Demolition String Band With a shared passion for country, rock ‘n roll, bluegrass and mountain music, Elena Skye and Boo Reiners lead the New York based Americana group Demolition String Band. They thrill audiences with the passionate delivery of their original twangy songs mixed with traditional (Ola Belle Reed, Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams) and not-so-traditional (Madonna, Ramones, Rolling Stones) material.

Renegade Brass Band Renegade Brass Band have established a big live reputation as a headline act, and have played packed-out shows at venues around the UK and Europe. In the last year, they have appeared alongside acts including Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy, Xavier Rudd, The Apples, Quantic, Craig Charles, Rodney P & Skitz, Ms. Dynamite, DJ Shadow and DJ Yoda. A hit in festivals across Europe, the band released their debut album, RBB: Rhymes, Beats & Brass in July, which sees them further develop their hard-edged brass sound – combining raw brass funk with the vocals of MC V3xation and scratch DJ Zxodiac – as well as a series of remixes, including an appearance on The Herbaliser’s There Were Seven: Remixes album.

Junior Fiddler of Dooney Fiddle Competition for Under-16s Sligo Live and CCÉ Sligo Town Branch jointly host the ‘Fiddler of Dooney'. The first of two days of intense competition will see the under 16 fiddlers compete for the Junior Fiddler of Dooney title. The competition was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of the oldest and most prestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition. Winners have come from all over the country and from traditional musicians based overseas. Competitors need not be tied to any rigid formula or to play in a Sligo style, although Sligo Live celebrates the Sligo style with its infectious lift. For more than a century there have been strong links between traditional music in Sligo and the U.S.A. To recognise and strengthen this bond, The Fiddler of Dooney has an adjudicator with strong bonds to the tradition in America. Brian Conway, Winifred Horan, Tony De Marco, Liz Carroll, Kevin Burke and Maurice Lennon have all filled that role. This year we are privileged to have Jesse Smith, originally from Baltimore, Maryland, and now living in Dublin, joining former winner Maeve Donnelly in judging the competition. Bairbre Anne Bairbre Anne, a young and vibrant singer-songwriting talent from Dublin, has played in Ronnie Scott’s, London, Vicar Street, The Ruby Sessions, The Village and Crawdaddy. She has shared the stage with Paul Brady, The Coronas and James Vincent McMorrow and Wallis Bird. Bairbre Anne signed with UK Label/Publishers, My Hart Canyon.
The Cornerboys The six members of this Sligo outfit share a passion for bluegrass sessions and American music. They’ve got guitar, mandolin, harmonica, dobro, bass and drums and lots of vocals, and perform anything from honky tonk to blues stomp. Rackhouse Pilfer Riding on the back of their Nashville-recorded second album release, local six-piece Rackhouse Pilfer have been enthralling crowds across the country with their brand of rootsy Americana over the past 12 months. Critics describe the alt-country rockers as “a word of mouth phenomenon”, “a fiery and exciting new band” and “musically gifted”.
Cairóg Three top young traditional musicians from Sligo form Cairóg, and they are already turning heads with their stunning traditional and not-so-traditional arrangements. Michael Rooney & June McCormack Michael Rooney, from County Monaghan, and June McCormack live in June’s home village of Ballintogher, Co. Sligo. Both are outstanding musicians and combine active musical lives with teaching careers and caring for their young family. June won the senior flute competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann and the Young Traditional Musician of the Year award by TG4 in 1998. She has published two flute tutorial books.

Michael is widely regarded as one of the finest exponents of the Irish harp. He has composed eight suites of music, including Boróimhe, The De Cuellar Suite and The Battle of the Books. Joey Ryan Cork-based Joey Ryan Trio are one of that city’s most popular bands. Gigging regularly has built them a significant fan base. Their Sligo Live Arrivals performance comes just ahead of a November German tour. Their 2014 Silverwood Music EP features the single Stay Strong which raised funds and awareness for Breast Cancer Ireland.
Tom Terrell Canadian singer-songwriter Tom Terrell, from Nova Scotia, writes sings about real life: rambling, gambling and heartbreaking stories. Reminiscent of folk singers like John Prine and Tom Waits, Terrell's songs are full of humour and hurt. Worth checking out by anyone interested in unique, powerful and inventive songwriting and musicianship.

