EDITOR’S COMMENT
Last man standing? The foam mattress in a box sector is likely to see price become more important as competition increases The past few years have seen a clamour for flooring companies to get into the LVT market, even if it was a product the company had no background in. Now it seems something similar is happening in the furniture sector, with foam mattresses in a box being the new ‘must sell’ product. Sleepeezee plans to move into the market early next year as part of a plan to double sales over the next four years and American online retailer Nectar has joined the battle, including a year-long trial period. When the first in a box mattresses appeared the message was about the science and innovation. Now it faces the prospect of becoming just another commodity product, where shoppers are likely to take the view that one mattress in a box (or bag) is much like any other on offer and opt for whatever one they can find the cheapest. Eve has demonstrated ample evidence of the high cost of gaining customers in this market and it’s likely that the medium-term will see many of the players fail to gain sufficient scale to survive, leaving a handful of names to dominate the market. Retailers (and manufacturers) selling sprung mattresses will be hoping that consumers will be dissatisfied with cheaper products and quickly return to more traditional products. Having gone down the celebrity route with Louise Redknapp, Harveys is investing serious money in promoting the tie-up. The campaign doesn’t mention prices, which is probably a first for Harveys, as it ‘steps outside of the category norms’ as part of a ‘long-term brand reappraisal’. Focusing on the product and not how much the price has been reduced or will shortly be increased by is a welcome move, but will it last? If trading is tough in the run up to the winter sales will there be a return to shouting about price and special offers? The winner of the Interiors Monthly subscription at The Flooring Show (which was really busy) was Matthew Blower, Middlewich Carpets & Flooring, Middlewich, Cheshire.

Sleepeezee sets out plans to double sales by 2022 Bed manufacturer Sleepeezee wants to double sales to £60m by 2022 by increasing exports by promoting its Royal Warrant and entering the foam mattress in a box market. The company is to borrow £5m to invest in marketing, manufacturing, IT and expanding its sales force. Sleepeezee’s parent company Adova has seven production sites in France and has sales of €235m. Joe Wykes, Adova UK ceo said France, China, India and North America will be key royal warrant markets and wants exports to rise by £15m. He wants to introduce the Beautyrest by Simmons bed in a box by the end of March next year, selling direct to consumers and has targeted sales of £10m by 2022. He also wants to increase the average selling price of products and generate £5m of extra sales. Under the plan Sleepeezee would be self-financing by 2020 and achieve a EBITDA margin of 15% by 2022. The foam mattresses will be made at Sleepeezee’s Rochester, Kent factory and the company is considering introducing a second production shift. The mattresses will be delivered by the delivery network it uses for sales to

consumers of the mattresses it makes for Travelodge. Wykes said the company will increase its marketing as it only spends a third of that of the market leaders. On mattresses in a box, he said: ‘We will look to utilise the digital marketing experience of Simmons where sales are c30% online. We should be able to do better marketing for less, compared to more well known brands.’ Adova also plans to introduce its upmarket French bed brand Treca to the UK next year with a store in London.
Whitemeadow invests in design Two more join and development centre The Carpet Foundation
Upholstery manufacturer Whitemeadow has opened a £700,000 design and development facility as it looks to accelerate new designs. The 13,750sq ft facility at its head office in Sutton-in-Ashfield houses the design team, a development team of six upholsterers, three machinists and three CAD operators, who will be responsible for creating production-ready prototypes. The centre also houses a new 3,750sq ft showroom. The previous nearby showroom will now focus on beds. The facility is expected to officially open in early 2019. The company has six locations in the area employing more than 500 people. ‘To be successful in our industry you have to be able to design wow products that excite the public. We’ve invested heavily in the design and development side of our business, because that’s what excites our customers and consumers,’ said Ian Oscroft, Whitemeadow md.

