why e-portfolios? Research shows the benefits of student created portfolios. ePortfolios can benefit students in several ways. According to A Review Of The Literature On Portfolios And Electronic Portfolios (Oct. 2006), ePortfolios help to focus student thinking (Wade & Yarbrough, 1996), provide a means to translate theory into practice (Hauge, 2006), and most importantly, document a learner’s progress over time (Abrami & Barrett, 2005). Through the process of portfolio construction, students gain a broader sense of what they are learning (Young, 2002). They can see their learning unfolding (Darling, 2001), acquire an awareness of their accomplishments and come to understand how their learning takes place (Brown, 2002).

ePortfolios The purpose of ePortfolios is to house artifacts as evidence of curriculum and technology (ISTE) standards. Several kinds of evidence can/will be used including writing samples, videos, podcasts, Glogs, multimedia presentations and reflections. References: Abrami, P. C., & Barrett, H. (2005). Parents, Your student will soon be creating an ePortfolio for this course. Although most students have a Facebook or MySpace page, the rule of thumb for the ePortfolio is no three (3) identifying factors! i.e. only school name and first name/last initial used for identification. No personal pictures.

Contact information can not be provided. Students will use avatars instead of personal photos. All students will be asked to select the “Protected” privacy feature. Note: If students choose to continue adding artifacts to their portfolios after this course, with parent permission, they may add additional information or change privacy settings as colleges often request to see portfolios. Please be advised that the ePortfolio will no longer be used, viewed, or graded by the teacher and it is up to the student to use the ePortfolio in a productive and appropriate manner. The

student does have the option to delete the account at the end of this course. I encourage students to select the “Protected” or “Private” feature when creating the ePortfolio for this course. The teacher must be invited to view the portfolio for grading purposes. (Parents must also receive an “invite” from the student if the privacy feature is selected.) ePortfolio addresses will be posted to Blackboard for parents to view. I hope you enjoy seeing your child’s exemplary work! Please sign the Parent Consent Form on the next page and have your student return the form by the following school day. Thank you!
