reader wrote: "I've been working on my lower belly pooch for about 2.5 years and it still won't go away even though I have a good diet." That email made me realize how long many of us persist with these types of goals, even in the face of failure. Despite the facts, many people still think they can get flat abs if they do enough ab exercises. They think, if they're not achieving that goal, they must be doing something wrong. The truth is, getting six-pack abs is hard and, if you haven't seen yours yet, maybe it's not what you're doing that's the problem.
The Myth That Wouldn't Die If you've been doing crunches forever and are wondering why you still don't have flat abs, you're no doubt operating under what I consider the biggest myth of weight loss: That you can do an exercise for a certain area of your body and get rid of the fat there. It's no wonder this myth is so popular. Pick up any popular fitness magazine and you'll find plenty of headlines to feed that belief. For example, in one issue of a popular fitness magazine recently proclaimed: "Banish Belly Fat - Tone, tighten, trim in just seven moves." Seven moves to flat abs? Who wouldn't want that? But it's these kinds of headlines that keep us stuck in the same place for months, even years, trying the same thing over and over and thinking we'll finally get it right. The truth is, six-pack abs are difficult to get. I've been exercising for 9 years, I don't have a six-pack and never have (and not for lack of trying). It took me years to understand that goal wasn't right for me and, when I finally did, my life changed for the better. What about you? Is it time to let go of old goals and set new ones? Maybe it'll help to get a clear idea of what it takes to get flat abs.
What You Really Need for Flat Abs Despite what you think, ab exercises are not the number one thing you need to do for flat abs. In fact, getting flat abs requires hard work, commitment and something else you have no control over: cooperative genes. The only way to get flat abs is to lose body fat and you already know what that requires: 1. Regular Cardio Exercise 2. Strength Training For The ENTIRE BODY (Treating The Abs Just Like Any Other Muscle In The Body) 3. A Healthy, Low-Calorie Diet

Because I read everything and anything, my reading encompasses both old and new books. This month’s review takes us back to a classic book that’s well worth revisiting. ‘The Wire’, the HBO TV show was also a slow burner, with many people not getting into it until years later, when the box sets were recommended to them by friends. On a side note, if you haven’t watched ‘The Wire’, you really should. It’s a brilliant TV show; some say it’s the greatest television series ever made. It was being a fan of ‘The Wire’ that encouraged me to read ‘Homicide’, a book that wouldn’t usually have caught my eye. The full title is ‘Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, which really says it all. It was released in 1991 and was written by Baltimore Sun reporter David Simon describing a year spent with detectives from the Baltimore Police Department homicide squad. The Baltimore police department allowed him unlimited access to the city's homicide unit for calendar year
1988, and throughout that year he shadowed one shift of detectives as they traveled from interrogations to autopsies, from crime scenes to hospital emergency rooms. Baltimore recorded 234 murders during the year Simon spent with the homicide unit. It provides a sympathetic but unromantic portrait of crime fighting in a major American city at the height of the late 1980s crime epidemic. Like ‘The Wire’, it can be hard going, but it’s really worth it.
The murder scenes are described in every gory, grisly detail imaginable but the writing is compelling.
The book starts in January 1988 and follows the detectives and the mix of quirky, absurd, and sometimes tragic cases they investigated, right through to December.
David Simon provides great insight into police work and culture: the camaraderie among police, the frustrations of working within the constraints of bureaucracy and departmental politics, and the special talents and determination of the detectives.
The narrative follows Donald Worden, a veteran investigator; Harry Edgerton, a black detective in a mostly white unit; and Tom Pellegrini, an earnest rookie who takes on the year's most difficult case, the brutal murder of an eleven-year-old girl.
It’s a long book and very indepth but I really enjoyed it, especially seeing the links between ‘Homicide’ and ‘The Wire’. I’d really recommend it if you like the crime genre.
David Simon (born 1960) is an American author, journalist, and a writer/producer of television series. He worked for the Baltimore Sun City Desk for twelve years. He wrote Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and co-wrote The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood with Ed Burns. He is the creator of the HBO television series The Wire, for which he served as executive producer, head writer, and show runner for all five seasons. More recently he also co-created the HBO series Treme with Eric Overmyer, which ended its second season in 2011.
