Отелю InterContinental Kiev 2012 год подарил свежую волну вдохновения в лице четырех новоназначенных директоров. Уникальный творческий подход и профессионализм в наш департамент по управлению персоналом привнесла Ирина Зинченко, которая также возглавляет HR-комитет клуба отельеров и рестораторов Hoteliero. На очень важную должность финансового директора отеля был приглашен Бруно Сикод, обладатель почетного титула Global Financial Hero 2008 года, который работает в сети IHG с 1988 года. Недавно на должность руководителя ресторанной службы отеля был назначен г-н Лиор Бебера, вдохновляющий сотрудников на новые свершения. Тайс Ван Рун занял должность шеф-повара наших трех ресторанов. Дружная команда InterContinental Kiev с большой радостью приняла в свои ряды новых сотрудников. 2012 год также подарил нам новое партнерство. Не так давно был подписан Меморандум с ЮНИСЕФ о сотрудничестве и взаимной поддержке в сфере защиты прав детей. Кроме этого, во время проведения чемпионата Евро-2012 было установлено партнерство с УЕФА, благодаря которому в отеле в качестве почетных гостей побывали много замечательных людей. В уходящем году мы получили важное признание наших заслуг от Киевской городской администрации за работу, проделанную в рамках проведения Евро-2012, а также были удостоены награды организации International Hotel Awards в Лондоне как «Лучший отель Украины». Провожая этот важный и насыщенный год, мы искренне благодарим всех наших гостей за то, что они были с нами, а также наших сотрудников — за те успехи, которых мы достигли вместе. As 2012 draws to a close we look back on a year filled with new friends, partnerships and achievements. First let me report on the new bustle of energy at InterContinental Kiev, owed to the arrival of four new directors. Heading our impeccable Human Resources team with creativity and professionalism is Irina Zinchenko, who also finds time to head the HR committee of the Hoteliero Association. In the essential seat of Financial Director is Bruno Sicaud, who joined IHG on the 8th of August, 1988 and was named 2008’s ‘Global Financial Hero’. Our Food and Beverage department is now headed by Mr. Lior Bebera, who oversees and motivates catering teams throughout the hotel with consummate professionalism. Thijs van Rhoon, our new Executive Chef, handles the task of overseeing our three restaurants with a finesse and positive attitude that are a true asset to the hotel. It has been a pleasure to welcome them to InterContinental Kiev. This year has also seen two major partnerships for us at the hotel. Firstly, the recently signed Memorandum with UNICEF, which will see cooperation and support for the promotion of children’s rights over the coming months, and, secondly, the UEFA partnership for EURO-2012 which saw many jovial guests using the hotel which created an exceptional atmosphere. Finally, this year we were honoured to receive two exceptional commendations, the first from Kiev City Administration for our services during EURO-2012 and the second at the International Hotel Awards in London, the coveted fifth star we received along with the title ‘Best Hotel Ukraine’. С 17 по 23 сентября 2012 года отели сети InterContinental Hotels & Resorts провели Неделю ответственного бизнеса — программу мероприятий по защите и сохранению уникальных объектов природного и культурного наследия.

Between September 17 and 23, 2012 InterContinental Hotels & Resorts held the Responsible Business Week a program of events to protect and preserve unique natural and cultural heritage sites.

Тема Недели ответственного бизнеса 2012 родилась из стремления поддержать ту помощь, которую National Geographic оказывает Всемирному наследию ЮНЕСКО, а также из инициативы движения экологического туризма «Люди в защиту мест». Во время проведения Недели отели InterContinental приглашают к участию в реализации миссии ЮНЕСКО по защите и сохранению уникальных природных и культурных объектов, находящихся в той же местности, где расположены отели. В 2012 году исполняется 40 лет со дня принятия Конвенции об охране всемирного культурного и природного наследия, и поэтому в рамках проведения Недели ответственного бизнеса особое внимание уделяется связи Всемирного наследия с концепцией устойчивого развития, и в особенности той роли, которую в этой концепции играют местные сообщества. «Отели играют важную роль в жизни людей по всему миру. Мы очень рады, что InterContinental Hotels & Resorts уже третий год подряд берет на себя обязательства по поддержке местных объектов наследия в рамках проведения Недели ответственного бизнеса, и искренне надеемся на продолжение сотрудничества по сохранению объектов Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО и в дальнейшем», — говорит Кимберли Коннаган, вице-президент National Geographic Global Media, Travel и издатель журнала National Geographic Traveler. В течение двух прошедших лет отель InterContinental Kiev был одним из самых активных и инициативных участников Недели ответственного бизнеса. В этом году каждый отдел внес в мероприятие свою лепту, придумывая разнообразные интересные идеи с целью вовлечь в процесс местное сообщество и воздать должное Всемирному наследию ЮНЕСКО. В частности, отдел продаж и маркетинга отеля организовал для сотрудников поездку в древний город Чернигов, чтобы познакомить их с выдающимися памятниками культурного наследия Украины, находящимися за пределами столицы. Административно-хозяйственный и технический отделы, а также отдел безопасности решили продолжить начинания предыдущих двух лет, помогая местному дому престарелых с текущим техническим обслуживанием и даря подарки его обитателям.

The idea of the Responsible Business Week 2012 was conceived following the intention to support the initiatives that National Geographic carries out to help the UNESCO World Heritage Center as well as the initiatives of the People In Defense Of Places ecotourism movement. During the Week InterContinental Hotels are invited to participate in the realization of the UNESCO mission of protecting and preserving unique local natural and cultural heritage objects. 2012 marks the 40 th anniversary of the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage adoption. That is why, as part of the Responsible Business Week, special attention was given to the connection between World Heritage and the concept of sustainable development and the part that the local community plays in this concept in particular. “Hotels play an important role in local communities worldwide. We are very glad that InterContinental Hotels & Resorts has pledged to support local heritage objects as part of the Responsible Business Week three years in a row, and we sincerely hope to continue our cooperation on preserving UNESCO World Heritage objects”, said Kimberly Connagan, Vice-President of National Geographic Global Media, Travel, and National Geographic Traveler magazine publisher. For the last two years InterContinental Kyiv has been one of the most active and proactive par ticipants of the Responsible Business Week. This year every depar tment contributed towards the initiative by developing various interesting ideas to include the local community and pay tribute to the UNESCO World Heritage. Notably, the Sales and Marketing Depar tment of the hotel organized a trip to the ancient city of Chernigov for their employees that would take them on a voyage of discovery of prominent sites of Ukraine’s cultural heritage outside of the capital. The Administrative and Technical Depar tments as well as the Security Depar tment decided to continue the initiatives of the two previous years by helping the local senior citizens institution with technical services and gifts for the tenants.

