Urtica Nettle in diets for dogs There is much interest in dietary health supplements for dogs and cats with a plethora of research directives leading to novel bioactive agents as dietary supplements. Ocean plants like seaweed is becoming an important consideration, but various terrestrial plants are also being viewed positively. One very interesting development is the common stinging nettle Urtica dioica and is being advocated through extensive scientific research efforts with many animals. . Urtica dioica, commonly known as nettle, is a versatile plant with a rich history of medicinal use in traditional human and veterinary medicine. It is renowned for its potential health benefits, thanks to its wide array of bioactive compounds. Urtica nettle has been used for centuries in human and veterinary medicine, and recent research suggests that it may provide various health advantages for dogs when incorporated into their diet. Urtica nettle is a nutritional powerhouse, containing essential vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds that contribute to its health-promoting properties. These include Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, B-vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9), minerals and trace elements such as iron, zinc, selenium, magnesium and the macro-elements, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. The latter are vital for bone fortification and neurological support. Micronutrients rich in nettle have primary importance in metabolism and physiological processes in the canine animal system. They will play major co-enzyme roles in important energy yielding pathways in cells and also be involved in structural and transport proteins in the body of dogs. Urtica contains numerous bioactive compounds that can modulate the health of dogs as part of their defensive mechanisms. As such, they are termed Bioactive Compounds and include flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, lectins, chlorophyll, and silica. These nutritional components make nettle a valuable addition to a dog’s diet, potentially supporting their overall health. •

Anti-inflammatory Properties: Nettle contains compounds like quercetin and kaempferol, which exhibit anti-inflammatory and functional effects. These properties can aid in managing inflammatory conditions in dogs, such as arthritis and allergies and combatting stress and tolerance to the changing environment such as temperature fluctuations and exercise as reported by Buhad et al. (2020)

Antioxidant Effects: The high content of antioxidants in nettle helps neutralize free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and the risk of chronic diseases in dogs. This is especially useful in heavy periods of activity, exercise and following disease events and recovery to infection. Diet supplementation may mitigate these factors and aid in post treatments to vaccines and therapeutic agents (Morsy et al. 2019) Immunity: Stojanović et al. (2021) described the immune support attributes for nettle in diets for dogs. Vitamins and minerals in nettle can contribute to a stronger immune system, helping dogs better fight off infections and illnesses. The action of selenium, zinc, and Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) play a major role in immunecompetence and support the complement pathways that work in synergy with the specific and innate immune system in dogs. Allergy Management: Nettle may assist in managing allergies in dogs due to its antihistamine properties, which can help alleviate symptoms such as itching and inflammation. This would have significance in different seasons when dogs may be more exposed to viral, bacterial, fungal and ectoparasites and especially in the summer when more pollen may be present. Nutrient Absorption: Nettle’s nutritional content can enhance the absorption of essential nutrients in a dog’s diet, improving overall health and vitality. The effect on the gut architecture to enhance assimilation of nutrients and the modulation of the gut microbiome will be an important area to further explore the attributes of nettle in the canine diet.

In conclusion, Urtica nettle is a natural dietary supplement that holds promise for enhancing the health and well-being of dogs. Its nutritional and chemical properties, as well as its documented anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immuneboosting effects, make it a compelling addition to a dog’s diet. While the scientific evidence supporting its benefits is still growing, the existing studies suggest that nettle can be a valuable component of a holistic approach to canine health. However, consultation with a veterinarian is recommended before introducing any new supplement into a dog’s diet to ensure safety and appropriateness for individual animals.

