EDITOR’S COMMENT
A sorry tale for shareholders Things keep getting worse for longsuffering Carpetright investors. Will there be any good news for them? Long-term shareholders of Carpetright are likely to be considering tearing up their share certificates – if they haven’t already sold up. Five weeks after warning that profits would be no higher than the bottom end of analysts’ forecasts, at £13.8m, Carpetright stunned investors by saying a poor post-Christmas period would mean it could only make £2m for the year. Shares immediately plunged 43%. In the past year they have fallen from 206p to 85.5p at the time of writing. Go back to 1 July 2014 when Wilf Walsh was on his first day as chief executive and the share price was £524.5p. In under four years it has lost more than 84% of its value. While the new store format is certainly better than the old one, has the chain done enough to tell shoppers that it has a much nicer shopping experience to offer? As the share price has fallen so much there has been talk of a potential bid, but given the forecast profits are so low, it doesn’t seem likely any time soon. Of course, when Walsh came on board he didn’t have Tapi (90 stores and counting) in competition with its policy of grow the business and profits will come. As ever, January was a hectic month, with Heimtextil, Domotex, imm cologne and the January Furniture Show. Exhibitors at all the shows were keen to point out that they had not held back on developing new products (while the UK exhibitors were also keen to gossip about other shows, but that’s a story for another time). Praise has to go to Simona Novelli for making such a fantastic success of the British stand at Domotex. Her efforts did not go unnoticed and hopefully there will be an even larger presence in 2019. The winner of the Interiors Monthly subscription draw at the January Furniture Show was Denise McLernon, Sound Asleep Beds, Newtownards, County Down. Congratulations to her.

Dunelm sales jump by £35m
Post-Christmas footfall was significantly down
Value plummets after Carpetright profit warning Carpetright’s stock market value plunged following a second profits warning in five weeks after poor postChristmas performance. Its share price fell by 43.3% to 93.2p a share, giving it a market capitalisation of £63.3m. Shares have since fallen to 88.5p. The fall came as the chain warned it would make between £2m and £6m in the year to 28 April. On 12 December Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo, had warned profits would be at the lower end of analysts’ forecasts for £13.8m to £16.5m. Shoppers stayed away with ‘transaction numbers down significantly year-on-year’ postChristmas. Despite increasing average order values, like for like flooring sales have dropped 7.1% since Christmas. In the 11-week period like for like sales were down 3.6%, with flooring sales down 1.4% and ‘a further material decrease in bed sales.’ ‘Despite a positive start to our third quarter, we have seen a significant
4
Interiors Monthly February 2018
deterioration in UK trading during the important post-Christmas trading period. While average transaction values were up year on year, the number of customer transactions since Christmas was sharply down, which we believe is indicative of reduced consumer confidence,’ said Walsh. ‘The severity of the decline in footfall over this key trading period and our more cautious view of the outlook for the balance of the year leads to a significant reduction in our full year expectations,’ he said. ‘Against this background of a further deterioration in market conditions, we remain committed to driving through the improvements that are essential to the long term repositioning of the business,’ added Walsh. Sales in the Rest of Europe business were also volatile but continue to deliver like for like sales growth, primarily reflecting the introduction of lower margin service income.
Dunelm delivered a £35m sales boost in the past quarter, including in-store like for like growth. Like for like store sales rose by 1.1% to £228.8m in the quarter to 30 December. Online sales from Dunelm.com jumped by 30.5% to £6.1m. New stores contributed £14.8m and Worldstores.co.uk, Kiddicare.com and Achica.com £12.4m. This all combined to provide a 13.6% increase of £35.7m to £297.5. ‘After a good first quarter, it is pleasing to see our sales momentum maintained with total sales growth, and like for like sales growth. This performance is driving our continued market share gains,’ said Andy Harrison, Dunelm chairman. ‘We are now up to 169 superstores having successfully opened five in the quarter. We are well on the way to becoming a genuine multi-channel retailer,’ he added.
Poster campaign: The Furniture Makers’ Company is appealing to the industry to support its 2018 welfare campaign by displaying its new poster to help spread the word that the charity can support industry workers past and present if they have fallen on hard times. The furnishing industry’s charity provides financial assistance to workers within the industry through grants that can go towards essential household items or bills, funeral expenses, property repairs, disabled and medical equipment, respite or convalescent breaks, general financial hardship or pre-tenancy costs and removal costs.

