EDITOR’S COMMENT
Andrew Kidd EDITOR
Buyers’ market Victoria’s executive chairman is providing entertainment and growth for the group’s shareholders Comments by Geoff Wilding in the Victoria group’s financial results and other announcements are increasingly entertaining to read. Given the performance of the group you can’t blame him. In the most recent results, praising his management team, he says: ‘Shareholders will, I'm sure, be reassured to learn we avoid hiring pure MBA-types (excepting, possibly to make tea).’ He continues: ‘I suspect few shareholders truly appreciate just how big our market opportunity is. The size of the flooring sector in the regions in which Victoria operates is enormous. At the risk of stating the obvious, every building has at least one floor. The point I am emphasising is this: there is enormous scope for growth — both

organically through increasing our market share and expanding our product offering, and, of course, by way of acquisition.’ If its four previous acquisitions (excluding Millennium Weavers last month) had been there for the full year, pre-tax profits would have been £6.6m higher. There will be more buys, but Wilding warns potential targets ‘we will not overpay’. Also getting involved in acquisitions has been the Belfield Group, adding Tetrad to the family, where it promises to ‘invest heavily’. Could this see a spark of takeovers in the sector, after all many upholstery producers are relatively small? I don’t think this will happen, as unlike Victoria’s targets, upholstery production isn’t as easy to move from factory to factory, and then there’s the problem of trying to find a skilled workforce. Congratulations to the winners of the Interiors Monthly Awards 2017. You can find out who they are from page 33 onwards. Thank you again for voting. The winner of the Fortnum & Mason hamper from the voting prize draw was Sue Sutton, The Carpet and Homestore director, in Penzance, Cornwall. Enjoy it.

Confident Wilding looks to the future for Victoria Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman, said Warren Buffett helped guide his strategy after a record year for the group. ‘In 2006 legendary investor Warren Buffet acquired one of the world’s largest flooring manufacturers, Shaw Industries. Why? In two words: cash flow. Well run flooring manufacturers generate significant cash even when growing due to attractive supplier terms, quality debtors, long life expectancy of key plant, low technological change and other factors,’ said Wilding. ‘To confirm this view, Victoria’s underlying pre-tax operating cash flow this year was £43.6m and net free cash flow was £23.7m.’ This is £7.1m more than the previous year. ‘As a result, it is the board’s expectation that in the medium term Victoria will be capable of paying an attractive dividend. However, in the short term, we remain firmly of the view that the most wealth will be created for shareholders by deploying the free cash flow generated by group businesses towards paying down debt quickly and acquiring other high quality, earnings accretive flooring manufacturers,’ he explained. ‘Margins have more than doubled over the past four years but more upside remains through improving the efficiency of our logistics operation, procurement, and production
rationalisation. Each 1% increase in our EBITDA margin increases net profits more than 12.5%. Although 2017 was a record year, shareholders can be assured we remain just as miserly with expenses and just as focused on maximising sales – we strive to leave no revenue opportunity on the table for one of our competitors. We are positive about the next 12 months and beyond.’ Sales in the year to 1 April increased by 29% to £330.4m as underlying operating profit rose by 54% to £33.7m. Pre-tax profits more than doubled to £18.8m. Debt rose from £61.1m to £89.6m but the debt to earnings ratio fell from 1.85 to 1.63. Underlying interest costs were up from £3.7m to £4.25m. ‘There is a huge opportunity for Victoria to expand within the UK and overseas, via both acquisitions and organic growth. However, we will not pursue growth for growth’s sake alone. 2018 will be another positive year for Victoria as we have widened our market exposure, both geographically and by product range and our recent internal reorganisation will provide further revenue and margin growth. This will all be supported by further acquisitions for which, shareholders can be confident, we will not overpay,’ said Wilding.

Tetrad joins the Belfield portfolio Upholstery manufacturer Tetrad has been bought by Westbridge parent Belfield Group. The NorthEdge Capital backed furnishing business has bought Tetrad to strengthen its services in the high end upholstery designer and manufacturing market. Established 45 years ago, Tetrad has an annual turnover of £17m. Tetrad’s products will continue to be manufactured at its Preston facility and will be sold through existing sales channels. Janus Cooper will remain in his role as md, but as part of the Belfield Group. ‘Tetrad is a heritage brand that we have admired for many years. Its innovative, design-led approach has boosted its reputation in the market and we’re delighted for the business to become part of the Belfield Group. We now have huge potential to increase market share while

continuing to manufacture upholstered pieces of the highest quality. I very much look forward to working with Janus and his team to continue the good work that has been delivered over recent years and to building the brand and expanding its customer base and sales. We will invest heavily in the Tetrad division in order to capitalise on its growth potential,’ said Stephen Hampton, Belfield Group ceo. Belfield Group has experienced strong growth over the past few years. It secured funding from private equity firm NorthEdge Capital in a management buyout in July 2016, which saw NorthEdge Capital own 60% and its management 40%. The group has an annualised turnover approaching £200m and employs approximately 2,000 staff. It operates from seven sites across the UK, with a purpose built facility in Romania. Ben Wildsmith, NorthEdge Capital director, said: ‘We backed Belfield last year and have been really impressed by the quality and depth of the group’s management team. All four divisions of the group have performed exceptionally well in navigating events post the Brexit vote, while achieving strong and profitable growth across the business. Belfield is now in an excellent position, with clear strategic growth plans and is well placed to explore further acquisitions.’

Retailers can download marketing material from the NBF website
Retailers urged to promote British beds Retailers have been urged to encourage shoppers to buy British-made beds as they are ‘the best’ and ‘among the safest in the world’. To promote to message, the National Bed Federation has created free marketing materials for retailers to use. These include a special version of The Sleep Council logo with a Union Flag face that can help consumers identify a bed made in Britain; a new infographic for use on social media; plus a poster that can be printed to various sizes. These can be downloaded from the NBF website (www.bedfed.org.uk). ‘With summer remaining one of the key sales periods in the bed and furniture store calendar, it’s important for retailers to educate consumers on the best manufactured beds out there,’ said Simon Williams, NBF marketing manager. ‘British bed making is a thriving industry, with more than 100 manufacturers making beds across the length and breadth of Britain – many of them NBF Approved members. We have a long history of producing the best beds in the world, and British manufacturers are among the most innovative producers – which many consumers may not be aware of. ‘Retailers should also be making consumers aware that British beds are among the safest in the world, complying with stringent safety regulations and standards,’ added Williams.

Mark Wilkinson: 1950-2017 Renowned kitchen designer Mark Wilkinson died on 5 July after a short battle with cancer. He was 66 and passed away peacefully at his home in Wiltshire surrounded by his wife and children. During his long career his designs ranged from clothing to object d’art, but it is for furniture that he will be best remembered. In 1977 his first kitchen design in old pine pioneered the ‘English Country kitchen’ and launched an industry specialising in this aesthetic and style of living. He co-founded Smallbone of Devizes and in 1981 set up Mark Wilkinson Furniture. The company was sold to Canburg in 2009 and he became group creative director and remained involved in the business until his death. Wilkinson was a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers; a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers; a Fellow of the City and Guilds Institute; and a member of MENSA. In 2010 he was awarded an OBE for services to the furniture industry and charity. Born in north London, Wilkinson’s early educational experiences as a child with dyslexia informed both professional choices and personal passions. He had a long-standing commitment to supporting charities for dyslexia and the educational needs of children with the disability. He and his wife, Cynthia, had recently formed the Mark Wilkinson Foundation for Innovation and Employment to help further the ambitions and careers of young people with dyslexia. He is survived by Cynthia, and his children, Victoria and Gregory.

Pictures tell a story Photographs are invaluable in business Technology is supposed to make our lives simpler. Although it can ‘do’ increasingly advanced things, good technology will undertake these tasks without the need for us to understand complicated instructions or to perform detailed button sequences to see results. But often it still seems too complex, and as a result we overlook the easy ways it can help us. Your mobile phone has a processor that is powerful. Occasionally we make calls with them, but we also text, email, browse the web, use apps, play games, and take selfies with higher resolutions than cameras we bought just a couple of years ago. While these advances have been happening, cameras themselves have become simpler and more powerful, so a high resolution camera with wide angle and zoom can be purchased for less than £100. Have you thought how useful digital photographs could be to your business? Here are four ways to use a camera on your phone, or a simple point and shoot camera, by anyone who visits customer’s homes, whether to design, deliver or
follow up on a complaint. 1 Use pictures to remember. Let estimators, planners, designers, or whatever you call them, take pictures of the rooms they will be working on. They can use these to check that what they’re planning will fit and to spot any features that might not have seemed relevant at an early stage but which suddenly become critical as they work out the plans. 2 Keep a record of success. Use photographs to record that each delivery was made safely. If your delivery teams leave goods without a signature, get them to photograph where they left them, to place on record that the packaging was undamaged, or to show the unpacked item was left in perfect condition. A few seconds each time will save hours on just one query. 3 Let pictures be your eyes. Sometimes you can’t understand what’s gone wrong when you get a complaint. Clear photographs will allow you to get a second opinion and can save the need to arrange an independent inspection if the problem can be identified. Digital pictures are easy to send by email (with
the customer’s permission to avoid any data protection issue) and allow the recipients to get opinions from colleagues if this is needed. 4 Build a portfolio of completed jobs. Show the quality of what you can achieve and let the pictures act as an inspiration to others, helping them in their selection of colours and furnishings and giving them confidence in your company and your teams. Good roomshots, interspersed with details that show craftsmanship and unusual features will be browsed with relish by potential customers. Few customers will refuse permission to let you show off their wise purchase. Customers will even help you themselves. Create a space on your website where they can upload photos to show off their new furnishings. Every picture will tell a positive story that will be read and understood much more quickly than a thousand words of feedback. BEDS AND BEDROOM Bensons started its store makeovers with John Evans Interior Architecture & Design in 2012. The design agency set up je+1 in 2013 and it has opened or reformatted 240 Bensons stores. In response to the success of its original concept design, Bensons saw a 40% uplift in sales across trial stores. The agency has since worked closely with the chain to continually evolve the stores, ensuring they remain current and encompass all developments within the day to day retail operations. With the majority of the store estate having received the initial concept treatment in various formats, je+1 has recently been working with the chain to create a concept for larger format megastores. These new larger format stores in key destinations around the UK allow Bensons to expand on its core ranges and increase choices for customers. The challenge was to create a large format store that allows Bensons to provide a larger focus on the brands available, to redevelop the Comfort Station concept, create specialist product departments and redefine how its core values as the number one bed retailer were communicated. ‚‚‚