The PetFood Journal

International Petfood - December 2023 | 9

2023

Petfood Journal is a new online publication by Perendale Publishers Ltd., United Kingdom with a distinguished track record of technical and trade magazines in the agricultural sciences. This new peer-reviewed scientific journal will serve academia and the commercial petfood industry with high quality papers relating to the science and technology of petfood development and production for the rapidly expanding companion animal sector. It is envisaged to address fundamental and applied nutritional research addressing requirements for advanced feed production manufacturing for dogs, cats and many other species such as guinea pigs, rabbits, rats and exotics e.g. reptiles, amphibia and fish (aquatics). The journal will embrace information on essential amino acids, proteins and energy sources as well as key vitamins and minerals pertaining to maintenance, growth, feed utilisation efficiency and health. A major area will be studies that focus on feed ingredient assessment and in particular those that are sustainable alternatives to traditional sources. Therefore investigations directed towards plant and next generation proteins like insect meal, algae and microbial sources would be desirable areas. Novel oils and lipids that provide essential fatty acids would be of considerable importance. Studies on functional ingredients affecting the health and immune function of pet animals are attractive. We would welcome papers researching the role of prebiotics, probiotics and phytobiotics on gut health, mucosal immunity and their interaction and modulation of the intestinal microbiota. Petfoods play a significant role in animal behaviour due to palatability and smell. Research on these interactions would be welcome and of interest to the scientific community and stakeholders. Given the diversity of different types of commercial diets ranging from wet, canned and extruded dry diets as well as treats and speciality diets, there is much scope to provide information on these advances. We also cover papers on feed production manufacture such as milling, pelleting, shaping and texture of petfoods such as extrusion. The journal recognises that petfood science & manufacturing technology plays a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of our pets. Optimal feed management and environmental impact of diets are worthy of inclusion. Manuscripts can consist of scientific work in the form of typical standard papers, short scientific communications or as review articles. In essence, Petfood Journal will appeal to the veterinary practitioner, scientist, technician, feed manufacturer and at various levels in academia such as undergraduate, masters, PhD students and post-doctoral, researcher, being an invaluable source of validated information and a potential location for their own research findings. The manuscripts will be fully peer-reviewed by appropriate members of our editorial board and approved finally by the Editor-in Chief. These OA papers will be available on our official website Internationalpetfood.co.uk and printed as well as being downloadable. Links will be provided within our existing International Petfood magazine. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with any queries at journal@perendale.co.uk.

Packaged facts report shows Petfood consumers feel the inflationary squeeze Although inflation in the Petfood market has levered off in the second half of 2023, Petfood consumers are still facing inflation-driven price increases. For the first time in recent years, the double-digit growth in this US$51 billion market has been driven almost entirely by higher prices rather than premiumisation, and higher-income pet owners’ share of spending has dropped. Packaged Facts’ new report Pet Food in the US, seventeenth edition, examines the chinks in the pet food market’s armour caused by the current economic environment, as well as the trends that are the market’s

saving grace, among them fresh pet foods, sciencebased and functional formulations and an overall focus on pet food as the number one pet health and wellness product. The report examines opportunities in this market for growth, with health and wellness-focused offerings and value proposition at the top of the list. Packaged Facts survey results show that 78 percent of dog owners and 84 percent of cat owners rate Petfood among the most important pet health products, more so than flea/ tick and heartworm medications or pet supplements, reflecting the importance placed on pet food when it comes to pet health and wellness. Even when pet owners change to lower-priced options, they still seek out formulations with quality ingredients. Packaged Facts survey results show that among the one-third of pet owners who changed foods in the past twelve months, approximately one-third of dog owners and nearly as many cat owners had switched to lowerpriced formulations. That said, pet owner confidence in lower-priced products is high, with 37 percent of pet owners agreeing that private label options provide the same or better quality compared to national brands. Other market opportunities discussed in the report include fresh pet foods, functional formulations, humangrade offerings and cat-specific products.

Minebea Intec celebrates its anniversary at the Aachen site Minebea Intec, a leading global provider of industrial weighing and inspection solutions, proudly celebrates the 75th anniversary of its Aachen site on 26 November. Not only is the inspection business managed from here, but check weighers and metal detectors are also manufactured and software is developed in the Aachen production halls. The portfolio also includes X-ray and visual inspection systems as well as automatic price labelling systems. These technologies ensure maximum product quality and efficiency in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, Minebea Intec can look back on a long history at the Aachen site, characterised by pioneering developments and continuous progress. The history of Minebea Intec’s Aachen site began in 1948 with the company Dr Hans Boekels GmbH & Co, which developed metal detectors for detecting unexploded ordnance and bombs. In the following decades, the development of metal detection technology was driven forward, primarily by increasing automation in the food industry and the associated risk of contamination. The introduction of phase rectifiers at the end of the 1970s enabled better suppression of interfering product signals. Adaptation to ever higher frequencies increased detection sensitivity. Today, Minebea Intec metal detectors operate at frequencies of up to 1 MHz. This enables a maximum search sensitivity of 0.2mm with the smallest coil and highest frequency – which means that the company can confidently count itself among the most advanced manufacturers in the industry. In addition to metal detection technology, Dr Hans Boekels GmbH & Co revolutionised the dynamic check weigher in 1969 with EMFC load cells developed in-house. In 1998, Sartorius AG took over the Boekels company. Ten years later, the product range was expanded to include X-ray inspection systems. Following the takeover by the MinebeaMitsumi Group,