Whitemeadow has invested £700,000 to accelerate products development
‘We’ve been at the cutting edge of furniture design for more than a decade and have always been proactive and prolific at bringing our latest products to market. Our new centre is all about offering people a glimpse into the creative process here at Whitemeadow and showcasing our latest designs and products.’ The design team’s previous offices will become the new location for the manufacturer’s sewing school, as it looks to recruit local staff.
The Carpet Foundation has recruited a further two flooring brands to become patron members, increasing the number to 21. Abingdon Flooring and Wilton Royal have become the latest manufacturing brands to sign up, joining Associated Weavers, Ball & Young Cloud 9, Brockway, Brintons, Cavalier, Cormar Carpet Company, Crucial Trading, Hugh Mackay, Kersaint Cobb, Kingsmead, Penthouse, Regency Carefree, Sebo, Thomas Witter, Telenzo, Ulster Carpets, Victoria Carpets and Whitestone Weavers along with British Wool. The association said the addition of the brands means that more than 70% of the UK carpet industry by volume of production are now supporters. The organisation has also resumed its consumer home interest marketing campaign.

BFC warns on flammability failures The British Furniture Confederation has warned that some motorised upholstery produced in Europe and marked CE may not comply with the flammability regulations. The BFC said guidance from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Health & Safety Executive means furniture labelled CE covers all aspects of safety, including fire safety. ‘The upshot of this guidance appears to be that two items of motorised furniture could be offered for sale in the UK side by side and trading standards would not be able to take any action against the supplier, even though the product did not conform to the current flammability regulations,’ said Jonathan Hindle, BFC chairman. ‘It is our understanding that a product that is CE marked in the EU, but outside the UK, can be CE marked as safe given it follows the guidelines within that country.’ The BFC commissioned a test of a lift and rise recliner that complies with the flammability regulations and an identical chair constructed in materials used in furniture construction in the EU in which both were subjected to a fire source equivalent to a burning match for 20 seconds. The flames on the compliant chair self-extinguished within a few seconds of the source being removed. The noncompliant chair was burnt to a cinder within 10 minutes. The BFC has submitted a video of the test to Kelly Tolhurst, minister for small business, consumers and corporate responsibility. ‘Our main concern is to protect the public by maintaining
8
high levels of fire safety in the home. We believe that this film does demonstrate the ongoing effectiveness of the flammability regulations in protecting the general public and that they need to be retained,’ said Hindle. ‘However, they are in urgent need of updating to reflect modern materials and manufacturing techniques and to ensure environmental concerns are met and we are urging government to engage in meaningful consultation as soon as possible.’ The video can be seen on the BFC’s website.
Ruth Aram
Wilkinson promised greater focus
Aram Store head of retail and marketing Ruth Aram died on 7 September, aged 52, after suffering a brain tumour. ‘Our beloved Ruth has passed away peacefully after a courageous fight against cancer. Her creative passion will live on in all of us here at Aram. Although she knew that time was short, for a year she continued to put all her energy into the things she loved, one of which was Aram Store,’ said her husband Daniel and father Zeev. A qualified landscape architect, Aram worked at the Building Design Partnership and Ikea before joining her father at Aram Designs. In 1991 she opened the second Aram Designs showroom in Hampstead, which went on to become Ruth Aram Shop (RAS). RAS established a reputation for selling some of the most innovative designs available, with The Guardian calling it ‘Hampstead’s chic emporium’. In 2000 RAS merged into Aram Designs becoming the Aram Store.
Dunelm had a ‘difficult and disappointing’ year as it suffered from a ‘weaker grip’ on retail basics as management focused on online integration, according to Nick Wilkinson, Dunelm ceo. Pre-tax and exceptional items profits fell by 6.7% to £102m as it continued to integrate Worldstores, which lost £8.4m. Sales rose by 9.9% to £1.05bn, with like-for-like sales rising by 4.2%, thanks largely to higher online sales as in-store sales rose by 1%. Opening a net nine new stores increased sales space by 6.1%. ‘We have seen profits fall in our last two financial years and we have identified a number of issues and opportunities to improve performance of the core Dunelm business. We need to evolve to a market-leading multichannel offer. The actions to capitalise on the assets acquired with Worldstores are the critical next phase on this journey,’ Wilkinson said. ‘We also have a clear opportunity to improve our customer offer via renewed focus on our value for money credentials. We will reinvigorate our programme of special buys in the coming months and ensure these are prominently displayed in stores and online. ‘We have grown our furniture business over recent years such that furniture, excluding Worldstores, now represents approximately 5% of Dunelm sales, but the proposition is still at an early stage of development. ‘I am excited by the opportunity to develop our furniture offer further across all channels.’