BEDS AND BEDROOM At the heart of the store the existing Comfort Station feature was expanded to provide a mattress testing area that includes a range of mattress types alongside its Adaptive Bed system where mattress firmness can be adjusted digitally within a single unit. Leading with bed function at the start of a customer journey, a digital platform that allows exploration of beds most suited to them was created, while also including accompanying products and bedding to be browsed within the same area. Following from that, brand specific spaces throughout the store were created which tell their own story to customers in a format that ‚‚‚

BEDS AND BEDROOM displays varying forms, materials, function, price range and mattress technologies. Each brand space was given its own aesthetic and unique way of communicating their product. Alongside these a new furniture department with furniture design hub was developed. The hub includes range information and wardrobe finish choices with a platform for digital bedroom design configuration, presenting Bensons as a specialist in design as well as mattress function. Additional features were included to physically showcase other new product types such as a developed Kids Zone, Bed-in-a-Box and pillow displays. Throughout the store there are stations to provide interactive digital applications that allow further exploration of products available as an extension of the ranges in-store. There are four megastores now open – White City, Manchester; Middlebrook, Bolton; Aintree, Liverpool; and most recently Lakeside, Essex – with a further three stores planned. Scandinavian scene
‘Woodland Walk captures the tones and textures of an autumnal country walk, creating a cosy living space with warm aubergine and mulberry colours used across chunky knits and patterned textiles. These shades pop against mustard and duck egg blue tones seen on ceramics and home accessories, complementing this classic look for the British home,’ says Andrew Tanner, Sainsbury’s design manager for home and seasonal.
‘Inspired by the Nordic scenery and lifestyle, Nordic Skies exudes contemporary style. Combining muted tones, embossed textures and soft accents of colours, a clean and versatile aesthetic is achieved. Materials such as wood, mercury glass and grey faux fur can be incorporated throughout the home from the dining room to the bedroom. The new cookshop and utility offering marries modern design with function, creating a calming and minimalist nature throughout the home.’

‘Indulge in the glamour and grandeur of the 1920s era with Renaissance Boutique. Opulent textures and this season’s must have tones of vetiver and jewel tone greens are seen throughout this collection with brushed gold and mirrored finishes being incorporated from the bathroom to the bedroom. Home accessories create a sophisticated look with a geometric pattern inspired by ornate patterns gathered from visits to boutique hotels and opulent residences.’
‘Fireside is designed to bring warmth into the home for those hot chocolate evenings by the fire. Classic wintery scenes are hand-painted and illustrated patterns in rich, traditional tones are seen across tableware, bedding and home accessories. Warming textures of chunky knits and faux fur are incorporated into the home with red berry and mistletoe motifs for a nod to the upcoming festive season.’

Housing Units Best Furniture Retailer (1-3 stores) John Lewis Best Furniture Retailer (4 plus stores) John Lewis continues to be a destination for consumers and a sought after account for manufacturers. The chain’s 49th department store, a 120,000sqft branch in Oxford, will open in October. It also has a dozen At Home stores. Leeds and Chelmsford department stores opened in the past year and next year will see openings in Cheltenham and London. It abandoned plans for a Brighton store earlier this year and Paula Nickolds, md, has cast doubt on whether further openings are needed given the continuing growth of online shopping. New full-line department stores cost between £30m and £35m and the chain expects half of sales to be online in three years’ time.
Tapi Best Flooring Retailer (4 plus stores) ‘We have enjoyed a rapid expansion programme, opening our first store in May 2015 to a current portfolio of more than 80 stores, supported by 34 mobile showrooms and an inspirational website,’ says Martin Harris, Tapi chief executive. ‘Tapi measures success as any other retailer, and in this regard we are

Furniture and flooring retailer Housing Units is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. The Failsworth, Manchester, company is investing £3.5m creating retail and dining spaces and £1.5m expanding its distribution centre. ‘A lot has changed since we first opened in 1947, but one thing that has stayed constant is our focus on personalised customer service. Traditional touches, such as being welcomed by our famous doormen on
arrival at the store, remain at the heart of the Housing Units experience,’ says Nick Fox, Housing Units ceo. ‘Through continuing to listen to the customer, and investing in improving their in-store and online shopping experience, we hope for another 70 years of success.’ Pre-tax profits increased by 27.4% to £1.938m in the year to 27 March 2016. Turnover rose by 7.7% to £24.518m. Staff numbers have also risen by 10 to 279.
Kings Best Flooring Retailer (1-3 stores) Founded in 1908, Kings remains family owned and is one of leading carpet and furniture retailers in the East Midlands, offering the largest selection of quality carpets in Nottingham. Kings operates from three branches in the north east, south and west of Nottingham, dealing with all the major brands in the carpet industry. Thanks to its West Bridgford warehouse it bulk buys carpet, underlays and accessories and passes on savings to its customers. Its furniture store is in Beeston, with displays reflecting its proximity to Long Eaton with suppliers including Duresta. delivering double digit like for like percentage sales growth alongside significant enhancement of our gross margin as our buying power increases and our range broadens.’ He says its most important performance indicator is customer satisfaction. ‘Our dedication to placing our customers and their homes at the heart of our business, has earned us a five star rating of excellence on Trust Pilot and 96% of our customers would recommend us to their friends and family.’ Harris adds that ‘97% of our customers find us to be great value.’
Made.com Best Online Retailer Ning Li founded the retailer in 2010 after selling his previous furniture etailer, MyFab. It now employs 300 people, has around £100m of sales, operates across Europe, and is constantly looking for new markets. ‘Our company culture is European but the next step is going global. There’s still a lot of opportunity out there because the Internet has lowered costs,’ he told China Daily. Products are sourced from China, India and Europe and are made to order. He says older people prefer to physically go shopping while younger people research and buy online, only going to the stores to check on an item. ‘This behaviour will grow and there will be great opportunities for digital brands,’ he says. He says he has extreme requirements for detail: ‘The last 10% makes the difference between good and perfect.’ Li recently announced he would step down as chief executive and take on a more advisory role at the company.

Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘To be voted Best UK Flooring Manufacturer caps a very strong year of growth for Furlong Flooring. Thank you to the readers of Interiors Monthly for making it four awards in a row,’ says Mike Symonds, Furlong Flooring director. ‘The key commitments we have made within the business help us to ensure that our customers continue to receive amazing products with levels of service that surpasses all of our competitors.’ Regency Carefree branded carpets, manufactured in Northern Ireland, are now regarded as among the best in the industry and ranges such as Trident and Elegance have set new standards in respect of appearance, wear and warranty, according to Symonds. ‘Millions of pounds of investment in plant, yarn and product development underpins the quality of our products. The level of care each product receives is unsurpassed and means that our carpet products are almost fault free; we have a 0.03% complaint factor. We have such confidence in our products that we provide the industry’s most comprehensive warranty: we will cover for everything except oil-
based paints,’ explains Symonds. In the past 12 months the Regency Carefree carpet portfolio has been extended to include the Essenzo supersoft touch range including Solitaire, Spirito and Aria. ‘We knew that Essenzo products would set the quality benchmark for this category but customer feedback and launch sales have exceeded our ambitious expectations,’ he says. This month will see Furlong Flooring join the Carpet Foundation. ‘Having an organisation that is truly reflective of the entire industry is of tremendous value for retailers and manufacturers alike. We are delighted to be joining the Carpet Foundation, it was a very easy decision for us and adds further value to our retail proposition,’ adds Symonds. Beyond carpets, Furlong Flooring is committed to offering diversity of products. New product ranges have been launched in the Design Elements cushion vinyl range on a new stand design. Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘It’s a real honour to be awarded Best Overseas Furniture Manufacturer for the fifth year in a row,’ says Simon Hewitt, md of German bedroom producer Wiemann’s sole UK and Irish agent, Litmus Furniture. ‘I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of our customers and readers of Interiors Monthly who voted for us and have singled us out for such praise – we’re delighted. ‘After 10 years of selling to the UK, we have a pretty good idea of what hits the spot for both retailers and consumers. We recognise that while design, style, innovation and practicality are all excellent selling points, the real key is first class customer service. We’re constantly looking for ways to improve our offerings and service and maintain our consistency – it’s an ongoing improvement and we won’t stop unless we’re happy. ‘Over the past seven months, we’ve seen Wiemann launch no fewer than 12 exciting ranges and unveil new carcase finishes and innovations. In particular, our feature-packed Kansas range has been a favourite with its auto on-off shelf strip internal lighting and its smooth one-touch auto-opening hinge mechanism – something very rare in the bedroom market,’ he says. The VIP collection, Sita, is also proving
to be a big hit thanks to its striking open compartment feature, allowing consumers to transform their storage space and create a stunning bedroom feature. The company has also seen great interest in its sliding wardrobe range Westside, with its large selection of widths, door options and its smart synchronised opening. This year has also seen a new look website with a more modern feel and design, making it easier to navigate and introducing new features such as an in-depth product search facility. ‘If you haven’t seen some of this year’s exciting new feature-packed introductions yet, then come and catch up with us at one of the September shows we’re hosting in our showroom in Long Eaton for the Autumn Long Point from 18-21 September and at Minerva’s Autumn Furniture Show at Stoneleigh Park, near Kenilworth, from 26-27 September’, adds Hewitt. ‘Our team of experienced UK agents across eight territories ensure our retail customers get personal service. We aim to support them from start to finish with our UK administrative office and our direct delivery and installation service available to all UK and Republic of Ireland stockists.’ Visit: www.wiemannuk.co.uk

‘We’re absolutely delighted to have spent a decade at the top. This is the 10th year we’ve been voted your Best Overseas Flooring Manufacturer and for that we would like to say a huge thank you to all the readers of Interiors Monthly. Not only have you recognised our diverse array of carpet ranges, but our efforts to provide you with exceptional service that keeps you coming back to us year after year,’ says Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta Group marketing director. ‘With the introduction of the Leonis collection of supersoft carpets late last year, we’ve worked hard to make sure that our retailers are equipped with great brands, as well as carpets that keep in line with the latest in consumer buying trends. What’s more, with our latest generation of ultra-soft fibres reaching the final stages of development, we’re continuing to push the boundaries and developing collections that will leave others playing catch-up.’ Vanden Bossche is quick to point out