the company was renamed Minebea Intec in 2016. Innovation is the key to Minebea Intec’s success. “We pride ourselves on constantly setting new standards for the industry,” says André Stoppelenburg, Head of the Inspection Division at Minebea Intec. “One example of our innovative strength is our new Mitus metal detector with flexible MiWave technology, which enables highprecision detection of metallic foreign objects.” With this new technology, products can be symbolically inspected from multiple perspectives. This ensures a significantly higher information content and therefore an even higher search sensitivity. The result for manufacturers: maximum product safety and maximum output. The Dypipe X-ray inspection system is also one of the innovations that Minebea Intec launched onto the market this year. X-ray inspection systems are used in industry when producers want to reliably detect and eject foreign bodies such as stone, plastic particles, bone and glass as well as metal or check fill levels. “our Dypipe X-ray inspection system offers unrivalled flexibility for the inspection of vicious and liquid products,” says André Stoppelenburg. “With various separators, connections and mounting options, customers can optimise their production lines.” An innovative test part insertion system enables the validation of test parts during operation and specially developed reject valves ensure maximum hygiene, especially in meat applications. Minebea Intec offers a broad portfolio of weighing and inspection technologies. In addition to these products, customers also receive check weighers, industrial scales, load cells, visual inspection devices and automatic price labelling systems. The company also offers comprehensive consulting and services. Minebea Intec’s customers therefore not only benefit from the company’s many years of experience, but also have a competent partner at their side throughout the entire project planning process thanks to this holistic approach.

Shepherd Boy farms launches freeze-dried raw petfood Crafted in Indiana, Shepherd Boy Farms is a highquality supplier of some of the best meat in the US. With years of experience raising and selling meat all over the country, the family-owned company set out to raise the bar for pet manufacturers with the debut of their Freeze-Dried Raw Dog Food. Made with raw ingredients sourced directly from US farms, each recipe includes a premium protein option combined with organic whole fruits and vegetables. Every formula is thoughtfully made without synthetic supplements, grain, gluten, additives and preservatives. Shepherd Boy Farms’ Freeze-Dried Raw Dog Food can be fed as a complete and balanced meal or as a nutritious topper. “Our mission since the very beginning has been to provide top-quality, farm to table foods at affordable prices to pet parents across the country,” commented Ashton Hood, owner of Shepherd Boy Farms. “We all want the absolute best for our pets, and that’s why we only use wholesome meat and fresh vegetables to create the perfect blend of nutrients that pets need to thrive.” All of the brand’s products are made in-house, following a tried and true process. To start, the food is

flash-frozen to lock in the fresh and intense flavour pets love. Next, it’s put into a vacuum chamber at sub-zero temperatures, which gently extracts moisture without the loss of nutrients. During the sublimation stage, a low, radiant heat is applied to further remove any moisture without cooking the food. Once the moisture content of the food is low enough, it’s completely freeze-dried and shelf-stable. Available in four different protein options, including Chicken, Beef, Bison and Fish Medley, the food comes in a 14-ounce bag for a suggested retail price of US$35.95.

Petsense adds NutriSource pet food to its lineup Petsense by Tractor Supply announces it has added NutriSource pet food to its extensive lineup of premium dog and cat food offerings. Biotechnology in Petfood Enhancing Quality & Sustainability

T

by Robson Barducci, Anderson Dias & Leticia Pacheco, R&D Specialists, Biorigin, Brazil

he word ‘biotechnology’ can be divided into two parts where ‘bio’ refers to living organisms such as cells, bacteria, yeast, and plants, and ‘technology’ refers to the practical application of scientific knowledge. Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field that utilises living organisms, biological systems, and processes to develop products and technologies that benefit society. The process involved in obtaining additives from yeast generally involves five stages (strain selection, cultivation, fermentation, purification, and drying), which may vary depending on the purpose of the product (protein source, prebiotic, flavor enhancer, among others). The application of biotechnology in this context has the potential to improve the quality, nutrition, and sustainability of pet foods, contributing to the health and well-being of the animal. We can mention some ways in which biotechnology in yeast production can add value to pet foods: • Nutritional quality: the possibility of applying different processes to yeast to make specific nutrients available, such as making protein more accessible through hydrolysis, increasing the production of vitamins, minerals, or essential fatty acids in yeast. • Digestibility: Yeast-derived products can aid in the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, as well as the availability of nutrients. • Production of functional compounds: Assisting in the production of specific functional compounds that offer health benefits. • Alternative and sustainable ingredients: Production of alternative and sustainable ingredients for the food industry. • Customisation of food: It is possible to develop yeast that