Record for Ulster Carpet manufacturer Ulster Carpets has seen record profits and turnover in its most recent financial year. Profits jumped by 60% to £10.4m as sales rose by 11.5% to £76m in the year to the end of March: both record figures. ‘Our customers tend to recognise and appreciate that Ulster Carpets offers a unique blend of design and product expertise, together with a long record of reliability in deliveries and after-sales service,’ said Edward Wilson, Ulster Carpets chairman. He said the decline in the value of Sterling since the Brexit vote had ‘on balance proved beneficial,’ helping to boost exports. ‘The increase in sales and significant uplift in profits are the result of a highly committed and long-term focus on exporting our products all over the world,’ said Nick Coburn, Ulster Carpets group md. ‘In the past year we have made further major investments into new export markets as the company plans for the next 10 years and beyond. ‘It is also interesting to note that our biggest export markets trade under WTO rules and we deal with those requirements with ease and are no impediment to successful business activity.’
Shows are on the move
Judge departs Headlam
Italian fabric exhibition Proposte is to take place in April next year, rather than its traditional May schedule and run from Monday to Wednesday, rather than the established Wednesday to Friday. The 27th edition of the show will again take place at Villa Erba overlooking Lake Como but from 15-17 April. The show organisers said the decision had been taken ‘after much debate’ and it hoped visitors would be able to combine the show with visiting Salone del Mobile (9-14 April). Meanwhile Decorex is to return to central London next year, and move to October. After four years at Syon Park, Brentford the show will move to Olympia, London. The show had previously been held at the grounds of the Royal Chelsea Hospital for several years. The date of Decorex will also shift to 6-9 October, coinciding with PAD and Frieze Art Fair. Organiser UBM said the week also brings with it a greater concentration of high-networth individuals, a distinct part of the show’s audience.
Flooring distributor Headlam has confirmed the departure of Tony Judge, chief operating officer, after 26 years with the group. The group said Judge ‘is to step down from the board ahead of leaving the company in March 2019. During this period, Tony will continue to work with the company to provide an orderly transition of his duties.’ The group said it was beginning a search for a UK operations director to assume a number of the coo’s responsibilities. Judge was promoted from commercial director of the Coleshill and Tamworth businesses such as Crucial Trading, Lifestyle Floors and Gaskell Wool Rich, in September 2016, when Steve Wilson, then Headlam finance director succeeded Tony Brewer as chief executive. Judge joined the board in March 2017. ‘On behalf of the board, I would like to express our appreciation to Tony for his considerable contribution over the last 26 years, and particularly during the past two years. The board and our colleagues across the group wish him well for the future,’ said Wilson.

Richard Renouf
Future gazing A crystal ball could become an essential tool Today’s first call was not on the satnav. I should’ve guessed, it was a blown vinyl floor covering in a new build property so it was hardly likely to have made it to Google Maps. If only I had a crystal ball. Instead I resort to a search on Zoopla to find a house on the same street for rent, then track down the location from the postage stamp of a map on the listing. It’s the same when the address is simply [House Name], [Village]. The postcode might be good enough to get me near, but finding an ivy-covered house name by peering through hedges and fences is no easy task. And in Ireland they don’t even put the house names up, as I found out after trying three properties with black fences that weren’t the customer’s (he’d decided to be elsewhere and asked me to let myself in). I managed to avoid getting arrested. A crystal ball would have been useful during the second inspection, too. As well as telling me if the customer was going to be home at the appointed time or if I would have to wait ten minutes
because they’d forgotten I was coming, it would have helped me understand what had happened. Those chips on the edge of the worktop weren’t done by ‘the washing up bowl’, it would have been good to gaze into the orb rather than simply having to guess. The locked understairs cupboard door on my third call was another mystery a crystal ball might have solved. Would I have seen the steam cleaner that had obviously caused the laminate flooring joints to swell and chip, but which the customer denied using? Or maybe the family of Alsatian dogs that had left their hair all over the settee but were strangely absent for the duration of my visit? I’d love to be able to gaze into a crystal ball to see whether ‘We never sit on that part of the suite/walk on that part of the floor/let our children or dogs go in that room’ is true or not. I certainly have my doubts. And as for predictions, how about a crystal ball to tell me what reaction I’m going to get when I have to tell a customer what’s gone wrong rather than

