The “Simpsons” with Sea Shepherd The creator of the acclaimed cartoon starring the Simpsons – Sam Simon – made a substantial donation for the purchase of the vessel SSS Sam Simon (namedso in his honor) which is now part of the fleet of the Sea Shepherd association, environmentalist group that fights against Japanese whalers. The craft (formerly Seifu Maru) is 56 meters long, it was built in 1993 and was a secret base for Maizuru meteorological observation in Antarctic waters; currently it hosts on board 24 international volunteers ready to navigate the Southern Ocean waters to find the whalers.
Cert A national task force will be formed for intervention on extraordinary cetacean stranding (Cetacean stranding emergency response team). Bocche di Bonifacio The International Marine Park is developing in this area, thanks to the territorial cooperation agreement signed by Italy, Corsica and France. Giuseppe Bonanno, president at the Park of La Maddalena, one of the signatories, said that "the company will help strengthen exchanges and propose shared solutions and suitable for an area that
has common characteristics, at the service of environmental protection and in the interest of the people living there." Priority goal of the European Group will be to promote projects aimed at enhancing and improving maritime safety within the Strait and there is even ambition to designate Bocche di Bonifacio as a world heritage site protected by Unesco.
Ecologic River Po Within Life Natura program the European Union will cofund the initiative to restore river continuity between subalpine lakes, River Po and the sea in order to facilitate the passage and reproduction of fish, particularly of sturgeon cobice. The river corridor starts from Lugano and reaches the Atlantic Ocean connecting 33 areas, part of "natura 2000 network". The project budget is 7 million Euros (3.4 million co-financed by EU), the works will go on for five years and will involve the regions of Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto.
Energy from the oceans Two students of the Technical University of Madrid have won the Eurec Awards 2012 because they have been able to obtain energy exploiting ocean thermal gradient, i.e.
the temperature difference between the ocean bottom and its surface. The project involves a system to be placed 10 miles from the coast and could be especially useful for small tourist islands.
Missions at South Pole
Lakes and rivers failed Eu agency stated that 63% of European inland waters are in an unfavorable conservation status due, firstly, to pollution. It is estimated that in 2015 not even half of lakes, rivers, streams and groundwaters will be in good condition. Nitrates are the number one enemy that comes from agricultural fertilizers while pollution by phosphates and ammonia is reducing faster. Besides, waste, drought, floods and forecasts indicate that the situation will be worse in the future because of climate change. Finally, not to forget the problems resulting from artificial modifications such as dams which can change the habitat of plants and animals.

It's called Ellsworth and it’s a Lake (in Antarctica) located under two kilometers of ice. There is no light down there from hundreds of thousands of years and researchers of the British Antarctic survey are trying to find out whether there are any traces of primordial life, because in such conditions it is possible to find some bacteria. Scientists are working at 90 °C with a water drill down to the bottom of the lake to take a sample from a three meters cylinder of sediments for analysis. However it isn't the only expedition taking place in this period. A group of researchers from the United States, in fact, will reach Lake Whillans southwest of Antarctica.

Designed for a customer who already owned a Trinity, in collaboration with the interior designer Ramon Alonso and JC Espinosa of Espinosa Loguer Design, Inc., Tsumat (which means princess or beautiful woman in the Mexican dialect) shows Latin and European stylistic influences in the use of materials and architectural elements. Great attention has been given to details and hand-made items: granites, onyx slabs, marble blocks. Thanks to its shallow draft, only 2.4 meters, it allows an easy navigation in the Caribbean waters. Nautical market
Income-meter The president Anton Francesco Albertoni has explained the mode of operation of the new income-test and incomemeter: «Both instruments represent a real cultural change for the taxpayer in general and for the sailing sector in particular». The important change of the new income-meter is the fact that the purchase price of the boat, from now on, will have the same value of the spending for a property, without any difference whatsoever between real properties of equal value. The cost of the lease installment will be included among the other fixed expenses, like the rent of a property, and will also be treated in the same way. Rules for the benefit of the supply chain Ucina was able to obtain an extension to 2020 for maritime and waterway structures state concessions for “marinas, docks and moorings dedicated to recreational boating”, including those sport ones of sailing clubs. An electronic registry for registered sport boats has also been established to eliminate the possibility of fraud and to make multiple inspections by the institutions unnecessary. The two rules are contained in the final text of the just approved Stability Law.
According to the consultancy company, Interconnection Consulting, the marine market of over 80 feet vessels (7,086 billion euro) is still far from recovering pre-crisis figures. Especially the people of Changchun (China) who, in order to toughen their physic and mind, take a bath in the cold waters of South Lake Park at -20 °C. Is it the strangeness of young people daring? No! It’s a group of 900 people, mostly middle-aged, that also this year have gathered at Nanhu Park for their usual swim.
Captain Nelson,are you fine?
This could be the question that some crew member asked him seeing the great British admiral particularly pale. In fact, in a letter dated October 1804 (only a year before the famous battle of Trafalgar), written by Nelson for his wife, he admits to suffer from seasickness and to succeed in overcoming the problem only thanks to enthusiasm for his profession. A small weakness for a great hero of the seas.

History
The power of ideas
Research, experimentation, perseverance and determination in study, together with patience and precision in filing the trailing edge of a small boat propeller always give fulfilling results by Franco Harrauer
Sarnico, lake Iseo, January 1973. It was almost 9:30 pm, the shipyard was closed for the night and only the small Rio workshop was open for us: engineer Scarani, an attendant at the port of call, Renato Levi and the undersigned. It was very cold. Renato and I, with a cutter and a triangular file, were trying to give a corner on the trailing edge of a semisubmerged propeller, which we were assembling and disassembling for the third time on a small Rio 500. It was no longer the classic “cup” but a kind of “sharp tooth” which
Scarani, wrapped in an enormous scarf, watched dubiously while the half-frozen worker swore softly in Bergamo dialect. At the third attempt the small hull finally jumped surfing and disappeared very fast in the darkness of the lake. The researchers at the Institute of Hydrodynamics of Petersburg University have supposed and experienced that if a water flow, within the boundary layer, is violently deviated by a normal and vertical barrier to the flow itself, it generates a vertical thrust, with equal resistance,
greater than that generated by a normal flap or thrust wedge. So it is easy to think that you get a better result by ordering and forcing the water to a seemingly negative movement rather than inviting it gently to face depression of a flap’s inclined plane. This consideration must have persuaded Levi (in that polar night) to create on the trailing edge of the propeller’s blade (which we can compare to a transom of a planing hull) a "rolling shutter" definitely vertical instead of a traditional cup.
The dinner we had that night with Scarani, after the happy takeoff of the small 500, strengthened our conviction that the gentle alcoholic Franciacorta wine should share common origins with the “water” study element that all Russians and hydrodynamists of St. Petersburg call Vodka. For many years I have been living and working in Brazil, a country that potentially offers huge development opportunities to new ideas. My friend Gianni Patrone, who with his Lame Marine has developed engines with
Sea Rider surface propellers, has reached me here to propose these groups on crew boat Arpoador catamarans, which I designed. 24 meters long, they have displacement hulls with 20 knots operating speed, next to the index of critical speed R = 5, 5 in which partially submerged propellers may have problems that could persuade the ship owners to begin consulting their lawyers! The Lame Marine had already patented, under the name of Interceptor, the magic "rolling shutter" that replaced the flaps and it had extended the patent also on the surface propellers that necessary equipped my catamarans. The result that pushed away the specter of lawyers was a speed increase of over 12 knots against the ones on the specifications, with maximum up to 27 knots. I therefore believe that an idea that has solid roots should be pursued and explored at any cost, between skepticism and total indifference and – remembering that "polar" night on lake Iseo – even at temperatures that would dampen any enthusiasm.