I-SPA и отдел кадров провели «семейный день» для детей сотрудников, устроив конкурс рисунка для самых маленьких, уроки плавания для ребят постарше и мастер-класс по приготовлению пиццы с шеф-поваром Тайсом Ван Руном для самых старших. Разные отделы организовали несколько совместных проектов: сотрудники провели так называемый «обмен пожеланиями и предложениями», получив множество полезной информации и советов по работе. На организованной внутри отеля небольшой ярмарке по сбору средств на благотворительность продавали рукодельные изделия и украшения. Сотрудники отеля также инициировали программу коллективного пользования автомобилями, чтобы все могли добираться на работу и с работы быстро и с комфортом. I-SPA and the Human Resources Depar tment held a family day for the employees’ children by having an ar t contest for the younger children, swimming lessons for older children and a workshop on pizza-making by chef Thijs van Roon for the oldest children. Various depar tments organized the united projects: the employees had the so-called Wishes and Suggestions Exchange that generated an abundance of helpful information and professional tips. They held an indoor fair to raise funds for charity where handicrafts and handmade jewelr y were sold. The hotel employees also star ted a car pooling initiative to help ever y employee get to work swiftly and comfor tably. On September 24, 2012 InterContinental Kiev signed a partnership agreement with the world’s leading children protection organization.

Подписание Меморандума между отелем и Детским фондом ООН (ЮНИСЕФ) ознаменовало начало сотрудничества, в рамках которого отель сможет оказывать широкое содействие деятельности в Украине этой авторитетной международной организации, защищающей права детей во всем мире. InterContinental Kiev стал первым отелем Киева, принявшим на себя официальные обязательства по поддержанию деятельности и проектов ЮНИСЕФ. Подписание соглашения стало главным событием и итогом Недели ответственного бизнеса — международной акции, организованной сетью InterContinental Hotels Group, которая проходила с 17 по 23 сентября 2012 года. Наряду с сотнями других отелей сети по всему миру, отель InterContinental Kiev участвует в этом мероприятии уже третий год подряд. Неделя ответственного бизнеса предоставляет отелям сети прекрасную возможность внести свой вклад в развитие той местности, где расположен конкретный отель, и предполагает их сотрудничество с местными благотворительными организациями. The signing of the Memorandum between the hotel and UNICEF marks the star t of a cooperative relationship that will enable the hotel to provide tremendous suppor t to the international organization that protects children’s rights all over the world. InterContinental Kiev hotel has become the first hotel in Kiev that officially pledged to suppor t UNICEF’s activities and projects. Signing of the agreement was highlighted during InterContinental Hotels Group worldwide Responsible Business Week that lasted from September 17th to September 23rd, 2012. Along with hundreds of hotels worldwide, InterContinental Kiev hotel has par ticipated in this event three years in a row. The Responsible Business Week initiative provides the hotels group with a great oppor tunity to give something back to the local community and centers on cooperation with local charities. UNICEF has been taking steps towards improving the lives of children and families in Ukraine for the last 15 years. In 2012 UNICEF initiated cooperation with the Ukrainian private sector to facilitate the new generation’s future. Thereby UNICEF’s intends to increase funding for its projects and encourage corporate social responsibility initiatives to benefit children. The Memorandum outlined the roadmap for InterContinental Kiev hotel and UNICEF united activities designed to protect children’s rights and raise awareness of the problems in this area that exist in Ukraine. “We are proud to cooperate with InterContinental Kiev hotel with the purpose of protecting children’s rights in Ukraine. UNICEF has had a lot of experience in effective cooperation with InterContinental Hotels Group that actively support UNICEF’s programs in different countries of the world. We believe that this kind of cooperation in Ukraine will encourage generating new ideas and solutions to i mprove children’s lives as well as to increase social responsibility of business people which in turn will help protect children’s interests”, said Rudiger Luchmann, Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Ukraine. With over 12-year experience in business development, marketing and HR, the new director has a well-proven track record in developing, designing and implementing business processes with a focus on corporate’s growth and profitability. Building on her successes in the fields of consulting and recruitment, as well as her experience in motivating employees and creating training programmes, Irina Zinchenko brings a fresh skill-set to the already diverse management board. Irina has significant experience in hospitality and service industries in Ukraine, Cyprus, Italy and the USA. Основатель одной из первых негосударственных организаций в Грузии — «Молодежного общества по защите памятников». Лауреат литературных конкурсов Грузии, Германии, Литвы. Автор сборника новелл «Желтый троллейбус», «Я — бегун», пьес «Ночной гость» и «Шиола». В разное время литературные работы Думбадзе публиковали в литовских, российских, азербайджанских периодических изданиях. Ghela Dumbadze is the founder of one of the first NGOs in Georgia — Youth Society for Historic Sites Preservation. A laureate of literary awards in Georgia, Germany and Lithuania and author of novels Yellow Trolley—Bus, I’m a Runner and of plays Night Guest and Shiola. Dumbadze’s writings have been published in Lithuanian, Russian and Azerbaijani periodicals. His paintings are displayed in one of the most popular galleries of Tbilisi the Ar t Gallery Line.

— Mr. Counselor, do you have a phrase, thought or quote that you live your life by?

— «Путь праведника труден… И блажен тот пастырь, который во имя милосердия и доброты ведет слабых за собой, сквозь долины тьмы», — это из Библии, книга Иезекииля.

— “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides … Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness”, — this is from the Bible, the book of Ezekiel.

— Как вы считаете, почему люди добиваются успеха? — Думаю, что благодаря труду, образованию, чувству неудовлетворенности от уже достигнутого, а также своему духовному равновесию, сильной и стойкой вере и, конечно, удаче. — Был ли такой человек, с которого вы «делали жизнь»? — Их было множество. И наверняка их еще будет много. С самого детства меня окружали люди, с которых мне можно было брать пример… Я родился в Тбилиси, в семье историка Мамиа Думбадзе и учительницы грузинского языка и литературы Генриетты Романовой. Я был обыкновенным ребенком. Обожал подвижные игры со сверстниками и рисование. Бабушка Домна давала мне много цветных карандашей, бумаги, и я сидел, рисовал. — Что именно? — Окружающий меня мир. Одним из самых ярких воспоминаний моего детства было лазурное сухумское море, которое увидел из окна поезда … В 1970 году меня отдали в среднюю школу с углубленным изучением английского языка, в которой 145 педагогов обучали 2200 учеников. После школы поступил в Государственный университет на филологический факультет. У меня были несравненные педагоги: Бесарион Джорбенадзе, Отар Чхеидзе, Миша Квливидзе, Корнели Данелия, Нели Бабунашвили, Тенгиз Кикачейшвили, Дурмишхан Цинцадзе и многие другие. С университетских времен запомнил персону Зураба Чавчавадзе как пример для подражания. — Случались ли в вашей жизни моменты, когда вы считали себя неудачником? Что делали, чтобы преодолеть такие настроения? — Бывало, не оставалось сил, неудачником же себя никогда не чувствовал. Еще в юности мне удалось доказать свою способность на поступок. В университете после первого курса поразил всех, уйдя в армию на два года. Таким образом, я искал самостоятельности, и никто не мог меня переубедить. Несмотря на то, что службу проходил в Грузии, тянуть лямку пришлось в очень сложных условиях. Первые три месяца в пище вообще отсутствовало мясо, а в «учебке» даже питьевая вода была дефицитом. Многие сослуживцы «сломались», и их переводили в другие части. Но, несмотря на все трудности, никогда не вспоминал службу в армии в негативном смысле. Именно там понял цену дружбе. Жалел лишь об одном, что моя бабушка Параскева (Гамиа) Мамулия меня не дождалась… — Самое важное событие в вашей жизни — это… — Рождение моей любимой дочери — Саломэ, моей большой подруги, и рождение моего внука — Николоза, моего маленького друга. — Как можете описать вашу работу? Это – тяжелый труд, полет вдохновения, бешеное движение или что-то другое? — Все вместе. Плюс постоянное чувство высокой ответственности. В Министерстве иностранных дел тружусь с 1998 года. Украина для меня уже третья страна, в прошлом работал советником в посольствах Грузии в России и Азербайджане. Компенсацией за многочисленные трудности стало знакомство со многими интересными людьми. — Успех несовместим с плохой физической формой. Как вам удается ее поддерживать? — С помощью ежедневных тренировок, которые занимают не меньше 20 минут времени. А также частым прогулкам и беседам с супругой Ириной. Кстати, нашей счастливой семье в Киеве исполнилось 25 лет. Моя супруга была и до сих пор является музой большинства моих работ.