Homicide won the 1992 Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime book.

Summertime in Tallaght, early Friday evening and 22 degrees in the shade, sipping tea, stealing time on the decking of the Interval Bistro. By my interval, stilettos and hobnail work boots, prams and wheelchairs, suits and rags, shoppers and beggars, all shapes, sizes and colours, the world’s diaspora sun-dances passing by. Fashion parade on a catwalk, women and girls paint the day, they always do in rare summer days, feminine, freeing more skin to sunrays. From the show in the Civic, drama-excited, tightly-costumed girls gather attracted by sirening calls from fruit and veg sellers. Hungry-eyed young men breathe in the diorama of scented hues, eagerly studying the birds in this glorious vista. Sipping tea on a warm day is supposed to cool you down, I don’t know about that. Michael J. Whelan MA, a South Dublin historian and poet, resident in Oldbawn Tallaght, has been awarded ‘Joint Second’ place in the prestigious Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award for his collection of poems.

The warm glow emanating from the window of the Luas was far brighter than the October midday sun outside. Four beaming teenagers chatted and giggled as they headed towards The Square for their weekly shopping fix. Fellow passengers found their eyes drawn towards their perfectly coiffed hair and their sparkling Hollywood smiles which matched the whites of their eyes beneath the false eyelashes and layers of black eyeliner. The Luas stopped and more commuters boarded. As the doors slid closed, the crowd pushed their way towards the few remaining seats. “Jesus, Johnnie, come over here,” shouted a spotty, long-haired rocker. The four teenagers; Lauren, Sarah, Kate and Debbie nudged each other, while they pretended to look out the window at the blustery day. Bored commuters watched as a handsome guy, with dark, expertly spiked hair and striking brown eyes muttered “Sorry”, “Excuse me,” numerous times before eventually appearing beside his friend. “What’s up, Luke?” he said, looking around. “Put your shades on and take a look at who’s on board – none other than - The Tan-Tastic Four!” Luke said loudly. Johnnie’s eyes scanned the nearby seats, eventually resting on the four cringing girls. He did his best to keep a straight face, his eyes crinkling up, while he coughed into his hand. All around commuters smiled and sniggered. The Tan-Tastic Four cringed in their seats, staring out the window. Their blushes appeared to fan the flames of their tans to make them even brighter. Two stops later and the four girls were the first to exit the Luas and
head towards the haven of The Square. They didn t say a word as their four tanned bodies stomped beneath the bright fluorescent lights. They arrived at their favourite store and rummaged through the rails of clothes viciously, for once, not even seeing the Saturday bargains on offer. “The cheek of that Luke Connors!” said Lauren, “how dare he! He goes around with his long, lanky hair and thinks he can make a show of us, and of course John just had to be with him when...” “What does he know about tans or looking good?” said Kate, putting an arm around her friend. “Although, maybe we were a little heavy-handed,” she sighed, looking down and grimacing at the dark brown patches around her right elbow and blobs of darker tan on her knuckles. The Tan-Tastic Four looked at each other and they all began to laugh hysterically. “I think this calls for a strawberry milkshake and a new beauty regime,” said Sarah. Three orange faces nodded up and down in agreement. ***** Lauren slammed the front door and ran up the stairs. “I’m home gran,” she shouted down, hoping that the old lady might be dozing in front of the TV. “Come on in and tell me about your day,” called her gran from the bottom of the stairs. Animal welfare is a topic that holds a special place in my heart and always has. I own a two-year-old Boxer, Tyson, who came from the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA). He is one of my best friends and adopting him was the best thing I have ever done. I would encourage people to adopt from your local shelter as it is so rewarding. Halloween is a fun and exciting time of the year for everybody but it's a month where people need to take special care of their pets, as it can be a very distressing period for our furry friends. By following a few simple guidelines you can ensure your pet is safe and sound over the Halloween season. It is so crucial to have your pet microchipped so that if it/she runs away they can be identified easily. Also make sure to have a collar with a phone number as well. The DSPCA deals with runaways mostly over the Halloween period so identification is so important. Unfortunately goodie bags are not for dogs; chocolate, sweets and grapes are toxic for pets so don’t give them any. Also be aware of sweet papers and wrappers as they may swollow them and choke . Only put your pet in fancy dress costumes if the animal is well used to it. If it seems annoyed or aggravated by what its wearing, take the costume off. Also be very careful of sparkles and diamonds on costumes they may