T
he following pages depict important men for yachting: they
are the Italian minds that through art, education, skills and passion for their work draw and design the boats that make our country unique and appreciated in the world. They are engineers, architects, designers who have created – and we are sure they will continue creating – the most requested, loved, sold boats. They are professionals requested also by international shipyards, those from which the next generation of emerging markets will learn. We know that industry is in crisis, production has drastically decreased and in the last year our country’s sales have halved (almost all Italian boats are sold abroad). But we also know that Italy is a world leader in the production of superyachts over 24 meters. Andrea Frabetti, Engineer supervisor at Ferretti Group, strongly states: the “boating made in Italy” is the world's leading production system. Today our competence is higher than the one we had in the 80’s; we are in the forefront as for materials technology, design of hull forms, propulsion systems, monitoring and plant design. Credit goes to investments, which have grown in parallel to shipbuilding. We win many international prizes for technological innovations and on foreign boats most of the components are made in Italy”. Design, style, good taste and creativity are characteristics that international markets traditionally give recognition to Italian enterprises. For this reason, if we cannot ignore the crisis, we should share the appreciation of our "brand"of factoty, and give value to those who have the tools to do so. Engineer and architect Sergio Cutolo invites us to re think about «the expression of Italian genius during the Renaissance, a period of strong political weakness when our nation wasn’t formed yet and in which the whole artistic creativity and ability excelled in Europe and throughout the world. In this complex beginning phase of the 21st century we can say something similar: nautical industry, along with the other areas that represent the great creativity of Italian style, can help with examples of excellence, technical and entrepreneurial skills in being modern engine of economic recovery and the typical Italian capacity to think about beauty and build it well may be the flywheel to revive economy». Therefore let’s welcome the appeal of architect Vittorio Garroni who is inviting our magazine to start an awareness campaign to promote design as «a practical resource for an overly illtreated Italy». Garroni, a professional who has worked abroad all his life in countries like China and Japan, America and France, firmly thinks that «Italian style is the winning weapon to overcome the crisis. Design and style (which may almost be confused with each other), as well 34
BARCHE February 2013
as cultural heritage and environment, are the great and insuperable resources of Italy. Brands like Ferrari, Maserati, Gucci, Valentino, Ferragamo, high handicrafts, furniture, jewelry and fashion or the unbeatable Italian shipbuilding are an unparalleled and unsurpassed heritage, but also unique». Brunello Acampora, engineer and owner of Victory Design, blames “below-cost sales" that many designers apply to their products and makes a heartfelt appeal: «we need to come together, to work together for shared goals, we need to become aware of our value without selling it off at "the stand of globalization" at all costs, copying one another. We must recover culture, knowledge, poetry and banish ignorance that is suppressing us with miserable, sterile and sad models, dreams, projects». Designer Marino Alfani adds that «“made in Italy” has become an international recognition, synonym with quality and beauty». Venetian architect Cristiano Gatto asserts that made in Italy is a state of the art: «To export what I know and what I am learning from Italian master craftsmen is my job». For Francesco Paszkowski, Florentine architect, «Italian brand has a great strength, we have a culture that comes from centuries of history, Italian creativity is valued and recognized worldwide, even in boats. It is undeniable, but in our sector it would take greater copyright protection to defend the work of designers, or create an original idea that could turn a project into a unique and innovative expression». This same line of defense and protection of our industrial products is supported by architect Fulvio De Simoni when he says that «nothing is done to protect Italian design: the crisis is enabling our style to be widespread, foreign shipyards are even adopting it more and more, competing with us through our own strong points». Filippo Salvetti and Marco Biaggi of Neo Design have the same opinion: «Today many Italian historical brands are “exported” in countries with greater buying power and there is a strong fear that made in Italy could be stolen, misrepresented or even destroyed». «But you have to believe in it – say partners Broglia, Carone and Sartori of Quartostile –, it’s the only way for made in Italy to become a safe access key for a design that will last over time». A voice against the tide is by Mauro Micheli of Officina Italiana Design: «When someone copies us, it’s very positive. And, indeed, if once the Chinese used to copy, now they just want authentic made in Italy». A strong ethical defense of nautical designers' work comes from architect Gianni Zuccon, who blames the typically Italian current and misguided vision that considers boat owners as possible evaders and, what is worse, that tends to confuse product users with who creates it: «I find unacceptable, says Zuccon – that 35 years of activity are humiliated just because for someone it is convenient to depict boating as a world of swindlers in demagogic way. Our work is made of research, economic investments and exploitation of ideas».

True yachting enthusiast, De Simoni has always fought homogenization. His nonconformist spirit, disinclined to compromise, is reflected in its projects. Intuition and creative leap that characterize the initial phase of the project are followed by a long work to harmonize all components that turn a draft into a finished project. That’s how stylish boats with overall balance and simple and well-defined lines are created.

Garroni Design The architect opened his own studio in Genoa in 1971, initially devoted to the restoration of the monumental buildings that have been the splendor of the city over the centuries. His passion for the sea led him to deepen his expertise in marine and naval matters and, during the transition from great liners to cruise ships, also the first significant orders arrive for him: from the reconversion of Galileo to the luxurious Crystal Cruises ships. Boating also accompanies him in his academic career, starting in 1971 as an interior design and architecture assistant, at the Faculty of architecture of Genoa. Once he became professor, at the end of the 80’s, the Minister for the Merchant Navy entrusted him to start a specific School of nautical design. After gaining the cooperation of the Naval Engineering Institute of Genoa and the Southampton Institute of yachts and small craft design (today Solent University), in 1990 he opens the School of nautical design of La Spezia (today nautical Engineering and naval and nautical design). In 2000, after graduating in architecture and a long training course at Jeanneau production lines, Camillo, son of Victor, enters the Garroni Design staff and today he is its design Director, at his father’s side. Mauro, who was trained as a pupil of the professor, is the chief design engineer and joins the others of the team including Alessandro and Francesco who coordinate the automotive and interior design, Giuse for sailing and commercial vehicles, while Giada is involved in technical design and coordinates communication. The means to create an environment where he can feel really comfortable is to know and understand his world. We never ask our customer to choose our style, but to choose our experience, creativity and flexibility to create his unique style», says Gatto. The ability to create and consistently follow a design is among the highlights of the studio which is pursuing every job following a defined process: from the beginning of the owner's dream until the com-

Hydro Tec Sergio Cutolo, a past as a designer in prestigious Italian and foreign shipyards, is today recognized as one of the most experienced Italian naval engineers. In 1995 he founded Hydro Tec, naval engineering company headquartered in Varazze, whose skills involve all possible fields of design, both for yachting crafts and light vessels in general. Hydro Tec is able to deal with all aspects relevant to the building of a ship: from hull to exterior design, from building supervision on behalf of the ship-owner to the development of mechanical parts with a common denominator: creativity. The company's philosophy, the result of Cutolo’s versatile experiences in the industry, can be summarized in the following definition “Creative Naval Architecture”. Creativity is indeed considered the necessary talent that enables the designer to adapt to the needs expressed by the client and to make the best choices in terms of materials and construction techniques, solving complex technical issues and leaving the yacht designer the widest possible scope. For Hydro Tec creativity is a feature that is acquired on the field, regardless of direct experience in the shipyards whose working mechanisms must be well known to the designer in order to predict and, with creativity and ingenuity, overcome the typical problems of a ship building. Creative Naval Architecture means the engineer’s ability to deal with the project without having a “pre-fixed” vision, but with flexible spirit that allows confronting truly with the needs of the client and, of course, to respect them.

Neo Design It’s a studio of nautical and product design, founded in 2009 by Filippo Salvetti and Marco Biaggi. As students of Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, they base their experience in the nautical sector in 2000, when entering Officina Italiana Design and under Micheli’s guidance, they cooperate for the vessel design of Riva shipyards, from Rivarama (2001) to Domino (2008). Then they approach the AzimutBenetti Group turning their
attention in particular to Atlantis brand, firstly working on 44 and 48 and then renewing the entire range (within 3 years) planning interiors and exteriors also for 34 – the last born – 38 and 58, the flagship. At the moment they continue collaborating with the Group for new projects. In 2012 they were contacted by Benetti Design Innovation and presented two mega-yachts (Discovery 50mt and Discovery 67mt) of which Azimut-Benetti holds exclusive rights for its realization.

Benetti Discovery 67mt Concept designed exclusively for Azimut-Benetti Group that combines style and formal synthesis with its sharp and harmonic lines. This traditional three-deck megayacht presents a very “sloping hardtop, which gives strength and sporty nature to the boat, with an indoor gymmassage area and an outdoor living-bar area bordering the sundeck-pool. Guests are housed in the lower deck in large cabins, each with a folding terrace overlooking the sea; the ship owner uses the bow area on the main deck with 180 degrees external view, private studio with folding terrace and private spa.

Officina Italiana Design Founded 19 years ago by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta it has its headquarters in a historical building of the 18th century in Bergamo, a famous art city. As a matter of fact art is the item that inspires all their activities: all Riva-branded boats of the last 20 years have their signature. «Our boats’ feature is to have clean lines with a touch of contemporary and classic design that never goes out of style.” 220 Aquariva products have been built, all strictly identical: one of the few modern boats that can be defined as an icon. The shipyard has 170 years of history and integrates tradition and modernity at the same time, a mix of fashion, luxury and elegance. Its boats express beauty as transversal value perceived identically throughout the world».