Mixed bag for ScS winter trade ScS’s trading update has given an insight into pre and post Christmas trading, with mixed results. The group said like for like orders increased by 2.2% in the six months to 27 January. Orders at ScS stores rose by 2.5% but fell by 0.4% at its 27 House of Fraser concessions, which make up 7.4% of sales. The performance compares with a 2.9% increase in the first 16 weeks (to 18 November), when ScS stores saw a 3.6% order increase and the House of Fraser concessions, which then made up 6.4% of sales, saw orders drop 6.4%. ‘The group has traded in line with the board’s expectations in the first half of the financial year, including the key winter sales period. We believe the group’s increasing resilience and value proposition will enable us to manage the continued economic uncertainty and take advantage of opportunities,’ said ScS. The company said its £12m banking facilities have been extended until November 2021.
DFS buys Multiyork name DFS has bought the brand name and designs of failed upholstery chain Multiyork. The group has paid £1.2m to administrators and is also buying Multiyork’s marketing databases. It has bought the leases to eight branches: Beverley, Cheltenham, Epping, Guildford, Nottingham, St Albans, Winchester and Thurrock. Six will become Sofa Workshop branches and two DFS stores. The 35 staff at the stores will be offered the opportunity to join DFS. ‘We are pleased by this positive outcome, which offers a clear opportunity to accelerate our growth plans for Sofa Workshop, as it continues to go from strength to strength,’ said Ian Filby, DFS chief executive. The remaining Multiyork stores can use the name until 18 February.
Extra bed show The South West Furniture Manufacturers’ Agent and Representatives Federation is to launch a bed show from 17-18 April at the Sedgemoor Auction Centre, Bridgwater, Somerset. ‘SWFMARF members have decided that with the Bed Show commitment for many bed manufacturers and it overlapping our annual show, it would be beneficial to host an exhibition in early spring, when the calendar is a little quieter for the buyers,’ said Maud Laine, SWFMARF secretary.

Tune in to La-Z-Boy: La-Z-Boy UK launched an 11-day TV advertising campaign on 1 February. The campaign, entitled Connoisseurs of Comfort, features a selection of characters who each highlight different qualities of the La-Z-Boy Originals collection. ‘We will be the only upholstery brand in the UK to be investing in standalone TV adverts and we’ve deliberately selected mainstream channels to focus on the demographics identified in our extensive consumer research,’ said Mark Draper, La-Z-Boy UK marketing director.
Headlam predicts a profit increase Flooring distributor Headlam says it expects profits to be 6% higher for 2017. The group forecasts underlying profits to be ‘comfortably in-line with consensus market expectations’ of £42.5m. Last month the group said trading in the first four months of the second half had been ‘characterised by weaker markets. However, the trading performance improved in November and December 2017 relative to the first four months of the second half.’ This saw sales rise by 2.1% (1.2% in constant currency). UK like for like sales increased by 0.5% and European sales by 4.2%. ‘The company’s concerted focus on margin enhancement and efficiencies throughout 2017 more than offset the slightly lower than originally anticipated revenue growth,’ it said. Meanwhile, Headlam non-executive chairman Dick Peters is to step down on 31 May. He has been on the board for 12 years. Non-executive director Philip Lawrence will succeed him. Former KPMG partner Amanda Aldridge has joined the board.

Flatpack pioneer Kamprad dies Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of Ikea, died on 27 January after a short illness. He was 91. He passed away at his home in Småland, Sweden surrounded by his loved ones. Ikea described him as ‘one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the 20th century. Ikea became his lifelong commitment. His driving force was the vision of creating a better everyday life for many people.’ ‘We are deeply saddened by Ingvar’s passing. We will remember his dedication and commitment to always side with the many people. To never give up, always try to become better and lead by example,’ said Torbjörn Lööf, Inter Ikea Group ceo and president. ‘Ingvar was a great entrepreneur of the typical southern Swedish kind – hardworking and stubborn, with a lot of warmth and a playful twinkle in his eye. He worked until the very end of his life, staying true to his own motto that most things remain to be done. ‘Since 1988 Ingvar did not have an operational role within Ikea but he continued to contribute to the business in the role of senior adviser, sharing his knowledge and energy with the Ikea co-workers,’ he said. ‘We are mourning the loss of our founder and dear friend Ingvar. His legacy will be admired for many years to come and his vision – to create a better everyday life for the many people – will continue to guide and inspire us,’ said Jesper Brodin, Ikea Group ceo and president. ‘Ingvar’s extensive knowledge and engagement over the years have been a huge source of inspiration. His heritage is always with us and we will continue to constantly search for new and better ways – to find solutions that no one else has thought of and to do great things for the many people, together,’ said Lars Thorsén, Ikano Group ceo. ‘Ingvar will be missed and fondly remembered by his family and by Ikea and Ikano co-workers all over the world,’ he added.