letting them find out by reading my report? Most customers are receptive and understanding but some won’t accept the obvious and would rather argue (that’s why I’ve learned to always park facing in the right direction for a quick getaway if the customer asks me to leave). Predicting what will happen next is also something which needs special physic powers. Will the parties accept the expert’s view, get round the table and sort it out, or continue to argue in spite of the evidence? If they don’t know what to do to resolve the issue, will they seek further help so they get it right or simply repeat the same mistakes so the problem recurs? Sometimes for the umpteenth time because they think they know best. I found a crystal ball two weeks ago in a second-hand shop and I have it here. There’s just one problem: the batteries are flat and I can’t work out how to change them. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com Richard Renouf is an independent furnishings consultant

The store has Instagram friendly windows
Habitat’s first stand-alone store for a decade has a pared-back look allowing shoppers to concentrate on the products. The 4,700sq ft store at the Westfield London shopping centre – its third largest until the 6,500sq ft unit opens in central Brighton next month – builds on the experiences of the 11 Mini Habitat stores within Sainsbury’s supermarkets, the stand-alone Habitat Mini in Leeds and the 2016 re-design of its Tottenham Court Road flagship store. ‘The space has been built around a white cube framework that allows us to layer a variety of product, bright colours, shapes and patterns on top without making it visually overwhelming for customers,’ says Matthew Long, Habitat

Checkerboard flooring has been selected for the entrance foyer to act as a backdrop to highlight the bright colour palette that Habitat is known for. To the left, an adaptable installation and events cube will house design collaborations and small customer workshops that will take place in the store each month. Further inside a light natural oak flooring has been chosen as a base to showcase larger furniture and upholstery items, which allows customers to better visualise products within their own home. A 60-piece raft installation hangs from the ceiling to break up the height of the ceiling and give a more domestic, inviting feel to the store. ‘We want customers to go on an experience in this store and discover the many design aesthetics that exist within the Habitat collection,’ says Amy Rich, Habitat visual merchandising manager. ‘Both architecture and visual merchandising has been devised to draw the eye into the store from the main shopping mall walkways, starting with a wall of bold colour and pattern and being led through by the undulating design of the raft design at different

Hall Of Fame Award Martin Curtis Curtis is a man who has devoted his lifetime to supporting the British wool industry. As the leading light at Curtis Wool, he drove the business forward with a passion and determination that is rarely seen in a single individual. Then, having stepped away from that business, over the last few years he has headed up the Wool Carpet Focus Group, an organisation committed to reversing the declining use of wool as a fibre in carpet manufacturing. His commitment to the cause and ability to lead a disparate group of companies and individuals has been an inspiration for those around him, with everyone working that little bit harder to try and help him achieve his objectives. Curtis deserves the recognition and induction into the Hall of Fame as a reflection of the tireless work he has undertaken over many years in promoting wool as the best possible fibre for use in many interiors products.

Maggie Throup cut the ribbon to open The Exchange
Jackie Bazeley and Erewash MP Maggie Throup
New home The BFM has moved to Long Eaton As it celebrates flying the furnishings flag from its new home in one of the UK’s manufacturing heartlands, the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) is set to be at the heart of a new push to promote British-made products. The official opening of its new premises at The Exchange, Long Eaton, organised by associate member Orbital Vision, was presided over by local MP Maggie Throup and marked the beginning of a new era of community for the furnishings sector. Not only is the BFM’s new base at the centre of UK upholstery production but on the doorstep of the twice-yearly Long Point exhibition. In an area teeming with industry professionals, The Exchange has just been named as the new headquarters for the Heart of England regional committee for The Furniture Maker’s Company, as well as Orbital Vision, the digital marketing agency tailored specifically to the furniture industry. And it is The Long Eaton Guild’s ‘neutral hub’. All this, plus its close proximity to many BFM members with more than 50 furnishing sector manufacturers and allied companies in the area, sets the scene on a new era of Great British Furniture.