— What in your opinion makes people successful? — I think it is a result of hard work, education, and never settling with what one has already accomplished, as well as a spiritual balance, strong and steadfast faith and, of course, luck. — Has there been a person in your life whom you consider a role model? — There have been many and I’m cer tain there will be many more. Since childhood, I have always been surrounded by potential role models. I was born in Tbilisi in the family of a historian Mamia Dumbadze and a Georgian language teacher Henrietta Romanova. I was an ordinary child who loved playing active games with my peers and drawing. My grandmother Domna would give me lots of color pencils and paper, and I would sit and draw. — What would you draw? — The world around me. One of the brightest emotions of my childhood was seeing the azure sea near Sukhumi out of a train window. In 1970 I star ted going to school for advanced English language study where 145 teachers taught 2200 students. After finishing school I was accepted to the State University, majoring in philology. I had incomparable teachers: Besarion Jorbenadze, Otar Chkheidze, Misha Kvlividze, Korneli Danelia, Neli Babunashvili, Tengiz Kikacheishvili, Durmishkhan Tsintsadze and many others. I’ll never forget Zurab Chavchadze from my university days and his personality as my role model. — Have you had times in your life when you felt like a failure? What did you do to overcome those feelings? — I have felt like I had no strength to go on, but I have never felt like a failure. In my youth, I found a way to prove my ability to do something out of the ordinar y. After my f irst year at the university, I dropped out, got drafted and spent two years in the army. That was my way of f inding independence and no one could change my mind. I only ser ved in Georgia, but I had a ver y diff icult time sweating it out. For the f irst three months, the food we were given had no meat in it and at boot camp even water was in shor t supply. Many of my fellow soldiers broke down and had to be transferred to other units. But despite all the diff iculties I experienced, I have never thought of my time in the army as negative. The only thing I regret is that my grandmother, Paraskeva (Gamia) Mamulia, didn’t live to see me return home from the army… — What do you consider the most important event of your life? — The birth of my beloved daughter and big friend, Salome, and that of my grandson and little friend, Nikolos. — How would you describe your job? Is it hard work, a thrill of inspiration, a rat race or something else? — All of the above and also constant responsibility. I have been working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1998. Ukraine is the third country I have worked in. Before that I worked as a Counselor to Georgia’s Embassies in Russia and Azerbaijan. Meeting many interesting people has been my compensation for all the many difficulties of the job. — Success is incompatible with bad physical shape. How do you keep in shape? — I spend at least 20 minutes every day exercising. Besides that, I take frequent walks and talks with my wife Irina. — Как вы заполняете свой досуг? — Как правило, это рисование, кино, театр, встречи с друзьями, кулинария, выезды на природу. — Когда начали рисовать? — Рисовать маслом начал в Москве. Украина в художественном смысле оказалась очень плодовитой. На тепло, полученное здесь, я ответил 40 полотнами, которые благодаря помощи нашего посла Григола Катамадзе были выставлены в киевской галерее «АртХолл». — Ваша главная слабость? — Сентиментальность. И еще желание вкусно поесть, причем совсем не диетическую пищу. — За что бы отдали любые деньги, не задумываясь?

— Usually I spend my leisure time painting, going to the movies and theatre, seeing my friends, cooking and going out of town for nature and recreation. — When did you start painting? — I started painting in oil in Moscow. Ukraine has been very fruitful for my artistic work. I have received a lot of warmth from Ukraine and have given back 40 paintings that our Ambassador Grigol Katamadze helped to exhibit in the Kiev Art Hall Gallery. — What’s your greatest weakness? — Being sentimental and my love for good food, none of which is health food. — What would you be willing to pay any amount of money for, without giving a second thought?

— Верите ли вы в судьбу?

— Do you believe in destiny?

— Да! Вопреки довольно трудному жизненному пути, иногда даже считаю себя баловнем судьбы. — С каким животным себя ассоциируете? — С волком, исходя из лингвистической основы и происхождения моего имени. Волк по своему образу жизни — удивительный зверь. — Можете ли вы назвать себя «обычным нормальным человеком»? — Могу назвать не совсем обычным. Если рисование и литературную деятельность раньше считал своим хобби, то сейчас думаю, что также не меньше люблю в любую погоду управлять автомобилем. А еще могу беспрерывно смотреть на море и общаться с мудрыми людьми, а иногда и просто их слушать. — Ваше впечатление об Украине и любимое место в Киеве? — Украина удивительная, уютная и очень добрая страна. В Киеве много прекрасных мест, а самое любимое, наверное, это Андреевский спуск.

— Yes, I do! In spite of my life’s many difficulties, I sometimes even consider myself a spoiled child of fortune. — What animal would you associate yourself with? — A wolf, because of my name etymology. A wolf is an amazing animal with a unique way of life. — Would you consider yourself an ordinary, average person? — I would consider myself not quite ordinary. By the way, if painting and writing used to be my hobbies, now I also think that I love driving my car in all weather just as much. I could also watch the sea forever and converse with wise people, sometimes just listening to what they have to say. — What’s your impression of Ukraine and what’s your favorite place in Kiev? — Ukraine is an amazing, cozy and very kind country. Kiev has a lot of beautiful places, and my favorite one is probably Andriyivsky Descent. — How often do you stay at InterСontinental Hotel and why?

— I would say that I visit your hotel quite frequently. I choose it because of the festive and cozy ambience and the rare freshness prevailing in the atmosphere.

— What do you do for leisure?

— Every time I pass by your hotel in my car, I tell my wife, “Here is my third home!” After my apartment and the Embassy. — Have you participated in any of InterContinental Kiev hotel events recently? — A few different conferences and regular business lunches as well. — Have you been to the hotel lounge bar b-hush? And if you have, what feelings did the view of Kiev that opens from there evoke in you? — Yes, of course, I’ve been there and it evoked an ineffable feeling of ethereality like a flight of an imagined airship over the city I love! — Could you name a place on the world map where you feel at home more than anywhere else? — I feel at home most of all in Georgia, in my native city of Tbilisi. — And our traditional question: what three things would you take with you to a desert island?