It’s good to talk Product care must be discussed before a sale It had been a long day. Tina hung her coat on the second hook inside the front door, placed her keys on the hall table and walked through to the kitchen. She filled the kettle and, as it boiled, lined up the teapot and her mug, added tea leaves and milk, and took out the things she needed from the freezer for her evening meal. The microwave buzzed as she sat down with her tea. Nine minutes and 20 seconds before it would ping her back into action. This was her moment to relax. But she had an important job to do first. Tina went to the airing cupboard and took out the seat covers of her sofa. She held them against her cheek. They were dry. She breathed in and savoured the smell of fabric conditioner as she felt the softness of the covers. She noticed that the piping was wearing thin, and in places she could see the cord where threads had worn away. It wasn’t a new sofa anymore, but she hadn’t expected this after only nine months of use. She wrestled with the fillings as she
Zips don’t imply a cover is washable
20
Interiors Monthly February 2018
tried to replace the covers. She’d done this three times already, but it didn’t get any easier. Then disaster struck. Just below the piping on the front of a cover the fabric split. The sofa had looked perfect in the showroom. It was exactly what she wanted, she had thought, and she had told the salesperson. There was no discussion about options that she might have preferred, such as different cushion fillings, nor about everyday care and maintenance. When it arrived she had to work it out for herself. Every time the sofa was used it had a lived-in look. Tina resented the time it took to plump the cushions almost as much as she despised the untidy appearance if she didn’t do it. The seat and back covers had zips, so she removed them every couple of months for cleaning to stop them looking grubby. There were no cleaning instructions and she took this to mean you could clean it like a pillowcase or any other item of linen. The ping of the microwave signalled
time for her to start preparing dinner. Complaining about her sofa would have to wait until the morning: the retailer would not be open now. ‘If only I had known this was going to happen,’ she said to herself as she worked, ‘I would not have bought the thing’. In a home not far away a salesperson, known to Tina, had also arrived home and was reflecting on the day’s events: the customer who’d mopped their laminate flooring and now the joints were swelling; the one who’d used their kitchen worktop as a chopping board and it had scratched; the dining table with placemat shadows due to the sun. Where was their common sense? If only he’d known, he could have told them so that these things wouldn’t have happened. If only he knew what was coming tomorrow. RUGS
Soul catchers
ER N IN W
Winners of the Carpet Design Awards Domotex’s 13th Carpet Design Awards saw the 265 rug designs entered reduced to 24 finalists across the eight categories. ‘Rugs that move me are difficult to describe with words. While I have a deep appreciation for individual formal elements like material, weave, pattern, colour, and texture, I am most captivated by a rug when those elements come together in such a way that something greater than the sum of its parts is expressed. I often refer to this as “the soul of a rug”. It’s not a technical thing, but much more about how the rug communicates on an experiential level,’ said Michael Mandapati, chairman of the judging jury and founder and president of New York retailer Warp & Weft. The rugs were judged on the basis of design concept and design properties such as colour, materials, structure and quality, as well as product sustainability and branding. Visit: www.domotex.de

BEDS AND BEDROOM
Sleep resolution Good quality sleep is essential to our wellbeing By February the challenge of keeping those well intentioned new year resolutions starts to wane. However, it could simply be a matter of getting enough good quality sleep every night to help keep on the straight and narrow. Many people still do not realise that the quality of sleep has a direct impact on daily wellbeing, from physical health, mental sharpness and energy, to emotional balance and weight. That’s why it is vital to sleep on a mattress that is perfectly suited for your body. Those who don’t replace their mattress as often as needed run the risk of sleeping in an unhygienic environment, putting their quality of sleep and more importantly, their health, at risk. Sleep activates the body’s healing process, rehydrates spinal discs, strengthens the immune system and allows the brain to do vital maintenance. Sleeping on a mattress that is past its prime can often mean the body is not getting the support it needs, resulting in a night of tossing and turning. Selecting a mattress with zonal support will ensure it keeps its shape and minimise stress on pressure points. ‘We all spend around eight hours a night using our mattress, so it’s important to select one that isn’t a potential threat to our health. There’s nothing better than getting into bed after a long, hard day, which means it’s essential that we all get the best out of our mattress and achieve a great quality, healthy sleep,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy sales and marketing director. All Sealy mattresses feature a variety of sleep technologies to ensure cool, fresh and dry conditions. Smart Fibres such as Purotex reduce allergens by releasing friendly bacteria microcapsules into the fabrics of the mattress to reduce mould and moisture. Tencel fibres also help to create a cool and dry environment by absorbing moisture. Tencel’s inherent natural properties do not give bacteria a chance to grow, and being 100% organic without the use of chemicals, it is claimed to be irritation free. Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

