The Holy City of Makkah has been a pilgrimage destination for hundreds of years, therefore, a welcoming place for travellers and pilgrims. This spirit of hospitality is translated into the Shaza Makkah Hotel, located nearby the Great Mosque of Al Masjid Al Haram in the new district of Jabal Al Kaaba. Being at the heart of the city, the design concept embodies both a visual connection with the Holy Site as well as the pause and rest required after a busy day of pilgrimage. Hotel Grand Millennium Madinah Location: Madinah, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Year: 2015 Status: Design Program: Hotel
Following the operator’s philosophy of lavishing guests with a five-star stay and service, the Hotel Grand Millennium Madinah portrays this luxurious experience combined with the fact that the city of Madinah is a major pilgrimage site, as it stands as the second holiest place in Islam. Thus, a welcoming reception is highlighted together with the reinterpretation of local attributes through the design and materials. The lobby exemplifies both concepts. The use of gold and golden hues set the tone, and it’s hard not to admire the impressive lattice work behind the reception desks or the grandeur of the staircase. Other common spaces like the restaurant employ features like a glass curtain tinted in red tones, a perfect envelope for the food buffet, as well as the wood lattices which divide yet provide openness for dinners to not feel enclosed in the space. Side windows and a skylight supply with enough light without interfering with the atmosphere.

The rooms take the concept of luxury even further to dispense a wonderful rest, both in the Standard and Presidential bedrooms. Following this bucolic narrative, the interior design concept is developed around a relaxed and discreet luxury which maximizes the characteristics of the property and the nearby forest landscape. Original wood beams have been restored and shine as a natural addition to the bedrooms. A similar effect is achieved by maximizing the shapes of the attic, which create a personal, distinct and intimate space. Marriott Hotel Dammam
Location: Dammam, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Year: 2015 Status: Construction Program: Four Stars Hotel The architecture of the building is characterized by a strong geometry which is ought to be replicated in the interior design proposal. This is mainly present in the use of lattices which outline a contemporary take on Arab patterns which frame the reception area all across the space. Another great source of inspiration is the desert, replicated in the warm, sand-like hues present all along the hotel, which mellow the rigor of the geometric lines and emphasize elements like the furniture, patterns in the flooring and ceilings.
Lobby
The rooms tone down the proposal slightly, introducing neutral hues in combination with light wood elements which, in addition to the natural light filtered through the windows, result in extremely homely and hospitable spaces. The motifs on the rugs and decorative lamps carry on the geometrical narrative to add visual interest in a room designed for resting but also to be used as a living area or work space. The choice of natural materials like wood and stone add, together with the warm palette, the sensation of spaciousness, brightness and intimacy. Other decorative elements like pendant lights or patterns in the carpets across the corridors and lift lobby create an interesting contrast thanks to their organic shapes. The main lobby is conceived like a cosmopolitan and modern space highlighted by a double-storey height and organized by modular elements. The whole space is designed with simple lines and natural colours, with some local element references that give the Hotel an identity and make the difference between this hotel and others from the same brand. The bedroom feels like a bright quiet space, with some splashes of strong graphic elements that give to the room a design statement and a local identity. The restaurant is one of the social meeting spaces. It is about an open space, the use of natural colours and materials, an elegant yet casual and modern atmosphere. The space is connected to the exterior through the outdoor terrace.