be itchy for your pet or may even fall off and be eaten. Take special care of older pets as they need extra attention over this time. Make sure to keep them in a safe cosy place with no windows. You can keep a radio on low to keep them calm. Another interesting tip I found was to use a few drops of rescue remedy in your dog’s water or also spray some lavender, as both these will help to keep your pet calm. Keep in mind that our pets can see 10 times brighter and can hear 10 times better than us, so fireworks and bangers can be very frightning for them. Do your best to keep them inside or keep them on their lead when outside. My most important tip of all is if your pet panics at any stage or becomes distraught and frightened, do not enable this behaviour. Don't make a fuss by petting them and coddling them; just stay calm. With these easy details you can be sure you and your pet will have a fun safe Halloween . I just want to say a huge thanks to the DSPCA, they are an amazing organisitation and I would encourage people to donate or to volunteer as they are eager for both. You should also check out their wishlist on their website where they look for items like toys and towels etc...Talk to you next month!

What is the difference between herbaceous, perennial, biennial, hardy and half hardy annuals? Hardy Annuals – Plant seed, germinate, grow and flower in the same season. Half Hardy Annuals – Have to be planted indoors and when frost is gone then can be planted outside. Biennial – Are plants that grow leaves and stems in the first year but do not flower until the following year. Perennial Flowers and Shrubs – These are plants that flower every year but may die back in winter. Herbaceous Plants – Are plants that can grow up to several feet in one year, they can be very colourful and die back to the root stock in winter and grow back again the following year.
frost-free greenhouse or shed, you can keep the tubers in a or unheated porch. Make sure your houseplants have been moved inside, repotting them if needed in a good compost mix, before the temperature drops below 60 degrees at night. Cut back and do not feed for another month or so. Water sparingly. Place near a sunny window but away from cold drafts. Think about planting some spring bulbs in containers for bright winter blooms indoors between December and March. Do not prune Azaleas, Rhododendrons and other spring flowering shrubs because they have already set their buds for next year's blooms. If you feel these shrubs do need to be pruned, however, you can prune them now, but you will sacrifice next spring’s flowers.
ROSES GENERAL MAINTENANCE Lift and divide plants that have finished blooming. Divide and replant Daisies, Callas and Day Lilies every few years for best bloom. Lift and store Dahlia Gladiolus and Tuberous Begonias. Once the first frost has discoloured the foliage, dig out the bulbs, clean off the excess soil, and store them in a box of dry peat moss or old newspapers or vermiculite in a dry place until spring. If you don't have a

Large bush roses benefit from being lightly cut back to prevent autumn wind damage. If blackspot or rust has been a problem pick off the infected leaves as best as you can and dispose of them but don't put them on the compost heap.
LAWNS This is probably your last chance to sow grass seed. Reseed barespots in the lawn as soon as possible so that
it will be established before the winter sets in. Scarify established lawns with a rake, then aerate with a fork if you haven't got around to it already. There's still time to use autumn lawn food like Ever Green Autumn Feed.
PONDS Reduce the feeding of your fish now as the days are getting shorter and the fish are becoming less active. It is also a good time to take out the submersible pump and give it a good clean up and put away for next year if not in use. Remove dead leaves from the pond. If your pond freezes over frogs can be deprived of oxygen and die. Leaving a small ball in it will keep a small area clear. .....................................................

