WELCOME Welcome to the tenth Sligo Live, Folk, Roots and Indie festival, in Ireland’s music hub. We hope you will enjoy the huge variety of music on offer and perhaps even find the time to explore some of the many and varied other attractions of Sligo and the Wild Atlantic Way. Sligo Live Festival is a not-for-profit festival and has the support of investment from its public and private partners. It is made possible by this community effort and the input from the host of volunteers you will meet as you go from event to event. We would like to thank all of them and particularly our major investors Failte Ireland and Sligo County Council. We also urge you to support our sponsors and partners listed below and throughout the booklet. Finally, if you like what you see, please spread the word – our research tells us that word-of-mouth recommendation is the major factor in encouraging people to visit Sligo Live. Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann & Sligo Live

Junior Fiddler of Dooney Fiddle Competition for Under-16s Sligo Live and CCÉ Sligo Town Branch jointly host the ‘Fiddler of Dooney'. The first of two days of intense competition will see the under 16 fiddlers compete for the Junior Fiddler of Dooney title. The competition was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of the oldest and most prestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition. Winners have come from all over the country and from traditional musicians based overseas. Competitors need not be tied to any rigid formula or to play in a Sligo style, although Sligo Live celebrates the Sligo style with its infectious lift. For more than a century there have been strong links between traditional music in Sligo and the U.S.A. To recognise and strengthen this bond, The Fiddler of Dooney has an adjudicator with strong bonds to the tradition in America. Brian Conway, Winifred Horan, Tony De Marco, Liz Carroll, Kevin Burke and Maurice Lennon have all filled that role. This year we are privileged to have Jesse Smith, originally from Baltimore, Maryland, and now living in Dublin, joining former winner Maeve Donnelly in judging the competition. They turned trad into rock! Fintan O’Toole described it well in the Irish Times: “Within a year, Horslips, extravagantly coiffed and dressed up like peacocks at a wedding, were tuning up their electric mandolins. Within another year, they were the biggest rock band yet seen in Ireland.”