Francesco Paszkowski Design «To learn about materials, the shipyard and the job of the workers, to have the sense of detail, interpreting the times, observing and listening in order to understand the needs of the shipyard and the desires of the owner». Without ever losing sight of these principles, since 1990 Francesco Paszkowski Design studio has been creating exterior and interior projects for planing and displacement megayachts (in aluminum and fiberglass) for some of the most prestigious Italian and foreign shipbuilding and shipowners from different countries of the world, from South America to Russia. From the first 29mt yacht, designed in 1994 for an Austrian entrepreneur and built by Baglietto, followed two years after by a 35 meters for the same owner, made this time

In addition to the projects for Baglietto and Heesen, there are also an Explorer and SL 118 for Sanlorenzo, with which the studio has been collaborating since 2005, and a 60 meters for Crn. Six partners are involved with Francesco Paszkowski as well as external professionals, coordinated by Michele Lubrano, chief designer of the studio, while interiors and materials’ research are in charge of architect Margherita Casprini. Thanks to its boats’ success the studio has earned numerous international awards and praises.

Quartostile «A concrete reality that aims at offering the best possible quality through three basic principles: measure, proportion and harmony». This is how the three partners, Matteo Broglia, Franco Carone and Andrea Sartori, define the activities of Quartostile, the company they founded in 2004 in Turin, thanks to their shared passion for design. From their early projects in the field of industrial design, soon the studio has expanded its field of action to the nautical and automotive sector. Important works are due precisely to the nautical sector, where today they develop skills to manage projects from the blank sheet to complete design, both for serial production and custom architecture. The experience of well-established professionals and the vibrant creativity of young designers have helped make the company an important partner for many customers in the European naval and automotive world and in the Italian one in particular. «Our work focuses on the development of drawing until 3D realization, with particular attention to the model’s carrying out. It is important to create a product with high feasible potential» say the partners.

Victory Design Studio Brunello Acampora, from Naples, after an "apprenticeship" in England, studies Yacht and boat design at Southampton and works in the technical office of Cougar marine; in 1989 he founds in Turin Victory Design studio (since 2000 it is in Naples) which, at the beginning, deals almost exclusively with racing boats, Class 1 catamaran offshore and fast single hulls for races such as the Venice-Montecarlo. The studio grows over the years and has a structure with a multidisciplinary approach, designing racing boats, yachting crafts, mono and multi hulls in fiberglass, wood, aluminum and composite, propellers, rudders, hulls, propulsion systems, components and accessories. In 1999, as an offshoot of Victory Design, Acampora founds Flexitab which deals with design, production and sale of components for propulsion and high-tech naval control.

Zuccon International Project The studio of architecture and industrial design was started in 1972 by Gianni Zuccon and his wife Paola Galeazzi, both architects. In over 30 years they ‘ve designed nearly 100 boats for the most popular shipyards in the industry. Today at the headquarters in Rome they are able to design composite, steel or aluminum motor yachts, of all types, but many professionals of the studio also deal with various projects in the fields of industrial design, civil and naval architecture. The key to understand such great success is primarily in the ability of architects Zuccon to develop a cultural feeling with the shipyards they deal with, building a relationship founded on continuity and aiming constantly at representing the corporate identity and the ongoing evolution of the product. They have been among the first in boating, with their slogan «standard boat but customized», to rationalize in their projects the need to start a process of industrialization of the sector. Also their children Martina and Bernardo, both architects, work with the founders Gianni e Paola.
Teamwork The activity began in 1978 with Technema 65 by Posillipo shipyard, boat that brought great audience and critics’ success for Zuccon spouses. Since 1978 the studio has been growing significantly: in the 80’s it has collaborated with Cantiere Baglietto, in 1984 it became Zuccon International Project and since 1990 it has been working steadily and continuously with Ferretti Group, for which it currently deals with shipyards, Ferretti Yachts, Ferretti Custom Line, Bertram, Crn and Mochi Craft for Long Range. Teamwork with Apreamare continues even after the exit of the Neapolitan shipyard from the Group.

Ferretti Yachts flagship, the largest planing pleasure boat the company has ever built, has been awarded CE certification. Her innovative features include a multifunctional stern and the positioning of the master cabin on the main deck
Her external profile is sporty and sleek, thanks to a glazed surface along her sides that “cuts” the main deck from bow to stern. The lowered gunwale amidships lets more light in through the windows. The aft swimming platform has a movable section that can be used to launch and
haul the tender, the seabob, and other equipment stored in the garage. When the door is opened, the central element is lowered, “flooding” part of the garage so that the tender can slip into the smoothly water just by using a winch, with no need for davits.
The stern in this case is more than a traditional spot for stowing equipment and tenders, on the 690 it doubles as an outdoor recreation area for guests. The garage door is fitted with cushions so that when opened, it becomes a chaise-longue overlooking the sea. The exterior spaces have been enlarged: the flybridge is devoted to relaxation, featuring a Ushaped sofa and two tables, a bar area, sun deck, hot tub and hardtop. The cockpit, furnished with a C-shaped sofa and a dining table with wooden chairs for 8 people, is particularly roomy.

The Tender 31’s aluminum structure means the boat can be sturdy and hig-perform-

behind the bridge console. This, in turn, can be protected by a hardtop providing shade during the hottest hours. The stern platform provides comfortable access to the water. The bridge console was designed both ergonomically and with just as much attention to details as any other part of the boat, start-

here are some companies that connect the past to the future with
an invisible thread of continuity. There are stories that seem like fairy tales, but instead trace the actual roots of a vital part of Italian industry, epitomizing the quality and style that the rest of the world associates with Italianmade. There are companies like Cranchi that interweave trusted traditions with the most advanced technological innovations to achieve long-lasting success, far removed from fatuous, momentary fortunes. The great technological and innovative power of these boat builders is evident in how completely the company integrates automation into their production processes. Cranchi uses machines that come from all over the world, some of which were designed specifically for them: a revolutionary idea in the industry. The company has never ceased investing in its industrialization processes. Each step has been optimized, from the carpentry, using a very fast electronic pantograph, to the cutting room with two complete cutting lines; from the electrolytic steel polishing system, to the centralized resin distribution system; from the catalyzer to the electronic scale for controlling the amount of fiberglass. Cranchi boasts a special six-axis milling machine for fine details and building models. The use of robotic systems marks an important step forward. For the preassembly of subgroups for assembly lines, for example, we find machi-
nery for wrapping, for cutting and stapling, for the cutting and curvature of special aluminum profiles. These are just some of the tools available to the company. Even before starting the production process, Cranchi draws on the knowledge of designers, engineers and technicians working in their R&D department. It is here that a project comes to life, born from the synthesis of rationality and experience, using the most advanced computer systems. Passion flanked by high standards - often surpassing regulatory norms - meeting the needs of a global market, with ever faster production, reduced costs and increased quality.
One fundamental element particularly responsible for the company’s continuous rise has been the Cranchi family’s unwavering dedication to reinvesting their profits for forward-planning developments, in terms of improving both the working environment and the products. Cranchi
History The story begins before the company was even registered in 1870. It was, in fact, in 1866 that Giovanni Cranchi opened his first shop on the shores of Lake Como, in the town of Sangiovanni di Bellagio. At first he recived orders from his customers and the company created boats for fishing and for transporting goods and people across the lake. Sixty years later, Giovanni’s grandson and namesake bought a building in Brienno with the plan to transform it into a fully functioning boatyard. Here the first boats were built, laying the foundations for the kind of quality that still distinguishes Cranchi products. Giovanni "Junior" had a real passion for detail. He personally selected the best materials and controlled every step of construction. After a brief period spent outside Italy
because of the war, he resumed production in 1952, with the support of his children, and dedicated himself to building wooden boats throughout the 60s. This period saw the birth of the Taunus, Faster, Sbarazzino and Dinghy 12 P as well as a series of sailboats. The year 1970 was a watershed moment for the company, when Aldo (Giovanni’s son) began producing fiberglass boats. At the same time, the company began moving away from a handcrafted manufacturing process to a more industrialized one. For the first time in the history of Italian boatbuilding, machines were introduced into the Piantedo plant by Tullio Monzino, co-founder of the new company. The period began with impressive figures: Pilotina (1,550 units in six years), Scout (500 in five years), Rally 20, Hobby 20, Derby 700, Clipper 760, Start 21 and Cruiser 32. The plant was

Dozens of technicians, designers, engineers and model makers in four different departments work on the boats’ designs, flanked by the expertise of the company’s , style center, prototype
R&D department department and laboratories.