produces specific compounds based on individual needs according to the specific characteristics and conditions of each animal, providing a more suitable and personalized diet.

Meeting variety of needs

Combining advances in biotechnology with the nutritional and health needs of pets, it is possible to develop healthier, sustainable and personalised foods to meet the demands of pet owners. Biorigin has stood out in this field for over 20 years, bringing different biotechnologies that provide different benefits to yeast, including: Protein source: Yeast is an excellent source of high-quality protein with great sustainable potential. Commonly, we have dried inactive yeast (NutriCell) and hydrolyzed yeast (HiCell). It contains a good variety of essential amino acids necessary for the health of pets. Adding yeast to pet food helps increase protein content and improve overall nutritional quality. Vitamins and minerals: Yeast is a natural source of various essential vitamins and minerals. It contains B-complex vitamins such as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and folic acid, which play vital roles in metabolism and the nervous system of animals. Additionally, yeast is rich in minerals like zinc, selenium, and chromium, which are important for overall pet health. Palatability and flavor: Yeast has an appealing taste for many pets. It can be used as a natural ingredient to enhance the palatability of food and encourage pets to eat. Adding yeast to food aids in flavor enhancement (PalaUp), which is especially useful for picky eaters or those with reduced appetite. For example, by optimizing sugar and specific amino acid consumption and utilization, they can ensure that an appropriate amount of sugars is available for the Maillard reaction, resulting in the development of desirable flavor compounds or the presence of nucleotides, that enhance flavor by contributing to the umami taste, synergistically interacting with other taste compounds, stimulating taste receptors, and reducing the need for excessive

salt or fat. To apply yeast extract, it can consider including it in the formula directly in the dough or as a coating, along with the palatant, in various pet food formats ranging from dry extruded diets to nutraceutical compounds. Fiber and intestinal health: Yeast contains soluble and insoluble fibers, which are beneficial for the intestinal health of pets. Fiber assists in regulating intestinal transit, promotes colon health, and helps form healthy stools. Mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) are derived from the cell walls of yeast that support gut health in pets by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and improving digestive function. Moreover, the fiber present in yeast can act as a prebiotic (ActiveMOS and HyperGen), stimulating the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut and promoting a balanced gut microbiota. It is important to mention that MOS and beta-glucan are both carbohydrates with distinct structures and functions. MOS primarily supports gut health and digestion by promoting beneficial gut bacteria, while beta-glucan focuses on immune modulation and enhancing immune responses. Their applications in pet food and supplements differ based on their specific benefits and mechanisms of action. Immune support: Yeast contains bioactive compounds like β-glucans, which have immunomodulatory properties (Macrogard). These compounds can help strengthen the immune system of pets, making them more resistant to infections and diseases. Including β-glucans in pet food provide immune support, modulates inflammation, manages allergies and atopy, promotes gastrointestinal health, potentially in cancer management, benefits cardiovascular health, and may support cognitive function in aging pets. Macrogard, from Biorigin, is recognized worldwide and

has extensive scientific evidence of its effectiveness. The biotechnology applied to Macrogard gives it a high content of bioactive beta-glucans, and the maintenance of the original structure of this molecule has recently been proven to have an additional function for dogs. In a recent study, Ferreira et al. (2022) demonstrated the beneficial effect of Macrogard in overweight dogs with insulin resistance. The beta-glucan can be applied in some ways, including as a supplement for immune support, in functional treats or chews for dental health and immune enhancement, in topical products for skin and coat health, in specialised diets for allergy management, and in formulations for specific health conditions such as joint health or gastrointestinal support.

Not all yeasts!

