“Refresh”
Allarme Fiji
Is the name of the project which allowed the realization, in Genova, of a sack of “green” materials to transport large quantities of fresh water by sea, in flexible, line textile containers which are towable by tugboat. The technology was developed by D’Apollonia (Rina group) and takes advantage of the difference in density between freshwater and sea water, allowing the sack, which has an overall volume of about two thousand cubed meters of liquid, to float. The operation and crew costs are lower compared with transporting by tanker, and this technology is expected to have an impact on the currently uneven distribution of hydraulic resources in some European coasts.
The famous islands signal the abnormal growth of algae in the seas that surround them. «We suspect that this sudden growth over the course of the past few years is caused by changes occurring in the environment, such as the increase in seawater temperatures resulting from climactic changes, the scarce circulation of water in the lagoons, the artificial growth of certain nutritive elements,

2013 is the hottest year ever with 0,57 °C above global averages. According to the data provided by Nasa Gottard Institute of Space Studies and Noaa, the average global temperature will increase by 0,43-0,71 °C; the temperatures of the current year will probably also exceed 2012, which ended up being hotter by 0,45 °C. The increase of temperatures is attributable to climactic variability and global greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the growth of developing countries involved a further increase in CO2 emissions, that reached a record high in 2011.
In Cagliari, during a conference, the idea was launched to create an agreement between the three regional parks of Molentargius Saline di Cagliari, Delta del Po and Maremma in Tuscany, and Albufera (Spain). The objective is to combine the protection of territory and biodiversity with the promotion of environmental and sustainable tourism, because these zones (defined “humid”) must be on the hand protected, but also create richness and give work. The industrial factory Sali Scelti hosted the convention, surrounded by the naturalistic overview that extends for about 1,400 hectares. Ninety crabs were individually placed in a tank with two dark shelters; after they had chosen there preferred refuge among the two, some of them were exposed to an electric shock. They were then moved, and subsequently placed in the tank again three times: most of them did not return to the refuge that they had chosen at the beginning. Those that did not receive the shock, on the other hand, continued to make use of their preferred shelter. «A greater consideration of the treatment of these animals is necessary,» say the scholars.
How an island is born
>
We are in Germany, in Wattenmeer, a kind of lagoon that is part of the North Sea. Here, over the course of 10 years, the true birth of an island took place, dubbed Norderoogsand. It is 7 and a half kilometers long and a bit more than 2 kilometers wide, and began to emerge in 2003. It appears that this phenomenon is due to the current and wind actions that form sandbanks. These are usually destroyed by storms, but with Norderoogsand this was not the case (given its position in a particularly sheltered zone). Today, there are about 50 plants and various animals, such as sea lions and different types of birds on the island.

t was 1975 when the Nonino Prize was born, initially intended for the development of civi-
lization and later evolved as a real intellectual triumph. In this regard, in 1992 Claude Lévi-Strauss (anthropologist, philosopher and contemporary psychologist) noted: "In my life I have travelled a lot, because of my job, to very distant countries, but I have to say that no trip seemed more exotic of the one I did to Percoto. I was in a village where reigned an intense intellectual life as perhaps there are no others in the world. Thanks to Nonino family, the closest contact between the writer and life has been established." In 1977 the Nonino Prize Risit d’Âur is joined to that of literature, to emphasize the permanent validity of peasant civilization, and in 1984 the recognition reserved for a foreign writer was also added. Today, in 2013, Nonino Giannola during the award ceremony has launched an appeal: «We must fight for a better world and save the planet from deterioration avoiding the risk of self-destruction by promoting the the values of culture, science and peasant civilization».
Nonino Risit d’Âur 2013 Special Award to Annie Féolde, Gualtiero Marchesi and Ezio Santin The jury wanted to reward the stars of Italian culinary art: «Three voices and three teachers who as pioneers have made the excellence of Italian cuisine known all over the world. Faithful to the tradition but open to innovation, they represent and honor the dozens of chefs who have brought our food and wine at the heights of excellence». Ulderico Bernardi consigned the prize. Annie Féolde, French, arrived in Italy in 1969, when she met Giorgio Pinchiorri, a young sommelier. They began to work together in the pursuit of quality and dissemination of oenology, combined with some gourmet taste, to create a real restaurant in 1979. Since then she became a full-time cook and over the years her cooking was appreciated and rewarded by various national and international guides. Considered the master of Italian cuisine, Gualtiero Marchesi sees his work as a true art form and says of himself: «I have been and continue to be a student, with the enthusiasm and also the excesses of who wants to know at all costs, to add one more question and then another». opened in Milan in 1977 and had an instant success, obtaining, for the first time in Italy, the three stars in the Michelin Guide, which he returned - the first chef in the world - in 2008. In 1993 he moved his restaurant in a villa in Erbusco; in 2004 he founded Alma (International School of Italian cuisine) and in 2008 he opened the restaurant in Milan Teatro alla Scala Il Marchesino. In 2010 he created the foundation that bears his name following the leitmotif ÂŤwhat is beautiful is goodÂť. Ezio Santin started his activity in 1976 at the Antica Osteria del Ponte in Cassinetta di Lugagnano (MI) and at the beginning he offered traditional dishes with a special attention to the details of quality and freshness of the ingredients. The peak of success came in 1990, when he received the third Michelin star, and in 2005, when the President of the Republic of that time, Ciampi, awarded him the recognition of Cavaliere della Repubblica.

In The Botany of Desire he explored the concept of co-evolution, in particular the evolutionary relationships of the human race with four plants - apples, tulips, marijuana and potatoes -, whereas In Defense of Food is an analysis of the relationship between nutritionism and the Western diet . The rules of food is rather a condensed version of his earlier works, intended to provide a simple framework for a sustainable and healthy diet.

Nonino 2013 Award to Fabiola Gianotti It was she, who on July 4th, 2012, announced the existence of the Higgs boson, to direct the Atlas experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva. A result that helped to change the history of physics. The jury wanted to award "the excellence of a research, unfortunately often humiliated in our country, that has an immense potential." Antonio R. Damasio consigned the prize. The Italian physicist, born in Rome in 1962, was ranked as the fifth most influential figures of 2012 by the American magazine Time Magazine, which also dedicated her a cover. She graduated in Milan, after her doctorate she won a scholarship for young physicists at Cern in Geneva and has worked for various experiments (UA2, Aleph, Atlas) dealing with the development and construction of detectors and data analysis. Since 2009 she has been coordinating the Atlas experiment, one of the most complex and ambitious scientific projects of all times, involving 3,000 scientists from 38 countries. She was also awarded the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Republic by President Giorgio Napolitano. She dedicated the award to 10,000 scientists from 60 countries who have con-
tributed to the discovery of the Higgs boson and all researchers who daily fight against job insecurity and other difficulties.
Internazional Nonino 2013 Award to Jorie Graham She is an American poet who has always carved her verses on the myth, the dichotomies and polarities of existence, probing deeply and experiencing all the trends and feelings of poetry. «A contagious and engaging lyric poetry, where the word finds its ethics and spirituality tending to infinity». Claudio Magris consigned the award. Born in 1950, she is considered one of the most famous voices of the post-war American generation, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Raised and educated in Italy and France, she attended the Sorbonne in Paris and New York University. She taught at the Writer’s Workshop, until she was appointed Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard, first woman to be named to this position. Graham is known for her deep interest in history, language and perception, and her poetry is marked by the trust in verse as a unit of meaning. «A poem is a private story, after all, no matter how public it is. The American shipyard is making its comeback to the motor yacht market, that it had abandoned in 2001. In the course of 10 years, there has been an important evolution, reflected in the innovation of this project developed by the technicians of Viking, in collaboration with the Michael Peters Studio The outside is streamlined and has some characteristics taken from other ranges of the shipyard, such as the salon windows, the lines of the superstructure and of the fiberglass hardtop.
The integrated stern platform is covered in teak and is ideal for swimming and WATER sport activities. From here, two stairways lead to the furnished cockpit with a U shaped couch and a table for open-air dinners.
A glass door leads to the salon, furnished with precious materials from wood to leather, and lighted up by big windows. One is welcomed by a relax area with a sofa, cocktail table and a disappearing TV. Towards the prow, the lunch area is located with a table for 8 and the galley.
On the lower deck there are 5 cabins with bathroom. The master cabin is a full beam suite, and there is a separate entrance for the crew.
The hull was designed to offer exceptional speeds but also good maneuverability and sea endurance. The first vessel on the market (2014) will have two Caterpillar C-32 A’s of 1,925 horsepower each. A cruising speed of 30 knots and a maximum of 35 is expected.
>
The steering gear is at a lowered level and is equipped with Atlantic Marine Electronics equipment. The fly has a lot of seats, a solarium, the bar and grill area, and the central helm station.