Ожидали ли вы, что ровно через год снова попадете в мир вашей свадьбы, устроенной для вас агентством и отелем? — Для нас это была полная неожиданность! Мы снова окунулись в атмосферу свадебного торжества, ведь ассоциации с отелем InterContinental Kiev у нас именно такие. Прогуливались по знакомым залам отеля, в памяти мелькали фрагменты нашего праздника, и мы все больше погружались в приятные и волнительные воспоминания. — One year ago on July 30 the wedding agency Svadebny Perepolokh hosted your wedding at InterContinental Kiev hotel. Did you expect that one year later you’d be back to your wedding world, hosted by the agency and hotel? It was a total surprise for us! We experienced the wedding celebration all over again, because for us it is associated with InterContinental Kiev hotel. As we walked around the familiar halls of the hotel, our memories were refreshed and a kaleidoscope of the wedding events was brought to mind. Those were pleasant, exciting memories. And another surprise for us was the gift of a celebratory dinner from the hotel at the Comme Il Faut restaurant. It was the grand finale in the chain of pleasant surprises.

Last year’s emotions were about the anticipation of our future life together, a little flutter and wedding bustle. But now a year later when the feelings are running deeper and there is more awareness, our emotions during the photo shoot reflected our joy and marital bliss, creating a new life and the excitement of many surprises. — What kind of emotions did you experience when you received the surprise from the florist company “The Vase”. What kind of surprise was it? It was a very special surprise. The Vase florist company gave me a replica of one of my wedding bouquets that I had had at the reception. Frankly, I couldn’t believe my eyes — it was really my bouquet! When I held it, I felt like a bride again experiencing the feelings I had had at the wedding.

Alyona and Igor, 27/08/2012 — Last year on August 27, you experienced one of the most significant events of your lives — your wedding. How did you go about choosing a wedding agency and a banquet hall? — Через год после свадьбы, что вспоминаете чаще всего из этого дня? Может быть, что-то хотелось бы повторить? — Конечно же, церемонию и эмоции, которые мы при этом пережили; оформление праздника, декор; приятные отзывы наших друзей и близких, которым очень понравился наш праздник... Несомненно, вспоминаем только позитивные моменты. Хотелось бы повторить абсолютно все. У нас есть планы сделать свадьбу на 5-летнюю годовщину. И, разумеется, отметить ее в InterContinental Kiev, привлекая к этому «Свадебный переполох».

— What part of your wedding comes to mind most vividly now, one year later? Would you like to relive some of it? — Of course, it would be great to relive the wedding ceremony and the emotions that we experienced, the wedding decor, positive comments of our friends and relatives who loved the wedding… Undoubtedly, only good things come to mind. We’d love to relive all of it. We have plans to have our second wedding for our 5th anniversary. And of course, we’d like to have it at InterContinental Kiev hotel with the help of the Svadebny Perepolokh agency.

— Узнав, что на годовщину свадьбы вас ждет подарок от отеля: фотосессия от Николая Куцана и точные копии свадебного букета и бутоньерки от компании Lora Shen — готовились ли вы к этому празднованию специально? — Мы изначально готовились к празднику, хотели провести его в том же месте, где год назад праздновали свадьбу. Подарки, которые нам сделали, очень приятно удивили и подняли настроение. Тем более, мы этого не ожидали. Приятно думать, что о нас не забыли и так же вспоминают наш праздник, как и мы. У нас останется память про этот день в виде фотографий Коли Куцана.

— When you found out that for your first anniversary you would receive presents from the hotel; a free photo shoot from Nikolai Kutsan and replicas of your wedding bouquet and boutonniere from Lora Shen company, did you make special preparations for the celebration? — Originally we were making preparations for the celebration and wanted to have it at the same place where we celebrated our wedding a year before. The presents that we got were a very pleasant surprise and an inspiration — especially, because we were not expecting them. It’s nice to think that someone remembers us and our anniversary as much as we do. We’ll always have memories of that day captured in Kolya Kutsan’s photos.

— Какие подарки приготовили друг для друга? — Игорь подарил мне красивые украшения (что еще нужно девушке?), а я подарила видеоклип, где были смонтированы самые смешные моменты со свадьбы, которые не вошли в официальное видео. Ведь, кроме тех красивых моментов, которые были на свадьбе, так же мы пережили и «закадровые» моменты, которые гости не видели, но для нас они тоже были частью праздника, иногда даже более важной.

— What kind of presents did you get for each other? — Igor gave me beautiful jewelry (a girl’s best friends), and I gave him a video clip of the funniest moments from our wedding that were not included in the official video footage. The wedding had many beautiful moments, but there were also some moments behind the scenes that the guests didn’t see, but they were also a part of the wedding and some of them even more important than the visible parts.

— А платье вы храните и планируете примерить еще раз? Например, провести в InterContinental Kiev фотосессию на 5-летнюю годовщину семейной жизни? — Я его, несомненно, храню, но еще не определилась, надену ли его на 5-летие. Возможно, это уже будет новое платье, которое отразит новую меня.

— Did you keep your dress and do you have plans to try it on again? For example, would you like to have your fifth anniversary photo shoot at InterContinental Kiev hotel? — Of course I have kept it, but I’m not sure whether I will put it on for our 5th anniversary though. I might have a new dress by that time that will be a reflection of the new me.

Dancing in the Pool Watsu is a form of massage that InterContinental Kiev hotel offers its guests. It is often described as Shiatsu in water, and is a deeply relaxing combination of water-based exercise, flotation and massage. Watsu is gentle, assisted stretching and movement, massage and dance that takes place in a pool of warm water (around 35ºC). It is a form of therapy based on the principles of Zen Shiatsu. Watsu is sometimes referred to as “aquatic bodywork” or “aquatic physiotherapy”. Watsu is a great treatment for anyone with mobility problems, and is often used in rehabilitation. As the movement is supported by the resistance and buoyancy of the water, and you are assisted by the Thai therapist from InterContinental Kiev hotel, the treatment is both gentle and effective, increasing flexibility, strengthening muscles, and providing very deep relaxation. Watsu affects and assists different people in different ways. When used in rehabilitation it is focused on targeting specific muscles and joints, as well as on the holistic whole-body therapy. Watsu can also help with general flexibility and core strength. Watsu is also a meditative treatment having a deeply relaxing effect. It can leave you feeling very sleepy and light-headed. As such, it can improve your sleep, relieve anxiety and help digestion. Pack your swimming costume and clear your schedule for a few hours, so that you can really maximize the benefits of the treatment. Your therapist will talk to you through the treatment, asking you for key health and personal information and explaining the process of the therapy. It is a very supportive treatment, so you can expect to be guided wholly through the process. Dressed in swimming costumes, the guest of our hotel and the therapist will both get into the pool. Once in the water, your therapist (or “practitioner”) may wrap small floats to your limbs to help keep you afloat more easily — you won’t have that feeling of treading water. Your therapist will then cradle and support different areas of your body at different times as she moves you through a variety of different movements and positions, and applies finger, hand and limb pressure to your body. You will at times find yourself being “wrapped up” with your practitioner. It is a very hands-on treatment so trusting and feeling comfortable with your therapist is really important. Throughout the treatment your ears and the back of your head will be under the water. Your face will remain above the water. Sometimes I-SPA Center guests are offered ear plugs or even a nose clip, if need be. Watsu is a flowing therapy that moves through different stages. Sometimes you will be still, sometimes guided through gentle rhythmic movements. At the end of the session, your therapist will help you to an upright position. You’ll probably feel a bit out of it, and may well be a bit reluctant for it to finish!