BEDS AND BEDROOM Royal Sovereign Plus has a cooling mattress cover
Cool cover Dunlopillo has introduced a cooling mattress cover Managing body temperature is an important component of quality sleep. Doing more than simply keeping comfortable while sleeping, body temperature helps regulate the circadian rhythm that determines when the body is ready to go to sleep and when it’s ready to wake up. Sleep research suggests cooler body temperature is associated with sleep onset and deeper sleep, while an elevated body temperature is connected with alertness, reducing the ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. ‘In order to fall asleep more quickly and get a more restful night’s sleep, you’ve got to send your body the right signals by keeping it cool when you get

into bed – as well as throughout the night,’ says David Wescomb, Dunlopillo brand director. Sleeping on materials that trap too much heat will push body temperature into the discomfort zone, which is why Dunlopillo has added a Plus range to its Royal Sovereign Collection featuring a cooling mattress cover. The cooling fabric is made using a specially developed yarn with a high molecular weight, which gives the Plus cover a high value of thermal absorption and highly conductive features. ‘This provides the user with an instant sense of coolness, as well as efficiently conducting heat away from the body throughout the night to keep body
temperature approximately one degree centigrade lower. By helping the body to stay cool and maintain an extra comfortable thermal sleep environment, Dunlopillo Plus will make it easier for you to fall into a deeper, more restorative sleep to maximise sleep quality,’ he says. ‘Dunlopillo Plus of course still embodies all the anti-allergenic, antibacterial and anti-microbial properties which make Dunlopillo latex so unique. The durability of latex surpasses its foam and spring mattress rivals representing an excellent long-term investment and a premium natural sleeping alternative that retailers and consumers alike can depend on,’ adds Wescomb. Buying spree Think Rugs had a major sales increase Think Rugs enjoyed a 50% rise in orders compared with the 2017 show, with most of the increase coming from new customers. It also won the Decor category of The Furniture Awards for its Woodland rug, which was also its bestseller during the show. ‘You truly want to touch and feel this bold, great value centrepiece. Featuring interesting textures and a clever use of colour, it will instantly become a living room talking point – and you can’t put a price on that,’ commented the judges. Other top sellers included 16th Avenue, Brooklyn and Montana. The company also used the event to highlight how much it had developed its machine made rugs, such as Woodland, 16th Avenue, Brooklyn and Prestige. Boho, a design with fringes, is an addition to the Royal Nomadic collection. Montana’s colours have increased from 11 to 14 and there are now six size options rather than five. According to the company, the sales trend is having the right design, colour and quality, with consumers not looking for the lowest price. Visit: www.thinkrugs.co.uk

Hearth and home Buyers warmed to SNE’s fireplace surrounds Nostalgia for fireplaces among people who live in flats and modern homes fuelled interest in SNE’s bespoke fireplaces at the show. The surrounds, made in a variety of styles – and available to order in any colour – come complete with an electric fire that slots into the chosen surround. Each also features a coordinating wall mirror. Stephen Kane, SNE owner, says the product’s USP is its versatility: because it fits flush against a flat wall, it can be easily moved about the home and simply plugged in. Kane says this portability positions the product firmly in the furniture market, and that is where most orders come from: fireplace retailers prefer the more conventional stone and granite varieties to SNE’s products, which are made of painted MDF. ‘There’s nothing quite like it in the
Interiors Monthly February 2018
market. Even the fireplace retailers are saying they have never seen anything like it before. There’s been a fantastic response and we’ve had a lot of big orders,’ he says. The latest model features a Bluetooth speaker that plays the user’s chosen music behind a fire that changes colour. Surrounds and mirror frames are made in Northern Ireland and the fires are sourced from Dimplex. Designed by SNE’s design team the fireplaces aim to reflect general interiors trends. The latest models feature a mirrored crystal effect, while products under development include an industrial style, using iron and reclaimed timber. Retailers can also buy the surrounds on their own: Kane says many orders come from stores that already stock electric fires of the right size and just want surrounds for them. SNE, tel: 0780 307 0145