A timeless equilibrium Eighty meters of iron and alluminum, polished thinly with soft lines. CRN launched a ship which exalts the concept of relax and hospitality, with six suits with terrace, a beach area with more than 100 square meters and an
armatorial appartment that occupies an entire bridge by Silvia Montagna
Lamberto Tacoli, president and CEO of CRN, said: «Today’s launch should make proud not only our Company and its employees, but the whole Italian boating sector and the Italian Industry in its entirety. The building of a truly ‘unique piece’ like the Chopi Chopi is a tangible example of how creativity, design, technology and craftsmanship can harmoniously ‘contaminate’ each other to achieve absolute excellence. It is products like these that will preserve Italy’s world leadership in this sector».

It was a really nice way to celebrate fifty years of history of the Ancona Gruppo Ferretti shipyard: the inauguration of the biggest ship ever built by CRN and one of the biggest ever realized in Italy. A big party – with 3,000 people including institutions, distinguished guests, employees and the entire Ferretti management – embraced the new 80 meters of six decks of iron and steel with enthusiasm and excitement. The minds that collaborated in the creation of this giant of the sea are the studio Zuccon International Project, that handled

the external lines and the compartmentalization of the inside, and the CRN Engineering team deal with the naval architecture. The furnishings were custom-designed for the owner by interior designer Laura Sessa. It is easy to immagine that on a hull of this size, there is everything and more: It is truly a floating Island, over 1,000 meters of surface, a sole object, custom-built for the owner, who wanted an ad-hoc project to accomodate his guests: six suits with balconies and terraces extendable upon the sea on the main deck, and an exclusive refuge for the owner, with an entire deck included, two external areas equipped with a hydromassage pool and relax zone and an area upon which a helicopter of up to 3,000 kilograms can land. One perk is definitely the beach club beyond 100 square meters, whose hatch transforms into a vast bareback water beach. The relax area also continues on the inside with a fitness zone and a spa with sauna. Particular attention was given to the crew lodgings – with enough room for more than 30 people – in direct contact with the engine room and the garage space. There are two Caterpillar 3516B-C motors, which push the boat at a cruising speed of 15 knots and a maximum of 16. The range at 12 knots, is of about 6,000 nautical miles.

We are losing control! In order to built the Chopi Chopi, an average of 80 people a day and 660,000 total working hours were needed. If we had to lay out all of the electric cables we would reach 100 chilometers in length, including one just for the fiber optic. On board, the crew will be made up of 33 people, and on the inside, there are two elevators that connect the two decks. The value of the ship exceeds 80 million euros and is the 129th construction of CRN.
CEO, Ferretti Group
Lamberto Tacoli
Chopi Chopi will remain in the shipyard for a few more months, where it will carry tests at sea, and have its interior preparations finished. The final delivery to the owner is expected in May, and the first cruise will be in the Adriatic.
Works in progress At the moment, 8 mega yachts of the CRN brand are being manufactured at the Ancona shipyard .There are six megayachts in steel and alluminum – CRN 125 60 m J’Ade, CRN 131 of 74 m (designed by Zuccon International Project) CRN 132 of 73 m (designed by Omega Arhictects), CRN 133 of 60 m (designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design), CRN 134 of 55 m (designed by Nuvolari & Lenard) – and two CRN Navetta 43 of 43 m made of composite, also designed by Zuccon International Project. In addition to these CRN ships, there are 5 custom line maxi-yachts (two 124’ CLs, two CL Navetta 33 Crescendos and a 112’ CL Next) and one 122’ Riva Mythos in alluminum.
Comment from the architect Gianni Zuccon
President and CEO, CRN
“Chopi Chopi, whose external structures and compartmentalization we handled, is a very important goal for my studio, because on the one hand, it is currently our biggest realization, and on the other hand, it consitutes the beginning of a new phase of research, focused on the definition of vessels of larger dimensions. From a linguistic perspective, the 80 meter was concieved from the conviction that a new “custom product” must always find its motivations in the search for a wise balance between history and innovation, i.e. between the cultural convic-
tions of the designer and the new opportunities that the specific requests of the owner can offer. This vessel, that I will permit myself to define “timeless”, as a result of its balanced linguistic and volumetric system, which is also attentive to all of those conotations espressed by contemporaneity (trasparency, flexibility, indoor/outdoor relationship ecc.), underlines yet again my conviction that the product should be concieved as the result of a correct and clear fusion of the linguistic element, and the ergonomic functional element.”

Princess 52 The boat 50 has always been the flagship of this range, for performance and spaces, and to replace it with this new model seemed a difficult task to many people. But the 52 promises to meet this challenge while maintaining agility, power and volume uncommon for this size. Even in this case the hull is a deep V to have water tightness and at the same time to reduce the planing speed for more efficient performance. On the main deck, the cockpit has teak dining table with ample seating, sheltered from the sun during the hottest hours thanks to the fly. An optional hydraulically powered mechanism transforms the aft deck in an area for the launching and recovery of the tender. A second table is used for outdoor dining on the flybridge. Here there are also sundecks (through the conversion of seats) and an optional bar piece of furniture. The kitchen is located aft of the salon: it creates a suitable environment for the entertainment of guests, both in the cockpit and
around the inside table. Below deck there are three cabins: the owner one is at the center of the boat and is equipped with panoramic windows on both sides, the Vip is at the bow and the double one is on the right side. A the very stern you can request an additional single bed cabin.

Here below, François Gabart the winner of this exciting and unique race. Below, Banque Populaire who came in second with Armel Le Cleac’h. e is 29 and sailing is his reason for living and his work. He is young
and has much enthusiasm. You might think that these are the basic ingredients of his success. Yet, without maturity and lots of wisdom you go nowhere in the Vendée Globe, except maybe to another world ... In short, circumnavigating the globe solo, nonstop and without assistance, it is not a business for everybody. Reaching the finish line (Les Sables d’Olonne) is already a success for reckless people who face this challenge. Winning it is only for real heroes. And it is so that many of the participants are considered in
the native country of this competition, France. Here, and in particular in this race, courage, preparation, ability to push forward the limits of human endurance are almost appreciated. Thinking to participate is itself an act of daring. Who attends this race, then, makes not only a sporting experience, but transcends himself, knowing the infinity as he throws himself headlong in it, challenging it. Solo. The circuit conditions are among the worst and for almost three months the only real priority for the racers is to save the skin and to push the boat always forward by anticipating its behavior. Where's the fun? Obviously it cannot miss, as in this whole adventure the engine is always one: passion.
Who is François Gabart? He is an easygoing but very methodical skipper, with an accurate and scientific approach to navigation. But the basis of his qualities are the impetus and the wonder of going on the sea, feelings as old as the oceans themselves. From West to East The circuit starts and finishes at Les Sables d'Olonne, past the Cape of Good Hope, and circumnavigates Antarctica, through Cape Leeuwin and the well-known Cape Horn. • The first segment, the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean towards the South, is crucial for the outcome of the race because strong winds can disadvantage or facilitate the participants in a decisive way. A lot of tactics must be used as a single error of judgment can result in hundreds of miles lost. • A fortiori, the strategy becomes crucial moving to the southern hemisphere, in tropical waters (Doldrums): they are a nightmare for sailors, due to strong gusts, storms, torrential rains or ... calm.
Weather forecasts must be checked and every detail must be analyzed to get to the island of St. Helena, in the Gulf of Guinea, where a wind sometimes blows that brings direct to Brazil, which is in the opposite direction of the one designated. • In the Indian Ocean, between the Cape of Good Hope and Tasmania, you enter another world: little light, stormy seas, strong winds, cold, damp. This is the point where you feel the true loneliness, inside and outside. At the limit, surrounded by ice, among the "roaring forties" * sailors can meet the real danger, the fear of not succeeding. • Towards the Pacific: after the onslaught of Cape Horn, they begin to sail towards home. But difficulties do not decrease, you must pay attention to icebergs, day and
night, watch the radar, but this is not enough. Tough always with open eyes, the risk of collision is high. • You come back to South Atlantic waters. It is here, however, that many of the participants of the previous editions have decided to retire, exhausted from what they had just passed and not willing to face the Pamperos, polar winds that blow violently near the coast of Argentina. • For those coming up here, there is the last stage in the North Atlantic, where a few signs of civilization began to reappear, a cargo or a passenger ship. Until there are the first lights of the coast. You come home, alive, and navigate in the channel of Les Sables surrounded by a lot of fans who welcome the new heroes.