Interiors Monthly August 2017
A truly great British success story, for more than 60 years Cormar Carpets has been manufacturing carpet in the UK from its mills in Lancashire and today it’s estimated that more than one million consumers choose a Cormar carpet every year. The company is regarded as one of the leading UK carpet manufacturers thanks to its quality ranges, excellent customer service and a fast, reliable delivery service. It has grown over the years to become a multi-million pound business, while remaining family owned. ‘Everyone at Cormar Carpets is delighted to have been voted Best Carpet Manufacturer for the fifth year running, and thanks go to the readers of Interiors Monthly,’ says David Cormack, Cormar Carpets marketing director, whose father Neville Cormack founded the business. ‘At Cormar, we constantly strive to excel and improve in every part of our business: from customer service and production to sales and marketing. To win this award again is a great achievement, but we are not going to rest on our laurels.’ This year, Cormar is investing in a new
130,000sqft distribution centre in Hemel Hempstead, which will consolidate and strengthen its regional hub network across the South of England. It will sit alongside the company’s existing outbase depots, providing additional support to current facilities in the loading bay and cut lengths department at Cormar’s Brookhouse Mill site in Greenmount, Bury. Over the past 12 months, Cormar has experienced strong growth across its portfolio of carpets with the launch of heavyweight heather twist, Highland Saxony, and the supersoft easy clean Soft Focus – plus the recolouration of some of its bestselling ranges, Sensation and Primo Ultra. ‘We never stand still,’ says Cormack. ‘With the ever changing market, we have to stay one step ahead and are constantly producing new quality ranges and overhauling established ones to ensure that Cormar’s product offering is what the consumer wants or needs.’ Cormar runs a distribution fleet of more than 60 vehicles, delivering to retailers, contractors and wholesalers on a daily basis. Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘We’re just happy that our campaigns and efforts are coming to fruition,’ says Pomi Khan, Mlily SVP of marketing and UK ceo on being voted Best New Supplier. ‘We’re really in the beginning stages of our brand building, and we have some exciting opportunities ahead.’ One of those opportunities has been linking up with its partner Manchester United on the team’s pre-season tour in the USA. ‘It’s been great for exposure,’ says Khan. ‘From having our commercials played in all of the stadiums, to the success of local and national marketing campaigns, press interviews, player appearances and more, our plans are really taking off for the future.’ Already doubling its UK business from
last year, Mlily continues to expand its operations and presence both globally and domestically. ‘It’s a lucrative time for our retailers,’ says Bob Badman, Mlily UK sales director. ‘With all of our marketing campaigns alongside the Manchester United partnership, we’re growing consumer awareness ourselves. That’s helping to drive sales and growth across all of our regions.’ ‘Combining a mattress technology that’s tailored to performance with the elite athletes of a global organisation has been a winning strategy so far, and the United-Mlily partnership is still only in its first year. The outlook is very bright for our young brand,’ adds Kahn. Visit: www.mlily.uk

Interiors Monthly August 2017
Interiors Monthly readers have voted Julian Bowen the industry’s number one for customer service for the third year in a row. ‘We are immensely proud to have received again such a strong vote of confidence from the industry. Our whole business is set up to deliver the very best experience for our customers and we are delighted that the hard work of our staff has been recognised in this way,’ says Emmett Lenaghan, Julian Bowen md. Julian Bowen recognises the importance of customer service by offering a complete package to meet customer needs. It delivers to the customer on direct container and multidrops delivered by its commercial fleet. There is also a growing demand for overnight collections. All orders received on the same day until 2pm are picked, labelled and loaded by a dedicated team on to the designated carrier for delivery to the consumer the following day. The company is experiencing a significant growth in demand from new and existing customers for its direct home delivery/assembly service. It is a fully responsible door to door, room of choice two-man service, offering the retailer and consumer a trouble-free experience. Julian Bowen prides itself on having courteous staff and a highly efficient IT infrastructure that enables customers to
receive an overnight/ hourly stock feed to ensure they have full transparency of the product stock position. The company is focused on service, boasting 95% of the range in stock, currently £5.5m at trade prices. Investment continues across the business to ensure customers receive the highest quality furniture at the best possible prices. It has its own quality control representatives in all countries in which it operates, enabling it to work with its suppliers to ensure that all new products are developed to the firm’s exacting standards, while performing constant quality control checks throughout the manufacturing process. ‘Our supply chain is a real point of value-added differentiation for the business. It gives us the chance to work more closely with our chosen manufacturing partners to ensure that we continue to create beautiful products of the highest quality across all the price points at which we sell,’ observes Lenaghan. The business remains grounded in one key principle: ‘It’s all about the customers. Everything we do is driven by a desire to exceed their expectations. We recognise the ever demanding needs of our customers and will continue to work hard to improve every aspect of the service we provide,’ adds Lenaghan. Visit: www.julian-bowen.co.uk

Associated Weavers Best Customer Service (Flooring)
Many of Associated Weavers’ ranges are available in multi-width variants
50
Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘The readers of Interiors Monthly are choosy about the carpet manufacturers they associate with. That’s why, at Associated Weavers, we like to live up to the implied meaning of our name with the quality of service that we provide and were delighted that Interiors Monthly readers have awarded us with this year’s Best Customer Service (Flooring) award,’ says Steve Elliott, Associated Weavers md. Associated Weavers has a justifiable reputation for an original approach to carpet manufacturing and retailing. This was evidenced last year when its then newly-launched Invictus range, with its unique Maori brand imagery, won the Interiors Monthly Innovation of the Year. The company is just as confident that this year’s new Vivendi collection will receive industry plaudits. It was created to meet the increasing consumer demand for products that perform faultlessly in every room in the home. ‘In fact, we’re so confident that Vivendi will meet – and exceed – your expectations, we’ve given it our best-ever double warranty assurance of 25 years for stain and wear issues – another valuable selling point for retailers.’ But it’s not just an extensive product range that makes the company stand out from the crowd. It has also established a reputation for market-leading displays, incorporating stunning lectern units and
graphics, to stop customers in their tracks. Plus, many of its ranges are available in multi-width variants of 2m, 2.5m, 3m, 4m and 5m to add to their practicality and appeal. ‘To maintain our position in the market, we never underestimate the importance of good service. In part we are able to achieve and maintain our standards by being very selective about the high street partners that we supply. The more well known a retailer is with its customers, the more those consumers expect to receive reputable and reliable products. We know that the Associated Weavers range lives up to these expectations,’ he says. ‘We treat every customer as our most important customer. From the minute our sales team is contacted, to the ensuing delivery logistics, we make every effort to provide an enviable service.’ This year in particular is seeing the results of radical improvements to the company’s transport fleet throughout the UK. With increased numbers of vehicles, deliveries can now be made twice a week, for both rolls and cuts. It has also improved its deliveries to Northern Ireland and the more remote areas of the UK. ‘Service is the keyword at Associated Weavers that keeps the company at the forefront of the carpet world,’ he adds. AIS Best Furniture Buying Group
Associated Independent Stores (AIS) is the leading independent buying group for home and fashion in the UK and Republic of Ireland with around 250 retail members buying £500m of product through the group of which furniture represents the largest sector at over £200m. Among those members are some of the leading independent furniture retailers and department stores in the country such as Jarrold, Sterling, Ponsford, Stokers and Glasswells. ‘Our members are diverse in their scale and market positioning but all gain advantage from buying benefits and other forms of support. Key to our success are the buying relationships that we facilitate with our valued furniture suppliers to develop exclusive products, at key price points for the members,’ says Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director – home. ‘New products are launched at our buying shows and we work hard on updating all offers ready for the next season. However, over and above improving our members’ bottom line through collective buying power, AIS also adds value in many other ways making AIS more than just a buying group.’
Mallinson says a key AIS element is exclusive products and brands sourced from the UK and Europe to the Far East. ‘We work hard on developing exclusive product that members want to put on the floor. Our suppliers work with us to find winners and we have some very successful examples of branded exclusives from the likes of Parker Knoll, G Plan, TCH, Classic Furniture, Alstons, Baker Furniture and Duresta to name a few. We also have own-brand ranges such as Dreamworld beds with a comprehensive range across broad price points, as well as two own cabinet brands Stag and Ducal.’ AIS acquired the latter two brands a few years ago exclusively for its members and they have a strong heritage that has appeal for retailers and customers alike – even more so now that AIS has successfully updated and repositioned them for today’s market.

Buying shows are core to what AIS does across all its product areas and it hosts two specialist furniture buying shows a year, as well as two bed shows and an annual flooring show. The largest of these is The AIS Furniture Show, which takes place at Cranmore Park in Solihull in January, and is an eagerly anticipated show by both its members and the wider industry, as the final two days are open to non-members when it runs in parallel with the January Furniture Show at the NEC. Next year, the second furniture show in the AIS calendar, for members only, will be brought forward to June 2018, a time that is felt to be more relevant and useful for suppliers and members.
AIS hosts two furniture shows
The January 2017 show saw the launch of a new concept for members: Five Key Looks, conceived to help members create more aesthetically impactful in-store displays and generate add on sales. Mallinson and his team were excited to develop this new initiative because, as he says: ‘We all know the best retailers create inspirational and aspirational instore displays, showing customers an interior style that they can recreate at home. Those important finishing touches can result in increasing conversion and also raise average transaction values with great add-on sales. This is another great example of AIS bringing added value to its members and raising standards in the industry.’ There are five different themes to appeal to all customer demographics and living styles, presented and merchandised with current on-trend
interior designs: Industrial, Hotel Boutique, Scandi, Country and Classics, that makes it easy for members to replicate in store.
Five Key Looks: Country
AIS isn’t only member focused but also believes in strong supplier relationships for mutual benefit. It has a dedicated Partnership Trading team that actively seeks to help both members and suppliers achieve a profitable and efficient working relationship. It negotiates service level agreements with suppliers to ensure service and quality levels are achieved, and also administers annual awards for suppliers based on several criteria that are much sought after.