It is important to note that not all yeasts used in pet foods are the same. Some specific forms of yeast, such as brewer’s yeast or inactivated Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast, are more commonly used due to their nutritional properties and health benefits. The application of biotechnology in yeast production for pet food offers numerous benefits. It allows for the customisation of food, improves nutritional quality, enhances digestibility, promotes the production of functional compounds, and provides sustainable and alternative ingredients. By harnessing the power of biotechnology, we can create healthier, more tailored, and sustainable pet food options that support the well-being of our beloved animal companions. With ongoing advancements in biotechnology, the future holds exciting possibilities for further innovation in pet food production, ensuring that our pets receive the best nutrition for a happy and healthy life.

Petfood Conveyor Launch

R

Starting Up On Time With Confidence by Del Williams, Technical Writer on behalf of Cablevey Conveyers, USA

elying on an expert original expert manufacturer (OEM) for tubular drag cable conveyor-supervised installation and commissioning can eliminate costly mistakes and optimise performance. To move delicate petfood products or powders, most processors do extensive homework before purchasing a tubular drag cable conveyor to ensure that it meets their needs in terms of function and price. After the purchase, the conveyor must be expertly assembled and tested to ensure smooth production startup and continued performance. The challenge is that the typical third-party contractors installing various plant systems might need to become more familiar with specialised petfood conveyors and, thus, are more prone to make costly errors. A more prudent choice is using the OEM’s team of experienced technicians. The OEM’s experts have the advantage of designing the specialised conveyor and understanding its installation, operational requirements, and potential problem areas. “If a tubular drag cable conveyor is installed incorrectly by a third party, it often needs to be completely pulled apart and rebuilt, which is costly and time-consuming. If the conveyor is run incorrectly, damage will occur, and components must be replaced. All these only delays startup,” says Terry Derby, Director of Parts and Field Service for Automated Handling Solutions (AHS). AHS is the service-focused subsidiary of Cablevey Conveyors, an Oskaloosa, Iowa-based conveyor manufacturer that has been designing, engineering, and servicing enclosed cable and disc tube conveyors for 50 years and is in more than 65 countries.

The need for supervised Installation

As a solution, petfood processors seeking superior conveyor performance from the start rely on expert-supervised installation and commissioning to ensure they will be ready to run products on time, at the necessary volumes. Today, a tubular drag cable conveyor requires considerable expertise to install. These systems gently move material through a sealed tube using a coated, flexible, stainless-steel drag cable pulled through on a loop. Solid circular discs (flights) attach to the cable, pushing the product through the tube without air. “This type of conveyor is uniquely engineered to transport delicate materials gently. The tubes form a continuous loop that must be carefully assembled for a tight fit to ensure no misalignment or gaps between sections. While the modular components lend great flexibility to system design, each component must act in concert with the rest for proper conveyor functionality,” explains Derby. After selecting and purchasing a conveyor, the petfood processor’s next step is installing it, which often requires professional assistance. Whether relying on internal staff members for installation or contracting the job to an outside team of millwrights or skilled pipefitters, supervised conveyor installation can ensure proper system installation Getting expert assistance is still essential during installation, even with the manual that has detailed instructions and QR-code links to videos for each conveyor component. “Supervised installation is important to ensure that your system is installed properly so you don’t run into maintenance problems due to an improper install,” says Derby. Derby insists that “supervised installs are probably the most important support service we offer.” This step is often neglected

20 | December 2023 - International Petfood

F

when a less experienced third party performs the installation, which can escalate costs. At this point, AHS is frequently asked to complete final preparations and correct any problems before production startup, a process known as commissioning. “When a processor brings us to their facility after declining a supervised installation, we often have to work backward for a day or two to correct issues. Having us there for supervised installation eliminates the need for correction and any idle contractors waiting on us for the repair, so it pays for itself,” says Derby.

Knowledge and expertise

In the case of AHS, the company’s technicians have logged hundreds, if not thousands, of hours on-site in various manufacturing facilities worldwide. This singular focus gives them the knowledge and expertise to streamline the installation process and prevent issues that can lead to system inefficiencies, product loss, or complete system failure. As part of the supervised installation, skilled technicians ensure the correct positioning of the conveyor’s hangers and the proper torque for couplings. The system is properly cleaned to remove any metal fragments or foreign contaminants introduced during installation. In addition, the technician confirms that all conveyor inlets are in place and that all discharges are functioning. Even seemingly minor gaps or misaligned areas in the conveyor tubing can become a severe issue. “If gaps are in the conveyor’s tubes, the discs will ‘catch’ when crossing the joint, causing excessive wear on the cable and motor. If not corrected, this could lead to premature failure, production downtime, and added repair and replacement costs,” says Derby.