Characterized by a wide beam and a considerable length on the waterline, it has computer systems on board to collect data for navigation and weather forecasts, as well as autopilots increasingly technologically advanced. The deck equipment facilitates, for obvious reasons, the runhanded situations in adverse weather and extreme conditions. The hull shape allows the yacht to "surf" the giant waves of the South and to reach speeds of over 25 knots. Security is a fundamental condition, and since 2000 all boats must ensure a good buoyancy in case of boarding water or in the case of capsizes. Each boat is self-sufficient for the 55,000 km it has to travel, thanks to solar energy, wind power and hydraulics. The test made by Barche has shown how that navigation is silent: on the bridge, noise has never exceeded 75 dBA. The new engine has allowed reorganization of the C68 interior spaces increasing the surface area available to guests on board. But the real advantage is represented by 12,000 euro savings on the purchase of diesel fuel for 80 hours of navigation per year compared to the version with engines equipped with shaft line transmission.

very long journey begins always with a little step». Who
said this was known as the "great helmsman" (Mao Tse Tung), although the nickname was not given him for his sea talents. More than five years have passed since that small step and the journey seems to be marked. The step has been made, of course, by a foot, but a bit unusual one, as it is called IPS. It’s thanks to Volvo Penta and its engineers who have designed a new type of transmission. The history of Pod Volvo with tractor propellers is known. When the first version with a power range from 260 to 435 hp was presented, the engineer Carlo Belloni of Volvo Penta stated that "there is no engineering limit to IPS development." Today that statement has been confirmed. The Ips 1 system was born to power boats ranging from 10 to 15 meters in overall length. It stood halfway between a classic stern outdrive and a shaft. The feeling was, even then, that it would not have delayed in developing to meet the needs of larger vessels. Today Volvo Penta proposes, in addition to the first Ips, also the second and the third. Ips 2 is associated to engines of 600 and 700 horsepower, while Ips 3 up to 800 and 900 horsepower. Considering that benefits increase especially in the case of multiple installations, today Ips transmissions can also be mounted on boats up to 24 meters in length with twin motors, much more if the engines are three or even four, as the American yard Lazzara did on 92 feet. After Pod Volvo Cummins MerCruiser Diesel Zeus came, which now offers engines between 355 and 715 horsepower, and then the ZF one for engines up to 1,250 horse-
power. They are not all the same thing, but derive from the same principle. The tractor propeller is a Volvo Penta’s feature. Those of Zeus are duce and with traditional driving direction. The ZF Pod is only a foot and can be coupled with many engines like Yanmar, Cmd, Man, Caterpillar, MTU and FPT. Recently, the ZF’s latest version, allows to create an installation that needs a minor draft. To avoid having one foot that immersed consumes several centimeters, in fact, it is possible to draw slightly concave hulls that enable to accommodate the ZF Pods. It's like if they were semi ducted propellers. Back to origins and to studies related to this transmission, we believe that the engineers at Volvo have started from an elementary observation: do we need to motorize a boat or a rocket ship? The shaft transmission has a special feature. It is oblique, so it pushes not only forward, but also upwards. It’s a pity that the boat does not have to take off, but only to proceed along the water surface. It seems silly and trivial, but Pod Volvo’s benefits start from this. This particular transmission has many arrows at his bow; the first one is just that the thrust is horizontal, not oblique. Consequently, the same performance can be obtained, guaranteed by a shaft line transmission with a lower power. The shaft line wastes power upwards. Greater efficiency in the thrust also means less space and power consumption. The examples abound. The comparison between the Pods and a traditional transmission is not based on theoretical calculations, but on concrete examples. In fact, the cases of vessels that have been motorized with both systems, are many. Volvo has calculated, for example for the C68 of Sessa, that the average fuel saving is around 12,000 Euros. The comparison is done with respect to the same boat with a shaft line transmission. How do we get to this data? The Sessa C68 with shaft line requires two engines

> From the stern to the Pod
The DNA of the stern has Italian molecules, not only Scandinavian or American. When it was patented, the signature on the project was that of Guido Cattaneo. In 1934 he experienced a transmission similar to a stern drive for a short sport navigation. The patent was used during the war to equip small boats for assault that sacrificed the mechanisms in favor of explosives. The idea was then taken up in 1958 by James R. Wynne, an engineer in Miami who had just left Mercury to pursue a transmission that combined the advantages of inboard engines with the foot of an outboard. During the experimentation phase, he used a Volvo engine and this brought him into contact with the Swedish company which immediately realized the potential. The Volvo Penta developed the project and in 1959, at the New York Boat Show, the first stern was shown. The transmission had a huge success and two years later it appeared at the "Boat" Milan Exhibition, that had not yet arrived in Genoa. Even the propeller tractor is a project that owes its parentage to Volvo Penta. The first models were tested in 1980, but it was only in 2007 that the Ips systems were presented.

from 1360 hp each. In the version with Volvo IPS, however, the engines have only 900 horsepower. Thanks to a greater efficiency offered by the horizontal thrust of the Pod you can have two less powerful and therefore more fuel efficient engines. At a speed of 35 knots, the C68 consumes 20% less fuel and increases the autonomy of 25%. Assuming 80 hours engine at 35 knots, you get a saving of 6,800 liters of fuel, or about € 12,000. The same can be said of Fiart 50 Genius, one of the first models that installed the Ips, despite being born and designed for shaft line transmission. At a maximum speed, the model with the Ips guarantees a savings of about 30% of fuel and this data can be met for almost all boats. With Volvo Ips in short, a third of fuel can be saved. 66 The Master of Apreamare measures nearly 21 feet long and weighs 40 tons. It mounts the most recent Ips 1200 and, also in this case, the comparison with traditional transmission is merciless: at 28.5 knots of speed 26% of diesel is saved and you get a longer fuel autonomy by as much as 35%. Assuming an average of 80 hours engine, we get a saving of around € 16,000. On the same boat, comparing the shelves of the layout, it is clear what the advantage is in terms of overall space. With Ips there is less space for the benefit of the full beam master cabin and an extra room for the sailor. Not only fuel but also decibels are saved. With Ips the drains are submerged and noise at sea is signifi-

cantly reduced than with a shaft line transmission. But that's not all. There are at least two other important advantages. The first one is appreciated by shipyards and indirectly also by ship owners very much. It refers to installation times. It is in all respects similar to a stern drive and therefore a scientist is not needed as for the shaft line. There are no rudders, the centerline to be aligned, the supports and the cases. In conclusion, fewer hours of work are necessary to assemble a transmission with the Pod. This is good not only for the yard that has to build a boat, but also for the owner who will benefit from a lower labor cost. The last arrow, which inevitably affects the target in the heart, is the maneuverability. There is an abyss between transmissions with driven pro-
pellers and a traditional shaft line. The Pod Volvo transmissions rotate independently from each other and this allows simple mooring maneuvers, but they are also able to ensure tight turns at high speed. Once you try it, it is hard to go back. It is better than the car steering. When you board a boat about 20 meters long which features a shaft line transmission you have the feeling that you could go to the kitchen to put on a coffee before the turn is over. On the dock you feel the same sensation. All those who came after Volvo, in fact, have adopted similar solutions.. Zeus feet as well as ZF Pod rotate and they do so independently from each other. In this way, as well as Volvo Penta transmissions, they are able to translate the boat. To lay alongside the dock in the English manner is no longer a problem. And even mooring with strong winds is not difficult. Everything is controlled with an easy and intuitive joystick, which allows to increase the engine power at a minimum, just to counter the leeway produced by the strong wind.
Z-Drive Pod,the conference Atena, the Italian association of naval technology, has dedicated a conference, that was held in Genoa, to present the benefits of these transmissions. The event was attended by engineers, designers and architects, who have worked with companies that produce Pod and the conference had an important scientific contribution. This is an independent study conducted by the University of Genoa. During the presentation, Professor Marco Ferrando has highlighted the benefits of these transmissions for the shipyards and vessels that adopt them. The research from the University of Genoa also used water tests.