Further examples of where AIS goes beyond its core remit is in professional support in other services such as marketing, training and personnel. It also has a central procurement service for non-retail goods and services. This division can work on behalf of members across almost any category such as insurance, delivery vehicles, utility contracts and energy saving to deliver big savings to help the bottom line. Interiors Monthly August 2017
The Metro Group has been serving independent retailers for almost 40 years from the smallest one-man operation to multiple outlet businesses. Created to protect the smaller retailer from the buying power of the multiples, Metro has developed with the times to provide its members with an increasing portfolio of services and benefits. Retaining independence is vital to Metro members, which is why all group activity is optional not obligatory. This allows members to select the best benefits of membership while being 100% in control of their own businesses. Metro works by negotiating the lowest possible prices from leading suppliers as a £50m group as opposed to an individual retailer. As well as access to preferential terms and promotions, a key feature to membership is the ability to share information and business issues with like-minded retailers at area meetings or directly. Since 1995 the group has developed an own-label brand, Carpet 1st,
encompassing the bestselling and performing products. Professional own branding protects margins, especially from online selling, and members can maximise their profits while supporting the group and authorised suppliers. Members can use the group’s Carpet 1st label, or take advantage of the bespoke marketing service. Its marketing department with over 30 years of flooring experience also offers a mobile marketing studio. This service allows retailer’s showrooms to be transformed, with no job too big or small, from simple price cards to entire shop fascias. This service not only supports Carpet 1st, but also any aspect of a member’s business, including bespoke design, print, POS, internal displays and external signage created at low cost for any purpose. The group has developed a dedicated customer-focused and internal website and promotion via social media. Visit: www.carpet1st.co.uk

Greenwood Retail Best Business Support (Furniture)
Retailers can expect to generate from 25% to 50% of annual sales turnover during a threeweek Greenwood sale
56
Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘It is with pride and honour that I accept the Best Business Support (Furniture) award, on behalf of all the team here at Greenwood. Thank you all so much,’ says Bernard Eaton, Greenwood Retail md. Greenwood has been at the forefront of professional retail sales promotion in the UK and Republic of Ireland since its foundation in 2002. Deploying Greenwood’s highly effective sales strategies along with its powerful copyrighted marketing materials, retailers can expect to generate from 25% to 50% of their normal annual sales turnover during a three-week Greenwood promotional sale. Almost all of its clients are quality independent retailers of non-food goods. The Greenwood sale plans work especially well for retailers of furniture and furnishings, carpets and flooring,
homewares, garden products and DIY, giftware, fashion and jewellery. Many of Greenwood’s clients are members of AIS and Minerva. ‘The uncertainty of the Brexit vote and the general election has caused a significant downturn in big ticket and non-essential spending. However, now that Brexit talks are under way and as the mood of the nation settles down, we are experiencing record enquiries. We are now almost fully booked for 2017 and are now recruiting more event managers for 2018,’ he says. ‘They say it’s never too early to book your Greenwood sale. Booking in advance guarantees exclusivity for the season before and during your Greenwood sale within your own market territory,’ adds Eaton. Visit: www.greenwoodretail.com

SMG Best Business Support (Flooring)
SMG has a wide range of business support for members
58
Interiors Monthly August 2017
SMG has something for every retailer, large or small, long established or just starting out. Members run their business as they see fit but gain advantage from the comprehensive package of benefits on offer. ‘Independent retailers are attracted to joining SMG as the group guarantees that members can retain their complete independence but at the same time benefit from preferential discounts, rebate schemes and promotions from a comprehensive range of approved suppliers. Not only that, they can access products from any approved supplier via our Central Purchasing Scheme, even without a direct account,’ says Mike Reed, SMG head of group operations. As well as access to and preferential terms with flooring manufacturers, SMG offers members the chance to sell ownbranded product without the need to commit to complete rebranding of their store. With new products being frequently added and with the ability to own-brand for retailers as required, there is always something new to add to the retailer’s arsenal. With the group now representing more than 380 retail outlets in the UK, not only is SMG adding to the flooring proposition regularly, it has developed a comprehensive business support
package that rewards flooring retailers too. ‘Not only do members benefit from great terms but SMG offers a business support package that is second to none. With a free of charge business support helpline, bespoke SMG retail insurance, discounted utility brokerage and preferential credit card rates as well as amazing discounts on purchase and leasing of company vehicles, it really is an all round great deal,’ says Reed. The business support elements alone have helped save significant amounts of money for members and this service is guaranteed to save them even more which has been a factor in membership recruitment this year. ‘The key driver for SMG has always been to create profitable partnerships between members and approved suppliers. They have the same goals and SMG is able to deliver more sales and greater profitability for both. As if all this weren’t enough, SMG is also extremely proud to be able to offer members the opportunity to buy furniture and beds from some of the top manufacturers in the market. This gives our members the opportunity to diversify or to link sell furnishings to their customers,’ adds Reed. Visit: www.smg-group.co.uk

Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘We are delighted to have been voted as offering Best Marketing Support (Flooring) by readers of Interiors Monthly. Receiving this award is a tremendous honour and the result of a great deal of hard work and dedication by the entire Flooring One team,’ says Mandy Powell, Flooring One manager. ‘Flooring One now represents 137 members from 208 outlets providing a comprehensive membership package that will assist any retailer. Our relationship with our members and suppliers is paramount to our business.’ Flooring One is the specialist carpet and floorcoverings division of Associated Independent Stores, which is the largest independent non-food buying group of its kind in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Overall the group has close to 350 members with about 1,300 stores and a combined retail turnover of over £2bn. It supports independent retailers ranging from single high street shops to flagship department stores and specialist retailers across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Included within the group are specialist divisions such as Intersport and Playroom. Marketing support covers a large range of items including a
comprehensive marketing manual with roomset images, lifestyle photography and advertising templates. It also produces a rug manual featuring bestsellers and current on-trend rugs, again with beautiful photography. All images for both manuals are available on a DVD to help support retailers with all their marketing requirements. ‘We are supported by a dedicated, proactive member marketing division offering a variety of services to members. The division regularly produces material such as seasonal and event POS themes, as well as promotional customer facing leaflets and brochures. Many of these items can be customised to meet an individual member’s specific needs. Within the team there are also Internet specialists who can advise members in these areas and help with digital marketing support,’ explains Powell. In May it hosts the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show at Cranmore Park in Solihull. Working with all the major flooring buying groups, over 60 of the leading brands converge, showcasing the very latest in carpets, rugs, laminate, wood, vinyl, LVT, underlays and accessories. Renowned for crafting bespoke beds for retailers and the hospitality industry alike, Hypnos has been voted Best Bed Manufacturer (Upmarket) in recognition of its outstanding customer service, sustainable innovation, commercial success and the quality of its products. Sealy Best Bed Manufacturer (Mid-market)
Sealy Teramo 1400

Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘Sealy is delighted to win the Best Bed Manufacturer (Mid-market) award; a highly sought-after accolade,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy sales and marketing director. In addition, prestigious consumer champion Which? has named Sealy’s Posturepedic Pocket Teramo 1400 it’s Best Buy for the third year running, claiming that: ‘more than a year on, we’re still yet to test anything that can match it.’ The continued accolade – first awarded to the Teramo in 2015 – is set to make choosing a mattress a whole lot easier, providing consumers with an authoritative stamp of approval. In achieving Which? Best Buy status, the Teramo 1400 received Best in Test status – the highest score in its category when tested against 28 other products – including a whole host of other types of mattresses and pocket sprung models. The review goes on to state that the Teramo will ‘still be in great condition
and able to support your body well even after years of use. Unlike some mattresses, it doesn’t sag or become less firm over time.’ Teramo was also commended for its softness and the solid support it provides, with the tests also revealing that it is very easy to turn over on, while being stable enough to not disturb a partner. The report also highlighted the model’s breathable materials – Sealy’s Smart Fibres and Eco-friendly Tencel – make for a cool sleep environment. ‘It has been a great period for Sealy and we’re delighted with these two incredible accolades. How fantastic to hear that retailers and Which? value Sealy products so highly. One thing’s for sure, the Which? Best Buy review and Best Bed Manufacturer (Mid-market) award will certainly make the difficult task of choosing a mattress much easier, and cement Sealy’s enviable position in the market,’ adds Robinson. ‘We are delighted to have been voted the Best Fabric/Soft Furnishings Manufacturer for the second year in a row by Interiors Monthly readers, and would like to sincerely thank them for this great accolade and for their ongoing support in bringing our products to life for their customers,’ says David Walker, Sanderson sales director. As one of the oldest standing brands in the field, Sanderson is proud of the fact that all of its designs start life as a beautifully detailed drawing or painting by their talented in-house team of designers, who are creating timeless designs for modern family living. It is really important to the company that all of its printed fabrics and wallpapers are still produced in the UK by its sister factories. ‘As part of the Style Library portfolio of brands our mission is to “Inspire Creative Living” in all. In an ever-changing marketplace, we are constantly looking for ways to work in partnership with our trade customers to help them offer interior solutions to their customers,’ says Walker. ‘English Country Style continues to be
our signature look, often inspired by nature. Sanderson Home’s summer collection, The Potting Room, has a charming handcrafted, relaxed country feel, inspired by our love of all things home grown. ‘For AW17 we look forward to Chiswick Grove, an understated elegant collection of subtle easy to use damasks, foliage and textures, inspired by archive documents from Sanderson’s original wallpaper factory in Chiswick, discretely introducing work by some of the leading artists of the 19th century. A beautifully curated colour palette is the thread that links all of the ranges, making it easy to create elegant living spaces,’ says Walker. This is supported by the highly acclaimed Sanderson paints for which exciting new colours are to be launched in 2018. This summer sees the opening of a new state of the art flagship showroom at the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour under the Style Library banner, where the Sanderson team looks forward to greeting its trade customers to offer inspiration and advice. Interiors Monthly August 2017
Rowico UK would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who voted for it as Best Living Room Manufacturer. ‘We are extremely pleased to receive this incredible recognition: this award means a huge amount to the entire Rowico team. We continue to pride ourselves on the products we design, develop and manufacture,’ says Caroline Henchcliffe, Rowico UK, UK business director. Rowico returned to the Manchester Furniture Show this year launching three collections and two chairs. Renowned for its lifestyle imagery, the stand did not fail to deliver as it had designed a striking black branded display structure with stunning industrial lighting to entice. The structure showcased Wootton: a living and dining collection in polished wood, highlighting parquet patterned surfaces with a unique and individual style. Rowico extended the Warwick family
to include Warwick Bedroom and Warwick Natural. Warwick Bedroom creates soft statement pieces with the combination of subtle grey hues and meandering curves. Warwick Natural allows the detailing of the wood to shine through in a soft waxed finish. The meandering curves are complemented by the contours of the wood, allowing the pewter hardware to add a soft contrast and a modern finish to this elegant collection. Stealing the show was Vicky, a new plush velvet chair in three vibrant shades; Golden Lime, Prussian Blue and Smoky Charcoal. It has a choice of three leg finishes: black matte, vintage grey and natural wood. A firm favourite with the crowds at the show, Vicky shared the limelight with Bella, a new dining chair available in three calming neutral shades highlighted with studded detailing. Interiors Monthly August 2017
Interfloor says it is delighted to be voted Best Underlay Manufacturer by Interiors Monthly readers as it recognises the company’s commitment to delivering high quality products coupled with exceptional customer service. ‘Interfloor is built on a rich British manufacturing heritage which includes a number of UK and world firsts, and two of the UK’s oldest flooring brands: Duralay and Tredaire. Our commitment to maintaining and improving products and standards in the worldwide floorcovering industry continues to be the driving force of our business and the focus for our teams,’ says John Cooper, Interfloor ceo. It’s been a busy year for the company with a key highlight being the refresh of the look of Interfloor’s heritage brands, Duralay and Tredaire, with a more contemporary style. Retailers have been positive about the new POS materials, including a merchandising stand and a catalogue, designed to help them promote underlay products by giving them interactive and informative tools to use as part of the in-store sales process. Interfloor has also taken steps to ensure it can satisfy demand from
retailers, particularly at peak times. ‘To secure our position as the number one underlay manufacturer of choice, we invested in an additional 130,000sqft of warehouse space and increased manufacturing capacity to ensure enough stock would be available in the very busy run-up to Christmas and beyond,’ explains Gary Cowley, Interfloor sales director. Product innovations have included the launch of Interfloor’s highest density PU underlay range, Tredaire Premium High Density, in response to market demand for firmer and more luxurious products suitable for use in all areas of the home. ‘The introduction of the Premium High Density range demonstrates our ongoing commitment to listening to our customers and providing them with the very best choice of quality and value for money flooring products,’ says Cooper. ‘I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their continued support and to assure them of my team’s ongoing dedication to the type of product and service innovations that will help our customers to grow their businesses profitably,’ he adds. Woodpecker Flooring Best Solid/ Engineered Wood Manufacturer

