About This Sample Document In this sample, you will find one activity from each of the IPC’s Core Content Learning Areas: Language Arts, Socio-Emotional, Numeracy, Creative Arts, Science and Motor Skills. This sample was designed to provide an overview of the IPC Infant and Toddler Curriculum, therefore, this is not an entire unit. Each thematic unit is structured into daily lessons which are spread over the course of five days, or one week. We sincerely hope that you like what you see and see the value in all of the benefits and services that we provide. If you have any questions, comments and/or feedback we would love to hear from you. Activity 1.1 Animals Match
IPC SAMPLE DOCUMENT
Day 1
Rationale An art activity improves motor skills and enhances toddler’s productivity. Materials File folder, three to four pictures of different household pets (2 each), clear contact paper, one black marker, one sandwich bag, and scissors
Visual and Creative Arts
Directions Label the tab of your file folder with the black marker “Animal Match.” Cut out each animal picture, and then place one of each animal onto the inside of the file folder fixing it in place with the contact paper. Then cover the remaining animals with contact paper to assist with the life span of the folder game. Place in an area where the children can have freedom to explore the folder game with a small amount of supervision to prevent tearing. Use the sandwich bag to store the remaining animals. Be sure not to leave the sandwich bag in a place where the children can reach. Use this with older infants and toddlers.
Activity 1.2 Animal Hunt
Rationale This game can bring to life the joy of pets and animals around us. That joy can later turn into a love for animals.
Physical Development and Motor Skills
Materials Clear contact paper and photos of likely household pets
Directions Hang each pet photo child level near different areas where the children play using clear contact paper to cover each photo. Then sing, “Oh, where oh where can Mr. Kitty be, oh where oh where can he be?” while you walk around the classroom hunting for a cat photo then repeat the song for each pet, subbing in the name of each pet where you sing “kitty.”

Activity 1.3 Bird Cage
Rationale This will help the children understand some of the tools needed to take care of birds as pets.
Language Arts
Materials Construction paper of various colors, cut out photos of birds, scissors and tape
Directions Choose one corner of the classroom and clear off the walls. Tape bird photos onto the wall at child level, then cut the construction paper into pieces that resemble a bird cage large enough to hang in the corner, using the corner to design the circular look of the cage. Be creative with your bird cage, perhaps creating a swing for the birds to sit on. Then cover the cage with contact paper to prevent premature tearing so the children can touch it.
Activity 1.4 Puppet Fun Music and Movement
Rationale By experiencing the communication methods of pets, children can begin to understand that pets can “talk.” Materials One pet puppet per child, either manufactured or handmade
Directions Make sure each child has their own puppet to use as well as the teacher. The teacher then places all the puppets on the carpet, with hers on her hand, and sitting on the carpet next to the children’s puppets. The teacher should then “pretend” to have her puppet sing (making sounds like the pet your puppet resembles) any of the children’s songs the children are familiar with. As the children come to see what the teacher is doing, the children can help them selves to a puppet each and begin to communicate through the puppet.

Activity 2.1 Sort The Furry Animals
IPC SAMPLE DOCUMENT
Day 2
Rationale Sorting is a beginning math skill that if taught at an early age can help develop stronger math skills later.
Science
Materials Materials of similar color with various textures cut into shapes of animals, card board and glue Directions Glue the animal shapes onto the card board and cut the card board into the same animal shape so that the animal shape has a card board back that matches. During a small group time have each child feel the different textures and learn how to vocally describe each texture, grouping together the animal shapes that are the same.
Activity 2.2 Tea Party Set up
Physical Development and Motor Skills
Rationale Learning how to set a table for more than one person helps develop one to one correspondence skills, a first step to learning math; and teaches the children to use their motor skills to balance while they pass out the table supplies, and mixing fluid and powders together to create a beverage can assist in learning beginner science skills.
Materials Child size cups, napkins, spoons and cup saucers, a small table with chairs, stuffed animals sitting in a few of the chairs with enough chairs for at least one child to sit in Directions Position the table and chairs in a place the children will have freedom to move around the table to set it. Set one place, and then place the remainder of table supplies in the middle of the table, while putting the stuffed animals in the chairs. Remove yourself from the area and let the children explore without assistance unless they ask for help.

Activity 2.3 Prop-Box
Pretend play can help children discover communication patterns and social skills needed in life.
Language Arts
Materials A prop box that contains material a veterinarian would use on her job; like a stethoscope, a doctors coat, etc. Directions Place the prop box into an area the children are free to play in so they are left to discover the box themselves to use the material.
Activity 2.4 Fly Blue Bird Fly Music and Movement
Rationale Music used to experience a blue bird can help the children to develop a curiosity about birds. Materials Only the children are needed for this activity.
Directions While around the room in a line while flapping your wings sing the words, “Little blue bird out my window, fly blue bird fly, fly blue bird fly”
Activity 2.5 Math with Cats Rationale Seriation is one of the first steps to learning math skills Materials One bucket full of plastic miniature cats of different sizes.
Numeracy
Directions Encourage the children up the cats by size, largest to smallest.