Visitors were asked to sign plaques to mark the opening
‘We believe our refreshed and revitalised Great British Furniture campaign comes at a timely moment, offering a powerful tool for bringing the furnishings community together and promoting British-made products,’ says Jackie Bazeley, BFM md. The association’s GBF campaign, originally launched more than 12 years ago, has proved a significant promotion, raising awareness of the key factors that put the ‘Great’ into British-made furniture in the eyes of consumers, retailers, contract specifiers, architects and the wider international audience. Its key messages include the sheer diversity of the industry, positioning British furniture as traditional, contemporary and everything in between; suiting any financial budget; and appealing to the more morally or ethically aware.
‘We believe that the moment is right for the industry to once again get behind a campaign that supports and promotes British furniture manufacturing and there was a real feeling for that at the official opening of our new office. It served as a happy occasion with a real sense of industry support for a community space that is already bringing the sector together,’ says Bazeley Among those attending the event were Wade Springs, Ercol, Gascoigne, Artistic Upholstery, David Gundry and Collins & Hayes along with representatives from Erewash Borough Council and Long Eaton Chamber of Trade. The BFM’s GBF campaign features useful marketing materials and the reassurance of its recently introduced Code of Practice. Visit: www.bfm.org.uk
Our British furniture manufacturers are committed to providing the highest levels of comfort, safety and quality to their customers - just three of the traits that make out Great British furniture ‘great’. IT IS furniture for any age, style, budget or taste. IT IS for the traditional, contemporary, classical or modern home and office and contract markets. IT IS desired and admired the world over.

