Inspiring excellence in digital print

The Monthly Corporate Newsletter of Intec Print Solutions

Stealing the Show! Intec made a big impression at the ‘Gulf Print and Pack’ show… Held at the Dubai World Trade Centre between 13-16 April, the Altech stand continued to draw huge crowds to the Intec range, on each of the show’s four days.

Intec making a big impression in Dubai - well, if you can believe our cheeky art department!

The print industry continues to evolve and grow in the Middle East and Africa.

Advances in print machinery and materials are creating opportunities for business growth. With the success of the Sign and Graphic exhibition in this region only 2 months ago (January), and unprecedented growth in demand for Intec products, Intec Printing Solutions chose to support Gulf Print and Pack 2015. The Gulf Print and Pack show runs every 2 years and is regarded as the leading event for commercial and package printers in the Middle East and North Africa.

from over 100 countries, Gulf Print and Pack 2015 proved the ideal place for Intec to meet key decision makers and help dealers in the local areas to generate new business leads and expand further into global markets. (Continued overleaf…)

See Page 9 for a Great Deal

Covering four-days this exhibition featured the latest digital presses, package printing technology, and web-to-print software solutions for printing professionals, buyers, and design agencies, and so was obviously the right place for Intec to show off its new range of 5 color digital print solutions, and the Intec LP215 label printer, with the companion label cutter – the ultimate combination for perfect short-run digital labels.

Attendance going up!

Attendance was significantly up compared to 2013’s (last Gulf Print) show. With well over 10,000 visitors

Gulf Print & Pack …Continued Intec in partnership with Altech International and Premier Graphics, showcased the: • ColorSplash 5000 range, running and demonstrating both white and clear additional colors • Intec High Volume Envelope Feeder • Intec LP215 Label Printer and Intec LCF215, Label Cutter and Finisher for digital label finishing In addition Aldana (Intec’s Dubai partner for the CP3000 range) showcased the Intec CP3000. During the show, the full range of products that can be printed from Intec printers, were imaged and handed out. High speed envelope printing was demonstrated using a multitude of different colored premium envelopes, with white print.

Delegates were often queuing several deep to get a first-hand look at the Intec equipment!

Clear toner was used to over-print samples - ideal for highlighting high quality print products. This just shows how exciting the new ColorSplash solutions are for all manner of print including 1,200mm long banners, for use in Point-of-Sale applications were displayed with the POD, display stand (pictured opposite). Customer sample files for a range of labels, were produced live on the stand. The labels were cut and finished onto smaller rolls, and even some laminated for that premium gloss finish - most impressive stuff!

Hard to see the Intec equipment as we were three-deep all the time - and the most popular stand

A presentation by Our 2015 Charity As previously published, Intec Printing Solutions is supporting the charity, ‘International Needs’ in their quest to build a maternity hospital in Burkina Faso, west Africa. On 22nd April, the charity’s top brass came to our UK headquarters to present an overview of their work to our workforce. Keep updated here: http://www.intecprinters.com/aboutintec/making-a-difference/ James Townsend and Danny Morris of ‘International Needs’, being greeted by Ian Melville

Charity and sponsors, both doing well…

Following significant commitment from Intec, the future prospects of the proposed Maternity Hospital project are looking very rosy. International Needs’ National Manager, Danny Morris, said; “Your support has been really encouraging. We should be in the position to start laying bricks by the end of 2015.”

A few facts:

• Burkina Faso is a land-locked, arid country with average temp 35°C • Population 17 million • 45% population under 14 yrs • High infant mortality - 77 out of every 1000 babies die • 35% of under 5’s malnourished • Only 1 doctor every 10,000 people Ian Melville and the entire Intec UK team found the presentation very informative and thought-provoking. “We are delighted that a percentage of every Intec consumable purchased provides funding directly to this worthy cause. We recently received a most heartening update from the charity, which is now available to view on our website” said Ian.

Master Class #3.1 Continuing our ‘Master Class’ series, to help you get the very best from your Intec equipment, this is part one of an in-depth three part series on ‘Advanced Color Control’. Intec printers and the Fiery® RIP One of the key features which makes the Intec version of the Fiery RIP so very different from other RIPs, is that it comes pre-loaded with 64 profiles - developed to help you achieve great results.

Grasp the fundamentals of advanced color management and take full control of your digital print output! Advanced Color Control is an elaborate subject, which we feel is essential for serious print professionals to master.