Traditional Session Shoots hosts another blockbuster session featuring Jesse Smith, Maeve Donnelly and Ciaran Curran. Baltimore MD native Jesse Smith, now based in Dublin, is one of the best-known trad fiddlers to emerge from the US. He learned his music from the great Brendan Mulvihill and is a former member of Danú. Clare's Maeve Donnelly is a winner of the Fiddler of Dooney and recognised as one of the very top fiddlers. Horslips plus special guests Moxie Horslips, the Irish supergroup which disbanded in 1980, before making comebacks in 2009 and 2011, are to please the crowds one more time when they explode onto the Knocknarea Arena stage at Sligo Live. The band that defined a generation, lit up Sligo Sounds 71 - Ireland’s first-ever rock festival. At that time nobody had seen an act like them, mixing prog rock with traditional music. They turned trad into rock! Fintan O’Toole described it well in the Irish Times: “Within a year, Horslips, extravagantly coiffed and dressed up like peacocks at a wedding, were tuning up their electric mandolins. Within another year, they were the biggest rock band yet seen in Ireland.”

Riptide Movement The last couple of years has seen The Riptide Movement make multiple incursions into the Irish top 10; gig their way from Dublin to Delhi with a stop-off in Glastonbury; take to the UK airwaves with all 50 of the BBC Concert Orchestra; collaborate with Jim Sheridan on an update of The Commitments; and, last summer, support The Rolling Stones at their Hyde Park homecoming. “Never in a million years did we think that we would be opening for the Stones,” says singer and guitarist Mal Tuohy Mal and his bandmates Jay Dalton (guitar), Gerry McGarry (bass & harmonica) and Gar Byrne (drums & piano) got together in 2006 through their mutual love of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Bryan Adams, Rory Gallagher and, of course, their new mates Mick ’n’ Keef.

Senior Fiddler of Dooney Fiddle Competition Sligo Live and CCE Sligo Town Branch co-host the Fiddler of Dooney Competition inspired by the W B Yeats poem of the same name. The competition was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of the oldest and most prestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition. The roll of previous winners reads like a Who’s Who of traditional fiddling and includes Matt Cranitch, Cathal Hayden, Liz Kane, Paddy Glacken, Bríd Harper, Antóin MacGabhann and Seamus and Manus Maguire. Since Sligo Live and CCE first hosted the competition, the winners have been Tara Breen 2006, Laura Beagon 2007, Bronwyn Power 2008, Aoife Ní Bhrion COMPETITION 2009, Rhona Lynch 2010, Niall Murphy 2011, Lucia McPartlin 2012 and last year’s winner, Lydia Warnock from Methodist Church Kinlough, Co. Leitrim. The standard of playing is a joy to behold. Winners have come from all over the country and Wine Street, Sligo from among traditional musicians based overseas. (opposite Gaiety Cinema) Competitors need not be tied to any rigid formula or to play in a Sligo style, although Sligo Live celebrates the 2pm Sligo style with its infectious lilt. The Barr Brothers are a band exploring the far reaches of folk, laced with West African influences, hypnotic modernist pulsing and beyond. Rackhouse Pilfer The rise of Rackhouse Pilfer is unstoppable. They are a stomping, fiery and exciting band and have been getting rave reviews with their brand of rootsy Americana. Traditional Session This wrap up session is anchored by three of Sligo’s own All-Ireland winner Carmel Gunning on tin whistle and flute, Daithí Gormley on box and Junior Davey on bodhrán. In addition to their playing exploits, Carmel and Junior are internationally-known music teachers and Daithí has an encyclopedic knowledge of Sligo music. This is where all the festival crew and many of the artistes go to wind down after a hectic weekend, so this trio are sure to be joined by many more musicians.
