Akihiro Shiroza
Chemically and digitally enhanced aquacultured Thunnus albacares (yellowfin tuna) from The Glorification of the Dead series Photographer: Akihiro Shiroza My most recent work as an artist stems from interacting, on a quotidian basis, with dead specimens and reflecting on my role as a larval fish collector and taxonomist. Using scientifically collected larval specimens, I glorify the fish through embalming rituals of cleaning, chemical treatment, and digital transformation.
APC003 Category: open
The finished pieces are digital retouched collages of multiple super-macro photographs of chemically treated larval fish, some magnified up to 200 times to the size of their mature bodies. I conceived the concept and images after sorting and identifying larval fish all day, every day, under the microscope. Prior to identification, and while using needles and forceps, I take my time to clean the specimens, and free them from dust and other foreign objects attached to their surface, as an act of respect to the deceased before their last judgment in the Big Book of Records. It’s only then, when I ask what they are, that they finally speak to me.
Bio: Born in Tokyo, Japan. Akihiro Shiroza is a marine biologist working in the field of zooplankton ecology and early life history of fish. His primary media are preserved zooplankton specimens from the lab presented in photograph or video format. As such, contrasting themes such as life and death are underlined in chaotic yet sterile aesthetics in most of his works.

Created, nurtured, grown and ready to be eaten Photographer: Helen Jenkins I took this photo in 2011 - it was a joint collaboration I orchestrated between Australian farmed and Australian wild catch prawns with both sectors contributing 60kg of peeled prawns for this giant cocktail which was consumed at the Welcome Reception of Seafood Directions 2011 at the Gold Coast. Once the cocktail was prepared the chef grabbed the cocktail and had this huge happy smile on his face as if he was about to consume the whole lot!
