EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be better prepared to: • Discuss attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) pathology and consequences of inadequate treatment across various age groups • Operationalize the latest diagnostic and treatment guidelines for ADHD, including recommendations from the DSM-5 and the American Academy of Pediatrics
• Tailor treatment plans for patients with ADHD based on clinical presentation, comorbid conditions, risk stratification for medication abuse, and patient preferences • Educate patients and family members about ADHD medication profiles, behavioral treatments, and therapeutic adherence
PREAMBLE
• Differentiate among various stimulant and nonstimulant medications for ADHD in terms of efficacy, safety, abuse potential, and effects on comorbidities
INTENDED AUDIENCE This activity is intended for primary care providers (PCPs) involved in the diagnosis and management of patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). There are no prerequisites for this educational activity.
NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND LEARNER’S GAP This Best Practices in Primary Care™ program will foster collaborative exchange among expert faculty regarding the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. ADHD is a serious public health concern, affecting 3% to 9% of children and approximately 4% of adults.1,2 Over time, core ADHD-associated difficulties in executive function cause a range of medical, social, and economic difficulties based on patient-specific biologic, psychological, and environmental risk factors.3,4 During this 60-minute educational activity, two expert faculty will conduct an interactive, case-based discussion that focuses on ADHD pathology, updates to diagnostic recommendations from national clinical practice guidelines, and reviews of how various drug classes should be integrated into multimodal treatment plans. Faculty will also review risk stratification and alternative treatment strategies that can minimize harm to patients and the public when potentially abusable medications are considered for ADHD management. At the close of the program, a focused question-and-answer session will encourage audience members to further explore key issues and real-world patient challenges with the faculty experts.