What A Fantastic Season for Michael O’Neill and Shamrock Rovers having yet again secured the League Title with a game still remaining. It was a tough road for Rovers but since moving into Tallaght Stadium the final piece of the jigsaw has fallen into place. Since O’Neill took over in late 2008, he helped Rovers finish 2nd, 1st & 1st. He also brought the club to the 2010 FAI Cup Final where they were beaten on penalties by Sligo Rovers and to the 2011 Setanta Cup by beating Dundalk 2-0. This year though has been like no other for Rovers. They got to the semi-finals of the FAI Cup but more importantly they reached the group stages of the Europa League, the FIRST Irish team to ever reach that stage of the competition. It was no stroll in the park either. Rovers had to show their worth getting to the group stages. Firstly they were drawn against Flora Tallinn in the 2nd qualifying round of the Champions League – the first time since they played in the Top flight of European football since the 1987/88 European Cup. Rovers beat Flora Tallinn 1-0 on aggregate and were placed to face FC Copenhagen in the next round. Unfortunately Rovers lost 3-0 on aggregate but advanced to the Europa League play-off round. FK Partizan were drawn to play Rovers over the two legs. The club braced itself and the first leg was held in the Tallaght Stadium which ended 1-1. The second leg was played in the Stadion FK Partizan in front of 13,706 ending 1-1 (2-2 on aggregate). The game went into extra time and in the120th minute Rovers were rewarded a penalty and Stephen O'Donnell cooly put it away. After that momentous occassion Rovers were drawn to face Ruben Kazan, PAOK and Tottenham Hotspurs. Finally European Football is coming to Tallaght. Once a dream - now a reality. 01 52

The Premier League
had a host of exciting matches. October saw Liverpool claim victory in the 216th Merseyside derby against 10-man Everton at Goodison Park. Andy Carroll's first Barclays Premier League goal of the season and another from Luis Suarez gave the Reds all three points. The hosts had Jack Rodwell sent off in the 23rd minute for a sliding tackle but despite the disadvantage they matched their near-neighbours for long periods. Dirk Kuyt saw his first-half penalty brilliantly saved by Tim Howard but 19 minutes from time Carroll powered home Jose Enrique's cross and Suarez sealed the victory. However, on his first match back as Reds manager, the headlines were being written as early as the 23rd minute. Rodwell slid in to challenge Suarez and Atkinson immediately brandished a red card. It was the 20th dismissal in 39 Barclays Premier League meetings, 13 of which have been Everton players with eight of those coming in the last 10 matches at Goodison. Prior to that Everton had produced the best chances with Tim Cahill - passed fit after struggling with a shin injury all week - forcing Jose Reina into a fingertip save after rising highest at the far post and Sylvain Distin blazing a shot just over. But momentum of play changed in an instant after the dismissal as Cahill, who had been posing a threat to the Liverpool defence in an advanced role behind Louis Saha on his first start of the season, was dropped back into a left-sided midfield role.
Everton's high-tempo pressing play was abandoned for a deeper-lying, more measured approach and that played into the visitors' hands as they were able to control possession of the ball. However, they struggled to make a breakthrough until Phil Jagielka brought down Suarez on the corner of the penalty area just before half-time and Atkinson pointed to the spot. Kuyt, scorer of five derby goals, stepped up but Howard saved brilliantly low to his left - the first miss from the spot in a Merseyside derby since Robbie Fowler in April 2001. Everton continued to make light of their reduced number after the break with Saha shooting just wide after being teed up by Cahill just inside the area. But Liverpool were starting to create more openings and Carroll's header looked to be creeping inside the post from Stewart Downing's corner before Saha hacked away. Another Carroll effort had Howard scrambling to his left to turn around the post while Kuyt deflected Adam's quickly-taken free-kick wide. Saha rifled a 25-yard shot just wide of Reina's right-hand post before, in the 67th minute, Dalglish sent on Steven Gerrard, making only his third substitute appearance after six months out due to a groin operation, and Craig Bellamy to win him the match. Just four minutes after coming on the Wales international's run down the left released Jose Enrique and Kuyt cleverly ducked under the Spaniard's cross to allow Carroll to power home from eight yards. The match was wrapped up in the 82nd minute when Suarez grabbed the second. Collecting Kuyt's knockdown he
70
