This spirit of hospitality is translated into the Shaza Makkah Hotel, located nearby the Great Mosque of Al Masjid Al Haram in the new district of Jabal Al Kaaba. Being at the heart of the city, the design concept embodies both a visual connection with the Holy Site as well as the pause and rest required after a busy day of pilgrimage. Hotel Grand Millennium Madinah Location: Madinah, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Year: 2015 Status: Design Program: Hotel

Following the operator’s philosophy of lavishing guests with a five-star stay and service, the Hotel Grand Millennium Madinah portrays this luxurious experience combined with the fact that the city of Madinah is a major pilgrimage site, as it stands as the second holiest place in Islam. Thus, a welcoming reception is highlighted together with the reinterpretation of local attributes through the design and materials. The lobby exemplifies both concepts. The use of gold and golden hues set the tone, and it’s hard not to admire the impressive lattice work behind the reception desks or the grandeur of the staircase. Other common spaces like the restaurant employ features like a glass curtain tinted in red tones, a perfect envelope for the food buffet, as well as the wood lattices which divide yet provide openness for dinners to not feel enclosed in the space. Side windows and a skylight supply with enough light without interfering with the atmosphere.

Marriott Hotel Dammam

Location: Dammam, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Year: 2015 Status: Construction Program: Four Stars Hotel The architecture of the building is characterized by a strong geometry which is ought to be replicated in the interior design proposal. This is mainly present in the use of lattices which outline a contemporary take on Arab patterns which frame the reception area all across the space. Another great source of inspiration is the desert, replicated in the warm, sand-like hues present all along the hotel, which mellow the rigor of the geometric lines and emphasize elements like the furniture, patterns in the flooring and ceilings.

Lobby

The rooms tone down the proposal slightly, introducing neutral hues in combination with light wood elements which, in addition to the natural light filtered through the windows, result in extremely homely and hospitable spaces. The motifs on the rugs and decorative lamps carry on the geometrical narrative to add visual interest in a room designed for resting but also to be used as a living area or work space. The choice of natural materials like wood and stone add, together with the warm palette, the sensation of spaciousness, brightness and intimacy. Other decorative elements like pendant lights or patterns in the carpets across the corridors and lift lobby create an interesting contrast thanks to their organic shapes. The program of the mall includes the interior design development for all public spaces inside the mall: circulation spaces, food courts, prayer room, public toilets and administration offices. This notion allows to create a unique interior space based on the beauty of the context where the development is located. The north side of the mall accentuates the connection to Reem Island Bridge through the sharp angles which join the different levels, creating a dynamic effect which is highlighted by the patterned glass ceiling. The south side overlaps volumes by dividing the space into individual crystals which orientate visitors through the interconnected spaces. This transition is overlapped, reinforced by layers of paving patterns and materials. The Mangrove Atrium, the heart of the mall, is the largest open space, programmed to host different events and acts as the main access point from the parking levels situated above ground. On the top floor, the Mangrove Food Court evoques the mangrove forest with patterned columns in shades of green and blue which emerge like trees, with two skylines that fill the space with natural light.

Colibri Gastromarket

Location: Almaty, Kazakhstan Year: 2015 Status: Completed Program: Supermarket

A boutique mall dedicated to cater high-quality home appliances and a food and drinks supermarket comprised of several spaces, with a high-standard selection of products and brands unique to Kazakhstan. The interior design proposal for the grocery store is based around providing a better shopping experience for customers and let the gastronomic selection speak for itself, highlighting the gourmet qualities of the products sold in the market in a modern appearance and a neutral palette.