Firstly, remember that the therapist are in control of the treatments — don’t worry about them, or try to anticipate the movements and “help them out”. They will guide and support you. It can be quite a funny concept at first as you have so much freedom of movement and watsu is quite an intimate treatment in some ways as the therapist is actually as “undressed” as you, and in the pool with you. But don’t be put off — watsu is a highly professional and specialized treatment and you will be in good hands. And it’s really worth it as you’ll feel so great during and afterwards! Make sure you have time for a snooze or to lie down afterwards. This is where having Watsu at a spa can really deepen and intensify the effectiveness of the treatment — in an environment dedicated to relaxation and escape, you’ll be able to stretch the pleasure and benefits to the max! Have a snooze and drink plenty of water. You will need to take it easy for the rest of the day. As with a floatation treatment, Watsu is very affecting and if you don’t rest and have plenty of water, you could find yourself feeling washed out, and having headaches. 50

Cливочное масло комнатной температуры смешиваем с бренди до однородной массы. Под кожу индейки наносим получившуюся массу по всей поверхности. Саму кожу натираем солью и перцем. Отдельно кружочками толщиной 1 см режем апельсины и лимоны, добавляем тимьян, соль, перец, немного бренди и палочку корицы и фаршируем этим индейку. Готовим в духовке при 140 0 С 1 час, после чего поднимаем температуру до 200 0 С и запекаем до появления корочки. Доводим до готовности в зависимости от размера индейки.

Mix butter with brandy at room temperature until smooth. Put the butter mixture under the turkey skin. Rub salt and pepper all over the turkey skin. Slice oranges and lemons into 1 cm slices; add thyme, salt, pepper, a little brandy and a cinnamon stick and stuff the turkey with the mixture. Bake in the oven at 140 0 С for one hour. Then turn the heat up to 200 0 С degrees until the crust is crispy. Bake until the turkey is cooked through. The time may differ depending on the turkey’s size.

Клюкву перетираем на мясорубке, добавляем воду, немного увариваем, плюс вино, сахар. Протираем до однородной массы, доводим до нужного вкуса и увариваем до консистенции соуса.

Grind cranberries in a grinder, add water, cook for a while, add wine and sugar. Blend, add condiments to taste and cook until the sauce texture is right.

Our Executive Pastry Chef Valeriu Petcu is delighted to share with you a special recipe French Christmas Dessert!

1. Взбить 4 яичных желтка со 140 г сахара, пока смесь не станет светлой и пенистой. Потом добавить муку, крахмал и растопленное масло. Когда смесь дойдет до однородной консистенции, добавить 4 яичных белка и осторожно взбить до состояния густой пены с помощью лопатки. 2. На противень размером 40x25 см выложить смазанный маслом пергамент, вылить на него тесто и с помощью лопатки разровнять его. Печь 8-10 мин. при температуре 180°C в предварительно подогретой духовке, пока торт слегка не подрумянится. 3. Увлажните чистое тонкое полотенце, выжмите и разложите на рабочей поверхности. Потом быстрым движением переверните бисквит на полотенце и аккуратно снимите пергаментную бумагу. С помощью полотенца заверните тесто в рулет и оставьте остывать примерно на 30 минут. Сделайте это сразу: горячий бисквит еще не крошится. 4. Пока торт остывает, смешайте каштановое пюре с размягченным сливочным маслом. Добавьте коньяк. Можно также добавить измельченные засахаренные каштаны. 5. Когда бисквит остынет, выложите его на кусок пищевой пленки и разверните. Кисточкой смажьте бисквит пропиткой. Для изготовления пропитки прокипятите 100 г сахара и 150 мл воды в течение 5 минут, добавьте 50 мл коньяку. 6. Лопаткой размажьте 2/3 крема по всей поверхности бисквита. Аккуратно скрутите его и заверните в пленку. Закрепите ее, чтобы придать рулету нужную форму. 7. Растопите 50 г черного шоколада на водяной бане или в микроволновке и смешайте с остатками каштанового крема. Намажьте рулет кремом, разровняйте по всей поверхности. Нарисуйте полоски по всей длине рулета, чтобы он стал похож на полено, и положите в холодильник на 12 часов. И наконец... Выньте «полено» из холодильника за час до еды, вырежьте дупло и украсьте по желанию. Можно использовать сахарную пудру, засахаренные каштаны, корицу, листья мяты, засахаренные лепестки фиалки. «Полено» хранить в холодильнике не больше двух дней. Можно приготовить рулет без использования спиртного.

Для крема 500 г каштанового пюре 250 г размягченного сливочного масла 3 столовые ложки коньяка, темного рома или виски

For the cream 500 g of chestnut 250 g soft butter 3 tablespoons alcohol choice (Cognac, dark rum, whiskey ...)

Для пропитки 100 г сахара 50 мл коньяка, рома или виски

For the syrup 100 g sugar 50 cl of alcohol (the same as for the cream)

For the icing 50 g of dark chocolate

1. In a bowl, whisk 4 egg yolks with 140g sugar until the mixture is pale and mousse. Then add the flour, cornstarch and butter melted. Once the mixture is homogeneous, add 4 egg whites beat it stiff, without breaking, using a spatula to mix very easy. 2. On one baking sheet about 40x25, place a sheet of parchment paper lightly buttered, then pour mixture and using a spatula stretch the composition range in same thickness right across the entire tray. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes at 180°C (preheated oven) until the cake turns slightly. 3. Dampen a clean cloth, wring it out and lay it on a work plan. With a quick gesture, return the biscuit on the cloth, then gently peel off the parchment paper. Fold a strip of 1 cm cake, taking the cloth, roll carefully the biscuit itself and let it cool down (takes approximately 30 minutes). Do not wait to ride, do right out of the oven when the biscuit is warm and very flexible. 4. While the cake cooled, mix in the food processor or by hand, chesnut cream with the softened butter . Add alcohol. You can also add some broken marrons glaces. 5. Once cooled, place the cake on a sheet of plastic wrap and gently pull down your biscuit. Using a brush, soak the syrup made with 100 g of sugar you boiled 5 minutes with 15 cl water, to which you have added, once cooled, 5 cl of alcohol (the same as in the cream). 6. Using a spatula, spread the 2/3 of the cream over the entire surface of the biscuit. Roll it gently again by enclosing it in the film. Tighten without damaging it, so that it takes a regular shape. In the stock, it may escape the cream biscuit, do not hesitate to recover with the icing. 7. Melt 50 g of dark chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave and mix the rest of the cream with chestnuts. Spread this cream regularly over the entire surface of the log by smoothing. Draw the stripes of the log through a range along the entire length, then place in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours. Finally ... Remove the log about an hour before eating, cut the coves and decorate as you like ( sugar powder, candied chestnut, cinnamon stick, mint leaves, violet petals cristalise). The millenarian St. Sophia’s Cathedral in the historic center of Kyiv is one of the most remarkable sights of the city. To paraphrase Napoleon, you can say that from the heights of St. Sophia’s domes a hundred centuries look down on us. Historical value, architectural uniqueness, artistic originality — all of these and more are amalgamated in this monument.