was lucky to have Distin's clearance bounce into his chest but he made the most of it to place a left-footed shot past Howard from six yards. October also saw Liverpool vs Manchester United. United were going to Anfield looking to make good on their terrible preformance there last season. Liverpool put the pressure on United from the very start and controlled United for most of the game, Gerrard returned and you could see he was dying to get stuck in. He controlled midfield, making great runs and spraying the ball around the pitch. Suarez had a great game and made things very difficult for the United defence. He had a clear cut chance to put Liverpool in front in the 1st half but put his shot straight at De Gea making it an easy save for the young United ‘keeper. But it was to be a great return for Gerard as he scored from a freekick at the KOP end. United were fuming about the dubious freekick after Adam made a great run through midfield and seemed to go down very easy after what seemed a very slight touch from Ferdinand. Sir Alex brought on Hernandez with 20 minutes to go and he seemed to make the United team buzz. It was to be the subsitute that got United level with a clever header leaving Reina with no chance in the Liverpool goal. United put the pressure on Liverpool and looked like they might sneak another but Liverpool held on and nearly scored in injury time from a cheeky Henderson lob. Another great match was Newcastle vs Spurs. Local hero Shola Ameobi came off the bench to ensure Newcastle United's unbeaten start to the season remained intact with an entertaining draw against Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park. The substitute blasted home his side's second equaliser four minutes from time as a pulsating encounter ended all square. Jermain Defoe looked to have won it for the visitors when he fired past Tim Krul with 68 minutes gone, but Ameobi denied Spurs a fifth successive Barclays Premier League win to the delight of the majority of the 46,420 crowd. Rafael van der Vaart had put Harry Redknapp's men ahead from the penalty spot five minutes before the break, but Demba Ba's equaliser - his fifth goal in three matches - within three minutes of the restart set the scene for the late drama. The second half was a wonderful encounter with both sides going close. Gutierrez produced a wonderful, mazy run, skipping pass Modric and then full-back Kyle Walker on the left before crossing for the unmarked Ba to slide in and send the ball goalwards, where Friedel could only carry it into his own net. Spurs came back strong with Adebayor fired across the face of goal and Van der Vaart shooting straight at Krul with the home defence struggling to keep the visitors at bay. Defoe and Fabricio Coloccini both might have won it in a breathless conclusion, but the spoils were ultimately shared.

The Black Panthers Kickboxing Club has been running in Tallaght for the past 18 years. Set up by Norman Kelly in 1993, the club has gone from strength to strength with several Irish National Champions – two of whom are representing their country in Citywest at the World Kickboxing Championships in November. The event will take place from November 19-26 and will see title holders Martin Kenny (27) and Richard Kiely (28) put up a fight. A third qualifier, Rebecca Dillion, was forced to pull out of the competition in June due to unforeseen circumstances. Norman himself started Martial Arts in 1979 after some time spent training in regular boxing. He first trained in Tymon North and went on to train with worldrenowned trainer John Fanning. Since its inception The Black Panthers has been in Brookfield and took only three years to produce its first champion – Alan Mahony. Every year since, the club has celebrated success after success and today not only boasts National but International champions as well as potential champions coming up through the ranks. The club has longproven itself as a haven for youngsters and adults alike and is a safe environment in which to have fun and learn to defend yourself according to Norman. He said: “Kickboxing is a fantastic sport to get into because we cover three
things primarily, self defense, keeping fit and a health regime covering flex, aerobic fitness and mental physicality. “It’s great all round and I would encourage anyone to give it a go. New members are always welcome, the more the merrier.” Instruction at the club is a team effort with other trainers including Michael Finnegan, Thomas Bateman, Theresa O’Callaghan and Alan Mahony who’s the children’s instructor. Rebecca Dillion also runs a club in Ardmore catering for children aged five years and up. The club in Brookfield is open four times a week, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings while Rebecca’s is held on a Tuesday. To date there are 80 Black Panthers and membership is made easy by the fact that there is no annual fee for the club. It costs €6 per session for seniors but if a person is unemployed they are entitled to discounts via the Link 2B Active scheme run by the South Dublin County Sports Partnership. Otherwise the cost to juniors is €3. The club gets ‘great help,’ according to Norman, from South Dublin County Council which provides the hall and subsidises the equipment. Norman and the Westside Boxing Club [which shares the hall] as well as members of the council are on the board for the hall management.