New products This generation’s management has overseen the creation of the latest additions to the line: the Panama 24 and 32, the Fifty HT 8 and 54 Fly. The first two are part of the outboard line. The first model, 32 feet long, was equipped with two 250-horsepower Honda outboard motors for her official launch, but can just as easily be sold with other brands. At less than a hundred thousand euro, she is highly affordable. The 24 is ideal for day trips on the water, and is equipped with two berths below deck. The Panama line is particularly easy to handle and requires very little maintenance, while offering great flexibility and maximum customization options for the motor. The Fifty8 model of the HardTop line, 18.52 meters long and 4.85 wide, can be powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS 800 600 hp or two 700HP Volvo Penta IPS 900s. THere are three cabins plus a crew cabin and reaches a top speed of 31/33 knots or 33/35 knots depending on the engine. Autonomy is respectively 300 or 295 at cruising speed. Finally, the 54 Fly (17.2 meters long and 4.8 wide) has a maximum capacity of 14 people and the same engine options as the Fifty8 HT. The fly, accessible by ladder from the cockpit, houses the bridge, sofas, a large sundeck, dining table and kitchenette.

ombining sportiness and performance with exceptional on-board comfort
might seem (or rather, is) a daunting task. There will certainly be inevitable challenges, particularly when designing open pleasure craft, with their particular ratio of volume, spaces and proportions. This was the Overmarine shipyard’s goal for the 165, the company’s flagship, in 2007. To achieve this goal, the company turned to Stefano Righini, one of the sector’s top masters of the Italian style. The choice could not have been better. Together Righini and Overmarine have created one of the world's largest open yachts, 50 meters in overall length: a megayacht which has been dazzling the public for nearly six years. Most dazzling of them all are the seventh version, prèmier at the last Fort Lauderdale Boat Show and the eighth, the sale of which was announced a few months ago. Both are owned by American owners and represent the successful premiere of this model in the United States. They epitomize what Italian design and manufacture is all about. As much today as ever before, they express the combination of timeless beauty matched by maximum functionality that has always been the hallmark of Italian excellence. The 165 allows you to zip along safely at sea at top speeds (up to 38/40 knots) while enjoying interiors worthy of a luxury villa. These US customers are proof that Overmarine’s clientele do not only hail from Mediterranean or the Middle East, although the first six models produced were sold in those areas. "Our interest in the American market has always been keen and we are extremely proud of this debut," says Maurizio Balducci, CEO of the Mangusta-Overmarine Group. The brand's presence in America has also been re-enforced thanks to the col-
The interiors were designed by the owner together with Overmarin’s team of architects, resulting in a 4-cabin layout comprised of master’s quarters, two guestrooms and a vip cabin. The main interior design features are made of teak and stainless steel, with dark brown leather furniture and wall coverings, camellia-colored leather on the ceilings and colored parquet wood floors.

Entering from the stern we come first to the saloon with a card table, a black Zimbabwe-marble-topped wet bar with a built-in tv, a lounge area with a corner sofa in ivory-colored fabric and brown leather armchairs. Forward there is a wooden dining table bordered in chrome with a brown leather top. It can accommodate up to 10 people and is topped by a sliding roof that opens to view the sky by day and the stars at night. The bridge features state-of-the-art instrumentation (including Furuno radar, KVH satellite communication, Nobeltec electronic maps and C-Plath Navipilot autopilota) and MTU and KaMeWa-Rolls Royce technology for engine and transmission control.
At left, the lower deck lounge with its maxi-screen. Below, the master quarters. The master and vip baths (pictured here) are in burnished bronze marble, while that of the guest cabins were done in Diva Beige.

Consuption and speed range
Cruising speed is estimated at 35 knots with all three motors running, with fuel consumption at 2,300 liters per hour. At maximum speeds of 38/40 knots, this increases to 2,850 liters per hour. At 25 knots with only two engines running, excluding the generators, consumption is around 2,000 liters per hour. It has about 600 nautical miles of autonomy.
Below deck are the sleeping cabins, replete with a cozy lounge furnished with a sofa and a maxi-screen TV. Opposite the lounge is a fitness area that features a treadmill, an elliptical cross trainer and weight training equipment. A hallway leads to the staterooms: one double and one twin guestroom, and a roomy VIP cabin located aft. The master quarters, in addition to its stateroom, includes a study and a library, as well as a double bathroom and a walk-in closet. The crew cabins consist of four twin cabins plus the captain’s quarters, a stainless steel galley with a dinette and direct access to the engine room.

The outdoor areas are breathtaking: there are chill-out zones, conversation areas and various spaces set up for aquatic games. The garage in the stern holds, in addition to the tender, jet skis, air tanks and compressors for scuba diving and an assortment of other equipment, while the starboard gunwale is equipped with a retractable diving board and the fly sports an inflatable slide that lands you right in the water.

The history of the Overmarine Group begins in 1985 when the Balducci family, who still remain today at the helm of the company, made their mark in the global yacht market with the introduction of the Mangusta maxi open and the Mangusta Oceano. With over 300 units sold, the current line includes nine models of maxi opens, from 72 to 165 (as well as plans for a 205 mega open), plus the Mangusta Oceano 148, a triple-deck displacement yacht. Overmarine has 10 different shipyard locations throughout the areas around Viareggio, Massa and Pisa for a combined indoor and outdoor area of about 190,000 square meters. The composite-material molded hulls are manufactured by a subsidiary of the group, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and the company boasts a network of distributors all over the world. In Viareggio the company has its own wharf with a dock equipped with fitting-out berths. The boats have all been designed and tested in Europe’s most important seatrial waters, in collaboration with specialists in the field of fluid-dynamics. Lamination is done internally, applying the latest production processes and the best materials on the market. Expert carpenters and craftsman, the top in their fields, can execute their work in accordance with your customized specifications. 82

o you remember Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday, when he gives his pep
talk to the football players in the locker room? «My team can win or die by an inch!» It’s become one of the most famous lines in the history of cinema. Climbing aboard the Absolute 72 Fly reminded me of that Oliver Stone film. Instead of Al Pacino, I imagined Patrizia Gobbi and instead of football players, the master shipbuilding architects and craftsman. It isn’t a football game that’s about to begin, but work on a new craft at the shipyard: the 72 Fly. They have 2,160 centimeters of length to work with, but they cannot afford to waste a single one. They need to reason as if the centimeters at their disposal were very, very few. As if every single

space, even the smallest and tightest, needed to have a function, a destiny. Otherwise they wouldn’t have been building a flagship, but just a stretched-out version of a smaller model. The 72 has the Dna of a cruise ship: balanced performance, reduced fuel consumption and a lot, but really a lot, of space available. Patrizia Gobbi’s locker room pep talk seems to have paid off. Every corner seems to have leapt off the pages of the fish-eye photographs in a brochure for a hotel or a cruise liner. The difference is that there is no disappointment when you compare the pictures to the real thing. It doesn’t just seem big, it really is big. This is not some trick obtained by exploiting a wide-angle lens to the extreme, but the result of its designers’ incredible attention to detail. Sure, it’s a 20meter long boat, with a width of more than five and a half, but

the list of its contents can give you some idea of what I mean by optimum space utilization. The boat’s four cabins, comprised of the master stateroom, a vip suite and two guest rooms, sleep eight. There are three bathrooms, each with its own shower. At the stern, thanks to the decision to install Volvo Ips transmissions, there is enough space for a twin crew cabin, fitted with its own bathroom and shower, and even a small galley. It is a reasonably sized area, not a cubbyhole. In addition, the position of a porthole window looking out on the stern platform keeps the sailors from feeling cooped up. In addition to the staterooms, for anything you might want to do on board, there are at least two places to do it. Do you want to eat? There are dining tables in the salon, the cockpit, on the fly bridge and even on the bow. Do you want to cook? In the salon or on the fly. Sunbathe? Bow or fly. And for relaxing, you have your choice between the salon, the bow, cockpit or fly. Want to freshen up? Besides the bathrooms, you can do it on the stern platform as well as the fly, since there is a second external shower in the upper deck’s roll bar. All this abundance means guests have a choice of arrea for every activity. One of the main features that struck us was its interior livability and the ample stowage. Below deck ceilings are near-