REVIEW Exhibitors praised the quality of retail visitors
Quality visitors Exhibitors were impressed with the response to their products Matthew Kutas, Chateau d’Ax agent, says the AIS Furniture Show’s Cranmore Park venue is good and there is no need to show at the January Furniture Show at the NEC as well. Even though footfall was less than he would have liked, he says: ‘I’m not sure there would be any benefit in being at the NEC. Most of the people we appeal to or want to deal with are AIS members and here we get their undivided attention in a small space. The visitors here who are not AIS members have been very good quality too.’ New in Chateau d’Ax’s Deluxe collection is the Silhouette modular sofa, available in plain, striped and patterned options. Because the modules are not bracketed together they can be easily rearranged. ‘Some people separate them completely and use them as separate pieces of furniture in different rooms. It’s a very versatile and multifunctional piece,’ says Kutas. At UK Contemporary Furniture, Gary Naylor, business development manager, said the show had seen quality visitors. Generally, he observes: ‘The market is mixed at the moment; the upper ‚‚‚

Sound is streamed via Bluetooth to the speakers so there’s no need for cables. Show newcomer Serene Lighting – a division of long-established Serene Furnishings – was launched four months ago and already has 200 ranges. The current copper trend featured among the items on show. ‘It’s gone well,’ says Rajan Hallan, Serene Lighting director. ‘We came here to let people know that Serene Furnishings also has a lighting division, but we’ve had a good response and have taken orders, which was a bonus.’ At Kindred, wardrobes were reinvented, with customers given the opportunity to customise their hanging and storage space in a variety of configurations. Advancing with technology What the product does is key for himolla customers Constant research and development has enabled continued advances in chair technology at himolla. One key advance has been the ability to adjust the seat angle independently of the recline function, as seen in the new model in the S Lounger range, according to Rob Davies, himolla UK agent. There has been greater focus on more contemporary styling, with slim arms and slim backrests, for example. But Davies adds that the underlying quality remains at the forefront of designers’ minds. ‘A lot of manufacturers put style over substance; they are uber stylish at the expense of comfort. But comfort is always our focus; our motto is form follows function. What furniture does is more important than how we make it look. First we make a comfortable seat and then we tweak how it looks,’ he says. The S Lounger range saw new models. It traditionally appeals to the 60-plus age group, but Davies says people of this age often act younger and like modern design. ‘They often like a more stylish, sleeker product, not big, cumbersome pieces of furniture. Electric chairs don’t just appeal to older people but increasingly to
62
Interiors Monthly February 2018
younger generations who like added functionality and gadgets of all kinds. With this in mind, all recliners are available in electric or battery operated options,’ he says. The recliners feature three motors operating the footrest, backrest, and headrest, with some models having a fourth to operate the lift and rise function. Davies suggests the next big thing in reclining chairs will be voice activation using smart technology. ‘Some people think this is just a gimmick but it has a real, practical use. We sell a lot of lift and rise chairs to customers whose medical conditions make it difficult for them to control their chair in the usual way. If they can say “Chair, lift me up” and it will, that would have a great benefit, and this sort of technology can then be easily incorporated into the rest of the range. We’re only two years away from everyone wanting this technology in their homes. They can already control the TV, the lighting, and the heating, using their voice – next is their chair or sofa,’ adds Davies. Email: sandra.spranger@himolla.com