Interiors Monthly August 2017
The Woodpecker Flooring team is thrilled to be recognised by Interiors Monthly readers as the Best Solid/Engineered Wood Manufacturer, and thanks readers for their votes. Darwyn Ker, Woodpecker md, is delighted by the support of customers: ‘We are honoured to earn this industry award and it is received with much appreciation. It demonstrates the confidence and trust that the industry puts in us as best in class. Thank you to all who voted for us. We are committed to continuing to outperform your expectations in the future.’ Woodpecker’s heritage in the timber industry goes back three generations. The company was founded in 1975 by a skilled craftsman who loved teaching people how to work with wood. The tradition was carried on and in 2003, that huge reserve of skills was applied to manufacturing high quality flooring. Understanding the different tree species, honing the grading process and using centuries old techniques to expertly finish every floor, are the skills
Woodpecker has worked hard to perfect over the years, and is still just as passionate about today. Woodpecker floors are inspired by spaces that we love to spend time in outdoors. Whether it’s a stroll along the beach or a barefoot walk among the trees, the designs remind us of being close to nature. Each collection borrows the tones and textures of these natural environments, bringing a warm and relaxing atmosphere to the home. The Woodpecker range features solid wood, engineered, bamboo and laminate floors in a selection of dimensions, finishes and fitting options. The new 2017 catalogue can also be downloaded from the company’s website, introducing lots of new carefully crafted and naturally inspired designs. Look out for a Scandinavian-inspired chevron floor along with rustic parquet and dark oak planks. Further highlights include the beautifully timeworn details of Berkeley Cottage Oak and Stormy Oak, a deep and moody blend of greyish blue. Visit: www.woodpeckerflooring.co.uk

‘Once is an honour. Twice is significant. But to win Interiors Monthly’s Best Recliner Manufacturer award three times in as many years is momentous, especially as the award is voted for by Interiors Monthly readers. It proves that our dedication to innovation and quality makes himolla extremely popular among consumers,’ says Sandra Gabler, himolla UK and Ireland country manager. ‘Our market leading position represents the culmination of almost 70 years of technological advances, coupled with sophisticated contemporary design. But today’s innovations would leave even our earlier designers and craftsmen speechless. ‘Our latest technology includes a voice
activated recliner that responds to audible commands; no need to even press a button to relax. Launched at the Cologne and Las Vegas shows earlier in the year, the coming generation of voiceoperated chairs will be even more advanced. The slim designs presented at Milan this year look set to steal the limelight at European shows, and may be coming to the UK in the near future. ‘Something that hasn’t relaxed is the popularity of our powered recliner range. Sales are consistently high and rising throughout the UK and Ireland. An accolade every bit as impressive as winning Interiors Monthly’s award,’ adds Gabler. Email: sandra.gabler@himolla.com

La-Z-Boy Best Leather Upholstery Manufacturer

86
Interiors Monthly August 2017
For the second year running, La-Z-Boy UK has won the Best Leather Upholstery Manufacturer award, as voted for by Interiors Monthly readers. This year has been one of change for the company, starting with establishing a new company in January – La-Z-Boy UK – after the licence for the brand was reacquired by La-Z-Boy Incorporated in the USA. Headed up by md Keith Wilson, La-Z-Boy UK has embarked upon an integrated marketing campaign, with a focus on growing its independent business. A key element of this strategy is the launch of its Originals Collection, featuring an abundance of high specification features and reintroducing a range of the ‘one and only’ patented La-Z-Boy handle recliner for the first time in 10 years.
Last month the first La-Z-Boy UK galleries opened around the country, featuring branded areas with bespoke POS to display the new Originals Collection. Wilson explains that the collection is intended to offer exclusive brand benefits to independent stores. ‘The Originals Collection has been months in the planning, to ensure our highest ever quality in a high street range that offers retailers real, tangible sales messages for their customers. One of these is, of course, the fact that our leather models are 100% full leather with no use of splits, which epitomises the quality and durability that the brand offers and makes it doubly pleasing to win this award. ‘Additionally, all seat cushions feature edge to edge pocket springs, for a more consistently comfortable sit. This is more

AWARDS
than twice the pocket-sprung seating area of any previous La-Z-Boy UK collection,’ he says. Each of the six ranges in the Originals Collection is available as a handle recliner, power recliner or static model, each also featuring a rocker recliner chair or power swivel chair. Every model can be purchased in any of the new swatch selection, featuring 70 fabrics and four grades of leather in 56 colourways. La-Z-Boy’s handle recline mechanism allows a unique relaxation experience. The backrest and footrest work independently to allow a personalised reclining position. A ratchet mechanism allows the user to comfortably slide the seat forward while the backrest moves in harmony with the body, meaning the lumbar region is fully supported at all times. The three-position handle can then be used to select a footrest position.
A four-sided frame gives the handle products additional strength and durability, and adjustable wingnuts allow for the ideal tension to be reached for individual users. The handle is branded and is available in a wood or chrome finish, for further personalisation. ‘We believe this new collection offers customers more choice than any other upholstery range on the market, when it comes to being able to personalise a variety of motion options,’ Wilson says. ‘The Originals Collection is designed to offer customers the ultimate La-Z-Boy experience available on the high street. This begins with the bespoke branded POS display, which includes a video detailing the company history, values and product benefits. ‘We are also finalising a new product training programme for salespeople, to ensure customers have all the
information they need to be able to make a decision on the best La-Z-Boy product for their needs.’ More than 70 La-Z-Boy galleries have opened throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland, each stocking at least 20 seats of the six Originals Collection ranges. A new UK website has also just been launched, featuring a modern look, plus features including a stockist and gallery locator tool, blog and FAQ section. ‘We’ll soon be launching our showroom at our headquarters in Maidenhead and we’re also currently ordering in priority stock of our Originals Collection which will be available in October. We will be contacting stockists directly to let them know more information about models which will be available on a priority lead time of four week delivery or less,’ adds Wilson. Karndean Designflooring has been at the forefront of design leadership and innovation, supplying authentic luxury vinyl wood and stone designs for more than 40 years. With more than 250 designs to choose from, Karndean Designflooring is inspired by nature and recognised for replicating the intricate details and textures of real wood and stone. ‘We’re delighted to be recognised in such a highly sought after award category,’ says Scott Cochrane, Karndean Designflooring retail sales director. ‘It’s a true testament to the growth of our brand and the continued support we receive from our independent retail network, and we would like to thank our retail partners and the industry for this special accolade.’ The award follows Karndean’s highly anticipated and latest innovation, Korlok. The rigid core flooring collection can be installed over most existing hard surface floors or uneven subfloors, thanks to its K-Core technology. Its 5G click locking mechanism and pre-attached acoustic foam backing allow fast and simple installation and enhanced acoustic properties.
With 12 new authentic wood designs (1,420mm x 225mm) inspired by European and North American woods, Korlok can also reduce noise transfer to rooms below by up to 19dB, without the need for separate underlay. ‘Unlike other rigid core products and click laminate flooring, Korlok can be scored and snapped for easy installation like our established gluedown and Karndean LooseLay ranges. The familiar click-locking system and enhanced core technology means installers can achieve an authentic and luxurious floor in any space without the need for adhesive and with minimal subfloor preparation, making it ideal for busy homeowners or families looking for less upheaval and disruption. Importantly for our retailer network, Korlok offers a new flooring solution for any type of subfloor with a wide array of premium wood designs to choose from,’ adds Cochrane. Quieter than traditional laminate and warmer underfoot than real wood, Korlok is waterproof, easy to clean and maintain, and compatible with underfloor heating. Korlok offers a lifetime residential guarantee. Visit: www.karndean.com