ly always over two meters high, sometimes abundantly so. Any points under two meters come pretty close. Actual dressing rooms like that of the master stateroom, closets and cupboards furnish all four of the cabins. Even the lockers below deck and on the flybridge were carefully designed to offer maximum volume. The least convincing feature is the position of the self-inflating dinghy. It is stowed up on top of the fly, in a place that would be difficult to access in case of emergency. Other details that enhance the beauty of this craft include the teak gratings that cover the intake tubes from the fuel tank on the portside catwalk and transparent parapets of the fly. The manufacturer has chosen to apply Plexiglas to the stainless steel handrails instead of an opaque material that would block the view. We still need to try her out to see how comfortable she is to sail. Outside the Genoa Airport Marina there are some rollers. The night before, the sirocco winds had been blowing, which, although they have since ceased, have left a legacy of moderately rough waters. Slightly complicating matters further is a breeze of about four knots causing ripples that cross the long waves. Nothing too daunting or even too challenging. In fact, it’s ideal for trying out a fly-

boat to see how she handles the waves. The twin Volvo 900 hp engines and an Ips 1200 transmission are a perfect choice for balancing power and lowered fuel consumption. At 22 knots she burns only 255 liters per hour. To skim 170 suffice while at top speed she burns 320 lt per hour. Considering that we are aboard craft that is over twenty meters long, equipped with a fly and the weight a fly entails, this result is good. Ips transmission also makes the craft easy to handle. Tacking with the throttle lowered is pretty tight, but not excessively. Even when piloting from the flybridge you never get the feeling that you are tipping over. The only defect in piloting is that the 72 is rather wet. Even with a relatively calm sea and mild wind, we still got sprayed even up on the fly. Of course to get sprayed, you need to take the waves head on. Sailing normally only the deckhouse gets “sprinkled”. It’s just a matter of centimeters. If you want the maximum living space inside, the boat needs to be a little “paunchy”. If the “V” of the prow had been a bit tighter and the deadrise angle more accentuated, maybe she would have been able to cut through the waves more efficiently, but at a cost of sacrificing a few centimeters of the vip cabin.
The two Volvo Penta D13 IPS 1200 give good propulsion and low consuptions: she burns 255 liters per hour at 22 knots.

e don’t know if it is a collateral effect of the crisis but, if this
were indeed the case, one could also dare to say that every cloud has a silver lining. The collateral effect in question is a series of vessels of moderate dimension, easy to manage and of excellent marine quality. Why are they “daughters” of the crisis? Because we are dealing with a market made by people who are already ship owners and that intend to go down in dimension, without, however, giving up on the boat. There is, in addition to this, at least we hope, also some new ship lovers taking there first steps from the platform
towards the cockpit. The somatic features of this typology are those of hulls able to navigate with “nimbleness”. This means that they are fast vessels, but not extremely fast, hulls with a profound V able to take on even a rough sea and a rather moderate dimension. The Austin Parker 36 should also be included in this “family”. It measures a total of 11 meters. Without a stern platform, the hull stops two centimeters before the decisive 10 meter mark. It is a craf - no registration, no tax disc and maybe even a covert message for the revenue service. Roman Abrahamovich has never climbed on board a boat. The lifeboats of his Eclipse probably measure a total of more than 10 meters long. The recently introduced redditometro (the italian system for assessing income), sanctions (thankfully) a principal of equality. Possessing a vessel does not mean being richer than some-
The deck and the inside are characterized by high livability: the height of the rooms and adequate bed dimensions, the presence of divanettes, sunbathing areas and numerous lockers to store things in. The door to enter to the bathroom is round and bulging, it “steals” space from the dinette and allows a shower box separated from lavish dimensions.

The joystick (optional) represents by now an element that one cannot do without, since it facilitates the maneuvers in the mooring phase, but the transmissions with the stern drives are more than sufficient for this hull, in terms of speed and, above all, consumption.

one who owns a second house or a camping van. The Austin Parker 36 has more at its disposition than that which is dictated by rationality. There is sentiment, above reason. In what does it consist? In pleasure, found, in navigating. If we must look for a minimum common denominator of these new easy to manage vessels of contained dimensions, it is navigability. Many are boats or a bit more, but above all they are boats with a hull fixed well in the water. They are able to take on even a strong and demanding sea. They are rather fast, but not extremely so and do not consume excessively. They are boats which are pleasurable to navigate. They care for substance, more than form. Not that they are poorly made, grossly or crudely rifinished.
They are also pleasing to the eye, in particular, they are made to navigate, to enjoy the sea. It may sound absurd, but this was not something to be taken for granted a few years ago. When we climb on board the Austin Parker 36, in the Gulf of Tigullio, one of those days that isn’t forgotten easily awaits us. In the summer there is mist and in the winter a cocoon-like environment. When there is muggy air, you have the feeling of being in Mexico City or of still being immersed in the metropolitan smog. The Tigullio is more beautiful during the winter. A clear sky is above us. On the back side of Mt. Portofino you can count the trees one by one. When the bow exceeds the break water, the view of the horizon leaves us perplexed. There is no wind or even a single wave, but in the distance the sea seems to be decisively agitated. The whole horizon line appears this way. It almost seems as if a Tsunami is coming, but the comandor, the sailor and I all agree that, in that case, it is better to be at sea than ashore. And so we proceed towards the lake. This vessel has its best quality in its manageability, with the helm in hand you have the feeling of driving a bumper car at an amusement park. You can turn sharply, without the boat breaking into pieces. It heels, but not too much. It is able to close a 360 degree turn occupying a diameter of not more than 30-40 meters. It is agile and spins around itself well at rest, all you have to do is invert the driving direction of the two motors. For those left unsatisfied, there is still the Volvo joystick, the same one used for the IPS. The motors used during the test are two 260 horsepower D4s with sterndrive transmission. IPS 350 transmissionis also available, but the prise rise sto 16,000 euros, just like the choice to install the joystick causes the price to rise to 17,500 euros.

BARCHE February 2013
With the gas throttle lowered the speed rises to 34 knots, whereas in order to reach planing a bit less than 9 knots suffices. The cruising range is therefore very wide. As for as consumption, on the other hand, the two motors absorb more a bit over 100 lt/h at the maximum and only 23 as far as planing minimum. The quantity of gasoline necessary to travel a mile is very much restrained: you pass from about 2.5 to 3.5 litres. The deck and the interior are dedicated to habitability. The below deck height is about 183 cm and the bed sizes are adequate, as is that of the bathroom. The same philosophy is found in the layout of the deck: space and volume in abundance. Besides the divanettes and the sunpad, there are numerous lockers to stow various things. One in particular, which is accessed from the cockpit and is located at the aft of the local bathroom, is so deep that it can hold all of the fenders. The solution for the auto inflatable raft which comes equipped with a specific compartment and is easily accessible once again from the cockpit, is also convincing. There are two flaws that we have observed. The noisiness in the cockpit remains elevated even at low speed and the soundproofing of the motor room could also potentially be improved upon. In addition, the structure that holds the soft top lacks in height, but this imperfection can be remedied because at the driver’s station there is a sort of rise of about 10 cm and all one would have to do would be to remove that in order to remedy the situation. Our time has come to an end. It is time for us to return to the port. No Tsunami overtook us. That which we see is in the horizon is probably an optical effect resulting from the large visibility of the sky. Beautiful day. Beautiful navigation.

t is easy to think that in a crowded and naturally popular market sector, that of
cruisers within 10 meters in length (purchasable as boats), there isn’t much new to talk about. While there have been some different ideas in the past 10 years, it is better to not risk too much. So where is it still possible to tell the difference? In the design and attention to detail and in the constructive methods. Not innovation of product, but of process. That which is not seen, that which probably does not make one more boat sell today, but which creates a true added value and constitutes an investment in the short and long term, both for the shipyard and for the client. The Atlantis 34 is the first model to use a “six hand collaboration between three companies, to give life to a product that
On the inside one can find the kitchen (bottom right) that has a dinette (on the side), where 6 people can be accommodated; at night it can be transformed into a 2 x 2.5 meter queen-sized bed. At the stern, on the other hand, we were able to obtain a full out cabin (above).

astonishes more intrinsically than cinematografically. On the one hand, the technical office of the shipyard, which brags of consolidated experience in hull construction with the vacuum-sealed lamination method. On the other hand, the Neo Design studio of architecture, which the complete renovation of the range began two years ago with the 48 and continued with the 44, 38, 58 and this time the 34, is entrusted to. And, at last, the third actor involved is Seaway Engineering, a Slovenian studio specialized in the optimization and rationalization of productive processes. We are already familiar with the aesthetic: high belt line, trapezoidal windows, subtle yet aggressive hardtop design. The pilot house of the stern is spacious, 2.5 meters, and has a door with a step leading to the cockpit. Here, in the Atlantis style, there is no sharp distinction between inside and outside, but rather you live in a
Besides light, air is also plentiful: the side windows do not close completely, at the stern there is no door and the canvas hood opens manually for the whole hardtop extension. A significant element has to do with the use of space: the total usable volume of the lockers, closets and furniture below deck is 1.350 liters, significantly greater than one squared cube.