С этого момента начинается его история как православного центра Киевской Руси. Собор построили по инициативе князя Ярослава Мудрого. Project Beginning The officially recognized date of St. Sophia’s Cathedral founding is 1037. However, a German chronicler Thietmar of Merseburg mentioned a cathedral by that name in 1017. Historians tend to think that he wrote about some other building. In any case, St. Sophia’s dedication was performed in 1049. From that moment on it launches its history as a stronghold of Orthodoxy in Kiev Rus. The cathedral was built by the will of Yaroslav the Wise. The chosen site was symbolic — it was the intersection of the four main roads leading to Kiev, here the Kievans had defeated the Pecheneg nomads a few years before the construction began. According to the prince’s design, the cathedral was supposed to be grandiose to emphasize the greatness of Kiev Rus and the increasing influence of the new nation in the world of the day. The best craftsmen of Byzantium and Kiev Rus were summoned to the construction site. The frescos and mosaics that eventually made St. Sophia’s Cathedral famous were created by reputable Greek artisans. Prince Yaroslav accomplished his end — the cathedral turned out to be one of a kind. The craftsmen followed the Byzantine church building canons and built St. Sophia’s in a way that was unlike any other of the existing cathedrals. Its dimensions (55 by 42 meters) could very well rival the Constantinople cathedral by the same name. The churches built in the Byzantine Empire of the day were normally smaller in size. The craftsmen who worked in Kiev were creating the greatest temple in all the land of 58

Наконец, к началу XVII века святое место пришло в ужасное состояние. Судя по всему, здание лишилось даже кровли. Гибель православной святыни предотвратил знаменитый киевский митрополит Петр Могила. Благодаря его титаническим усилиям собор был приведен в порядок, стены побелили (при этом, увы, замазали фрески и мозаики), специально приглашенный итальянский архитектор Октавиано Манчини придал храму его современные черты, появились грушевидные купола в модном тогда стиле «украинского барокко». St. Sophia’s Cathedral has been impacted by all the adversities that have befallen Kiev. When 1240 the Mongol-Tartar army led by Batu Khan conquered the city, the invaders looted and partially destroyed the greatest Orthodox temple. It is said that St. Sophia’s Cathedral unearthly beauty saved it from total demolition — even the barbarians didn’t dare destroy such a wonder… Kiev kept changing hands. After the Mongol-Tartars came the Lithuanians. During their rule the cathedral was brought to total desolation. Kiev was many a time raided by the Crimean Tartars, which resulted in St. Sophia’s continued decline. Finally by the start of the 17th century the sacred place had fallen to terrible ruin. By all accounts, the roof of the building was gone. It was the Kiev Metropolitan Peter Mohyla who prevented the imminent destruction of the Orthodox holy shrine. Due to his monumental efforts the cathedral was restored, its walls — whitewashed (unfortunately the frescos and mosaics were painted over in the process), an Italian architect Octaviano Mancini, invited for the express purpose of the cathedral restoration, gave it its modern appearance. The church got pear-shaped domes in the popular “Ukrainian baroque” style of the day. Some time later in the beginning of the 18th century during the time of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, a 76-meter bell tower was erected. It became the most important compositional element of St. Sophia’s Cathedral entity. It seemed that the worst was finally over and that ruin had become a thing of the past, but St. Sophia’s had yet another test to face. After the October Revolution of 1917, Bolsheviks and militant atheists that came to power had grave intentions of blowing up the cathedral. The French are considered to have saved the cathedral from certain destruction. They remembered that one of their queens had been Anna, a daughter of Yaroslav the Wise. And they strongly urged the Soviet Government to preserve the cathedral that had been built by the person who had left such a mark in the history of France. So some way or another St. Sophia Cathedral was spared, though its status was changed from that of a functional church to a museum. Today, regular church services are performed in the cathedral once again.

Архитектурные формы и роспись собора образуют неповторимое единство. Фрески и мозаики, подобно орнаменту вышивки, украшают стены, столбы, своды. Любопытно выглядят многочисленные граффити, исполненные жителями города времен Киевской Руси — они свидетельствуют и о некотором художественном вкусе, и об определенной грамотности населения. Оформление стен и сводов отражает связь божественного с земным, в них отражены библейские сюжеты и сцены мирской жизни, и все это увязано в сюжетном единстве. Наиболее эффектна фигура Богоматери Оранты («Нерушимой стены») в молитвенной позе, с воздетыми вверх руками. Высота мозаики — 6 метров, и она сразу бросается в глаза, как только переступаешь порог храма. Считается, что пока стоит Оранта, не падет и Киев… Изнутри собор выглядит красочно и немного загадочно. Прекрасно освещенный (свет падает сквозь окна «барабанных» куполов), он создает свою особенную вселенную, где нет места дурным мыслям и плохим помыслам. Выдержав многочисленные испытания, выпавшие на его долю, Софийский собор остался тем, кем его и создавали — духовной цитаделью, оплотом добра и любви.

St. Sophia’s Wonders St. Sophia draws your attention from a distance. Even though the modern architecture of Kiev obstructs the panoramic view, the unique arrangement of 19 domed towers, set off by the bell-tower, stands out against any background from any point of view. And inside it is … the greatest treasure of St. Sophia’s Cathedral. Out of 5,000 m2 of the original frescos less than half have survived to this day. In 1843 they were discovered by accident when a small piece of plaster fell off revealing the 11th century frescos. But the workers did a poor job of clearing the walls and removed parts of the murals. The mosaics were covering a large part of the surface, but only one third of them have survived to this day. The color scheme is amazingly vivid and consists of 177 shades of silver, gold, yellow, red, green and blue colors. It represents the highest level of mosaic technique. The small pieces that are laid over wet plaster were positioned at an angle so that the incident rays of light would reflect at different angles to create a luciferous, sparkling surface that made the mosaics exceptionally expressive. The architectural forms and murals of the cathedral create a unique solidity. Frescos and mosaics decorate the walls, pillars, and domes like ornamental embroidery. It’s intriguing to see the numerous graffiti done by the townsfolk of the Kiev Rus time period. They testify of a certain artistic taste and literacy that the Kiev inhabitants of that day possessed. The wall and dome arrangements reflect the connection between the divine and the earthly; they portray biblical scenes and lay scenes harmonized in their narrative. The orans Virgin Mary with her arms outstretched in prayer is one of the most dramatic figures. It is 6 meters tall and catches the eye of every person that enters the temple. The traditional belief is that as long as the orans Virgin Mary is standing, Kiev will also stand… The interior of the cathedral is colorful and somewhat mysterious. It is brightly illuminated as light shines through the windows in the tholobate domes. There is a distinct atmosphere where there’s no room for bad thoughts and evil desires. Памятник Богдану Хмельницкому Эта конная фигура — символ Киева, она присутствует на многих фирменных изображениях города. А открыт монумент был в 1888 году, в честь 900-летия Крещения Руси. Установлен памятник на Софийской площади. Выбор места неслучаен: именно сюда в 1654 году прибыли российские послы для переговоров с гетманом Богданом Хмельницким о присоединении Украины к Московскому государству. Конная статуя гетмана работы петербургского скульптора Михаила Микешина высится на пьедестале в виде скалы из темно-серого гранита. Булава гетмана направлена приблизительно в сторону Польши, против которой под его руководством восстал украинский народ. Памятник Богдану Хмельницкому находится в непосредственной близости от отеля InterContinental Kiev, у Софийского собора.

Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s Monument This equestrian statue became a landmark of Kiev. It is depicted in many trademark pictures of the city. The monument was unveiled in 1888 to commemorate the 900th anniversary of Christianized Kiev Rus . It was erected on Sophiyska Square. The reason this place was chosen for erecting of the monument is that this was the spot where in 1654 the Russian ambassadors arrived to hold negotiations with Bohdan Khmelnytsky about uniting Ukraine and Muscovy. The equestrian statue of the Hetman was made by a Petersburg sculptor Mikhail Mikeshin and set upon a cliffshaped dark granite rock. The Hetman’s mace is pointed towards Poland, which Ukrainians rebelled against. Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s monument is a short distance from InterContinental Kiev hotel and St. Sophia’s Cathedral.

Princess Olga’s Monument The great princess of Kiev Rus lived in the 10th century when ruling a country was not something women were fit for. Nevertheless, she managed to keep the country united and pass it on to her son Svyatoslav intact. The monument was erected by a famous Ukrainian sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze and unveiled on Mikhailovska Square in 1911, but dismantled after the October Bolshevik Revolution. After Ukraine gained independence, the monument was restored and unveiled again in 1996. Princess Olga is flanked by three of the most significant figures in Ukrainian history: the apostle Andrew, the patron saint of Ukraine, and the Apostles to the Slavs, educators Cyril and Methodius. The City Founders’ Monument

По преданию, зафиксированному Нестором Летописцем, Киев был основан троими братьями — Кием, Щеком и Хоривом, у которых была прекрасная сестра Лыбидь. Памятник изображает их всех в ладье, как бы подплывающей к днепровским кручам. Монумент расположен на набережной Днепра, и был открыт в 1982 году, в ознаменование 1500летия основания Киева, и установлен на берегу реки у моста Патона. Вполне возможно, где-то там и высадились полтора тысячелетия тому назад легендарные братья со своей сестрой. Неудивительно, что именно этот памятник был выбран символом Киева как города, принимающего Евро-2012…

According to the legend, as recorded by Nestor the Chronicler, Kiev was founded by three brothers—Kyi, Scheck, and Khoryv—and their sister Lybed. The monument depicts them in a boat that is approaching the Dniper steep banks. The monument is located on the Dniper embankment near Paton Bridge and was unveiled in 1982 to commemorate the 1500th anniversary of Kiev’s founding. It is very possible that this was where the legendary siblings landed 1500 years ago. It is not surprising that this monument was chosen to be the symbol of Kiev as the hosting city of Euro 2012.

It looks especially impressive from the banks of the Dniper. It is a 5-meter tall figure of the prince holding a big cross in his hand set on a 16-meter pedestal shaped as a Byzantine chapel. Unveiled in 1853, it was erected on the hill where, according to the legend, Kievans were first baptized in 988 accepting Christianity. The hill was named after Prince Vladimir who christianized Kiev Rus and his monument became one of the landmarks of Kiev. In the 19th century around the monument on St. Vladimir’s Hill, the beautiful Swiss park was laid out, incidentally, the first free entrance public park in the city.

The monument near the staircase leading up to St. Andrew Church at the beginning of Andriyivsky Descent is dedicated to the characters of Chasing after Two Hares, a classical Ukrainian play by M. Staritsky, Svirid Petrovich Golokhvastov and his fiancé Pronya Prokopovna. Their wedding was supposed to be held in St. Andrew’s Church, but at the last moment on the church steps, the gold-digging Golokhvastov was ignominiously exposed. The monument of the colorful couple portrays them in the same way that they were shown in the popular Soviet film. Kiev newlyweds have a tradition of coming to the monument to profess their true love to each other. It is located 5 minutes away from the hotel.

Saint Vladimir’s the Great Monument

Panikovsky’s Monument This is another monument dedicated to a well-known literary character. It is located at the intersection of Khreshchatyk and Prorizna Street. The man is Mikhail Samuelevich Panikovsky, a character of the incredibly popular satirical novel The Little Golden Calf by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeni Petrov. In the book Panikovsky explains how he was conning others on that same spot by pretending to be blind. And now he is turned into a bronze statue of a fake blind man. Under his raised foot there is a coin. But if you take a mirror and see the reflection of the shoe’s sole in it, you will see a fig sign for everyone who is trying to get wealth dishonestly. There is a tradition to touch the shoe for good luck with finances.

The Monument of Motherland

Гигантский памятник, возвышающийся над парком Победы и музеем Великой отечественной войны, был открыт в 1981 году. Полная высота скульптуры — 62 метра, общая высота с постаментом — 102 метра, общий вес — 450 тонн. Вся эта махина стоит на склоне Черной горы и кажется, что ее может опрокинуть любое ненастье. Но специалисты заверяют: монумент «Родина-мать» должен простоять свыше 150 лет и способен выдержать даже землетрясение силой 9 баллов. Для статуи были разработаны уникальные технологии: ее сварили из специальной нержавеющей стали. Недавно для туристов и вообще всех желающих был придуман аттракцион: за 800 гривен вас обвязывают тросом и поднимают на верхушку щита Родины-матери, а потом вручают 21-сантиметровую бронзовую копию памятника и именной сертификат о покорении высоты в 92 м над Киевом. Очевидцы уверяют, что ощущения нельзя передать словами!

The gigantic monument overlooking Victory Park and the National Museum of the Great Patriotic War was unveiled in 1981. The height of the monument itself is 62 meters; with the addition of the pedestal it is a total 102-meter and weighs over 450 tons. The monument is located on the slope of the Chorna Gora hill which would appear to be a vulnerable location to any serious storm. But exper ts claim that monument will last over 150 years and can withstand a magnitude 9.0 ear thquake. The statue was made out of a special stainless steel of unique technology. Recently a new feature was added to be presented to tourists and the public: now for 800 UAH you can be lifted to the top of the statue shield on a cable and then receive a 21-cm bronze copy of the monument and a cer tificate stating that you have climbed the 92-meter height over Kiev. Those who have par ticipated in the climb claim that the experience was a thrill of their lifetime!

Специально для облицовки колонны из Италии был привезен белый мрамор, а ветвь, которую держит Оранта, покрыта золотом. БерегиняОранта — древнехристианский образ Богородицы, заступницы всех, кто нуждается в защите. Таким образом, фигура на колонне символизирует божественное покровительство Украине и ее жителям.

Exper ts say that it combines two different styles: Ukrainian Baroque and Empire. In any case, the monument looks both grand and solemn. The white marble for the pillar facework was brought in from Italy, and Berehynia’s branch is gold-plated. Berehynia Orans is an early Christian image of the Virgin Mary, the Intercessor of the defenseless. So the statue is a symbol of divine patronage of Ukraine and its people.