Cablevey Conveyors Support Disk Installation For Online

According to Derby, another common wear item in tubular drag cable conveyors is sweeps, areas where the tube changes direction. He explains that sweeps are where the cable is under the most significant tension and where the discs rub inside the tube. Since sweeps show the first signs of wear, proper installation can reduce the wear and significantly prolong tube and cable life, simplifying maintenance. “With a supervised install, processors can ensure that their conveyor is assembled correctly to enable seamless startup, reliable production, optimal output, and greater longevity for the system and its parts. Our reputation is on the line to get it right from the start,” says Derby.

In addition, a supervised installation includes a full report outlining actions to correct any issues found. Due to the attention to detail, a supervised installation also preserves the standard warranty for the system’s components. Of course, operators also play a critical role in conveyor performance. For this reason, having experts onsite can be one of the best ways to train the operators and maintenance crew on properly running, cleaning, and maintaining the system.

Reliable Production Requires Expert Commissioning

When the installation is complete, the next step is to schedule commissioning. The average commissioning visit for a singlesystem installation usually lasts an entire day. The onsite commissioning process readies the conveyor for total production and identifies any immediately correctable issues to keep the startup on schedule. At this point, the system must be installed entirely, including all mechanical and electrical components. The conveyor material must also be ready for introduction to the system. This is where a botched installation by a third party can come to light without supervised installation by the OEM. “ We are often asked to ‘fix’ poor installations by third-party contractors. We have had to tear whole systems apart. This frequently requires a complete rebuild and replacement of damaged parts, which adds cost, creates downtime, and delays startup,” says Derby. In the case of AHS’s commissioning service, the technician conducts an inspection using a camera that runs through the entire system layout to ensure that everything is correctly assembled

and ready for testing. The technician then performs a test run of the product, from the inlet feed through the sweeps to the discharge outlet and verifies that it flows at the desired speed. “Tailoring the conveyor to the material conveyed can require adjustments to fine-tune the process. With the commissioning, the goal is to increase efficiency, production volume, and reliability,” says Derby. He adds that “checking the system’s health” also uncovers any issues that might arise, which technicians can address to prevent production downtime. He points out that commissioning also extends Cablevey’s standard warranty. As a final step in the commissioning process, the technician issues a report for the processor that documents all findings from the full-system inspection. Completing conveyor installation, commissioning, and start-up is only the start of the OEM’s and processor’s relationship since the system’s lifespan can be decades. In addition to traveling on-site for emergency service calls, the company offers an annual service visit to conduct a detailed system inspection and address any issues, identify worn parts, ensure predictive maintenance is being conducted, and provide any additional training needed. This complete system audit aims to extend the conveyor’s lifespan and prevent unexpected downtime. “Our mission is to provide conveying equipment and ensure it performs as required, with minimal downtime and maintenance. Once a petfood processor buys a system, they become part of our family. We will continue to support them every way we can, even as their needs evolve,” concludes Derby.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Troubleshooting Extrusion cooking being the dominant method to produce petfood, what are the topics of consideration to select a design to use? Basing this discussion on the four basic areas of extrusion, formula, product specifications, process or equipment selected and operation of the system. The formula, formulas or the possible ingredients, their range of use and possible combinations need to be defined. The nutritionist has a big impact in this area as this defines the style or range of styles of products to be produced. Product specifications would be to take the stated formulas or range of formulas and extrude them into selected shapes based on density, texture colour, evenness and many others. The process designed or agreed to make a collection of products defined. Can’t mention all of the discussions that are had to do this but the “formula or formulas” and predictions of a product mix and a bit of guessing the bin designs and their sizing for all of the different ingredients is just the start. Getting the ingredients prepared and measured and delivered to the desired location when needed is quite a feat but with computers are quite manageable. Grinding of the dry ingredients is important as this can greatly change the look of the final product with finer grinding is generally accepted as making a better-looking product. Everything comes together practically at the extruder. Its selection should be based on all of the above discussed and defined formulas, is the range narrow or wide, simple to the most complex products? Capacity? If the range is wide, then a very flexible extruder is needed, perhaps more than one taking the advantages of different extruder styles for what they are designed to produce. Large capacity single screw extruders are designed for simple products as well as for premium and super premium where some meat and fat are added. The products sold in large volume bags usually have large extruders in the system. All of these specifications of what you desire on your shipping docks needs to be discussed and noted as to what the production machines should be able to do. Downstream drying, cooling, atmospheric fat coating or vacuum coating grading storage and packaging are the base processes. All need to be designed for the upstream possible capacities and needs. Cooling for example, has a big effect in storage, need to be completely cooled so no sweating occurs in the closed bags. Many suppliers have facilities where demonstrations and tests can be conducted for the confirmation of what is expected and for also pushing the envelope. Communication is what makes the difference, if a question is asked you might ask why? You will most likely get a good answer and see just how detailed this process can be.