A technical comment about the hull The Atlantis 34 is constructed by resin vacuum infusion (vinylester on the external coats) on fiberglass. In support of the hull there is a structural frame and a semi-structural mortarboard, both realized with the same procedure and balsa sandwich. The deck is also produced in this way (infusion and sandwich). The external layer of the hull is covered in an iso-neo-pentyl-glycol white gelcoat. The hull, at variable dihedral, closes with a rather accentuated deadrise of 17.87 degrees at the stern. The motor room is of suitable dimensions for this type of boat and motorization. It contains, among other things, two carburetor reserves, two gas filters (one per motor), a 30 liter boiler, the autoclave and two bilge pumps, one double action electric and one manual. Two other bilge pumps operate on the internal sections.

single environment, from the sofa/dinette/sunpad aft to the windshield, passing by an “accessorisable” piece of furniture on the right and a chaise-lounge on the side of the steering gear. Two rather simple gangways (21 cm long, just right for a deck beam of 3.52 meters maximum) lead to the classic sunpad at the bow, adequate for three people and equipped with cup holders on both sides. The real kitchen with a sink, double induction cooker, and 80 liter refrigerator is located in the quad. There is also a dinette where in case of bad weather or excessive heat, 6 people can be accommodated, and at night it can be transformed into a 2 x 2.25 meter queen-sized bed. At the stern we were able to obtain a real cabin, separated with a door, where a high entrance of 195 cm leads to a bunk bed with a side comfortable and breezy queen-sized bed. The on board bathroom, despite not having a separate shower, does not lack a well finished grating in teak pavement. Speaking of used materials, the essential oils in the sessile oak and the finishing that we find on board is the same that are found in the larger models.
The test The test took place in conditions which are rather severe for this kind of boat: 7 people on board, full of water, two meter high waves. Or rather, that which we journalists hope for when we must make the quality of a vessel emerge, but that which a ship owner faces with difficulty in the day to day of his voyages. Let’s start with the negative remarks: the engines, that do not generate vibrations even on a minimal level, are a bit too loud when the turbines start to operate. And the hood mechanism, deliberately simple in order to avoid a burden

on the superstructures and useless complications, is… just too simple. It is necessary to review the block system, which on our model lacked friction and did not contain a hook in the closing position. Having said this, we plunge into the waves. The response of the motors is good, planing is reached in about 15 seconds (a lot less in ideal conditions, we are certain) and the driving position rests secure both on the waves and during turning. The helm (intended as the stern drives) responds immediately to commands and does not ever induce: we did not even notice that there is no power steering, seeing as though it is authentic and progressive. But the more favorable impression is obtained by the behavior of the hull in this kind of sea: taking on the bow waves, we never had a thumble, dry impact or crash on the pedal boat or stern. The entrance is gentile and directional control is never lost. This is definitely the characteristic of the Atlantis 34 that impressed us the most. A few splashes hit us with a head sea, but these waves and strong winds added to our speed could have bothered us a lot more. Besides the excellent functioning of the hull, the robustness of the rest of the structure is noteworthy: a sign that the complete project is homogenous, and that the boat is well assembled.
During navigation, even with adverse or non-ideal conditions, as was the case during the test, it seems that the keel is always steadily inserted in the water and reacts to the input exactly as we want it to.

o trace of wind or waves. We set sail from Porto Lotti a bit disappointed. We are on board the Coronet 3600,
one of Tiara’s latest innovations, presented only a few months ago in the United States. The boat which we are getting ready to test is the first model to have arrived in Europe. Tiara has been for a long time a synonym for fisherman, which means a profound V at the prow that descends progressively towards the stern, forming a less accentuated deadrise angle. In one word: stability. The fishermen are rather fast boats, able to move rapidly from one point to another, and especially, able to take on strong waves and seas.
Equipped with four berths below deck (photo on the right hand page, above), the Coronet 3600 is able to be appreciated both as a day cruiser and a short-range cruising vessel.

Today the gulf of La Spezia looks more like a lake on a tranquil mid-season afternoon, rather than an ocean during a storm. Not bad, we will make do. With the motors on minimum, we have the opportunity to appreciate the silence, also thanks to the submerged exhaust pipes. The engines consist of two 380 cv Cummins with shaft line transmissions. Two alternatives are also available. One with the same motors, but with the ZF Pod, and the other with two MerCruiser gas engines. Beyond the dam and the mussel breeding, the gulf of La Spezia has a pleasant surprise in store for us.: traffic. As occurs frequently in this area, different containers, merchant ships, and military ships enter and leave the port. They are not exactly the white horses of the ocean, but the ski waves that they provoke are more than sufficient to get an idea of the quality of the hull. And the judgment can only be positive. The Coronet jumps and does not dismantle, both when taking on transverse waves and when intersecting them with the prow. The visibility is always excellent, the only minimal obstacle arises from the inox columns of Bimini, but this can be overcome easily, thanks to the pilot seat which can be regulated electronically. In terms of manageability, with the boat at a standstill, it turns right around with ease, all you need to do is invert the direction of the two motors without even having to operate the helm. Sharp turns at high speed, however, end up being less successful. The steering gear appears slightly under dimensioned compared to what is needed. To close a 360° turn with the gas lever all lowered, the

The Coronet with i Pod ZF and hydraulic steering probably operates better. The 760 total cv reveals itself to be a spot-on selection. This is suggested by the acceleration and consumption. The “surge from a standing start is exalting: 5 seconds to reach planing and 23 to reach maximum velocity. At this point, what exactly awaits us? Trolling, long line fishing, or vertical jigging? The cockpit is
A tecnical comment about the hull The hull of the Coronet 3600, just like the cover, is built with an external gelcoat and handmade fiberglass. The longerons are made of composite wood and integrated on the hull also with hand made fiberglass. This productive system that, like some time ago, uses a highly specialized workforce of true artisans, can afford an attention to detail that a mass-production cannot always guarantee. In order to realize what this means, it is enough to lift the dunnage and the floor of the inside of the Coronet 3600: the whole internal segment of the bilge is coated in gel, just like the external part of the hull.
years later he decided to start his own business and by 1955, he was working full time in his business, producing a good 35 boats in a year. He started with the runabouts in wood, but knew quickly how to be
innovative. In 1958 he introduced the glass resin and two years later the whole production of the hull was in fiber glass. In 1977 the pursuit brand was added, also realized by the Slikkers family.

vacant and lends itself to satisfy the demands of fishing lovers, but the Coronet 3600 is also a lot more. The layout of the deck was studied to make itself appreciated also by pleasure boaters. On the left, more or less in the center of the boat, the linear bench can be enriched with a small table to create a living area out in the open. An optional bar with a grill kitchen that is added to the kitchen located below deck is offered. Even the cockpit, the unassailable temple of fishermen, lends itself to double use. On the side of the stern, a rollaway lbench for four people was set, and moving forward, towards the pilot house and living area, there are two mezzanine seats for a total of four people. In all, 10 passengers can also accommodate themselves in the cockpit. Below deck, there are four bed spaces, two in the dinette and two more “sacrificed” towards the stern, a kitchen and a real bathroom with a separate box style shower. The finishing is definitely not of fisherman style: a lot of teak wood, from the pavement to the inox handrails, confers upon the vessel the typical traits of a cruiser model.