Designflooring again exhibited at Domotex
The new distribution centre Korlok RKP8101 Baltic Washed Oak
Quiet time saver Designflooring enhanced its rigid core collection with Korlok LVT specialist Designflooring introduced its newly expanded rigid core collection Korlok. With a dozen wood designs inspired by European and North American woods, Korlok can reduce noise transfer to rooms below by 19dB, without the need for separate underlay. Designed for an array of residential and commercial environments including multi-level spaces such as offices, apartments and student accommodation, Korlok offers a 6.5mm thickness, 0.55mm wear layer and a 1,420mm x 225mm plank design for extra impact in both large and small spaces. Installation can be over most existing hard surface floors such as ceramic and parquet, or uneven subfloors, without the worry of exposing any imperfections underfoot, thanks to its K-Core technology.
It also features a superior 5G vertical click locking mechanism and pre-attached acoustic foam backing for quick and easy installation. The collection includes Texas White Ash with crisp neutral tones; Washed Butternut with subtle grey undertones; and Canadian Nude Oak, that has been lightly brushed to enhance natural, light colouring. ‘Unlike other rigid core products and click laminate flooring, Korlok can be scored and snapped for ease of installation like our established Gluedown and LooseLay ranges,’ explains Scott Cochrane, Designflooring general manager. ‘The familiar click-locking system and enhanced core technology means installers can achieve an authentic and luxurious floor in any space without the need for adhesive and with minimal
subfloor preparation. It will be a real time saver for installers working to challenging deadlines and commercial clients looking for less upheaval and disruption. ‘Importantly, Korlok offers a new flooring solution for any type of subfloor with a wide array of premium wood designs to choose from,’ he says. Quieter than traditional laminate, it is waterproof, easy to clean and maintain, and compatible with underfloor heating. Designflooring also marked the start of 2018 with a new 102,000sqft European distribution centre in Kerpen, Germany. It can hold more than 300,000sqm of product and will provide European customers with quick access to Designflooring, typically within two days, but next day delivery and collections are available for the first time. Balance the looks Quick-Step debuted products for most areas Quick-Step introduced innovations across several sectors. Thanks to a combination of flexible and firm core layers, Quick-Step’s rigid LVT planks offer optimised acoustics and protection against indentation. The Balance range means the company has a solution for most subfloors: flat, slightly irregular, or irregular with floating or glued installation. ‘Many manufacturers of rigid vinyl flooring use either a homogenous hard backing or wood/plastic composite foam

to give the planks their desired stiffness. However, the homogenous hard backing has a negative effect on the acoustics: when people walk over these floors, you’ll hear an annoying plastic ticking. With WPC on the other hand, the planks aren’t really solid, which makes the floor prone to indentation from, for example, high heels and chair legs,’ says Laurent Meersseman, Unilin flooring division research and development director. Balance combines a firm composite core with flexible layers. Each plank has

four layers: wear, vinyl decor, a resilient layer for comfort and acoustics the company says is unique in the rigid LVT market, and a rigid composite core of a foamed layer between two rigid, glassfibre reinforced layers. In 2014 Quick-Step introduced waterresistant bevelled laminate: this year it is debuting water-resistant non-bevelled floors and expanding its technology to more collections. While the same Uniclic click installation system is used as with bevelled floors, it has an enhanced,

water-repellent layer. The showpiece of this approach is Eligna laminate, which can now easily be installed in damp rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms, including the Metallic Cérusé Oak Gold. ‘A gold floor at home? Not many people would go for it but, because of the luxury trend, I wanted to do something with a touch of gold,’ says Oke Nollett, Quick-Step design director. ‘We chose a design with a warm brown colour and added some subtle gold details to the grain: just enough to fit in with the trend but still stylish and timeless enough to work in any interior.’ Impressive and Majestic are also waterresistant but Meersseman has further ambitions. ‘We won’t stop there. Applying the technology to each laminate collection of our premium
brands – that’s what we’re going for.’ The new Intenso parquet collection is based on the Hungarian point design with planks of different widths and four colours from a soft desert shade to a dark intense colour. Dark brown has also been added to the long, wide planks of the Palazzo collection, with Midnight Oak. This parquet floor is inspired by swamp oak: depending on how long the oak lies in the swamp, the tannins in the wood react with the iron and minerals in the swamp. The result is a deep, dark colour with vibrant colour variations. The Ambient Click LVT tile range has been expanded with six decors, including Carrara based on marble found in the Italian area of Carrara. Visit: www.quick-step.co.uk

Vintage Santorini vinyl
Antique Oak vinyl
Digital vinyl is a hit Digitally printed vinyl was the star among hundreds of launches by BIG Beaulieu International Group launched hundreds of products across carpet, vinyl, laminate, artificial grass, parquet, LVT and mats but it was the digitally printed vinyl that proved the biggest hit. Traditional printing requires a visible repeat in the pattern every 1m x 1m or 1.5m x 1m, which often seems artificial. Digital printing can imitate continuous patterns that can be obtained with modular floors such as vinyl planks, laminates or parquet. Customers can choose from the standard collection Skyline, which all have a continuous large pattern, or have vinyl flooring made to order. Its traditional residential offer saw the introduction of four collections: Tessuto, Vintage, Broadway and Cocoon. Tessuto offers contemporary designs on a textile backing. There are three woven textile styles: Tweed, Denim and