Памятник установлен недалеко от Крещатика, в начале тихого и красивого киевского района Липки — возможно, самого «атмосферного» и архитектурно интересного уголка украинской столицы. Памятник актеру был установлен в 2000 году по инициативе его бывших коллег. У ног хозяина — такса Фанфан, с которой Яковченко был совершенно неразлучен. У этого памятника принято фотографироваться «на удачу». Суеверные люди даже утверждают, что он отводит «дурной глаз»…

A Ukrainian actor, Nikolai Yakovchenko, is por trayed sitting on a bench near the National Ivan Franko Drama Theater where he worked for many years. The monument is located near Khreshchatyk at the edge of the Lypky district of Kiev, acceptably the most ambient and architecturally attractive par t of the Ukrainian capital. The monument of the actor was erected in 2000, at his colleagues’ initiative. At his feet we can see Yakovchenko’s favorite dachshund named “Fanfan”, that was always at the actor’s side. Many take pictures with the statue for good luck. Superstitious people even claim that the monument helps ward off the evil eye.

This is one of the most unusual and notable monuments of Kiev. Unveiled in 1982 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the creation of the USSR, it is located at the beginning of the main street Khreshchatyk, near European Square that used to be Kupechesky Park and later Pionersky Park. The giant rainbow-shaped arch symbolizes the uniting of Russians and Ukrainians. Underneath there are two sculptural compositions: two workers and Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky with the ambassador signing the Treaty joining Ukraine with Russia. Заметным и ожидаемым событием в мире моды стала традиционная, 31-я по счету Неделя украинской моды — Ukrainian Fashion Week, которая состоялась осенью в киевском «Мистецьком Арсенале». Залы комплекса стали настоящей Меккой для всех, кто хоть как-то причастен к миру моды.

Посмотреть на коллекции дизайнеров весна-лето 2013 последней программы Украинской Недели моды пришли более 20 тысяч гостей, в том числе — около 200 аккредитованных представителей СМИ, фэшн-консультантов и авторитетных блогеров из США, Великобритании, Италии, Германии, Израиля, России, Белоруссии, Польши и Украины. Всего состоялось 39 показов от 45 дизайнеров, а также пять тематических after-party и несколько неформальных вечеринок. В этом году Ukrainian Fashion Week отмечает 15-летие своего существования и за это время она, как подсчитали в ее Оргкомитете, провела 822 показа, объединив в своей программе fashion-show 265 дизайнеров из Украины и других стран. На подготовку коллекций для показов во время UFW дизайнеры потратили более 300 тысяч метров ткани. Модели прошли по подиумам примерно 16.640 километров, то есть, немногим меньше, чем от Киева до Владивостока и обратно. Украинскую неделю моды за 15 лет посетили более 450 тысяч гостей! По традиции Ukrainian Fashion Week открылась показом от одной из самых успешных украинских дизайнеров Лилии Пустовит, которая представила свою «Урбанистическую мозаику». По версии дизайнера, следующим летом в моде будут легкие приталенные брюки и платья с принтами в виде ромбов, звезд и крестов. Другим ярким акцентом коллекции также стал цвет лосось, который сама Пустовит окрестила «бешено розовым». Особое внимание на последней Украинской Неделе моды было приковано к показу Voronin. Известный модный дом впервые выпустил коллекцию под руководством Ларисы Ворониной — дочери основателя бренда, легендарного украинского дизайнера Михаила Воронина, который ушел из жизни весной этого года. Коллекции pret-a-porter SS 2013 также представили Marchi, Юлия Полищук, RITO, Людмила Кисленко, IDoL by Serge SMOLIN. В рамках проекта New Names на подиуме Украинской Недели моды дебютировали молодые дизайнеры и бренды Виктория Панюкова CYAN, Светлана Возиян, Лия Син, SAYYA, Марина Шелудько, Bogach&Volokhova for POSH. 31-я Ukrainian Fashion Week закрылась балетным шоу в постановке дизайнера Алексея Залевского. The traditional 31st Ukrainian Fashion Week that was held this autumn at the Mystetskyi Arsenal, Kyiv became a notable and anticipated event in the world of fashion. The halls of the Mystetskyi Arsenal complex turned into a fashion stronghold for all those who are in any way connected to the world of fashion. Over 20,000 visitors including about 200 accredited media representatives, fashion advisors and reputed bloggers from the US, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Israel, Russia, Belarus, Poland and Ukraine came to see SpringSummer 2013 fashion designers’ collections of the Ukrainian Fashion Week’s last program. Altogether there were 39 fashion shows from 45 designers as well as 5 themed after-parties and a few informal parties. This year marked the 15th anniversary of Ukrainian Fashion Week’s existence. According to the Organizational Committee during those years the Ukrainian Fashion Week has held 822 fashion shows that have united 265 designers from Ukraine and other countries. The UFW designers have used 300,000 meters of materials for the show collections. The models have walked about 16,640 km on catwalks, the distance which is almost as long as a round trip from Kyiv to Vladivostok. During those 15 years the Ukrainian Fashion Week has been visited by 450,000 guests! Following tradition, the Ukrainian Fashion Week was opened with the Urbanistic Mosaic fashion show from one of the most successful designers of Ukraine, Lilia Pustovyt. According to the designer’s interpretation, light slimfit-waist pants, and diamond-, star- and cross-printed dresses will be in vogue next summer. Another flamboyant emphasis of the collection was the salmon color which Pustovyt herself christened “wildly pink”. During the last Ukrainian Fashion Week special attention was given to the Voronin fashion show. The famous fashion house released its first collection under the supervision of Larisa Voronina, the daughter of the brand founder — the legendary Ukrainian designer Mikhail Voronin who had passed on last spring. Pret-a-porter SS 2013 collections were introduced by Marchi’s Julia Polishchuk, RITO’s Ludmila Kislenko and IDoL by Serge SMOLIN. Within the New Names project some young designers and new brands made their debut, namely Victoria Panyukova CYAN, Svetlana Vozian, Lia Syn, SAYYA, Marina Sheludko, Bogach&Volokhova for POSH. The 31st Ukrainian Fashion Week closed with a ballet show choreographed by the designer Alexei Zalevsky. The flamboyant fashion designer who always attracts attention with flashy dramatized productions of his fashion shows. Instead of models, dancers were invited from the National Opera of Ukraine headed by Denis Matvienko, a world-known ballet star. The dancers didn’t wear pointe shoes, but danced on the catwalk to the musical improvisation based on an Agatha Christi band’s song compilation. Alexander Vasilyev, a world-renowned fashion historian, interior designer, author of popular books and articles, unrivaled lecturer and collector, congratulated the Ukrainian Fashion Week with its 15th anniversary with his special greeting: “Thank you for your dedicated service to Fashion, for your talent and professionalism, for your skill in giving joy and creating beauty”. 84

The New Year is the happiest time of a year, a time of hope and dreams coming true. Euro-2012 was the most anticipated event of the last year. It was the first time we received guests of one of the most spectacular worldwide championships. And even though that was a new experience for us, our employees did a brilliant job of receiving guests from various countries. Many events are held at our hotel annually — conferences, seminars, forums, etc. We are very glad to see more and more guests coming back to the hotel to celebrate a birthday or to have a party with their friends and loved ones in one of our restaurants and bars.