Experience tells Parker Knoll continues to break new ground
The Parker Knoll story is a thoroughly British tale. From humble beginnings in a simple workshop in London, Parker Knoll has put down roots in the heart of British furniture design, establishing itself as a leading manufacturer in the UK. All the sofas and chairs at Parker Knoll are handcrafted in Britain to the highest of standards, drawing on 148 years of experience. With an ongoing commitment to driving innovation and being at the forefront of contemporary design, Parker Knoll continues to launch an array of exciting models, fabrics and collections to its portfolio. Parker Knoll continues to bring motion to new heights with its latest collection, Manhattan. Following the success of evolution, and the continued success of LifeStyle, Parker Knoll has developed its new motion range to bridge the gap between the ultra-modern evolution range and the contemporary and transition LifeStyle collection. Much like evolution, Manhattan has been fitted with a USB port with a brushed chrome finish. Designed with a high-leg motion mechanism and an extendable footrest, Parker Knoll has ensured uses can recline in style. To support the new range the brand welcomes a new range of luxury plains and chenilles as well as new easycare collection. Storage rules Sweet Dreams has increased its ottoman options Sweet Dreams, which is celebrating 30 years in business this year, has launched three fabric-upholstered bedframes with ottoman options, all made on its own premises. Lisbon, Faro and Porto all feature in Book 18, the company’s latest brochure revealed at the Bed Show. Each of the three frames comes in three sizes including superking and is available as a standard model with freestanding, sprung-slatted base delivered hinged with the slats ready-inserted for quick and easy assembly. Self-buttoned headboard and wooden legs add to the attraction.
For those looking for storage as well as style, these three models are also available as full, front-opening ottoman beds with standard sprung slats, in double and king size. The models are upholstered in the new Sweet Dreams collection of fabrics that include plush, crushed and textured velvet and diverse plain and patterned fabrics including Tulip, the floral print that wowed visitors to the Bed Show last month. Tulip was shown on two more new models made in the UK – Garland and Vivien – striking for their deeply upholstered, self-buttoned headboards and footends. They too have sprung
slatted bases and in common with most of the fabric frames, come in three sizes. Nor does the own-made 2018 fabricupholstered offer from Sweet Dreams end there. There’s one more new Britishmade frame: Bergman, with sprung slatted base and boudoir looks. These six new beds complement the current range of UK-made fabric bedframes bringing the total, including TV beds, to 21 – plus Ultra in the adjustable range. Fabric bedframes have been part of the extensive Sweet Dreams range since 2002. They continue to add considerable, show-stopping heft to the manufacturer’s British-made offer. Där Lighting’s Onza
Lighting the way British manufacturing will be to the fore Variety, choice, multiple options – however you describe it, the 2019 January Furniture Show will be a complete treasure trove for furniture and interiors buyers, with leading British companies in every hall. More than 500 exhibitors, mainly from the UK, will launch thousands of products in furniture, lighting, flooring, accessories and soft furnishings. As the UK’s largest furniture and furnishings event, JFS is the prime source of furniture and furnishing products for retailers and buyers from all sectors of the market: volume, mid and high-end. Although the show features companies from around the world it is dominated by British companies, many of whom are revered for their expertise and quality. Furniture manufacturing in the UK is in the top three areas of manufacturing growth according to Government statistics, and the sector rose to a turnover of £11.3bn in 2016-2017.
Showing that British companies have flair, expertise and desirable products will be a throng of well known UK brands, including: Ashley Manor, Ashwood Designs, Buoyant, Celebrity, Ercol, Highgrove Beds, Kingstown, Lebus, Parker Knoll, Sealy, Silentnight, Sherborne, Westbridge and Whitemeadow. New developments for 2019 will highlight some of the best of British with a new bed zone in Hall 5 that will be full of British companies. As well as Silentnight and Highgrove Beds,
exhibiting will be Furmanac, Birlea, Haani, Highgate, Hyder Living and Vogue. Motion, memory, coil sprung and ottomans are just some of the different bed and mattress models that will be on display. Another new development will be a new lighting section called LIGHT. It will feature more than 20 UK lighting companies including Searchlight, Oaks Lighting, Illuminati Lighting and Elstead. Joining them is Där Lighting, which returns to the show with a long list of new trend-setting designs. LIGHT will offer the most extensive array of lighting at the event to date, covering everything from modern industrial lights and lamps to large-scale light installations and chandeliers. The market is worth £30m-£40m
On the up Growth is set to continue for protectors The market for mattress and pillow protectors, enhancers and toppers is still developing. It is estimated to be worth £30-£40m at trade prices in 2018, according to new research by AMA Research. According to its new Household Textiles Market Report – UK 2018-2022 report, growth in this market has been relatively strong between 2014-2017 with growth rates of around 6%-7% per year, but estimates for 2018 and forecasts until 2022 are for steady but low-level growth at a rate of around 3%. There has been some polarisation in the distribution sector, where the market has seen a trade up to more expensive
products at the higher end, while the growth in the discount retailer segment, and their widening product offering, has led to growth at the lower end too. The market is typified by more elementary products at one end and added value, premium products at the other. Given the fact that these products can extend the replacement cycle for other aspects of bedding, whilst also improving hygiene factors, they have gradually risen in popularity. However, in the domestic market, they have traditionally appealed more to parents with young children, or for use by the elderly or sick. The ability to increase comfort does however have more widespread appeal, says the report.
Mattress protectors have traditionally appealed more to parents with young children
38
Interiors Monthly October 2018
Key factors which impact upon sales within this market include: An ageing population, with increasing numbers wishing to live in their own homes for longer, which is driving demand for products which ease aching joints, as well as facilitating cleaning and maintenance. Extensive availability, alongside other bedding items, both online and in discount stores, has opened up the market for these products, making them more visible and more affordable. A concern with allergies, such as asthma and hay fever, has increased demand for hypoallergenic and antiallergy products which can command a higher price tag. An increase in the numbers of people renting accommodation, including student lets, with a desire to revive tired and well-worn mattresses with the addition of enhancers and toppers. A range of natural materials including breathable bamboo toppers with a bamboo filling, which is said to be moisture wicking, anti-bacterial and temperature regulating. In the more mainstream domestic market, these items may be considered non-essential purchases and are therefore subject to the vagaries of consumer spending and levels of disposable income. AMA estimates that of the UK’s duvet, pillow, mattress protector, cushions and seat cover market, mattress protectors make up 6% of sales, with duvets accounting for 41% of sales, cushions and seat covers 39% and pillows 14%. Snow uses the new Nordic Chill fibre
‘We have just launched brand new cutting edge dynamic TV display bays and new packaging innovations which have had a massive impact on business and on the horizon is a raft of new videography which brings the brand and product category to life in a fun way.’ ‘Every mattress needs protection. We sweat a significant amount every night along with shedding millions of dead skin cells. Mattresses are like big sponges and these contaminants will degrade the comfort layers in the mattress – latex, foams, springs, natural fillings and fibres, causing the mattress to deteriorate over time and creating an unhealthy and unhygienic sleep environment. ‘Our newly designed Nordic Chill fibre, used in our Snow Protector and new Snow pillow feels cooler to the touch than other fabrics through high thermal conductivity. Polyester’s conductivity is
0.05w/mK, whereas Nordic Chill Fibre’s is 0.17w/mK- 0.31w/mK. When you touch it, it transfers heat away from your skin almost 10 times faster than cotton fibre.’ Visit: www.protectabed.co.uk