The rigging combines fiberglass on clear wood and dark tapestries, creating a very pleasant light contrast illusion. The inside offers two separate but very livable areas, with a big dinette with a queen sized bed (below to the right) and a local bathroom (below to the left) The spaces on board are modulated in a well organized way, with the deck free enough to fish in the area most appropriate for that activity (the cockpit), while at the bow a solarium zone was also created.

he Osia 315 is a concentration of solutions for high level fishing, and at the
same time it can be used for family and friendly excursions or for a vacation in total independence. It is a fishing boat in the true sense of the term, especially if one concentrates on the cockpit, where the intervention of intelligent ideas for the realization of that which a fisherman needs is clear, and it is not easy to tell that on the inside there is cabin cruiser space, with exceptional height and two different rooms. And yet, there is everything. We continue to the right side of the console, looking out to the dinette, where one can find a piece of furniture adaptable to create an optional kitchen area, a shorter frontal cabinet, a bed that can be stacked towards the bow and convertible into a queen-sized bed, multi-lateral netting accessory pockets, frontal mirror, lights and a porthole. The bed area has a height of about 1.50 meters, while at the entrance and where the furniture is, the height is 1.92 meters. From here, one can also access the local bathroom. On the outside, at the prow, the locker for the electric pulley can be found, while the anchor is located externally in the keel area. The bow offers space both for fishing and enjoying the sun, has two chaise-lounges with underlying lockers/basins and can be equipped both with a central movable table (optional), that with two cushions can be adapted into a complementary sun bathing area or living room. On the front of the console on the other hand, there is space for a fixed sun bed and, below, an ice box beneath the seat. The pilot house serves as a watershed with the working area for fisherman. Here we can find every type of equipment, from the bait station, with a basin for up to 160 liters of live fish, a pump for water replacement, light and a window overlooking the cockpit to verify the state of health of the bait, a sink with a removable cutting board, a series of caskets, and two more sinks for the fish. The sofa is foldable into the wall, if necessary, while a perimetral lining
makes for a soft support during fishing while standing. The cockpit has a surface of 3 square meters and is equipped with racks on the walls, valves for fresh and sea water, electrical sockets for an eventual electrical sinker, a tuna door to anchor in substantial prey and a series of rod holders.
The Test We tested out the boat at the Yamaha Motor Italy meeting, organized in Varazze. The Osia 315, had been motorized for the occasion with the maximum power installable, or rather a copy of Yamaha F300 Betx (the hull is also offered with a pair of 250 horsepower). While we leave the dock, we ascertain that we are carrying about 600 liters of carburetor, 70 liters of freshwater, fishing rods and various fishing equipment, in addition to four crew members. At the harbor, we appreciate the maneuverability of the hull even in tight spaces, a combined result of the use of electric remote controls by wire, the standard hydraulic SeaStar II steering gear, and the correct assembling of the stem X motors (up to 635 mm transom height). Having left the harbor, we try to ascertain the obtainable speed that is possible while keeping at least one motor operating (1.6 knots), and then both (2.6 knots), useful values for anyone who takes part in troll fishing. Afterwards, we evaluate the time needed to make the boat

Technical Comment about the Hull Cantieri Capelli oversaw the construction and operation of the keel with the use of 45 and 90 degree multiaxles crossed and permeated through an infusion stratification with a vinylester skin coat, to which a high density pvc core is added, metal struts in polyurethane, covered in resin and with a structure composed of wood bulkheads, covered with glass fiber and coupled. The Osia 315 cover on the other hand, is made manually using orthofalic resins, coremat reinforcements on the points subjected to the most exertion and high density pvc. The structure also foresees the application of wood covered in fiber on which various accessories which enrich the hull can be secured.

plane from a standing start. Below, the single lever control (trim kept under) and the chronometer switch. When we stop it the time impressed is 3.2. We don’t stop the hull, but we let it instead slide on the water, causing waves which present themselves once the sea starts to calm down after strong movement. First we navigate with the transverse waves; we then lower the bow directly towards the waves, a maneuver which does not necessitate gas reduction given the excellent design of the hull line. We progressively rise in knots and at 4,000 rpm (still with trim under) the gps signals 28 knots and a total consumption of 78 lt/h. With 1,000 more knots we exceed 35 knots, but even the threshold of 110 lt/h of consumption, and at last we reach 5,700 knots which corresponds to a speed of 41 knots. At this point we attempt to raise the trim, bringing it back to 75% of the excursion, and we obtain a speed increment of 3 knots (44 knots) and of rpm (6,100 rpm), while full speed consumption (both with the trim underneath and at 75%) strongly rise to 200 lt/h. The latter is a very important consideration for ones wallet, but also for on board autonomy, seeing as though the shipyard carefully arranged reservoirs of up to 1,150 total liters, that guarantee at least 5 hours of autonomy or 10 hours at 4,500 rpm at full speed. With the bow wave we significantly appreciate the softness of approach of the cutwater, which slices through the water without causing splashes on board, in addition to the easy breakage maintenance even in the most complex of moments, such as when we enter into a dry veer at over 37 knots, a very well stabilized turn from an internal gliding perspective. Decreasing progressively in rpm we find the point of “minimum glide” around 2,900 rpm and 14 knots, not bad considering the gross tonnage of the hull.

Suzumar 390 AL is a brand produced in China and marketed by Suzuki Italy, sold together with a DF15S, but experienced by me with the new 20-inch horses power model, DF20A, with the electronic fuel injection system and the Lean burn. Since it is a removable one, the practicality is all in the lower components which can be separated when we must prepare to go home at the end of the day. In our case, there is only a bench as an extra piece of dunnage that goes from tubular to tubular allowing two people to sit on board, the bag can be placed where there are life jackets, two paddles, the fuel tank and the battery . Apart from the first bow in wood, the rest of the dunnage is made of aluminum; the pieces are four and assembled together with the help of metal struts. As it is an inflatable keel, the bow has a central hole to allow a direct access to the inflation valve, which is useful also to correct the internal pressure during navigation. The other valves (three of them at low profile) are distributed in the inner part of the tubular which have gunwales glued at the top that support the classic handrails at the rope, to which some rings and two han-
dles in fabric in proximity of the poop are added. This has a large central scupper for the outflow of the onboard water with an external cap which, in addition to being glued to the tubular, is also in part bolted. Another feature is the central metal part around which the motor terminals are tightened. The terminals have the classic cone configuration, while outside the tubular proposes a glued fender and two handles of hard rubber in the poop. The pull starter motor requires very little effort, while the slewing of the joystick is ergonomically designed to open or close the turn with a certain tranquility. In water the driving experience is pleasant and four on board can evenly be distributed without annoying each other too much. We are sailing on the Havel River and the river is calm, so that allows us to "pull" the engine without too much trouble over 15 knots. At full speed, 6,100, it consumes 6.2 liters of fuel per hour, which with a classic 25-liter tank gives a range of four hours. Outlining the turn, the boat goes into the fold while maintaining the keel tight around the liquid surface, thus providing good safety.

Oriental Dream and 8line Zanin Luxury Coverings presents root-wood tiles, inlaid with mother of pearl: the inlay work of the Oriental Dream Line has been handcrafted by Italian artisans based on a design by artist Irina Zanin, where the mother of pearl, flanked by hardwood, root and precious metals, come together to create a masterful tapestry. The line can be custom made using your choice of 60 different inlay colors and 18 types of wood, six root woods and three precious metals. 8line, instead, created by Perusko & Sartori Design, uses mosaics by Prestige & Vitruvius in which the mother of pearl tiles blend with steel, chrome or 24k gold finishings, married to exotic wood veneers. These are made with 3 centimeters of a choice of 21 different hardwood essences which can be combined at will. The inserts boast a special finish allowing the mosaics to be used for flooring, while for walls sculpted inserts can be used. www.madreperlazanin.it

I-Bridge For total navigational control, Team Italy has created IBridge. I-Bridge is a system which allows you to integrate together, in terms of ergonomics and HMI (Human machine interface), any of the growing number of navigational devices and instruments produced by a variety of manufacturers. This is possible through a careful selection of navigation sensors, and by studying and identifying the how to best use and integrate them into one system. The result is that every feature of the IBridge is intuitive, simple and dependable and assures complete navigational control at every phase of operation. Managing the various subsystems is facilitated by the "Multicontrol system", which allows you to monitor several instruments at a time, using one standardized interface. Further, it allows you to operate from several different command posts, each perfectly identical in every way, both in terms of function and aesthetics. The subsystems which can be integrated include radar, chartplotters, nav data conning, engine data conning, monitoring, CCTV, VHC and other navigational instruments. www.team-italia.it