Azipull 65c of Rolls-Royce Azimut engineers have designed a specific hull for the Azipull 65c propulsion pod carbon of 2,000 kW each, of Rolls-Royce with which the AzimutBenetti Group has signed an exclusive partnership. It is a transmission for azipod driving propellers, maneuverable with a joystick, which has the center of gravity shifted toward the stern to allow greater volumes on board. In addition, a specific propeller with 5-6 blades has been studied. The Azipull 65c Rolls-Royce is made of carbon, with "twisted" profile (for a more efficiency of flows) with integrated discharges with a fin that in the different regimes allows a better maintenance of the route.

It is a project developed by the German company Reintjes. Is an attempt to develop "upwards" the Pod concept: it is devoted to boats from 20 to 35 feet long. It is a foot characterized by a double helix, in order to exploit the advantages of the thrust front running and driving at the same time. Power is between 500 and 2,000 kW for each unit. Fortjes, in fact, has been designed for the dual installation. It is a not a study remained on paper, because it was already tested on two different boats: Inger II of 16 meters and a Maiora of 29 meters. The first with a pair of Man 450 kW, the second with a couple of MTU 1,432 kW. It took only four hours to install the Pod, a very surprising time, especially if we think of a 30 meters long boat. Other advantages were an increase in the maneuverability at low speeds, a high capacity to tack at cruising speed and a sensitive reduction of vibrations.
Above, the Maiora 29, built by Fipa of Viareggio, is the first Italian mega yacht to mount a pair of Fortjes transmissions combined with two MTU engines of 1,432 kW (1,498 hp) each.

ZF 4000:a project in collaboration with the shipyards It has been studied in agreement with the shipyards and all the aspects related to the transmission were evaluated. The weight, the space needed inside the room and endurance were taken into consideration. The integration between ZF and shipyard has led to a further reduction of spaces. The distance between engine and propeller, in fact, has been reduced to just four meters. A shaft line, instead, requires an almost double space. The other feature of this latest version of the ZF Pod is the reduced draft. The foot can be installed on a slightly concave hull. The hull form a sort of housing for the Pod resembling ducted propellers. The efficiency of the thrust is always maximum and, simultaneously, the immersion is more contained. The advantage is not only to have fewer problems on the shallow water, but also to have less friction in the water and to further increase the efficiency of thrust.

BARCHE March 2013
One of the most significant advantages of all Pod systems is the great maneuverability for any type of boat. Those from 20 to 24 meters in length but also smaller boats benefit much of it. Above Sarnico Spider, on the opposite page, the Azimut 62 S.
The joystick for the mooring is so popular that today there are not only Volvo, Zeus and ZF. This feature has been extended to stern drive both from Volvo and from MerCruiser with Axius system. In February, even Mercury has launched a joystick for outboard engines at the Miami Boat Show. Easy maneuver is an advantage for any type of boat. The beneficiaries are those from 20 to 24 meters in length, but also the smaller boats. The mid-range boats can do without the sailor, if the owner wishes it. The joystick, in fact, allows to maneuver even with a small crew or without the presence of particular experts on board. This also applies to small boats and vessels. An owner at first experience can more easily be seduced by an easy boat to moor. It only remains a topic that usually works against the Pod: they cost a lot of money. Companies have invested in research and development and they are not willing to give the fruits of their labor for free. And they do not even want to lower their prices or do sales. As counterpoints there are the lowest cost for the engine, because you do not need a lot of horses as for the shaft line, fewer hours of installation, and above all, the savings at the gas station. From 5 to 15,000 euro per year for boats up to 20 meters are a lot of money that allows to amortize the investment relatively quickly. The advantage is greater, particularly for those boats that really want to sail and not just make a good show of themselves in the dock.

wo world symbols – the nautical Dutch tradition and Italian design
– united for the creation of a majestic superyacht in iron and aluminum. A colossus of over 60 meters in length and 1,154 metric tons, the technical offices of Icon yachts, the studios of Jouke van de Baan and Redman Whiteley Dixon (for naval architecture and exterior styling, respectively) and Cristiano Gatto, responsible for the internal spaces, participated in its design and realization. Maidelle was created to suit the owner, who had participated in the project, and envisioned long oceanic crossings (it has an autonomy of 6,000 nautical miles). Mirror effects, glass walls and reflections all have a primary role in numerous and immense spaces of the boat, furnished with an original Art Déco style “correct” from oriental influences. These three different styles were chosen according to the area, in order to give each zone a different atmosphere. Cristian Gatto explains: «In the principal salon and in the area dedicated to the guests, we used dark wood and marble to render the atmosphere formal, but at the same time comfortabl». Beginning our description from the lower deck, there is a wide use of mahogany, rosewood, and dark walnut in the guest rooms. For the headboards and other elements, avory and leather were used, and all the cabins are provided with a dresser with a disappearing tv. Throughout various points on the ship, governable screens are positioned through iPod and iPhone applications that also regulate tv brightness.

A central corridor connects the guest zone up until the beach club. Climbing the stairs, one notices the mostly “formal” atmosphere that the interior designer spoke of: the lobby pavement is in Pororo – a type of precious black marble from La Spezia area, with white and gold streaks – whose research has lasted for a good two years. In order to amplify the particular effect of this precious roof material, different mirrors were inserted. At the stern of this deck, at the center of the salon, a table for 14 diners can be accommodated, constructed in rosewood with stainless steel legs. The central part, on the other hand, can be removed in order to form two smaller tables, and like all of the furniture on board the Maidelle besides two sofas, it was custom-made. The table is illuminated by a glass Murano chandelier by the Venini company. Close by, there is a clear glass, internally illuminated locker built by a craftsman in Venice. Gatto than created a terrace space, separated from the salon by a sliding door, and from the stern deck by a glass door. «The use of curved windows is very common in North European architecture – says Gatto – to illuminate the space and
to give one the impression of being outside, remaining at the same time protected from the cold». The meteorological conditions of the Dutch summer are similar to those of the Mediterranean fall or spring, hence the idea to create this not completely open space, halfway between the salon and the actual deck. Gatto’s second style choice, warmer and more informal, was used for the interior design of the owner areas. The owner’s suite includes two levels and can be accessed through a private corridor that begins at the lobby of the principal deck. Proceeding, one passes by the “master’s observation lounge”, a private little salon which guarantees a grand panoramic view and is equipped with some chairs, a disappearing screen, a bar and a desk. In front of this area there is also an exclusive space with auditorium seats and sun chairs. At the stern, the vip is located, whose layout is similar to that of the guest rooms, but is equipped with more expansive windows, made of the same wood used in the master bedroom. Further in the gaft, there is another salon, divided into two areas, one dedicated to film viewing and the other to conversation and relax.

Interview with captain Donald Heath Donald heath, captain of Maidelle, has always navigated boats of every size and type, and was involved in various ship projects, including above 82 meters. What is your overall impression of M/Y Maidelle? I’m very pleased with the build quality of the yacht – she behaved very well on delivery in some pretty awful weather, and generally gave the impression of being a solid and safe sea boat What are the top qualities of M/Y Maidelle? A lot of care was put into the technical spaces, and the standard of finish is very good. The various systems are from reputable suppliers and on delivery we had minimal problems. How does she handle in open and rough waters? Very well – the high bow keeps solid water off the deck, and we were able to maintain a good speed even in quite rough weather with minimal slamming. What about your team, are they happy to sail the yacht? Yes, everyone was impressed by her sea keeping qualities, and by and large she was very quiet even in rough weather. The separate crew mess and lounge work well, and often in the evening there will be some crew watching a film in the lounge, and maybe a game of cards or just general socialising in the mess room. What is Maidelle next stop? We will remain in the Mediterranean for the foreseeable future.