Start-up success The Great Chair Company has achieved much in its first year ‘The Great Chair Company has had many achievements since launch: AIS and Minerva accreditation, new accounts every single week and the Interiors Monthly Best New Supplier award and incredibly we are not even one year old,’ says Mark Symes, The Great Chair Company commercial director. ‘We have created something special at The Great Chair Company, our business is full of energy, buzzing with excitement and bursting with passion. We haven’t stopped and now have more than 200 accounts, but the evidence of success can be measured in more than just accounts: the true measure is repeat orders. Just

last week 123 accounts sent us repeat orders, we think that’s amazing. We are delighted that consumers are loving our chairs and are extremely grateful to our retail partners for such support.’ At the AIS Bed Show in August the company introduced a small range of upholstered bed frames as part of its plan to capitalise on its quick delivery program and existing customer base. ‘It looks like we have a certain winner here, with retailers telling us the values are incredible, and, complimented by our express delivery, we are already well on the way to establishing a strong addition to the brand. We have five new bed frame designs to add Malmesbury which we expect Plush in olive to show at the January Furniture Show,’ says Symes. The company has been busy making

sure its stock is in place to fulfil demand, and Symes says he is completely confident that it is in the right place now to service its customers with the speed of delivery to meet expectations. ‘There is nothing more exciting and rewarding in our business than starting a new concept, building around your great people, establishing systems to support and allow the business to breath and flourish, developing exciting and commercial products and most importantly, having nurtured all these things, seeing your brand stand-up to be counted and stride into the market place with confidence and determination and deliver success,’ adds Symes. New track For the past six months, the growing team at Orbital has been establishing itself as a centre of furniture marketing, culminating in the physical launch of its new home at The Exchange in Long Eaton. Online, progress has been equally dynamic. Since the London Fabric Show, its enVision engine has been under constant redevelopment. The vision is to provide a platform for the interiors market to trade their goods in a common space, enabling retailers to pitch their goods across product types and
‘sell the room’ whilst being able to make tailor made selections along the way, in a realistic roomset environment, Already on board are some of the country’s leading fabric wholesalers, furniture, cabinet, bed makers and retailers. ‘The key to this magic is a combination of the deep experience, flair and creative mind of my fellow director Matt O’Flynn and my background in marketing, technology graphic design, photography and product development, says Rob Walker. ‘The appreciation of the products we are marketing is virtually unreal, nothing looks fake, which reflects this glorious partnership which has been in the making for over a decade. It is exciting, engaging, clever. And promises to create a whole new track to the consumer for the entire supply chain.’ Visit: www.orbital.vision