Interiors Monthly August 2017
Colour is key as we move further into 2017. Consumers are getting much braver with their colour choices and as the trickle down of trends between fashion and interiors closes, there is an appetite for refreshing current colour in the home. The Room concept by Ashley Manor brings a passion for colour across an eclectic mix of shapes. For the more faint of heart, accent pieces such as occasional chairs are the ideal way to inject a pop of colour into a relatively neutral scheme and with the addition of texture too, such as Ashley Manor’s latest rope twist embossed velvet, this becomes even more impactful. Add a mix of footstools and you can see pattern is playful and shapes unique. Hexagonal mixes with round and when seen together in a plethora of shades the effect is a happy, colourful one. Modern living is becoming an altogether more petite affair. Rooms and
houses are getting smaller and so furniture with more modest proportions, neater arms and dinkier seats will start to grow in importance. We don’t only live in our living rooms – kitchens, conservatories, halls and bedrooms are well trafficked and ideal spaces to make a statement. The Room concept comprises: Chelsea, Pimlico and Camden. They include a mix of sleek lined shapes, vintage styling and fluting, alongside chic modern midcentury designs. Additions such as elegant gold legs allow the consumer to indulge in the latest trend led metallic shades and combine it with wood finishes on other pieces. The Camden modular group can grow from a neat sofa to a cleverly designed chaise and footstool combination. Items can be added piece by piece to shape the collection to suit lifestyle and budget. Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘With the Leoline and Avenue cushion vinyl flooring brands, IVC Group is at the top of its game when it comes to delivering high quality vinyl flooring for the home. Nevertheless, it’s an honour to be awarded Best Vinyl Manufacturer by the readers of Interiors Monthly, for the ninth year,’ says Victoria Hemelaer, IVC product manager. IVC Group has built on innovation, making sure its designs and specifications offer retailers an incredible choice of cushion vinyl. Made to the highest standards at its European plants, some of the most efficient in the world, its cushion vinyl floors are among the most feature-packed available. This innovation in research and development is represented nowhere better than in the Ultimate Expressions collection from Avenue. A floor with high levels of sound absorption, thermal insulation and underfoot comfort, Ultimate Expressions also includes some of IVC’s most impressive trend-focused designs. These decors prove it is willing to make bold moves to break new ground. The striking 3D wood-effect hexagon of Audrey, stone hexagon of Goldie, limewashed wood herringbone of Stuttgart and chevron of Greta, as well as the almost impressionistic tile of Brazza; come together to deliver a truly impressive collection of styles. The company has also invested heavily in making sure its network of retailers is supported to the best of its ability, launching not one, but two websites within the past year. Offering a free
sample service, as well as a stockist finder and packed full of consumerfocused information, these brandfocused websites are crucial in making sure the Leoline and Avenue brands remain in the forefront of homeowners’ minds when it comes to choosing their next cushion vinyl floor. Its recently launched social media campaign and appearances in the home interest press also help to make sure that Leoline and Avenue remain ever-present to consumers across the UK. Purpose-built displays continue the brand presentation. Supported by a busy team of merchandisers and found in stores spreading to every corner of the country, each display is packed full of cushion vinyl flooring that brings some of the best value around. No matter what the budget, with Avenue and Leoline homeowners can find the floor they want and retailers can rest safe in the knowledge that they have the power and reliability of IVC Group behind them. ‘A huge thank you to the readers of Interiors Monthly for voting us Best Vinyl Manufacturer. We’re also delighted our LVT brand, Moduleo, has been awarded Best Website (Flooring). Together with Avenue and Leoline, as well as commercial vinyl in Itec Contract Floors, our family of brands brings the power of IVC Group to homes and businesses across the country. We promise to keep innovating to make sure we stay your favourite for years to come,’ says Hemelaer. Visit: www.leoline.co.uk www.avenuefloors.co.uk

Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘As a two-time award winner for our furniture protection plans and products, Guardsman continues to see business go from strength to strength. Maintaining our position as market leader, our core focus remains the same: keeping the consumer at the heart of all we do,’ says Phil Griffin, Guardsman md. ‘Caring for our consumers is our top priority as we focus on ensuring we deliver the best possible support to our retail partners. Our aim is to provide them with all the tools they need to develop their business and retain their loyal customers.’ One of Guardsman’s key tools is ongoing support from dedicated account managers, explains Griffin. ‘Having the most directly employed account managers in the industry means I am confident in our capability to provide excellent in-store support, including regular sales training. This support enables retailers to expand and develop their offering, increase sales’ profit opportunities and enhance their customers’ experience.’ While the company is looking to wow its customers with exceptional service, it is not just its retail partners who are impressed. ‘We are passionate about sticking to our commitment to deliver a
world-class service, ensuring our partners have happy, satisfied customers and this is certainly endorsed by recent reviews,’ he says. ‘Rated 4/5 stars and “great” on consumer review site, Trustpilot and 3.6/5 on Google, Guardsman is leading the way in consumer satisfaction. One review includes: “From the first point of call to the repair, everyone was polite and professional I really couldn’t ask for more”.’ Guardsman provides extensive coverage across an innovative range of flexible protection plans. This ensures it is able to meet consumers’ diverse needs. Uniquely, Guardsman covers unlimited damage caused by children and animals, two of the main causes according to its comprehensive consumer research. ‘At a time when retailers may be seeing lower footfall we view it as the perfect opportunity to seize time with the consumer and add value to their journey. We are committed to maintaining that high level of service. From creating consumer-focused materials, to ensuring every member of sales staff is selling compliantly, we provide all the tools to add value to our partners’ offering, while protecting their brand,’ adds Griffin. Castelan Group Best Warranty Provider
About 2,500 warranty calls are handled every week and Furniture Care Network technicians are sent out within five working days and have a resolution rate of more than 95%

Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘Castelan Group is delighted to have been recognised by the industry as the Best Warranty Provider for 2017. This, combined with winning Best Product Protection Provider in 2016, demonstrates that we continue to offer products that are delivering what our clients expect but, of great importance, what the end user expects,’ says Richard Gretton, Castelan commercial director. Selling protection plans at the point of sale is just the starting point of the journey for the customer and the delivery of those promises comes at the point of crisis when the customer needs to make a claim. ‘It’s only then that the true value is realised and only then that the benefit of partnering with Castelan Group shines through. The levels of service that customers expect can be challenging to meet and Castelan has a commitment to continuous improvement that touches every part of our business,’ he explains. Its plans have been proven to benefit retailers’ customers over many years but that does not mean the company rests on its laurels. ‘We ensure that the products and coverage that we offer continue to be
the best in the market, with secure underwriting and managed performance. This is the reason we have been able to offer exceptional performance over so many years. ‘Our colleagues who take the initial call from a customer have huge experience and are part of a team that has been delivering an exceptional customer journey for many years. The depth and breadth of knowledge within the team means that the 2,500 or so warranty calls that are taken each week are handled expertly and with the efficiency that our clients and customers have come to expect,’ he says. Its field based Furniture Care Network technicians are the face of its service and are sent out, on average, within five working days. Again, they call on many years of experience to deliver repairs and resolutions to the customer’s satisfaction, resulting in a resolution rate in excess of 95%. ‘We work closely with all our clients to build and deliver products that meet the end consumer’s needs, while offering value and the service delivery to satisfy these needs,’ adds Gretton. Retailsystem. com Best Software Supplier
Retailsystem.com designs software systems that suit customers’ needs
102
Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘I knew we were doing good business and I knew that our clients were very happy with the work we had been doing for them, because we made absolutely sure we were, but I must confess to being stunned when I was told that Retailsystem.com had won the Best Software Supplier award for a ninth year running,’ says Stephen Smith, Retailsystem.com md. ‘There’s no room for complacency in any business and when your clients are depending on you to help them keep their business healthy and blossoming – market forces permitting – then it’s essential that you keep up to the mark by working on every opportunity to give them the edge,’ he says. ‘You have to look at the world through your customers’ eyes so that you can anticipate their needs and develop the software to answer those needs. That’s why we also continue to have the edge. We’re in business to provide low cost, high value software solutions to organisations of all sorts and sizes in the retail furniture industry, and that means having a clear understanding of the overall nature of running any business as well as keeping up with the specific patterns and trends in this marketplace.’ Smith says its utility-ware, top quality software solutions are on tap like gas or electricity and are continually enhanced to give its customers peace of mind when it comes to running their business. This means customers can concentrate on what they do best to win orders, such as creativity, design, manufacture and pricing – and keeping their customers
happy, which is what really matters. ‘To gain competitive advantage, you either offer something the same only cheaper, or something better at the same price. With Retailsystem.com backing you up with key, up to the minute information on every single aspect of your business, gaining that competitive advantage and being a winner in the marketplace becomes ever closer to your grasp,’ says Smith. ‘That’s why our customers not only appreciate what we can do for them but also feel confident that we can design and implement software solutions according to their requirements, by making general suggestions or detailed requests,’ he says. The company listens to its customers, to business leaders and experts on the industry to pinpoint improvements it can make. If there’s a general problem area, such as the efficient scheduling of ordering, delivery, transportation and planning, then it works to come up with an answer. ‘We continue to use the massive and failsafe facility that is the Cloud so that we can provide our clients with immense computing and data storage power that they can access very simply using a simple PC, a laptop, an iPad or even a smartphone. We provide the IT thinking, designing, devising, upgrading, updating and improving so that our clients don’t have to. And that’s why, again, we have the honour of winning the Best Software Supplier award. Thank you for voting for Retailsystem.com,’ adds Smith. Visit: www.retailsystem.com