On the right there is an area with a few chairs, whereas there are two bathrooms (one for him and one for her). This space appears warmer and more intimate compared to other areas, such as the main salon, in part because of the choice of ebony and Canaletto walnut instead of mahogany and rosewood.

time to the collection clearly has the objective of emphasizing that the vessels that are a part of this series are able to “always navigate”. This is not a banal assertion, on the contrary, it is one proven by studies carried out by the creative staff of Azimut, which in 2009 brought this project to life in order to respond in the most satisfying way possible, to the demands of those who love the sea to the point of not wanting to deprive themselves of it, even in the presence of inopportune meteorological conditions, even at the cost of having to reduce the RPM and speed. The Magellano, project created by the Avigliana shipyard, envisages a range of

models extending from 43 to 80 feet, and four of these are already available. The last to make its debut, in chronological order, is the Magellano 76. The project of this “Italian trawler” has as a starting point the forefather of the series, or rather the Magellano 74, to which reinterpretations in the layout were introduced, in order to make it the most modern and up-to-date as possible. The layout brings back the typical characteristics of the rest of the range, in which the vertical line of the stern, the cleanness and the power of the lines and the harmony of the flybridge, which distinguishes itself with its fiberglass roof (hardtop), all stand out. The flybridge is not invasive, but actually an essential part from an esthetic perspective. At the very front of the vessel, the pilot station with three seats is located, complete with a Plexiglass windshield, and controls that allow the best possible management of the unit. At the

the Benetti di Viareggio brand. A subsequent restructuring of the shipyards of Fano, Viareggio and Avigliana brought the shipyard to obtain much more important productive results, in addition to the recent investments realized in Brazil for the creation of new stabilizations.
Despite having increased the length by only two feet, in comparison to the predecessor Magellano 74, the 76 offers a better and more balanced distribution of the on board space, in particular in the subdivision of the stowing areas from those dedicated to the ship owner and guests.
stern, on the other hand, most of the usable space near the stairs can be dedicated to a chaise lounge or beach chair. It is also possible to integrate a bimini for the cockpit. The main deck also gains in lengths compared to the 74 model, 50 cm in the deckhouse and 60 at t he stern for the bathroom foundation, the latter equipped with tender lift. The dynamic test was carried out in Viareggio, in the presence of quite favorable meteorological conditions, with a calm sea and total absence of wind. Before leaving the deck, we check the on board weight which in our case is equal to 4,000 litres of gasoline, 500 litres of sea water, 200 litres of black water and 8 people, me included, a weight considered average by the shipyard. The Magellano 76 is equipped with a stabilization system, and even navigating rough seas becomes doable without many problems, while the speed, on the other hand, varies according to ones own needs, and can pass from 11 knots obtainable with the powerful Man, from 1,000 horsepower, each one pulled to 1,400 rpm, at 22 knots which is the maximum reachable speed, with the hull in perfect shape, at 2,400 rpm. The estimated cruising speed, however, is about 15 knots and 1,800/1,900 rpm, a driving condition that allows the traversal of long distances, while consuming a total of about 200 litres an hour. The absence of vibrations and the well-contained noise (59 dBA 1,500 rpm and almost 67 at 2,200 in the pilot area, with delicate increases in the shipowner’s area closer to the engine room) render navigation comfortable even from an acoustic environmental prospective, and even in the cockpit the noise is still at more than acceptable levels. The carbon consumption (that we indicated at about 200 litres an hour at 1,800 rpm), double at full speed even when touching the peak of 415 litres

every hour, guaranteeing a good autonomy thanks to the important carbon previsions in the tank. If during linear navigation the Magellano 76 functions as a real vessel, regardless of the rpm speed adopted, during sailing it expresses a sober yet at the same time sporty attitude, not folding and closing a circle with a diameter of about 35/40 meters. All of this is obtainable even at sustained rpm speed such as that tested by us, or rather 2,000 rpm, which corresponds to 17 knots of speed. The motors are particularly reactive despite the vessel tonnage, and the full rpm speed from a still start is obtained after 25 seconds of acceleration. Both the longitudinal and transversal on board weight distribution are well thought out, which confers a well balanced asset, very useful in the case of rough seas or having to return to the port in limited conditions.
Comment about the hull We are dealing with a semi-displacement vessel that adopts a Dual-Mode hull, designed purposely to navigate any kind of sea. The hull has a singular form which does not elude the attentive eye, with long curvatures along the keel, with a socalled vertically cut wheel and skates with accentuated rough edges, able to provide a semi-displacement or semiplaning bearing, depending how the navigation is set up and how the motor power is utilized, which obviously depend on the maritime conditions and on ones own moving times. The materials utilized in the construction phase of the vessel are qualitatively flawless beginning at the hull, embellished with vinyl ester resins for the first layers which remain under the floating line, as these are materials mostly resistant to osmosis, to which stratifications of isophthalic resins are added, all rigorously positioned by hand. Besides these, there is the PVC high-quality, which integrates the structure of the walls and of the deck. The engine room and the areas most subject to possible collisions are stratified with sandwhich structure. The rest of the hull structures utilize composite materials.

he Nc9 designed by Garroni Study is characterized by a rigging made of versatile elements. The linear bench
of the cockpit is mounted on two rails for easy sliding. By moving it towards the bow you will have a wider stern platform. When you are at anchor and you want to have a swim, this is certainly an appreciated solution. If you want instead a more spacious cockpit, just slide the bench towards the stern. The walkable area is thus increased and you’ll have a more comfortable living area. The same concept is also used in the dinette. On the starboard side there are two little linear sofas with the table in the middle. The two sofas are obviously opposite eachother to make a dining area available. The bench seat further forward is however convertible, meaning that the back tilts and slides. The result is

a very useful bench facing the way in navigation. Two guests, in fact, can sit next to the captain. The key word is versatility. We are on board a boat of an overall length of 9.43 m. If such a rigging had not been devised, choices would have had to be made: bathing platform or wide cockpit? Bench seat for the co-pilot or seats for the dining room? In the dinette there is a galley located astern of the steering console, while the sleeping area provides two cabins and a bathroom. The master cabin is forward and the double berth is big enough. The same cannot be said for the second which has. a bed , of 194 x 105 cm. It is a room intended for children rather than for two adult guests. Excellent headroom space exceeding 190 cm, both in the forward cabin, bathroom and in the entrance to the guest cabin. At bow, there is a 140-cm sun deck., while the whole cockpit area is well protected from the sun. As regards the equipment
The dinette has two facing sofas with the table in the middle. The one at the front has a tilting and sliding back to create a sofa facing forward.

on deck, we like the choice of the pulpit. This is stopped and closed with a stay and also features a foldable ladder. So if you are moored at the bow going ashore is easy. We don’t like having a second anchor on the astern bathing platform. The fixed bow with the “iron” and the chain is certainly very practical and ready-to-use. If you must take a second stern anchor or if you want to moor at a bow dock in a marina without mooring rope, the pulpit is really useful. On the contrary, if you want to moor stern-, you will have to remember those 40 protruding centimetres. Finally, the rigging of a “family boat” must not neglect safety. NC 9 has the life raft, within reach in the cockpit. There are numerous handrails almost everywhere. The forward passage is well protected. From a family boat you expect a quiet cruise and this is the case. Jeanneau has decided to give only one option for the engine. It is a 260 hp Volvo D4.It is not very powerful. There are six of us on board. Rather than an average family, we are an extended family, not only in number but also for the testers “waistbands”. The transmission with sterndrive gives excellent manoeuvrability to the NC 9, both at sea and at low revs. Planing times are certainly not fast and, while accelerating, it is advisable to use flaps and trim. The visibility in the displacement phase is compromised because the boat is a bit trimmed by the stern. The maximum speed is only 24.6 knots but its single 260 hp engine offers the advantage of very low consumption: 33 litres/h are needed to plane and only 52 at the highest speed. On the other hand, have you ever seen a camper whiz at the speed of light?