POLAND
Tiger marches on Poland has seen furniture exports double in a decade ’I have lived and breathed furniture for 16 of the past 27 years I have lived in this country. I don’t care too much for statistics, preferring to just get on with the job, but even I was staggered to discover how far this country has come since I first started exporting furniture in 2002,’ says Gordon Milne, M7 Polska director. M7 Polska assists British, French and German companies source furniture throughout Poland. ‘Poland is now the sixth largest producer in the world, the third largest in Europe. Its exports are the second strongest in Europe and year-on-year growth is in excess of 7%. Almost 180,000 people are employed in the Polish furniture industry, making it one of the largest sectors in the Polish economy and accounting for more than 2% of GDP. Almost half of all Polish manufacturers export, which is no mean accomplishment seeing as only 1.5% of Polish companies are considered medium or large companies. Exports will be almost €11bn this year: double that of 10 years ago. ‘This is impressive by any standards, and Poland’s inexorable march towards becoming the tiger of European furniture manufacturing shall continue unabated. However, it was not
56
Interiors Monthly October 2018
always like that. In the 1990s, Poland was known as a cheap source of furniture: with a third of the country covered by forests, it couldn’t be anything but. That very soon changed to becoming known as a cheaper and reliable source of quality furniture. ‘And now, walking around this year’s IMM Cologne exhibition, it was so impressive to see so many Polish design companies, as well as Polish manufacturers exhibiting their own collections, made and designed in Poland. ‘To stay ahead, Polish companies are also becoming leaner and more mechanised and they understand the client’s need for dependability. My dining chair manufacturer has bought his own testing rigs and is slowly testing his whole range. He, like others, was quick to learn the value of repeat business. ‘In my time, I have been asked to source everything from shopfittings, care home furniture, to upholstery and solid wood furniture, the staples of Polish production. ‘Today our furniture industry is as strong as ever. I am very proud of it and I am not surprised that Polish furniture can be found all over the world. In my opinion it is simply the best.’ Visit: www.m7polska.com

Specialist technology and high functionality EGGER PRO Design Flooring has a very compact product composition made up of a TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane) surface with an integrated decor, a high density and double sealed UWF coreboard (Ultra Wood Fibre Board) and a water-resistant high-end balancer. The TPU layer gives the floor a special memory function (self-repair) and contributes to the scratch resistance of the board to keep the floor looking good for longer. A combination of the UWF coreboard and the high-end balancer makes the floor water-resistant and thermo-stable, which prevents warping if the floor gets wet or if environmental conditions change. All of the boards in the PRO Design range are 5mm thick, and have a R10 rated anti-slip texture. The thickness of the board makes them easy to install and they work well alongside underfloor heating systems.
Environmentally friendly 70% of EGGER PRO Design Flooring is made from natural wood fibres

making it more environmentally friendly than other primarily plasticbased flooring products on the market. It is 100% PVC and plasticisers free, which benefits the environment and helps to promote clean indoor living.

Stay warm The look of stone with practical benefits Natural stone has inspired interiors for thousands of years: the ancient Greeks, for example, created mosaic floors to form decorative images and distinctive patterns. Since then the natural beauty of stone flooring has always been present, from classic marble to bold slates and contemporary concrete. To achieve the iconic look of stone flooring but with all the benefits of LVT, Karndean Designflooring’s product designers travel the world in search of interesting natural forms and then authentically recreate their unique look in long-lasting designs. Softer and warmer than natural stone flooring, Karndean’s stone design tiles provide a cosy surface in rooms where extra warmth is desired. In addition, Karndean’s designs can also be easily combined with underfloor heating. Suitable for pairing with both electrical underfloor heating and water-based systems, Karndean flooring can be installed over sub-floors prepared with a suitable smoothing compound. Inspired by natural stone, Karndean’s designs replicate the textures and characteristics of real stone. Waterproof, easy to clean and quiet underfoot,

Opus, Fumo SP216
Karndean flooring is designed for hardworking floors such as bathrooms, hallways and kitchens. Marble is an iconic stone and remains a popular material when it comes to creating an opulent interior. Its iridescent beauty has been skilfully captured by Karndean in a range of designs. The premium Art Select collection features black and white Otono and Fiore tiles that replicate the soft and intricate veining of real marble. The tiles can be used on their own, as a chequerboard design or with classic clipped corners. A simple way of breathing fresh air into a home is with the rich, organic hues of limestone. Each design brings a calming and indulgent ambience. Using
a rare formation of limestone sourced from the Lake District as inspiration, the Opus collection offers Fumo in both an extra-large tile and a smaller herringbone tile to match. The smoky grey appearance of Fumo works effectively in both traditional and contemporary interiors. ‘Karndean is the practical choice for flooring, giving all the aesthetic appeal of natural stone with a welcome warmer finish. Decorators can be confident choosing Karndean flooring in combination with underfloor heating systems as all our designs are compatible, as long as the surface temperature setting is less than 27deg C,’ says Stella Coyle, Karndean national retail sales manager.