Previously on Troubleshooting... 1. Density

An examination of product density and its relationship with moisture levels, heating, cooling feeder screw rate and automation.

2. Non-uniform and rough appearance

A guide to understanding the science involved in improving the art of making products of all the same size.

3. Extrusion dies

This article takes a look at aspects of the process including high, medium and low shear as well the adjustments required when producing feed for small mammals.

4. Dryers

The dryer is without a doubt one of the machines in the system which greatly impacts the bottom line.

5. The extruder barrel - Part 1

Forming extruders are used for some select products – thus this part of the discussion centres on single and twin designs.

6. Cook in the extruder barrel – part 2

As discussed last month, the extruder barrel has a number of functions, but the main goal is to finalise the cook, yield the desired shape with the density target.

7. Coating

The coating process has a few areas of importance, with this edition of ‘Troubleshooting’ exploring the most important of these.

8. Expanded cat food

Dry expanded cat food production is similar to dog food production, but there are some differences, with this edition exploring a choice selection of these.

9. Extrusion during operation

This month we discuss steam input into the conditioner. During the water addition process, the steam is usually in the two-bar range.

Ekomex KBM-1000 Frozen Block Pallet Crusher by Windsor Highly industrial machine for crushing frozen blocks stacked in pile on euro palette size.

Leiber YeaFi® – Brewers’ yeast bound to functional f ibres! | dietetic and prebiotic active ingredients | supports digestion | promotes skin and coat quality | technological advantages Available with different fibre carriers like spent grain, DDGS or apple pomace.

The construction of the machine and the cutting chamber enables loading of up to 40 blocks simultaneously with a total weight of up to 800 kg. The machine is intended in particular for large meat, pet fod and fish plants, for grinding frozen blocks of meat, fish, cheese, vegetables or other food products with standarized dimensions. The best performances can be achieved with a product temperature in the range of -15 to -20 °C. Crushing is carried out by means of two slow-rotating, very durable tooth rollers, into the zone of which the blocks fall gravitally after being lifted by means of column loading. Then, through the appropriate construction of the head and counter teeth, the product is pulled in and broken into a structure similar to the width of the teeth in the range from 35 to 70mm. After grinding, smaller pieces of the frozen raw material fall into a buffer, a big-box container or a conveyor for transfer to further, final grinding, mostly on grinders, cutters or further processing on mixers and production lines.

FOCUS Touchswitch by 4B Group

PEGASUS® 5-IN-1 MIXER by Dinnissen

The Touchswitch is an electro-mechanical limit switch with no moving parts, which detects tracking and misalignment problems on bucket elevators and conveyors. When a belt misaligns or a pulley moves over and contacts the sensor, the built in solid-state electronic circuitry detects the lateral force of the belt or pulley and activates a voltage free solid state relay output. This output signal is used to immediately alarm and ultimately shutdown the machine.

The Pegasus® 5-in-1 Mixer is a true multiprocessing machine. It allows you to mix, vacuum coat, dry, germinate and acidify your product. The mixer produces flavored products with a high hygiene requirement and a fresh-sour taste sensation, such as tea, cereals, (crispy) sweets, and snacks. In sectors such as the food industry, there is an increasing need for multiprocessing machines. Production must become ever faster and more efficient, to produce the best possible product using the least number of materials and resources possible.