Counter Area

The Colibri brand was seeking for a cozy, friendly and familyoriented atmosphere for their clients, something which the interior design achieves by applying a comprehensive and coherent layout to this large space, where all the regional and international products are clearly on display in a fuss-free ambience which sets this gourmet market apart from the traditional supermarket design. Wood, white ceramic tiles and stone are the main materials employed to exhibit the colorful array of products in a clean, minimalistic way, with interesting details like latticed woodwork in the ceiling. Spaciousness is another key feature of the supermarket, and an industrial feel has been applied by exposing pipes and ventilation units. The space is comprehensively divided into different sections which lack of physical divisions to make the shopping experience a practical and most importantly, a pleasurable one. Backery

Located in the heart of Sharjah, it acts as a focal point for shopping, meeting and relaxing. The interior design is inspired by the beauty, colors and textures of the desert, applied in a way that the new spaces are understood as a continuity of the existing Sahara Mall, which represented a design challenge from the beginning. The program includes the interior design of all public spaces inside the New West Extension and for the transition areas: mall corridors, public toilets, lift lobbies, prayer rooms and the clinics module which has a separate entrance.

The Transition Zone links both developments. This bridge welcomes and guides visitors to the new expansion and has the same spirit as the existing mall. A warm and dynamic atmosphere is achieved, with inspirational elements like the desert references present in the fine dining area which provide a cozy space by combining warm textures, palm tree shapes and a touch of bright colors with natural light coming from the roof skylight. Dark piers with colored lights are used to frame each unit and generate rhythm in the path to the new west aisle. Dynamic corridors provide access to the main atrium, which is the heart of the extension area and a vibrant space for shoppers to meet and immerse themselves in the retail experience naturally illuminated by a central skylight.

Fly Dubai Headquarters

Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates Year: 2016 Status: Detail Design Program: Offices

The new Fly Dubai headquarters will provide a new 20,000m2 home on Emirates Road and allow the company to incorporate a series of facilities like training and sport grounds, a medical clinic, a selection of restaurants and enough office space to meet the airline’s operational needs. Making use of the latest designs and innovations available in the construction industry, the key factor is to provide a sustainable working environment for all employees, as all teams will be now united under the same roof. The program includes the interior design of the main entrance, lounge, reception, lift lobbies and corridors, food courts, restaurants, prayer rooms, staff clinic, gym, indoor games, VIP lounge, meeting rooms, offices, government center, employee center, library, training center with classrooms, administration and public toilets. The concept for the design of the headquarters takes inspiration from the country’s natural surroundings and geology; the desert life and the continuous search for the oasis as a way of finding a breathing space from the harshness of the environment. This metaphor is reinterpreted through the beauty of the dunes by replicating the natural colors of sand and pastel blue tones. This choice of palettes, together with the use of locally-found greenery, create surprising zones which replicate the joyfulness of finding the longing oasis. Local patterns are also replicated under a contemporary design language, which together with the geometrically-shaped lamps and rugs, reference the ambition of the airline to grow in a domestic and international scale.

Basra Cultural Palace

Location: Basra, Iraq Year: 2014 Status: Competition Program: Cultural center

The new headquarters of the Basra Governorate occupy an extension of 20,868m2. Aside office and administration areas, the design also contemplates a multifunctional program, as the Governorate wants to host different cultural events and festivals taking place in the Iraqi city. Therefore, other spaces like exhibitions areas, conference and cinema halls, a theatre, broadcasting department and large areas with greenery have been included in the proposed design. The brief for the competition also asked for a concept which reflected the heritage and culture of the city, so this is the main design narrative followed in the interior.

Library

Given the extension of the building, one key issue was to fill the massive spaces with natural light. This is achieved through the diagonal-shaped openings in the facade, which resemble dots in Arabic Calligraphy, and allow plenty of light to enter the space. This is mimicked by the light-toned wood handrails which are designed with a similar zig-zag to those of the openings. This calligraphic reference is a remark about the position the city enjoyed as a great centre of learning and theology at the beginning of its history. As the program includes the organization of several events, the interior design bares in mind the inclusion of the latest in sound and lighting technology for the festivals and exhibitions taking place in the building. It also and conforms to contemporary architectural codes of design, efficiency, sustainability, safety and security.