Julian Bowen Best Furniture Wholesaler

106
Interiors Monthly August 2017
Julian Bowen has been voted the UK’s Best Furniture Wholesaler for a sixth consecutive year. ‘In a year of unusual volatility and change in the marketplace, we have continued to stick unerringly to our mission of delivering the best possible experience for our customers and believe that we are constantly improving our proposition across all aspects of the business. We are very proud that our customers continue to show such confidence in Julian Bowen and are incredibly grateful for their continued support. Great credit must go to all our staff in the UK, Asia and Latin America, for their hard work and commitment to constantly raising the bar in terms of the service that we provide and quality of product that we deliver,’ says Emmett Lenaghan, Julian Bowen md. After a period of strong growth and record turnover in 2016, Julian Bowen has continued to invest in the business throughout 2017. An important strategic initiative has been further strengthening of the supply chain team, which includes its own team of quality control representatives around the world, and a skilled UK quality control team which has been enhanced with a highly experienced furniture technologist. January 2017 saw an extensive product launch across all categories, which is helping to drive further growth.
‘Among the many highlights are two new bedroom ranges: the New England inspired Maine range in an on-trend immaculate Dove grey lacquer, and the beautifully crafted retro Alicia, which have both proved instant hits in the marketplace, while we have built on our acknowledged expertise in children’s furniture with the innovative Cookie cabin bed and Pluto mid-sleeper, both of which offer a real sense of style combined with great functionality,’ says Lenaghan. ‘The new mirror collection has been an inspired introduction with a great variety of styles offering wall, dressing table and lean-to dress options. We have seen fantastic sales on the new mirror collection and this is not difficult to see when you look at the prices. Such incredible value for money,’ he adds. The company refuses to rest on its laurels and has a strong pipeline of inspiring products for launch over the next 12 months, while at the same time remaining committed to the simple principles that have driven the business from inception over 30 years ago. ‘Our customers deserve the best, and we will work tirelessly to improve every year, offering better quality, value and service and doing our very best to exceed their rightly high level of expectations,’ says Lenaghan. Moduleo Best Website (Flooring)
The website allows users to see what their new floor could look like and features commercial case studies
Following the success of its popular Moduleo Moods room visualiser, the LVT flooring manufacturer has rolled out the feature on its moduleo.co.uk website across its entire product range. The online platform allows customers to get a better idea of what their new floor will look like, before committing to a purchase, and can be used to view flooring solutions from the Impress, Transform and Select collections. ‘We’re increasingly seeing high demand for flooring solutions that complement not only the project setting, but the individual tastes of the customer. Being able to preview what a floor will look like before it’s in situ meets this demand as it can help ensure the pattern and shades chosen will have the desired finish,’ says David Bigland, Moduleo UK and Eire md. The room visualiser also allows users to select different shades and patterns from the collections in a number of typical
domestic and commercial settings. Inspired by Moduleo Moods that offers customers a creative studio in which they can combine 10 new formats, the online platform has experienced month on month success and is heralded for its ability to bring about new design concepts and inspiration to otherwise routine refurbishments. As well as being able to access the popular visualiser feature, Moduleo also hosts its catalogue of commercial case studies on the website, including the recent refurbishment of the former Hartwood Hall, in Chorley, Lancashire. A striking and unique floor from Moduleo Moods was created using thousands of individual shapes, including hexagons, herringbone, and triangles. The venue has been extensively refurbished into a Greene King restaurant concept, a modern restaurant and bar with several zones to differentiate the various spaces. Visit: www.moduleo.co.uk

Interiors Monthly August 2017
The winner of the Best Furniture Exhibition award, the January Furniture Show, is the premier UK furniture and interiors trade event. With the UK furniture market valued at £10.6bn (according to the BFM) it is a vital industry to the UK economy. Covering all aspects of furniture and interiors, including fabrics, flooring and lighting, the show has grown in importance and influence in the UK furniture trade since its first outing in 2015. The 2017 show featured more than 500 UK and international exhibitors and had over 20,000 visitors. Buyers from retail furniture chains, department and major independent stores, contract and leisure buyers as well as interior designers and internal specifiers, attended. There was stiff competition for the award this year, so winning was really appreciated. ‘The whole team is delighted to receive this award. We provide a platform for manufacturers and suppliers to meet new and existing customers, and to show and sell their products. Our aim is to do that in the most friendly and efficient way possible, and in an easy to access

We are already planning to make sure that the 2018 show is just as good if not better than this year with the same great exhibitors, plus plenty of new ones, extended feature areas and a friendly environment.’ In 2018 the January Furniture Show will again take place at the NEC, Birmingham, in Halls 1 to 5 from 21-24 January. With a re-booking rate of over 90% from this year’s show, 2018 promises to deliver new collections and models from the best manufacturers and suppliers in the furniture industry. Exhibiting will be major brands and household names including Parker Knoll, Ercol, Duresta, G Plan Upholstery, Skovby, Ego Italiano, Gallery Direct, Hestia, Mlily, and Dar Lighting. EDITOR’S CHOICE
Crown Floors, Deacon Jones by Crown Floors Innovation in Flooring
From left: Danny Deacon and Vinnie Jones; Manhattan; Metropolis
116
Interiors Monthly August 2017
‘The entire team behind the Deacon Jones by Crown Floors collection is delighted to be awarded Editor’s Choice Innovation in Flooring. Any launch is a risk, but with a Hollywood celebrity behind us, we knew we were on to a winner. Anyone who’s seen Vinnie Jones on the pitch or on a cinema screen will know that his larger than life character is perfect for making a big impact. As Deacon Jones by Crown Floors has proven, nowhere more so than on shopfloors around the country,’ says Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta Group marketing director. ‘We used Vinnie’s character as the inspiration for the collection, chronicling his legendary tough man image with four extra-strong Easy Clean PP ranges and giving a glimpse of his softer side with four supersoft carpets in a mix of Satino polyamide and Easy Clean fibres. With styles and colours handpicked by Vinnie along with his friend and flooring aficionado, Danny Deacon, the collection gives a wide choice, catering for every home.’ Using celebrities for product launches is long established, but in recent years has not been used in interiors. It was a risk that could have backfired and made the brand look outdated and, worse, out of touch. However, with skilful marketing
and public relations behind it, the launch proved celebrity does work. ‘With dramatic POS, which we’ve used to build recognition within stores, Vinnie makes a near life-size appearance on each side of the display, smartly dressed in blue to mark his soft side and in an arresting red for his tough side. A clear distinction between the two helps to make the consumer’s purchasing journey easier, while retaining the powerful image that made it attractive in the first instance,’ Vanden Bossche says. ‘With Vinnie, an instantly recognisable face among homeowners from all demographics, the Deacon Jones by Crown Floors collection has a wide market appeal, a critical factor in the development of the brand and the foundation of its success in-store. With flooring stores saturated with various “me too” brands, Deacon Jones by Crown Floors is a great way to differentiate, without restricting appeal. ‘Everyone, including Vinnie and Danny, is delighted to be recognised for the efforts we’ve put in to making Deacon Jones by Crown Floors one of the first celebrity-endorsed ranges in the carpet industry. As a team, we are sure to go on to premiership levels of success,’ adds Vanden Bossche. Visit: www.crownfloors.co.uk

Victoria Outstanding Performance (Flooring)
Victoria encourages operational independence of the companies it has acquired
118
Interiors Monthly August 2017
Since the arrival of Geoff Wilding as executive chairman in 2012, Victoria has embarked on a growth strategy led by acquisitions and supported by continuing organic growth. The company has been hugely successful, providing a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs to realise the value they have created, while retaining their independence and continuing to develop their flooring businesses within a larger group. This new approach has, in four years, built Victoria into one of the largest operators in the flooring industry. Wilding has been clear in his ‘handsoff’ philosophy to the management teams of the companies that have been acquired, which include Westex, Abingdon and Interfloor. Victoria’s approach is to encourage operational independence of the brands and give the management teams ongoing autonomy to develop their businesses as they see fit. This has ensured that all the entrepreneurial spirit of owner operators of the flooring manufacturers acquired by Victoria can continue to grow their operations and maintain their unique culture. The result has been enormous growth
in revenues and profits. The past year was particularly pivotal, with expansion into continental Europe in addition to moving into two new complementary product offerings in fast growing markets – flooring underlay and artificial grass. As a result, the group’s revenue increased 80% to £128m in 2015, a further 90% to £255m in 2016 and market forecasts of well over £300m in 2017. ‘Every brand and business within Victoria has continued to grow and the management teams keep a great deal of control over their businesses,’ says Steve Byrne, who sold Whitestone Group to Victoria in 2014. ‘There are numerous examples of private equity or large corporates destroying entrepreneurial businesses which is why I sold my business to Victoria and I’m enjoying it even more than I expected. It is fabulous being part of a group with such an individual approach in the industry.’ His enthusiasm, which is typical of the entrepreneurs who have sold to Victoria, goes a long way to explaining the recent success of the group. Interiors Monthly August 2017
Brintons has been at the heart of the carpet industry for more than 230 years and its high end woven carpets have become the standard for impressive residential and commercial interiors throughout the world. ‘We believe that carpet is a foundation for creativity and a way to bring your space to life. After another busy year we are delighted to be recognised by Interiors Monthly as the Flooring Brand of the year for the third year in a row,’ says Natalie Littlehales, Brintons consumer marketing manager. Brintons has already triumphed this year at the International Wool Carpet and Rugs Awards in March by winning three awards: Creative Marketing Initiative for its Fleece to Floor campaign; Woven Carpet Design Installation of the Year for Queen Mary II; and Design Collaboration of the Year for the Altered Gravity collection with Stacy Garcia. It also introduced New Neutrals, soft muted shades that complement the current trend for elegant and refined spaces. Adding to the popular Bell Twist collection, Brintons created more colours to be a soothing and calming influence in the home, providing the perfect backdrop for creative interiors. The full Bell Twist colour palette has over 60 colours, drawing inspiration from
the world around us and being regularly updated to reflect changing styles. Bell Twist has been in production for more than 50 years. Its textured surface makes it exceptionally hardwearing, hence its popularity. Brintons also offers a selection of stocked Axminster collections including tartans, stripes, striking geometrics and timeless florals. From antique styles to sleek contemporary designs there will be something to suit your customers’ needs. Brintons’ QuickWeave series has also gone from strength to strength this year, now with three colour palettes and hundreds of design and colour options. Specifically created for installers and hospitality clients who work on assignments with tight deadlines, the collection is a made-to-order woven Axminster carpet range offering a turnaround time of just six weeks. Brintons’ team created a variety of designs to reflect today’s trends with contemporary patterns complementing transitional styles such as plaids, stripes, geometric, abstract and layered design themes. Suitable for contract and heavy domestic installations this series provides a wealth of opportunities to service customers and projects that need a more personalised solution. Alongside its Flare range in colours including yellow, coral, raspberry and teal, Adam Carpets will show trend forecasts for SS18 and its collaboration with Little Greene will be expanded to include a guide designed to inspire retailers and customers to think about room colours in a more comprehensive and connected way. ‘As fellow British manufacturers, we understand Adam Carpets’ heritage and share a similar pedigree, so it was very satisfying to see how beautifully our products can be combined to further enhance one another,’ says David Mottershead, Little Greene md. The Galloway loop is Brockway’s chunkiest yet, and is available in three styles and six colourways. It uses 100% undyed wool in a four-ply yarn and comes in 4m and 5m widths. It will be joined by Portofino, a combination of high/low loop with stripes in a collection of eight colours in a three-ply 100% wool blend. Twist pile Lingdale (40oz) and Lingdale Elite (50oz) come in an 80%/20% wool and polypropylene mix. They have a dozen heather shades in 4m and 5m widths. Crown Floors will debut an ultra-soft stain-resistant collection in two styles alongside the Deacon Jones by Crown Floors collection. The new www.crownfloors.co.uk website will also be demonstrated, so retailers not yet registered can see the benefits of signing up, including a dedicated store listing and a dealer area to keep up to date with news and access the latest downloads. The website also allows consumers to order up to three free samples and to find their nearest stockist. Cormar Carpets showcases the latest additions to its portfolio, as well as unveiling two collections for the autumn. This year saw Cormar introduce the Highland Saxony heather carpet range. Made from 100% soft Excellon polypropylene in a twofold yarn, Highland Saxony offers a 10-year guarantee ‚‚‚