The face of the sensor is made from hardened and annealed stainless steel, not soft brass or aluminium, so wear life is longer when a belt contacts it. The Touchswitch is not affected by dust or material build up and will still work when completely covered by material. An external test wheel allows for quick and simple sensor/system testing. The sensors are usually installed in pairs on opposite sides of the machine.

www.go4b.co.uk

by combining several process steps in one machine, the Pegasus® 5-in-1 mixer saves on both cost and energy. The dual axis mixing mechanism airily tosses powders, pellets and granules during mixing. Then the finely atomized liquid particles mix homogeneously with the dry raw materials. The 5-in-1 mixer can also dry, germinate and acidify the product. No transport is needed between the different process steps, saving time and manpower.

the interview Glycon Santos CEO, ICC, Brazil

Glycon Santos was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. He has Bachelors degree in Engineering from Mackenzie University, and a Bachelors in Business from the University of São Paulo. Glycon founded ICC in 1992 growing it to become one of the world leaders in the production of yeast additives, with exports to more than 70 countries. His legacy is the transformation of the surplus yeast generated during the sugar cane ethanol fermentation which used to be discarded by ethanol mills, into a trustworthy and competitive source of yeast additive.

What are the unique and innovative natural solutions for animal nutrition ICC offers and why?

ICC is a Brazilian company, we celebrated 30 years last year, and we are specialised in the production of yeast additives coming from the sugar cane ethanol fermentation. We can claim that our legacy was to transform a waste product that was dried as a protein source, in feed additive recognized by its superior quality against other yeast sources, including brewer’s yeast and baker’s yeast. And what our company did is that we tried to understand the product, we try to benchmark it against the primary grown yeast or baker’s yeast, and also against the brewer’s yeast that were mainstream at that time, and we discovered that as our during the ethanol fermentation, the live yeast is challenged by very acid pH and high ethanol levels it grows a much thicker cell wall, which is highly concentrated in betaglucans and MOS. The flip side is that the ethanol yeast will not concentrate so much protein, but that is ok, because it offers what the industry is looking for - the functional carbohydrates. So, beta-glucans are recognized to be very important for immune modulation, we have several trials showing how yeast beta-glucans can help on to modulate the immune system. In addition, beta glucans can also help to mitigate mycotoxin challenges, and MOS, when combined with the beta-glucans, act binding pathogens, such as E. coli or Salmonella, and building a much healthier intestinal tract.

For what main purposes you use yeast-based nutrition products for?

What we can say about our yeast is that this is not a one play product. If your concern is immune modulation, pathogen binding, mycotoxin mitigation, yeast is the way to go. And I want to be clear that yeast is not a silver bullet. Yeast can be used alone for sure and it will definitely bring reliable and consistent results. But ICC advocates that the yeast additives will have an even better performance when used in combination with essential oils, with acidifiers, etc. A joke that I always tell is that the problem with ICC yeast additives is that “our products do not kill anybody”. Our yeast additives carry pathogens out, our yeast additives modulate the

immune system, they will not kill directly the pathogens but train the immune system to fight by itself. So, if you use ICC’s yeast additives in combination with essential oils, acidifiers, etc., there will be a strong synergistic effect, combining the best of both worlds. Because when acidifiers reduce the Ecoli and Salmonella challenge, it’s going to be much easier for the yeast additives to work. And vice versa.

So, this is really all about gut health?

Yes, it’s about gut health. And we know that when it comes to the immune system, 70 percent of the cells are in the gut. So, when we talk about the immunity, we are talking about gut health as well.

And is this widely understood outside Brazil? How are your international market development going?

Today ICC exports to 70 countries. Though several countries have a long tradition using yeast additives on their feeds, the yeast additives have been studied more and more during the last 30 years. There are several aspects of yeast that are connected to gut health, immune modulation, mycotoxin mitigation, and much more is to come.

Are many companies out there extracting the yeast from sugar, or is Brazil almost unique in this regard?

Brazil is almost unique in this regard, because also Brazil is the world’s largest producer of ethanol from sugarcane. We expect more countries coming into this arena. We also have the corn ethanol fermentation, that is huge in the United States and that is growing fast in Brazil and in other countries. The challenge with corn ethanol fermentation is that the corn is grinded in order to be fermented and in this case the yeast will come together with the DDGs. There are some companies that are extracting yeast with different industrial processes, but still, the cell count is not there. If you compare yeast derived from corn ethanol of United States, the cell count per gram is going to be at best 1/3 of sugar cane ethanol yeast, the brewer’s yeast, or baker’s yeast. So, the yeast produced from the corn ethanol is a very different product, more suitable to be used a nutrition source.