strong for its slightly more than eight meters of total length, which in this case, precisely because of the external motorization, are livable up until there last centimeter. It is easy to handle even alone, but it is not towable, and is equipped with a cabin for a couple, with included but not separate services. The internal space is furnished with a wooden locker that can store an optional refrigerator, with lateral pouches which pass along the bed, with holders on the underside of the ceiling, which terminate with an opening of a collection of fishing rods, with spotlights, crawl space and the general electric control panel. The bed is obtained in the classic solution of a stackable dinette, or rather two single beds that can unite into a single queensized bed. Passing to the outside, at the prow, the Carolina 25 has a continuous iron pulpit, a locker for the anchor, a bow slide ring, two English style bollards, navigation lights and two clam cleats. The test The appointment is at the Santo Stefano Port (GR), on a sunny day with waves no higher than 50 centimeters. We are two people on the hull, and in addition to us, there is the Yamaha coupler, each at 225 horsepower, and the safety equipment. This combination may seem a bit excessive, seeing as though we will reach a top speed of 51 knots, and it would be more convenient to conserve the motors and consumption, combining a new generation 200 horsepower coupler. Tested in the US with this solution, the importer assures us that the speed, consumption and economic benefits justify the choice. But let’s get back to the test: the motorization of 450 total horsepower that we are using is definitely very satisfying for those who love pure adrenaline. The hull enters planning without nosing up in only 3 seconds and maintains that balance even at 15 knots with the motors at around 2,500 rpm. Slight pressure on the lever suffices to obtain an acceleration that brings speed, already at 3,000 RPM, beyond 25 knots, guaranteeing a good pace and consumptions equal to 40 litres an hour. At 4,500 rpm it navigates beyond 40 knots and the stability is notable: the correct counterbalance of onboard weight and of the structure allows the hull to always be layed out favorably, with the beam sea, in the garden and at the prow. In this type of situation, we have the opportunity to appreciate – even during full keel impact – the total absence of on board splashing. We obtain full speed bringing the trim to 70% of its course and at 6,000 rpm, and the motors at a speed of 51 knots. Consumptions obviously rise and go beyond 120 lt/h; at this pace, a certain level of driving experience is required. Driving at this speed for a long time is very tiring, but the attitude of the hull is always reassuring.

Technical comment about the hull
The vessel is manufactured by hand by a specialized staff. In addition, every hull is tested in ocean waters in order to assay the robustness of every meteorological condition. The materials are vinyl ester fiberglass for the first layers and than isophthalic to complete the stratification of the multi-axles. There is not much wood on board, planned only for few components on the inside of the cabin. The project was developed by Lou Codega, who gave priority both to the navigation quality of the hull and safety, and fishing. The hull proposes a deadrise of 24 degrees at the stern, with the slide planes deteriorating towards the prow, where they culminate in a profound V. The floors are furnished with hydro pedals, two on each side. The motorization, both in mono and bisolution, is applied at the Armstrong bracket, which improves navigation while at the same time not reducing cockpit space.

T
he 40 hp motors represent a major portion of the outboard market and, until last season, Honda had
not offered the same opportunities as its competing brands. We are not referring to technology, reliability, quality, fuel economy and performance which are essential values for all products of the Japanese brand, but to another feature: the maximum output power. We are sure that all 40 hp engines are actually able to provide them, but most of them come from thermal units capable of producing 60 or more hp. Finally, the gap has been filled and Honda 3-cylinder in-line 998 cc engine and 12 valves, capable of a maximum power of 60 hp, is now available also with a limited power version of 40 hp with the initials BF40 E. Is this enough to make it a great engine? No, there is much more, such as electronic management systems that allow high level performance. The unit is, indeed, equipped with the Blast technology which controls the stoichiometric ratio and the ignition timing for obtaining acceleration even when this small outboard is installed on boats more than 5 meters long. Power, as we know, is not everything. An engine must also have high torque values that can bring the boat in planing rapidly and push it to high cruising speed even at full load. The Blast technology does exactly this only when necessary, just to avoid wasting energy when not needed. Also the Ecomo function has the same purpose that allows a reduction of consumption by automatically adjusting the air /fuel mixture according to the speed and load on the engine. These are not only words. We have tested five different boats (three inflatable, a small fishing boat and an open motorboat) finding data that confirms the actual progress achieved through the electronic systems of motor control. Consumption is a strong point of all Honda engines, but the new 40 hp beats all records with more

than two miles to a gallon for vehicles weighing nearly a ton. The owner can verify this through the electronic equipment, using Honda dashboards or a display connected to the electronic control unit of the engine via the NMEA 2000 protocol. Besides being able to read the data of instantaneous consumption, a special green light named Eco indicates the operation of the Ecomo electronic system, generally active at all cruise speeds, on average between 2,500 and 5,000 rev/ min. In realizing this engine, the big Japanese company has also revised the size and shape of the nose cone which contains the gearbox inverter. Thanks to a better hydrodynamic, the performance at high speeds is excellent and some of the tested boats have even exceeded 30 knots. Honda wanted to make this engine easy to use even for beginners and for this reason it has developed a kit that allows one to extend the rudder angle from 60 ° to 100 ° for a better maneuverability, as happens with those cars that, having a very tight turning radius, are easier to park. The accessory is completed with the rudder angle indicator to be set on the bridge. Fishermen will appreciate another function: the electronic adjustment of the minimum speed to choose exactly the ideal pace for trawler fishing. With selected gear, by means of a button, it is possible to adjust the idle speed from 700 to 1000 rev / min with 50 laps. In practice, this outboard has a function that produces the same effect as the trolling valve for inboard boats. An important contribution to safety is provided by the device to adjust the angle of tilt. By using the trim button inserted in the control lever, the outboard is raised up only to a certain point and to exceed the maximum level set it is necessary to act on a switch located on the engine. This obviously reduces the possibility of making trim errors accidentally while sailing.

The test We have tested the BF40 E Honda on five different boats to verify the behavior in many different situations: three rubber boats with different hulls, equipment and weights, a fishing boat with considerable displacement and an open motorboat equipped for family day cruises. On all boats the engine was configured to deliver the maximum power.
Flyer 560 Sportage It is the best equipped dinghy (therefore the heaviest) among those tested. It is one of the most stylistically advanced models (designed by Christian Grande) and offers an excellent living area. It has a double row of seats convertible into sundecks and it is built with a molded counter that finishes the inside of locker in a glossy way. Under the conditions of the test the weight touched the ton, and nonetheless it reached a maximum speed of 29 knots which shows how the BF40 engine has a high torque even at maximum speed. BF 40E - Ecomo function (little green point) (4) The Ecomo and Blast technologies are capable of changing the performance of the engine to achieve more endurance or lower consumption according to the situations. It also features technologies that allow better navigation, while respecting the environment.
MV 18’ Technology The Motonautica Vesuviana boat is built largely by resin infusion vacuum, i.e. with a technologically advanced system rarely used for models of this size. The shipyard devotes much attention to the design of hulls with maximum efficiency and the combination with the BF40 E provides outstanding results. With a test displacement of approximately 860 kg, the dinghy touches 29.5 knots and at cruising speeds, between 15 and 20 knots, it runs over 2 miles with a liter.

Marshall M2 It is a dinghy of 5.6 meters and 430 kg still in the prototype stage. It is the heir of the Marshall dynasty and reminds us of the seaworthiness and ease of use that made the brand famous throughout Europe. The Honda engine applied to this boat provides excellent performance. With a displacement in sailing trim of 860 kg (at full load) it exceeds 31 knots and travels 2.23 miles with a gallon at about 18 knots. The Ecomo works up to 4,500 rpm (21.5 knots) and consumption is therefore very low even at this speed: 2.12 miles to a gallon.