This complex subject is best broken down into a number of bite-sized pieces - so to help unpack the principles and benefits, we’ll spread these topics across the next few issues. Throughout the series, we will look at; • the key settings for optimising your system correctly for best color output • understanding how to use the RIP to translate specific desired outputs • dealing with spot colors and custom colors • the importance of calibration and profiling • using a color spectrophotomer and how the RIP can help us Plus, we have a few other tips and tricks to help you! In this issue we’ll cover: 1 Importance of the Intec Fiery RIP

1: The Fiery XF for Intec RIP

As many know, Intec has partnered with EFi over recent years to develop an extremely sophisticated version of their industry-standard RIP. This now ships as standard with all Intec Fiery RIP purchases. Among its prime features, are the 64 preloaded profiles which are specifically developed to meet a wide range of artwork/media/output requirements, coupled with numerous other options, features and controls, this RIP is very powerful and is the key to total control of your digital print workflow.

2: M atching your system equipment to the RIP

Today’s graphics applications are quite advanced, with many color controls. Your settings correspond to a specific standard printing condition which we often refer to as ‘the industry standard for color’. Data sets are provided by industry associations and based on experience of printing inks, papers and presses in their market; ‘FOGRA39 ISOcoated_v2_300_eci’ is widely used in Europe – but in North America, either the ‘GraCol2013_CRPC6’ or the ‘CGATS21-2-CRPC6’ might be more common.

Unfortunately, many users don’t change the default settings on their applications, but to ensure a fighting chance of great color coming out of your printer, you must ensure the settings in your graphic applications on your computers (fig 1) MATCH your Intec Fiery (also known as your Digital Front End (DFE)) color settings.

Master Class #3.1…Continued 3: Calibrate your printer for consistent output

fig 2

To get the best tonal range from your printed output, it is important to calibrate your printer. When doing this you are essentially setting it up for optimum toner/color distribution on paper. Calibration ensures linear progression of the ink tints from 100% to 1% without a tonal distortion. Calibration also ensures you are getting the best color saturation for vivid color prints. NB: Because each paper accepts toner color differently, we advise that you create a separate calibration for each paper/media type you use. Frequently the highlight dots need to be fine tuned to show highlight detail, and the shadow areas need to be addressed to expand the tonal range from your printer. An example of what an uncalibrated scale can look like vs a calibrated one is shown to the right fig 2. Changes in print settings, media thickness and even subtle variations in paper or the environment can also influence the color; i.e. 80gsm copier paper with optical brighteners, make yellow look different in densities compared to 350gsm ivory board. In essence, calibration is a ‘hardware’ thing, where the printer controls are adjusted to get as close as possible to a desired linear output.

Bottom scale calibrated vs uncalibrated above

that describe the gamut (a three dimensional map of the printable colors – fig 3) from a specific printer’s paper and toner combination. Put more simply, profiling creates a lookup table which can be used to translate ‘what you asked for’ into what it needs, to give you ‘what you wanted in the first place’. So a profile can address any differences in how color is mixed or reproduced between different devices, such as those using dry toner versus an offset press using wet ink. fig 3 When created and used properly, a

4: Profiling

Profiling is different to calibrating, having calibrated our printer we can consistently produce the same output but it doesn’t mean that the color is accurate. RGB colors on a computer screen look different to CMYK colors on a printing press, wet ink from CMYK on a printing press looks different when mixed, compared to dry toner on a Xerographic device. So, the same color percentages on each device can make color look different. The settings you started with, tell your RIP what device or standard (Forgra/ISO or GraCol) you want your colors to look like. Printer profiles are small files

3D colormap

linearized printer with printer profiles can help you achieve far more accurate and consistent results.

Intec helps get you started

Most RIPs (even the standard Fiery offering) assumes the user will calibrate their system. One of the key features which makes

the Intec version of the Fiery RIP very different from the other RIPs is that you don’t have to make your own profiles to get great results. Intec understands, that color management, calibration and profiling is an advanced skill which can be confusing and many printers simply want to ‘hit the road running’ with the best possible output but don’t have the time or resources to individually profile or set up every paper type and every condition in their printing process. The good news is, Intec have prebuilt over 64 different linearization and profile combinations based on a range of common paper types, thicknesses and even different printer settings/resolutions which are preinstalled and setup up in the Intec Fiery XF RIP station to give you a great head start! The profiles included in the Intec RIP range include profiles for papers like 55gsm NCR stocks, super bright white papers such as Mondi Color Copy, the common business card stock Ivory Board, packaging boards like PromoBoard and even all the way up to heavy stocks including 450gsm TruCard. Intec has spent a great deal of time testing a broad range of typical and speciality media types to establish the