Poplin, in beige, greys, brown and denim colours that can be combined with Damask, a textile chevron, in matching colours. Vintage introduces modern designs in an industrial vintage look built around a dark grey and greige colour palette. The trend towards geometric designs, such as hexagons, sees the Santorini motif that combines wood and concrete inlays. In a matching colour palette, Chamonix is a contemporary Hungarian herringbone design, while Cottage Oak is a brushed wood plank. Volluto offers an all-over driftwood design with an overprint in a baristo theme. All have a pattern repeat of 2m wide and 1.5m long. Broadway is textile-backed and inspired by concrete trends. The collection ranges from all-over concretes such as Pittsburgh, to large 50cm x 50cm concrete tiles that can be combined with
the Idaho rectangular tile motif, which in turn can be colour matched with a painted wood design. These also have a pattern repeat of 2m by 1.5m. The Cocoon collection offers a young and modern approach. With the Stucco design, customers have an option of a concrete with Victorian design stencil that is available in all-over and multipaver tile options. In the geometric theme, Cubes has an all-over concrete with a geometric cube overprint. There are also timeless woods, from a narrow long plank, Prime Oak, to a wide and long plank, Pristine Oak. In LVT, Elite and Spirit offer a wide range of wood and tile designs in gluedown or click versions. BerryAlloc’s laminate offer has 100 new designs as the range is relaunched after major investment in production. Visit: www.bintg.com

Karst de Lange set up the company in Genemuiden
The company has created a logo to mark the event and 200 guests were invited to the centenary dinner
Centenary celebrations Edel Carpets has been operating for 100 years For Edel Carpets business started on 4 April 1918 when Karst de Lange founded Bedrijf E de Lange & Zn. handel in matten en biezen in a building on the Kruisstraat in Genemuiden, northern Holland. Here rush mats were produced by hand. It turned out to be a successful product, which quickly made expansion necessary. Later using machinery, it was possible to produce coir mats as well as roughly shaven car and doormats for domestic markets and for export. With the growing competition from
78
Interiors Monthly February 2018
low income countries and the decreasing demand for these products, in 1959 a transition was made from sisal and coir to broadloom woven carpets using woollen and synthetic yarn. In 1968 Edel invested in the first tufting machine in Genemuiden and in 1974, the first backing facilities. By 1985 the next generation had moved into leadership positions and they further grew the company through the acquisition of Telenzo in 2002, Yarnco in 2009 and further expansion through extrusion in 1999 among others.
The end of the de Lange era was in 2015 when the company was purchased by O2 Capital Partners. The Edel carpet collection now consists of synthetic and woollen carpets for middle and high market segments. Development, production and sales all take place in-house with quality and service highly valued. To mark the start of its centenary year the company hosted 200 guests at the Cavallo restaurant in Hannover on the opening night of Domotex. Visit: www.edeltelenzocarpets.co.uk

Giorgetti’s Adam series of modular sofas, armchairs, chaise longues and pouffes is available in three sizes and highlights the effect of the contrasts, including those between the materials chosen. The metal frame in natural bronze or black nickel reveals trinket storage compartments in leather and fabric.

imm cologne Ewald Schillig’s modular Dolce, available in leather and soft cover, has adjustable headrests and a swivel function.
Inspired by 16th century Persian rugs that were later commissioned by the Polish royal court and dubbed Polonaise, Jan Kath’s interpretation reconstructs the colours, adds new motifs and its trademark antique finishing process.
Monica Forster opted for sophisticated understatement with Melange for Wittmann. The arms of the sofa can open out; the leather chair has hand-stitched piping; and the side table with optional leather top can be used as a stool.
For Leolux, the focus was on luxury seating, a direction it began last year with Elias as the centrepiece. Available in three sizes, Christian Werner’s design has a generous seating depth, complemented with back cushions that follow the soft lines of the back.
GAN teamed up with Swedish design studio Front for the Parquet range of three reversible kilims: Tetragon, Rhomb (pictured) and Hexagon. Their shapes move away from the classic rectangle, and the designs and colours visually enlarge the space in which they are located. ‚‚‚