The results are incredibly positive: speed of 25 knots and Ecomo function active from 2,500 to 5,000 rpm for a variable consumption depending on the speed from 1.95 to 1.22 nm / lt. In evaluating the data, in addition to the size and weight of the hull, the presence of a high deckhouse, that inevitably influences the aerodynamics, must be taken into consideration.

R
io Yachts’ history is a passionate family saga, born on the idyllic shores of Lake Iseo . Now with
branches worldwide, the still family-owned company has chosen to remain firmly rooted in its tradition of following customer demand step by step, rather than being tempted to increase production, cut costs and boost international sales relentlessly, at any price. Rio’s story is reflected in that of the family’s second generation scion, Piergiorgio Scarani, born in Brescia in 1968, now at the company’s helm. Piergiorgio cut his teeth in the family business, working in the shipyard fresh out of high school. But it was after getting his degree in Business Administration from the prestigious Bocconi University in Milan that he began officially to work for the company, gaining experience in every department, even though he has always favored the design department. How have you been dealing with this long period of crisis, which seems to have become a chronic feature of the current economic situation? Over the last few years the world has undergone a total transformation, both on the general economic scene and in the nautical sector in particular, especially as far as the USA and Europe are concerned. It will surely be a while till the situation gets straightened out. Our company has long history. We have been in the business for fifty years, and during this last decade, we have gradually risen to become one of the top manufacturers in our field, thanks to our emphasis on quality products and good customer relations. This policy has really paid off, as evidenced by the fact that we have weathered the crisis far
better than other Italian companies who perhaps gambled on greater sales volumes and vaster distribution systems. While we are invoicing less than in the past, we are, in any case, satisfied. You have also been investing… Yes, we’ve never lost faith in the market so we have taken a long-term approach, made possible also because we are part of a solid network of companies. This has allowed us to invest in the production of new models and to continue to provide assistance to boat owners. Is being 50 an asset? Absolutely, experience is our strong point. Today’s yacht purchaser is more careful and prefers to rely on more established shipyards. In this sense, the market has already been culled.

Haven’t you ever considered moving your production abroad? There are surely a number of new markets beginning to emerge in the nautical sector. Some of them, Brazil for example, have the potential of developing to reach our own levels, while others, like China, will surely require more time to mature. If we in the west possess the know-how while it is elsewhere that markets are expanding, we will have to figure out a way to work together. Our choice has been to bet on those markets, Brazil chief among them, not so much as a target for exportation, as territories to be explored as potential secondary domestic markets. Although the primary phase coincides with a exporting our products to these countries, to start getting our name known on their markets, our long-term goals go beyond exportation. Do you believe that Brazil can actually become a mature and consistent market, despite the ramifications of the current crisis, such as the protectionist stance of the local government and their fluctuating regulations? Developing countries are tumultuous, which limits their structural capacities and therefore require great patience. Since we are a family-run company and thus cannot be present everywhere, we have chosen to focus on just a few parts of the world, becoming very visibly and actively present there. It is a long, hard process.

How important do you think Italian-made quality really is? Very important, and for two distinct reasons. First of all because our expertise and craftsmanship is world famous. Secondly because our shipyards have a competitive edge in terms of prestige. So what do we need to do to defend the “made-in-Italy” label? I believe that first of all we need to integrate Italian entrepreneurship with that of other countries. There are thousands of ways to accomplish this, from Italian designers offering their services to foreign companies (as we have often seen successfully implemented in the automobile industry), to Italian companies who open foreign plants and those who merge with foreign firms. There isn’t a single rule of thumb: we need to understand whether we are globalized and “globalizable”. It is the yacht owners themselves who have been providing feedback for new models and improvements… At the moment, production logic has been turned around. The company has a number of projects in the works, but whereas in the past we would present our designs to the public, nowadays we contact our faithful clients, introduce them to the projects already underway, and take suggestions from them, perhaps adapting our design to their suggested modifications, or altering our project priorities.

We are a part of history In the wake of the economic boom and the "Italian miracle" of the early 60s, Luigi Scarani and Anna Maria Ziliani decided to start a boat and glider manufacturing company called Avionautica Rio on Lake Iseo. A few years later Luigi’s brother, Carlo joined the company. Thus begins the story of Rio Yachts, a boat yard known for its long-range vision, as evinced in particular at the end of the “dolce vita” era. In that period, when production was beginning to decline, Rio set off to launch an “everyman’s boat.” In addition to traditional models, Rio of hulls the period came in a range of innovative materials, shapes and sizes. ABS thermoplastic plates were used, which led to collaboration with ANIC, part of the ENI Group, using their product, Ravikral. This allowed Rio to offer boats requiring very little maintenance, easy to construct because they are mold-produced. Furthermore, the polyurethane foam injected between the inner and outer shells made the craft virtually unsinkable. Obviously, these smaller boats bore a more reasonable price tag. Emblematic of this period is the Rio 310 (3.10 overall length and using an outboard motor of up to 4HP). Fifteen of these vessels were produced between 1971 and 1974. This line distinguished the1970s which ushered in a period of continuous growth for Rio. Opening building facilities and branch offices in Spain and France, Rio’s boom culminated with the production of a line of “work boats” in the 1980s that supplied more than 200 motorboats to the Italian Carabinieri Police Force. The range was still in expansion when Luigi Scarani passed the baton to his son Piergiorgio in the year 2000. The elder s Scarani passed away in 2011 at the age of 77.

Have you considered producing small-to-medium sized flydeck models designed for family trips? This is a point that has been hotly debated at the boatyard. We need to decide whether to shift our production to respond to market demands or remain true to our reputation in terms of image, performance and innovation. Ours has always been a niche market, calling for a limited production line, and this has always been a conscious choice on our part. We’ll see… From a manufacturing point of view, what kind of production processes do you favor? Our resins are made of vinylester, especially for the “little boat” that is only kept in the water a few months a year. For the next size up, we use infusion techniques, although not for the entire hull, whose frame is made up of an assemblage of traditionally laminated and infusion-generated components. Is there room for a technological revolution in this sense? I have visited a number of «I believe our boat yards, and I think that in those that have increased their output by industrializing their dealing with the production processes and comes cutting costs end up with from maintaining a boats that are very basic and “poor.” Conversely, for those that aim for quality, technology can be useful, but certainly not in terms of lowering costs. Nowadays they are produc,a ing planing hulls designed relationship which for lower speeds and continues even post- greater savings. What do you think of that? sale». There is a kind of performance boat that needs to be a certain size - the typical 10,000 HP “speedboat” that can be as much as 20 meters long. A boat like this designed for speed and excitement can certainly benefit from being made lighter and more efficient. But there are other types of craft that are designed to be a bit slower, allowing a different approach to life at sea which provide a different sort of autonomy. We are focusing on completing the range of the former, so at the moment can only look on while these new types appear on the market. I think that this segment could spur on the market, as far as medium/large craft (starting from 20 meters) are concerned. How far do you think your range will go? We are oriented between 10 and 20 meter range and plan to remain there, although we have received requests to produce smaller vessels. Many other boat yards have shifted the focus of their production to making 8-9 meter boats but need to figure out whether they can guarantee the quality of such small craft. I can’t rule out Rio producing boats like this, too, in the future.