Motor Cure and Maintenance
Life is tough! If a motor could express a desire, it certainly would not choose to be installed on a recreational vessel. The engineer-author of this text explains to us the reason in a semi-serious tone, even though the advice that can be derived from it is very serious tetx by Andrea Piccione drawings by Luca Galimberti
A
motor is - in a nutshell - a system that transforms the chemical ener-
gy contained in the carburetor into mechanical energy. This is accomplished by utilizing combustion, the alternate piston-crank mechanism which allows the rotation of the mast and therefore the propeller. Around the motor is a series of accessory devices which manage the cooling, lubrification, fuel supply, and disposal of old gas, all necessary for the correct operation of the boat. All of this must “rotate” harmonically to allow it to function according to how it was designed. This impassive technicality is transformed into reality by the pleasure of hearing one’s boat splash out of the water when stepping on the gas, in hearing the deep and powerful rumble that assures us of the security and reliability of our companion for this long voyage. The motor does, however, have its needs, and if it could express a desire, it would probably prefer to work as an oscillator: many, many hours spent at the same rpm, regular maintenance intervals, spare parts that are (almost) always original, fuel oil that is (almost) always clean, techs who are (almost) always competent in case problems arise, constant staff. The motors definitely have a boring and regular life, without “ups and downs” (literally, if we are referring to the rpm!) 124

Motor Cure and Maintenance To function perfectly, it is necessary that everything “rotates” harmonically: not only in the motor, but also in the accessory devices (cooling, lubrification, fuel supply, disposal of old gas etc.). Maintenance and constant care, performed by expert hands, are therefore the key words, together with many small details within everyones reach.

The marine motor is in the worst condition that one could imagine: where the owner sees the pure nature of a joke, the pleasure of dinner on board, the adrenaline of a ride at full speed, he sees as his worst nightmare. The marine environment is aggressive by definition: salinity, sea water, algae, corrosion, and a mix a various carburetors. In addition, the motors are “loaded” with usage and work cycles that are a bit bizarre, to say the least. To give a few examples, after months of stagnation, the merciless cold of Sunday arrives for a few hours, or the owner decides to invite his son’s whole class on board, or add a tender to a metric ton, without talking about the hull and the screws used as a breeding ground for mussels and algae. A motor mounted upon a recreational vessel operates 50/60 hours a year on average. A generator works the same amount of hours in less than three days, a truck
motor in a week. It is not good to work irregularly, because of deposits which form in liquids, the oxidations which form in the parts exposed to air, and the use of parts in rubber that “get old?” It would be good to also keep clear of “creative maintenance”, completely random interventions with know-it-all experts in every kind of problem, spare parts coming from the most diverse corners of the world, doit-yourself owners, to “that old mechanic that took care of my Vespa once”? How then, can we improve the life of our motor, rendering it more trustworthy, less subject to breakage, maintaining speeds and low time consumptions, and when it is all said and done, saving money, worries and problems? Here are the golden rules that no owner should take for granted. 1. Original spare parts. Would you change the brake pads of your car with unoriginal materials, risking not

Pagina 127
being able to break, at the expense of everyone on board? Is it really worth saving a few hundred euros on materials? 2. Authorized services. Would you have a tooth removed from someone without a degree or diploma? Advice a financial investment from the know-it-all from the bar down the street? Would you have your motor repaired and maintenanced – something upon which the success of your vacation and the security of your family depends - from someone who is not qualified? 3- Maintenance Intervals. Medicine is to be taken at intervals prescribed by the doctor, and the maintenance carried out when requested by the constructor: oil, filters, belts are materials subject to wear and are called precisely that because, with time, they lose there dependability and efficiency. A component that costs a few euros or is noncomforming can heavily compromise the motor, with economic and safety consequences.
4- Conditions of use. Breaking down in the cold is never a good idea. Just like it is not a good idea to leave the motor unused for months. Have your vessels “hibernated in equipped and competent structures that guarantee that the boat will stay in perfect state. You will gain minor deterioration and greater dependability. 5- Hull cleaning. It is not necessary for you to alter your hull in bivalve livestock and a forest of algae. This all increases the resistance to advancement of your vessel in the water dramatically. The motor ends up constantly pressurized, the mechanical organisms stressed, the functional temperatures augmented, the consumption skyrockets, the motor does not use the normal rpm and does not allow the vessel to reach the declared speed of the shipyard. The hull and the screws should be kept as clean as possible, and the mussels and clams at the market. 6-Do it yourself. Home improvement is a praiseworthy
>
If the motor leaves the boat, the
shipowner and the family stranded during the only week-end of earned vacation, it completely loses trust and disappoints the expectations that everyone had towards it: an
extremely heavy psychological weight that can be avoided with
simple and prudent precautions.

activity. It is not however necessary to take out your creativity on the motor, as long as you are not following operations provided for by the usage manual provided by the head office. 7- Batteries and electronic systems. The modern marine motors have evolved. The clichĂŠ idea that on-board electronics are not desirable, is by now an obsolete argument in the era of internet, tablets and telesurgery. The electronic managing of motors, besides guaranteeing low consumptions and emissions, allows for better speeds and precision in diagnostics. Reliability and duration are by now consolidated arguments. Clearly, the systems and batteries onboard should be treated with care: the official assistance networks usually have diagnostic instruments and the batteries must always be kept in good shape. 8-Gasoline/petrol. The motor burns carbon. It is important that gasoline and petrol are clean and do not present impurities. The filters and pre-filters are fundamental in guaranteeing that the motor always reaches the right carbon range and that it remains clean and without impurities. The modern injection systems work at very high pressure: an unclean carbonator can result in very heavy damage. 9- The instruments. Knowing how to read the dash-
board is important. The modern instrument panels are engaging and very attentive to design, but there function is still to collect the instruments that communicate the information of the board and motor systems. Keeping an eye on the water temperature, the turbine pressure, and the liquid level is fundamental. All of the motors have systems which protect them in case of grave technical problems, but it is fundamental to read and know how to interpret the information before the alarms go off, in order to prevent instead of treat. 10. Bureaucracy. It is proven that purchasing a boat is emotional. The letter in the user manual and maintenance and the correct opening of guarantees are, on the other hand, boring and not very alluring activities. But they must be done. Not getting a warranty, or doing so incorrectly (which is usually the responsibility of the authorized service network) can lead to delays and inconveniences in the implementation of interventions covered by it. It is worth it to spend a few minutes verifying that the information on the warranty form is correct (for example the serial number of the motors) and quickly reading over the most important points of the usage and maintenance manual.
Be careful >of “creative
maintenance, completely random interventions, with know-it-all mechanics who are experts in
every type of problem, spare parts from the most desperate corners of the earth, and do-it-
yourself ship owners.

“Take refuge from the norm”' is the mantra of one of these enchanting luxurious "refuges": opened 14 years ago, overlooking the impalpable sandy beach and bits of Belle Mare coral, The Residence offers a colonial ambience of the 20's, made unforgettable by the architectural grandeur of RuaudelDenizot, decorations and wooden ornaments enhanced by the choice of lights and colors. If the bath in heated pools has not relaxed you enough after a day by the sea, nature and sport, The Sanctuary SPA will cuddle your body and your senses through Carita treatments, before your evening dinner with ocean view in one of the three restaurants offering fine local and international cuisine. Refined locations, high quality service and gourmand food

tall trunks and fan-shaped foliage, shade the deer and tortoises that inhabit the wild hill, immersing the visitor into a real sanctuary of biodiversity. The natural park Domaine de L’Etoile that can be visited by foot, horse or quad is also located in the southern part of the island, and is a botanical jewel that hosts a wonderful playground for children. The natural show continues along the North coast of the island in the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, 10 km from the capital Port Louis, where you can explore 26 hectares of tropical forest in total silence, hearing only the kestrel birds that chase each other through the fronds of towering banana trees and among the giant Victoria Regia water lilies. The Italian creative genius shows its inspiration in the shadow of the towering palms overlooking Labourdonnais estate, in Mapou, in the North of the island’s inland: Veneto chef Fabio de Poli wisely plays with his roots and with the new house, joining heart of palm and olive oil, thyme and coriander, in his restaurant, la Table du Chateau, overlooking the colonial residence brought back to its original splendor in 2006. Le Caudan promenade is the vital core of the capital Port Louis, where you can enjoy shopping malls, bars, restaurants and the Blue Penny Museum, which safeguards some of the most valuable stamps in the world. And who knows if Joseph Conrad - “Heart of Darkness” author who described the island as "a pearl that distills great sweetness on the world" – has tasted the fine rum, Mauritian excellence product whose processing can be followed live in the elegant rhumeria inside the Chamarel Valley, on the road that leads to the waterfalls and the Lands of the seven colors, a palette ranging from gold, to red, to purple.