Two of Cormar’s most popular easy-clean ranges – Primo Ultra and Sensation – have undergone revamps, with a host of new colours, and will be on display. It will also introduce a range of premium rugs alongside demonstrations of the new consumer-focused website, while retailers can pick up the AW 2017 brochure. Interfloor promotes its Premium High Density underlays: PHD Chromium 9mm has high Textron backing to give it more dimensional stability and cleaner cutting during installation, while PHD Titanium 8mm and PHD Palladium 10mm have a polyethylene with reinforcing scrim backing. There will also be additions to its Gripperrods offer. Lano will launch Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe, which blend the stain resistance and low maintenance of polypropylene but boast the look and feel of the most luxurious nylon velvet styles. Among other launches is Fairfield Heaven, a 65oz Saxony style that will sit within a Touchdown Premium portfolio ‚‚‚

one Karndean Designflooring will introduce its updated Art Select Woods collection, featuring the same design in three formats Karndean Designflooring is set to unveil four wood designs to accommodate the growing trend for ‘room to room’ floor designs as part of its updated Art Select Woods collection. Tapping into the constantly evolving trend of adding grey in the home, the multi-tonal grey hues of Storm Oak will be added to its premium Art Select collection in a matching full length plank (1,219mm x 178mm), parquet (228mm x 76mm) and basket weave (305mm x 76mm and 114mm x 114mm) formats. With an existing Spring Oak full length plank and parquet design, the collection will also welcome a new Spring Oak basket weave design. ‘These new designs are ideal for homeowners looking to achieve the same colour floor room to room with an alternative format or as a standalone rug effect to break up individual spaces. With traditional dark and rich brown tones available as part of our Art Select Oak Royale collection, our new cool grey tone will be extremely popular with homeowners looking for a more contemporary feel,’ says Scott Cochrane, Karndean Designflooring UK retail sales director. ‘Having the same design in three different formats will allow our independent retail network to impress homeowners with a new option for
achieving a consistent feel throughout the home. We’re expecting room to room floor designs to become an even more popular trend. ‘Likewise, we know traditional basket weave effects are back in style and homeowners are often looking to pair them with parquet or full length designs. Our newest basket weave designs are perfect for a statement hallway or highlighting key areas such as a dining space,’ he says. Visitors to the stand will also get the opportunity to see Karndean’s Korlok rigid core collection with 12 new authentic wood designs (1,420mm x 225mm) inspired by European and North American woods. Korlok can be installed over most
existing hard surface floors or uneven subfloors without the worry of exposing any imperfections, thanks to its K-Core technology. It features a 5G vertical click locking mechanism and pre-attached acoustic foam backing for quick and easy installation. It can also reduce noise transfer to rooms below by up to 19dB, without the need for separate underlay. ‘The Flooring Show is the most prominent platform for us to unveil our new Art Select Woods update and Korlok collection. Our customers can expect to see new designs, POS and live demonstrations, as well as having the opportunity to meet with our team of dedicated retail business managers,’ adds Cochrane. Shaping the seasons A dozen key statements from Habitat’s AW17 collection. Visit: www.habitat.co.uk
Mortimer ‘Designed to suggest the idea of an urban skyline, the Mortimer’s offset angles highlight the 3D cubes that inter-connect to build up its strong architectural silhouette. Finished in oak, these blocks are raised on statement red pin legs to allow light to filter around the main body,’ says Matthew Long, Habitat designer. Mortimer sideboard £895; Ramsden orange bottle vase £45; Ramsden tall green bottle vase £50; Patch rug £450; Darjeeling hand-beaten pendant £175
Tabletop noir ‘Celebrating glaze and texture, specifically around the colour black, we’ve created bold shapes with strong silhouettes for the table that are the antithesis to the traditional white dinner service. The resulting feel is sophisticated and handcrafted, with designs made to be mixed with colour, or equally create a strong monochrome scheme. Here the Portuguese stoneware tableware collection Noir, and serveware collection Greta, are both finished in a reactive glaze and sit alongside the heavy metal finish of Merak which is made in India,’ says Polly Dickens, Habitat creative director. From left: Hobart black glaze vase £30; Greta ceramic cake stand £25; Merak small metal jug £12; Greta tall ceramic jug £25; Noir side plate £8; Noir mug £8; Noir pasta bowl £10; Turini gold cutlery £95 (16 piece); Noir cereal bowl £8; Noir dinner plate £10; Caxton candlesticks £25 each

Playful mark-making ‘I love the spontaneity of this idea. I worked on a small series of patterns that we then outsourced to various ceramics suppliers. They each translated these patterns in different ways using different glazes and techniques – our favourites of which we have curated here,’ says Martha Coates, Habitat surface and pattern designer.

‘A wingback armchair has noticeably been missing from our collection and we felt that Smithfield, with its beautiful curvaceous design would be a show stopping first introduction. Aaron Probyn’s design brings a modern gentlemen’s club feel finished in either leather or wool,’ says Dickens. Omara marble side table £150; Newstead candle holder £25; Smithfield wingback leather armchair £1,995; Patsy black circular mirror £195; Naimo black rug £400 ‚‚‚

RETAIL Tilda coffee table £295; Niamo glass tumbler £25 (set of four); Naimo black rug £400; Talbot velvet sofa £1,200; Shadow floor lamp £175
Shadow
‘A dramatic conceptual piece, Shadow’s thin strips of LED cast vivid slices of light against wall and floor. A hollow frame creates an element of the unexpected and visual intrigue, structural framework becoming secondary to washes of light and unusual lighting effects,’ says Dickens.
Lucia king size black metal bed frame £425; Khadi stripe grey and black cushion £40; Ikat black and white striped cushion £40; Ikat black and white squares 60 x 60cm cushion £40; Hikaru ikat cushion £55; Khadi white cushion with crocodile edge £25; Khadi grey striped throw £90; Ikat striped bedspread £250; Hikaru ikat cushion (on floor) £55; Dalston rug £350
Architectural shapes ‘We have looked this season at three-dimensional shapes that suggest the idea of buildings. These are angular, geometric and monumental. This design idea has translated into a strong textile story using the idea of optical illusion. Cubo is our first shaped rug which is the beginning of another growing trend you’ll see expanding in our textiles,’ says Coates.
Patch rug £450; Cubo cut-out rug £400; Gees embroidered cushion £50; Mattoni embroidered orange cushion £55; Duplo green printed cushion £15; Kaleido multicoloured flatweave rug £400; Bonham sofa £1,500 ‚‚‚

Home office
‘As the option of working from home becomes more prevalent, we’re having to adapt home office design to suit a variety of spaces. As technology is allowing devices to get smaller and paper free, office furniture can be more streamlined, stylised and adaptable for modern living with people working in the hub of their space, rather than a dedicated office,’ says Dickens.
Khadi and Ikat textiles
‘Khadi is India’s most traditional fabric: hand-spun and handwoven, it is a rural based craft on the decline. For AW17, we’re championing this wonderful fabric, with its loosely woven texture, where you can see that a person has hand-made each design. Alongside we are also exploring a modern take on the traditional Indian Ikat method. We decided on a black and neutral colourway for these stories which shows off the texture and weave of these techniques to their greatest advantage,’ says Coates.

RETAIL Bonham ‘A Habitat take on the classic ruche sofa, we’ve slimlined this design with a curved arm detail and thin frame to give it a more accessible footprint for smaller spaces. Its quilted, tailored finish gives a sophisticated feel but still with a streak of fun in bright, bold colourways,’ says Dickens.

Decorative Glassware ‘We started working with a new decorative glassware supplier two seasons ago and have seen real success with this look. This season we’ve played with unusual, abstract shapes, almost melting in style, and enlivened with a strong 1970s colour palette,’ says Dickens. From left: Purcell blue glass vase £35; Sunbeam red stripe glass vase £35; Amity black stripe glass vase £40; Dwyer melted red and black stripe glass vase £35; Purcell orange glass vase £35; Fizzy bronze glass vase £30; Noosa turquoise, brown and white striped glass vase £35
Pendants ‘We’ve really expanded this product area with a mix of ideas from the easy-to-fix Harvey collection, to the hand-crafted Darjeeling metal shade, each individually hand-beaten in India by traditional craftsmen. We’ve finished this with a bright orange inner to make this a real statement,’ says Long. From left: Rae copper easy-fit pendant shade £55; Achille walnut easy-fit shade £75; Harvey easy-fit pendant in black and copper £90; Harvey easy-fit pendant in saffron and grey £90; Darjeeling hand-beaten pendant £175; Kopollo chrome pendant £120
Rugs ‘We are introducing around 30 rugs this season with new materials, techniques and designs. We’ve looked at ideas such as recycled yarns and reinterpretations of the traditional Indian wool dhurrie – first introduced by Habitat to the UK in the 1960s – with a range of bold, contemporary patterns,’ says Coates. Clockwise from top right: Telha blue and white tiled handtufted rug £350; Orissa yellow flatweave rug £170; Galloway grey cuboid flatweave rug £400; Quadra blue and pink cuboid flatweave rug £300; Brickie flatweave rug £170; Tiles black and white tiled flatweave rug £150; Kaleido multicoloured flatweave rug £400
