Sligo’s reputation as a vibrant cultural and tourism destination is greatly enhanced by hosting major flagship events such as ‘Sligo Live’, and Sligo Borough Council is committed to working with our local communities and key local agencies to promote and showcase Sligo at every opportunity. The year of the ‘Gathering’ provides another exciting context to the event, as we welcome home friends and family to celebrate this showcase musical event with us. Hosting events of this scale requires an enormous commitment by many dedicated people, and I would like to pay tribute to the volunteers, sponsors, organisers and other unsung heroes who contribute so much, without expectation of acknowledgement or reward. One ambition which inspired the founding of ‘Sligo Live’ was to explore the depth and quality of Sligo’s musical tradition and heritage, and this will once again be a feature this year. Have a wonderful time

MIDLAKE with special Guests THE YOUNG FOLK

THE YOUNG FOLK Midlake stays ahead of its own time by making music that transcends it. The Denton, Texas band's 2006 release The Trails of Van Occupanther got fans and bloggers re-evaluating dormant ancestors like Fleetwood Mac, America, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and Bread - music that has been embedded in the indie worlds unconscious (Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear) ever since. On their 2010 release The Courage of Others, Midlake reinvented themselves with influences from British folk to Russian Cinema - and received rave reviews culminating in the band being named Best Live Act by Mojo Magazine.

The Young Folk making their third appearance at Sligo Live, make a well deserved move to main stage, following the strong critical reaction to their album, 'The Little Battle', and their recent appearances at both the Cambridge Folk Festival and Electric Picnic. Their trademark sound - the interplay between guitars, bass and mandolin, piano and percussion, set neatly on a bedrock of native and American influences, is a persuasive patina, one which has seen them compared to the likes of Mumford and Sons, Noah and The Whale, and The Low Anthem.

The band had shown their sublime instrumental mettle by backing John Grant on his award-winning 2010 solo debut Queen Of Denmark. This one-off concert celebrates the release of Midlake's fourth LP Antiphon on Bella Union. 12

This unique concert, compéred by Brian O’Donovan, presenter of the popular music show ‘Celtic Sojourn’ on WGBH, Boston, brings together some of the world’s finest players in a wonderful celebration of The Gathering to explore and interpret the musical legacy of their illustrious predecessors.

“Without the renaissance spearheaded by the Sligo musicians in the 1920s, we might very well not have the vibrant live tradition we have today.” Harry Bradshaw 14

Téada

The emigrant fiddlers of Sligo - Michael Coleman, James Morrison, and Paddy Killoran made the first popular recordings of Irish Traditional music in New York during the early twentieth century. These recordings brought Sligo’s vibrant traditional music style to millions, and when imported back to Ireland reinvigorated traditional music.

PETE MOLINARI BAND

THE JUNIOR FIDDLER OF DOONEY

and a host of Festival artistes

Fiddle competition for under 16s Sligo Live is again joining with CCÉ Sligo Town Branch to host the 'Fiddler of Dooney'. The first of two days of intense competition will see the under 16 fiddlers compete for the Junior Fiddler of Dooney title. The competition was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of the oldest and most prestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition. For more than a century there have been strong links between traditional music in Sligo and the U.S.A. To recognise and strengthen this bond, The Fiddler of Dooney brings an adjudicator over from America each year. Brian Conway, Winifred Horan, Tony De Marco Kevin Burke and Maurice Lennon have all filled the role and this year we are privileged to have Grammy nominated Chicago’s Liz Carroll, and former winner, Manus McGuire, judge the competition. Sligo Town Branch Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann

Pete Molinari sits at that point where, as Muddy Waters put it, the blues had a baby and they called it rock ‘n’ roll. Here soul, country, blues and rockabilly collide. The songs tell tales of life, love, literature and compact his musical influences and his globe-spanning, wandering lifestyle. Bruce Springsteen, when asked what he was listening to these days, said: "Pete Molinari - and if you don't know anything about him, he's great". Considering Pete's nomination as 'Best Newcomer' at UK rock magazine’s Mojo Awards, his appearance on Later With Jools Holland and the critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, it was never going to be too long before the man from New Jersey clocked the boy from Chatham.

Traditional Session Oisín Mac Diarmada, Paul Finn, Sean Gavin

This is a gig where two leading exponents of the Sligo style open a musical dialogue certain to be full of flash and fire, moderated by a well-grounded respect for tradition and source. Tony DeMarco and Seamie O’Dowd are two musicians from opposite sides of the Atlantic who have been nurtured in Sligo Style traditional music; Tony in New York where, despite his Italian forebears, he was drawn to the émigré Sligo fiddlers like Lad O’Beirne, Martin Wynne and Michael Gorman. Seamie learned from his parents, Joe and Sheila, fiddlers both from the heartland of South Sligo. Over the years they have participated in many sessions and stages and Seamie has guested on Tony’s album, 'The Sligo Indian'. Between them they are capable of producing enough electricity to fire up the national grid. One of the undoubted gems of the festival, and no mistake!

22

This session is anchored by three outstanding musicians, Sligo’s own Oisín Mac Diarmada from Téada on fiddle, his bandmate Paul Finn on Accordion and Detroit native Sean Gavin, a much admired flute player, who acknowledges a strong influence from Sligo flute legend, Kevin Henry, who also resides in his current home of Chicago.

This very special performance sees them play in the wonderfully atmospheric Calry Church. Anyone who was lucky enough to attend one of their sold out concerts at Vicar Street and the show-stealing performance at last year’s Electric Picnic will testify that their energy and amazing telepathic chemistry hasn’t waned. 26

North Carolina based Locust Honey String Band are Chloe, Ariel, and Meredith. They blend sweet harmonies with raging Old Time tunes using various combinations of fiddle, banjo, guitar, and bass. Chloe and Ariel have been playing music together since their early teenage years in Ashville, N.C.