«D
o you love the sea, captain?»
«Yes! I love it! The sea is everything. It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and sound. It is the immense desert where man is never alone, seeing as though he feels his life tremble beside himself. The sea is nothing but a vehicle of supernatural and phenomenal existence; it is nothing but love, it is the infinite living being». This is how captain Nemo responded to Professor Arronaux during one of their adventures. A thought that we like to tie to Giovanna Locatelli, and artist from our perspective, an alchemist from her. Giovanna loves the immensity, the mysterious profoundness, and the eternal movement of the sea. She loves the idea of an infinite space that separates, and at the same time unites through unknown underground lines. Her creations nurture from the relationship with the people for whom she works. An immediate relationship in which she reaches a very intense level: «It is like love, in the clean sense of the word, and loving is what the owner, for whom I must furnish the yacht, is doing. Therefore, I love his boat, even though it is not the one of my dreams or that which I prefer». Giovanna Locatelli has a very strong motivation when she must work for a boat owner: «When I go to the sea, I am in the best conditions to create: being bare foot and feeling the

Giovanna Locatelli realized more than 4,000 different articles in her professional career. Passion and love for all things beautiful are the framework of every one of her works, such as the interior design that she is preparing to realize, with full respect to the history and personality of the Serena SMY, a magnificent 27 meter Motor Sailer built in 1983 by Benetti Sail Division.

hot and cold. By myself, I create, I think and reach a precise idea that I then transmit to my owner». Her creative story begins in 1984, almost for fun, during a threeweek vacation in a sailboat: she did not know the sea, but just like happens to many of us, it changed her life. «In the middle of the sea – and when I say “in the middle of the sea” I really mean “in the middle” – I reexamine everything, and from there the best inspirations arrive». Like the silver peak with which she realizes unique products, all different from each other, in her fashion house in Lecco. It is not possible to mass-produce them, as each work has its own story, which is often woven in with that of the owner. The equilibrium is certainly a dominant trait in her work, her products have a common element that makes them remain in harmony, in any place they are inserted. Research of alternative ideas is constant, yet always remains in the essence of the utilized product. Giovanna Locatteli defines her creations as expressions that must provoke emotion. «Yes, they must provoke emotion, I am certain. I had my biggest success with clients who, stopping by my stand, told me that they were not interested in what they were seeing, but in the strong emotion generated by the ensemble of everything». Transforming energy into an object also requires studying materials and technology, besides continuous experimentation. In almost 30 years of activity, she realized more than 4,000 products. The things that she produces certainly provide an avenue through which to transfer emotion, communicate and put oneself in relation with the rest of the world. She has a special relationship with foreigners, she loves Americans and there incredible expressions, because they are very enthusiastic. «They give you incredibly strength: there is an American client, the classic business man, who when he arrived by me, dropped his suitcase and called me “piccolo Leonardo”. This is something that only an American can say. A French person can say to you “très superbe”, but it just isn’t the same thing. Saying “piccolo Leonardo” means recognizing the greatness of our cultural patrimony, and I remember this with joy because it made me laugh… but being defined in this way was truly an amazing thing for me».
«I believe in simple things, and that the real innovation is returning to the past and recapturing it. For this reason, I didn’t invent anything and I don’t have any desire to do so, but I like taking something that already exists and proposing it in a different way».

Roche Bobois Outstanding among Roche Bobois’s many fine products for their 2013 outdoor collection is the Ava chair designed by Song Wen Zhong, produced by a gas-molded injection technique. With its transparent polycarbonate finish, it comes in five colors: sky, crystal, amber, graphite e ruby. Three shades (iceberg, charcoal and camel) of polished, opaque polyamide finishes are also available. The seat is 8o centimeters high, 59 long and 57 deep. www.roche-bobois.com
Fermob In creating Ultra Sofa, Sofia Frédéric sought to turn traditional outdoor sofa design on its head. Movable, ergonomic and comfortable, her sofa is revolutionary in its use of materials, with weather-resistant upholstery and solid-block foam filling, and its reclining back designed to allow a full range of positions. Both the yellow steel frame and the green upholstery materials of the 300-centimeter long, 93-cm high sofa have been treated to offer the utmost protection from the elements: the cloth has been thoroughly waterproofed while the paint is made of anti-UV powder. As the designer puts it, “When I thought up the Ultra Sofa my plan was to create a couch that was light and perfect for socializing and innovative in design, both in terms of aesthetics and ergonomics. The multi-positional reclining back adapts the sofa to the whole range of leisure activities, reading, relaxing or socializing.” www.fermob.com
Antolini Antolini, the stone-working company with a reputation for keeping abreast of the latest technological advances, has commissioned Alessandro La Spada to re-model its Lifestyle Showroom in Verona. Antolini’s clientele of architects and interior designers are greeted in an atmosphere designed to best highlight its Natura Collection line by leading visitors through a serious of exhibition spaces reminiscent of the various rooms in a house. La Spada, in collaboration with Antolini’s own in-house designers of projects and products, has given these rooms the feel of a 1970s-80s American setting, where boundaries between public and private spaces are blurred, but which in any case always remain characterized by comfort. The Antolini family has been in the business since 1920 when they opened their first little workshop in Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella (Italy). www.antolini.com

Labeland.it Two businessmen, trained in graphic design, from Vicenza, in northern Italy, have come up with the idea for the first Italian web portal for creating custom-designed labels for bottles of wine, spirits or other products. You can choose from over 350 designs, divided according to product type, which can then be personalized or even acquired exclusively. The site also allows restaurants, companies or individuals to create their own labels, even for commemorative bottles for special events. Designs can be further customized even beyond the proposals indicated on the website. www.labeland.it
Tiffany & Co. The famous jewelry company is honoring the Chinese Year of the Snake with a choker designed by Elsa Peretti, known for her original designs, whose lines are at once sensual and organic. Peretti, who has been working with Tiffany since 1974, has managed to capture the elegant sinuosity of the serpent through the use of an interlocking series of yellow-gold rings, hand-worked by expert goldsmiths. Gracefully slinky, the necklace follows the curves of the wearer. Cost: € 9400. www.tiffany.it

Luxury cars Audi RS 7 Sportback Audi has expanded its RS line to include the new RS 7 Sportback. A big, five-door coupé with a 560 HP, 4.0 TFSI engine, which made its debut at the Detroit Car Show, the Sportback accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. Maximum speeds on the standard model are only about 250 km/h, but with the

added options of the Dynamic or Dynamic plus package, top speeds can reach up to 280 or 305 km/h. The cylinder on demand (Cod) system provides the latest in efficiency technology, while active motor mounts reduce the slight vibrations generated by the four cylinder, opposing oscillation. The eight-speed tiptronic is standard, as are the 20'' alloy wheels with a seven twin-spoke design, while three sets of 21'' wheels are available. The Audi RS 7 Sportback chassis contains up to 20 percent aluminum and includes many parts made of high-strength and ultra high-strength steel alloys. A series of specific design details give it a decidedly sporty look, including its distinctive bumpers and glossy black, honeycombstructured, protective grille at the front, or matt aluminum trim. At the back, beneath its electrically retractable spoiler the design is replete with a distinctive diffuser and two large, oval tailpipes. www.audi.it

Ocean Independence Diamonds are forever is the name of a sixty-meter, six-bridged yacht built by Benetti in 2012. A glass-walled elevator takes you from one bridge to the next. Below-deck are two master suites with a 180° view of the sea and four guest quarters, all elaborately and elegantly decorated, as is the rest of the boat, with fine artwork, paintings, and crystal. The vessel also boasts a poop deck above the sun deck, where you can relax and enjoy the scenery in total privacy. She will remain docked a while longer in the Bahamas, where she has been sailing all winter long, and then head to the Mediterranean for the summer.
Intercharter Mim is a superyacht, almost fifty-meters in length, that, with a master cabin, two double staterooms, a twin and a triple (with one queen-sized bed and one twin) and an above-deck single room ideal for accommodating a babysitter, sleeps up to twelve people. In the master suite, the beamwidth, wood and glass sliding doors lead to a marble bathroom with a central hot tub. The neutral colors of her elegant, minimalist interiors, totally remodeled in 2008 by Andrew Winch, create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The roominess of the upper saloon is enhanced by the massive windows looking out to sea. In addition to the boat’s Quantum stabili-

Salt Cay, nestled in the Grand Turk Lagoon in the Caribbean, takes its name from the salterns that made up almost the entire island, now a UNESCO world-heritage site. With only about nine square kilometers at their disposal, the island’s very few inhabitants – about sixty – make their homes in a pair of villages, primarily Balfour Town. The Cay’s loveliest beaches are along the northern coast and extend without interruption for four full kilometers. But it is by boat that the beauty of the island can be best appreciated: the waters surrounding Grand Turk e Salt Cay are characterized by their incredibly crystalline transparency. Whole coral landscapes populated by a multitude of colored fishes, as well as dolphins and rays are still visible up to thirtyfive meters below the surface. Fishing for barracudas and all kinds of tuna is nothing short of miraculous. The plankton-rich waters of Salt Cay make them the best spot in the Caribbean for whale-watching when the great cetaceans migrate through the region between January and March.