Mayta DIFC Restaurant

Location: Dubai, UAE Year: 2015 Status: Completed Program: Bar & Restaurant

Mayta is a Peruvian restaurant which reinvents traditional recipes from the South American country by applying modern techniques. This transgressive approach is replicated in the concept developed for the interiorism, with different areas which have been designed to fulfill all the experiences offered in the eatery which is also a cocktail bar. Therefore, different design needs were required to cater and attract a diverse typology of clients. The Peruvian flair is achieved with the patterned tiles which replicate traditional motifs in an array of colors and with a contemporary touch, as well as with other decorative elements reminiscent of the country. Wood is the dominating material, and together with the greenery scattered around the space, it recreates a tropical atmosphere in Dubai’s Capital Club, the city’s premier private business club. The space is divided in several areas, each with a unique atmosphere which reinterprets the Peruvian culture in a design language which modernizes folkloric references: the bar, with the signature ceramic tiles; a ceviche bar, with comfortable armchairs and tables to enhance intimate conversations while enjoying one of Mayta’s specialities and Peru’s most popular dish; a lunch area with differentlsized wooden tables to cater for both small and big groups in a dim lighting; and the central kitchen where all the action takes place.

Hola, La Mer Jumeirah Open Beach Restaurant Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates Year: 2016 Status: Completed Program: Restaurant

Hola, meaning Hello in Spanish, is located in the beachfront of the coastline of Dubai. It embodies the concept of “Latin America meets the United Arab Emirates.” Inspired by the owners’ travels around South America and their passion for the gastronomy of that region, the design translates this idea into a colorful, spicy, bright, joyful and fun beach café. The beach area is enhanced with boardwalks, freestanding retail shops, food & beverage tenancies and the surrounding landscape. The menu, composed by exotic, fresh fruit-based treats, is equally matched by the vibrant design. All the elements are designed with a bespoke attention to detail. From the designs of the colorful, patterned ceramic tiles to the weaved-like lights. The interior is a bold demonstration of how different, yet planned disposition of varied textures across the space complements the gastronomic offer in a contemporary manner. All the elements play a key role and all materials are there for a purpose. The reclaimed timber wood used in the floor and the ceiling connects the restaurant with the seafront and depicts a modern take on rusticity. The steelwork and big glass doors and window frames the place to mimic the style of the cafes and bars found in the Spanish coastline, which also symbolizes an open invitation to come in and enjoy a holiday-like atmosphere.

New Cairo German School

Location: Cairo, Egypt Year: 2014 Status: Completed Program: Educational

The New Cairo German School is integrated in the Town Center of the New Cairo Masterplan, a green city located on the southeast edge of the Cairo Governorate. The school is divided in two buildings, each with a specific program. The first one hosts a kindergarten, and the second, which is the main building, the Primary, Secondary and High Schools. The new facilities have been designed to meet modern standards which encourage a positive impact on the academic and social life of the students. To achieve this, luminosity prevails in both buildings, as the abundance of light has demonstrated to improve performance and concentration. A lightness in the use of furniture also benefits the overall conduct and wellbeing. All these furnishings have been chosen because of their durability and ergonomic qualities, suited to be used as seats for several hours and resistant to long term wear and tear.

Cafeteria

The design of the common areas as the library, the reception and the cafeteria has a modern, clean and fresh interior design, far away from the standard design often seen in schools centers, which aims to treat students like the adults they will become once they finish their education. Wooden panelling in the ceilings and carpets improve the acoustics, and the use of local plants the quality of the air. Reception

Qatar Chamber of Commerce

Maroon -the color of the country’s national flag- golden and neutral hues have a strong presence here to set the mood in a grandiloquent, open space. 5th Floor

Arab patterns are found throughout. Wooden lattices in the main lobby span a few meters up to provide a decorative box complemented by the geometries on the stone floor and the jewelry-like pendant lights. The Majlis, a space for reunion and debate, is arranged around a circular ceiling which is the source of illumination, originated by sculptural-shaped lights which descend from the geometrical ceiling. Around it, more local motifs add to the decoration which are also present in the floor, creating a sense of mirror reflection. The offices feature richly decorated carpets, several wooden partitions to host meeting rooms as well as waiting areas with sofas.
